- 0:08Good afternoon and welcome in Miller and Condon on the air
- 0:10with you live from Big 10 football Media days as we talk
- 0:14the world of sports with you. We got Kirk Ference coming up
- 0:17later today. We'll hear from the Iowa
- 0:19football players that are here. Also a little bit later on,
- 0:22we're going to be talking with Spencer McLaughlin, locked down
- 0:24college football and a whole a lot more.
- 0:27But we come to you from the Mandalay Bay, a little different
- 0:29look than we've had the last couple of days as we were at
- 0:32Circuit Stadium swim now a little more buttoned up.
- 0:35The fun is over. Now it's time to work, but we
- 0:38kick things off with Andy Staples on three Media.
- 0:41He's been all over the place. Great podcast and a great
- 0:43college football scribe as we talked some college football to
- 0:46kick things off. Andy, good to see you.
- 0:48It's been a while a I think I last time I we met in person was
- 0:51probably like 6-7 years ago. So good to see you again.
- 0:53Well, how I was invited to to stadium swim.
- 0:55I mean, come on, I've been over here.
- 0:58That that's my bad. Yeah, this is.
- 0:59So much better. That you got to hang out with PJ
- 1:01Fleck yesterday. We did.
- 1:03It was funny because he was actually sitting right here at
- 1:05this table talking to somebody and we were talking about, we
- 1:09were recording a segment on our show talking about something
- 1:13he'd said on the stage. And I'm sitting there going, OK,
- 1:18I, I'm going to have to be as loud as I normally am on the air
- 1:22and he's going to hear us. And this is going to get, this
- 1:25might get weird, but fortunately my, my Co host Ari Wasserman,
- 1:29just as PJ got up and started walking away, he's like, PJ, PJ
- 1:32come here. And so we just got PJ into the
- 1:35conversation, which was great because I, I think it's so
- 1:38interesting with PJ Fleck because he drives people insane,
- 1:41especially fans of rival programs, especially fans of, of
- 1:44a rival program that might be playing against him for a pig
- 1:47trophy. And so, but here's the thing, he
- 1:51is that guy. Like that's not fake.
- 1:54That is exactly who he is 1,000,000% of the time.
- 1:58And I just thought it was funny because we were doing a segment
- 2:00about PJ Fleck was yelling at us from the stage, and Mike Norvell
- 2:05at ACC Media Days in Charlotte was also yelling at everybody
- 2:07from the stage. But the difference is that's not
- 2:10Mike Norvell's personality, but that is PJ Fleck.
- 2:13And so, you know, we we come back from the clip and I'm just,
- 2:16I, I did the why are we yelling? Why is everyone yelling?
- 2:20And PJ just kind of turns like, what?
- 2:22What are we doing now? It's like, yeah, yeah, we're
- 2:24talking about you. Sorry.
- 2:25You're the guy, so he bothers me now.
- 2:27I grew up an Iowa fan, of course, so, but it's also good
- 2:31to have that rivalry back. So I grew up in North Iowa and
- 2:34it's interesting in our state. Do you have to choose a side?
- 2:36Well, I mean as long. As I'm on the right side of the
- 2:38border, yeah, we're other yeah, we're all good and family in
- 2:41Minneapolis had cousins that went to Minnesota.
- 2:43So you know, I have all that background, but I was so
- 2:45interested you're. Wearing a Minnesota North Star.
- 2:47I am, and I'm a Minnesota sports fan.
- 2:49I'm a Twins fan. I'm a Timberwolves fan.
- 2:52I'm but I'm a Bears fan. That's a long story.
- 2:54Kindergarten 85. You know, that's what Swayze.
- 2:56I I I was at Monday Night Football when the Dolphins beat
- 2:59the Bears. I was seven years old.
- 3:00First time I ever smelled marijuana.
- 3:03And smelled a few times I'm sure after that too.
- 3:06So the Minnesota rivalry is my favorite rivalry for you on a
- 3:10national scale. You think of Iowa and we got
- 3:12Black Friday against Nebraska. Of course the side hawk game and
- 3:15non conference Minnesota. Wisconsin's turned into a
- 3:18tremendous rivalry the last 30 years.
- 3:20If you live in the Quad Cities, it's Illinois.
- 3:23And for people where we originate from is in central
- 3:26Iowa, it's all Iowa, Iowa State. And I tell people that don't
- 3:30know outside of that part, it depends on it.
- 3:33So on a national scale, when you think of that Iowa rivalry, what
- 3:36is the one that jumps to mind for you first?
- 3:39It would probably be Minnesota just because of the history of
- 3:41it. I, I, you know, I'm, I'm a bit
- 3:43of a history buff. So you, you think about because
- 3:45Minnesota, I, I don't think the casual college football fan
- 3:48understands their place in the very way back history of the
- 3:52game because they were, they were a powerhouse very early on.
- 3:56But I, I think that's because you have to border states.
- 3:58But I thought when Nebraska joined the league, that was one
- 4:01of those things where it felt like they'd been annual rivals
- 4:04for 100 years. And it, but it it it was, it was
- 4:08new. But I, I, you know, I covered a
- 4:10few of those Black Friday games. The one last year was really
- 4:13dramatic. I mean, so I, that one I think
- 4:17is, has become my favorite of their rivalry games just because
- 4:22it's always weird. Yeah.
- 4:24And I will find a way. Yeah, almost every single time,
- 4:27including last year with Caleb Johnson.
- 4:30I thought they were done like. Yeah.
- 4:33Start of the fourth quarter, I was like, there's no chance.
- 4:35And, and so I'm watching that simultaneously that with that
- 4:37crazy 8 overtime Georgia Tech game, that's a hell of Black
- 4:41Friday. Let's have a good one again this
- 4:43year. Andy Staples joining us here at
- 4:45Miller and Con as we kick things off from Big 10 Football Media
- 4:48Days. Andy, as we're here at Big 10
- 4:50Media Days, the biggest conversation starting on Tuesday
- 4:52was Tony Battitti talking about the playoff format.
- 4:55Now, I come from the background, grew up a Hawkeye fan, and I try
- 4:58to play it down the middle on the air.
- 5:00But still, that's always a part of me, right?
- 5:02That's always going to be there. When I look at the model, the
- 5:054422111 for Iowa, for Purdue, for Nebraska, for Minnesota, for
- 5:11Wisconsin, for everybody else outside of the blue bloods, this
- 5:14is a great model. And then when I think about.
- 5:17What's the different like here? Let me I want to push.
- 5:19Back on that, yeah. Because the 511 one I think is
- 5:22also good for Iowa and not Purdue, but but Iowa, Nebraska,
- 5:28Minnesota, Wisconsin, Yeah. Because the middle tier, yeah.
- 5:31If you are capable of of competing and being in the mix
- 5:34to be the 6th best team in this version of the Big 10, the 18
- 5:37team Big 10, you're also capable of making a 16 team playoff with
- 5:4111 at largest. It's it's not that different.
- 5:43You just one has this artificial play in game at the end and one
- 5:47doesn't. But The thing is it because
- 5:50somebody asked me when PJ Fleck did his, his contract extension
- 5:55next last week and he's he's extended till 2030.
- 5:58They're like, OK, what's success there?
- 5:59Like one playoff appearance like you, you make the playoff
- 6:02between now and then. That's that's what you're paying
- 6:05for. And like Iowa, I'd say, I think
- 6:08actually Iowa and Nebraska, if Wisconsin could get back to what
- 6:11they were, it's more than that. You're you're going to, you're
- 6:14probably going to the playoff twice every 10 years in in any
- 6:17either of the 16 team playbacks. I just look at it as it's
- 6:20something attainable, like we were talking yesterday, in the
- 6:23next two decades, how many times is Iowa going to play in the Big
- 6:2710 Championship as it's currently constructed?
- 6:29Once. Maybe.
- 6:30Maybe in 20 years. Yeah, 'cause I'm trying to think
- 6:33that 2015 Iowa team that would have been the type that that
- 6:35would have. Been 2009, 2002, but that was
- 6:38also a different era, right? We didn't have the four West
- 6:40Coast schools. I think both Ohio State and
- 6:43Michigan have elevated even from what they were at that time.
- 6:45So the reality is it's something attainable.
- 6:48But being the 4th or 5th best team in the Big 10, which will
- 6:51get you into the playoffs. It'll still get you.
- 6:53In either of those either of those formats, that is certainly
- 6:57attainable. Yeah, Maybe I think of it this
- 6:59way. And what I saw last year from
- 7:02South Carolina for at a national landscape, you kind of look at
- 7:05the totality of what they did. Their resume wasn't good.
- 7:08Saw what happened to Illinois. They weren't even part of
- 7:10conversation at 9:00 and 3:00. And that year that Iowa is 9 and
- 7:14three, the year that I think. There's a universe this year
- 7:20where where Iowa and Nebraska could be for a playoff berth
- 7:23depending on how things go, 'cause I actually the Iowa, Iowa
- 7:27and Texas A&M for me are the two teams that if you look at their
- 7:29schedules, they are a trap game for multiple, multiple teams.
- 7:33And, and if they win some of those games, they're going to be
- 7:36in the mix for playoffs. Ten and two with the schedule
- 7:38they have and it's crazy. 10 and 2 they are in.
- 7:40Well, there's no question. You brought up 2015.
- 7:42They didn't play Ohio State, they didn't play Michigan.
- 7:44And what, all season long they were ripped because of that.
- 7:47They don't play Ohio State or Michigan this year.
- 7:49It's OK, they play. Oregon and Penn State, they
- 7:50play. Oregon, Penn State, Indiana,
- 7:53Iowa State, all those teams win double digit games last year.
- 7:56Plus they have to go to Wisconsin.
- 7:57Plus they got to play for the Pigs.
- 7:58Plus, they got to play Brad Friday against Nebraska.
- 7:59The the side hawk game has become a a really fun one and I
- 8:02think I think Matt Campbell does a phenomenal job.
- 8:04So I, I'm, I'm excited to see that night.
- 8:07I, I like that. That means so much now.
- 8:09And I, I Rocco Beck, Mark Gronowski early in the season.
- 8:12I'll take it. Yes, you're a Gronowski guy.
- 8:14So I. Am excited about this.
- 8:16It's so interesting because you know, the regional people that
- 8:20we have on the Big 10 people that we have on, it feels like
- 8:23there's more tepidation kind of in that regional, but national
- 8:26guys like you feel like. Because he was really good at
- 8:30South Dakota State. What?
- 8:31He's big, he's physical, he's. Dynamic.
- 8:33He's athletic. I was talking to Tom Caker just
- 8:36now and and he, he the comp he gave me was Riley Leonard.
- 8:40I think he may have a better arm than Ryan.
- 8:42I think so, too. So, yeah.
- 8:43And they might not be as fast. But the The thing is that, you
- 8:47know, with Iowa, the last truly competent quarterback play Iowa
- 8:52got was CJ Beathard. And CJ Beathard's better athlete
- 8:55than people realize. Oh, absolutely.
- 8:56And so I think you take this and this guy's a better athlete than
- 9:01CJ Beathard. I think, you know, you go back
- 9:03to Brad Banks and then what he could do competent quarterback
- 9:08play where you're going to have a good offensive line, you're
- 9:11going to have a decent running game, that's you're going to
- 9:15have a defense that that stops people.
- 9:17You're going to have great special teams.
- 9:20I mean, come on, that's all you have to do.
- 9:23And are they going to, Is it going to make them capable of
- 9:26beating Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State?
- 9:31Like every time they play? No, right.
- 9:34Does it make them capable of beating one of those teams every
- 9:36once in a while? Yep.
- 9:37Sure does. And that gap that kind of grown
- 9:41over the last five years just because how bad the offense got,
- 9:44it feels like it's coming back the the other way.
- 9:46And that's the thing, like I just, I always felt so, so bad
- 9:50for Phil Parker and for for Woods and, and those guys that,
- 9:54I mean, they're, they're so good at their jobs and they had to
- 9:59carry this abysmal offense every year.
- 10:02And now if, if it can just be average, that's a team that can
- 10:07make the playoff a lot of years. Yeah, with that defense, that
- 10:11special teams and an average offense.
- 10:13It's an exciting time. Now you're at Big 12 football
- 10:15Media Days as well. Let's talk a little bit just
- 10:17with the Big 12 in general, and I don't know what it is and
- 10:21maybe it's just last season. What, the Arizona State coming
- 10:23out of nowhere and doing what they did.
- 10:25I can't wrap my arms around any of the top teams.
- 10:27I can't looking at the betting markets, I can't.
- 10:30Kansas State, Avery Johnson. Yeah, there's flashes.
- 10:33I I, I will tell you, the coaches, if you ask them, they
- 10:37love Kansas State, do that. They a lot of it's respect for
- 10:40Chris Kleiman and having, you know, having played him
- 10:43understanding exactly. Yeah.
- 10:45But I mean, he develops people really well.
- 10:48They're always good on the line of scrimmage.
- 10:50So I think that's part of it. But it's going to be what
- 10:55mishmash of everything because I think there's eight teams you
- 10:58can make a very valid case for. Texas Tech is the one
- 11:01everybody's watching because they spent so much on their
- 11:03roster. And it is probably the best
- 11:05roster on paper in the league. But like, TCU is significantly
- 11:09better this year. Baylor should be pretty good
- 11:11this year. Baylor is one of the toughest
- 11:12teams to to beat the Big 12 at the end of last season. 6 in a
- 11:15row, Arizona State brings Sam Levitt back.
- 11:17Sam Levitt is is probably the best quarterback in a deep
- 11:20quarterback. League, that league is.
- 11:21Great for Avery Johnson, you mentioned in Kansas State.
- 11:23I think he's interesting because I remember watching him as a
- 11:26freshman and they would bring him in as a kind of a change of
- 11:28pace with Will Howard. He was so fast.
- 11:31And so I was thinking, OK, are we dealing with like a Lamar
- 11:34Jackson type because he's that fast?
- 11:37And he didn't look that fast last year because a lot of it
- 11:40and it felt like a lot of it was kind of processing stuff and
- 11:43like the BYU gave me through some terrible interceptions.
- 11:46But what if he makes a jump year one to year 2?
- 11:49That's that's where guys do. I mean, you know, like the LSU
- 11:54with the Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels.
- 11:56Like if you come to me after 2018 Joe Burrow or after 2022
- 12:00Jayden Daniels, I'm like, OK, they're fine.
- 12:02Yeah, but not what they were gonna.
- 12:04Be Yeah, they're OK. Yeah.
- 12:06And Rocco Beck is more than OK. Yep.
- 12:09I'm just surprised that Iowa State is that far behind.
- 12:12And the betting? Those two receivers, that's,
- 12:14yeah, that's really all because they were both really good.
- 12:16That's the thing though, Campbell and that crew, they
- 12:18have done such a great job of getting those transfer guys.
- 12:21So they bring in Seoul, they bring in the kid from UCF,
- 12:23Townsend. They think that they fix it.
- 12:26But you're right. Jalen Knoll last year won the
- 12:29Iowa game for him without. They don't win that game.
- 12:31They probably get blown out without him on the field.
- 12:33He and that that was not a series where the receipt where
- 12:35any receivers usually made a huge difference.
- 12:38So the the Central Florida game, I don't think they win that game
- 12:40without it. That is a huge and and you'd
- 12:42said two guys, two of those guys.
- 12:44So I guess that's the knock Defensively, they're always
- 12:48going to be good with Haycock. I mean, that guy's just an
- 12:49absolute Wizard of what he does, and we got a couple of good.
- 12:52Everybody's stealing. Everybody's stealing his and his
- 12:55base defense and and putting their own spin on it.
- 12:58I, I was wondering if that was going to hurt them defensively
- 13:01just because they're no, they're not really a change up.
- 13:04Everybody's seeing a version of the Haycock defense now,
- 13:07especially in that league, but it hasn't stopped them from
- 13:09being good. So it's it's it's pretty
- 13:11impressive. But I talked to Campbell a
- 13:13couple weeks ago. He's he's very confident.
- 13:16They did I the the revenue share thing for a place like Iowa
- 13:20State, I think it's huge because it would be very hard in the in
- 13:25the system that was 2021 to 25 to keep really good players at
- 13:31Iowa State. I mean, you have to, you have to
- 13:33work really hard to raise the money.
- 13:35Now you have the money to keep the people you want to keep.
- 13:38You probably can't go out and and big, you know, spend huge in
- 13:42free agency. Can't be taxes.
- 13:43But that's not really what you what you do, right?
- 13:46That's not Matt Campbell style anyway.
- 13:47So I, I told him, I, I said when I was talking to him, I was
- 13:50like, I'll take you with, you know, $12 million from the
- 13:52school over somebody with a $30 million budget because I over
- 13:56all over most people because he evaluates so well.
- 14:00Do you have a dark horse in the Big 12?
- 14:01I mean outside of that top 6/7. I don't even know if it's a
- 14:04dark, I don't think you'd call anybody a dark horse because I,
- 14:08I think it's going to be Utah, but Utah is one of those that's
- 14:12just kind of generally accepted as pretty good.
- 14:15They have two NFL offensive tackles, Spencer Finno, their
- 14:18right tackle is probably going to be the the first alignment
- 14:22off the board. And then you've got Lomu as the
- 14:24left tackle. He's very good too.
- 14:26So I, I don't know if he's been first rounder, but but a very
- 14:28high draft pick and they're built on the line of scrimmage
- 14:33to win the old PAC 12. So they were built and these
- 14:37guys were recruited. All their older guys were
- 14:38recruited to play in the PAC 12, to win a league that had Oregon
- 14:41and Washington and USC in it. Nobody else in the Big 12 is
- 14:44built that way. Yeah.
- 14:45And so they bring in a quarterback named Devin Dampier
- 14:47from New Mexico, who was a phenomenal runner last year,
- 14:521100 yards rushing. He's not the best thrower in the
- 14:55world. And and the one the guy I would
- 14:57compare it to is remember Nick Marshall at Auburn?
- 15:00Oh, yeah, absolutely. Took him to the national title
- 15:02game in 2013. Played a great game up in
- 15:05Manhattan, KS, I think on a Thursday night the next next
- 15:08year. But Nick wound up playing
- 15:10cornerback in the NFL. He was not a great throw like
- 15:14the year the year he got done. They had a couple receivers who
- 15:18were NFL prospects on their pro day.
- 15:20They had Aga, who had played for Gus at Arkansas State, throw
- 15:26throw to them because Nick, they didn't want Nick Marshall
- 15:28throwing to them. So but he was such a threat to
- 15:32run the ball that he was throwing the wide open
- 15:35receivers. And I think that might be what
- 15:36you have with with Utah this year because the quarterback
- 15:39will be able to run, the backs will be able to run, and you're
- 15:41going to have to play them 8-9 in the box and and pray that you
- 15:46can cover everybody one-on-one. Full circle finish up with you
- 15:49Andy. As we'll hear from Kirk parents
- 15:51today, August 1st will turn 70 years old, most veteran,
- 15:55obviously coaching by long ways. Now at the AT1 program, 27 years
- 16:00now at Iowa. It started my sophomore year at
- 16:03Iowa and here we are today. What was it he got?
- 16:06He got hired what, like 2 days after Bob Stoops got hired?
- 16:08Is that? Do you know the story behind
- 16:10that? I'll fill you in, he tells his
- 16:12idol. I'll tell you.
- 16:13So I was a student at the University of Florida.
- 16:14I'd been a walk on in Florida, got yelled at a lot by Bob
- 16:17Stoops when he was in DC because I was, I was a, you know, scout
- 16:21team offensive lineman. I had transitioned to working
- 16:25for the school paper at that point.
- 16:26And so Bob, I actually talked to Bob's mom the night he met, he
- 16:31had met with Joe Castiglione, the Oklahoma ADI think they'd
- 16:35met in Atlanta. And obviously everybody's is he
- 16:37going to go to Iowa? Is he going to?
- 16:39And so he takes the the Oklahoma job and and because, you know,
- 16:44at that time, I'm 20, I don't know, I don't know anything.
- 16:46I don't I don't appreciate the history of oh, Bob Stoops should
- 16:49be going to Iowa. Yeah, that's the easy one.
- 16:52So the way that I always heard the story as he came to Iowa
- 16:56interview and anticipated he was just going to get the offer,
- 17:00they had one more interview left and Bob Bullsby, who was the
- 17:02athletic director at the time said we are going to do this.
- 17:06It was somebody that Hayden wanted us to do.
- 17:08It was Kirk Ference. Bob Stoops then said listen to
- 17:10Hayden. Absolutely.
- 17:12And Bob Stoops said, well, I am going to go visit Oklahoma
- 17:16without a job offer. It was understood and that's
- 17:19what happened. Now the good news is Bob Bullsby
- 17:21wanted to hire Terry Allen. I think it all worked out.
- 17:24And so that worked out pretty well in the grand scheme of
- 17:28things. But you know how it is.
- 17:29Here we are 27 years later and people still talk about that
- 17:32story and what would have been. We've had a pretty good over
- 17:35these last 27 years. Oh yeah.
- 17:36I think I, I think Kirk understood that the last few in
- 17:41the situation with Brian, I think probably shadows it a
- 17:45little bit. But that said, come out of that,
- 17:51have this, what we just talked about, have a dynamic
- 17:54quarterback, potentially very competent offense.
- 17:57Yeah, match it with your excellent defense and all these
- 18:00excellent special teams make a playoff run.
- 18:03Yeah. Then everybody forgets all that.
- 18:04Yeah, absolutely goes away. You fixed it.
- 18:06He needs one more of those. Yeah, he needs one more.
- 18:09And if it happens, wait, you just saw him?
- 18:13He's in great shape. He, he doesn't, Yeah, he's he.
- 18:16He's not one of those people who looks his age and.
- 18:18He doesn't golf. Yeah, he he doesn't.
- 18:21Kyle Winningham at Utah is very similar.
- 18:22Yes, he's one of them. He and Mike Gundy, I think, are
- 18:26the the next two most senior coaches in in college football.
- 18:30But they're five years, you know, removed from from where
- 18:34Gundy or from where, where Kirk got hired.
- 18:36So, yeah, I, I just, it's funny because everybody keeps saying,
- 18:39well, when when's he going to retire?
- 18:41I have no idea. Yeah, I he he looks like he
- 18:43could do this for a long time. And he doesn't have any other
- 18:46hobbies, so unless he's going to Iowa City City High High School
- 18:49and coaching offensive line, I don't know what he's going to do
- 18:52to fill that time. And he'll just keep doing it and
- 18:54if he keeps doing it at a good level.
- 18:56Yeah, I was, I Reese Morgan, who used to be an assistant at Iowa.
- 18:59I was, I was always fascinated by him because I, I the first
- 19:02time I met him, I was like, how do you, how do you watch an 8
- 19:05man game and figure out that guys going to be an NFL
- 19:07defensive end? Like how do you do?
- 19:09That yeah, it's a different world, right?
- 19:11But I like. I imagine Kirk doing that just
- 19:14for fun. Yes, that's his fun.
- 19:16That's it. Hey, this has been fun, Andy.
- 19:18Appreciate it. Andy Staples on Three Media.

- 20:01Thank you. We take a time out here on
- 20:03Miller and Condon as we are underway from Big 10 Football
- 20:06Media Days. We got Kurt Ferris coming up a
- 20:08little bit later on. We'll hear from the three
- 20:10players. From the Hawkeyes that are here
- 20:12also a little bit later with Lucas quick timeout, we're back
- 20:15with more on the other side, It's Miller and Condon on the
- 20:18Iowa Sports Radio Network. Back with you live from media
- 20:29Radio row at Big 10 Football Media Day as it's Miller and
- 20:32Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 20:34We'll take you up until 2:00 today, then it's off the bench.
- 20:37Lucas Strain, he is warming up in the bullpen getting ready and
- 20:41looks like he is struggling a little bit over there as well.
- 20:44Maybe we stayed out a little bit too late last night, but he's
- 20:47got Kirk Ference coming up. He'll also hear from the three
- 20:49players from the Iowa Hawkeyes that will be here at Big 10
- 20:53Football Media Days. Ethan Herkett is going to be
- 20:55here, Logan Jones and also Cohen Entriger and all three of them
- 20:58are also going to be joining Lucas a little bit later on in
- 21:01his program. That'll come up at about 3:15
- 21:03Central time and Kirk Ference at about.
- 21:07Let's see. Let's see if I can do the math.
- 21:08245 is when Kirks going to be stopping by.
- 21:12I believe he'll be on the podium though at 1:30 and we will bring
- 21:16that to you a little bit later on.
- 21:18We run the Big 10 Network and we'll have the audio for you.
- 21:20Speaking of audio, we got a little bit of opportunity to
- 21:23hear from Beth Getz earlier this morning.
- 21:25The Iowa athletic director, Lucas was over there and was
- 21:28able to get that audio for us and we'll play that for you
- 21:32right now. Little bit later on in the show,
- 21:33Spencer McLaughlin from Lockdown College Football, he's going to
- 21:36stop by. We'll talk with Spencer and dive
- 21:38into some of the big topics that are happening here at Big 10
- 21:40Football Media Days. Had to move a couple of things
- 21:42around. If you saw our initial tweet
- 21:45that we sent out a little bit earlier on, but let's get to
- 21:47that right now. Beth Getz, That's the Iowa
- 21:48athletic director from earlier this morning.
- 21:51So how's that gone so far with the revenue share and you guys
- 21:55been able to distribute some money, I assume?
- 21:58Yeah, you know what, we've been really pleased.
- 22:00It's gone really smoothly in terms of the operationalizing of
- 22:05just making that distribution for for many of our athletes.
- 22:08We made the first payment on July 1st and no, no issues and
- 22:14it went relatively smoothly. Smoothly.
- 22:16We I think it's already been reported work.
- 22:19So they were really good partner and a lot of leg work and things
- 22:23like that to get it uploaded. But when when it's smoothly,
- 22:25it's been difficult just in terms of how the NCAA is
- 22:30operating and the collectives are going to be.
- 22:32Gone. And now they're back.
- 22:34Like just. Managing that and then talking
- 22:36to Brad and getting all that, you know, handled a little more
- 22:40clarity would obviously be nice. But you know, at the end of the
- 22:44day, I mean, right now, all of that really just lies, you know,
- 22:47in, in terms of the, the settlement agreement.
- 22:49So that's working in with the, with the plaintiffs lawyers and
- 22:52trying to figure out what that that piece is going to play out.
- 22:55So, you know, it's helpful because, you know, I think Brad
- 22:58and I have a good relationship. We talk all the, you know, we
- 23:00talk all the time and just try to get comfortable saying, Hey,
- 23:04we're going to make the best decision we can today with the
- 23:06information we know and then pivot if we buy something else.
- 23:10And, you know, probably since COVID, I think that's the way
- 23:13we've all had to operate in athletics for a while.
- 23:15And so you'll have to get pretty comfortable and having a few
- 23:17contingency plans and, and just waiting to make plans to, to
- 23:21adjust them in, in another six weeks or so.
- 23:24How do you guys adjust budgetarily?
- 23:27Because there was a flood of money that came into the market
- 23:30this spring and now it's going to potentially have to draw back
- 23:33a little bit, I would think. Tell me more about specifically.
- 23:38Yeah, just like there seemed just generally there was a flood
- 23:40of money that came into the the players this spring.
- 23:44I know a lot of people were rushing to get deals done before
- 23:47the house thing was done. And now it's going to now.
- 23:50Yeah. And now it's going to
- 23:52potentially regress a little bit.
- 23:55How do you handle those situations?
- 23:57Well, I'm not sure if we know exactly if it's going to regress
- 24:00or not. You know, I think it goes to,
- 24:02you know, driving revenue has always been a priority and, you
- 24:06know, and at this level of college athletics, it's going to
- 24:08continue to be. So the different avenues that we
- 24:11have to do that, obviously being able to do a good chunk of that
- 24:14in house now is helpful. And so we've got a lot of
- 24:18different strategies going on there.
- 24:20But depending on how settlement terms play out with collectors,
- 24:24we'll have to see if there's something we can continue to do
- 24:26and to support, you know, from a third party, whether that's in a
- 24:30true collective form or something we want that into
- 24:33going forward. But it's, I mean, it's a lot of
- 24:36resource. We all know that is a component
- 24:38of it. But, you know, I think we're,
- 24:39we're going to be well positioned to, to, to make sure
- 24:42we're, we're at the table and can execute, You know, will
- 24:45every athlete receive revenue sharing money on campus or is it
- 24:50going to be exclusive to a couple of sports or it's every
- 24:56athlete on our campus will not, will not receive revenue share.
- 25:00We've made decisions based on the first year.
- 25:03So we really looked at this as a snapshot time with the ability
- 25:06again to to pivot as we needed to and so certainly focused on
- 25:09our revenue sports doesn't make me the sprinkling of others
- 25:14scholarship cases that as well. So you know, but we'll have to
- 25:18see how that plays, how we need to adjust to the market, to what
- 25:21our peers are doing, etcetera. How?
- 25:23Many sports. We'll start from moving targets.
- 25:29So we're not you know, at the end of the year we'll we'll have
- 25:32to see Clearly we're focused on men's women's basketball and you
- 25:36know, football and wrestling is a priority force as well.
- 25:39But it'll be a smattering of other individuals, I think
- 25:42along. When you all announced the the
- 25:44risers for and women's basketball, how did that idea
- 25:48kind of materialize and take shape?
- 25:49Yeah, well, I mean, you know, as we've been exploring the
- 25:51renovations to Carver Hawkeye Arena, moving the students
- 25:54closer certainly been a piece of that.
- 25:56He'd love to start that tomorrow and haven't executed for this
- 25:58season. But we just can't move quite
- 26:00that fast on that major project. And so we wanted to figure out
- 26:03what we could do temporarily to get the students closer.
- 26:07And so I know our staff loves it when I do this, but I was out
- 26:11pacing and marking off with, with with my feet on the on that
- 26:14baseline and we grabbed our facility staff and something I
- 26:17think we, you know, let's try to strategize and see what we can
- 26:20do here. And so they do, as always, they
- 26:22do a great job of trying to find a temporary solution and we'll
- 26:25see how it plays out. But I think it's AI think it'll
- 26:28be a positive and we're excited just to see if it changes the
- 26:31atmosphere. Beth.
- 26:32What are your thoughts about the current playoff format and all
- 26:35the discussions around, you know, the SEC going to 9 games?
- 26:38And 4422, just kind of where do you stand?
- 26:40On on that right now. Yeah, there's there's quite a
- 26:42few discussions going on in here.
- 26:44And Reid, you know, I think, you know, for us and as we think
- 26:48about what's best for the Big 10 and what's best for Iowa, you
- 26:51know, first and foremost, I think it's important that we all
- 26:53have access to get in the championship.
- 26:55And we we want to make sure that we're the regular season means
- 26:57something. And so, you know, as I think
- 27:00you've heard, I go to handled times, making sure that in the
- 27:03selection process there's there's something that makes
- 27:05sense. I think it's harder to do with a
- 27:07lot of at large bids at the moment.
- 27:09We run in human scheduling, You know, I like our regular season
- 27:13games really meaning something. I like them being irrelevant
- 27:16later in the the season, which I think the expanded playoff is
- 27:19already done. And, you know, there's a lot of
- 27:22nuance there. And and certainly, you know, the
- 27:24Big 10 might not be in the same place as everybody else in the
- 27:27league, but I think, you know, we'll continue to have those
- 27:29conversations and try to work to to get to a good place.
- 27:32Is there a concern that with CSC and all the and maybe limiting
- 27:37nil funds to players, fumbling them to through the school, that
- 27:41it drives it underground again like it used to be in the old
- 27:43days? And is do you feel that concern,
- 27:47you know, that it that the underground starts going again?
- 27:51I think that I think there's always bad actors in any system,
- 27:57whether or not the rules, you know, maybe encourage that more
- 28:03frequently or not. I think people that are going to
- 28:05try to find a way to work around the system and feel like that's
- 28:09a way to get an advantage are going to do that regardless of
- 28:11where this lands. So certainly enough how we plan
- 28:14to operate at Iowa, we'd like to see some structure,
- 28:18accountability and and a framework that we can all
- 28:21understand and live by and try to figure out how we, you know,
- 28:24create a strategy that works for us with it.
- 28:27But I think we'll, I think we, you'll see that when when
- 28:30people. I know yesterday, the day he was
- 28:37mad. And where do you think standing?
- 28:40Kind of. Collectively with the the
- 28:42playoff. Are you?
- 28:43Kind of lockstep with Tony. On his ideas or is is it
- 28:47splintered off? Is there are there?
- 28:49Is there a faction that prefers a different?
- 28:51Method rather than Tony's preferred 4422.
- 28:55My experience and in the conversations we've had, I mean
- 28:58Tony is an ambassador for what we want in the room and water
- 29:01coaches want. So he takes into account
- 29:04everybody's opinion. It's not, not that he obviously
- 29:07doesn't bring us strategy and suggestion, but he puts forward
- 29:10what we have asked him or presidents or coaches have asked
- 29:14him to do. So I haven't seen any seen any
- 29:16of that. I mean, to be honest, I don't
- 29:18know how much detailed discussion we're having at the
- 29:21moment. I mean, it's really a matter of
- 29:24let's see what these other format ideas might look like,
- 29:27talk about it when they're presented, when we when they
- 29:30give some detail about what the selection committee with the
- 29:34criteria might look like in a revamp thing, we'll consider
- 29:37that. So we'll adjust as we kind of
- 29:39go. I know previously you have been
- 29:41in the feasibility kind of portion with Carver renovations.
- 29:44Is that are you still, have you made progress with that or where
- 29:47you at with that At this point? We are making really good
- 29:51progress in our fundraising efforts.
- 29:54And so, you know, I think we're taking some steps there and, and
- 29:57the more steps we take that it'll allow us to come back and
- 30:00start to advance, you know, advance that project a little
- 30:03bit. So, you know, we've got a lot of
- 30:05work to do. It's a lot of resource that you
- 30:08have to put into to that facade and to make the improvements
- 30:11that we need. But it'll be an important, you
- 30:13know, it's important for many reasons.
- 30:15We've got graduation there. The building needs a lot, serves
- 30:17our fans really more than just search student athletes, but
- 30:21multiple sports and we need that facility to be standing and
- 30:24service everybody for another 40 years.
- 30:26What are the highest priorities in such of renovation or
- 30:31improvements? I think there's probably a few.
- 30:33I mean, one, there are some things that are just, oh, 43
- 30:37years and you're going to have to do some replacing and see if
- 30:39that, you know, that sort of upkeep is going to have to
- 30:41happen. And so you got that component
- 30:44first. But, you know, some other things
- 30:46are just how we best service something, anything from
- 30:48restrooms to how do we figure out to navigate the congestion,
- 30:53you know, that are Concord, which is we need to replace the
- 30:55entire bowl. How do we get the students
- 30:57closer? All those things are really key.
- 31:00But the other piece, it probably goes to the question about why
- 31:03are you still continuing to think about the facility project
- 31:06at all? Is that as a it's one of our key
- 31:08revenue drivers. And right now we just don't have
- 31:12enough opportunity in there to to drive revenue through
- 31:16Caribbean seating and through the way that, you know, many
- 31:18fans want to enjoy games these days.
- 31:21And so that'll be a big piece of the the revenue.
- 31:24Do you think that if you get such a renovation done, then
- 31:28you'd be the arena would be more marketable for concerts
- 31:32etcetera? I think that's certainly a
- 31:34possibility. I've read the long list on them
- 31:37for many of you events, some of those concerts, I mean you have
- 31:39some boy, you had some good artists that were in that
- 31:42facility. But I think that would certainly
- 31:43help and it would be something we would we would.
- 31:46Have you seen an uptick in men's basketball ticket sales or
- 31:50requests for season tickets for next year?
- 31:52We had, we had, you know, we had a lot of deposits for men's
- 31:55basketball that came out right away.
- 31:56And we're obviously on a sale now and season tickets and above
- 32:00year over year when we're working for some really positive
- 32:04momentum. OK.
- 32:05Thank you, guys. So that's Beth Guest from a
- 32:10little bit earlier this morning at Media Days here in Las Vegas.
- 32:15I'm hanging out with Jacob Worthen.
- 32:17You got it right? Yeah, you did.
- 32:19All right. So Jacob is with us.
- 32:21He is with the DI. KRUI.
- 32:24K All right, so radio guy over there in Iowa City and so you're
- 32:30in Vegas, which is pretty cool. You didn't get sent here by the
- 32:35radio station or is this something you did on your own?
- 32:37This is something I did on my own.
- 32:38I was kind of looking at the website for the big 10 media
- 32:43days and I saw a media application.
- 32:44I was like, you know what it was a similar experience me and my
- 32:48sports director Aiden words had in the spring because we do a
- 32:54wrestling podcast together down in Iowa City and we're he just
- 32:58applied for us for media credentials on a whim.
- 33:00He's like, hey, worse they say is no, and then we got approved,
- 33:03but he had a spring break trip. So I spent my spring break in
- 33:06Philly covering nationals and then I saw this.
- 33:09I was like worst they can say is no, That's right, and then got
- 33:12approved and now I'm here in Vegas.
- 33:13Oh, that's awesome. So you're a wrestling guy.
- 33:16I grew up in Osage wrestling community.
- 33:18I was a terrible wrestler, one in 23 my career, but I love
- 33:20wrestling as awful as I was at it.
- 33:23A lot of twalt going on with that Hawkeye program and latest
- 33:28and other guy's not going to be making his way there.
- 33:31Where do you stand right now on the Iowa wrestling program and
- 33:33kind of where they are going forward with Penn State, the
- 33:36behemoth that they are, The way that Oklahoma State's now
- 33:39spending money and kind of at least the near future of Iowa
- 33:43wrestling. I mean, I want to stay positive,
- 33:46but I'm also very realistic. The tide and landscape of
- 33:49wrestling is shifting and you're seeing that a lot with Oklahoma
- 33:52State. Whether or not Penn State is
- 33:56able to bounce back from certain comeuppance with Carter Sterochi
- 34:03and all of those allegations, we'll see because if things come
- 34:07out as true, you could see a new changing of the helm there at
- 34:10Penn State. I don't want to say anything for
- 34:12sure, but it can happen. I've seen it happen.
- 34:16As far as Iowa wrestling goes, I love Tom Brands.
- 34:20Tom is a good guy. Ever since I met him at Media
- 34:23Days last year, he was respectful enough.
- 34:28Reach out, give me a couple of inner interviews, cast great
- 34:32guy. But I think it's still a very
- 34:35old school approach to wrestling when it's more changing of the
- 34:40times when old school may not be the way to go.
- 34:44And I'm I'm glad he held his ground with Bo Bassett and the
- 34:49regional training center. You know, there's certain things
- 34:52you can do, certain things you can't do.
- 34:53And he held his, he stuck to his guns and held his ground.
- 34:57It does it hurt seeing the number one recruit go?
- 34:59Yeah, absolutely. But props to brands for standing
- 35:02his ground. I think you just got to look
- 35:07into it a little bit more with the recruiting aspect and now
- 35:10with the house settlement under our belts.
- 35:12How is that going to shape for? I mean, in Iowa it's revenue
- 35:16sport, but elsewhere it's not really a revenue sport.
- 35:20Yeah, it's a different time. And you know, all those other
- 35:23sports, all the Olympic sport, what kind of the future of them
- 35:26outside of the top tier programs?
- 35:28You know, you look at sports like men's gymnastics, it's down
- 35:30to what, 18 programs I think at the D1 level.
- 35:32And any kind of concerned as a wrestling fan of what the future
- 35:35is going to be. Hey, Jacob, appreciate you
- 35:37stopping by. Good talking to you.
- 35:38For people out there worthy, where can they catch your work?
- 35:41You can catch my work. I just started up a new podcast
- 35:44with a couple military buddies of mine.
- 35:45We're talking NFL and college football.
- 35:47That's a gridiron and grid on Spotify as well as Facebook and
- 35:50YouTube. If you are interested in my
- 35:53wrestling podcast, it's Pin to Win on Spotify.
- 35:56Otherwise, my socials are pretty much just you find me on X at
- 35:59Jacob Werthen 21. I've been covering some stuff
- 36:02around here. Asked Coach Dan Lanning and
- 36:05James Franklin how they feel about Rd. tests coming to Iowa.
- 36:09Our Instagram. Jacob Worthen, TikTok J Worthen.
- 36:13But yeah, that's where you can find me.
- 36:14I'll be doing a radio show on KRUI on Sundays.
- 36:17TuneIn and listen. That's awesome.
- 36:18Appreciate it. Thank you, Jacob.
- 36:19Thank you, Trent. All right, we'll take a quick
- 36:21time out here. More from Big 10 Football Media

- 36:52sprinkled in as well. Kirk's going to take the podium
- 36:55coming up here at 1:30 and we'll bring that to you live coming up
- 36:59in just a little bit. But as well, we put a wrap on
- 37:02our #1 Spencer Mclaughlin's going to kick off our number 2
- 37:05with us. Spencer runs locked on college
- 37:07football, was also locked on Oregon.
- 37:11So talks a lot about the Ducks. And we're going to talk about
- 37:13that Iowa, Oregon matchup. We're going to get into that a
- 37:15little bit more and get his certainly perspective on when
- 37:19Oregon comes to town. What what's it going to be?
- 37:22What's the best game time? You know, you got the early body
- 37:24clock. We've talked about that before.
- 37:26You wanted an 11 AM game. Do you wanted a night game?
- 37:29Thinking what happened with Oregon a year ago when they had
- 37:31to make the trip to Madison and struggled in that game and and
- 37:34easily could have gone the other way.
- 37:35So we'll talk about that. We'll talk a lot of Big 10
- 37:37football and college football as a whole coming up here with
- 37:40Spencer McLaughlin. Do start our number 2.
- 37:44Tyler Allen is back with us in the studio.
- 37:48Tyler, I'm just guessing. I don't know for sure.
- 37:52Were you a Hulk Hogan guy? Because we're about the same
- 37:54age. I got to guess the news today.
- 37:57Was it devastating to you? Hulk Hogan passed me away.
- 37:59Yeah, You know, when you, when you come down to it, as we get
- 38:02older and we get more information, a lot more of our
- 38:05heroes are going to die and stuff.
- 38:06And and obviously I've watched like the cartoon with like the
- 38:09junkyard dog and Rowdy Roddy Piper back in the day with the
- 38:14Iron Sheik. And I mean, yeah, I mean when
- 38:17you're growing up and stuff that those guys are, are heroes and
- 38:21everything and whatever I feel about him now.
- 38:23He is a. Icon of wrestling and obviously
- 38:27a lot of a lot of people are sad that he's gone.
- 38:30I am sad that he's gone. It's it's a blow, man.
- 38:32It's Ozzy earlier this week, too, you know.
- 38:38It's been yeah, kid of the 80s, Theo Huxtable.
- 38:40I mean, it yeah, comes in threes.
- 38:42And you talk about for us two kids of the 80s, I mean, this
- 38:45has been just a a devastating weekend, yes, personal things
- 38:48aside with Hulk Hogan and we leave that to the side.
- 38:51We just talk about the entertainer and and that was an
- 38:54era. You know, we got Lucas here and
- 38:56trying to explain, you know, the importance of Saturday Night
- 38:59Live, a main event that we got, you know, things like that.
- 39:01And just the opportunity it was, it was absolutely incredible
- 39:05that that we were able to, you know, get something like that.
- 39:09Look, I stopped watching wrestling a long time ago.
- 39:11But you're right. I think you said it perfectly.
- 39:13And an absolute icon, a guy that was just a huge part of the
- 39:18consciousness of just people like us that grew up, people in
- 39:21their 40s, fifties now that grew up at that time that he was.
- 39:25It felt like even in a sporting world, he was just larger than
- 39:28life. Yeah, just larger than life and
- 39:30and you can't deny that, you know, it was just there, there
- 39:32were, they were odds almost to us when we were growing up, you
- 39:35know. I absolutely 71 years old Hulk
- 39:41Hogan passing away today. Hour in the books.
- 39:44We got one more to go. We'll kick things off Spencer
- 39:46Mclaughlin's going to join us from lockdown College football.
- 39:49Kirk Ference coming up at 1:30. A busy hour number two.
- 39:53Stick right there. We're back with more on the Iowa
- 39:55Sports Radio Network.
