Latest / Foul Territory / Ken Rosenthal’s Inside Scoop: Trade Deadline negotiations, Yankees w/o Aaron Judge, Conforto’s comeback
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: And here he is after senior insider Ken Rosenthal for
- 0:08Speaker 1: the Inside Scoop.
- 0:09Speaker 2: What do you have for us? Ken?
- 0:10Speaker 1: I mean, this sucks for the game to not watch
- 0:12Speaker 1: Judge for a bit of time, But how do you
- 0:13Speaker 1: think it impacts the Yankees.
- 0:16Speaker 2: It definitely impacts the Yankees, and I know that their
- 0:20Speaker 2: offensive players outside of Judge have largely performed well this year,
- 0:24Speaker 2: with some notable exceptions. I know Ryan McMahon and Austin
- 0:27Speaker 2: Wells obviously the two biggest, but when you take him
- 0:31Speaker 2: out of the lineup, it affects the entire dynamic of
- 0:33Speaker 2: the lineup and it puts more pressure on the other players.
- 0:37Speaker 2: So to simply say, well, they'll be fine without them
- 0:40Speaker 2: because there are other guys are hitting maybe not. So yes,
- 0:44Speaker 2: it's a big blow. At the same time, let's not
- 0:47Speaker 2: forget the bigger picture. The American League is as weak
- 0:51Speaker 2: as it has been since I can remember, honestly twenty
- 0:54Speaker 2: five plus years, and the Yankees are not going to
- 0:58Speaker 2: fall out of contention, and there six weeks in fact,
- 1:01Speaker 2: they very well may remain in first place. I would
- 1:03Speaker 2: expect that they could or second place in a playoff spot.
- 1:06Speaker 2: So because their pitching is so good because they have
- 1:11Speaker 2: more depth than in the past, they should be okay,
- 1:14Speaker 2: But clearly when you lose Aaron Judge, it's a huge blow.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Do you see the Yankees making moves that are a
- 1:21Speaker 3: little bit more unorthodox in this situation where Judge is
- 1:24Speaker 3: out their MVP? Right now, Ben Rice could slide into
- 1:28Speaker 3: the catching role, giving giving some of the guys that
- 1:31Speaker 3: are on the bench that are hitting better than Escara
- 1:35Speaker 3: and Austin Wells. Could you see Ben Rice catching more
- 1:39Speaker 3: or are they gonna keep that as fine where it
- 1:41Speaker 3: is and move elsewhere.
- 1:44Speaker 2: I don't know the answer to that, Eric, but it's
- 1:45Speaker 2: a good question, and I'm going out there today to
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yankee Stadium and it's one that I imagine will come up,
- 1:50Speaker 2: because certainly that is a way to get more offense
- 1:54Speaker 2: in the lineup. Now, Ben Rice, I don't believe he's
- 1:56Speaker 2: caught all year, though he does attend the catching meetings
- 1:59Speaker 2: and he's is capable of handling that position. But then
- 2:03Speaker 2: you get Goldschmidt into an everyday role where he has
- 2:06Speaker 2: thrived in the part time role. So I'm not sure
- 2:09Speaker 2: that is the way to go. What they have wanted
- 2:11Speaker 2: to do is add a right handed hitting catcher, and
- 2:16Speaker 2: that way it would take some of the pressure off
- 2:18Speaker 2: Wells offensively. Because of Ken's left handers, it's more of
- 2:21Speaker 2: a struggle for him. So I would be surprised if
- 2:25Speaker 2: they did anything radical to start with. Maybe if things
- 2:29Speaker 2: don't go so well, they might reconsider that, But for me,
- 2:33Speaker 2: I would not change up what I was doing with them.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I would stick with Rice as largely the DH first
- 2:39Speaker 2: base at times, and I would stick with Goldschmid in
- 2:42Speaker 2: the part time role and live with the catchers until
- 2:45Speaker 2: potentially they can upgrade. And it will not be easy
- 2:47Speaker 2: to upgrade a catcher. It's not a position that is
- 2:50Speaker 2: widely available. Most teams are looking.
- 2:53Speaker 1: All right, kind of want to take you to your
- 2:55Speaker 1: article from this morning, which I thought was fascinating because
- 2:58Speaker 1: it has to do with this trade deay line and
- 3:00Speaker 1: how it could be impacted by the labor battle. But
- 3:05Speaker 1: you and many others that you spoke to made good
- 3:08Speaker 1: points about why it's a little ridiculous to think that way.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I'll let you lay out the rest in terms of
- 3:12Speaker 1: your conversations and how people have to do this under
- 3:15Speaker 1: wraps since executives can't talk about the CBA.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Right Well, that's basically the way it is every time
- 3:23Speaker 2: there is collective bargaining negotiations, executives are forbidden from talking
- 3:27Speaker 2: about labor related matters by the league. It's kind of standard.
- 3:31Speaker 2: So the article is about how with players who are
- 3:35Speaker 2: eligible for free agency after the twenty twenty seven season.
- 3:39Speaker 2: In particular, there is a question coming up with the deadline,
- 3:43Speaker 2: Well do you trade for such a player when there
- 3:46Speaker 2: is a chance that part or all of the twenty
- 3:49Speaker 2: twenty seven season might be canceled, And it's certainly something
- 3:53Speaker 2: that executives who are buyers have to entertain. At the
- 3:57Speaker 2: same time, while it is something that will give some
- 4:00Speaker 2: teams pause, you're paying extra or you're paying for the
- 4:03Speaker 2: extra year that might not happen, or at least might
- 4:06Speaker 2: not happen in full. There were some trades last off
- 4:09Speaker 2: season which really met the fame same kind of description.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Last off season, Brendan Donovan gets traded he is under
- 4:16Speaker 2: control through twenty twenty seven. Mackenzie Gore gets traded he
- 4:20Speaker 2: is under control through twenty twenty seven, and both those
- 4:22Speaker 2: players brought significant returns. The example I used in the
- 4:26Speaker 2: story was Joe Ryan. Now, Joe Ryan has this mutual
- 4:29Speaker 2: option for next year, but if it's declined by both
- 4:32Speaker 2: parties or either party, then he will simply be eligible
- 4:35Speaker 2: for arbitration. So he is a free agent after twenty
- 4:38Speaker 2: twenty seven. And my expectation, after talking to some people
- 4:42Speaker 2: in the game, is that it really won't affect things much.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Such is the need for starting pitching. The teams will
- 4:49Speaker 2: pay for Joe Ryan. They'll pay essentially full price. And
- 4:53Speaker 2: while you might see some haggling, and you might see
- 4:55Speaker 2: some buyers saying, hey, I'm not going there because it's
- 5:00Speaker 2: just too much of an uncertain situation, Ultimately, all it
- 5:04Speaker 2: takes is one to step up, and the expectation among
- 5:07Speaker 2: most executives is that that will happen for a guy
- 5:10Speaker 2: like Ryan, a clear difference maker.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Isn't that why the trade deadline takes forever to the
- 5:17Speaker 3: last minute is because somebody's gonna step up and make
- 5:20Speaker 3: the trade. But will we be able to see anything
- 5:23Speaker 3: when we get closer to that. I know they can't
- 5:25Speaker 3: talk about the CBA, but it's in a sense like,
- 5:28Speaker 3: why does player X not have any any market in
- 5:31Speaker 3: the trade at the trade deadline? Is it because there's
- 5:35Speaker 3: internal talks that we don't you even as an insider
- 5:39Speaker 3: don't get privy too that, hey, you know what, this
- 5:41Speaker 3: is the way it's going, and that's how the CBA
- 5:44Speaker 3: could go and affect trade talks.
- 5:47Speaker 2: There are a lot of talks that I'm not privy
- 5:49Speaker 2: to eric most talks actually, and again, I don't expect
- 5:53Speaker 2: that after talking with executives on this topic, and I
- 5:56Speaker 2: talk with a number of them, that it's going to
- 5:58Speaker 2: be a major factor. Four guys like Ryan Now, I
- 6:02Speaker 2: didn't write about Sandy al Contra in this context, but
- 6:05Speaker 2: he too, is an interesting player because he has I believe,
- 6:09Speaker 2: a twenty million dollar option for next season, So if
- 6:12Speaker 2: you trade for him, you have control, you can pick
- 6:15Speaker 2: up the option. But Sanda Contra is not pitching all
- 6:18Speaker 2: that well, so it's not that big an issue. And
- 6:22Speaker 2: maybe with a guy like that, and you're a team
- 6:25Speaker 2: looking at this, you're saying, well, wait a second, he's
- 6:28Speaker 2: essentially a rental because I'm not going to pick up
- 6:30Speaker 2: the option. Now, I did have one executive tell me
- 6:33Speaker 2: this is a guy on the buying side that he's
- 6:36Speaker 2: going to look at twenty twenty seven free agents as
- 6:39Speaker 2: rentals because he doesn't know what's going to happen with them.
- 6:42Speaker 2: That's fine, and I understand that, but ultimately he might
- 6:46Speaker 2: lose the player if that's the approach he takes and
- 6:48Speaker 2: makes offers in accordance with his view.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Ken and one team that always makes trades is the Padres.
- 6:58Speaker 4: With Merrill, Tatis, Manny Machado struggling a little bit, well,
- 7:04Speaker 4: they look at the deadline a little different. AJ Pelers
- 7:06Speaker 4: usually a whee learned dealer. Is he going to look
- 7:08Speaker 4: at a little different say wow, maybe we need to
- 7:10Speaker 4: make some different trades than we normally make.
- 7:12Speaker 2: AJ. Right now, it's wait and see, and they're in
- 7:15Speaker 2: a skid at the moment, and they do expect eventually
- 7:20Speaker 2: that Machado and Merrily going to hit. Tatis has sort
- 7:22Speaker 2: of started to hit a little bit lately. Their offense
- 7:25Speaker 2: is really surprisingly one of the worst in the league.
- 7:28Speaker 2: So if in two months, which is when the deadline is,
- 7:33Speaker 2: they are still in this offensive malaise, I don't see
- 7:37Speaker 2: how they can look at it and say we are
- 7:38Speaker 2: going all in here, they might not be in the
- 7:41Speaker 2: same kind of position. But on the bright side, for
- 7:44Speaker 2: the Padres, they've accomplished what they have essentially staying in
- 7:49Speaker 2: playoff position until right now without Joe Musgrove and you
- 7:53Speaker 2: Darvish and Nick Pavetta, and they've done it with their
- 7:56Speaker 2: three biggest hitters not performing to their career levels. So
- 8:00Speaker 2: if you have a situation where some of those guys
- 8:03Speaker 2: on the offensive side start performing better and they start
- 8:06Speaker 2: hitting more, and maybe they get one of the pitchers back.
- 8:08Speaker 2: They're not getting Darvish back, but must Grove and Paveta,
- 8:12Speaker 2: it's still possible, then you can look at it. Okay, well,
- 8:16Speaker 2: we can still go for it. Now. The X factor
- 8:18Speaker 2: here is whether the team's new ownership will give AJ Preller,
- 8:24Speaker 2: the GM, or the President Base Operations more leeway financially
- 8:29Speaker 2: to go make moves. Because remember, the Prodres have traded
- 8:32Speaker 2: a ton of prospects in recent years. That's what AJ
- 8:35Speaker 2: Preller does. But another way to make deals is simply
- 8:38Speaker 2: to take on money without giving up better prospects, which
- 8:41Speaker 2: is probably what would be preferable for the Prodres if
- 8:44Speaker 2: indeed they buy. Other teams believe that Preller is going
- 8:49Speaker 2: to get that leeway, that's kind of what they're hearing,
- 8:51Speaker 2: but it remains to be seen, and really it remains
- 8:54Speaker 2: to be seen AJ whether this team will merit reinforcement.
- 9:00Speaker 3: What about Cooper Pratt with the Brewers, a team that's
- 9:03Speaker 3: playing the game at a different level wins wise, but
- 9:06Speaker 3: also success wise, and how they're doing it. Is there
- 9:09Speaker 3: a chance that Cooper Pratt is a big league shortstop
- 9:12Speaker 3: for the Brewers as early as July this year.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I believe there is. And it's not just Cooper Pratt
- 9:19Speaker 2: they might call up. It's also Jet Williams, a third baseman,
- 9:22Speaker 2: or at least he would play third base for the Brewers.
- 9:25Speaker 2: They have an interesting scenario in front of him. They
- 9:28Speaker 2: have these players who are ready to go. There's an
- 9:30Speaker 2: outfielder as well named Lara who is tearing it up
- 9:34Speaker 2: at Triple A. They can do some things now. They've
- 9:37Speaker 2: been reluctant to do that when they've been playing so well.
- 9:40Speaker 2: But at some point, Cooper Pratt with a fifty million
- 9:44Speaker 2: dollar contract, he's going to be in the big leagues.
- 9:46Speaker 2: And I don't know if it'll be in June in July.
- 9:49Speaker 2: But you don't give a player that kind of money
- 9:51Speaker 2: and just stash him at Triple A the whole year,
- 9:53Speaker 2: especially when your shortstop joeyr Tiz is really not giving
- 9:58Speaker 2: you anything offensively. Defender Ortiz and will be a great
- 10:02Speaker 2: utility man if indeed he is replaced by Pratt, but
- 10:06Speaker 2: right now, offensively he's giving them very little. So Pratt
- 10:10Speaker 2: has done well at Triple A. Offensively, he's handling himself
- 10:13Speaker 2: pretty well. Jet Williams has done well. These guys could
- 10:17Speaker 2: eventually come up, and as I wrote, June fifteenth is
- 10:20Speaker 2: kind of a potentially key date here. June fifteenth is
- 10:25Speaker 2: the first time, the first day you can trade free
- 10:28Speaker 2: agency signed in the off season without their consent. So
- 10:33Speaker 2: perhaps at that point they trade Renifo and Gifo and
- 10:37Speaker 2: open up a spot at least for Jet Williams, and
- 10:39Speaker 2: then they make the move with Pratt as well.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Ken we talked about the Padres a little bit and
- 10:47Speaker 4: we had a conversation just today. Are they fool's goal
- 10:49Speaker 4: because they're they're kind of in it, but they're not.
- 10:51Speaker 4: I don't know. It's like you look at him and
- 10:53Speaker 4: you say, are they really good? Are they not really good?
- 10:55Speaker 2: Right?
- 10:55Speaker 4: The same can be said for the Rangers. The Rangers
- 10:58Speaker 4: are under five hundred, but they're close to ale wildcard spot.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Are they legit contenders for the postseason in a deep
- 11:04Speaker 4: postseason run? Or is this kind of a fools goal team? Too,
- 11:08Speaker 4: because they have de Gram Vivaldi and their bullpen's been
- 11:10Speaker 4: really good, but they still haven't hit.
- 11:13Speaker 2: The difference between the Rangers and the Padres if for
- 11:15Speaker 2: comparing those teams, AJ is it the Rangers playing in
- 11:18Speaker 2: the American League. Seeger is supposed to come back tomorrow
- 11:22Speaker 2: or actually tonight, I believe, and that should help them,
- 11:25Speaker 2: though he wasn't hitting before he got hurt. Eventually they'll
- 11:27Speaker 2: get Wyatt Langford back as well in relatively short order,
- 11:31Speaker 2: and at that point they will see their offense hole
- 11:36Speaker 2: for the first time in quite some time. And while
- 11:38Speaker 2: they haven't hit, even with those guys, at least they
- 11:41Speaker 2: would have the chance to see exactly who they are
- 11:44Speaker 2: on the offensive side. Now, the crazy thing about the Rangers,
- 11:48Speaker 2: and you can look at the wildcard standings right there,
- 11:50Speaker 2: or that's the Als, But let's look at the wildcard standings.
- 11:53Speaker 2: The Rangers are in a group of teams along with
- 11:56Speaker 2: the Orioles, the Blue Jays, the Twins, even the Red Sox,
- 12:00Speaker 2: group of teams that has been incredibly disappointing to their
- 12:04Speaker 2: fan bases. And you get each of those teams that
- 12:06Speaker 2: I just named, Even the Red Sox are within striking
- 12:09Speaker 2: distance of the third wild Card. The Red Sox, I believe,
- 12:12Speaker 2: are three and a half games out as bad as
- 12:15Speaker 2: they've been three and a half games out of the
- 12:17Speaker 2: wild Card. So what I'm saying here, and it gets
- 12:20Speaker 2: back to the Yankees conversation as well, is that the
- 12:24Speaker 2: American League is endlessly forgiving a land of opportunity, and
- 12:28Speaker 2: you can't rule yourselves out as the Texas Rangers or
- 12:32Speaker 2: the Orioles or any of those clubs until ultimately you
- 12:36Speaker 2: see over the next two months where you are.
- 12:39Speaker 3: One of the people we've been talking about for a
- 12:40Speaker 3: while this week is Karen Majinski about the restricted list,
- 12:44Speaker 3: moved to the bullpen, wants to be a starter, and
- 12:46Speaker 3: then he went out and got a four inning save,
- 12:48Speaker 3: so he's throwing well. But you talked about you wrote
- 12:52Speaker 3: about how the Pirates are looking for relief help. Is
- 12:54Speaker 3: there anything significant about them looking for relief help before
- 12:59Speaker 3: the tradeline than any other team that's looking for relief help.
- 13:03Speaker 2: My understanding is eric that they've been a little bit
- 13:05Speaker 2: more aggressive about it now it's June fifth. Generally speaking,
- 13:10Speaker 2: not many trades are made June fifth, though they did
- 13:12Speaker 2: just trade Justin Lawrence, who had struggled with them to
- 13:16Speaker 2: the Minnesota Twins. You don't get, for the most part,
- 13:19Speaker 2: impact relievers this early before the deadline because relievers are
- 13:23Speaker 2: always in demand, the prices are always high, and they
- 13:26Speaker 2: get even higher the closer we get to August third.
- 13:30Speaker 2: So while the Pirates are trying, as one of their
- 13:34Speaker 2: people pointed out to me, so are twenty other teams.
- 13:37Speaker 2: And while they may be more aggressive than most, they
- 13:40Speaker 2: need to find some internal solutions first. And Majinski looms
- 13:44Speaker 2: as a potentially big one. Four innings last night really good.
- 13:48Speaker 2: And for all those people saying, oh, this guy needs
- 13:51Speaker 2: to go, well, guess what. He's a pretty valuable piece. Now.
- 13:54Speaker 2: He might not be happy, he isn't happy, but he
- 13:57Speaker 2: did his job last night, and I expect that he
- 14:00Speaker 2: will continue doing his job because he's been throwing the
- 14:02Speaker 2: ball well all year.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Kind of a couple more from your notes column. I
- 14:07Speaker 1: want to ask about Michael CONFORDO and what you learned
- 14:10Speaker 1: about his resurgence this year. Many Dodger fans were disappointed
- 14:14Speaker 1: they spent good money. The Dodgers did one year seventeen
- 14:17Speaker 1: million I think it was, and then this year signs
- 14:19Speaker 1: for I think two million bucks with the Cubs, and
- 14:22Speaker 1: they're getting a lot more value out of him.
- 14:23Speaker 2: So what happened. Conforida was disappointed too, and he told
- 14:28Speaker 2: me that when he went to the Dodgers, his thought was,
- 14:31Speaker 2: I'm going to slug with their superstars. I'll be right
- 14:34Speaker 2: there with Freddy and Otani, and that's going to be
- 14:36Speaker 2: the player I am. And of course he wasn't that player.
- 14:40Speaker 2: And when he wasn't that player, the way he put
- 14:42Speaker 2: it was I had no place to go. He kind
- 14:45Speaker 2: of lost his way, and Dave Roberts, Dodgers manager, called
- 14:49Speaker 2: him in to his office late July, and said, listen, man,
- 14:53Speaker 2: you've got to give me a reason the player. You've
- 14:56Speaker 2: got to give me a reason to keep you around
- 14:59Speaker 2: now Canforda So stayed the rest of the year with
- 15:02Speaker 2: the Dodgers, but he didn't make any other playoff rosters.
- 15:05Speaker 2: And it was only in October when he was kind
- 15:07Speaker 2: of on the taxi squad taking live batting practice that
- 15:10Speaker 2: Roberts saw the player. He wanted Conforto to be free
- 15:14Speaker 2: and easy, more athletic in the box, just kind of
- 15:18Speaker 2: doing his thing like he used to do at Oregon
- 15:20Speaker 2: State in the miners and with the Mets, and obviously
- 15:24Speaker 2: it didn't work out with the Dodgers, but then he
- 15:26Speaker 2: signed with the Cubs Scott, as you mentioned, and he
- 15:29Speaker 2: took into the offseason motivation to become what Roberts was
- 15:34Speaker 2: talking about, that kind of player again, and he's done
- 15:37Speaker 2: it for the Cubs. He has really had a resurgent
- 15:40Speaker 2: kind of season, and he credits Roberts a great deal
- 15:44Speaker 2: with that talk and kind of giving him a reality check.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Dan, I want to respect you unlike AJ does. Would
- 15:53Speaker 3: you rather be called short or little?
- 15:57Speaker 2: Well? I've called both often, along with many other terms
- 16:00Speaker 2: that cannot be printed, but I don't really care. Call
- 16:04Speaker 2: me whatever you want.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Okay, Because you wrote that they that they Diamondbacks draft
- 16:11Speaker 3: little left handed and I know it's a quote by
- 16:14Speaker 3: Merrill Kelly, but they draft little left handed hitting outfielders.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Talk a little bit about what you wrote about how
- 16:19Speaker 3: the short kings in Arizona are getting a job done well.
- 16:23Speaker 2: First of all, short is a relative term when we're
- 16:26Speaker 2: talking about short baseball players. We're not talking about short
- 16:29Speaker 2: baseball writers. Short baseball players five nine five ten or
- 16:33Speaker 2: like five six inches tall. Other baseball writers like I
- 16:36Speaker 2: don't know me, So it's all relative, but at the
- 16:39Speaker 2: same time, the Diamondbacks over the years have looked at
- 16:44Speaker 2: shorter outfielders shorter players in general, not in a negative way.
- 16:49Speaker 2: They've been willing to take them. And part of the
- 16:52Speaker 2: reason for that dates back to the front office's history
- 16:55Speaker 2: with the Boston Red Sox. That's where Mike Hazen came from.
- 16:57Speaker 2: He's the president of Baseball Operations, where Amil Sode came from.
- 17:01Speaker 2: He is their assistant general manager who was in scouting
- 17:05Speaker 2: with the Red Sox when they drafted Dustin Pedroia and
- 17:08Speaker 2: the scouting director when they drafted Mooky Betts, both guys
- 17:12Speaker 2: on the shorter side. So while some teams shy away
- 17:16Speaker 2: from some of these guys, the Diamondbacks see it as
- 17:19Speaker 2: if that player can hit and shows a little bit
- 17:21Speaker 2: of power, we're going to take a chance on him.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Corbyn Carroll the best example of that, of course, but
- 17:27Speaker 2: they had Alec Thomas for a while, They've got Jorge A.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Barosa now, they just brought up Tommy Troy. These guys
- 17:33Speaker 2: are all shorter, and some of their top prospects as
- 17:35Speaker 2: well fit the same kind of profile. So I just
- 17:39Speaker 2: found it interesting, and let's face it, I have a
- 17:43Speaker 2: little bit of I don't know, partiality bias if you
- 17:46Speaker 2: want to call it towards shorter guys. And I like
- 17:49Speaker 2: writing about him.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Kah. We all have our thing.
- 17:54Speaker 4: We all have our thing. We like Ken and we
- 17:55Speaker 4: don't like.
- 17:56Speaker 3: That's all I'm gonna say.
- 17:57Speaker 4: Uh, smaller guy, I would say than than a lot
- 18:02Speaker 4: of guys. And he's only he has one homer when
- 18:04Speaker 4: he has two homers now. But he was talking about
- 18:07Speaker 4: how he only had one home run. Does everybody need
- 18:09Speaker 4: to be a thirty home run guy? I know that's
- 18:11Speaker 4: how you get paid, but isn't there value in being
- 18:13Speaker 4: a good player, getting on base, stealing bases, playing unbelievable defenses,
- 18:17Speaker 4: shortstop instead of everybody being a thirty home run guy.
- 18:21Speaker 2: There is value in that aj And when Mason Winn
- 18:23Speaker 2: said to me when we were in Saint Louis, I
- 18:25Speaker 2: believe it was last week. Hey, I am embarrassed to
- 18:28Speaker 2: only have one home run. I kind of internally raised
- 18:33Speaker 2: my eyebrows. If that's possible, I thought, WHOA, what's he
- 18:36Speaker 2: talking about? This is Mason Winn. He's an unbelievable defender.
- 18:40Speaker 2: He can be a good offensive player too, without hitting
- 18:43Speaker 2: home runs. And yet the Cardinals feel he can be
- 18:46Speaker 2: both those guys, a guy who is a good offensive
- 18:49Speaker 2: player and a guy with some power. His rookie year,
- 18:51Speaker 2: he hits some home runs, so I understand his desire
- 18:55Speaker 2: to hit for more power, because hey, that is the
- 18:58Speaker 2: reward system in play right now. That is how players
- 19:01Speaker 2: get paid. But I would expect Mason win even if
- 19:06Speaker 2: he doesn't develop into a thirty home run guy is
- 19:08Speaker 2: going to be paid big because he is one of
- 19:10Speaker 2: the top defensive shortstops in the game, and also from
- 19:14Speaker 2: an offensive standpoint, he can be a guy and not
- 19:17Speaker 2: just a punch of judy here. He can be more
- 19:19Speaker 2: than that. But he doesn't have to be necessarily a
- 19:22Speaker 2: thirty homer guy.
- 19:26Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean he is. He's a fun player
- 19:28Speaker 1: to watch, an entertaining player on a team that's contending too.
- 19:31Speaker 1: So you hope he finds a little more pop and
- 19:33Speaker 1: maybe the Cardinals continue this fun run with the tarps
- 19:36Speaker 1: off crowdhaul last summer long Ken enjoy the weekend. Yeah,
- 19:40Speaker 1: we'll look forward to talking to you more next week
- 19:42Speaker 1: about the deal with Judge when you talk to the Yanks,
- 19:44Speaker 1: So we'll talk to you soon. Thanks guys, Thank you
- 19:48Speaker 1: AFT senior insider Ken Rosenthal delivering the news for US
- 19:51Speaker 1: as we go over Judge and trade deadline talk, which
- 19:54Speaker 1: will be a ton of the conversation the next couple months.
- 19:57Speaker 1: So that includes grilling Ken questions, which you can do
- 20:00Speaker 1: during Fair Territory Live Monday ten am Thursday twelve thirty
- 20:04Speaker 1: pm Eastern every week
