- 0:00A single writing assignment surfaced a 10 year old memory
- 0:03and cracked it open. There's a story behind that.
- 0:08This is your daily message from Chademur 12118 to upgrade your
- 0:11mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:14Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:16yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:18Stephanie Sheris. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:22A moment of kindness can sit unopened for years, but upgraded
- 0:25thinking knows it was still delivered.
- 0:27Here's the story. When Rika Masuda was seven, she
- 0:31got a new bike. It was faster than her old one,
- 0:34and at the park she headed straight for a wall because the
- 0:36brakes didn't work. She crashed, bruising and
- 0:38scraping her foot. A man in a suit walked over.
- 0:42He was tall and strong, she remembers, and at first she
- 0:45didn't know whether to trust him.
- 0:46Then he asked, Are you OK? His voice was kind and gentle,
- 0:50and that settled it. He washed the cut at a water
- 0:52fountain. He let her use his phone to call
- 0:55her grandfather, and while they waited, he pulled out a sheet of
- 0:58white paper and taught her to fold an origami crane.
- 1:01He folded it cleanly and carefully, and Rica later
- 1:04guessed he wanted her thinking about the paper instead of her
- 1:06foot. When her grandfather arrived,
- 1:09the man helped get her in the bike home and at the party.
- 1:12He handed her the crane without a word and walked away.
- 1:15She never saw him again. She put the crane in her desk.
- 1:18For 10 years, she never unfolded it.
- 1:21Then, at 17, her high school English teacher, Benjamin
- 1:24Johnson, assigned a story about a Good Samaritan encounter.
- 1:29Rica thought of the man in the suit.
- 1:31She went home, sat down and unfolded the crane.
- 1:34Inside was a well known Japanese expression that means to
- 1:38treasure moments because they may never happen again.
- 1:42A stranger left a note where he knew someone would eventually
- 1:45look and he didn't need to see the result.
- 1:50Reflection is a technology. It works like a tool, and most
- 1:54of us never pick it up. The better story to tell
- 1:57yourself is reflecting on a past.
- 2:00Kindness can open a beautiful lesson.
- 2:03Plant a seed on someone else's schedule.
- 2:06The harvest is rarely on your calendar.
- 2:09Say the right thing once, then trust the timing.
- 2:12An act of kindness and a tangible gift can make a more
- 2:15lasting lesson than a lecture. He didn't explain coping to A7
- 2:20year old. He folded paper with her and the
- 2:22lesson traveled inside. Something beautiful.
- 2:25And people can hold beautiful things a lot more easily than
- 2:29they can hold a speech. Tell me a story of a moment you
- 2:33didn't know mattered until later to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 2:38Send someone a text and ask them what's in your desk drawer that
- 2:41you haven't unfolded yet. You can get a free copy of my
