- 0:00In this lessons episode, discover how addressing the root causes of trauma may differ from simply managing its symptoms.
- 0:05Understand how education and nervous system awareness can reshape responses to past experiences.
- 0:10Explore why unresolved trauma can compound over time and uncover how building resilience can create lasting emotional change.
- 0:24So...
- 0:25Talk about TIP.
- 0:27Talk about the actual program, how you deploy it, but also maybe contrast it to traditional therapy.
- 0:34Okay.
- 0:34I think that's interesting because I think a lot of people, the way they would solve for a lot of these experiences right now would be traditional therapy because I know that you condense a lot of this into a four-hour window.
- 0:44That's your ideal optimal experience.
- 0:47set up.
- 0:48Why is a four-hour window important?
- 0:50What do you do in that four-hour window versus therapy, which is an hour per week, I would assume.
- 1:00A week, per month, whatever.
- 1:01Yep.
- 1:02So let's walk through the actual program so people understand why it's structured the way it is.
- 1:06Because I know there's a lot of...
- 1:08thought behind the four hour.
- 1:09A lot of science.
- 1:10Why you got it?
- 1:10Yes.
- 1:11Yep.
- 1:11Let's go into it.
- 1:12So that was really what I did is I looked at it and I said, okay, if somebody comes in and they say to me, I have anxiety, I say, that's the symptom of the problem.
- 1:23Why not look at what caused this anxiety?
- 1:27There's a something that happened.
- 1:28There's a root cause to it.
- 1:30So if we get to the root cause, you won't have anxiety.
- 1:32Anxiety is just a symptom.
- 1:34But they treat the symptom in traditional, like, are we going to treat your anxiety by giving you anti-anxiety medications?
- 1:41So they're trying to chemically change the brain.
- 1:45And remember I talked about the trauma loop.
- 1:47So our minds are constantly to make it simple, doing Google searches all the time, pulling up files.
- 1:53What do we know about this experience?
- 1:56What the medication is doing is blocking the Google search.
- 1:59It's not fixing the problem.
- 2:01So the problem is still there, but you're sort of numbed out.
- 2:04And so, and then traditional talk therapy, which I'm not saying is bad, traditional talk therapy will want to say, well, what do you, how does it make you feel?
- 2:13What do you think about?
- 2:15Well, I think you keep reinforcing it.
- 2:18And then you're only in there for an hour.
- 2:20So if you're in there for an hour,
- 2:22chances are you're going to be in a high beta brainwave state because you're coming in to talk about, let's take a stream.
- 2:28They rehash all the memories.
- 2:30All the memories.
- 2:30So they're in high beta talking to their therapist about a high beta event.
- 2:36And so how much work are you going to get done if you're in the same state that you experience the event in?
- 2:43Not a lot, maybe a little bit.
- 2:45That's why traditional therapy takes a long time because you're sort of getting little pieces trying to get that done.
- 2:52What I do, and the reason I use four hours...
- 2:55is in the first two hours, it's almost what we're doing here.
- 2:58It's education and science.
- 3:00I tell you how I developed it.
- 3:02The first thing I say to everybody when they come in, there's nothing wrong with you, and there's nothing wrong with your mind.
- 3:07Your mind is doing exactly what it's supposed to do, is protect you.
- 3:12It's dealing with some glitches and error messages.
- 3:15So think of the brain, the physical brain, as the computer.
- 3:19The mind is the software.
- 3:21If I drop the computer, the computer is going to get damaged.
- 3:24If I hit my brain, I'm going to get a concussion.
- 3:26I'm going to get it damaged.
- 3:28Software is prone to glitches and error messages.
- 3:31Of course.
- 3:32And you get a virus.
- 3:33Yeah.
- 3:34So what do we do when we have a glitch in software?
- 3:37We reboot the software.
- 3:38We recode the software.
- 3:40Right?
- 3:40We don't try to throw the software out or say we got bad software.
- 3:44All we have to do is reset it.
- 3:46So I always talk about if you, every time you hit the M key on your computer, your computer shut off.
- 3:52So if you took your computer to your computer therapist, your computer therapist would say, don't touch the M key.
- 3:59Stay away from words with M's in them.
- 4:01What's wrong with you?
- 4:01It's going to activate.
- 4:03They'll say trigger.
- 4:04I never use the word trigger.
- 4:05I say activate.
- 4:06Why not?
- 4:07I thought it sounded negative and violent.
- 4:09So when people come in and say, oh, this triggers me, and I'm saying, the first thing I think of is a gun and somebody firing.
- 4:16Yeah, I guess, yeah.
- 4:18And so what I say is try to remove the gun analogies from a mental health environment.
- 4:22Yeah, not a bad idea.
- 4:23I say it's activating your nervous system.
- 4:26Why would it activate it?
- 4:27Because it perceives a threat.
- 4:30So it's supposed to do that.
- 4:32That's why I say there's nothing wrong with you.
- 4:34If a lion shows up here, we're supposed to
- 4:40If we think about a lion, we're not supposed to be activated.
- 4:44Why would we get activated if we thought about a lion?
- 4:46Because we got attacked by a lion.
- 4:48And the mind starts looking at the resource, what do we know about lions?
- 4:52And then it starts to see the old information in real time.
- 4:57And that's the movie analogy I was talking about.
- 5:00Your mind thinks something's happening.
- 5:02So if your mind thought something was happening, doesn't it make sense it would activate?
- 5:06Of course.
- 5:06It has to.
- 5:08So there's nothing wrong with you, but they'll tell you anxiety, depression, panic attacks, oh, there's something wrong.
- 5:14You've got a mental health issue.
- 5:17No, your system is doing exactly what it's designed to do.
- 5:21It's reading old information.
- 5:24So the way that you structure the... And then you actually set up like...
- 5:28So I know the way that you help people and the way that you work with people, there's sort of two different formats.
- 5:32You have like a personal four-hour session, which is like the highest touch, but then you can also...
- 5:39do this in groups or online to a degree as well.
- 5:42So you've, you've developed systems for both, but obviously all based on the same fundamentals.
- 5:47It's exactly the same program.
- 5:48So if you come and see me one-on-one, I take you through the program, you know, people say, well, what's the difference between that and the digital version?
- 5:55Like just watching through the digital, like on your own.
- 5:59I said, it's a book and the movie.
- 6:00Yeah.
- 6:01If you read the book and then watched the movie, you'd go, ah, the book was a lot better because I got a lot more out of the book.
- 6:07But if you just watch the movie, the movie works.
- 6:10It takes you through the same thing.
- 6:11It's just not me telling you personally, but it's me doing the exact same thing, but just on video.
- 6:18Is there, is this something like this, this process, is this something that would be healthy to do periodically?
- 6:26You can refresh, but once we get the bulk of the work done, unless there's new stuff coming up, chances are you wouldn't really need to do it.
- 6:34Plus, we've given you the tools, right, that you could continue to use.
- 6:38Is there, and even going forward, is there a way to, like, harden yourself so that you don't have some of these things imprint on you?
- 6:46Or is that a very difficult thing to do?
- 6:48Well, trauma's going to affect us no matter what.
- 6:51Yeah.
- 6:52But here's the advantage.
- 6:53If you have...
- 6:55old trauma, think of it, you're carrying around 150 pound backpack.
- 6:58Yeah.
- 6:59Right.
- 6:59And then somebody goes, here's another 10 pounds.
- 7:02That just can, can bring you to your knee.
- 7:04Yeah.
- 7:05But if you get the 150 pound backpack off you and another 10 pounds comes at you.
- 7:11You've got a lot more resilience now.
- 7:13You'll be able to probably work through it.
- 7:16That's the biggest problem.
- 7:17So many people come through and they have all of this childhood trauma, and then they get hit as an adult again, and then all of a sudden they're just taken down.
- 7:27People say, oh, I guess that event.
- 7:30I worked with a person from the Boston Marathon.
- 7:32I worked with a few of them, Boston Marathon bombing.
- 7:35And what she said to me, she goes, I thought I came in here because of the Boston Marathon bombing.
- 7:41She goes, that's obviously the big one.
- 7:43She goes, I'm in post-traumatic stress.
- 7:44I'm having terror nightmares.
- 7:46She says, my childhood trauma, I had no idea was that impactful on me.
- 7:51She goes, I got more out of the childhood trauma than I did out of the Boston Marathon bombing.
- 7:57trauma, right?
- 7:58It was more impactful for me.
- 8:00So the Boston Marathon is another 50 pounds just packed onto her 150 pounds that she'd been carrying, right?
- 8:09So once we got the 150 pounds off, right, it was easier to deal, well, not easier.
- 8:15I mean, it's going to be a lot simpler to deal with that 50 pound Boston Marathon.
- 8:21So she came in with a whole bunch of other trauma and then that one happens, right?
- 8:26then all of a sudden the system, it's an overwhelm.
- 8:28But even if you don't remember everything that happened to you, the way that you structured this, and like, I'm not well-versed in therapy, so I'm sure that traditional therapy tries to get into this as well, but the system that you've structured, it can pull out things that you weren't
- 8:43really conscious of.
- 8:44Yeah.
- 8:44Even aware of.
- 8:45So, to go back to the four hours, so the first two hours, I don't ask you a thing about trauma.
- 8:51I just educate you and say, here's how your brain works.
- 8:55Here's how the brain waves work, beta, alpha, theta, delta.
- 8:58Here's how the mind is going to process, right?
- 9:01So, you get all the science.
- 9:03And that's actually so helpful because what I hear constantly is it's like click, click.
- 9:10You're connecting all that.
- 9:11Now I'm getting it.
- 9:12Of course this would happen to me.
- 9:14How could it not happen to me?
- 9:16And so if people come in and they say, I have this and this and this, and I go, well, there's a reason why.
- 9:22I never had your life experience.
- 9:24If I had had your life experience, I'd be right where you are.
- 9:27I'm not specially unique, right?
- 9:30I just had a special unique childhood.
- 9:32that allowed me to do that.
- 9:34Then the next hour, we're going to get into some specific events.
- 9:39So I'm looking for basically three events.
- 9:42So I'll say, can you tell me about three different events that you had?
- 9:46But I'm looking for, if that event was made into a movie, I'm looking for the movie trailer.
- 9:52I want the minute, two-minute recap of it.
- 9:56And I don't need you to talk about it.
- 9:58I don't even need you to tell me about it.
- 10:00I can actually get your mind to clear it without knowing one word.
- 10:04And people say, I don't have to talk about it.
- 10:06So that's how when I do the groups, I could have 25 people in a room all going through their own personal trauma event and nobody's sharing it.
- 10:15The techniques I take them through does the clearing.
- 10:18Because they're discovering it in their own head.
- 10:20In their own head.
- 10:21They're seeing it.
- 10:22How does it help them for me to know that?
- 10:26It doesn't.
- 10:27No.
- 10:27There's only curiosity on my part because their mind is going to fix it.
- 10:32Right?
- 10:32I'm not fixing it.
- 10:33Their own system is fixing it.
- 10:35So if you came in with a broken leg and we reset your leg, how much credit should I get for that healing?
- 10:42I just reset it.
- 10:43You reset it, but the body did its own thing.
- 10:45Did its own thing.
- 10:46Yeah.
- 10:46It's the same thing with this.
- 10:47I don't take the credit.
- 10:49Your mind is going to do it.
- 10:50The reason it hasn't been able to do it is because you didn't understand why it was doing it.
- 10:56Once I educate you, you can see how this can work.
- 10:59It's so simple.
- 11:01You don't need to live and manage and cope with it.
- 11:03Fix it.
- 11:03So this all makes a lot of sense.
- 11:06There's probably a lot that's broken with the traditional...
- 11:09way of fixing things.
- 11:10Yeah.
- 11:11I feel like a lot of people are not going to like you that much.
- 11:14That's okay.
- 11:15Well, we get two camps.
- 11:17Some people that go, that's nonsense.
- 11:18You can't do it that fast.
- 11:19But we got the evidence, right?
- 11:21Well, that's actually how we connected because somebody's doing the studies.
- 11:26Yeah, we're going to publish the study.
- 11:27Yeah.
- 11:28Yeah.
- 11:28So I had, here's a good example.
- 11:30I had one lady, a therapist who saw the kind of work I was doing.
- 11:35She was referring, she referred me the ones that she knew would take her a long time.
- 11:40So she says, I've got a lady that you, I think you're going to be the only one that can help her.
- 11:44Can you, can she come and see you?
- 11:46Can you get it right?
- 11:46She had a 60s lady, had a home invasion, got pistol whipped, having panic attacks, can't even get out of her house.
- 11:56And she says, if we can get her to you, can you see her right away?
- 12:00So I said, OK.
- 12:02So she comes in.
- 12:03And as soon as she walks in the door, actually, it was my wife that was there that day.
- 12:08And she just breaks down crying.
- 12:11She's sobbing.
- 12:12And she's walking with a walker.
- 12:14And so she comes in, I take her through the whole program and it was like life changing for her.
- 12:22And so this was on a Tuesday.
- 12:25She goes back to see the therapist on her therapist on Friday.
- 12:29And her therapist calls me after the session, right?
- 12:33And so she says, I just saw her.
- 12:36And I said, she's doing pretty good, right?
- 12:38And she goes, oh, yeah.
- 12:40She's doing pretty good.
- 12:41She goes, I knew it would, right?
- 12:42She says, but when she came in to my office, she says, I have good news and bad news.
- 12:48And so the therapist, she goes, well, the good news is you're not walking with a walker.
- 12:53She goes, no, I don't need the walker.
- 12:55She goes, the bad news is you're fired.
- 12:58I'm coming back.
- 13:01And she says, but I was happy for her.
- 13:02But that should be the way that the health and wellness and medical system works.
- 13:08But it's not how the system works at all.
- 13:10But this therapist was thrilled.
- 13:12She was a true, caring person.
- 13:14And she knew that this was the fastest way to get her there.
