- 0:00Speaker 1: And now move the sticks with Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks.
- 0:07Speaker 2: What's up, everybody?
- 0:07Speaker 3: Welcome to move the sticks on a Monday, DJ Bucky
- 0:10Speaker 3: Rhett back with you boys. I mean from college football,
- 0:15Speaker 3: which we're not going to touch today. We'll get to
- 0:16Speaker 3: that tomorrow a little bit. And throughout the week, crazy
- 0:20Speaker 3: crazy weekend college football, and then the NFL ended up
- 0:23Speaker 3: having some nutso NFL games as well. Buck, What was
- 0:27Speaker 3: your h your thoughts on the weekend as a whole
- 0:30Speaker 3: before we get into these games.
- 0:32Speaker 2: One. I loved every minute of it. I loved all
- 0:35Speaker 2: the rivalry stuff, like we'll take Montario's out of there
- 0:37Speaker 2: because they got absolutely mollywop by n c State. But
- 0:41Speaker 2: there is something about watching college football games on Saturday
- 0:45Speaker 2: when the rivalries are involved. I sat there and watch
- 0:47Speaker 2: the Iron Bowl, and I'm sitting there with Uguars and like,
- 0:52Speaker 2: I have a guy who's not really a college football fan,
- 0:54Speaker 2: but I don't even know why people watched it. I
- 0:55Speaker 2: was like, man, this is why you watch it. Because
- 0:57Speaker 2: at the end he's like, it's over. There's no way
- 0:59Speaker 2: is I say, I mean, you never know what there is?
- 1:02Speaker 2: And then he throws the dime in the corner of
- 1:04Speaker 2: the end zone. Indeed, I'm sitting there like it wasn't
- 1:08Speaker 2: for the fact that I see it all the time
- 1:09Speaker 2: in high school where you just see crazy things that
- 1:12Speaker 2: shouldn't happen happen. I was like, man, this is crazy.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Gonna lose the iron bolt on a four thirty one
- 1:19Speaker 2: thirty thing. The only thing they can do is throw
- 1:21Speaker 2: it into the end zone.
- 1:23Speaker 3: But the good thing was they were spying him, and
- 1:25Speaker 3: Casey took off to run.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, they were spying, So that was good. That was
- 1:28Speaker 2: sick sick out, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:33Speaker 1: If you can't make a tackle from the thirty one
- 1:35Speaker 1: to the goal line, you don't deserve to be on
- 1:36Speaker 1: a field there, right. So the best part about all
- 1:41Speaker 1: of that is the is the reaction, right, I mean,
- 1:43Speaker 1: obviously the plays, the plays that decharged some crying folks
- 1:47Speaker 1: in the stands. Buddy, I'm just telling you, Like, I
- 1:50Speaker 1: was talking to a friend of mine who works in
- 1:53Speaker 1: Indianapolis and the media, and he's like, I'm from you know, Atlanta.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I've got Auburn family. They were at my house. My
- 2:00Speaker 1: stepmother as soon as that play happened went to the
- 2:02Speaker 1: bedroom and did not emerge until the next day. I mean,
- 2:09Speaker 1: like that's how, but that's how. Just more the reactions are,
- 2:14Speaker 1: you know, to like that week of college football, and
- 2:17Speaker 1: obviously in the NFL we saw plenty of it too,
- 2:19Speaker 1: you know, with the way that games come down to
- 2:21Speaker 1: the wire, the Eagles and Bills and that the way
- 2:23Speaker 1: that thing ended up is incredible. So we'll get to
- 2:26Speaker 1: all of it. But it was an awesome weekend to
- 2:28Speaker 1: just to put it.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Out, yeah to me, to me when you it was
- 2:32Speaker 3: literally like we had my wife and my son where
- 2:36Speaker 3: we were all just kind of sitting on the couch.
- 2:38Speaker 3: And normally for us like college football and I'll you know,
- 2:40Speaker 3: obviously get into the tape and everything as we get
- 2:42Speaker 3: towards the draft, but college football almost like baseball for us,
- 2:45Speaker 3: where it's kind of it's on. We'll have the games
- 2:47Speaker 3: on on Saturday, but you know, Sunday we're working, so
- 2:50Speaker 3: Saturday got some other stuff done around the house, and
- 2:52Speaker 3: it's kind of the games are kind of like a backdrop.
- 2:54Speaker 3: But that fourth and thirty one, we were all sitting
- 2:56Speaker 3: there glued and all of us were just.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Like, what did that just happened?
- 3:02Speaker 1: That game was like unbelievable, not so stuff happens in
- 3:06Speaker 1: that game more than any other game.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I feel like it was And there were several other
- 3:10Speaker 3: games like that too. Washington Washington State came down to.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Washington Washington State was unbelievable, Like it was a great game.
- 3:15Speaker 2: The Apple Cup. It's always kind of contentious, but watching
- 3:18Speaker 2: that the tension becuse it's gonna be the last one.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Maybe that we sold the.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Oak Bucket game.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I guess I guess the Oak and Bucket
- 3:24Speaker 2: game that who.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Knew who knew BYU Oklahoma State was the game we
- 3:27Speaker 3: all needed, by the way, uh being a barn burner.
- 3:31Speaker 2: You know. And then the Michigan Ohio State like the
- 3:33Speaker 2: way that is like that that battle of like toughness
- 3:37Speaker 2: and just interception. Yeah, I think I like a little acrimony,
- 3:42Speaker 2: a little tension between bases and coaches. I think I
- 3:46Speaker 2: like that. I think I like seeing robberies that hey, no,
- 3:49Speaker 2: we don't like you guys. I'm not shaking hands, I'm
- 3:51Speaker 2: not doing all this nice stuff like we don't like you,
- 3:54Speaker 2: you don't like us, cool, let's get it off.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Well unlike uh, unlike that Florida defensive lineman, We're not
- 4:01Speaker 3: gonna be spitting we're gonna be spitting facts here because
- 4:03Speaker 3: we're gonna into right into the right into the NFL.
- 4:06Speaker 3: That was that was not a great look, all right,
- 4:09Speaker 3: before we get into these games. But we've got we've
- 4:11Speaker 3: got some games we want to jump into. Sorry for
- 4:13Speaker 3: the little detour with college football, which is such an incrazy,
- 4:15Speaker 3: crazy weekend, but we have a coaching change this morning,
- 4:19Speaker 3: it was announced the Carolina Panthers for the ninety fourth
- 4:23Speaker 3: time since David Tepper has taken over or making a change.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Maybe a little bit of an exaggeration there, but this
- 4:29Speaker 3: is like, it's an insane amount of coaches that he's
- 4:31Speaker 3: run through here in a very short amount of time.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Frank Reik doesn't get a year. He gets eleven games
- 4:36Speaker 3: and he is out. And this is a there's a
- 4:40Speaker 3: lot of ways we can go. We talked about them
- 4:41Speaker 3: in the past, you know, rhtt We talked about it
- 4:44Speaker 3: and kind of put together that little plan which you've
- 4:46Speaker 3: got such favorable feedback for real favorable on social media.
- 4:52Speaker 1: But Panthers fans are very attached to Brian Burns. Okay,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I mean this is this is I mean, this is
- 4:59Speaker 1: a bad situation.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Like I don't know how it can get worse than
- 5:04Speaker 3: having a roster that earns you the number one overall
- 5:07Speaker 3: pick that you don't own. Like that is I'm trying
- 5:11Speaker 3: to think back of like you know, I buck. I
- 5:14Speaker 3: guess they will say there's no such thing as an
- 5:16Speaker 3: undesirable job. There's only thirty two of these things, like
- 5:19Speaker 3: they're sought after. But on the outside looking in, there
- 5:23Speaker 3: is a lot of work to be done. And you've
- 5:26Speaker 3: got one hand tied behind your back without owning that
- 5:29Speaker 3: number one overall pick, and you got another future pick
- 5:31Speaker 3: that's coming out your pocket as well. I think it's
- 5:33Speaker 3: a two the following year. Yes, look, it's a tough job.
- 5:37Speaker 2: And before you even get to like the resources that
- 5:40Speaker 2: you have or the lack of resources that you have,
- 5:43Speaker 2: is stepping into a situation where the owner is very,
- 5:45Speaker 2: very actively involved. The track record the last two coaches
- 5:49Speaker 2: were dump fairly quickly after taking over what everyone around
- 5:53Speaker 2: the league knew as rebuilding projects. Makes it difficult. Now
- 5:58Speaker 2: this is the one that will take the job because
- 5:59Speaker 2: only two of them. But you talk about the least
- 6:02Speaker 2: being so short man in terms of trying to trying
- 6:05Speaker 2: to rebuild it, I mean we have seen I mean
- 6:08Speaker 2: really good coaches struggle that first season, then they bounce
- 6:10Speaker 2: back the next year. Everyone loves Dan Campbell and what
- 6:13Speaker 2: he's done now, but it was tough that first year
- 6:15Speaker 2: in Detroit before he had an opportunity to kind of
- 6:18Speaker 2: put his plan into play and get his right people
- 6:20Speaker 2: and all that other stuff. To me, I don't really
- 6:24Speaker 2: even know what to say about Frank Reichen. An eleven
- 6:27Speaker 2: game ten year, you have the number one overall pick
- 6:29Speaker 2: and a young quarterback in Bryce Young. You're trying to
- 6:32Speaker 2: teach him how to play the NFL game while figuring
- 6:35Speaker 2: out what's around him, and to be judged like he's judged.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I know the record isn't what anyone wanted, but sometimes
- 6:42Speaker 2: it happens to me. I just think it makes it
- 6:45Speaker 2: a very very difficult job to sell. Even though someone
- 6:47Speaker 2: would jump up his I think it's a man, it'd
- 6:50Speaker 2: be hard for me to jump in there.
- 6:52Speaker 1: You know, And I look back at the genesis of
- 6:54Speaker 1: you know, what goes wrong here? Was there a good
- 6:58Speaker 1: enough relationship? Was there a good enough working relationship between
- 7:02Speaker 1: Scott Fitterer and Frank Reich? Were they able to come
- 7:05Speaker 1: together to figure out the best course forward? Did they
- 7:08Speaker 1: all agree on Bryce Young. You know, was that the
- 7:11Speaker 1: fact or was there some dissension? What does David Tepper
- 7:14Speaker 1: know that you know, somebody wanted this guy and the
- 7:17Speaker 1: other guy wanted the other guy.
- 7:18Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 7:18Speaker 1: Like was can you go back? Can you now again?
- 7:21Speaker 1: Seeing c J. Stroud excel watching your team lose to
- 7:27Speaker 1: a rookie quarterback in Will Levis, I mean had to
- 7:31Speaker 1: you had to think that that plays at least a
- 7:33Speaker 1: little bit of a role in the perception for an
- 7:37Speaker 1: owner seeing his franchise that you know, spent all those
- 7:40Speaker 1: resources to go get Bryce Young. And look, I don't
- 7:42Speaker 1: know that we're still saying that Bryce Young isn't the guy.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I just think that we all agree that there aren't
- 7:46Speaker 1: enough guys around him for him to show that he
- 7:49Speaker 1: can be the guy. And then you also look at
- 7:52Speaker 1: you know, like how much of this is of Frank
- 7:55Speaker 1: Reich's doing as well? Like you have the you know,
- 7:58Speaker 1: whether it was the plan or not. But after a
- 8:00Speaker 1: few games you turn play calling over to Thomas Brown,
- 8:03Speaker 1: and then after three games you take it back and
- 8:06Speaker 1: then it's not working, and it's almost like you're painting
- 8:09Speaker 1: your staff and your decisions as a bit of a mess.
- 8:15Speaker 1: And I know you're trying to get it right, but
- 8:17Speaker 1: the perception is that man, all the button buttons you're pushing,
- 8:21Speaker 1: they're not working. And if they're not working, then I
- 8:23Speaker 1: got to find another way to make it work, and
- 8:26Speaker 1: that's probably with another person.
- 8:28Speaker 3: So here's some of the dates on this stuff. So
- 8:31Speaker 3: with Tepper's owner, Ron Rivera was fired after week thirteen
- 8:34Speaker 3: and twenty nineteen. Matt Rule was fired after week five
- 8:37Speaker 3: and twenty two. Frank Reich was fired after week twelve.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Obviously this morning, so then Mike Sando it does.
- 8:46Speaker 2: A good job.
- 8:47Speaker 3: He had this tweet where he was talking about things
- 8:49Speaker 3: that have happened on Tepper's watch. Here Matt Rule seven
- 8:52Speaker 3: years one hundred or seven years sixty two million dollar
- 8:55Speaker 3: deal trading Christian McCaffrey. They canceled the new practice for
- 9:00Speaker 3: ability that they were in the process of building. They
- 9:02Speaker 3: declined the huge offer I believe was what two to
- 9:04Speaker 3: ones for Brian Burns from the RAMS. It was a
- 9:08Speaker 3: healthy trade offer. They turned that down. They fired Steve
- 9:10Speaker 3: Wilkes after he'd had some success in the interim basis,
- 9:14Speaker 3: you hire Frank Reich and his staff all that money
- 9:17Speaker 3: and you trade to the top of the twenty three draft,
- 9:19Speaker 3: Like am like that is not there is not a
- 9:23Speaker 3: lot that's gone right uh in there.
- 9:26Speaker 1: You know. And I'm also looking at it like I
- 9:28Speaker 1: felt like for the most part, we were all pretty
- 9:31Speaker 1: complementary of the way that Frank assembled the offensive set.
- 9:35Speaker 3: All these quarterbacks, all these quarterbacks.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Brown got, Jim Colewyll in the building, You got you know,
- 9:41Speaker 1: from young innovators to you know, wise experience coaches with experience,
- 9:48Speaker 1: and so yeah, you look at that and is it
- 9:50Speaker 1: in fact the head coach then that that just has
- 9:52Speaker 1: to shoulder the blame on that.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the big question would be asking Frank
- 9:58Speaker 2: if Frank really want to assemble to staff like that
- 10:00Speaker 2: or was this a staff that was as symbol by
- 10:03Speaker 2: owner who wanted to do it differently, you know, because
- 10:05Speaker 2: some of the words that have come out is that
- 10:07Speaker 2: he didn't want a staff for the buddies, based on
- 10:10Speaker 2: what he had experienced with Matt Ruhle. He wanted the
- 10:13Speaker 2: best minds to get together. And in theory that sounds nice,
- 10:17Speaker 2: but when you're coaching, there has to be a synergy
- 10:20Speaker 2: and a connectivity that we tend to see the game
- 10:23Speaker 2: out the same lens. You know, there's a vision for
- 10:26Speaker 2: how we're going to play on offense, defense, and special teams.
- 10:29Speaker 2: That is all complimentary, and yes, you want to have
- 10:32Speaker 2: divergent thought, but you still have to have an anchor
- 10:36Speaker 2: for how you want to play. I worry about so
- 10:38Speaker 2: many different people coming from so many different systems. How
- 10:42Speaker 2: do you put that together for the betterment of the
- 10:45Speaker 2: quarterback and the players around. I just wonder if they
- 10:48Speaker 2: ever were on the same page when it comes to
- 10:50Speaker 2: doing that. And whose idea was it to have a
- 10:53Speaker 2: coaching staff full of all stars, because it certainly hasn't
- 10:56Speaker 2: work to this point.
- 10:58Speaker 3: A little bit conflicted here because I think the challenge
- 11:02Speaker 3: of winning in the NFL, it's the hardest thing to
- 11:04Speaker 3: do and it's got the most parody.
- 11:06Speaker 2: It's set up for parody.
- 11:08Speaker 3: So you can look at a situation like what transpired
- 11:11Speaker 3: in Vegas, where you've got a head coach and a
- 11:13Speaker 3: GM that have an existing relationship, and there you would
- 11:16Speaker 3: think believe in all the same things. It didn't work
- 11:18Speaker 3: out there. Then you can go through examples, you know,
- 11:21Speaker 3: like look, I know a lot was made about the
- 11:23Speaker 3: game ball with the Giants being given to Wink and
- 11:26Speaker 3: there's all this talk about Dayball and Wink hating each other,
- 11:29Speaker 3: not getting along, and they come from different places, different theories,
- 11:31Speaker 3: different philosophies. We've got this situation here where you don't
- 11:35Speaker 3: have that previous relationship front office and the coaching staff.
- 11:38Speaker 3: So I can point to a million things and say, look,
- 11:41Speaker 3: these guys were best friends, they came in up in
- 11:44Speaker 3: the same system, they got together and it didn't work.
- 11:46Speaker 3: And I can show you other examples where they came
- 11:48Speaker 3: in from successful other organizations that came together, didn't work,
- 11:51Speaker 3: and then flip it and do the exact opposite. So
- 11:55Speaker 3: I don't think there's one way to do it. I
- 11:56Speaker 3: would just say maybe it's maybe the lesson here is
- 12:02Speaker 3: that you've got to have the infrastructure in place roster wise,
- 12:08Speaker 3: for a rookie quarterback, you do, and if you're going
- 12:12Speaker 3: to trade. And I was somebody who was in favor
- 12:16Speaker 3: when they made this trade, I thought, hey, they haven't
- 12:18Speaker 3: they haven't been able to get a quarterback. They needed
- 12:20Speaker 3: to make the move to go up there and get him.
- 12:22Speaker 3: I said that at the time. Now I might have
- 12:24Speaker 3: overestimated the talent on the current roster. Clearly I did,
- 12:28Speaker 3: because when you look at the way it's constructed right now.
- 12:30Speaker 3: But I think in hindsight now we can learn from
- 12:33Speaker 3: others mistakes.
- 12:34Speaker 2: But Buck, if you're.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Going to it's one thing to take him when you're
- 12:38Speaker 3: picking one, you know, and say, Okay, he might not
- 12:40Speaker 3: be the elite elite level, he's going to be really good,
- 12:43Speaker 3: solid starter. We're not going to be looking for a guy.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Take him, no doubt. But if you're going to part
- 12:48Speaker 3: with all of these resources, including your number one receiver
- 12:52Speaker 3: in the process, he has to be the truck. There
- 12:55Speaker 3: is no you cannot take the trailer there. You have
- 12:58Speaker 3: to take the truck. Who's going to be able to
- 12:59Speaker 3: pull everybody? And why I think we are in agreement.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Bryce's talented. Bryce's got a chance to be a good player.
- 13:04Speaker 3: He's not that you know, He's not that guy where
- 13:06Speaker 3: you could part with everything to go get him. In hindsight, yeah,
- 13:12Speaker 3: I would say, I would say this, And I think
- 13:14Speaker 3: the scouting guys always bring us back to where we
- 13:17Speaker 3: have to have truisms, right. Yeah, And so when we
- 13:19Speaker 3: think about grading and the grading scale, we talk about
- 13:23Speaker 3: the top five talent and the top ten talent, what
- 13:26Speaker 3: they should look like in those things. I think what
- 13:28Speaker 3: we have to do is stay true to those principles
- 13:32Speaker 3: right that we've been taught along the way, Like, hey,
- 13:34Speaker 3: if it's a number one overall pick, he should be
- 13:36Speaker 3: able to check off these boxes as a special player.
- 13:39Speaker 2: So Miles Garrett would be the one. Right, So Miles
- 13:42Speaker 2: Garrett from a prototypical standpoint, you look at what he is,
- 13:46Speaker 2: that is the number one overall pick all day every day.
- 13:49Speaker 2: And so when we think about Bryce and love all
- 13:52Speaker 2: the intangibles that he brings. But DJ Rhett, if we
- 13:56Speaker 2: think about it, he's an outlier in a bunch of
- 13:59Speaker 2: different ways. Size, not only hyke but also weight. Arm
- 14:04Speaker 2: talent is good, but I wouldn't say it is great.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Athleticism wouldn't be in that elite.
- 14:11Speaker 3: That's the Kyler Murray. That's a difference with him and Kyler.
- 14:13Speaker 3: You know, it's fither sized guys who went And so
- 14:15Speaker 3: now what we've done is we made an exception at
- 14:18Speaker 3: number one overall. And if you're the Panthers, maybe you're
- 14:22Speaker 3: mad because you're like, he's number on pig he should
- 14:24Speaker 3: be able to do that. But then you're like, well
- 14:25Speaker 3: look at what he was and when he showed us
- 14:28Speaker 3: in college yeah, he didn't necessarily fit what is normal,
- 14:32Speaker 3: what is normally a number one overall pit.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and I look at you know, I think we
- 14:37Speaker 1: all also got enambered with the way that, you know,
- 14:39Speaker 1: how mature he is and the way he handled himself,
- 14:42Speaker 1: and like you look at that, that's number one pick
- 14:44Speaker 1: material like that. Even if the frame wasn't, the mental
- 14:47Speaker 1: makeup seemed to be. And and then when you throw
- 14:50Speaker 1: the talent in there, and we saw it many, you know,
- 14:53Speaker 1: plenty of times at Alabama. The the arm, talent, the
- 14:56Speaker 1: you know, the ability to create, it's all there. But
- 14:59Speaker 1: you know, he was playing with some of the best
- 15:01Speaker 1: players in college football and that is not the case
- 15:04Speaker 1: now in the NFL. And you know, maybe he can
- 15:06Speaker 1: get there. I think I think we all agree that
- 15:08Speaker 1: there's a chance he can get there. They just they
- 15:10Speaker 1: now have to figure out more than anything, You've got
- 15:13Speaker 1: to find a way to get resources to Bryce. And
- 15:18Speaker 1: it's almost to me more important than finding the head
- 15:21Speaker 1: coach at this point.
- 15:22Speaker 3: I've been beating that drum that in Panthers fans. Some
- 15:26Speaker 3: of them get mad, but I'm like, you're gonna have
- 15:28Speaker 3: to take from the defense. I'm sorry, but you have
- 15:30Speaker 3: so much investment and you can't even evaluate him, you know,
- 15:34Speaker 3: forget you know, yeah, you got to get going here.
- 15:38Speaker 3: And look they do. I mean, somebody brought up a
- 15:40Speaker 3: good point. Hey, we keep saying they don't have a
- 15:42Speaker 3: first round pick, but they pick thirty third, which is
- 15:44Speaker 3: close to a first round pick.
- 15:45Speaker 2: That it's a good pick.
- 15:48Speaker 3: But I mean, gosh, you just you don't have you
- 15:50Speaker 3: don't have that number one overall pick that you'd be
- 15:52Speaker 3: staring at. So they've got to be creative. And to me,
- 15:55Speaker 3: they've got to They've got to build up the offense.
- 15:57Speaker 3: If next year we're having this conversation and the Panthers
- 16:00Speaker 3: have won you know, three games, or they're four and
- 16:02Speaker 3: seven or something like that. But Bryce is taking the
- 16:04Speaker 3: next step and you've got him some receivers and you've
- 16:06Speaker 3: got an offensive line in place, and he's making progress.
- 16:09Speaker 3: You've got time now to figure the rest.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Of it out.
- 16:11Speaker 3: But man, you'd hate to have to, you know, lose
- 16:14Speaker 3: him through this whole process, because you gave up an
- 16:16Speaker 3: awful lot and that would be a tough one to
- 16:18Speaker 3: come back from. Anyways, what what plenty of time to
- 16:21Speaker 3: dig into him as we get to the offseason, let's
- 16:23Speaker 3: let's jump into these games. I'll start. I won't go
- 16:25Speaker 3: along here. It's a game I feel like I've seen
- 16:28Speaker 3: a million times calling these Charger games. They lose Sunday
- 16:31Speaker 3: Night Football twenty to ten of the Ravens. It was
- 16:33Speaker 3: closer than that. It was in the fourth quarter Chargers
- 16:37Speaker 3: ball in hand, as you would expect, two thirty three,
- 16:42Speaker 3: down by three, They've got a chance to go down
- 16:46Speaker 3: there and try and at least tie the game, if
- 16:48Speaker 3: not win it. The first play of the drive they
- 16:50Speaker 3: get the ball to the fifty to Erickson. So you're
- 16:53Speaker 3: first and ten at the fifty. You got two minutes left.
- 16:57Speaker 2: You needed more.
- 16:58Speaker 1: It was like two thirty, wasn't it.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Yeah, two thirty three when they started the drive. So,
- 17:02Speaker 3: I mean they they have two and change and they've
- 17:05Speaker 3: got it's un healthy. Yeah, they've got everything. And you've
- 17:09Speaker 3: got a kicker and Cameron Dicker who might be an
- 17:11Speaker 3: All Pro this year. He's been unbelievable. He does not
- 17:13Speaker 3: miss and he's got a huge leg. I mean, you
- 17:15Speaker 3: get you get to the thirty five, it's a layup.
- 17:18Speaker 3: You fifteen yards. You've got four downs to get fifteen yards.
- 17:23Speaker 3: They couldn't do it, and it's a little bit of
- 17:25Speaker 3: a formula buck where I've seen it now Money and
- 17:28Speaker 3: I talked about this on the broadcast, but I've seen it.
- 17:30Speaker 3: With the end of the Miami game when Vic Fangio
- 17:33Speaker 3: heated him up, they heat up the Chargers. They didn't
- 17:36Speaker 3: really have an answer for it. Sacks, you know, it
- 17:39Speaker 3: pretty much ends the game. Then you see the Tennessee
- 17:42Speaker 3: Titans in overtime do it. Saw it again last night,
- 17:44Speaker 3: like teams have started to come after them and they
- 17:46Speaker 3: don't have an answer. You know, whether you want where
- 17:49Speaker 3: you want to put that blame, offensive line, communication, a
- 17:51Speaker 3: back here or there. You know, Herbert just not knowing
- 17:54Speaker 3: that he's he's hot, not having options. I think on
- 17:57Speaker 3: that last one, you know he has Keenan Allen on
- 18:00Speaker 3: an out route, he gets a free runner. He's gonna
- 18:03Speaker 3: have to get it up way before he gets out
- 18:05Speaker 3: of his break. But at that one, you just kind
- 18:07Speaker 3: of got to hope and pray that your receiver can
- 18:09Speaker 3: get his head around and kind of put a little
- 18:10Speaker 3: air under it and give it a shot. But what
- 18:13Speaker 3: I'm getting at is these Charger games have ended very similarly.
- 18:15Speaker 3: The defense was better in this one. I'll give you
- 18:18Speaker 3: the quick take. On the other side of the ball
- 18:19Speaker 3: with the Ravens, I've never seen more slant flat combinations
- 18:25Speaker 3: in an NFL game. You talk about high school football, Buck,
- 18:28Speaker 3: it was unbelievable. I'm like, this is like watching this
- 18:30Speaker 3: is Friday night football out here. They'll they'll marry up
- 18:33Speaker 3: routes where they'll have a little screen to the right
- 18:35Speaker 3: right where you'll have like a bubble, and then the
- 18:37Speaker 3: backside it's just the back in the receiver and they
- 18:40Speaker 3: warm them out with the with some flats. They hit
- 18:44Speaker 3: like three or four slants on that in that backside window.
- 18:48Speaker 3: But it's a I was wondering what the magic was
- 18:50Speaker 3: with Baltimore when I watched him, and obviously this they
- 18:53Speaker 3: had scored thirty plus and five straight games coming to
- 18:55Speaker 3: this one. This was not at their best performance, but
- 18:57Speaker 3: seeing them up front, we'll get to the defense in it,
- 18:59Speaker 3: but offensively, I was amazed at just how they've made
- 19:02Speaker 3: this so simple and so easy back there.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Look, if you want to do, if you want your
- 19:07Speaker 2: quarterback to play well, give him things that he does
- 19:10Speaker 2: really well. Going all the way back to Louisville, DJ
- 19:13Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson is a killer on indbreaking routes. He has
- 19:17Speaker 2: always been like that from Louisville. Whether it's slants, whether
- 19:20Speaker 2: it's digs, post anything that's going towards the middle of
- 19:23Speaker 2: the field. That is when he's at his best where
- 19:26Speaker 2: he has always struggled as anything that is outside the
- 19:29Speaker 2: numbers outbreaking away from him, running towards the sideline, that's
- 19:32Speaker 2: not his jam. And the Baltimore Ravens have said, I'm
- 19:36Speaker 2: going to make you a good passer by putting in
- 19:39Speaker 2: route concepts that you throw really well, and until a
- 19:42Speaker 2: defense or a series of defenses take that away, he's
- 19:45Speaker 2: going to be efficient. He's going to be effective. And
- 19:47Speaker 2: this offense is going to contain to movie score points.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think you know you find a way
- 19:54Speaker 1: to get the ball in the hands as eight Flowers.
- 19:56Speaker 1: That helps too. And you know it figures that he
- 19:58Speaker 1: gets the first week. None of us have selected Zay
- 20:00Speaker 1: Flowers in the fantasy draft. You oh no, I.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Thought you got tank Dale. I thought you took Tank
- 20:09Speaker 2: Dale took you did? Do you need to do?
- 20:11Speaker 3: You remember last year you get you got how do
- 20:13Speaker 3: you take two Ravens? You took two Ravens. You called
- 20:14Speaker 3: the charger Mitchell and I took Zay Flowers. Wait a minute,
- 20:18Speaker 3: who took tang Dale?
- 20:20Speaker 1: I think you did? You did because it against your bags.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, I violated the code. I violated the
- 20:27Speaker 3: code in one. That's the only difference. He got it, Yeah,
- 20:30Speaker 3: he got it. He caught a buy I mean he
- 20:31Speaker 3: caught a bomb.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and then took one of the house, you know,
- 20:34Speaker 1: with his speed. And so I look at it is
- 20:39Speaker 1: it's simplicity in scheme, and it's simplicity and like, let's
- 20:42Speaker 1: get the ball in the hands of our most electric cleanmaker.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And that's what they do.
- 20:47Speaker 2: And they do it.
- 20:47Speaker 3: They do it simple on offense and complex on defense
- 20:50Speaker 3: because they give you a lot on either side.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Didn't the Chargers defense on the whole play a little
- 20:54Speaker 1: bit better?
- 20:54Speaker 3: And they played great? Yeah, they played much better. I mean, look,
- 20:57Speaker 3: they had them in the Ravens had literally had thirteen
- 20:59Speaker 3: points with two minutes left, right, I mean, that was it,
- 21:02Speaker 3: that was it. They got one late.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Win that game with Justin Herbert as your quarterback.
- 21:06Speaker 3: If you're not question, no question. And they have lost
- 21:09Speaker 3: so many of these games. It's their sixth game this
- 21:12Speaker 3: year they've lost by three or fewer points, Like so
- 21:15Speaker 3: I here's here's the interesting one for you. I had
- 21:18Speaker 3: uh and Buck. I want to get your take on this.
- 21:21Speaker 3: I had Lamar, I had Lamar. We had Rod Woodson,
- 21:24Speaker 3: our buddy, on the pregame show, and I said, Rod, look,
- 21:28Speaker 3: Rod Woodson, hall of famer, and people don't realize he
- 21:30Speaker 3: coached as well. One of the smartest football players I've
- 21:34Speaker 3: ever been around. I said, Rod, what do you attribute
- 21:38Speaker 3: all these close losses to? And it's been going on
- 21:42Speaker 3: for a while now, not just this year, but going back,
- 21:45Speaker 3: and he said, to me, that has nothing to do
- 21:47Speaker 3: with coaching. It was interesting. He said, there needs to
- 21:51Speaker 3: be a player on offense and on the defense. That's
- 21:54Speaker 3: the leader, that the leader that says this stops, it's over,
- 21:58Speaker 3: this is not happening. They taken roll, they take the reins.
- 22:00Speaker 3: He said. Now, he's all from the outside and he
- 22:03Speaker 3: does not around the Chargers, but he said, I think
- 22:05Speaker 3: he would Khalil Mack when he was coaching with the Raiders.
- 22:08Speaker 3: So he said, Khalil Mack, unbelievable player. Maybe maybe maybe
- 22:11Speaker 3: on his way to being a Hall of Fame player.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Not a vocal guy, you know, justin Herbert from the outside,
- 22:16Speaker 3: not not a big vocal guy, like so Joey Bosa
- 22:20Speaker 3: not really a big vocal guy. Derwin is kind of
- 22:22Speaker 3: that guy. But they were just he was just kind
- 22:24Speaker 3: of saying, like, who's the who stops it? Like, who
- 22:27Speaker 3: is the guy who stops it? And he give examples
- 22:29Speaker 3: of like ray Lewis and you know the great players
- 22:31Speaker 3: he's played with. That's it, Like that's not happening and
- 22:34Speaker 3: he he But it was fascinating to me that he
- 22:36Speaker 3: just said, this is not a coaching thing. There's a
- 22:39Speaker 3: player thing. When you're losing this many close games, he
- 22:41Speaker 3: put it on the players, which from a player I
- 22:43Speaker 3: thought was an interesting opinion.
- 22:46Speaker 2: So I will say, like we always here, and I've
- 22:50Speaker 2: heard the best coaches say, hey man, it's a player's game,
- 22:52Speaker 2: Like ultimately, our job is to give you the tools
- 22:55Speaker 2: and then you go play. And DJ we've talked about it.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Rhet has been on the pipe, we've talked about it.
- 23:00Speaker 2: We talked about quarterbacks who have that not over my
- 23:03Speaker 2: dead body mentality, or we equate it to the guy
- 23:07Speaker 2: that is always on pickup. You give him any four
- 23:09Speaker 2: but they always find a way to win. At some point.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Your best players have to do that, like you demand more,
- 23:16Speaker 2: you expect more from your best players, and so I
- 23:20Speaker 2: can agree with Rod in that at some point it
- 23:23Speaker 2: comes down to making plays. And so we saw the
- 23:25Speaker 2: conversation that Minca picked Fitzpatrick had with Terrell Austin in
- 23:30Speaker 2: the Pittsburgh game a couple weeks ago when he's telling him,
- 23:33Speaker 2: you need to call this. Somebody has to be able
- 23:36Speaker 2: to take them rains and say, coach, just what we're doing.
- 23:39Speaker 2: We got it, we'll go fix it, we'll go make
- 23:40Speaker 2: you right. And until somebody does that, they'll continue to
- 23:45Speaker 2: have these issues.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Now, it's interesting, it's a fascinating case study. But again
- 23:51Speaker 3: we've talked about it a bunch, but that Ravens defense
- 23:53Speaker 3: on the biggest play of the game, they've got seven
- 23:55Speaker 3: hundred pounds of droppers, they've got those two bigs touching
- 23:59Speaker 3: and dropping off and the coverage, and they've got a
- 24:01Speaker 3: free runner coming off the edge to really ice the game,
- 24:04Speaker 3: win the game for him. So it is complex, it's complicated.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Ro Kwan Patrick queen is they're legit in the middle
- 24:09Speaker 3: of the defense. I don't think their secondary is great,
- 24:14Speaker 3: but you know, I think the safeties are really good.
- 24:15Speaker 3: I think corner and Martin Humphrey didn't play, but I
- 24:17Speaker 3: think at corner there's you know, against some some premier
- 24:20Speaker 3: passing team. I think they you know, That's why it's fascinating, man.
- 24:24Speaker 3: It's all these teams in the AFC have flaws. I mean,
- 24:27Speaker 3: that's the best team in the AFC right now. It's
- 24:29Speaker 3: not a perfect team. So it'll be interesting to see.
- 24:32Speaker 3: All right, Buck, how about your game Jags and Texans?
- 24:35Speaker 2: Okay, so you just go from talking we were talking
- 24:37Speaker 2: about the best players taking over and kind of making
- 24:40Speaker 2: it happen. DJ. What I saw was a quarterbacking exhibition
- 24:44Speaker 2: between two young quarterbacks that you have to be excited about.
- 24:47Speaker 2: I'll talk about Trevor Lawrence first. Trevor Lawres certainly has
- 24:51Speaker 2: heard the outside noise. And the reason why I can
- 24:55Speaker 2: say that is to me, it took place at the
- 24:58Speaker 2: coin toss, so you know, like in the pros, it's
- 25:01Speaker 2: not really contentious when you go and shake hands or whatever.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Trevor Lawrens was short and sweet when it came to
- 25:06Speaker 2: shaking hands with the other team. Erva Lawrence was there
- 25:08Speaker 2: to stand on business and he was playing. And I
- 25:11Speaker 2: can tell you it is the best of these played
- 25:14Speaker 2: in a long time Ken Looking at.
- 25:16Speaker 1: You, I don't mean to cut you off, Buck, but
- 25:18Speaker 1: you know what that sounds like exactly what we were just
- 25:21Speaker 1: talking about. That's an over my dead body type of performance.
- 25:24Speaker 1: It was go ahead.
- 25:25Speaker 2: I will say this without personally talking to Trevor. Trevor
- 25:28Speaker 2: Lawrence went to Houston to show and prove that, hey,
- 25:31Speaker 2: before y'all discord me. No, I'm okay, I'm gonna do it.
- 25:35Speaker 2: And he scores a touchdown early and he starts barking
- 25:39Speaker 2: at the fans. That's the Trevor that I like, because
- 25:43Speaker 2: I saw it last year when the Jags were making
- 25:45Speaker 2: the playoff runt in Tennessee. In Nashville, the Jags were
- 25:49Speaker 2: winning and somebody was talking to him. He just pointed
- 25:52Speaker 2: to the scoreboard and walked off, and I was like, oh,
- 25:56Speaker 2: Trevor got like a little got like a little yeah him.
- 25:59Speaker 2: So so Trevor was on his game like that. CJ.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Stroud DJ whatever we thought CJ. Stroud was gonna be
- 26:07Speaker 2: in the draft process, we need to add five more
- 26:11Speaker 2: points to the total score because what CJ. Stroud is doing.
- 26:15Speaker 2: And now that I listen back to the commentary about
- 26:18Speaker 2: oh he's not athletic, he doesn't move. DJ. What he
- 26:22Speaker 2: is is he is going to be the next quarterback
- 26:24Speaker 2: that gives everybody problems because he's athletic enough to run,
- 26:29Speaker 2: but when he runs, his eyes are down the field
- 26:32Speaker 2: and so all he's doing he's like one of those
- 26:35Speaker 2: fairy tales with the lady that's hanging just luring you
- 26:38Speaker 2: to the line of scrimmage, and he is looking to
- 26:40Speaker 2: bring you up so he can throw it over your head.
- 26:44Speaker 2: He has tanked deal on a sixty five yard pass
- 26:47Speaker 2: that is eventually called back. But DJ he's running around,
- 26:51Speaker 2: Oh I'm gonna take off. I'm gonna take off. You
- 26:53Speaker 2: drop coverage and he throws a bomb And I was like, Oh,
- 26:57Speaker 2: that's how they're scoring all these because he is basically
- 27:02Speaker 2: doing the stuff that Pat Mahomes does. Not the same
- 27:05Speaker 2: style player, but you know how Pat Mahomes runs around,
- 27:08Speaker 2: but he's running and just kind of waiting for stuff
- 27:10Speaker 2: to crack. That's what he's doing. And he's mastered that
- 27:14Speaker 2: part of the game very early. These two young quarterbacks,
- 27:17Speaker 2: they'll be duking it out for a long time. But man, C. J.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Stroud is even better than I could imagine him being
- 27:23Speaker 2: at this stage of his.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Career, and this wasn't even his best. You know, he's
- 27:27Speaker 1: had He's had better games this year. Now, I will
- 27:30Speaker 1: say that I felt like he he held onto the
- 27:33Speaker 1: ball and tried and had some magic in the pocket
- 27:37Speaker 1: getting getting away from some rush. More so in this
- 27:40Speaker 1: game than in any we've seen thus far this season.
- 27:41Speaker 1: It felt like he was always on the move, like
- 27:44Speaker 1: and it wasn't necessarily a design move, right, he was like,
- 27:47Speaker 1: all right, let me let me get out of here
- 27:48Speaker 1: and break out of the pocket. Let me escape out
- 27:51Speaker 1: of here. And a lot of times he was making
- 27:52Speaker 1: it work. But credit the Jags also for providing that
- 27:56Speaker 1: pressure to not let him sit back there and use
- 27:59Speaker 1: that elite accuracy ball placement to just dice you up
- 28:01Speaker 1: from the pocket. Josh Allen was getting through and the
- 28:04Speaker 1: Texans have been pretty good and they lost Titus Howard
- 28:08Speaker 1: early in the game, which I think I probably heard
- 28:10Speaker 1: a little bit. You had to put you Scruggs in
- 28:11Speaker 1: there playing his first ball, first real NFL ball of
- 28:15Speaker 1: his career, and he was you know, he's the he
- 28:17Speaker 1: was the starting center coming in gets hurt. He comes
- 28:19Speaker 1: in at left guard, first game off igh R. So
- 28:23Speaker 1: I'm I'm glad you brought that up with CJ, because
- 28:25Speaker 1: I just I feel like we we tried right. We
- 28:29Speaker 1: tried to talk about that Northwestern game. We tried to
- 28:33Speaker 1: talk about the Georgia game where he showed you that
- 28:36Speaker 1: he can use the like he didn't have to in Ohio.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Steam.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Yeah, and he's got you know what, you know, you
- 28:43Speaker 3: know what side note and then we'll get moving. I
- 28:46Speaker 3: know we're behind schedule, but the I was thinking about
- 28:50Speaker 3: this the other day in college football, I think it's
- 28:53Speaker 3: going to make scouting easier with this realignment. Think about it, like,
- 28:57Speaker 3: and I think about think about the quarterback position. You're
- 29:00Speaker 3: going to have sc UCLA, Washington, Oregon going into the
- 29:05Speaker 3: Big Ten. So all those teams now are going to
- 29:08Speaker 3: be playing NFL players, NFL defenses. Now Oklahoma which has
- 29:12Speaker 3: produced a lot of quarterbacks, Texas which with Sarkeys and
- 29:15Speaker 3: you gotta believe they're gonna have quarterbacks they go to
- 29:17Speaker 3: the SEC. Like in some ways, I think it's going
- 29:21Speaker 3: to make scouting somewhat easier because you're going to see
- 29:24Speaker 3: good on good every single week. You're going to see
- 29:27Speaker 3: these guys playing against real, real teams.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Man. I mean to that point. I think it even
- 29:30Speaker 2: changes the way you you stock your department. I think
- 29:32Speaker 2: you we talk about West and Midwest and all that,
- 29:35Speaker 2: you almost have to have an SEC scout and a
- 29:38Speaker 2: big ten scout a couple of it. So then and
- 29:41Speaker 2: then when you think about the cross checking, like how
- 29:43Speaker 2: you can just sit and I mean red, like I
- 29:47Speaker 2: would say this, like I would do the first loop
- 29:49Speaker 2: and then I would post up at sc the second
- 29:50Speaker 2: loop and just watch these other teams come in and
- 29:52Speaker 2: watch the film or whatever, Like you're gonna have scouts
- 29:55Speaker 2: to gonna be able to see all of these big games.
- 29:57Speaker 2: And so I think you're right. It's going to make
- 29:59Speaker 2: it a lot easier to see these teams, these quarterbacks
- 30:03Speaker 2: play in big games, and it should make I wist say,
- 30:06Speaker 2: make for an easier evaluation, but a more thorough evaluation
- 30:09Speaker 2: of the position. Yeah.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Yes, and you maybe give your scouts the first two
- 30:12Speaker 1: weeks of the season off because nobody's going to be
- 30:15Speaker 1: scheduling heavy haymakers in the first three weeks.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Of the season.
- 30:19Speaker 1: What the conference schedules coming.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Yeah, well that's a good point, all right, Squeezing one
- 30:23Speaker 3: more here before we go to a break Red, Let's
- 30:25Speaker 3: go Chiefs Raiders.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Yeah, Chiefs Raiders. Interesting one. I mean, boy, the Raiders
- 30:31Speaker 1: wish they could have just run right back into the
- 30:32Speaker 1: tunnel after the first quarter. I mean, they were don wheels.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Was it was incredible. The first fifteen minutes of this game.
- 30:40Speaker 1: They ran twenty two plays, the Chiefs ran four. They
- 30:43Speaker 1: had three. They had four plays for zero yards. I mean,
- 30:46Speaker 1: you hold Patrick Mahomes to that kind of output in
- 30:49Speaker 1: any quarter of any game, You're feeling pretty good then that.
- 30:52Speaker 1: The rest of it was just kind of weird everything.
- 30:55Speaker 1: It was not an overly explosive game on either side
- 30:58Speaker 1: of The Raiders did get down the fielduple of times,
- 31:00Speaker 1: but like neither team really wins that battle or dominates
- 31:04Speaker 1: that battle. The run game wasn't as much of a factor.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Although you know, you said, see Josh Jacobs, you know,
- 31:10Speaker 1: it was good to see him kind of get some
- 31:11Speaker 1: run here and find a way to at least calm
- 31:14Speaker 1: things down for Aidan O'Connell who was on fire in
- 31:16Speaker 1: the first quarter and got it. You know, it wasn't
- 31:18Speaker 1: quite as good the rest of the way. The other
- 31:21Speaker 1: thing that I'll say about it is this was obviously
- 31:23Speaker 1: this was the h This was the Rashi Rice game.
- 31:27Speaker 1: This is where we found out who this second target
- 31:30Speaker 1: is behind Travis Kelce. Rashi Rice ten targets eight catches
- 31:34Speaker 1: his first one hundred yard game. They were trying to
- 31:36Speaker 1: get the ball in his hands. And I love what
- 31:39Speaker 1: Andy Reid said today that Rashie Rice has been getting
- 31:42Speaker 1: better and better every week, making himself more Patrick friendly, right,
- 31:49Speaker 1: figuring out what his quarterback wants, how he can present
- 31:52Speaker 1: himself to the quarterback in a fashion where he can
- 31:55Speaker 1: then use his talent in his skill set to be
- 31:59Speaker 1: a product to factor for this offense. They were getting
- 32:02Speaker 1: him on crossers, they were getting him on quick screens,
- 32:05Speaker 1: and they even had him chipping on Max Crosby side
- 32:08Speaker 1: and then delay releasing as a checkdown. And he caught
- 32:12Speaker 1: a couple of balls on those types of plays because
- 32:15Speaker 1: he was making himself available to Patrick Mahomes, like on
- 32:18Speaker 1: some of the plays you're talking about Bucky with CJ.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Stroud where he's kind of waiting, wait and wait and
- 32:23Speaker 1: doesn't break open. Bang let me hit it to Rashid
- 32:24Speaker 1: Rice and he'll pick up eight yards. He's got a
- 32:27Speaker 1: physicality to his game after the catch. That's pretty impressive.
- 32:31Speaker 1: So I just and again, it did feel like for
- 32:35Speaker 1: the Chiefs it was back to that patience game plan.
- 32:38Speaker 1: They had four touchdowns on five drives from the second
- 32:41Speaker 1: quarter to the start of the fourth, and they went
- 32:43Speaker 1: twelve plays, eight plays, ten plays, six plays, and they
- 32:47Speaker 1: just found a way to work the ball down the
- 32:48Speaker 1: field and get the ball into the paint. And so
- 32:52Speaker 1: I think Rashie Rice is the biggest development that I
- 32:54Speaker 1: had from this game.
- 32:56Speaker 3: No, that's legit. That's a good win for the Kansas
- 32:59Speaker 3: City chief It's not easy inside the division. By the way,
- 33:01Speaker 3: the Raiders just cut Marcus Peters, so they decided to
- 33:04Speaker 3: move on from Marcus Peters there, so that one, that
- 33:07Speaker 3: one's over all. Right, let's take a break, we'll come back.
- 33:10Speaker 3: We'll jump into the Eagles and the Bills, all right, guys,
- 33:17Speaker 3: I would say this is the game of the day
- 33:19Speaker 3: in weather, cold, wet, the Eagles they beat the Bills
- 33:23Speaker 3: thirty seven to thirty four. There's a lot of different
- 33:26Speaker 3: ways you can go in this game. I'll leave some
- 33:27Speaker 3: of the storyline stuff to you, guys. I went back
- 33:30Speaker 3: this morning, though, and I wanted to watch someone who
- 33:33Speaker 3: I think might be one of the more underappreciated players,
- 33:36Speaker 3: not just on the Eagles, but maybe in the NFL
- 33:38Speaker 3: asked DeVante Smith, so aj Brown gets a lot of attention.
- 33:42Speaker 3: He's arguably, you know, if not the best, He's one
- 33:45Speaker 3: of the top three receivers in the NFL. Jalen gets
- 33:48Speaker 3: his attention, the pass rush gets theirs, even you know,
- 33:51Speaker 3: Slay the secondary everybody you get the head coach Siriana
- 33:54Speaker 3: gets credit.
- 33:54Speaker 2: How he gets credit.
- 33:55Speaker 3: I feel like Davante Smith gets lost a little bit
- 33:57Speaker 3: in this and when I watched him is somebody who's
- 34:00Speaker 3: sees keenan Allen each and every week. It's hard to
- 34:02Speaker 3: explain it because we can talk about guys being great
- 34:06Speaker 3: route runners. You can talk about size, speed, all that stuff.
- 34:08Speaker 3: When you're breaking down receivers, there's a feel to that position,
- 34:12Speaker 3: and Buck you can speak to it better than I can.
- 34:14Speaker 3: But there's just an understanding and a feel to your game.
- 34:17Speaker 3: And it's so subtle as to the point when he's
- 34:20Speaker 3: on over. He's on an over route and he can
- 34:23Speaker 3: see where Jalen is and how he's moving, and he'll
- 34:25Speaker 3: gear it down because he's not in a sprint to
- 34:27Speaker 3: get to the sideline and you have nowhere to go
- 34:30Speaker 3: with the throw. He can throttle down. He's got an
- 34:33Speaker 3: unbelievable spatial awareness.
- 34:35Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 34:35Speaker 3: You might know, buck what his basketball background is. He
- 34:38Speaker 3: one hundred percent must have played a lot of hoops
- 34:40Speaker 3: because he feels and moves in space it's exceptional. Then
- 34:44Speaker 3: you get with that the pristine route running and the hands.
- 34:47Speaker 3: He's got phenomenal hands, as we've seen across the league.
- 34:51Speaker 3: That's not something we should take for granted. But he
- 34:53Speaker 3: goes seven for a Bucko six in that game, and
- 34:56Speaker 3: I just came away after watching it going he needs
- 34:59Speaker 3: some love. He's a good football player, man.
- 35:02Speaker 2: He is a good football player in DJ He did
- 35:04Speaker 2: play a little basketball. He did, he did? He did?
- 35:08Speaker 2: He just said he does. He loved basketball. He's a
- 35:09Speaker 2: good time basketball player coming up, and you can see
- 35:13Speaker 2: that in his game and one. We talked about them
- 35:16Speaker 2: multiple times, why multi sport players are favorable, why we
- 35:20Speaker 2: love them, and this guy in process because those skills translate.
- 35:23Speaker 2: But the field part of playing wide receiver. I think
- 35:26Speaker 2: that's what really made him very attractive during the draft process.
- 35:30Speaker 2: We can talk about the size, because the size was
- 35:31Speaker 2: a concern, but I just remember, you know, when he
- 35:35Speaker 2: took over at Alabama. He was the number two. Jayalen
- 35:38Speaker 2: Widell gets hurt and he has to become the number one,
- 35:41Speaker 2: and that's when he wins the Heisman Trophy. He exploded.
- 35:45Speaker 2: He exploded when they made him the focal point. So
- 35:49Speaker 2: the route run ability, to play making ability, the ability
- 35:53Speaker 2: to kind of like be exactly what the quarterback needs
- 35:56Speaker 2: in those moments, it makes sense. And I've always contended
- 35:59Speaker 2: that the Eat they don't just have a number one
- 36:01Speaker 2: wide receiver, they have code number one. I think they
- 36:04Speaker 2: share the more quie even though gets all the love,
- 36:11Speaker 2: I think DeVonta Smith is just as capable as a
- 36:13Speaker 2: number one receiver in his own light.
- 36:16Speaker 1: So I agree with you. I mean, I love Devonte
- 36:19Speaker 1: Smith's game. I mean it does feel silky smooth, you
- 36:22Speaker 1: know at times, and and you guys are talking about
- 36:24Speaker 1: that a little bit, in the way that he runs
- 36:25Speaker 1: the routes and that spatial awareness. I just kind of
- 36:27Speaker 1: want to go back. It just feels like a theme
- 36:29Speaker 1: now that that that we brought it up with with
- 36:32Speaker 1: these you know that Rod Woodson con I mean, is
- 36:34Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts maybe the best example of a guy who
- 36:38Speaker 1: he's not losing, He's just not gonna do it. In fact,
- 36:41Speaker 1: he hasn't. He has now won fourteen consecutive games against
- 36:45Speaker 1: teams with a winning record. That's the most and the
- 36:47Speaker 1: longest streak by any quarterbacks since at least nineteen fifty.
- 36:51Speaker 1: They are also his best.
- 36:53Speaker 3: He's at his best in winning time too. Like it's however,
- 36:56Speaker 3: you know, grimy, the game can be on winning downs
- 36:58Speaker 3: and winning time.
- 37:00Speaker 2: I bet against that, dude.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Eagles five and zero this year when trailing at the
- 37:04Speaker 1: half and Jalen Hurts is Philly's the only team in
- 37:09Speaker 1: the NFL with winning record when down at the half,
- 37:11Speaker 1: most of the wins when most of most wins of
- 37:13Speaker 1: any team when trailing at the half. I mean, you
- 37:16Speaker 1: should see what the rest of the record is. The
- 37:18Speaker 1: rest of the NFL has a combined two thirteen win
- 37:21Speaker 1: percentage when they're trailing at the half. The Eagles are undefeated.
- 37:25Speaker 1: I just think that is a mentally mentally tough team.
- 37:28Speaker 1: And it starts right there with Jalen Hurtz diege.
- 37:31Speaker 3: Yeah, one hundred percent. And look, let's let's flip it
- 37:34Speaker 3: over quickly. On the other side here, Josh Allen deserves
- 37:38Speaker 3: some love for what he did in this game. You
- 37:40Speaker 3: watch the runs. I broke down his runs in this game.
- 37:42Speaker 3: Now that the stats, what did he end up with?
- 37:45Speaker 3: Eighty one rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns? But these runs
- 37:48Speaker 3: are not just like standard runs. Third and ten scramble
- 37:51Speaker 3: for a first down, Third and eleven takes off for
- 37:55Speaker 3: a sixteen yard touchdown, Third nine scramble for a first down.
- 37:59Speaker 3: Like these are not you know, QB Power's not designed
- 38:01Speaker 3: runs that is. And again using this theme, he didn't
- 38:05Speaker 3: win the game, but it was a will on his
- 38:07Speaker 3: part there that it was like he put everything he
- 38:10Speaker 3: had into that thing and was trying to make it
- 38:12Speaker 3: happen and put up a boatload of points. Put up
- 38:15Speaker 3: thirty four points should be good enough. It wasn't on
- 38:18Speaker 3: this day. But man, that's a that's a Bills team.
- 38:22Speaker 3: It's hard to explain. Somebody used the analogy buck, which
- 38:25Speaker 3: which pains me, but yet I get it because the
- 38:27Speaker 3: Bills are the Padres this year. Like the Bills point
- 38:30Speaker 3: differential is off the charts. Their record should say one thing,
- 38:34Speaker 3: but it doesn't. They're six and six, which is somewhat baffling.
- 38:39Speaker 3: You know, I do think it's a little premature. I
- 38:41Speaker 3: think people they want to jump off the McDermott bandwagon here.
- 38:45Speaker 3: I mean, the guys won a lot of football games,
- 38:47Speaker 3: and that team has an identity. They're just in a
- 38:50Speaker 3: they're in a weird spot right now. I think the
- 38:51Speaker 3: Matt Mulano is our old friend Dave Damaschik used to
- 38:54Speaker 3: do the jinga piece. Who would have thought that Matt
- 38:56Speaker 3: Mulano could be that piece. I mean, he is a
- 38:59Speaker 3: one of the best spikers on the NFL. Yeah, but
- 39:02Speaker 3: Milano is Milano I think is more valuable to them, though,
- 39:04Speaker 3: I would.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Agree Whers And that's the way that they thought it
- 39:08Speaker 1: was because they were like, they were okay to let
- 39:10Speaker 1: Tremaine Edmonds go, and they're like, you know, we need
- 39:12Speaker 1: to pay Matt Mulano. He's the guy that makes this
- 39:14Speaker 1: thing go.
- 39:15Speaker 2: He does he does make it go. And I'll say
- 39:17Speaker 2: this about the Buffalo Bills because everyone is now kind
- 39:21Speaker 2: of on Josh Allen about the turnovers and those things. DJ,
- 39:25Speaker 2: there's certain players that you just have to live with
- 39:26Speaker 2: that you just kind of have to know. It's almost
- 39:28Speaker 2: like having a hitter who's a high volume strikeout guy,
- 39:31Speaker 2: but he's gonna give you forty five to fifty home runs.
- 39:33Speaker 2: You just have to know. Hey, that's part of it.
- 39:34Speaker 2: We're gonna bake that in the equation that's what he is.
- 39:37Speaker 2: I will say, you talk about the identity of the Bills,
- 39:39Speaker 2: even though we're seeing I feel like the last two
- 39:43Speaker 2: weeks we've seen Josh Allen do more of the I'm
- 39:45Speaker 2: the one man show stuff. Maybe that's the identity of
- 39:49Speaker 2: the Bills. Hey, he's going to do everything. He's gonna
- 39:52Speaker 2: put it on his shoulders, he's gonna run around, he's
- 39:53Speaker 2: gonna make plays in those things. Because they have been
- 39:56Speaker 2: a more dangerous team the last two weeks. They've been
- 39:58Speaker 2: a team that I mean, you could argue they should
- 40:00Speaker 2: have won this game. If they win this game, it's
- 40:02Speaker 2: a different conversation that we having about the Buffalo Bills.
- 40:04Speaker 2: But I will say this, and I will issue the
- 40:06Speaker 2: warning to everyone in the AFC. Don't let them get
- 40:10Speaker 2: into tournament. That's a good point because if you let
- 40:13Speaker 2: them get into tournament in a one game scenario, Josh
- 40:16Speaker 2: Allen can knock anybody out. Don't let them get in
- 40:19Speaker 2: because I would not want to be the two seed
- 40:20Speaker 2: to ask to face them in the tournament.
- 40:23Speaker 1: That tip to Joe Brady that offense has been better
- 40:25Speaker 1: the last two weeks. It's that that is hard to
- 40:29Speaker 1: deny at this point.
- 40:31Speaker 3: All Right, I've been super excited about this one. Buck,
- 40:34Speaker 3: how about the Falcons and the Saints? You feel the
- 40:36Speaker 3: excitement in my voice right there?
- 40:38Speaker 2: I do. I love your voice inflection because if you
- 40:40Speaker 2: watched it, you would be excited about it. And the
- 40:42Speaker 2: reason why you trust me, the reason why you would
- 40:46Speaker 2: be excited about it is because Jesse Bas continue to
- 40:48Speaker 2: do what Jesse Bass does. Out Our buddy David little brother,
- 40:56Speaker 2: his little brother threw one out there and Jason Jesse
- 40:58Speaker 2: Bates snacked it and sixt it. He house called. And
- 41:02Speaker 2: if you've watched Jesse Bass the last couple of years,
- 41:04Speaker 2: you're talking about one of the more instinctive playmakers in
- 41:06Speaker 2: the secondary. He's done it and he's been great for
- 41:09Speaker 2: the Falcons in terms of making plays, coming downhill, getting
- 41:12Speaker 2: his hands on the ball. He is doing all of that.
- 41:15Speaker 2: And a Falcons team that is really struggling with their
- 41:17Speaker 2: identity on both sides of the ball, they played a
- 41:20Speaker 2: little more to the identity. I think we had a
- 41:21Speaker 2: b Jhon Robinsons siding. He actually touched the ball a
- 41:24Speaker 2: little bit which was kind of fun to watch considering
- 41:26Speaker 2: how much no figure when he touches the ball, you're
- 41:30Speaker 2: telling me, yeah, how much they gave it to him.
- 41:31Speaker 2: He had nineteen touches, which is always great to see
- 41:34Speaker 2: over twenty one hundred and twenty scrimmage jars. And you know,
- 41:37Speaker 2: if I'm the Falcons, I just kind of look at
- 41:38Speaker 2: him be like, you know what, maybe the ball needs
- 41:40Speaker 2: to go to b John Robinson a little more because
- 41:42Speaker 2: when he gets the ball, it kind of assays the
- 41:44Speaker 2: table for everybody else. And then desm Ritter was solid
- 41:47Speaker 2: enough for them to get to win. Uh you look up,
- 41:49Speaker 2: the Atlanta Falcons are still in the mix.
- 41:52Speaker 1: Yeah, Byjon rushing in receiving touchdown. And the receiving touchdown
- 41:58Speaker 1: comes on maybe Esmond Riders' best throw of his career.
- 42:02Speaker 1: He's getting pressured, he is getting pressured and off his
- 42:05Speaker 1: back foot, knows where Bijon is going to be, knows
- 42:08Speaker 1: he is wide open, and lays a beautiful pillow drops
- 42:11Speaker 1: it right into Bijon's hands for the touchdown. Now Desmond
- 42:16Speaker 1: giveth and Desmond taketh as as well because he has
- 42:21Speaker 1: another red zone interception here on a play on a
- 42:24Speaker 1: throw that just shouldn't even you know, shouldn't should have
- 42:27Speaker 1: just kept it. He'd been better off taking a sack,
- 42:29Speaker 1: kick and field goal, obviously, but Tyron Matthew got one.
- 42:33Speaker 1: He's just he's still he still hasn't worked that stuff
- 42:36Speaker 1: out of the game. But he is giving you some
- 42:40Speaker 1: of those big play moments, like he used his athleticism
- 42:43Speaker 1: to really help propel a couple of drives, so the
- 42:45Speaker 1: Falcons in this game. And then, by the way, pick
- 42:48Speaker 1: six not the only thing on Jesse Bates. He comes
- 42:50Speaker 1: up and probably makes the play of the game punching
- 42:52Speaker 1: out a fumble on Taysom Hill who had just rushed
- 42:56Speaker 1: for a first down. They were about to have a
- 42:57Speaker 1: first and goal inside the ten yard line.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Uh.
- 43:00Speaker 1: In late in the games, either it's either fourth quarter
- 43:03Speaker 1: or late third quarter, and that was a major, major
- 43:07Speaker 1: turning point in that game, and the Falcons figured out
- 43:10Speaker 1: a way to go down to score and win that game.
- 43:13Speaker 3: By the way, I was just thinking out loud here,
- 43:16Speaker 3: if there's been talk that Travis Kelcey could walk away
- 43:19Speaker 3: at the end of the year, if he does retires,
- 43:22Speaker 3: goes off into sunset, if you're the Kansas City Chiefs,
- 43:24Speaker 3: just just just please let me show you what we
- 43:27Speaker 3: can do with with with this tight end here, just
- 43:30Speaker 3: giving him to the Chiefs. Now, yeah, let's just send
- 43:32Speaker 3: them over. Oh no, I'm sitting here. I'm sitting here.
- 43:36Speaker 3: You know this ends up, But Kyle Pitts is gonna
- 43:38Speaker 3: end up with like the Chiefs, the Niners, or like
- 43:41Speaker 3: the Eagles, and it's.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Just gonna be explosion.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Yeah, They're gonna throw them out there and then off
- 43:46Speaker 2: you go and fantness to the Chiefs and the Falcons.
- 43:49Speaker 2: This would be a nice repayment for the Chiefs sending
- 43:53Speaker 2: Tony Gonzalez to the Falcons. This would be this would
- 43:57Speaker 2: be like, remember, you can can get back and we
- 44:00Speaker 2: can we can flip and.
- 44:04Speaker 3: Callback how about how about yeah, Steelers Bengals here, we
- 44:09Speaker 3: got a couple left.
- 44:10Speaker 1: Yeah, just just just really hitting on the Steelers here
- 44:13Speaker 1: because I think, look, I think, you know Jig Browning uh,
- 44:16Speaker 1: I think will credit you know, his his ability to
- 44:19Speaker 1: step in there in a tough situation and keep them competitive.
- 44:21Speaker 1: But they're not scoring enough points and I don't know
- 44:24Speaker 1: that they're going to be able to against at least
- 44:27Speaker 1: the AFC North defenses that they're going to have to
- 44:29Speaker 1: face here in the Browns of Steelers, uh and the
- 44:31Speaker 1: Ravens obviously in the Steelers. In this one, I really
- 44:33Speaker 1: wanted to focus on the offense with obviously the change
- 44:37Speaker 1: in offensive first time this season. Mike Sullivan call in
- 44:41Speaker 1: the place. Yeah, fair point, fair point. Look, I sometimes
- 44:47Speaker 1: I think we get, you know, in on the on
- 44:49Speaker 1: the external side, people get over overly enamored with having
- 44:51Speaker 1: balance on offense. I think it's more like keeping the
- 44:56Speaker 1: defense off balance is really what you're talking about in
- 45:00Speaker 1: that equation, right, And the Steelers did that. Thirty three runs,
- 45:05Speaker 1: thirty three called passes. They kept the Bengals kind of
- 45:10Speaker 1: guessing where they were going. They had some explosives from
- 45:13Speaker 1: Najie Harris. They brought big personnel and they were running
- 45:17Speaker 1: thirteen personnel. They had Pat Fryarmuth back healthy. By the way,
- 45:20Speaker 1: in that big personnel, one of those big time chunk
- 45:23Speaker 1: plays from Najie Harris ends up happening. Pat Fryarmuth I
- 45:26Speaker 1: think was a difference in his game though, and the
- 45:29Speaker 1: way that he was able to operate in the middle
- 45:30Speaker 1: of the field. First couple of targets were on benders
- 45:33Speaker 1: and it was some terrific throws a couple of terrific
- 45:35Speaker 1: throws from Kenny Pickett. Then he's like, he just goes
- 45:37Speaker 1: Travis Kelcey right, and they just set him up a
- 45:39Speaker 1: go find some space in between some zone windows here
- 45:43Speaker 1: and turn around and bank Kenny's dotting him up. He
- 45:47Speaker 1: ends up having a terrific game. Here goes over one
- 45:49Speaker 1: hundred yards and it was just a big piece of
- 45:52Speaker 1: the offensive attack that felt like it was really missing
- 45:55Speaker 1: the last couple of weeks, and so they had it
- 45:58Speaker 1: on the ground, they had it through the air. Just
- 46:00Speaker 1: felt like Steelers offense.
- 46:02Speaker 3: You know how you know when you're a kid. We
- 46:03Speaker 3: played different games around the country, and I don't know
- 46:05Speaker 3: if you guys call it the same thing we did.
- 46:06Speaker 3: Did you guys ever play freeze tag when you're oh yeah,
- 46:09Speaker 3: oh yeah. You know who plays freeze tag? Deontae Johnson.
- 46:13Speaker 3: He's amazing at it. He just he just frozen. Just yeah,
- 46:20Speaker 3: are you still frozen tagged? Okay, there you go, I'm done?
- 46:24Speaker 3: What in the heck was that?
- 46:26Speaker 2: Buck? Take me into the meeting? All right?
- 46:27Speaker 3: This is this is why I love having Buck as
- 46:29Speaker 3: a friend, because I can say take me into the
- 46:32Speaker 3: film room. You guys, watch tape you're in the receiver
- 46:36Speaker 3: room and that comes up. What the heck is said
- 46:39Speaker 3: in there?
- 46:40Speaker 2: Nothing? You don't even have to say anything because DJ,
- 46:43Speaker 2: you just let it play and then you just pause
- 46:45Speaker 2: it and it becomes that uncomfortable silence, right, it's uncomfortable
- 46:49Speaker 2: silence where the peers are looking at the tape. He's
- 46:52Speaker 2: having to look at the tape and everyone is able
- 46:54Speaker 2: to hold people accountable by saying, what are we doing?
- 46:57Speaker 2: Like what like what kind of effort is that? And
- 46:59Speaker 2: I and I'll be honest with you. So weird because
- 47:02Speaker 2: the Steelers are such a franchise that's kind of button up.
- 47:05Speaker 2: They have a toughness about him, but man, it always
- 47:07Speaker 2: seems like they have one or two guys that the receivers.
- 47:10Speaker 3: Look at all the receivers they've had, that they've had stuff.
- 47:14Speaker 2: Yeah, And so he's been kind of like the squeaky
- 47:16Speaker 2: wheel of Lake, complaining about like lack of touches and
- 47:18Speaker 2: the ball, but never acknowledging his own shortcomings when it
- 47:21Speaker 2: comes to drops and those things. He dropped a touchdown
- 47:25Speaker 2: in this game. He's frustrating to watch. I mean, he's
- 47:29Speaker 2: he's a good player, but I don't think he is
- 47:32Speaker 2: as good as maybe he portrays or his attitude gives off.
- 47:35Speaker 2: And so I just wonder, I wonder with that, like, look,
- 47:39Speaker 2: he's there because they signed him to a big deal,
- 47:41Speaker 2: but it has to be a kind of annoying for
- 47:45Speaker 2: some of the Steelers, like some of the antics and
- 47:46Speaker 2: some of the lack of effort that has been put
- 47:49Speaker 2: on by him.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a tough one. And you know, we we
- 47:53Speaker 1: didn't see that happen because we we had this game
- 47:55Speaker 1: on Game Day Live. We had it happened live, and
- 47:57Speaker 1: we didn't We didn't see that because we got we
- 47:59Speaker 1: were so focused on the fact whether Jalen Warn't actually
- 48:02Speaker 1: fumbled the football or not, and obviously he did. And
- 48:06Speaker 1: you know, you get Deontay Johnson just walks right by it.
- 48:08Speaker 2: That's yeah, the.
- 48:10Speaker 3: Worst, even worse than that, as the beginning of the
- 48:11Speaker 3: play didn't even come off the line of scrimmage right
- 48:13Speaker 3: stood sitting there not blocking anyways. That was a bad look,
- 48:18Speaker 3: but overall a much better day for the Pittsburgh Steelers offense.
- 48:22Speaker 3: And hey, the Steelers win games, man, they just keep
- 48:24Speaker 3: winning ball games finding a way to do it. Mike Tomlin,
- 48:27Speaker 3: God bless him, he's figured it out man, Well, I
- 48:31Speaker 3: think this is the last one for US here Broncos
- 48:34Speaker 3: and Browns twenty nine to twelve. I took the Russell
- 48:37Speaker 3: Wilson angle on this. The numbers are not going to
- 48:39Speaker 3: be anything impressive. Thirteen to twenty two, one hundred and
- 48:41Speaker 3: thirty four yards a touchdown, eleven carries, which is a
- 48:44Speaker 3: lot only thirty four yards, but did have a rushing
- 48:47Speaker 3: touchdown on a fumble, So I went with the on
- 48:49Speaker 3: pace numbers for US. He's on pace for thirty three
- 48:52Speaker 3: ninety eight yards, thirty one touchdowns, six picks, completing sixty
- 48:57Speaker 3: eight point three percent of his passes. He's thirty four
- 49:00Speaker 3: years old, his last five games seventy point two percent
- 49:04Speaker 3: completion percentage, eight hundred and ninety four yards, eight touchdowns,
- 49:07Speaker 3: no picks. I wrote down in my notes, I went
- 49:10Speaker 3: and watched all of his dropbacks in this game, and
- 49:14Speaker 3: I wrote, Ah, it's Alex Smith, Like this is this
- 49:17Speaker 3: is kind of how he's playing right now. Is Alex Smith.
- 49:20Speaker 3: He's efficient, He uses legs, you know, to get He
- 49:23Speaker 3: got out of a bunch of sacks in this game,
- 49:25Speaker 3: and some of them maybe got a yard or two.
- 49:27Speaker 3: Some of them he threw away, but some hidden yardage there.
- 49:30Speaker 3: With his athleticism not super aggressive, I was a little surprising.
- 49:34Speaker 3: I think they they always start him off with a layup.
- 49:37Speaker 3: They did it again in this game. They give him
- 49:39Speaker 3: a nice easy screen on the first play. The next
- 49:41Speaker 3: one they actually took a shot and they ended up
- 49:43Speaker 3: getting a pass interference call. But for again, the majority
- 49:46Speaker 3: of the game under control. Protect the football, use your legs.
- 49:49Speaker 3: If you have to marry that up with a great defense,
- 49:52Speaker 3: marry that up with the you know, with the coordinator
- 49:54Speaker 3: that can protect you. I'm like, this is what that
- 49:56Speaker 3: felt like.
- 49:57Speaker 2: Oh you know, you know what it feels like and
- 49:58Speaker 2: what it sounds like. It sounds like Russell Wilson from
- 50:00Speaker 2: his early years in Seattle, when the Garland dose gas
- 50:03Speaker 2: were for trying to protect Russ against himself before there
- 50:06Speaker 2: was a course of let Russ cook. It's funny how
- 50:09Speaker 2: it comes full circle and Russ is playing better because
- 50:12Speaker 2: Russ is playing like they wanted him to play in Seattle.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Hats off to Sean Payton for stealing some pages from
- 50:18Speaker 2: the original blueprint to get Russell Wilson playing well. But
- 50:23Speaker 2: they're doing those things that he can do well at
- 50:26Speaker 2: his age and I think the Alex Smith example is
- 50:29Speaker 2: great because Alex Smith won a lot of games just
- 50:31Speaker 2: being in the fishing quarterback. And what the Broncos need
- 50:34Speaker 2: from russ Nell is more mental than physical. They need
- 50:38Speaker 2: him to be And I hate to say this because
- 50:39Speaker 2: you're paying whatever two hundred and some million for Russell,
- 50:43Speaker 2: but he just needs to be a game manager plus right,
- 50:46Speaker 2: be a game manager for three quarters of the game
- 50:50Speaker 2: and then in the fourth quarter, just be the playmaker
- 50:52Speaker 2: when we need you to be. And if he's that,
- 50:54Speaker 2: and the rest of the pieces of the team appear
- 50:57Speaker 2: to be even better than we gave them credit for,
- 51:00Speaker 2: this team can win. The receivers to running backs, the
- 51:02Speaker 2: defense all playing well. He's doing a good job of managing.
- 51:05Speaker 2: That's right into winter.
- 51:07Speaker 3: Do you guys remember this though? And Drew was still
- 51:10Speaker 3: playing pretty well in the twenty seventeen draft, which was
- 51:13Speaker 3: the Mahomes draft, right, you remember the Saints were trying
- 51:15Speaker 3: to trade up to get up there for Mahomes. And
- 51:17Speaker 3: then he's made I mean, Sean Payton didn't make any
- 51:20Speaker 3: bones about it, like he told everybody that's what he
- 51:22Speaker 3: was trying to do. Even though Drew was playing winning football.
- 51:25Speaker 3: I almost wonder if this is a similar situation where
- 51:27Speaker 3: I know, obviously the money is there and he's tied
- 51:29Speaker 3: up in this money, But I feel like, okay, Russ,
- 51:32Speaker 3: this brand of football is winning them games. If won
- 51:34Speaker 3: a bunch in a row, might punch their ticket to
- 51:36Speaker 3: the postseason. Who knows, but to win a championship with
- 51:38Speaker 3: Sean Payton has done, he knows, he needs, gonna need
- 51:41Speaker 3: better than what Russell can currently give them. Would it
- 51:44Speaker 3: surprise you at all if, like, there's a quarterback that
- 51:47Speaker 3: he really likes, if it's Jayden Daniels, whoever else it is,
- 51:50Speaker 3: that's in that, you know, not too far of a
- 51:52Speaker 3: leap to go get him. If even with Russ there,
- 51:55Speaker 3: if Sean Payton went and got the next guy to
- 51:57Speaker 3: have RHTT, that wouldn't surprise me at all.
- 52:00Speaker 1: But don't you go telling Alex Smith now that what
- 52:02Speaker 1: Russell Wilson's doing his mediocre quarterback play line of conversation.
- 52:08Speaker 3: He had some good points, he had some good points
- 52:10Speaker 3: on that. By the way, it was a bad division
- 52:12Speaker 3: that he was playing in.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Yeah, so no, I wouldn't be I wouldn't be surprised.
- 52:17Speaker 1: I mean, didn't the Saints also make a play for
- 52:19Speaker 1: Paxton Lynch when he was coming out in the first round.
- 52:21Speaker 3: Well, they talked about Lamar because I remember Man was
- 52:24Speaker 3: with us and and Mike was close with Sean Payton.
- 52:27Speaker 3: I'm not telling tales out of school here, but I
- 52:29Speaker 3: remember he was enamored by Lamar Jackson. So they was
- 52:32Speaker 3: thought that he would do that. I think they ended
- 52:33Speaker 3: up trading up and taking Davenport and we thought, we
- 52:35Speaker 3: said on the draft they.
- 52:37Speaker 2: Might be trading that for Lamar Jackson.
- 52:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeaheah, Well, and then we're taking quarterbacks for a while.
- 52:41Speaker 1: He took Garrett Grayson right in the third round, so
- 52:44Speaker 1: they were definitely looking right. I mean, so that makes
- 52:46Speaker 1: a lot of sense. Man. I don't know what the
- 52:51Speaker 1: Russell contract is and how that all works.
- 52:53Speaker 2: Oh it's a lot.
- 52:54Speaker 3: I think the out is after twenty five according to
- 52:56Speaker 3: spot track that was on there looking at that.
- 52:59Speaker 1: But again, you're again, you're paying minimal money to a
- 53:02Speaker 1: quarterback that you're going to draft, even if you do
- 53:04Speaker 1: draft them up there, you know, near the top. But
- 53:07Speaker 1: I don't know, can they are they I mean, look,
- 53:09Speaker 1: they wont what five in a row now, Yeah, they're
- 53:11Speaker 1: gonna have to move it's gonna take some maneuvering to
- 53:13Speaker 1: get up there for one of these dudes this year.
- 53:15Speaker 3: Well, that's what I'm saying. They haven't tried to get
- 53:17Speaker 3: up to one or two. I'm talking about ten to fourteen,
- 53:19Speaker 3: like someone.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Maybe the bo Nicks land or there's a bunch of
- 53:23Speaker 1: them and Daniels as you're talking about. Sure, yeah, I
- 53:27Speaker 1: could see one hundred percent. I can see it.
- 53:29Speaker 3: Yeah, that'll be interesting to keep an eye on there.
- 53:32Speaker 3: Anything else you want to add before we get out here.
- 53:33Speaker 3: This was a fun one today. A lot of ground
- 53:35Speaker 3: we covered here.
- 53:36Speaker 1: No doubt. I'm just looking at some of the other games.
- 53:39Speaker 1: I mean, Kyriene Williams is a player rams man. When
- 53:45Speaker 1: when they can operate, you know with you know the
- 53:48Speaker 1: way they want to with Kyraene, you know, rushing receipting
- 53:50Speaker 1: that that was big to watch that And I don't
- 53:54Speaker 1: know Patriots.
- 53:57Speaker 3: Got this week, so I got to jump in and
- 53:59Speaker 3: watch all that take this week. I prefer not to
- 54:01Speaker 3: talk about them until they do it after that. By
- 54:04Speaker 3: the way, as we're as we're closing up shop here,
- 54:08Speaker 3: our buddy Tom pelasera two minutes ago. Panthers have also
- 54:11Speaker 3: fired quarterback coach, Josh McCown, an assistant head coach, running
- 54:14Speaker 3: back coach Do Sdaly per sources. So it is not
- 54:18Speaker 3: just the head coach. It's a little unusual to see
- 54:20Speaker 3: that many assistants get get let go. But I would
- 54:23Speaker 3: also say I was talking to a coach about this
- 54:26Speaker 3: the other day. Much better if you're a coach to
- 54:30Speaker 3: get fired as the college carousel is getting ready to
- 54:33Speaker 3: kick off, then to wait till the NFL season ends,
- 54:37Speaker 3: because there is another whole pool of jobs and as
- 54:39Speaker 3: we know, these colleges can pay quite handsomely. So you
- 54:42Speaker 3: know that is not a bad idea to get let go.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Now that is interesting in terms of Douce Daley and
- 54:47Speaker 2: Josh McCown going. So now what appear to many cooks
- 54:50Speaker 2: in the kitchen? Too many cooks in the kitchen. And
- 54:52Speaker 2: then if you had like faction's like this is a survivor,
- 54:56Speaker 2: like I got this click versus that click, like how
- 54:58Speaker 2: is that working in the And so maybe you're trying
- 55:01Speaker 2: to give Thomas Brown an opportunity to be the play
- 55:04Speaker 2: caller without maybe noise in his ear in terms of
- 55:08Speaker 2: how this offense should look. And maybe that's what they're doing.
- 55:10Speaker 2: Remember They also elevated and asked Jim Callwell to take
- 55:13Speaker 2: on more responsibilities and helping Thomas Brown. Jim Callwell helped
- 55:18Speaker 2: the Baltimore Ravens as a play caller win the Super
- 55:20Speaker 2: Bowl with Joe Flacco, not saying that he'll have influence,
- 55:23Speaker 2: but I will say I had a conversation with Jim
- 55:25Speaker 2: Callwell before he joined the Panthers, like just a random
- 55:28Speaker 2: conversation about which quarterback he liked. Bryce Young was his
- 55:31Speaker 2: quarterbackup choice. And so maybe they're trying to get enough
- 55:35Speaker 2: people around Bryce to see Bryce and maybe the light
- 55:39Speaker 2: that the owner saw him to give him the best
- 55:41Speaker 2: opportunity to play at a high level going forward. Yeah,
- 55:45Speaker 2: I just think back and I don't know.
- 55:46Speaker 3: I mean, remember the Josh McCown the video at the
- 55:49Speaker 3: CJ Stroud DJ just bring it by.
- 55:53Speaker 2: That's this guy. That stuff has to come up, like
- 55:56Speaker 2: that stuff. Yeah, Like so was there some stuff when
- 55:59Speaker 2: you're losing where maybe it's not said, but you feel it.
- 56:04Speaker 2: You feel like I'm not really your guy the way
- 56:07Speaker 2: you're So maybe they're trying to get all of those
- 56:10Speaker 2: people out and say, hey, here's how we're going to
- 56:12Speaker 2: go forward.
- 56:13Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, there you go a little little bonus piece
- 56:16Speaker 3: of news there as we wrap this one up today.
- 56:18Speaker 3: We'll be back tomorrow, as we are each and every
- 56:20Speaker 3: day you can catch us here. We appreciate you hanging
- 56:22Speaker 3: with us, and we'll see you next time on movie sticks.
