- 0:02[music]
- 0:08SPEAKER_01: son, pay attention to my words.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: Bend your ear to my speech.
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: Don't let them slip from your sight.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: Guard them with your mind.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: They are life to those who find them and healing for their entire body.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: More than anything you guard, protect your mind, for life flows from it.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Have nothing to do with a corrupt mouth.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Keep devious lips far from you.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Focus your eyes straight ahead and keep your gaze on what is in front of you.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: Watch your feet on the way and all your paths will be secure.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Don't deviate a bit to the right or the left.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Turn your feet away from evil.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: My life is busy and chaotic.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Even in the summer when theoretically life is supposed to slow down
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: a bit Everything feels a bit fraught and just slightly out of control.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: My decent and in order side of my heart is trying to learn how to embrace
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: the chaos instead of trying to control it,
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: knowing that the years when life feels this way are vanishing short,
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: if exhausting in the midst of it.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: For a lot of years,
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: I've attempted to manage the chaos by implementing various systems which claim to be
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: the final fix for the stress and anxiety of raising young children.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: I once created,
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: printed, cut,
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: and laminated 100 choice chore cards,
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: which hung from our refrigerator by metal magnetic clips.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Then the kids, just the two at the time, were allowed to choose their five chores for the week.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: Each chore was weighted with a different value,
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: and they had to choose at least one of each number.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: When they completed the chore, they earned tickets, which went into their assigned jar.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Labeled with a cute picture of them in their name.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: When the jar was full,
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: they got to go and pick out a toy from the store or get a special treat for dessert.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: It wasn't a genius system sold to me by a YouTuber who was bragging
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: about how it had changed her family life.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: It worked for about a month.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Unlike that YouTuber, I worked full-time and my husband worked full-time.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: We had an infant and two dogs,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: two cats, chickens, three fish, and two kids in activities every night of the week.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: My husband had just started his teaching career and was going to grad school at
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: the same time as he was creating his lesson plans.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: And managing this system turned out to be, on its own, a full-time job.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: All of which we would have dealt with had the system worked.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: But it didn't.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: The colorful cards,
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: the tickets,
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: the fun prizes might have been motivating enough had either of the parents had
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: the energy to follow through.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: But it didn't.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Because the kids just didn't like doing chores and waiting until the jar filled up
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: for what seemed, to them, a minor treat at the end wasn't worth the effort.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: The system collapsed on itself.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: And that's because behavior modification doesn't happen through external systems.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: You can't change the outward expression of a problem by creating colorful flashcards
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: and giving yourself tickets.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: If you could, New Year's resolutions would work a lot better than they do.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: Change of behavior comes from changes of the heart.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Lasting,
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: meaningful improvements don't come from getting a gym membership
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: or buying better shoes or setting up the tools in your workshop.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: If you want to do something different, Make a new and varied step for your future.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: It starts from the inside first.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: You have to want to change for a good and lasting reason.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: That's why heart attacks are often the reason people go to the gym.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: That's why hearing of a friend's struggle with cancer often does get people to quit smoking.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: That's why weight loss happens after the test results come back.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Our behavior changes when our heart does.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: When was the last time you made a major change in your life?
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: What motivated you to successfully make the change?
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: And what lessons could you learn from that change to make the next big step towards your future?
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Join me in prayer.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: Moving God.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: Sometimes in life we feel out of control and want to make a change.
