- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's Thursday. It's the 17th of October.
- 0:17Thank you for inviting me in. I hope that you're going well.
- 0:20I hope this week's been going well.
- 0:22It is almost at the end of the week, not quite, still a couple
- 0:25of days to go, but we are continuing to read through this
- 0:29story. We started with Ezra and now we
- 0:32have been listening to Nehemiah tell the story of how they were
- 0:36rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem just as God told them
- 0:40to. And if you weren't entirely
- 0:42convinced that Nehemiah was a legend, well, today is the day
- 0:45that it officially becomes that way with a red stamp on his
- 0:50forehead saying dead set legend. It is another story of God
- 0:54raising a people with his own heart, hearts not only to
- 0:59restore things as they should be, but that's part of that to
- 1:03make sure that nobody gets lost along the way.
- 1:06Leave no man behind. Yes, that is almost Nehemiah's
- 1:09cry as we will hear today. Not quite, but kind of.
- 1:12So having said all that, let's keep going with the story,
- 1:16friends. Let us read together Nehemiah
- 1:19Chapter 5. About this time, some of the men
- 1:32and their wives raised a cry of protest against their fellow
- 1:36Jews. They were saying we have such
- 1:38large families, we need more food to survive.
- 1:43Others said we have mortgaged our fields, vineyards, and homes
- 1:47to get food during the famine. And others said we have had to
- 1:51borrow money on our fields and vineyards to pay our taxes.
- 1:55We belong to the same family as those who are wealthy and our
- 1:58children are just like theirs, yet we must sell our children
- 2:02into slavery just to get enough money to live.
- 2:06We have already sold some of our daughters and we are helpless to
- 2:10do anything about it, for our fields and vineyards are already
- 2:13mortgage to others. When I heard their complaints, I
- 2:18was very angry. After thinking it over, I spoke
- 2:22out against these nobles and officials.
- 2:24I told them you are hurting your own relatives by charging
- 2:28interest when they borrow money. Then I called the public meeting
- 2:33to deal with the problem. At the meeting I said to them,
- 2:37we are doing all we can to redeem our Jewish relatives who
- 2:42have had to sell themselves to Pagan foreigners, but you are
- 2:46selling them back into slavery again.
- 2:49How often must we redeem them? And they had nothing to say in
- 2:54their defence. Then I pressed further.
- 2:58What you are doing is not right. Should you not walk in the fear
- 3:02of our God in order to avoid being mocked by enemy nations?
- 3:07I myself, as well as my brothers and my workers, have been
- 3:11lending the people money and grain.
- 3:14But now let us stop this business of charging interest.
- 3:17You must restore their fields, vineyards, olive Groves and
- 3:21homes to them this very day and repay the interest you charge
- 3:26when you lent them money, grain, new wine and olive oil.
- 3:31They replied, We will give back everything and demand nothing
- 3:35more from the people. We will do as you say.
- 3:39Then I called the priests and made the nobles and officials
- 3:42swear to do what they had promised.
- 3:44I shook out the folds of my robe and said, If you failed to keep
- 3:49your promise, May God shake you like this from your homes and
- 3:54from your property. The whole assembly responded,
- 3:59Amen. And they praised the Lord, and
- 4:02the people did as they had promised.
- 4:05For the entire 12 years that I was governor of Judah, from the
- 4:0920th year to the 32nd year of the reign of King Artaxerxes,
- 4:14neither I nor my officials drew on our official food allowance.
- 4:19The former governors, in contrast, had laid heavy burdens
- 4:22on the people, demanding a daily ration of food and wine besides
- 4:2740 pieces of silver. Even their assistance took
- 4:30advantage of the people. But because I feared God, I did
- 4:34not act that way. I also devoted myself to working
- 4:38on the wall and refused to acquire any land, and I required
- 4:43all my servants to spend time working on the wall.
- 4:47I asked for nothing, even though I regularly fed 150 Jewish
- 4:51officials at my table, besides all the visitors from other
- 4:55lands. The provisions I paid for each
- 4:58day included one ox, six choice sheep or goats, and a large
- 5:03number of poultry. And every 10 days we needed a
- 5:07large supply of all kinds of wine.
- 5:10Yet I refuse to claim the governor's food allowance
- 5:13because the people already carried a heavy burden.
- 5:17Remember, O my God, all that I have done for these people, and
- 5:22bless me for it. Yeah, Lord, he is a legend.
- 5:35Thank you for this story. Thank you for this character who
- 5:40has authored this book for us to read.
- 5:45It's just quite something to hear someone live in a way when
- 5:49they know that they are already blessed by you.
- 5:53And that's us, Lord. We are blessed people.
- 5:56We don't need to spend our waking moments planning and
- 6:00scheming how we can build up an empire for ourselves, because
- 6:05Your empire is for us. And You invite us to eat at Your
- 6:10table in Your glorious Kingdom. Thank you, Lord, that our future
- 6:16is already assured and that all that's left for us to do is to
- 6:20bring our friends and family and all that we can with us into
- 6:25that incredible blessing that You offer.
- 6:29Lord, give us generous hearts to share Your love and Your
- 6:33generosity with those in our lives so that as they see the
- 6:37way that we live, they can be shocked and wonder how we can be
- 6:41so self assured knowing that we're taken care of not by our
- 6:46own cleverness, but by Your incredible grace.
- 6:51Thank you for the grace that You have given us and most notably
- 6:55Lord, for the grace that You have given us in Jesus.
- 6:59Thank you for His life, His sacrifice of His life for us,
- 7:03and His resurrection so that we can be made blameless in Your
- 7:08sight and live eternally with You, our Triune God.
- 7:14And we pray all of this in your holy and wonderful name, Amen.
