Latest / Chief in Tech Deep Dive Shortcast / Chief in Tech S1E2 - Leveraging AI for Competitive Advantage: CTO Insights (Honeywell, Wayfair, Slalom)
Transcript
- 0:00OK, so you want to know how these top CTOs are using AI
- 0:04to get a leg up on the competition?
- 0:06Well, buckle up, because we're diving into this women tech
- 0:09panel discussion with Fiona Tan from Wayfair,
- 0:12Michelle Grover at Slalom, and Sheila Jordan over at Honeywell.
- 0:16And get this, they all agree that it
- 0:17starts with the customer.
- 0:19Yeah, what's so interesting is how they each
- 0:21approach customer experience.
- 0:23Like take Fiona Tan, for example.
- 0:25At Wayfair, she's tackling this unique challenge
- 0:28of selling furniture online.
- 0:29Which, let's be real, it's not as easy as ordering a book
- 0:32from Amazon.
- 0:32It's true.
- 0:33It's tough trying to put what you want in a sofa into words.
- 0:36It's like describing a dream.
- 0:38Totally.
- 0:38You just know it when you see it.
- 0:40Exactly.
- 0:41And Fiona nailed it when she said,
- 0:42it's hard to describe what you want.
- 0:45But here's the cool part.
- 0:46Wayfair is using AI to solve that.
- 0:48Imagine typing in blue sofa, right?
- 0:51But instead of getting this generic list,
- 0:53you get options that actually match your style.
- 0:56What?
- 0:57Really?
- 0:57Yeah.
- 0:58And maybe even your budget, like based on past purchases.
- 1:00It's like having a personal AI design consultant.
- 1:02OK, that's next level.
- 1:04But how does it even work?
- 1:05Is it reading our minds or something?
- 1:07Not quite mind reading.
- 1:09But AI is getting crazy good at understanding
- 1:12what customers want, even if they don't
- 1:15know the right words for it.
- 1:16Fiona was saying how search optimization has gone way
- 1:18beyond just basic keywords now.
- 1:20Oh, interesting.
- 1:21It's about intent.
- 1:22So you're searching blue sofa.
- 1:23AI might figure out you're actually looking
- 1:25for something modern, minimalist.
- 1:27For a small apartment.
- 1:29And then it shows you exactly that,
- 1:30even if you didn't type those words in.
- 1:32It's like having a conversation with the search bar.
- 1:34Totally.
- 1:34And then there's AI powered recommendations on top of that.
- 1:38Say you are looking at that blue sofa.
- 1:40AI can look at your past purchases,
- 1:42what you've clicked on, even how long you've
- 1:44looked at certain things, and then recommend other furniture
- 1:47that fits your style.
- 1:49And it's not just about how businesses are using AI
- 1:53to connect with us customers.
- 1:55They're using it behind the scenes too.
- 1:56Oh, absolutely.
- 1:57To totally change the way they operate.
- 1:59It's like giving every department a superpower.
- 2:01Yeah.
- 2:02Michelle Grover from Slalom had this great example.
- 2:04She was talking about how they're
- 2:06using AI for these internal processes, right?
- 2:09And get this.
- 2:10They actually try it out on their own teams first.
- 2:13Oh, interesting.
- 2:14Before even giving it to clients.
- 2:15So it's like they're perfecting the recipe in-house
- 2:18before they serve it up to their clients.
- 2:21Exactly.
- 2:21And she said one of the biggest areas
- 2:23is just automating all those repetitive tasks.
- 2:27That everybody hates.
- 2:28Think about being a lawyer having
- 2:30to go through pages and pages of contracts.
- 2:34Summarizing everything.
- 2:35Or a developer stuck analyzing lines of code.
- 2:38Hours.
- 2:39Yeah.
- 2:40AI can just knock those tasks out super fast.
- 2:42Huge time saver.
- 2:44Right.
- 2:44And what's interesting is how Michelle
- 2:45was talking about the effect on employees.
- 2:48When AI takes over those tasks, it frees them up
- 2:51to do more strategic work.
- 2:52More creative work.
- 2:53So it's a win-win.
- 2:54For everyone, it makes you wonder,
- 2:56what could you do if AI took over some
- 2:58of your more mundane tasks?
- 3:00Right.
- 3:01And this is just the beginning.
- 3:03Another area where AI is making a difference
- 3:06is in knowledge management.
- 3:07Michelle and Sheila Jordan from Honeywell both
- 3:09talked about this.
- 3:12Just think about all the times that you're at work searching
- 3:15for, like information.
- 3:16Oh, constantly.
- 3:17Right.
- 3:17Company policies, project details, technical specs.
- 3:21It never ends.
- 3:21Yeah.
- 3:22And it's always urgent when you need it.
- 3:24Of course.
- 3:24And AI can make it so easy to find what you need right
- 3:27when you need it.
- 3:29It's like having your own personal research assistant
- 3:32available 24-7.
- 3:33No more digging through endless files
- 3:35or sending those emails, like, does anyone know where to find?
- 3:38Right.
- 3:38I love that.
- 3:39It's a game changer.
- 3:40And then there's this whole world
- 3:41of predictive analytics.
- 3:44That's where things get really cool.
- 3:45No, tell me more.
- 3:46So companies are using it to forecast their sales,
- 3:50find new opportunities, even kind of predict
- 3:53risks before they happen.
- 3:55So it's not just about working faster.
- 3:56It's about working smarter.
- 3:58Exactly.
- 3:58Sheila had this amazing example.
- 4:00Honeywell is using AI to predict shipping delays.
- 4:04Wow.
- 4:04With like crazy accuracy.
- 4:06They're looking at weather patterns, historical data,
- 4:09even port congestion in real time.
- 4:12So they can see into the future almost.
- 4:14Yeah.
- 4:15And before we move on to the whole ethics side of things,
- 4:18maybe we can switch gears and talk about how companies are
- 4:21actually putting these AI solutions into practice.
- 4:24OK, so we've talked about all these amazing things
- 4:27AI can do for customer experience
- 4:29for internal operations.
- 4:30But where do you even start with implementing it?
- 4:33It seems like a huge undertaking.
- 4:35Totally.
- 4:36It can definitely feel overwhelming.
- 4:38But one thing all three CTOs agreed on
- 4:40was the importance of starting small.
- 4:43Sheila Jordan from Honeywell had this great analogy.
- 4:46She talked about finding those big bets in AI.
- 4:49Oh, I like that.
- 4:50Don't sweat the small stuff, those incremental improvements.
- 4:54Find those areas where AI can make a real difference
- 4:57for your business.
- 4:58And then really go for it.
- 4:59So it's about picking your battles,
- 5:01finding those high impact areas where AI can really shine.
- 5:04Exactly.
- 5:05And speaking of battles, they were all
- 5:06in agreement about one crucial thing for success.
- 5:11Data quality.
- 5:12Of course.
- 5:12Yeah.
- 5:13Fion Tan said it best.
- 5:14Feeding AI bad data is like teaching a chef
- 5:18with spoiled ingredients.
- 5:19You can't expect a Michelin star meal.
- 5:21It's true.
- 5:21Garbage in, garbage out, right?
- 5:22Exactly.
- 5:24And you need that good data to train effective AI models,
- 5:27obviously.
- 5:27And Fion has actually talked about how AI itself
- 5:31can help improve data quality.
- 5:32Wow, interesting.
- 5:33Yeah, it's like AI being a data detective,
- 5:35uncovering those inconsistencies, errors
- 5:38that you might not even know are there.
- 5:39So it's like AI is auditing itself in a way.
- 5:42Yeah.
- 5:43Making sure it has the best information to work with.
- 5:44To make those Michelin star meals.
- 5:46Exactly.
- 5:47Exactly.
- 5:47Now, of course, there's the question of,
- 5:49what about the humans in all of this?
- 5:51That's sad for sure.
- 5:52And all three CTOs were very clear.
- 5:56AI is about augmenting human capabilities, not replacing us.
- 6:00OK, good.
- 6:01It's about working together, collaborating.
- 6:04Michelle Grover, she really emphasized this.
- 6:06Upskilling and reskilling your workforce
- 6:08for this new AI-powered future.
- 6:11And it's not just tech skills either, by the way.
- 6:13Yeah, it makes sense.
- 6:14It's about critical thinking, problem solving.
- 6:16It's very typical.
- 6:16All those human skills that are going
- 6:18to be even more important as AI becomes more powerful.
- 6:20Because we're the ones who have to guide it and stuff.
- 6:22Right.
- 6:23We have to know how to use it effectively, ethically.
- 6:26So there's a lot of exciting opportunities on the horizon.
- 6:29And we've only just scratched the surface of what AI can do.
- 6:33But what really struck me was what
- 6:35Michelle said at the very end.
- 6:37She said, AI is going to amplify our capabilities,
- 6:40both good and bad.
- 6:41Oh, wow.
- 6:42It's a tool, right?
- 6:44And like any tool, it can be used to create or to destroy.
- 6:48So the question for all of us is,
- 6:50how are we going to use this powerful technology?
- 6:52What will we choose to build with it?
- 6:54It's a big question and a lot to think about.
- 6:56So for anyone listening, if this all
- 6:58sounds a little intimidating, don't worry.
- 7:01You don't have to become an AI expert overnight.
- 7:03But maybe start by asking yourself,
- 7:05what are some of those big bets in your own work or industry
- 7:09where AI could really make a difference?
- 7:10Because one thing's for sure, AI is here to stay.
- 7:14And it's only going to become more important in the years
- 7:16to come.
