- 0:00All right, today is joy, and you'll notice on
- 0:03our joy banner, our focus is on the magi, the
- 0:10joy of the magi. And I've just been enjoying
- 0:13their part of this story in the Bible, because
- 0:18their story is a story of worship. Their story
- 0:21is a story of joy. And so we read it at the beginning
- 0:26as Carter was lighting our Advent candle. But
- 0:31they were a group of people that were traveling,
- 0:34weren't they? They were travelers. And that's
- 0:38who we are. We are pilgrimage people. And so
- 0:41when I'm walking in the woods, I like to walk
- 0:45where there's trees and woods. And I usually,
- 0:48in those moments, I don't like to listen to things.
- 0:51I don't like to listen to podcasts or even music.
- 0:55I like it quiet and silent. I think it resets
- 0:59my brain and my spirit. But I've discovered every
- 1:03once in a while. The Walking Song. Who were the
- 1:08pre -Hobbit people? Who were they called? I know
- 1:12you all don't know. You're not a nerdy bunch,
- 1:15and Rachel's not here. She's my only other, like,
- 1:19real Lord of the Rings nerd. And so the people
- 1:24before they became Hobbits that settled, they
- 1:26were a wandering people. Harfoots. Thank you.
- 1:32Thank you, Charlene. And they were like a nomadic
- 1:42people. And so whenever they were, oh, there
- 1:45she is, Rachel. We're just talking about the
- 1:48rings of power. Whenever they were traveling,
- 1:52they would have walking songs that they would
- 1:55sing. And so one day I was walking through the
- 1:59woods, and I just had it in me, I need to listen
- 2:02to this wandering song. And so I began to play
- 2:06it. It was actually the Sunday that I took off
- 2:09and said, I'm leaving you all and I'm going for
- 2:11a hike in the woods. And I began to listen to
- 2:14this song as I was hiking through the woods and
- 2:17just felt the presence of the Lord. And it just
- 2:20simply says, I trade all I've known for the unknown
- 2:25ahead. Call to me, call to me, lands far away.
- 2:29If I had a voice, I would sing it for you. Of
- 2:32drink I have little, in food I have less. My
- 2:36strength tells me no, but the path demands yes.
- 2:42My legs are so short and the way is so long.
- 2:46I've no rest nor comfort, nor comfort but song.
- 2:51Sing to me, sing to me lands far away. Oh, rise
- 2:56up and guide me this wandering day. My friend,
- 3:00we have a land far away calling to us here today.
- 3:04We are a pilgrimage people. This is not our final
- 3:11home. There is a land that calls to us today.
- 3:16There is a path that we are on that demands our
- 3:21yes. And as I was listening to that, it was just
- 3:25resonating. My eternal home, it was like I could
- 3:28just hear it. Even as I'm saying it, I can feel
- 3:31it. Hearing it call to me. Come on, Cammie. We're
- 3:36waiting for you. We're waiting for you. Stay
- 3:39on this path. And when I hear the call, I can't
- 3:43help but, yes, I got to go. I got to go. Right?
- 3:49We are traveling. ever toward our home and so
- 3:55my question is what or who is guiding you on
- 4:01your journey today we're celebrating the advent
- 4:05week of joy and in that we are following this
- 4:10company of travelers the magi who are on this
- 4:14journey of joyful worship it was a journey marked
- 4:20by joyful worship. And so before we talk about
- 4:24their journey, I want you to envision for a moment
- 4:27a tale of two kingdoms. I want you to take for
- 4:32a moment and just imagine. I think God gives
- 4:34us imaginations, and sometimes we just need to
- 4:36stop and use our imagination. And so I want you
- 4:39just to imagine for a moment the kingdom of darkness.
- 4:44Some of you, that might be a very real, you don't
- 4:46need to imagine anything. What you came out of
- 4:48was just very real. But this kingdom of darkness
- 4:53that's characterized by sin, by evil, by lies,
- 5:00by misery and chaos, a waste of purpose, death,
- 5:09hatred. Spiritual bondage. It's a real kingdom.
- 5:21Right? We've seen it portrayed in all kinds of
- 5:24movies, good and evil. And even now, in your
- 5:28imagination, you might be imagining a scene that
- 5:30you've seen that really replicates what that
- 5:33kingdom of darkness looks like. It's a real kingdom,
- 5:38though. It's not a fictional place. The kingdom
- 5:41of darkness is real. And it operates in deception
- 5:46and fear and rebellion. The tale of two kingdoms,
- 5:54the kingdom of darkness and in opposition, the
- 5:58kingdom of light. And it's such a contrast between
- 6:03the two kingdoms, isn't it? The kingdom of light,
- 6:08which is characterized by goodness and peace,
- 6:12eternal life, divine purpose, righteousness,
- 6:20joy. It's in such opposition to the kingdom of
- 6:26darkness. It operates in truth and freedom and
- 6:30love. Which kingdom would you choose in a tale
- 6:35of two kingdoms? Right? I love, and Darren made
- 6:40me years ago a porch swing, and he had engraved
- 6:44on the top of it this verse out of Romans 14.
- 6:49For the kingdom of God is righteousness, peace,
- 6:52and joy in the Holy Spirit. This kingdom that
- 6:59we are a part of should be a kingdom of joy.
- 7:04And we're not talking today about an emotion.
- 7:08So often we come into this thinking it has something
- 7:11to do with our emotions, and it doesn't. However,
- 7:16I want to read to you this. It was a study based
- 7:20in Britain. And here's what they found, that
- 7:24people older than 52, raise your hands. I'm not
- 7:27there yet. I'm just turning 51, so I get to keep
- 7:30my hand down. I think it shouldn't yours be up.
- 7:34You're awfully. Okay, let me see them again.
- 7:37You're over 52. Okay, here's your statistic.
- 7:43Just barely. Doesn't matter. You're over. You're
- 7:45over. People older, until I turn 52, and then
- 7:51it'll be a different story. People older than
- 7:5452 tend to be grumpier than younger people. Linda's
- 8:06the exception. People, man, oh, the 52 -year
- 8:11-olds are all rising up. I'm definitely not going
- 8:16to the seniors group this week. Hey, I didn't
- 8:21say this. The study said it. Okay, 52 tend to
- 8:26be grumpier than younger people. The poll results
- 8:30found that those over 50, so I'm in this group,
- 8:35laughed far less and complained far more than
- 8:42people under 50. You laugh less, you complain
- 8:46more. I can tell you're all loving this study.
- 8:56The study found, now listen, it's going to get
- 8:59interesting. The average number of laughs per
- 9:03day, now I've helped you with this today, so
- 9:06here you go. The laughs per day declines as a
- 9:11person ages. Infants, we've got an infant in
- 9:16the room today. Infants generally laughed up
- 9:21to 300 times per day. An infant will laugh up
- 9:27to 300 times per day. While teenagers laugh an
- 9:33average of six times a day. Hey, it just gets
- 9:41worse from here. Don't be judging them because
- 9:45it's getting worse for us. By the time a person
- 9:49reaches the age of 60, the laughs per day had
- 9:54declined to only 2 .5. Are we talking about being
- 10:06a greeter at the Walmart door, Jill? Listen,
- 10:14here's the takeaway. An infant laughs up to 300
- 10:19times per day. I believe that we were created
- 10:23with the capacity for great joy. And we have
- 10:29let life and circumstances drain that capacity,
- 10:36narrow that capacity down. And I believe as kingdom
- 10:41people, And I know, and I believe this is why
- 10:45some of you are like, no way, no way, because
- 10:47we're kingdom people. And as kingdom people,
- 10:51what does it say about our youth in Isaiah? It
- 10:55gets renewed. I believe that we can begin to
- 10:59laugh again as kingdom people, right? As our
- 11:03youth is renewed, our capacity is restored to
- 11:07laugh and to be containers of joy of the Lord.
- 11:11And so today, I just want to say, let's increase
- 11:14our capacity for joy. Let's increase and not
- 11:18be a part of this world statistics and say, we
- 11:22want to be a people that look a little different,
- 11:25that are marked by joy. And so today's text,
- 11:29we read a bit of it before, but I want us to
- 11:31focus in on Matthew chapter 1, verses 10 and
- 11:3511. They had been traveling, the magi, they had
- 11:39been traveling looking for this child. And finally,
- 11:44after their travels, it says they saw the star
- 11:50and they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
- 11:58Not just joy, not just great joy, exceedingly
- 12:04great joy. Why? They've been following the star
- 12:09all along. They had seen the star all along.
- 12:12But there came the moment when the star stopped
- 12:16and marked the presence. And as it marked the
- 12:24presence, the response that arose up within the
- 12:28Magi was that of exceedingly great joy. And when
- 12:35they had come into the house, they saw the young
- 12:39child with Mary, his mother, and fell down and
- 12:43worshipped him. These great, distinguished, educated
- 12:47astronomers. They fell down at this child's feet
- 12:56and worshipped. And then they opened their treasures
- 13:00and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense,
- 13:03and myrrh. Back in the 80s, there was a very
- 13:07popular definition of joy, which some of you
- 13:10probably remember. And it has stuck with me.
- 13:13It used to be, I think, in the women's bathroom
- 13:16of Faith Church when I was growing up in Washington.
- 13:22And it was simply this. Here is a very simplified
- 13:26definition of joy. Jesus, others, and you. Right?
- 13:35In that order. J -O -Y. Jesus, others, and you.
- 13:43Would you like to come and sing it for us, Jesse?
- 13:46You can sing that to jingle bells, I hear. This
- 13:50might be a good bingo night rendition for us
- 13:53tonight. You're going to get it stuck forever
- 13:57in your head. Jesus, others, you. And that might
- 14:01seem like that's so 20 years ago. I guess I'm
- 14:04older than that. 40 years ago. 40 years ago.
- 14:11But there is truth in it. In this alignment,
- 14:15there is joy. And so I want us for a moment to
- 14:19walk through this. And it begins with Jesus,
- 14:22his presence. The joy of his presence. And this
- 14:30kind of joy is not anything that is self -generated.
- 14:35I am not the originator of joy in my life. I
- 14:40am not the source of joy in my life. There is
- 14:44only one giver of joy, and it is Jesus. The magi,
- 14:52exceedingly great joy, came to them as they observed
- 14:57the star marking the place of his presence. There
- 15:02is something about a life that has been marked
- 15:05by his presence. It is a life that is marked
- 15:12by joy. I want to walk through a few examples
- 15:17of this because we hear and we even sang it today.
- 15:21The joy of the Lord is my strength and that sounds
- 15:24so good. But man, how do you walk in that? What
- 15:29does that mean when everything around me just
- 15:33is kind of stinky? Let me just give you a little
- 15:38bit of inspiration. For what that can look like.
- 15:42You've heard me talk about him before. But I
- 15:45can't talk about joy in our daily life without
- 15:48talking about Brother Lawrence. A 1700 monk who
- 15:53didn't just pray in a chapel. He prayed while
- 15:56peeling potatoes. He was the chef of the monastery.
- 16:01And day in and day out. And it wasn't like today.
- 16:05He didn't have KitchenAid, beautiful mixer that
- 16:08I have, two of them, praise the Lord. He didn't
- 16:11have a microwave. He didn't have a gas stove
- 16:15to flick on. He had to go chop the wood to bring
- 16:19it in and start the fires, right? And so it was
- 16:25this kind of life, the day in and day out monotony.
- 16:31He didn't worship just during services. He worshiped
- 16:34while he scrubbed pans. And here's the key. Here's
- 16:38what he said, Brother Lawrence. There was no
- 16:41difference to him between the time he spent doing
- 16:47business in life, between the time in the soapy
- 16:53water, that was his business, and the peeling
- 16:56of potatoes. There was no difference from that
- 17:00to when he was on his knees in prayer. It was
- 17:03all the same to him. He lived life marked by
- 17:07the presence of God. God was in both places.
- 17:12Susanna Wesley, she was one of my heroes as I
- 17:16was raising my children, mother of John and Charles
- 17:19Wesley, two of the most influential leaders in
- 17:22church history, wrote many hymns. She had 19
- 17:27children. This being in the chaos of 18th century
- 17:34life. No tablets for her so that she could have
- 17:38quiet time. No dishwashers, no air conditioning,
- 17:45no Walmart grocery pickups. Here's what she did.
- 17:51She would sit down in her kitchen. she would
- 17:54throw her apron over her head and pray. That
- 17:59apron became a holy place. It was her tent of
- 18:03meeting. Everyone, every child in the house knew
- 18:09when Mama's got her apron over her head, you
- 18:12don't bother her. She's talking to Jesus, and
- 18:17she did that every day, often up to two hours.
- 18:22Not in a cathedral, not on a retreat, not on
- 18:26a mom's night out, but in the middle of the clatter,
- 18:30the crying, and the chores of 19 kids. She made
- 18:35space. She had been marked by the presence of
- 18:38God. In the early church, in the early centuries
- 18:43of the church, before Christianity was legalized,
- 18:46following Jesus was dangerous. It is around the
- 18:50world today. Eyewitnesses recorded stories of
- 18:55Christians led into Roman arenas to be executed.
- 18:59And instead of cursing their fate, they sang
- 19:03hymns. Not dirges, not laments. They sang songs
- 19:11of joy. One of the most well -documented examples
- 19:16was that of Perpetua and Felicitas, two young
- 19:20women imprisoned in North Africa in 2003. Or
- 19:24203, sorry. On the day of their execution, they
- 19:29marched into the arena in dignity and sang. And
- 19:34here's what shook the Roman world. The people
- 19:38didn't just see martyrs die, they saw them die
- 19:40singing, and many came to faith because of that.
- 19:45They were singing songs of joy. The underground
- 19:49church in China, one young woman had been imprisoned
- 19:52for her faith and said, he was with me in the
- 19:56cell, I was never alone. And I'm so happy to
- 20:01be with him again in worship. Jonathan Edwards,
- 20:05known to be a preacher of great conviction, of
- 20:10gravity. You may have heard of his sermon, famous
- 20:14sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.
- 20:20It was reported that as the one local farmer
- 20:24wrote, as they were walking home under the stars
- 20:27following the service, they did not speak. For
- 20:32the joy was too heavy for words. Jerusha, his
- 20:39daughter, sitting in silence after a service,
- 20:42her heart so full of joy, she feared it would
- 20:46burst. For you sports fans, Reggie White, NFL.
- 20:54He once said, I believe the joy that comes from
- 20:56being with God is better than any victory I've
- 21:00had on the field. He was known for encouraging
- 21:04teammates, smiling during games, and carrying
- 21:07himself with peace and confidence that didn't
- 21:10come from stats or contracts, but knowing he
- 21:13was walking with God. Richard Warmbrand. a Romanian
- 21:18pastor in the communist takeover in the 20th
- 21:21century. For preaching the gospel, was arrested
- 21:23and spent 14 years in prison, much of it in solitary
- 21:27confinement. Tortured, starved, and forbidden
- 21:31to speak the name of Jesus. And he wrote about
- 21:34his time in prison. He began to move into a place
- 21:40of such joy that he said, I have danced for joy
- 21:44in the cell. where I was kept for three years.
- 21:49No music, no light, no Bible. He just danced
- 21:53for joy in the presence of the Lord in that cell.
- 21:58This man went on to found, you may have heard
- 22:01of it, the voice of the martyrs, telling the
- 22:05stories of believers worldwide. Listen, Psalm
- 22:101611 says it. It is in your presence that there
- 22:15is fullness of joy. It is not for the ideal times.
- 22:21These are just a few examples. You could go on
- 22:25all day. It has nothing to do with your circumstances.
- 22:29It has everything to do with his presence. And
- 22:34I find it interesting that in neuroscience, we
- 22:37have this thing called mirror neurons. And so
- 22:43in your brain, there are parts that are fired
- 22:47not just when you do something, but when you
- 22:51see someone else do it. So it's why you see somebody
- 22:55stub their toe and you wince, right? You watch
- 22:59a sappy Hallmark movie and you start crying.
- 23:04Not because of anything that's happening to you.
- 23:06You didn't meet the man in flannel and give up
- 23:08everything to go live on his farm. But you're
- 23:11crying. Gotta love a guy in flannel. That's why
- 23:25you wore that today, isn't it? Your brain mirrors
- 23:32what it sees. So in a sense, we're wired, literally
- 23:41wired for connection. And so when you are literally
- 23:48feeling other people's experience in your own
- 23:51bodies, when you are around a calm person, you'll
- 23:54become calm. When you're around someone joyful,
- 23:59you will begin to be joyful. So let's think about
- 24:04that now on a spiritual level. What happens when
- 24:09you spend time in the presence of the creator
- 24:13of the universe? What happens when you spend
- 24:18time with our perfect, loving, joyful father?
- 24:23You are literally wired to begin to... reflect,
- 24:27and mirror him. You are wired to emotionally
- 24:33respond to the people we're with, and so spending
- 24:37time in the presence of God should awaken joy
- 24:42in us. He is joy, and we can't spend time with
- 24:48him and not begin to experience joy. your brain
- 24:55begins to be fired up and responds. It's not
- 25:00a forced happiness. It's not an artificial cheer,
- 25:04but it's a real soul -deep joy that mirrors the
- 25:10heart of the Father. You were created for that.
- 25:15And so joy doesn't come from your circumstance.
- 25:18It doesn't come from you. It comes as you spend
- 25:22time in the presence of our Lord. And so it matters
- 25:30not what's going on. He is with you. He's with
- 25:33you in the dark places and the broken places.
- 25:35He is available to you at all times. And so as
- 25:41you engage with the Father, joy. awakened. And
- 25:45so we begin, always, always, the starting point
- 25:49is joy comes from Jesus. Now, some of us like
- 25:55to just have the joy of others. Some of us think
- 25:59we can have just the joy with Jesus and we don't
- 26:01have to bother with the others. But the truth
- 26:04is, is that there is joy in community. You were
- 26:08created. The term magi is not a singular term.
- 26:14It is a plural term. This was a group of men
- 26:19traveling together. They were a company of men
- 26:24on a mission together. We were meant to do it
- 26:30together. A diary was found in the home of an
- 26:35elderly lady. who had passed away. The same line
- 26:40was found for every day for the last years of
- 26:43her life. Each day she had written down, no one
- 26:46visited, no one called, no one cared. We were
- 26:52designed to have others in our life. We were
- 26:57designed to be in community. In fact, in the
- 27:02words of Hebrews chapter 10, Verse 24, he says,
- 27:07and let us consider how we may spur one another
- 27:09on toward love and good deeds, not giving up
- 27:14meeting together as some are in the habit of
- 27:18doing, but encouraging one another. And all the
- 27:22more as you see the day approaching, the closer
- 27:25we get in our journey toward eternity, the more
- 27:29we need one another. And so how we interact as
- 27:37a community is important. We just read what Hebrews
- 27:41said. Let me put it in a way that will get this
- 27:44in your mind and you'll leave here with this
- 27:45stuck in your brain. It's been in mine all morning.
- 27:48In the words of Willie Nelson, you were always
- 27:51on my mind. Maybe I didn't love you. Would you
- 27:58like to come sing it, Darren? Maybe I didn't
- 28:03love you quite as often as I could have. And
- 28:08maybe I didn't treat you quite as good as I should
- 28:11have. If I made you feel second best, I'm sorry
- 28:16I was blind. You were always on my mind. And
- 28:22maybe I didn't hold you all those lonely, lonely
- 28:24times. I guess I never told you I'm so happy
- 28:28you're mine. Little things I should have said
- 28:32and done. I just never took the time. But you
- 28:36were always on my mind. See, I wanted you to
- 28:40get this stuck to remind you, as it goes through
- 28:44your head this week, the little things matter
- 28:48with one another. A quick text to somebody. Hey,
- 28:56I missed you today. What does this let us know?
- 29:00We are seen. We are seen. We are known by our
- 29:05community. I love that Paul wrote to the church
- 29:13of Thessalonica, for what is our hope and our
- 29:16joy, the crown in which we glory, and the presence
- 29:20of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you?
- 29:23He's saying this to the church. You. Our joy.
- 29:29Indeed, you are our glory and joy. You often
- 29:38hear us talking about community here and the
- 29:41need for the community of Christ. I think, though,
- 29:45that one doesn't really believe that until one
- 29:49really engages with that. And you suddenly realize,
- 29:53wow. I need these people, and these people need
- 29:58me. We need one another. It's part of the joy
- 30:03we were created for. The Trinity, the Father,
- 30:08the Son, and the Holy Spirit had wonderful communion
- 30:11with one another, relationship with one another.
- 30:14But they wanted others brought into that. We
- 30:18were brought into that. And so God himself was
- 30:24set up himself for community. We are the image
- 30:29of our father, and so also we need community.
- 30:35A story comes to us of long ago of a king who
- 30:40organized a great race within his kingdom. All
- 30:44the young men of the kingdom participated, and
- 30:46a bag of gold was to be given to the winner.
- 30:49The finish line was within the courtyard of the
- 30:52king's palace. The race was run. The runners
- 30:56were surprised to find in the middle of the road
- 30:58leading to the king's palace a great pile of
- 31:02rocks and stones. But they managed to scramble
- 31:06over it or to run around it and come to the courtyard.
- 31:09Finally, all the runners had crossed the finish
- 31:12line except one. But still the king did not call
- 31:17the race off, and after a while one lone runner
- 31:20came through the gate. He lifted a bleeding hand
- 31:23and said, O king, I am sorry that I am so late,
- 31:28but you see I found a pile of rocks and stones,
- 31:33and it took me a while, and I wounded myself
- 31:38in removing them. Then he lifted the other hand,
- 31:44and in it was a bag. He said, but great king,
- 31:48I found beneath the pile of rocks this bag of
- 31:51gold. The king said, my son, you have won the
- 31:55race. For the one runs best, who makes the way
- 32:00safer for those who follow. We weren't meant
- 32:06to make a wild dash toward our eternal home by
- 32:10ourselves. As we read in Hebrews, we were called
- 32:14to say, come on, let's go and do this together.
- 32:18I'm going to kind of wade back here and catch
- 32:21this person that's kind of having trouble, and
- 32:24I'm going to help them along. There's joy in
- 32:28the others. And what you begin to find when you
- 32:32engage in the others, in the community, is the
- 32:36treasure. The treasure that God has for us and
- 32:41the one another. And so there's joy in the community.
- 32:47So there's joy in Jesus, joy in community and
- 32:52others. And finally, there's joy in you. And
- 32:57Darren said it, didn't he, earlier. Sometimes
- 32:59we have a hard time believing that God would
- 33:03desire us. That God would care about my worship.
- 33:09But the Magi, what did they do? Then they began
- 33:15to open up their treasures and lay them at the
- 33:17feet of Jesus. Listen, they traveled together.
- 33:21They got to the presence together. But there
- 33:25came a moment when they each had to bring their
- 33:29own gift and lay it at the feet of Jesus. The
- 33:34truth is, as much as we need others, nobody else
- 33:37can stand in for you. Nobody else will stand
- 33:40in the judgment seat, before the judgment seat.
- 33:43It's just us and him, individually, right? And
- 33:49so it matters. You matter to him. And we live
- 33:55in this time. They traveled together, the Magi,
- 33:58but in the end, they brought their own worship.
- 34:00And we live in this. We say this term often because
- 34:05I think it's an interesting one. An upside down
- 34:08kingdom. It doesn't make sense to this world.
- 34:11Because in this world we're all about self -care,
- 34:14right? Putting self first to take care of self.
- 34:19When John 15, what does it do? It calls us. It
- 34:23says no greater love has anyone than this that
- 34:27they lay down their life for their friends. And
- 34:31so. In the end, here's the power of joy, is that
- 34:36this circles back around to his presence. Because
- 34:43it begins and ends with his presence in your
- 34:47life. Self -care begins with your relationship
- 34:54with Christ. So here's what I want us to do.
- 35:01We are in this Advent season. I love Advent because
- 35:08it makes a lot of space for us. It kind of forces
- 35:12space into what can be a very crazy, chaotic
- 35:16time. But my prayer for you in this Advent season
- 35:23is that it would be a time for you to re -engage
- 35:26with his presence. That it would be a time that
- 35:34remembering that like the Magi, we're on a worship
- 35:37journey. We're looking for something else, something
- 35:41to come, the lands that are calling to us. Come
- 35:45on, the path is demanding our yes. We're on this
- 35:54worship journey that can only be a worship journey
- 35:56if his presence. has marked our life. And so
- 36:04as the team comes back up, I want to just conclude
- 36:08by this reminder that we are a pilgrim people.
- 36:14And Psalm 84, more and more and more, has become
- 36:17a life verse for me. Blessed is the man whose
- 36:21strength is in you, whose heart is set on pilgrimage.
- 36:29Can I just ask the question, what is your heart
- 36:32set on today? Is it set on this life? Or is your
- 36:37heart set on the pilgrimage from where we're
- 36:40going, our eternal home? It's up to us. We get
- 36:45the power to set things in our life. Whose heart
- 36:51is set on pilgrimage? And we refer to Nehemiah
- 36:558 .10 that said that the joy of the Lord is your
- 36:58strength. And so when I take that and I go back
- 37:02to Psalm 84, the man whose strength is in you,
- 37:06I'm convinced that it is joy, the joy of the
- 37:12Lord, that is what gives you what you need for
- 37:16your pilgrimage. That without it, you will lose
- 37:21heart. And when you lose heart, you will step
- 37:26off the path. You will disengage from the journey
- 37:33toward the Lord. And so today what we want to
- 37:38do is we want to re -engage with his presence
- 37:42in joy. Maybe, I know we laughed about it earlier,
- 37:48maybe you found yourself grumbling a little more.
- 37:52laughing a little less. Today, I want to encourage
- 37:56you to make the choice to be a person marked
- 38:02by the presence and the joy of the presence,
- 38:05that you are going to be a kingdom person, marked
- 38:09by presence, marked by joy. And you're not going
- 38:15to let this world determine your joy level. You're
- 38:19going to, in the presence, You're going to let
- 38:23him determine your joy level. Amen? And so it's
- 38:29nothing that is belittling your pain, nothing
- 38:33that is belittling the struggle for where you're
- 38:36at. That is real, and joy is not saying that
- 38:40that is not real. Joy is saying it's in those
- 38:43places that joy of the Lord becomes a very real
- 38:50reality. Right? Nothing else makes sense that
- 38:56I have this joy. I know it doesn't come from
- 39:01the circumstance, because all I know is pain
- 39:05and sorrow. But there's this abiding thing in
- 39:09me, and it just gives me the strength to keep
- 39:12going, to keep walking, and to not stop. It's
- 39:17the joy of his presence. And sometimes we just
- 39:22need to stop, stop bemoaning the pain, right?
- 39:26We need to stop grumbling about the circumstance.
- 39:30We just need to lean in and let the joy of the
- 39:33Father. We need to start to mirror. Let those
- 39:38neurons in your brain get fired up by His joy,
- 39:43renewing your strength. Amen? And so here's what
- 39:49we're going to do today. I've asked the team,
- 39:52I just want us, that the altar response is going
- 39:56to be as we just stand and we begin to celebrate
- 39:59in joy. And as we do that, this is, remember,
- 40:03nothing to do with your emotions. This is rejoicing
- 40:07in the presence of God. This is rejoicing that
- 40:10we're doing it with one another in community,
- 40:13right? This is the joy of knowing that the God
- 40:17of the universe sees you and takes joy in you.
- 40:21And we want to reflect back joy to him. And so
- 40:25this morning we're going to stand and we're going
- 40:27to conclude our service time with a song of rejoicing,
- 40:31a song of praise. And in a way, you're going
- 40:34to have to disengage yourself a bit from your
- 40:38circumstance. In a way, I need you to kind of
- 40:41let loose your footwear. You got to kind of get
- 40:45some lightness to your feet so that you can rise
- 40:50up to where God is. and his great presence full
- 40:54of joy. Amen? And so as the team leads us, this
- 40:58is your declaration that I'm going to be a person
- 41:01of joy. I'm going to be a kingdom -minded person.
- 41:04I'm going to be a person marked by the presence
- 41:07of the almighty God. Amen? So let's just worship
- 41:11in joy for a few more moments.
