Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My name is John found of Stock, also known as Tumor.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I play the bass in.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Snot fantastic, brother, thanks for joining us on a Sunday.
- 0:10Speaker 1: All right, it's rocking Saturday. It's Saturday night here, so
- 0:14Speaker 1: in fact you should be.
- 0:15Speaker 2: At party and Mi, what are you doing talking to met.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Fucking Saturday night fever with you bro right here?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Fantastic. So Snart returned to us try early next year.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I had for three shows with Soulfly and now Baum,
- 0:27Speaker 2: starting in Brisbane, getting in twenty sixth Then you hit
- 0:30Speaker 2: Sydney in Melbourne and you finish his part of Froth
- 0:32Speaker 2: and Fury and Adelaide on the thirty thirsty January. Like,
- 0:36Speaker 2: that's not a bad couple of plans to hit the
- 0:37Speaker 2: right with Night, Soulfly and now Bam right right.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Good friends of ours known each other for god going
- 0:45Speaker 1: on twenty five years or more. You know. Mikey also
- 0:49Speaker 1: played in Soulfly after snot after Linn had passed.
- 0:53Speaker 3: So we're out on the road with the family again.
- 0:56Speaker 1: We played with Sulfly in Mexico City back in May,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and uh we kindled our friendship and here we are
- 1:03Speaker 1: coming to Australia.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Know, thanks Fassy, it's made every decades since was last
- 1:08Speaker 2: day ernestraa. So what's changing through the band in that time?
- 1:11Speaker 2: I know it's a big answer to it.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Sum it up for us, Ah, Well, the greatest thing
- 1:17Speaker 1: that happened to us is we found our fucking singer
- 1:21Speaker 1: that we've been looking for since we lost Lynn, and
- 1:26Speaker 1: his name is Andy Knapp, and we couldn't be happier
- 1:31Speaker 1: to be back and playing shows with Andy owned vocals,
- 1:34Speaker 1: and everything's just been amazing so far, selling out shows
- 1:38Speaker 1: from all over England, in Belgium, we were in France,
- 1:43Speaker 1: they're playing the festivals in the US and now we're
- 1:46Speaker 1: coming down Under with Andy. So that's what's up. Yeah,
- 1:52Speaker 1: we're gonna we're gonna play gets some maybe a few
- 1:55Speaker 1: other tasty tunes on the side. We'll lay down and
- 1:59Speaker 1: then working on some new music too later and then
- 2:04Speaker 1: drop that maybe you never know, January, maybe February.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah, you mentioned the new singer, Andy like. It couldn't
- 2:12Speaker 2: have been an easy for you guys finding the right
- 2:14Speaker 2: singer to replace Lynn, like you tried to have Tommy
- 2:16Speaker 2: and Karl since since he passed. But did you ever
- 2:19Speaker 2: really know what specific things you were looking for in
- 2:21Speaker 2: a new singer or was it more prow and error
- 2:24Speaker 2: and see how it goes.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Well?
- 2:27Speaker 1: I think I think it's a lot different now. We
- 2:32Speaker 1: were pretty much saying Snart as back at this point.
- 2:34Speaker 1: We finally found and Andy what we basically were dreaming
- 2:43Speaker 1: of having. And I'm not saying anything negative on the
- 2:46Speaker 1: past singers that we had before. When we put Snot together,
- 2:51Speaker 1: it wasn't like we're reforming, we're back anything like that.
- 2:56Speaker 1: We were more doing it for fun, for the love
- 2:58Speaker 1: of music, love Jamie and Mikey and myself playing together
- 3:02Speaker 1: and we're like, you know, the scott and play.
- 3:04Speaker 3: The songs, you know. But it wasn't like I'm seriously.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Saying like we're back and you know, coming back to
- 3:12Speaker 1: uh here to stay and swing, you know, like we
- 3:14Speaker 1: are now. And like I said, it's a blessing to
- 3:18Speaker 1: have found Andy and what he's doing. Uh And obviously
- 3:22Speaker 1: the response from the fans has been nothing but positivity.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Right, it was earlier this year that you played in
- 3:30Speaker 2: first shows, right, So aside from being on stage with
- 3:33Speaker 2: a new singer, how was it to be back on
- 3:35Speaker 2: stagees not knowing that he's actually had a bit of
- 3:38Speaker 2: a future start.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I mean coming off this last tour and seeing the
- 3:46Speaker 1: response from the crowd, I mean yeah, it was it
- 3:52Speaker 1: brought tears to our eyes, you know, it was uh
- 3:55Speaker 1: And it brought tears to their eyes, to our fans.
- 3:57Speaker 3: You know.
- 3:58Speaker 1: I look out and see people that are like and
- 4:01Speaker 1: their sixteen year olds and they're singing our songs and
- 4:05Speaker 1: they know all the lyrics and they're fucking losing their mind.
- 4:08Speaker 1: And it was like, I wasn't expecting expecting that at all,
- 4:12Speaker 1: you know, And it wasn't that way ten years ago
- 4:16Speaker 1: when we ran through those areas.
- 4:17Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, a lot has changed.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I think there's a big resurgence now of bands from
- 4:25Speaker 1: the nineties the late nineties getting a whole resurgence, and
- 4:31Speaker 1: I see it a lot, and it's a good thing.
- 4:33Speaker 3: It's a really good thing. I think.
- 4:37Speaker 1: That style and the metal thing is actually coming back
- 4:40Speaker 1: now and being embraced.
- 4:43Speaker 2: So charming is a big thing in this industry and
- 4:45Speaker 2: getting the charming rot with things all that.
- 4:49Speaker 3: No, totally.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I mean, there was a there was a festival in
- 4:52Speaker 1: the US and it kind of what it's all started,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and it's called a Sick New World.
- 4:58Speaker 3: And I went there, and you know, it was like.
- 5:02Speaker 1: A system of a down cold chamber and Incubus and
- 5:09Speaker 1: all the bands that came up in that era. And
- 5:12Speaker 1: that's when Mikey and I again started getting the fire
- 5:15Speaker 1: under our ass, thinking, dude, we could only find the
- 5:19Speaker 1: right singer, you know, we could do this again.
- 5:23Speaker 3: So and we did. So we're back.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah, now, going back to the early days like you've been,
- 5:31Speaker 2: was not back in the beginning from the mid nineties.
- 5:33Speaker 2: But what was a musical climate like back then? And
- 5:37Speaker 2: then where did not fit in? Initially when you started?
- 5:44Speaker 1: I don't think we ever really liked well, we did
- 5:47Speaker 1: fit in, but I think everybody was kind of doing
- 5:50Speaker 1: their own thing then and then it kind of all
- 5:54Speaker 1: become more cookie cutter as the years went by. But
- 5:56Speaker 1: I still back then, you know, I came from the
- 6:00Speaker 1: East Coast. I didn't know anything about bands like Corn
- 6:03Speaker 1: or Deaftones. So when I first landed in Santa Barbara
- 6:07Speaker 1: and I met Lynn and Mikey, like, Lynn's like, hey,
- 6:09Speaker 1: let's go check out this band Corn. They're they're they're
- 6:12Speaker 1: gonna blow up, They're gonna be big, you know, And
- 6:15Speaker 1: there was still a baby band then, you know, and
- 6:17Speaker 1: all that and Corn Deftones the sound completely different, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and definitely snot sounds completely different. I think all these
- 6:26Speaker 1: bands were doing their own thing back then, and then
- 6:30Speaker 1: I think that's when the.
- 6:32Speaker 3: New metal term came about.
- 6:36Speaker 1: They're like, well, nobody could put their finger on what
- 6:39Speaker 1: it was it was, you know, and they go, this
- 6:41Speaker 1: is some kind of new metal that they're doing. I
- 6:44Speaker 1: think that's how that term came about. That.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Yeah, so there you go.
- 6:48Speaker 2: That's here is your music is star. It was a
- 6:53Speaker 2: fusion a new metal, hot, cool, punk and funk. But
- 6:56Speaker 2: back then it wasn't as common as what it is now.
- 6:59Speaker 2: So you go now from the stop ro like, how
- 7:01Speaker 2: did you find the balance between all that genres back
- 7:04Speaker 2: then in the creative pricess?
- 7:06Speaker 3: Okay, great question. Well fucking crazy, as you know. Like
- 7:12Speaker 3: I said, I'm from the East Coast. The other guys
- 7:14Speaker 3: are from the West Coast. We didn't grow up.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Together, we didn't know each other, but we all were
- 7:19Speaker 1: influenced by the same style as the music and kind of.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Combined them together, you know. I mean I grew.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Up loving you know, starting early with full and Bounds,
- 7:32Speaker 1: you know, like ac DC, and then I got into
- 7:34Speaker 1: like the British heavy metal invasion, and then I discovered
- 7:38Speaker 1: punk rock, and I really fucking loved punk rock as
- 7:41Speaker 1: a kid, and I kind of always from there. I
- 7:45Speaker 1: got away from metals so much and I and it
- 7:49Speaker 1: was that mixture of those two styles.
- 7:53Speaker 3: So then when you met like Mikey and Lynn, and
- 7:55Speaker 3: Lynn grew.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Up to like No Effects, RKL, Bad Religion, but then
- 8:01Speaker 1: like fucking Bad Brains and then Pantera and then the
- 8:05Speaker 1: grunge movement and stuff like that, and then this we
- 8:10Speaker 1: melted together and you know, and then we all love
- 8:13Speaker 1: Faith No More. Faith No More does all kinds of
- 8:17Speaker 1: crazy shit music genre wise, and I think it's a
- 8:19Speaker 1: lot of the influence of what Snot was about, where
- 8:23Speaker 1: every single song is kind of a lot different from
- 8:27Speaker 1: the first, but they all fit together like a puzzle,
- 8:29Speaker 1: you know what I mean.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Thank then you released your debut album, Gets Something ninety seven,
- 8:36Speaker 2: which they bridge a gap between the growing number of
- 8:38Speaker 2: new metal bands out there. Right, But when you wrote
- 8:41Speaker 2: and recorded the album, like were just confident to be
- 8:43Speaker 2: something special or we more just making music for yourself back.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Then, I've always been confident.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I think we all were striving to make the
- 8:53Speaker 1: best fucking record we could.
- 8:55Speaker 3: You know.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Yeah, we didn't win any slackers on their record. You know,
- 9:01Speaker 1: we kicked a lot of songs to the curb. We
- 9:03Speaker 1: wrote a lot before that record, and there's a lot
- 9:06Speaker 1: of songs on tape like why did you do that song?
- 9:09Speaker 3: Why don't do that song? You know, and you know,
- 9:11Speaker 3: and back then we were discovering ourselves. So anything that
- 9:15Speaker 3: we may wrote and go, ah.
- 9:16Speaker 1: That sounds like corn or you know, we throw it
- 9:19Speaker 1: in the trash.
- 9:21Speaker 3: You know, We're not not out of disrespect.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It's like we were trying to melt find who we were.
- 9:28Speaker 1: We didn't want to like replicate when any other bands
- 9:30Speaker 1: were doing on Sunset Strip, you know, And we did
- 9:34Speaker 1: our own thing up in Santa Barbara.
- 9:35Speaker 3: And then when we came down there, like everybody was doing.
- 9:37Speaker 1: The same thing, like you know, and that's when we
- 9:40Speaker 1: met up with System and then Shit seven Dusts flew
- 9:45Speaker 1: out from Georgia and played Roxy with us, and then
- 9:49Speaker 1: we flew back there and played with them on the
- 9:51Speaker 1: East Coast and it was yeah, it was a lot
- 9:53Speaker 1: of bands doing their own thing. But like I said,
- 9:57Speaker 1: new metal, you know, like what is new metal? You
- 9:59Speaker 1: know what everybody has maybe their own definition of what
- 10:02Speaker 1: it is.
- 10:05Speaker 2: I'm running with the oars from now one, brother, I
- 10:06Speaker 2: think it's perfect.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Thank you, Thank you.
- 10:11Speaker 2: It was obvious back in those early days that Lynn's
- 10:14Speaker 2: charisma and his infectious personality were a large part of
- 10:16Speaker 2: the band's early success. But what was his personal outlook
- 10:20Speaker 2: on what was his vision for the band?
- 10:23Speaker 3: What was his wife for the band?
- 10:24Speaker 2: At the end, his vision for the band and his
- 10:26Speaker 2: personal outlook on it.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I think he was living his vision everything how he
- 10:32Speaker 1: envisioned it early. I mean, his lyrics are basically his
- 10:37Speaker 1: life story. He was, you know, every like we rehearsed
- 10:46Speaker 1: a lot, and we practiced a lot, and we all
- 10:49Speaker 1: had a vision. We were very dedicated to it. Luckily
- 10:52Speaker 1: we only a few of us had tiny, little day jobs,
- 10:56Speaker 1: but we definitely rehearsed like six to eight hours a day,
- 11:00Speaker 1: I should you, and like a lot of writing music together.
- 11:06Speaker 3: And yeah, that's how it came about.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Yeah. Unfortunately, every all know like Lynn was taken from
- 11:16Speaker 2: us in nineteen ninety eight and the band understandably chose
- 11:19Speaker 2: not to continue. But you had a heap of songs
- 11:21Speaker 2: ready for the next album. I've heard a couple of
- 11:24Speaker 2: different versions on this, So I just wondered if you
- 11:26Speaker 2: clear it up for us, Like, one version is that
- 11:29Speaker 2: the nucleus of those songs was used for the album
- 11:32Speaker 2: straight up and and the bands wrote their own lyrics
- 11:35Speaker 2: for the songs. But then I've heard as well that
- 11:38Speaker 2: Mike wrote specific new music for that album with the
- 11:41Speaker 2: singers in mind, Like which one of those is correct?
- 11:47Speaker 1: Well, honestly, Starlet Eyes was around when Lynn was around
- 11:55Speaker 1: still with us, and mainly I wouldn't say the nucleus
- 12:04Speaker 1: of the songs were written force not, And I would
- 12:09Speaker 1: say none of the songs were written in general for
- 12:11Speaker 1: any of those singers.
- 12:13Speaker 3: They were just they were.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Written, and then we wrote a list of singers that
- 12:19Speaker 1: we thought we would work well on, those songs who
- 12:24Speaker 1: intertwined with us in our lives, that deserved to be
- 12:28Speaker 1: on that record.
- 12:29Speaker 3: So you're like, so like you were like, oh, this
- 12:32Speaker 3: song would.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I think Brandon from Incubus would sound good on, and
- 12:35Speaker 1: this one Max would sound good on. But we weren't like, oh,
- 12:39Speaker 1: we got a pen of song for Max, we got
- 12:41Speaker 1: to write a song or yeah. So we just wrote
- 12:44Speaker 1: and wrote and wrote, and then we're like, what are
- 12:46Speaker 1: we going to do with this music? But you know,
- 12:48Speaker 1: maybe two or three ideas were around before Lynn died,
- 12:53Speaker 1: but mainly it was all written afterwards.
- 12:57Speaker 3: And then what are we going to do with this music?
- 12:59Speaker 1: And then let's let's we dreamed up about finding singers
- 13:03Speaker 1: to sing on every single song.
- 13:05Speaker 2: And did you notice singers write their own lyrics from
- 13:07Speaker 2: no personal point of view? All the lyrics written for him.
- 13:10Speaker 1: No absolutely wrote wrote Yeah, there weren't pen by us whatsoever,
- 13:18Speaker 1: you know, and you know each person came in with
- 13:21Speaker 1: their own way, with the way they do it.
- 13:23Speaker 3: It was.
- 13:23Speaker 1: It was a cool process to watch. I got to
- 13:27Speaker 1: when I wasn't on tour with Amen, I got.
- 13:29Speaker 3: To uh see uh the uh.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Dez from cole Chamber to his I got to see
- 13:37Speaker 1: Jonathan from Korn. I was there for Angel's son some
- 13:43Speaker 1: of that, and then some of the music was done
- 13:46Speaker 1: when Mikey wasn't on tour with Soulfly, he was putting
- 13:49Speaker 1: the album together.
- 13:50Speaker 3: So we were both sharing like producer to put it together.
- 13:55Speaker 3: We were both working on it when we had the time.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Pretty was it still is probably one of my favorite
- 14:02Speaker 2: all time albums, straight up like a brilliant album. Couldn't
- 14:05Speaker 2: take the emotion out of it as well. It's still
- 14:07Speaker 2: a brilliant album. But how diffic for you guys to
- 14:10Speaker 2: even begin working on something like that.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it was painful, you know, and we just lost
- 14:17Speaker 1: Lynn and you know we we were we're grieving his loss.
- 14:25Speaker 3: You know. It wasn't an easy album to make.
- 14:29Speaker 1: It was a lot involved and a lot of people
- 14:32Speaker 1: said it couldn't be done, and but we were we
- 14:36Speaker 1: were headstrong that we could do it, and at the
- 14:39Speaker 1: end we pulled it off. I it'd be cool somehow
- 14:43Speaker 1: someday we could get it. I don't even know where
- 14:48Speaker 1: the tapes or anything liable to remix that album and
- 14:51Speaker 1: make it.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Sound the way it should sound.
- 14:54Speaker 1: I really wish we could have a remix of the
- 14:56Speaker 1: straight up album.
- 14:59Speaker 2: I still kind of watch a video for angel Son
- 15:01Speaker 2: and not gear up made like you guys must it
- 15:03Speaker 2: must be ten thousand fold for you guys. It's a
- 15:06Speaker 2: beautiful monument to his life and the music he left behind.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Good on yours for actually doing that for the fans
- 15:13Speaker 2: as role made like it's yeah, very get what happened.
- 15:18Speaker 1: There's beautiful moment filmed in Malibu on the beach, and
- 15:23Speaker 1: we asked everybody to come out that could, and a
- 15:26Speaker 1: lot of people showed up and it was just the
- 15:30Speaker 1: director said what he was trying to do, and and
- 15:33Speaker 1: we pulled it all off and one evening it was crazy.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Wow.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Now you spoke about some new music before, so I
- 15:41Speaker 2: believe you've cracked two songs earlier this year which you
- 15:44Speaker 2: planned to release late this year or early next year.
- 15:47Speaker 2: What christ can you tell us about them?
- 15:50Speaker 1: Mike and I we've been writing for like six seven
- 15:52Speaker 1: years now, I believe, or we've put away a lot
- 15:55Speaker 1: of music that we recorded and kind of kept it
- 16:00Speaker 1: under the belt, and then when we found Andy, we
- 16:03Speaker 1: were like, hey, let's let's revisit those songs that we
- 16:06Speaker 1: stashed away. And then Mike he's like, no, let's write
- 16:12Speaker 1: two new ones too, and then add to it and
- 16:14Speaker 1: then revisit and re record those. So when we went
- 16:20Speaker 1: in and we still gel like that, it's crazy. So
- 16:24Speaker 1: we threw down two new songs with Chris Collier. He
- 16:27Speaker 1: works with Korn, and Mikey does a lot of stuff
- 16:30Speaker 1: with Chris in Vegas. So we just got drums done
- 16:35Speaker 1: with Jamie when he had some time off. And Bad Religion,
- 16:37Speaker 1: our drummer plays in Bad Religion, also and now we're
- 16:42Speaker 1: going to work on vocals with Andy and we're going
- 16:45Speaker 1: to go in in November and start messing around with
- 16:47Speaker 1: it and see where it goes.
- 16:50Speaker 2: To the music that you've got for it, Like does
- 16:52Speaker 2: it have the same eclectic disregard for convention as head
- 16:56Speaker 2: back then?
- 16:57Speaker 3: Exactly?
- 16:58Speaker 1: Yeah, that's how we write it's crazy. And Mikey picks
- 17:03Speaker 1: up a guitar and it's it's just it smells like
- 17:07Speaker 1: it's not bro It's it's like, damn, it's it's fucking eerie.
- 17:12Speaker 3: And what's really eerie is like I could still hear
- 17:15Speaker 3: what I could hear Lynn? I could like, like what
- 17:18Speaker 3: would Lynn do on this?
- 17:19Speaker 1: Like in my head, I could hear him because it
- 17:22Speaker 1: sounds like he should be there.
- 17:24Speaker 3: So, yeah, it's crazy.
- 17:29Speaker 2: You've probably been ansiot one thousand times. Pray. But my
- 17:31Speaker 2: nine year old daughter asked me this morning and I
- 17:33Speaker 2: couldn't answer it, So you're gonna have to answer it
- 17:35Speaker 2: for her, Like, where's the band's name has not come from?
- 17:39Speaker 2: She wanted to know if someone why it's not on
- 17:41Speaker 2: someone's face and that's how it came about. But I said,
- 17:43Speaker 2: I don't think so, you know.
- 17:46Speaker 1: The story is I wasn't even in the band at
- 17:49Speaker 1: the time. Mikey thought of it. He was, And actually
- 17:53Speaker 1: Mikey didn't think of it. It was the original I
- 17:56Speaker 1: believe bass player. And Mikey's like, we need cool name
- 18:00Speaker 1: in the original base. He's like, and original bass players,
- 18:04Speaker 1: like we could be anything. We could just be called
- 18:07Speaker 1: snot And Mike He's like, that's it. And that's how
- 18:13Speaker 1: it came about.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Is the original basis blurted out.
- 18:15Speaker 1: He was like, we could call ourself anything, and he
- 18:18Speaker 1: was just saying something ridiculous, ridiculous and you know, and
- 18:23Speaker 1: it stuck.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Well, I lost the bet rhy because I told her
- 18:26Speaker 2: I thought it would have been. He threw chatting one
- 18:28Speaker 2: day anyway, and it's not good enough. Oh it's not.
