- 1:40one is the Garbage Shoe Murder Ladies and gentlemen, the story you're about to
- 1:53hear is true, only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.
- 2:00You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned to homicide Detail. A young woman has
- 2:06been murdered. The body was discovered behind locked doors. The assassin is still
- 2:12at large. Your job find him. Drag Nets the documented drama of an
- 2:23actual crime. For the next thirty minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles
- 2:27Police Department, you will travel step by step on the side of the law
- 2:30through an actual case, from official police files, from beginning to end,
- 2:36from crime to punishment. Dragnet is the story of your police force in action.
- 2:44It was Tuesday, January ninth, was stormy in Los Angeles. We
- 2:47were working a day watch out of homicide detail. My partner's Ben Romerol.
- 2:52My name's Friday. I was on the way to work and it was six
- 2:54forty five am when I got to the steps of the city hall, the
- 2:58main street enters. Hey, Joe, wait up, mollying Ben? What
- 3:05did they call you? Five am? Donaho called you, Yeah, miserable
- 3:08out and it's pretty well there's feet or something West see the transfer there?
- 3:15Yeah, new chief of detective Wait a minute. I want to get some
- 3:19gum tack experiment. Well, I heard about the new chief, Fat Brown
- 3:30put me in tih them. M dang h. I wish i'd make up
- 3:36the minds. Bought our shift work days to call you back night work nights.
- 3:38Call you back days once you put into a desk job, and we'll
- 3:42never have to call you back. You're here all the time. You just
- 3:44hired the police know we are. Thanks. That's a great way to start
- 4:03off. As your new chief called you back on a rocking morning like this.
- 4:06I'm glad you got the job then, yeah, congratulations. Gee it's
- 4:10hard to follow man like ed backstrand going to need your help. You got
- 4:14it. Here's why I called you back, Laura Barclay. It was a
- 4:16dead body report. Nightclub entertainer landlady found the body an hour ago. Who's
- 4:20covering bertand Anderson? There out there now strangled the lamp cord, still trying
- 4:26to figure out how the guy got in the house, doors and windows all
- 4:29locked. Attack at the motive for no Yeah, I just came from there.
- 4:33I think there's more and you raised me her room wasn't proud. Yeah,
- 4:39just a hunch, play it for me. Then and I left that
- 4:45Brown's office, picked up Lieutenant Lee Jones at the crime hra Abnon drove to
- 4:48the West Adams District. Number sixteen Imperial Place, where the body of Laura
- 4:51Barklay had been found, was an ornate frame structure done in Victorian style,
- 4:57at least thirty to forty years old. Number sixteen was on the ground floor.
- 5:00We went in a narrow hallway led to the bedroom. In the rear
- 5:03of the house. Two gas jet mixtures which had been converted to electricity,
- 5:08were the only illumination. This place has seen better day. Anybody else coming
- 5:13out? Leave? I see flash bulbs down there. They must be here
- 5:15already, all right, righty, honest way hye Burton Hi the darks covering
- 5:23the body position Peterson's dusty for Prince Fred. Shoot a couple of overheads.
- 5:27Don't make them all angle shots, get up high, then move in close
- 5:30and Chief was right. Rooms in pretty good order. She talked to anybody.
- 5:33Burdon Land lady lives upstairs. Only two people living in the building.
- 5:38Does she tell you anything? Said the Barclay girl paid a rent on time.
- 5:41Good tenant plays the organ at the Blue Fox cocktail line. It any
- 5:45idea how the murderer got in here? Not yet, Every door and window
- 5:48and the place is locked. Anything else? That's it so far. We'll
- 5:51give you fifteen point seven and what we've got. Okay, Lloyd, you
- 5:55and Anderson have another detail? Yeah, working on that westward thing. Two
- 5:59uniforms. Man outside if you want anything, right, Thanks, It's like
- 6:01a tough one. Joe, whoever did it much to come in through the
- 6:03keyhole? I see you later. One and he is in the dusting the
- 6:10prince nothing yet. The only piece of physical evidence so far the lamp caught
- 6:15she was strangled with. I'll run it through downtop matter a sign of the
- 6:18drug. Maybe she wanted to die. Check the bathroom when he been.
- 6:23I look around the kitchen, Pete, have you a dusted the lamp yet?
- 6:36Ben? Come here a minute, will you? Ben? Yeah,
- 6:40come in the kitchen, will you You got a pencil? Uh? Yeah?
- 6:48Yeah? Here you are? Okay, look at this garbage. Shoot
- 6:51here, let me see about eight feet to the ground, big enough for
- 6:58a man to get through. Oh yeah, yeah, no problem. Lee
- 7:04could be the answer, Joe, and he either got in this way or
- 7:08he was in the house when she came home. What do you got garbage?
- 7:12Shoot here? What do you think could be? Let me grab a
- 7:15kid. Let's see lotting them? Powder? No, no, nothing on
- 7:43the outside of the lid look pretty clean. Must have just been scrubbed.
- 7:46Abrasions here, had a pencil, yeah, yeah, okay, hold it
- 7:51up. Yeah yeah, yeah, there we go. Large prints, unusually
- 8:03large, big hands. Can I look inside the shoot a minutely, go
- 8:05ahead, watch that the lid yeah, well, uh, looks like it's
- 8:11blocked off upstairs. This thing hasn't been used for garbage for some time.
- 8:16Most of them will condemned a few years back. I'll get Fred to shoot
- 8:20these. Let's go in the living room at deskmindstedly, Yeah, it's clean.
- 8:28Go ahead, take a look, you know. Yeah. Photographs hmmm,
- 8:43hundreds all man, yeah, all different? Lee Jones and the crime
- 8:52lab drew and each stuff and went back to Central Division. Two uniformed officers
- 8:56remained on duty at the scene of the crimes. Bad Brown had men sent
- 9:00out to canvass the neighborhood. Ben and I went upstairs and talked with a
- 9:03landlady and missus Emma Smith. Yes, police officers you miss Smith, Yes,
- 9:09you're not the same officers I talked with before. No, ma'am,
- 9:13I wonder if we could ask you a few questions. I've told the other
- 9:16officers everything I knew. We have to double check Missmith. Who was the
- 9:22girl who lived in the apartment below number sixteen, Laura Barclay? Is that
- 9:26the name she used the mail she received? Was it address that way?
- 9:28Yes? It was. She was a very good tenant, Laura. No
- 9:33trouble with her at all. When did she move here? Oh? About
- 9:39four or five years ago. I have the rent receipts. I always save
- 9:45receipts. Did she always live by yourself? Oh? Yes, that apartment
- 9:48rents to one personally? Did she have many visitors? Friends dropping in?
- 9:54N that I ever saw? Pretty much to herself. Laura. Then came
- 10:00yesterday and took it away. What's that meant? The organ? Electric one?
- 10:05Laura rendered it from a big downtown term used to practice all the time.
- 10:11Mine was beautiful, Yeah, in the globing. She used to play
- 10:18that for me, Missus Smith. When did the men come and take the
- 10:22organ away? Yesterday in the afternoon about four thirty. Was Miss barklay at
- 10:26home when they came, No, she wasn't. She left me a note
- 10:31to let the men, so I left the men. I never allow anyone
- 10:35in the apartment without a note. You know the name of the company where
- 10:39she went into the organ, the braziers. It was called down on South
- 10:43Spring. Didn't you think it was unusual that miss Barkley didn't have any friends?
- 10:48Now, oh, sir, I didn't say Laura didn't have any friends.
- 10:54What I said was that she didn't have any friends who came to see
- 10:58her here. She moved here from a hotel for women. That's the refruit
- 11:03she gave me. I see, I wonder if you could give us the
- 11:07address of that hotel. Please write it down for you. Thank you,
- 11:11missus Smith. Did you hear any unusual sounds in miss Barclay's flat last night?
- 11:15Anything out of the ordinary? If I had, I would have called
- 11:18the police. And we have saved a girl's life. Thank you very much,
- 11:22Miss Smith. Here's her card. There's anything you think of after gone?
- 11:26Don't hesitate the car? Thank you? I will. I hope you
- 11:30get the dirty men who killed Laura. We didn't say it was a man,
- 11:33Miss Smith. Well, isn't it all? We'res the man? Before
- 11:39we left, missus Hemmer Smith. We asked her about the garbage shoe.
- 11:43She said it had not been in use for the last four years. We
- 11:46showed her the stack of photos. She could identify none of them. We
- 11:48drove back to Central Division. We checked Brazier's music store. The two men
- 11:52who moved the organ were checked out and cleared. We went to the wind
- 11:56Hotel for young ladies. They could tell us nothing. Laura Barclay's references were
- 12:00all good, and we went back to the office and met the chief detectives.
- 12:03That brown you think he got in through the garbage shop. That's where
- 12:05it looks. Gee went all over the apartment. If there's another way,
- 12:07we haven't found it. All right, you know he got in. Who
- 12:11is it? We got out on APB and his mo lating fingerprints and making
- 12:15a run on those pens we found. Got an idea about these pictures here,
- 12:18most of them theatrical still show people. Frank Lettour in his canine circus.
- 12:28So Laura, all my love, Frank, tell me what to do.
- 12:31Here's a guy at check with this morning, Bernard Carubbean theatrical booking.
- 12:35Huh yeah. Barney's office is down in the Aufian building. Athan Hill he
- 12:39booked her into the Blue Fox. See what he can tell you? Right?
- 12:43I grabbed the pictures been huh oh, yeah, well you got more
- 12:48than you started with those fingerprints. You get a make on him. We'll
- 12:50be close to the gang. So was the Barclay girl, but he got
- 12:54away. I wonder if we could see mister Krubin. Who's calling? Please
- 13:03Sergeant Rome and Sergeants Friday police officers one moment, please, two police officers
- 13:11to see mister Krubyan, Sergeant Friday and Sergeant Ramero. Is that right?
- 13:18Thank you? When then Rosy loss through the snow, I'll be coming home
- 13:33on the world again. When then General Sherman same so, covered with ice,
- 13:39I'll be home more good and no thank you? I help you understand
- 13:50that you booked Laura Barklay. Yeah, that's right. I spoke with as
- 13:54got his name right here. Chief's bad Brown, that's right. He asked
- 13:58me about Laura too bad about that? Any clues we're working on it,
- 14:01mister Kruby. What makes a person pull of stuff like that? Now?
- 14:05Didn't have no enemies? She had one? Well, I don't know much
- 14:09about her except I've been booking her for about four years. Good organists,
- 14:13three Fair Voice too, got some pictures. Yeah, why don't you take
- 14:16her look can Yeah? Sure, quite a stack? Yeah. Oh,
- 14:20Frankie Latouring them dogs, great act. I book him, Ricky Rogan,
- 14:24King of the Tap, Gus saw an Ocle and that sing seala is.
- 14:28Yeah. Yeah, I know all these people. I book them all.
- 14:31Did Nora Barkley work with all these people one time or another? Yeah?
- 14:35During the war us O camp shows. You know. Do you know whether
- 14:39she was close to any of them? Well, come to think of it,
- 14:41she was that Frankie Latour crazy about them dogs he is, no,
- 14:46I mean the men themselves. Anybody that she seemed particularly interested in. Never
- 14:48heard her mention anybody, pretty girl? Did you know her very well,
- 14:52miss Cruby, only when she came in and out of town on an engagement.
- 14:56I'm a married man. Well, when you don't think there's anything to
- 14:58these pictures year of hers, I wouldn't say so. When you're on the
- 15:01road, you always collect photos of the people you work with souvenirs. Well,
- 15:07thank you very much, mister Krubian, here's our con you bet you
- 15:11sure hope you catch the guys. What do why you picked on the law
- 15:13sometimes they don't have a reason. When we left for noin Carubbean's office,
- 15:20were checked by the blue Box cocktail. Arms was still early. The sign
- 15:24said opened five pm. It was three fifteen. We went to the morgue
- 15:30in the basement of the Hall of Justice and looked at the corners report.
- 15:31The autopsy report stated that the cause of death for Laura Barclay was strangulation.
- 15:37We went to the second floor of the old City Jail building, the crime
- 15:39lab. Nothing in the lamp corn standard uel one hundred and ten line,
- 15:45but anywhere no prints? How about the shoot? Lee went back then rechecked.
- 15:48You were right, the guy got in through the garbage shoot. I'm
- 15:52more of the same prints, along with some clothed impressions in the dust ten
- 15:54anything. The guy was wearing some kind of tweed donegal fifteen to the inch.
- 16:00How about the size of a manly how big could he be to clear
- 16:03that shoot? He had a twenty inch diameter. Almost any man could squeeze
- 16:06through that. Check the ground level of the shoot cement. No footprints.
- 16:11You don't have too much for it. I got one thing for you.
- 16:12What's that? I think I found your motive and not the one listed on
- 16:17the report. Yeah, here are the blow ups of the body. It's
- 16:22thirty six by fifty four. Here, pull that in with you then,
- 16:26no, look through this magnifying glass here the right hand. Yeah, see
- 16:33where I'm pointing ring finger? Yeah, looked like ring marks. That's right,
- 16:37pretty wide. Must have been good side things. I might still be
- 16:41in that room. I called Dad Brown. He had the room rechecked.
- 16:44No sign, and you think we got a burglerary boy here? That's my
- 16:48guess. Dad had the voice check with the landlady. She didn't know anything
- 16:51about any rings. The Barclay girl out of hand. That doesn't help.
- 16:55Think I got something else here? Library book her Their cards in one of
- 17:00the pockets inside, checked out from the LA Public Library main brand. I
- 17:04think these might be your lead on the missing rings. Librarian sees a person's
- 17:10hands every time they check out a board. It makes sense. Ly,
- 17:12we'll play it that way. What do the problem with the books checked out
- 17:15a music room? Yeah, that's it. I think you've got your motive
- 17:19now on a good set of prints. Your clothes. Thanks a lot of
- 17:22LA. Let's go to the library, Ben, I'll get it crime.
- 17:27No, this is Friday. Oh thanks Frank, Well, we got some
- 17:36motive. How do you mean, no, making those fingerprints nothing? You
- 17:49are listening to Dragnet for the solution to an actual case from official police files
- 17:57four thirty. It wasday January ninth, heavy rain. Laura Barklay's murderer was
- 18:03still a free man. Ben and I were sure that whoever left their fingerprints
- 18:07on the inside of that garbage chue was the same man who murdered the Barkley
- 18:11girl. He had no previous record, his first crime, as far as
- 18:15we knew, was a killing, and the odds were all in his favor.
- 18:18The fingerprints gave us nothing. All we had left to lead us to
- 18:22the killer were three library books and a stack of ole theatrical photos. The
- 18:26solution of most crimes, for the working detectives is method and persistence. When
- 18:30you have clues, you work with him. When you don't, you work
- 18:33your way to a logical conclusion as best you can. We went to the
- 18:37Los Angeles Public Library, the main branch. The librarians in the music room
- 18:42handled thousands of readers every week. None of them remembered Laura Barklay. We
- 18:47drove over to the Blue Fox cocktail Lounge. We interviewed the manager, and
- 18:51he knew nothing of her personal life. We talked to Harry Schumann, the
- 18:53organist who had taken Laura Barklay's place. What would you like to hear police?
- 19:00She'd like to talk to you man about Laura. H Yeah, try
- 19:06all right? If I keep on playing. Manager wants full fifteen minute sets,
- 19:10go ahead, that's all right. What can I tell you? How
- 19:14long have you known miss Barklay? Oh? Four or five years? Terrible
- 19:19thing. You got to get to whoever did it? Yeah, we're gonna
- 19:22try. Can you think of anybody that might have killed her? You know,
- 19:26you asked a question of everybody. I don't know. Does anybody ever
- 19:30know for sure? Sometimes? Well, I don't know. When you think
- 19:36of a person, you never think who might murder her. Maybe you might
- 19:38know a few things about it that you could fill us in on. I'll
- 19:41try. She went for jewelry much, rings, things like that. Funny.
- 19:45You should ask that she was nuts for him, some good things.
- 19:49Rings, had a couple of beauties, diamonds, say we're big stones cost
- 19:55four thousand. I know she used to put most of her money into those
- 19:59rings. Did you buy him on time? Yeah? I remember one night.
- 20:03She was over joyed. The night she paid him off cost a lot
- 20:07of doubt. Can you describe those rings for us? Not too good.
- 20:11I can give you the name of the jewelers she bought him from. That'll
- 20:15do. Do you know anybody else that we might talk to? Don't know
- 20:18any of her friends. She was an only child, no living relatives that
- 20:22I know. How about her landlady? Yeah, I guess that's it.
- 20:25Harry, thank you for what I wish I could help more. Everybody had
- 20:29your attitude, we'd be out of a job. Before we left the Blue
- 20:34Fox, Harry Schumann gave us the address of Laura Barclay's jeweler. The next
- 20:38morning, we checked with the manager of the store and he gave us a
- 20:41complete description of the two diamond rings which the dead girl had purchased. They
- 20:45were valued at four thousand dollars. He gave us detailed goings of the rings.
- 20:48We went back to the office, gave the information, the burglary detail
- 20:52and all points. Bulletin was put out describing them. Pawn shops throughout the
- 20:56city and state were alerted to watch for the stolen rings. We had lunch
- 20:59with Chief Fad Brown, a costas caffette. Never mind, no, Mara,
- 21:03I'll get it. Oh, thank you, Jee, I'll get the
- 21:06tip. Stu was good. There have some change with a cigarette shoe.
- 21:17Thanks any cigarettes? Joe? No, no, thanks, Dan, let's
- 21:30go. What do you think, Fad? The description of the rings and
- 21:34the moo should help. Haven't turned up. Good chance he's holding on to
- 21:37him. Could be his first job. Probably scared anybody checked back over the
- 21:41neighborhood. Then this is the afternoon and this morning about a daughter or salesman
- 21:45through that district called been checked out. It's a dead end nowhere. Only
- 21:49those friends are checked out. Well they didn't. Got a kickback from Barrett
- 21:55and Sacramento his m o. No mate, We'll have to get him with
- 21:57what we've got. Here's the car. Sure you picked up all of those
- 22:03ends. We've been back over the course three times. Go over it again,
- 22:07keep going over it until something breaks. For the next ten days,
- 22:15we retraced our steps from the room where the crime was committed, throughout the
- 22:18neighborhood to the place where she worked, back to the same dead end.
- 22:22Then and I checked and double checked each other to make certain that neither of
- 22:25us would overlook even the smallest detail of the investigation. We've got no place
- 22:30was eight am January nineteenth, homicide Friday burglary. Joe, Yeah, Dick,
- 22:37that's some job. But last night couple of watches strand upperled. How
- 22:41are we figuring it is? M Yeah, guy got into the gargatuote.
- 22:49Besides fingerprints and photographs, one other marked by which the unknown criminal is identified
- 22:55is by his method of operation as m O. Once a thief finds a
- 22:57successful means of our operation, he seldom changes it. In our search for
- 23:03Laura Barkley's murderer, we had checked our files and found no criminals at large
- 23:07whose practice it was to gain entrance through a garbage shoe. It was reasonably
- 23:11safe to assume that this was the same man. It was two pm January
- 23:15twenty third. I was on my way back from the record girl. He
- 23:18just had a call, Joe Alma Radcliff conform it, Yeah, says two
- 23:22days ago he heard about some guy who was making the rounds trying to peddle
- 23:26a couple of diamond rings, same ones, and he's not sure, doesn't
- 23:29know what the guy looked like. Any idea where the guy is now hasn't
- 23:32been around. Sayce told I'm going to keep his eyes open. That's good.
- 23:36Come in here of you two. What he got? The poor just
- 23:41came down from Burgery plaun shop down on North Maine. Took in a watch
- 23:45and strand of pearls last night. Yeah, same stuff that Rubles called you
- 23:48about. Yeah, I remember, where's it dying? Same guy tried to
- 23:51peddle a couple of diamond rings. Ten am, January twenty fifth, Bad
- 23:57Brown arranged to have all pawn shop detail calls concerning the suspect what through to
- 24:03us on Extension two five to one homicide five days past, no further word
- 24:10homicide Friday. This is George Rose really Hubert pawnshop second in May. Yeah,
- 24:15what's the matter? Man in here trying to turn those diamond rings?
- 24:18Ones in the stolen property list again? Talk now, stall the movie right
- 24:22down? Come on, Ben move it. Yeah, the next corner there
- 24:37it is, just step the block, pull up, all right, let's
- 24:41go. Hell here we are, Hey, Collo, look out, Joey's
- 24:48got a gun. All right, Joe Yeah, I'll go back a way.
- 24:52Let's get him there. You go, step badly, can you hit
- 24:57him? He didn't stop him watching come on, Joe, he's turning on
- 25:06the spring. He ran into that cafeteria up the street. Want it's run
- 25:11where he goes, Dave? Yeah, there he goes, headed for the
- 25:14Kitchen's bunt. Stop that man. Stop here up the back door into the
- 25:19alley. There he goes stock man. All right, Joe, stop,
- 25:25he's not stopping. Stay clear. He's done a right. Come on,
- 25:38all right, get his guns. Yeah, he got him in the leg.
- 25:42Joe hit his head when he fail. All right, snap one huh.
- 25:48Look on the little finger of his right hand. Two diamond rings.
- 25:53Yeah, it doesn't make sense, does it. What's there? Four thousand
- 25:57dollars worth of diamonds and he was laying on a pilot garbage. The story
- 26:08you I've just heard was true, only the names were changed to protect the
- 26:15innocent. On April second, nineteen forty seven, trial was held in Superior
- 26:18Court, Department eighty one, City and County of Los Angeles, State of
- 26:22California. In a moment the results of that trial, Lola Barclay's murderer was
- 26:36identified as Martin Eric Swanson. He was tried and convicted of murder in the
- 26:40first degree. His case was fought through the Supreme Court of California and in
- 26:44the United States Supreme Court. In both instances, his conviction was upheld.
- 26:49Last Friday morning, after a delay of five years, Martin Eric Swanson was
- 26:53executed in the lethal gas chamber the State Penitentiary. You have just heard Dragnet,
- 27:03a new series of authentic cases from official fires. Technical advice for Dragnet
- 27:07comes from the office of Acting Chief of Police W. A. Wharton,
- 27:11Los Angeles Police Department. Dragnet honors the city of Youngstown, State of Ohio,
- 27:18and the men who make up the Youngstown Police Department, another of America's
- 27:22great law enforcement agencies. One of these men, Chief of Police, Edward
- 27:27J. Allen, honored as Policeman of the Year who dedicates his life so
- 27:33that yours might be more secure. Fatima Cigarettes, best of all Long Cigarettes,
- 27:41has brought you Dragnet from Los Angeles. Welcome back. One thing I
- 27:56have noticed is that in the twenty a lot of episodes of Dragnet we've played,
- 28:02we've already had quite a few. I think this is at least the
- 28:06second or third case where we're dealing with murder of a woman who didn't seem
- 28:11to know anyone who didn't have any close personal relationship, and I think that
- 28:18the reason these sort of cases are being highlighted at this point is you get
- 28:23more lag work in and the mystery is deeper, just because before the police
- 28:30can even set about the task of finding out who murdered the woman, they
- 28:36have to get an idea and a handle on on who she was and how
- 28:41she lived. The murders where you can easily figure out who knew the victim
- 28:48are a lot easier to solve, though they would find some interesting ones of
- 28:52the other variety as well. Well. I only turned to listener comments and
- 28:56feedback and have this from Will, who sends along Happy New Year to you
- 29:04and your family. Adam, I really do appreciate all the work you put
- 29:08into the show. It's top It is top notch entertainment. The summer will
- 29:12be two years that I've been listening daily. I've yet to convert my wife
- 29:17and son to old time radio, but I think they may come around at
- 29:19some point. Stranger things they have appened. Keep up the excellent work and
- 29:23can't wait for what new shows will be coming up when the current runs are
- 29:29app Take care well well, thanks so much, well it can definitely be
- 29:36a challenge to get people introduced to radio drama. Of course, old time
- 29:44radio is a very broad category, and if I would ever offer any suggestion
- 29:49about getting people interested is to think of the type of programs that they like
- 29:55on television and look for high quality radio versions if they like. For examples,
- 30:00some classic movies, say there's a lux radio theater adaptation, or screen
- 30:06Guild playoffs or screen directors playouts. A lot of those movies were adapted for
- 30:12the radio, often with original actors in them, or if they're into literature,
- 30:18Studio One from CBS did some fantastic book adaptations. But old time radio
- 30:23is an acquired taste, and again, I think the best way to get
- 30:29people and arrested is to search around find some programs that they might enjoy based
- 30:33on just their natural taste. And that's generally been the case with Andrew.
- 30:37She's not really into my wife, she's not really into listening to anything.
- 30:41But there have been a few series I've found that she's enjoyed listening to with
- 30:48me, and one of them was somewhat obscure. It was like an early
- 30:52fifties radio sitcom called Young Love about two college students who Secretly got married.
- 31:00It was a silly story. There were only seven episodes of it, but
- 31:03we enjoyed it immensely. And of course, Andrea does listen to the Old
- 31:07Time Radio Superman Show every single episode, with the exception of AID we've listened
- 31:12to together. So there you go. All right, Well, now I'm
- 31:15going to talk a little bit about the new ebook, All I Needed to
- 31:19Know I Learned from Dragnet. Now, as long time listeners will know,
- 31:25I've written previously. Back in twenty eleven, I published All I Needed to
- 31:29Know I Learned from Colombo, and that's actually been a pretty successful title over
- 31:36the years in terms of raw sales. It's probably the most successful ebook I've
- 31:42done. And I was kind of testing the water with that one to see
- 31:47how well it would work. And the listener and reader responds to that book
- 31:52really drove me to go ahead and write the next one. I definitely wanted
- 31:56Dragnet to be at the center of the book, and it is there.
- 32:02It is the fourth chapter, and it's also the biggest section of the book
- 32:08and was probably the chapter that I had the most fun writing because I studied
- 32:15up so much on the program and really listened to every episode available. My
- 32:22wife, she had to ring me in a little bit on it, she
- 32:23said in a couple of spots to say, you're just showing off. But
- 32:28it does follow the same format as all I needed to know I learned from
- 32:32Colombo in that there's an introductory portion giving a freak overview of the detective from
- 32:42the chapter, a history of their career of adaptations made for dealing with a
- 32:49book character, and we're actually only doing one of those in this book.
- 32:52And the drag n history is pretty detailed and includes a lot of Jack Webb's
- 33:00story, just because I don't think you can effectively, you know, separate
- 33:06the two. And along the way we address that old miss of Joe Friday
- 33:13always said, just the facts, man, And then we take a look
- 33:15at life lessons that can be garnered from Dragnet, And in doing that,
- 33:20I really treat the whole series, the original radio and television series and the
- 33:28sixties revival series is just one unit. And so some stories are based or
- 33:32some lessons are based on the nineteen fifties a program primarily, and some are
- 33:39based on the sixties show. And that also comes into play because I also
- 33:44have three of the five books or three of the book five appendices actually addressed
- 33:52Dragnet, and I include my list of the twenty five greatest Dragnet stories ever
- 34:00and mix radio and television together and makes a comprehensive list. So it's got
- 34:05a lot of history and background on Dragnet, not just Dragnet, but we
- 34:08also do Adam twelve in the book, and there were some very good lessons
- 34:13in that chapter. Others we did Frank race yours truly, Johnny Doller,
- 34:17and also Frank Cannon. It was really an enjoyable book to work on,
- 34:23not only any chance to spend time writing about my favorite characters, but really
- 34:30analyzing what the shows were all about. And I hope you'll pick up your
- 34:34copy as an ebook if you can purchase it at Amazon dot com. This
- 34:40weekend is the last time that the book will be available at the introductory price
- 34:46of two ninety nine, and you can also during that same period pick up
- 34:52All I Needed to Know I learned from Colombo for not in nine Stans.
- 34:54I've already put out requests for auditions from narrators for the audiobook version, because
- 35:00I know that's something that people will definitely want. As All I needed to
- 35:05Know I learned from Colombo is actually the best selling audiobook I've ever published,
- 35:10so that'll be coming in the future. I want to thank you so much
- 35:14for listening, and that will do it for today. We will be back
- 35:17tomorrow with Video Theater, another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow television program,
- 35:23and on Monday we'll be back with the same and next Saturday join us
