Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: If You Want to Be a Part of the Play, You Have to Start By Lacing Up Your Shoes
Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey everybody, Emily Abadi coming to you from my Los
- 0:21Speaker 1: Angeles hotel room. This is the last thing that I'm doing,
- 0:25Speaker 1: getting this five minute Friday squared away before heading to
- 0:29Speaker 1: the airport to come back to Brooklyn, New York after
- 0:33Speaker 1: a while.
- 0:33Speaker 2: What an unbelievable few days.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I came out to Los Angeles to be a part
- 0:38Speaker 1: of Nike's Future fifty for her summit. I will call
- 0:41Speaker 1: it a really unbelievable gathering of inspirational women, members of
- 0:46Speaker 1: the media, athletes, executives, entrepreneurs talking about the past fifty
- 0:51Speaker 1: years of the company and the future fifty.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Where we're going and how.
- 0:55Speaker 1: We can each play I would say an integral part
- 0:59Speaker 1: of that journey that we each have the opportunity to
- 1:01Speaker 1: be a role model for someone else. I was surrounded by,
- 1:06Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, just unbelievable humans, from Joe and Benoit
- 1:10Speaker 1: Samuelson and Lisa Leslie to Chloe Kim. We had an
- 1:14Speaker 1: unbelievable meditation led by a woman named Rebecca Price. Got
- 1:19Speaker 1: to finally connect with Tunday Irl. I mean, seriously, I
- 1:22Speaker 1: was just so in awe of my surroundings. A huge
- 1:27Speaker 1: thank you to Nike for including me in this event
- 1:31Speaker 1: and today's five Minute Friday Surprised to No One is
- 1:34Speaker 1: a reflection that I had from this week of programming. Specifically,
- 1:38Speaker 1: it was something that Lisa Leslie said in a session
- 1:41Speaker 1: on Wednesday, and it was along the lines of if
- 1:45Speaker 1: you want to be a part of the play, then
- 1:47Speaker 1: you have to be willing to lace up your shoes.
- 1:50Speaker 2: This idea that if you.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Don't put yourself out there, then you'll never know if
- 1:55Speaker 1: you want to be a change maker, if you want
- 1:58Speaker 1: to be someone that is going to make a difference,
- 2:01Speaker 1: then you have to be willing to step outside of
- 2:04Speaker 1: your comfort zone and put yourself out there. And I
- 2:07Speaker 1: think so often it's easy, especially with the craziness of
- 2:11Speaker 1: social media, to look at what others are doing and
- 2:15Speaker 1: think like, wow, it's so cool that this person is
- 2:17Speaker 1: doing X or Y without giving yourself a little bit
- 2:21Speaker 1: of credit and being your own hype human, your own
- 2:24Speaker 1: hype woman. You know, there's that saying which is a
- 2:28Speaker 1: little comical, but we all have as many hours in
- 2:32Speaker 1: the day as Beyonce, and for me, I think a
- 2:36Speaker 1: lot about that, like what is it that I.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Want to do in my life?
- 2:40Speaker 1: And am I putting myself in the positions and the
- 2:42Speaker 1: circumstances within my.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Ability to go after that.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And even if you're intimidated or scared or worried like
- 2:51Speaker 1: these are all valid feelings, but letting those feelings take charge.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Letting your fear be the thing that holds you back
- 2:58Speaker 1: from going after your big potential, it doesn't serve you.
- 3:01Speaker 1: So if you want to play in the game, if
- 3:04Speaker 1: you want to have an opportunity to step on the stage,
- 3:09Speaker 1: then you need to lace up your sneakers. It needs
- 3:11Speaker 1: to start with one small action, and that small action
- 3:15Speaker 1: can make a major difference. It's something I'm alling over
- 3:18Speaker 1: here thinking about what sneakers I'm going to grab to
- 3:21Speaker 1: lace up and get myself into some of the conversations
- 3:25Speaker 1: to see to some of the tables that I'm excited
- 3:28Speaker 1: to be a part of going forward.
- 3:31Speaker 2: My prompt for you.
- 3:32Speaker 1: This week, where have you been holding yourself back? What
- 3:35Speaker 1: is something that you want for yourself? A goal that
- 3:38Speaker 1: you have that maybe you've been a little anxious about
- 3:41Speaker 1: when it comes to lacing up and going for it again.
- 3:45Speaker 1: What is a goal that you have on your radar?
- 3:47Speaker 1: How can you lace up and go after your big potential?
- 3:50Speaker 2: And you know what, while you're at it. While you're
- 3:52Speaker 2: thinking about this, I challenge you.
- 3:53Speaker 1: To put your goal into the universe. So maybe it's
- 3:56Speaker 1: on social tag hurdle podcast. Tag me over at Emily
- 3:59Speaker 1: a buddy. Let's type each other up. Let's be each
- 4:03Speaker 1: other's biggest hype men women. You know the gist and
- 4:08Speaker 1: now a listener question.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, this is Greg in Orange County, California. Can
- 4:16Speaker 2: you talk us through some steps that you take to
- 4:18Speaker 2: reset after a bad choice?
- 4:21Speaker 1: Maybe it was a night of.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Drinking, or you develoured those delicious chocolate covered pretzels like
- 4:26Speaker 2: you know, the whole bag. Talk us through how you
- 4:29Speaker 2: move forward mentally and otherwise.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Thanks the rare male hurdler question, Greg, thanks for listening
- 4:37Speaker 1: to the show. I love this question because it is
- 4:40Speaker 1: so easy to get down on yourself for a choice
- 4:43Speaker 1: that may have felt really good in the moment but
- 4:45Speaker 1: didn't make you feel super stellar in the aftermath. Your
- 4:49Speaker 1: example of like eating a whole bag of chocolate covered pretzels, Like,
- 4:52Speaker 1: I'm not going to be the person that says that
- 4:54Speaker 1: that doesn't happen from time to time, but the importance
- 4:57Speaker 1: is that you have grease with yourself after you do
- 5:00Speaker 1: something like that knowing and recognizing how you feel in
- 5:05Speaker 1: the aftermaths, because that feeling, that attentiveness, that agency you
- 5:13Speaker 1: have the opportunity to take is what may prevent you
- 5:17Speaker 1: from making a similar mistake if that's what you feel
- 5:19Speaker 1: like it was the next time. So if you realize
- 5:23Speaker 1: and say to yourself, hey, doing that really didn't make
- 5:25Speaker 1: me feel good, then the next time that you think
- 5:29Speaker 1: about leaning into an entire bag of chocolate covered pretzels
- 5:32Speaker 1: because of something emotional that might be going on or whatever,
- 5:34Speaker 1: or maybe you just wanted to, you might think twice
- 5:39Speaker 1: the next time. But the important takeaway that I want
- 5:43Speaker 1: here and obviously these decisions you know you mentioned a
- 5:47Speaker 1: night of drinking, It can be anything, right. It doesn't
- 5:50Speaker 1: need to be food or diet related at all. It
- 5:52Speaker 1: could be like a conversation that didn't go the right way,
- 5:55Speaker 1: or a business decision that just feels all sorts of wonky.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Like the important thing is that you have grace with
- 6:01Speaker 1: yourself when things don't go as planned or when you
- 6:03Speaker 1: quote unquote mess up, and understanding that each of these moments,
- 6:07Speaker 1: each of these hurdles, has the opportunity to teach you something.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Each of these hurdles can inform how you move forward,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and the idea of having grace with yourself. Life is
- 6:20Speaker 1: hard enough, so you need to come back to the
- 6:23Speaker 1: idea that we talk about from time to time on
- 6:25Speaker 1: the show, that inner dialogue, talking to yourself like you
- 6:27Speaker 1: would a loved one, thinking about how someone next to
- 6:31Speaker 1: you would feel if they heard the way that you're
- 6:34Speaker 1: talking to yourself.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Would you be.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Embarrassed by that? Or is this a place of harmony?
- 6:40Speaker 1: Is this a place of love? Are you giving yourself
- 6:43Speaker 1: the love that you give to other people? So have
- 6:47Speaker 1: some grace with yourself, talk to yourself as kindly as possible,
- 6:52Speaker 1: and recognize that every single second is a chance to
- 6:55Speaker 1: start over, a chance to start fresh and move On's
- 7:00Speaker 1: this week over at Hurdle Podcast at Emily a Body
- 7:03Speaker 1: on the Socials, Another hurdle conquered. Catch you all next time.
