- 0:02Speaker 1: College football with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 0:05Speaker 2: And of course, everyone knows the exact right time to
- 0:08Speaker 2: start a college football show is week four of the
- 0:11Speaker 2: college football season.
- 0:12Speaker 1: There's T-Bob again. That's right. Special guests. Glad to be back, guys.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Love coming to hang out with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 0:19Speaker 3: College football.
- 0:20Speaker 4: Mario Cristobal, head coach at the University of Miami. Thank
- 0:24Speaker 4: you for joining us.
- 0:24Speaker 3: I just, I don't find any value in.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Humans, like, just spewing.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Diarrhea out of their mouth. With Stu Gotts.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I can give a rat's fat ass about what he
- 0:33Speaker 1: says or does.
- 0:34Speaker 3: And the bear.
- 0:35Speaker 5: The f * * *. Bear is awesome.
- 0:37Speaker 3: You're listening to College Football with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 0:41Speaker 2: It is the College Football Show with Stu Gatz and
- 0:44Speaker 2: the Bear. Bear proudly wearing his UM shirt today, the
- 0:47Speaker 2: number one team in the country.
- 0:49Speaker 1: He's a homer. T-Bob is with us again. That's exactly
- 0:52Speaker 1: why I don't wear the damn thing.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I knew I was going to get accused of being
- 0:56Speaker 3: a homer.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Well, you are a homer.
- 0:58Speaker 2: T-Bob, our special guest who's with us every week, joins
- 1:01Speaker 2: us as.
- 1:02Speaker 1: We come out. Glad to be back, guys.
- 1:04Speaker 2: As we come out of week eight. Of the college
- 1:07Speaker 2: football season. Man, T-Bob, this season, we always say we
- 1:10Speaker 2: can't wait for it. We can't wait for it. We
- 1:12Speaker 2: can't wait for it. We're waiting around. This and the NFL.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Then it gets here, and it flies by quickly, man.
- 1:18Speaker 2: We are done with eight weeks of college football.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Incredible. Yeah. Yeah, it's you know what, though, actually, instead
- 1:26Speaker 1: of engaging in the dread of the looming offseason, let's
- 1:29Speaker 1: focus on what we should focus on all the time,
- 1:31Speaker 1: which is being present. OK, and let's enjoy the rest
- 1:35Speaker 1: of this ride. And it's kind of it's kind of
- 1:37Speaker 1: a great place to start here, Stu, because. In my opinion,
- 1:44Speaker 1: this has been a very enjoyable ride thus far. This
- 1:48Speaker 1: new age of college football where we have this increased parity, right?
- 1:52Speaker 1: We have the talent flattening. It seems like anybody can
- 1:55Speaker 1: lose to anyone on any given day. I mean, go
- 1:58Speaker 1: look at the Big Ten and the SEC standings out
- 2:00Speaker 1: right now, guys. It's insane. I mean, hell, you look
- 2:03Speaker 1: at the Big Ten, I think Minnesota's in fourth right now. Yeah.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Shout out P.J. Fleck, row the boat. Yeah. I would
- 2:09Speaker 1: say this. For years in college football, we've done this
- 2:11Speaker 1: reductive thing. Where as soon as the team loses, we
- 2:15Speaker 1: just call them bad. And I see too many people
- 2:17Speaker 1: doing that right now. I think it's ridiculous. I think
- 2:20Speaker 1: you can lose games and be good. We have to
- 2:21Speaker 1: adjust our mindset with college football. My question to y'all
- 2:25Speaker 1: would be, do you like where college football is at
- 2:29Speaker 1: as a whole here in 2026?
- 2:30Speaker 3: As a whole?
- 2:35Speaker 1: No. Well, yes, yes, yes. All the warts and everything, right?
- 2:38Speaker 1: Because all the warts that you may hate are producing
- 2:41Speaker 1: the results that you love on Saturday, unless you don't
- 2:44Speaker 1: love these results.
- 2:45Speaker 3: I think as a whole, there's certainly, I mean, there
- 2:48Speaker 3: always are things that you can improve upon and fix
- 2:52Speaker 3: and make it better. But I, I mean, I think
- 2:58Speaker 3: what we've seen the last few, even look last three weeks,
- 3:00Speaker 3: you've had AP number one or number two, go down.
- 3:03Speaker 3: To an unranked team, you've got... a bunch of uncertainty
- 3:08Speaker 3: now atop the SEC. Like, you know, I don't even... Like,
- 3:12Speaker 3: who's Big Ten number three? Who's SEC number three? Like,
- 3:18Speaker 3: the Big 12, who's ECC number two? I think outside
- 3:22Speaker 3: of the top teams in the league, we really don't
- 3:24Speaker 3: know much. Yeah, I mean, the product, the games, the results,
- 3:28Speaker 3: I kind of like it. The whole process of how
- 3:31Speaker 3: we're getting here, I think could be improved. But yeah, I...
- 3:35Speaker 3: The game, all the shit that's happening off the field
- 3:40Speaker 3: can turn you all upset about it. But the product
- 3:43Speaker 3: on the field and the games themselves have been freaking great.
- 3:45Speaker 2: You're essentially asking, T-Bob, if we like parity. And, of course, yes,
- 3:49Speaker 2: there are more good teams, more teams that have a
- 3:51Speaker 2: chance to make the playoffs, I think, than ever before.
- 3:54Speaker 2: And who wouldn't be a fan of that because we're
- 3:56Speaker 2: so used to it being, you know, five to ten
- 3:59Speaker 2: programs who have a legitimate shot. at making it deep,
- 4:02Speaker 2: making a deep run, going to a national championship, winning
- 4:05Speaker 2: a national championship. And now it feels like it's more
- 4:08Speaker 2: wide open than ever. And the regular season, which to
- 4:11Speaker 2: me is really what makes college football special, they had
- 4:15Speaker 2: and they still have the best regular season because these
- 4:19Speaker 2: games at a 12-team playoff are still relevant enough. The
- 4:22Speaker 2: regular season is still relevant enough where I am watching it.
- 4:26Speaker 2: But yes, of course, Who doesn't love the idea of
- 4:29Speaker 2: Kentucky suddenly, out of nowhere, having a chance to make
- 4:32Speaker 2: a run and a deep run in a playoff?
- 4:35Speaker 3: Where's Rachel? Is Rachel excited about Northwestern maybe making the playoffs?
- 4:41Speaker 1: I mean, look at Northwestern out there. I did not
- 4:45Speaker 1: ask this question in good faith, to be clear. I
- 4:48Speaker 1: have an agenda here. And it's not about the 2014 playoff, Bear,
- 4:54Speaker 1: so relax. Although I do push back against the notion
- 4:56Speaker 1: that the regular season is not going to matter. I
- 4:57Speaker 1: think we'll find that it matters in ways you don't expect.
- 4:59Speaker 1: But every single Saturday, if I turn on college game
- 5:05Speaker 1: day I have to listen to what feels like a
- 5:09Speaker 1: super PACs political message about this protect college sports act.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I mean, these guys are shoving it down my fucking throat.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And yet I sit there and I watch the games
- 5:20Speaker 1: and I'm like, I think I like this. I don't
- 5:22Speaker 1: know if I think that college sports needs to be protected.
- 5:25Speaker 1: And yet every Saturday they sit there and tell me
- 5:27Speaker 1: they know better than me. And lo and behold, and
- 5:29Speaker 1: I love Coach Saban. I got nothing but respect for
- 5:31Speaker 1: Coach Saban. What he's done for the game is absolutely incredible.
- 5:34Speaker 1: But yeah, you're telling me the man... who had the
- 5:37Speaker 1: most advantages relative to his peers throughout his entire tenure
- 5:41Speaker 1: in Alabama and was able to execute and take full
- 5:44Speaker 1: advantage of those. Like, that's the guy that wants to
- 5:47Speaker 1: go back the way things were. Well, no shit. You know,
- 5:51Speaker 1: people in power always want to go back to the
- 5:53Speaker 1: way things were when others get that power. Yes. And
- 5:57Speaker 1: I'm not saying that we can't improve things, but it
- 5:59Speaker 1: is dangerous here. Because if you enjoy the parody, you
- 6:03Speaker 1: have to accept that it's only created by the portal,
- 6:06Speaker 1: by NIL, and you have to be very wary of
- 6:09Speaker 1: the changes that you make lest you step back into
- 6:12Speaker 1: the dark ages where these super programs can hoard all
- 6:15Speaker 1: the talent and have their way with everyone.
- 6:17Speaker 3: And I am on the same page as you, T-Bob.
- 6:21Speaker 3: And again, I maybe am on a similar viewpoint because
- 6:26Speaker 3: I am of the belief that There are very few
- 6:31Speaker 3: programs out there, maybe zero programs out there, that are
- 6:35Speaker 3: in a better position to move forward in this era
- 6:40Speaker 3: of pay-for-play, portal, everything, than Miami. You look at the
- 6:45Speaker 3: state with the income tax part of it, the location,
- 6:49Speaker 3: the program, the resources, Canes Connection, all of it. Miami
- 6:53Speaker 3: is in a wonderful position. right now with where college
- 6:57Speaker 3: football is. And I think that's why I fall on
- 6:59Speaker 3: the side of like the protect college sports act is like, okay,
- 7:02Speaker 3: we're gonna, we're gonna limit the players pay and the
- 7:05Speaker 3: salary cap, but we're not gonna actually have the players
- 7:07Speaker 3: involved to collectively bargain to like, it's crazy. So it
- 7:12Speaker 3: is a, it's kind of like the archaic, the old
- 7:15Speaker 3: school trying to hang on there. And we're going to
- 7:18Speaker 3: worry about capping salaries for coaches, but the players, they
- 7:21Speaker 3: can have no say in anything. Look, whether you like
- 7:23Speaker 3: the toothpaste is out of the tube. Players are going
- 7:26Speaker 3: to get paid and you just got to evolve and
- 7:30Speaker 3: move on. And we're not going to get Bear Bryant,
- 7:33Speaker 3: 190 man rosters. And I like it. It just isn't there.
- 7:36Speaker 3: That's where we are. So yeah, I'm glad you led
- 7:38Speaker 3: down the road of the, the, Tech College Sports Act because, yeah,
- 7:42Speaker 3: not a fan.
- 7:42Speaker 1: It's pissing me off.
- 7:43Speaker 2: T-Bob, I don't want to put words in your mouth,
- 7:45Speaker 2: but it sounds like you were telling Saban to do
- 7:47Speaker 2: it in the NIL era.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Like, that's what it sounded like to me. I mean,
- 7:52Speaker 1: if we were to put it through the Stugatzian translation machine, absolutely.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Do it in the NIL era.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Yes.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I guess, I mean, I'm just, again, it's just... they,
- 8:02Speaker 1: it's just, every time I see it, they just speak
- 8:04Speaker 1: of it with this objective, uh, what, what they appear
- 8:08Speaker 1: to be like objective truth that the sport is broken,
- 8:11Speaker 1: where I see what looks like a potentially a more
- 8:14Speaker 1: healthy sport than we've seen in years in terms of
- 8:17Speaker 1: like more people having hope and programs rising and falling
- 8:19Speaker 1: and coaching like actual football coaching, not recruiting now mattering
- 8:25Speaker 1: more than ever. Yes.
- 8:27Speaker 2: It's hard to sit up there on that stage with,
- 8:29Speaker 2: you know, 50,000 people in Utah coming out to see
- 8:31Speaker 2: you and say that college football is in trouble.
- 8:36Speaker 1: It seems to be doing just fine. Yes.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Every marker out there will tell you college football is
- 8:42Speaker 3: not in trouble with the contracts that coaches are getting paid,
- 8:46Speaker 3: the buyouts of coaching contracts, TV ratings, money for television contracts,
- 8:51Speaker 3: money for the college football playoff. The last thing that
- 8:55Speaker 3: anyone with a brain is going to believe that college
- 8:58Speaker 3: football is in dire trouble. I mean, yes. Things can
- 9:02Speaker 3: always be improved.
- 9:03Speaker 1: More organized. That's it.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Wrangled in.
- 9:05Speaker 1: That's it.
- 9:06Speaker 3: That's probably better, yeah.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Yes, more organized. All right. So, sorry.
- 9:09Speaker 5: I didn't mean to make a guy trip there, but
- 9:10Speaker 5: that was good.
- 9:12Speaker 3: No, no.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Quickly, before you get to your next point, because Bear
- 9:14Speaker 2: brought up something interesting to me. If I am a
- 9:17Speaker 2: high school kid, if I'm a high school quarterback, if
- 9:19Speaker 2: I'm a five-star recruit, four-star, it doesn't matter, and I'm
- 9:23Speaker 2: watching UM games and what's going on at the University
- 9:27Speaker 2: of Miami, and I'm checking out the sidelines, and I'm
- 9:30Speaker 2: checking out Malachi Toney, and I'm checking out Mensa, and
- 9:33Speaker 2: I'm checking out the party that happens when Miami plays
- 9:36Speaker 2: football games down here.
- 9:37Speaker 1: That is a place.
- 9:38Speaker 2: It was very much like Florida back in the day,
- 9:40Speaker 2: where if you looked at the swamp, you looked at
- 9:42Speaker 2: the sidelines, that was a place that you would want
- 9:45Speaker 2: to go to play your football, to spend your college years.
- 9:48Speaker 2: And Miami is having a run right now. Because if
- 9:50Speaker 2: I'm a kid, if I'm a senior or junior, and
- 9:52Speaker 2: I'm watching.
- 9:53Speaker 1: On my television... and Michael.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Irvin's a mentor, and Ed Reed is sitting there, and
- 9:59Speaker 2: Warren Sapp is sitting there. there, man, and it's Miami,
- 10:03Speaker 2: and it's South Beach. That's a place I want to
- 10:05Speaker 2: go to. And so Miami just has this incredible edge
- 10:09Speaker 2: right now.
- 10:10Speaker 1: It's fantastic. Uh, they're, they're, they, they've been one of
- 10:13Speaker 1: the big winners of this new era. I guess I,
- 10:15Speaker 1: I just, I don't want people to take this conversation
- 10:18Speaker 1: as being, oh, well, of course y'all are supporting because
- 10:21Speaker 1: Miami again, look at Kentucky, look at wake forest. Yes. Uh,
- 10:25Speaker 1: doing more than anybody with, with Dicker looking at it. And, and,
- 10:29Speaker 1: and I think that the, the Dicker point is important
- 10:32Speaker 1: here and I'll give a Portnoy my. fearless leader that,
- 10:36Speaker 1: you know, that I work with. Yes. He made this
- 10:41Speaker 1: point yesterday because the talent gaps are more equal now, right?
- 10:45Speaker 1: It's in Flandreau and you are not just inherently that
- 10:48Speaker 1: much better than your opponent. Your margin of error gets lessened.
- 10:52Speaker 1: A bad play or two affects you a lot more nowadays. Therefore, again,
- 10:56Speaker 1: we're seeing a shift where the actual football coaching is
- 11:00Speaker 1: supersedes the ability to recruit potentially. And now you still
- 11:05Speaker 1: have to recruit yourself to a massive team, but if
- 11:06Speaker 1: you have finances, you get it right. It's not the same,
- 11:09Speaker 1: but like the actual game day coaching is now taking
- 11:12Speaker 1: on greater imports. And we're going to see which guys
- 11:16Speaker 1: are best at that and what you're not.
- 11:17Speaker 2: All right.
- 11:17Speaker 3: And I think you look, look at, look at that.
- 11:20Speaker 3: I think they go hand in hand, like the new
- 11:22Speaker 3: coaches that come in, either bringing in their rosters from
- 11:25Speaker 3: the portal or, or the coming in with it. Like,
- 11:28Speaker 3: look at Chesney. Look at Will Stein, like the immediate,
- 11:32Speaker 3: immediate turnarounds coaching does matter.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Yeah. And the Will Stein one is particularly well-made. It's basically,
- 11:40Speaker 1: even though the lions have, uh, right at the ship
- 11:43Speaker 1: in the NFL, it has a lot of shades of
- 11:45Speaker 1: like Ben Johnson leaving Detroit, right? Where Will Stein leaves
- 11:49Speaker 1: Oregon now sitting there at four and three. just fired
- 11:52Speaker 1: their offensive coordinator, and Kentucky sits alone atop the SEC.
- 11:56Speaker 1: It's amazing the impact that a good game-day coach can
- 12:01Speaker 1: have in this new era. All right, let's take a
- 12:04Speaker 1: quick break, and then when we get back, we got
- 12:07Speaker 1: five upsets, okay? Unranked teams beating ranked teams to get
- 12:10Speaker 1: into over this weekend. Texas back with yet another top-10 win.
- 12:15Speaker 1: The Big Bag Big Ten. Plenty more to get to
- 12:18Speaker 1: on today's college football show with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 12:44Speaker 1: What's happening, y'all? Welcome back. College football show with Sue
- 12:47Speaker 1: Gotts of the Bear and special guest, T-Bob Abram. All right,
- 12:50Speaker 1: so five upsets Saturday, guys. UCF beats number two, BYU.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Cincinnati beats number eight, Texas Tech. South Carolina beats number 11, Tennessee.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Minnesota beats number 15.
- 13:03Speaker 1: They were favored, but bear, it's a theme, damn it. Yes. Fuck. theme,
- 13:07Speaker 1: unranked teams beating ranked teams. Minnesota beating Iowa. Thank you.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Wisconsin beating USC.
- 13:18Speaker 4: He's doing a thing.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Which one of these looms largest, rings loudest when you
- 13:27Speaker 1: hear these outcomes?
- 13:29Speaker 3: Cincinnati beating Texas Tech in the fashion that they did.
- 13:33Speaker 3: We all were knee-jerk, prisoner of the moment with all
- 13:37Speaker 3: the Big 12 love from the previous week off of
- 13:39Speaker 3: the BYU-UCF game, I mean, the BYU-Notre Dame game. But
- 13:43Speaker 3: I think Texas Tech going to Cincinnati, and Cincinnati obviously
- 13:48Speaker 3: had a bit of a red asshole for the whole
- 13:50Speaker 3: Brennan-Thorsby situation, were out to prove a point, took the
- 13:54Speaker 3: double-digit underdog role as a major slight, and they kicked
- 13:57Speaker 3: Texas Tech's ass. I mean, that was never really a
- 14:00Speaker 3: game that was in doubt, and give Scott Satterfield and
- 14:04Speaker 3: the Bearcats a ton of credit It feels like now
- 14:09Speaker 3: it had been kind of noticeable that this Texas Tech
- 14:13Speaker 3: team was clearly not the type of team that we
- 14:16Speaker 3: saw last year. And it just felt like we were
- 14:20Speaker 3: kind of waiting for them to kind of get that
- 14:22Speaker 3: law done. Look, they went on the road last year
- 14:24Speaker 3: to Arizona State and lost a game in their rally.
- 14:25Speaker 3: But I don't think this team is in the same strategy.
- 14:29Speaker 3: I would be surprised if they... they may lose at
- 14:32Speaker 3: Oklahoma state as well. I mean, that's a game that
- 14:35Speaker 3: could be a very difficult game. They don't play BYU,
- 14:37Speaker 3: they don't play Utah, but this is not a team
- 14:39Speaker 3: that's going to finish whether they made the conference championship
- 14:42Speaker 3: game or not. They're not going to finish with just
- 14:44Speaker 3: one loss. It seemed like there were a lot of,
- 14:45Speaker 3: a lot of happy people out there that Texas tech
- 14:49Speaker 3: did take this one on the, on the chain with
- 14:51Speaker 3: the way things transpired in the off season with Swordsby
- 14:54Speaker 3: and just kind of this renegade type program. And when,
- 14:58Speaker 3: when you're prominent financier, it takes to, social media and
- 15:01Speaker 3: voices of displeasure, things are probably not going well. Yes.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Hell hath no fury, like a billionaire scorned bear. And yeah,
- 15:11Speaker 1: Campbell did tweet after the games as quote, there's no
- 15:14Speaker 1: excuse to reason to lose a game like this. We
- 15:15Speaker 1: have to be better. But what I found more interesting quote,
- 15:18Speaker 1: this was back in September. When all the Sorsby stuff
- 15:21Speaker 1: was going down and Campbell was pissed at Cincinnati, he said, quote,
- 15:25Speaker 1: we're not going to forget about that. And I don't
- 15:27Speaker 1: think they'll forget about it either when we're up by 40,
- 15:30Speaker 1: still throwing the ball in the fourth quarter. That's where
- 15:34Speaker 1: the retribution will come. Not so fast, Red Raiders. Still
- 15:39Speaker 1: love Jim McGuire, but that's a terrible loss. Stu.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:45Speaker 1: South Carolina upset Tennessee, or beats Tennessee. Sorry, Bear. Yes.
- 15:48Speaker 1: This weekend. Of course, this is one that Vegas was
- 15:52Speaker 1: all over. What were your thoughts on Lenore Sellers finding
- 15:57Speaker 1: his way to the end zone at the end of
- 15:59Speaker 1: that game there and putting South Carolina over the top?
- 16:02Speaker 4: We got a cover, right? Was that the reason we
- 16:04Speaker 4: got a cover, Bear?
- 16:05Speaker 1: Yes. No, we got a cover. Yeah, the game-winning field goal.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Then there was a turnover, and they kicked the game-winning
- 16:09Speaker 1: field goal because it was two and a half. Yes.
- 16:12Speaker 2: It was a fantastic drive by Sellers, mostly because it
- 16:14Speaker 2: won me money. I wasn't really thinking too much about Sellers,
- 16:17Speaker 2: too much about the big picture with South Carolina.
- 16:19Speaker 4: I was just honed in on that afternoon.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I was furious at whoever in our group text sent
- 16:24Speaker 2: us something that said, go Cocks, they're up 14 to nothing.
- 16:27Speaker 2: And I was furious because I thought you would just
- 16:29Speaker 2: jinx the bet.
- 16:30Speaker 1: That was you, T-Bob. Thank you. But listen, the SEC
- 16:33Speaker 1: is weird, man.
- 16:34Speaker 2: You have these teams who are constantly winning big games
- 16:36Speaker 2: and then losing the very next week.
- 16:38Speaker 4: And it happened again to Tennessee.
- 16:40Speaker 2: And so I just don't know how many teams are
- 16:42Speaker 2: going to come out of that conference, which teams are
- 16:43Speaker 2: going to come out of that conference, and how the
- 16:45Speaker 2: committee is going to figure out what teams to put
- 16:48Speaker 2: into the playoffs from that conference.
- 16:50Speaker 1: You know? Do we feel differently about BYU on the
- 16:53Speaker 1: other side of this UCF game? You have to. Because
- 16:55Speaker 1: I'm in a weird spot where I don't know that
- 16:57Speaker 1: I actually do. Really? We called this spot tricky. They
- 17:01Speaker 1: beat Notre Dame. Great game there. We've seen the emotional
- 17:03Speaker 1: letdown script like 18 times, it feels like, this college
- 17:06Speaker 1: football season. I feel like this is almost like understandable
- 17:10Speaker 1: and everything that BYU wants to accomplish is still ahead
- 17:13Speaker 1: of them. I actually don't feel that bad about BYU
- 17:16Speaker 1: right now, guys.
- 17:17Speaker 3: This was one of those things where, look, Everybody got
- 17:21Speaker 3: wound up and excited. They were a double-digit underdog at home.
- 17:25Speaker 3: They beat Notre Dame, controversial finish. They deserved to win
- 17:28Speaker 3: the game, but Notre Dame did not play great. And
- 17:31Speaker 3: I think everyone got so, oh, BYU should be number one.
- 17:36Speaker 3: This is where my world of watching games, having a
- 17:43Speaker 3: betting slant, having a statistical slant, you knew BYU was not...
- 17:49Speaker 3: the best or the second best or the third best
- 17:51Speaker 3: team in the country. You knew with your Vegas power
- 17:54Speaker 3: ratings and your Saga rating and your FPI and your
- 17:57Speaker 3: SP plus, they're down around 13, 14, 16. That's where
- 18:03Speaker 3: they are in terms of rating, but you got to
- 18:05Speaker 3: respect the win. And we all knew, we talked about
- 18:09Speaker 3: it last week. You just mentioned it. It was like
- 18:11Speaker 3: prime upset spot. Like you couldn't paint that. a better picture.
- 18:17Speaker 3: You couldn't have a better poster child for an upset
- 18:20Speaker 3: than what we saw in Orlando last week. One of
- 18:24Speaker 3: the biggest wins in program history. Now go on the
- 18:27Speaker 3: road to UCF and play the three and three golden
- 18:29Speaker 3: Knights in the middle of the afternoon in Orlando. And
- 18:33Speaker 3: it's a six and a half point road favorite. It was,
- 18:36Speaker 3: it was a recipe for disaster from the start and
- 18:38Speaker 3: they almost survived it. So give them credit for that.
- 18:41Speaker 3: But yeah, I don't feel a whole lot different about
- 18:44Speaker 3: what I thought about BYU before last week than I
- 18:47Speaker 3: do right now. I still think we'll see what happens
- 18:52Speaker 3: in the Holy War in a couple weeks when they
- 18:54Speaker 3: play Utah. But I still think they are one of
- 18:58Speaker 3: the two best teams in the Big 12. We'll find
- 19:00Speaker 3: out some more about Utah this week.
- 19:02Speaker 2: So Bear, I'm at the point in the season where
- 19:03Speaker 2: I'm starting to think, what will the committee do? So
- 19:05Speaker 2: just play this out for a second.
- 19:07Speaker 1: I'm with you.
- 19:07Speaker 2: I'm not that concerned about BYU. But If BYU, let's
- 19:11Speaker 2: say they end the season with the same record as
- 19:14Speaker 2: Notre Dame, who is the committee? So that means BYU
- 19:17Speaker 2: has beaten Utah, by the way, and Notre Dame beats Miami.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Or let's say they both lose those games, okay? But
- 19:23Speaker 2: they have the same record, and BYU wins head-to-head. They
- 19:25Speaker 2: beat Notre Dame. Bad call at the end of the game,
- 19:28Speaker 2: but they still win. Who does that committee put in
- 19:30Speaker 2: if they're only putting in one?
- 19:32Speaker 3: Well, if you're being honest, and we all know that
- 19:37Speaker 3: they can certainly– mold their decisions behind any method that
- 19:42Speaker 3: they want. But if we're holding the head-to-head methodology true,
- 19:48Speaker 3: then you would have to put BYU ahead of Notre Dame.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Although I will say, I think if a 10-2 situation
- 19:58Speaker 3: I think might be different from an 11-1 situation. only
- 20:01Speaker 3: because 11 and one would mean Notre Dame would then
- 20:04Speaker 3: have a win over number one, Miami. And they might
- 20:07Speaker 3: be able to say, yeah, well, it was a road game.
- 20:10Speaker 3: It was controversial. Notre Dame was a big fate. They'll, they'll,
- 20:14Speaker 3: they'll say whatever they want to justify whatever decision that
- 20:17Speaker 3: they want to make. But 10 and two, I think
- 20:19Speaker 3: is much different because then I think that law, that
- 20:22Speaker 3: game absolutely has to matter. And you've got to get
- 20:25Speaker 3: BYU the benefit of the doubt and the credit for
- 20:28Speaker 3: winning that game.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:29Speaker 3: But, We all know how this goes. BYU fans felt
- 20:35Speaker 3: really slighted last year, losing the Big 12 championship game
- 20:39Speaker 3: and getting jumped in that final poll. Look at the
- 20:42Speaker 3: power ratings. It was not a decision to be made.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Miami had the better wins in BYU. It should not
- 20:47Speaker 3: have been a debate, but.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Okay, okay, okay.
- 20:50Speaker 3: We don't want to relitigate last year.
- 20:52Speaker 1: No, no, you are fair. You made it to the
- 20:54Speaker 1: natty last year.
- 20:55Speaker 3: No, you do have to justify your existence there. And
- 20:58Speaker 3: if we could have fucking not allowed a block punt,
- 21:01Speaker 3: we would have won the goddamn national championship.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Wait, T-Bob is cracking up. Do you agree with that?
- 21:07Speaker 2: Because I do think 10-2 is different than if they
- 21:09Speaker 2: both finish 11-1. 10-2 means Notre Dame doesn't have a
- 21:13Speaker 2: win against a good team basically the entire year, right?
- 21:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yes. That's a difference, but again, the wild card
- 21:19Speaker 1: is the Big 12 championship. Is BYU in there? Are
- 21:21Speaker 1: they not? Because we kind of had this early playoff
- 21:24Speaker 1: precedent where what happened in those games didn't matter and
- 21:27Speaker 1: wouldn't get you dinged, but it definitely got used against
- 21:30Speaker 1: BYU last year. So I'm not sure. How about this?
- 21:33Speaker 1: Let's talk about things we can be sure on, Stu. Yes.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Lincoln Riley. I mean, what are we doing, too?
- 21:41Speaker 2: Right?
- 21:42Speaker 1: Like, it's over. It's already been over, right? But getting
- 21:46Speaker 1: dominated by Wisconsin. The only thing they ever hung their
- 21:54Speaker 1: hat on at USC under Riley was at least Jadon
- 21:56Speaker 1: Maiav and the offense was always good. Seven points on Saturdays, too.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Stinking Lincoln.
- 22:01Speaker 4: Is he done out in L.A.? There's a spot. There's
- 22:03Speaker 4: a spot open for Lincoln.
- 22:05Speaker 2: And this is the exact spot that we talked about,
- 22:07Speaker 2: me and Mike Yeh, on our show. If Lincoln left USC,
- 22:11Speaker 2: a spot he would have to go to to kind
- 22:13Speaker 2: of go on the coaching rehab tour.
- 22:15Speaker 1: He can go to Baylor.
- 22:16Speaker 4: But Lincoln Riley is done at USC.
- 22:19Speaker 1: There is no question. USC. I'm surprised they put up
- 22:21Speaker 1: with it for this long, to be quite honest with you. Yeah.
- 22:25Speaker 3: You know what this is setting up for, right?
- 22:27Speaker 2: What?
- 22:27Speaker 3: You know what's going to happen Saturday at the Coliseum, right?
- 22:30Speaker 1: What?
- 22:31Speaker 3: USC is going to win and beat Ohio State, the
- 22:34Speaker 3: backup quarterback, as a seven-point dog after playing like absolute
- 22:37Speaker 3: dog shit in Wisconsin.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Yes. Because this is what college football is. Yes. Oh,
- 22:42Speaker 1: that is kind of true. Oh, that seems crazy. And
- 22:45Speaker 1: then he's back. Your third eye might be open here, Bear.
- 22:49Speaker 1: And then, I mean, look, we probably don't need to
- 22:51Speaker 1: talk about this one, but since we've talked about it
- 22:53Speaker 1: on the show so much, I would like to give
- 22:55Speaker 1: condolences to To the people that I told to prepare
- 22:59Speaker 1: their children for Kirk Ferentz to the playoffs because it
- 23:03Speaker 1: does look like Iowa pulled a classic Iowa here. Which
- 23:05Speaker 1: I don't know what to make of Minnesota either, though.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Shout out to Minnesota. A couple of really nice home wins.
- 23:10Speaker 1: I think they're like fourth in the Big Ten somehow
- 23:12Speaker 1: right now. Shout out P.J. Fleck and the Gophers. Yes,
- 23:15Speaker 1: I got to be honest.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I was never preparing myself or my kids for Iowa
- 23:19Speaker 2: being in the playoff. It was a nice thing to say,
- 23:21Speaker 2: but I wasn't preparing for it.
- 23:24Speaker 3: They can lose to anybody. They can beat any coin
- 23:28Speaker 3: flip type game.
- 23:29Speaker 1: But yeah, no.
- 23:30Speaker 3: And then that being said, it was still what would
- 23:32Speaker 3: have been a soda hat, 200 yards in the game.
- 23:35Speaker 3: And however, when we talked about spots, the only side
- 23:38Speaker 3: you could play on Saturday at Kinnick is Iowa. Wisconsin,
- 23:42Speaker 3: I think the last four games against Iowa, they have scored... 10, 6, 10,
- 23:49Speaker 3: and 0. Now they're coming in here off of a
- 23:52Speaker 3: win against SC. Massive win. Everybody's happy. Luke Fickle's on
- 23:57Speaker 3: good terms now. Now you're going to ugly it up
- 24:00Speaker 3: at Kinnick with Iowa. It's a team you haven't been
- 24:02Speaker 3: able to score on in a reason. Like, Iowa is
- 24:04Speaker 3: the only side in this game that you can play.
- 24:06Speaker 1: All right, let's get to the game of the week,
- 24:10Speaker 1: or at least the biggest game last Saturday, and that was...
- 24:14Speaker 1: Texas beating No. 7 Ole Miss at home. Apparently, Texas
- 24:19Speaker 1: just needs to play top 10 teams. It's the unranked
- 24:21Speaker 1: teams that give them crap because right now, Texas moves
- 24:25Speaker 1: to 5-1 against their last six top 10 teams. And
- 24:28Speaker 1: what do we make of Arch here, guys? He has
- 24:30Speaker 1: the incredible first half, that unbelievable camera shot where he
- 24:35Speaker 1: scores the rushing touchdown. He flexes, he poses, fireworks going
- 24:38Speaker 1: off behind him. It was one of those beautiful live
- 24:41Speaker 1: sports moments that we seemingly are getting so much better
- 24:44Speaker 1: and better at in this new era in terms of
- 24:46Speaker 1: things that look like they should be in a movie,
- 24:48Speaker 1: but they're created live in front of us. So this
- 24:50Speaker 1: first half, they're up 24-3. And then they completely Texas
- 24:54Speaker 1: at second half arch even throws the fourth quarter pick,
- 24:58Speaker 1: but they managed to overcome and win Stu. They managed
- 25:01Speaker 1: to finish the fight. Has your opinion changed on arch
- 25:04Speaker 1: after that performance?
- 25:05Speaker 2: It hasn't it's you know, he played well in that
- 25:08Speaker 2: first half and I know they had, you know, he
- 25:10Speaker 2: had the great throw. They kept showing it over and
- 25:12Speaker 2: over again, but at the end of the day, he
- 25:13Speaker 2: was 18 to 30, 212 yards, a touchdown, two interceptions.
- 25:16Speaker 2: I know he ran for two more, but Mississippi came
- 25:19Speaker 2: back and that was predictable. You knew Mississippi, uh, would
- 25:22Speaker 2: make a run in that game. But no, I'm not,
- 25:25Speaker 2: I wasn't left, I didn't leave that game feeling any
- 25:28Speaker 2: differently about Arch Manning than I did before the game started.
- 25:33Speaker 1: That might be unfair. Bear, did you?
- 25:35Speaker 2: Because I did not. He's still not a guy I
- 25:37Speaker 2: would take in the first round of the NFL draft,
- 25:39Speaker 2: you know?
- 25:39Speaker 3: It felt like every Texas game that we've seen this
- 25:42Speaker 3: year that had been decided late. But that being said,
- 25:51Speaker 3: it's such a maddening exercise trying to rank power rate,
- 25:56Speaker 3: figure this damn team out because you put, Wins over
- 26:00Speaker 3: Ohio State when they're at full strength.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Yes.
- 26:03Speaker 3: Tennessee and Ole Miss.
- 26:04Speaker 5: Yes.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Who's got three wins in that?
- 26:06Speaker 1: Nobody. No one.
- 26:08Speaker 3: If they happen to lose to LSU when they're sitting
- 26:11Speaker 3: there at 9-3, their 9-3 is going to be a
- 26:15Speaker 3: hell of a lot better than a bunch of teams 10-2,
- 26:17Speaker 3: and that's going to be a decision ultimately. for the
- 26:21Speaker 3: college football playoff selection committee. If indeed Texas does drop
- 26:24Speaker 3: one of these games and they, they can lose to Missouri.
- 26:27Speaker 3: They can lose to LSU. I don't know if they
- 26:29Speaker 3: can lose to A & M because Marcel Reed against
- 26:31Speaker 3: that defense. I don't like Marcel Reed's chances, but the
- 26:36Speaker 3: thing moving forward for Texas, if they, if Relique Brown
- 26:38Speaker 3: is going to run like that with a frigging man possessed,
- 26:42Speaker 3: that is huge because we're losing Goolsby on the offensive line.
- 26:46Speaker 3: It's going to be a big deal in pass protection.
- 26:48Speaker 3: They can simplify things. get that type of running game.
- 26:51Speaker 3: And remember, Arch had a big scramble as well. That's
- 26:54Speaker 3: the shit he did late last year against A &
- 26:56Speaker 3: M and in the ball game that made him dangerous.
- 26:58Speaker 3: If he can do that and feel confident enough in
- 27:02Speaker 3: his ability to make a split decision and go, that's
- 27:05Speaker 3: going to help them out dramatically. But again, it was
- 27:10Speaker 3: good and bad. You see the great play and a
- 27:15Speaker 3: terrible pass, a long pass across the field. Super slow.
- 27:19Speaker 3: What are you doing throwing that ball?
- 27:21Speaker 2: Yeah, but I hope the committee, guys, is discerning enough.
- 27:25Speaker 2: If they don't lose another game, maybe even if they do,
- 27:29Speaker 2: to say, look at those wins against top 10 teams,
- 27:31Speaker 2: against top 15 teams. They're as talented as anyone in
- 27:35Speaker 2: the country. And the two losses were by a total
- 27:37Speaker 2: of six points. I mean, they lost by a field
- 27:39Speaker 2: goal to Florida. They lost by a field goal to
- 27:41Speaker 2: somebody else. But the teams they have beaten, yeah, Oklahoma.
- 27:45Speaker 2: And so I hope the committee is discerning enough to
- 27:47Speaker 2: say to themselves, on the right day, Texas can legitimately
- 27:51Speaker 2: beat any team in the country, even in the national
- 27:54Speaker 2: championship game. They're one of the most talented teams in
- 27:57Speaker 2: the country. I don't care about the two losses. I
- 27:59Speaker 2: don't care about the three losses. We're putting them into
- 28:01Speaker 2: a 12-team playoff. I hope.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Well, make no mistake. Like the same way that last
- 28:07Speaker 1: year was a weird year where like 10-2 Vanderbilt got
- 28:10Speaker 1: left out, this certainly has the feelings that a 9-3
- 28:16Speaker 1: team is going to get in from one of the
- 28:18Speaker 1: super conferences. I mean, right now, you look at LSU, Texas, Alabama,
- 28:25Speaker 1: they're all sitting on two losses. They all appear to
- 28:28Speaker 1: be capable of what you just said, Stu, of beating
- 28:30Speaker 1: anybody in the country when they are on, and they
- 28:32Speaker 1: all play each other. Yes. LSU's got home Bama, home
- 28:36Speaker 1: Texas at Tennessee. coming up. So, like, it's going to
- 28:40Speaker 1: get mad down the stretch here in the SEC. On
- 28:44Speaker 1: the other side of this break, I want to get
- 28:46Speaker 1: into the Big Ten. I want to get into Indiana
- 28:48Speaker 1: and Michigan, but then kind of take a look at
- 28:50Speaker 1: the conference as a whole and what it means, because
- 28:52Speaker 1: speaking of madness, there may not be a crazier conference
- 28:55Speaker 1: right now than what's going on up north. More College
- 28:58Speaker 1: Football Show with Stu Gotts and the Bear. Welcome back
- 29:20Speaker 1: to the College Football Show with Stu Gatz and the Bears.
- 29:23Speaker 1: As we teased right before the break, Indiana beats Michigan
- 29:26Speaker 1: 13-6 in overtime. I would like to apologize to anybody
- 29:31Speaker 1: who watched this game. Maybe if you watch this game
- 29:33Speaker 1: with your children.
- 29:34Speaker 3: Can you imagine watching that offensive non-performance and then being appalled?
- 29:40Speaker 3: of Big Ten college football fan and then going right
- 29:43Speaker 3: into Wisconsin, Iowa? You talk about wanting to put your
- 29:47Speaker 3: head in the toilet and vomit after that.
- 29:50Speaker 1: And it's like, so I wanted to troll a little
- 29:52Speaker 1: bit Saturday, and so I, like, highlighted the box score,
- 29:54Speaker 1: and I was like, Big Ten football, baby. And, of course,
- 29:57Speaker 1: everybody's showing me, like, 9-6 Alabama from back in the
- 30:00Speaker 1: game that I was involved in. And one guy was like, yo,
- 30:05Speaker 1: so when CSCC, it's fast defenses flying around, but when
- 30:08Speaker 1: it's a Big Ten, it's bad. Okay, I can look
- 30:11Speaker 1: at a game, and I can objectively meet it where
- 30:14Speaker 1: it's at, and I can discern– whether or not it's
- 30:17Speaker 1: great defense or is it just shitty puke on your
- 30:21Speaker 1: stomach offense. And this game was so clearly the latter.
- 30:25Speaker 1: I mean, the, the amount of offensive ineptitude in this game,
- 30:28Speaker 1: whether it's Jason Beck being completely incapable of calling a
- 30:33Speaker 1: football game, no matter who's under center for the.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Wolverines or Josh Hoover.
- 30:41Speaker 1: It's crazy. You have Bryce Underwood, just go bring him
- 30:43Speaker 1: in there. Like, and then on the Indiana side, They
- 30:47Speaker 1: can't run the ball anymore. Hoover misses open guys. It's
- 30:51Speaker 1: still a massive credit to Indiana and Cignetti and his
- 30:54Speaker 1: coaching acumen. That was why they're so relevant. They're still
- 30:57Speaker 1: able to win. But, yeah, neither. I mean, Indiana, let's
- 31:01Speaker 1: start there. Like, what is their ceilings? How much of
- 31:05Speaker 1: a threat are they? Because with a hurt Ohio State
- 31:08Speaker 1: quarterback and a UCLA team that's undefeated but not the scariest,
- 31:13Speaker 1: like the Big Ten is suddenly, after all this chest pumping,
- 31:16Speaker 1: looking like they're in a little bit of hot water
- 31:19Speaker 1: when you look at them going forward this year.
- 31:22Speaker 3: I think that they are the safest bet of any
- 31:28Speaker 3: of the teams in the Big Ten to make the
- 31:29Speaker 3: college football playoff.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 31:31Speaker 3: Because I don't think they have really any, like, more
- 31:35Speaker 3: than one potential losable game. However, that I maybe feel
- 31:39Speaker 3: a little bit differently now about Ohio state, but we'll
- 31:42Speaker 3: see what happens with Ohio state this week. I mean, yeah, no,
- 31:45Speaker 3: but I would have thought, I thought maybe that Oregon
- 31:46Speaker 3: game might be a little bit tougher, but clearly that's
- 31:48Speaker 3: not going to happen, but Indiana, at least they still
- 31:51Speaker 3: have a first class top notch defense. And I took
- 31:56Speaker 3: a lot of shit on Saturday and we talked about it.
- 31:59Speaker 3: I think during the week as well. I know I
- 32:01Speaker 3: talked about it on bear bets, the rumblings out there,
- 32:05Speaker 3: that Josh Hoover has got something going on with either
- 32:07Speaker 3: an arm, shoulder, and then this availability report. I'll be
- 32:14Speaker 3: politically prepared.
- 32:16Speaker 1: That was some excellent trolling by you on Twitter on Saturday,
- 32:20Speaker 1: tweeting out the injury report or availability report.
- 32:24Speaker 3: Oh, he goes from picking on Indiana to beat Ohio
- 32:27Speaker 3: State to questioning and saying we're hiding injuries. Well, you'd
- 32:31Speaker 3: probably be the first football team in modern history ever
- 32:34Speaker 3: to with 100 guys on the roster to not have someone.
- 32:37Speaker 5: Not a single person. Not a single person was on
- 32:40Speaker 5: the injury report. But finally he admitted it. Finally, Kurt
- 32:44Speaker 5: Cignetti admitted after the game. He's like, he wasn't 100%,
- 32:47Speaker 5: but we're going to stick with him. So I feel
- 32:50Speaker 5: a little vindication. But that's going to be the question.
- 32:53Speaker 3: If Hoover is incapable of completing a forward pass, and
- 32:57Speaker 3: they have to try and get B.B. and Richard going,
- 33:00Speaker 3: which they have not been able to do. They need
- 33:03Speaker 3: Mike Koenig back at center, damn it.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:06Speaker 3: Offensive line going. That being said, their defense, with who
- 33:11Speaker 3: they have remaining on the schedule, is good enough to
- 33:13Speaker 3: beat anybody, get to the playoff, but this is not
- 33:16Speaker 3: a team that I think ultimately is a threat to
- 33:19Speaker 3: a repeat as national title.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Minnesota, USC, Washington, Purdue. Three of those games are at home.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Indiana's going to make it to the playoff. They're not
- 33:28Speaker 2: nearly as good as they were offensively a year ago,
- 33:31Speaker 2: but still a pretty good football team. Just because of
- 33:33Speaker 2: that schedule, it's got to be great if Lincoln Riley
- 33:35Speaker 2: beats them and Ohio State. But just with that schedule,
- 33:39Speaker 2: those four games, I have a hard time thinking Indiana. Now,
- 33:42Speaker 2: I'm not saying they're going to go far. I'm not
- 33:44Speaker 2: saying they're going to do anything. I'm just saying that's
- 33:46Speaker 2: a playoff team based on the schedule and the fact
- 33:48Speaker 2: that they only have one loss.
- 33:49Speaker 1: And that loss, man, I mean, they.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Were so close to beating Ohio State at home just
- 33:54Speaker 2: a couple of weeks ago. So I have a hard
- 33:56Speaker 2: time thinking they're not going to make it, that's for sure.
- 33:58Speaker 1: So I agree. But so I guess that's kind of
- 34:02Speaker 1: the point that I wanted us to kind of arrive
- 34:04Speaker 1: at naturally, which is like Indiana may be the class
- 34:08Speaker 1: of the Big Ten. And yet none of us think
- 34:10Speaker 1: that they have a chance of winning the national championship. Yes.
- 34:13Speaker 1: And really you look at all the, the, the, the,
- 34:16Speaker 1: the chest bumping and, and, you know, the padding on
- 34:18Speaker 1: the back, the big Tim's done of themselves, how hard
- 34:20Speaker 1: it is, how quality the conferences and what had kind
- 34:23Speaker 1: of become the accepted line was okay. Yeah. Maybe the
- 34:27Speaker 1: middle tier and low tier aren't quite as good, but
- 34:31Speaker 1: the heavyweights are heavy and they'll bang with anybody and
- 34:35Speaker 1: beat anybody. But you look right now, guys, UCLA sits
- 34:38Speaker 1: atop undefeated. Again, very great story. I love this team.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Still a flawed team, you would think, ceiling-wise. Ohio State's
- 34:46Speaker 1: right next to them. They're missing their starting quarterback. We
- 34:49Speaker 1: mentioned Indiana Falls. Then you get to Northwestern. Then it's Minnesota,
- 34:52Speaker 1: it's Wisconsin, USC. I mean, you have Oregon sitting at 4-3,
- 34:56Speaker 1: 1-3 in conference, losing to Illinois. Penn State in a
- 35:01Speaker 1: year that is wide open. Penn State. Fire James Franklin
- 35:05Speaker 1: and is now 0-4 in the conference right next to
- 35:08Speaker 1: Maryland and Michigan State. Michigan sits at 1-3. Their powers,
- 35:13Speaker 1: their heavyweights are like featherweights this year, guys. It's bad
- 35:16Speaker 1: in the conference.
- 35:18Speaker 3: It really is because I don't think anybody really sees
- 35:22Speaker 3: UCLA as a national title contender. The fact we're sitting
- 35:25Speaker 3: here talking about, I love Chip. Chip is my guy.
- 35:29Speaker 3: I don't think anyone considers Northwestern to be what we
- 35:32Speaker 3: would expect to be a playoff team in here. Ohio State,
- 35:37Speaker 3: without saying, I don't think they can win the national championship. Indiana,
- 35:41Speaker 3: I don't think is a national title contender. The fact
- 35:43Speaker 3: that Oregon fell completely flat on their face, whether it
- 35:47Speaker 3: was because of bad coordinator hires, whether it's because of
- 35:49Speaker 3: the injury to Moore, whether it's because of youth on
- 35:52Speaker 3: the award, whatever it had been, talent evaluation, injury, coordinator hires,
- 35:56Speaker 3: it was a perfect shitstorm. to have the season go
- 35:59Speaker 3: wrong in Eugene, where they put together a lot of
- 36:02Speaker 3: resources and expected this to be the year in Eugene
- 36:05Speaker 3: to complete for a title, and it's not going to happen.
- 36:07Speaker 3: I would imagine we've seen the last of Dante More
- 36:10Speaker 3: now for the remainder of the season with really all
- 36:12Speaker 3: of Oregon's goals gone.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Wait, wait, so I've seen people saying that, Bear, and
- 36:20Speaker 1: help me understand exactly why, right? Like, I feel as
- 36:25Speaker 1: if we've seen... NFL scouts in the past, like they
- 36:29Speaker 1: want you to want to play football because you want
- 36:32Speaker 1: to play football. Like sitting out of an exhibition bowl
- 36:35Speaker 1: game is one thing. If you're telling me that Dante
- 36:37Speaker 1: Moore is going to shut it down because his goals
- 36:41Speaker 1: are off the table, like championships are, uh, wouldn't that
- 36:45Speaker 1: tank his NFL stock? I mean, he already wasn't good
- 36:48Speaker 1: this year. Like he already came back to try to
- 36:50Speaker 1: prove that he deserved the top five billing. If he
- 36:53Speaker 1: doesn't come back and play here, there is zero chance
- 36:56Speaker 1: if I'm an NFL team that I would trust him
- 36:57Speaker 1: in that spot.
- 36:59Speaker 3: It's a good point. It's a good thing to rationalize.
- 37:01Speaker 3: It's kind of a contrarian type dissenting view on what,
- 37:04Speaker 3: because I think most people would say, Why go out there? Now, again,
- 37:08Speaker 3: in this era now, who knows? Maybe whatever agreement he
- 37:12Speaker 3: has in place mandates that he play a certain number
- 37:16Speaker 3: of games or unless he is, what they'll say is
- 37:18Speaker 3: he's still not fully recovered from his concussion and the
- 37:21Speaker 3: injury that happened at SC. He's not clear to play.
- 37:24Speaker 3: And they'll phrase it that way. That way he can't go.
- 37:27Speaker 3: But I think typically in the past we would say,
- 37:30Speaker 3: I don't want to hurt my draft stock. I don't
- 37:34Speaker 3: want to risk injury. like other guys. Remember the shit
- 37:37Speaker 3: Cam Ward took for coming out of the game at
- 37:40Speaker 3: halftime with a frigging Pop-Tarts ball? Cam Ward is not
- 37:43Speaker 3: a team guy. He's a bad player. And then he
- 37:47Speaker 3: goes number one in the draft. So, like, you can
- 37:49Speaker 3: say what you want, but ultimately I don't think that's
- 37:52Speaker 3: going to have a massive way one way or another.
- 37:55Speaker 3: It'll just be how they phrase it. But if I'm Dante,
- 37:58Speaker 3: even I would think Dan Lanning would be like– You
- 38:04Speaker 3: may want to play, but we're going to protect you
- 38:06Speaker 3: here and help you out. And if you really want
- 38:09Speaker 3: to play, then we'll take you. But who's calling plays
- 38:12Speaker 3: now for Oregon? Like, this could be behind that offensive
- 38:15Speaker 3: line with a new play caller for whatever. Like, this
- 38:18Speaker 3: could be a really bad deal.
- 38:19Speaker 4: So I think Oregon.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Dante Moore needs to view this as an opportunity though,
- 38:24Speaker 1: to show that he can overcome adversity, that he can
- 38:26Speaker 1: deal with a coach being fired in the middle of
- 38:28Speaker 1: the year and come back and prove. Cause he still
- 38:30Speaker 1: has the black mark on his entire resume of not
- 38:32Speaker 1: showing up in big games. And they have the opportunity
- 38:35Speaker 1: to maybe play spoiler to a couple of teams here
- 38:37Speaker 1: down the stretch. Like, If I'm Dante Moore, not only
- 38:40Speaker 1: am I being paid a lot by trying to get
- 38:41Speaker 1: back to the field, but for my NFL stock, I'm
- 38:44Speaker 1: trying to get back to the field and show that
- 38:45Speaker 1: I'm willing to fight through injury because he's going to
- 38:47Speaker 1: get drafted to a bad NFL team. He's going to
- 38:50Speaker 1: have to be willing to play when goals are off
- 38:51Speaker 1: the table there. So, yeah, I think Moore's got to
- 38:54Speaker 1: come back and try to finish this thing off.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Yeah, he has to show that he can come back
- 38:57Speaker 2: from adversity and keep a team like Northwestern out of
- 38:59Speaker 2: the playoffs.
- 39:02Speaker 3: Who had that on their bingo card at the start
- 39:06Speaker 3: of the year? Number 20 Northwestern, a field goal underdog
- 39:10Speaker 3: in unranked Oregon.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Yes.
- 39:12Speaker 3: You talk about just the– If Northwestern wins this game.
- 39:18Speaker 1: They get Ohio State without saying, yes.
- 39:20Speaker 3: Are legitimately going to be in the conversation to kind
- 39:23Speaker 3: of sneak into that like number 12 spot for the
- 39:26Speaker 3: college football playoff because these teams in front of them
- 39:29Speaker 3: are going to lose games.
- 39:30Speaker 1: But we'll see.
- 39:31Speaker 3: Dante Moore going from an Oregon– And staying in college
- 39:35Speaker 3: to avoid maybe going to the Jets to maybe stay
- 39:38Speaker 3: in college now and still going to the Jets would
- 39:41Speaker 3: be like a curse for this guy. What did he
- 39:44Speaker 3: do to deserve this?
- 39:46Speaker 1: The Jets. I forgot I'm doing a show with Stu. Oh,
- 39:49Speaker 1: my God, the Jets. If only we had the time
- 39:52Speaker 1: to get this. Aaron Glenn outscored 107-6 in his 24
- 39:57Speaker 1: first halves. Listen to me.
- 39:58Speaker 2: I agreed to do this show to get my thoughts
- 40:00Speaker 2: and my mind away from the Jets, okay?
- 40:03Speaker 4: There's no need to bring it up.
- 40:05Speaker 1: I haven't seen Mikey A smile the entire day today.
- 40:08Speaker 1: I mean, come on.
- 40:10Speaker 3: I needed him to lose yesterday, and they did. The
- 40:12Speaker 3: first good thing the Jets have ever done for me
- 40:14Speaker 3: in my life.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Yes. Lose. Yes.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Wait, wait, hold on. You have the Chargers as the
- 40:20Speaker 2: last winless team in the NFL, right?
- 40:22Speaker 1: I did. Yes. What a great bet.
- 40:26Speaker 4: I texted Bear at like 4 o'clock, best bet of
- 40:29Speaker 4: the day, Rams.
- 40:30Speaker 1: That was it. That was it. No elaboration. I just
- 40:33Speaker 1: took it blindly. Thanks for the cover, bud. All right. Well,
- 40:38Speaker 1: that'll do it for today's show. Stu, I want to
- 40:40Speaker 1: put this in your ear, though. I want to put
- 40:42Speaker 1: this in your ear. Just like that, we may have
- 40:45Speaker 1: written off Lane Kiffin and LSU too early.
- 40:47Speaker 4: It's moderate.
- 40:48Speaker 1: We've got two weeks, okay? We've got a bye week
- 40:50Speaker 1: this weekend. Bama's got a bye. But in two weeks,
- 40:54Speaker 1: everything's going down at Baton Rouge, baby. Why are you
- 40:57Speaker 1: telling me that?
- 40:58Speaker 2: I'm the one who said on last week's second show,
- 41:02Speaker 2: I said that LSU was going to go into Auburn
- 41:04Speaker 2: and beat them the way they beat them because Lane
- 41:06Speaker 2: Kiffin wants to hold up. We beat the team that
- 41:09Speaker 2: beat Alabama, and they did.
- 41:10Speaker 1: Yes.
- 41:11Speaker 3: By the way, I don't know if you saw Big
- 41:12Speaker 3: Dune last week. We did our college football playoff selection draft.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Who would you be taking at this point to make
- 41:20Speaker 3: the college football playoff? I had pick number one, and
- 41:23Speaker 3: then I had pick the last pick, whatever it was.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Pick number one, obviously, was Miami. They're the biggest favorite
- 41:28Speaker 3: to get in.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:29Speaker 3: The very last pick of the draft, I took LSU.
- 41:32Speaker 3: I said, I think of all the two lost teams
- 41:34Speaker 3: out there, they are absolutely the most dangerous and have
- 41:37Speaker 3: the biggest upside, and I think they're a really good
- 41:39Speaker 3: bet to make the playoff right now. I think they
- 41:41Speaker 3: went out.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Sammy Leavitt coming alive. All right, guys, that'll do it.
- 41:45Speaker 1: This is the College Football Show with Stu Gautz and
- 41:47Speaker 1: the Bear. Like, subscribe, share it with your friends, your enemies,

- 41:55Speaker 1: next episode. You're in the college football show. It's you
- 41:57Speaker 1: got some bear. If I'll be back, you know, maybe
- 41:59Speaker 1: we'll see.
