- 0:37Thanks for listening. Wednesday.
- 0:47Ash Wednesday. We start the Lenten season
- 0:51officially unofficially, though. We're starting today because I
- 0:55needed an extra Sunday to get our sermon series in.
- 1:00And for the next seven weeks, we're going to be talking about
- 1:04everybody's favorite topic sin, aren't you excited?
- 1:10Seven weeks on Sand but not just any sin.
- 1:13We're going to be talking about The seven deadly sins.
- 1:18And if you don't have them right at the top of your mind, you
- 1:21can't quite read all of them in the number seven up there.
- 1:24The seven deadly sins are Pride, Envy wrath sloth greed, lust and
- 1:32gluttony It's gotta be fun, isn't it?
- 1:35It's going to be fun. This is so we're happy to talk
- 1:39about these seven deadly sins. But where do these seven deadly
- 1:43sins? Where's this list of sins?
- 1:45Come from? Because you could spend the
- 1:48whole rest of the day, looking through your Bible, trying to
- 1:51find this exact list of sins, and you're not going to find it,
- 1:56you're not going to find any place in scripture where it says
- 1:59and the seven deadly sins are and get that whole list of
- 2:04Pride, Envy wrath, etc, etc, Instead they're they're the
- 2:10result of thoughtful Christian reflection over time
- 2:15specifically by people like the desert fathers who like one name
- 2:23among them. Remember this?
- 2:25All you down in front, write it down.
- 2:27Evagrius the vagaries. He was a desert.
- 2:30Father, you won't remember any of this.
- 2:32All right? He was a desert father back in
- 2:35the 4th century and these desert.
- 2:38There is got their names because they all moved out into the
- 2:41Wilderness. They moved out into the desert
- 2:43because everywhere, they looked around them.
- 2:46In society, they said the world is so sinful.
- 2:49And corrupt, how can we follow Jesus in a world that lives?
- 2:55Like hell, right? How can we follow Jesus in a
- 3:01world? That's so corrupted.
- 3:03So the only answer for them was we've got to get away from the
- 3:07world. well, we've got to get away from society and so they
- 3:12moved from the cities, and the towns out into the Wilderness,
- 3:15into the desert, they built huts and monasteries out there and it
- 3:21wasn't long before they realize that moving away from society,
- 3:26they had not moved away from sin because the sin wasn't just
- 3:32found in the society and the culture, and the cities that
- 3:35they lived in the Sin was As in them, it was in their hearts.
- 3:43They couldn't get away from it. And so they started trying to
- 3:46figure out what to do about it. How to live, like, God was
- 3:51calling them to and eventually by about the 6th Century Pope
- 3:54Gregory kind of standardize the list and brought it all
- 3:58together, but but what makes these seven sins in particular,
- 4:03what makes them deadly sins. What makes them deadly or
- 4:09Mortal? Is the sense in which they lead
- 4:12us, spiritually to death. Now, they might not seem as
- 4:18serious as some other sins that we might think about, right?
- 4:23We don't really tend to think that anger, is really quite as
- 4:28bad as murdering someone, right? We don't think that lust is, as
- 4:36bad as Sleeping with someone else's husband or wife.
- 4:43We might know that greed is wrong but we don't think it's as
- 4:47bad as actually breaking into someone's house or store and
- 4:51stealing the things we want. But the reality is these sins,
- 4:58these seven are matters of the heart, not matters of behavior.
- 5:05It's the idea that these are kind of the chief sins.
- 5:09The sins that lead us to all these other sins.
- 5:13These are the sins that name the sinful.
- 5:16Orientations of our hearts, not just a momentary stumbling, not
- 5:22just a behavior that we're stuck in or a one-time action.
- 5:28But the direction our heart is headed.
- 5:31And when Jesus preached The Sermon on the Mount in Matthew
- 5:35chapters 5 through 7, which is where we're going to spend most
- 5:39of our time during this Lenten season.
- 5:43We're going to hear over and over again.
- 5:45Jesus is going to say you heard it said by Moses, right?
- 5:49And in the law and the Ten Commandments, don't kill,
- 5:52people. Don't murder people.
- 5:55But I'm telling you and he goes on to explain.
- 5:57Plain how it's not just the actual actions that matter.
- 6:02It's what's in your heart. So that's what we're going to
- 6:07look at. And that's why we're going to
- 6:09take the next almost two months to study these seven deadly
- 6:15sins. Because they're not just the
- 6:19sins that are out there in the world.
- 6:23They're our sins or the sins that are in US.
- 6:30Gotta cross my fingers and go out on a Ledge and say, most of
- 6:35us here, probably haven't thought about murdering anybody
- 6:39this week. How many of you were getting
- 6:45ready this morning? And your kid did something or
- 6:50your spouse did something. You got angry?
- 6:59These seven deadly sins. They show us ourselves because
- 7:06while we can try really hard and we can buckle down and we can
- 7:11generally control our Behavior, right?
- 7:15The things that we do, we can control that if we try hard
- 7:19enough, we fleas enough willpower.
- 7:24But who can control their heart. Who can control the things that
- 7:28are going on inside of them. So these seven deadly sins.
- 7:34They show us where we still need God's help God's grace and his
- 7:41Mercy. Because he sins like Austin.
- 7:46Say they separate us from God and ultimately, they separate us
- 7:51from one another. And God wants to do something
- 7:55about these sins to move us from death to New Life, to change us,
- 8:03and raise us into that new life. That was made possible by his
- 8:07death and Resurrection. We've got to recognize these
- 8:12sins when they're active in our lives and we've got to confess
- 8:15them and repent of them and turn away from them.
- 8:21There's a quote that's come up at least four times in the last
- 8:26week for me and things. I've been listening to things,
- 8:30have been reading emails. I've gotten at least four times
- 8:33this week, and here's this quotes from aw, tozier Who was
- 8:38the Founder of the Christian and Missionary Alliance
- 8:42denomination. And tozier said this, what we
- 8:47think about when we think about God is the most important thing
- 8:55about us, I one more time, what we think about when we think
- 9:02about God is the most important thing about us, Because what we
- 9:10think about when we think about God shapes, everything we do and
- 9:15it shapes how we see everything around us and so it's true too.
- 9:22When we think about God, and how he responds to sin And so when
- 9:29we think about God, do we envision God sitting up there on
- 9:35his throne, which is probably far more beautiful than this
- 9:40little chair. But do we see him sitting up
- 9:42there on his throne, just waiting to crack the whip at us
- 9:48when we step out of line, when we make a mistake, when we make
- 9:52a bad choice, or when we think about God and the sin in our
- 10:00lives, do we think about God who gives himself and gave him self
- 10:07to work for our freedom and our transformation, Because it
- 10:13changes what we think about Sin and changes, what we think
- 10:18about, how we respond to the work that God is doing in our
- 10:22lives. So that's a little bit about why
- 10:25we're going to be spending these next seven weeks looking at
- 10:28these seven deadly sins, because there are our sin So today we're
- 10:39going to start off, we're going to be talking about Envy.
- 10:46Envy, which we often think about as jealousy, or greed, or
- 10:51covetousness, but it isn't quite the same as any one of those.
- 10:57He cnv isn't just Desiring what someone else has.
- 11:03All right? That's coveting.
- 11:04That's that's one of the big 10, right?
- 11:06Thou shalt not covet. All these things.
- 11:11But it's also not just wanting more good things.
- 11:17That we call that greed Envy isn't quite the same as greed,
- 11:21but it's not. It's also not just holding on
- 11:24tightly to the things that we love because we're afraid we're
- 11:28going to lose them. That's what jealousy is, or at
- 11:32least what we've classically called jealousy.
- 11:37Cnv is thinking that you deserve, what someone else has
- 11:45more than they do. Envy is thinking you deserve
- 11:50what someone else has more than they do.
- 11:55And these about finding our worth in comparison with other
- 12:00people. Finding our status and where we
- 12:04belong in relation to the others around us.
- 12:09And ultimately tearing down those other people who have the
- 12:14things that we want, according to Saint Augustine's prayer
- 12:19book, which is a book of prayer and practice, with disciplines,
- 12:23and habits and patterns for building a strong Christian,
- 12:28spiritual life. They say that Envy can show
- 12:33itself in the following way. So, listen to this list, I think
- 12:39it's going to be a little more extensive than than we imagined.
- 12:42But listen to this list and think about how you've seen
- 12:46these things. Play out either in your life.
- 12:50Or in the life of others around you and we can show itself in
- 12:54the following ways. Feeling offended at the talents
- 12:59successes or Good Fortune of others selfish or unnecessary
- 13:04rivalry and competition. Pleasure another's,
- 13:09difficulties, or distress. Ill will for someone reading
- 13:15false motives into other people's behavior belittling
- 13:20others. False accusations backbiting
- 13:23slander, the initiation collection or retelling of
- 13:27Gossip arousing, fostering or organizing antagonism against
- 13:32other people. Scorn of someone else's
- 13:36abilities or failures teasing or bullying ridicule of persons
- 13:41institutions or ideals and prejudice against those.
- 13:46We consider inferior who consider us inferior or who
- 13:51seemed to threaten our security or position.
- 13:57That's Envy. That's how Envy can show itself.
- 14:04Not a lot of good in it, right. At least, when we look at some
- 14:08of the other seven deadly sins, we could say, well, at least
- 14:11gluttony starts off with some pleasure.
- 14:18Not. So with Envy.
- 14:21Envy tends to be the one. Deadly sin.
- 14:25People don't really want to confess.
- 14:29Because to admit that we are envious of.
- 14:32Someone means that in some way, we feel inferior to that person.
- 14:40We don't really like to talk about Envy.
- 14:43But we see it everywhere in our culture, our society, our
- 14:48culture is based on competitive comparison, we find are worth
- 14:54and the worth of others, only in measuring them in relation to
- 14:58each other. It's in all of our advertising,
- 15:02our whole advertising system is built on Envy, right?
- 15:06You see a commercial for our car, your life will be just
- 15:10perfect. If you buy our car, you'll have
- 15:15all the right status. If you just buy our products,
- 15:21you'll be worth it. If you buy what we're selling,
- 15:29but more often, Than kind of the Envy that's out there we
- 15:36experienced Envy as a close sin. In the workplace, or with our
- 15:44neighbors, even our families. We don't really Envy the people
- 15:49who are way out Beyond us, right?
- 15:52None of us really imagine. We're going to wake up one day
- 15:55and be the Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos, or somebody like that
- 15:59who's multi-billion dollar, we may have dreams while we're
- 16:03sleeping about all that. But it's really kind of out of
- 16:07reach for us. So we don't really Envy those
- 16:11people. We Envy those who are within
- 16:13reach those who are just ahead of us.
- 16:18The neighbor who rolls into the driveway with a new Lexus or BMW
- 16:24the sister or brother, whose house is just a little bit
- 16:27bigger or in just a little bit nicer of a neighborhood.
- 16:32The co-worker who gets promoted ahead, Of us.
- 16:39This is where we most often experience, Envy, it's close.
- 16:46And so if this is some of how we see Envy in the world around us,
- 16:51What does Jesus have to say to us today?
- 16:55About Envy? Even if we don't find it in the
- 16:59list in the Bible, that doesn't mean it's not in there.
- 17:05And Jesus tells us. That sin of envy.
- 17:10It's not just out there in the world.
- 17:13It's in us and he tells the story of these workers and the
- 17:19vineyard and the landowner. Jeremy red Forest.
- 17:25I just wanna walk through it for a minute.
- 17:29Jesus is telling his disciples and the crowds that are
- 17:33gathered. He's just been teaching them,
- 17:35you know, the whole bit about the little children, let them
- 17:38come to me. The Rich, Young Ruler who says,
- 17:42how can I get into heaven? And God says, or Jesus says,
- 17:45will keep the Commandments. He said, I'm doing that.
- 17:49Jesus, will sell everything you have and give away the money to
- 17:53the poor. Then you can enter into the
- 17:56kingdom of heaven. And then we get to this story.
- 18:02It says the Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain landowner.
- 18:06And this certain landowner, he's got a Vineyard and he wants
- 18:09people to come and work in his Vineyard till he goes into the
- 18:13Town Square where the people were looking for work.
- 18:16Would hang out and he looks and he sees some people, so he goes
- 18:22up to him. He says all right.
- 18:23I will give you one Denarius. Anybody know what a Denarius is
- 18:29as an old coin, that's what it means but it was equivalent to
- 18:33one day's wage a living. Wait, he's I will pay you one
- 18:39day's wage if you'll come and work.
- 18:41One day's work in my Vineyard. And so these guys say okay, we
- 18:47agree to that will do that, no problem. so they go and they
- 18:52start working the the landowner he goes back 9:00 Says, oh
- 19:00there's still some people here. Let me hire them too.
- 19:04So I'll pay you. What's right?
- 19:05If you go and work from now until the end of the day and
- 19:08goes back at noon and he goes back at 3 and he does the same
- 19:11thing. He goes back at 5:00 the end of
- 19:14the workday and there are still some people hanging out there.
- 19:18Why, why were they hanging out there?
- 19:22Why were they waiting? Because they didn't have any
- 19:27work to do and they knew that if no one came and hired them for
- 19:33that day, they had nothing to take home to their family that
- 19:38night. And so they waited and they
- 19:41hoped and they're still there and the landowner comes and
- 19:44says, why are you still here? They tell what nobody hired us.
- 19:52So he says, well you go and you work in my Vineyard to doesn't
- 19:56promise them. Anything doesn't tell him what
- 19:58he's going to pay them. And so they go and when the end
- 20:02of the day came, he said to his Foreman go and pay call them all
- 20:07in, from, from The Vineyard, pay them for the work.
- 20:10They've done this day, starting with the ones, we just hired
- 20:14last, and working your way to those who we started earlier.
- 20:19Pay them each a Denarius. So the the foreman calls all the
- 20:24people in, they start to line up to get their pay and he starts
- 20:29with the ones who had only been there an hour, he puts a
- 20:32Denarius in their hand. And he keeps going and I'm sure
- 20:38those men who had only worked for an hour.
- 20:42We're shocked and humbled and grateful for what they were
- 20:47given that day because now they had something to take home to
- 20:52their families. Meanwhile, you've got at the end
- 20:57of the line, those who have been working all day long and they're
- 21:01watching, what's happening? They see the Denarius going into
- 21:05each hand. These ones would only worked an
- 21:07hour. You can almost imagine.
- 21:11They're think alright well these guys are getting one Denarius
- 21:17for working an hour. Imagine what this guy is going
- 21:21to give to us, who have been working here all day long.
- 21:25All through the heat of the day, And the foreman keeps coming,
- 21:31and it's a Denarius in each hand.
- 21:34Till he gets to those who are hired first and they get the
- 21:38that same Denarius in their hand.
- 21:46I can almost imagine, it's okay to read scripture with your
- 21:50imagination, go especially when it's Jesus.
- 21:53Telling a story. I can just imagine though these
- 21:59early workers looking at each other, What gives?
- 22:07They got paid the same amount that we did.
- 22:11We've been here all day We've been here through the Heat and
- 22:18the Sun and all of it. So the land owner, hears them
- 22:24grumble. What's the matter guys?
- 22:28What's going on? I'm not being unfair to you.
- 22:33Friends. Didn't you agree to work for a
- 22:37Denarius? They didn't get less than what
- 22:40they had been promised. Just take your pay and go.
- 22:44I want to give the one who has hired last the same as I gave
- 22:49you. Don't I have the right to do
- 22:52what I want with my own money. Here's the key sentence.
- 22:58Or are you envious? Because I am generous.
- 23:05Are you envious? Because of my generosity.
- 23:10See, Jesus is telling the people how in our hearts we believe
- 23:15that the the amount of time we've served or how, well, we've
- 23:20served should be reflected in the rewards that we receive in
- 23:24life. And how well we followed God
- 23:28should mean that we get certain blessings.
- 23:33She's saying no, that's not how it works.
- 23:39Are you going to begrudge? God has generous generosity?
- 23:43Are you going to begrudge God giving a gift to someone else?
- 23:47Just because he worked in your life differently.
- 23:53But this isn't the only place Jesus talked about Envy.
- 23:59About he talked in The Sermon on the Mount about how we want to
- 24:04tear other people down and bring everyone to the same common
- 24:09level rather than rejoicing. In the good things that God is
- 24:12doing in their life, are dealing with the sin in our own life.
- 24:17In Matthew chapter 7, beginning in verse 3, Jesus said, why do
- 24:23you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no
- 24:28attention to the plank? Ink in your own eye.
- 24:32How can you say to your brother? Let me take the speck out of
- 24:35your eye. When all the time, there is a
- 24:37plank in your own eye. You hypocrite first, take the
- 24:42plank out of your own eye and then you will see clearly to
- 24:47remove the speck from your other from your brother's eye.
- 24:54We're so quick to point out the sin or the failing in another
- 25:01person. We're so quick to try to point
- 25:04at anything. We can to bring someone else
- 25:07down, because we think it's the only way that we can lift our
- 25:11self up. Because Envy says, we only have
- 25:20worth, we can only find our value in comparison to the
- 25:24people around us. so if this is the problem, Of Envy in our
- 25:32hearts. Doesn't sound like there's a
- 25:36whole lot of Hope. How do we work to deal with the
- 25:41Envy? That's in our own hearts?
- 25:45That's not quite the right question though because we can
- 25:48never deal with the sin in our own heart.
- 25:51So a better question we should ask is how do we work with Jesus
- 25:58to deal with the Envy in our hearts because it's only Jesus.
- 26:03It's only God who can deal with the sin in our hearts.
- 26:08So, I want to give you a few ways that I think we can
- 26:11cooperate with the grace of God and our lives to fight against
- 26:18Envy. First of all, we must find our
- 26:24worth in Christ and Christ Alone in the love that God has shown
- 26:32for us in the love that God has for us.
- 26:35The love that says that while we were still sinners Christ died
- 26:39for us, We've Been Loved with an everlasting love.
- 26:46John says how great is the love? That was lavished on us that we
- 26:51should be called the Sons and Daughters of God, we are loved
- 26:57by God. And until we can find are worth
- 27:03their until we can find our value there.
- 27:11We're always going to struggle with Envy.
- 27:13We're always going to struggle with comparison.
- 27:18We've got to find our worth in Christ.
- 27:25But I think we also need to choose gratitude for what God is
- 27:31doing. Not just in our own lives, but
- 27:34in the lives of others, it's been interesting to me this
- 27:40week, to watch the response of people on Twitter and different
- 27:45places to The Awakening that's been happening down as Barry and
- 27:49has spread to some other colleges, some people are
- 27:54rejoicing there. So So excited about what God is
- 27:58doing there, even though they're they're distant from that place,
- 28:03even though they're not involved in that place, they might not
- 28:06even be in the same movement or tradition as Asbury, but they're
- 28:10excited about what God is doing. But there are others. there are
- 28:19others who look at what's happening there and they try to
- 28:23cast doubt that this is a move of God, they questioned the
- 28:28authenticity of whether this is God working or it's just people
- 28:32trying to drum up people's emotions and enthusiasm Because
- 28:43God isn't working in the way they expect God to work or
- 28:48they're envious. That God is working there, but
- 28:51he's not working here in my church, that way.
- 28:59Friends, we've got to be grateful for what God is doing
- 29:05everywhere. Not just in our lives, but in
- 29:07the lives of others. And third thing, last thing, I
- 29:12think we need to seek opportunities to show kindness.
- 29:17That gets no recognition. We need to intentionally choose
- 29:22to practice, not envy. Because if Envy looks at people
- 29:27and says, I want What they have? Kindness looks at people and
- 29:34says, I want to do good for that person.
- 29:42It's love right there. Both fruit of the spirit love
- 29:45joy, peace, patience. Kindness we need to seek for
- 29:49opportunities where we can do kind things for people that may
- 29:53not ever get recognized. They may not ever get
- 29:56appreciated. But it turns our heart out from
- 30:02ourselves and toward other people.
- 30:05So it may be handing a dollar bill.
- 30:09To the guy panhandling in the middle of the street.
- 30:14It may be offering a cup of water to the construction
- 30:18workers, who are outside your door working on the power lines
- 30:21or whatever. Just looking for opportunities
