- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Gino here in the Women's Basketball Coaches Show.
- 0:02Speaker 1: There is a men game tomorrow night, ironically at Finner
- 0:05Speaker 1: and Pavilion when the men will play Villanova tomorrow night.
- 0:07Speaker 1: That's a six o'clock game for Mike and Wayne on
- 0:09Speaker 1: the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity Network app, and the
- 0:12Speaker 1: Varsitynetwork dot Com. Here with Gino as we're doing the
- 0:16Speaker 1: coach a Show. Later we'll visit with his red shirt
- 0:18Speaker 1: freshman from Egypt, Jenna l Alfie, who has been a
- 0:22Speaker 1: bit of a project, but that's kind of the norm
- 0:24Speaker 1: though for post players. It always seems like the post
- 0:27Speaker 1: players just take longer to develop. And she's only fifteen
- 0:30Speaker 1: games in after not playing for a year and a half,
- 0:32Speaker 1: so it's going to take some time. And you were
- 0:34Speaker 1: seeing baby steps but a lot of positives. But the
- 0:37Speaker 1: game is still kind of quick for her right now.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it is. And I think the younger you are
- 0:45Speaker 2: and you suffer a season ending injury like her, like
- 0:49Speaker 2: her Achilles injury, the less you know how to handle that,
- 0:55Speaker 2: handle it in what you rehab has to look like,
- 1:00Speaker 2: handle it like what your sleep habits have to look like,
- 1:03Speaker 2: what your nutrition has to look like, what you're working
- 1:06Speaker 2: the weight room has to look like because you've never
- 1:10Speaker 2: been injured before. So I think that took a huge
- 1:14Speaker 2: toll physically and mentally on Jenna and a little bit
- 1:18Speaker 2: of a little bit of a time we're coming out
- 1:21Speaker 2: of it. But yeah, young kids take a long time.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Young big kids take longer than guards do. And people
- 1:32Speaker 2: coming off you know, season ending surgery, have a lot
- 1:36Speaker 2: to overcome. So she's got a lot of things that
- 1:40Speaker 2: she's juggling and you know, little by little, because we
- 1:47Speaker 2: said going in, you know, this is one of the
- 1:49Speaker 2: missing pieces that we have, you know, a big presence
- 1:52Speaker 2: in the lane offensively and defensively, and we need to
- 1:56Speaker 2: get her to that again, same thing as I said
- 1:58Speaker 2: about easy. It's the first week in January, so by
- 2:01Speaker 2: the first week in March, this needs to be This
- 2:03Speaker 2: needs to look different.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I know some of the conversations we had last year,
- 2:06Speaker 1: how bummed you were because a she gets hurt and
- 2:09Speaker 1: you're and she was going to fill in right away
- 2:11Speaker 1: for Dorka and that dynamic and that's not there. But
- 2:14Speaker 1: let's move forward a little bit. This is just the
- 2:16Speaker 1: start of working relationship with Jenne and Sarah, and you
- 2:21Speaker 1: think of the great postplayer combos that you have and
- 2:23Speaker 1: the way Sarah moves to basketball, there's gonna be a
- 2:25Speaker 1: lot of benefits down the road.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I'm hopeful. I'm hopeful of that. I hope, I hope
- 2:31Speaker 2: Jenna really takes advantage of what we have with her
- 2:37Speaker 2: and Sarah. I hope she takes advantage and gets herself
- 2:42Speaker 2: even more mobile, like exceptionally more mobile, so that she
- 2:47Speaker 2: can benefit from having somebody like Sarah that she can
- 2:52Speaker 2: move and as she's on the move, Sarah will find her.
- 2:57Speaker 2: And as she's on the move defensively, she'll blame more shots,
- 3:01Speaker 2: she'll get more rebounds, she'll start more transition opportunities for us.
- 3:06Speaker 2: So there's so many things. And yeah, to think that
- 3:10Speaker 2: the two of them have not just this year, but
- 3:13Speaker 2: the next three years. Yeah, it could be quite exciting
- 3:17Speaker 2: to watch them play.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yeah, as Sarah exceeded your expectations fifteen games in. I
- 3:23Speaker 1: know she's the number one recruit out of high school,
- 3:26Speaker 1: so there was a lot of hype there. But watching
- 3:28Speaker 1: her and do a lot of things she does, it's
- 3:30Speaker 1: been pretty impressive.
- 3:32Speaker 2: It has you know, the people that are watching her
- 3:37Speaker 2: play now didn't see her much playing in high school.
- 3:40Speaker 2: We saw ninety percent of her games. It seemed like
- 3:45Speaker 2: when she was in high school, Josh len her do everything.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I've seen her make ten threes in a row, you know.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I've seen her throw passes that you know, an NFL
- 3:55Speaker 2: quarterback can't throw. I've seen her catch some passes that
- 3:59Speaker 2: nobody could catch. You know, all the things that you're
- 4:01Speaker 2: seeing now, I've seen her do all those things. So
- 4:06Speaker 2: I'm not surprised. But at the same time, to be
- 4:11Speaker 2: able to come in and have it happen like that,
- 4:15Speaker 2: usually there's got to be a little bit of a
- 4:16Speaker 2: learning curve, you know. And believe me, she's still learning.
- 4:19Speaker 2: She's great because she asks a lot of questions. But man,
- 4:23Speaker 2: oh man, it's like she's she's She's just one of
- 4:30Speaker 2: those unique kids that comes along every once in a
- 4:33Speaker 2: while whose mind is in sync with her with her body.
- 4:38Speaker 2: You know, some kids, you know, they have a lot
- 4:41Speaker 2: of physical ability, but their mind gets in a way.
- 4:44Speaker 2: She's perfectly balanced that way, and man, it doesn't. It
- 4:51Speaker 2: doesn't come along every day.
- 4:52Speaker 1: No. And you mentioned the hands, I mean not only
- 4:55Speaker 1: the quick hands to get tips and steels, but she
- 4:57Speaker 1: makes a lot of if he passes look really good.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, like I.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Think Jim Moore might want a recruiter to be a
- 5:04Speaker 1: tight end these guys.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Yeah, these guys. And I'll tell you what, the way
- 5:08Speaker 2: some of the some of the passes these guys throw,
- 5:10Speaker 2: you better have great hands. And she saves a lot
- 5:15Speaker 2: of possessions. My favorite is when she tips the ball
- 5:19Speaker 2: to herself when it's coming off the rim. You know,
- 5:22Speaker 2: that's just that's just innate athletic ability, you know, having
- 5:26Speaker 2: a sense. But I'm really proud of her. I mean,
- 5:31Speaker 2: it's not like she played at the biggest high school
- 5:33Speaker 2: in America. She played at this little Grace Christian Academy,
- 5:36Speaker 2: you know, And and for her to excel on this stage,
- 5:42Speaker 2: I'm just really proud of her. Yeah.
- 5:44Speaker 1: And let's not forget the fact that she played a
- 5:46Speaker 1: big part in that comeback against USC. It's just unfortunate
- 5:49Speaker 1: at the end. Okay, she missed a free throw. That's
- 5:52Speaker 1: gonna happen, But she seemed to be recovered from that
- 5:55Speaker 1: quite nicely.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah. And you see that, you know, you
- 5:59Speaker 2: see that all the time, you know, And and and
- 6:03Speaker 2: that's got to be rewarding for her and confidence building
- 6:10Speaker 2: knowing that I can I can play like that in
- 6:13Speaker 2: a game like that. And I know she really took
- 6:17Speaker 2: it to heart. That misfree throw really stuck with her
- 6:21Speaker 2: for quite some time. And yet she's built off of
- 6:26Speaker 2: it rather than, you know, kind of wallowing it like
- 6:30Speaker 2: some kids might.
- 6:31Speaker 1: That's what the good players do. More Geno final second
- 6:33Speaker 1: with him in just a moment here on Learfield to
- 6:35Speaker 1: stay with us,
