- 0:26Welcome to the Pop Culture Junkie podcast. I'm Olivia here with my fellow Junkie.--
- 0:31Shauna and you know what listeners it feels like it's been a while because it has been but
- 0:39what have you been obsessed with recently? I've been obsessed with just like making it through
- 0:44what I'm going to the next. She's sure any week all right? So, staring into the void,
- 0:49using slipping silently into madness. You know it has been a while. I know you travel too much
- 0:56and I miss you whenever you're gone. But I have been watching a lot of stuff. I have a list.
- 1:00Okay, the void has colors. The void has colors. There is stuff in the void. Okay. I slip into it
- 1:07and then I turn on television. Everything feels right again. Yeah. All right, I will vote for you.
- 1:11I'm going to do a quick rundown. Okay. And some of them are pops. Send up them are drops.
- 1:19And some are a little in between airs. Okay. Okay. Real vast. Umbrella Academy aired its final
- 1:25season. Do you watch that show? No, I never have. And I've heard good things. The first couple
- 1:30seasons are very good. This last season was short. It was only I want to say eight. So it's
- 1:38wrong. Why don't you stop for us to keep doing? I don't know. And so it definitely feels rushed.
- 1:44And there's a lot of character choices that are questionable, including one romantic relationship
- 1:49that comes out of nowhere. Yeah. With characters who are seemingly other already in relationships.
- 1:57Okay. I don't know. There's this like gossip girl and we're like, much shuffled. Literally. It's
- 2:03like it's the final season. Why don't we just put her with him instead of him? Yeah. It's I don't know.
- 2:09So it was a little strange ending. But overall, you know, I've always enjoyed watching that show.
- 2:14I'm going to go a little middle on the ending. The final episode. I won't spoil it for anybody who's
- 2:19listening. But I don't know how I also wanted to end other than what it did. So would you so recommend
- 2:25people watch the show as a whole as a whole as like an entire four-season art? Yes, absolutely.
- 2:31Okay. I really liked it as an entire series. Okay. Did it stick the landing? I think it did a
- 2:37couple flips and they cut it tripped in the end and still maybe got a top four. I don't know. Yeah.
- 2:44It is tricky to find an ending that everyone loves. Absolutely. And I've seen a lot of stuff online.
- 2:50If people just hating this season. Yeah. And I didn't hate it. I didn't think it was like
- 2:54game of thrones level. Yeah. Next or level. Yeah. Bullshit. But speaking of, we in our absence,
- 3:01tossing the dragon ended. Yeah. How do you feel about that ending? You know, I really was on the edge
- 3:08of my seat for a couple scenes. Okay. We are going to get spoilery with this one as it aired. God, like
- 3:13a couple of weeks ago. I don't know. But Alice, it comes to Ranera and it's like, yeah, bitch, I'm out.
- 3:20Take it. Yeah. My sons are either rotting or insane. She's like, yeah, I'm not all bad. She will
- 3:29analysis. My daughter float in the river somewhere that's stare at the sky. Yeah. It just
- 3:36bitch. You run away here is how you take over. Here it is. Yes. Overplatter. So I saw this in front of
- 3:42the CEO of my company. Just know how incredibly and appropriate. I said the entire season to
- 3:50a house of the dragon felt like edging. And he was like, I'm unfamiliar with the term edging.
- 3:56No. And so this is giving. And Brad Perry was here. And we like said some word. He's like, what is that?
- 4:03Yeah. And we're like, shit. Now we got to tell Brad Perry what edging is. And he's like, he's
- 4:07show, but we were on a large table of 10 people from my company. And I just pulled up Irving
- 4:13Dictionary. And I was like, this is what Irving Dictionary said. I jump it. He says it out loud. Yeah. And
- 4:17he's just like, got it. That entire season was edging. And I never reach my wall. I got right to
- 4:25the end where you're trying to. And then you can't. Yeah. That final phone. So you just said, yeah,
- 4:30it was fun. But maybe we should call it right here. Yeah. Because the end of season one was so
- 4:35yeah, like you were just like, I want more. Yeah. They're going into dangerous territory, I think. And
- 4:41they I think they were stirring up some Game of Thrones last season haters with that. And didn't
- 4:49go and think it was that bad. I think if season three doesn't start off with an absolute like
- 4:54finger like we're at war like this is going people are like turn on it. I think so too. Like I I
- 5:01haven't turned on it. Yeah. But I've been watching a lot of I watched most shows with my husband.
- 5:06And he's such a hater. Literally a brelic had me by the end. He's like, this is bullshit.
- 5:11I hate so many things. Yeah. And I was like, it was not that bad. Okay. And then we're like
- 5:17nearing the end of season two of House of Dragon. He's like, this show sucks. And I'm like,
- 5:21you are being way too definitive with this is bullshit and this sucks. They're interested.
- 5:27You want? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So he's very in the moment. Yeah. He was like, this is boring.
- 5:33This sucks. And I'm like, I don't think it's boring. Like I think they're again edge just a little too much.
- 5:39I know. And if you edge somebody that hard, you're even with blue balls. Yeah. Or make them come.
- 5:44They're asked we want to be other is another argument why you should have 10 episodes per season.
- 5:50And HV all kind of now Netflix cut it out. Like Bridgerton would have been so much better if it
- 5:56had been 10 episodes. Is it not enough? Bridgerton season three that relationship. Yeah. So
- 6:01rush. Yeah. Which is why I see my face eight. Bridgerton. And we used to have like lost, which was a 25
- 6:09episode season. And that's a little too much to me. Like all of the shows that I'm going to do.
- 6:15You're like 26 episodes. You get all those fillers in the middle. Yeah. But like Buffy and Angel were all 25, 26 episodes.
- 6:22And it was wrong. Dang it. Bring that back. Like I, again, it's expensive. But if they were doing it in the
- 6:28I do. I can do it. Yeah. Yeah. No. And then like, I'm thinking like stranger things. They all,
- 6:35they had shorter seasons, but each episode was like two hours. Yeah. Or something. So it was like, I
- 6:41almost like don't like each time. Though where it's really long. Yeah. Like I kind of like the little break.
- 6:46Like the mid-season. Like family. Get more water. Go to the bathroom. You know. That's with the pause buttons. Yeah.
- 6:54No. No, no. No. No pausing. Yeah. And a binge. It's like, okay, title. I know. I go. You know, I had a mid-season finale.
- 7:02That's another show that wasn't even on my list. Again, so fucking goofy. This is and it kinda guys always goofy. This shows goofy. Okay, that was a point of pain.
- 7:13But there's a lot of points this season where I went this whole episode was unnecessary if they all just communicated with each other.
- 7:20If they all just treated the situation like adults that is the most frustrating trope all times.
- 7:26If you just had a conversation and were like, who do we think we should send to the
- 7:30Hintai Sentai? I don't remember what it's called. Hintai. There's like in this karate championship that they're all trying to go to.
- 7:38And it's like the the Sentai Hintai.
- 7:41No, it's just you.
- 7:45Dude, it was sentai Hintai and it's like karate championship.
- 7:49Count me in. I don't want to get there too.
- 7:52And it's so obvious. Wish of the characters should go because they're like, we got to use our top six karate fighters to go.
- 7:58There's six of them? There's like, there's 25 karate kids on this show.
- 8:03You don't matter. You'll see a kid in the background. He's like, just say and you're like, who the fuck are you?
- 8:09And he's like, maybe I'm gonna get chosen for the anti-Sintai. No, you're not. No, you're not.
- 8:14Oh wow. That the main six characters, you're like, it's gonna be them and then they throw in, I don't know if they would have just been like,
- 8:20we're gonna treat this like adults and choose our top six.
- 8:23They would cut out so many episodes.
- 8:25Yeah. Yeah. Anyway. Well, maybe you're gonna feel just like, it had to be like 12 people, you know,
- 8:31dude. No, the Hintai Sentai will only take your top six. No, I'm not like 12 characters that they were like fighting,
- 8:37like 12 total in the competition. So 25, you know. It's so tough. It's so tough.
- 8:43Okay. And then there's an evil karate organization's working in the shadow.
- 8:47Okay. You can tell they're evil because they're Asian. It's like weirdly racist. I don't know. It's just,
- 8:52oh, why? Like the squirrel?
- 8:54He's like, yeah. Yeah. Okay. I wasn't even gonna go off like cover cover.
- 8:58I got rid of him. Okay.
- 8:59Speaking of going back to boring shows, I'm about to say something a little controversial.
- 9:04Yeah. And I will not spoil this show. Okay.
- 9:08Because I know you have not started season three. Season three of the bear is incredibly boring.
- 9:15Like I am, I saw them first too so far and he in thoughts who get through boring. Yeah. I can't.
- 9:23No, not the third season. Curls. It's so boring. And please, if anybody's watching this,
- 9:29they're like, no, it's artistic. I think it's reached new levels of like pretentiousness. I could see that.
- 9:36And they're trying to be artsy and deep, but it's just boring. It's just not hitting the way they want
- 9:46them to. No, there's just wandering, the andering conversations between characters that don't need
- 9:52to be happening. Yeah. And characters will pop up and you'll go, who is that again? Oh, I guess it's
- 9:57important. Okay. And no, we need to spend the next 15 minutes breaking down his childhood trauma.
- 10:03Okay. What's like, I don't know, it just, I'm the Christmas episode and the one where Sydney accidentally
- 10:11makes all those to go orders. Yeah. Like those are such good ups. And there's so much screaming.
- 10:17There's less screaming this season two, which I actually kind of bet. Okay. You don't know.
- 10:23Season three of the bear, please let me know if you have a very different one. You're in me. Yeah.
- 10:26Papa, but I am who I'm into here once I get there. I kind of took too much of the bear in, you know,
- 10:34I put myself in a bear food coma. You were, and I'm ready to go back. Yeah. You know, I was full on it.
- 10:39I'm ready to get back into it. You digest it. Yeah. To get through. Yeah. She's ready. Okay.
- 10:44Next on my list is show that I recently discovered that I've been bingeing that I'm really into.
- 10:51Where the actress is from, Cocoa Pia's at it. It's a show called School Spirits. It is a paramount plus
- 10:58original, but I've found it on Netflix. I'm not sure. That's possible. Somebody explained it to me.
- 11:03Maybe they created stuff. I don't know. Swapped pics. I think so. I think they might have swapped some
- 11:08pics. Yeah. Hey, who do you have? Who do you have? That's Sydney's called Spirits.
- 11:12And who do you have? I did. If you show me yours.
- 11:15Simea went and Peyton, uh, of Whitney Peyton. Shout out to Whitney Peyton. We love you. Peyton
- 11:21list is the actress in this show. Simea's on Peyton list content. Okay. So School Spirits is a show.
- 11:30It's one season long so far. They are quoting season two. And it's about a bunch of high school students.
- 11:35The main girl, Maddie, was murdered at her high school. And she wakes up as a ghost. I have heard
- 11:45about this. Yes. And she and a bunch of other ghosts who have died throughout the past 50 years.
- 11:50Is this really just children are there in the school? A lot. A lot. A lot. A lot. A lot. A lot. A lot.
- 11:56Yes. A Spestus in the Wallas. What's going on there? A peanut. When he wasn't surprised to. A
- 12:02bunch of kids died on like a school bay and marching trip. Buzz accident. Okay. Long girls like
- 12:07guidance counselor murdered her. We don't know at the point I'm in and season one. How Maddie was murdered.
- 12:13But she wakes up dead. I have heard this was good. I am really enjoying it. Okay. So it's got a great cast.
- 12:21Everybody has their place. She's got one group of friends who are all ghosts. So it's like the dead
- 12:26friends who are haunting the school. It's a dark comedy. Yeah. They all know how they died.
- 12:32Maddie doesn't know how she died, which is kind of unusual if I guess for a ghost. Do not remember.
- 12:37Or like not know yet. The exact. Yeah. So I'm sure the finale of season one will find out how she died.
- 12:44Maybe find her body because she can't they no one has found her body. And so she's going around the
- 12:49school and like kind of following her boyfriend around. She's just my. Yeah. And like he was cheating
- 12:55on her and like it's just all this scandal scandal and drama and I got a little misty eye in the
- 13:02her. He's got this own. Okay. Yeah. Sounds like I need to watch that. That sounds amazing. It's really
- 13:07funny and like reminds me of. I don't know like those kind of fluffy eyes on the S. Life's the
- 13:14female character and she's. I don't know powers that she's dead and she's watching her school. Yeah.
- 13:20Trying to solve real murder. I'm a believer that Spooky season starts right after 4th of July.
- 13:27So I literally was like do I put my home decorations out years or any hour because he had it.
- 13:32Spooky July party. I took them down a lot. I know. Well my office is always home. Yeah.
- 13:37And it's always for me. But I took down my house. Like I'm already I've already planned some
- 13:42spooky events at my apartment. Really? You can come. She's like it's with it's with the middle school
- 13:51friends. But we could also paint pumpkins because for some reason when I try to get a pumpkin and
- 14:02my body doesn't like it. I love painting pumpkins. Yeah. So I think that might have a Halloween party.
- 14:07If you want to eat something you should because then it'll be cool and I can stand the backyard.
- 14:13That's true. We could put down a cup for you and you could say there. Olivia's very allergic to my
- 14:16stuff. Yeah. And we've tried all the remedial symptoms. We haven't tried you sleeping in the yard.
- 14:23Yeah. We'll report back. Give me a drug and we might try to. I didn't even think about that though.
- 14:29Maybe I won't have one because I don't want you to be in this wrong issue. But I can say I'm longer.
- 14:34Okay. We'll talk about this later. We need something of our costumes too. Okay. The one final thing
- 14:42is Love Island that show. Oh my god. I have two final things. Love Island.
- 14:47Airdits reunion last night. It was screaming. It was incredible. I am officially obsessed with this
- 14:54show. I can't wait for the next season. Yeah. Summer. You have to watch it. So you're going to go back and
- 14:58watch some of the UK ones. I know. Now maybe hunt boring enough. I mean I have so much content. I'm
- 15:03shocked. Yeah. Right now. If you're a love island, girly message also to what seasons of the UK.
- 15:11To watch because apparently it's a good idea. UK is better than the US. This is the first season where the US
- 15:18has been good. Yeah. Do you know these people love Ariana Grande? Are you a continuing? Do you like
- 15:24the love Ariana Madden? I feel like she was hilarious. And from DPR and kind of brought that people
- 15:31wanted to make the show. So yeah. Successful. So and but yeah. I loved all of them on the show. I
- 15:37loved Kayla. Fuck Evan and Serena and Portell with his cheeses. I just I loved it all. So I'm going to
- 15:44pop love Island. And then finally I watched Alien Romulus, the newest Alien movie. Okay. And I'm
- 15:51going to pop that too. I really enjoyed it. It was like a good mix between like Prometheus,
- 15:56like those kind of newer more recent Alien movies, but then also like the older one. Lots of throwbacks,
- 16:02the original. I don't know. I really just like the Alien universe. And so I'm going to watch
- 16:07anything that comes out. Yeah. Okay. But yeah. So I would pop that. It's a good time.
- 16:12All right. There's facehuggers. There's chest bursters. There's the bar. There's the chest burst.
- 16:19Well, that sounds really bad. I'm done. I think I got through everything.
- 16:23So I've been on the opposite side of watching things. I have been keeping up with
- 16:32the Kardashians. Not really. What we did actually watch some episodes of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
- 16:39Yeah. A little teaser for upcoming episodes. Stay tuned. But no, I've been keeping up with all
- 16:44this Blake Live. We it ends with us. Drama. I can't stop watching it. Which for
- 16:50all I know what I think is the craziest thing is everyone like jumping to this Justin Baldone guy
- 16:59and to be fair, I know nothing about this and nothing. And Colleen Hoover is a very controversial
- 17:05author in general. She said on the road that the movie's going to be the end of the book. It ends
- 17:10with us. It was already very controversial for glamorizing like TV. Yeah. And so it was kind of like
- 17:17a curse project. But did you ever read it? No. No. I'm actually never going to call it a
- 17:23new bird. I've been told to stay away. My job is their fairy having sex. No. No. I'm out. I'm out. I'm out. So
- 17:30this rumor drama gets started and everyone on the cast. Justin Baldone is the director of the producer
- 17:37and the actor. And he's the main actor. And not a single one from the cast follows this man. He
- 17:44his own co-host isn't even like tagging him in things. And all of a sudden everyone was like it's
- 17:51like fault. But Justin Baldone is an advocate for less toxic. And I was like, any why? It was like
- 17:58this is why I say or men are weaponizing therapy. Yes. They really are. And like they got one therapy
- 18:04session and they're like, you're just lighting. Yeah. And I to be fair, like I think the way he is
- 18:11talking about the message of the movie is probably a little bit better than the way Black Lives Matter is.
- 18:15She just the way the people have jumped on hating Black Lives Matter. And like you can just admit that
- 18:22like you wish you had her hair. Like it's okay. She's not. Let's honestly know. Like whoa. Okay, first of all
- 18:29Deadpool vs Wolverine came out like a month ago and it smashed it. Everybody globally loves this movie.
- 18:36So we all love Ryan Reynolds and him and Blake Lively are kind of like a little package deal.
- 18:42They're so wildly in love when it's him who has a movie out. Then we're all like, oh my god, this is
- 18:47the cutest couple. Holly would look at her supporter man. And she has like a very small bit heart spoilers
- 18:55for Deadpool. Yeah, spoiler. And it's very. She's Lady Deadpool. Maybe she ever takes off her mask.
- 19:01Yeah, you hear her voice. Yeah. And then when she has a movie coming out, all of a sudden all of these
- 19:07seemingly like feminist websites like very Sue are digging up any article they can find that is
- 19:14anti Blake Lively in posting like 15 times a day. Yeah, he was crazy to me. I was like, first of all
- 19:19any guy who's like, I'm a nice guy. Not probably not a nice guy. Yeah, like if you have to say it,
- 19:25like you're probably not. No, no, absolutely. And yeah, it's been very, very interesting. I was like,
- 19:30well, every time I'm like, yeah, we're getting so far. I'm like, just kidding. No. And like, okay, I've
- 19:35heard the commentary that Ryan Reynolds got married to plantation, right? Yeah, that's problematic.
- 19:40Absolutely. Yeah. Why didn't we talk about that when Ryan Reynolds had movie? Yeah. Why is this coming
- 19:45back up in the news now that Blake Lively is? Yeah, I mean, it's so misogynistic. And obviously it's
- 19:51problematic. You married it. Funky plantation. Yeah, don't do it. Super topic. Yeah, to that.
- 19:57Exactly. They're wedding did cause Pinterest to no longer allow searching plantation. What are you
- 20:03really? So, you know, some interesting stuff. What else have I been obsessed with? Very
- 20:10demure, very mindful. See how I show up to the function. You would know, like you have been
- 20:16demure in our life. No, I could not stop saying it. I was in San Francisco this last weekend. And I
- 20:22went to a drug show and I just kept saying very demure, very mindful. See how we show up to the
- 20:28function and not like you other girl. I should not stop saying it is the opposite of demure mindful.
- 20:35It's just a cackling asshole. That's me. Yeah, basically this podcast. This podcast is the
- 20:42opposite of demure in my palm. Yeah. You want to listen to some shwale bitch? I love it. I love it.
- 20:50You said something about the Lacey Peterson documentary too. Yes. So as of
- 20:56when we're recording this, I have not yet watched the peacock documentary. So I'm going to say that
- 21:02first. But so basically there are two documentaries that are coming out. Netflix released it's
- 21:09Lacey Peterson documentary. I think last week it's a four part docuseries. If you're familiar with
- 21:16this story and if they had a lot of them never before seen footage and they talk to her friends, her
- 21:23family and it's a very like Lacey focused. The tragedy that happened. How and they don't even
- 21:30necessarily like take a stance on it. The police zeroed in on it. Scott too soon or whatever. They
- 21:37just say like, Oh, Scott started acting really. Yeah, he absolutely did. And if you're not familiar
- 21:42with the case, like watch the Netflix one. It's very, very good. I think I'm going to start in that one
- 21:47because I did pop up on my like for you. And that's very like a victim focus. And I think that's
- 21:53what all true crime should be. I totally agree. Let's center the victims instead of memorializing
- 21:58murderers. Yes. And unfortunately, Scott Peterson is now in the midst of a pill and is actually trying
- 22:07to get his conviction overturned or it was already overturned and they're retrying it. I can't
- 22:13remember this specific. He's been in prison since 96. It's in the house. So it's been a long time.
- 22:20And what's so sad is he like still refuses to admit that he did it. And so his family has made it
- 22:27like their wife mission to ultimately like exonerate. Yeah. And so they're kind of like stuck in this
- 22:35wheel and they're making it and all these things. So P.Cock is doing this documentary where they're
- 22:40interviewing Scott Peterson. And so Netflix release there's a head of time, which I'm really
- 22:45thankful for. I feel like that's an ADF. And so P.Cock comes out like as a record. And so next week,
- 22:55I'll give my thoughts on the P.Cock one. But it's it's just going to be really interesting. If you
- 23:01ever saw the A&E Scott Peterson documentary, they take a very like pro Scott Peterson. I've seen
- 23:10that one in years. I watched some special of something about it. It also murdered back in
- 23:17his or my cast. Yeah. Very familiar story. But that's what I've been in a true crime little hole lately.
- 23:27I'm like I'm at all. We it's so good for our mental. Yeah. Our collective depression.
- 23:34Our depression's lately. Yeah. Our depression's lately. And on that note, we'll take a quick break.
- 23:41It's a brat somewhere. Charlie XX is on repeat. Chop of a Rone is all you've been seeing on your
- 23:53Apple IP page. Billy Eilish has this new bedroom pop sound for her record. You can't stop saying
- 24:00no, there's a bugger. Like Sabrina Carpenter in that one song. There's a return to hyperpop that
- 24:06is giving so 2008. What else happened? 2008. Oh yeah. I went to college. Is that it? Yeah, that's
- 24:16all I could think of. It's kind of a blur that year. It's kind of a blur that's from our world.
- 24:20Most people know that as the great recession. Yeah, that's right. And the great housing crisis. That's true.
- 24:26And during that time, you might have heard things like poker face, teenage dreams, and I got a feeling
- 24:33on repeat. Great. So, junkies, we're here today to talk about if today's pop girlies were or are the
- 24:39indicators of an impending doom of a recession. Well, we're not economists. We are pop culture obsessed.
- 24:46And there's no doubt that during times of economic hardships as far back as the Great Depression,
- 24:52there have been noticeable trends towards more upbeat and escapist music. Throughout some of these
- 24:57times, we're going to talk about popular artists and really dive into the recessions we know best.
- 25:04But let's talk about some of the early ones. So the great depression took place from the great
- 25:10point for it. Is that why you shine this on your eyes? And it's like place from 1999 to 1939.
- 25:18Louis Armstrong was known for his influential jobs. Music. I'm going to do the old thing. I'm
- 25:24going to do the old thing. It's only to do the Great Depression. Oh, no, obviously. He's just the
- 25:28entire rest of the episode. Oh, my god. I don't know if I can do it. I'm strong. He's got
- 25:37beat to this provided a sense of joy and escape to the masses. Do Garling 10 was a key figure in
- 25:42this little wing era. His big band music was immensely popular. Billy Holiday. Well,
- 25:50her music off tonight. I'm a lot. I don't need men. Well, our music. I'm really good.
- 26:04She's so stupid. No, she's dumb. I'm not. Billy Holiday. Well, her music often had a sound tone.
- 26:16Song is like place from Evan. I've heard more up it. That's crazy.
- 26:21So much reaching to see a lot of happy music. Yeah, and after the Great Depression,
- 26:29a lot of everyone is talking like that too. Everybody is on like this. I'm great joy.
- 26:35How could he be sad? I'm going to talk and like this. My wife, but let out today. Wait, my wife can't
- 26:42get let off because she's not going to work. It's just learned her dying. Okay. We're there in the factories.
- 26:52All right. She'll learn her in the factory smoking cigarettes. Now I need to know what your name,
- 26:57your next one is. So we have the Great Depression. Now give me your next impression. I don't know
- 27:02if I can do it. How do people talk in the 70s? I just picture them really stone. I feel like
- 27:07I was 60s. I was going to talk more like the Brady Bunch. 1970s recession. She willikers. 1973 to 1975.
- 27:18The Bee Gees. Their transition to disco with hits like stay alive. Became very popular in the era.
- 27:26Donna Summers was known as the queen of disco. And her songs like Hot Stuff at Last Dance
- 27:34dominated the charts. Ava, the Swedish pop group, eight international famous songs like Dancing
- 27:41Queen and Mama Mia. So during this recession, we had again some of the most popular songs of the
- 27:49entire era that when you think of the 1970s, you probably think of stay alive. Yeah.
- 27:55Dancing Queen. That's very up. Yeah. I like her. Yes. And very fun and exciting beats.
- 28:03Now I don't know when 1980s were born. So it's beautiful as that was. I will not be over that. I
- 28:10don't know. I could go. So in the... I was going to have to have these exciting 80s. Okay, do go to the
- 28:20Fallon. And then we had in to the 1980s recession. So in the 1980 to 1982 recession, we had Michael
- 28:29Jackson, his album Thriller, begin the best-selling album of all time, providing a mix of pop, rock,
- 28:37and funk prints. But this innovative music albums like 1999 released in 1982. We became hugely
- 28:46popular. And then Madonna, emerging in the early 1980s, her dance pop hits like Holiday and like
- 28:54a virgin where major successes. So Madonna was birthed out of a recession. I don't know if I ever
- 29:01knew her. I didn't know that. Oh, Michael Jackson, it tricks on. Well, he was making music
- 29:06way before that. I mean, yeah, like especially Michael Jackson. Yeah. But this was when she became like,
- 29:12I think his star hit a whole new height when he became the solo artist. I guess. Yeah. And then we had
- 29:20into the 90s. And this is... I love it so much. We have been to the 90s. Yeah. Actually, we have bands like
- 29:31Nirvana, which has never mind who brought Grunge into this. They're kind of an outlier. And let's see,
- 29:39this isn't like quite the hyperpops happiness. This is kind of what I would want to listen to in her
- 29:44session. Yeah, right. Where they acknowledged the depression. So things started to change. But then we
- 29:49had Mariah Carey who did her powerful vocals and it single strings. I sound like I'm in the 70s.
- 29:58Yeah. I can't keep an accent for like a total two seconds. I sound like you're high. I don't
- 30:04know what you mean. I'm a perfect Christian woman. And then we also had Whitney Houston who was
- 30:15known for absolute thingers in pop music. But during this time, it was, I will always love you. She was
- 30:22also beginning her career. I just want to open up. I'm sorry. I hate. What's a good 2000 one voice?
- 30:35The dot com bubble of virus. 2001 show things like Eminem and his album The Marshal. I can't
- 30:42really say I can't do this. I was like, no, the Marshal happens to be in 2000 in the Eminem show in 2002.
- 30:49Critically claimed and very commercially successful. These are all going to be albums that I remember.
- 30:55Okay. Destiny's Child, the group led by Beyoncé had hits like Survivor and Blue D. Liches
- 31:02and then Rees Spears with Oops. I did it again and she just went on from there to continue to dominate
- 31:07the pop charts. But again, these are the hyper pop artists that are coming out in the dot com bubble
- 31:13burst or those music videos that were just so bright and sheer and yeah, just look over here. Yeah.
- 31:20Everything's fine. Look at the white colors. Yeah. And throughout time, you know, we're going to
- 31:26today talk about the resessions we know and grew up within. But throughout time, we we can actually
- 31:31look back to a few indicators. It's music. It's art that we're obsessed with. It's fashion that we're
- 31:38obsessed with. And so, you know, there's a lot of different arguments that people make. Is it music?
- 31:43Is it fashion? Is it all these things? We came in from a music perspective today just because we do
- 31:50kind of hear a lot of similar sounds that we heard in early, you know, 2007, 2008 speaking of Britney
- 31:57Spears, like the shaving of the head moment really does mark that time or session and like where we're
- 32:05at. But the gray recession, which made me feel really old writing that out. Is that is that
- 32:11these? That's when they call it a great recession of the guys that in eight. Yeah, the gray
- 32:15or sun I should just aged me typing it out. I am officially. Yeah. I heard just like my knees. And so,
- 32:22which started from December 2000, to June 2009. Great. Right now is entering the workforce. Yes.
- 32:30That's right. I was going to college. Everything was bleak. We were on the verge of an economic
- 32:37apocalypse for futures. It really shook up everything we thought we'd get out of studying,
- 32:42paying a lot of money to go to college for a better future. It started when the US housing bubble burst
- 32:48dragging down mortgage-backed securities and causing a financial mount down that one global.
- 32:53By the way, if you haven't ever seen the big shore, you should go watch this and are queen,
- 32:58my rubber in it. They do actually a really good job at explaining how this happened in an
- 33:04entertaining and educational way where you probably just are busy in mortgage-backed securities.
- 33:11And you're like, oh god, my eyes do it. Yeah, the mice go for it. Yeah, welcome to my job where
- 33:17make tax content all day. But if you've never seen that movie, do you have an amazing job at talking
- 33:23about how this all happened? How we're actually allowing this to happen again? But times were really
- 33:29ultimately bleak. Unemployment was so bad at one point. It was sorry to 10%. It was a really rough ride
- 33:36that left the lasting mark on everything from our bank accounts to culture, to the music that we
- 33:43listened to. Today. You trust. And so we're going to talk a long about what was in the zeitgeist
- 33:48during the great recession. So what artists came out during the great recession every time I say
- 33:55that another great year. You see them on, if you're on YouTube, another one. Another one. By the way,
- 34:01go follow us on YouTube. Yeah, follow us on YouTube. We're really cute. So Taylor Swift kind of
- 34:05emerged in this time 2008 with songs like Love Story and You Belong With Me. She was the top selling
- 34:10musical artist in 2008. And this was all going down with four million units sold. That's insane.
- 34:20And that was for a teenager. Yeah. The aunt say who we already mentioned. The Destiny's Child
- 34:26had a significant presence on the charts with single ladies. If I were a boy, Rihanna came out with
- 34:31dysterbia, take a bow, TI had whatever you like and live your life also with Rihanna. Such good music in 2008,
- 34:40right? Low Wains, the Carter Surrey came out in 2008. This is just deep reaching like peak
- 34:46music. Yeah. I think like 2008, 2010. Like it's just incredible. I guess I think back to like when I
- 34:54was in college listening to all these music and going to party music. The music. The music, the music,
- 34:59some might walk me down. Yeah. It's like going to all these parties and this isn't stuff that was
- 35:04playing. Yeah. It's so good. It does. Hey, little ball. It does feel like we're returning to that.
- 35:10A lot of artists we see today are that. No, what I also think is pretty interesting is the reality
- 35:16TV that we were obsessed with around that time. So American Idol was incredibly popular at that time.
- 35:23Kind of our first pair of social relationship. We had survivor, which was really, really popular.
- 35:29We had the real housewives of New York City. Finally. That's very swine. I think so. Yeah. I think so.
- 35:35We had real housewives of Atlanta, a spin-off come after that. And then we had wipe out come in.
- 35:42Which is I do love to watch wipe well when it's on everywhere. But it's literally just like a
- 35:48destruction like we said earlier, like stupid, silly little things where either we're looking at
- 35:54these ostentatious people with extreme displays of wealth or people putting themselves into
- 36:00ridiculous scenarios to get money. And do you think that all of this? I mean, I guess we
- 36:04could kind of say this for the end, but this is just ways to distract the public from what's
- 36:10really going on. Or do you think artists are consciously like people need something happy to
- 36:15listen to or to watch? Yeah, but about I think it's kind of a bit about. I mean, I don't think there's
- 36:23some overlord, but like what's going to sell better right now? Is it like people want to skip
- 36:29is that? Yeah, a lot of the time. Which I think art is just in general. And so I think in a hard
- 36:35times, people gravitate towards just like, well, let's pretend like that freaking imagined song.
- 36:42Do you remember whenever COVID started and all those like, oh, it's not like it's like that,
- 36:48like that's like the art that's what they had. I just imagine in their minds, I'm like, you know,
- 36:55I'm gonna put out a banger. Thank you for the banger. But also they heal. They're thinking that, you
- 37:00know, like it's going to be like that imagined moment. And if that was the song, they're way too
- 37:05over the top. Like, this is my fight song. Make me want to do violets to my song. Like,
- 37:12there is a fun. No, I hate roar. That was like other one. I hate it. So,
- 37:18if you were a band down so bad that you like plastic bag, you had to turn it on and you were just like,
- 37:25I'm gonna fight. Did you want to know why? It's because fight song and roar just give me
- 37:32Hillary Clinton losing flashbacks on this 16. So, like, anytime I hear that, I just think about weeping
- 37:40on my cram. It's so fun. I think one of it, one of the times I was probably in like the deepest of my
- 37:47whole dark dark depressions. I played that song on I should start playing that song just every day.
- 37:52Okay, moving on. I keep going. No, you should always me. Okay, 2009 pop song is
- 38:02my queen lady Gaga was the top artist to 2009 poker face in bad romance. She had a total of
- 38:091,734 points on the charts. I have no idea what that means. They were they were points. They were
- 38:16points. How many points do we have? Point. We have points. All right. We got a coin. We make a lot of
- 38:24good points. Yeah. The black eyed peas had major success with hits like Boop Boop, Pow and I got a
- 38:29feeling like Glee cat. No, that is a traumatizing. Oh, that's not me. I got a feeling. Again, a feeling.
- 38:36Yeah, every wedding, this like when all of your friends start getting married around like
- 38:432012 or so. Yeah. That song was just so beautiful. Yeah. The Glee cast. Got it. Were you
- 38:51actually? No. I worked in social services right out of college and all of my clients were obsessed
- 38:57with Glee. And I had a rule that they could put on whatever music they wanted when they were in
- 39:02my car. Oh, God. Does it just make them feel safe? Yeah. And so many of them wanted the album and the
- 39:07chipmunks soundtrack. Okay. And the Glee soundtrack. Well, it's a dark time. It was a dark time. Yeah.
- 39:16Michael Jackson following his death in June 2009. His music saw research and popularity,
- 39:22placing him among the top artists of the year again. And then Taylor Swift,
- 39:26college continuing her success from 2008 remained a top artist in 2009. Yeah, it's interesting to see
- 39:33throughout this like literally some similar artists like Michael Jackson in Beyond the Sessions,
- 39:40the Avionte, Taylor Swift. And then when I was researching this, how can I forget about
- 39:48this? The COVID-19 recession. Yeah. Which we all just remember as a global pandemic, but it also had
- 39:55crazy economic implications. Absolutely. As we all know. And Mike's still be doing with four years later.
- 40:01But I'll take you back to the year of 2020. We're all stuck on TikTok, listening to these
- 40:09addicting new songs that we saw people dancing to all while wearing masks. I think we weren't going to die.
- 40:14It was all right, but we saw the same trends in music. What's our artist? We had to do a leap. We had
- 40:20Dosa, the weekend, and then BTS kind of came into the popular reality. The top five songs of 2020
- 40:30were "Blinding Lights" by the Weekends, "Circles" by Post-Belone, The Box by Roddy Rich. Don't start now
- 40:38by our queen, Dua Liza. And then rock star by De Baby featuring Roddy Rich. I've never heard the
- 40:47box by Roddy Rich in my life. Yes. I would agree, but it says it was a viral sensation. Yeah. Maybe
- 40:54once we hear it. Well, no, I've got it. Maybe we're in the box. So we can hear the box, you know? I also
- 41:01remember that from Madoka by Lady Gaga came out during 2020. And oh my god, that album I think had
- 41:08gotten me through the pandemic. And that's still one of my favorite Gaga albums. But it was her return to
- 41:14Hyperpop gay pop dance hall. Yeah. With like Rain on Me and Stupid Love after Cho Wain and I was so.
- 41:23Yeah. And all I remember thinking with my friends is like, I cannot wait to go to the gay club. It
- 41:28danced to Rain on Me and we're allowed to go to the club again. Oh my god. I did a Zoom class with this
- 41:34like instructor from Equinox. Oh, I did a Zoom class. And a Zoom class was like to we learned
- 41:39the Rain on Me dance that he had and it was so good. It was so fun. At the only time I could do it was one
- 41:44it was covered and they were doing three instructional. It wasn't my being the building. So I'm too
- 41:52too poor for that one so bad. Air one day, one day. Yeah. No, I love it. But yeah, it's just that
- 41:59it was the distraction. And I think some of these artists knew. I mean, obviously you work
- 42:04in an album when you're in August for years. Prop you don't know there's going to be an international
- 42:10global pandemic. But in like God does kind of try to delay. I remember correctly putting out
- 42:16chromatic gun and eventually she was like, now y'all need this. Y'all need this. That's like a black
- 42:22mirror. The most recent season that came out was supposed to come out in like May 2020. And he
- 42:28was just like, I'm not releasing us. The world doesn't need this right now. Oh my god. And in Black
- 42:33Mirror, we did not. Yeah. That's why everyone was like, oh, this feels like kind of like three years
- 42:39ago because it was three years. Was it all filled? Yeah, it was like ready to release in 2020. And so we
- 42:45decided not to. But also I think like the reality TV that we were making popular in 2020 is interesting as well.
- 42:52Oh my gosh. Okay. So we had the masked singer. Tiger King. Oh my god. Everyone was obsessed with
- 42:59Tiger. Yeah. I was another like you co-alite coalition. Here's a coalition. It's coalition of
- 43:07tigers for characters. I was going to say when you think of 2020, you think of
- 43:11correlation. There it is. There you go. There's a couple of cool. And Tiger Kings.
- 43:17We're so dumb. We're making an argument that is a pretty serious recession. I like to
- 43:26coalition. Of course, a coalition of Tiger Kings. They're all wearing crowds. They're from the tigers.
- 43:32Lily, Tiger King, Love is Blind and RuPaul's Drag Race, which I definitely benched during Co-
- 43:42because it's happy and dramatic and over the top and colorful. And it may be not want to end things.
- 43:49And the bachelor. Yeah. And a lot of people. Yeah. Quite into. I think it's so interesting. So we have
- 43:55in 2008, American Idol and then the masked singer. Yeah. That's a good mic. But you know,
- 44:01Tiger King kind of like a slice of life. He would survive. Or like it does feel like similar things.
- 44:08Just kind of very like popping up where we either want to see people. You're starting. It's very
- 44:13odd situation. Yeah. Different from ourselves. You're starting to make me feel like we're living in
- 44:17a simulation. I'm not going to. I'm not sure I could keep it going. I'm like Olivia. We need
- 44:25on this. This episode is making me wildly uncomfortable. Do we make any of our own choices or does big
- 44:30entertainment make it? I mean, what are we? Like that's a really philosophical question. Like are we
- 44:36every interaction we've ever had summed up? Or like, you know, that squirrel?
- 44:42Just you know, I've watched too many like TikToks that relate to you. And you're like, this is so me.
- 44:48And by the end of it, you're like, what am I? Have I ever got a unique? Have I ever had a unique
- 44:53experience in my life? Let us try to explain simulation 32. In the same way that we've tried to
- 45:01explain to you economic music trends. I can use my old timey vibes. Yeah. I sure should bring it back
- 45:07for a good one. But I do think it is such an an interesting, you know, return to where we are today.
- 45:14A lot of people are looking at, you know, Charlie X, the X Sabrina Carpenter, Chapel Road,
- 45:20and they're saying, oh, this is like the good music that we had in the 2000. And they're like,
- 45:26there are some bad things that really did happen. So right now we have Taylor Swift breaking records.
- 45:32Again, she's in the league around. She's going after the Beatles right now. But then we have Billy
- 45:38Eilash who really did change her sound to be very upbeat. By the way, gas, remix with Billy Eilash.
- 45:46Oh, Charlie, it's been in my head for days. It's so good. And the music video is them firing shots.
- 45:52I Taylor Swift in the funniest way. And I need to watch. And as a Taylor Swift father, they do it so good.
- 45:59Every time I listen, I didn't work. I pulled this just from like collective data, but are going to
- 46:05Grande, do Alipa, and then Sabrina Carpenter, who is very known for like her silly like Espresso
- 46:12has no meaning songs, but they're just so catchy. And then our current reality TV show,
- 46:18Tram, they're even funnier. Exactly the same. But yeah, saying, mass singer, survivor,
- 46:24RuPaul's drag race, the bachelor, and then love Island, the one that I'm obsessed with.
- 46:29But do you think maybe some of these trends repeat themselves when it comes up in recession time?
- 46:34I mean, not that I think we're at a recession right now, right? Well, I could be trying to say
- 46:39that it could be coming. And we have had a crazy market crash in the last week or two.
- 46:45That's crazy. The ninth that I wrote the next day, the market crash. And you were like, and it was one
- 46:51of the worst days in market history. No, they completely halted trading. That's in Monday.
- 46:58Illinois says what they call it, but the day after that's insane. I was gonna say like maybe we're always
- 47:04reaching for the comfort of nostalgia during these times. And so because we get so stressed out
- 47:11and the pressures of life become too much, like we've joked about a lot in this episode. Like
- 47:15maybe the comfort of things that were in the past. Yeah. Is what makes us, and so we reached
- 47:21for things that make us feel that same feeling that we did. Like love Island creates the same
- 47:27serotonin in me that like flavor of love. Oh my god. Yes. And this gives me the same like this is
- 47:34nonsense. It's so worth the topic. Makes me feel those they feel like. Yeah. Okay. Maybe that's why
- 47:38I had some part of being reached for them. Okay. Yeah. Because really the next thing was like,
- 47:43why do you researchers and you know, psychologists and people think that we really look to this and
- 47:50find these patterns within human behavior during economic hardship. And a lot of it is
- 47:56escapism. Like we've talked about, you know, people gravitate towards music that is happy, especially when
- 48:02they're stressed or anxious. And then studies have shown that when unemployment rates are high,
- 48:09people want happy melodies as a way to really count our benignal and stuff. So that makes sense. And
- 48:16then there is this argument and this comes with all art, clothes, music, you know, everything. It's
- 48:22that is just a cycle. Oh my god. Yeah. 30 years. We like have we've never invented anything new.
- 48:28That is so interesting because if you remember like the fashion when we were in the 90s, it was all
- 48:34callbacks to 60s and 70s fashion. Yeah. All this I know isn't bell bottoms again. You know, I mean,
- 48:41I guess I was kind of like the early 2000s. Yeah. 90s. We were all wearing bell bottom jeans against
- 48:46my late faces and pea sides, yin yin and I remember my mom saying them and being like, oh, this stuff
- 48:53is called the 60s. Yeah. That's what I used to wear. Yeah. And then in the 70s, the peasant style,
- 48:58which is what they made. The seven really. Yeah. Exactly. And now it's 2024 and we're getting that
- 49:05Y2K fashion back again. It's all now. It's indy. So it is. And I literally cannot stop seeing
- 49:11fuck is indy. It's the late it's 2010 hipster tumbler, which is with their flat like their
- 49:18ripped tights and their flannels and their little hipster little brim. Like the um, yes,
- 49:25that's like an ass. Like an ass. That's coming back right now. Oh no. I got so much of that. Yes.
- 49:30I had saw my whole necklaces. Yeah. I actually do have like a very crazy like connection. I
- 49:38didn't know that's a thousand. So like indy. Yeah. And well, they call it indy sleaze now. That's
- 49:43how we got it when we know we were. It's. Yeah. Now it's indy. So he's like, it's very
- 49:49hot that American. You know, like, I'm going to go through. Yeah. It's very American apparel. And
- 49:54that's what's coming. And I felt like I started like I noticed the trend earlier in fashion,
- 50:00just because fashion trends are for women are noticeable and discussed a lot. Yeah. But the music
- 50:06really does come with that as well. And then ultimately like consumer behavior, like we want to
- 50:13see people getting things that we can get like the Kardashians also started in, you know,
- 50:202000. Yeah. And you know, like my super sweet 16 like Jeff, we came out when we were about to turn
- 50:2716 and we weren't going to have fucking birthday party. Yeah. And like, but for some reason,
- 50:32we wanted to watch other kids ever. Yeah. And it's so interesting to just like look at like, you
- 50:38would think we would be disgusted by that because of wealth disparity, but actually our brains
- 50:43like sure, because they'd have been like, Oh, no, we want that. If I work hard enough,
- 50:47yeah, just pick myself up from my bootstraps. I too could have a Mercedes for the first day. Yeah.
- 50:53Yeah. Well, you can't Rachel. Exactly. And ultimately it's important to know that these are
- 50:59correlations that we're drawing. It's not causing a, you know, don't go. Pop music does it cause
- 51:04the reset? Yeah. But don't don't don't go attack like a chopper, or a Sabrina, Sabrina,
- 51:10Carmen, or music trends are not just reliable indicators. But it can help us, you know, kind of
- 51:17determine like, that's all this really interesting thing when the stock market crash that they were
- 51:22saying, like, is McDonald's crashing? Like is there stock? It's just traditional like the
- 51:28Milly other day stable thing. Yeah. You can look at a lot of things like one of the funniest
- 51:33Alex this is that doesn't really get all I feel like I know what you're going to say about
- 51:37Florida hurricane is actually serious is if the waffle house is closed. That means that there's
- 51:43really a hurricane coming and like you should get out of town, but if the waffle houses are open,
- 51:48you stay open. Yeah. I see correlations between like the amount of
- 51:53hapsicles that are bought in a community that correlates with the amount of like serial killers
- 51:57that happens like, oh, yeah. And maybe it wasn't that's it. It was something about ice cream and like
- 52:03murder. Yeah. But it's like because more people buy ice cream when it's hot outside. And like,
- 52:08it doesn't even murder moral because they're angry. Yeah. Honestly, yeah. And so it's not because
- 52:12ice cream causes murder. Yeah. Right. Exactly. And so, you know, it's like, yeah, oh,
- 52:20ice cream is turning the murder. It's turning the frogs day.
- 52:25It's turning the frogs day. Do you hear them remix of that? Trying to freaking frogs. Yeah,
- 52:31it actually does. Yeah. On a big gay fraud. Dude, so gay fraud. Yeah. So living my life on a
- 52:38lily pad with you. Yes. One day. One day. One day. We'll react. He's being you talking shit.
- 52:47No, no, no, no, I'd be in gay fraud. I took that other frog over there. I said, you see which frog
- 52:53that he's loving, and the other. Yeah. You want to know, I bet your ribbit would be a most
- 52:59foul. Like you would just have like this, this stinky is a little. Yeah. Because you can't fart
- 53:08in that. Which you have to be real. I don't know if I'm saying that. I think you would just have like
- 53:17zero farty frogs. That would be so gassy. Yeah. This is too foul. I'm so sorry.
