- 1:11Great Detectives dot net. Well. In general, The Adventures of Philip Marlow
- 1:15the CBS Run is a pretty fairly well collected series. In fact, with
- 1:23one exception, you won't find more than two episodes in a row missing and
- 1:29well over eighty percent or in circulation. But there is a stretch from October
- 1:34thirty first of nineteen forty eight all the way to December nineteenth of that year
- 1:42in which only one of those episodes is in circulation, and that's the episode
- 1:52we're playing today. Today's episode originally aired November twenty eighth of nineteen forty eight,
- 2:00a month after A Heart of Gold and the tunitle of This is The
- 2:04Hard Way Out. When I started, I thought one man was in trouble
- 2:07and three were trying to help him. But after I found two pounds of
- 2:12tobacco, two pieces of brass, and a boat without a pilot heading straight
- 2:15out to sea, I knew they had all been in trouble and all had
- 2:19taken the Hard Way Out. From the pan of Raymond Chandler, outstanding author
- 2:24of crime fiction, comes his most famous character. CBS presents The Adventures of
- 2:30Philip Marlowe. Now with Gerald Moore start as Philip Marlowe. We bring you
- 2:46tonight's exciting story, The Hard Way Out. I killed the shank of the
- 3:02afternoon in a Hollywood the proping Store, Trying for the fifth consecutive year to
- 3:07select something unique in a personalized Christmas card, a bright eyed sales girl finally
- 3:13suggested, in desperation, a smoking thirty eight, spelling out Noel and delicate
- 3:19wisps of white curling smoke. Well, I gave up, settled for a
- 3:23reissue of last year's unoriginal message, an hour later, I was driving out
- 3:28sorts of Pulver and my new client, August Quick, and I was glad
- 3:31to be away from the pre holiday crowds in back to work. When I
- 3:36pulled up in front of the factory building, an immodest sign told me the
- 3:39man I was to meet inside was president and co founder of Quigg and Slater,
- 3:46manufacturers of nothing but the best in construction materials. Come in, Come
- 3:51in, given you in a minute. I'm on the pall. August Pack
- 3:55does not change his policy over night later, not after twenty five years.
- 3:59You should know that you, of all people, never mind this excuseus raight,
- 4:01those you always have and they make me sick. Partnership travel, mister
- 4:05Quig, Oh no, my partner is dead now ten years. That's what
- 4:10his son, Keith Slater. But he has nothing to say here. His
- 4:13father left it that way. Well sit down at tomorrow please. Slater is
- 4:16not what I want to talk to you about, all right, mister Quig.
- 4:19Who is the man and what's his problem? My general manager Frank Emory,
- 4:24No, he hasn't puzzled sixty thousand dollars of this company's money in the
- 4:27last year. Hmmm. And isn't this a great time for you to climb
- 4:30the nearest rooftop and sclaim Kappy, no, because I want to save Frank
- 4:34Emory, not content him. Why what's so special about a general manager who
- 4:39keeps dipping itchy fingers into the tail tomorrow. Frank Emory has worked for me
- 4:43for seven years, and in that time he has climbed from shopworker to plant
- 4:46foreman the general manager. And that is something which took me fifteen years,
- 4:49which proves why that Frank can one day go right to the top here to
- 4:54my job the honest way. And that is just the party was on until
- 4:58a year ago when he got married and he started to fill his pockets with
- 5:01company letters before it even gotten rid of the rice? Is that it?
- 5:04Yes, but don't lead to any conclusions with tomorrow. Because his wife,
- 5:08Sheila is a very sweet woman. Everybody knows that, if anything, she
- 5:11should be a good influence. Mister quig, what's Frank emery salary? Ondred
- 5:15and seventy five a week? When's your last saying? This afternoon about two
- 5:20o'clock I called him in here, but I didn't say anything about the shortage.
- 5:25We just thought. I asked him if he thought he needed a vacation.
- 5:30He only sulked. He said he'd be all right in a little while.
- 5:32Then he left. But when he got back to his desk, he
- 5:36only stopped there long enough to pick up his hat. That was three hours
- 5:40ago. You call his house since twice, but I got no answer.
- 5:44He's the number, Marlow, and the address. Now we better stop talking
- 5:46start moving. I must know what Frank Emory plans to do. Yeah,
- 5:51this is my private number. Now, plan for pos in half an hour,
- 5:55but I'll be here working late. Okay, But before I get going,
- 5:58mister quake, one more question, just so all this will make some
- 6:00sense to me. Were you ever in a jam like this yourself? A
- 6:04long time ago? Maybe? And you know what it's like to be in
- 6:08Emory shoes? But the feller, mister Marlow, I don't seem to remember
- 6:14a rich man who once kept me out of a lot of trouble. But
- 6:16the details aren't very clear anymore. So good night, good luck. Hello,
- 6:34mister Frank Emory, Please, I'm sorry he's not in Is this Philip
- 6:39Marlow? Yeah, that's right. That should make you sel Emory. Yes,
- 6:44I just finished speaking to August Quick at the plant, Mistermorrow. He
- 6:46told me about you, Frank. Take it easy, missus Emory crying isn't
- 6:51going to help Frank any Yes, no, But how can I help Frank?
- 6:56What can I do? I'm not sure? But look, can you
- 6:58meet me right away? I'm at the Golden cry It's a cocktail lounge and
- 7:00Santa Monica Boulevard in the brightly Yes, of course, mister Morrow. I'll
- 7:03be there as soon as possible. Exactly thirty four minutes later, a two
- 7:16tones sleek convertible about the size of a Pullman car, glided to a stop
- 7:20in front of the Golden Crown. The loveliness behind the wheel was wearing a
- 7:26hundred dollar handknit dress that just wouldn't let go. I knew it couldn't be
- 7:30Sheila Hemry, but it was. She was a tall, luscious blonde with
- 7:35blue gray eyes that were set wide apart and a face that any angel would
- 7:40have gladly traded his wings for. Five minutes later, we were seated inside
- 7:45of the Quiet Corner Booth. But only two weeks ago, everything was perfect,
- 7:49mister Morlow. Frank didn't seem to have a care in the world.
- 7:54Then, all of a sudden, he changed, He became quiet, almost
- 7:57morals. He never suspected that he was dealing him Quick, of course not.
- 8:01And I still think there's some explanation, something we don't know about.
- 8:03Maybe, but from where I said, it looks like YouTube and keeping up
- 8:07with the Vanderbilts instead of the Joneses. It always Dan's the bank account.
- 8:11Just what do you mean by that, mister Morrow? Exhibit A, that
- 8:13knit one pearl two number you're worring? What exhibit B? That splash of
- 8:16automobile you drove it in? But Frank said we could afford those things.
- 8:20I know because I was worried when we bought the boat? What boat?
- 8:24Year? Fore it's a thirty foot sailboat. We darted near our college,
- 8:28just beyond Santa Monica. Hey wait a minute, a sailboat, a cottage
- 8:31at the beach, that car. Just how far do you think one hundred
- 8:35and seventy five bucks will stretch these days? What do you mean Frank makes
- 8:39twice that plus bonuses? Not unless he has a very fancy paper route on
- 8:43the side. Because our hundred and seventy five period is the figure that Quick
- 8:48quoted to me an hour ago. No, I can't believe that Frank wouldn't
- 8:54let him be that with. Yeah, some guys do funny things when they're
- 8:56too much in love. Low tears. Take time, Honey, about holding
- 9:01him back long enough to give me some dope. It'll put me on Frank's
- 9:03trail. I mean names and numbers, is clubs his friends? Anything will
- 9:09give me a line, yes, of course, But all that information is
- 9:13in his address book at home. All right, homes are next up,
- 9:18just between us, Sheila, What are the chances that Frank has an extracurricular
- 9:24interest on a back street somewhere another woman. Oh no, I'm sure that's
- 9:28not the way things are. Frank loves me very much. Yeah, yeah,
- 9:35I guess, so believe me. If he doesn't, we're not looking
- 9:39for him. Bezzler after a miniac. Come on, let's get out of
- 9:41here. When we left the Golden Crown, Sheila was still crying in had
- 9:54no shape to drive, so after parking my coop in a nearby lot,
- 9:58we floated out to the Emily Place and I would in a two tone neck
- 10:01which did everything at the push of a button except dryer girl's tears. At
- 10:05her house, Sheila pulled herself together long enough to give me a handful of
- 10:09addresses that might possibly lead to frank emery. But just as I was about
- 10:13to leave, I noticed a single phone number scribbled in pencil on the edge
- 10:18of a desk blutter. It was crunched or two two one three one.
- 10:24Since Sheila couldn't explain it, I wrote it down on a slip of paper
- 10:26and filed it in my pocket and lit. Once outside, I remember that
- 10:31my car was still on Santa Monica Boulevard at the Golden Crown, so I
- 10:35started back to the house to call a cab. I stopped suddenly at the
- 10:39sound of somebody in the shadows alongside the house. When I moved toward the
- 10:43noise, a man dotted out between two trees, and I went after him.
- 10:48Get your hands off ly so we can play another round of hide now,
- 10:52dice, brother, I'm getting too old for it. Now, who
- 10:56are you? What are you doing around the memory place? Come on,
- 10:58let's have it. Say. Wait a minute, aren't you aren't you Marlow?
- 11:01The man August Quig hired. That's right. You still haven't answered my
- 11:05question. Oh no, but I will now that I know who you are.
- 11:09I'm quick. Keith Slater surely, dear Quick must have told you of
- 11:13me, the waistrel son of his late partner. He did, which is
- 11:16still parrying Slater. Why are we hiding behind those trees? Correction, Malo,
- 11:20I wasn't hiding. I was waiting for Frank Emery, all right.
- 11:22We won't argue terms. Why we are waiting because I wanted to get hold
- 11:26of Emory and help me before he goes too far. You see, Marlow,
- 11:28he came back to the office after you left. What did he talk
- 11:31to Quig? No? The place had just closed and the old man was
- 11:35out for dinner. Did you talk to Emory? Yes, and it wasn't
- 11:37much fun. That poor fella's just about out of his mind. Milo.
- 11:41He raised them for an hour and a half about how unfair Quig was.
- 11:45Said, he knew that I was the one who'd get to run Quigg and
- 11:48Slater after the old man died. I don't follow that. When did you
- 11:50become a fair head boyer on there? I'm hardly that, but I do
- 11:54own a quarter of the plant, unless, of course, Quig fires me
- 11:56one day. Those are the terms of my father's will. The Quick won't
- 12:00fight you, is that it? He wouldn't think of it. After all,
- 12:03it would keep my dear father from resting easy in his grave. Okay,
- 12:07okay, let's skip it. Exactly what did Frank Emery tell you Slater?
- 12:09He said that August Quig was a two faced liar, that he'd settle
- 12:13with him in his own way. I told Quig that when he got back
- 12:16from dinner, and I also reminded him that Frank had a key to the
- 12:18office. It didn't face quick, didn't No, He said he never worries
- 12:22twice if Emory walked in on and he'd think about what to do about it.
- 12:24Then I tell you, Marlow, we've got to get hold of Frank
- 12:28Emery and stop him before it's too late. In just a moment back to
- 12:39the Adventures of Philiballo, but first, just one hour from now, over
- 12:43most of these same CBS Network stations, Eve Arden will be midway through her
- 12:46regular Sunday Night role of our Miss Brooks, America's most charming and most highly
- 12:52unusual school teacher. You've seen Eve Arden make her hilarious way through many a
- 12:58Hollywood movie. You can hear her every Sunday Night as r Miss Brooks.
- 13:03Just a little later over most of these same CDs network stations, and now
- 13:09with our star Gerald Moore, we returned to the second act, all the
- 13:13adventures of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story, The Hard Way Out. It was
- 13:26nearly an hour later before I was back in my office on kowinga with my
- 13:30finger in the dial of the telethon, checking the names and places that Chila
- 13:33Emory had given me. Two night clubs, three hotels, and five friends.
- 13:37Later, I'd run through the list without a single kosher lead. Sitting
- 13:41there, thinking of all the places a guy could disappear too, I reached
- 13:46into my pocket for a lifesaver and found something else, a slip of paper
- 13:52that read Crenshaw two two one three one, the number I'd seen him a
- 13:56desk blutter at Emory's place. So was nothing more to lose than the millimeter
- 14:00off the tip of my index finger. I went back to dialings from the
- 14:09back shop. So Newton's talking, Newton's what pop, what can I do
- 14:15for you? Kind of thing? All the time. I'm my mistake pipe
- 14:18and top Bacot shop Marlo speaking Sheila, Henry Marlo. I think I know
- 14:24where Frankie you do? Yes at our cottage at the beach. It's closed
- 14:28up, but I was just going through some things in my guests when I
- 14:31discovered that the keys to the place were gone, and I clearly remember seeing
- 14:35them only yesterday. What's the exact location of that cottage. It's two miles
- 14:37north of Santa Monica and down on the beach, directly behind a large white
- 14:41frame house on the Pacific Ghost Highway, number twelve twenty one. You can't
- 14:45miss twelve twenty one. Okay, I'm leaving right now and I'll call you
- 14:48as soon as I can, so try not to worry somehow or ever.
- 14:58And I made it straight out the long sunset to the beach and then north
- 15:01as far as the large white frame house without being tagged below flying by any
- 15:05of the boys in Blue. When I got down to the cottage on the
- 15:07beach, I found it deserted and bought it up like opening night at an
- 15:13unlicensed peep show in Boston. Except for a couple of stray goals who probably
- 15:16had insomnia, I was all alone with a gregarious streak, and they didn't
- 15:20suffer very long because a minute later I had an unannounced visitor. It was
- 15:28a nasty caliber forty five automatic. And the man on the other end,
- 15:31who gripped the handle like he knew what he was doing, was none of
- 15:33it than the general manager of Quick and Slater, mister Frank Emery. Am
- 15:37I telling me who you are and what you want here of a name which
- 15:41probably doesn't matter. Miss Marie's Philip Marlow. But my business with you is
- 15:45something else. I'm working for your boss, August Quigin. Believe it or
- 15:48not, he wants to help you, lie, Marlow. Nobody wants to
- 15:50help me. And you know that this is a smart trick. But he
- 15:52won't work. It can't work. Then I'll tell you why. When the
- 15:56police do get to me, Marlow, they won't find anything but a corpse.
- 15:58Is that clear? Inside? Don't be a fool? What about your
- 16:00wife, Marlow? That way, I took the sixty thousand bucks to say
- 16:04your breath, unless you're interested in joining me to exactly as I say.
- 16:07I here the gout, these keysing over that door. Kwann so kidding?
- 16:15Please Emory, listen to me. Oh there's too many people already now it
- 16:19might hurt to talk. Well, I'm gonna say goodbye in my own way.
- 16:22I don't know what you're doing, Emory's top. I'm inte think.
- 16:25This isn't a time to think, Marlow, this is a type to act.
- 16:27Nah, get in. Hemory backne into the cottage, stepped outside and
- 16:34clolled the door shut. I waited a moment until I heard his car start,
- 16:41and I tried the door and knew I was wasting my time. Hemory
- 16:45had run a piece of pipe through the handle, and God Gansu himself couldn't
- 16:48have opened it from the inside to pay ten minutes to kick enough boards off
- 16:52one of the windows to wiggle out another five to get to a phone,
- 16:55and I told Sheila that her husband was on her way home. In a
- 16:57very desperate frame of mind. She promised the whole them at all costs until
- 17:00I could get there. Twenty minutes later. I wouldn shear his house on
- 17:03Bundy Drive. Mallow, what's your husband? I don't know. He hasn't
- 17:07been here. No, fine, After you called me, I waited,
- 17:10but he didn't come back. Mallow, What did you mean when you said
- 17:11Frank was desperate? I'm afraid Frank intends to kill himself. Kill himself.
- 17:17Oh no, we can. We still may be able to stop him.
- 17:18When he left the beach house. He was heading someplace to say goodbye.
- 17:22I think it for sure that meant you. But wherever he was going,
- 17:25he didn't want to be followed. He locked me in and the gun Holy
- 17:29smoke. Wh's your phone right over there? Oh? Oh, what about
- 17:33a gun? Does Frank heavily? Yeah? Yeah, forty five. He
- 17:36didn't come here to make his last goodbyes. I only read all this,
- 17:38queen. Do you know what you're saying? Come on, answer that phone?
- 17:44No answer on Quick's private wire. You're a killing Frank's murder. He
- 17:48hates mister quig. Yes, but I know he couldn't kill him. He
- 17:51couldn't. You listen to me. Your husband's caught it, and he's decided
- 17:52to blast his way out of a hopeless situation. I'm going to Quick's office.
- 17:56If Frank comes back, try to keep him here. Don't try too
- 18:00hard, because it might be dangerous now, even for you. I drove
- 18:10down to Corvid that the black cooking planet of Quick and Slater, pulled over
- 18:14park and walked up the alley toward the side entrance. Through a barred window.
- 18:18I saw the feeble night light glowed in the outer office. Otherwise the
- 18:22place was dark. When I got to the door, I stopped A diamond
- 18:27shaped key stuck out of the lock, and the heavy door was ajar.
- 18:32I eased it open and listened nothing. I pulled the key out of the
- 18:37lock and dropped into my pocket, and I went inside and switched down the
- 18:41lights. I found him on the floor next to the desk in his private
- 18:45office. He'd been shopping a chest point blank with a forty five, which
- 18:49meant that even before he fell, August Quigg was dead. The room was
- 18:56untouched. Quick's key case, laying the pencil tray on his desk. I
- 19:00stapped it open and saw what I expected, his diamond shaped key. I
- 19:04switched off the lights and started out when I heard heels clicking up the hallway,
- 19:10and backed up against the wall and waited. It was Keith Slater.
- 19:14He hesitated in the open door, started look on his face. Good look,
- 19:19hello Slater, Wizard marlow I wouldn't touch anything if I were you.
- 19:23The police, we want to see it just as it is, Marlowe.
- 19:26He's been murdered. I had no idea Frank would go this far. Yeah,
- 19:30he's full of surprises tonight. Are you sure he's not carrying any grudges
- 19:33against you. Frank and I are old friends. That old man in there
- 19:37was different. He wasn't human. He was a machine, a rock crusher
- 19:40with a concrete heart. Only sawry it with Frank, who did that to
- 19:42him? Because he'll never be able to get away with it. He doesn't
- 19:45intend to plans to commit suicide any minute now, Now he's on the straight
- 19:49slater. How does he feel about his wife? Is he jealous? Jealous?
- 19:52Why? Marlow, you don't think that he might kill Sheila? I'm
- 19:56going to call her right away. Wait a minute, if Frank is there?
- 19:59A phone call and on? Hurry things, come on, let's go.
- 20:10I't like the looks of it, Milo, neither do I Sheila?
- 20:15Rank anybody home. They're not here, either one of them. Now.
- 20:21If they are, they're not talking. You've got a m carve a sense
- 20:23of human and nobody's laughing. Brother. Look you check upstairs. I'll see
- 20:26what I can find out here for once. I hope it's nothing. I
- 20:32gave the ground floor a fast runs through. It was neat and tidy.
- 20:34From copper potted ivy on the dining room wall of the sunbeam toast snats are
- 20:38on the breakfast tray. The only thing out of place was a bottle of
- 20:41scotch near the kitchen sink and lipstick on the glass beside. It said Sheila.
- 20:45I was back in the living room before I found out why she had
- 20:48needed that bracelet dropped against the bowl of violets on the coffee table with who
- 20:53No, it's pinned together. The top one was for me from Sheila,
- 20:57It said Marlow. I just found this note from Frank. I'm sure he
- 21:03means that he's going out and now both the carefree. I've got to stop
- 21:07him, shielder. I turned to Frank's Notean was waiting, and a slayer
- 21:11came down the stairs and you love there, Malo. Did you what's up
- 21:15Frank's suicide note? Yes, Sheila to forgive him and forget him. Yeah,
- 21:19rid yourself. I'm going to call the police. Sure means and I'm
- 21:23going strong. I thought you were going to call the police. I was,
- 21:30but I noticed this phone number here on the desk blotter again. It's
- 21:33a tobacco dealer. Slater. I've got a very wucky idea. I'm going
- 21:38to give it a try. Oh Newton tobacco shop. Yes, from this
- 21:55side. You know, yeah, I know. This is the police.
- 21:56Mister Newton. We want some information. Why take it easy? Do you
- 22:03have a customer named Emory? Frank Emery? Yes, she was in Wait
- 22:07what he buy? Special? Come far? I see how much of it
- 22:12did he get? Oh my, let me thick now, I'm sure of
- 22:21it. Man could lay quite a smoke screen with two pounds in the baco,
- 22:23couldn't he. Thanks mister Newton, you've been a big help. It's
- 22:26a matter. Lady. You looks trouble. Are you thinking the same thing
- 22:29I am? I don't know what you're thinking. Malo. This mighty weird
- 22:33for a guy who was planning suicide to go buy himself two pounds in the
- 22:36back of a few hours before he blows his brains out. But it's succinctly
- 22:40Pal, I'm thinking that Frank Emory's suicide is a big fat phony. This
- 22:47is what Mallo Ybarra catching you with this hour is the best breakup had all
- 22:52night. Oh, so what's up, Marlo. Guy's been murdered. This
- 22:55killer one Frank Emory is getting away by boat. Can you sell a hob
- 22:57of patrol on running him down for me? It's his own assailboat called the
- 23:02catfre a thirty four, an auxiliar remoter. He'll be out ways off to
- 23:06Panga Canyon arranged, but where I find you on each some particulars. I'm
- 23:10going to his beach place. It's in a little cold two miles above Santa
- 23:12Monica. There's a peer in a boathouse a couple of hundred yards beyond.
- 23:15Okay, well we'll find it. I listen, don't defeat. When when
- 23:18will we get there? Henry Beach House was deserted in dark, so Slater
- 23:29and I went out of the boathouse, which was dark too. That's where
- 23:32we found Sheila lying on the plank, sobbing at the end of a long
- 23:36hard cry. Slader ran to her and lifted her to her feet. Sheila
- 23:41chilaps. I was too late. I saw him leave. He waved to
- 23:48me and called Gobyte. I thanked him to come back. No, I
- 23:52never will. I'll be too sure that honey. What do you mean?
- 23:56Mom? Oh wait a minute, wait a minute. That boat coming and
- 24:00it's public barrow. Oh yeah, Garry Barrack. I got another boat out
- 24:07waiting for the Caffre Malloside came directly here. Who's this, missus Emery,
- 24:12miss the slayer, lieutenanty Barro, how do you do? Well? Malo?
- 24:15What's it all about? And then Bezzla killed his boss, set up
- 24:18a strong case of suicide and at the moment is pulling a very fast switch.
- 24:22I mean he's not really checking out. How do you figure it?
- 24:23He bought two pounds of his table at Pizebacco today. That's interesting, Bill,
- 24:30But suicides are the guity of people. Okay, but I'll bet you
- 24:33might sea scout insigny against a dead jellyfish that he's got a small boat board
- 24:37and then he's gonna get off the Cafri and rode ashore. How about it,
- 24:40missus Emory? Is there a small boat? This is a rubber life
- 24:42rest in one of the lacks. I don't do it. It totally needs
- 24:45borrough. Yes, mooney, what is it? Who's gonna call him?
- 24:48The radio near the boat in front of the cafre, running without light west
- 24:52about two and a half miles off shore. He's hold a steady course,
- 24:55but there's nobody at the wheel. Facts seems to be abandoned. I'm telling
- 24:57us stand by believer alone will be right out. Well. Marlow will know
- 25:02in a minute. Let's go, folks, get aboard and a pot of
- 25:12patrol kind of sliced through the black swells with the easy grace of a head
- 25:15waiter after a ten dollar tip, and all the way out it looked as
- 25:18though Mallow was going to be the bright boy of the evening. When we
- 25:22pulled alongside the cab for he made a fast and borderary, it still looked
- 25:26that way. It looked great right up to the point when he Borrow appeared
- 25:30through the porthole in the closed cabin, jerked the door open and went inside.
- 25:36After that, it didn't look so good. Mallow, Come here is
- 25:41this Frank Emery? Yeah, yeah, that's Henley Barr. He's been shot
- 25:45over the hard from up close with a forty five, undoubtedly the one he
- 25:48still has gripped in his hand. There. Yeah, you better not come
- 25:55in, missus Emory, your husband has killed himself. He walked back to
- 26:03the turn and sat down. He Borrow was going through his grim routine inside,
- 26:08and I thought lousy. I stared down vacantly at my feet and only
- 26:14gradually became aware of the little brass cylinder that danced across the deck with every
- 26:18roll of the boat. I picked it up. It was an ejected Cottridge
- 26:22from a forty five. I'd found an empty forty five Cottridge. All at
- 26:30once things began to take shape for me. Bar keep, barrow hole everything
- 26:36I was right. Emory didn't commit suicide after all. Oh the man spot
- 26:40he's right here the gun and is high. No I know, but he
- 26:41was murdered. Now. Look I found this out on deck and the door
- 26:44of this cabin was closed. You remember when a man is shot with a
- 26:47forty five, he drops, he doesn't walk in, close the door and
- 26:48then fall over left. Did Emory have any keys? Nine? Yes,
- 26:52these are his. They're on the ignition by the wheel. Sure, sure,
- 26:55look look it's diamond shaped. One. It matches when I've got in
- 26:57my pocket. Come on out on decky bar and he clear? Clear?
- 27:03Can I see your key to the side door of the factory. But certainly
- 27:04my litt's right here in my pocket. It's not in your pocket because it's
- 27:10here in my hands. Slater, you were so excited when you shot Quiger,
- 27:12ran off and left this sticking in the lock. And here's one for
- 27:15you, missus. Emery. While the Carefree was still tied up with the
- 27:19doc. You stood right here, surprised your husband and the cabin door and
- 27:22shine him. This little Cottridge was ejected back to the stern. But you
- 27:26forgot about that because after you shut him inside and put the gun in his
- 27:30hand, you closed the door. Then you started the motor, locked the
- 27:33wheel and cut the book loose. Don't know what you took your gun?
- 27:41That was nicely bar right. Oh, I wouldn't have believed this. Don't
- 27:45lose your place because you'll have to go over it all again. Don't worry
- 27:48I wound. You see, it's sort of like an equation two pounds of
- 27:52tobacco and two pieces of brass added up to two bodies and two murderers.
- 28:06Well, wall, it beats me that missus memory seemed to be nothing but
- 28:10sweet soft and stay home nights. Yeah yeh. She pulled one of the
- 28:14richest devil crousses on the record, Ibara. She let her husband steal a
- 28:18portune for her and even helped them plan a fake suicide to get away.
- 28:22Then she turned around and used this plan only no fake this time, to
- 28:25kill him so she'd be free to marry Slater. But she didn't want Slater
- 28:29without the money. Right right. As long as August Quick lived, Slater
- 28:33could never be sure of his income. So Slater killed him, and they
- 28:36hung that out on Frank Emery too, and they worked a fast routine and
- 28:41passed the detective right through the middle of it all while Slater killed Quick.
- 28:45I was with Shila, and Slater took me over. Well, she killed
- 28:48Frank, and make a great team in a shell game. Wall. Yeah,
- 28:52but you did all right? Well, see you tomorrow the report,
- 28:56you know. Then I felt I sat alone in Appier for a long time.
- 29:10I watched the waves come in, and gradually my mind got untangled in
- 29:14the treachery and violence that had been wrapped up in all night. And the
- 29:18lady turned out to be the tiger. And then as my thoughts plopped back
- 29:22through the whole mess of the afternoon, when I've been shopping for Christmas cards,
- 29:27I made up my mind to cancel my own. I have an entirely
- 29:32new set for up. I say it pays to advertisement, if that's true,
- 29:37right across the top of my new cards and big block letters. But
- 29:42I have the words goodwill toward men. Who knows. Maybe it'll help anyway,
- 29:52I hope. So the Adventures of Philip barlow created by Raymond Chandler,
- 30:08stars Gerald Moore, and is produced and directed by Norman McDonald, script by
- 30:14Meldonelli, Robert Mitchell and Gene Levin. Featured in tonight's cast were Barbara Fuller,
- 30:19Louis Van Ruten, Bill Ally, and Edgar Barrier Lieutenative Barr was played
- 30:23by Jeff Corey. The special music was conceived and conducted by Richard Uran.
- 30:34Heassured me with us again next week. When Philip marlow says, I walked
- 30:41into it smiling because it had all the coney elements, the weird doctor,
- 30:45the beautiful girl, the gloomy house on the windswept cliff, even the hulking
- 30:51menace. Only one thing was missing, the body. And that's when I
- 30:56stopped smiling, because I turned out to be the cops myself, almost welcome
- 31:17back. The story definitely took quite a few turns from what Marlowe I expected,
- 31:25but I did like the hopeful in It's one of those things that's really
- 31:30fascinating about the radio version of Philip Marlowe is that usually they go ahead and
- 31:37they work that sort of thing into the show. Well we turn now.
- 31:41Listener comments and feedback, and I have this from Cheryl listening to Frank Race,
- 31:48a detective on my iPod, loving the show. Thank you enjoying the
- 31:52podcast. Well, I'm glad you're enjoying the show. And that was from
- 31:56Cheryl on Facebook. All right, well, we will be back on tomorrow
