- 0:07In Chicago, White Sox faced the Toronto Blue Jays at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto for
- 0:11opening day on Thursday, April 7th, 1977.
- 0:15Chicago was managed by first year manager Bob Lemon.
- 0:18Owner Bill Veek hired Lemon to succeed Paul Richards as the White Sox manager in the wake
- 0:22of finishing in last place in the AL West in 1976.
- 0:26Toronto was managed by Roy Hartzfeld and were playing the first game in franchise history
- 0:31after the league expanded to include the Blue Jays and Mariners for the 1977 season.
- 0:36This audio recording is from the Chicago Radio broadcast featuring announcers Lauren Brown,
- 0:40Jimmy Pearsall and Harry Carey.
- 0:44Well, Gar is greeted by a chorus of moves here in Toronto as he leaps it off.
- 0:48Gar in spring training.
- 0:50Wanda Pitting 290, two homers and six Army eyes.
- 0:56Here is the first pitch ever of the baseball game in the American League and Canada with the Paul Spikes.
- 1:02You know why at the first pitch Gar took off spring is because they want to put that in the Hall of Fame up here.
- 1:07In the first ball of the zone.
- 1:09The first ball.
- 1:11They were taken into the Canadian Department of Hall of Fame.
- 1:15The first ball will be taken to the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.
- 1:18Here's Bill Singer's second delivery.
- 1:20Look at him.
- 1:22He's got a piece of it actually.
- 1:25More up dial with these white home uniforms.
- 1:27You almost can't see the Toronto outfielders in the snow.
- 1:31Time's blown.
- 1:33Right hander goes into the lineup.
- 1:35Here's the two strike pitch.
- 1:36Outside of all.
- 1:38Defensively, Doug Lawson first.
- 1:40Pedro Garcia is in second.
- 1:41Peptor Porey is in short.
- 1:43And Dave McKay at third.
- 1:45All the trainer comes running out and gives a scraper to the pitcher.
- 1:51Bill Singer, apparently a little lab moisture got on the mound.
- 1:54He's got some mud in his cleats.
- 1:56And Roy Hartzoo just came on as sniffer.
- 1:58It was okay if they kept it out there.
- 2:00The scraper.
- 2:02In the outfield.
- 2:04John Scott in left.
- 2:05Gary Woods in center field.
- 2:08And in right field Steve Bowling.
- 2:10Here's the pitch.
- 2:11The plate goes back to the screen.
- 2:13The pitch is down up with two balls and two strikes.
- 2:16The snow has stopped.
- 2:21Here's the pitch.
- 2:22Off the catcher's mask.
- 2:25And the count goes full off his chest protector, I should say.
- 2:28And it goes full now.
- 2:29Three balls and two strikes.
- 2:30Now it will be followed by Alan Vanister and George Orta.
- 2:33I'll tell you, we got a middle of this lineup.
- 2:35Orta's this center in gambles.
- 2:37Then when he's not playing Lamontor Johnson.
- 2:40He puts some people on base.
- 2:42And he's got some fans in there right now.
- 2:44So, they got to be careful.
- 2:45You got to get your good stuff over.
- 2:47Jim Elsie in warming up 10 breath.
- 2:49Now Brian Downing trotting down towards the bullpen.
- 2:51After Dave McKay goes out to the mound to talk to the singer.
- 2:53The count is full.
- 2:55Right hander in the lineup.
- 2:56Here's the pitch.
- 2:57Up high and outside of all.
- 2:58Looks like he might have slipped, Jim.
- 3:00Can you imagine Garg and a three-some ball?
- 3:02Everybody wants him to walk.
- 3:03He's just telling it's a new year.
- 3:06Ralph Garg does not walk often.
- 3:09The matter is Alan Vanister hit 221 in the spring.
- 3:12No homers and six RBI's.
- 3:15White Sox has a team that's 272 down in the spring training.
- 3:18That's not bad.
- 3:19I'll settle for that for the year.
- 3:20We've been running a lot.
- 3:21I would have to see if there's a way the weather is today.
- 3:23We want to get her on as quick as possible.
- 3:25Even if you button right here.
- 3:27Vanister really looking down.
- 3:29He wasn't too sure that his run was on, I guess.
- 3:35Singer working out of a stretch gar with a lead off the first.
- 3:38A pitch inside of all.
- 3:40So after getting out in front of Ralph Garg,
- 3:42and two, Singer now has missed on five consecutive pitches.
- 3:51Here's the toss over to first and Garg, at that time,
- 3:53was just to step off the bag.
- 3:55A year ago, Singer beat the White Sox two times and lost once.
- 4:00Right-handed livers, here's the pitch,
- 4:01half-point and a foul.
- 4:02Into the feet, the first foul ball.
- 4:05That's what I'm excited about.
- 4:08A ball with a strike.
- 4:13Vanister would drag a run right now.
- 4:16The first base on the canes really back.
- 4:21One ball and one strike.
- 4:22Garg with a lead.
- 4:23Well, in the first, if you just joined us,
- 4:25right-handed livers, a fast ball.
- 4:27Two balls and a strike.
- 4:29At the White Sox, Singer has one-six and lost five against the White Sox.
- 4:35He was four and one at Texas last year,
- 4:38and then got traded.
- 4:41None other than Bert Leiland.
- 4:44Guys are a rocky medical encyclopedia.
- 4:48If anything can go wrong with you, it's gone wrong with him.
- 4:50Here's the toss over to first, runner-back in time.
- 4:54Outfield, playing Vanister straight away.
- 4:57Here's the pitch, high and inside with a fast ball.
- 4:59This is three and one.
- 5:00Now, Sorrell, in front of the plate, yells something out to Singer.
- 5:03Last time Singer worked with April 4th, I guess,
- 5:06and he only worked one inning.
- 5:07Didn't have much of a swing, so he's showing why he's a little wild.
- 5:12Three balls and a strike.
- 5:13Runner at first.
- 5:14Nobody out.
- 5:15We're on the first inning in Toronto.
- 5:20There goes the runner.
- 5:21Here's the pitch.
- 5:22Call strike at the inside.
- 5:23Four and a second.
- 5:24He is safe as the ball gets away from the second.
- 5:26Now Garry's trying to go to third.
- 5:28Here's the throw and he slides in safely.
- 5:31Garcia did not see the ball because of the snow.
- 5:34It hit the base and went out, and he completely lost it, Jimmy.
- 5:38He lost it, and then he couldn't pick it up and get his footing.
- 5:40He flipped all over the place.
- 5:41It wasn't that far.
- 5:42Uh-oh.
- 5:43And Garry is first.
- 5:44He's winning the third.
- 5:46He's hurt his chin or his ankle.
- 5:48Charlie Sad is down there with him.
- 5:50Bob Lemon comes out now.
- 5:52Last time I remember you being on the air with us.
- 5:54He hurt himself, sliding into second because he's hesitant on whether he should slide or shouldn't.
- 5:59And I know you talked to him about it this way.
- 6:01He slipped quite a ways.
- 6:02You can see his marks, but it's kind of dangerous out there right now.
- 6:05He just slipped right into the bag full fourth.
- 6:07He really had to get there in a hurry, and when he swid, he just got too close to the bag.
- 6:11I don't think he'll be alright.
- 6:14So it'll be a stolen base and an air on the catcher.
- 6:18We presume.
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:21We have to find the guy to go. Don't get on me this thing.
- 6:27Still a runner at third.
- 6:29And the board has the count three and one, but that was a called strike.
- 6:32It's a three-two count.
- 6:38Singer had a 6.6-0 earned run average.
- 6:41Here's a spring to the fly ball to right field.
- 6:43Coming over is the right field where he has it.
- 6:46Here's the throw into the infield and Garholt to third.
- 6:49Good throw by Steve Goldie in the right fielder.
- 6:52I'd say that would have been a close play at the plate.
- 6:54The ball was in front of the plate to the right side.
- 6:57But Bobby Cunnop held up well up there, and I think partially because of the fact that he just came up with that ankle injury.
- 7:03And there's nobody out, and all we have to do is hit a ground ball somewhere in the infield.
- 7:07Everybody's playing back to get this run in as well as that hit the ground.
- 7:10Or not.
- 7:13So there's one out in Georgia, or not.
- 7:17Steps in, or to back at his second base spot.
- 7:21Time is called momentarily by Ralph Garholt.
- 7:24Or to hit 338 with a Homer and TenRBI's in the spring.
- 7:33Infield playing in now with one out.
- 7:36Right a cut-off run off at the plate.
- 7:38Here's a pitcher that's going to put a fly ball to third field.
- 7:41Gary Woods is there. Garholt is packing up.
- 7:43He's got it. Here goes the runner headed for the plate.
- 7:46He's going to throw in, and it's not cut off, but Garholt is about five feet in front, and he goes rushing into Richie's zip.
- 7:52The zip was waiting to tell him whether to slide or not.
- 7:55And the White Sox has scored the first run in Canada in American League history.
- 8:00That's a good break for us to get off this front.
- 8:02Make this club come from behind if they're going to win this vlog.
- 8:04And we can score runs, and this now coming to the plate is really the guy that can hit one out of here.
- 8:09Richie's zip.
- 8:12A welcome addition to the White Sox.
- 8:15Richie hit 333 in the spring with a Homer and five RBIs.
- 8:22And a great producer for the Pirates over the years.
- 8:25Takes a look at the ball. Last year he tied the Pirates with a lead in home runs with 21, and he hits with 168.
- 8:32There was only one RBI away from being the RBI leader with 89 as he takes a look at ball two down low.
- 8:38And he also led the club in doubles with 35, and he led the Pirates in game winning RBI's the last three years.
- 8:45Steve Stone told me, Jimmy, he worried about two guys on the Pirates.
- 8:49Richie's zip and Al Oliver.
- 8:51No question this guy has great back control.
- 8:54Right-hander delivers the two old pitchers are swinging a long drive to center field going way back in woods.
- 8:59This ball might get out of here. It is scored! A home run!
- 9:03Richie just in his first American League time at back puts it straight over the fence in center field and it's a two to nothing ball game.
- 9:12How about that?
- 9:14Welcome to the American League.
- 9:16He's my kind of player. I'll tell you that right now. He's going to be asked for the ball, I think.
- 9:21Bill the Polish Prince gives the White Sox a two to nothing lead.
- 9:25You know, he hit that ball dead center and still go and went over to center field center. The fence beyond the inside fence.
- 9:33So it's a two to nothing ball game and Jim Spencer's the batter.
- 9:37It was hard to tell whether Wood would catch up with it or not. He dripped it back as if he had a play.
- 9:42But it's no problem getting over that 12 foot fence that extends from the left field corner around to the right field corner.
- 9:49As of now I'm glad we're playing. Spencer hit 300 of a spring, 4 homers and 9 RBIs.
- 9:55There's a swing and a bounce there. It's going to get through a base hit just to the right of second base.
- 10:00Spencer makes the turn at first and will go back.
- 10:03Bill the White Sox with their second hit of the inning.
- 10:07Have a runner at first and Oscar Gamble the batter.
- 10:10Spencer getting Jim right in the fish for that acid serve to the ball just skidded right off the width portion of it.
- 10:15He didn't hit that ball good at all.
- 10:20Oscar Gamble just over to the White Sox through the Bucky Denfield.
- 10:27A left handed hitter.
- 10:30Oscar had 17 home runs for the Yankees a year ago.
- 10:33Here's the pitch called strike off the outside corner.
- 10:39Sciner getting behind has gotten himself in trouble. He has to pitch like he just did to Gamble on the outside corner and down.
- 10:45Gamble has not played a lot this spring. He had some flu problems and here's a pitch low of all.
- 10:51Isn't it amazing every time a new player joins a club right away he's in the lineup.
- 10:56I hope he has a super day for it.
- 10:58Well they didn't know whether he was going to make it or not. He had given indications that he was going to go home and quit the game.
- 11:02But he's here today in uniform and play.
- 11:05With the first inning White Sox out in front. Two to nothing.
- 11:09A one one count on the batter. Whether it's first or two down. Right handed delivers. Here's the pitch up high of all. Two at one.
- 11:15Gamble his luggage was lost and he was worried about his gloves.
- 11:18They say you don't need your glove over here. Just bring your bag.
- 11:23Two balls in the strike Spencer with the lead off of first here is the pitch outside of all.
- 11:28White Sox and the Blue Jays will have good Friday off tomorrow.
- 11:32And with zoom action Saturday and Sunday.
- 11:37Three balls in the strike to the batter.
- 11:41Here's a toss over to first Spencer back inside. Chris Knapp will be going for the White Sox tomorrow.
- 11:48He wants to really look good in spring training especially his last outing. Here's a pitch outside of all he walked in.
- 11:55That's the second walk in the inning given up by Singer.
- 12:00He's going to have some activity down in the Toronto Blue Pet. Might be Pete Blokovic.
- 12:05Looks a little like Pete as he's trotting down there. As is warm up Jack-O-Dot we'll have to wait and see.
- 12:10Singer throwing much better than he did the first three hitters but as I said before he's trying to hit the corners and not pitching too much this spring.
- 12:17He's having a struggle. And they go longer with a better like him.
- 12:22Jerry with pitching gets maybe five runs in a second but he's still in the end every time.
- 12:26He always knew he'd come back. While we talked about the spring with more of this Spencer and un-gambles.
- 12:33Now we neglected the bench of this fellow. Eric Satterholm.
- 12:37Three oh eight hitter in the spring. Two homers and ten RBIs.
- 12:41Another welcome addition to the Chicago White Sox.
- 12:44The third baseman Eric Satterholm.
- 12:50At his best year in 1975 with 286, 11 homers and 58 RBIs.
- 12:56Takes the first pitch for a ball.
- 12:58At one time during that year he was on a hot streak hitting 349 and had seven homers and then unfortunately he was injured.
- 13:06I'll tell you about that in a second singer. Out of the stretch here's the pitch. Look at him.
- 13:13He accidentally fell into a hole in a construction site.
- 13:16Flatched your two ribs and without the rest of the year and had cartwheel damage in his left knee.
- 13:21So he did not play at all last year for Minnesota and thus in effect played out his option.
- 13:26Look at him open up fastball. And the count goes to a ball and two strikes.
- 13:31Jim Spencer down his second base. Oscar Gamble at first.
- 13:37Got a cold afternoon in Toronto, Canada. Right hander ready. Here's the pitch.
- 13:42Here's a swinger to shot down the left field line and there's a five ball.
- 13:49And it bounces up into the peak. The last three pitches of Satterholm's ball have been breaking balls and high.
- 13:55So singers have been lucky to get away with them and that ball that was fair would have been an extra couple of runs.
- 14:00So the count remains the same. One ball and two strikes.
- 14:10Jerry Johnson warming up in the bullpen. Here's the pitch.
- 14:13Here's a swing and a bounce into the shortstop parries. He's got it.
- 14:16Goes to second to Garcia for the fourth down on Gamble and that's it.
- 14:20Here in the first inning, the Chicago White Sox come up with two runs on two hits.
- 14:27There was one air and two men left down.
- 14:30At the end of a half inning of play, the White Sox two, the Blue Jays coming to back.
- 14:35I got it. I got it. It's it.
- 14:40I'm on all my favorite quintuplets. Five. We're going shopping, right girls?
- 14:43Right. Right. Right. Right. Right.
- 14:45That's horrible. When you've got a lot to buy, shop there.
- 14:48Now through Saturday, for instance, girls' ten-pack panties are just $3.99 and Mrs. Ten Packs are $3.99 and $4.99.
- 14:55Mine must be hard shopping for quintuplets these days.
- 14:58No, I just get five of everything.
- 15:00As for selection, there has assorted prints and solids for girls. Bikini, hip-huggers, or briefs for Mrs. All for great prices.
- 15:07But, dear, how do you buy clothes?
- 15:09We get a bank loan.
- 15:10So come to there.
- 15:11Now through Saturday, girls' ten-pack panties are just $3.99.
- 15:14Mrs. Ten Packs are $3.99 and $4.99. You can charge everything and you'll save no matter how many packs you need.
- 15:20We've got to go, mom.
- 15:21Okay. Bye, dear.
- 15:23Bye.
- 15:24Give my love to the twins.
- 15:26You can feel better than better
- 15:40Moin Browne, back in Toronto with Jimmy Perisall as we go to the bottom of the first inning,
- 15:45and Brett, getting ready to get into his warm-up sauce,
- 15:47as they're putting some dirt around the mouth and the whole plate area.
- 15:50And as they do a little more ten seconds for station identification.
- 15:54This is WMAQ Chicago.
- 15:58WMAQ Chicago...
- 16:07So getting the warm up socle with Brian Downing, let's take a look at this Chicago White Sox b-fen.
- 16:13Jim's Texas at Hurryface, George Ordos at Second,ום
- 16:17return with shortstop and Eric Sotter home at third.
- 16:21Brian Downing doing the catching.
- 16:23While on the outfield, Ralph Garin left field,
- 16:26Seth Lomond is better.
- 16:28And Richie Ziskin right.
- 16:29On the mound, Ken Brett, he won 10 and lost 12 last year
- 16:33with an earned run average of 3.32.
- 16:36Brett to spring.
- 16:381-1 and lost 3 with an earned run average of 5.67.
- 16:42He had a great outing about a week ago against the Pirates.
- 16:45And then so-so in his last outing.
- 16:49I don't think he can motivate himself.
- 16:52He's the type of guy that's got any pitching in the regular season.
- 16:55He just can't seem to reach back and fire higher.
- 16:58I talked to him before the game and asked him how he thought about opening up.
- 17:02He was thrilled to death.
- 17:03He's a loosey-goosey guy.
- 17:05And he'll give you a quick answer if you give him a bad hit question.
- 17:09All those wordos are.
- 17:10All those wordos are.
- 17:12And I gotta believe he'll put your free ball game.
- 17:14Well Brett won shutouts in three of his first four ball games that he pitched for the White Sox last year.
- 17:21His 10 victories was high on the Fox staff.
- 17:23He also lost 16 in complete games in 26.
- 17:27Johnny had the best earned run average among the White Sox starters with 3.28.
- 17:32Johnny Scott leased it off to left fielder.
- 17:34He played at Hawaii last year where he had 3.15.
- 17:3715 homers and 82 RBI.
- 17:41He's the only guy in his four club that can steal bases so he's gotta be very careful when he's on base.
- 17:46He's a right-handed hitter.
- 17:47Jackie Moore in the coaches box with 30s with the Texas Rangers last year and Harry Warner coaching it first.
- 17:53Left-hander delivers and it's a pass ball for a strike.
- 17:56Bob Miller who was a first-round draft choice by the New York Mets in the expansion a few years back
- 18:03to put pitching coach on this club.
- 18:04Here's the one strike delivery.
- 18:06Goes after a breaking pitch and piles it off and is in the hole 0-2.
- 18:11Roy Hartfield, a Blue J manager looking to go with youth on his club, also speed.
- 18:19He's a gambling type of manager and he figures with good pitching and speed and this artificial surface he's gonna win some ball games.
- 18:26Exhibition stadium is the proper name for this ball.
- 18:30Park here's a fast ball low just left in the outside corner.
- 18:37One ball and two strikes.
- 18:39Outfield playing the batter around the ball up.
- 18:42Left-hander ready.
- 18:43Here's the 1-2 pitch inside a ball.
- 18:47While the announcer is for Toronto, young man by the name of Tom Cheek and the color announcer,
- 18:52one of Chicago's all-time favorite athletes, early win.
- 18:57What do you want to say in the game with your sister Chicago?
- 19:01I'm not sure that it was with the White Sox.
- 19:03I think he was 43.
- 19:05Yeah, it took him a long time to get that 300.
- 19:07Two balls and two strikes as Brett goes into the lineup of delivers a squib and a miss.
- 19:11He struck him out.
- 19:13So Ken Brett strikes out the first man that he faces and there's one out of the first inning.
- 19:17Bob Lemon was telling me he told Wynn, why don't you quit?
- 19:21Not too many guys that 299 with.
- 19:25That really threw a good breaking ball.
- 19:27One of the better breaking balls we've seen in the last three.
- 19:29Good shot and good play.
- 19:32That's the stories.
- 19:36Stories, when he came over here for Lowenstein, didn't he?
- 19:39Yeah, from Cleveland.
- 19:41Well, he put San Diego into Cleveland for Lowenstein.
- 19:43He gets 195 at San Diego last year.
- 19:46Looks at the first pitch for a ball.
- 19:48Four homers, 15 RBIs and a called strike in the outside corner.
- 19:52No has stopped. Hopefully for good.
- 19:56This winter in Toronto, here's the one-one pitch.
- 19:58Here's a swing of the foul going back into the seat.
- 20:02We have a break. The wind isn't blowing at all.
- 20:05It's been very still now.
- 20:07It's blowing up because we aren't feeling it.
- 20:09It's very difficult to tell here about the wind.
- 20:11Oh, now I see a small flag to our right.
- 20:15But the national banners for these two countries are out in center field.
- 20:19Here's a swing of the miss. He struck him out.
- 20:2110 breath.
- 20:23And struck out the first two men that he has faced.
- 20:25And the batter is Doug Holt.
- 20:27And Jimmy will tell you about him in a moment.
- 20:29That Sacramento last year, he hit 3-13, 25 homers and 83 RBIs.
- 20:34Went up to the Texas Rangers, hit 300,
- 20:36and I was totally impressed with the young man, Jimmy.
- 20:38He's a self-made young man.
- 20:40By that, he didn't have too much ability.
- 20:42He weighed about 30 pounds more and he doesn't know he's a native ball.
- 20:44And just worked so hard with desire.
- 20:46Doesn't run too well, but here he is in the big leagues
- 20:48because he can hit the ball.
- 20:50He's touched to him and it's way outside of all.
- 20:52One of the problems he had is the fact that Mike Hardrow,
- 20:55a rookie of the year, of a couple of years ago, was at first base.
- 20:58A little better defensively at first, you think, than Hardrow?
- 21:01I would say so, yes. A lot better.
- 21:04Left-handed ready. Here's the one-oh-pitch breaking ball for a strike.
- 21:08Good curve ball.
- 21:12And he's even up one-on-one.
- 21:14I'm wondering if the fans, the pressure gets to these fellow that haven't been in the big leagues at all.
- 21:17With this excitement and all this, we'll make a swing at bad pitches.
- 21:21Left-handed ready. Here's the one-on-pitch.
- 21:23Here's a swing at a long drive. This side's going to be out of here.
- 21:26A warm line into the left-side of the CAC.
- 21:29And a standing ovation for Doug Elk.
- 21:32And it's a two-to-one ball game. Listen to this crowd.
- 21:50So Doug Elk has hit the first Toronto Major League home run in Canada.
- 21:55After a ritchie's disc, it hit the first in this country in an American League uniform in the first inning.
- 22:00So it's a two-to-one ball game.
- 22:02So Doug Elk on a one-on-pitch.
- 22:04Looks like he might have hung a curve, Jimmy.
- 22:06That's who it was.
- 22:11And the first pitch to Otto Vallez.
- 22:13Formerly of the Yankees, it was a called strike.
- 22:15Vallez hit 266, two homers, 10 RBIs for the Yankees a year ago.
- 22:20Here's a fastball. This is outside of all.
- 22:23What a big swing he has.
- 22:25He just holds that bat back up over his head.
- 22:27No matter where the pitch is, he just lets it go.
- 22:30Left-hander of the lineup. Here's the one-on-pitch inside of all.
- 22:34Well, you know, we were talking before the game,
- 22:36he said the ball really wasn't carrying and batting practice,
- 22:38but with that wind subsiding, no snow.
- 22:41It has gotten out of here.
- 22:42And right now, the wind going from home plate to center field.
- 22:45There's a swing at a long fly ball right center field.
- 22:48Lemon is back near the warning track, and he's got it right on the warning track.
- 22:52That ball came within five feet of getting out of here in right center field.
- 22:56And that's what fires the side of the first inning.
- 22:58Four Toronto, one run on one hit.
- 23:00Doug Alps first home run of the year, and nobody left out.
- 23:04With the end of one inning of play, the Chicago White Sox 2, Toronto won.
- 23:09Here's something you ought to know.

- 24:00Fill her up with champions.
- 24:06Fill her up with champions.
- 24:09Lane Brown back in Toronto, and they just introduced the Commissioner baseball Bowie Cohn
- 24:15and the Toronto South Booters.
- 24:18You think he was in the States?
- 24:20And the President of the American League, Lee McFail, will get the big hand.
- 24:26While the American League wanted to come into Toronto,
- 24:30whereas the National League did not.
- 24:32And you may recall, Bowie Cohn says, no one's going anywhere until a team gets to Washington.
- 24:37But Lee McFail and the other American League owners said,
- 24:40no, we're going to Toronto, whether you like it or not.
- 24:43They had to get another team with Seattle to avoid that lawsuit.
- 24:46So here they are.
- 24:48Chet Lemon will lead it off here on the second inning for the White Sox.
- 24:55White Sox out in front two to one, the first pitch by singers of fastball.
- 25:02White Sox with two runs on two hits for Blue Jays, one run on one hit.
- 25:06We've already had two home runs.
- 25:08Here's a swinger to ground her to Garcy at second.
- 25:10She's got it. Goes over to first in time and Lemon's required.
- 25:15Well, there's one out and Brian Downey in the batter.
- 25:18He failed to tell you that during the spring, Lemon hit 281 with a homer and seven RBIs.
- 25:24Brian Downey had a pretty good spring at the plate.
- 25:27Brian hit 346 with a homer and eight RBIs.
- 25:36Last night, the American League season opened up at Seattle. Here's the first pitch of fastball high of all one.
- 25:42Blank, Tana.
- 25:45Shutout Seattle on nine hits, seven to nothing.
- 25:48Right hander goes into the lineup. Here's the one-oh-pitch.
- 25:51They reported the crowd at 57, 732.
- 25:5557,732.
- 25:58I know in the Washington paper this morning when I was coming in from after doing the Bulls Bullets game last night from Washington,
- 26:05and the Tigers are swinging their foul. They reported, and apparently they did here too on a wire service story,
- 26:10that that was the biggest home opener in the history of the American League.
- 26:14But Jack Rohammer mentioned to me that Cleveland against the Tigers had around 73,000 just a few years ago
- 26:20and wanted me to pass that on and set the record straight.
- 26:23He said he knew it because he played in the ballgame.
- 26:26A ball and two strikes to Downey. Nobody on one out.
- 26:29Outfield, playing him around the hair to the left.
- 26:32Right hander ready. Here's the pitch, up high of all, even to the count two and two.
- 26:37Outstanding crowd on hand considering the weather conditions.
- 26:42They sold 44,000 tickets, and I think they're all here.
- 26:47Right hander ready. The two-to-pitch. Here's a swing and a pop-up to the left side, carrying on into the feet.
- 26:54And we still wait for the first man to catch it on the fly.
- 27:00Nobody wants to grab that ball. It is cold.
- 27:05And there's going to be hockey here tonight.
- 27:07They run out to see the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second game of their first round series for the Stanley Cup.
- 27:14Here's the two-to-pitch. Here's a swing and a foul.
- 27:18Straight back, and the count remains the same.
- 27:21This is the first round of playoff for the Stanley Cup.
- 27:24Dan Hozak, our engineer, also handles the controls for Jimmy West.
- 27:29And Lou Anne Gotti on the Black Hawk games here on M.A.Q.
- 27:32Here's a half swing and a looper behind the mound. Shortstop charges, throws, not in time.
- 27:36A half swing by Gotti that just got over the head of the pitcher.
- 27:40The shortstop Tories came in, through, but too late.
- 27:43And Gotti is on with an infield hit.
- 27:47But Dan Hozak handles the engineering on the Chicago Black Hawk broadcast.
- 27:52Jimmy West, Lou Anne Gotti.
- 27:54Jimmy or Dan, when they came through Toronto last time, there was no way the White Sox and Toronto were going to play baseball here today.
- 28:00That was about a month and a half ago, they predicted that.
- 28:03So the Ontarians and the Black Hawks were wrong.
- 28:08There is baseball here in Toronto.
- 28:11The batter-welfth guard tossed over to first and downing dives back in.
- 28:15Gar walked his first time up and came around to score the first White Sox run of the ball game.
- 28:20He stole second, went to third on an air, and came home on orders fly ball.
- 28:23Here's the pitch outside of all.
- 28:26Just close to the corner.
- 28:28Mr. Shilak calling balls and strikes.
- 28:32Joe Brinkman down at first, Rich Garcia at second, and Steve Palermo working third.
- 28:37Here's the toss to first and the runner-back.
- 28:42On our ticker, instead of baseball scores, we're getting stock market reports.
- 28:46So we can't tell you what's going on elsewhere in baseball today.
- 28:49The Cubs are opening up at home against the Metz, Sieber against Burris,
- 28:53St. Louis is at Pittsburgh this afternoon, and San Francisco's at Los Angeles.
- 28:57Three games in the National League.
- 29:01Right-hander ready, runner-off the bag at first.
- 29:04Here's the 1-0 pitch, outside of all 2-0.
- 29:08In the American League, Kansas City is at Detroit, Siddorff going against Roberts,
- 29:12Texas is at Baltimore, Blyland-Levin going against Palmer.
- 29:16And you realize in that game at Baltimore, it will mark the first time in 21 years
- 29:21that Brooks Robinson is not starting at third base.
- 29:25It's amazing that you've been around 21 years.
- 29:29Doesn't seem that long.
- 29:30Here's the next pitch and a false strike is God's.
- 29:33The second to the 2-0 pitch.
- 29:35Milwaukee's at New York, Travers against Hunter, Cleveland's at Boston,
- 29:39Eckersley against Jenkins, and tonight, California at Seattle again, Ryan going against Romo.
- 29:45The 2-1 delivery way outside of all 3-1.
- 29:48Alan Bannister in the on-deck circle, and the Snow Plurys have resumed.
- 29:59Three balls and a strike.
- 30:03Singer crosses over to first downing back in time.
- 30:112-1, the White Sox are out in front if you just joined us.
- 30:14As you've been with us all the way, they're still out in front, 2-1.
- 30:19Right-hander tosses a get-over to first and downing dives back again.
- 30:23All the White Sox will be home on Tuesday.
- 30:29A special festivities dedicated to the memory of the late Mayor Richard Daly.
- 30:34A false strike for Gar right across the letters.
- 30:36Gar was ready to go down to first base, and the count is full 3-2.
- 30:41Game time opening day, 1-15 against the Red Sox.
- 30:45Freakin' festivities starting at 12.45, and the first 10,000 fans will receive a replica baseball made out of styrofoam.
- 30:54Here's a toss over to first and downing just got back in time.
- 30:57Anticipating that Brian would be off with a 3-2 pitch, Singer went over there again for about the fifth time.
- 31:04Right-hander ready.
- 31:08Never tossed a firstie back again.
- 31:12So the first 10,000 along with the Daly family will have an opportunity to throw out the first pitch on opening day against the Boston Red Sox.
- 31:20Here's a swing and a grounded to the third base from McKay.
- 31:23Can't go to second.
- 31:24For the first in the fair, kicked away.
- 31:26Brian Downing will go to third, and the White Sox had runners at first and third.
- 31:31Downing was off to the pitch.
- 31:32McKay had no chance to get him at second. True role to Doug Alders first that got beyond him.
- 31:38Not far enough to allow guard to go, but enough to allow Brian Downing to scoot over to third.
- 31:45So that's the second error of all game against Toronto.
- 31:50Number seven, the shortstop, Allen Bannister.
- 31:54And the batter is Allen Bannister who's quite out to right field his first time up.
- 31:58So the White Sox with a chance to add another run here, a runner at third and less than two outs.
- 32:03Only one.
- 32:07Right-hander working out of the stretch of the first pitch to Bannister, the fastball outside.
- 32:12Allen Bannister a very happy young man.
- 32:15A number one draft choice twice in his career as a shortstop out of high school.
- 32:20He did not sign.
- 32:21Then he went to Arizona State and he was the number one draft choice, but he's really never had the opportunity to play every day as a big league show.
- 32:27And now that opportunity has been given to him.
- 32:31He has a little heat on his back due to the fact that Kevin Bell is working out of that position with the minor league club at Iowa.
- 32:38Right-hander ready. Here's the 1-0 pitchers.
- 32:40A swing and a shot of beat him in the left field.
- 32:42Allen Bannister drives home the third run as Downing crosses the plate and Ralph Gar holds up at second.
- 32:48So Bannister with his first RBI of the year.
- 32:53The air really set it up because if that not happened Downing would have had to hold at second.
- 32:59And I don't believe he would have been able to score on that base hit.
- 33:02And we're going to have activity in the Toronto bullpen again.
- 33:07So the White Sox back to their two run lead at the 3-1 ball game.
- 33:11And George Orta who's going to run his first time up is the batter with a sacrifice fly back in the first inning.
- 33:20In field a double play-dip. Right-hander delivers and it's a breaking pitch for a strike in the outside corner.
- 33:27So the Red Sox will be in Chicago Tuesday and Wednesday.
- 33:35Singer ends down at his knees with his hands on his knees getting the sign.
- 33:39Now he's ready. Here's the pitch. Fastball called. Fight 2.
- 33:44Orta steps out of the box.
- 33:46Richie Zisk who pumped a home run into the center field seats.
- 33:51His first time up is a member of the White Sox awaits in the on-deck circle.
- 33:59Right-hander ready. Here's the pitch. Here's a swing and a pop-up coming off towards the stands.
- 34:04It'll be on a play and into the seats.
- 34:07And the count remains the same. No balls and two strikes.
- 34:10While these Toronto Blue Jays will be in Chicago next weekend.
- 34:16It'll be the first time that a Canadian baseball team has played at Camiskey Park.
- 34:22And in commemoration and a salute to Canada over those three days.
- 34:28Many special events including a free trip to Toronto for lucky fans and colorful ceremonies on the field.
- 34:34Here's a point and a miss. Orta just struck out. That's the first strikeout by Singer.
- 34:42And now there are two down in Richie Zisk the batter.
- 34:47Another one he did with a light ball throw.
- 34:50When Toronto comes in on Friday night.
- 34:54Medallions. A Canadian Maple Leaf will be given away.
- 34:58A Maple Leaf 10 to the first 10,000 people through the turnstiles.
- 35:03Here's the pitch to Zisk. Here's a swing and a drive down the left side.
- 35:06It is a four ball. One man is around to score.
- 35:09Here comes another land to third and he's going to be held up.
- 35:12And Richie Zisk goes in with a run producing double.
- 35:15I'll tell you he doesn't waste any time.
- 35:17He went after that first pitch and doubled off the left field wall.
- 35:21And the White Sox are out in front four to one.
- 35:25Gaur came home to score and Bannister held up a third.
- 35:30So Zisk two for two and two RBIs.
- 35:37Number three, a first baseman, Jim Spencer.
- 35:40Jim Spencer who singled up the Medallions last time up as the batter.
- 35:43A base hit here could give the White Sox a couple more runs.
- 35:50Singer leans in and gets his sign.
- 35:52Jerry Johnson a right-hander continues to warm up in the Toronto bullpen.
- 35:56Right-hander delivers. Here's a pitch called strike.
- 36:00Singer was two and one against the White Sox a year ago.
- 36:06As I recall he was a lot tougher than that against this.
- 36:14Four to one the White Sox out in front.
- 36:17Right-hander is ready.
- 36:19Here's the pitch.
- 36:21Here's a ball of all. Evens the count up at one and one.
- 36:29Chris Knapp will be going for the White Sox out here Friday.
- 36:36Right-hander ready. Here's the pitch.
- 36:38Here's a swing and a foul.
- 36:40The Mini Monoso in the coaches box at Firstie-Bobbleton.
- 36:43Well a year ago the White Sox won their home opener.
- 36:46Four to nothing over Kansas City.
- 36:48The board was sensational. A six-hit shutout.
- 36:51And this man Jim Spencer was the offensive star at two-run homer.
- 36:54A pair of singles a walk, a sacrifice bump and three RBI's.
- 37:00Tell you about that opening day line up a year ago and compare it to today.
- 37:04Here's the one-two pitch a swing and a foul.
- 37:07Shep Lemon was in center field he used today.
- 37:10Ralph Gar was in left field he used today.
- 37:12George Orta was at third. He's at second today.
- 37:15John Jones was the designated hitter. He's gone.
- 37:18Buddy Bradford was in right field. Buddy's playing in Japan now.
- 37:21Jim Spencer was at first. He still is. Bucky Bennett short.
- 37:24And Bucky's with the Yankees. Jack Brohammer was at second.
- 37:27Here's the one-two pitch. Here's a swing and a one-hopper right back to the mound.
- 37:31Singer has it first at first and the Blue Jays are out of the inning here in the second.
- 37:35In the second the White Sox come up with two runs on three hits.
- 37:40One air and two men left down.
- 37:43The White Sox have stranded four in the first two innings.
- 37:46We go to the bottom of the second. The White Sox four. The Blue Jays one.
- 37:49This is WMAQ Chicago.
- 37:52Music playing.
- 38:20When we say we're having cash call winners all over Chicago and we mean it.
- 38:25WMAQ's here with me, Rick.
- 38:27Good morning. This is Lee Sherwood calling from WMAQ.
- 38:30And you've just won two brand new cars and $3,000 in cash.
- 38:34Congratulations. No kidding.
- 38:37Another cash call is coming soon.
- 38:40Another reason to answer every phone call. WMAQ is going to make me rich.
- 38:46Music playing.
- 38:50One down back in Toronto, Canada as we go to the bottom of the second.
- 38:53Ken Brett with a three-run lead here.
- 38:58Will face the number five, six and seven hitters for the Maple,
- 39:04I want to say the Maple's feet.
- 39:06The Blue Jays, Gary Wood, Steve Balling and Pete Garcia.
- 39:11We're talking about that opening lineup of a year ago, opposed to today.
- 39:14Mucky Denner as we mentioned was in short and Mucky's now with the Yankees.
- 39:18Jack Brohamer was in second.
- 39:20Jack is still with the ball club but not in the starting lineup.
- 39:23And Pete Varney did the catching.
- 39:25Pete now with the Atlanta Braves triple A farm club.
- 39:29Now most of the snow is going off the field.
- 39:32A little bit of a breeze that we've had.
- 39:35Has blown it off but yep, there's still some flurries here in Toronto.
- 39:40Alright, Gary Wood leads it off. He played at Tucson last year, the Oakland Athletics triple A club
- 39:45where he hit 308, eight homers and 67 RBIs.
- 39:48Springs and Fowleswood.
- 39:50Down the right side, one strike and the batter.
- 39:56Wood's a good looking prospect.
- 40:05Left hander ready, here's the one strike pitch outside of all.
- 40:12White Sox with two runs in the first and two in the second here in a very chilly afternoon in Toronto, Canada.
- 40:17Here's the one one pitch outside ball two.
- 40:20They've got two Woods on this team, Gary Woods and Al Woods.
- 40:24Gary, who's batting out, came up with Oakland played in six games last year, he gets 125.
- 40:30Here's the two one pitch punch to the right side.
- 40:32He's got a threat off the mound. Spencer has it, dies and misses him, a base hit.
- 40:37Spencer jumped in front of Brett, thought the ball and Dole trying to get Woods.
- 40:43And he just missed him and it's an infield hit.
- 40:50So a runner at first and nobody out and Steve Bowling the batter, played at Spokane last year
- 40:56and the Wadley Braves organization, at 266, 16 homers and 92 RBI's.
- 41:02A lot of these kids have very impressive statistics out of the Pacific Coast League,
- 41:06which is not considered a hitters league.
- 41:10That out of his stretch for the first time today, here's a sling and a foul.
- 41:15Oh that's got a sting as it went off of him here in this cold weather.
- 41:21With Spokane's most valuable player last year, out of Tulsa University, played in 14 games
- 41:28with a Milwaukee Brewers at 167.
- 41:31Outfield, plays the right handed hitter around the left, big gap in right center.
- 41:36We've had two home runs today, Richie's disc and dug off.
- 41:40And a breaking pitch for a strike, good curve ball.
- 41:44Bowling in the hole 0-2, Pedro Garcia in the on-deck circle.
- 41:53Ken Brett, ready? Here's the two strike delivery, a swing and a foul into the seats.
- 41:59Well I'll tell you, they don't have a screen around the ballpark, they have one directly behind home plate
- 42:04and those balls whittle into the seats here.
- 42:11Well our partner, Harry Carey, will be coming along in a moment.
- 42:14Here's the two strike pitch missed with a breaking ball, ball one.
- 42:18I'm sure is very pleased to be doing this game today.
- 42:21And thus holds the distinction of being the only announcer, whether it be American or Canadian,
- 42:27to announce two openers in Canada for Major League Baseball.
- 42:30Here's a pitch roll of all.
- 42:32Harry was announcing for the St. Louis Cardinals and they opened up the National League's entrance into Canada
- 42:38with the Montreal Expos a few years ago.
- 42:41And now is the White Sox announcer announcing the first American League game in Canada here today
- 42:46with the White Sox against the Blue Jays.
- 42:50Left-hander ready, here's the two-two pitch, swing and a foul.
- 42:54I guess Dick Dozer, the Tribune, is covering his third expansion opener.
- 42:58Covered the Cubs at Houston a few years ago.
- 43:01The White Sox against the Seattle Pilots and the White Sox here today.
- 43:06Here's a pitch covering for the Tribune, Joe got it with the Sun-Times,
- 43:09and Phil Hirsch, a newcomer to Chicago, covering for the Chicago Daily News.
- 43:13Two-two pitch up high of all.
- 43:16So the count goes full, three balls and two strikes.
- 43:19Nobody out or runner at first.
- 43:22This man gets on, it brings up the tying run here in the bottom of the second.
- 43:28We've got some heating elements up on our ceiling.
- 43:32Off his bat and back to the screen, the runner is off, and the count remains a three and two.
- 43:38But I'm not feeling any of that heat. I don't know about Dan Hosek, he's not either.
- 43:42A beautiful day for football.
- 43:48Three balls and two strikes.
- 43:53Still getting the stock market on the ticker.
- 43:56No other baseball to report out because of it.
- 44:00Brett Ruddy, runner takes his lead. Here's a toss over to first, the runner back in time.
- 44:04Spencer was playing behind the runner, and then came back, but Gary Woods was not to be fooled.
- 44:12Flouries begin again. There he goes, the three-two pitch.
- 44:16Look at him, close to second. He is safe.
- 44:20A good score by downing, but Woods got such a good jump that he swithed there safely
- 44:25to the first Toronto stolen base.
- 44:30That's the third strikeout by Brett.
- 44:35He began the ball game by striking out the first two batters, John Scott and Hector Torres,
- 44:40but then dug off one into the left center field seats, which made it a two-to-one ball game at that time.
- 44:46Right now it's four-to-one White Sox's Pedro Garcia, who played with Milwaukee and the Tigers last year, steps up.
- 44:53There's a sling, and they're driving the right field, just coming over, have to play it on a hop.
- 44:57Here comes the runner around third. Here's the throw, and he is safe.
- 45:04Go Garcia goes after the first pitch, it singles home.
- 45:09Gary Woods, and it's a four-to-two ball game.
- 45:15Garcia had only 29 RBI's last year with Milwaukee and Detroit.
- 45:20He picks up his first of the year here this afternoon.
- 45:27So one out of the runner at first, and Dave McKay, who played with the Minnesota Twins for a while last year,
- 45:32before getting sent down to Sacramento, the Pacific Coast League is the batter,
- 45:38hit 203 with eight RBI's at Minnesota.
- 45:42I believe that he is the first Canadian.
- 45:45Here's a swing and a grounder on the right side of base.
- 45:48Here goes the runner at second, holding up.
- 45:52And Toronto collects their third hit of the inning and their fourth of the ball game.
- 45:58McKay, a right-handed hitter, or there was fold around.
- 46:03Spencer, holding the runner at first,
- 46:05lost a big haul on the right side of the infield, and he singled through.
- 46:11But I think every Canadian who's ever played Major League Baseball has been a pitcher.
- 46:16And I think Dave McKay is the only one who hasn't been a pitcher.
- 46:20He's from Vancouver, second, holding up.
- 46:24And Toronto collects their third hit of the inning and their fourth of the ball game.
- 46:30McKay, a right-handed hitter, or there was fold around.
- 46:34Spencer, holding the runner at first, lost a big haul on the right side of the infield, and he singled through.
- 46:42But I think every Canadian who's ever played Major League Baseball has been a pitcher.
- 46:47And I think Dave McKay is the only one who hasn't been a pitcher.
- 46:51He's from Vancouver, Canada, and played at Creighton University in Omaha.
- 46:55Now Ken Brett has gone to the White Fox dugout and had anyone at a new glove.
- 47:03He got it. And he goes back to the mound.
- 47:07Now the Blue Jays have come up with three singles here on the second inning, and it's a four to two ball game.
- 47:18Rick Sarone.
- 47:22Rick Sarone out of the Cleveland organization.
- 47:24Rick Sarone has the batter.
- 47:27Sarone hit 254 with 11 homers and 49 RBI's at Toledo, the international league last year,
- 47:33and made the international league all-star team.
- 47:36Right-handed hitter.
- 47:38Ian Allen Ashby is also out of Cleveland, handling the catching chores in a good curve ball for a strike.
- 47:52Brett looks in, gets his sign from downing.
- 47:55The tying runs on base.
- 47:57Here's a swing and a shot, grabbed by Madison. Throw over to Spocken.
- 48:01Madison with a great play, diving to his right, got that on one quick hop, through to Hordes to get Dave Pache.
- 48:09Outstanding play by Allen Madison, his first chance this afternoon.
- 48:14Well, that's safe to base it on.
- 48:22The fans going to decision here.
- 48:25They weren't too happy with it. They thought that Pache had got neither in time.
- 48:34Which Garcia uppiring in second thought different?
- 48:38On the play, Pedro Garcia goes to third, so there are runners.
- 48:44And the Merzium Bird, and John Scott, who struck out his first time up as the batter.
- 48:53Let's try to get out of a jam here.
- 49:01Or the two ball game, the tying runs are on. Left-handed delivers.
- 49:04Here's a swing and a one hop, we're back to the mound. Brett goes to both knees, flips over to Jim Spencer, and that's what fires the start.
- 49:11So in the second, Toronto comes up with one run on three hits.
- 49:17There were no errors, and two men left on.
- 49:19At the end of two completing the play, the Chicago White Fox Four, Serato Ducez, do a little bit of a spin.
- 49:27Keeping our messages what we wrote about.
- 49:33Sharing our know-how, saying hello.
- 49:37Taking to visit a pleasure for you.
- 49:40With a two feet one, come to know.
- 49:44Turn your Easter dinner into a memorable event with fine foods from Jewel.
- 49:55Start with a favorite from a butcher shop.
- 49:58Through Saturday, delicious smoked ham shank portion, seven to nine pounds, is just 69 cents a pound.
- 50:03Ham rump portion, six to eight pounds, is just 79 cents a pound.
- 50:07And add freshness to your Easter menu with farmed stand Idaho potatoes.
- 50:11A ten pound bag is just 99 cents. Through Saturday at Jewel.
- 50:16People make Jewel no place where the heart comes.
- 50:23Long drive back to Toronto as we go to the first inning.
- 50:27The White Sharks out in front here by a score of four to two.
- 50:34Now, Oscar Gamble will lead it off.
- 50:36Let him step in and tell you about it.
- 50:37Here's to me, Pierce Hall.
- 50:39Baseball's back in town, they say here in Toronto.
- 50:42It's off the calls. The scale is coming down right now.
- 50:45And I don't know how these fairs can stand it.
- 50:47They don't want to have any beer.
- 50:49They're not supposed to drink.
- 50:50So to keep warm, there's about 38,000 people here.
- 50:53They're just talking to themselves.
- 50:55But Oscar Gamble stepped in. He walked his first time up.
- 50:58Gamble came over.
- 51:00We're not from the end. We were great for him.
- 51:03He was a resident here.
- 51:04He's got good power.
- 51:06He's a left hander here and he crouches at the plate.
- 51:09He's got good delivers.
- 51:10He's changed his speed outside ball one.
- 51:13The third base from the K is way over off the bag.
- 51:16The shortstop, Hector Torres is really deep
- 51:19and over towards the bag at second.
- 51:21The one ball delivery.
- 51:22It's a fastball outside ball two.
- 51:24Behind the plate, Mr. Shylock.
- 51:27White stops leading four to two.
- 51:29Tremendous home run by Visk Bilsicic
- 51:34and Gamble goes after it.
- 51:36He doesn't get it.
- 51:37Two balls and one strike. There's nobody out.
- 51:40He's starting to melt a little bit through the snow.
- 51:43So let's see him out as low as he goes at all.
- 51:46The two one deliveries going on.
- 51:48Follow off the left side.
- 51:50Third base from the K going after it.
- 51:52Now over comes the shortstop and the K's trying to get a good spin.
- 51:55Upputting. Young man.
- 51:57I think as fast as he could.
- 51:59He's sliding and slipping all over the place.
- 52:01Wondering whether any of these players might injure themselves.
- 52:04At second base, Garcia's got his hand in his pocket.
- 52:08Most of the players have got their hands somewhere in their body
- 52:11so they can keep their hands warm.
- 52:13All the first bases very deep.
- 52:15Coaching at third bases Bobby cannot.
- 52:17Two balls and two strikes.
- 52:19Hop on a third inning.
- 52:21White strikes leading.
- 52:22There's a pitch.
- 52:23Hats away now.
- 52:24He's hitting his line.
- 52:25Count goes full three and two.
- 52:27The thing about having a safety difficulty staying ahead of the hitters
- 52:31has shown probably about 65 or 70 pitches.
- 52:35Setting an awful lot of time cleaning his cleats.
- 52:38He's got a heavy instrument out there.
- 52:41He wipes them off and then cleans them out.
- 52:43Three balls and two strikes.
- 52:45On the next spot at home.
- 52:46The three two deliveries.
- 52:48Passball going on in Gamble without a clean.
- 52:51And he stands here who are really excited about baseball.
- 52:55A lot of strike they had a tremendous strike with to start things off
- 52:58with all the big three bases that are around.
- 53:01Only a few hundred people showed up at $35 a hit.
- 53:04So you see they're really going to support this ballpark.
- 53:07They've sold 8,900 seasons.
- 53:09The first pitch to start at home.
- 53:10Backball is striking the outside corner.
- 53:12Mr. Shylock trying to keep himself warm jumps around back there.
- 53:17Harky Anderson.
- 53:19Start his career as a manager in this ballpark.
- 53:22And so did Dick Williams.
- 53:24A lot of good major league baseball players play their career here.
- 53:27And the fastball's going on.
- 53:28He's in the hole between the start and the base hit.
- 53:31So side of home gets a high slider and lifts it.
- 53:33And the left field for a base hit.
- 53:35He's one for two.
- 53:37Brian and Bounty.
- 53:39We've got a...
- 53:43That's Chuck Lemmon.
- 53:45My mistake.
- 53:46Chuck Lemmon is still here.
- 53:47There's another view.
- 53:48Lemmon looking down from there now.
- 53:50Side of home.
- 53:52They know where that field is.
- 53:55He's now at a good lead now.
- 53:56And they know what a good move.
- 53:57At the belt.
- 53:58Delivered.
- 53:59Fastball on the outside corner called side.
- 54:02Well out.
- 54:04Starting to brighten up a little bit here.
- 54:06But it's raining and hailing.
- 54:11Infield and double play position.
- 54:13I see over by the bag of second and deep.
- 54:15With his asset serve they play very deep.
- 54:17Here, shakes off one side.
- 54:18Goes to the belt.
- 54:19Delivers a breaking ball.
- 54:20Strike two calls.
- 54:21And the fans here excited at every pitch.
- 54:24It's going to be a long season for them.
- 54:26They've got a ball club that's very green.
- 54:29Center fielders who are straight away in deep.
- 54:33There's a pitch inside.
- 54:34Ball on.
- 54:35One ball and two strikes.
- 54:37In left field.
- 54:39John Scott playing deep off the line.
- 54:43In right field.
- 54:46He's bowling.
- 54:47Okay, Center field most of the spring that they made the change.
- 54:49And he's playing right field.
- 54:50He's holding between first and second.
- 54:52As all holds against the runners.
- 54:54Side and over.
- 54:55At the belt now.
- 54:56There's a pitch going on.
- 54:57Hit over third.
- 54:58Hey, foul.
- 54:59Just foul.
- 55:00Just foul.
- 55:01As Ramon the Empire waved the single foul.
- 55:05So Lemon getting a slider away from Flicton.
- 55:07He's fetching over the bag with just foul.
- 55:11And now a singer holding his right hand.
- 55:14And then he's up.
- 55:15It's really cold.
- 55:16It's amazing that these pitchers can pitch at all.
- 55:18When they're sitting on the bench, they've got hot water bottles and heavy jacket sign.
- 55:23And towels around their neck.
- 55:25One ball and two strikes.
- 55:26One out.
- 55:27Top of the third inning.
- 55:28Whitebacks leading 4-2.
- 55:30Now a singer weighs again.
- 55:31Go over to signs again.
- 55:32He's out ready.
- 55:33Sterone's behind the plate.
- 55:34He's in the sign.
- 55:35There's a pitch going on.
- 55:36Bad ball.
- 55:37Now I'm having Jason and Giles strike.
- 55:39Bill Campbell.
- 55:40And Center Lemon.
- 55:41But I was swinging.
- 55:42And both left bad pitches.
- 55:44Now we're up into the relay.
- 55:48I catch a land downing.
- 55:52Downing got a flu kit when he tried to get away from a pitch.
- 55:55He went over to pitchers head for a little flu single in the infield.
- 55:59First pitch and a singer swung on him.
- 56:01Boy, I was a pitch up in his eye that he just fouled back.
- 56:04It's like blowing force left now.
- 56:08Offly-Colon is an out-pick.
- 56:14One strike on Brian Downing.
- 56:15He's doing a fine job behind the plate now.
- 56:18Singer looks over first.
- 56:19There's a pitch inside.
- 56:20One ball and one strike.
- 56:22Big hole between first and second.
- 56:27Downing got a 3-40-6 this spring.
- 56:29Had one homerun in eight RBI.
- 56:31They called him the real hard slinger.
- 56:33He really swung from downtown.
- 56:35Singer looked over first and delivered a high-breaking ball.
- 56:37Two balls and a strike.
- 56:39Got two outs.
- 56:41Whiteback with two in the first and two in the second.
- 56:45Blue Jane got their first turn on a homerun by Doug All at the first station.
- 56:49He did it over everything in left-center field.
- 56:523-30 down each line.
- 56:543-75 to left-center at 400.
- 56:56There's a pitch in the dirt.
- 56:58Then Sorrell makes a good play.
- 57:00This young man has got a good glow.
- 57:04Upfires, saying a few words out there.
- 57:07Singer, you've got to be very careful when you start stepping around that rubber.
- 57:12Then fix your shoes.
- 57:14Keep getting filled.
- 57:16Third base McCabe, deeper third.
- 57:18Singer, I thought, looked over first base.
- 57:20Here's a Chris Swarga high-ground ball between short and third for a base hit.
- 57:23So down he gets a high pitch and just reaches in the left field for a base hit.
- 57:26Second hit in the inning.
- 57:28Whiteback's have been on first and second now with two outs.
- 57:31They're only going to play Ralph Carr.
- 57:34Carr walked his first time up.
- 57:36Stole second and scored.
- 57:38He got out of the air.
- 57:40From the first base and threw the ball into the dirt.
- 57:43The catcher now outs talking to Singer.
- 57:46He's on his one knee right now.
- 57:48Really trying to clean this, please.
- 57:50Every time they get a base hit, he cleans them twice as much.
- 57:53I don't think he's throwing well at all as the blue fin now starts warming up.
- 57:57If the guys get a base hit right now, I would say that would be all for him.
- 58:01They've been up about three different times.
- 58:03Now the rain really coming hard towards the left field side.
- 58:07Some of these players will really have their trouble getting their footing as you can see the rain coming into the boots.
- 58:13There's no wind here now.
- 58:15They just hit to the good spot.
- 58:17That was the first pitch, one on the guy.
- 58:19He's out of third base, one in slow. Here's McCabe.
- 58:21He's up with it. He fires over first. He doesn't get it.
- 58:23A real close play at all. Not satisfied at all.
- 58:26And as McCabe didn't think that ball wouldn't hit it, decided to do it two hands with the seeded gar.
- 58:31He just seeded out. And the bases are now loaded.
- 58:34So Garwood is great to clean this puckling.
- 58:38The last step he really jumped at it.
- 58:43So that's pitch number seven for the White Sox.
- 58:46And the base to the lower with two outs.
- 58:48And the down and the two outs.
- 58:50We've got a lot of line in the White Sox.
- 58:52He's one for two.
- 58:54First time up.
- 58:56Now he's stepped out.
- 58:58Base to the loaded. I'm dead.
- 59:00George Orta.
- 59:02Got a home with third.
- 59:04Honest second.
- 59:06Ryan Downing. First pitch.
- 59:08First ball right down the middle.
- 59:10Paul Strike-1.
- 59:12Singer goes first wind up.
- 59:14Singer won a 116 game.
- 59:16He's lost a 119.
- 59:18Last year he was 99 with Minnesota.
- 59:20And four one with Texas.
- 59:22So kind of pitch.
- 59:24At his steps now.
- 59:26He delivers a fastball tour on the right side.
- 59:28Everybody off.
- 59:30And several outs will take it.
- 59:32So on number two on the right side.
- 59:34The base is loaded.
- 59:36And the store after is really happening to play.
- 59:38Is the White Sox for the Blue Gays 2.
- 59:40Braddock Brothers.
- 59:42Hey Campbell.
- 59:44This is something they all allow.
- 59:54But during this season they only get eight.
- 59:56Stop downing the players down to second base.
- 59:58And that's the try line.
- 1:00:00We'll brush the plate off.
- 1:00:02Cooking a third base.
- 1:00:04Gappy Moore for the Blue Gays.
- 1:00:06And a first base.
- 1:00:08Terry Warner.
- 1:00:10And I can see a lot of people coming out of the right field stand.
- 1:00:14Going on into the center field stand with their coverage.
- 1:00:16Paulie took out his first time up.
- 1:00:18He came over to Cleveland.
- 1:00:20When they came back.
- 1:00:22Down in the lower steams.
- 1:00:24They're looking for food.
- 1:00:26We've got a little experience.
- 1:00:28Not much of a hitter.
- 1:00:30But a real fine fielder.
- 1:00:32Brad takes his six.
- 1:00:34Oh he's got a down ball up the middle.
- 1:00:36And down to guys with Q and K.
- 1:00:38And a red ball.
- 1:00:40That's filled up the middle by Hector Torre.
- 1:00:44And Lauren Brunner brings in some coffee.
- 1:00:46Thank you Lauren.
- 1:00:48It is really cold.
- 1:00:50And that's the fifth base hit given up by Brett.
- 1:00:52Anastor making some fine play.
- 1:00:54And looking like he can handle that job out there.
- 1:00:56That third base has got her home.
- 1:00:58George got the Anastor second base order.
- 1:01:00He's more happy playing there than anywhere.
- 1:01:02Anastor's base in central.
- 1:01:04Gregor.
- 1:01:06Gregor.
- 1:01:08Big right handed hitter.
- 1:01:10Hit a homerun last time up.
- 1:01:12Last year he had 25 at Factor Middle.
- 1:01:14He was the property of the Texas Rangers.
- 1:01:16He didn't hold between first and second.
- 1:01:18His center holds her in the run.
- 1:01:20Torre with a good lead.
- 1:01:22With a fast ball high.
- 1:01:24And the base hitter has been getting up.
- 1:01:26Three of them were giving up on breaking balls.
- 1:01:28A high breaking ball.
- 1:01:30Gregor got it on deep at third.
- 1:01:32That's too far off the line.
- 1:01:34The outfield is deep.
- 1:01:36Straight away in center is Lemon.
- 1:01:38Hit.
- 1:01:40Back ball. It's the outside corner.
- 1:01:42One ball on one strike. Nobody out.
- 1:01:44White clock's leading.
- 1:01:46Four to two.
- 1:01:48Five or third inning.
- 1:01:50Brett looked in for a sign.
- 1:01:52Downing behind the plate.
- 1:01:54Weed wagging signs.
- 1:01:56Good guy to get for a double play because he can't run too good.
- 1:01:58But he's got good power.
- 1:02:00He can't make a mistake on it.
- 1:02:02He's got fires over first base and almost kept him.
- 1:02:04Torre just died back safely.
- 1:02:06And Warner says a few words to him.
- 1:02:08People have a running run out of the park if he gets picked off.
- 1:02:10They really want to win.
- 1:02:12They're exciting baseball fans.
- 1:02:14That's about now.
- 1:02:16Hit.
- 1:02:18Ah-ha. He wanted to go after the changes.
- 1:02:20My turn for a ball.
- 1:02:22A year ago Jimmy Brett picked 13 runners off of first base.
- 1:02:24And over woods.
- 1:02:26It picked 13 off in one year.
- 1:02:28So with a combination of those two.
- 1:02:30Plus Delcant looked like he had a pretty good move.
- 1:02:32He's wearing training.
- 1:02:34He'll make those plays.
- 1:02:36Those runners on it. Two balls in one strike.
- 1:02:38Brett taking his time now.
- 1:02:40Shakes off the sign.
- 1:02:42Goes to the belt.
- 1:02:44He goes over to first base.
- 1:02:46And he almost goes as well.
- 1:02:48His center has to reach to his right.
- 1:02:50His center.
- 1:02:52As good as Love Man has ever wanted to be.
- 1:02:54Knows how to play the position.
- 1:02:56Shaves a lot of errors in those.
- 1:02:58He's a ball in the dirt.
- 1:03:00All can pick a lot of things.
- 1:03:02He's set up now. He wears number 25.
- 1:03:04Here's a pitch.
- 1:03:06Four nine.
- 1:03:08He's out of here.
- 1:03:10All the way to the home run.
- 1:03:12He's all tight up.
- 1:03:14He's all getting the breaking ball out of the way.
- 1:03:16He needs the line right over the right field.
- 1:03:18And that ball went out in the hurry.
- 1:03:20He's going to hit his ballpark.
- 1:03:22So that's two home runs for all.
- 1:03:24He may own this now.
- 1:03:26He's got the ball in the eye.
- 1:03:28As two runs scored.
- 1:03:30He's leading the lead in the club and everybody.
- 1:03:32Now here goes some activity down the bullpen.
- 1:03:34And in the bottom of the third inning.
- 1:03:36The game is all tied up.
- 1:03:38Four to four.
- 1:03:40Hit number six.
- 1:03:42Three.
- 1:03:44Out of the lead.
- 1:03:46This guy can hit it out too on you.
- 1:03:48He's going to center field deep the first time up.
- 1:03:50And he holds his hand up.
- 1:03:52After he up on up a little time.
- 1:03:54And he takes in.
- 1:03:56And he's going to round for a third.
- 1:03:58Hit the breaking ball. He rides.
- 1:04:00Mario's warming up for the white rock.
- 1:04:02Talking with Stan Williams.
- 1:04:04He says Mario's would be a long reliever.
- 1:04:06Along with Bart Johnson.
- 1:04:08The one strike pitch.
- 1:04:10Inside corner fastball strike two.
- 1:04:12So.
- 1:04:14Great foul.
- 1:04:16He's up a home run.
- 1:04:18It comes out with two great pitches.
- 1:04:20A good curve ball going away first.
- 1:04:22Have a fastball outside.
- 1:04:24One ball of two strikes.
- 1:04:26Bottom of the third inning.
- 1:04:28Game all tied. Four to four.
- 1:04:30Outfield. Big hole in left center.
- 1:04:32Garb. Not too deep.
- 1:04:34Had the pitch going on a breaking ball.
- 1:04:36He took a little off it.
- 1:04:38He strikes the lead out.
- 1:04:40And that'll bring up Gary Wurtz.
- 1:04:42He got a base hit.
- 1:04:44First time on the deep total base.
- 1:04:46He's going to be able to record a run.
- 1:04:48They made a change from
- 1:04:50right field to center field with him.
- 1:04:52When they found that bowling couldn't do the job.
- 1:04:54And they put bowling in right field.
- 1:04:56Brett working quick.
- 1:04:58Ordered up with it.
- 1:05:00Took it over to second base.
- 1:05:02Route number two.
- 1:05:04Brett.
- 1:05:06Getting behind in the hitters.
- 1:05:08And I thought that
- 1:05:10Paulz had a real good pitch.
- 1:05:12I did too.
- 1:05:14I was hoping that it would occur a foul.
- 1:05:16But it hit it so well that it didn't have time.
- 1:05:18This field seems short
- 1:05:20and 3-30. I'd like to measure it.
- 1:05:22Now the hitters see bowling.
- 1:05:24Paulz off the first pitch
- 1:05:26and goes behind the plate.
- 1:05:28Paulz was up the first time I mentioned.
- 1:05:30A little bit I saw him last year.
- 1:05:32I was impressed. More so today.
- 1:05:34Brett's got four strikeouts.
- 1:05:36The one strike pitch.
- 1:05:38That's got to wait for him.
- 1:05:40He's trying to sounding up.
- 1:05:42I didn't quite get where that was.
- 1:05:44A strike or not.
- 1:05:46One ball outside.
- 1:05:48One ball and one strike.
- 1:05:50As it goes up on the scoreboard.
- 1:05:52There's two outs.
- 1:05:54Now Brett looks at it's outstair.
- 1:05:56He's within the whole and right center field.
- 1:05:58The one-one delivery.
- 1:06:00Paulz goes in the dirt.
- 1:06:02He's just away from downy.
- 1:06:04He picks it up and rubs it up.
- 1:06:06So now,
- 1:06:08the right side step for getting some runs.
- 1:06:10Paulz even.
- 1:06:12Four to four.
- 1:06:14With this Aceter Flandy.
- 1:06:16Two balls and one strike.
- 1:06:18There's two outs.
- 1:06:20Geronimo Blue Day.
- 1:06:22The first games of them in Major League Baseball.
- 1:06:24Fastball outside.
- 1:06:26Two balls, two strikes and two outs.
- 1:06:28Time deck. Garcia.
- 1:06:32You know, you look at a guy like this bowling.
- 1:06:34He looks like he could hit one out.
- 1:06:36He's got a fastball playing on.
- 1:06:38The scoreboard was wrong.
- 1:06:40I was wrong.
- 1:06:42Two.
- 1:06:44Three.
- 1:06:46We go at Panda Deliverers.
- 1:06:48Fastball hit out for a shortstop.
- 1:06:50Panda's got a one-half pass over the first phase.
- 1:06:52So out on the three.
- 1:06:54So not before the Blue Jays get a couple of runs.
- 1:06:56And the score out to three points of play.
- 1:06:58The White Sox four.
- 1:07:00The Blue Jays score.
- 1:07:02It's been a huge remit.
- 1:07:04That you're standing next to a beautiful,
- 1:07:06believing 1977 Chevrolet Chevrolet.
- 1:07:08Hanson is the new Blue Jays.
- 1:07:10And I'm sure you can see he could get his price.
- 1:07:12This Chevrolet Malibu Coupe has a coach window
- 1:07:14and a normal coupe roof line.
- 1:07:16It has fiberglass radio time.
- 1:07:18It has a pork oil suspension.
- 1:07:20How do you know that?
- 1:07:22It's hidden with your wipers and dozens of other features
- 1:07:24to make it a very complete and sized car.
- 1:07:26Now what do you think is the price of this Chevrolet?
- 1:07:28It's not $6,000.
- 1:07:30Not $5,000.
- 1:07:32Not even $4,000.
- 1:07:34It's $3,885.
- 1:07:36That's when you factor in
- 1:07:38the terms of just retail prices
- 1:07:40and new preparation.
- 1:07:42Price higher in California than the tax license destination charge
- 1:07:44available equipment additional
- 1:07:46$3,885.
- 1:07:48Beautiful price.
- 1:07:50Beautiful car.
- 1:07:52A smart, complete, and sized Chevrolet Chevrolet.
- 1:07:54Chevrolet.
- 1:07:56Chevrolet.
- 1:07:58Warren Brown back in Toronto, Canada.
- 1:08:00As we go to the floor.
- 1:08:02The White Sox four runs on eight hits.
- 1:08:04The Blue Jays four runs on six hits.
- 1:08:06We've had three home runs today.
- 1:08:08Richie's disc is solo home run for the White Sox.
- 1:08:10And Doug Alves is solo home run for Texas.
- 1:08:12I was rather, he's his old 12-year-old
- 1:08:14for Toronto and a two-run homer for Toronto.
- 1:08:16And now to separate and tell you about it.
- 1:08:18Here in the four-fitting is Harry Carey.
- 1:08:20Hi, Lauren. Thank you very much.
- 1:08:22Hello again, everybody.
- 1:08:24Well, just a wow, isn't it?
- 1:08:26Well, I'm afraid of the Miss James.
- 1:08:28It looks like whoever that class is going to win
- 1:08:30and we're on to the class.
- 1:08:32They're the home team.
- 1:08:34Both teams are going really well.
- 1:08:36But for a sensational play
- 1:08:38by Alan Ballester, this ballgame
- 1:08:40might be already down the drain.
- 1:08:42Here we go to the top of the four-fitting.
- 1:08:44Here's George Orton to lead it off.
- 1:08:46Let's catch this open roll.
- 1:08:48Pete Weber finally gets it.
- 1:08:50He's going to win.
- 1:08:52He's going to win.
- 1:08:54He's going to win.
- 1:08:56He's going to win.
- 1:08:58He's going to win.
- 1:09:00He's going to win.
- 1:09:02Pete Weber finally
- 1:09:04of Galesburg, Illinois, and South Bend, Indiana.
- 1:09:06Here with now working for
- 1:09:08Buffalo New York radio station
- 1:09:10watching the game.
- 1:09:12Here's a picture of the swings in the Missy.
- 1:09:16Time for the fourth with the score tied at four.
- 1:09:18Bill Singer's gone all the way
- 1:09:20against Tim Brett.
- 1:09:22Now the pitch is a wow,
- 1:09:24but hey, almost it's just
- 1:09:26his shot like behind the plate.
- 1:09:28Singer has been accused of throwing
- 1:09:30footballs.
- 1:09:32And the way he's fiddling his balls
- 1:09:34is starting and dipping.
- 1:09:36And the way the snow has been coming down,
- 1:09:38maybe he's throwing
- 1:09:40footballs unintentionally.
- 1:09:46Two balls in a straight.
- 1:09:48We fiddled along,
- 1:09:50but there's no doubt that the White Rocks
- 1:09:52are going to make the run.
- 1:09:54One of the pitching and defense
- 1:09:56can hold the opposition,
- 1:09:58but he's a good example.
- 1:10:00Brett, you're ace, pitcher.
- 1:10:02You're giving four runs on the first two innings.
- 1:10:04Yet you're only tied, four-four.
- 1:10:06There's a picture of
- 1:10:08swings on a high drive
- 1:10:10twisting in the
- 1:10:12foul territory that's
- 1:10:14dropped by Scott. The wind
- 1:10:16dropped that ball right back to Scott,
- 1:10:18who thought it was going to go under the stand.
- 1:10:20One away. Here's what he's
- 1:10:22used to, he was homing in doubles,
- 1:10:24and his first two American leagues
- 1:10:26were the White Rocks.
- 1:10:28Number 22, the right fiddler,
- 1:10:30Richie Zinn.
- 1:10:32What a help nobody on. Tied four-four.
- 1:10:36Now the wind
- 1:10:38up the pitch here, there's
- 1:10:40the strikeoff.
- 1:10:42You don't have to duck off, it hit his second
- 1:10:44home under the game, or Brett.
- 1:10:46To tie up the ball game,
- 1:10:48he retired by Les Woods and Bowling
- 1:10:50in honor and looked better than he had
- 1:10:52time previously.
- 1:10:58One strike and a
- 1:11:00bit.
- 1:11:02One out, nobody on, ball game
- 1:11:04on the fourth.
- 1:11:06That's his, look out, high
- 1:11:08and inside.
- 1:11:14That is a spectator, he's
- 1:11:16frozen
- 1:11:18in the leading.
- 1:11:20There's a wild one that hits
- 1:11:22the ground in front of the plate.
- 1:11:26Right hand hitter up there, Richie Zinn.
- 1:11:28What a help nobody on.
- 1:11:34And that scoreboard is wrong, it should
- 1:11:36be at least two balls.
- 1:11:40Now, finger gets stuck.
- 1:11:46Out of pitch, strong,
- 1:11:48and it's in.
- 1:11:52The scoreboard is incorrect.
- 1:11:54It's two and two.
- 1:11:58Two balls, two strikes, one out.
- 1:12:00Nobody on, but score
- 1:12:02tied.
- 1:12:04Now the finger
- 1:12:06goes into the wind up the delivery.
- 1:12:10He's stuck in the out.
- 1:12:12This goes on swinging.
- 1:12:14Boy, that's such a lot of balls with
- 1:12:16a punch.
- 1:12:18The ball is not
- 1:12:19as big as the ball,
- 1:12:21the ball is not as large
- 1:12:23as change the symbol to
- 1:12:24gamer on.
- 1:12:26White shots, where the aggressor
- 1:12:28is.
- 1:12:30And now finger seems to have
- 1:12:32settled out.
- 1:12:34There's puncher one out of two,
- 1:12:36going
- 1:12:38tied for four.
- 1:12:40And now the ball is
- 1:12:42in the first.
- 1:12:44And then with the
- 1:12:46second and third, the second hit
- 1:12:48of all, even more sharply,
- 1:12:50head for center field, only to
- 1:12:52have finger to stab it and throw
- 1:12:54him out.
- 1:12:56Two balls and nothing.
- 1:12:58Off to gamble with the next.
- 1:13:06Score tied.
- 1:13:08That's how many have got around the
- 1:13:10foot.
- 1:13:12He's going.
- 1:13:16Both coaches.
- 1:13:18With their hands in their back pocket.
- 1:13:20Let's pause here for station
- 1:13:22identification.
- 1:13:24This is WMAQ.
- 1:13:26Chicago.
- 1:13:32Terri-Terry back in Toronto.
- 1:13:34Here's the picture.
- 1:13:36He's going to be swinging.
- 1:13:38He's going to be swinging.
- 1:13:40Not even to count. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:13:42Spencer going to the long run.
- 1:13:46Oscar Gamble will be up there next.
- 1:13:50Two better outs, nobody on.
- 1:13:54Now the signal given.
- 1:13:56Now the pitcher it is.
- 1:13:58There's the line.
- 1:14:00Shot the right field for the hit.
- 1:14:02Almost got over bowling pass.
- 1:14:04No center makes it two out of three.
- 1:14:06With the line swing of the right.
- 1:14:10That's the main hit for the white box.
- 1:14:18Here's Oscar Gamble looking for his first hit.
- 1:14:20He just joined the white box today.
- 1:14:22After being acquired from the New York Yankees.
- 1:14:28The Blue Jays have a...
- 1:14:30The Blue Jays.
- 1:14:34Slogan in the dressing room that apparently comes from
- 1:14:36Ray Clapp the owner of the San Diego Padresas here today.
- 1:14:40Ray Clapp being the founder of McDonald's.
- 1:14:44I think the card one.
- 1:14:46There's a pitcher strike call over the outside corner.
- 1:14:48Click on. Nothing in this world can take the place of this...
- 1:14:52Palace would not.
- 1:14:54Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.
- 1:14:56Genius will not.
- 1:14:58Unrewarded genius is almost the proverb.
- 1:15:00Here's a fed blow outside.
- 1:15:02Education will not.
- 1:15:04The world is full of educated derelicts.
- 1:15:06Persistence and determination are omnipotent.
- 1:15:14Our ball and a strike.
- 1:15:16Well done killer.
- 1:15:18A supplemental hit to the Yankees.
- 1:15:22Not bothered about the owner, George Steinbrenner.
- 1:15:24Whoa!
- 1:15:26Ball goes to ball for the strike.
- 1:15:34He thinks that Billy Martin is going to be fired by Steinbrenner.
- 1:15:38And he thinks Steinbrenner interferes with the Yankees too much.
- 1:15:46Two balls and a strike.
- 1:15:50Outside ball.
- 1:15:52Three.
- 1:15:54Three balls and a strike.
- 1:16:00Ball game of the fourth.
- 1:16:06Out of stretch.
- 1:16:08What's that?
- 1:16:10Oh! He's going in an awful fit.
- 1:16:12That would have been ball four.
- 1:16:14A mile outside.
- 1:16:16Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:16:18That's your gamble.
- 1:16:20It used to be with a cup.
- 1:16:22That was Cleveland.
- 1:16:24Later with the Yankees.
- 1:16:28Now the runner's front field is going with the fifth.
- 1:16:30Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:16:32The strike.
- 1:16:34Steps out the rubber.
- 1:16:36Gets back on.
- 1:16:38Gets that again.
- 1:16:40Delivered.
- 1:16:42Gammel's swinging his bad pitches.
- 1:16:44Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:16:48Left hand hitter digging in.
- 1:16:50Jim Spencer.
- 1:16:52With two outs.
- 1:16:54Three and two on the hitter.
- 1:16:56Will be going with the fifth.
- 1:17:02Now ready?
- 1:17:08There goes the runner.
- 1:17:10Ball four is low.
- 1:17:12He almost went with that.
- 1:17:14He held up and died.
- 1:17:16Here's Alan Satterholm.
- 1:17:18The runner's the first and second at two outs.
- 1:17:20Satterholm is the one out of two.
- 1:17:22Satterholm is out of hit.
- 1:17:24Bandit is out of hit.
- 1:17:26Horses are zippers.
- 1:17:28This has two hits.
- 1:17:30Spencer two.
- 1:17:32Gammel has walked twice.
- 1:17:34Downing has two hits.
- 1:17:36Here's the fifth.
- 1:17:38Outside a breaking ball.
- 1:17:40Two strikes.
- 1:17:42Runner's the first and second.
- 1:17:44We're in the top of the fourth.
- 1:17:52Now from the belt ready.
- 1:17:54Hitch to Satterholm.
- 1:17:56Low ball two.
- 1:17:58That's lemon will be up there next.
- 1:18:02It's not an official ball game yet.
- 1:18:06Right hand hitter waiting.
- 1:18:08Three balls no strikes.
- 1:18:10The strikes.
- 1:18:12The press.
- 1:18:14I fall inside ball three.
- 1:18:18Now right hand has started warming up for the Blue Jays.
- 1:18:22Clean up as the counter is Satterholm.
- 1:18:26The press the press.
- 1:18:28Press over the outside corner for me.
- 1:18:32Finger is struggling through like press.
- 1:18:34Three balls and a strike.
- 1:18:36Down a stretch.
- 1:18:38The press.
- 1:18:40Here it is.
- 1:18:42There's a high fly ball.
- 1:18:44That'll be caught.
- 1:18:46Left field shot waiting.
- 1:18:48We have to do the landing shot.
- 1:18:50One hit more.
- 1:18:52Two left.
- 1:18:54The guard at the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:18:56The historic tie.
- 1:18:58White shot for Blue Jays four.
- 1:19:00The press.
- 1:19:04Have you ever noticed?
- 1:19:06How much you like they are?
- 1:19:08I'll talk about the finest in radio.
- 1:19:10Main ray.
- 1:19:12A master of the broad.
- 1:19:14All I care about is the pace.
- 1:19:16Maybe it is.
- 1:19:18The unique fire brooming.
- 1:19:20I don't know.
- 1:19:22But once you face those there.
- 1:19:24You know it is.
- 1:19:26That's right.
- 1:19:28The pace is good.
- 1:19:30The operate.
- 1:19:32That's right.
- 1:19:36When we say we're having cash call.
- 1:19:38It's all over Chicago land.
- 1:19:40We mean it.
- 1:19:42Good morning.
- 1:19:44This is Lee Sturwood calling from WMAQ.
- 1:19:46You just won two brand new cars.
- 1:19:48And three thousand dollars in cash.
- 1:19:50What is it?
- 1:20:04Well, if you're an organist.
- 1:20:06Remind yourself.
- 1:20:10Home and day.
- 1:20:12We'll be back Tuesday afternoon.
- 1:20:14One Sunday's game against the Boston Reds.
- 1:20:16And then big bounce.
- 1:20:18I'm not talking about the big bounce.
- 1:20:20I'm talking about the big bounce.
- 1:20:22We'll be entertaining us again.
- 1:20:26We're going in the bottom of the Porsche.
- 1:20:28I mean.
- 1:20:30You know earlier that now they
- 1:20:32had a political glomble here.
- 1:20:34But whether they could sell beer in the ballpark or not.
- 1:20:36Right now it's not.
- 1:20:38And all these fans were chanting.
- 1:20:40We want beer.
- 1:20:42We want beer.
- 1:20:44Of course we're a big thing.
- 1:20:46and take over 19.
- 1:20:48The power plays out.
- 1:20:50We won't throw.
- 1:20:52We won't throw.
- 1:20:54Garcia will lead it off.
- 1:20:56He's single in a run in the second inning.
- 1:20:58Red now finds himself in the tie.
- 1:21:024-4.
- 1:21:04The pitch.
- 1:21:06Long and he's bothered out of play off to the right.
- 1:21:08No slowing but ever so lightly now.
- 1:21:12Well, I'll see what Lenny Randall is
- 1:21:16his first loser of the year.
- 1:21:18$23,407.
- 1:21:20He was fine.
- 1:21:22Here's the pitch went on.
- 1:21:24Fly ball's set afield.
- 1:21:26Lemon's coming on in his justice.
- 1:21:28He bounces over his head and there goes Landon in the second inning.
- 1:21:30Lemon's played that off.
- 1:21:32He must not have seen it.
- 1:21:34Instead of an easy routine,
- 1:21:36fly ball out.
- 1:21:38It winds up a double.
- 1:21:40Maybe lost it in the stone point.
- 1:21:42So there's the go ahead Landon's scoring position.
- 1:21:44Where he's very unhappy out there.
- 1:21:46Is there a way to gain McCray's?
- 1:21:48Runner in the scoring position, nobody out.
- 1:21:58And Dave McCay, the third baseman.
- 1:22:00Dave McCay, the third baseman.
- 1:22:02And Dave McCay, the third baseman.
- 1:22:04And Dave McCay, the third baseman.
- 1:22:06And Dave McCay, the third baseman.
- 1:22:08And Dave McCay, the third baseman.
- 1:22:10Landon out with a chance to go ahead.
- 1:22:14Line's right, they set.
- 1:22:16He's a go ahead, Landon.
- 1:22:18Chris touched the ball off.
- 1:22:20Firing the ball to Landon.
- 1:22:30McCay has the very first pitch
- 1:22:32like a bullet in the right center.
- 1:22:34Nice play by Chris
- 1:22:36Captain from early to the long.
- 1:22:42And Fred may not be
- 1:22:44meant for this game much longer.
- 1:22:50As he ain't set off, there's nobody out here in the fourth.
- 1:22:52That's your win to do.
- 1:22:54And they have legally hit the ball hard
- 1:22:56over their first double
- 1:22:58Chinookin's shot.
- 1:23:00Double here in the center.
- 1:23:02And he's out.
- 1:23:07He was robbed on a sensational play
- 1:23:09by Bannister.
- 1:23:11He takes the fastball for a strike off.
- 1:23:19He was hit with a $2,000 fine.
- 1:23:22$500 each day.
- 1:23:24He moved.
- 1:23:26He's out to run it back.
- 1:23:32There's a lead by McCay.
- 1:23:34We're over there.
- 1:23:36Lead back.
- 1:23:40Let's see how they're going to play it here
- 1:23:42the Blue Jays.
- 1:23:49So long took the first pitch for a strike off.
- 1:23:52Jackie Moore coaching at first base.
- 1:23:58Harry Warner at first base.
- 1:24:04McCay, edging off first.
- 1:24:08Look at that.
- 1:24:10There's a five-on and a seven-on.
- 1:24:12That's the base hit.
- 1:24:14Off to the front of him.
- 1:24:17That is Leonard Diner's first stretch
- 1:24:19and nobody else.
- 1:24:28Three hits for the roll.
- 1:24:30And here comes Bob Lemon.
- 1:24:31That's going to be off the breath.
- 1:24:39And Bob Lemon is parking to him out there.
- 1:24:42We'll have a new trick for it coming in.
- 1:24:51That's the other spireos.
- 1:24:57They're all huddled around the mouth.
- 1:24:59Five to four in papercloth.
- 1:25:13That's the spireos.
- 1:25:15We'll take over from Brett.
- 1:25:17Brett tips three in here.
- 1:25:19He allowed nine hits.
- 1:25:23Five runs of responsibility
- 1:25:25for the man on base to long-term.
- 1:25:32He struck out four
- 1:25:35and didn't walk anybody.
- 1:25:40So, the spireos are right-handed.
- 1:25:43We'll take over.
- 1:25:45Brett can...
- 1:25:47The only decision Brett could get in this game
- 1:25:49would be a defeat.
- 1:25:51There's no way he could win it
- 1:25:53because he did not pitch as a starter
- 1:25:55the necessary five innings.
- 1:26:00The White House had
- 1:26:02been looking for Chicago number 46
- 1:26:04and had nine hits from Spelts
- 1:26:06and only four left.
- 1:26:17The spireos are hard-killing right-handed.
- 1:26:19It's pretty sharp as practice starts.
- 1:26:24The White House will be back home
- 1:26:26against the Boston Red Sox
- 1:26:28Tuesday afternoon.
- 1:26:30We'll also play Wednesday afternoon.
- 1:26:32White House's business manager,
- 1:26:34Rooney Schaefer here,
- 1:26:36where he opened,
- 1:26:38Rooney was the general manager
- 1:26:40for the Toronto Leap Maple Leaf.
- 1:26:42They were the international race.
- 1:26:44They were owned by Jackabt Cook.
- 1:26:51Jackabt Cook, who now owns
- 1:26:53the Lakers and other things
- 1:26:55on the line of law back to the
- 1:26:57Lakers, is Don Scott.
- 1:26:59He's always interested in
- 1:27:01getting things to the franchise of Toronto.
- 1:27:03He never cooked.
- 1:27:07This Scott,
- 1:27:08who's one of the first and second
- 1:27:10in the world to get somebody out,
- 1:27:15little boys,
- 1:27:21and victory, do next.
- 1:27:25They're expecting him to bust.
- 1:27:27He's placed the fund as if to swing away
- 1:27:29and put the pitch inside ball one.
- 1:27:31One ball on those strats.
- 1:27:35Don is the first to talk.
- 1:27:37Our Weston Union ticker is not working.
- 1:27:40We can't give you any other scores.
- 1:27:45Nothing seems to be working here
- 1:27:47in the ballpark.
- 1:27:49There's a ball but on the right,
- 1:27:51they only get a whole plant there.
- 1:27:53And they do.
- 1:27:54But Barry owns the starter hall.
- 1:27:56Scott's trying to sacrifice.
- 1:27:58He's trying to sacrifice.
- 1:28:05Well, that leaves runners at first
- 1:28:07and second with one out.
- 1:28:09And I was bummed hard back to Mario's
- 1:28:11but the starter hall had broken in
- 1:28:13and he had a retreat.
- 1:28:15And Mario's had a hidden moving target.
- 1:28:19But he hit him perfectly for the out.
- 1:28:22One John,
- 1:28:24and the Tori's going to be the hitter here.
- 1:28:33We'll see if we can have a big hitter.
- 1:28:36Jim Mason.
- 1:28:38Jim Mason is going to hit for Tori.
- 1:28:41Left handed batter.
- 1:28:44Mason will replace Tori to judge box.
- 1:28:49Mason was with the Yankees last year.
- 1:28:51Hit from 180.
- 1:28:53Better hitter than that.
- 1:28:55The runners at first and second one gone.
- 1:29:06Ryan Downing
- 1:29:08moving Lemon older towards the left center.
- 1:29:13As Mason steps to the play.
- 1:29:15He was blind to forward and save
- 1:29:17for the Blue Jays, the ball game,
- 1:29:19and the bottom of the four.
- 1:29:21And here he is.
- 1:29:38Mason no more for his feeling than his hitting.
- 1:29:40Left handed batter.
- 1:29:42Used to be able to take the Rangers.
- 1:29:44The pitch will get outside.
- 1:29:47It was the Rangers and the Yankees for the last three years.
- 1:29:52There's never had more.
- 1:29:55Only had one year's high to 50.
- 1:29:59Mario's ready to punch.
- 1:30:01Fast follow the load.
- 1:30:04Dargoff, who's come into the ball game.
- 1:30:07With two homers.
- 1:30:09The second one coming with a man on the top,
- 1:30:11the ball game, and the third.
- 1:30:13He's on deck.
- 1:30:17Now the stretch.
- 1:30:19The pitch.
- 1:30:21Ball off, and he's high.
- 1:30:23And now the Blue Jays are in a spot
- 1:30:25to break the game wide open.
- 1:30:27Already a pick in the lead,
- 1:30:29five to four, have run as the first and second.
- 1:30:32The pitch is as you may turn up there.
- 1:30:37But only one out.
- 1:30:39Now Mario's gets cut.
- 1:30:43The pitch.
- 1:30:45Right down the middle of Goodfile,
- 1:30:47small first strike far.
- 1:30:53Three balls in a strike.
- 1:30:55Runners the first and second, one away.
- 1:30:58Five to four, Toronto.
- 1:31:00Now the stretch.
- 1:31:02The pitch.
- 1:31:03High, top ball, out of play.
- 1:31:05Into the sand.
- 1:31:07Souvenir for someone.
- 1:31:09It hit the number of hands.
- 1:31:11Or they don't concept from Souvenir's here.
- 1:31:15They don't fight walk like you do in other places.
- 1:31:21Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:31:23I guess that's today the end of House of the Balladies.
- 1:31:28It seems the runners will be going on the three to pitch.
- 1:31:32Now the stretch.
- 1:31:34Three to.
- 1:31:36There they go.
- 1:31:38The pitch.
- 1:31:39Ball four high.
- 1:31:41Boy oh boy.
- 1:31:42It seems that the runner's trying to have the two men.
- 1:31:45Pung up.
- 1:31:49Salon and slip.
- 1:31:51And put run towards first.
- 1:31:53For the bases later now.
- 1:31:55And here's the hero of the day.
- 1:31:57Dog off.
- 1:31:58The motion of the cloud.
- 1:32:10The hands are here over there.
- 1:32:12Dog off.
- 1:32:13The motion of the cloud.
- 1:32:29Well, that hurt himself.
- 1:32:31But the runner on first base.
- 1:32:36Got running.
- 1:32:37And the runner on second base.
- 1:32:39The runner on starting.
- 1:32:40Well, slip and went to his knees.
- 1:32:45So they were both here second base.
- 1:32:47When the pitch was made to the plate.
- 1:32:49And the ball bit of straight.
- 1:32:51And it had been out of the inning.
- 1:32:53But it was a ball and the bases were loaded.
- 1:32:56The infield could have played back to the double plays.
- 1:32:58And here's Dog off.
- 1:33:00With Wally two out of the ballpark already.
- 1:33:03And winded the pitch.
- 1:33:05Well, there they go.
- 1:33:06What a sunny head.
- 1:33:07Holy cow.
- 1:33:09And they get to see why he hits over.
- 1:33:12Oh.
- 1:33:16But Boomer infected.
- 1:33:20Out of the Rangers last year.
- 1:33:23Gets 25 homers with Sacramento.
- 1:33:31He's hitting with Sacramento.
- 1:33:33Well, he's run for hard of that pitch.
- 1:33:39One out of the shoes.
- 1:33:41He had to tighten it again.
- 1:33:45One strike and nothing.
- 1:33:48Bases loaded.
- 1:33:49What else?
- 1:33:50All home in the first with two out.
- 1:33:52Home in the third with the man on to tie it up.
- 1:33:55Don't know.
- 1:33:59One strike and nothing.
- 1:34:00The wind of the pitch.
- 1:34:03Little bit inside the breaking wall.
- 1:34:06And the town evens up the ball in a straight.
- 1:34:09Francisco Barrios.
- 1:34:12That affixed the White Trotter on the trouble.
- 1:34:15Infield back hoping for the double play.
- 1:34:18The wind of the pitch.
- 1:34:21Dog off.
- 1:34:22That was a great stop.
- 1:34:23Tell a second one.
- 1:34:24That a first two.
- 1:34:25Double play to get out of the inning.
- 1:34:27First place in a leg.
- 1:34:30My father.
- 1:34:31Oh,
- 1:34:34he made a backhand and lunching stop.
- 1:34:36Fire door to relate to the first.
- 1:34:38And that's the tires aside.
- 1:34:40That's twice.
- 1:34:41That is the ball game.
- 1:34:43And one.
- 1:34:46We have to get.
- 1:34:47The.
- 1:34:48At the end of the four.
- 1:34:50It's the blue James of the first five.
- 1:34:52The one.
- 1:34:57On the course level.
- 1:34:59We have to.
- 1:35:00The.
- 1:35:01One.
- 1:35:02And we got.
- 1:35:03To.
- 1:35:04The.
- 1:35:05One.
- 1:35:06One.
- 1:35:07One.
- 1:35:08One.
- 1:35:09One.
- 1:35:10One.
- 1:35:11One.
- 1:35:12One.
- 1:35:13One.
- 1:35:14One.
- 1:35:15One.
- 1:35:16One.
- 1:35:17One.
- 1:35:18One.
- 1:35:19One.
- 1:35:20One.
- 1:35:21One.
- 1:35:22Two.
- 1:35:23Two.
- 1:35:24One.
- 1:35:25One.
- 1:35:26One.
- 1:35:27Two.
- 1:35:28One.
- 1:35:29Two.
- 1:35:30One.
- 1:35:31One.
- 1:35:32I said it's back and forth.
- 1:35:33م
- 1:35:34One.
- 1:35:35One.
- 1:35:36One.
- 1:35:39One.
- 1:35:42One.
- 1:35:45One.
- 1:35:46Popeye.
- 1:35:47One.
- 1:35:49Two.
- 1:35:50Harry, carry, Jimmy Fisseloff, back to the ballpark, there's still buzzing about that.
- 1:36:04Great play by Diverston that's pumped the white rock to the ball game, and that ball's
- 1:36:08through, full and score, there's still running.
- 1:36:10But as it is, the white rock's failed by only one, and that's the second time in a comparable
- 1:36:16situation today that Diverston kept working to score.
- 1:36:19Jimmy, you are in the outfield, and what's the problem with just that phase of all out there,
- 1:36:24and those figures, the background, are what?
- 1:36:26I don't think he's thinking it's coming to him, because that one ball he throws so far back
- 1:36:31was easy, five balls, and the other ball, he just stood there.
- 1:36:34Maybe it's the back-on, I don't know this ballpark until I talk to the referee's players,
- 1:36:38he's already playing well.
- 1:36:39We don't want to be unfair, it's just, that's what we know, but it doesn't seem like the other
- 1:36:43off-cooters are this, and the other's doesn't have any...
- 1:36:45Well, that defense, y'all, it's done better, her defense has done better, but that's what
- 1:36:52happens in the third field.
- 1:36:54All right, here's just Lemonado, lead with a line.
- 1:36:57Lemonado's nothing out of two, five of four, and the wind up the first, and Lemon takes
- 1:37:04a little bit more.
- 1:37:06I'm warming up, you got coffee, I don't like coffee.
- 1:37:09One ball, no strikes, and he can't, and he'll give me any teeth.
- 1:37:13The snow is stopped now, but it's gotten colder here, the pitch fouled off Lemon's foot, and
- 1:37:18the count evens above of the strike.
- 1:37:20The white box for the first time today are trailing.
- 1:37:23They got two in the first, all hit a homer.
- 1:37:26They got two on the second, leading four to one.
- 1:37:29Blue jade came back with one in the second, all hit another homer in the third with a
- 1:37:33man on the tie, and now they're ahead five to four.
- 1:37:36That's wonderful.
- 1:37:43I'm not sure, his average, he's got a field better in center field than he's been doing
- 1:37:48today, whether...
- 1:37:50I'm just trying to help him a little bit right now before I second-guess him, but he should
- 1:37:54have been...I think he's going to catch those balls.
- 1:37:56There's a little bit of a low outside.
- 1:37:58The other thing that's great out there is never do that, so you wonder, you know what I mean,
- 1:38:01even in bad parts.
- 1:38:03Maybe he's an experienced, I don't know, an experienced maybe he shouldn't be here, who knows.
- 1:38:08Right there, hit a wedding.
- 1:38:10He's over two today trying to get hold of one, the white box is trailing by a run.
- 1:38:15Here's Bill Singer's fit.
- 1:38:17Whoa, hi, it's...
- 1:38:19Not some guy, but he's got back with that little breaking ball.
- 1:38:23That was kind of the purpose, since he really drove it back.
- 1:38:27Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:38:29I can't believe Singer is still in there.
- 1:38:33He's been hitting him with the hook.
- 1:38:35I should say.
- 1:38:37Each team with nine hits.
- 1:38:39Two balls, two strikes, the fifth.
- 1:38:41Three innings, and he fouls it back.
- 1:38:43And he hung in there for the curve ball.
- 1:38:45There was up in his eye.
- 1:38:47My mother could hit it up in her eye.
- 1:38:49It's bigger than a hunger, too.
- 1:38:51Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:38:53Just limit.
- 1:38:55Going out again, it's about for the fifth, a long way to go.
- 1:38:59The snow has stopped, it looks like the skies are trying to clear.
- 1:39:03Off-date of all, play against Saturday.
- 1:39:05Half swing and he fouls it out of play.
- 1:39:08Saturday going to be on the air at 12.15, Chicago time, and again, Sunday.
- 1:39:13Then back home, Sunday night to play Tuesday afternoon, the home opener against the Boston Redsah.
- 1:39:21Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:39:23Ball three is high.
- 1:39:25Come on, Jeff.
- 1:39:27The warm is up.
- 1:39:29Lemon with a count of three balls, two strikes.
- 1:39:33Now to wind up the pitch here it is.
- 1:39:37Swing and he fouls it back here in a good touch.
- 1:39:41Harry, you're having a net zero.
- 1:39:43He gets it.
- 1:39:45I think so, too.
- 1:39:47We might be a little bit too far back.
- 1:39:49Nice ball for him.
- 1:39:51Didn't do a good job here.
- 1:39:53They could do something about the weather now.
- 1:39:55This is the kind of weather we opened in June, Chicago.
- 1:39:59Three, two, pitch.
- 1:40:01Fouls it back, he hung that tricky ball, and Lemon had a good cut.
- 1:40:06But didn't get it, just fouled it back.
- 1:40:09Lemon trying to get on, the strike is submitting.
- 1:40:13White's watch trailed by Ron.
- 1:40:15He's going to get some runs, he can only barrio's and throw in too good.
- 1:40:18Five to four in favor of the play of Bluejay.
- 1:40:22Bill Singer gets sucked better in 33 on the right hander.
- 1:40:27Lemon digging in.
- 1:40:29Three balls, two strikes, a pitch.
- 1:40:31It brings and he lines and fouls.
- 1:40:34Into the right field stands.
- 1:40:36Now he's hanging in the cup.
- 1:40:39By the spectators of left.
- 1:40:41They don't sell fair here, and they've gone to the corner saloon to get warm.
- 1:40:47Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:40:50Out of it.
- 1:40:52Whoa, he's rocking it out.
- 1:40:54Breaking balls, he's bottom of this five.
- 1:40:57And Lemon's radioing here, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:41:00When you're going bad, that pitch went around the plate,
- 1:41:03and he noticed how long it took to miss the call at this, so he wasn't sure either.
- 1:41:07So when you're going bad, it gets worse.
- 1:41:11Well now, it's a 10-1-1 crossover to the dugout, that hurts.
- 1:41:15It's all forward to put a runner up, but nobody out.
- 1:41:17Here's Brian Downey, two out of two today.
- 1:41:20I feel like we're in the 14th inning.
- 1:41:23What's the...
- 1:41:26What's the strikeout for Singer?
- 1:41:29There's a good sounding foul to the back.
- 1:41:32One strike and nothing.
- 1:41:34Those boxes over there, Harry, $25,000.
- 1:41:38I don't see anybody here to see.
- 1:41:41You have to put your own decorations in too.
- 1:41:44He can see how the economy appears very good.
- 1:41:47One strike and nothing to pitch on the way.
- 1:41:50He didn't mean to swing them all, it's his bad foul.
- 1:41:53Two strikes and nothing.
- 1:41:57One out.
- 1:42:00Did I see Nestor Schallink do something today?
- 1:42:03Of course, it's the first game of the season of...
- 1:42:06We've had five weeks of spring training games.
- 1:42:10Has it taken more before calling a pitch I've ever seen him do?
- 1:42:13I thought he might have missed that pitch.
- 1:42:15There's a good swim on the basis.
- 1:42:17A line shot to left for Downey.
- 1:42:20That's the way to start the year.
- 1:42:22Three out of three.
- 1:42:24So there's the tie that went on, with only one out.
- 1:42:26Here's Gar.
- 1:42:28He got an infield hitting the third.
- 1:42:30The save on an error by the third baseman of the second walk
- 1:42:33that's scored in the first.
- 1:42:36He has him zeroed in on Singer.
- 1:42:39Downey has hit the end of the bat, dribbling towards third.
- 1:42:44One he beat out.
- 1:42:46So Downey on his first base, went away.
- 1:42:50He's going to lose from that field to Ralph and Gar.
- 1:42:55Ralph can't hold the line.
- 1:43:00Out of place.
- 1:43:04Why the curve ball?
- 1:43:06He misses having trouble with the backspin.
- 1:43:13Boy would he be mad if he could hear us talking about his upfire.
- 1:43:16He is a great upfire.
- 1:43:18One ball and all strikes.
- 1:43:22Out of pitch.
- 1:43:24Gar ball, right field base hit.
- 1:43:26Will the runner go to third?
- 1:43:28No, he stops the second.
- 1:43:30Gar.
- 1:43:32Grewl to single the right.
- 1:43:34He's a good singer.
- 1:43:36He too will not be able to win no matter how this game comes out.
- 1:43:40He's taken out here because he too hasn't had five ball innings yet.
- 1:43:45Five to four.
- 1:43:47Roy Huckstein, the manager out there, that may be all.
- 1:43:52We have a right hander living up in the bullpen, isn't it?
- 1:43:56Jerry Johnson, I think.
- 1:44:03I'd be, they haven't indicated to the bullpen yet.
- 1:44:07Yes, now.
- 1:44:08And you've got your fingers, you've got your...
- 1:44:11...more to burn in at least how fast it's left.
- 1:44:16You have a lot of love ahead of you.
- 1:44:19Only four runs, surprising me enough.
- 1:44:25He walked green...
- 1:44:27...and he struck on five.
- 1:44:33Johnson coming on quite a bit.
- 1:44:35He's been in baseball since 63.
- 1:44:37Last year he was at San Diego in Hawaii.
- 1:44:40We had a seven or eight record.
- 1:44:42And he picked for the Boyard Field when he managed there.
- 1:44:46The ERA was 4.62.
- 1:44:48At San Diego he was 1-3.
- 1:44:51Jerry stands 62, weighs about 190.
- 1:44:54Who's the slider of the all-sticker pitcher?
- 1:44:57Because we're all over it.
- 1:44:58And they hope that if they get a couple of innings out of him,
- 1:45:00when they need them, that's all they're looking for.
- 1:45:02I see Charlie Sad, Ralph Gar,
- 1:45:04who's trotting the dugout, and Charlie Sad, the White Fox trainer.
- 1:45:07I guess just getting the mud out of his fight.
- 1:45:10Downing is the second base. Gar will be at first.
- 1:45:13You know, there's Jerry Johnson, he's been around.
- 1:45:16He's the third baseman originally.
- 1:45:19You know that he picks in the big leagues and he's got a lot of money.
- 1:45:23He's been picking the big leagues almost 10 years ago with the Philly.
- 1:45:29He's modeled a few uniforms.
- 1:45:31Salinas, Auburn, Williamsport, Greenville, Jacksonville,
- 1:45:34San Diego, Philadelphia, Tulsa, St. Louis, San Francisco, Cleveland,
- 1:45:38Denver, Houston, Hawaii.
- 1:45:41San Diego. I couldn't read already.
- 1:45:43I think you did that well.
- 1:45:45I just feel like I give a little bit.
- 1:45:47Because he has got the longest record of any pitcher down the track.
- 1:45:51He's a pitcher with San Diego.
- 1:45:53As Jimmy told you, he had a higher run average.
- 1:45:55And he'll be coming in here to face Bannister.
- 1:45:58We're going to rumble the base in a second.
- 1:46:01Think about if a pitcher has a tough time on his attitude.
- 1:46:04If he throws it down and he wants it to be hit on the ground,
- 1:46:06and he hits it, they go quickly and shoot through there.
- 1:46:09Especially today.
- 1:46:10You know, just to show you the fallacy of judging on basis of the starting average.
- 1:46:18Bannister has won him today, driving in the run.
- 1:46:21He has saved at least five runs.
- 1:46:23Maybe who knows how many.
- 1:46:25Who knows how far they get it with a guard
- 1:46:27and he's not come up with an exactive play.
- 1:46:31So with two defensive plays, he's accounted for more runs
- 1:46:35than most sluggers drive in on a good day.
- 1:46:38And he's going to get better, they tell me.
- 1:46:40And he's going to know how good he was.
- 1:46:42He doesn't look too strong, but he certainly is making the plays.
- 1:46:44And he swings that bet fairly good.
- 1:46:47So here's the pitch by Jerry Johnson.
- 1:46:49And it's over this drive, oh what.
- 1:46:51One ball, a little strained, or it'll be up their neck.
- 1:46:53Jerry Johnson, a big right-hander, stands six-two.
- 1:46:56He's got to keep out of a double flake,
- 1:46:58because we've got to get an order up there.
- 1:47:00Or it's up their neck.
- 1:47:01We've got to get him up there.
- 1:47:02And he's due for one.
- 1:47:03Now the stretch to pitch to Bannister.
- 1:47:06There's a line drive, there's third base.
- 1:47:09No chance to get the double play.
- 1:47:11Downing plate is smart and so did guard.
- 1:47:13Waiting to see the ball go through first.
- 1:47:16Bannister hit a rope, but right after the key.
- 1:47:19No, that's too good.
- 1:47:21And here's Orca.
- 1:47:23He's over the first run for the white box,
- 1:47:25and the back of the high fly.
- 1:47:27He's nothing out of two officially.
- 1:47:28He's stuck out and he fouled out.
- 1:47:30Left hand batter digging in.
- 1:47:32Oh, for a long one here.
- 1:47:34We're in the fifth.
- 1:47:36Five to four in favor of Toronto.
- 1:47:38I'll take a blue-pairy.
- 1:47:39It's anything.
- 1:47:40It doesn't take anything.
- 1:47:41The zip's due next.
- 1:47:43The clouds are coming in again.
- 1:47:44Now to stretch the pitch.
- 1:47:46Curve ability.
- 1:47:48Overhand and curve ball right in there.
- 1:47:50I wish I was hidden.
- 1:47:52And that curve ball.
- 1:47:54Or to look like he was just going to take a pitch
- 1:47:56to see what Johnson throws.
- 1:48:00One strike and nothing.
- 1:48:02Runners the first and second.
- 1:48:04The right hander gets set.
- 1:48:06From the belt, the pitch.
- 1:48:10And he fouled it back and left that low fast ball.
- 1:48:12And usually that's where he hits his homeruns with.
- 1:48:16Or on.
- 1:48:17Sometimes a hitter hasn't seen a pitcher in a long time.
- 1:48:20It takes a while to adjust it.
- 1:48:21So the pitcher has got the advantage.
- 1:48:23That's two strikes and nothing.
- 1:48:26Jerry Johnson.
- 1:48:27In release.
- 1:48:30Waiting now.
- 1:48:32From the belt, the pitch.
- 1:48:34Low.
- 1:48:37Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:48:39Or to try to get hold of one of here.
- 1:48:44Also the first base were playing very deep.
- 1:48:48Second base was on right field.
- 1:48:50Now to stretch the pitch.
- 1:48:52A little tap.
- 1:48:53He was really fouled on the curve ball.
- 1:48:55And he barely kicked his ball.
- 1:48:57He's given good motion.
- 1:48:58I mean he's really reaching back and then throwing up a real slow curve ball.
- 1:49:01Oh.
- 1:49:04So.
- 1:49:05Or to the center hole.
- 1:49:07And then he strikes down the ball.
- 1:49:10Left hand batter waiting.
- 1:49:13At the belt for delivery.
- 1:49:15Here it is.
- 1:49:17He passed the right to the first base.
- 1:49:19He hasn't stepped on the bat.
- 1:49:21All run assisted.
- 1:49:22That's all that's been hard to run at him.
- 1:49:24So around two hits.
- 1:49:26No errors.
- 1:49:27Too much.
- 1:49:28The white track has stranded the 11th in five minutes.
- 1:49:31We're going to the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:49:34So far the white track full.
- 1:50:04Try Lloyd J. Harris lemon crunch fire.
- 1:50:07Rich lemon filling topping lemon streusel in a perfect flaky crust.
- 1:50:11Flavors frozen in so all you do is bait.
- 1:50:14Lloyd J. Harris lemon crunch fire.
- 1:50:17Lloyd J. Harris water park.
- 1:50:19Water park.
- 1:50:20Bat hole in the basin.
- 1:50:22You really got to try.
- 1:50:24Three-hour home with Lloyd Balani.
- 1:50:26Big sister in exciting.
- 1:50:29Lloyd J. Harris water park.
- 1:50:31Lloyd J. Harris water park.
- 1:50:34Lloyd J. Harris.
- 1:50:36Harry Carrie and Jimmy Percival.
- 1:50:38They go to the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:50:40The drop of water.
- 1:50:42He's flying the ball.
- 1:50:44The ball came up with the ball.
- 1:50:46We won't be crying for an hour.
- 1:50:48We've been out here a long time, Harry.
- 1:50:50But these fans seemingly they don't go anywhere.
- 1:50:53Because they can't drink.
- 1:50:55They sit there and they introduce the whitey board.
- 1:50:58It was great to hear the enthusiasm.
- 1:51:00The whitey board is because they came in standing ovations.
- 1:51:03Well they announced for the use of a Harlem frame.
- 1:51:06I guess you helped hit them.
- 1:51:08I put them here, sir.
- 1:51:09Right, right. I struck out a sign for him.
- 1:51:11I'll say it.
- 1:51:12I got one over on his nose.
- 1:51:13The man who fell down.
- 1:51:17A white fox.
- 1:51:19Railing byron.
- 1:51:21Half-foot up.
- 1:51:23H-pitcher.
- 1:51:24They got four on the floor.
- 1:51:26But the very first two in it.
- 1:51:28But he couldn't stay in the ballgame.
- 1:51:30And now it's up to Barrios.
- 1:51:32Barrios came in with a score of five to four.
- 1:51:35Runners the first and second and nobody else.
- 1:51:38And he got out of the inning thanks to a sensational play.
- 1:51:41By Alan Dymastok.
- 1:51:43Here's Vallez.
- 1:51:45How do Vallez?
- 1:51:47He's a designated hitter.
- 1:51:49He's having an out-the-crow.
- 1:51:51But I guess it has to be 44.
- 1:51:53He's got a lot of power.
- 1:51:55He's having an out-the-crow. But I guess it has to be 44,000.
- 1:51:59I will maybe get some other steam scores, huh?
- 1:52:02Danny.
- 1:52:06Nobody on it, nobody out.
- 1:52:12Out of the left.
- 1:52:14Swings, and he misses a breaking ball.
- 1:52:17One strike, nothing.
- 1:52:19Nobody on it, nobody out.
- 1:52:21A lot of it assisted.
- 1:52:23A Western Union ticker brings in all the scores.
- 1:52:28Which we rely on.
- 1:52:30Not working here in Canada.
- 1:52:32No doubt.
- 1:52:34Up on a strike as a fast ball is inside.
- 1:52:37Vallez.
- 1:52:39Right hand hitter, good power.
- 1:52:41Now to wind up the pitch.
- 1:52:43Swings, and there's a big dip.
- 1:52:46Vallez singles to left.
- 1:52:53And here's Gary Wood.
- 1:52:55He's one out of two.
- 1:52:58I don't think Barrios is too good either.
- 1:53:01He looks to me like this doesn't have his life fast ball today.
- 1:53:06They've had 11 base runners and scored five of them.
- 1:53:10The white box of that.
- 1:53:2015 base runners, scores four.
- 1:53:23There goes a runner to pitch inside.
- 1:53:25There's a throw at his.
- 1:53:27Play by a slow player.
- 1:53:29Boy, what an effort by Downey to pitch with way inside.
- 1:53:33He had a throw over the batter's head while lunging to his left.
- 1:53:37Way off balance. He made a perfect throw.
- 1:53:40And they almost had him at second base.
- 1:53:42Vallez, on a close play, is roll safe.
- 1:53:47He knocked the wind out of himself.
- 1:53:51But he's going to stay in it.
- 1:53:53Remember we were talking in the spring that Downey would have to release quicker.
- 1:53:56I believe he's worked so hard that he's mastered it.
- 1:53:59And that play right there, he was stumbling to the left and still threw the ball.
- 1:54:02He almost got it. It was a bang bang play.
- 1:54:05Somehow they have a man in scoring position with nobody else.
- 1:54:16Now let's see what Gary Woods is going to do here.
- 1:54:19He's fast to beat on the front earlier in the ballgame.
- 1:54:25You know, they only use Vallez against left handers.
- 1:54:27They only use Gary Woods against left handers.
- 1:54:29But against the right handed barrios, both are staying in the hit.
- 1:54:34And Vallez, single the left.
- 1:54:36Let's see what Woods is going to do.
- 1:54:38He's fast, right back to the mouth, same time base.
- 1:54:41Throw the ball. He's off.
- 1:54:44Nobody was at third base covering as Sotterholm was coming in towards the front.
- 1:54:48And barrios had in his mind to get the runner at third
- 1:54:51because of all his fun and throw hard right back at him.
- 1:54:54When he rolled a throw to third, there was nobody there, but fortunately,
- 1:54:57Vallez held at second base.
- 1:54:59So then barrios recovered it through the first and times.
- 1:55:02He went on to play, went out.
- 1:55:05The hitter wasn't giving himself up. He was running for a base hit.
- 1:55:08That's why the runner was not running.
- 1:55:10And sounding had gone out to the mound just before the pitch
- 1:55:13and said something to barrios to be alive or something.
- 1:55:15It hadn't helped him.
- 1:55:17I'll bid you holler at him.
- 1:55:19I think we're going to have a punch ever here.
- 1:55:22Al Woods, a left handed batter, is going to bat for Steve Bowling.
- 1:55:27Al Woods, no relation to Gary Woods.
- 1:55:34A left hand hitter coming out.
- 1:55:40Al Woods from Oakland, California.
- 1:55:47He was acquired from Minnesota in the expansion graph.
- 1:55:50It was like an arms race.
- 1:55:52At the Come in 284 last year.
- 1:55:55He's only 23 years old, left hand batter.
- 1:55:58Al Woods.
- 1:56:08There's barrios getting ready.
- 1:56:11Stretch at the mouth of the pitch.
- 1:56:13All right, fast ball baller.
- 1:56:16Ball, those strikes.
- 1:56:18Barrios sitting in the role of the early relief man.
- 1:56:24He replaced Ken Brutt before.
- 1:56:27But Barrios strikes.
- 1:56:29Not a single given.
- 1:56:32There's a fast ball for a strike called.
- 1:56:35Albus Woods is the left hand hitter.
- 1:56:41Gary Woods is the right hand batter.
- 1:56:46One out.
- 1:56:47A barrios strike to count.
- 1:56:49The pitch.
- 1:56:51I'm going to hype my foul out of play.
- 1:56:54He's in the hole strike too.
- 1:56:57I can't get over the Gen Field manner in which they go after a foul ball on a stand.
- 1:57:04Very polite, very courteous.
- 1:57:06No piling up.
- 1:57:07Scuffling.
- 1:57:10Unusual.
- 1:57:11They haven't used the ball enough.
- 1:57:13Two strikes at a ball.
- 1:57:19Two strikes at a ball.
- 1:57:21The pitch.
- 1:57:23High pop foul coming back into the stand out of play.
- 1:57:28Two strikes at a ball.
- 1:57:33Five to four in Tabor, Toronto.
- 1:57:36They have a runner in second with one away.
- 1:57:39Two strikes on a ball to count.
- 1:57:42The field was covered by snow when we started today.
- 1:57:48Now the signal.
- 1:57:50The snow has stopped.
- 1:57:54Two strikes at a ball.
- 1:57:56The pitch.
- 1:57:57Run, run, run back.
- 1:57:59Make me out of here.
- 1:58:00It could be.
- 1:58:01Hitters!
- 1:58:02A home run.
- 1:58:06A fast ball right down the middle.
- 1:58:08And Albus Woods hit in a mile.
- 1:58:15And the third home run of the day.
- 1:58:18And the manager, Roy Huntsfield,
- 1:58:21is sure making the right move at the right time.
- 1:58:27It looks to me like Mario's in,
- 1:58:30I just don't seem to put two strikes.
- 1:58:32Get a guy out of the stuff, pitch, or he can hang those pitches.
- 1:58:36I'm a big lead now,
- 1:58:39but sure that every inning I get is a white rock.
- 1:58:43But those who worried about the white rock pitching,
- 1:58:48this game,
- 1:58:50it's only his sixth home run to the Comalette.
- 1:58:55Yeah, only his sixth home run to the Minor League.
- 1:58:58It needs to go last three years.
- 1:59:00With the ball back down by Satterholm,
- 1:59:01he throws the first one in the up.
- 1:59:03Garcia hit the hot smash.
- 1:59:05Satterholm will knock the down recovery to throw him out.
- 1:59:08The Pinchin are coming off the bench.
- 1:59:11And the fellow who, in each of the last two years of the Minor League,
- 1:59:15hit a total of six home runs.
- 1:59:19Very young and with a game and a game.
- 1:59:22He'll save the case two out of three today.
- 1:59:26Seven to four at Tavon, Toronto.
- 1:59:35Out of signal, Jim.
- 1:59:37Into the wind of the pitch here it is.
- 1:59:39This is Bruce.
- 1:59:41One strike and nothing.
- 1:59:45Yeah, the white-sox theory of making a reliever out of balleos,
- 1:59:50he throws everything at the same speed.
- 1:59:54And until he learns something that will blow the ball off the slide,
- 2:00:00he can blow the fastball by him maybe for one time around,
- 2:00:04but after that he's in trouble.
- 2:00:06It's awfully hard, as I say, Harry, many times,
- 2:00:09you can't learn it in the big.
- 2:00:11You break people's hearts.
- 2:00:13Two strikes and nothing.
- 2:00:15Fastball, no one outside.
- 2:00:17Toronto scored five off reps, two already off balleos.
- 2:00:26Two strikes and a ball to pitch.
- 2:00:28In five, both of them die.
- 2:00:33Dave McKay, switch hitter.
- 2:00:41Batting left hand of the game for the O.
- 2:00:43Two to pitch for the ball.
- 2:00:45Ground ball, off with an order.
- 2:00:47He throws the ball for the out, that requires a slide.
- 2:00:50Two to pitch for the out.
- 2:00:52Two hits, four, over the left.
- 2:00:55At the end of the five, Toronto's seven, the white-sox floor.
- 2:01:00I got a story to tell, I'm ashamed to say,
- 2:01:07about a car that drank too much.
- 2:01:09Like a bar off the shelf to wait for pump to pump.
- 2:01:12Goods letting gas in search.
- 2:01:15In a way that car was drinking,
- 2:01:17I should have thought it in wiki-juts.
- 2:01:20But that was before I saw the flag.
- 2:01:23You can't bother talking to champions, folks.
- 2:01:25Fill her up, fill her up, fill her up with champions.
- 2:01:30That's all I feel, broken to pieces, fill her up with champions.
- 2:01:46Better miles than the farmers.
- 2:01:48I'm not one for bragging.
- 2:01:51Six of you, that's what it is. That's cars in an odd way.
- 2:02:00Harry Carrey, back in Toronto,
- 2:02:03outwards in his first major league time at back.
- 2:02:07Hit a home over the manhorns,
- 2:02:09hitting a lot of burials and fastballs a mile over the right field wall.
- 2:02:14A number of players have hit home runs the first time up.
- 2:02:20Bob Bevan, Campy Campaneras,
- 2:02:24two to come to mind.
- 2:02:26There's Scars.
- 2:02:29The Cardinals lead to Pirate 6-3 at the end of 6.
- 2:02:32It comes over to Mets 1, nothing at the end of 3.
- 2:02:35The Reds last week, Cleveland 3-0, nothing at the end of 3.
- 2:02:38Texas is Baltimore United, 1-1 at the end of 3.
- 2:02:42Here's Richie Hills, from Leedemann.
- 2:02:44Whiteback's been trouble now.
- 2:02:48Swayling by 3.

- 2:05:40And he was jammed.
- 2:05:42I'm gone.
- 2:05:44We're in the six.

- 2:07:42He's got to use your own power because he really changes things.
- 2:07:4635 years old.
- 2:07:48Jerry Johnson.

- 2:08:04Just sit together and he fouled it back.
- 2:08:08Oh, come on.
- 2:08:10This has been holding because there are three runs behind.
- 2:08:12Why risk running into an out?

- 2:10:22Gamble stops at second.
- 2:10:24And now it's seven to five.
- 2:10:26And still counting.
- 2:10:28Toronto.
- 2:10:30Toronto only has one left handed pitcher
- 2:10:32who plays every day for the dedication.
- 2:10:46Howdy, Carrie, with Jimmy Pearsall.

- 2:10:56Starting to warm up for the
- 2:10:58Toronto Blue Jays.
- 2:11:00And Roy Huntfield comes out to
- 2:11:02stall a little bit.
- 2:11:04Because this will happen in a hurry.
- 2:11:06You can book a bit of chance to get ready.
- 2:11:08You can talk to him with Hartfield.
- 2:11:10He's in the middle of the infield.
- 2:11:12He's warming up in the middle.
- 2:11:14It will take a lot longer than a guy like
- 2:11:16John Boos. He's used to it.
- 2:11:18He's used to it.
- 2:11:20He's out there delaying a little bit right now.
- 2:11:22He wants back off the field now.
- 2:11:24Schatterholm.

- 2:12:08Out of all of the strikes.
- 2:12:10Lemon letting the pitch get evil with the plate
- 2:12:12before he swings. He's got to hit that ball
- 2:12:14more out in front because he's getting good
- 2:12:16cuts for the ball as I am.
- 2:12:18By Johnson off the stretch.
- 2:12:20Gamble is safely the second base.
- 2:12:22The pitch.
- 2:12:24The board says ball three.
- 2:12:26I think it should be ball two.
- 2:12:28The board keeps it getting.
- 2:12:32And that's a temporary board.
- 2:12:34That's rather imperfect.
- 2:12:36Out of the stretch.
- 2:12:38On the boat.
- 2:12:40The pitch.
- 2:12:42Low walk to ball four.

- 2:12:58Jerry Johnson on the hill.
- 2:13:00He's looking for warming up.
- 2:13:02Low downy.

- 2:13:06Okay.
- 2:13:08Downy.
- 2:13:10Gets them all on over.
- 2:13:12He feels going to play back for the double play.
- 2:13:14Here's the pitch.
- 2:13:16Right down with the little fast ball.
- 2:13:18That's a good one.
- 2:13:20He's down with the little fast ball.
- 2:13:24I guess he hasn't seen Jerry Johnson
- 2:13:26before he wanted to look at a pitch.
- 2:13:28Now he's in the hole. One strike and nothing.
- 2:13:30A basic with tires.
- 2:13:32Now the wind up the pitch here it is.
- 2:13:36Curve a little bit outside.
- 2:13:38For the way he throws
- 2:13:40he could hang on.
- 2:13:42And downy could hit it right out of here.
- 2:13:44And downy a high ball here.
- 2:13:46He's pre-shotting that high ball today.
- 2:13:48Down on a strike.
- 2:13:50The wind up the pitch here it is.
- 2:13:52Wheeze and he fouls it back and he really had a rip.

- 2:13:58Had a good pitch to hit man
- 2:14:00and he really walked out.
- 2:14:02It's a foul to back.
- 2:14:04He strikes them all.
- 2:14:06Seven to five in favor of Peranto.
- 2:14:08You have a count from the six.
- 2:14:12Right hand hitter digging in.
- 2:14:14Be ready up there.
- 2:14:16Now the wind up the pitch here it is.
- 2:14:18He didn't mean to swing.
- 2:14:20He fouled it back.
- 2:14:22And I'm glad he touched it because he could have been
- 2:14:24caught out on strikes on that pitch.
- 2:14:26Those strikes on the ball.
- 2:14:28Johnson was gambling
- 2:14:30that he could get the fastball by him.
- 2:14:32He only picked away with these strikes to get you in the hole.
- 2:14:34He'll keep trying to go outside to make it take the bad ball.
- 2:14:38Now Jerry Johnson ready.
- 2:14:40Into the wind up the pitch.
- 2:14:42Here it is.
- 2:14:44Oh, it popped it up on the infield.

- 2:14:50Decay is a perfect...
- 2:14:52Anything with that.
- 2:14:54But here's the round-door.
- 2:14:56Basers loaded two outs.
- 2:14:58Downy pumped up.
- 2:15:00You know when you make $100,000
- 2:15:02you gotta hit in this situation.
- 2:15:04You don't drive this money too many rounds.
- 2:15:06You gotta do it.
- 2:15:08I gotta do it right now.
- 2:15:10He'll go out.
- 2:15:12Here's Gar with the Basers loaded two outs.

- 2:17:08Yes, I mentioned before.
- 2:17:10Friends during the winter, that's what we do.
- 2:17:12That's what we do.
- 2:17:14I really like the taste.
- 2:17:16It turned out to be stroze.
- 2:17:18I didn't know that the stroze would be as fun for this year.
- 2:17:20A real beer drink is like us.
- 2:17:22The taste is the thing.
- 2:17:24And stroze beer has much more, of course,
- 2:17:26like the finest ingredients of the unique.
- 2:17:28Fire brewing.
- 2:17:30But the one real beer lover to another,
- 2:17:32the taste is what brings you back to stroze
- 2:17:34again and again.
- 2:17:36Stroze is my beer now.

- 2:18:30He wasn't so injured.
- 2:18:32He's not to divert himself.
- 2:18:34Maybe it's because he's cold and he's hoops a bit.
- 2:18:36It's not weather.
- 2:18:38It's not winter long.
- 2:18:40He's easy to pick up.
- 2:18:42I wish I'd get somebody else ready.
- 2:18:44Get somebody to try somebody else.
- 2:18:46Don't score, Gary.

- 2:20:05Let's have batter up there.
- 2:20:09That was never as much of an average.
- 2:20:12But as long as you swing that bat, you're dangerous.
- 2:20:15That's just about it.
- 2:20:18There's a pitch going on a high-fly ball.
- 2:20:20Stipping shot.
- 2:20:22Go on left field. And he has it.

- 2:20:40Go ahead. Go ahead.
- 2:20:42He'll drink up here. Why don't they drink it?
- 2:20:44You're purple.
- 2:20:47That's settled for a nice cold bottle of smoke.
- 2:20:49That'll make you warm inside.
- 2:20:51Two-and-a-Rot.
- 2:20:55They stop on holding the fourth.
- 2:20:57And he was banished to return the base into a double play.
- 2:21:00With an unbelievable stop.
- 2:21:03Now the stretch of this.
- 2:21:05One minute. Oh, what a cut he had.
- 2:21:09Boy, I think I'll have to knock the guy like this back a little bit.
- 2:21:12The way he's swinging.
- 2:21:15Oh, he's sticking in his ribs.
- 2:21:17I don't mean to hurt him.
- 2:21:19He's just slow and dead.
- 2:21:21And certainly he is just rushing at that ball.
- 2:21:26Two-and-a-Rot.
- 2:21:28Now Barrios gets that.
- 2:21:30The pitch.
- 2:21:32Slider outside.
- 2:21:34Right side's got to stop him.
- 2:21:36They scored in every inning.
- 2:21:40Subversive.
- 2:21:42And this one's not over. Two-and-a-Rot.
- 2:21:45Man in scoring position.
- 2:21:47Seven to five.
- 2:21:51The stretch of the pitch.
- 2:21:53One minute he followed back.
- 2:21:55I think he tried to change up on him.
- 2:21:57It didn't seem to fool.
- 2:21:59All to know he had a good cut at it.
- 2:22:06Two strikes in a ball.
- 2:22:10Right-hand hitter digging in.
- 2:22:12Barrios is ready.
- 2:22:14The pitch.
- 2:22:16Low outside.
- 2:22:18Not even without two balls. Two strikes.
- 2:22:24Revers six.
- 2:22:26On a cold snowy day in Toronto.
- 2:22:32Right-hand batter waits.
- 2:22:38Not a signal.
- 2:22:40Barrios.
- 2:22:42At the belt.
- 2:22:44The pitch.
- 2:22:46Half-swingly followed back.
- 2:22:50Doug Alves, who used to be with the Texas Rangers.
- 2:22:56They have those kind of reports on this fella in Texas.
- 2:22:58A testie hitter with good power.
- 2:23:00Do you make a mistake?
- 2:23:02I think we've made a couple of mistakes.
- 2:23:04Two balls. Two strikes.
- 2:23:06Gonna come a lot of stools.
- 2:23:10Now to sign.
- 2:23:12Barrios pitches.
- 2:23:14That is outside.
- 2:23:16Ball free.
- 2:23:18Three balls. Two strikes.
- 2:23:22Boy, if they're gonna get it over, have something on it.
- 2:23:26Get first-date open, too.
- 2:23:28Three balls. Two strikes.
- 2:23:30All takes in.
- 2:23:38Barrios ready.
- 2:23:40All the big guys. The pitch.
- 2:23:42A little tap.
- 2:23:44It's gonna go. They're ready.
- 2:23:46Roll, roll, roll, roll, ball.
- 2:23:48He tapped them all.
- 2:23:50Had a fixed bear. He had a big hit.
- 2:23:52But they let it all.
- 2:23:54And fortunately in one ball,
- 2:23:56they say fortunately depending on what happens on the fixed fence.
- 2:24:00That's right.
- 2:24:02Because this guy is dangerous up there.
- 2:24:08I don't, I wouldn't mind if he threw balls for it right here.
- 2:24:12Barrios and Hamilton really working,
- 2:24:14they're working fast on it, trying to get ready.
- 2:24:16Because it's cold.
- 2:24:18Hamilton tells me he throws about 30 pitches.
- 2:24:22Three balls. Two strikes.
- 2:24:26And the bottom of the sixth
- 2:24:28will try and throw leaving the white side
- 2:24:30seven to five.
- 2:24:32Now the sign.
- 2:24:38Barrios is ready.
- 2:24:40The bench.
- 2:24:42Ball four.
- 2:24:46And here's Otto Ballers now.
- 2:24:48He's thinking about Barrios in the fifth.
- 2:24:54That is the first and second two goons.
- 2:25:00You gotta see every day,
- 2:25:02if you're gonna rock all the time.
- 2:25:10Well, let's see.
- 2:25:12Rebels a lot of them.
- 2:25:14They're trying to get the first five runs.
- 2:25:16Barrios with the other two.
- 2:25:20So here's Valder.
- 2:25:22Valder.
- 2:25:28Barrios
- 2:25:30hardly has the patience of both of all.
- 2:25:32They could effectively be called on the ball.
- 2:25:34A lot of pitchers are doing it nowadays
- 2:25:36and getting away with it.
- 2:25:38Once they stop it, everybody will stop.
- 2:25:40But he on is really bad at it.
- 2:25:42I've run as a first and second.
- 2:25:44Barrios getting ready.
- 2:25:48The bench.
- 2:25:50In five ball one.
- 2:25:54Gary Woods.
- 2:25:56On deck.
- 2:25:58I hope he doesn't come up for two hours.
- 2:26:02Right hand hit awaiting.
- 2:26:08Serona lead at second base.
- 2:26:10Out of the bench.
- 2:26:12Good fastball.
- 2:26:14A strike call.
- 2:26:16Yeah, something's up on us.
- 2:26:24Our ball under strike.
- 2:26:32If we're gonna stay in this game, he's gonna get this guy out.
- 2:26:34It's one of those situations.
- 2:26:36Now the delivery.
- 2:26:38Low outside ball two.
- 2:26:40Two balls and a strike.
- 2:26:44Barrios came into the ball game in the fourth.
- 2:26:48This is third inning in relief.
- 2:26:52This is the all three outs of the fourth inning.
- 2:26:56In the bottom of the sixth.
- 2:27:00The bench.
- 2:27:02Ball.
- 2:27:04Three balls and a strike.
- 2:27:06Larry McGraw is down on the ball pass.
- 2:27:12He might get off to move around three and one like this.
- 2:27:18Spacious outfield.
- 2:27:24Out of the side.
- 2:27:28The bench.
- 2:27:30Whoa!
- 2:27:32That brings up Gary Woods.
- 2:27:34There's another score for you.
- 2:27:36At the end of seven, Candle City six to strike four.
- 2:27:40At the end of three, the Yankees won no one key nothing.
- 2:27:42At the end of four, Texas won bottom all one.
- 2:27:46At the end of four, the Red Sox three Cleveland nothing.
- 2:27:50At the end of six, St. Louis six, Pittsburgh three.
- 2:27:52At the end of three, the Cubs won the Mets one.
- 2:27:54So the Masons are loaded two outs.
- 2:28:00That's the third walk given up by Barrios.
- 2:28:02He's got to be there.
- 2:28:04He's got to be one.
- 2:28:06You get this man out, you're still in the ball game.
- 2:28:08If he gets a hip, you're just about out of the ball game.
- 2:28:12Masons jam two outs.
- 2:28:14Gary Woods.
- 2:28:16Gary Woods.
- 2:28:18Gary Woods.
- 2:28:20Gary Woods.
- 2:28:22Gary Woods.
- 2:28:24The pitch swings and he files it back twice.
- 2:28:26He has done it once.
- 2:28:28He beat it out.
- 2:28:38A lot of helicopters around.
- 2:28:42Two more outs.
- 2:28:44Right hand hitters digging in. Masons loaded.
- 2:28:46Barrios has got to get this fella.
- 2:28:48Gary Woods.
- 2:28:50Right hand hitters. The pitch.
- 2:28:52Fastball inside just barely missed with it.
- 2:29:00Woods under the Oakland organization.
- 2:29:02It's three oh eight for two time last year.
- 2:29:04A ball and a strike.
- 2:29:10Now Barrios is ready.
- 2:29:12The pitch.
- 2:29:14Oh he missed. Ball two.
- 2:29:16He's struggling.
- 2:29:20I have fear of fastball pitcher against this guy.
- 2:29:22Gary Woods.
- 2:29:26They got Larry McGraw and Dave Hamilton in the bullpen.
- 2:29:32My fingers a little too early for the McGraw.
- 2:29:36Two balls and a strike.
- 2:29:38Masons hit and it'll be too late.
- 2:29:40They're not going to say things.
- 2:29:42The pitch.
- 2:29:44Long drive and a set of B11 waiting.
- 2:29:46Nice to catch.
- 2:29:48They're tired to try.
- 2:29:50That ball was just right on the bus.
- 2:29:52No runs. One hit.
- 2:29:54No errors and three men left.
- 2:29:56This is Harry Carey.
- 2:29:58He's going to move back over to the television boat.
- 2:30:00Jimmy Perisdahl and Lauren will be with you.
- 2:30:02The score here at the end of sixth
- 2:30:04remains Toronto seven.
- 2:30:06The White Sox five.
- 2:30:08Perisdahl and Harry Carey and Lauren Brown.
- 2:30:10Back in Geronimo.
- 2:30:12With the score seven to five.
- 2:30:14The Vuce is leading in a top of the seven.
- 2:30:16The White Sox with a chance
- 2:30:18to try to score and to make some quoted.
- 2:30:20They shot right back at the pitcher.
- 2:30:22He didn't even know he had any footage left on it.
- 2:30:24Here it was.
- 2:30:26And the White Sox were out of the inning.
- 2:30:28Right now they'll throw an Allen Bannister
- 2:30:30over the place.
- 2:30:32He's got one hit.
- 2:30:34He's over to run in the second inning.
- 2:30:36He's one for four.
- 2:30:38Bannister playing his sensational shortstop
- 2:30:40making two great plays.
- 2:30:42Turning one into a double play to get us out of a jam.
- 2:30:44Jerry Johnson delivers.
- 2:30:46Fastball strike one.
- 2:30:48McKay of third.
- 2:30:50Mason playing short at the place of Torrey.
- 2:30:52Wundahl, the young man with two over
- 2:30:54on his playing first base.
- 2:30:56One strike pitch.
- 2:30:58Oh, Wundahl and one strike.
- 2:31:00Top of the seventh inning.
- 2:31:02White Sox with 13 hits.
- 2:31:04They've left 15 minutes on base.
- 2:31:06Ever made an error.
- 2:31:08The one-to-one delivery.
- 2:31:10Breaking Ball.
- 2:31:12D-Ripe.
- 2:31:14And a real slow curveball like a blooper pitch.
- 2:31:16Johnson, a better.
- 2:31:18He's been around a long time.
- 2:31:20Playing the big leagues for about nine years
- 2:31:22before he went back to the Miders.
- 2:31:24Came up to San Diego towards the end of the season.
- 2:31:26The one-two pitch.
- 2:31:28Breaking Ball outside.
- 2:31:30Coaching at third base. Bobby Canna.
- 2:31:32White Sox are warning to start something right now
- 2:31:34to get back in his ballgame.
- 2:31:36They scored two in the first and two in the second.
- 2:31:38One in the sixth.
- 2:31:40They need two to tie it.
- 2:31:42Two-two pitch. One out of fly ball center field.
- 2:31:44Center field who is back.
- 2:31:46These fans are now taking in his track.
- 2:31:48The outfield and the infield now is right up somewhat.
- 2:31:52They've had a lot of snow here today.
- 2:31:54For a baseball game.
- 2:31:56And prior to game time
- 2:31:58they were having quite a bit of difficulty
- 2:32:00getting the infields all around
- 2:32:02both late and first days right out.
- 2:32:04The first things we have in this season
- 2:32:06the quarter's done then.
- 2:32:08The quarter's over four.
- 2:32:10Got a great spring.
- 2:32:12And the first pitch is outside ball one.
- 2:32:14Seventh and eighth.
- 2:32:16I'm decked.
- 2:32:18Richie's in.
- 2:32:20Another pitch going on.
- 2:32:22A foul off to the left side.
- 2:32:24A line driving to the stands.
- 2:32:26The stands here are not covered along the first base line
- 2:32:28and third base line.
- 2:32:30But out in left field
- 2:32:32we're at one time or something
- 2:32:34because it certainly looks like
- 2:32:36a horse race stable out here.
- 2:32:38The pitch is going on.
- 2:32:40I'm always decked it. Two balls and one strike.
- 2:32:42George Orta.
- 2:32:44Looking for his first-page affinity here.
- 2:32:46I see it.
- 2:32:48Deep at second base.
- 2:32:50Outside.
- 2:32:52Three balls and one strike.
- 2:32:54You can play real deep
- 2:32:56on this artificial turf because the ball will scoop.
- 2:32:58Most
- 2:33:00most insurers would have great
- 2:33:02arm play off of each other.
- 2:33:04Now, off moves back a few steps
- 2:33:06to first base. The three-one pitch
- 2:33:08from Johnson. Ball four. It orders on now with one
- 2:33:10out and based on ball.
- 2:33:12Richie's
- 2:33:14disc. Who had a home run
- 2:33:16first time at that in the American League.
- 2:33:18He has decked the center field over the
- 2:33:20quarter for the line over both sides.
- 2:33:22Then he doubled the line drive
- 2:33:24off the left field wall for an RBI.
- 2:33:26Shrugged out in the fourth
- 2:33:28and they got a base hit in the second quarter run.
- 2:33:30Six.
- 2:33:32Down at the end of the bat.
- 2:33:34Johnson at the stretch.
- 2:33:36Had to grab all of the clean third.
- 2:33:38Left ball and hit two good books. Got right in the hole
- 2:33:40for a base hit.
- 2:33:42So this, having four hits to start things off
- 2:33:44for him in the American League.
- 2:33:50Jim Spencer.
- 2:33:52Spencer's single in the first.
- 2:33:54Back to the pitchers.
- 2:33:56Singles the center field
- 2:33:58in the fourth and walks.
- 2:34:00So he's two for three.
- 2:34:02He's got a long drive followed his last time up with
- 2:34:04a couple of minutes on base.
- 2:34:06Down the right field line.
- 2:34:10He's handled and warming up.
- 2:34:12Left handers. The growers
- 2:34:14sit down now.
- 2:34:16Number three at first base.
- 2:34:18Jim Spencer.
- 2:34:20That's the shot out behind the plate.
- 2:34:22He rolled a young catcher having a good day.
- 2:34:24Got a little bit off his way.
- 2:34:26A couple of base hits.
- 2:34:28Jerry Johnson giving up a run in two innings
- 2:34:30and four hits.
- 2:34:32Runners with their lead.
- 2:34:34Johnson looks back at second base.
- 2:34:36He fires a fastball outside.
- 2:34:38As Brookovage warms up for the bullpen.
- 2:34:42Spencer steps out.
- 2:34:46On deck. Oscar Gamble.
- 2:34:48Johnson takes off one sign.
- 2:34:50The right hander is six feet one.
- 2:34:52He gets the belt, now he delivers.
- 2:34:54That ball, followed off, now it's going back in.
- 2:34:56First baseman is going to take it.
- 2:34:58The catcher's coming out.
- 2:34:59First baseman, nobody takes it.
- 2:35:01The ball is blown back by the dugout.
- 2:35:04The catcher was going over after it.
- 2:35:06The first baseman was coming in, and all of a sudden, nobody took it.
- 2:35:09It's a play where the first baseman is going to call the catcher off if he can get it.
- 2:35:12He was playing so deep, he wasn't able to get close to it.
- 2:35:15So a break for Jim Spencer, and a ball that should have been caught.
- 2:35:18And the count goes to one and one.
- 2:35:20There's one out, we're going to top it at seven, the score is seven to five, blue jays are winning.
- 2:35:24They scored in every inning except the sixth inning.
- 2:35:27They've got twelve hits, made a couple errors.
- 2:35:33Orta, down a second, he's on a no-walk.
- 2:35:35Johnson shakes off the sign, looks back at Orta.
- 2:35:38To the breaking ball, hit, back to the pitcher.
- 2:35:40He's up with it, and fires over to first base and gets it.
- 2:35:43And Spencer, pulled on a breaking ball, hits it off the end of the bat.
- 2:35:46Johnson off the mound, picks up and fires the first, both runners move up.
- 2:35:54Onker, Campbell.
- 2:35:58And an RBI the last time, I'll be gentle to you.
- 2:36:01He walked the first time up, struck out in the third, walked in the fourth.
- 2:36:04He's one for two now with an RBI.
- 2:36:07Campbell with great power, hit 17 home runs last year for the Yankees.
- 2:36:13They hit right now, the tightest ball came up.
- 2:36:15Garcia really deep at second base.
- 2:36:17You'll never see a second base more any deeper.
- 2:36:20There's a pitch for it on an off-to-left side.
- 2:36:22Overcomes the king, overcomes the shortstop.
- 2:36:25The cage over, takes it to the top of the three.
- 2:36:27A beautiful catch by the king.
- 2:36:30And a White Sox goes for it.
- 2:36:33And the score after six and a half innings of play,
- 2:36:36the Blue J-7, the White Sox five.
- 2:36:38And the last rich, this is WMAQ Chicago.
- 2:36:41Jimmy Scherzahl with Harry Carey, Lauren Brown,
- 2:36:45and with a bottom of seventh and eight.
- 2:36:47The White Sox lost the chance to tie things up.
- 2:36:50When it was mid-on second and third,
- 2:36:54Oscar Campbell popped up in fall territory,
- 2:36:57a nice catch by McCann in third baseman.
- 2:37:00And Johnson, not throwing too hard for that ball club,
- 2:37:03certainly getting away with murder.
- 2:37:05If we can hold him like that, there's no doubt in my mind we could catch him
- 2:37:08because he can't fool it, hit it that much.
- 2:37:11Steve Hamilton now is unreleased.
- 2:37:14He's on the barrio.
- 2:37:16I was the one who was on the right field.
- 2:37:18Al Wood. Al Wood.
- 2:37:20Whitefielders.
- 2:37:22He had a home run.
- 2:37:24Been hitting.
- 2:37:26Throwing a run.
- 2:37:30Last jury played with Tacoma.
- 2:37:32Hamilton takes his time and fires a passball right down the middle, strike one.
- 2:37:37Outfield, around towards right, big hole in the center field.
- 2:37:40Sotterham off the back of third.
- 2:37:42Bannister playing a great shortstop play straight away.
- 2:37:45The one strike delivery.
- 2:37:47Side arm, Kerbal outside ball one.
- 2:37:49One ball in the strike.
- 2:37:51Nobody out, bottom of seventh.
- 2:37:53Blue Jays leading seven to five.
- 2:37:55Bottom of about 35,000 on hand.
- 2:37:57There's another breaking ball misses.
- 2:37:59As Hamilton goes, he's breaking stuff to last two pitches.
- 2:38:03Kerkin at third base.
- 2:38:07Blue Jays, Jackie Moore.
- 2:38:09At first base, Harry Warner.
- 2:38:11The two-one pitch.
- 2:38:13That's a ball, a call, a strike.
- 2:38:15It's the outside corner and Wood doesn't like it.
- 2:38:17Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:38:19Lemon straight away in the center.
- 2:38:21Lemon having a little difficulty playing.
- 2:38:23He's got a field pasture out there.
- 2:38:25They have overcast and snow and bad background.
- 2:38:29As the pitch is going on, he's off to the left side.
- 2:38:33It's 330 down the right field line.
- 2:38:35375 to right center.
- 2:38:37400 to Jets center.
- 2:38:39375 to left center.
- 2:38:41Ball seemed to carry pretty good.
- 2:38:43Doug Alders hit a couple of home runs.
- 2:38:45Wood hit one.
- 2:38:47And so is Richie Hitt.
- 2:38:49There's a fast ball. Just misses.
- 2:38:51The count goes full to three and two.
- 2:38:53Three balls and two strikes.
- 2:38:55And Hamilton plays the second corner as Wulkevich is warming up in the blowpen.
- 2:39:01For Gerrano.
- 2:39:03The three-two pitch.
- 2:39:05See right 3-8.
- 2:39:07So Hamilton strikes out the first guy he faced.
- 2:39:11And that'll bring up a guy who's been hitting pretty well.
- 2:39:13Pedro Garcia.
- 2:39:15Garcia with two hits and an RBI.
- 2:39:17The first and the eighth is second.
- 2:39:19Single and the second.
- 2:39:21Double and the eighth when Lemon couldn't see the ball
- 2:39:23and let it fall and it bounced high over his head.
- 2:39:25And Richie Hitt's had a feel of it.
- 2:39:27The one pitch.
- 2:39:29Point on line drive.
- 2:39:31In the left center field.
- 2:39:33Foul over. Fix it up.
- 2:39:35Three base hits for Pedro Garcia.
- 2:39:37Last year couldn't get three hits in a month.
- 2:39:39He was with Milwaukee in Detroit.
- 2:39:41It's 2-17 and 1-98.
- 2:39:43It's both ball clumps.
- 2:39:45Dave McKay.
- 2:39:47Dave McKay. Young and favorite here.
- 2:39:49This young man is the best.
- 2:39:51Young and favorite here.
- 2:39:53This young man is from Canada.
- 2:39:55He's come over from the Minnesota Twins.
- 2:39:59He played at Tacoma last year.
- 2:40:01Hit some 68.
- 2:40:03Got a couple of base hits.
- 2:40:05Two for three.
- 2:40:07At the belt now with Hamilton.
- 2:40:09Looks over at the runner. Garcia.
- 2:40:11Whatever. Ground ball off court short.
- 2:40:13Fanners are up with the fires over the order.
- 2:40:15Order can't get it out of his glove.
- 2:40:17Kind of a slow roll off court short.
- 2:40:19The field is perfectly flipped over.
- 2:40:21But in order not to get out of his glove,
- 2:40:23the double play wasn't completed.
- 2:40:25So it's the first fourth play.
- 2:40:27Six to four.
- 2:40:29Number nine.
- 2:40:31Rick Carone.
- 2:40:33Rick Carone.
- 2:40:35Got a couple of base hits.
- 2:40:37The double and the singles.
- 2:40:39Spring training hit 45.
- 2:40:41But he's hitting about 800 against us right now.
- 2:40:43Hamilton shakes off his side from down here.
- 2:40:45He looks over at first.
- 2:40:47Left hander delivers.
- 2:40:49Ground ball off court short.
- 2:40:51Over goes Sanero.
- 2:40:53Fires over to second base for the outs.
- 2:40:55So, Toronto.
- 2:40:57We finally get about easy.
- 2:40:59And they don't score.
- 2:41:01At the end of 17's of play,
- 2:41:03it's a Toronto Blue J7.
- 2:41:05The White Sox 5.
- 2:41:07I've got it.
- 2:41:09My favorite Twins.
- 2:41:11Topless up.
- 2:41:13I get everybody to warm round
- 2:41:15back at exhibition stadium in Toronto.
- 2:41:17And people to bench.
- 2:41:19A former White Sox hurler
- 2:41:21is pitching for Toronto
- 2:41:23and you hear on the 8th in him.
- 2:41:25Jerry Johnson went 2 in the 3rd innings
- 2:41:27and allowed one run on three hits.
- 2:41:29He walked two and he struck out one.
- 2:41:31The double White Sox
- 2:41:33will have an opportunity now.
- 2:41:35They work against their former teammate.
- 2:41:39They'll have the bottom half of the order up.
- 2:41:41Number seven, eight and nine hitters.
- 2:41:43Sotterholm, Lehmann and Downing.
- 2:41:45So they are assured of getting the top of the order up.
- 2:41:51No later.
- 2:41:53Then the ninth inning.
- 2:41:55All of these.
- 2:41:57The Sox is great.
- 2:41:59It's 16 men today.
- 2:42:01Got to get some timely hits with men on base.
- 2:42:03That's what Toronto has done.
- 2:42:05They've clubbed three homers.
- 2:42:07Two of them with a man on.
- 2:42:09Counting for five of their seven runs.
- 2:42:11A right hander and a left hander
- 2:42:13are up in the Toronto bullpen.
- 2:42:15As Eric Sotterholm leads it off.
- 2:42:17First picked by Vuka that's a fast ball for his flight.
- 2:42:19Sotterholm is
- 2:42:21two for four today.
- 2:42:23A pair of singles and an RBI.
- 2:42:25Vuka in the lineup delivers.
- 2:42:27Down low at all.
- 2:42:29White Sox lost two players
- 2:42:31in that expansion draft
- 2:42:33that has really sad to see go.
- 2:42:35Bilstein who won two for four
- 2:42:37for Seattle last night
- 2:42:39and he's got a lot of doubles in this fellow.
- 2:42:41Sotterholm is swinging them in.
- 2:42:43Vuka
- 2:42:45at an ERA of
- 2:42:473.67 in spring training.
- 2:42:4919 and two third innings.
- 2:42:51He was 0 and 2 in the spring.
- 2:42:53Sotterholm
- 2:42:55swings them in because he stuck them out with a breaking ball
- 2:42:57on the outside corner.
- 2:43:03So there's one out.
- 2:43:05And the batter is
- 2:43:07Chef Lemon.
- 2:43:09He is grounded out.
- 2:43:11Struck out twice in one.
- 2:43:13A fast ball low.
- 2:43:17We're in the eighth inning.
- 2:43:19It's getting late in Toronto.
- 2:43:21And not any warmer.
- 2:43:23Vukavich ready. Here's the pitch called.
- 2:43:25Even to count up at one and one.
- 2:43:27I knew the minute
- 2:43:29Vukavich was up in the bullpen
- 2:43:31and it was him even though it's a little distance away here.
- 2:43:33Here's a pitch inside almost hit it.
- 2:43:35Because Vukavich
- 2:43:37works in a hurry.
- 2:43:39He gets that ball and he wants to come right back at you.
- 2:43:41Doesn't give you a chance.
- 2:43:43Just set up Lemon, stayed out of the box for a bit now
- 2:43:45to slow him down. Here's the 2-1 delivery.
- 2:43:47Called Spike
- 2:43:49in the outside corner 2 and 2.
- 2:43:53Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:43:57Here's the 2-2 pitch.
- 2:43:59Swing and a bouncer found.
- 2:44:01He's got to be cut off of the coaches blocks at third.
- 2:44:03While you really got to admire these Canadians
- 2:44:05they have stuck it out most of the way.
- 2:44:07I'd say maybe now they're about 20,000 left.
- 2:44:09Some just left
- 2:44:11a bit ago.
- 2:44:13But I'm through the fifth inning.
- 2:44:17Everybody was here that
- 2:44:19come originally it looked like. Here's a swing and a foul.
- 2:44:21He really fooled him.
- 2:44:23And Lemon just got a piece of it.
- 2:44:25They never have given him the attendance, have they Danny?
- 2:44:27I haven't heard any given.
- 2:44:3144,000
- 2:44:33there was a sellout before the game.
- 2:44:35Times the city beat the Detroit Tigers
- 2:44:377-4 today.
- 2:44:39Here's the 2-2 pitch.
- 2:44:41Pops it foul right back to the screen.
- 2:44:43Austin leads Cleveland
- 2:44:453-1 in the eighth inning.
- 2:44:47Texas and Baltimore tied up 1-1 in the seventh.
- 2:44:49St. Louis leading Pittsburgh
- 2:44:516-1 at the end of six innings of play.
- 2:44:57Still don't know how the
- 2:44:59there's a spin on this he struck him out.
- 2:45:01Well you wonder why I say
- 2:45:03I was sorry to see Brookovic go.
- 2:45:05There's two good reasons right there.
- 2:45:07He has looked better than anybody who has pitched today.
- 2:45:09Martin's the only one
- 2:45:11throwing the ball hard all day.
- 2:45:13Well I'll tell you what
- 2:45:15he's got a tiger in his tank.
- 2:45:17He comes out there ready to get you.
- 2:45:19He is really aggressive on that mound.
- 2:45:21And the batter is Brian Downey.
- 2:45:23Downey cuts the fastball first right.
- 2:45:25All right.
- 2:45:27All right.
- 2:45:29All right.
- 2:45:31All right.
- 2:45:33All right.
- 2:45:35All right.
- 2:45:37All right.
- 2:45:39All right.
- 2:45:41All right.
- 2:45:43All right.
- 2:45:45All right.
- 2:45:47Here's the two to strike.
- 2:45:49Pitch up high and all.
- 2:45:51Here's the two strike pitch up high and all.
- 2:45:54Here's the two strike pitch up high and all.
- 2:46:00One ball two strikes right
- 2:46:01handed in the lineup.
- 2:46:03Here's the pitch up high and all two and two.
- 2:46:03Just outside Johnstown.
- 2:46:05He北ovic is the third pitcher employed
- 2:46:07by Toronto
- 2:46:11Here's the two two pitch, low.
- 2:46:13Low above Onnissavy field
- 2:46:15The 2-2 pitch, low ball.
- 2:46:19So this is the first time he's had a full count on anybody. Three balls and two strikes.
- 2:46:27Right hander ready. The 3-2 pitch, all four he walked in. Bukovic comes off the mound. He thought he had caught the corner in the knees.
- 2:46:34So now the tying run comes up to the former Ralph Gar. Ralph, however, goes back to the dugout. He's been out there. I don't know if he went back just to get his foul.
- 2:46:46Let's tell you the last time Ralph was up, he hit a shot, but the pitcher didn't realize he had.
- 2:46:52Otherwise, this ball game would not be in favor of Toronto by two.
- 2:46:58So Ralph went back, wipes the bat off, and now comes out.
- 2:47:01And that was the only time that Ralph was not on base. He's walked, he's gotten out of there, he's got two hits.
- 2:47:11Then he is grounded out. Actually, not a grounded out. He is lying right to the pitcher.
- 2:47:16Here's the pitch. Here's a swing and a foul.
- 2:47:18Round two for four. White Sox had out-hits the Blue Jays 14 and 13. I think that's the biggest impress me is the fact they've got 13 hits.
- 2:47:35And they have really way laid the ball today. Two home runs by dugouts, a pitch home run by Al Woods.
- 2:47:41His first major league time at that. Here's the one strike pitch. Well, that's what it is.
- 2:47:49Boy, he took something off of Adam Gah. I was hit by him about ten feet in front of that pitch.
- 2:47:54Two strikes to guard. Bukovitch taking his time now. Up with the glove, down to the waist. Here's the pitch.
- 2:48:13Here's a swing and a drive in the left field. It's going to drop in there for a base hit. Downing will hold in seconds.
- 2:48:17So on a two strike pitch, Gah slices it into left field. And we're going to have a pinch hitter for Alan Bannister.
- 2:48:25Looks like Niles Niam and a left-handed hitter. And that's who it will be.
- 2:48:29So after Bukovitch struck out two men, he walked down him and Gah gets his third hit of the afternoon.
- 2:48:35So the tying runs are on base again. On a white sock, stranded two in the first, two in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth, three in the sixth, and two in the seventh.
- 2:48:49And now have two men on now. Tim Nordbroek loosening up down the right side. He'll come into play shortstop. Niles Niamen.
- 2:49:01Niles Niamen. We'll pinch hit here. This is Niles' first appearance since a year ago. He was in eight games for the white socks.
- 2:49:12Then he had only 133. Then the ones at Des Moines where he gets 282. They've introduced him as Niles Niamen. Which is easy to do.
- 2:49:22Niles NYLS. Elias. No, I was right the first time. NYLS. Here's a pitcher to swing in a grounder right to the first baseman. He's got it. And that's what fires his eyes.
- 2:49:38Niles Niamen went after the first pitch and grounded out to the first baseman. And the white socks strand two more. They have stranded 18 today.
- 2:49:47In the eighth, no runs, one hit, no airs. Ladies and gentlemen, your attention is...
- 2:49:53Two men left on. We go to the bottom of the eighth, Toronto seven, the white socks five.
- 2:49:58That's real money. Please gentlemen, your attention, please. Now play shortstop versus...
- 2:50:08Lauren Brown back in Toronto. Tim Nordbrook has come into play shortstop. The attendance here this afternoon at freezing 32 degrees with snow flurries, 44,649.
- 2:50:234-4-6-4-9. John Scott will lead it off. The number one hitter in the order. He'll be followed by Jim Mason and Doug Halt.
- 2:50:33Dave Hamilton on the mound. Working his second inning, he's allowed no runs. One hit and he is struck out a man. Here's the first pitch to Scott of Swingin' a Fowl.
- 2:50:44Jackie Moore, the third pace coach, goes and gets it. White socks were out in front four to one and they fell behind seven to four.
- 2:50:55And now it's seven to five with one more shot to go in the night. Here's the one strike pitch inside a ball, even with a count up at one and one.
- 2:51:05Well, no baseball tomorrow. But there will be Saturday and Sunday afternoon here on WMAQ Radio. Here's the one one pitch. Good curveball for a strike.
- 2:51:16Danny, what's the latest on the blackhawks? What are they playing next?
- 2:51:19They're playing tonight. Is it going to be on neutral ice or at New York? At New York.
- 2:51:26Left hander ready. Here's the one two pitchers of Swingin' a Long Drive going way back. It is off the wall.
- 2:51:37And going in with a double is John Scott. Well, Gar went way back, got to the edge of the wall and I don't really think he knew where he was at.
- 2:51:48He just reached up his glove and the ball bounced over. It looked like a ball that should have been caught at the wall, but as is, it turns into a double.
- 2:52:07Well, you can hear that blackhawking tonight here on WMAQ.
- 2:52:18Number 10 is there's one shot.
- 2:52:22He's getting nice in the batter. 0 for 1. Left hander ready. Here's the pitch and it's outside the ball.
- 2:52:53One ball and no strikes. Toronto's threatening here in the eighth inning.
- 2:52:59Left hander ready. Here's the pitch. A thought out in front of the bow. Third baseman goes to third. Oh, they missed the pass.
- 2:53:06Hamilton looked like he had a perfect throw to Satterholm and Scott went under it.
- 2:53:13Hamilton and Downing a little upset. Satterholm did not argue a bit, so apparently he missed the pass.
- 2:53:25And at first base, he gets it on a fielder's choice and the batter is dug home. All he is done today is hit two home runs, driven in three runs, walked and hit a scorchy, blind drive that Alan Bannister fortunately turned over for a double play.
- 2:53:50The situation could be worse than it is right now. Hamilton ready. Left hander delivers. Here's the pitch. Low of all.
- 2:54:04Activity in the White Sox bullpen. Laren Legreau, a right hander, fired from the Cardinals, will start loosening up.
- 2:54:11Hamilton in his second inning of relief is in trouble. Brett won three innings. Barrios won three innings.
- 2:54:21Here's the pitch. Here's a swing and a smash of Mason up the middle. One run is in and Mason holds a second.
- 2:54:29Barrios has just driven in his fourth run of the afternoon and it's an eighth to five ball game. Oh, this kid is something.
- 2:54:41It's 300 while he was up with Texas at the end of the season last year after hitting 313 with 25 homers and 83 RBIs at Sacramento. A lot of young talent on this club that had great years in AAA may have not been phased at all by this large gathering here in Toronto
- 2:55:03or the pressures of being the first American League club in Canada. And now Bob Lemon comes out of the White Sox dugout.
- 2:55:14We may have a pitching change here in Toronto. A lot of right handers do up.
- 2:55:20Hamilton in a discussion with Lemon downing Satterholm. White Sox can't afford to allow any more runs here with only one more crack. The Blue Jays, that's coming in the ninth inning.
- 2:55:38Last year the White Sox won their opener. Four to nothing over Kansas City and that's going to be all for Dave Hamilton. So Hamilton pitches one for 3-hitting.
- 2:55:53He's allowed one run on three hits. He didn't walk anybody and he struck out a man. But the runners at first and second are his responsibility and Laren LeGro comes into the Kansas making his first appearance as a White Sox pitcher.
- 2:56:16However he is not unfamiliar to the American League having pitched with the Detroit Tigers. Part of 72-73 and all of 74-75. I'm going over to the Cardinals a year ago.
- 2:56:30So he'll get in his warm up passes here in Toronto as he does. Let's tell you what we've got. In baseball the sicker messed up here in Toronto.
- 2:56:45Detroit defeated Kansas City 7-4. Austin over Cleveland 3-1 at the end of 8. Texas Baltimore in the 7th tied up 1-1. The Cardinals out in Hunnepitzburg 6-1 at the end of 6.
- 2:57:16The only thing that we have on that gun game is 1-1 at the end of 3 against the Mets. I'm sure that's the last player long. But I'll apologize. The sickers are not working in Canada.
- 2:57:30Laren LeGro comes in. He pitched at Paulson the American Association a year ago where he won 6 of lost 10. And he was all in one for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 2:57:46Making his first appearance as a member of the White Sox. 6 kids 6'5, 230 pounds. Born in Phoenix and Arizona.
- 2:57:54Originally the property of the Detroit Tigers. So the first man that he will face will be Otto Vallez. A designated hitter.
- 2:58:07One for three today. And he is also one. Well it's funny here. All the people yelling they want beer. Miss Ball Club is owned by one of the largest, if not largest breweries in Canada.
- 2:58:26LeBats. Laren LeGro is ready. Working out of a stretch in the first pitch. And it goes off to Chief Protector of Brian Downing. And off to the left ball one.
- 2:58:39Lelews is shorting up the funds. Runners in. Runners are at first and second. Nobody out. The Blue Jays have scored in 6 of the 8 innings played today.
- 2:58:48One in the first, one in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one here in the eighth. Right hander delivers. And it's low ball two.
- 2:59:00In the ninth inning the White Sox will have Orta, Zisk and Spencer. That's why that one run here really hurts. Because if you get Orta on you've always got that shot of Zisk pumping one out of here. Try to tie it up.
- 2:59:14But as it is now the Sox are down by three and Toronto Trepene, 2-0 pitch. Fennett, out in front of the plate. Oh, and Spencer and Downing collide. And the base is related.
- 2:59:27Spencer came charging in. And the ball is only about 10 feet down the line towards first. Definitely Brian's ball. Orta had covered first on the play. And the two collide.
- 2:59:40And it'll go. I presume it's got to is an infield hit. And the bases are loaded. Nobody out.
- 2:59:49Wow it really hurts.
- 3:00:19I got it, I got it, it's there.
- 3:00:35I'm on, follow my favorite Queen's coupler.
- 3:00:39And Toronto threatening, 2-0 pitch, got it, up in front of the plate.
- 3:00:50Oh, and Spencer and Downing collide, and the bases are loaded.
- 3:00:55Spencer came charging in, and the ball is only about 10 feet down the line towards first.
- 3:01:01Definitely Brian's ball, Oda had covered first on the plate, and the two collide, and it'll go.
- 3:01:11I presume it's got to be the field hit, and the bases are loaded, nobody else.
- 3:01:18Two Chicago players collide in, throwing the hit, the bases are loaded, nobody else here is Gary Wood.
- 3:01:27One for four on the day, on fly ball into the sixth inning with the bases loaded then for Toronto.
- 3:01:36First pitch to them, ball one.
- 3:01:48And the shot is almost coming out here, and Toronto's trying to break through those dark clouds overhead,
- 3:01:53and the second pitch, and it blows the ball through.
- 3:01:572-0 now, as LeGro has got himself into a real jackpot here, with nobody out of the bases full, the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 3:02:12Into the shortstop, they've got one, they've got two, but a run score, and the Blue Jays are on top 9-5,
- 3:02:20as Jim Mason's done been from third base, and the batter is going to be Al Wood.
- 3:02:27He had a replay, perfect double-play ball, shortstop gets it over the second base, not over LeGro,
- 3:02:34but he could get that down to break up the double-play.
- 3:02:37Now I'll have another few of them.
- 3:02:43Mason's going the ninth Blue Jays run.
- 3:02:51Al Wood, first pitch to Carl Streis.
- 3:02:57All to third base, two away.
- 3:03:05Inside, almost gone away from Abilia Lurk-Ryan-Johnny.
- 3:03:10That's the correct word, Johnny, he is very quick back here, and I can see why he only had that one passball in 1976.
- 3:03:25Light-hatter deal, ball two, two and one.
- 3:03:32Go to your third base, Jackie Moore for Toronto, Harry Warner, go to your first base, good days,
- 3:03:40and Al Wood, right now, hits the foul, into the seat.
- 3:03:47You know what those hands are hollering now, John, we're number one.
- 3:03:51Without beer, and if they can get the White Sox out in the top of the ninth,
- 3:03:55Toronto Blue Jays are going to be in first place.
- 3:03:59They will have a perfect season going for them.
- 3:04:03They won their first three-season games to in Florida against the New York match three to one.
- 3:04:11It takes the foul play, both country in two, to Al Wood.
- 3:04:18Yenna Holmarn is first to pair into the stadium, and they do a leg back in the fifth inning to get the Blue Jays into the lead.
- 3:04:30Well, strikes three out of the net in the inning, a pitch to copy outside corner, a little high.
- 3:04:36But they put the clock two more runs, and till the score at the end of eight,
- 3:04:41this is the Blue Jays nine, the White Sox five.
- 3:04:48Toronto's first century, leading out for the White Sox to the top of the ninth.
- 3:04:52George Horton's second base, all the way to off,
- 3:04:55and he's left to Jim Srector, a new to final half.
- 3:04:58First picture of him is the ball, both ball one.
- 3:05:06Order, he has hit the today.
- 3:05:09Look at this miss with the second pitch.
- 3:05:11The one thing you don't want to do with a four-run lead in the ninth inning is put any man on base with the war.
- 3:05:17The third pitch, that's right inside.
- 3:05:21So it's two and one.
- 3:05:26Look at this, looking quickly again, most of all, ball three.
- 3:05:31Well, here's the fan, perhaps it isn't very warm necessarily, but certainly decorative.
- 3:05:36The first game of Blue Jays, played at Exhibition Stadium.
- 3:05:39Here's the man now with the save in his hands, he took of it.
- 3:05:44Three wins, a three strike out the way, and Toronto's first victory.
- 3:05:48Leading off for the White Sox to the top of the ninth.
- 3:05:50George Horton's second base, all the way to off,
- 3:05:53and he's left to Jim Srector, a new to final half.
- 3:05:56First picture of him is the ball, both ball one.
- 3:06:05Order is hit this today.
- 3:06:07Bobby once took a miss with the second pitch.
- 3:06:10The one thing you don't want to do with a four-run lead in the ninth inning is put any man on base with the war.
- 3:06:16The third pitch, that's right inside.
- 3:06:19So it's two and one.
- 3:06:24Look at this, looking quickly again, most of all, ball three.
- 3:06:29There's the look down of the third base, Coach Bobby cannot pull the signal as to what they're going to do.
- 3:06:36They want him on, he swings it.
- 3:06:39An easy out to off, one away.
- 3:06:45I'm very surprised George Horton swung that three and one pitch, four runs behind in the ninth inning.
- 3:06:51And I kind of think that maybe he should take a picture, see if he can get that base on board.
- 3:06:56Here's the power in the White Sox, that is ordered with the right fielder.
- 3:07:00He hasn't felt four hits, the pair of singles, the two-base hit on a home run in five appearances.
- 3:07:09Wings for first six thousand yards.
- 3:07:16Gerell's got the mask on, he might have had to look right up at his face.
- 3:07:25Here appears to be alright.
- 3:07:29A young man of a plate, Richie Visk, who command all kinds of respects from American Lake Citrus.
- 3:07:34Look at this, Gerell's still playing the missing suspect move.
- 3:07:42I think what made Richie Visk such a good hitter over the last few years, he can hit the all field.
- 3:07:47He's stuck on up.
- 3:07:53The Toronto Blue Days are one out away from their first victory.
- 3:07:58Don, I think we're going to hit quite a roar, I think we can get this next better out.
- 3:08:02These fans are just as great today. They're really pulling for these young Toronto Blue Days.
- 3:08:07The Toronto Glass, hope that Jim's best of the first baseman, he's got a pair of base hits in five at bat.
- 3:08:15Look at this, Barry's drawing a relief of Jerry Johnson who'll get the win.
- 3:08:19First hit, one on, the field, God can't get to it.
- 3:08:24Johnson's passing and special will take two.
- 3:08:30Johnson just put her so away from the third out, but waited too long on the ball.
- 3:08:36I think he should have caught the ball really, Don.
- 3:08:38It looked like he was going to catch it easy and all of a sudden he went down with that glove and maybe we'll see a replay of it.
- 3:08:44He gave off the close to it and hit the other glove.
- 3:08:48Well they charged him with an error.
- 3:08:51The designated hitter with a man on second base, Jim Spencer.
- 3:08:56Look at that, pick it to him, ground ball to the shortstop, up with it, Blue Jason!
- 3:09:01The Toronto Blue Days, the beat of the Toronto White House, 9-5 of the crowd, he's all spammed.
- 3:09:19It's a pretty much happy Blue Day there, the dugout, all congratulating Pete Hogan which did a fine job and probably did the best job of any pitch crowd on that field today.
- 3:09:29Well, God's made a much good jam right down there on the field, applauding the Toronto Blue Day baseball team.
- 3:09:36Well the Blue Days scored 9 runs, got 16 hits, committed three errors, the White House 5 runs, 15 hits and no errors, the Toronto wins a 9-5.
- 3:09:49Gary Johnson gets the win and the Chicago starter, Ken Brad, is starting along.
- 3:09:5844,649 appreciative Blue Jay fans, an exhibition stadium for this opening day victory.
- 3:10:08A reminder once again that the Blue Day is a big hit.
- 3:10:10Well there are stars in this quarter today, a lot of players who made a fine contribution for the Toronto Blue Days.
- 3:10:16I don't think anybody made a better woman than the man who hit two home runs, drug all these with commerce he right now.
- 3:10:22But we'll be talking to him in just a moment as they get organized on the field.
- 3:10:26This is Major League Baseball 77.
- 3:10:30All across Canada, people are joining in on community activities.
- 3:10:35This is the day of the big race, just to go over the road quickly one more time.
- 3:10:39The rider must be covered and the team pushes counting seats four in number.
- 3:10:43Okay, away they go, the annual federation is on.
- 3:11:13Enjoy the best of times and the best of beer.
- 3:11:25The back 50, you can't save beer any better.
- 3:11:34The Toronto Blue Jays are now in the American Baseball League and on a very positive and winning note,
- 3:11:40by beating the Chicago White Sox 9-5.
- 3:11:43Hey, you kept them in there when things looked a little bleak, not only the weather,
- 3:11:46but the way they were playing against the Chicago White Sox and you cracked out those two home runs.
- 3:11:51Nobody looked happier than you did when you came back to the dugout.
- 3:11:54Well I'll tell you Tom, it's a good feeling any time you get to this, much less two home runs.
- 3:11:59I'm just glad that I was fortunate enough to help the team and keep us in the ballgame.
- 3:12:04And I'm just glad that we won the home opener for the Toronto fans here.
- 3:12:08Listen, you were telling us that although you were hitting a few home runs down south in Florida in spring training,
- 3:12:15you were not happy with getting along the line drives you wanted.
- 3:12:20I thought you don't need any line drives, you get them up with this stuff all the time.
- 3:12:23Well Tom, as you know, I'm sure the home runs are going to come really very scarcely.
- 3:12:27They're not going to come that too often.
- 3:12:30When you're not hitting home runs or you're not hitting the long ball,
- 3:12:33you want to be sharp on the ball anyway and hit the line drives.
- 3:12:37In spring training, I started out a few home runs, but the other ball that I was hitting,
- 3:12:41I wasn't really getting good wood on, so I had a little concern over that.
- 3:12:45But as it worked out today, I smiled on the ball and everything worked out alright.
- 3:12:49What was the feeling in the clubhouse like just before you came out?
- 3:12:52Everybody was really up for the game.
- 3:12:55They really wanted to win. It was kind of a silent, quiet atmosphere.
- 3:12:59I think everybody was really getting ready in their own way.
- 3:13:03As you know, there's a lot of people on this team that other major league teams didn't protect.
- 3:13:08I think that everybody has a feeling that they want to show somebody something
- 3:13:13and also that we want to win for Toronto.
- 3:13:15Well, we saw some excitement today.
- 3:13:17Have that any indication of what we can expect in our major league baseball series 77?
- 3:13:22It's coming up over the next summer months and along with the Montreal Expo,
- 3:13:27that's how you're in for a heck of a time.
- 3:13:29I think so too. I think that we're going to go out and play every game just like this.
- 3:13:34We had a lot of enthusiasm and everybody really wants to win.
- 3:13:37Always been here in off-free training is how we're going to lose two-thirds of our games.
- 3:13:42Then they ask, how many of the other 30 do you think you're going to win?
- 3:13:45We don't feel that way.
- 3:13:47We feel that we can go out and win every day that we go out, no matter what team we're playing.
- 3:13:51That's just the way we're going to take them.
- 3:13:53I'm going to give you a medal, a calisthenics up here. If you keep this up, you hit something like 300 homeruns this season.
- 3:14:00I hope it's over in here. That would be great. Thank you very much.
- 3:14:04Thank you, Tom.
- 3:14:05Okay, now let's go back to Don Cheverey and Whitey Farr.
- 3:14:09All right, Tom, and our congratulations.
- 3:14:11We'd like to add to the young man who hit those two homeruns for the throttle blue jays.
- 3:14:17Remarkable win for the team. Adverse weather conditions, Whitey to start the game.
- 3:14:21All behind 4-1. It looked to be maybe a long afternoon, but they put it together in a lot of areas.
- 3:14:26Are you going to see that with a young team like the Toronto Blue Jays?
- 3:14:29They just didn't give up. I tell you, it was an exciting game for me. The pitching was a little shaky on both sides.
- 3:14:35Jerry Johnson and Tiki Smokovic fit very well, but it was the kind of game I liked.
- 3:14:40There was extra base hits and good fielding plays, a few stolen bases, and I think there was four homeruns today in here.
- 3:14:46Yes, three by the Blue Jays, Woods and the court dug all, getting the two back to back to excite this crowd here.
- 3:14:51As a great pitcher yourself, I'd like your analysis on how the Blue Jays pitchers look to you.
- 3:14:57Well, like I said, the starting pitcher, Bill Singer, had a little trouble.
- 3:15:01He couldn't get that keep the ball down. He has to be allowed to be effective.
- 3:15:05Jerry Johnson struggled a few innings with the defined job, and then Bukovic came in and just closed the door on the White Fox.
- 3:15:11And some of the pitchers impressed me.
- 3:15:14They were throwing against the pretty good power, certainly Zisk and Downing, and some of those players,
- 3:15:18and Chicago White Fox, by an up-rout guard, they were throwing against some pretty experienced major league hitting.
- 3:15:23They were, and you mentioned the cold weather all day today, you know, a little snow before the game started.
- 3:15:28And it's a little tough when your hands are cold out there to try and pitch and have good control.
- 3:15:32You might have a lot of speed on the ball, or it might break good, but it's a little tough to have good control in cold weather like this.
- 3:15:39Well, nobody expects the Blue Jays to win the penalty this year, but what has happened so far is remarkable.
- 3:15:45They won their very first exhibition game against the New York Mets.
- 3:15:48They beat the Montreal Expo, the first two times they played their new Canadian arch rivals.
- 3:15:52They beat the Cincinnati Reds, who were missing only one player of Oscar.
- 3:15:55In fact, they set up Johnny Bench to pinch in on that game and key it into a double play,
- 3:15:59and the Blue Jays beat the Reds, the World Champions Nine away.
- 3:16:02So Toronto fans got a lot to get excited about.
- 3:16:04The main thing is, I think, if you watch this team, they're capable of winning, they're also capable of making mistakes, which they will make,
- 3:16:10but I think their best potential is to give wide-open, exciting baseball to the fans.
- 3:16:15I think they're going to do that, and they're going to look at that paper tomorrow and see they're in first place,
- 3:16:19and if they can get off to a fairly good shot, it's just going to build more and more confidence in these young players.
- 3:16:24And I think you're going to have an exciting team here this year.
- 3:16:26They put in 44,600 on a miserable day today, so you can imagine what's going to happen when the sun shines
- 3:16:33and the spring weather finally arrives here in Toronto.
- 3:16:35This team is the potential, I think, if they go well, to perhaps hit as high as 2 million in spectators and 77.
- 3:16:41I think that can be done very easily, John.
- 3:16:44Well, they're off to a great start today on this win over the Chicago White Sox.
- 3:16:48The final score is the Blue Jays 9 and the Chicago White Sox 5.
