- 0:12Jamie Elizabeth and I am so glad you are spending time with us
- 0:16today to listen. Hi and welcome back to, she
- 0:22speaks like podcast, I have with me, author, a me nor use who
- 0:28will be sharing with us, a raw story, about her escape from the
- 0:33abuse of a psychiatrist, and how God showed her a way out, and
- 0:38brought her healing. Hi Amy.
- 0:40I'm so glad you're here. Hi, thank you.
- 0:44Well, I know you wrote a book about this, a memoir is called
- 0:50Upon and as I was looking, you kind of had a play on words
- 0:54there. You had PR ay, aye D.
- 0:58And then above that are on top of the, a you put an e.
- 1:04And then the subtitle is finding my freedom from therapist abuse.
- 1:11And I wanted to let our listener know that your book was first
- 1:15place and Inspire, Christian writers, great openings On test
- 1:20for nonfiction and you have published many articles on this
- 1:25topic and you have a Blog. And so I would love for you just
- 1:31to Dive Right into where this all begins.
- 1:37This abuse take us back. Yes in 2013, I start seeing this
- 1:45therapist, he's also a psychiatrist and he is an Are at
- 1:50my new church. I was attending Celebrate
- 1:54Recovery the year before and really became what I say is a
- 1:58new believer just really on fire for God, just realizing how
- 2:02personal and present he was. And so, when I found out this
- 2:05therapist was an elder at this new church that I was attending.
- 2:08I just thought I was in. Excellent hands.
- 2:11I went to see him really for issues, just surrounding past,
- 2:15sexual abuse, low self-esteem. And I just wanted to work on my
- 2:19marriage. Age and parenting and things
- 2:21like that. I've been, you know, taken
- 2:25advantage of many times in my lifetime but never have I ever
- 2:29experienced grooming or like a slow manipulation.
- 2:34No luring me into a relationship where I was supposedly if he
- 2:38cared about me and I was special to him and he pretended as if he
- 2:44was like a father figure to me. And so it was very a very slow
- 2:49Insidious Process. And one of the reasons I write
- 2:53the book is because I didn't even think as an adult, I could
- 2:56be manipulated in a way in such a way.
- 2:58And so I wanted other victims to know, you know, that they
- 3:01weren't alone either and I wanted people don't understand
- 3:06to be able to read the book and say, well, I kind of get it.
- 3:09I kind of see how we could. All be taken advantage of in
- 3:11this way. Yeah I got to say when you sent
- 3:15me your book, I was reading it and that's one of the things.
- 3:20That stood out to me how gradual this manipulation was.
- 3:26Yeah, I've been seeing them once a week for an hour from I think
- 3:29like April to December. So it's something that's almost
- 3:32a year before there was even something that I noticed to be
- 3:36maybe a red flag and even then it seemed kind of minor and I
- 3:40thought well I'm just kind of overreacting and I'm probably
- 3:43just a little too sensitive and and that and the events were so
- 3:47far apart that I didn't connect any of Until I got out, it was a
- 3:53year and a month that I saw him, and at the end, it was blatant
- 3:57sexual abuse. Again, I still thought it had
- 4:00come from a place of caring and concern and maybe he went too
- 4:04far or maybe there was some weird relationship with his
- 4:08mother. Something I still did not see
- 4:10that was a Sinister Thing. Once I was able to get out and
- 4:14look back, I realized it had been orchestrated starting on
- 4:19day one. One and the whole thing had
- 4:21been, you know, a joke to him. You know, I've never encountered
- 4:26and that kind of evil, I've never encountered a sociopath
- 4:29and real life, and I didn't even really hard for my brain to
- 4:33grasp That you can do that to another human being.
- 4:38You know, Justin was objects to be discarded, right?
- 4:42So what made you think, what was that first thing?
- 4:47That was like, oh this is like wrong, this is inappropriate.
- 4:52The first thing was in December around Christmas time, I came in
- 4:57and he offered to rub my feet or my shoulders for a Christmas
- 5:00present and I panic and I froze. And you know, in my mind I was
- 5:07thinking like, say something like pick one like, you know,
- 5:11it, you know, didn't feel like a choice and and I felt like he's
- 5:18a professional. He's like a grandfather type,
- 5:20he's a therapist. He's probably offering this for
- 5:23therapeutic reasons and you're just really oversensitive.
- 5:26Like he's just asking to touch her feet.
- 5:30Like is that really that big of a deal?
- 5:32So I kind of like, talked myself Of down and again felt like well
- 5:36you have to pick one or one or the other and I think I said
- 5:38shoulder up and then the minute he started to, he came over and
- 5:41rub my shoulders. It freaked me out and I said,
- 5:43our feet rep Pedro just to get him back and sadly I felt like I
- 5:48had to sit through that and pretend that it was comfortable,
- 5:52it's like heaven forbid. I make somebody else feel
- 5:54uncomfortable for making me feel uncomfortable.
- 5:57It's like you know I knew that it was weird and I didn't I
- 6:02don't know that I felt that it was wrong but I thought it was
- 6:04definitely strange and definitely made me feel
- 6:08uncomfortable. I just wasn't sure if I had the
- 6:12right. It's like, who was I to tell
- 6:14him? He was being an appropriate.
- 6:17Mmm, so I sat through it and then it became commonplace and
- 6:23he rubbed my feet after that, and I thought it was great.
- 6:25And I thought I loved that I was More than just a regular client.
- 6:31And I knew that he saw me as like a daughter and I truly
- 6:36thought, you know, kind of being this may be this naive, new
- 6:39Christian that God was blessing me in this way that he was
- 6:43trying to show me that there could be safe, nurturing touch
- 6:47from a male and that there can be, you know, sort of making up
- 6:52for maybe nurturing that I didn't get as a child and
- 6:58showing me, it's okay. And so I thought my reactions
- 7:01were like, because of my experiences that makes sense,
- 7:07and that God was trying to show me, it's okay if it's with a
- 7:11safe person, that's that's fine and it's human and it's normal
- 7:14to desire that so, Yeah, that was the first great brainwashed,
- 7:23right? Yeah.
- 7:24Just, you know it's utterly confusing.
- 7:26I mean just imagine it's like sometimes I think you go to your
- 7:30dentist and I mean I know that's different because you don't
- 7:34build a relationship but they all the sudden offer something.
- 7:37That's so out there. I mean, a lot of times I just
- 7:41breathe and I just get through it.
- 7:44I just get through it so that I can leave my brain doesn't know
- 7:48how to Process 7th handle it. Yeah.
- 7:51So you went through a abuse earlier on in life.
- 7:56So do you think this was just kind of not healing from that
- 8:01and just going into, you know, feeling like you don't have a
- 8:05voice, you're not worthy enough. You think it just carried over?
- 8:10Yeah, I definitely think that abuse at a young age, it kind of
- 8:14puts a Target on your back and it lets, you know, that you are
- 8:17not worth as much as regular people.
- 8:20That this wouldn't have happened to you.
- 8:21If you were that, there's something different about you
- 8:25bad about you almost as if you need to make up for that, you
- 8:30know, overcompensate for this Badness, that that we carry.
- 8:36And so yeah, when when someone is then inappropriate with us
- 8:41when we're older and we know that it isn't right?
- 8:44We see it, but we don't feel that we have enough value.
- 8:49To say anything to, like I said, make the abuser feel
- 8:54uncomfortable. Hmm, right.
- 8:57Okay. So when the this finally end,
- 9:00like when was it like a Awakening?
- 9:03You're like okay this is this is we're done here.
- 9:08There was kind of A build-up but he started he tried to morph the
- 9:12relationship eventually from a father-daughter to more
- 9:14romantic. And that was extremely
- 9:16unsettling to me and not. Okay, with me and I let him know
- 9:19that. Is not okay with me that I
- 9:20wasn't comfortable with that. But at the same time, as I was
- 9:24attached. So I kept going back and I kept
- 9:26thinking, well, well, he'll stop when I make him realize that
- 9:30this isn't what I want. He'll stop.
- 9:33But at the very end, when he started hinting towards sexual
- 9:38things, I was like, oh my gosh, get me out of here and what
- 9:44really cinched it for me was because again, you have to
- 9:47remember, although I didn't want that, it was inappropriate.
- 9:52I did think that he was a kind of person that he cared about
- 9:54me, but that he was, I don't know, somehow tripped up or
- 9:59somehow went too far. I didn't have the Sinister
- 10:03piece. So at the very end Last session,
- 10:09it's really sad for me to say this.
- 10:10Every time I say it, but I asked him if he would just talk to me,
- 10:15if we could keep clothes on and he could just talk to me, he's
- 10:17my therapist and I'm begging him, you know?
- 10:22Asking him. And his answer was so cold and
- 10:25so cruel. And I saw then what I needed to
- 10:29see that there's zero care and concern, for me, I mean nothing
- 10:35to him and, you know, as sad as this is, I still felt like I had
- 10:41to get through the session. I didn't feel I could just leave
- 10:43because I mean that would be rude.
- 10:44Right? So I kind of I get through that
- 10:48session and I leave and I know I'm never going back.
- 10:51So it Really, really seeing the evil there at the end, seeing
- 10:55just the cruelty in the coldness.
- 10:57I just had no idea that could possibly be there.
- 11:00I suspected it. I was starting to see glimpses
- 11:02of it but again I didn't know that could even really exist and
- 11:06that's what I needed to see. And then I was and I was praying
- 11:10just day and night at first I was praying, God, are you trying
- 11:13to tell me to get out or is our or Satan, trying to take away,
- 11:16something good, that you gave me.
- 11:18I mean, I was so confused and then towards the end when it was
- 11:21clearly, Be inappropriate. I still felt like I couldn't
- 11:26leave him. It would devastate him too if I
- 11:28left him because that's what he told me and he was, I thought he
- 11:30was fragile and I felt guilty to leave and I was praying and God
- 11:34literally said to me, Amy, he is not your problem to fix.
- 11:38And I was like, you're right. And then I drove to my Pastor's
- 11:42house and I told he and his wife, everything.
- 11:45So the The bond is so confusing because even when I knew he was
- 11:53hurting me, I still felt like I couldn't leave.
- 11:56Yeah. Yeah, that's enemy.
- 11:59The devil likes to confuse us. I'm sorry.
- 12:03You went through that. Now, take us through the healing
- 12:07process. Yeah, there's a lot of stages,
- 12:09but in the very beginning, I didn't think I could survive it
- 12:12and I literally clung to God, because he's all I had, I didn't
- 12:15trust anyone not a soul, I didn't want to tell my husband,
- 12:19I didn't want to tell anyone, I just wanted to get better and
- 12:23move on and keep the secret. So you know, I so I come to God
- 12:29and my faith was intact, but what I really needed to know in
- 12:33the beginning was am I the only one on the planet?
- 12:36That is this naive? That's this dumb.
- 12:40That's this needy, whatever it was, it was bad about me and I
- 12:44found an organization of adult. Victims of therapists and clergy
- 12:50abuse. And I just hung on their words,
- 12:52they just told me over and over, you're not alone and it wasn't
- 12:55your fault. You're not alone, it wasn't your
- 12:57fault. I started to accept that I
- 12:59wasn't alone and that I wasn't the only one and that made me
- 13:01feel better but it took a very long time for me to sort out,
- 13:06what was my fault and what wasn't, I mean, I hated myself
- 13:09because I didn't understand it and you know, eventually I tell
- 13:14my husband everything because that's just you know, the In
- 13:18that I am and and we have to begin our own roller coaster
- 13:21healing process. Eventually I decided to report
- 13:26this doctor to the medical board and that was another step.
- 13:29And just speaking up for myself and even and, you know, just the
- 13:33fact that people strangers wanted to fight for me was just
- 13:37crazy to me. I just couldn't believe that
- 13:40they would care about just me like and so that was healing and
- 13:45I feel like God allowed me to be the only victim for a long time
- 13:48because he wanted me to know that, even if it was just me, I
- 13:51was valuable enough to be fought for Later on another victim
- 13:55comes forward and there was some healing in that especially the
- 14:00healing that I needed to accept that.
- 14:03I had never been special to the abuser.
- 14:06Anyway, that's just another stage.
- 14:07You kind of have to, you have to grieve this illusion.
- 14:11You have to grieve the fantasy that you thought it was and that
- 14:15takes time. And then I eventually do file a
- 14:19civil suit against anding up for myself.
- 14:21Was healing, but the true healing came.
- 14:24With really writing out what happened to me so I could
- 14:28understand it seeing the intricate grooming.
- 14:32And recognizing these lies that I've been believing about
- 14:36myself. All these years and how they
- 14:39were, you know, making me vulnerable to predators and, and
- 14:43how they were just utterly damaging.
- 14:47And so what I did was I started to write love Letters From God
- 14:52to myself, even though I didn't feel it, I didn't feel God's
- 14:54love. I didn't feel.
- 14:55I deserved his love, but I knew that scripture didn't lie and so
- 14:59I knew that it was truth. So, I wrote it anyway.
- 15:01And so, I would just kind of throw it at God, like, well,
- 15:04look what I did. Well, I didn't leave sooner
- 15:06well, you know, kind of the but, but but and letting him say over
- 15:10and over to me, child, this is how I see you and this was not
- 15:14your fault and Love you, and I forgive you and eventually those
- 15:18things started to kind of penetrate.
- 15:20And that's where the true healing came is is the healing
- 15:24of the self-hatred that I'd always carried.
- 15:27So, I feel like God, use this experience to heal me from this
- 15:31trauma, but also to heal me from traumas that started at the age
- 15:34of three. Yeah, yeah, his truth taking
- 15:40root in your life so that you can refresh.
- 15:45Your renew your mind, right? What the word and what God says
- 15:50to you. I love that.
- 15:51You know, there was this enlightening and this Awakening
- 15:56in your mind and heart that God told you.
- 16:01Hey look, this is your identity, not what happened to you in
- 16:06life. Don't Define Yourself by that.
- 16:09You know, I give you your identity so did the
- 16:14psychiatrist. True.
- 16:15Stand up getting in trouble or what happened to him about a
- 16:20week after my pastor did confront him.
- 16:22And he agreed to step down as Elder.
- 16:24Obviously, the medical board. Did their full investigation and
- 16:30allowed him to surrender his license?
- 16:34Which doesn't sound like a lot, but at least it did stop him
- 16:37from practicing and my state and they let me know that it was
- 16:42only the I think the fifth permanent surrender of license
- 16:47in 20 years that they'd ever issued.
- 16:49So typically a doctor can reapply for their license after
- 16:52one year. But his was a permanent
- 16:54surrender and that was healing and then yeah there's no
- 16:57criminal legislation in my state for therapists abuse in 32 of
- 17:01our state's there is Criminal legislation.
- 17:03Against therapist sexual involvement with a client.
- 17:07It's even it's completely unethical.
- 17:10Even for therapists to be involved with a client sexually.
- 17:13After therapy has terminated, it can still be damaging then
- 17:17because you never the relation to therapist client
- 17:21relationship, really never goes away.
- 17:23And the therapist is always going to be in the position of
- 17:25power there. So because I didn't have the
- 17:28that opportunity available to me, I did file a civil suit
- 17:32which was essentially just Just between, you know, me and his
- 17:36insurance company but it was something.
- 17:39It was just a way that I could fight for myself though.
- 17:43Yes and no. Yeah, he deserved.
- 17:46I don't think so but I had to really trust that God can handle
- 17:50that and let that go and not get caught up in the unfairness of
- 17:54it all. So God is a God of Justice.
- 17:57He's just and the vengeance is his says scripture.
- 18:01So even though we can't see In the natural God, you know, is
- 18:08doing the work for us to bring Justice Wright and I wanted to
- 18:14dive into your kind of the play on words of your book and maybe
- 18:19share something that we didn't really cover in the book.
- 18:22I thought that was such a great title.
- 18:26Thank you. I yeah, I love that too.
- 18:28It was important for me to have that title because it was the
- 18:32prey pra. Why Why that made me trust him?
- 18:36He was an elder at my church. He wore a cross necklace.
- 18:38He was on the prayer team and we literally began our sessions in
- 18:42prayer in his office. So I think I'm being preyed upon
- 18:49when really it is PR see why that is happening?
- 18:53You know, he the therapy was all about bringing Jesus into the
- 18:56broken places and he said the Holy Spirit was his boss.
- 19:00So it was very much in a spiritual setting.
- 19:03And that made it hard for me to spot.
- 19:07You know, the trickery mmm times when I would feel critical of
- 19:11maybe something he was saying or suggesting, I would think a my
- 19:14criticizing God, my criticizing like the holy spirit's plan or
- 19:19the therapy. And then, you know, as far as
- 19:23things we haven't covered in the book, I think just the
- 19:27devastation and the pain that comes when adult victims come
- 19:33forward. Forward.
- 19:33I think, I think there's a lot of judgment about victims that
- 19:38come forward and they have no idea what it takes, and what we
- 19:43have to go through to come forward.
- 19:45We have to risk, everything we have to risk.
- 19:47You know, spouses that may not understand.
- 19:50How are they going to understand?
- 19:51When we don't even understand what just happened.
- 19:53We have to risk your reputation. I had to lose, you know, my old
- 19:58church to answer your question. Yes, I'm struggling in the area
- 20:01of church, but I tried to stay, And I just couldn't, and the
- 20:04gossip Mill was in full swing, you know, the pastor didn't
- 20:07inform the congregation of what happened, so it just got to be
- 20:11whatever the gossip Mill, turned out.
- 20:13So and I live in a smaller town and so I'll never know to this
- 20:18day. When people look at me, you know
- 20:20what, they know or what they think.
- 20:22And I, again have to trust God, that that's one thing that I
- 20:26that I is important to me for victims to know, is that we
- 20:30don't know explanations to anyone and to victims of crimes,
- 20:33No, explanations about the crime.
- 20:35No, that's that's silly. I mean we would never expect
- 20:38that but in our situation we are owed an X.
- 20:42We owe an explanation / Society. At least that's how we feel
- 20:46because so many people don't understand it and it can be very
- 20:50easily labeled an affair but for it to be in a fair, there has to
- 20:54be consent and for there to be consent, there has to be an
- 20:57equal balance of power and there is no balance of power between
- 21:01doctor-patient therapist patient.
- 21:03Pastor congregant period. Now, what a false teacher a wolf
- 21:09in sheep's clothing. Yeah, horrible.
- 21:12And when I wrote this book, I hoped that the reader could see
- 21:17that someone could go through a tragedy like this.
- 21:21Even abuse by a religious leader and God can still be present and
- 21:26loving and you can still, you know, have your relationship
- 21:31with Jesus. Even when your relationship with
- 21:34church has been obliterated and I, you know, it kills me to
- 21:40think that these abusers would take away the relationship of
- 21:44the one person that truly understands us and loves us
- 21:47unconditionally my Is that victims can fight for that
- 21:50relationship with Jesus, even when they can't trust the
- 21:53church. That's okay.
- 21:54Yeah, that's good. Thanks Amy.
- 21:57Thank you for sharing this story.
- 21:59I know it's not easy to go through and retell again.
- 22:04You know, brings up emotions and whatnot but it's important for
- 22:08us to bring these up to the surface so that we don't feel
- 22:12like we're alone just like that. Helped you heal hearing other
- 22:16women. How did they get through this?
- 22:18This having other women come along beside you and say it
- 22:23wasn't your fault and this is how I got through own and got
- 22:27healing. So it's important for us to
- 22:30share our story and be a voice and I appreciate you coming on
- 22:34here and doing just that. Okay.
- 22:36So where can people buy your book and connect with you?
