- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, The Truth about Sorority Life with
- 0:04Speaker 1: your hosts me Gia Judice, Davey Kent, and Jennifer Kessler.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Welcome to another episode of Dirty Rush. The boys are
- 0:17Speaker 2: taking over today. We're your hosts. I'm Ben Higgins.
- 0:21Speaker 3: And I'm Bob Giddy.
- 0:24Speaker 2: We're giving you the male take on sororities and trying
- 0:28Speaker 2: not to get ourselves in too much trouble. Honestly, we
- 0:32Speaker 2: will not just part of life. We're going to take
- 0:34Speaker 2: a few callers from you listeners out there on your
- 0:39Speaker 2: opinions on sororities from a male perspective. So let's just
- 0:43Speaker 2: dive in. Bob, we're obviously hosting this today. You and
- 0:48Speaker 2: I both have a background in Greek life. Well, for me,
- 0:53Speaker 2: I'll explain that mine wasn't a long or very deep
- 0:57Speaker 2: background in Greek life. However I have, I've been around
- 1:01Speaker 2: my fair share of sororities, and I have been to college,
- 1:05Speaker 2: and so I know what we're talking about today. But Bob,
- 1:08Speaker 2: I think you're out of the two of us, the
- 1:10Speaker 2: expert in Greek life. Give us your background, your resume,
- 1:15Speaker 2: and why you know you were hired on to be
- 1:18Speaker 2: the co host today.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Yes, well, thank you for having me here today, Benjamin,
- 1:23Speaker 1: and for inviting me to be a part of this
- 1:25Speaker 1: illustrious show and this panel of guests that will be
- 1:28Speaker 1: coming along today.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Yeah. So I was I went to Michigan State University.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I was on a football team at Michigan State, and
- 1:36Speaker 1: I will tell you that I had a bunch of
- 1:38Speaker 1: buddies that were in a fraternity, the Ato House at
- 1:41Speaker 1: Michigan State. And the Atos were a pretty pretty cool
- 1:47Speaker 1: group of dudes, a lot of athletes, a lot of
- 1:49Speaker 1: cool party guys, a lot of face guys, as they
- 1:52Speaker 1: said at the time.
- 1:54Speaker 3: And I decided that that sounded like fun.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Another guy in the football team, who was one of
- 2:01Speaker 1: our middle linebackers, was on the was in this fraternity,
- 2:03Speaker 1: and he's like, trust me, I got you.
- 2:05Speaker 3: You have a great experience, will have fun. And I did.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I rushed the house and as a result of that,
- 2:12Speaker 1: I brought in or brought around several of my buddies
- 2:16Speaker 1: who you know, we went there together. Some of us
- 2:19Speaker 1: went there together, and then some of us came in later.
- 2:22Speaker 1: But I'm from an area in the Detroit area called
- 2:24Speaker 1: the Downriver area, and we formed the Downriver six Pack,
- 2:29Speaker 1: which was six of us from the same area in
- 2:31Speaker 1: the same fraternity, and I think of us, four of
- 2:34Speaker 1: us went through Rush together, maybe three of us, and
- 2:38Speaker 1: then the others came through after.
- 2:40Speaker 3: But it was it was pretty cool, man.
- 2:42Speaker 1: We had a really great time, and it made a
- 2:44Speaker 1: very large university, Michigan State University for me as a
- 2:47Speaker 1: result of going, you know, going there and being on
- 2:49Speaker 1: the football team that made it a whole lot smaller,
- 2:51Speaker 1: and then being a part of the fraternity system there
- 2:54Speaker 1: made it even smaller. So I never felt like Michigan
- 2:57Speaker 1: State was an enormous place. In fact, I felt like
- 2:59Speaker 1: it was that much bigger than my hometown because I
- 3:02Speaker 1: felt like I literally knew everybody.
- 3:04Speaker 3: So it was awesome.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Well, one thing I need you to do as we
- 3:07Speaker 2: prepare for the callers that we're going to take listeners
- 3:10Speaker 2: to the Dirty Rush podcast that you're gonna be calling
- 3:13Speaker 2: in here to talk about some of the topics that
- 3:16Speaker 2: we're going to be discussing. Just between you and I
- 3:18Speaker 2: here to get us going, I want you to start
- 3:21Speaker 2: thinking about, yes, your time and the fraternity, but also
- 3:24Speaker 2: your relationship to the sororities. I don't know if you
- 3:29Speaker 2: had much of an interest in sororities when you were
- 3:32Speaker 2: at Michigan State.
- 3:34Speaker 4: But if you did, I had.
- 3:36Speaker 1: A strong interest in them. I'd say strong, too, fiercely strong.
- 3:43Speaker 2: He Bob is a historical genius when it comes to yes,
- 3:50Speaker 2: sororities in the history, what they care about, and who
- 3:53Speaker 2: they are.
- 3:54Speaker 3: You know.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I went to Indiana University, a fellow ten school, an amazingution.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I went to Indiana and was very excited about being
- 4:04Speaker 2: a part of Greek life. I went there having great
- 4:08Speaker 2: friendships from home, but also wanting to build new friendships.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I kind of had this voyager mentality where I was
- 4:15Speaker 2: an only child from More Sandy and I wanted to
- 4:17Speaker 2: spread my wings, and so I joined. I think of
- 4:20Speaker 2: fraternity for all the wrong reasons. Not because I necessarily
- 4:24Speaker 2: liked the guys that were part of the house, and
- 4:27Speaker 2: not because I necessarily liked the house itself. It was
- 4:30Speaker 2: because it was the coolest house on campus. It was
- 4:32Speaker 2: the one that everybody wanted to go to. It had
- 4:36Speaker 2: the best party room, which looking back, it was a
- 4:39Speaker 2: very naive decision for me because I've never been a
- 4:42Speaker 2: huge partier. It's not like something that I get jazzed about.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And so the fact that I joined a house that
- 4:48Speaker 2: only partied. Really was a mistake of me of mine.
- 4:53Speaker 2: I joined it with one of my best friends in
- 4:54Speaker 2: the world who went through RUSH, and I never fully
- 4:57Speaker 2: completed it for a few reasons. It was a twenty
- 5:01Speaker 2: eight week long pledgeship, so it took up the whole year,
- 5:06Speaker 2: which was exhausting to be which is crazy to think that,
- 5:09Speaker 2: you know, college is four years and you're going to
- 5:11Speaker 2: spend so much time of it. Kind of being you know,
- 5:14Speaker 2: kicked around as a pledge their ploodship was very difficult.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I went through the whole thing, and with three weeks left,
- 5:22Speaker 2: I have all these stories on the things we had
- 5:24Speaker 2: to do and the things I did to try to
- 5:26Speaker 2: get into that house and be embossed around by people
- 5:29Speaker 2: one year older than me, which I still find to
- 5:31Speaker 2: be the weirdest thing in the world looking back. But
- 5:34Speaker 2: I was diagnosed with mono and had to go home.
- 5:37Speaker 4: For four weeks.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Came back to the last week of pledgship and kind
- 5:44Speaker 2: of got. I mean, I don't want to say bet
- 5:47Speaker 2: up because that sounds a bad I just got they
- 5:50Speaker 2: did not take it easy on me. Long story short,
- 5:53Speaker 2: ended up very sick again from that week and never
- 5:57Speaker 2: fully completed it, however, had great buddies house was over
- 6:00Speaker 2: there many many a times afterwards.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Uh.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And because of my long standing pledge ship, I had
- 6:07Speaker 2: made good relationships with some of the sororities. I have
- 6:10Speaker 2: amazing stories about sororities and some of the hospitalities they
- 6:13Speaker 2: showed me, which is always a special time to look
- 6:18Speaker 2: back on before bringing our first caller. I know they're
- 6:22Speaker 2: kind of on the line waiting right now. If we
- 6:25Speaker 2: just started this out with your top sororities and kind
- 6:28Speaker 2: of why you liked them, I think that would be
- 6:30Speaker 2: a good way to get this thing kicked off.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Okay, so yeah, I mean my college experience, my experience,
- 6:37Speaker 1: by the way, was a little different than yours because
- 6:39Speaker 1: I was actually my I was a pledge educator, meaning
- 6:43Speaker 1: I like was the leader of the pledges at one point,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and I was also the social director of our fraternity,
- 6:48Speaker 1: so I got to know all the storties pretty well.
- 6:52Speaker 3: But I was never fine with people being haze or whatever.
- 6:56Speaker 3: I was like, how do you.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Expect these people to want to be your friends if
- 6:58Speaker 1: you're in jackass to them? You know, however long the
- 7:01Speaker 1: time and frame it is, So I always had that
- 7:03Speaker 1: kind of mentality going.
- 7:04Speaker 3: So I totally relate to what you're saying.
- 7:06Speaker 1: But yeah, I would say, uh, you know, in Michigan
- 7:09Speaker 1: State when I was there, the atls are no longer
- 7:12Speaker 1: on campus, by the way, uh got the boot. But
- 7:16Speaker 1: when I was there, we were probably one of the
- 7:20Speaker 1: more notable party houses uh there as well, And I
- 7:27Speaker 1: would always pick out like the ky Omegas and the
- 7:30Speaker 1: Alpha Kyomegas, the Sigma Kappas and.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Uh, the Alpha Fees uh.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And we partied a lot with the Kappa Kapa Gammas
- 7:42Speaker 1: as well, And so I was a regular at a
- 7:46Speaker 1: lot of those date parties too. So I loved it
- 7:48Speaker 1: because I'd be like, hey, yeah, I was the single guy,
- 7:50Speaker 1: so where are we going.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Oh, we're gonna go, you know, to this awesome ski
- 7:53Speaker 3: resort I'm in, you know, And I was. I loved it.
- 7:56Speaker 3: You know, It's super fun.
- 7:57Speaker 1: But those sororities, I think the reasons why we would
- 8:00Speaker 1: typically they were considered the kind of the top houses
- 8:03Speaker 1: on campus, and probably the reasons why we chose to,
- 8:10Speaker 1: you know, have them at our parties and things of
- 8:12Speaker 1: that nature was because a lot of the guys in
- 8:14Speaker 1: the fraternity maybe dated girls in that sorority or.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Whatever it might be.
- 8:18Speaker 1: And so there were you know, relationships that had been
- 8:21Speaker 1: built there from whether they were girl from boyfriend, and
- 8:25Speaker 1: then we became friends with all their friends type of thing.
- 8:28Speaker 1: It just became kind of like this intertwined, you know,
- 8:31Speaker 1: connected group of people. And they were super fun, you know,
- 8:35Speaker 1: always up for a fun event, and they showed up,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you know, like that was one of the things too,
- 8:40Speaker 1: Like you have a party as a fraternity on campus,
- 8:43Speaker 1: and the last thing you want is, I believe the
- 8:46Speaker 1: term would be for it to be a sausage fest, right,
- 8:49Speaker 1: you know what, you don't just want all the dudes
- 8:51Speaker 1: from all the fraternities that are also invited to show
- 8:53Speaker 1: up and none of the women to show up. So
- 8:55Speaker 1: you always wanted the women who would actually show up
- 8:57Speaker 1: and have fun and enjoy the party as well. And
- 9:01Speaker 1: so that was kind of a cool thing I think
- 9:02Speaker 1: about the Stroties that I mentioned was not only were
- 9:05Speaker 1: they you know, super involved in everything that they were doing,
- 9:10Speaker 1: but they were a lot of fun. They were great
- 9:12Speaker 1: to hang out with, great personalities. And then you know,
- 9:16Speaker 1: also they would they would show up in full and
- 9:19Speaker 1: they'd roll on in and the party would would go
- 9:22Speaker 1: up a notch the second they got there. The hardest
- 9:25Speaker 1: part was actually determining which sororities party with that which functions.
- 9:29Speaker 1: So that was always kind of an interesting, you know,
- 9:33Speaker 1: little algorithm I had to figure out too.
- 9:36Speaker 2: The let's be honest, though, Bob, again, we're gonna get
- 9:40Speaker 2: ourselves into trouble today. We do have a collar on
- 9:43Speaker 2: the line that we're going to bring in right now.
- 9:46Speaker 2: The physical attraction also became a theme, like this house
- 9:50Speaker 2: is beautiful, right, or this house is kind of down
- 9:54Speaker 2: my lane, and what I'm physically attracted through that also
- 9:58Speaker 2: played a huge role. And what houses you partied with
- 10:03Speaker 2: and which ones you didn't.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, there was definitely a little bit of that
- 10:06Speaker 1: there too, Probably a lot of that there. But like
- 10:10Speaker 1: I said, you know a lot of times it was
- 10:12Speaker 1: guys in the house maybe were dating girls in that house,
- 10:14Speaker 1: and so you got to know them all and and
- 10:16Speaker 1: the atos in general had impeccable taste, so of course
- 10:20Speaker 1: they were, you know, hanging out with the smoke shows
- 10:23Speaker 1: of that particular time and campus.
- 10:29Speaker 2: The house that I was in is no longer at
- 10:32Speaker 2: Indiana University.
- 10:34Speaker 3: The name of can we ask the name of that?
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah, it's Okay, in most places, it's not very good.
- 10:40Speaker 2: At Indiana University is very good.
- 10:42Speaker 5: I think.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I don't mean to sound disrespectfully, but it almost sounds
- 10:46Speaker 1: like something you would need an ointment for.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Yeah, well, if you if you suffer from acasha.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a that's a fair statement. I think for
- 10:54Speaker 2: the things that happened in some of the reasons why
- 10:56Speaker 2: that house is no longer on.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Care, I can imagine.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, all right, we have our first caller in uh.
- 11:15Speaker 2: He is not only entrenched into the fraternity life, he also,
- 11:22Speaker 2: I'm assuming probably played a role as social chair. Just
- 11:27Speaker 2: looking at this man's face makes me quiver. It is
- 11:31Speaker 2: Brick Rhinestone, join us today.
- 11:33Speaker 6: What's up your pretty faces?
- 11:37Speaker 3: You know? So it's funny.
- 11:39Speaker 1: You and I have often been compared to one another
- 11:41Speaker 1: from our mutual friends. And I was a social chair
- 11:44Speaker 1: in my fraternity and Ben stole it from me when
- 11:46Speaker 1: I said, I was thinking, I bet you Brick Rhinstone
- 11:48Speaker 1: was also the social director of his fraternity, and I
- 11:50Speaker 1: have a feeling you were.
- 11:51Speaker 6: I was not.
- 11:54Speaker 7: You would think I would have a real strong case
- 11:57Speaker 7: for it because I went to school in Kansas and
- 12:01Speaker 7: I came from California, and so I thought I'd be
- 12:05Speaker 7: the big ship when I got there, and I was
- 12:10Speaker 7: quickly put in my place, and.
- 12:13Speaker 6: I was not social chair.
- 12:15Speaker 7: I did get into the house that I wanted to
- 12:19Speaker 7: and still have a lot of those friends, but.
- 12:22Speaker 6: I was not as cool as I thought I was.
- 12:25Speaker 6: I was putting checked pretty quickly.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Really, do you think that's part of why there's a
- 12:31Speaker 2: ploogship with fraternities to put people in there.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:34Speaker 7: I mean, listen, Bob and I went to school a
- 12:38Speaker 7: very long time ago, so things have changed.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Yes, it's much different.
- 12:43Speaker 7: But yeah, I do think that when you go through
- 12:47Speaker 7: Rush and you sign a house and you have all
- 12:49Speaker 7: these older actives who obviously have put in their time
- 12:54Speaker 7: and they think that they're the king of the mountain,
- 12:56Speaker 7: and then you get these freshmen that come in and think, oh,
- 13:01Speaker 7: I got into the house that I wanted, this is
- 13:03Speaker 7: going to be so cool. You get put into reality
- 13:07Speaker 7: check pretty quickly about where you are on the totem pole.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:12Speaker 4: It's probably healthy.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Yeah, it probably is to a certain degree.
- 13:16Speaker 1: I mean part of it too, is I mean, you know,
- 13:18Speaker 1: you get into like the psyche of some of these
- 13:20Speaker 1: dudes that have been there for a while, and in
- 13:22Speaker 1: their minds, they're like, well, in the military, we break
- 13:25Speaker 1: it down to build you back up. And you're like, well, dude,
- 13:27Speaker 1: you've never been to the military first and foremost, so
- 13:29Speaker 1: what's tell you're talking about.
- 13:30Speaker 3: But I do feel like that's kind of what these
- 13:32Speaker 3: guys think they're doing, right.
- 13:33Speaker 1: They're going to reshape you in the mold of what
- 13:35Speaker 1: they want the FRAT to look at, that's for sure.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Now we're here today to talk about sororities. I don't
- 13:41Speaker 2: know if you feel comfortable talking about the topic of
- 13:43Speaker 2: sororities or if you have much experience, but Bob and
- 13:47Speaker 2: I just kind of went through some of our favorites.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Bob shared his top three favorite houses. Actually, I think
- 13:54Speaker 2: Bob shared about ten places that he enjoyed visiting. Yeah,
- 14:00Speaker 2: I'm going to ask you a similar but different question.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I would love for you to talk about maybe why
- 14:05Speaker 2: you didn't enjoy a certain sorority, like what made you
- 14:10Speaker 2: stay away from them or not invite them to the parties,
- 14:12Speaker 2: and then also talk about what made you enjoy certain sororities,
- 14:16Speaker 2: why you enjoyed being around them. Hey, we've already broached
- 14:20Speaker 2: the subject, obviously. It's college and We cannot at all
- 14:24Speaker 2: skim over the fact that we were all very very
- 14:27Speaker 2: immature people at the time, and physical attraction was a
- 14:31Speaker 2: huge component into why you hung out with certain houses
- 14:34Speaker 2: and you didn't. However, there's other reasons. So let's start,
- 14:38Speaker 2: which was a sorority you stayed away from and why?
- 14:41Speaker 7: This is a loaded question that could come back and
- 14:45Speaker 7: really bite, So I'm just going to answer this politically
- 14:50Speaker 7: that there are certain sororities that we stayed away from
- 14:55Speaker 7: and because they weren't quote unquote the cool or the
- 14:59Speaker 7: beautiful girl rolls. If if somebody found out you were
- 15:03Speaker 7: dating somebody or you hooked up with someone from one
- 15:06Speaker 7: of those sororities, it was kind of looked down upon.
- 15:10Speaker 6: And so I'm not going to name any names, but
- 15:14Speaker 6: we definitely had.
- 15:16Speaker 7: Sororities that were the top tier, and those I would
- 15:19Speaker 7: say that was probably Theta Kyo and Delta Gamma, at
- 15:25Speaker 7: least when I went to school, those were kind of
- 15:28Speaker 7: like the top three. That's where the pretty girls were.
- 15:32Speaker 7: That was where you had house parties with your fraternity.
- 15:36Speaker 7: You would do a joint obviously the sorority and fraternity,
- 15:40Speaker 7: and those were also relatively close to our fraternity, So
- 15:45Speaker 7: it made it very easy getting back and forth going
- 15:49Speaker 7: to those parties.
- 15:52Speaker 6: But I think that once again just kind of like
- 15:55Speaker 6: what we see how it started.
- 15:56Speaker 7: It is that you know, they mold you into the fraternity,
- 16:00Speaker 7: molds you into what they want, and it starts from
- 16:04Speaker 7: day one when you're a pledge and you're going to
- 16:07Speaker 7: do as I say, and this is, you know, kind
- 16:09Speaker 7: of our mantra and this is what we follow, and
- 16:12Speaker 7: then it kind of bleeds into other things, whether it
- 16:15Speaker 7: be sports, whether it be sororities, whether it be you know, academics.
- 16:19Speaker 6: And so I think.
- 16:20Speaker 7: That that was you know, there could have been a
- 16:24Speaker 7: beautiful girl at a lesser sorority, but I probably would
- 16:29Speaker 7: not have done that.
- 16:30Speaker 6: Just because of the.
- 16:32Speaker 7: Backlash that I would have gotten from going out with
- 16:35Speaker 7: that person. And also the fact that we're probably never
- 16:40Speaker 7: going to do a fraternity sorority party with that sorority
- 16:46Speaker 7: would make it more difficult for me in the dating
- 16:50Speaker 7: world or socially if that particular sorority was not going
- 16:54Speaker 7: to be part of my everyday, you know kind of
- 16:59Speaker 7: social life.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Brick.
- 17:01Speaker 2: The interesting thing about Indiana University is it's the greek
- 17:06Speaker 2: life is set up in two places. We have Greek
- 17:10Speaker 2: Grow where you know, you had all the houses on
- 17:13Speaker 2: a street, and then we had Third Street, which had
- 17:15Speaker 2: some of the bigger mansions, and that was across campus.
- 17:17Speaker 4: It wasn't a short walk.
- 17:18Speaker 2: It was a twenty five to thirty minute walk to
- 17:21Speaker 2: get from where most of the houses were to Third Street.
- 17:24Speaker 4: But Third Street was where.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Like you wanted to be. Those were the cool houses,
- 17:27Speaker 2: those were the best houses. That was where everything happened.
- 17:31Speaker 2: And I agree with you, Bob, I'm wondering if you
- 17:34Speaker 2: had the same experience. Proximity played a huge role in
- 17:38Speaker 2: the kind of universe that we operated in socially, because
- 17:41Speaker 2: it was hard for us to convince anybody from thirty
- 17:45Speaker 2: minutes away to come down to hang out.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that was part of it.
- 17:49Speaker 1: I mean, for us, all the sororities were pretty much
- 17:51Speaker 1: on the same street, right so it was basically, you know,
- 17:55Speaker 1: the fraternities were kind.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Of off the beaten path for those.
- 17:59Speaker 1: But the sororities were all kind of right there, and
- 18:01Speaker 1: we were pretty close to the majority of them.
- 18:04Speaker 3: So yeah, I think proximity did.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Play a part because some of the outliers probably just
- 18:08Speaker 1: got passed over because they weren't as close like you know,
- 18:11Speaker 1: you mentioned like the Theta House. Data House was popular
- 18:13Speaker 1: house in Michigan State too, but they weren't really near
- 18:16Speaker 1: our fraternity comparatively to the others, and so we still
- 18:19Speaker 1: did stuff with it, but we probably didn't do stuff
- 18:21Speaker 1: with them as much.
- 18:22Speaker 4: The brick.
- 18:23Speaker 2: The thing that I found that I'm thinking back on
- 18:27Speaker 2: this time that was always very interesting is how quickly
- 18:31Speaker 2: when you enter into a fraternity, how quickly the houses
- 18:34Speaker 2: get stereotyped. I want to hear, how why the two
- 18:37Speaker 2: of you think these houses get stereotyped the way they do. Right,
- 18:40Speaker 2: we had the house when you mentioned Alpha fees like,
- 18:44Speaker 2: oh they're very smart, when you talk about the zetas,
- 18:48Speaker 2: Oh they're all blods, like you just had these like
- 18:51Speaker 2: stereotypes that were not always true, but it was kind
- 18:54Speaker 2: of the way that we talked about these houses.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Did you have that same experience.
- 18:58Speaker 6: I think that it is.
- 19:00Speaker 7: Listen, a sorority is, or a fraternity for that matter,
- 19:05Speaker 7: is kind of like your group of friends, and you
- 19:09Speaker 7: associate or you kind of gravitate towards people that are
- 19:14Speaker 7: like you. And so while our friend group is much
- 19:18Speaker 7: smaller when you deal with fraternities and sororities, they have
- 19:22Speaker 7: an image that they kind of want to uphold, whether
- 19:27Speaker 7: they be the academic house or whether they want to
- 19:29Speaker 7: be the blonde house, or they want to be the athletes.
- 19:33Speaker 7: So they obviously do that to make sure that they
- 19:37Speaker 7: keep up that stereotype.
- 19:39Speaker 6: And I think that that, you know, it makes it
- 19:41Speaker 6: easier for you as a freshman that.
- 19:46Speaker 7: You can say, Okay, there's ten fraternities that I'm looking at,
- 19:51Speaker 7: and this one's a smart one, so I definitely don't
- 19:53Speaker 7: fit in there, so I don't want to go to
- 19:55Speaker 7: that one. But these are the athletic or these are
- 19:57Speaker 7: the good looking guys, or these are the guys who
- 19:59Speaker 7: like to party.
- 20:00Speaker 6: You're gonna you're gonna go.
- 20:02Speaker 7: You're gonna lean towards that because you know you're gonna
- 20:04Speaker 7: have the most in common. And so I think that's
- 20:06Speaker 7: probably the same way with the sororities, although probably women
- 20:09Speaker 7: won't tell you that's why, you know, I doesn't matter.
- 20:13Speaker 7: All my friends are equal, whether they're the smart ones
- 20:16Speaker 7: or not. But I think from my standpoint, that was
- 20:20Speaker 7: what led me to the house that I joined, is
- 20:22Speaker 7: that this is where I had the most in common
- 20:25Speaker 7: with those guys, and and it ended up working great.
- 20:30Speaker 7: I you know, I went to school one hundred years
- 20:32Speaker 7: ago and I still am great friends.
- 20:33Speaker 6: I still see them.
- 20:35Speaker 7: Every year, and that's probably a testament to how the
- 20:39Speaker 7: recruiting or rush operates.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Brick Reinstone, we appreciate you joining us today to talk
- 20:46Speaker 2: about your experience in Greek life. It's a pleasure to
- 20:49Speaker 2: have you, an honor to have you on the show.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Continue to be you.
- 20:52Speaker 6: Hey, I'm not done.
- 20:53Speaker 7: I want to say I'm wanna tell one story to
- 20:55Speaker 7: any of your listeners who may be going to college.
- 20:58Speaker 6: I'll tell you what the best thing that I did.
- 21:01Speaker 7: And some people might frown on it, But when I
- 21:05Speaker 7: was in the fraternity and the Theta house was, you know,
- 21:09Speaker 7: one of the more popular ones where certainly the pretty
- 21:12Speaker 7: girls were, I went down there to be a waiter
- 21:16Speaker 7: for the girls, and I'm telling you that might have
- 21:19Speaker 7: been the best decision I made in all of college,
- 21:23Speaker 7: because you get to interact with the girls on a
- 21:28Speaker 7: daily basis.
- 21:29Speaker 6: It's not out of the bar.
- 21:30Speaker 7: It's not like, you know, I want to hook up,
- 21:32Speaker 7: but they get to see who you really are, and
- 21:35Speaker 7: you see them every day for two meals a day.
- 21:38Speaker 6: And I'm telling you I got a lot of dates and.
- 21:42Speaker 7: Probably more than I deserve and probably more than the
- 21:44Speaker 7: Theta house wanted. But being a waiter, if you're going
- 21:48Speaker 7: through rush and you're going to be in a fraternity,
- 21:51Speaker 7: go down and apply to be a waiter at one
- 21:54Speaker 7: of the sororities that you think that you might match
- 21:57Speaker 7: up with or hook up with one of the elder
- 22:00Speaker 7: than that sorority.
- 22:01Speaker 2: That's you know what, You're brilliant because the best way
- 22:04Speaker 2: to show you care is through service, and what better
- 22:07Speaker 2: way to show service? Yeah, yeah, he's He's opening up
- 22:13Speaker 2: the door for all these little teenage boys entering into college,
- 22:16Speaker 2: being like I got to apply to serve and Brick
- 22:21Speaker 2: your spot on.
- 22:22Speaker 7: Sounds good, guys, Listen, it was great talking to you.
- 22:25Speaker 7: I hope to see those pretty faces very soon.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Love you guys, Well yeah, love that guy.
- 22:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean you can just see it.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Brick was one of those guys that all the other
- 22:37Speaker 2: fraternity brothers just wanted to be around because he wasn't
- 22:41Speaker 2: like slimy, you know, he wasn't excuse. He really did
- 22:46Speaker 2: want to make friendships, which I think is very valuable.
- 22:50Speaker 2: But also to be a guy that the women go, wow,
- 22:54Speaker 2: he's such a good dude. Goodness, gracious, he did it
- 22:57Speaker 2: and he just had ha. Happens to be very some. Also,
- 23:02Speaker 2: some people have it all. Some people have it all.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Some people are the quarterback at Michigan State. Some people
- 23:07Speaker 2: gain seventy five pounds in college and sit on their
- 23:10Speaker 2: couch and just waits for friends to come and sit
- 23:13Speaker 2: next to me. Anyways, Hey, we have another caller coming up.
- 23:18Speaker 2: This caller is another person with a deep tie to
- 23:24Speaker 2: Greek life. We're going to talk to him today, Bob,
- 23:27Speaker 2: I really want to find out from him. You know,
- 23:29Speaker 2: Brick is one of those nice guys, and I think
- 23:32Speaker 2: the next one's a nice guy too. However, I want
- 23:34Speaker 2: to know what he doesn't didn't like about sororities. Like,
- 23:37Speaker 2: I think we need to open this up to give
- 23:39Speaker 2: like some clarity and context for why some sororities just
- 23:43Speaker 2: weren't chosen to party with the cool kids.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, cool, I like it.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Our caller up next is named Tuck. Tuck.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Obviously from knowing this guy, he was one that made
- 24:11Speaker 2: the rooms brighter, Bob, when he walked in, right like,
- 24:14Speaker 2: the spirit increased, the energy increased.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Tuck Welcome to the podcast.
- 24:22Speaker 2: My first question to you is when you think of
- 24:25Speaker 2: your most iconic story in college, what comes to mind?
- 24:31Speaker 5: Probably my best was a lot of stuff with graduation.
- 24:36Speaker 5: So when you graduate, so I went to CALN thirty
- 24:39Speaker 5: five thousand people, and you have all these schools that
- 24:43Speaker 5: you graduate from, so it takes like two or three weeks.
- 24:46Speaker 5: So you get a gown, you get a cap, and
- 24:48Speaker 5: you go to your own graduation ceremony, but you keep
- 24:52Speaker 5: your gown. So I had several people that said, hey,
- 24:56Speaker 5: come to my graduation and trip and fall down the
- 24:58Speaker 5: stairs and all that stuff. And I don't like being
- 25:00Speaker 5: told what to do. So I said, sure, i'll go,
- 25:04Speaker 5: but I'll do something else. So I went and I
- 25:07Speaker 5: joined the economics graduation. There had a bunch of buddies
- 25:11Speaker 5: that were in that it was another graduation, and so
- 25:14Speaker 5: I sat through the whole thing and then you give
- 25:16Speaker 5: a you give a card that says your name because
- 25:19Speaker 5: they don't know who you are, and so I gave
- 25:21Speaker 5: my name as Joey Buttafuco. When the you know, it
- 25:25Speaker 5: was the all that stuff that was going on, So
- 25:26Speaker 5: they announced Joey Buttafuco and it was like, what did
- 25:30Speaker 5: they just say so it was I had a lot
- 25:33Speaker 5: of fun with a graduation gown that was. That was
- 25:37Speaker 5: a good story.
- 25:39Speaker 3: That's a commitment that shows, I mean you were giving
- 25:41Speaker 3: up your time.
- 25:42Speaker 5: My whole life has been a bit.
- 25:43Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 25:44Speaker 5: I always think about making somebody laugh.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Accomplished.
- 25:50Speaker 2: The reason we're here today is to give some insight
- 25:53Speaker 2: into the male perspective on sororities.
- 25:57Speaker 7: Uh.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Looking back at your time uh at the University Cow,
- 26:03Speaker 2: what sororities stand out to you in your mind of
- 26:06Speaker 2: place of places that you had good memories.
- 26:09Speaker 5: With, Well, I would say pie Fi number one because
- 26:11Speaker 5: I married uh my present wife only wife. Uh, she
- 26:20Speaker 5: was a pie Fi. I would rank pi Fi probably
- 26:23Speaker 5: fourth on houses, but I married her nonetheless.
- 26:27Speaker 4: Uh, kapas were good.
- 26:29Speaker 5: Uh, DG's were good at pi Fi's were probably third,
- 26:33Speaker 5: and tried it eats were pretty good.
- 26:35Speaker 2: We have some themes going on here, Bob, don't We
- 26:37Speaker 2: have similar houses that have been mentioned now from you
- 26:40Speaker 2: to Brick to Tuck. We have we have a theme
- 26:44Speaker 2: going on that some houses stand up above the rest.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Now what houses to you? Tuck? Maybe you look back
- 26:54Speaker 4: on without the fond memories.
- 26:56Speaker 5: Uh?
- 26:57Speaker 2: And and maybe why did some sorority not click with
- 27:01Speaker 2: your house while others did well.
- 27:04Speaker 5: I should also say I I don't know that the
- 27:07Speaker 5: cap is or dgi's talked to me either, So there,
- 27:10Speaker 5: you know, there's a there's a scale there that should
- 27:12Speaker 5: be noted. I have a bad in my brain. Theda's
- 27:20Speaker 5: Thetas are bad, you know. So it's right behind Sae House,
- 27:24Speaker 5: so if you're looking in the backyard, you can see
- 27:26Speaker 5: the Theta house, which is bad to begin with. And
- 27:29Speaker 5: we had a party with them called upside Down Margarita party,
- 27:33Speaker 5: and it was like in the I can't remember what
- 27:36Speaker 5: it called, the sump or the pit, you know, in
- 27:38Speaker 5: the basement where we have this party with girls. It's
- 27:41Speaker 5: not above ground, so we always had this party down
- 27:43Speaker 5: below upside down Margarita. You can imagine what it was.
- 27:49Speaker 5: Not that that was a bad party. I didn't originate
- 27:53Speaker 5: that party, but that was not like Theda's. And that
- 27:57Speaker 5: party just didn't seem like a good idea.
- 28:00Speaker 4: A party experience at college.
- 28:04Speaker 2: There's a lot of ones that I like look back on,
- 28:06Speaker 2: and you know, it's kind of like the slam your
- 28:08Speaker 2: head against the pillow moments where you're like, goodness, that
- 28:11Speaker 2: could have gone really bad, and a bunch of twenty
- 28:14Speaker 2: year olds to twenty two year olds with the you know,
- 28:20Speaker 2: the things available to us, and we were just kind
- 28:22Speaker 2: of let loose.
- 28:26Speaker 4: You know.
- 28:26Speaker 2: There there's a lot of things that I choose to
- 28:28Speaker 2: I think forget, but overall, Tuck. When you look at
- 28:33Speaker 2: your experience in Greek life, is it one that you
- 28:37Speaker 2: still look back on with fond memories?
- 28:40Speaker 1: You know?
- 28:40Speaker 2: We had just a guest on Brick was telling us
- 28:43Speaker 2: that some of his best friends today are still from
- 28:45Speaker 2: his fraternity house. He still gets together with them. Obviously
- 28:49Speaker 2: it's lasted. He's in his fifties now that long.
- 28:53Speaker 4: Do you have the same experience totally?
- 28:55Speaker 5: Yeah. First of all, every rule that's in place now
- 29:01Speaker 5: for my kids and all the fraternity and sororities parties,
- 29:04Speaker 5: every rule they have need a wristband, all this stuff,
- 29:08Speaker 5: no kegs. All this stuff came from my era. Of
- 29:12Speaker 5: all the stuff where somebody died or should have died,
- 29:16Speaker 5: or can't do this, or you can't light this thing
- 29:18Speaker 5: on fire. All those rules you can't do was it
- 29:22Speaker 5: was bad? You could do whatever you want. But to
- 29:25Speaker 5: answer your question, I have probably you know, text groups
- 29:30Speaker 5: of twenty twenty five of these folks that I still
- 29:34Speaker 5: connect with. We do these parties every Christmas. Lots of
- 29:38Speaker 5: people that we still stay in contact with. And I
- 29:40Speaker 5: have two or three that are you know, if something
- 29:44Speaker 5: were to happen to me, they would they would fill in,
- 29:47Speaker 5: you know, and play play dad for my kids. So
- 29:50Speaker 5: very fond memories of these people, and to me, totally
- 29:54Speaker 5: worth it. You're just kind of looking for two or
- 29:56Speaker 5: three people out of this thing.
- 29:58Speaker 4: Yeah, talk.
- 30:00Speaker 2: The final question I have is then you two might
- 30:03Speaker 2: be able to explain it to me. I don't understand
- 30:05Speaker 2: this term. There's a question here from our producers that
- 30:09Speaker 2: asks did you ever go to a pinning? Did you
- 30:13Speaker 2: pin anyone? Is the question? Do you guys know what
- 30:16Speaker 2: a pinning is?
- 30:17Speaker 3: Yep?
- 30:18Speaker 5: And the answer is no. I think it's silly, but
- 30:21Speaker 5: you're basically just saying, hey, we're girlfriend boyfriend and let's pin.
- 30:24Speaker 5: We're probably gonna get married. We had a couple of those.
- 30:28Speaker 5: I think two of them they both got married. But
- 30:29Speaker 5: who cares. I got to tell you a really good story.
- 30:34Speaker 3: I got.
- 30:34Speaker 5: This is like from a fraternity perspective, and Rush, this
- 30:39Speaker 5: was probably my all time greatest thing that I did
- 30:44Speaker 5: pulled off. There After a while, you get kind of
- 30:48Speaker 5: sick of this stuff and you're like, I don't want
- 30:49Speaker 5: to do this anymore. You just show up, and so
- 30:52Speaker 5: you get bored. And so I came up with this
- 30:55Speaker 5: idea that I'm going to make up a fictitious person
- 30:58Speaker 5: and I'm going to get this person a bid. So
- 31:00Speaker 5: every day I would write this person's name and I,
- 31:03Speaker 5: you know, I said, whatever, his name is, Ben Higgins
- 31:05Speaker 5: from Newport Beach, California water polo player. And then at
- 31:10Speaker 5: night you go through and you talk about these people
- 31:11Speaker 5: and they say, okay, Ben Higgins, and so I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 31:15Speaker 5: I saw him. What a stud six or four, blonde hair,
- 31:18Speaker 5: super strong. He's thinking about going to the next doorhouse.
- 31:22Speaker 5: We got to get him. But this is our guy,
- 31:25Speaker 5: and so I kept writing his name down and then
- 31:27Speaker 5: trying to show him up. You know, where is he
- 31:28Speaker 5: we got to meet him. I'm like, he just left.
- 31:30Speaker 5: He's in the back doing beer bongs with us and stuff.
- 31:33Speaker 5: And ultimately it got to the point that they're like,
- 31:35Speaker 5: we don't think that this person exists, you know. So
- 31:40Speaker 5: I knew I needed a wingman. So you talked about
- 31:43Speaker 5: the people that I that I made friends with. I
- 31:46Speaker 5: reached out to my wingman. I'm like, hey, I'm totally
- 31:48Speaker 5: made up this guy's name, but I need you to
- 31:50Speaker 5: vouch for me. And everybody loves you. So then somebody says,
- 31:53Speaker 5: has anybody else met Ben Higgins? And my buddy raises
- 31:56Speaker 5: his hand, he goes, I have. He's a fucking stud.
- 31:59Speaker 5: We got. We got to do everything we can to
- 32:01Speaker 5: get this guy in and I was like, yes, and uh,
- 32:04Speaker 5: ultimately this thing got it failed, like we didn't like
- 32:07Speaker 5: you write a bit, but I almost got an imaginary person.
- 32:12Speaker 5: It's to show how silly this is.
- 32:14Speaker 3: Cok.
- 32:14Speaker 1: I got a question for you, So, had you gotten
- 32:16Speaker 1: down to the final night. We used to have the
- 32:19Speaker 1: you know, the pictures would pop up and we'd be like, okay,
- 32:21Speaker 1: this is you know, you know John Smith or whatever.
- 32:25Speaker 1: So what did you have planned for that in the
- 32:27Speaker 1: event that it got to that point? Did you guys
- 32:29Speaker 1: do the photos and the whole better? Was it just
- 32:31Speaker 1: name recognition only?
- 32:33Speaker 5: That's that's a very intelligent question. We didn't have photos.
- 32:37Speaker 5: I mean again, it's just like a notepad. You signed
- 32:40Speaker 5: your name so I'm fifty five, So we weren't into
- 32:43Speaker 5: the you know, nobody had phones or cameras. Uh yeah,
- 32:47Speaker 5: no phones there. You know, you just uh, you just
- 32:50Speaker 5: had to kind of wing it. So a lot of
- 32:51Speaker 5: it was, hey, we trust you. You're a good person,
- 32:53Speaker 5: and I was kind of not doing the best from
- 32:56Speaker 5: a trust perspective.
- 32:58Speaker 3: I think that's classic.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Though.
- 32:59Speaker 1: We did polaroids because you and I are about the
- 33:02Speaker 1: same age, So we did polaroids and we'd pop them
- 33:05Speaker 1: up on the screen, and you know, it was kind
- 33:08Speaker 1: of like animal.
- 33:09Speaker 3: House, right.
- 33:09Speaker 1: It was like, you know that that picture would pop
- 33:11Speaker 1: up and people would throw their drinks at the screen
- 33:13Speaker 1: or whatever it might be.
- 33:14Speaker 3: You know, it was ridiculous.
- 33:15Speaker 5: You know those ski masks that have the holes here
- 33:18Speaker 5: and then this. So I'm running around the house like,
- 33:21Speaker 5: hey guys, you know I got to run like pretending
- 33:23Speaker 5: I was a guy. So probably the best I could do.
- 33:27Speaker 3: So good.
- 33:28Speaker 2: I can't let you get away from here without asking
- 33:30Speaker 2: you. You screwed over the fact that you married somebody that
- 33:36Speaker 2: you met in college. Can you tell us more about this?
- 33:39Speaker 2: And you ranked her house? I hope she listens as
- 33:42Speaker 2: the third or fourth. Let's just put an emphasis on
- 33:44Speaker 2: that so you can have a great conversation tomorrow.
- 33:47Speaker 4: About it.
- 33:48Speaker 2: But you met your wife in college. She was a
- 33:51Speaker 2: part of a sorority, can you in detail?
- 33:54Speaker 5: Yes, I met her. She's a year younger than me.
- 33:58Speaker 5: We went on a couple for states. I really liked her.
- 34:02Speaker 5: She was cute, she was funny, she laughed at every
- 34:04Speaker 5: single thing I did. And so we went to some
- 34:07Speaker 5: date party. We went as Roger Rabbit and Jessica and
- 34:13Speaker 5: she says that I went home with somebody else, which
- 34:16Speaker 5: is a lie, but apparently she didn't. She didn't want
- 34:21Speaker 5: to date me too much longer after that, and so
- 34:23Speaker 5: then she went out and dated this boy for Fi Cap,
- 34:26Speaker 5: another good house water polo player. He was the best
- 34:29Speaker 5: water polo player probably in the country. Cow was really
- 34:33Speaker 5: good at water polo player. I would go to his
- 34:36Speaker 5: games and I would see her and I'm like, hey,
- 34:38Speaker 5: you going to the water polo game and she goes, no,
- 34:40Speaker 5: why would, I'm like, cause your boyfriend's a pretty big deal.
- 34:43Speaker 5: And she didn't care about any of that stuff. And
- 34:46Speaker 5: then they broke up, and then we saw her. I
- 34:50Speaker 5: saw her coming out of Tahoe and I was bronze blonde,
