- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's a Monday.
- 0:15It is the 13th of October. Great to have your company.
- 0:18Thank you for starting your week with me as we are going to
- 0:23unwrap our Bibles, open them up back to this wonderful letter to
- 0:27the Romans where Paul is writing to this group of believers
- 0:32trying to help them get their heads around what does it mean
- 0:35to be Christian while Jewish culturally and not forsake all
- 0:40the things that you used to think were so important about
- 0:43your faith, like the law. For a Jewish person, the law was
- 0:46like this great kindness that God had handed to them, this
- 0:51revelation of what God wanted to tell them.
- 0:54And so they studded it down to the NTH degree, that minute
- 0:57detail, so that they would not miss a thing.
- 1:01And here Paul comes and he says, you don't need to to follow the
- 1:05law for salvation, but it's a gift that Jesus gives you.
- 1:07And so this is so hard for the Jewish people to get their heads
- 1:11around as they embark on this Christian faith.
- 1:14And so just as in the last chapter, chapter 6, Paul was
- 1:18writing about that, he continues The very first word of this
- 1:22chapter is now, which is kind of following on from what we heard
- 1:26last week. So let us continue as Paul
- 1:30unwraps what it means to live under the gift of grace from
- 1:35Jesus, but still with this guidance that God gives us
- 1:39through the law. Let's dive in together, friends,
- 1:41as we read together Romans Chapter 7.
- 1:54Now, to your brothers and sisters, you who are familiar
- 1:57with the law, don't you know that the law applies only while
- 2:01a person is living? For example, when a woman
- 2:04marries, the law binds her to a husband as long as he is alive.
- 2:09But if he dies, the laws of marriage no longer apply to her.
- 2:14So while her husband is alive, she would be committing adultery
- 2:17if she married another man. But if her husband dies, she's
- 2:21free from that law and does not commit adultery when she
- 2:24remarries. So, my dear brothers and
- 2:27sisters, this is the point. You died to the power of the law
- 2:32when you died with Christ, and now you are united with the one
- 2:36who was raised from the dead. As a result, we can produce a
- 2:41harvest of good deeds for God. When we were controlled by our
- 2:45old nature, sinful desires were at work within us, and the law
- 2:49aroused these evil desires that produced the harvest of sinful
- 2:54deeds resulting in death. But now we've been released from
- 2:58the Law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its
- 3:02power. Now we can serve God, not in the
- 3:06old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of
- 3:10living in the Spirit. Well then, am I suggesting that
- 3:15the law of God is sinful? Of course not.
- 3:18In fact, it was the Law that showed me my sin.
- 3:22I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the Law had
- 3:25not said you must not covet. But sin used this command to
- 3:30arouse all kinds of covetous desires within me.
- 3:34If there were no law, sin would not have that power.
- 3:39At one time I lived without understanding the law, but then
- 3:43I learned the command not to covet.
- 3:45For instance, the power of sin came to life and I died.
- 3:51So I discovered that the law's commands, which were supposed to
- 3:54bring life, brought spiritual death instead.
- 3:58Sin took advantage of those commands and deceived me.
- 4:02It used the commands to kill me. But still the law itself is
- 4:07holy, and its commands are holy and right and good.
- 4:13But how can that be? Did the law which is good 'cause
- 4:17my death, of course not. Sin used what was good to bring
- 4:22about my condemnation to death. So we can see how terrible sin
- 4:27really is. It uses God's good commands for
- 4:31its own evil purposes. So the trouble is not with the
- 4:37law, for it is spiritual and good.
- 4:40The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin.
- 4:46I don't really understand myself, for I want to do what is
- 4:49right, but I don't do it. Instead, I do what I hate.
- 4:54But if I know that what I'm doing is wrong, this shows that
- 4:58I agree that the law is good, so I'm not the one doing wrong.
- 5:01It is sin living in me that does it, and I know that nothing good
- 5:07lives in me that is in my sinful nature.
- 5:11I want to do what is right, but I can't.
- 5:15I want to do what is good, but I don't.
- 5:18I don't want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.
- 5:22But if I do what I don't want to do, I'm not really the one doing
- 5:27wrong. It is sin living in me that does
- 5:30it. I've discovered this principle
- 5:33of life that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do
- 5:38what is wrong. I love God's law with all my
- 5:42heart, but there is another power within me that is at war
- 5:47with my mind. This power makes me a slave to
- 5:51the sin that is still within me. Oh what a miserable person I am
- 5:58who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and
- 6:01death. Thank God the answer is in Jesus
- 6:06Christ our Lord. So you see how it is in my mind.
- 6:11I really want to obey God's law, but because of my sinful nature,
- 6:17I am a slave to sin. Oh, Jesus, thank you.
- 6:30Thank you for coming and saving us from this, oh, this
- 6:34complexity that lives within us, our slavitude to sin.
- 6:40And just as Paul writes in here, who will free me from this life
- 6:44dominated by sin? And that's you, Jesus, who
- 6:48unlocks that victory over sin and death and shares that with
- 6:52us and frees us from this bondage to this crippling sin
- 6:59and presents us perfect in the light of you and your perfect
- 7:04way, Jesus. Oh, we are so grateful that your
- 7:09victory over sin and death is ours.
- 7:11And so we claim that victory. We stand in you, in our
- 7:16identity, in you in victory over sin, and we thank you that you
- 7:22present us perfect before the Father.
- 7:27Thank you for this love. Thank you for this
- 7:29transformation. Thank you for delivering us.
- 7:34We're so grateful, and we claim that today.
- 7:37And we live in the sure knowledge of your promise and
- 7:41your victory for us. And we pray all of this and your
- 7:45kind and wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
