- 0:05This is your daily message from Chad #1196 to upgrade your
- 0:09mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:12Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:15yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:17David Gonzalves. You can get a free copy of my
- 0:20book, The Most Powerful Story in the World by going to from

- 0:26and hundreds of others are always available at
- 0:27www.fromchad.com. Here's the upgrade You think
- 0:32focus means paying more attention.
- 0:35But upgraded thinking understands focus means paying
- 0:37attention to the right thing. Here's the story.
- 0:42Suppose you live in a big city like New York, Chicago, or Los
- 0:47Angeles. Maybe you visited or even lived
- 0:50in one of those cities. And suppose you drive a bus.
- 0:53Pulling up to the first stop, 10 people get on the bus.
- 0:56At the second stop, eight people get on.
- 0:58At the third stop, 6 people get on and two get off.
- 1:02OK, are you following this? There's one more stop, but pay
- 1:05close attention because I'm going to try to get you to focus
- 1:08on the wrong thing. At the fourth stop, four people
- 1:12get on and four get off. Now here's the question.
- 1:16How old is the bus driver? Maybe you were counting
- 1:18passengers 22, right? I actually gave you the answer
- 1:22at the beginning. You drive a bus.
- 1:25Do you know how old you are? Well, that's the answer.
- 1:27You are the bus driver. Most people miss it.
- 1:31Not because they weren't paying attention, they were paying
- 1:34close attention to the wrong thing.
- 1:37Losing focus on a silly Riddle cost you nothing.
- 1:40Losing focus on your life costs you a lot.
- 1:43Have you gotten focused on the wrong thing?
- 1:46Here's one thing you can start doing today.
- 1:49Stop focusing on results and start focusing on effort.
- 1:54Long before Diana Nyad swam from Cuba to Florida, she swam across
- 1:58Lake Ontario from north to South.
- 2:01She swam over 18 hours, hour after hour, in cold, dark water.
- 2:05Her mind started to drift. She knew swimmers who lost
- 2:08concentration and ended up swimming in tiny circles.
- 2:11So she stopped thinking about the far shore and started
- 2:14counting. She said, quote, if 600 strokes
- 2:17makes a mile, 1800 strokes makes 3 miles, And if singing row,
- 2:21row, row your boat completes 8 strokes, then 75 row, row, row
- 2:26your boats make a mile. I found that simple counting
- 2:30goals for each hour kept me close enough to total
- 2:33concentration that I could proceed indefinitely.
- 2:36She made it across. If you focus on results, you'll
- 2:40get stressed. If you focus on effort, you'll
- 2:44get results. Count the strokes you can
- 2:48control. Some people go go their whole
- 2:51lives counting passengers and never noticed they've been in
- 2:55the driver's seat the entire time.
- 2:58In a world of infinite distraction, focus can be your
- 3:01superpower. The better story to tell
- 3:03yourself is I'm the driver. I focus on my effort and the
- 3:08results will follow. Tell me a story of a time you
- 3:10were focused on the wrong thing to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:14Tell someone the bus driver Riddle and see if they get it
- 3:17today.
