- 0:00Speaker 1: Cafe or a Manchester for the final live edition of
- 0:03Speaker 1: the Women's Basketball Coaches Show. Great audience here once again,
- 0:07Speaker 1: thanks for coming out here to listen to Geno tuck
- 0:10Speaker 1: yukon women's basketball. Gino's Gino, by the way, is our
- 0:13Speaker 1: applause meter, you know at the end when you know
- 0:15Speaker 1: we do the applause like you know for the game
- 0:17Speaker 1: shows and stuff. That's that's his job. So we're down
- 0:20Speaker 1: a five two games left, that's it. I mean January,
- 0:22Speaker 1: when you get to January, it flies and no, no
- 0:27Speaker 1: different this year.
- 0:28Speaker 2: No, that's it. That's it. I mean, you know, you
- 0:32Speaker 2: start in October and you know you're you're anxious for
- 0:37Speaker 2: the season to start, and all of a sudden, you know,
- 0:42Speaker 2: you get back from Christmas and it's it's January first,
- 0:46Speaker 2: and the games are all bunched in together. You know,
- 0:49Speaker 2: you play so many of them in a row, and
- 0:52Speaker 2: you just get lost in the in the in the
- 0:56Speaker 2: travel and the rhythm of you know, brack this practice
- 1:00Speaker 2: game they all practice practice game day. Often you just
- 1:03Speaker 2: get caught up in it. And next thing you know,
- 1:05Speaker 2: you can wake up and it's March. First thing, you're
- 1:09Speaker 2: playing your last regular season game and that's that's how
- 1:12Speaker 2: fast it goes. And uh, I think the older you get,
- 1:18Speaker 2: the faster it goes.
- 1:19Speaker 1: It does.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Has a lot of people in here shaking their head. Yes,
- 1:23Speaker 2: uh huh, absolutely yeah, flies by, you know what I say. Wait,
- 1:31Speaker 2: weeks are nowadays and right months or now weeks and
- 1:36Speaker 2: for sure weeks are now years.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Saturday was just I mean, we're used to it being
- 1:42Speaker 1: on the road with the rock stars known as your team,
- 1:45Speaker 1: with social media and everything. Saturday in Ankle field House
- 1:48Speaker 1: was just amazing. They sell out Ankle ninety one hundred
- 1:53Speaker 1: tons of pagebackers jerseys in there, three or four sections
- 1:57Speaker 1: with Ashland Shade's friends and family, her first ever game
- 2:01Speaker 1: playing at hanklefield House, which is amazing. She told us
- 2:04Speaker 1: that in the postgame show. But it was just a
- 2:06Speaker 1: great atmosphere. And then afterwards, I mean, kids hanging around
- 2:10Speaker 1: wanting to get a picture with Page or at least
- 2:12Speaker 1: get a picture of Page. It was a wild scene Saturday.
- 2:15Speaker 1: It was, and we've seen that in a lot of
- 2:17Speaker 1: places this year. I heard the stories of fans are
- 2:19Speaker 1: in the trees in Chicago outside between the the Marriott
- 2:24Speaker 1: and the arena, and just went just wanted to get
- 2:28Speaker 1: a glimpse. It's wild.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it is. It is, And a lot of the
- 2:33Speaker 2: schools in our league are not really accustomed to any
- 2:38Speaker 2: of that stuff, so we've had to this year we
- 2:48Speaker 2: bring a security person with us because you know, the
- 2:52Speaker 2: fans just have access to the court. They they always
- 2:57Speaker 2: know what hotel you're staying at, so they're always waiting
- 3:00Speaker 2: for you went outside the hotel. Especially autograph people that
- 3:04Speaker 2: you know want everybody's autographs so they can sell it
- 3:07Speaker 2: on eBay or wherever the heck they put them, and
- 3:12Speaker 2: then they're waiting for you when you get to the arena,
- 3:14Speaker 2: and then you're waiting for you when you come out
- 3:16Speaker 2: of the game. And this year has been especially crazy
- 3:19Speaker 2: because you know, I don't know if you knew this,
- 3:23Speaker 2: but this is how it works in their world. You know,
- 3:28Speaker 2: there's this there's this company that is a basketball kind
- 3:33Speaker 2: of sort of basketball company and they do a lot
- 3:35Speaker 2: with kids, middle school kids, like kids from maybe eight, nine,
- 3:43Speaker 2: ten to you know, thirteen, fourteen year olds. So they
- 3:52Speaker 2: they have this huge following and on TikTok they put
- 3:59Speaker 2: out out all this content to the world. But the
- 4:05Speaker 2: world is nine year olds to fourteen year olds, so
- 4:13Speaker 2: every nine year old to fourteen year old gets fifteen
- 4:18Speaker 2: things a day on page or anyone else that makes
- 4:22Speaker 2: a lot of news. And and this is how this
- 4:25Speaker 2: is how they all know where she is and where
- 4:28Speaker 2: she's going to be. And that's the craziness. And they
- 4:30Speaker 2: wear their hair like her and all that. It really
- 4:34Speaker 2: is like a one of those you know, Taylor Swift phenomenons.
- 4:39Speaker 2: You know, I don't know what tickets are going for
- 4:42Speaker 2: Thursday night and what they're going for on Sunday, but
- 4:45Speaker 2: I know it's a lot more than what they cost
- 4:47Speaker 2: at the ticket office, you know. And that's great for them,
- 4:52Speaker 2: great for the kids, and great for Butler because there's
- 4:54Speaker 2: nine thousand people at the game and there. They haven't
- 4:58Speaker 2: gotten nine thousand total the last five years.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah, they had forty one hundred for Indiana, but that's it.
- 5:04Speaker 2: So you know, most of those people were Indiana fans probably,
- 5:09Speaker 2: you know, So for them to get a big crowd
- 5:13Speaker 2: and maybe a bunch of people come back and become
- 5:15Speaker 2: Butler basketball fans, and they'll be there next time next
- 5:18Speaker 2: year when we go out there.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Austin's got a pretty decent group of kids. He's worked
- 5:22Speaker 1: his tail off.
- 5:22Speaker 2: The Yeah, you know, two of their best players were hurt,
- 5:25Speaker 2: right and they didn't play, so that you know, they
- 5:27Speaker 2: it's not like they have like he told me. You know,
- 5:31Speaker 2: we were talking before the game, you know, and he said, yeah,
- 5:34Speaker 2: he said, I was talking to my wife. He said,
- 5:37Speaker 2: you know, one got kick at just the big kid
- 5:39Speaker 2: hurt her hurt her ankle or something the day before,
- 5:42Speaker 2: you know, the game before and he said, yeah, we're
- 5:44Speaker 2: going to play against the winning his program in history.
- 5:48Speaker 2: And they've got nine McDonald's All Americans. And I've got kids
- 5:51Speaker 2: that eat at McDonald's.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I will say this, He's got a lot of kids
- 5:56Speaker 1: that were Indiana All Stars. He goes in state, and
- 6:00Speaker 1: that's an obviously testament to you. Getting ash and Kelly Ferris,
- 6:04Speaker 1: who apparently was there with her parents. Yeah, yeah, she
- 6:07Speaker 1: had her team went to overtime. She was late coming
- 6:08Speaker 1: to the game because I did text her. I saw
- 6:10Speaker 1: her mom.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 1: But then after that, yeah, speaking of players on the floor,
- 6:14Speaker 1: and we'll ask one more question and then we'll get
- 6:16Speaker 1: into the bulk of the last three games. What a
- 6:19Speaker 1: joy it was to see Carolina on the floor Saturday,
- 6:21Speaker 1: you know, the first time this year. The last warm
- 6:24Speaker 1: up before tip she was out there and I went, hmm,
- 6:28Speaker 1: never haven't seen that yet this year. And then with
- 6:30Speaker 1: two plus minutes to go, here she comes into the
- 6:32Speaker 1: game for the first time. What a testament to this
- 6:35Speaker 1: young lady and what she's put in. And I know
- 6:36Speaker 1: you've raved about her as a teammate.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, some kids, you know, they would just kind
- 6:42Speaker 2: of put it, put it away and say I'm done,
- 6:44Speaker 2: and you know, I don't have anything else, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 2: and me to want to keep doing this without any
- 6:51Speaker 2: guaranteed that I'm ever going to be able to play.
- 6:54Speaker 2: So just to all the credit to her that she
- 6:57Speaker 2: would come to practice every day and do all the
- 6:59Speaker 2: things that she needed to do with no assurances and
- 7:02Speaker 2: no guarantees that it would ever totally work out. But
- 7:08Speaker 2: you know, when she found out, I think she had
- 7:11Speaker 2: a series of tests, uh, and last week was the
- 7:14Speaker 2: last in a series, and you know, and she said,
- 7:19Speaker 2: if I passed these tests, I'm gonna I'm gonna want
- 7:21Speaker 2: to play. What do you think? I said, It's not
- 7:26Speaker 2: for me to say, you know, that's completely up to you,
- 7:29Speaker 2: you know, so she decided. You know, so I looked
- 7:33Speaker 2: over at one point, I said, you want to play?
- 7:37Speaker 2: And she jumped off the bench, you know, and so
- 7:41Speaker 2: she got her two minutes and we'll see what happens
- 7:43Speaker 2: going forward.
- 7:44Speaker 1: What is the headband that she wears that patted a
- 7:46Speaker 1: little bit.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's probably just uh like uh, you know, what
- 7:53Speaker 2: do you call it? Pacifier? You know, she just has
- 7:56Speaker 2: it because she's warning now for so long that practice
- 7:59Speaker 2: that she probably can't play without it. You know. It's
- 8:05Speaker 2: it's like her little security blanket.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Understood.
- 8:08Speaker 2: I don't know whether it does anything to help her.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Or out, but I mean I can give her my
- 8:11Speaker 1: four three umpires mask and a skull cap.
- 8:14Speaker 2: That would help you, Yeah, yeah, that is that might help.
- 8:16Speaker 1: That might have a life savor, yeah, or at least
- 8:19Speaker 1: for me. And I know getting getting hit in the
- 8:21Speaker 1: face few times. My wife is here. She knows concussions
- 8:23Speaker 1: are no fun, especially getting file tips right.
- 8:25Speaker 2: In the mask.
- 8:25Speaker 1: But that's what happens with Empires. You take your risks.
- 8:28Speaker 1: That's anything else in life. All right, we'll come back.
- 8:31Speaker 1: We will get into the last three games. Of all
- 8:33Speaker 1: three games on the road, and of course one of
- 8:35Speaker 1: those was was the signature one of the season. We're
- 8:38Speaker 1: live at Cafe or at Manchester. The final live edition
- 8:41Speaker 1: of the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show on Learfield. Stay
- 8:43Speaker 1: with us, We'll be right back.
