Transcript
- 0:22Speaker 1: Hey y'all. Emily here coming in with another installment of
- 0:26Speaker 1: five Minute Friday on Hurdle. Like many of you, I
- 0:33Speaker 1: have been doing my fair amount of reflecting thinking about
- 0:40Speaker 1: the past year, and so much has happened this year.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I have grown so much this year, and I think
- 0:48Speaker 1: about specifically where I am emotionally and personally at this
- 0:54Speaker 1: point this episode coming out on December ninth, versus where
- 0:58Speaker 1: I was on January first. And although I'm not someone
- 1:04Speaker 1: who really likes to dwell in the past, our past
- 1:09Speaker 1: does inform our present and then in turn helps us
- 1:15Speaker 1: proceed into the future, right, And so I realize, reflecting
- 1:20Speaker 1: on the past year, that I really am a different
- 1:25Speaker 1: person at this point. I spoke about this a couple
- 1:28Speaker 1: of weeks ago, but I had a really bumpy start
- 1:30Speaker 1: to twenty twenty two. And when I think about one
- 1:34Speaker 1: of the biggest through lines for me this year, it's
- 1:39Speaker 1: truly patience. Patience with myself, patience with the process, understanding
- 1:47Speaker 1: that there are just things in life that cannot be rushed, period,
- 1:54Speaker 1: and patience is challenging, right. Patience is one of those
- 1:59Speaker 1: things that like, oh my goodness, self compassion, maybe self
- 2:05Speaker 1: care strategies different types of positive self talk. I mean,
- 2:10Speaker 1: it is something that needs to be flexed and strengthened.
- 2:13Speaker 1: The more that you work on your patients like a muscle,
- 2:16Speaker 1: the more resilient and strong you will become. Over the
- 2:21Speaker 1: last twelve months, my patience has seriously been tested in
- 2:27Speaker 1: ways that I did not expect. I was on a
- 2:31Speaker 1: walk this morning with my friend and I kind of
- 2:35Speaker 1: giggled over this idea that every single turn of the
- 2:40Speaker 1: new year, one of the things that I say to
- 2:43Speaker 1: myself is that this is the year that I am
- 2:45Speaker 1: going to focus on my relationships and specifically perhaps just
- 2:50Speaker 1: maybe this is the year that I'm going to find love.
- 2:53Speaker 1: And here I am. I think this is, you know,
- 2:55Speaker 1: year four of saying that, and it's still just me
- 3:01Speaker 1: in this little studio doing what I do. But that's
- 3:04Speaker 1: not that's not saying that I don't have a lot
- 3:08Speaker 1: of love in my life and a lot of relationships
- 3:11Speaker 1: that I'm really grateful for. I feel like maybe one
- 3:15Speaker 1: of the biggest tests of my patients has been trusting
- 3:21Speaker 1: the process that eventually whatever is meant for me, whoever
- 3:26Speaker 1: is meant for me, is gonna be worth that weight.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Beyond that again, I spoke about the year, the beginning
- 3:35Speaker 1: of the year being challenging for me, and that required
- 3:38Speaker 1: a lot of patients, right, because God, there was not
- 3:40Speaker 1: a morning that I would wake up feeling as though
- 3:43Speaker 1: I was sitting in a room with the curtains drawn
- 3:47Speaker 1: and I could not open them and see light.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Like.
- 3:50Speaker 1: There was not a moment where I was sitting in
- 3:52Speaker 1: that dark room, not wishing that I felt differently than
- 3:55Speaker 1: I did in that moment, but understanding now with a
- 4:00Speaker 1: little bit more perspective, that that darkness happened for me,
- 4:07Speaker 1: that tough hurdle happened for me, And so there was
- 4:12Speaker 1: an amazing, an amazing amount of patience that was required
- 4:17Speaker 1: through that chapter hard stop and relating to patients. I
- 4:24Speaker 1: also feel as though that word grace really comes up
- 4:27Speaker 1: for me a lot, because without having grace for myself
- 4:32Speaker 1: through these hurdles, through a lot of these moments that
- 4:35Speaker 1: have required such patience. Man, listen, life is too short
- 4:42Speaker 1: to be shit talking yourself all of the time. And
- 4:44Speaker 1: I would be remiss if I didn't say that. I
- 4:46Speaker 1: certainly had moments over the past through sixty five where
- 4:51Speaker 1: the conversation happening within my head was not stellar. But
- 4:57Speaker 1: I know what I am looking for, and I am
- 5:01Speaker 1: in pursuit of positivity and goodness and all that is
- 5:07Speaker 1: great beyond good. And so for me, that good that
- 5:12Speaker 1: turns into great starts with grace. It starts with self compassion.
- 5:19Speaker 1: This year, my big words when I reflect really are patience, good, grace,
- 5:30Speaker 1: and maybe just a hint of resiliency. So I'm curious
- 5:34Speaker 1: for you this year, what are your words of the
- 5:37Speaker 1: year and what are you thinking about going forward? I
- 5:41Speaker 1: know I talked about this with Mollie in her episode
- 5:44Speaker 1: that came out on Monday, about what words we're thinking
- 5:48Speaker 1: about heading into twenty three. My word is great, and
- 5:52Speaker 1: I want to know yours, So tell me. Hit me
- 5:56Speaker 1: with a tag over on social I'm over at Hurdle Podcast.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Of course you can always hit me up as well
- 6:01Speaker 1: over at Hurdle Podcast. And before I let you go,
- 6:06Speaker 1: of course, I'm going to throw in a listener voicemail
- 6:11Speaker 1: for you.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Hey, Emily, this is Leah. I've been a long time
- 6:15Speaker 2: listener and follower of you, and I just wanted to
- 6:18Speaker 2: say to today's podcast with Molly, which is so unexpectedly powerful,
- 6:23Speaker 2: I almost didn't listen, and I realized how similar her
- 6:26Speaker 2: story is to mine and I just needed that and
- 6:30Speaker 2: it helped me be kinder to myself, to understand how
- 6:34Speaker 2: to really think about things differently. And I also appreciate
- 6:36Speaker 2: you telling your story. So I just wanted to say
- 6:39Speaker 2: thanks for everything that you do. And you know, even
- 6:42Speaker 2: though we're not maybe in the same room, just listening
- 6:45Speaker 2: to what you've been putting out and the hard work
- 6:49Speaker 2: just really makes a difference to people's lives. And I
- 6:51Speaker 2: just hope you know that thanks. Again.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I listened to this and I put this here just
- 6:56Speaker 1: to share another takeaway with you that really resonated with me.
- 7:01Speaker 1: It is never inappropriate to tell someone how much they
- 7:07Speaker 1: mean to you, to reiterate to someone, regardless of whatever
- 7:11Speaker 1: role that they play in your life, that you appreciate them,
- 7:16Speaker 1: especially during a time of year that there's just so
- 7:19Speaker 1: much happening. It can be really chaotic, many of us,
- 7:23Speaker 1: you know, trying to tie up loose ends and just
- 7:27Speaker 1: get to that finish line, so to speak, right, And
- 7:29Speaker 1: so I appreciate this listener for giving me her feedback
- 7:35Speaker 1: and know that something that you say to someone else
- 7:40Speaker 1: could truly impact them in ways that you may not
- 7:44Speaker 1: even consider or imagine, and it could just hit at
- 7:48Speaker 1: the right time, and you could be the reason that
- 7:51Speaker 1: they smile. And what an amazing opportunity. That's it for
- 7:57Speaker 1: this week, another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
