Transcript
- 0:05Well, welcome to the Rocker Skating podcast.
- 0:07We have a Spanish duo today on our interview, Tim Deke, Olivia
- 0:13Smart. Hi, how are you?
- 0:15Hola? Hola What what like Olympics?
- 0:20You're all done with the Olympics and you're you're
- 0:24getting ready for worlds. How was the Olympics?
- 0:27That's hard to describe in in a short sentence, but it was an
- 0:32absolute amazing, amazing time. And I will never forget that
- 0:38time. It was absolutely different than
- 0:40four years ago. And sharing those moments
- 0:43together with my partner Olivia was amazing.
- 0:47Like that's literally all I can say.
- 0:48Like there was not one moment which I was like, you know,
- 0:53there was 24/7 stuff going on and we enjoyed it a lot.
- 0:58I think online our on our social media platform you could tell
- 1:01that as far as we enjoyed it a lot.
- 1:04I mean, it's so crazy, right? You, you both were in Beijing
- 1:06four years ago. Obviously nobody was there
- 1:10except for the athletes and like me and 100 journalists or
- 1:15whatever it was, how many ever journalists there were.
- 1:17It was, it was kind of crazy how different those 2 Olympic
- 1:21experiences were. Olivia, what about you?
- 1:23Like what? How was there are obviously
- 1:26other things that happen. Congratulations on your
- 1:28engagement. Thank you.
- 1:30But how was your second Olympic experience?
- 1:34I used the word kind of like Tim said, but in a brief like one
- 1:38word. It's memorable, everything down
- 1:42to the opening ceremony of the Olympics and that experience of
- 1:45carrying the flag for Spain, then the competition going as
- 1:49well as it did for Tim and I and having 2 great Olympic skates.
- 1:53And that's what every athlete dreams of, is like performing at
- 1:56their best at the Olympic Games. So when you actually do that,
- 1:58you're like, Oh yes, so we did that.
- 2:01We had that moment on the ice together at the Olympics with
- 2:05our families in the stands and the crowd and like, we got to
- 2:07like see them like while we were on the ice and wave up to them.
- 2:12And then the the celebrations continued for the both of us,
- 2:17but for myself especially because I got engaged.
- 2:20So my whole Olympic experience, I left and I was like, what did
- 2:24I do to deserve all of this? What did I do?
- 2:27Because I feel like the luckiest girl on earth right now.
- 2:31And everything down to like the Olympic competition, to getting
- 2:36engaged, having experience with Tim at the games, my family at
- 2:41the games and now John Luke, my fiance.
- 2:44It was incredible. And there's like, you know, the
- 2:46post Olympic depression that they say is a thing.
- 2:50I don't know whether it was because we like lived so
- 2:53presently in the moment. And just like I know we didn't
- 2:57take anything for granted when we were there.
- 2:59Weirdly, I don't know about you, Tim, but myself, I haven't had
- 3:02that like crash or that down yet.
- 3:05And I'm fingers crossed in touch wood.
- 3:08I don't think I will because I feel like I've grown from this
- 3:12Olympic experience and it's changed me in so many ways for
- 3:17the better that I'm like not looking in the past and missing
- 3:21it. I'm like using it moving
- 3:22forward. Yeah.
- 3:24I'm just super grateful to have experienced an Olympics that's
- 3:27like a proper Olympics four years ago.
- 3:29It was incredible. I had the best time four years
- 3:31ago. Like my Olympics four years ago
- 3:34was 2 great skates as well. And it was the moment John, Luke
- 3:37and I like kind of started. So I had a great Olympics.
- 3:41What a quad, What a? Quad Four years later, who would
- 3:44have thought I would have got better?
- 3:46So yeah, we're really lucky and it sparked and light in the both
- 3:51of us that we didn't even think was there.
- 3:53So we're super grateful and our families as well.
- 3:56They're like, wow, that was amazing.
- 3:58I mean, both of you were there with your partners and your
- 4:02partners. And so that experience has to
- 4:07have been incredibly good. I mean, Tim, you went a little
- 4:09viral, too. Both of you went viral at the
- 4:13Olympics. Tim, talk about your matador
- 4:16outfit. Well, I had this I'm how to say
- 4:20like I had this idea a little of the Olympics, OK, Like I want to
- 4:25for some reason, some art came to my mind in the evening.
- 4:29OK, I want to have some outfit for just our gear and I want to
- 4:34I want to do some something crazy.
- 4:37And then originally I had the plan to do it to win it for our
- 4:42for our Spanish singer skater for Tommy, because he was
- 4:47getting to the minions and for for Spain as well.
- 4:49And I was like, that could be an option.
- 4:52But then we competed the day after.
- 4:54So I was like, no, I'm not going to go and watch in the this
- 4:57thing. I'm not going to do that.
- 4:58I need to focus like come on. But then of course my girlfriend
- 5:02was also there and as getting to the music, the white bull, yeah,
- 5:08made a lot of sense. And yeah, I told her before
- 5:13about that outfit. I didn't told her that I'm going
- 5:15to wear it though. And she also actually didn't see
- 5:18me in the stands, which was funny as well, but just.
- 5:22Probably a good, maybe a good thing distraction.
- 5:26Actually maybe a good thing, but yeah, it was more like for fun,
- 5:30but also to to really show my full, full support, which I'm
- 5:34therefore I was sharing this experience with her and at the
- 5:38time after my competition to really support her with the
- 5:41nerves going into her individual event, of course.
- 5:46And yeah, spend a lot of time together, which we unfortunately
- 5:50usually don't do because we had no long distance relationship,
- 5:53right. And so it made it even more
- 5:56special to share this Olympic experience also with her.
- 6:01It was just, yeah, again, I used the word amazing, very unique
- 6:05experience. Like not only the Olympics, but
- 6:07sharing it with your partner and with all your loved ones is
- 6:13breathtaking. Yeah, for sure.
- 6:15Words. Like, you know, the two of you
- 6:21had those moments and they were very early in the Olympics,
- 6:25right? You, you all skated in within
- 6:28the really like the first week of the Olympics.
- 6:31And then you got to stick around for another week, week and 1/2
- 6:35or so, right? So that you could, you could do
- 6:37all of the rest of the stuff. Like it's different than a World
- 6:41Championships where you're completely crammed into a few
- 6:45days and you don't even get to do much else as So what were the
- 6:51other types of things that you all did?
- 6:55What were some of the more memorable ones that that that
- 6:58you had? Well, as you said, like we got
- 7:01to, we got to the Games, we had about a week to settle in, do
- 7:05the opening ceremony and then compete.
- 7:07It was a quicker turn around than what we did four years ago.
- 7:11But at the same time, like you said, it's also more time than
- 7:14what it is World Championships. But it was great for us this
- 7:19time around. I know it wasn't the same for
- 7:21all athletes. A lot of athletes did have to
- 7:23leave a couple of days after the event ended.
- 7:26It really depended on the federation and the situation of
- 7:29the skater. We were even told that we might
- 7:32not be able to stay until the end.
- 7:34But we did kind of fight that because we were like, you're not
- 7:38kicking me out. But also our aim was to be in
- 7:41the Olympic Gala with our like fun gala run number.
- 7:46So we were luckily able to stay. And honestly, good job because I
- 7:50didn't really well personally, but I know Tim as well.
- 7:53We didn't do so much of the interactive things in the
- 7:55Olympic Village prior to our event because it was so
- 7:59overwhelming and there were so many things to do.
- 8:03And Tim and I really wanted to conserve our energy and really
- 8:05focus on the competition 1st. And then we were luckily able to
- 8:09have the time afterwards to enjoy those things in the
- 8:12Olympic Village, like going to the Coca-Cola lounge, making a
- 8:15Coca-Cola kind of a picture, the pin trading like everything was
- 8:19after the competition for us because it was a lot to take in.
- 8:24But we were, we are there at the Olympics to compete.
- 8:26So that's what we wanted to put as our priority.
- 8:29So then we really dove into like the social side of it
- 8:32afterwards. And for myself, well, also we're
- 8:36in Milan, Italy to explore a bit of Milan as well, to go into the
- 8:41city, go downtown. I know a lot of athletes got
- 8:44there earlier, so they did that in advance.
- 8:46But it was nice to just, you know, spend time out of the
- 8:49Olympic Village as well, see our families in other ways in a new,
- 8:53in a new place. Go out for a romantic dinner
- 8:56with our significant others. We went out for a group dinner,
- 8:59the four of us, so just like have a little, well, a mini
- 9:03vacation in a way as well because this was our only time
- 9:06off until we get back into things for the World
- 9:09Championships. So we're grateful that we were
- 9:11able to do at the games and also let us kind of like let
- 9:15everything sink in like what had just happened and also milk the
- 9:20the spotlight of what the Olympic Games is like.
- 9:23Figure skating is a niche sport. It's getting more popular, but
- 9:27we still know that every four years we've become more and more
- 9:30popular. So during this month, every four
- 9:32years, you better believe we're milking it as much as we can.
- 9:36So that's what we did. Yeah.
- 9:40So just enjoying like the Olympic Village.
- 9:42There's just so many things to do as an athlete in the village.
- 9:45Luckily, yeah, even just the pin trading as you know, like take
- 9:48so took over a big part of our Olympic experience and then
- 9:53going to watch other events. Both of us went to as many
- 9:56hockey games as we could. Tim went to the long track, we
- 9:59both went to short track and then to watch the pairs events,
- 10:02etcetera. Like we wanted to watch as many
- 10:05events as we could also being at the Olympic Games because that
- 10:07was also not so much a thing four years ago for us.
- 10:11So yeah, just really enjoy the Olympic spirit after the
- 10:15competition when you can fully like, take it all in as well.
- 10:19So great. Yeah, overwhelming has been the
- 10:21word that I've heard the most number of times when people are
- 10:25talking about the actual village.
- 10:26It's just like sensory overload for sure.
- 10:29Yeah, like I remember having to go to the dining hall with my
- 10:32headphones in a couple of times just to be like, don't speak to
- 10:35anybody. Like I need this like moment of
- 10:37peace and quiet. But that never happened.
- 10:39Like it's like being on a school trip.
- 10:43That's how I literally how I described it as is being on a
- 10:46school trip in high school. But it was a three-week long,
- 10:49like, school trip. I took.
- 10:53I took a book. Yeah, I took a book to read.
- 10:55Did I read a page? I read, like, a few pages before
- 10:57bed. But other than that, you're in
- 10:59your room and you're like, I feel like I'm missing out on
- 11:02things outside. And and the things outside where
- 11:06people being like can I trade a pin with you?
- 11:09Oh my God. Someone.
- 11:10Said in the dining hall. The the, the people who give you
- 11:14the food, even them were like, oh, Spain, you're pretty rare.
- 11:18You have a pin like with those eyes.
- 11:20You're like, can I just have a boiled egg, please?
- 11:22Yeah. Yeah, a little aggressive.
- 11:25A little aggressive, Yeah. OK.
- 11:28Speaking of Beijing, I want to maybe take you back four years
- 11:32ago, we talked about the weird Olympic experience a little bit
- 11:36of Beijing, but you all were with different partners there,
- 11:43right, Tim, you're with Katarina and and Olivia, you're with
- 11:47Adrian and subsequently got together in the offseason after
- 11:54that. So tell me about the the origins
- 11:57of it. I'm sure you've talked about it
- 11:58a number of times that I want to want to just hear four years
- 12:02after, like how, what, what does the origin story look like for
- 12:05you? Go ahead.
- 12:09Yeah, it really started with like us not skating with our
- 12:13former partners anymore, right. Adrian retired and I stopped
- 12:17skating with my former partner in Katarina after the Olympics
- 12:20or more like after the World Championships towards the end of
- 12:22the season. And then we were both, I can
- 12:25speak for the both of us in that moment.
- 12:27We were both like in the moment we were like, what do we do?
- 12:32What's next? Like what, where do we want to
- 12:35go? For me, it didn't didn't took
- 12:38too long to be honest, like maybe a month and a half, two
- 12:41months where I was like, OK, now I definitely want to continue.
- 12:44I have so much fire still in me. I want to continue skating,
- 12:48looking for a new partner. And Olivia was probably the
- 12:51first one I texted because I saw it online that she also stopped
- 12:56skating with Adrian. And then we knew each other for
- 13:00a long time, of course, from from skating.
- 13:02But the first answer was, yeah, no, she was not.
- 13:06She was not in the headspace that they went out in the
- 13:09headspace at that moment. Maybe you want to say that you
- 13:13were in Montreal still, but like what was going on?
- 13:17I was in limbo of like, am I going to continue?
- 13:20Am I not going to continue? I was, yeah, I was really going
- 13:24for a tough time, like personally with my career being
- 13:27put on pause and the way it happened and also like my
- 13:31relationship at the time. And I was just like, I don't
- 13:33want to say yes to this guy and just be be blow up in his face.
- 13:38So I did. I very honestly said like, look,
- 13:40this is a really bad time. I'm not ready for this right
- 13:43now. Like it's not you.
- 13:44It's a no. Kinda.
- 13:46Yeah. So yeah, I gave him a no, but it
- 13:50wasn't like a no. But check back in with me in a
- 13:52few months. I remember just being like, no,
- 13:56I was doing new things in Montreal at the time.
- 13:59I was just trying to kind of like find myself out of skating
- 14:03and I really didn't think it would be possible for me to get
- 14:06a new partner, no matter who it was, whether it was Tim or
- 14:09somebody else. I didn't think it would be
- 14:11possible for me to get a new partner and get to the place I
- 14:14wanted to or where I was with Adrian.
- 14:17In my mind mind I was like, if I got a new partner like this is
- 14:21going to be near to impossible. Like how, how is this even a
- 14:23thing? Even though we both myself and I
- 14:26know Tim as well, we both left the Olympics with like this
- 14:28whole new confidence and fire in US.
- 14:32And at that time I was like, I don't want something that's too
- 14:34challenging right now. I need a minute.
- 14:37So yeah, I did say no at first. But then Tim was in Montreal, I
- 14:41was doing, I stepped in for some coaching in Montreal and I was
- 14:47on the ice and Tim had a tryout in Montreal, a couple of
- 14:53tryouts. Long story short, one of them
- 14:54that I actually helped set up, there was a girl that I knew of
- 15:00and suggested it's the coaches that Tim has a tryout with her
- 15:03because I knew he was looking for a partner to reach out to
- 15:06me. So he had these tryouts with
- 15:09these girls and then the coaches invited me over for dinner one
- 15:15night and after 2 bottles of wine they sat me down and said
- 15:20we think you need to have a tryout with Tim.
- 15:22And I was like what? Long story short, the reason why
- 15:26it came such a shock this question is because a week prior
- 15:30I signed my dancing and ice contract and they knew I'd sign
- 15:33my dancing and ice contract because I asked them if they
- 15:36thought it was a good idea if I do it.
- 15:38They were, I asked like Marie France because they did battle
- 15:40of the blades as well. It's like, is there something
- 15:42I'll enjoy? And Marie France was like,
- 15:44you'll love it. She's like, even if you choose
- 15:46to come back to the the sport or not, she said it will help you
- 15:49grow as a person and as a skater and athlete.
- 15:51So I took her advice and I signed that contract.
- 15:53But then a week later they're telling me I need to have a try
- 15:55out with Tim Deke. And I'm like, but they said, I
- 16:01know they, they briefly said like, I know you signed your
- 16:03contract, but we think you just need to have this try out just
- 16:06to see if this is something that you want.
- 16:08Because if you do want to continue, this is your only
- 16:11option. Like this is the time.
- 16:13I'm like, OK, so I had a tryout and we had a tryout.
- 16:16I text him and said like, hey, are you free tomorrow by any
- 16:19chance for a tryout? So I can't imagine what his
- 16:22reaction was. Yeah, like just kidding.
- 16:25Yeah, my plan was kind of out because obviously I knew, like I
- 16:30said before, OK, Olivia's still there.
- 16:33She's not not skating at the moment, but she's still there.
- 16:36So there might be still a slightly small chance.
- 16:40So, yeah. And then I got that text to the
- 16:43beginning of the week or something.
- 16:44And then we skated like two or three days and then, yeah,
- 16:49decided to skate together and go on a journey together.
- 16:53Yeah, but I was like, hey, yeah, let's do this, let's commit to
- 16:56this. But can you wait eight months?
- 16:59I'm ATV thing I need to do. I'm like, I have an obligation
- 17:03in the UK on a reality TV show. We tried to coordinate with him
- 17:08coming to the UK every so often, but I, my, I was packed.
- 17:12Like my schedule was busier than I expected, but I'm like going
- 17:15into this TV show like, hey, guys, I'm doing this, but I'm
- 17:17also, I have a new partner waiting for me and I'm trying to
- 17:20train to eventually go to the Olympics again.
- 17:22They didn't care. So my schedule was packed, jam
- 17:25packed, and then as soon as dancing I send it, I was like,
- 17:29OK, I need a quick break and then we'll get straight to it.
- 17:31And it wasn't even like you were.
- 17:32You were like eliminated in the first show.
- 17:35It was like you went all the way and won it.
- 17:38So you had to do the whole thing.
- 17:40Yeah, I was like, if I get eliminated, I'll have so much
- 17:42more time. It'll be so different.
- 17:44Yeah, no, from like halfway through the show, I was like,
- 17:48hey, we might be able to win this.
- 17:49So I need to like commit now. Tim, you're on pause.
- 17:54It's like my other skating partner really needs the work.
- 17:56And Tim, I actually brought Tim in.
- 17:58Tim came to the UK and like helped me with Nile a little bit
- 18:01and stuff. So it became like a group
- 18:02project. That was also then a cool start
- 18:05Tower competitive career as well, together sharing new
- 18:09experiences that we didn't even expect.
- 18:11Right. So you all started in 2023 in
- 18:15the fall and and you've had three seasons together.
- 18:18Now if you look back, you know at the 1st first half season was
- 18:24was challenging, right? You all had not that much time
- 18:28to train together. You were still trying to figure
- 18:30out how to skate with each other and there were there were some
- 18:34starts and stops. And if you look back at that
- 18:37time, what was the maybe the most challenging thing that you
- 18:41all had to kind of deal with and how did you go about getting
- 18:45there for? Me there's like the season star.
- 18:49Overall, we were both pretty like confident in what we were
- 18:52doing, our material and the way with the way things were
- 18:56feeling. It wasn't until we start
- 18:59competing that the the outcome of what we were putting out
- 19:04there was not what we expected. So for example, the scores and
- 19:08the placement. We were pretty content though
- 19:11regardless because we were a brand new team.
- 19:14We were out there competing for the first time.
- 19:16So we knew it was going to be difficult and we knew we would
- 19:18have to start from the bottom and then we weren't complaining
- 19:23because we got 2 Grand Prixs as a brand new team.
- 19:26So that's like a pretty good and big step.
- 19:31So we were just kind of like rolling with the punches in what
- 19:34was happening in that moment. I don't think it was until the
- 19:40World Championships where I think the both of us kind of hit
- 19:46a position of a Lord. This isn't going well.
- 19:52Do do we want, how do we go about this and do we want to
- 19:57figure this out and go about this because this is
- 19:59challenging. And it's also not just
- 20:03challenging like physically and mentally.
- 20:05It was also kind of like breaking that confidence that we
- 20:08had just got from the Olympic Games 2022.
- 20:10It felt like, you know, we were we just had a really big kind.
- 20:13Now we're like at rock bottom. And we had that moment of the
- 20:17World Championships where we finished 20th.
- 20:22We had a decent. 19th, 19th. 19th OK thank you fact checks.
- 20:30I love that we had, we didn't have a terrible skate, we just
- 20:34didn't score well. And also our programs, our free
- 20:38dance especially was just not being well perceived.
- 20:41And we know what material means in ice dance.
- 20:44And as a new team, finding anything that worked for us was
- 20:49just challenging because we didn't know what our styles
- 20:51were. We didn't know what would work
- 20:52for the both of us. And we just chose our music
- 20:55based on what we felt was right for us.
- 20:59So yeah, after World championships, it took us some
- 21:02time to re align with, OK, why are we doing this and do we want
- 21:08to go through with this regardless of the results?
- 21:11And if we do, how are we going to do that?
- 21:14So, yeah, we realigned after the World Championships and just, we
- 21:17decided, like, look, we partnered up because we had
- 21:20something left in us that we weren't ready to give up on.
- 21:24We both wanted our careers to end on our terms.
- 21:29And also like while we're still young, healthy and have the
- 21:33opportunity to be doing this sport at such a high level in
- 21:37front of thousands and thousands of people each time, Like why
- 21:41wouldn't we take this opportunity?
- 21:44We just had to kind of align, like, OK, what's the risk reward
- 21:47of it? Like if it makes us feel good,
- 21:50great. But if it's like a result based
- 21:52thing, then we're probably never going to be pleased sort of
- 21:56deal. But then.
- 21:58Little did we know, changing that perspective for us actually
- 22:02equalled out to results. And that's still and to this
- 22:06still now to this day, our mentality because having the
- 22:10expectations of results and numbers and anything like that,
- 22:14it's like we're always going to be disappointed in some ways.
- 22:18We're still learning. You know, we're only human.
- 22:21We're also athletes and very competitive athletes.
- 22:23So we want to succeed, but we have to catch ourselves in
- 22:26reminding us like, OK, why are we doing this?
- 22:30And it's really helped us and it's helped our trajectory in
- 22:32the past two seasons. And I would do believe in we've
- 22:36spoke quite often. Like, we do believe we needed
- 22:38that first season together to like, you know, kick us back
- 22:41into shape because we came from this high from the Olympic Game
- 22:442022 with all this confidence. And like, like, I can do this,
- 22:49like just partnered up with someone else.
- 22:50That's another Olympian. Sure, we needed to be kicked
- 22:53down a few notches in order to be where we are today, and it's
- 22:57only helped us skate with, I'd say, more gratitude than
- 23:03anything else. Well, and and you've also now
- 23:06become known as the ones with the innovative moves too.
- 23:10I mean, like the that really started in that second season
- 23:14together. And I think a lot of people will
- 23:17remember the the choreographed lifts and you know, it was.
- 23:21A competition as well. From the from from the first
- 23:25competition as well where it didn't work, but it tell me
- 23:31about that right. That's something that really has
- 23:37separated you from other teams. And you know how you you all
- 23:42know how deep the ice dance fields are.
- 23:45And for you to be able to say like, hey, I, I've made a mark
- 23:50on the sport with the things that we do like, was that a
- 23:54conscious decision? And how do you think about that
- 23:58when you're choreographing new material?
- 24:00But it was for me, the first moment where I was like, oh,
- 24:04what is going to happen from this point on was when Roman put
- 24:08us in the beginning pose of our Doom 1 program into like a
- 24:12thought of ball or he called it at that point like the ball.
- 24:16And I was like, OK, what's going to happen?
- 24:18Because there was something so different.
- 24:20I never had the position of and the style where it went from
- 24:26there. How he unwind this position with
- 24:29us together. That's when I thought like, OK,
- 24:34this can be something really, really special.
- 24:36And then it was when we started working on the elements and the
- 24:39choreograph and choreographic elements where whenever we did
- 24:45it, I was like, OK, no one else did this stuff before.
- 24:48This is going to be so unique and so special.
- 24:53So we knew that like when when it came to the choreography and
- 24:56like skating the program, but what we also me personally, what
- 25:00I also felt was OK, the first run through of the doing 1
- 25:04program, I'm like, OK, we need to put in a lot of work here
- 25:08because it was very, very difficult to perform those moves
- 25:11in a full, full program. I mean anytime.
- 25:14But doing this like doing a part with one lift is another thing
- 25:17than doing a formula program of those lifts and elements.
- 25:21And then and yeah, starting that season was our Doom Doom 1
- 25:26program, of course didn't didn't went really well in the first
- 25:30competition. But then going back for from it,
- 25:35going back to training, Patrice asked us or asked me.
- 25:39OK, do you still want to do this choreography lift or do we need
- 25:43to change it? And I did it again and there was
- 25:46like a slight movement again in the practice and he went into
- 25:50the direction that we have to change it.
- 25:52But I was like, no, this is the most unique lift figure skating
- 25:55has kind of seen so far in a choreographic based element.
- 25:59I really want to make this work. So we did it kind of over and
- 26:02over. And that's what we really did
- 26:04throughout the season. We, we really worked on our
- 26:07consistency in practice and on the elements especially.
- 26:12And that's what also took us to the point where we are now,
- 26:15like, I mean, we call it the fast track.
- 26:17Like other couples have a full circle full for Four Seasons of
- 26:22preparing. We had like 3, three seasons as
- 26:26a new couple together. So we had to go on a fast track,
- 26:29but really going in this training consistency and going
- 26:34with those special kind of elements really brought us to
- 26:38the point where we are now. I think we can really say that
- 26:42we brought a new level of figure skating and ice stands to our
- 26:46sport, which skating has never seen before.
- 26:49So that's that's pretty special for sure.
- 26:52I mean, using the choreographic elements as they were intended
- 26:55to be, which is creativity, right?
- 26:58Like that's, that's the whole, that's the whole thing about
- 27:02introducing those elements. Finding unique things is just so
- 27:06difficult nowadays in the world of art and dance man.
- 27:12Everyone's everyone's algorithm in the summer is probably linked
- 27:15up to the same things, the same off ice dancers doing lifts and
- 27:18I was trying to replicate them on the ice.
- 27:20Like it's even the same with music.
- 27:23Like there's always one song that'll show up that might trend
- 27:27and then somebody uses it and then you have 5 people using it.
- 27:31It's hard to be unique in the world of ice stands, especially
- 27:36without being too far out-of-the-box as well.
- 27:40Because you have the classic ice stands and then you have the
- 27:43really, really, really far out-of-the-box ice stands.
- 27:46And like, I like to stand out as a person.
- 27:49Tim likes to stand out as a person.
- 27:51We both like acting and playing roles, so it just came very
- 27:55natural for us to play like the characters in Dune.
- 27:59But when, like Tim was saying, Roman was coming up with the
- 28:02elements in the choreography, I was like, this is really fucking
- 28:04weird. This is weird.
- 28:06But from what we'd experienced in our first season together and
- 28:10the downfall of worlds, I was like, I'm open to anything at
- 28:13this point. I was like, let's just roll of
- 28:16it. Let's just have fun with it.
- 28:19And because of that, we were able to come up with just a very
- 28:24intricate, unique, weird program that fit Dune.
- 28:28And a fun fact that not many people know is romance
- 28:33icographer of Dune 1 and Dune 2 and he has never seen the
- 28:36movies. Never.
- 28:38Not once. And he will not watch the
- 28:40movies. We asked him the other day,
- 28:42would you watch the new one? He's like, no, probably not we.
- 28:46Got at this point to be. Honest, yeah.
- 28:48He think he thinks it's better that way because he doesn't have
- 28:52like a closed vision on what it needs to be and what it looks
- 28:55like. So in the choreography,
- 28:57especially June 1, some moments of that program Tim and I
- 29:01brought to the choreography because we're like, hey, there's
- 29:03this thing called sand walking in the movie.
- 29:06He's like, what? And we showed him it and he's
- 29:08like, OK, you add that in there somewhere.
- 29:10So like those moments in the choreography and the sound
- 29:13effects of the sand like we added because we had watch the
- 29:16movie and dissect it, dissected it.
- 29:20And also Patch, I remember his training at one point and he's
- 29:22like, there's no sand walking movements in your choreography.
- 29:24We're like, we know Roman hasn't seen the movie.
- 29:27He thinks there's camels in the movie.
- 29:29So, so that's also a funny back story to it that he's created
- 29:34these two like his well now viral programs that are going to
- 29:39go down in history based on a award-winning movie that he has
- 29:44still never seen. I think it's funny though.
- 29:47The interesting thing? About.
- 29:48Yeah, the, the interesting thing about that is that without
- 29:52seeing the actual material and the the the plot of the whole
- 29:56thing, you don't make it so liberal.
- 29:58You don't end up being like, oh, you're Paula Treaties or you're,
- 30:02you know, the other person. I can't remember, you know, like
- 30:06the, the like it's, it's the, the, the choreography really is
- 30:10the, the, the feel and the atmosphere of the music.
- 30:14Plus the two of you bring the story in because you have seen
- 30:17the movie, the movies and, and you're able to then then tell
- 30:22your own story with the choreography that has already
- 30:25been put in. So.
- 30:26Yeah, so we had like a full team in a way because Roman was fully
- 30:30basing the choreography off of the music and the feeling from
- 30:33the music. And then we were able to bring
- 30:35our storyline into it. And that's also the way our
- 30:38school here works in Montreal. We have our coaches and
- 30:41choreographers, the technical side coaches, Roman being a
- 30:44choreographer. But then we work with other
- 30:46people, multiple people, other coaches that I am that help us
- 30:50develop the story of the program.
- 30:52It's not just Roman and it's not just Patch and it's not just
- 30:55Marie. There's a an army of people that
- 30:58we work with still to this day on developing the story and the
- 31:02characters of all of our programs.
- 31:05So yeah, it took a village and everybody got invested.
- 31:09Like everybody was bringing their own kind of vision into
- 31:12it. And it just, it helped us
- 31:13develop the layers of what our program programs have.
- 31:17Well, I, I know the two of you have things to do and I, I want
- 31:21to make sure that you all get to do the things that you need to
- 31:24do. But world's coming up in a
- 31:26couple weeks where two Sundays before we head to Prague.
- 31:31So what are you thinking about for that competition?
- 31:36You know, how are you entering this, your third worlds
- 31:41together, right to, you know, get to where you want to get to
- 31:46by the end of the season? Where's your head?
- 31:48For us, it's like each competition, first of all, it's
- 31:50like a new competition. People like to say like, yeah,
- 31:54the world's after the Olympics, you know, like something can
- 31:59happen there, like the doors are open or stuff like this.
- 32:02But we really like to go and every competition as a new
- 32:06competition, obviously. And at Gualts, like every other
- 32:11competition, we want to create a moment on the ice, which we have
- 32:15done so far this season pretty well, especially with our doing
- 32:19program. We always want to create a
- 32:20moment on the ice, which is memorable.
- 32:22And then from this story and from that moment, what we create
- 32:27out of the ice is like after first of all, the feeling after
- 32:30when you're when you've created this moment, we both know it.
- 32:33We look at each other and we were like, OK, yes, we, we just
- 32:37did it again. And that's like the most
- 32:40important for us to create this memorable moment and eat out
- 32:45there together as one and then see what the results and stuff
- 32:49make with that. But of course, try to try to
- 32:53improve our season's best scores.
- 32:55Definitely. But more important, and most
- 32:58most important, is really this moment we create out there
- 33:01together as a couple and the story we want to bring to the
- 33:05crowd and then we will see what happens.
- 33:08Have you figured out what is giving you the exclamation
- 33:11point? I knew it's coming.
- 33:13Oh, it's coming. I was going to say, and our goal
- 33:16is to not get a an exclamation point in the car step.
- 33:21Did you did you get the feedback?
- 33:23We haven't gotten the feedback yet from the games.
- 33:26We know from past events, but for the games we haven't gotten
- 33:29the feedback yet, unfortunately, so we're just training it to our
- 33:34eye right now with a lot of camera work and being very
- 33:39specific. Such a mystery.
- 33:41Yeah, it was a shock to us because we didn't actually know
- 33:46we got the score and we were over the moon with our score
- 33:49when we signed the leader chair. For a while we didn't look at
- 33:52the score sheet when we left because we were like, I don't
- 33:54care. Like that was great, which is
- 33:57very rare for us. We usually like to look at our
- 33:59levels and see didn't even bother.
- 34:01We were just on such a high. It wasn't until we reunited with
- 34:04our families upstairs in the stands where my mother told me I
- 34:08probably you got an explanation point.
- 34:10I was like. Huh.
- 34:11And. Then I ran, ran to John Luke.
- 34:13I was like, we got an exclamation point.
- 34:15He's like, yeah. And then we watched the video.
- 34:18We couldn't figure it out. Tim and I saw red immediately.
- 34:22And we were both just like this. We're for like a hot second.
- 34:27Tim was more angry than I was 100%.
- 34:29But we were both just like we felt.
- 34:32We were so angry. Let's just say that.
- 34:35But then we remembered we're at the Olympic Games.
- 34:38We did just do really well. We're with our families.
- 34:41Let's get a glass of wine and enjoy this moment.
- 34:44We'll reevaluate another time, but yeah, we're we're training
- 34:48very diligently right now with that.
- 34:51Rumor has it that's changing as of next year.
- 34:53So it's fingers crossed. The meantime, we'll.
- 34:56Just be careful. Yeah, there's just sometimes
- 34:58when you look at those things and you're like, really, you
- 35:00got, did you get a, did you get a meter stick out to, to measure
- 35:04whether you were two meters apart or two arm legs apart?
- 35:07Like it's like, yeah, it, it, that kind of stuff kills me.
- 35:11The the nitpicking of it for no reason at all other than to say
- 35:15like, gotcha, yeah. Yeah.
- 35:17And it's it's like it's just so costly.
- 35:20Yeah, for so of something it's like.
- 35:22Three points. Yeah, so we were like, oh wow,
- 35:26our heads are going, oh wow, we got one.
- 35:28What do you get? 120, two, 123, the games, 123.
- 35:32We were like, oh, we could have had a 125 freelance at the
- 35:35Olympics. Yeah, So what could have?
- 35:401/22/96 So you could have had a 126 Yeah well you know what it's
- 35:45a a new thing to to go for at the.
- 35:47It's a new goal, Yeah, it's a new goal.
- 35:49It keeps things interesting I guess.
- 35:52Yeah, exactly. And anyway I have the pin from
- 35:54you so. Yeah, I I feel partially
- 35:58responsible. For Oh no, no, no, we just, we
- 36:01just ran with the trend. I know, I know.
- 36:05Well, Olivia, Tim, excited to see you in Prague and enjoy the
- 36:09next two weeks of training and resetting as you go into your
- 36:15final competition of the year. And you know, good luck with
- 36:19everything and I'll see you there.
- 36:21Thank you so much, Jackie. Bye bye.
