- 0:11Speaker 1: on big screens, big bets, gate Day hits different in Ocean.
- 0:15Speaker 1: To learn more, to visit the oceanac dot com. The
- 0:18Speaker 1: Eagles open for training camp on Tuesday, but maybe the
- 0:21Speaker 1: only story that can push them off what used to
- 0:24Speaker 1: be the backpage. I guess it still is the backpage.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I don't know, I haven't picked up the newspaper in
- 0:30Speaker 1: quite some time would be the signing of Lebron James
- 0:34Speaker 1: to Philadelphia. So with that, for today's football at four,
- 0:38Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan has his ten biggest Philly sports moves of
- 0:43Speaker 1: all time. We'll see where Lebron James fits on that list.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan, I know you're a big Sixers fan, big hoophead.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I am Mike. I wanted to change up because look,
- 0:54Speaker 2: we're gonna talk all Eagles all the time starting Monday.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I can't see what the Phillies are so frustrating. Josh knows.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Josh and I talk a lot. I can't take it.
- 1:03Speaker 2: I'm so frustrated with Philly. But this thing, Mike, I'll
- 1:06Speaker 2: be honest with you. So I'm driving to Stretch Show
- 1:09Speaker 2: and I'm gett. You know, I'm playing tennis tonight, so
- 1:11Speaker 2: I'm gett a little bit limber. And anyway, I see
- 1:14Speaker 2: the sham's Sharani his tweet because I get his known occasions,
- 1:20Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, please don't be fake. Well, first of all,
- 1:23Speaker 2: when I saw I was driving, so I really couldn't
- 1:25Speaker 2: look down, I'm like, all right, it's going to be
- 1:26Speaker 2: in Miami. Come on, it's got to be How could
- 1:29Speaker 2: pat Riley, who doesn't seem to miss on any guy
- 1:31Speaker 2: that he wants, not get him. And when I stopped
- 1:34Speaker 2: the light, I read a very quick limit. I was
- 1:37Speaker 2: kind of like shocked. You know. Then I'm I'm trying
- 1:41Speaker 2: to remember my lifetime, Mike, when like, what what signings
- 1:46Speaker 2: did I live through? And we'll get to Pete Rose.
- 1:49Speaker 2: That was a big one in nineteen eighty the Moses
- 1:52Speaker 2: ballone signing coming over from the Rockets. Oh holy smokes.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I was a little kid. When Doctor J came over
- 1:58Speaker 2: with via the ABA merger, there was kind of complicated.
- 2:02Speaker 2: But in recent times there have been A. J. Brown, Tray,
- 2:07Speaker 2: Sae Kwon, Barkley signing, and others. But this one in
- 2:10Speaker 2: my lifetime, I did live through the Doctor j move,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and that of its time was huge. Mike obviously unbelievable,
- 2:17Speaker 2: super cool as a little kid, but Lebron won Mike
- 2:22Speaker 2: to me, starting off at number one, nothing could rober it.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I heard you and Josh talking. We could debate who's
- 2:29Speaker 2: better Lebron or Michael Jordan, but what Lebron's doing potentially
- 2:36Speaker 2: four rings with four different teams is unheard of that
- 2:39Speaker 2: that would be the big difference obviously.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean listen, I'm a Michael guy over Lebron.
- 2:44Speaker 1: And I was very critical Lebron earlier in his career.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I hated him going to Miami. I didn't like the
- 2:49Speaker 1: way that all went down. I gained a little bit
- 2:51Speaker 1: more respect for him, a lot more respect actually when
- 2:54Speaker 1: he went back to Cleveland, because I just didn't I
- 2:56Speaker 1: thought he kind of took the easy way out of Cleveland,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and then he went there and ended up winning. I
- 3:01Speaker 1: give him a lot of credit for that. The Laker years,
- 3:03Speaker 1: you know, they are what they were. I felt like
- 3:05Speaker 1: they kind of fell flat a little bit. He didn't
- 3:07Speaker 1: feel like this great Laker that other great Lakers felt like.
- 3:12Speaker 1: But that being said, it's undeniable. This is possibly the
- 3:18Speaker 1: biggest sports star of our lifetime. All right, I mean
- 3:24Speaker 1: you can say that if you think it's Tiger or Michael.
- 3:27Speaker 1: He's in that conversation.
- 3:29Speaker 2: All right. Here's how I would rank them. Okay, now
- 3:31Speaker 2: you and I are old enough to remember, you don't.
- 3:33Speaker 2: We have to mind. I was a little kid, aloud, kid,
- 3:36Speaker 2: I was a little I was early teens when Wayne
- 3:39Speaker 2: Gretzky became a superstar. So I would rank it Jordan,
- 3:45Speaker 2: probably Gretzky, Ken Griffy juniors in my top ten of
- 3:49Speaker 2: best athletes I've ever seen. I mean, we forget how
- 3:52Speaker 2: great he was, but Jordan's got to still be one
- 3:56Speaker 2: to me. Now, Kobe, unfortunately, you know, you know we
- 3:59Speaker 2: don't have with Kobe sat very sadly. Kobe is certainly
- 4:03Speaker 2: my top ten of all time of all professional athletes.
- 4:05Speaker 2: But Lebron. It's Lebron and Jordan now. But again, Wayne
- 4:10Speaker 2: Gretzky's right up there. Man. If you follow hockey, I
- 4:12Speaker 2: know you follow it. Wayne Gretzky was special. The excitement
- 4:18Speaker 2: of Alan Iverson on skates is to what I used
- 4:20Speaker 2: to call him. It's just you. When he got the
- 4:23Speaker 2: pocket open ice, you have no but it was special.
- 4:26Speaker 2: But Lebron will be number one for me and especially
- 4:28Speaker 2: by the way in this town. By far, the biggest
- 4:30Speaker 2: transaction in Philopy sports history, no doubt.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Absolutely. So let's take a look at the ten biggest
- 4:37Speaker 1: Philly sports moves. These are free agents or trade that
- 4:42Speaker 1: you have of all time.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I'm not doing drafts. So Lebron's signing. I understand he's
- 4:48Speaker 2: forty one, but Mike, he really is a missing piece
- 4:51Speaker 2: because they needed Let's look at this the impact. Also,
- 4:56Speaker 2: now Dan Wade, a former Cavalier, does not have to start.
- 4:59Speaker 2: That makes their better. Lebron is a facilitator. And look,
- 5:03Speaker 2: let's not forget the Lakers had all sorts of injury
- 5:06Speaker 2: problems with Doncis' injury, Reeves's injury. They wouldn't have been
- 5:12Speaker 2: way better with Lebron if these guys didn't get hurt.
- 5:15Speaker 2: But Lebron, it's going to be. There's so many things
- 5:18Speaker 2: this represents, and this leadership understanding how to win. Can't
- 5:23Speaker 2: wait to see this number two. This is mite surprise
- 5:26Speaker 2: some people, but again I'm older than probably most people listening,
- 5:29Speaker 2: and I live this as a little kid. I didn't
- 5:31Speaker 2: realize quite I had to look it up exactly how
- 5:33Speaker 2: the Flyers got Bernie Paran zero chancey went back to
- 5:37Speaker 2: back titles in seventy four and seventy five without Bernie
- 5:39Speaker 2: parn the late Bernie proNT. Hell of a guy, great guy.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I've been around him personally, Mike. When you talk about
- 5:46Speaker 2: the goaltender standing on his header stoning the other team,
- 5:50Speaker 2: Bernie Paran is number two. The young people probably listening
- 5:54Speaker 2: someone won't know who he is, but you know who.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Bernie proNT was number one and what a great dude.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Oh listen, you mentioned it. The last time the Flyers
- 6:01Speaker 1: won a Stanley Cup was Bernie Brynt. And one of
- 6:04Speaker 1: the biggest reasons why they never were weren't able to
- 6:07Speaker 1: were always came up short was the lack of goaltending.
- 6:10Speaker 1: So it's ironic that they won a Cup because of
- 6:13Speaker 1: their excellent goaltending and haven't been able to win one
- 6:16Speaker 1: because of their inect goaltending.
- 6:19Speaker 2: That's right, number three again, I live this one. I
- 6:24Speaker 2: was at Wayne Pencharter School. It's where Matt Ryan went
- 6:26Speaker 2: and Mike mcglinchy. I guess Adam Goldberg, but I was
- 6:29Speaker 2: at Penn Charter then, and when they signed Pete Rose
- 6:33Speaker 2: coming on from the Reds. He was the missing piece
- 6:35Speaker 2: of the ninety eight team. And remember what Mike Schmidt
- 6:39Speaker 2: said it, Lari Boa said it, others said it without
- 6:43Speaker 2: Rose challenging them, and then of course Dallas Green. They
- 6:46Speaker 2: were not winning. Pete Rose in that unbelievable catch when
- 6:49Speaker 2: it dropped out of bab Boon's hands. Still can't believe that.
- 6:52Speaker 2: By the way, Pete Rose would be number three for me.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Rose. By the way, this is similar to Lebron,
- 6:58Speaker 1: a guy at the end, at the tail end of
- 7:01Speaker 1: his career, but could still play while being in the
- 7:04Speaker 1: twilight of his career, giving the a team that has
- 7:08Speaker 1: perpetually come up short, a championship pedigree player.
- 7:13Speaker 2: That's right, number four, Mike, No chance of Sixers would
- 7:17Speaker 2: have won an eighty two eighty three without this guy.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Moses Malone, oh Man Robo rebounder. What a story. I remember,
- 7:26Speaker 2: had the Sixers not swept, I would have had the
- 7:28Speaker 2: I had tickets lined up for the next game, but
- 7:30Speaker 2: it did matter. Just incredible. Moses Malone and Howard Katz
- 7:36Speaker 2: traded them for Jeff Will won't give me a break.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And I remember talking to Brad Doherty about that during
- 7:42Speaker 2: her time at ESPN. We actually talked about that. He
- 7:45Speaker 2: about when he was shooting at Harrow Katz's backyard in Villanova.
- 7:50Speaker 2: It's kind of funny, but Moses Malone number two, number
- 7:55Speaker 2: four in the lists, but were the number two Mike,
- 7:57Speaker 2: absolutely no chance that they would not want to champion.
- 7:59Speaker 2: He was unbelievable here.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. I vaguely remember watching Moses play. I mean,
- 8:06Speaker 1: I'm only I'm forty nine. I'll be fifty in January,
- 8:09Speaker 1: so I'm a little young for the eighty three six ers,
- 8:12Speaker 1: but I do I vaguely remember him being a part
- 8:16Speaker 1: of the team. And we were talking about this earlier.
- 8:18Speaker 1: As great as Moses would, he's not in the same
- 8:21Speaker 1: stratosphere as in terms of a star of Lebron James.
- 8:25Speaker 2: No, no, no, but mat yeah, absolutely story when I
- 8:28Speaker 2: was in high school, he was the missing piece for that.
- 8:30Speaker 2: And then number five this one left the Carlton, number
- 8:35Speaker 2: thirty two of Mike when they made the trade with
- 8:36Speaker 2: the Cardinals. What an absolute of the biggest sis in
- 8:40Speaker 2: MLB history. A Hall of Famer. Forget about what he
- 8:43Speaker 2: looked like with the Twins. Who cares when he lost it?
- 8:46Speaker 2: He was unbelievable, pretty good hitting putcher, another guy eighty
- 8:50Speaker 2: World Series team and one of the best left hittererson
- 8:53Speaker 2: MLB history. What a trade, what an acquisition. He's number
- 8:56Speaker 2: five on my list.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Yeah. I do remember Carlton a little bit. I mean again,
- 9:01Speaker 1: a little young, but I saw him towards the end, right,
- 9:03Speaker 1: I saw him more at the twilight of his career
- 9:06Speaker 1: with the Phillies and then as he bounced around with
- 9:08Speaker 1: some Soda Twins San Francisco Giants. I choose to forget
- 9:11Speaker 1: a lot of those Carlton, but you're right. I mean
- 9:14Speaker 1: what he brought to the Phillies to win that World
- 9:16Speaker 1: Series and eight. But people forget. You know, he came
- 9:18Speaker 1: over in the trade with the Cardinals.
- 9:20Speaker 2: That's right, that's right, number six. I mentioned it earlier briefly,
- 9:23Speaker 2: Doctor j D. The ABA merger, getting him in the
- 9:27Speaker 2: transaction with the Nets. If you might remember his deal again,
- 9:31Speaker 2: I was a very little kid, but I remember the contract.
- 9:33Speaker 2: It was unheard of six years, six million, a million
- 9:36Speaker 2: a year, Mike. That would be now like fifty to
- 9:39Speaker 2: sixty billion a year that it was just unheard of.
- 9:42Speaker 2: And again he was so special. I got the Doctor
- 9:46Speaker 2: J shoes, the converse, the red ones. I was mesmerized.
- 9:50Speaker 2: He was. He was a skywalker. Mike. You remember, he
- 9:53Speaker 2: was one of the first hard dunkers, special dunker. Great guy.
- 9:57Speaker 2: He's number six. Again, I know you're younger than I,
- 10:00Speaker 2: but for those of those who are enough to remember,
- 10:01Speaker 2: Doctor J was unbelievab when they first got him.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Yeah, Doc again, he's another one where I saw him.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Barkley was like a rookie in those years. So I
- 10:10Speaker 1: saw Doc really at the end of his career for
- 10:14Speaker 1: the most part, when I mean his last couple of
- 10:16Speaker 1: years in Philly. You know, he wasn't the same player.
- 10:19Speaker 1: But I got to imagine in the eighties eighty three
- 10:21Speaker 1: winning those championship with the MVP, finished third in the MVP,
- 10:24Speaker 1: second in the MVP. I mean, he was a dynamic
- 10:27Speaker 1: dunking type of player. I was talking about the fact
- 10:32Speaker 1: that at that time he was probably one of the
- 10:35Speaker 1: bigger stars, but probably not as big of a star
- 10:39Speaker 1: as Lebron Is.
- 10:40Speaker 2: No, no, but he was the Michael Jordan before Michael
- 10:43Speaker 2: Jordan's in terms of athleticism, wide open, hard dunker number six,
- 10:48Speaker 2: doctor j number seven. You don't have. It's not necessary
- 10:52Speaker 2: to have won a championship. But when charl Lewens came here,
- 10:57Speaker 2: Mike in two thousand and four, I remember that first
- 11:00Speaker 2: practice with over ten thousand people. I've never seen anything
- 11:03Speaker 2: like it before at Lehigh where since it was special
- 11:06Speaker 2: between him and Owen, him and McNabb. It'll be if
- 11:11Speaker 2: you talk about philadephy Sports Tragedies is obviously in our
- 11:13Speaker 2: top five because of how he ruined it, absolutely ruined it.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Mike Terarall, Owens was special at number eighty one and
- 11:20Speaker 2: they never would have gotten the Super Bowl that year.
- 11:22Speaker 2: And for him to come back, I still cannot believe it.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Playing with them coming off the ankle surgery. It's really
- 11:30Speaker 2: incredible what he was able to do in that game.
- 11:32Speaker 2: It's really really special.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Yeah, and back I talked about too earlier. I can
- 11:36Speaker 1: remember I was on my way to the airport to
- 11:37Speaker 1: go to Philly spring training was snowing out, and when
- 11:40Speaker 1: that whole thing happened. If you remember, you know it
- 11:42Speaker 1: was hit them or the the Orioles, the Ravens. You know,
- 11:46Speaker 1: it was like a weird situation got avoided that whole thing,
- 11:50Speaker 1: and you're right the circus that happened with him coming
- 11:53Speaker 1: here and then what it did for that team. You
- 11:55Speaker 1: know mcnet who where what I have you would have
- 11:58Speaker 1: thought of McNabb, who was very polarizing had he had
- 12:02Speaker 1: a player like t O for the entirety of his
- 12:05Speaker 1: career instead of just one year.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Oh, I mean a year and a half, right, and
- 12:09Speaker 2: then the next one. Mike. They did not win a
- 12:12Speaker 2: ring with him, but the Late Royal Holliday Doc Holiday.
- 12:15Speaker 2: It's just he was so special, the no hitter. It's
- 12:20Speaker 2: just really really super cool Mike. They couldn't quite get
- 12:23Speaker 2: there as far as we thought they would with him.
- 12:25Speaker 2: That was a major transaction with with the Blue Jays.
- 12:28Speaker 2: And there's one you have to give Roomen Tomorrow credit.
- 12:31Speaker 2: I mean, that was a great, great move number.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Nine, only to be overshadowed by trading Cliff Lee on
- 12:37Speaker 1: the same day.
- 12:38Speaker 2: I know that was, which is insane. Number nine. This
- 12:42Speaker 2: one he was here four years. This is another one.
- 12:45Speaker 2: We'll remember where we were when AJ Brown was acquired
- 12:48Speaker 2: during the twenty two draft. It should have been longer.
- 12:51Speaker 2: They won a Super Bowl with him. It was a
- 12:53Speaker 2: great trade. Great job by Howi's staying on with John Robinson,
- 12:57Speaker 2: the Tennessee Titans general manager. It probably helped get John
- 13:00Speaker 2: Robinson fired. Unfortunately, what an acquisition, What a trade, Mike,
- 13:05Speaker 2: I mean, what could you say about aj Brown? Unfortunately
- 13:07Speaker 2: he wanted out and they did it. But it was
- 13:09Speaker 2: pretty darn good.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Yeah, aj Draft Knight. I mean when they made that
- 13:13Speaker 1: trade kind of came out of right field, Like that's
- 13:15Speaker 1: one of those things where you're not hearing reports of
- 13:17Speaker 1: that happening. It just happens. And we saw what the
- 13:20Speaker 1: end result was for for the franchise getting him. And
- 13:23Speaker 1: then the last one.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Yeah, the last one, although I'll tell you what, well,
- 13:27Speaker 2: Jaylen Brown on four, we have to see if they
- 13:28Speaker 2: can win at least win. That's right up there, though
- 13:30Speaker 2: they hasn't even played a game yet. But Saquon Barkley, Mike,
- 13:35Speaker 2: we were skeptical and gotta be honest with because we
- 13:37Speaker 2: just didn't know. He was so hurt with the Giants,
- 13:40Speaker 2: but had the best season in NFL history at running
- 13:44Speaker 2: back from beginning to end, and he had Mike. That
- 13:47Speaker 2: What an acquisition. What a signing he got, Dad that Mike,
- 13:51Speaker 2: he got an extension after one season. Remember they redid
- 13:54Speaker 2: his deal. It's ridiculous, but it was it was worth it.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Great job by Howie.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Yeah, that is the Barkley signing, you know, which, by
- 14:03Speaker 1: the way, gets chronicled in that hard knocks off seeds
- 14:06Speaker 1: and giants thing, which adds to the whole you know
- 14:10Speaker 1: thing of him coming leaving New York coming to Philadelphia.
- 14:14Speaker 1: One of the great stories in Philadelphia Eagles history. You know,
- 14:18Speaker 1: it's funny too, is Lebron I think is easily the
- 14:21Speaker 1: biggest star in maybe the history of the city. The
- 14:24Speaker 1: Eagles don't really have that because their Super Bowls are
- 14:27Speaker 1: won by quarterbacks who are not considered like superstar level players,
- 14:32Speaker 1: you know what I mean?
- 14:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah I do. But Mike, if you look
- 14:39Speaker 2: at this list overall, not everyone won a Super Bowl
- 14:44Speaker 2: with them, Roy Halliday and Tara Lewans, but they all
- 14:46Speaker 2: they all contribute to the greatness of those teams.
- 14:48Speaker 1: And huge impacts.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Yeah. I just wanted to change it up because a
- 14:52Speaker 2: lot of you listening grew up in Philly, South Jersey
- 14:57Speaker 2: and it. But I'm glad I mention and Bernie Prime
- 15:00Speaker 2: because for those of us I didn't really know him
- 15:03Speaker 2: but I've been around him socially, because again, you weren't,
- 15:07Speaker 2: You weren't old enough to remember him. I was. I
- 15:09Speaker 2: was young, very young, but my remembrance of how dominant
- 15:14Speaker 2: a goalie can be, that was really the first time
- 15:15Speaker 2: I understood in hockey mic a goalie can carryer hockey team.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And he sure as he did with a little obviously.
- 15:21Speaker 1: With hell good list Adam kaplan. By the way, on Tuesday,
- 15:25Speaker 1: when Adam's back, the Eagles will be reporting to training
- 15:29Speaker 1: camp and we will have more all the birds as
- 15:31Speaker 1: they are back starting next week right here on Football
- 15:34Speaker 1: at four on the Sports Bash. Enjoy the weekend.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Man, you're truth. Thanks
