- 0:11Hello friends it is shown here. It is a Wednesday.
- 0:15It is the 19th of July. And I'm so glad that you have
- 0:19pressed play, clicked play, rolled over, and your fully
- 0:22automated system has started playing this for you.
- 0:25If that's very If you actually have done that, I would love to
- 0:28know how you did that, because I'd like to do that too.
- 0:31But you probably clicked play, and I'm so glad you did, because
- 0:35we are continuing in our journey in God's word day by day, to
- 0:41read a chapter and to see what God has to say to us.
- 0:45And at the moment, as you know, we are reading through the book
- 0:48of Isaiah and we are about to enter into a very rooted in time
- 0:55and place section of the book where Isaiah is going to be
- 0:59speaking to King Ahaz and King Ahaz is the King of Judah at a
- 1:05time when the Assyrian Empire is tap, tap tapping on their door.
- 1:11And God does not want him going into cahoots with this evil
- 1:16empire from the north that is doing all sorts of awful things
- 1:19as they come through the Middle East, dominating everything
- 1:24before them. God wants his king of Judah to
- 1:27trust in him and not trust in alliances with empires like
- 1:33this. And so you're going to hear lots
- 1:36of judgment on the king for going into this kind of
- 1:40alliance. But you're also going to hear
- 1:42hints of this hope that even though King Ahaz is going to do
- 1:46the wrong thing, God is not going to give up on his people,
- 1:49and he will still find a way to fulfill his promise to them.
- 1:52But I'm not going to give away anymore, Although I may have
- 1:55given away a bunch. But that's Okay.
- 1:58This can't be a spoiler when this was written that many
- 2:00thousands of years ago, right? Okay, Let's do it.
- 2:03Let us read together, friends. Isaiah, Chapter 7.
- 2:17When Ahaz, son of Jotham and grandson of Oziah, was king of
- 2:21Judah, king Resin of Syria, and Pika, son of Remilaya, the king
- 2:27of Israel, sent out to attack Jerusalem, however, they were
- 2:32unable to carry out their plan. The news had come to the Royal
- 2:36Court of Judah. Syria is allied with Israel
- 2:39against us, so the hearts of the king and his people trembled
- 2:43with fear. Like trees shaking in a storm.
- 2:47Then the Lord said to Isaiah, take your son share Jashob, and
- 2:52go out to meet King Ahaz. You will find him at the end of
- 2:56the aqueduct that feeds the water into the upper pool near
- 3:00the road leading to the field where cloth is washed.
- 3:03Tell him to stop worrying. Tell him he doesn't need to fear
- 3:07the fierce anger of those two burned out embers.
- 3:11King resin of Syria and Pika. Son of Remalaya.
- 3:16Yes, the kings of Syria and Israel are plotting against him,
- 3:19saying we will attack Judah and capture it for ourselves.
- 3:24Then we will install the son of Tabiel as Judah's king.
- 3:29But this is what the sovereign Lord says.
- 3:32This invasion will never happen. It will never take place.
- 3:36For Syria is no stronger than its capital Damascus, and
- 3:41Damascus is no stronger than its king resin.
- 3:44As for Israel, within 65 years it will be crushed and
- 3:48completely destroyed. Israel is no stronger than its
- 3:52capital, Samaria, and Samaria is no stronger than its king Pica,
- 3:58son of Remelaya. Unless your faith is firm, I
- 4:02cannot make you stand firm. Later, the Lord sent this
- 4:08message to King Ahaz. Ask the Lord your God for a sign
- 4:13of confirmation. A has make it as difficult as
- 4:16you want, as high as heaven or as deep as the place of the
- 4:20dead. But the king refused.
- 4:22No, he said. I will not test the Lord like
- 4:25that. Then Isaiah said, Listen well,
- 4:29you royal family of David. Isn't it enough to exhaust human
- 4:33patients? Must you exhaust the patience of
- 4:35my God as well? All right, then.
- 4:38The Lord himself will give you a sign.
- 4:40Look, the virgin will conceive a child.
- 4:44She will give birth to a son, and will call him Emmanuel,
- 4:48which means God is with us. By the time the child is old
- 4:53enough to choose what is right and reject what is wrong, he
- 4:56will be eating yogurt and honey. For before the child is that
- 5:01old, the lands of the two kings you fear so much will both be
- 5:05deserted. Then the Lord will bring things
- 5:08on you, your nation and your family unlike anything since
- 5:13Israel broke away from Judah. He will bring the king of
- 5:16Assyria upon you. In that day the Lord will
- 5:20whistle for the army of southern Egypt and for the army of
- 5:23Assyria. They will swarm around you like
- 5:26flies and bees. They will come in vast hordes
- 5:29and settle in the fertile areas and also in the desolate
- 5:33valleys, caves, and thorny places.
- 5:36In that day, the Lord will hire a razor from beyond the
- 5:40Euphrates River, the King of Assyria, and use it to shave off
- 5:45everything your land, your crops and your people.
- 5:49In that day, a farmer will be fortunate to have a cow and two
- 5:53sheep or goats left. Nevertheless, there will be
- 5:57enough milk for everyone. Because so few people will be
- 6:00left in the land, they will eat their fill of yogurt and honey.
- 6:06And in that day, the lush vineyards now worth 1000 pieces
- 6:10of silver will become patches of briars and thorns.
- 6:14The entire land will become a vast expanse of briars and
- 6:17thorns, a hunting ground overrun by wildlife.
- 6:21No one will go to the fertile hillsides where the gardens once
- 6:25grew, for briars and thorns will cover them cattle, sheep, and
- 6:30goats, or graze there. You are an almighty God.
- 6:46And before you stretch us out, time and eternity and you see
- 6:51everything and sometimes, Gee, it's hard to trust your Lord,
- 6:55Sometimes it's it's hard to to do what our conscience tells us
- 6:59is the right thing, because it just seems like it's going to
- 7:02shoot us in the foot and it's going to make our life so much
- 7:05harder. Give us faith.
- 7:11Shape our hearts that we would not be stubborn, sticking to our
- 7:15own guns, but that we would gently be molded to you, and
- 7:20that we would have the will and the confidence to follow you
- 7:25wherever you would lead us. Thank you that you actually do
- 7:30lead us, that your spirit convicts us, and that you draw
- 7:34us alongside you and your Kingdom.
- 7:39To go about your incredibly wonderful work, use us, mold us,
- 7:46send us just like you sent Isaiah, and we pray all this in
- 7:51Jesus name. Amen.
