- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio. You are listening to The Bible Explained with
- 0:13Speaker 1: Jen Koukl, a P40 Ministries podcast. Howdy, faithful listeners, and
- 0:18Speaker 1: welcome to The Bible Explained podcast on this absolutely lovely day. Man,
- 0:23Speaker 1: it has just been so gorgeous these past few days.
- 0:28Speaker 1: You know, the Leaves on the trees just look beautiful
- 0:32Speaker 1: near me. My sister actually sent me a picture of
- 0:36Speaker 1: how the trees look near her, and they're still green.
- 0:40Speaker 1: So I'd love to hear about your trees. Are they
- 0:42Speaker 1: nice and green still? Or do they have some beautiful
- 0:45Speaker 1: fall colors? You can let me know by emailing the
- 0:48Speaker 1: contact information in the description of this episode. Okay, let's
- 0:53Speaker 1: get into 2 Peter 2. This is going to be
- 0:56Speaker 1: a heavy topic. So you're going to really want your
- 0:58Speaker 1: hot beverage with you today, your delicious cup of coffee
- 1:01Speaker 1: or tea. So while you're refilling that, please listen to
- 1:05Speaker 1: an ad from one of my sponsors. All right, so
- 1:09Speaker 1: I'm not going to really give much of an introduction
- 1:11Speaker 1: into 2 Peter 2. You guys will see what it's
- 1:13Speaker 1: about right as we dive in. Let's read 2 Peter 2,
- 1:17Speaker 1: 1 through 11. I'll be reading as I usually do
- 1:20Speaker 1: from the World English Bible. But false prophets also rose
- 1:25Speaker 1: among the people, as false teachers will also be among you,
- 1:28Speaker 1: who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the
- 1:32Speaker 1: master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction. Many
- 1:37Speaker 1: will follow in their immoral ways, and as a result,
- 1:40Speaker 1: the way of the truth will be maligned. In covetousness,
- 1:43Speaker 1: they will exploit you with deceptive words, whose sentence now
- 1:47Speaker 1: from of old doesn't linger, and their destruction will not slumber.
- 1:51Speaker 1: For if God didn't spare the angels when they sinned,
- 1:53Speaker 1: but cast them down to Tartarus, and committed them to
- 1:56Speaker 1: pits of darkness to be reserved for judgment, and didn't
- 1:58Speaker 1: spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others,
- 2:02Speaker 1: a preacher of righteousness when he brought a flood on
- 2:04Speaker 1: the world of the ungodly, and turning the cities of
- 2:07Speaker 1: Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, having
- 2:11Speaker 1: made them an example to those who would live in
- 2:14Speaker 1: an ungodly way. And delivered righteous Lot, who was very
- 2:17Speaker 1: distressed by the lustful life of the wicked. For that
- 2:20Speaker 1: righteous man dwelling among them was tormented in his righteous
- 2:24Speaker 1: soul from day to day with seeing and hearing lawless deeds.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out
- 2:31Speaker 1: of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for
- 2:34Speaker 1: the day of judgment. In order to understand what we're
- 2:39Speaker 1: talking about today, We have to go back to the
- 2:41Speaker 1: previous chapter, 2 Peter 1, and read verses 19 through 21,
- 2:46Speaker 1: which flows perfectly into the first verse of our passage
- 2:50Speaker 1: for today. So here's what 2 Peter 1, 19 through
- 2:53Speaker 1: 21 says. We have the more sure word of prophecy,
- 2:57Speaker 1: and you do well that you heed it as to
- 2:59Speaker 1: a lamp shining in a dark place until the day
- 3:01Speaker 1: dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts, knowing
- 3:04Speaker 1: this first, that no prophecy of scripture is of private interpretation,
- 3:08Speaker 1: For no prophecy ever came by the will of man,
- 3:11Speaker 1: but holy men of God spoke, being moved by the
- 3:15Speaker 1: Holy Spirit. And that flows into 2 Peter 2 verse 1.
- 3:19Speaker 1: But false prophets also arose among the people, as false
- 3:23Speaker 1: teachers will also be among you. So yes, even though
- 3:27Speaker 1: the Old Testament scriptures, as we discussed on Tuesday, were
- 3:31Speaker 1: reliable sources of information about Jesus, because they talked about
- 3:36Speaker 1: everything Jesus was going to do thousands of years before
- 3:40Speaker 1: Jesus was even born. Accurately, I might add, there were
- 3:45Speaker 1: false prophets in those days as well that were prophesying
- 3:49Speaker 1: things that were untrue. And we can read about some
- 3:52Speaker 1: of those false prophets that are mentioned in the Old Testament.
- 3:55Speaker 1: The best examples I can give is, I think it's
- 3:59Speaker 1: the book of First Kings, where King Ahab, you know,
- 4:03Speaker 1: the real bad guy, that was the king of Israel,
- 4:06Speaker 1: had hundreds of false prophets prophesying to him. And the
- 4:10Speaker 1: king of Judah went up to visit King Ahab and
- 4:13Speaker 1: he was like, do you not have a single prophet
- 4:16Speaker 1: here that actually communes with Yahweh? And Ahab's like, well,
- 4:23Speaker 1: we do have one, but I hate the guy. I
- 4:25Speaker 1: can't stand him. He's in prison right now because he
- 4:28Speaker 1: always prophesies against me. But they ended up bringing that
- 4:31Speaker 1: prophet out to prophesy. And indeed, he prophesied against King Ahab,
- 4:37Speaker 1: but his prophecy was the only correct prophecy in a
- 4:41Speaker 1: sea of false prophets. And that poor prophet ended up
- 4:44Speaker 1: getting slapped in the face by these other false prophets
- 4:48Speaker 1: and maligned and mistreated and sent back to jail. Just
- 4:51Speaker 1: really nasty stuff. because there was one prophet willing to
- 4:55Speaker 1: stand up for the actual truth that God was speaking
- 4:58Speaker 1: to him, whereas all of these other prophets were only
- 5:00Speaker 1: in it for their own gain. We read about that
- 5:04Speaker 1: even in the Old Testament. And Peter says, just as
- 5:07Speaker 1: there are many false prophets among the people, while true
- 5:11Speaker 1: prophets were writing about Jesus. There are going to be
- 5:14Speaker 1: false teachers in the church today that come in pretending
- 5:19Speaker 1: to be worshipers of Jesus, but they secretly bring in
- 5:24Speaker 1: destructive heresies, is what Peter says right here, and deny
- 5:28Speaker 1: even the master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Sometimes the most dangerous theology and heresy is is wrapped
- 5:40Speaker 1: in a very pretty Christian bow. There are a lot
- 5:43Speaker 1: of people that come into the church claiming to be
- 5:46Speaker 1: Jesus followers, and yet they do some of the most
- 5:49Speaker 1: destructive things. They are called often wolves in sheep's clothing
- 5:54Speaker 1: because they disguise themselves as sheep, as something humble, as
- 5:59Speaker 1: something good, something that follows after Jesus. But inwardly, they
- 6:04Speaker 1: are wolves just waiting for their next meal, waiting to
- 6:07Speaker 1: devour whatever sheep comes into their vicinity. These wolves seem
- 6:13Speaker 1: really impressive. Just as Peter says right here, they're going
- 6:16Speaker 1: to be false teachers. So these are people claiming to
- 6:19Speaker 1: have some sort of authority, claiming to understand the scriptures
- 6:23Speaker 1: and have knowledge of Jesus, essentially. This is a big,
- 6:28Speaker 1: big problem in churches across the West today. Huge problem.
- 6:33Speaker 1: In fact, I would even argue that it's a systemic problem,
- 6:37Speaker 1: not just a one-off. Because when you set up a
- 6:40Speaker 1: hierarchy in the church, that sets your church up for failure.
- 6:45Speaker 1: So what should the churches look like? The churches should
- 6:48Speaker 1: be 100% elder run. That is what scripture lays out.
- 6:53Speaker 1: It's multiple elders that come together and make sure that
- 6:57Speaker 1: the church is safe. And they scour through the scriptures
- 7:00Speaker 1: to make sure that every avenue in the church is
- 7:03Speaker 1: following after scripture. And if one of the other elders
- 7:08Speaker 1: goes astray, the other men that are elders can either
- 7:12Speaker 1: dismiss him or help him see the error of his ways.
- 7:16Speaker 1: But if there's a head guy on top of it all,
- 7:19Speaker 1: who doesn't have any kind of accountability because everybody is
- 7:22Speaker 1: underneath him, you're going to have problems exactly like the
- 7:25Speaker 1: one that Peter talks about right here. where these teachers
- 7:29Speaker 1: are following in their own immoral ways. And as a result,
- 7:34Speaker 1: the way of the truth becomes maligned. In covetousness, they
- 7:39Speaker 1: exploit you with deceptive words whose sentence now from of
- 7:43Speaker 1: old doesn't linger and their destruction will not slumber. Now,
- 7:47Speaker 1: please don't get me wrong. I am not saying that
- 7:49Speaker 1: every single pastor is like this. I am sure that
- 7:52Speaker 1: there are some really good and humble pastors out there
- 7:56Speaker 1: that are doing their job effectively, even if they are
- 8:00Speaker 1: the head guy, even if they're the senior pastor. I
- 8:03Speaker 1: am sure there are a lot out there that do
- 8:05Speaker 1: not hurt the church and who are not a wolf
- 8:09Speaker 1: in sheep's clothing. Even in that case, that pastor still
- 8:14Speaker 1: has a higher tendency to fall into some kind of sin,
- 8:19Speaker 1: whether it be pride or narcissism or covetousness or any
- 8:25Speaker 1: other kind of sin, because he's kind of at the
- 8:28Speaker 1: top of everything. If he's not careful, he can fall
- 8:31Speaker 1: into these sins a lot faster, especially if he considers
- 8:36Speaker 1: himself above the elder board, which unfortunately is what happens
- 8:41Speaker 1: a lot of times with these church structures. Now, here's
- 8:45Speaker 1: what Jesus has to say about this topic. In Matthew 20,
- 8:49Speaker 1: verses 25 through 28, Jesus kind of talks about the
- 8:54Speaker 1: hierarchy that was very common for religious leaders in his day.
- 8:59Speaker 1: And he tells his disciples, this is not how it's
- 9:02Speaker 1: supposed to be with you. Matthew 20, 25 through 28.
- 9:08Speaker 1: But Jesus summoned them and said, you know that the
- 9:11Speaker 1: rulers of the nations lord it over them and their
- 9:13Speaker 1: great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be
- 9:17Speaker 1: so among you. but whoever desires to become great among
- 9:22Speaker 1: you shall be your servant. Whoever desires to be first
- 9:25Speaker 1: among you shall be your bondservant. Even as the son
- 9:28Speaker 1: of man came not to be served, but to serve
- 9:32Speaker 1: and to give his life as a ransom for many.
- 9:35Speaker 1: The church leaders are never supposed to lord it over anybody.
- 9:39Speaker 1: In fact, Jesus calls them, commands them to be different
- 9:43Speaker 1: from the leaders, whether they be a leader of the government.
- 9:50Speaker 1: The church was supposed to be something different. So the
- 9:54Speaker 1: elder who is to imitate Jesus is to become the
- 9:58Speaker 1: chief servant of everybody. That is why Jesus says right here,
- 10:03Speaker 1: whoever desires to be the first among you shall be
- 10:05Speaker 1: your bondservant, even as the son of man came not
- 10:07Speaker 1: to be served, but to serve and to give his
- 10:10Speaker 1: life as a ransom for many. Jesus did not come
- 10:13Speaker 1: tooting his own horn. Jesus came as a servant who
- 10:17Speaker 1: washed his disciples' feet. and who poured out his life,
- 10:21Speaker 1: his blood for each and every one of us. Jesus
- 10:26Speaker 1: was the ultimate servant. And that is how he commands
- 10:29Speaker 1: his disciples to be. They were to go out into
- 10:32Speaker 1: the world and start building the church, right? And yet
- 10:36Speaker 1: they were supposed to be servants of everybody. So the
- 10:39Speaker 1: hierarchy that we see in our churches today, I'm sorry,
- 10:42Speaker 1: but it is just not biblical. And it's not healthy,
- 10:46Speaker 1: both for the church congregants and also for the pastor himself.
- 10:51Speaker 1: So a healthy elder board is very, very important. And
- 10:54Speaker 1: unfortunately in America, you'll be hard pressed to find a
- 10:57Speaker 1: church with the type of elder board that scripture specifically
- 11:02Speaker 1: outlines for you. Now you might be like, well, Jen,
- 11:04Speaker 1: what do I do then? Do I just not go
- 11:06Speaker 1: to church? Well, no, it says in scripture that you're
- 11:09Speaker 1: not to forsake the assembling together. So the best thing
- 11:13Speaker 1: you can do is find a church that is the
- 11:15Speaker 1: most biblical in your area and attend it. and worship
- 11:18Speaker 1: there and pray for people. You never know what kind
- 11:21Speaker 1: of change you can implement in your church just by
- 11:26Speaker 1: showing up and worshiping wholeheartedly and praying. That is what
- 11:31Speaker 1: I believe we are called to do. Now, if we
- 11:33Speaker 1: have a pastor coming in that is kind of like
- 11:36Speaker 1: this one that Peter mentions right here, obviously we don't
- 11:39Speaker 1: bow the knee to that or watch other people get
- 11:41Speaker 1: hurt and just Sit there being like, well, the gospel
- 11:44Speaker 1: is being preached, so that's all that matters. No, that's
- 11:47Speaker 1: that's called complacency. We don't do that either. We have
- 11:49Speaker 1: to find a nice fine line of worshiping, but also
- 11:53Speaker 1: not closing our eyes to potentially dangerous things. That is
- 11:57Speaker 1: why Peter warns us that these false teachers are going
- 12:01Speaker 1: to come in. just as the false prophets were in
- 12:04Speaker 1: abundance in the Old Testament. And God was always telling
- 12:09Speaker 1: these false prophets, stop with your heresies and your lies
- 12:13Speaker 1: and your false prophecies. Stop it because you are leading
- 12:16Speaker 1: my people astray and they will be sentenced to a
- 12:20Speaker 1: destruction that will not slumber. That is what Peter says
- 12:22Speaker 1: right here in verse three. In covetousness, these false teachers,
- 12:27Speaker 1: just like the false prophets, will exploit you with deceptive words.
- 12:31Speaker 1: whose sentence now from of old doesn't linger and their
- 12:35Speaker 1: destruction will not slumber. For if God didn't spare angels
- 12:40Speaker 1: when they sinned, but cast them down to Tartarus and
- 12:43Speaker 1: committed them to pits of darkness to be reserved for
- 12:46Speaker 1: judgment and didn't spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah
- 12:50Speaker 1: with seven others, a preacher of righteousness. when he brought
- 12:53Speaker 1: a flood on the world of the ungodly and turned
- 12:56Speaker 1: the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them
- 12:59Speaker 1: to destruction, having made them an example to those who
- 13:01Speaker 1: would live in an ungodly way, and delivered righteous Lot,
- 13:05Speaker 1: who was distressed by the lustful life of the wicked.
- 13:08Speaker 1: For that righteous man dwelling among them was tormented in
- 13:11Speaker 1: his righteous soul from day to day with seeing and
- 13:14Speaker 1: hearing the lawless deeds. then the Lord knows how to
- 13:17Speaker 1: deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the
- 13:21Speaker 1: unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment. The angels
- 13:26Speaker 1: are powerful servants of God. However, even some of them fell,
- 13:31Speaker 1: even some of them sinned way back when, specifically during
- 13:36Speaker 1: the days of Noah. The fallen angels back in Genesis
- 13:40Speaker 1: chapter six were likely encouraging man to sin. So how
- 13:45Speaker 1: can we think that if we do the exact same
- 13:48Speaker 1: sins that the angels did, that God is going to
- 13:52Speaker 1: spare us? If these false teachers are coming in, slandering
- 13:57Speaker 1: God's name and putting stumbling blocks in front of people
- 14:01Speaker 1: and encouraging their congregants to engage in some sort of sin,
- 14:06Speaker 1: whether it be the sin of pride or doubt or idolatry,
- 14:11Speaker 1: because they're setting their minds to worship the wrong thing,
- 14:14Speaker 1: Can those false teachers really believe that God is going
- 14:17Speaker 1: to spare them just because they did things in God's name?
- 14:22Speaker 1: Absolutely not. Matthew chapter 7 talks about this very thing.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Verses 21 through 23. Jesus says, And those are often
- 14:39Speaker 1: considered to be the scariest verses for Christians. But this
- 14:41Speaker 1: is not talking about true Christians. This is talking about
- 15:02Speaker 1: false teachers who claim Christianity, who say, Lord, I did
- 15:07Speaker 1: so many things for you. I prophesied in your name.
- 15:11Speaker 1: I cast out demons in your name. God is not
- 15:14Speaker 1: going to spare these individuals, especially if he didn't spare
- 15:19Speaker 1: the angels who did the exact same thing. But who
- 15:23Speaker 1: is God going to spare? Peter mentions right here two
- 15:26Speaker 1: individuals that God spared while all this corruption was happening.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Noah and also Lot. These two men were the ones
- 15:37Speaker 1: who stood up for their faith, who did not go
- 15:41Speaker 1: along with the crowd in doing evil things. Noah, for example,
- 15:46Speaker 1: was considered to be the only righteous man left on
- 15:48Speaker 1: the earth. He was the only one. He did not
- 15:51Speaker 1: go along with the corruption that was happening during his age.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And this was the age when the fallen angels were sinning.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Noah did not go along with it. And another person
- 16:01Speaker 1: that didn't go along with it was Lot. Right before
- 16:05Speaker 1: God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, there was only one righteous
- 16:09Speaker 1: man living in that city, and it was Lot himself.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Because Lot saw the corruption every single day, and it
- 16:17Speaker 1: grieved his soul day after day to see what was
- 16:20Speaker 1: going on in that city. He was disgusted by it,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and he didn't go along with the crowd. It actually
- 16:27Speaker 1: says that he was tormented. in his righteous soul from
- 16:30Speaker 1: day to day with seeing and hearing all the lawless deeds.
- 16:34Speaker 1: These are the two people that God saved out of
- 16:37Speaker 1: this destruction, which shows a couple things. That these false teachers,
- 16:42Speaker 1: their dangerous theology spreads like cancer. And sometimes, not even
- 16:48Speaker 1: in just one church, but multiple, many, many churches. You know,
- 16:52Speaker 1: the best one I can think of right now is
- 16:54Speaker 1: the Prosperity Gospel. That is a false teaching straight from
- 16:58Speaker 1: the mouth of Satan, as we've talked about in the
- 17:00Speaker 1: book of Job, right? And yet it's everywhere. You probably
- 17:04Speaker 1: will not find a single mainstream church or mainstream contemporary
- 17:11Speaker 1: Christian song that doesn't talk about some aspect of the
- 17:15Speaker 1: prosperity gospel in it because of how much that theology
- 17:21Speaker 1: spread like cancer. We can't go along with it. We
- 17:24Speaker 1: got to be like Noah. We got to be like
- 17:27Speaker 1: Lot rejecting these kinds of things, not caving to peer pressure,
- 17:31Speaker 1: but being grieved over what is happening to our churches.
- 17:37Speaker 1: So no, we don't reject the church because Noah and
- 17:40Speaker 1: Lot both didn't reject their countrymen. Lot was verbally telling
- 17:44Speaker 1: his neighbors, please stop what you're doing. Stop this sin
- 17:50Speaker 1: that you are about to commit. This is not good
- 17:52Speaker 1: for you. And Noah right here, Peter calls him a,
- 17:56Speaker 1: preacher of righteousness in verse five, meaning that Noah was
- 18:00Speaker 1: going out and preaching righteous things to his fellow countrymen.
- 18:05Speaker 1: He was not caving, hiding his faith or going along
- 18:08Speaker 1: with the crowd. And God saved these two men out
- 18:11Speaker 1: of the judgment and destruction that he was going to
- 18:14Speaker 1: do on the world and on Sodom and Gomorrah. So
- 18:17Speaker 1: I think that's a lesson for all of us and
- 18:20Speaker 1: something we can really take away from this. You and
- 18:23Speaker 1: I as Christians are called to be Noah and Lot.
- 18:28Speaker 1: We are called to be people who lovingly explain sin
- 18:33Speaker 1: to people or explain the dangers of some of these
- 18:36Speaker 1: theologies that go against scripture. We are not called to
- 18:39Speaker 1: be doormats or to run away. And please, I'm not
- 18:42Speaker 1: trying to guilt anybody because sometimes church is just not
- 18:47Speaker 1: possible for whatever reason, maybe from sickness to maybe because
- 18:51Speaker 1: you truly can't find a healthy or a good church,
- 18:55Speaker 1: maybe because of any other kind of life problem that happens.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I am definitely not talking about those cases or passing
- 19:03Speaker 1: any judgments on that whatsoever. But when we can, we
- 19:06Speaker 1: should actively try to find time to not forsake assembling
- 19:11Speaker 1: with other believers, even if it's over dinner or just
- 19:15Speaker 1: a simple conversation or maybe a class that you do
- 19:18Speaker 1: together or even, just hanging out and playing games with
- 19:23Speaker 1: somebody or doing a simple Bible study, whatever it might be,
- 19:26Speaker 1: because it's good for you and it's good for them.
- 19:29Speaker 1: But on the flip side, if you see some poor
- 19:31Speaker 1: theologies popping up in your church and you're feeling a
- 19:36Speaker 1: conviction over them, I encourage you to pray about that
- 19:39Speaker 1: conviction and see where God wants you to take it.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Not necessarily speaking harshly with the pastor or with the
- 19:46Speaker 1: elders or with anybody else in your church, but really
- 19:50Speaker 1: mulling it over, really praying about it and seeing how
- 19:53Speaker 1: you can be most effective in that situation. And sometimes, honestly,
- 19:58Speaker 1: God just calls you out of a church and it
- 20:00Speaker 1: is time to go. So whatever situation you find yourself in,
- 20:05Speaker 1: pray about it. Ask God to help you. Ask God
- 20:08Speaker 1: to give you knowledge on an issue. And overall, just
- 20:12Speaker 1: stay in God's word so that you don't fall into
- 20:16Speaker 1: some of these destructive heresies that Peter talks about right here.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Faithful listeners, if you were encouraged or convicted by today's episode,
- 20:28Speaker 1: then good. That is what scripture is supposed to do.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Encourage and convict. And hopefully my personal anecdotes and speaking
- 20:37Speaker 1: does not take away from the conviction that scripture gives you,
- 20:41Speaker 1: especially when we're reading through really intense passages like 2
- 20:45Speaker 1: Peter 2. Faithful listeners, before I let you all go,
- 20:49Speaker 1: please listen to one last sponsored ad for today. All right,
- 20:54Speaker 1: faithful listeners, today was a heavy topic. Hopefully you all
- 20:58Speaker 1: are still with me. And if you are still with me,
- 21:01Speaker 1: share the podcast on your social media platforms. Tell people
- 21:04Speaker 1: that the Bible Explained podcast exists because word of mouth
- 21:07Speaker 1: is a good way to evangelize because we're talking about
