[SPEAKER_00]: Today, we are sitting with Jen Drummond and absolutely amazing individual.
0:07
[SPEAKER_00]: Check this out, guys.
0:08
[SPEAKER_00]: She is a mom of seven, a Guinness Book World record holder working on her second Guinness Book of World Records accomplishments right now.
0:17
[SPEAKER_00]: She had a massive exit on course public speakers.
0:20
[SPEAKER_00]: She's got an awesome podcast and she's a multi bestselling author.
0:25
[SPEAKER_00]: Please welcome Jen Drummond.
0:27
[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to another episode of Coffee's.
0:29
[SPEAKER_02]: Hello, hello.
0:30
[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for the intro.
0:31
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Jen.
0:32
[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for flying in.
0:33
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'm just so blessed to have you here You know you're such an accomplished I would say young woman, but you're a mom of sevens and you probably have to feel young anymore Kids, but you sure are young in spirit.
0:48
[SPEAKER_00]: Hi, I'm young in spirit and you know you have such an Exuberance about you.
0:51
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just you know, it's magnetic and
0:53
[SPEAKER_00]: There's, you know, it's clear as day while you've accomplished the things you've accomplished and yours is accessible as, you know, I just made you out to be.
1:02
[SPEAKER_00]: So let's dive right into it.
1:04
[SPEAKER_00]: I'd like to ask many of our podcast guests the same question, which is what's your morning routine?
1:09
[SPEAKER_02]: who my morning routine actually starts the night before okay so for me the night before I like to lay out all my outfits I run through my day so I like run visualize it in my head what I'm doing what I'm wearing how I'm feeling and then when I wake up in the morning it's like I already did the dress rehearsal and it's just time to go nice yeah and then the morning consists of you know you don't got a cold-plunge routine or a
1:36
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't hold punch in the morning.
1:37
[SPEAKER_00]: If I hold punches at the end of the day, how do you stay in such great shape?
1:40
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm an exercise every day for sure.
1:42
[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, no.
1:44
[SPEAKER_02]: So I wake up in the morning before my kids wake up because I like that quiet time.
1:47
[SPEAKER_02]: And then I'll shower and then I'll start making them breakfast as they start rolling out of bed.
1:53
[SPEAKER_00]: We can food for seven kids.
1:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Whoever wants to get up and eat will either make like they love morning muffins they love eggs Or they love cinnamon rolls so that's kind of what I mix between and then I'll take them to the bus stop And then I get my day back to me.
2:08
[SPEAKER_02]: Man's you're cooking for seven kids in the morning That's just because it's when they're like groggy enough to think you're cool and they'll talk to you They're not thinking like what do I tell mom what do I not tell mom at that time of day you get everything out of them
2:19
[SPEAKER_00]: Nice to love it.
2:20
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, uh, I want to talk about your story.
2:22
[SPEAKER_00]: So you have quite a magnificent story.
2:24
[SPEAKER_00]: You were involved in a severe car accident, near death experience.
2:29
[SPEAKER_00]: And from that experience, I mean, like, you went from near death to climbing mountains.
2:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Huh?
2:35
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, to near death to climbing mountains.
2:37
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, climbing the biggest mountains.
2:39
[SPEAKER_02]: Definitely.
2:40
[SPEAKER_00]: The biggest mountains.
2:40
[SPEAKER_00]: So let's just kind of talk, you know, talk about that.
2:43
[SPEAKER_00]: Like,
2:48
[SPEAKER_00]: that.
2:48
[SPEAKER_00]: Like what was the mindset that you had to really get out of the rut that you were in bad physical shape after that you would probably mentally like drained.
3:00
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, mentally I was, that was probably the biggest part to heal because every single time I got in the car, my heart would race and I would drive down the highway and I would get next to semi and I'd want to get as far away from the semi as possible because when I got my accident, I was in an accident with a semi truck.
3:20
[SPEAKER_02]: But I just remember the car being totaled, I ended up being okay, but when I went to go
3:29
[SPEAKER_02]: And then they gave me the keys and I was like oh wait I need to drive and so for 45 minutes I sat in the parking lot negotiating with myself saying if I don't drive now the fear of driving is going to get bigger So I just need to do it scared So I did I drove home 35 minutes.
3:48
[SPEAKER_02]: It felt like 35 hours and when I got home I took a nap for like two hours of running
3:54
[SPEAKER_02]: That's how draining it was.
3:55
[SPEAKER_02]: And it took me six months.
3:58
[SPEAKER_02]: It was like almost exactly six months because my mom came to visit and when I took her to the airport to fly home.
4:05
[SPEAKER_02]: When I got to the airport I realized, I made it all the way to the airport without freaking out once.
4:10
[SPEAKER_02]: This is amazing.
4:11
[SPEAKER_02]: This is as long as I've driven without having my, you know, my heart or talking myself down or whatever else like that and then eventually it just got normal again.
4:19
[SPEAKER_02]: But for six months, it was doing it, scared, doing it, exhausted, doing it, not excited.
4:26
[SPEAKER_02]: And then finally it disappeared and I was good to go and now I can drive and not think twice.
4:33
[SPEAKER_00]: So you went through, how did you overcome that, that, you know, worry that scare?
4:39
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think it's just exposure therapy.
4:41
[SPEAKER_02]: You keep putting your body in it and you keep talking yourself off the ledge and you honor the fact that when I came home, I didn't break myself that I needed an app.
4:52
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, man, that was a lot.
4:54
[SPEAKER_02]: I needed an app and I allowed myself to take an app and I was kind to myself during that process and healed.
5:01
[SPEAKER_00]: Now I've noticed like you're just not scared, you're a risk taker.
5:06
[SPEAKER_00]: Most entrepreneurs start off scared.
5:09
[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think entrepreneurs have wrong when it comes to risk?
5:15
[SPEAKER_02]: Hmm.
5:16
[SPEAKER_02]: I think you need to take a dance with risk.
5:19
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so for example, I had never slept in a tent before when I decided to take on this world record.
5:26
[SPEAKER_02]: And so when we looked at the mouth ends, we broke them down into what would be the most difficult, would be the most dangerous, which would maybe be like my easier ones to get.
5:36
[SPEAKER_02]: And when we were building our plan, it was making sure that I got some of those winds early, so I could use that momentum to get me through the harder pieces and build that confidence, as I was climbing the easier climbs.
5:49
[SPEAKER_02]: So when you're an entrepreneur and you're taking on this risk, you need to build in winds into your day to have that momentum carry you through some of the
6:05
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, man, I've climbed a lot.
6:07
[SPEAKER_02]: So my first climb was a mountain named Amma Zablam, which is located in Nepal, gorgeous mountain, amazing experience, still my favorite climb to this day.
6:17
[SPEAKER_02]: My second climb was Ojo Stel Salado, which is located in the Atacama Desert of Chile.
6:25
[SPEAKER_02]: Sounds exotic and exciting.
6:27
[SPEAKER_02]: It was miserable and horrible because when you climb a volcano It's like climbing a pimple you're on the feature in the desert like there's nothing else to look at I'm just dealing with sand wind and like monotony the entire climb
6:45
[SPEAKER_00]: And no beauty, huh?
6:46
[SPEAKER_02]: No beauty because you're on the feature.
6:48
[SPEAKER_02]: So everything else is just sand and sight for as long as you can see.
6:51
[SPEAKER_02]: And when you're climbing, you could be climbing for three hours and you don't really have anything visually that's changing, so you don't really feel like you're making momentum.
7:00
[SPEAKER_02]: And when you're climbing on sand, you slide down half a step for every step you step up.
7:06
[SPEAKER_02]: And so it's just one of these climbs that I'm like if there is a climb that has containers on the side of the mountain because it gets so windy, a tent will rip that you need to sleep with a container, I'm not doing that climb like I I'm not interested there was containers on that mountain there's containers on the mountain because it got so windy your tent would rip and then you wouldn't be able to survive.
7:26
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, yeah, I mean, I've never, I've met mountaineers.
7:29
[SPEAKER_00]: I've never met a female mountaineer who's done these kind of, like, kind of, like, ever, like your, your something else.
7:36
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, entrepreneurs are a little crazy sometimes.
7:40
[SPEAKER_00]: We are, like, you're like a little different than crazy.
7:43
[SPEAKER_00]: Next level crazy.
7:44
[SPEAKER_00]: You're like next level crazy.
7:45
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, where do you think that was birth from?
7:48
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I've never seen that or experienced it or heard about someone that does that.
7:52
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, like, I embrace failure.
7:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Like I think when you're an entrepreneur or you're at the top of your game, whatever that is, you are a constant reiteration of failure.
8:04
[SPEAKER_02]: And failure is just data points.
8:06
[SPEAKER_02]: You don't take it personal.
8:07
[SPEAKER_02]: You don't make it about yourself.
8:08
[SPEAKER_02]: You're just like, okay, this is what didn't work.
8:10
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna tweak a little bit and try to make it better.
8:12
[SPEAKER_02]: This didn't work.
8:13
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna tweak a little bit and try to make it better.
8:15
[SPEAKER_02]: you know like you look at mr. beast whose famous for YouTube like his videos they figured out the formula and keep tweaking him a little bit and a little bit to have them go as good as they go if you have that mindset of this failure is feedback to make this better you just want to keep making it better and it's this addiction of like how do I do it better now what do you think your greatest failure has been
8:44
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, a lot of failures and tons of iterations and having these massive mountains.
8:49
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I think it's a death of a thousand paper cuts.
8:52
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if you're making one massive failure that causes you to bleed out.
8:56
[SPEAKER_02]: It's all these little teeny tiny paper cuts that are causing you to pivot or shift or move.
9:00
[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know if one plays a bigger role than another.
9:03
[SPEAKER_02]: I do know I, on my list of life, I wanted to get my pilot's license.
9:10
[SPEAKER_02]: And when I started down that path, I realized it was really boring, and I didn't really enjoy it.
9:16
[SPEAKER_02]: And the entire time I was in the air, I was looking for a place to land of something what wrong.
9:22
[SPEAKER_02]: And it was really hard for me to shut that brain off.
9:25
[SPEAKER_02]: So when I came home, I was always looking for something wrong, so that I could make sure the environment was safe.
9:31
[SPEAKER_02]: You can't do that with seven kids, because there's always something wrong.
9:33
[SPEAKER_02]: And so for me, I realized that's not something I need to pursue because it doesn't put me in a mindset to enjoy my life.
9:40
[SPEAKER_02]: And so I stopped pursuing that.
9:42
[SPEAKER_02]: And I think a lot of times, those of us who are like fiercely competitive or achievement-oriented, we have a hard time letting go of things that we shouldn't really be doing.
9:54
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, you know, having accomplished what you've accomplished, obviously you're really legacy driven.
10:00
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, what do you think, and you have some kids?
10:03
[SPEAKER_00]: So what do you think your legacy is for your kids?
10:05
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it having built this business, this massive business, and this exit isn't being a world record holder like you're driven by legacy?
10:14
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you know, I think it is, like the mountains were just a space for beat to explore my inner mountains.
10:22
[SPEAKER_02]: It was quiet, it was distraction free.
10:25
[SPEAKER_02]: There was nothing that could keep me from my own mind and facing my own demons.
10:31
[SPEAKER_02]: And those have always been limiting beliefs.
10:33
[SPEAKER_02]: So I hope my legacy is if something's limiting you, it's meant to be challenged to expand you so lean in.
10:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, um, you're not just posting about it, you're actually about it.
10:48
[SPEAKER_00]: You're, you're, what is the next mountain, you're climbing?
10:51
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so I'm going to go climb to Nali and May of this year.
10:55
[SPEAKER_00]: Is that going to be a world record holder?
10:57
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, it'll be, I have two mountains left for that next world record.
11:00
[SPEAKER_02]: So I got the world record for being the first woman to climb all the second summits, which are the second highest point on each of the seven continents.
11:10
[SPEAKER_02]: And so then for a lot of those climbs, I would climb the highest point first.
11:14
[SPEAKER_02]: to get acclimated, and then I would do the second highest point because it was harder, and when I was filing with Guinness, they're like, hey, you have a couple more mountains, and you have another world record.
11:24
[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm like, okay, well, if I'm this close, I'm going to go get those done.
11:27
[SPEAKER_02]: So Denali is one that I have left, which is the highest point in North America, and then there's one in Russia called Elbrus, which I'll do once it's safe enough to travel there.
11:37
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, what's your next big idea right now?
11:41
[SPEAKER_02]: my next big idea.
11:42
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm playing with ideas right now.
11:45
[SPEAKER_02]: I really love speaking on stages and just moving the crowd and helping them figure out ways to make whatever's in their head possible.
11:55
[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like maybe the next evolution of that will be some retreats where we go out on the mountains and just experience the struggle because I think fear shows up.
12:06
[SPEAKER_02]: but it feels the same on our body so when we learn to conquer it in different environments we can carry that forward into an area that we're struggling how did you conquer fear i mean i don't know if i've ever conquered fear i think i just do things scared on a regular basis because it has a way of showing up in unique circumstances and like oh here you are again i thought we got rid of you it's never disappeared
12:30
[SPEAKER_00]: So you climb these mountain.
12:31
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you climb because it's not just like hiking, right?
12:34
[SPEAKER_00]: You're climbing.
12:35
[SPEAKER_02]: So you're, you know, yeah, and I had a fear of heights, which I didn't know I had when I got into this.
12:41
[SPEAKER_02]: Because I can like look outside of skyscraper and be okay or I can be on a chair lift and be okay.
12:46
[SPEAKER_02]: But when I was on a rope like climbing a wall, all of a sudden I started to sweat and pan it and freak out.
12:54
[SPEAKER_02]: So I came off the wall and I looked at my coach and I'm like, what's going on?
12:57
[SPEAKER_02]: Is it give a fear of heights?
12:59
[SPEAKER_02]: I can't have a fear of heights, I just signed up for this world record, like I have to be able to get through this.
13:04
[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, well, the only way we're going to get through it is if we train it out of you.
13:07
[SPEAKER_02]: So I'd go back on that wall and I'd go one hand, hold higher, and then I'd come all the way down.
13:12
[SPEAKER_02]: And then I'd go back up the wall and I'd try to go a hand, hold higher, and I'd come all the way back down.
13:17
[SPEAKER_02]: And so I eventually like worked it out, but if I haven't been climbing for a few months, I need to go to the climbing gym and work that fear through my body again because it shows
13:27
[SPEAKER_00]: Just you talking about it made my hands sweaty because I do have a immense fear.
13:34
[SPEAKER_02]: I had like my leg was shaking.
13:37
[SPEAKER_02]: I was like turning ghost away.
13:39
[SPEAKER_02]: I was like sweating.
13:40
[SPEAKER_02]: My hands were sweating.
13:42
[SPEAKER_02]: I came down and was like, oh man, this is bad.
13:45
[SPEAKER_02]: I had never had fear manifest physically.
13:48
[SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was just a mental thing, but when it showed up physically, it was horrible.
13:53
[SPEAKER_00]: yeah how can i overcome my fear heights and i don't know i don't know i don't know i mean it is just work and it is work every single day like i had to go every day because if i took a couple days off it was harder to get back now do you ever feel like success is like a cost of me yet you have to keep wearing or um you know it's something that like is always it's just always transitional
14:17
[SPEAKER_02]: it's transitional, I think it's the human experience, like you get to have success in one field, and then you wanna try to have it in another field, because you've already figured that game out.
14:31
[SPEAKER_02]: So it's like, how do I learn it in this arena, or that arena?
14:34
[SPEAKER_02]: And that just gives you a broader aspect of like experiencing life, and success, we get to define.
14:41
[SPEAKER_02]: Like I used to think it was just being on top of the mountain.
14:45
[SPEAKER_02]: And now, for me, success is sustainability.
14:49
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, what gets to keep going, even if I'm not here?
14:53
[SPEAKER_02]: What does this look like because I stepped into this arena?
14:55
[SPEAKER_02]: How am I shifting this industry or making an impact?
14:59
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, you, by all definitions, would define success, seven kids.
15:05
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm the world's second-tias summit.
15:14
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that is, you know, the definition of having attained success.
15:19
[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, for you it's steeper, you're not on to your next mountain out.
15:22
[SPEAKER_00]: You're trying to move crowds, you're trying to speak on as many stages as possible and inspire people.
15:30
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, you're on to the next quest.
15:34
[SPEAKER_02]: Because I think success becomes significance once you've attained it.
15:39
[SPEAKER_02]: And so to me, significance is like if I climb the mountain who cares, but if I can help you climb the mountain, then I made a difference.
15:47
[SPEAKER_02]: And that's true success.
15:49
[SPEAKER_02]: So for me, I think we all have a mountain decline.
15:52
[SPEAKER_02]: We're born to climb.
15:53
[SPEAKER_02]: You can't roll up hill.
15:54
[SPEAKER_02]: It's a choice you have to make every single day.
15:57
[SPEAKER_02]: When I climbed Everest, every single step I had to choose.
16:04
[SPEAKER_02]: and so if I can help somebody else climb whatever their mountain is, metaphorical or physical, then I won.
16:11
[SPEAKER_02]: And then they won.
16:12
[SPEAKER_02]: And it's so much more fun.
16:13
[SPEAKER_02]: You have kids.
16:14
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, when we used to play sports and you got a soccer goal, woohoo.
16:18
[SPEAKER_02]: If my kid gets a goal in soccer, I'm like the happiest mom you've ever seen in your life.
16:23
[SPEAKER_02]: And so for me, it's so much more rewarding to watch somebody else hit the summit than even me reaching the summit anymore.
16:31
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I wanted to kind of hold it off in the podcast, but I'll just dive into it.
16:36
[SPEAKER_00]: So, seven kids.
16:38
[SPEAKER_00]: What's it like raising seven kids as a single one?
16:40
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well, so seven kids are just so much fun, right?
16:44
[SPEAKER_02]: You have seven personalities.
16:46
[SPEAKER_02]: So you're parenting seven different ways.
16:48
[SPEAKER_00]: What's the youngest?
16:49
[SPEAKER_02]: The youngest are 12, so I've twin 12 year olds.
16:52
[SPEAKER_02]: And the oldest?
16:52
[SPEAKER_02]: 18 now.
16:54
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, hard to believe.
16:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Because I feel like I should be 18.
16:57
[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, I know, so I have a senior, a junior, a sophomore, a freshman, skip eighth grade, have a seventh grader, and then twin sixth graders.
17:05
[SPEAKER_02]: And
17:06
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it is so much fun because they view like I love watching how they do life or how they process things or what they think or who interprets whatever I say different ways.
17:19
[SPEAKER_02]: Somebody will take it serious, somebody will take it funny, somebody will be like, well, that didn't really matter.
17:24
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, well, it kind of did.
17:26
[SPEAKER_02]: And so it's just, yeah, it's just fun.
17:30
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, how are you teaching them to conquer their mountains?
17:35
[SPEAKER_02]: Has a parent?
17:36
[SPEAKER_02]: I think you get the opportunity to expose them to different challenges and different things.
17:41
[SPEAKER_02]: So I've taken my three oldest to climb Kilimanjaro, which is the highest mountain in Africa.
17:47
[SPEAKER_02]: and they climbed it they climbed it they got to the top they hated me the first day because all of their friends are going to Mexico for spring break and I made them go climb a mountain in Africa I'm going to go climb now to Mount Clinton in general like oh cool dude we'll be partying in Mexico exactly it was what was happening so they hated me but then they you can't have cell phones right because the cell phone coverage doesn't work so for a week without phones
18:13
[SPEAKER_00]: That's amazing by itself.
18:15
[SPEAKER_02]: It was an awesome experience by itself and it was fun because they got to experience it because the first two days or three days they were frustrated and mad and then we got like a a tingeous cell service for a second so a whole bunch of messages came in but they couldn't respond back and the messages that came in they're like oh my gosh this is the same thing that goes on every single day and all things happened by the end of the climb it took us eight days to climb and get down.
18:40
[SPEAKER_02]: They didn't even want to turn on their phones so like I don't even want to know because it's all going to be the same story I didn't miss anything.
18:46
[SPEAKER_02]: I already know and they got to the top of them out and and they felt so good They earned it right.
18:53
[SPEAKER_02]: It took them days no one could carry them up the mountain They had to make the decision to do it.
18:58
[SPEAKER_02]: They had to wake up at midnight to go for the summit push They had to do like all these different things in that built such a confidence in them when we came back They were different and it was so awesome to watch
19:10
[SPEAKER_00]: What an incredible story.
19:13
[SPEAKER_00]: Just take your kids to hike Mount Kilimanjaro at O'Change tonight.
19:16
[SPEAKER_02]: It dies, right?
19:17
[SPEAKER_02]: And the fun thing about this is like we're in this gorgeous gear, right?
19:21
[SPEAKER_02]: They're in perfect gear from north face and all the different brands.
19:24
[SPEAKER_02]: And the guys that are helping us climb are in crocs and flip flops and t-shirts.
19:29
[SPEAKER_02]: and they're singing songs, they're super happy, they're so grateful but you were working.
19:34
[SPEAKER_02]: Like one of my sons was like, Mom, we need to bring these people back to Utah and work at Panda Express, they'd love it.
19:40
[SPEAKER_00]: They're just in flip-flops going up camp, not coming during the night.
19:43
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's bananas, but yeah.
19:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Is that easy for them?
19:45
[SPEAKER_02]: and it's that easy for them because they do it all the time so they're acclimatized and they're not having the struggle that we're having and they're so grateful to be out in nature, they're singing songs, they're having fun and in fact one night when we were at one of the camps my kid said like enthusiasm is power.
20:04
[SPEAKER_02]: and I get his because when you can show up enthusiastic about what you're doing, you infect everybody around you and everybody has a good time.
20:13
[SPEAKER_02]: And so when the guys would come and they'd start singing their songs and doing the dances by the end, the boys were doing the same thing.
20:19
[SPEAKER_02]: In the beginning, they were judging and being like what's going on.
20:22
[SPEAKER_02]: And by the end, they won my kids over and it was an amazing experience.
20:28
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that's one thing I haven't heard and to hear it from a youth, it's even more profound.
20:36
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
20:37
[SPEAKER_00]: And enthusiasm is power.
20:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
20:40
[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, that really plays into my own life.
20:43
[SPEAKER_00]: Like I show up happy every day.
20:44
[SPEAKER_00]: I show up in enthusiastic everyday to work.
20:47
[SPEAKER_00]: I never show up like gragey or pissed off and it makes sense.
20:50
[SPEAKER_00]: It allows me to just dominate what I do.
20:54
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
20:54
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I love it.
20:55
[SPEAKER_02]: If you're having fun, like watch out, because the person having fun is the hardest person to be all day long, right?
21:02
[SPEAKER_02]: When we were climbing this section of Mount Everest, there's a section called the Loat say Face.
21:07
[SPEAKER_02]: It's everybody's least favorite section, because it's basically a 3000 700 foot vertical stairmaster.
21:15
[SPEAKER_02]: and you're out in the element.
21:16
[SPEAKER_02]: So there's nothing to protect you from the wind or the sun or anything and you're going for hours.
21:21
[SPEAKER_02]: When we were going through this section, it was cloudy out so I put on goggles and I had pink lenses in my goggles which allow you to see depth perception when it's darker.
21:31
[SPEAKER_02]: And so I have these pink goggles on after hiking for about 30 minutes, I kind of forget that we're hiking and my mind starts to be imaginative and everything around me looks pink.
21:42
[SPEAKER_02]: So I feel like I'm in a cotton candy machine.
21:44
[SPEAKER_02]: And then I start thinking about going to the circus with my grandparents when I was younger.
21:47
[SPEAKER_02]: And I think of playing candy land with my kids.
21:50
[SPEAKER_02]: And then the rope that I'm tied to at this moment looks like a watermelon ride because of the pink glasses.
21:55
[SPEAKER_02]: And so then I'm thinking that song a watermelon sugar high.
21:57
[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm having a blast, like I'm dancing, I'm having fun, whatever.
22:01
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, our alarms go off on our phones, or our watches, because at altitude, you don't necessarily get the signal to eat.
22:09
[SPEAKER_02]: So you have to time yourself to remind yourself to drink and eat, so you have energy for later on in the day.
22:14
[SPEAKER_02]: So the alarms go off, we take off our backpacks, we go to get snacks, and I bump my goggles.
22:21
[SPEAKER_02]: So I bump my goggles, so the pink goes away, and almost instantly I'm cold, miserable, freezing, and gray, because we're in a white-out snowstorm.
22:30
[SPEAKER_02]: But to me, it looks like a cotton candy machine with pink floating around, right?
22:34
[SPEAKER_02]: So I was having fun, and I look at my team and they could tell my energy shifted, right?
22:38
[SPEAKER_02]: Like something dropped on me, and like, what just happened to you?
22:42
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, what just happened to me?
22:44
[SPEAKER_02]: Have you seen like, what were climbing in?
22:46
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, why are we climbing?
22:48
[SPEAKER_02]: What's going on?
22:48
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, how long has this been going on?
22:50
[SPEAKER_02]: And my friends and my team are like, this has been going on for the last two hours.
22:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Where have you been?
22:56
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, I've been in a pink cotton candy land and I was having fun and now I'm not.
23:02
[SPEAKER_02]: And it was just amazing, like, your perspective changes your experience on every level of everything you're doing.
23:10
[SPEAKER_00]: But to envision yourself in a pink cotton candy land on the top of a mountain in freezing cold temperatures is tough.
23:20
[SPEAKER_00]: So how do you switch your mentality to really embrace that?
23:27
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, how did you do that?
23:28
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like it's own magic, it's its own power.
23:30
[SPEAKER_02]: For me, I'm always thinking like, if this is hard, what would make it easy?
23:35
[SPEAKER_02]: What would make it fun?
23:36
[SPEAKER_02]: because I think a lot of us, especially entrepreneurs, were committed to the goal.
23:40
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, we're gonna get to the top of the mountain.
23:43
[SPEAKER_02]: But if you already know that you're gonna get to the top of the mountain, now the challenge is, how do you make it fun and how do you bring people with you so that you all get to the top of the mountain, not just yourself.
23:54
[SPEAKER_02]: So anytime I find myself in a funk where I'm like pushing or like angry or unhappy, that's my time out.
24:02
[SPEAKER_02]: sign.
24:03
[SPEAKER_02]: And it's like, OK, wait, I can change this experience with my perspective.
24:07
[SPEAKER_02]: What perspective do I need to have to make this fun?
24:10
[SPEAKER_02]: And more times than not, it's going back to my childhood.
24:13
[SPEAKER_02]: Like we had to make these iglues on one of the mountains because of the tense ripped you'd be in trouble.
24:18
[SPEAKER_02]: So you'd set up a tent and then you'd cut out ice blocks to make an igloo.
24:22
[SPEAKER_02]: It was horrible, it's heavy, it's hard, it's cold, it's whatever, and then I thought to myself, if I was five, and my job was to make igloo's, I'd be in heaven, like that'd be the coolest thing ever.
24:33
[SPEAKER_02]: So I kind of tapped into my five-year-old, and I was like, I am an adult, and I get to be out here, making igloo's.
24:40
[SPEAKER_02]: Like how lucky is my life?
24:43
[SPEAKER_02]: That perspective changes your experience, which changes everything.
24:47
[SPEAKER_00]: So how can a normal person change perspective in a hardship situation?
24:51
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so for example, I built my business cold calling.
24:55
[SPEAKER_02]: I had a phone book, they were listed by like, how wealthy the neighborhood was and you just had to smile and dial.
25:02
[SPEAKER_02]: It is horrifying because the amount of times you get hung up on or sworn at or done whatever with, right?
25:09
[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm like, well, if this is what I need to do to build my book at business, I need to make this fun.
25:13
[SPEAKER_02]: So I bought one of those guns that you just have like a sponge ball that was tied to the gun by a string.
25:19
[SPEAKER_02]: So then I could shoot the gun to get rid of the anger to go play again, right?
25:24
[SPEAKER_02]: So anytime I got hung up on, I'd shoot the person, get my power back and call the next person.
25:30
[SPEAKER_02]: I made it fun.
25:31
[SPEAKER_02]: And we would have like a basketball hoop in there.
25:33
[SPEAKER_02]: So any single time that we got hung up on you throw the basketball to see if you made a basket.
25:37
[SPEAKER_02]: And then if you made a basket, it was just it was a way to break up the monotony of the task that isn't cool.
25:41
[SPEAKER_02]: And that's on you.
25:43
[SPEAKER_02]: Like what does that look like for you and everybody can make that fun?
25:47
[SPEAKER_00]: I like that because, candidly, I kind of still build my business on a phone book.
25:52
[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
25:53
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not the same exact phone book as a automation and technology, but I'm still generating leads.
25:59
[SPEAKER_00]: They're prospects to join the organization, but it's the same thing as when I started.
26:03
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I'm not interested, you know, I'm going to another company like, okay, fine, go to that.
26:07
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, so it's the same.
26:10
[SPEAKER_00]: I myself really just embrace rejection.
26:13
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it's just like, I love it.
26:15
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right.
26:16
[SPEAKER_00]: If you reject me, I like it.
26:18
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I would rather have you reject me than not.
26:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
26:21
[SPEAKER_02]: Because my thought is, I was like, okay, I need 97 people to reject me and then three people won't.
26:26
[SPEAKER_02]: And the three people that don't are going to invest with me and they're going to make up from the 97 people that didn't.
26:32
[SPEAKER_02]: So for me, it's just a numbers game.
26:33
[SPEAKER_02]: Give me through the numbers because eventually I'll win.
26:35
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
26:36
[SPEAKER_00]: And so, and that's, that's, I guess entrepreneurship in general, it's all just a numbers game.
26:42
[SPEAKER_00]: What's the reality with anybody who's successful now?
26:46
[SPEAKER_00]: I live in Newport Beach and the traditional model of success that our parents taught us.
26:52
[SPEAKER_00]: My parents specifically is go to school, then go to college, then go to med school, and then you'll be successful.
27:00
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, mom and dad, I don't have any doctor neighbors.
27:03
[SPEAKER_00]: There aren't none.
27:04
[SPEAKER_00]: A new poor beach.
27:05
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
27:06
[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's an entrepreneur because a doctor has a finite income of $2,300,000.
27:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
27:11
[SPEAKER_00]: They can't buy a $5 million.
27:14
[SPEAKER_00]: So what I'm telling my kids now, it's like, okay, you're going to go to med school.
27:19
[SPEAKER_00]: as a baseline and then you're going to start your business and it's going to be some sort of, you know, medical practice or some sort of whatever it is or you've been better product, but I'm in I'm encouraging them to embrace rejection now, definitely, and start their businesses now and kind of like,
27:36
[SPEAKER_00]: understand how to negotiate my son walked into an iPad store or a you break I fixed or on I told him like go in there tell how much to fix the iPad I want to like 200 bucks to fix I've had like he can't dead.
27:50
[SPEAKER_00]: They want 200 bucks I'm like go back in there and tell them to tell 100
27:53
[SPEAKER_00]: I think, and he looks at him like, no, I'm not going to give him 100 bucks.
27:57
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to do a $400.
27:58
[SPEAKER_00]: He embraced the rejection like, all right, we'll get a new iPad for $300.
28:01
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right, right, right.
28:03
[SPEAKER_00]: So the whole thing is though, he got rejected on his, I'm always showing them how to negotiate and embrace rejection.
28:11
[SPEAKER_00]: And they're rude now because once you're nine or ten, they're no longer like this is cute negotiating with me, you know, that they're like annoyed.
28:19
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like I had them negotiating at like five and people bit like they would succumb because it's like a five-year-old negotiating.
28:24
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
28:25
[SPEAKER_00]: That's like, oh, this is adorable.
28:26
[SPEAKER_00]: Now that, you know, you're ten, like they're, they're gonna be a jerk to you.
28:30
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
28:30
[SPEAKER_00]: He'd never experienced someone just being a total jerk to him while he's trying to negotiate.
28:34
[SPEAKER_01]: He're like, well, welcome to life soon.
28:36
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's how real negotiating is.
28:38
[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, they're gonna be a jerk.
28:39
[SPEAKER_00]: They're not gonna just think you're some cute kid.
28:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right, cuteness only goes so far.
28:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, only at a certain age, and then it's gone.
28:45
[SPEAKER_02]: No, I think teaching your kids like how to run businesses, like we, when my kids were younger, I homeschooled them, we did the whole chicken thing, right?
28:54
[SPEAKER_02]: So they had to buy chicken feet and then they get the chicken eggs and then sell the eggs to get the money, to buy the feed, to do the thing, and you know, learn all the things that you had to do with it, and I just think it's so fun because it's just, becomes part of the process.
29:08
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
29:08
[SPEAKER_02]: Instead of, it's about me, it's learning to separate from the two really helps.
29:13
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, you've had to go through a lot of grind to get to where you're at.
29:19
[SPEAKER_00]: You had to co-call, get rejected thousands of times, and you've really built a luxurious lifestyle for your kids.
29:28
[SPEAKER_00]: Your kids don't have to go through the suffering that you went through.
29:32
[SPEAKER_00]: Now,
29:33
[SPEAKER_00]: We always say, for entrepreneurs, the suffering is what's made us, we are, but you know, I want my kids to be better than me and as do you.
29:42
[SPEAKER_00]: So how are you instilling that same level of grit that you have, that same attitude that you have in your kids?
29:49
[SPEAKER_00]: And we kind of hinted at it a little bit, but how are you instilling that grit in your kids?
29:52
[SPEAKER_00]: How are you making sure that they're able to deal with suffering?
29:55
[SPEAKER_00]: How are you making sure that they're able to deal with that
29:57
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, one, you know, taking them out in the mountains.
30:00
[SPEAKER_00]: That's pretty cool.
30:01
[SPEAKER_02]: Where you have adversity and like this is what it looks like or whatever, but I'm also, I took my son Jack to real estate conference two weekends ago.
30:08
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not personally in the mine frame to invest in real estate right now, but he might be.
30:14
[SPEAKER_02]: And so I wanted him to see a different way that you can learn something instead of just traditional school because I don't know if school is really the best move for him.
30:21
[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm like, let's look at other things that interest you that you might be open to exploring in other ways you can learn than a normal college education.
30:29
[SPEAKER_02]: So I think a lot of it is just exploring with them so that they can see like, hey, I'm a beginner and you're a beginner where beginners together, but let's see what we can learn is if something that we're interested in and being able to walk away from it or not.
30:43
[SPEAKER_02]: Jack also had a business idea before that
30:50
[SPEAKER_02]: And it didn't go well.
30:53
[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't go baratum and get mad at him or whatever.
30:55
[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, okay, how do we harvest this loss?
30:59
[SPEAKER_02]: So then we sat and I was like, what did we learn from this?
31:02
[SPEAKER_02]: What do we know about ourselves going forward?
31:04
[SPEAKER_02]: How is this going to leverage us into the next version of who we need to become?
31:08
[SPEAKER_02]: But you need to sit down with them and not shame them or guilt them, but help them explore and evaluate those experiences so they can learn about themselves and continue to carry forward.
31:20
[SPEAKER_00]: I love that, you know, he took a much more mature approach.
31:24
[SPEAKER_00]: I started a business with my nine-year-old son.
31:26
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a slanging cards, selling cards, basketball cards, baseball cards, on what not, which is basically like a bunch of people streaming cards.
31:36
[SPEAKER_00]: And we sold our first card, okay, and it was a football autograph card.
31:41
[SPEAKER_00]: We sold it for $3, and he was so upset, he was like,
31:44
[SPEAKER_00]: All we got for that card was through does my bro, you're selling in an auction Okay, and there was only two people in the auction like whatever you start the auction at that's pretty much what you're gonna sell it at You started for $3 he was so upset he was so upset about Mike don't look at that.
31:59
[SPEAKER_00]: You made your first sale like You made a sale you you accomplished a goal of a sale like you know how long it takes an answer for new order make one sale You made your first sale at nine, you know, he wanted to give up.
32:11
[SPEAKER_00]: He's like this is too hard
32:13
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, you know, just like instilling that level of fear and anxiety in them young and having them embrace those challenges is so imperative and I'm always looking for ways to make them And brace challenges embrace adversity and do hard things because no one gets far doing easy things
32:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right.
32:33
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean you like that Mountain Kilimanjaro.
32:35
[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't think I could do it.
32:36
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I'll get you up there.
32:37
[SPEAKER_02]: Don't you worry.
32:38
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't feel like I can do it myself.
32:40
[SPEAKER_02]: Like so I don't know how I get them to do it, but yeah, I think it's just exposing them to different experiences too.
32:47
[SPEAKER_02]: So one of the things I've done with my kids is they're all scuba certified.
32:51
[SPEAKER_02]: And the cool thing about being scuba certified in your 12-year-olds.
32:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, because you can get it at 10.
32:56
[SPEAKER_02]: So when you are scuba certified, when you get in the water with the tank, the goal isn't to get to the boat as fast as possible.
33:05
[SPEAKER_02]: The goal is to see as much as possible.
33:08
[SPEAKER_02]: Right?
33:09
[SPEAKER_02]: Because if you get to the side and then you miss like the like CQ Comber or this fish or whatever else like that like that the whole point under there Underwater was to see all these different things.
33:18
[SPEAKER_02]: So I think when you're raising your kids Just exposing them to different experiences and different ways of winning versus Getting to the top of the mountain the fastest.
33:27
[SPEAKER_02]: It's who gets to see the most that wins And what did you see and what did you learn and all those different things?
33:33
[SPEAKER_02]: So not just having the experience but having the built-in reflection time of the experience
33:38
[SPEAKER_02]: So they get to integrate what they learn to carry forward.
33:42
[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
33:43
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, a couple last questions before you join.
33:45
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a three-prong question.
33:46
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, okay.
33:47
[SPEAKER_00]: What's a personal goal that you have for yourself, a family goal that you have for your family, and a goal that you have for your business?
33:54
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh man, big questions.
33:56
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so the goal that I have for my business, even though I'm in thought leadership, I'm hoping that I'm in a position in the near future, so the next three to five years, or I'm not the asset, right?
34:09
[SPEAKER_02]: So that's definitely something I'm working on, because right now I'm the asset, and I want it to not be the asset.
34:15
[SPEAKER_02]: Go on.
34:15
[SPEAKER_00]: I have that same goal.
34:16
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, perfect.
34:17
[SPEAKER_00]: Great.
34:18
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
34:18
[SPEAKER_00]: We're on that together.
34:19
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll hold each other accountable.
34:20
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
34:21
[SPEAKER_02]: Amen.
34:23
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, so we'll hold each other accountable.
34:24
[SPEAKER_02]: A goal for my family is, you know, I'm losing my first son to college this fall.
34:31
[SPEAKER_02]: So it's going to change our family dynamics because not everybody's going to be living under the same roof.
34:36
[SPEAKER_02]: So I have already got his hotel rooms for parents weekend.
34:40
[SPEAKER_02]: So all of us can go down there and see him and connect with him.
34:44
[SPEAKER_02]: And so I'm hoping, or as my goal for the family over the next few years, as I start losing kids to college, that we all still travel together to see each other in their new environments.
34:55
[SPEAKER_02]: So that's something I'm very serious about.
34:58
[SPEAKER_02]: And then a personal goal for me is getting these last two months done and getting this last world record and then allowing myself to sit with that for a little bit and not chase something because I love the chase.
35:10
[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
35:11
[SPEAKER_00]: I love that you love the chase and you're you're gonna climb these two mountains You're gonna figure something else out.
35:16
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, of course.
35:16
[SPEAKER_02]: I am, but I want to like, I know I'm gonna check that box.
35:19
[SPEAKER_02]: I know I Right, it's like I know I'm gonna figure something else out.
35:22
[SPEAKER_02]: So I want to be able to sit without doing something and still feel good You know that human doing and human being.
35:29
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm good at doing.
35:30
[SPEAKER_02]: I need to get better at being
35:32
[SPEAKER_00]: love it.
35:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Last question.
35:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because you're just an incredible servant, a huge heart.
35:39
[SPEAKER_00]: When you're in front of the pulley gates, what do you think God's gonna tell you?
35:43
[SPEAKER_02]: He's gonna say thank you.
35:45
[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for having the courage to do things I challenge you to do that didn't make sense.
35:51
[SPEAKER_02]: Because when I started climbing these mountains, I had never slept in a tent.
35:56
[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody looked at me like I was crazy.
35:57
[SPEAKER_02]: Like where are you coming up with this idea and why would you even pursue this?
36:00
[SPEAKER_02]: Like who climbs Everest with seven children at home?
36:03
[SPEAKER_02]: Like none of it made sense.
36:05
[SPEAKER_02]: But I knew I had that whole body, yes, and I just had the faith that if this was seed was planted in me, I'm supposed to grow it.
36:14
[SPEAKER_02]: And so I grew it and by chasing that goal, I got to meet so many amazing people, be a part of so many stories I would have never known.
36:22
[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm so grateful I had the courage to do that.
36:27
[SPEAKER_00]: amazing, amazing, amazing story.
36:29
[SPEAKER_00]: What an inspiration you are to millions of women.
36:34
[SPEAKER_00]: If people want to get in touch with you, how do they find you?
