- 3:00That makes me miss duck season. It does. I wasn't even there,
- 3:04but damn, that makes me miss it. Those were some good hunts that year. Yeah.
- 3:09Well, we're back. Episode 12 here. What are we?
- 3:13We're just going to share some hunting stories and just kind of bullshit our
- 3:17way through it. Not normal. We're missing someone, aren't we?
- 3:20You know, I don't. Yeah, I do think someone is feeling a little under the weather.
- 3:27Yeah, he tends to have that attitude about him. Yeah.
- 3:30But, hey, if you're going to party, you got to go all out. I guess.
- 3:34I guess. There's no in-between.
- 3:37All games. No breaks. Poor guy.
- 3:41Might as well full send it if you're going to do it. Yeah, I suppose.
- 3:45Well, there was no hunting to be discussed this past week. No.
- 3:50I think we've pretty much hung it up for the year. Yeah, after shooting 30 geese,
- 3:55that was my cue to just see ya. Yeah.
- 3:58Yeah, because you know if we would have went out again, And like this weekend,
- 4:01we'd have shot nothing and just been miserable.
- 4:03That or we'd have had to sit there all day and wait for him and been like,
- 4:07why the hell did we even do this? That was dumb.
- 4:10Yeah. I wanted to go, but there's no way I could go.
- 4:16Can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning. Well,
- 4:19it's a very valid point, but I'm kind of hurting from yesterday myself still.
- 4:24Yeah. Not feeling great. No.
- 4:26I woke up this morning. I'm like, that was terrible. Yeah.
- 4:30It was more staying up that late than the beer, I feel like.
- 4:35Yeah. I don't think I left until like 3 something. Yeah, 3.30, I think.
- 4:41I think I laid on the couch and I'm like, oh no, way too late.
- 4:47It happens. It always seems to be my house that does it too.
- 4:50Yeah, but nobody would leave. No. It's a party. Woo!
- 4:56Things were getting spicy too at the end of the night. Oh yeah, oh yeah.
- 5:01Well, let's just start with, what was one of your favorite hunts we had this year?
- 5:07I would say, I mean, it's hard to pick, really. That day we hunted in the snow was badass.
- 5:13That was a good day. And it was cool to hunt in that blizzard.
- 5:17Yeah, that was by far the heaviest snowfall that I had ever hunted in,
- 5:21especially on water. That was cool to see.
- 5:24I still think the day that I had the camera and we took that photo on the log,
- 5:29that was a pretty badass day.
- 5:31Was that the day that was just me and Austin? Yep. That's the hunt that I was going to pick. Yeah.
- 5:35That was fun. And we didn't see a ton of ducks. No.
- 5:40But the ducks we've seen came right in. Yeah.
- 5:44For me, since you picked my hunt, I would say, I think it was the day before
- 5:50or maybe the day before that when it was just me and Trevor the first day that
- 5:53I hunted in that hole. The day before.
- 5:55Yeah. me and him shot him up pretty good because I think the day before you
- 6:00went but then you had to work the next day and you couldn't go and you're like dang.
- 6:05But we just couldn't keep him off of us that day like it was every 10 minutes
- 6:11another group would come over the willows and they're like we're gonna do it
- 6:15yeah it was funny that day that I went.
- 6:18Just I mean as soon as that sun would pop out for the 5 minute intervals it
- 6:22would it was like they would just,
- 6:25Yeah, it's amazing the difference that sun makes. Yeah, it's huge.
- 6:30I mean, granted, we were kind of in a timber hole, but still,
- 6:33I mean, even when you're hunting open water, the difference of the way the ducks
- 6:37work, whether it's sunny or cloudy, is nuts. Yeah, it's night and day, legit.
- 6:42Especially if you can have that thing to your back. Yeah. Put yourself in the
- 6:45shadows, they lose sight of you, go.
- 6:48It's like goose hunting with no wind versus hunting with wind.
- 6:51Yeah. I hate goose hunting anyways. Same.
- 6:55Why the hell do we do it? I don't even know why I have a 24-foot trailer truck
- 6:59full of decoys because I really hate geese. Yeah, they're assholes.
- 7:03They tend to get the best of us a lot more than ducks do. Oh, for sure.
- 7:07We win on the ducks a lot more than we win on the geese. Well,
- 7:11you got to pass the time somehow.
- 7:12Yeah. And usually when duck season's over in Iowa here, I'm not ready to be done.
- 7:17Same. But then after the second goose hunt, I'm reminded why I hate goose hunting.
- 7:21And it's like, hmm, let's go home. Yeah, they're dickheads.
- 7:25I think one of my all-time favorite hunts is in that clip there.
- 7:32It was that day on the intro video, one of the main clips that was in there.
- 7:38There were seven or eight of us that day. I think it was seven,
- 7:41because I don't think McKenzie had showed up yet to do some pictures.
- 7:45But we just couldn't keep the ducks off of us.
- 7:49We worked thousands and thousands of ducks trying to find a pintail.
- 7:55Because we all had our five mallards and a pintail and Cody needed a pintail.
- 8:01And when you're talking about having 500 to a thousand mallards backpedaled
- 8:06in front of you, picking out a pintail is really hard. Yeah.
- 8:09So you don't, and also making sure you don't mess up and kill another one.
- 8:13That was, that was a blast though. You don't get to do that very often.
- 8:16And some people don't ever get to see that. Yeah.
- 8:19So that was definitely something cool to see.
- 8:23That is sweet. Especially, like you said, that number of ducks is, that's a lot.
- 8:28Yeah. No, it was, it's crazy is they were all coming off of a little bitty pond.
- 8:33Really? Yeah. Like, I mean, it was.
- 8:37I don't even know what to say the size of it, but I mean, it was maybe three
- 8:41acre pond at most, at most. I think it was probably closer to two.
- 8:46And those, you could walk across the pond and never touch water. It was nuts.
- 8:52And we hunted those same ducks, I think four days in a row and we beat on them all four days.
- 8:58We hunted that, we hunted one field twice. We hunted another field twice.
- 9:02I think in total, we only hunted three different spots up there and we were
- 9:05there for seven days hunting.
- 9:08It wasn't like that the last time you guys went I don't know what you're talking about,
- 9:13I didn't go to North Dakota this year I'm honestly glad I had to work that week
- 9:17it saved me the trouble it was still fun I mean we were able to get on birds
- 9:22we just weren't able to get on ducks we found the ducks the last day we were there,
- 9:28I still think as far as.
- 9:31Obviously as far as fun goes goose wars hunt was entertaining as hell The second
- 9:37one that comes to mind was that the day that you had to run to get batteries.
- 9:43Yeah, we didn't kill anything that day, did we? I know, but that was still one
- 9:46of the funniest days that we had all year long.
- 9:49The jokes and the roast were on a whole different level that day.
- 9:53At one point, I legit had tears coming out of my eyes. I was laughing so damn hard.
- 9:58I know we had John with us. Who all, me, you, John, Austin. Who was the other one? Curtis was there.
- 10:05So, Curtis. Yeah, that was...
- 10:08I don't think I ever stopped laughing. I mean, we got rained on.
- 10:11Yeah. We didn't kill any. Did we kill one? I don't think we killed anything.
- 10:15I don't know. I think we got scum. I know we had a big group of teal come ripping in.
- 10:19Yeah. Right as we were finishing setting up the boat. And we didn't even get a look at those.
- 10:24But no, that was definitely probably the funnest time. That was a good time.
- 10:27Yeah. That was hilarious.
- 10:29A lot of making fun of John. I'm glad it played out like that because I was
- 10:33so nervous when you got back with batteries. I was like, he's going to be so
- 10:37pissed off all day long. Well, we probably would have been okay.
- 10:41But it was one of those weekends where there was 30 plus boats out.
- 10:44I mean, there was trucks lined up down the street. Yep.
- 10:48And it's like, when I got back, I'm like, where are we going to go?
- 10:52Because there's not that many spots out here. And I don't want to be on top of somebody.
- 10:57Yeah, that was nuts. Like we pulled up and there was only one other truck,
- 11:00wasn't there? When we got there originally?
- 11:02Yeah, one or two, something like that. And we knew them though.
- 11:05We knew where they were going. Yeah.
- 11:06And then we legit unstrapped the boats. And next thing you know,
- 11:10the whole fucking road going down there is just lined up. And I was like, oh.
- 11:14Yeah. Then we looked like jackasses. Get going. And then I about wipe out into
- 11:18the trees because I lost the power of steering. And I couldn't turn that thing for anything.
- 11:23And we almost didn't get it started back up. No. Luckily, I had that jump pack with me.
- 11:29And we were able to barely get back to the ramp. Yeah.
- 11:32On the plus side, we did have a spare boat that we wouldn't have been stranded
- 11:36by any means. No, but it would have sucked. It would have.
- 11:39And what's wild about that weekend is it wasn't even the hunting sucked at that
- 11:44point in time, which it, I mean, it was early.
- 11:46I'm going to say it was, well, it had to be the first week in November because
- 11:49I think it was my first week home. First day out almost.
- 11:53Close to it. Yeah, it might have been the second weekend you were home.
- 11:58So that would have been, because I was home the last, like, Halloween weekend.
- 12:01Yep. And then I think it was the following weekend. Yeah.
- 12:05Because I don't feel like I got wet that day. I know the first weekend you were home, I got soaked.
- 12:10Yeah, it was a little windy that day and took a couple waves. It wasn't even that.
- 12:14It was, we hit the corner there and the water was low enough that your wake
- 12:18bounced off the willows.
- 12:19And yeah, I took a fucking monsoon over the nose of the boat.
- 12:23You got there and you were not happy.
- 12:26I'm not running this boat anymore. I hate it here. I think I threw a little
- 12:30fuel in the fire, too, and said, well, you just got to learn how to run it. Yep.
- 12:34Probably not the best thing to say at the time. It was funny.
- 12:38Looking back, it was funny. Yeah. I think the funniest thing was,
- 12:41like, I just, I hit that wave, and all I could see was stars in the sky, and I'm like, oh, shit.
- 12:48I'm in the air. Yeah, then I landed, and I had, like, water droplets running
- 12:53off my eyelashes and rolling right into my eye.
- 12:57So then I was pissed. That thing, I was like, yeah, fuck this.
- 13:02That thing got pinned, and I don't think it got un-pinned until we got to where
- 13:06we were going. I think when you got there, you told Austin that he's running the boat back.
- 13:09I did. I did. He's like, what?
- 13:12I'm not doing it. Because back then, he was a little nervous running that thing.
- 13:16He got a lot more comfortable as the season went on, which, like anything,
- 13:19if you have a little bit of time in the seat, you get used to it.
- 13:23But running a 115 tiller handle, not many guys do that.
- 13:26No so it's definitely from never really running a boat before yeah to run on
- 13:31a 115 it's a big step yeah and he he didn't crash he almost did one day so did
- 13:37i in your defense the headlights went out.
- 13:42Hello darkness my old friend dude the amount of panic i had when that happened
- 13:46just because i've said it on here before but that point is always super shallow
- 13:51yeah and all i saw was like that much of the grass sticking up and I was like oh god,
- 13:58yeah I made it up into the spot and I'm like god damn where the hell is Kate.
- 14:07Oh, I'm stuck. Help. I need somebody.
- 14:11It was funny because like I got the motor trimmed up and shut off before I even stopped.
- 14:16And then I like I went to move in the boat and the boat didn't move. And I was like, oh, shit.
- 14:22Not even kidding. I get out. Boat just goes.
- 14:25I'm like, oh, thank God. That was after I called you, though.
- 14:29Going to have to lay off some cheeseburgers, buddy. I know.
- 14:34Couldn't be the almost 900 pounds of decoys that are in that thing i don't know
- 14:38what you're talking about shit pile fucking shit those are all still in there
- 14:44too and they're probably going to stay in there all year long did you put them
- 14:47back in there oh yeah you took the decoys out yeah,
- 14:51what's in there nothing's in there right no the one one bluebell decoy is all that's in there,
- 14:56Oh, Lucky. Yeah. Love that decoy.
- 15:00If we were going to hunt water for goose wars, he was going out.
- 15:03Is that why you left him in the boat? Yep.
- 15:06Kind of like Kevin. When we're hunting the field, Kevin's got to go. Yeah, Kevin's got to go.
- 15:09Kevin's the Lucky Pintail. I should bring Kevin for the podcast when it's the
- 15:13off season, give him something to do.
- 15:15He probably gets tired of hanging out with all them goose decoys.
- 15:17We'll put him up there. Yeah, right. Let him have a second place trophy.
- 15:22At least you can see it this time. It's not hidden in the duck camp sign.
- 15:26And then Josh has to go and just throw salt on the wound as we're talking about it.
- 15:31Damn. Man, I hope you choke on it.
- 15:37Participation trophy. That's pretty much what it was. Yeah.
- 15:42Still a fun day. Oh, yeah, for sure. We did the best because we're the only
- 15:46team that killed a 10-man limit of geese.
- 15:48Suck it. We said it last week, but we brought over a third of the geese to the party. Yeah.
- 15:56It was wild.
- 15:59What is your all-time favorite hunt? Like of all the hunts you've been on.
- 16:04Dude, it's hard to put a finger on one. Like I've never had a day like you were
- 16:08talking about where it's just, I mean, you're beating mallards off your boot bag.
- 16:12Well, yeah, if you'd ever be able to get off work and go on a trip.
- 16:15Yeah, how'd that play out for you guys this year? Once again,
- 16:18we're not talking about it.
- 16:21I was a smart guy that stayed in work.
- 16:26I don't know. It's hard to put a finger on one specific one.
- 16:29I just love hunts that, like, obviously shooting birds is what we go to do.
- 16:34But the days, like, we were just talking about where we didn't shoot a goddamn
- 16:37thing, but we had a blast for the whole five or six hours we were out there.
- 16:42Yeah. That shit's fun. Those are hard to beat. I mean, killing a limit of mallards is a blast.
- 16:48That's what we're all out there to do. But at the same time,
- 16:51I'm content with just being out there as long as everybody's in a good mood
- 16:54and we're having a fun time laughing, joking, and roasting each other, you can't beat it.
- 17:00Yeah, I'd much rather do that than sit on the couch and watch TV. Depends.
- 17:06Depends on if it's raining or not. For some reason, I've been saying it for
- 17:10years, that I'm done hunting in the rain, and then what'd I do?
- 17:13I went and spent the money on a nice rain jacket so I could hunt in the rain
- 17:16like a retard. Yeah, that happens.
- 17:19I always ever accused me of being the brightest.
- 17:22Should have pulled a few bands off the lanyard.
- 17:26Yeah, but we would have had to not register him. He did. He did ask for certificates,
- 17:31proof of certificates, which we didn't have to show that because we only had
- 17:33one band and not enough points.
- 17:36Yeah. But. We were cooked. He did. Joey did check him. We'll see how everything plays out.
- 17:46Nah, those guys had a great hunt. Yeah. We just sucked out of that.
- 17:51Hunt in that area. I know we talked about it last week, too, but hunt in that area.
- 17:54I would have never guessed that we only killed one band. No.
- 17:57That we hunted. No. No shot.
- 17:59If it would have been October and we hunted that spot and shot 30 of them,
- 18:04we'd have shot like 28 bands. Yeah.
- 18:05At least 10. Yeah. And if we didn't, I would have just quit. Yeah.
- 18:10Because that, I mean, that's pretty much where they banned them at.
- 18:14A mile from there. Yeah. Yeah. Can't kill them all. We tried.
- 18:21You sure tried. Yeah.
- 18:24Put a pretty good dent in their population there. Yeah.
- 18:28That's all right. They'll make some more babies. Oh, yeah. For sure.
- 18:32Go walk around on the golf course.
- 18:34Get all fat and happy. Yeah. Yeah. Assholes.
- 18:37Find a field out there and I'll bring the snow spread for a weekend. Absolutely not.
- 18:42I'm not going snow goose hunting. Same. That is the worst timing for me. Yeah.
- 18:49I used to love snow goose hunting, and I still do, but man, whenever you got
- 18:54to walk shit in or it's just kind of like our last day goose hunting, it was so sloppy, muddy.
- 19:00Your boots weigh a hundred pounds. If you're, if you're not a layouts,
- 19:03like all of our layouts got to be pressure washed.
- 19:06Oh, for sure. Because they're wrecked. Yeah. Straight wrecked.
- 19:10Well, I think me and Austin were talking about that their day.
- 19:13It's like, yeah. We got to take all those to the car wash or get them out of
- 19:17the trailer this year and make sure we wash those out.
- 19:19Because they're also full of Little Debbie snacks and yours are full of,
- 19:22was it Reese's wrappers?
- 19:24Yeah, there was a Reese's wrapper. Yeah, no, I think there was a couple.
- 19:27I hunted out of your blind. There was... Potato, potato.
- 19:32Little Debbie and Reese's is thriving off a cade. Yeah, for sure.
- 19:40Yeah snow goose season I'm fortunate enough I have a guy Steve Stark he hunts
- 19:45down here quite a bit for snow goose season that the one that puts the spread
- 19:49out yeah so I'm lucky enough I mean,
- 19:52I usually don't have to go help him but if he's by himself he'll call me and
- 19:56say hey while it's frozen can you come out here and help me get my shit out
- 19:59and he's always nice enough to let me go if I ever get a free minute while trying
- 20:04to get race car shit ready,
- 20:06yeah that would be I mean it I'm not saying it's not fun to
- 20:08go do it it's just i don't for me personally i don't
- 20:11have the time to take off i take off too much time yeah to go
- 20:14chase stupid ducks yeah the way that
- 20:17he does it too with leaving that spread out in that field that's honestly the
- 20:21ideal way to do it obviously you're not going to shoot the amount of birds you
- 20:26would if you're chasing fields but yeah you definitely can't expect just to
- 20:29wreck them every day no whatever you're like you're gonna have probably more
- 20:32than likely you're gonna have a day or two that's just pretty good and the rest are gonna be,
- 20:35single digits or maybe a double digit day here and there.
- 20:39We only hunt usually three to four guys out there anyway, so it's not like we're,
- 20:43putting out massive numbers of snows.
- 20:46Well, we don't hold I mean, we get a fair amount of snows, but we don't hold
- 20:49them very long. I mean, they're here for a week, tops, and they're gone.
- 20:53And it also depends which jackass wants to go down there and blow the roost
- 20:57out, because it happens every year.
- 20:59I'll make sure, I hope I'm home at that time. I'll go down there and go do some
- 21:03donuts in the boat? Yeah, I'll make sure I hide the keys when you leave.
- 21:08I got extras in my truck. Shit. I'll hide the truck keys, too.
- 21:12I got an extra one of those, too. And I can start it from my phone.
- 21:16You can't drive it with your phone, though.
- 21:18No? No? There is a way. You call OnStar.
- 21:23I'm losing here. I'm cooked.
- 21:26Now, that was a Ford. I don't know if you can do it with the Fords,
- 21:28but GM with OnStar, I know you can have OnStar, or let you have access without
- 21:33the key. Really? Good to know.
- 21:37Don't ask me how I know. Speaking of that, one of my favorite pookie stories.
- 21:44I went and we were hunting down the big part of the lake.
- 21:49Well, my dumbass, I shouldn't even say my dumbass, it was my dog.
- 21:53But I had my keys sitting on the back seat. We go out to go hunt,
- 21:57dog gets out of the truck.
- 21:58I already had the truck locked because I thought the keys were in my pocket. Oh, no.
- 22:03Well, he kicked the keys into that little pocket in the back door.
- 22:09So I was cooked. Didn't have OnStar on my phone. So Austin was working that night, and I called him.
- 22:14And I'm like, hey, can you meet me out here and we'll get my keys out of my
- 22:18truck? Sure enough, get the truck unlocked.
- 22:21Five fucking minutes of that horn just blaring, and I could not find my keys, dude.
- 22:27So I'm like, I give up. Oh, you were probably pissed. Oh, I was super pissed.
- 22:31Then I opened the back door one last time and I kind of like flung the door
- 22:35open while my keys rattled in the door.
- 22:37And I'm like, how in the fuck did those get back there? Hank's just sitting there wagging his tail.
- 22:44No, he was home at that point. This was like nine o'clock at night. Oh, geez. Yeah.
- 22:50Dang did he so austin had
- 22:52one of those sticks or whatever yeah i didn't
- 22:55know the state patrol carried those that was when he was a sheriff
- 22:58still oh yep those
- 23:01guys carry them yeah i think it's i know city cops back home where i grew up
- 23:04used to have them i think our city cops do too yeah here it's really handy yeah
- 23:09i've locked myself out of a couple vehicles and it's like oh no it was so funny
- 23:14though because i'm like losing my shit looking for my keys and he's just sitting
- 23:17over there laughing at me.
- 23:19Dang, you just got called out? That was the exact day I was talking about, actually.
- 23:28Yep, we had to go back that night and get my keys. Then I shit you not,
- 23:32it was at least five minutes. It might have been closer to 10 that I tore that
- 23:35truck apart looking for my keys.
- 23:37Yeah. No, I can imagine. I can just see the anger in your face.
- 23:41Oh, dude, I was so pissed. Just throwing shit out of the truck? Yeah.
- 23:45And there wasn't really anything in my truck. Like I had taken all my hunting
- 23:48shit out because we were hunting.
- 23:52No, that's usually what I generally take my hunting stuff with me when I'm hunting
- 23:56too. Not always though. I have forgot stuff. Yeah.
- 23:59That is fair. I don't think this year though I had to come back for anything.
- 24:03No, we did pretty good this year. Yeah. Normally it's either me or you that
- 24:06forget something. Yeah. No, I usually just forget the breakfast.
- 24:09Yeah. That has happened a few times and there's a lot of angry faces looking
- 24:13at me in the boat on those days.
- 24:15You forgot. What? At least you didn't
- 24:18bring breakfast and not look at the package. See that you need eggs.
- 24:22Yeah, dude, that guy's never going to live that.
- 24:26I wonder if he's even awake yet watching this, but... I doubt it. Probably not.
- 24:30I doubt it. That guy's just being a bum. See if he opened my snap yet.
- 24:35I know he's got to work tonight, so... Yeah.
- 24:37He's probably resting up. He has not opened my snap.
- 24:40Dang, that dude's cooked. He's cooked. Yeah.
- 24:44Too many beers. It'll happen. Thank you.
- 24:47Yeah, going back to the hunting stories, years ago, and I can't remember how
- 24:54long ago it was, over 10 years ago, our lake back home flooded real bad.
- 24:59And we were hunting in one of the state parks, one of the parks there.
- 25:06And we didn't get black ducks down there. But that week, we were killing three
- 25:12or four black ducks every day. Damn.
- 25:15It was that year was unreal the
- 25:18ducks we have and i that's crazy to me on flood
- 25:21years like we had that flood year here seven eight years ago how
- 25:25them ducks find that yeah and like that the
- 25:28year last time we had the big flood we didn't have like cold weather no like
- 25:32it was it got cold eventually but we didn't have any cold weather and them ducks
- 25:35just showed up yeah so like they must just get up when they get up there on
- 25:38their migration they just say whoa what is that over there and they didn't show
- 25:43up by the thousands. They showed up by the fucking millions.
- 25:47Somebody told me a while back that they legit estimated there to be a million
- 25:50ducks in Des Moines River Valley. Yeah. I would not doubt it one bit.
- 25:54And it was over, like, well over a million. Yeah.
- 25:57Which is, I definitely believe it too, because you could go hunt anywhere you
- 26:01wanted and you were going to kill your ducks. Yeah. I remember the day,
- 26:05It was like the day after they showed up because they showed up overnight.
- 26:08Yeah, because I was killing teal at first. Yeah.
- 26:11Went out and scouted like normal, you know.
- 26:14Went out the next day and I'm like, whoa, where the hell did that come from?
- 26:19Like it was just waves of ducks.
- 26:21Mm-hmm. And they didn't leave. No. I mean, they were here all year.
- 26:25Yeah. Because even when the water started coming down, they just moved out to
- 26:27the lake. Mm-hmm. And I went out there and we were beating them up.
- 26:30Yeah. That was another fun day.
- 26:32My buddy Jared and I had my buddy Jared and Zach with me, but that was the year
- 26:36I moved here, so I didn't know anybody then. I just met them that year too.
- 26:40And I was like, hey, I found a spot that's loaded up, you know,
- 26:44like there was a ton of ducks and there was some geese there too.
- 26:48I was like, you guys want to go?
- 26:50Yeah, yeah. How long the boat ride is? I'm like, oh, just short boat ride.
- 26:55Five minute boat ride, your boat. It is a long boat ride.
- 26:59But as they're coming across the mile long, Jared is a little nervous going
- 27:03across big water at night.
- 27:05So they're coming across the mile-long dam in their pickup.
- 27:09And Zach's like, look at that, Jared. We got to go across those big waves.
- 27:13And he's like, oh, whatever. Because
- 27:14neither one of them knew that we were going across the lake. Right.
- 27:17So we get to the boat ramp or the gravel road because there was not a boat ramp available back then.
- 27:23We get to the road, get the boat launched. I come out of that cove and I just
- 27:26go straight across the lake.
- 27:28We get like maybe halfway across it. And Jared's like, just,
- 27:32just turn around, take me back because it was bad.
- 27:35Every wave we hit that nose of that boat just ate it and then the lights would
- 27:39turn off. So we're in the dark and then we hit the next wave, lights back on.
- 27:45Jared is in the bottom of the boat, basically in tears, just scared for his
- 27:48life. He had his dog grizzly too. And his dog was even hiding underneath him.
- 27:54I had a layout. We had layout blinds piled up on the front of the boat.
- 27:58Zach's layout blind ripped out.
- 28:00About took me out, out of the back of the boat.
- 28:03I turned around to go get that thing, and they both just started yelling at
- 28:06me, just leave it, just leave it. And I was like, no, I'm going to try to find that thing.
- 28:10Terrible idea. Did not find it. I got soaked.
- 28:13Finally make it across the other side of the lake. We stopped in a little cutout,
- 28:18get out of the waves. I couldn't open my jacket.
- 28:21Froze? Yeah. I was trying to smoke a cigarette.
- 28:25Because dealing with those two people crying in the bottom of the boat the whole time was ridiculous.
- 28:29And finally get unthawed, and I was like, all right, let's go.
- 28:33Let's get... We only got another, like, two miles to go. Like, it's not much farther.
- 28:37I take off, get back out there in the waves, and then Zach's all scared,
- 28:40and Jared's fine. I was like, all right, guys, we got to figure this out.
- 28:45But we get there, and we get set up. That whole cove froze over,
- 28:48so that kind of sucked. It was like... I mean, it was single digits. Yeah. It was like...
- 28:53Smashed our ducks. No, we smashed our geese.
- 28:57We ended up being like one or two shy on ducks, which was surprising.
- 29:01I did not expect the goose thing to happen as well as it did, but it worked out.
- 29:06That was a good time. Yeah.
- 29:09Listen to those guys cry in the bottom of the boat. Take me back.
- 29:12Take me back. I'm done. I'm done.
- 29:15Let me tell you something. Let's get ready to say it.
- 29:20Oh, shit. They were a lot more comfortable in the boat ride back,
- 29:24though. I bet. Yeah, no. When they could see what was going on.
- 29:26Yeah, yeah. And they knew they probably weren't going to die.
- 29:29Yeah. The waves had died down a little bit, too.
- 29:31I mean, they were, Jared was still nervous. He was like, I'll call somebody,
- 29:35have them come pick us up on this side, and we can go get your truck.
- 29:37And he's like, nah, dude, we'll be just fine getting across that lake.
- 29:42Unless something real bad happens. Yeah, like lower unit shits out.
- 29:46We still would have made it to the mile-long bridge.
- 29:51We launched in painted rocks there's no way we'd have made it back to painted
- 29:53rocks it was a northwest wind and it was like a 30 or 40 mile an hour northwest
- 30:00wind and that lake was high nice,
- 30:04those are probably the biggest waves I've ever seen out there on that lake,
- 30:07that was another cool day your lower unit shit out just sitting out in the middle
- 30:10of absolutely nothing I think our definitions of cool are a little different
- 30:15I mean it was a cool day until we were going back to the boat ramp Oh, yeah.
- 30:19No, like you're meeting the hunt. Yeah, the hunt was cool. Okay,
- 30:21yeah. I could agree with that. The end of the day sucked.
- 30:25All smiles until lower unit left the chat.
- 30:31Oh, that was interesting. I knew it was, I could, because when you're running
- 30:35back, I'm like, man, it's like bogging down.
- 30:38Yeah. Like those bearings started welding themselves up and all of a sudden
- 30:43they just locked up and killed the motor.
- 30:45I'm like, hmm, not good.
- 30:48Went to start it, didn't even attempt, just went no flick. I'm like, beep.
- 30:53We're going to need a tow. and then
- 30:56we got towed directly into the dock yeah mock jesus
- 30:59oh man i almost broke my arms
- 31:02that day trying to stop us and i was like whoop this is a bad idea i was
- 31:06ticked yeah that was not good i went back i think i came home from texas just
- 31:11to go hunting that day yeah you did and then i went back to work that day just
- 31:15madder than a rattlesnake and i ordered a found a lower unit on eBay and had
- 31:20it there for the next opener. I think it was home second opener.
- 31:24I remember I had to take your shit one up to Tracker to see if they could fix it.
- 31:30I remember that phone call. Hey, I gotta order another one. I was like, fuck!
- 31:37Lower unit left the chat.
- 31:41That thing's still in your shop, isn't it? Yeah. No, it is. What are you doing with that?
- 31:47My plan was to just Just break open the case. See what was in there.
- 31:51Get parts out of there that were still good. Yeah.
- 31:54It's been sitting there now for like three years, three, four years, whatever it's been.
- 31:57I think when you get your shop built, you should just put it up on the wall
- 31:59as like a little Hall of Fame piece. Actually, it might not be a bad idea.
- 32:06Hall of Shame. Hopefully, the wall anchors go better than ours did yesterday. Yeah, no, that was...
- 32:12If you guys see this sign just kick over sideways, mind your business. Yeah.
- 32:16Because that thing at any point in time could just say, I think the problem
- 32:20was I tried to put that one that was already screwed up in there.
- 32:23And then that just like, it never grabbed the wall. And it just started eating
- 32:28through it. And then that one just kept eating through it.
- 32:31Yeah. I seen that thing spin. I'm like, ooh, not good. Not good.
- 32:36This dude is cooked. Yeah. Time for some plaster.
- 32:42Duck. It fixes everything. Yeah, that's a fair point. Could just put like a
- 32:46little dowel rod in there. Right. I don't see the problem with it. Yeah.
- 32:51What, so what are some of your off-season plans this year? Obviously.
- 32:54Reese car, go fast. Yeah, I don't know what you're talking about off-season plans.
- 32:58We don't have an off-season. We have work season and we have,
- 33:02oh shit, we're hunting in two days. Yeah.
- 33:07Know i think i feel like i did a decent job this year getting ready for hunting
- 33:10season yeah for sure for as crazy as it was with having that wedding
- 33:13and i think something else yeah we had
- 33:16everything mostly ready for it yeah off
- 33:19season for us is just a show we're both
- 33:23working a lot i got race car going on yeah this garage is getting ready to be
- 33:27a mess and it's not gonna be a mess it's gonna be a organized chaos yeah honestly
- 33:33though i don't think like the way i'm gonna do it this time it won't be bad
- 33:36yeah before it was a shit show there was just shit everywhere,
- 33:42i mean it will be nice having your stuff at home yeah it'd be nice to walk outside and not,
- 33:47care how long i spend in here really yeah instead of i
- 33:50mean the shop you guys had was only what 10 minutes away
- 33:53from here yeah 15 that still wasn't bad
- 33:55but that's 30 minutes of driving every day just to
- 33:58go there and back that and like even being
- 34:0115 minutes away if i go to the shop i can't just
- 34:04be there for like a half hour or an hour like it's a four hour event every time
- 34:09i go there right that was the worst part is like i would have the race car shit
- 34:13done but i would have to go to the shop to do like little button-up shit yeah
- 34:17just get it get it ready to go and then it's like well i'm already here i might
- 34:21as well clean the shop or something while while i'm at,
- 34:25so it was legit every day at least four hours.
- 34:29And that shit gets old quick. I can imagine.
- 34:33I don't know why that camera does that. I'll have to look into that.
- 34:36Yeah, it went kind of dark there for a second. I almost went and wiggled the
- 34:40mouse because I thought the computer was turning off.
- 34:43There's got to be like auto exposure or something. We'll have to mess with it.
- 34:50It looked like somebody turned the lights off. Yeah, no. I kind of looked around
- 34:54too. I'm like, is somebody coming in?
- 34:55I didn't hear the foam slam on the ceiling. I need to get that fixed.
- 35:02I got a busy off season two of
- 35:05being homeless yeah i could be homeless here in the next
- 35:08week and a half two weeks yeah it's exciting but i'm ready for the process to
- 35:13be over with i'm ready to have this shop built and be done with it yeah it'd
- 35:18be nice when it's done it's kind of like i was saying like all week about cleaning
- 35:22this place out like the shit sucks but It'll be nice when it's done. Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:28It's already been a fiasco now,
- 35:31but it is what it is. We'll get through it and hopefully have it done.
- 35:37Hopefully it's done enough for hunting season.
- 35:41I mean, I don't think it'll be completely done by then.
- 35:44That's going to be, they'd have to hoof it to get it done by then.
- 35:46Because realistically, we're not going to start on until April, best case.
- 35:51Maybe not until May. I got to find the property still.
- 35:54I mean might not find property until maybe even start buying yeah,
- 35:59that'll suck that sounds like such a shit show I'm glad I'm not doing that right
- 36:03now you will one of these days I know yeah I know well the good news is I'll
- 36:08have experience going through it so I can tell you what not to do and what to do yeah.
- 36:13Or what to expect at least yeah by the way this part's gonna take way longer
- 36:17than you thought yeah yeah and don't do this yeah whatever you do don't do that Yeah.
- 36:25Yeah, I don't quite know what to expect for next year. I'd love to say that
- 36:29I hope it's better than this year, but I'm not even going to get my hopes up for that.
- 36:34For hunting season? Yeah. What fucking weather?
- 36:38Well, the one thing we have going
- 36:40for us this year is the prairie pothole region is doing better. Yeah.
- 36:44Even in Canada, like Western Canada, where they've had the wildfires and been pretty dry.
- 36:48They've gotten a decent amount of snow and precipitation towards the coming of the fall.
- 36:54So hopefully hopefully the ducks get back up there and it does get cold on them
- 36:59when they get back up there and they have a good hatch we need a good hatch
- 37:03our numbers are doing terrible,
- 37:05and I don't look to see us keep doing this 60 and 6,
- 37:10much longer if we do with the numbers and the way they're declining I mean what
- 37:15is it Pintail had a jump last year and then maybe Blue Wing Teal or was it Green Wing Teal,
- 37:21Green Wings but everything else was breaking
- 37:24even or doing way worse from the long-term average
- 37:27so we definitely need a good hatch the poor honkers are going to get a fucking
- 37:32beating on their numbers this year oh yeah the i've thought about that during
- 37:36goose season when we're hunting and seeing all the the coronavirus patients
- 37:41out there it's that'll be interesting to see yeah what's actually left of those guys yeah.
- 37:48A lot of geese hanging around, hanging around here just because they got left behind. Yep.
- 37:52We've said it before, but that shit sucks, dude. Right. No, it's no good for anybody. No.
- 37:59What does work? Well, I'm busy.
- 38:02What time are you coming back? Now that you called me? Never.
- 38:05Yeah. I'm not coming home. I'm going out for milk.
- 38:11And I'm never coming back. Oh, shit.
- 38:15We are We're kind of talking about doing some trailer upgrades.
- 38:20Yeah. If we find the time, obviously. I would love to get that done.
- 38:24I just don't know when that's going to get done or where.
- 38:26That could be something too. Like we don't use the trailer a whole lot early season.
- 38:31No. And typically we hunt the morning because the afternoon is dog shit.
- 38:34Right. So we could always hunt mornings and work on that in the afternoon.
- 38:38Yeah. No. I don't think it'd take that long.
- 38:41No. I mean, I'd like to get another solar panel for it. That way we can put
- 38:46at least two batteries, but probably three for having the inverter and everything.
- 38:52But no, that thing will be sick if we get it done.
- 38:56Not so much for hunting around here, but when we go out of state hunting,
- 38:59it'll be the cat's ass. Yeah, for sure.
- 39:04It's just, I've been talking about it for a long time and I haven't done it
- 39:06yet. Well, it seems like he got Pookie all fired up about it,
- 39:09so maybe he'll, that'll be his contribution.
- 39:12Getting that all organized. He can't even show up for a podcast.
- 39:14You think he's going to work on a trailer? You make a fair point.
- 39:20Poor guy. Yeah. Poor, poor guy. Dumber than fuck, but... Nice guy.
- 39:31What do we got coming up here? Anything? No banquets, no nothing,
- 39:36really, right away, do we? No. No, we got some time before those.
- 39:39I am looking forward to the Delta Expo being here. Yeah.
- 39:42Hopefully, you can make it down at least one day while it's here.
- 39:45I know you'll be racing that weekend, but it's, I mean, I think I heard it's
- 39:50going to be in Des Moines and then Kansas City and then come back to Des Moines
- 39:53the third year. I heard that same thing.
- 39:55But I haven't seen Delta release any info on that.
- 39:59But that'll be cool I've never been to one I've heard they're a good time but
- 40:02then I've also heard they kind of suck yeah so I'd like to just see it for myself
- 40:05and I'd rather see it for myself while it's here than have to drive 8 hours to go see it yeah,
- 40:13but like I'd like to go to a few more shows this year too like I want to go
- 40:16to Game Fair yeah that'd be sick and I think Game Fair is after race season it's over so it'd be,
- 40:21it's not till the end of August really yeah we could make it I want to say it's
- 40:27the end of August It's for two weeks too.
- 40:29So even if it was like your championship race weekend and then it might be the next weekend too.
- 40:34Be fun to go do that because there is anybody and everybody that is involved
- 40:39in the waterfowl industries there. Yeah.
- 40:42I've always heard really good things about that one. Yeah. Oh, it's a freaking party.
- 40:48I've heard that too. A lot of people bring their campers up there and it's a
- 40:52rager all night long and they get up and do it again.
- 40:54I'm like, oh, that sounds terrible. Yeah, count me out on that.
- 40:57The ragers i mean we'll drink some beers but i'm not doing that shit for multiple
- 41:01days in a row i'm getting too old for that i can't imagine how you would feel grandpa.
- 41:09As soon as you said i can't imagine how you'd feel like all right here we go,
- 41:13i'm cooked again it happens what the,
- 41:19anybody that's watching i mean if you guys got if you guys want to share
- 41:22anything that you got planned or ideas or shows that you think we should maybe
- 41:27think about coming to or anywhere you'd like to see us shoot us a message or
- 41:31or drop a comment here and i mean we you never know um we're gonna be probably
- 41:37i know i'll probably be at the isc banquet i don't think you'll be able to be there,
- 41:43and then we got the Delta banquet here in town that we should all be at because
- 41:49you're off that weekend yep,
- 41:53it's odd how that worked out too as soon as I seen the date I'm like I'm pretty
- 41:57sure K's not racing that weekend,
- 41:59I got on the schedule and looked it up and I'm like nope he's not 410's only
- 42:03that day yeah I think we race, we do race that Friday yeah you race Friday night,
- 42:08I forget what event it was but I think that's the USAC weekend could be yeah
- 42:15I think you're right yeah because that's the only weekend that we race Friday
- 42:18and the wing 410s race Saturday yeah,
- 42:22I think I was home that weekend this year too yeah I can't remember.
- 42:30I'm kind of excited for the coming episodes we have cooking up shit's gonna
- 42:36get interesting the flooded crops the whole flooded corn thing that is going on right now is wild.
- 42:44It has sparked a war on Facebook. Yeah.
- 42:50You got the cornies and you got the non-cornies. The cornies.
- 42:53So everybody's calling them cornies.
- 42:55Jesus. Can't kill your ducks without your corn, cornies.
- 42:59Yeah. I mean, it goes pretty good. It does. Yeah.
- 43:02It does. They are, as soon as you call them a corny, they freak out.
- 43:05Oh, I'm sure. Yeah. No, they get their popcorn and they leave.
- 43:07Popcorn a lot of corn yeah it's corn yeah.
- 43:15That video cracks me up still. Oh, yeah. It's cool.
- 43:20But no, we got that one. And then what was the, we're going to have,
- 43:25I think we're going to do one with the ISC at some point here,
- 43:29about the waterfowl meetings with the DNR this summer that we're going to need
- 43:34everybody that listens in here in Iowa.
- 43:38We will need your help going to these meetings and showing your support and
- 43:42voicing your opinion on whether you are for this or not for changing the zones,
- 43:47just to kind of split up the two largest man-made lakes in Iowa that are right
- 43:51next to each other and in the same zone.
- 43:53And it's a pretty minute change, but I think it's possible.
- 43:58Everybody's got to show their support one way or the other. It don't matter.
- 44:01I mean, if you don't agree with it, that's fine. Everybody has their own opinion.
- 44:05Yeah, and like we were kind of talking in that group chat, I've never personally
- 44:09seen the info for the dates and stuff like that.
- 44:13So I'm going to make a little graphic with, with all the dates on it and,
- 44:17and locations and we'll, uh, we'll blast that and hopefully people show up.
- 44:21Yeah. I know it's, I've seen it posted normally in Iowa water followers.
- 44:25What's his name? Bill Smith. Yeah. He usually pretty good at posting that stuff.
- 44:30Cause that guy's, that guy's a go getter.
- 44:32Yeah. He gets stuff done and he knows how to work with the DNR too.
- 44:35He gets, he's made a lot of progress and change through the years and not just
- 44:39in Iowa. He works a lot in Illinois too. Yeah. That's where he's originally from too. Mm-hmm.
- 44:43But, yeah, between those two, I mean, the flooded corn debacle is going to be,
- 44:49we're going to talk about that a lot this offseason because there's a lot of
- 44:51change coming this year with all of that. It's going to be interesting to hear everybody's take on it.
- 44:56Yeah, and obviously that doesn't, I mean, there's arguments behind it,
- 45:00but that doesn't directly affect us.
- 45:02Like we were saying yesterday, there's not enough flooded corn in Iowa for it
- 45:05to really change anything for us.
- 45:08I don't know if there's any along the Mississippi or the Missouri River anymore.
- 45:13In Iowa, but the only flooded corn that I know for sure there is still is in
- 45:17Riverton. And there's not much there.
- 45:20I think that's regulated too, where they can only plant so much a year.
- 45:23And I'm not, I don't know 100% on that. I don't know all the details,
- 45:26but it's definitely a lot less than some of our neighbor states,
- 45:31like Illinois and Missouri.
- 45:32Those two states have a ton flooded corn.
- 45:38Yeah, but it's, like you said, it's a big, big topic. We'll be touching on it
- 45:42quite a bit as that goes through.
- 45:44Yep, yeah. And that, like I said, next week should be our intro for that.
- 45:49And hopefully some of our listeners here can voice their opinions on that or
- 45:52give us things they'd like us to discuss on next week's episode.
- 45:57But it should be a good one. Yeah, I feel like we'll have a pretty good list of shit to talk about.
- 46:02And then I feel like the comments are going to pop off on that one.
- 46:05Oh, that one. That's going to be nuts. That one should get Western.
- 46:07Hopefully Pookie's here for that one. Yeah. Frickin' guy.
- 46:15But, no. Yeah, so that should be fun. And then we'll have lots of stuff to talk
- 46:18about this summer because I do think there's a lot of change coming for our
- 46:23waterfowl seasons. Yeah, for sure.
- 46:25And limits. And I don't know what's all going to change or if anything's going
- 46:29to change, but there's going to be a lot of debates and a lot of shit going
- 46:33on in the government with it. Yeah.
- 46:35I mean, that letter that Kennedy put out and mailed off to the,
- 46:39what is it, the head of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service?
- 46:43Yes. That letter he sent out really, really ruffled some feathers.
- 46:50But he's, that guy, Kennedy's a waterfowl hunter just like the rest of us.
- 46:54Yeah. The dude just loves to go out and be out there. Yep.
- 46:57I know people personally that have hunted with him and said he's just a blast to hunt with.
- 47:01We'll see. See how everything plays out. Shit's going to get Western.
- 47:04I look forward to it. I'm always up for a strong debate. Oh, yeah. This shit's fun.
- 47:09But, I mean, I think that pretty much wraps us up for this week's episode.
- 47:14I mean, you got anything to add while we're closing this down here?
- 47:19Not really. No? We kind of went through what hunts we liked,
- 47:23and I didn't really have any that I absolutely fucking hated this year, which was different.
- 47:29I mean, normally we have that one or two days that really piss you off,
- 47:33but yeah no I get that we didn't really have that this year I didn't feel like.
- 47:39The shit days we had made up for it with comradery.
- 47:44We did. We did make up for the bad days. Good stuff.
- 47:49What is going on here? I don't know. You got cooking. I don't know.
- 47:52I'm trying to play the music here. Yeah, play it for a second.
- 47:59Oh, it's back. All right. Well, you know what? We'll just leave it there. It's working.
