- 0:53Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention?
- 0:58Speaker 2: This is a Patriots unfiltered emergency podcast.

- 1:12Speaker 4: All right, it is an emergency podcast. It's a Monday
- 1:16Speaker 4: here at Jillette Stadium, and we had our black Monday
- 1:20Speaker 4: on Sunday night.
- 1:21Speaker 5: We did.
- 1:22Speaker 4: As everyone who is watching listening already knows, Gerrod Mayo
- 1:27Speaker 4: was fired as head coach of the New England Patriots
- 1:31Speaker 4: last night, approximately an hour after the game. It was
- 1:35Speaker 4: a statement released by the Patriots, and we are here
- 1:39Speaker 4: today because we're going to talk about that, but also
- 1:42Speaker 4: we're going to lead you into a one pm live
- 1:45Speaker 4: press conference with the owner CEO of the team Robert Craft,
- 1:49Speaker 4: who will be addressing the media, and I assume he's
- 1:52Speaker 4: going to be taking questions. I don't want to say
- 1:55Speaker 4: that for a fact, but I just assume that if
- 1:57Speaker 4: he's going to be out there, he'll be fielding questions.
- 2:01Speaker 4: So we'll take that live during this show, and then
- 2:04Speaker 4: as soon as it wraps up, we'll go back to
- 2:06Speaker 4: you and we'll take reaction from.
- 2:08Speaker 5: That, and that I think will be the most interesting
- 2:11Speaker 5: part to see what Robert Craft has to say, and
- 2:14Speaker 5: you know, we'll react to all that. Still kind of
- 2:17Speaker 5: you know that there's a suddenness to it that's surprising.
- 2:20Speaker 5: I think it was sort of heading trending in that
- 2:23Speaker 5: direction that that mail was going to let go. But
- 2:25Speaker 5: still it's it's it's just the suddenness even now what
- 2:30Speaker 5: you know, eighteen hours later or whatever, it is just
- 2:35Speaker 5: kind of jarring. And you know, it was in the
- 2:36Speaker 5: middle of our show, our post game show last night,
- 2:40Speaker 5: and just to you know, to hear the finality of
- 2:44Speaker 5: it after one season, disappointing, but you know, not terribly surprising.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Just uh. I guess that the one surprising part is
- 2:52Speaker 5: that it happened Sunday and not yeah, Monday, which I
- 2:55Speaker 5: don't really get the difference. I know a lot of
- 2:56Speaker 5: people have been like, oh, no, it seems really cold. Yeah,
- 2:59Speaker 5: I don't you know, what are you gonna do?
- 3:01Speaker 4: Like, yeah, we've had some people say it's cold, other
- 3:03Speaker 4: people like the swiftness of it. You know, I think
- 3:07Speaker 4: people have different opinions on that. But you know, like
- 3:11Speaker 4: we we talked about it last night, it shouldn't come
- 3:15Speaker 4: as too much of a shock considering how things were going.
- 3:18Speaker 4: You know, we went in, We went into this wondering, Okay,
- 3:22Speaker 4: what does Gerard Mayo bring to the table, what is
- 3:24Speaker 4: this power? And really there was no answer to that
- 3:27Speaker 4: other than.
- 3:28Speaker 5: And what had gotten better, you know, at this of
- 3:30Speaker 5: the year.
- 3:30Speaker 4: And then as we got into December, what improved? And
- 3:36Speaker 4: there was no good answer to that either. And you
- 3:39Speaker 4: add those two things up and all the things that
- 3:41Speaker 4: happened in the middle, and there's a saying. I think
- 3:45Speaker 4: we've talked about it before. It's called fail fast. It
- 3:48Speaker 4: mostly in the tech world they use that, but I
- 3:51Speaker 4: think it applies here too. When you're pretty much certain
- 3:54Speaker 4: that you made the wrong decision, it's better to fail
- 3:57Speaker 4: fast and move on than to compound that decision.
- 4:00Speaker 5: I think that's a great point. I think your summation
- 4:03Speaker 5: is really really good too. Like what we went in
- 4:06Speaker 5: thinking and then we didn't really see, you know, in
- 4:09Speaker 5: other words, that superpower never nothing matterrested, and then nothing
- 4:13Speaker 5: really came out that it, you know, that improved along
- 4:16Speaker 5: the way. I would say that he in general, I
- 4:19Speaker 5: think he had the respect of his players. I think
- 4:22Speaker 5: that he did free up the locker room a little
- 4:24Speaker 5: bit because there was a little bit of a toxic
- 4:27Speaker 5: environment that had been created in the the the end
- 4:31Speaker 5: of the Belichick era, but almost too much so, and
- 4:34Speaker 5: there was maybe not enough of a control of that
- 4:38Speaker 5: atmosphere in the locker room. So it's unfortunate. We don't
- 4:42Speaker 5: like to see and I know people, you know, I
- 4:45Speaker 5: was joking around. There's some of the shows that are on.
- 4:47Speaker 5: I was like, I wonder if they're taking their victory laps,
- 4:49Speaker 5: because I think there's some sort of like perverse pleasure
- 4:52Speaker 5: sometimes people get when when well, yeah, I mean I'm
- 4:55Speaker 5: calling for I'm tough, I'm calling for his job, and
- 4:58Speaker 5: then he gets fired and they're like good, Like, I
- 5:01Speaker 5: don't really, I've never really thought of it that way,
- 5:03Speaker 5: even when I think a guy should lose a job.
- 5:06Speaker 5: I've never really taken a whole lot of joy in
- 5:09Speaker 5: other people's demise. But to each his own, I guess
- 5:13Speaker 5: I don't. I don't think it's a great day for
- 5:15Speaker 5: the organization or anything like that. But I like your
- 5:17Speaker 5: your fail fast mantra. I really like that because I
- 5:22Speaker 5: think there's too many times, Freddy where happens with quarterbacks,
- 5:26Speaker 5: and it happens with coaches when you kind of know
- 5:29Speaker 5: you don't have the guy, You're like, well, we're going
- 5:31Speaker 5: to play it out. You know. We just saw this
- 5:33Speaker 5: with Chicago with Matt Eberflus. You know, they kind of
- 5:37Speaker 5: finished strong last year, you know, with Justin Fields. They
- 5:41Speaker 5: end up letting Justin Fields go, they take Caleb Williams,
- 5:45Speaker 5: They stick it out with Ebraflus, and then halfway through
- 5:47Speaker 5: the year they got to make a change. So I
- 5:49Speaker 5: think he was failing, but maybe not fast enough for
- 5:52Speaker 5: them to make a move. And now Chicago's in the
- 5:54Speaker 5: same boat.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean that said. You know, there are some
- 5:56Speaker 4: teams that are too fast, you know, they don't give
- 5:59Speaker 4: someone a chance to develop. But I think there are
- 6:02Speaker 4: and I think this is a situation of those times
- 6:05Speaker 4: where it's it's pretty evident, and you know he wasn't ready.
- 6:08Speaker 4: And I said last night, I said, other than the
- 6:12Speaker 4: Mayo and his family, the person who should be most
- 6:15Speaker 4: sad about this whole thing is Robert Kraft because good
- 6:20Speaker 4: intentions aside. He was in a put in a bad
- 6:23Speaker 4: situation and have any support.
- 6:26Speaker 5: And Robert really, you know, he went on a limb.
- 6:29Speaker 5: He believed he had he had a vision, he had
- 6:31Speaker 5: a feeling, He talked about his gut feeling and all that.
- 6:33Speaker 5: I'm not wouldn't have to, you know, relitigate that, but
- 6:38Speaker 5: I agree with you. You know, it was on Robert.
- 6:40Speaker 5: So I do think he probably took it hard, you know.
- 6:43Speaker 5: And I think we said this last night. The easy
- 6:47Speaker 5: thing to do would have been that's one year, he'll
- 6:49Speaker 5: get better. We believe in this. We're gonna keep going.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Ye.
- 6:53Speaker 5: The hard thing to do is what they did. Yeah,
- 6:55Speaker 5: and to say I don't think it's going in the
- 6:57Speaker 5: right direction. We're going to make a move that's not
- 6:59Speaker 5: easy to do. I give them a lot of credit
- 7:01Speaker 5: for doing it.
- 7:01Speaker 4: So nothing it's official from the team, but there's a
- 7:05Speaker 4: lot of reports out there that they've already requested interviews
- 7:09Speaker 4: with Ben Johnson and I guess you can do that now.
- 7:12Speaker 5: Uh yeah, because because they won last day.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Won there, they've got to buy, so they're not playing
- 7:18Speaker 4: next week.
- 7:18Speaker 5: So that was Albert Breer, by the way, I saw
- 7:21Speaker 5: the only one I saw on.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Tony Pellisaro had it okay, So uh, they'll do that.
- 7:26Speaker 4: And I guess I already heard that they're going to
- 7:29Speaker 4: be interviewing Mike Vrabel. That's no surprise. So those are two,
- 7:34Speaker 4: you know, And of course they're going to have to
- 7:36Speaker 4: have more just for the Rooney rule alone, They're going
- 7:41Speaker 4: to have to have more. So those will be forthcoming
- 7:45Speaker 4: and we'll see how quickly they can move.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I mean I would expect there to be
- 7:50Speaker 5: some activity. And I thought you made really good points
- 7:53Speaker 5: last night, Fred about the process and wanting to be thorough.
- 7:58Speaker 5: I think you use the term you're looking for a
- 7:59Speaker 5: guy with gravitas. Yeah, but just you wanted a thorough
- 8:03Speaker 5: search because you don't know what You don't know sometimes
- 8:07Speaker 5: until you get it in your room or you know,
- 8:09Speaker 5: you have some kind of interview. I know they're not
- 8:10Speaker 5: all in person nowadays, there's a lot of zoom calls
- 8:14Speaker 5: and whatnot. But I would I would hope that they get,
- 8:18Speaker 5: you know, a good half dozen guys to sit down
- 8:21Speaker 5: and have you know, legitimate, you know, thorough interviews with
- 8:25Speaker 5: just if for nothing else for a fact finding mission.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Yeah, And I don't know, like how you do those interviews.
- 8:30Speaker 4: I've heard some teams where they fly the guy in
- 8:33Speaker 4: and they spend like two days with him. You know,
- 8:36Speaker 4: there's dinners, there's talks, there's touring, there's you know, it's
- 8:40Speaker 4: a really a get to know type of thing, especially
- 8:44Speaker 4: with a guy like Ben Johnson. I don't he has
- 8:46Speaker 4: no connections to this place, So like, how do you
- 8:50Speaker 4: how do you in an interview find out, Oh, this
- 8:52Speaker 4: is the guy? Like what are the questions that you ask?
- 8:55Speaker 4: And to me, I think they're less about x's and o's.
- 8:59Speaker 4: I assume he knows football. He's proven that.
- 9:01Speaker 5: It's structure.
- 9:02Speaker 4: It's structure. Who do you want to bring with you?
- 9:05Speaker 4: What kind of defense? You know? Like who will you
- 9:08Speaker 4: be your defensive coordinator? You know, what structure do you want?
- 9:15Speaker 4: Or are you comfortable with up to the ownership things
- 9:21Speaker 4: like that?
- 9:22Speaker 5: You know, Yeah, Like I think all that structure I
- 9:24Speaker 5: think is important because it's how you wanted to I mean,
- 9:29Speaker 5: are you comfortable being you know under a GM or
- 9:34Speaker 5: do you want I mean you only want it this
- 9:36Speaker 5: way where you like the Belichick madet you know you're
- 9:39Speaker 5: the final say or that that kind of structure. What's
- 9:43Speaker 5: your philosophies in terms of how you're going to handle
- 9:45Speaker 5: your players in discipline and and all that stuff that
- 9:48Speaker 5: goes with it. You know, the media, how you know
- 9:51Speaker 5: how you want to handle the media, how how you play,
- 9:54Speaker 5: how you want your players. There's a lot of different
- 9:56Speaker 5: things you used to say all the time, like the
- 9:58Speaker 5: head coaches, like the CEO of the open right, how
- 10:01Speaker 5: do you intend to be the CEO?
- 10:03Speaker 4: I want to know on the first day that you
- 10:05Speaker 4: have your team meeting, what are you going to tell them?
- 10:07Speaker 4: And I don't want to hear well, I haven't really
- 10:10Speaker 4: thought about that yet, because if you thought about being
- 10:12Speaker 4: a head coach, you should have thought about that. This
- 10:16Speaker 4: is the person I want to present as a leader.
- 10:19Speaker 4: And like I said, if you've thought about being a
- 10:23Speaker 4: head coach, you've thought about that first time that you
- 10:26Speaker 4: address your team. And I want to hear what what
- 10:29Speaker 4: you want to say?
- 10:30Speaker 5: What what you what would you say look like like
- 10:32Speaker 5: if you were a head coach? And I mean it's
- 10:34Speaker 5: a little early in the show, you know, like, what
- 10:37Speaker 5: what would you say like if you were Well, the.
- 10:40Speaker 4: First thing I do is, I'd introduce myself. Here's where
- 10:42Speaker 4: I've been, Here's what I've done, Please to introduce. Here's
- 10:46Speaker 4: why I think myself, Here's why I can be a
- 10:49Speaker 4: good head coach for you, and I would. I would
- 10:52Speaker 4: spell that out like that. And then once I'm done
- 10:55Speaker 4: with that, then I get into here's what I expect
- 10:59Speaker 4: from you, And I get into how I am going
- 11:03Speaker 4: to run this team, and you know, set level, set
- 11:08Speaker 4: the expectations for the team, what I'm what I look
- 11:12Speaker 4: for in a football player, what I look for in
- 11:15Speaker 4: a teammate, those types of things. I just lay it
- 11:19Speaker 4: out there as you know, as thoroughly as I can.
- 11:25Speaker 5: I'll tell you, I mean, you come up with a
- 11:26Speaker 5: good offensive and defensive coordinator, Freddie and you're in the mix, Well,
- 11:29Speaker 5: I like your meeting.
- 11:31Speaker 4: No, but somebody, somebody I was talking to somebody and
- 11:33Speaker 4: they said, you know, you know, coach needs to you know,
- 11:36Speaker 4: they need to tell me like how what's their process
- 11:39Speaker 4: for communication and what's the and sure, but at the
- 11:44Speaker 4: end of the day, somebody's going to handle that For me,
- 11:47Speaker 4: I want to find out what kind of leader is
- 11:49Speaker 4: this guy? Is he going to get people to run
- 11:52Speaker 4: through a wall for him? Is he somebody who when
- 11:54Speaker 4: he speaks, I believe what he's saying. It starts there
- 11:59Speaker 4: all the other office management stuff. We can figure that out.
- 12:02Speaker 4: I agree with you, But you got to have somebody
- 12:05Speaker 4: who takes control of the room.
- 12:07Speaker 5: And you find that out by talking, Like the interview
- 12:09Speaker 5: process is answering, Like that's not even a specific question,
- 12:13Speaker 5: like you're telling me how you're going to command the
- 12:15Speaker 5: room when you answer my.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Question exactly, you know, and you know you can say,
- 12:18Speaker 4: well you're looking for a Bill Parcell's Mike Vrabel type.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Well that's one way of doing it. But I also
- 12:24Speaker 4: think of Mike McDaniel. Way is another way. He wows
- 12:27Speaker 4: you with his intellect.
- 12:28Speaker 5: You know, you know his quirkiness too.
- 12:31Speaker 4: You know, he's his own guy. He's genuine. So there's
- 12:34Speaker 4: there's not just one way to command the room. But
- 12:38Speaker 4: you have to command the room. You have to be yourself,
- 12:41Speaker 4: and who that person is has to resonate with a
- 12:45Speaker 4: bunch of alpha males who yeah, they and I call
- 12:50Speaker 4: them alphas, but they also want to believe that if
- 12:53Speaker 4: I follow this guy, he's going to take me to
- 12:56Speaker 4: the right place. You know, he knows what he's talking
- 12:59Speaker 4: about and I can trust him.
- 13:01Speaker 5: I totally agree. And I like the way you talk
- 13:04Speaker 5: about the whole process, you know, because I do think
- 13:07Speaker 5: it's important that you would mentioned at the very beginning,
- 13:12Speaker 5: you know, I'm not gonna care about ex's and o's
- 13:15Speaker 5: because They'm going to assume all these guys do. And
- 13:17Speaker 5: I think the players know that too. Now they might
- 13:19Speaker 5: have systems and styles that they well, they don't know
- 13:22Speaker 5: how am I going to be used? Right, Yeah, that's
- 13:24Speaker 5: that's a little different, but commandingly, you know, the whole
- 13:29Speaker 5: thing with Steve Belichick. This reminds me of like when
- 13:32Speaker 5: Girard and Steve Belichick were under Bill, no one was
- 13:35Speaker 5: the defensive coordinator, and a lot of people have thought,
- 13:39Speaker 5: reported opined that the reason for that was Steve was
- 13:43Speaker 5: actually the defensive coordinator but couldn't really command the room
- 13:47Speaker 5: in meetings. Gerard had to be the one. Now we
- 13:50Speaker 5: know Gerard can. Yeah, we've all you know, we've all
- 13:52Speaker 5: seen it. You know, we know he can command her room.
- 13:55Speaker 5: So I do think it's important to have that element
- 13:59Speaker 5: of communication and have there be no two ways about it.
- 14:04Speaker 5: Like you know, you know what, when you see it,
- 14:07Speaker 5: you know the guy is commanding the room. You know,
- 14:09Speaker 5: the guy has the attention, the ear of the players.
- 14:11Speaker 5: And I think in a lot of those things Gerard
- 14:13Speaker 5: did a good job of. I do think he had
- 14:15Speaker 5: the players. Yeah, I just think that it wasn't enough.
- 14:19Speaker 4: It wasn't enough in the end. You know, you go
- 14:21Speaker 4: back to Bill and I've heard people say, you know,
- 14:23Speaker 4: build it everything. He thought of everything, but he didn't
- 14:27Speaker 4: do everything. You know, don't underestimate the help that he
- 14:30Speaker 4: got from guys like Ernie Adams, Dante and Bears Nigerian.
- 14:35Speaker 4: You know, when Bill came, he brought Bears with him,
- 14:38Speaker 4: and Bears was his commit you know, his chief of staff.
- 14:41Speaker 5: And to your point about when you're interviewing the guy, right,
- 14:44Speaker 5: who are you bringing with you, Mike, you these are
- 14:48Speaker 5: the two guys right, Label and Ben Johnson. Ben, you
- 14:51Speaker 5: know you've been an offensive coordinator, you've been a hot commodity.
- 14:54Speaker 5: Who do you planning on bringing with you? You know,
- 14:57Speaker 5: your staff, offensive defensive coordinator, But who's your chief who's
- 15:01Speaker 5: your chief of staff? Have you thought about that? Do
- 15:03Speaker 5: you think that's important, right, you know, and and whatnot.
- 15:07Speaker 5: I think that there's a lot of those pieces that
- 15:10Speaker 5: sort of fell through the cracks because Gerad's lack of experience.
- 15:15Speaker 4: Yep. So those that supports staff is vitally important to
- 15:20Speaker 4: these head coaches because there is so much to this
- 15:24Speaker 4: job aside from getting ready for Sunday and drafting players
- 15:28Speaker 4: and you know, building your squad. There's just so much
- 15:31Speaker 4: to the job. You cannot do it alone. You need
- 15:35Speaker 4: a good support staff. So I want to know what
- 15:38Speaker 4: have you thought about that? Do you have people in mind?
- 15:41Speaker 4: Where are they from, why do you like them? What
- 15:44Speaker 4: attributes do they have that are going to help you
- 15:47Speaker 4: be the best head coach you can be. It's so
- 15:50Speaker 4: this isn't a two hour interview in my mind, these
- 15:53Speaker 4: are This is at least at minimum a full day
- 15:57Speaker 4: that you spend with the person.
- 15:58Speaker 5: If not too it could be a two day.
- 16:00Speaker 4: It could could be a two days.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Like when you cut the fingernail a little bit.
- 16:07Speaker 7: The time.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Yeah, he came from the locker room.
- 16:10Speaker 8: It's back from the locker room.
- 16:12Speaker 9: What was the mood where the players friendly to that
- 16:15Speaker 9: none of them look like.
- 16:16Speaker 10: Devin Henry Ayke.
- 16:18Speaker 11: What was it like in the locker room.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Like, what was it like?
- 16:27Speaker 4: You know, so today was sponsored by HEFTI.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Yeah, it was.
- 16:31Speaker 7: I think we maybe need a minor key version of
- 16:32Speaker 7: that song because it was pretty morose in that locker
- 16:34Speaker 7: room today. I've done it a few times Blogger would
- 16:39Speaker 7: thank you. You know, heard from Dietrich Wise, who obviously
- 16:44Speaker 7: very affable person, and he it's tough. You can see
- 16:48Speaker 7: him and Gotscha both spoke and they both seemed really
- 16:52Speaker 7: just frustrated and kind of hurt and you know, t
- 16:54Speaker 7: trick Wise saying they didn't really have a chance to
- 16:56Speaker 7: say goodbye to jirob Mayo. They were you know, they
- 17:00Speaker 7: were kind of announced to the team this morning, but
- 17:01Speaker 7: yesterday when it happened that were Connie said they were
- 17:04Speaker 7: whispers in the locker room. So I think they were
- 17:06Speaker 7: a little frustrated by that. Uh, David Andrews a little
- 17:09Speaker 7: bit more level headed. I don't want to say level headed,
- 17:11Speaker 7: that's not the right word, just a little bit more.
- 17:14Speaker 7: I think he's been here, maybe small, I don't know,
- 17:16Speaker 7: he just he didn't seem quite as as as you know,
- 17:18Speaker 7: in a dark places those guys did. But uh, he
- 17:21Speaker 7: did hint that he'd like to come back, he thinks,
- 17:22Speaker 7: so he's gonna still see how it goes. But I
- 17:24Speaker 7: know that's a point we've been talking about. But yeah,
- 17:27Speaker 7: just not a good not a good vibe. You understand
- 17:29Speaker 7: why in the locker room. I mean, it's never been
- 17:30Speaker 7: a good vibe on this day. I remember twenty nineteen,
- 17:33Speaker 7: my first year here, they were just coming off a
- 17:35Speaker 7: somewhat surprising playoff loss, and you know, similar kind of vibe.
- 17:39Speaker 7: But I don't know, it just have been such a bad,
- 17:40Speaker 7: you know, tough season. We've heard these guys over and
- 17:43Speaker 7: they you know, they've stayed positive, I think in some regards,
- 17:46Speaker 7: but this time it feels like season's over, our coaches fired.
- 17:50Speaker 7: Just it's it's tough.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Well it's been you know, twenty four twenty five years
- 17:57Speaker 4: since we got rid of a coach while the players
- 18:00Speaker 4: were still here. Yeah, because Belichick. The parting of ways
- 18:04Speaker 4: was after the team had left, you know, And so
- 18:08Speaker 4: we haven't experienced this in a while. And I'm just wondering, like,
- 18:11Speaker 4: did you said like they were a little bit upset
- 18:16Speaker 4: or disappointed that they didn't get a chance to talk
- 18:19Speaker 4: to Gerard or at least say goodbye to him. Do
- 18:24Speaker 4: you think of, you know, was it just disappointment? Were
- 18:27Speaker 4: they upset about that?
- 18:29Speaker 7: I think they were a little upset, to be honest.
- 18:31Speaker 7: I mean, especially teacher wise. You know, both he and
- 18:33Speaker 7: and Godshaw and Andrews were the three scrums. I could
- 18:36Speaker 7: kind of hear Christian Zalez talk that I was little
- 18:38Speaker 7: bit on the outskirts. I couldn't hear anything he.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Was saying, you know, when you're next, I know.
- 18:43Speaker 7: But yeah, it was just uh, guys wearing their their
- 18:46Speaker 7: emotions on their sleeve today. And I think it's just
- 18:48Speaker 7: been such a long season. I think you just see
- 18:50Speaker 7: that kind of emotional letdown of oh this is really hard,
- 18:54Speaker 7: and you know, I mean think we all go through
- 18:55Speaker 7: it when you have, you know, a tough string of
- 18:57Speaker 7: work or whatever. It is like, you know, there's just
- 18:58Speaker 7: that letdown period, and it's it seemed like they were,
- 19:01Speaker 7: you know, firmly in it.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Little.
- 19:02Speaker 7: I mean this packed. I mean there's tons of media
- 19:05Speaker 7: in there. The cameras are back in there. They haven't
- 19:06Speaker 7: been in there all seasons, so it's you know, really
- 19:08Speaker 7: hard to move around. Players are trying to move through
- 19:10Speaker 7: the locker room with big bags of stuff. Some players
- 19:14Speaker 7: not talking, some players are you know, some players getting
- 19:16Speaker 7: frustrated with all the people in the way. Uh, just
- 19:19Speaker 7: you know, it wasn't what wasn't a great vibe. I mean,
- 19:21Speaker 7: I don't expect crew, but big crew, big, you know.
- 19:24Speaker 4: I I don't want to like go down too much
- 19:27Speaker 4: a rabbit of a rabbit hole. But let's just say,
- 19:30Speaker 4: for example, Vrabel is the next head coach. I think
- 19:34Speaker 4: one of the challenges he's going to have on day
- 19:36Speaker 4: one once the team gets back is who is pissed
- 19:40Speaker 4: and who isn't you know? And am I looked at
- 19:43Speaker 4: as a guy who was kind of in cahoots and
- 19:49Speaker 4: you know, had the job before Gerard even left. Like
- 19:52Speaker 4: even if that's not true, how many players believe that?
- 19:55Speaker 12: Yeah?
- 19:56Speaker 4: So what am I walking into on day one?
- 19:58Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 19:59Speaker 4: I mean and from a perception standpoint, and.
- 20:01Speaker 7: Some of you know, what I heard too is just
- 20:03Speaker 7: you know, it was his first year. A lot of
- 20:05Speaker 7: that kind of talk from the players of that. So,
- 20:07Speaker 7: you know, I think a lot of these players they
- 20:09Speaker 7: said they still had jiads back, and I think they
- 20:10Speaker 7: still did have giads back. And I think now you're
- 20:13Speaker 7: seeing how it happened, so suddenly for them, I think
- 20:16Speaker 7: they were a little bit taken him back too, and
- 20:18Speaker 7: oh it's so funny.
- 20:19Speaker 4: You know, when these things are going on in the
- 20:22Speaker 4: middle of it, you know, Oh, yeah, we've been hearing
- 20:24Speaker 4: from the people get rid of Gerrod mail, you know,
- 20:27Speaker 4: the people that were okay with him. You didn't hear
- 20:29Speaker 4: so much from now that he's gone. You hear Obviously,
- 20:33Speaker 4: we hear a lot of people it had to be done,
- 20:35Speaker 4: This was the right thing. But now we're also starting
- 20:38Speaker 4: to hear from the people who don't think it was fair.
- 20:41Speaker 4: You know that Gronk was on Fox. He was saying
- 20:44Speaker 4: it wasn't fair. Tony wasn't Tony dunge you? But uh,
- 20:51Speaker 4: play play to win the game. Herm Edwards uh said
- 20:55Speaker 4: he was a little bit surprised and thought it was
- 20:58Speaker 4: a little bit you know. So you're starting to hear
- 21:00Speaker 4: from people now, who, hey, it was a rookie head coach.
- 21:02Speaker 4: What did you expect?
- 21:03Speaker 5: Yeah, And I get that. And I think with Mike
- 21:06Speaker 5: talking about the players sort of being a little bit
- 21:08Speaker 5: angry and disappointed didn't get a chance to say like
- 21:11Speaker 5: kind of speaks to the point that we were talking about,
- 21:13Speaker 5: Like I do think Gerard had the year of the
- 21:15Speaker 5: locker room. I think he had. I think he commanded
- 21:17Speaker 5: the room as the way Fred said it might. You
- 21:19Speaker 5: need a guy that can get in there and immediately
- 21:22Speaker 5: get the players attention. I think he had that. I
- 21:25Speaker 5: think it was a lot of the other stuff that
- 21:27Speaker 5: he lacked experience in that that ultimately brought him down.
- 21:31Speaker 5: But I understand why people, especially from Afar, like if
- 21:34Speaker 5: you're here every day and you're hearing every like if
- 21:38Speaker 5: you're a national guy and you look and say, hey, Fred,
- 21:44Speaker 5: you know I heard this like some stuff going on
- 21:46Speaker 5: in New England that you know, what was that thing about?
- 21:50Speaker 5: You know the fan? You know the fans. Oh, well,
- 21:53Speaker 5: like Johnny Tevai admit mentioned that the fans weren't qualified
- 21:56Speaker 5: to critique. If you're like a national guy, you'd be like,
- 22:00Speaker 5: that's it right, Well, you know, no, you don't really understand.
- 22:04Speaker 5: It's like in a season's worth of you know, sort
- 22:07Speaker 5: of missteps and that just was the latest one, you
- 22:09Speaker 5: know what I mean, Like, yeah, it's not these these
- 22:12Speaker 5: all these little things aren't the reason why was gone. Yeah,
- 22:16Speaker 5: I think if you look at the totality, and certainly
- 22:19Speaker 5: he's not gone because they went four and thirteen. Now
- 22:21Speaker 5: because I don't think that's a terribly surprising result for
- 22:24Speaker 5: the season. I just think there was a lot of
- 22:26Speaker 5: factors that came in, both on and off the field,
- 22:29Speaker 5: And to your point that you started with the lack
- 22:33Speaker 5: of progress, the lack of hope and improvement, you know,
- 22:36Speaker 5: as you went on, is probably why we are now.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Apparently Wolfe had an interview with somebody, He talked to
- 22:43Speaker 4: somebody on record.
- 22:45Speaker 6: And.
- 22:47Speaker 4: One of the quotes that stood out to me was,
- 22:50Speaker 4: you know, it was the mia Kolpa, we have to
- 22:53Speaker 4: do better. We didn't do enough. But he also said
- 22:56Speaker 4: we expected more internal development when it came from the players.
- 23:01Speaker 4: So to me, that's an indictment on the coaches right.
- 23:03Speaker 7: Specifically the lide receivers, specifically the lide receivers. I think
- 23:06Speaker 7: Jalen Polki mentioned he thought plug and play kind of player,
- 23:09Speaker 7: and I think that's what we kind of saw this summer.
- 23:11Speaker 7: So that's that's one area where we spend so much
- 23:14Speaker 7: time trying to is it the player? Did they draft
- 23:16Speaker 7: the wrong player, did they not develop the player? You know,
- 23:19Speaker 7: at least as far as this interview was concerned, they
- 23:21Speaker 7: were pointing more towards the development.
- 23:22Speaker 5: But I made that comment last week. You know, it's great,
- 23:25Speaker 5: and I think the philosophy is very sound, like to say,
- 23:28Speaker 5: we want to be a draft and developing team, but
- 23:31Speaker 5: you need to do both of those parts. And I
- 23:33Speaker 5: just I find it impossible to believe that all of
- 23:36Speaker 5: these failed draft picks at the Patriots had, let's just say,
- 23:39Speaker 5: over the last five years, none of them could play.
- 23:42Speaker 5: I find that impossible to believe that they just whiffed
- 23:45Speaker 5: so much on these draft picks that none of them
- 23:48Speaker 5: could play. I think that at least, you know, some
- 23:50Speaker 5: of these guys were let down by the lack of development.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Now it's on the players too, like they have to
- 23:56Speaker 5: develop on their own, but I think that they not
- 23:59Speaker 5: all of these guys were put in the position.
- 24:01Speaker 4: It's find it equally hard to believe that any one
- 24:03Speaker 4: team just gets lucky every year. No, there's probably.
- 24:07Speaker 5: More to it, right, There's more to the Steelers year
- 24:10Speaker 5: after year after year finding gems for wide receivers in
- 24:13Speaker 5: the fourth and sixth round. There's more to that than
- 24:16Speaker 5: just the players that they're picking.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Right.
- 24:18Speaker 7: I think I've seen too from these last couple of
- 24:20Speaker 7: seasons is how things snowball. And I mean I've seen
- 24:22Speaker 7: it snowball in the bad direction. Certainly the year I'm
- 24:26Speaker 7: sure you guys could probably speak more towards snowballing in
- 24:28Speaker 7: a good way. Like, you know, it was things started
- 24:30Speaker 7: going good and then you just start getting the breaks.
- 24:32Speaker 7: And this was a team and a season across the
- 24:34Speaker 7: board they just couldn't seem to get the breaks and
- 24:36Speaker 7: everything that seemed to go wrong went wrong, including you know,
- 24:39Speaker 7: kind of winning the last game of the season when.
- 24:41Speaker 4: But when you're a bad team, you don't get the breaks.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, yeah, but he's right, like, because I
- 24:45Speaker 5: think this, We've sat here a million times and be
- 24:48Speaker 5: like geez, you know, like remember when we you know,
- 24:51Speaker 5: let's just go to the one of the most famous ones,
- 24:53Speaker 5: you know, like we're onto Cincinnati. Like it's hard to
- 24:57Speaker 5: think back and just think the amount of sort of
- 25:00Speaker 5: angst in despair or you had after getting buried in
- 25:04Speaker 5: Kansas City and the Monday night it was over, I
- 25:06Speaker 5: mean like two and two was the window closed. Yeah,
- 25:08Speaker 5: you know, if Freddy Kursh window closed, got to get Garoppolo.
- 25:11Speaker 5: But you know, and it's easy to sit back and say,
- 25:14Speaker 5: well that was silly, Yeah, because all of a sudden
- 25:17Speaker 5: you win one game and Gronk is like half in
- 25:20Speaker 5: tears talking about Brady. I wanted to I wanted to
- 25:22Speaker 5: make sure a twelve look like twelve again. And it's snowballs,
- 25:26Speaker 5: to use Mike's word, and all of a sudden, you're
- 25:29Speaker 5: just roll through the season and you'll win another super
- 25:31Speaker 5: Bowl and it's just a mere footnote. Unfortunately, it's happened
- 25:35Speaker 5: the other way. Yeah, it has in the last couple
- 25:38Speaker 5: of years.
- 25:38Speaker 7: And I think that's, you know, getting back to your
- 25:40Speaker 7: earlier point. When a new coach comes in here, how
- 25:43Speaker 7: do you identify the right guys? How do you re
- 25:45Speaker 7: establish a winning culture? Because I think especially Tetrich Wise,
- 25:48Speaker 7: Jonathan Jones, We've mentioned their contracts are up, but you know,
- 25:51Speaker 7: these things, even this the losing culture kind of snowballs.
- 25:54Speaker 7: And now the majority of the guys that are leaders
- 25:55Speaker 7: on this team, they don't know what it's like.
- 25:58Speaker 5: And a lot of these guys are going to be back.
- 26:00Speaker 4: Yeah, so back to the locker room.
- 26:04Speaker 7: A lot of media, tons of media, tons of media
- 26:07Speaker 7: cameras everywhere, so.
- 26:08Speaker 4: They allow cameras in the actual locker room.
- 26:10Speaker 7: Today, cameras are back in in the actual locker room
- 26:12Speaker 7: and it's just uh, I mean, to be honest, it
- 26:14Speaker 7: kind of added to the stress of the day because
- 26:16Speaker 7: you got a lot of players, a lot of bags,
- 26:18Speaker 7: a lot of team staff pushing you know, carts through
- 26:21Speaker 7: loading things. I mean, it's just it's a lot of
- 26:24Speaker 7: track hole and a little cold. That's definitely cold out
- 26:26Speaker 7: in the hallway. Uh. But you see what a complex
- 26:29Speaker 7: day this is just not just for like, hey, we
- 26:31Speaker 7: got to say goodbye to the players. It's like they're
- 26:33Speaker 7: packing stuff up, they're getting ready to you know, to go,
- 26:35Speaker 7: and I just I feel, I really feel for a
- 26:38Speaker 7: lot of the lower level staffer kind of guys that
- 26:40Speaker 7: we get to know that we see, you know, behind
- 26:42Speaker 7: the scenes that you know nobody sees, but just they're
- 26:45Speaker 7: on uncertainty right now. I don't know what their future holds.
- 26:48Speaker 4: And that any coaches walking through or anything.
- 26:50Speaker 3: I did sow.
- 26:51Speaker 7: Brian Belichick came through, shook some hands, said hello to Evan,
- 26:54Speaker 7: so he was he was present, and I don't think
- 26:58Speaker 7: I I have a fierce I know he's not a
- 27:00Speaker 7: coach anymore, but he was in there. But no, otherwise
- 27:03Speaker 7: I didn't I didn't I didn't clock any of.
- 27:05Speaker 4: The other coaches I mean, you bring up Brian, that's
- 27:07Speaker 4: gonna be an interesting one.
- 27:08Speaker 7: I know.
- 27:08Speaker 4: You know what, what what does he do do? Is
- 27:10Speaker 4: you go to North Carolina, which I would assume I
- 27:12Speaker 4: wouldn't go, Like if I was him, Man, chart your
- 27:16Speaker 4: own course. Yeah, you know, stay in the NFL. Somebody
- 27:19Speaker 4: will hire you. I think I don't know. The safety's
- 27:24Speaker 4: kind of fell apart at the him there, But like
- 27:26Speaker 4: for the most part over the last couple of years,
- 27:28Speaker 4: I think he's done a pretty good job back.
- 27:30Speaker 5: I think he stayed here in New England because this
- 27:34Speaker 5: is where his home is, and I know that he's
- 27:36Speaker 5: got a young family, and I think it made all
- 27:39Speaker 5: the sense in the world. But if he's not going
- 27:40Speaker 5: to be back with the Patriots now, if he has
- 27:42Speaker 5: an opportunity to be back with the Patriots, I would
- 27:44Speaker 5: agree with you.
- 27:45Speaker 4: Yeah, but that's going to be up to the new coach.
- 27:47Speaker 5: Right, there's no guarantees there. My guess is he'll go
- 27:51Speaker 5: back with North Carolina like Steve did. And I wouldn't
- 27:54Speaker 5: be surprised if Mike Pellegrino went with him.
- 27:56Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, maybe Covington.
- 27:58Speaker 4: And how about you know you mentioned support staff. There
- 28:00Speaker 4: could be support staff scouts, other people that.
- 28:05Speaker 5: A lot of you know, personnel guys, nutrition staff, training staff.
- 28:10Speaker 5: There's a lot of different tentacles of the organization that
- 28:14Speaker 5: was still here when Bill was here. I wouldn't be
- 28:16Speaker 5: surprised if they had some.
- 28:18Speaker 7: You know, amazing to see, I mean down the road
- 28:21Speaker 7: when everything's hired. Is like just a chart of like
- 28:24Speaker 7: here's what the staff looks like in twenty twenty three,
- 28:27Speaker 7: Here's what the staff looked like in twenty twenty four,
- 28:28Speaker 7: Here's what it looked like in twenty twenty five. Just
- 28:30Speaker 7: for size, you know, experience of the different you know
- 28:34Speaker 7: with the scouting. Did the scouting staff kind of stay
- 28:37Speaker 7: the same? Does it change now? Like how big of
- 28:39Speaker 7: a wholesale change are we talking about this year? Are
- 28:42Speaker 7: there going to be a lot of holdovers? Are there not?
- 28:44Speaker 4: Well? You know, and who was it might have been Breer,
- 28:47Speaker 4: But a lot of people have used the word antiquated
- 28:51Speaker 4: with how the patriots are running things? Where are the
- 28:55Speaker 4: people you know, because in the past build it a lot.
- 28:58Speaker 4: But like we talked about it before you got here,
- 29:00Speaker 4: he had help, he had bears, and he had Ernie
- 29:03Speaker 4: and other people supporting him. But certainly it wasn't the
- 29:06Speaker 4: big staff that a lot of these other teams have.
- 29:09Speaker 4: I noticed that this year when Jiraid came in, there
- 29:13Speaker 4: were some let's say upgrades and just for example travel,
- 29:20Speaker 4: you know, they instituted an app that I know a
- 29:23Speaker 4: lot of other teams use. The person who who brought
- 29:25Speaker 4: it to us came from the cults. It's what they
- 29:27Speaker 4: and it organized the whole travel process for the players.
- 29:31Speaker 4: So in one app, it told him here's your room,
- 29:34Speaker 4: here's your here's the flight, here's your seat, here's the
- 29:37Speaker 4: meeting times at the hotel. Everything was in the app,
- 29:41Speaker 4: you know, and we I even had access to it
- 29:44Speaker 4: because did you get that to Yeah, it was called TeamWorks.
- 29:47Speaker 4: It's something that a lot of teams use, and you know,
- 29:53Speaker 4: twenty twenty four is the first time that this was used,
- 29:56Speaker 4: but other teams have been using that for a few
- 29:59Speaker 4: years now. But it's just one small example of there
- 30:02Speaker 4: were a lot of things that we just kind of
- 30:05Speaker 4: did because we'd already always been doing it that way
- 30:08Speaker 4: that could could use an upgrade of refreshing, you know.
- 30:11Speaker 5: Helped me out because I know you were involved in this,
- 30:13Speaker 5: but didn't we When Matt Patricia came back to the organization.
- 30:18Speaker 5: You know, after leaving Detroit, didn't he, with your help,
- 30:22Speaker 5: sort of institute some sort of program that helped with scouting.
- 30:27Speaker 4: Yeah, a long time ago.
- 30:29Speaker 5: It wasn't that long. It was like four or five
- 30:31Speaker 5: years now. It was longer than that when Patricia originally
- 30:33Speaker 5: came back from de No.
- 30:35Speaker 4: But we started that before he came.
- 30:38Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, maybe I'm thinking of something different then.
- 30:40Speaker 6: No.
- 30:40Speaker 4: I mean, you know, I'm not talking out of school here,
- 30:44Speaker 4: but no, I think our scouting database and you know
- 30:50Speaker 4: system was really antiquated, and so I was asked to
- 30:54Speaker 4: sit in on some meetings to bring in some of
- 30:57Speaker 4: the developers that I had worked with in the past
- 31:00Speaker 4: to bring this up to date. You know. Uh.
- 31:03Speaker 5: So there was so blame that to blame the drafting
- 31:06Speaker 5: on friends.
- 31:09Speaker 4: So there was a series of meetings where I kind
- 31:11Speaker 4: of laison these this you know, software development company. Uh,
- 31:17Speaker 4: and the Scouts were involved. Belichick was in in one
- 31:19Speaker 4: of the meetings and went to about three or four
- 31:21Speaker 4: before Bill so yc here and I got kicked out.
- 31:24Speaker 4: But they continued with it, and they they did develop
- 31:27Speaker 4: that system. I don't know, but that was it was
- 31:29Speaker 4: more than four or five years ago, so I don't
- 31:31Speaker 4: know what they're using today.
- 31:33Speaker 7: Yeah, it seems like they've made some steps, you know,
- 31:35Speaker 7: including the new facility that's going to come in. But
- 31:38Speaker 7: I guess the hope would be that the new coach
- 31:40Speaker 7: is going to come in who has been in other
- 31:42Speaker 7: NFL organizations and will further push that along and bring
- 31:46Speaker 7: you know, look, this is how we need to structure
- 31:47Speaker 7: our scouting department now. And you know where I was
- 31:50Speaker 7: in place, b This is you know, how we managed things.
- 31:53Speaker 5: With things from the different places that you were that
- 31:55Speaker 5: you thought worked and some of the things that this
- 31:57Speaker 5: is my whole point of conduct a thorough search, Yeah,
- 32:01Speaker 5: because you never know what ideas might be something. Hey,
- 32:04Speaker 5: I never thought of doing it.
- 32:05Speaker 7: That way gather information, which was a huge disadvantage for
- 32:08Speaker 7: Girod because you know he kind of saw how Bill
- 32:11Speaker 7: did it, and you know, maybe in hindsight he could
- 32:13Speaker 7: have said, geez, I could have used more.
- 32:15Speaker 4: Help at optimal. We kind of like like all he
- 32:20Speaker 4: knew was here, yeah right now, and that's say it
- 32:22Speaker 4: was like a sheltered child.
- 32:23Speaker 6: And.
- 32:25Speaker 7: I mean we said it it was. It was a
- 32:27Speaker 7: really tough task for him this year. I mean, I
- 32:28Speaker 7: don't want to downplay that. You know, he was given
- 32:31Speaker 7: an opportunity and didn't make the most of it. But
- 32:33Speaker 7: at the same time, I don't I don't know how
- 32:35Speaker 7: you can't look at him be like it's it was
- 32:36Speaker 7: a really tough for him to try to read that meeting.
- 32:38Speaker 4: I feel real bad for him, I really do so,
- 32:42Speaker 4: but it is what it is. It had to be done.
- 32:44Speaker 7: Yeah, that had to be the NFL.
- 32:47Speaker 4: But you know, if it's somebody like a Vrabel, he
- 32:50Speaker 4: was here obviously as a player Ohio State, so we
- 32:53Speaker 4: saw how a college game worked a little bit. He
- 32:57Speaker 4: was then he went.
- 32:58Speaker 5: Over to Houston Houston as.
- 33:00Speaker 7: The d C.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Then he went to the Titans, and then this year
- 33:04Speaker 4: he spent as a consultant with you know, the with Cleveland,
- 33:08Speaker 4: and I guess it's reported that he focused on offense,
- 33:12Speaker 4: like trying to learn, and.
- 33:14Speaker 5: I think he spent like training camp with the offensive
- 33:16Speaker 5: line and the season with tight ends or maybe the
- 33:18Speaker 5: other way around. Yeah, but yeah, he's trying. I that
- 33:22Speaker 5: to me was the thing that impressed me the most
- 33:23Speaker 5: about what his season was was sort of recognizing I'm
- 33:27Speaker 5: considered to be a defensive coach and some people looking
- 33:30Speaker 5: for more than that, So I need to learn what
- 33:33Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 33:35Speaker 4: He's a smart guy.
- 33:36Speaker 5: So like with Ben Johnson, who's the other guy that
- 33:39Speaker 5: they have that there's been tweets about the Patriots requesting
- 33:44Speaker 5: he's been basically on the offensive side. So what does
- 33:48Speaker 5: he have in mind to help him with defense? Is
- 33:52Speaker 5: he going to do like the Sean McVay, Kevin O'Connell
- 33:57Speaker 5: kind of thing. And I'm going to be head coach,
- 34:00Speaker 5: but I'm going to run the offense and I'm going
- 34:01Speaker 5: to hire and experienced Lou Lou and Romo is.
- 34:05Speaker 4: Speaking speaking of Lions. What a gag job by the
- 34:09Speaker 4: Vikings last night. So I was shocked that they didn't
- 34:12Speaker 4: put up the red zone so many times and couldn't
- 34:16Speaker 4: do anything.
- 34:17Speaker 5: And you know what, I thought, Detroit played really really
- 34:19Speaker 5: well defensively, But that wasn't about Detroit's defense in the
- 34:22Speaker 5: red zone. Like Donald just didn't play did not He
- 34:25Speaker 5: missed a wide open Jefferson like back to back plays,
- 34:30Speaker 5: you know, on one of those trips, and I thought
- 34:32Speaker 5: like the first time they get down there, like the
- 34:35Speaker 5: idea to go for the fourth down, I didn't think
- 34:37Speaker 5: made anything. They could have had the lead as badly
- 34:38Speaker 5: as they were playing, if they just kicked field gals.
- 34:40Speaker 4: No, you know, I don't want to get all they
- 34:44Speaker 4: talk about kind of a disappointing game. I just want
- 34:46Speaker 4: to disappointment.
- 34:47Speaker 5: But I give Detroit a lot of credit because I
- 34:49Speaker 5: didn't think they could win a game like that, you know,
- 34:51Speaker 5: with their defense playing so well. I thought there was
- 34:54Speaker 5: only one way that Detroit can win now, and that's
- 34:56Speaker 5: like in a shootout, and they won with Aaron Glenn.
- 34:59Speaker 5: Give him a lot of proper.
- 35:00Speaker 4: But everybody said, you gotta sign Sam Dalton.
- 35:03Speaker 5: Oh I still think that. I mean, he played that.
- 35:05Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 35:05Speaker 4: I think I think it's an open competition with him
- 35:08Speaker 4: and McCarthy.
- 35:08Speaker 5: Now, oh no, no, no, I'm not saying that Vikings
- 35:11Speaker 5: have to sign Sam Donald. But someone's got to sign Sam.
- 35:14Speaker 5: He's just starting quarterback. Like I'm not Ben Vollen. I
- 35:17Speaker 5: don't decide that the guy turned into a pumpkin because
- 35:19Speaker 5: he had one bad game. I don't ignore the other.
- 35:21Speaker 4: Six people will say that.
- 35:22Speaker 7: I know they were.
- 35:24Speaker 5: He was bad last He was a big part of
- 35:26Speaker 5: the reason why they lost last night.
- 35:27Speaker 4: He did not a missing Jefferson in that end zone back.
- 35:30Speaker 5: To back play he missed him to play before that too,
- 35:33Speaker 5: under the cross under the goal post. He threw it
- 35:35Speaker 5: over his head.
- 35:35Speaker 4: I know, I know that was too high. But at
- 35:38Speaker 4: least that one he had guys in front. The other
- 35:41Speaker 4: one was just just.
- 35:42Speaker 5: The other one lobbed in the other one was pitching catchy.
- 35:44Speaker 4: I don't know how he missed that anyway, Sorry to
- 35:46Speaker 4: you know, but that was well, this is.
- 35:48Speaker 5: What we do. I know we're talking about Ben Johnson.
- 35:50Speaker 4: Yeah, so we are awaiting a one o'clock press conference
- 35:54Speaker 4: with Robert Craft where he's going to address the situation
- 35:57Speaker 4: and we think take questions from the media. We'll cover
- 36:01Speaker 4: that live on this show, so you don't have to
- 36:04Speaker 4: leave this show. One that codes live. So that's one o'clock,
- 36:07Speaker 4: one oh five, whenever it is, we'll go to that live, right,
- 36:10Speaker 4: Matt Morrell, you're all set, you're ready to go. Okay,
- 36:13Speaker 4: I'm sure he's going to have like an opening statement
- 36:15Speaker 4: and then he'll probably take questions.
- 36:17Speaker 5: No, Robert Craft, not Matt Morill. Matt Morrell. Matt Morrell.
- 36:22Speaker 4: So all right, so let's uh, let's get to some
- 36:24Speaker 4: of your calls and emails while we're waiting. We'll start
- 36:27Speaker 4: with the TPX hotline and if I can get this
- 36:30Speaker 4: mouse going, We'll start with Chris with a T, I
- 36:34Speaker 4: A N.
- 36:35Speaker 11: What's up Christian, Hey, guys, I'll be pretty quick. I
- 36:41Speaker 11: you know, obviously I'm happy with the decision, not not happy.
- 36:45Speaker 11: You know that that Mayo got dismissed, and really it
- 36:48Speaker 11: never really got a chance, you know, personally for him
- 36:50Speaker 11: and the staff to just to have a shot have
- 36:54Speaker 11: a second year at it. I know he had a
- 36:58Speaker 11: bad year in terms of media and the team didn't
- 37:01Speaker 11: get any better than players that developed, and he was
- 37:03Speaker 11: putting a tough spot. At the end of the day, though,
- 37:07Speaker 11: the Crafts are here to win, and I really like
- 37:09Speaker 11: the statement about getting back and expedit, you know, the
- 37:14Speaker 11: process and getting back to a championship level. What I'm
- 37:18Speaker 11: really disappointed in is that they won yesterday and not
- 37:22Speaker 11: necessarily that they lose the the first pick in this
- 37:26Speaker 11: year's draft, which they tube. But for me, what it
- 37:29Speaker 11: does is that it hampers them from getting good players quicker.
- 37:34Speaker 13: The higher you.
- 37:35Speaker 11: Draft, obviously, and they are the better players you get.
- 37:37Speaker 11: And it's not just about this year's draft in terms
- 37:40Speaker 11: of we need a couple of guys and we'll be okay,
- 37:42Speaker 11: it's going to take two to three years to do it.
- 37:44Speaker 11: So you lost the ammal that you could potentially have
- 37:48Speaker 11: to move around and trade and get players maybe in
- 37:51Speaker 11: next year's draft, or get guys this year that maybe
- 37:54Speaker 11: you trade for T Higgins and you can use that
- 37:56Speaker 11: high draft pick in the second round or the third round.
- 38:00Speaker 11: Hopefully they can still do that and maneuver a little bit.
- 38:03Speaker 11: So but that's where I find it really disappointing. I
- 38:06Speaker 11: just think going from one to four, it's just going
- 38:09Speaker 11: to take that much longer to get people in the
- 38:11Speaker 11: building that can really help the team.
- 38:13Speaker 14: And that's all I got.
- 38:15Speaker 11: I'm sure you've got a lot of people on the line.
- 38:16Speaker 11: And thanks yesterday for going extra long on the The.
- 38:19Speaker 5: Post game was a question.
- 38:25Speaker 4: Ros Christians in New York? What's up, Sobert, Hey, how
- 38:32Speaker 4: you guys doing.
- 38:33Speaker 12: You know, it's a sad day, Like I didn't know.
- 38:37Speaker 12: I believe Mayo had to go just like how like
- 38:40Speaker 12: the season just progressed like throughout the rest of the years,
- 38:43Speaker 12: I mean the rest of the season. My thing is,
- 38:47Speaker 12: I don't like how to stand like celebrating it. I understand, like,
- 38:50Speaker 12: you know, we won yesterday and then you know Rob
- 38:53Speaker 12: people didn't like that. I think enjoyed watching the watching
- 38:56Speaker 12: the game because all I wanted to see is this
- 38:58Speaker 12: this team to be competitive, even know they're good backups.
- 39:01Speaker 12: But my questions for you guys like to see, how
- 39:04Speaker 12: should of belief Mayo got do you believe like the
- 39:08Speaker 12: next coach will act? Those same questions like how long
- 39:12Speaker 12: when the next coach has before we're saying, hey, this
- 39:14Speaker 12: is not working and we decided to can this guy
- 39:18Speaker 12: and over the next guy. And last thing, I believe
- 39:20Speaker 12: Elliott Well is the full blame for all this emman craft.
- 39:25Speaker 12: I believe Wolf should go.
- 39:26Speaker 4: Okay, it's a fair question about like are they going
- 39:30Speaker 4: to be too quick with the next person? And I
- 39:33Speaker 4: would say, if the next person has the same season
- 39:36Speaker 4: that Mayo has, you got to fail fast there too.
- 39:39Speaker 4: I don't think so. I think that whoever they hire
- 39:43Speaker 4: this next time, I'm hoping has at least solid coordinator experience,
- 39:50Speaker 4: and like I said, from the get go, can hit
- 39:54Speaker 4: the ground running a lot more so than Gerard was
- 39:57Speaker 4: able to do, and that he has better support than
- 40:02Speaker 4: Gerard had. And if all those things happen, then you
- 40:07Speaker 4: need to give the person more of a runway than
- 40:10Speaker 4: one season. You know, regardless of the record on Wolf Listen,
- 40:17Speaker 4: he's got a lot to prove too. You know, that
- 40:20Speaker 4: was not a good year in the draft or free agency.
- 40:25Speaker 4: You know, we always ask the question how much how
- 40:29Speaker 4: much say did he have on the picks prior to
- 40:31Speaker 4: this last year because they weren't good either. So there's
- 40:36Speaker 4: a lot of questions about him as well. And right
- 40:40Speaker 4: now he's here. But as we talked about last night,
- 40:43Speaker 4: I think a new head coach, depending on who it is,
- 40:47Speaker 4: is going to have a say in that.
- 40:48Speaker 5: I totally agree.
- 40:49Speaker 7: Yeah, I just I think it's a different, interesting, different
- 40:53Speaker 7: scenario though coming into year two, as you really look
- 40:55Speaker 7: at the new coach, you're kind of expecting and hoping
- 40:58Speaker 7: to rely on Drake may developing. And you know, this year,
- 41:01Speaker 7: I think we were saying that about the defensive side
- 41:04Speaker 7: of the ball. There's some carry over there there, you know,
- 41:05Speaker 7: there's some continuity coaching. We need them to be good,
- 41:09Speaker 7: we need them to you know, be the ones that
- 41:11Speaker 7: make sure we stay you know, above the line. And
- 41:14Speaker 7: I feel like that pressure is going to a little
- 41:15Speaker 7: bit be on the offense next year and Drake, because
- 41:17Speaker 7: if I don't know what the defense is going to
- 41:20Speaker 7: look like next year, coordinators all that stuff. I just
- 41:22Speaker 7: think there's a little little bit of pressure on Drake
- 41:24Speaker 7: and and hope that Drake can you know, come out
- 41:26Speaker 7: firing and you know, take some solid steps in the
- 41:29Speaker 7: second season to lead the way and set the tone
- 41:31Speaker 7: right out of the gate.
- 41:32Speaker 4: If you were Robert Kraft, because you brought up Drake
- 41:34Speaker 4: May and we haven't really talked about him in a while,
- 41:39Speaker 4: would you have a sit down with him and say, hey,
- 41:41Speaker 4: this might look a little crazy right now, but it's
- 41:44Speaker 4: gonna be okay, you know that type of thing, just
- 41:46Speaker 4: to assure him.
- 41:47Speaker 5: I mean, you mean, like more so than any other players. Yeah,
- 41:55Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 41:56Speaker 7: Yeah, No, I don't love this special meeting for it.
- 41:58Speaker 7: I love if this was a standard meeting that we're
- 42:00Speaker 7: having with everybody that I send the message, Well it
- 42:02Speaker 7: sounds like what they did today. Oh really, Well, tell
- 42:05Speaker 7: me they had a team meeting and.
- 42:06Speaker 4: Oh I didn't know that, So tell us about that.
- 42:07Speaker 7: Yeah, they said they had a team meeting this morning.
- 42:09Speaker 7: And it was interesting because Godchaw got asked, you know,
- 42:12Speaker 7: what was the what was the content? You know, what
- 42:14Speaker 7: was the message from the meeting this morning and Tetrick
- 42:16Speaker 7: wise a couple lockers down and he said, Yo, Das,
- 42:19Speaker 7: what was the message in the meeting today and on
- 42:21Speaker 7: to twenty twenty five? And that was it?
- 42:23Speaker 4: But who condempted the meeting?
- 42:25Speaker 5: Yeah, that's my question.
- 42:26Speaker 7: Did not specify, but they wouldn't. That's the I did.
- 42:31Speaker 4: That's the headline.
- 42:32Speaker 5: Who were they asked?
- 42:34Speaker 7: I didn't. I don't know, not that I.
- 42:36Speaker 5: Know you said it was a scrum, and it's that
- 42:39Speaker 5: that's the main question were asked. I'm sure they were.
- 42:42Speaker 5: I mean I have I mean, you know me, I couldn't.
- 42:45Speaker 7: Think less someone who general?
- 42:48Speaker 5: But someone had to ask, well, who was in charge
- 42:50Speaker 5: of that? Who?
- 42:52Speaker 4: The meaning was it? Elliott Wolf? Was it? You know?
- 42:56Speaker 4: I I That's what I wanted. Was Robert Kraft?
- 42:59Speaker 5: That's the question.
- 43:00Speaker 4: You know, I would hope that Robert was there.
- 43:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I wouldn't be opposed, Fred to your original question,
- 43:08Speaker 5: if you wanted to say, like in addition to that,
- 43:10Speaker 5: like so they had a team meeting, they talked to everybody.
- 43:13Speaker 5: I would I don't think I would love the the
- 43:16Speaker 5: optics of it, just being Drake may like we're going
- 43:20Speaker 5: to single out this quarterback and we're going to let
- 43:22Speaker 5: this quarterback know if you have problems come to you
- 43:25Speaker 5: can cover.
- 43:26Speaker 7: It was Robert was, the team is a brief meeting
- 43:31Speaker 7: late this morning.
- 43:31Speaker 5: Good, Okay, that's good. I do. I agree.
- 43:34Speaker 4: I don't. I don't mean like, hey, if you have problems,
- 43:36Speaker 4: come to me.
- 43:37Speaker 6: No.
- 43:37Speaker 5: But I say, by having an individual meeting with him,
- 43:40Speaker 5: it sort of lets him know that you're special. I
- 43:42Speaker 5: don't want that. I want, you know, and I'm not
- 43:45Speaker 5: saying he has to have a meeting with every individual player,
- 43:47Speaker 5: but can we have like a group that maybe he
- 43:50Speaker 5: meets with, you know, the captain, you know, the captains
- 43:53Speaker 5: and other you know obviously you know, may I get it.
- 43:57Speaker 5: He's the starting quarterback and he does you know. It's
- 44:00Speaker 5: it's a cold reality. I thought this was really interesting
- 44:02Speaker 5: dron Harmon yesterday, when we were talking in the pregame show,
- 44:06Speaker 5: I asked him some questions about locker room dynamics in
- 44:09Speaker 5: terms of these games, you know, these quote unquote meetingless games,
- 44:13Speaker 5: and who plays who doesn't. Is there ever any you know,
- 44:17Speaker 5: animosity among.
- 44:18Speaker 4: Fellows like you.
- 44:21Speaker 5: I used as an example yesterday Buffalo Deon Dawkins is
- 44:24Speaker 5: the left tackleiner Brown's the right tackle. Deon Dawkins was inactive,
- 44:28Speaker 5: Spencer Brown wasn't. Now Spencer Brown didn't play, but you know, like,
- 44:33Speaker 5: is there ever any like, well how come he gets
- 44:35Speaker 5: to be an active But I don't, you know, and
- 44:38Speaker 5: Harmon was was pretty pretty forthcoming. It's like, you know,
- 44:41Speaker 5: I think we all understand like Tom Brady's a little different,
- 44:44Speaker 5: you know, and he's a little bit more vital to
- 44:46Speaker 5: our team six, our overall success and how that plays out.
- 44:50Speaker 5: And I think that players in general understand that. So
- 44:53Speaker 5: I get that May is the quarterback and the other
- 44:56Speaker 5: players understand that. I just I would rather it be
- 44:59Speaker 5: with like a group of captains and then maybe like
- 45:02Speaker 5: a group of people you don't other veterans foundation like
- 45:07Speaker 5: May and I used the word veteran, not necessarily an experience.
- 45:11Speaker 5: But he's your starting quarterback, so you know that.
- 45:14Speaker 4: So I guess my point is whether it's May or May,
- 45:17Speaker 4: And like you said, I want them to go into
- 45:20Speaker 4: this offseason at least with the idea that it's gonna be, Okay,
- 45:25Speaker 4: we've got this covered, You're gonna come back and we're
- 45:28Speaker 4: gonna have it's going to be a well run, well
- 45:31Speaker 4: oiled organization. Don't worry about it. Yeah, just get stay
- 45:37Speaker 4: in shape, get your mind right, take some time off, decompress,
- 45:41Speaker 4: but be ready because we are going for it next year.
- 45:45Speaker 7: I think that's like to me, the message of it
- 45:47Speaker 7: happening so quick, I mean that that's a positive as
- 45:49Speaker 7: far as the player is saying this isn't acceptable. And
- 45:52Speaker 7: then you know, and it's hard for Drake. It's his
- 45:53Speaker 7: first NFL season. He has nothing else to really compare
- 45:56Speaker 7: it to. But I just I think the message this
- 45:58Speaker 7: morning is that, look, we want to win football games
- 46:01Speaker 7: here and we're not going to just stand on business
- 46:03Speaker 7: because it's going to be difficult to hire a whole
- 46:05Speaker 7: new staff like this was unacceptable this year and we're
- 46:08Speaker 7: moving on right away. So I think in that regard, hopefully,
- 46:10Speaker 7: you know, Drake takes that message and you know, like
- 46:12Speaker 7: I said, he needs a big offseason. He needs to
- 46:14Speaker 7: lead this team next year, and he needs to be
- 46:16Speaker 7: one of the guys that you know, along with a
- 46:17Speaker 7: new coach, holds them to a higher standard this year.
- 46:20Speaker 4: Yeah, let's see phones are lit up. We'll go to
- 46:25Speaker 4: Evan in London. What's up, Evan?
- 46:28Speaker 11: Oh, it's hi.
- 46:29Speaker 10: I've read it's Adam, Adam, thank you. I'm gonna be
- 46:34Speaker 10: the first fan for Paul to kind of put in
- 46:37Speaker 10: the check mark about what the fans thought. I know
- 46:40Speaker 10: Rabel is the people's choice due to his you know,
- 46:43Speaker 10: head coach experience and his history with us, But do
- 46:45Speaker 10: you just think that a clean break from the whole
- 46:48Speaker 10: dynasty Patriot way is kind of the best thing?
- 46:51Speaker 3: Now?
- 46:51Speaker 15: I mean, I'm prepared to be wrong, but I kind
- 46:53Speaker 15: of wonder if I know that obviously Ben Johnson's going
- 46:56Speaker 15: into for interview, but is a tight pants guy kind
- 47:00Speaker 15: of a way to go now that you know the
- 47:02Speaker 15: way the league is going. Like you guys said at
- 47:04Speaker 15: the start, obviously he's got Bruce credentials and tell us
- 47:07Speaker 15: what the vision is and who you can bring in.
- 47:09Speaker 4: But I just I just.
- 47:10Speaker 15: Start to wonder, is it kind of best if we
- 47:13Speaker 15: enjoyed the years that we had, but going a new direction.
- 47:15Speaker 15: But I'll take it offline, guys, But thanks very much.
- 47:17Speaker 4: No, Adam, Sorry, It's a good point that I've heard before,
- 47:22Speaker 4: like a clean break from the dynasty, someone who isn't
- 47:26Speaker 4: the frame of reference, isn't that era, and bring something
- 47:31Speaker 4: totally fresh into the building, you know, not and you know,
- 47:34Speaker 4: I know we talked about this last night, Mike, and
- 47:36Speaker 4: you're like, you know, why do we need to like
- 47:38Speaker 4: forget about all of that, you know, why what's wrong
- 47:41Speaker 4: with all that stuff? And I hear that too, But
- 47:45Speaker 4: that is a line of thinking that there needs to
- 47:49Speaker 4: be a clean break. Let's get somebody in whose success
- 47:52Speaker 4: isn't tied to that so they're not constantly falling back
- 47:55Speaker 4: on what was done back then.
- 47:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:58Speaker 7: I mean, I think that's why I like Rabel because
- 48:00Speaker 7: he's has a little Obviously, he's a Hall of Fame
- 48:02Speaker 7: player for us here and so there's a familiarity. But
- 48:05Speaker 7: it's not like he was only with Bill and only
- 48:08Speaker 7: understands Bill's coaching method After Rabel I would agree with
- 48:12Speaker 7: just the general point of I mean, look, the drafts
- 48:14Speaker 7: have been really rough. I don't know who you're pointing out,
- 48:16Speaker 7: but a lot of the same guys are here that
- 48:18Speaker 7: have been picking players for the last few years. That
- 48:20Speaker 7: to me, like you want to talk about turning things
- 48:22Speaker 7: upside down, I'd look at I'd look at the scouting apartment,
- 48:25Speaker 7: I'd look at them, you know, being able to bring
- 48:28Speaker 7: in some new blood, some new perspectives on that and
- 48:31Speaker 7: you know, I think that's what excited me about Elliot
- 48:32Speaker 7: Wolf last year was that he felt a little bit
- 48:34Speaker 7: like an outsider at that point. I know he's been
- 48:37Speaker 7: around for a couple of years and had probably had
- 48:39Speaker 7: input on the draft, but even still, I.
- 48:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I could be sold on Vrabel because he's the
- 48:45Speaker 5: experience in the other organizations. His time in Tennessee, Houston,
- 48:49Speaker 5: and to a lesser extent, Cleveland kind of gives you like,
- 48:54Speaker 5: it's not it's not just Bills, Like, he's not a
- 48:59Speaker 5: Bill Tree guy per se, even though he is a Patriot.
- 49:03Speaker 5: But I do I would put myself in the category.
- 49:05Speaker 5: I do want a clean break. So if you can
- 49:08Speaker 5: sell me on Ben Johnson or somebody else, I think
- 49:11Speaker 5: I would be willing to listen to that. But I
- 49:13Speaker 5: do like the fact that at least Rabel is not
- 49:16Speaker 5: just the same old, same old.
- 49:17Speaker 4: He's not and he's we know, he's his own guy.
- 49:19Speaker 5: He is his own guy. And he didn't learn coaching
- 49:22Speaker 5: necessarily under Bill Right he was a playerner Billy, you know,
- 49:26Speaker 5: he learned coaching in other organizations, where like McDaniels and Patricia,
- 49:31Speaker 5: they went to other organizations to run them, to be
- 49:34Speaker 5: the head coaches after being under Bill, this is different.
- 49:38Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:38Speaker 7: And I don't even like, I don't even know if
- 49:40Speaker 7: Rabel runs like the same defense that Bill really ran.
- 49:43Speaker 7: You know, like, I don't even know schematically how much
- 49:45Speaker 7: crossover there is there, But.
- 49:46Speaker 5: I leave that to you all, twenty two Cowboys.
- 49:48Speaker 7: I just think, though it's it's funny. It's the same
- 49:49Speaker 7: thing with the draft. It's the same thing with free agency.
- 49:51Speaker 7: You're just you're kind of a prisoner to who's available.
- 49:53Speaker 7: And of course Mike Frabel's the obvious choice, and then
- 49:56Speaker 7: Ben Johnson gets thrown in the mix as the you know,
- 49:58Speaker 7: offensive coordinator who's really hot right now? But you know,
- 50:01Speaker 7: you just there aren't a lot of choices. There aren't like, well,
- 50:03Speaker 7: this guy.
- 50:04Speaker 5: This obvious interviewing you know, one of I think the
- 50:06Speaker 5: Jets I saw today.
- 50:08Speaker 4: He's Aaron Glens out there.
- 50:10Speaker 5: Aaron Glenn's been requested for a couple of teams, and
- 50:14Speaker 5: you know, we talked about Sweet lou In Aroumo. You know,
- 50:19Speaker 5: it was let go by the Bengals. He's a well
- 50:22Speaker 5: regarded defensive coordinator whose defense fell apart.
- 50:25Speaker 4: Another name I heard I'm talking.
- 50:27Speaker 5: About as a defensive coordinator.
- 50:29Speaker 4: Another name I heard he's been in the NFL and
- 50:31Speaker 4: college is Steve.
- 50:33Speaker 5: Sarkisian.
- 50:34Speaker 4: Sarkisian, Oh sorry, you know, as a possible tight pants
- 50:39Speaker 4: guy coming in.
- 50:41Speaker 7: Yeah yeah, I don't love in Alabama. Yeah yeah, I
- 50:44Speaker 7: just I think what scares me a little bit and
- 50:45Speaker 7: what's appealing about Hey bunch of Texas Now, no matter
- 50:48Speaker 7: who it is, it's a little bit scary going down
- 50:51Speaker 7: this road again with someone who's never been a head
- 50:52Speaker 7: coach before. And I know that, like, that's also exciting
- 50:54Speaker 7: and that's where you might find gold. But there's also like, man,
- 50:57Speaker 7: we just tired a guy who didn't really have experience
- 51:00Speaker 7: doing this, at least with v Abel. You know, he's
- 51:02Speaker 7: done it before, he's got philosophies, he knows how it works,
- 51:06Speaker 7: and that you know, that's appealing to me too. But again,
- 51:09Speaker 7: if you take a swing on a random guy, he
- 51:11Speaker 7: might be the next Sean.
- 51:12Speaker 5: I prefer a new guy who hasn't had a job yet.
- 51:16Speaker 5: But I need to know the Fred Kirsch questions like
- 51:18Speaker 5: I need to know the plan, what you plan? What's
- 51:20Speaker 5: your structure? Who do you have? You know, what's going
- 51:23Speaker 5: to be your study?
- 51:24Speaker 4: To look inside your soul, right, I.
- 51:27Speaker 5: Just think I think I would feel better Mike if.
- 51:31Speaker 4: To a lot of people need to see inside your
- 51:35Speaker 4: I mean I trust him.
- 51:36Speaker 7: I trust him.
- 51:37Speaker 5: He hired me with a stain on his shirt?
- 51:39Speaker 4: Did I have a stand?
- 51:40Speaker 5: Of course you did.
- 51:42Speaker 4: Izz He's in Canada. What's up is he?
- 51:46Speaker 6: Hey? Guys?
- 51:47Speaker 16: Uh's been watching you?
- 51:48Speaker 5: Guys?
- 51:51Speaker 4: Where are you?
- 51:53Speaker 17: Is he?
- 51:55Speaker 16: I'm going to go season and and I'm going to
- 51:58Speaker 16: be brutally honest. This season was a disaster, guys. I
- 52:03Speaker 16: mean it was a complete joke. I mean, you draft
- 52:06Speaker 16: the guy, Let's just put it this way. You draft
- 52:08Speaker 16: the top three quarterback, right, you get Drake May and
- 52:13Speaker 16: you don't start him. Like, my whole thing was, why
- 52:15Speaker 16: didn't we start Drake from week one? We know he
- 52:19Speaker 16: was the guy, we know he was doing amazing and
- 52:22Speaker 16: training camp. We we knew that this guy has potential
- 52:26Speaker 16: to be really good in this league. And we knew that,
- 52:29Speaker 16: so we started what Jacoby for the first four or
- 52:32Speaker 16: five weeks and then the team went downfall after that. Right,
- 52:37Speaker 16: there is no motivation on the players. And not to mention,
- 52:41Speaker 16: I love Gerard Mao as a player for what he
- 52:44Speaker 16: did for us. I respect him hats off to him.
- 52:47Speaker 16: At least he tried. But you know, I think the
- 52:50Speaker 16: team just fell apart right after that comment saying we're
- 52:54Speaker 16: just a soft football team. You know, you had a
- 52:57Speaker 16: lot of these players who are on the down side.
- 53:00Speaker 14: They didn't like it.
- 53:01Speaker 16: We gave away Jude On for a bag of chips.
- 53:06Speaker 5: A third round. I disagree with this call in general. Yeah,
- 53:09Speaker 5: I mean, other than the season's been a disaster, I agree.
- 53:12Speaker 5: I think everybody agrees with that, and I think Robert
- 53:14Speaker 5: Kraft agree. But they're otherwise, we wouldn't have made this move, right, right,
- 53:18Speaker 5: But right, I mean they won more games of percent
- 53:21Speaker 5: than any other quarterbacks. Yeah, you know, I know that's
- 53:24Speaker 5: not saying two to one.
- 53:26Speaker 4: But I do agree with Izzy. I think they should
- 53:27Speaker 4: have started driving.
- 53:28Speaker 5: I think they should have too. But I don't have
- 53:30Speaker 5: any illusions that the the record would have been worse,
- 53:32Speaker 5: not better.
- 53:33Speaker 4: Yeah, nothing to do with the record.
- 53:36Speaker 16: Maybe those four losses wouldn't have been lost, as you.
- 53:39Speaker 4: Know, I don't know.
- 53:39Speaker 5: I think they would have been lost as by more
- 53:41Speaker 5: points based on the amount of times Drake may turn
- 53:43Speaker 5: the ball over. Like that's what I think they were
- 53:46Speaker 5: concerned about. Brissette protected the ball. That's why they gave
- 53:50Speaker 5: him a chance. Now, when they weren't winning games, even
- 53:51Speaker 5: though they weren't turning it over, they made the move.
- 53:54Speaker 4: I think we underestimate Isy, and thanks for the call,
- 53:57Speaker 4: because I think what we are estimate and might have
- 54:00Speaker 4: been behind the thinking of not starting May right away
- 54:04Speaker 4: and putting in Brissette is these coaches were trying to
- 54:07Speaker 4: figure things out too, and let's let's at least have
- 54:10Speaker 4: an experienced quarterback in there while we figure out how
- 54:13Speaker 4: to call play.
- 54:14Speaker 5: You remember how that game unfolded, But do you remember,
- 54:18Speaker 5: like I know, everybody looks at this game with like
- 54:21Speaker 5: such reverence. Now what do you remember, like the amount
- 54:24Speaker 5: of times that Jacoby set miraculously avoided disaster in that game?
- 54:29Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, escaping pressure?
- 54:31Speaker 5: Like now, I understand that you can make an argument
- 54:34Speaker 5: that maybe May is able to run more like and
- 54:39Speaker 5: get more yards, But doesn't it stand to reason based
- 54:42Speaker 5: on the the eleven games you watched Drake may play
- 54:44Speaker 5: that he had to turn the ball over a couple
- 54:47Speaker 5: of times in that game.
- 54:48Speaker 4: Yeah, and that was as clean a game as you
- 54:51Speaker 4: could imagine, right for the Patriots?
- 54:53Speaker 5: And again, is he I'm Fred and I are with you.
- 54:56Speaker 5: I think Mike as well, Like I would have started
- 54:58Speaker 5: him from week one, but I had no illusions on
- 55:01Speaker 5: this season, and I do not think their record would
- 55:04Speaker 5: have been better had he played every game. He went
- 55:07Speaker 5: one in nine. Yeah, that had nothing to do with
- 55:10Speaker 5: I'm not counting the other two games that he winning
- 55:12Speaker 5: games was not my reason for starting him week one.
- 55:15Speaker 5: I mean, you can make an argument that the best
- 55:17Speaker 5: quarterback performance they got all season was yesterday. Yeah, you
- 55:22Speaker 5: can make that argument. I'm sorry, wrong.
- 55:26Speaker 4: Well, you're not wrong, at least the first half.
- 55:31Speaker 5: Yeah, but he didn't turn like he didn't really turn
- 55:35Speaker 5: the ball. I mean he made I don't know who
- 55:36Speaker 5: got credit for the fumble.
- 55:38Speaker 4: It was an exchange?
- 55:39Speaker 5: Was it an a boarded play? Yeah? Well, I mean
- 55:42Speaker 5: maybe I guess you could say he got credit with
- 55:44Speaker 5: the fumble. But he didn't throw anything resembling an interception.
- 55:48Speaker 5: He kept the ball out of harm's way.
- 55:51Speaker 4: They didn't want to intercept it the other tea. So
- 55:55Speaker 4: you have to fat, you have to factor.
- 55:57Speaker 5: Can I can I just pick that. I'm not telling
- 55:59Speaker 5: you that Joe Milton is the don't. I'm just I'm
- 56:01Speaker 5: just talking about the way that the game's unfolded and whatnot.
- 56:04Speaker 5: But like, I just want to scratch this one. This
- 56:07Speaker 5: one's really bothering me.
- 56:08Speaker 4: Like, here we go.
- 56:09Speaker 5: Now, one final nail in Gerrod Mayo's coffin is that
- 56:12Speaker 5: he won the game yesterday. Okay, call me Sunshine dot
- 56:16Speaker 5: com all you want. I don't care. What exactly was
- 56:20Speaker 5: he supposed to do that he didn't do right to
- 56:22Speaker 5: try to lose that game. And I'm sorry it does
- 56:25Speaker 5: doesn't make any sense because I know I've talked to
- 56:27Speaker 5: a lot of people, and I've talked to a lot
- 56:29Speaker 5: of Patriots fans. They're all in agreement that Sean McDermott
- 56:33Speaker 5: did not want the Patriots to win because he didn't
- 56:36Speaker 5: want him to get the first overall pick. I'm not
- 56:38Speaker 5: arguing with those people if that's how they feel. This
- 56:42Speaker 5: is my argument. How can you say that McDermott did
- 56:45Speaker 5: everything he could to lose the game so he could
- 56:47Speaker 5: screw the Patriots when he did the exact same thing
- 56:50Speaker 5: that Gerrod Mayo did, But Mayo didn't do everything he
- 56:53Speaker 5: could to lose the game.
- 56:54Speaker 4: Yeah, they they.
- 56:57Speaker 5: Both emptied their practice squads, they both played their third
- 57:00Speaker 5: string quarterbacks.
- 57:02Speaker 4: I've heard some people say once once the Bill's got
- 57:04Speaker 4: that lead, just hand the ball off, don't don't try
- 57:07Speaker 4: to score points.
- 57:10Speaker 5: I've heard that who like who don't try to score
- 57:14Speaker 5: a point?
- 57:14Speaker 4: Patriots, Like, after the Bill's got that lead, we scored again,
- 57:18Speaker 4: you know, to go ahead again. Seventeen sixteen, they like
- 57:24Speaker 4: they got like twenty yards drives.
- 57:25Speaker 5: They were kicking field goals. It wasn't like they moved
- 57:27Speaker 5: the ball like in the second half. I know, like,
- 57:29Speaker 5: what are you supposed to do? Are you supposed to
- 57:31Speaker 5: ask you a third string quarterback who's trying to make
- 57:34Speaker 5: a living?
- 57:34Speaker 4: I hear you.
- 57:35Speaker 5: You're supposed to say, Joe, don't try to score points, right, right?
- 57:39Speaker 4: I know it's like they're professionals, that's what you know.
- 57:43Speaker 5: The guys that were playing or playing for their livelihood.
- 57:45Speaker 4: Right. Even Mike White was trying to complete passes. I
- 57:48Speaker 4: believe he just couldn't.
- 57:50Speaker 5: He just stinks, right, I believe he was trying. I
- 57:52Speaker 5: don't believe he overthrew keyon Coleman on purpose on that
- 57:55Speaker 5: crossing route.
- 57:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 57:57Speaker 5: It's just I just don't understand how you can say
- 58:00Speaker 5: that McDermott tried to lose and Mayo tried to win
- 58:04Speaker 5: based on the personnel usage that they both had. The
- 58:08Speaker 5: difference in the game was your third string quarterback played
- 58:11Speaker 5: better than their third string quarterback. That was the difference
- 58:14Speaker 5: in the game, because when Trubisky was in there, it
- 58:16Speaker 5: was back and forth. When he left, Buffalo didn't score again.
- 58:21Speaker 4: Yeah, Jason's in Chiva, Japan. What's up, Jay?
- 58:25Speaker 5: I think it's Cheapa, remember Ja.
- 58:27Speaker 4: Yeah, what's up Jason? Jason?
- 58:31Speaker 5: Jason?
- 58:33Speaker 4: Those tsunamis, that's not that's not put it next to
- 58:37Speaker 4: another diamond.
- 58:38Speaker 5: It's Japan. It's a long time.
- 58:39Speaker 4: All right, call back. We'll go to Ray in Atlanta.
- 58:43Speaker 4: What's up, Ray?
- 58:44Speaker 5: It's a quarter now, Paul.
- 58:46Speaker 18: Hey, y'all guys doing all right?
- 58:48Speaker 5: Hey? Ray?
- 58:49Speaker 18: Hey, Yeah, I enjoyed that preseason yesterday I was going
- 58:53Speaker 18: but yeah, definitely okay because you know, respectfully speaking, glad
- 59:04Speaker 18: that you know Jerrod.
- 59:07Speaker 4: We're having trouble with the connections today.
- 59:10Speaker 18: He had a good run, but you know, you gotta go,
- 59:14Speaker 18: you know, and and you know, I look forward to
- 59:18Speaker 18: the future and Robert Kraft speech in a few minutes
- 59:22Speaker 18: is going to be a movie. Grab your popcorn because
- 59:25Speaker 18: we'll know who's gonna unfold. I'm trusting the journey on.
- 59:31Speaker 18: It looked like, you know, it's gonna be brighter days
- 59:34Speaker 18: in a in a long run. And Joe Milon does
- 59:39Speaker 18: he did his thing yesterday. Keep him, you know, keep him,
- 59:42Speaker 18: Keep Drake May of course that's one quarterback, but keep
- 59:46Speaker 18: mil in because you know, it looked like he got
- 59:49Speaker 18: done there.
- 59:50Speaker 5: You know, absolute might be your backup. That's I think
- 59:52Speaker 5: that's not an insignificant fact. If you have a cheap,
- 59:55Speaker 5: affordable backup, I think that's a good that's a good asset.
- 59:59Speaker 18: Yep, exactly. And you know it was just it was
- 1:00:03Speaker 18: just getting out of hand with with the coach, you know,
- 1:00:08Speaker 18: empty promises, backtracking things. And this is the overall demeanor
- 1:00:15Speaker 18: of him, you know. I mean, I'm not gonna talk
- 1:00:17Speaker 18: about the guy he met. He met well, but he's
- 1:00:20Speaker 18: just not right now or whatever. He's just not fit
- 1:00:24Speaker 18: for us. He'll be successful down the line, somewhere somebody
- 1:00:28Speaker 18: can pick him up, you know, and he'll be he'll
- 1:00:31Speaker 18: he'll he'll be great. And as far as the draft picks,
- 1:00:35Speaker 18: I understand that, you know, a lot of majority of
- 1:00:37Speaker 18: people are angry about you know, the number one you
- 1:00:40Speaker 18: know pick. But first dips don't necessarily mean the greatest
- 1:00:46Speaker 18: of players at that at that number one. You know,
- 1:00:51Speaker 18: you go down the line and find a diamond or
- 1:00:54Speaker 18: or or or something that changed the whole league, you know.
- 1:01:00Speaker 18: So I understand, you know that we didn't get the
- 1:01:02Speaker 18: number one, but we just got to work with what
- 1:01:04Speaker 18: we have to work with, and that's number four. You
- 1:01:07Speaker 18: know what's in for or you know, down the line.
- 1:01:10Speaker 18: But that's all I got here and saying y'all.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: Again, appreciate the call. Yep, let's go to dominic in
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: New York. Hey, dominic, Hell, y'all, how you doing all right?
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: Yeah, So this situation.
- 1:01:28Speaker 6: I feel terrible for Gerard because I put him in
- 1:01:34Speaker 6: an untenable situation. I know that he has all the
- 1:01:39Speaker 6: tools as a head coach to be successful in this league.
- 1:01:45Speaker 6: He just needed more time before taking the job. In
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: the end, I'm a fan of this team first, and
- 1:01:56Speaker 6: now I have to go out and find a coach
- 1:02:00Speaker 6: who can guess get us back to the playoffs and
- 1:02:04Speaker 6: hopefully championships. We're open for questions.
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: But Wally Bobert, just when was the decision made in
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: your mind?
- 1:02:19Speaker 7: When was it that you felt you needed to let
- 1:02:22Speaker 7: him go?
- 1:02:24Speaker 6: This whole situation evolved, but I'd say over the last
- 1:02:29Speaker 6: month I went back and forth, and.
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:02:35Speaker 6: In my life and my business, I make certain decisions.
- 1:02:40Speaker 6: I know when it's right, and it just happened, and
- 1:02:43Speaker 6: it was very hard because the personal relationship I feel
- 1:02:49Speaker 6: for girod and and the human being he is, and
- 1:02:56Speaker 6: I felt guilty I put him in that position. But
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: we're moving on.
- 1:03:03Speaker 19: Hey, Robert, what will happen with, for instance, the personnel department?
- 1:03:09Speaker 19: What decisions have you made with whoever the next coach
- 1:03:12Speaker 19: is having the latitude to bring in his own players,
- 1:03:16Speaker 19: his own skelling staff, his own coaches.
- 1:03:18Speaker 6: Yeah, well, we'll wait till we bring that coach in.
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: And he's obviously see he's gonna have big input on
- 1:03:30Speaker 6: who the players are and who the coaches are. It
- 1:03:33Speaker 6: would be his decisions, So.
- 1:03:37Speaker 19: At this juncture would be status quo for everybody on
- 1:03:39Speaker 19: the staff until the individuals.
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: Yes, well, let look, we move fast and we're gonna
- 1:03:46Speaker 6: let him make those decisions.
- 1:03:50Speaker 20: How much going, Roy But I know that you don't
- 1:03:53Speaker 20: make snap decisions. So I was wondering, at what point
- 1:03:57Speaker 20: during the season did you say something was not right?
- 1:04:00Speaker 20: And if you could expand on that what caught your
- 1:04:02Speaker 20: attention that something wasn't right.
- 1:04:05Speaker 6: Well, in the important decisions in my life, I've always
- 1:04:11Speaker 6: said I measured nine times and cut once, and this
- 1:04:16Speaker 6: was one of those situations. I guess the main thing
- 1:04:20Speaker 6: for me is I felt we regressed the high The
- 1:04:25Speaker 6: high point of everything for me was winning in the
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: Cincinnati game, and then in mid mid season, I just
- 1:04:37Speaker 6: think we started to regress.
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: I don't hurt Robert.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: How significantly has fan reaction to the product on the
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: field and too drud specifically played into your decision.
- 1:04:52Speaker 6: Well, I'm the biggest fan, so I understand, and you
- 1:04:58Speaker 6: know i've all since the day we bought this team,
- 1:05:02Speaker 6: and I realized what a privilege it was and how
- 1:05:05Speaker 6: lucky we were as a family that this is the
- 1:05:11Speaker 6: only business we're involved in where I see ourselves. We
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: don't own this team. It's owned by the fans of
- 1:05:20Speaker 6: this region, and we're custodians of a very us or
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: last out of the community. And that's why that helps
- 1:05:30Speaker 6: me try to make decisions that if it was just personal,
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: it would be different.
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: If you're telling.
- 1:05:40Speaker 21: Robert aside from yourself and Jonathan, who will be involved
- 1:05:43Speaker 21: in the head coaching interviews and what traits are you
- 1:05:46Speaker 21: looking for?
- 1:05:48Speaker 6: Well, well, we'll have Alonso high Smith and Elliott will
- 1:05:59Speaker 6: be involved and we're gonna try to understand who can
- 1:06:04Speaker 6: help us best get back to the playoffs.
- 1:06:12Speaker 9: Robert, does that mean Elliott and his staff are going
- 1:06:18Speaker 9: to continue on or with? The coaching hire also impact
- 1:06:22Speaker 9: your front office?
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: We are looking for people working together and there will
- 1:06:30Speaker 6: be staying on.
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: Or day.
- 1:06:35Speaker 17: Of Robert, When you say that the situation was untenable,
- 1:06:38Speaker 17: what about it specifically did you find untenable and how
- 1:06:43Speaker 17: will that influence how you approach this search.
- 1:06:51Speaker 6: I don't like losing. I don't like losing the way
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: we lost.
- 1:06:56Speaker 7: And.
- 1:06:59Speaker 6: I just just things we're not developing the way we
- 1:07:06Speaker 6: would have liked and it was time to move on.
- 1:07:14Speaker 22: Robert.
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: How big of a search do you plan on conducting?
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: How big of a coaching search do you plan on conducting?
- 1:07:21Speaker 6: Well, we we wanna interview as many people as we
- 1:07:27Speaker 6: can that we think can help us get to that
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: position that we wanna be in. So we have put
- 1:07:39Speaker 6: out and requests and uh Stacy will be filling you
- 1:07:45Speaker 6: in on that.
- 1:07:47Speaker 23: Job.
- 1:07:48Speaker 18: The Paul, Robert, thank you for taking our questions appreciate
- 1:07:53Speaker 18: it is Mike Vrabel at or near the top of
- 1:07:57Speaker 18: your list.
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: It seems to be. Uh, the talk.
- 1:08:02Speaker 6: We Before I make a comment like that, I'd like,
- 1:08:07Speaker 6: I don't know all the people involved, and uh, there
- 1:08:14Speaker 6: are some wonderful people that we've heard about, so I'd
- 1:08:18Speaker 6: rather respond to that after I've seen everyone talk.
- 1:08:23Speaker 22: To you, Robert, can you speak a bit more to
- 1:08:26Speaker 22: the timing of this? Did Gerard know before the game?
- 1:08:30Speaker 7: I'm right over here. Sorry, sorry, thank you.
- 1:08:33Speaker 22: I was wondering if you could speak a bit more
- 1:08:34Speaker 22: to the timing of this. Did Gerard know before the
- 1:08:37Speaker 22: game that this would be his last game coaching?
- 1:08:41Speaker 6: No, I know this was.
- 1:08:48Speaker 24: Very difficult for you to sit down with him. How
- 1:08:52Speaker 24: did he take it? How did he respond? Was he
- 1:08:54Speaker 24: shocked by the news? He was a man. Look, it
- 1:09:02Speaker 24: was one of the more difficult things I've had a
- 1:09:06Speaker 24: do in my life because I had such affection for
- 1:09:11Speaker 24: him and I believe in him, and I really do
- 1:09:15Speaker 24: believe he will go on and as he gets more experience,
- 1:09:23Speaker 24: it will be successful. It was not easy.
- 1:09:31Speaker 6: He was a gentleman and accepted it that way.
- 1:09:40Speaker 21: Robert, this is going to be very expensive buying out
- 1:09:45Speaker 21: a coaching staff, bringing in on new coaching staff. Perhaps
- 1:09:47Speaker 21: it goes to the personnel department. You also have one
- 1:09:50Speaker 21: hundred and twenty million dollars in cap space this year,
- 1:09:52Speaker 21: the most in the league. Well, what you spend on
- 1:09:55Speaker 21: this transition effect anything that you spend on players this offseason?
- 1:10:01Speaker 6: Yeah, i'd the answer is no, we will. We've always
- 1:10:10Speaker 6: had a situation where we spend to the cap and
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: if we go over the We have never told any
- 1:10:17Speaker 6: coach or limited the spending. The only thing we've said
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: is if you exceed the cap, we like to see
- 1:10:24Speaker 6: it over three years and you know so that we
- 1:10:30Speaker 6: never get way out of hand. But spending to the
- 1:10:35Speaker 6: cap or above the cap is not. We want to win.
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: That's our priority first.
- 1:10:41Speaker 25: Chris Gasper right, say hi, Robert back here, how are
- 1:10:46Speaker 25: you You guys were told this was a multi year rebuild,
- 1:10:49Speaker 25: that it wasn't going to turn around in one year.
- 1:10:52Speaker 25: You said, you believe in Gerad, you think he'll be
- 1:10:53Speaker 25: better with more experience, so why not let him get
- 1:10:56Speaker 25: that experience here? Knowing going in this was a multi
- 1:11:00Speaker 25: year process.
- 1:11:05Speaker 6: Yeah. From my point of view, I just thought we
- 1:11:08Speaker 6: were we had a rough year last year, not twenty
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: four to twenty three, and going through two years like
- 1:11:19Speaker 6: that and then seeing where we were this year, especially
- 1:11:24Speaker 6: the second high the year just told me, just made
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: me feel we weren't going in the direction, in the
- 1:11:32Speaker 6: right direction, and I can't. I don't want to go
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: through this next year, and we're going to do what
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: we got to do to fix it.
- 1:11:41Speaker 26: Which starts in the very bad Robert, Is there one
- 1:11:48Speaker 26: quality when you go through this search with a new
- 1:11:50Speaker 26: coach that you'll be looking for over everything else? Is
- 1:11:53Speaker 26: there one quality in your opinion that will help lead
- 1:11:57Speaker 26: to you getting back to being a contender and playing
- 1:11:59Speaker 26: for championships.
- 1:12:01Speaker 6: No, it's really a composite. I mean, you need someone
- 1:12:06Speaker 6: who players can relate to and respond to, but they
- 1:12:11Speaker 6: need to have a team around them that has product
- 1:12:14Speaker 6: knowledge in game adjustments, knowing what their system is. Just
- 1:12:21Speaker 6: a lot of things coming together, Robert.
- 1:12:26Speaker 23: We saw Jonathan very animated during the Cardinals game on television.
- 1:12:31Speaker 23: How much was he involved in this decision and how
- 1:12:35Speaker 23: is he going to be involved in this decision about
- 1:12:39Speaker 23: who your next coach will be?
- 1:12:41Speaker 6: Well, for over thirty years he's been with me, and
- 1:12:45Speaker 6: most decisions I've made in my life surely business ones
- 1:12:49Speaker 6: that are important, so he will continue to be involved
- 1:12:53Speaker 6: with me.
- 1:12:56Speaker 27: Hi, Robert, thank you for taking the time. I was
- 1:12:59Speaker 27: just curious. We know that you addressed the team this morning.
- 1:13:02Speaker 27: We know that you addressed the team this morning, and
- 1:13:05Speaker 27: a lot of the players were very on board with Drod.
- 1:13:08Speaker 27: They really liked him. What was kind of the reaction
- 1:13:10Speaker 27: from the players in terms of this decision?
- 1:13:14Speaker 6: Well, I didn't get a chance to really interact. We've
- 1:13:24Speaker 6: believe it or not. We had some very important outside
- 1:13:28Speaker 6: people coming here today on something unrelated to the Patriots.
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: That's why we scheduled it this day a while back,
- 1:13:37Speaker 6: and I spoke to them about how I felt about
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: Girard and what I tried to convey here today.
- 1:13:47Speaker 8: Earlier, a couple of questions, Robert, did you have any
- 1:13:53Speaker 8: input with the coaching staff about how to handle the
- 1:13:56Speaker 8: final game of the season with the number one overall
- 1:13:59Speaker 8: picket stake I have?
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: Did you have any input did you talk to the
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: coaching staff about how to handle the game?
- 1:14:04Speaker 19: Now, Tom Kerr, this is a lot, Hey, Robert, I
- 1:14:11Speaker 19: get number two the personnel department this past year, and
- 1:14:16Speaker 19: free agency didn't really have a banner year, and also
- 1:14:19Speaker 19: in the draft and Elliott and some of the other
- 1:14:22Speaker 19: individuals there Mac grow have been part of the personnel
- 1:14:24Speaker 19: department for a number of years. What is it that
- 1:14:27Speaker 19: stands out to you about them that they should continue
- 1:14:31Speaker 19: forward in the team building when the roster is not great.
- 1:14:35Speaker 6: Yeah, I think that the department evolved a lot and
- 1:14:43Speaker 6: a lot of things were changed. We changed our grading
- 1:14:47Speaker 6: system this year and have done things. Our drafts have
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: not been good for a while, and that's not if
- 1:14:57Speaker 6: you want if you want to compete long term and
- 1:15:01Speaker 6: be good in this league, you got to have good
- 1:15:03Speaker 6: drafts because those rookie contracts allow you to go out
- 1:15:08Speaker 6: and get the people you need to surround people for
- 1:15:13Speaker 6: we looks like we locked out. We maybe have two quarterbacks,
- 1:15:23Speaker 6: but I think we'll hopefully see a big improvement this year.
- 1:15:30Speaker 6: Thank you very much. I appreciate you all giving us
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: the time.
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: Okay, that was Robert Kraft answering questions. A lot to
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: digest there.
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: I don't think it was an easy decision. Yeah, I
- 1:15:47Speaker 5: mean we all could have imagined that, but you could
- 1:15:49Speaker 5: you could see and hear it in his voice, see
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: it in his face and hear it in his voice.
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: I mean The first thing he said was how badly
- 1:15:56Speaker 4: he felt for putting Gerard in this position. And I
- 1:16:00Speaker 4: think you can't get more accountable than that.
- 1:16:02Speaker 5: This is on me. I put him in an untenable situation.
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, so that needed to be said.
- 1:16:07Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that stood out.
- 1:16:08Speaker 7: I mean that seems like that was kind of the
- 1:16:10Speaker 7: centerpiece of the whole thing.
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: Well short statement, Yeah, I don't know if that was
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: of the statement. Yeah, absolutely, But as we got into
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: the questions, I thought it was interesting. On the Elliot
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: Wolf question, we heard a couple of things that, you know,
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: the coach coming in will have a lot of input,
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: but that Elliott will be staying.
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: He was asked a question. I think Tom Curran's first
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: question was the state of the personnel department and the
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: answer was, we're going to leave that up to the
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: new coach and obviously he's going to have a lot
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: of input on that and we'll make leave those decisions
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: to him. A few questions later, when he was asked
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: about who will be involved in the interview process, Alonzo
- 1:16:55Speaker 5: Highsmith and Elliott Wolf were the two names that he
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: mentioned that will be with I presume Robert and Jonathan,
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: which begged to follow up which Karen Grigian asked, what
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: is the state of Elliott Wolf? And I think Robert
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: said that he expects those two to be back, So
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: so I'm not necessarily sure that Maybe Robert didn't necessarily
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: think personnel department was Elliott Wolf, right, and Alonzo Highsmith.
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: Maybe he's talking scouts and.
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: But but the follow up I guess that needed to
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: be asked from there is if the person that you
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: want says I want my own personnel, is that a
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: deal breaker? Is that a deal breaker?
- 1:17:38Speaker 7: Especially when Elliott Wolf and Alonzo high Smith are leading
- 1:17:42Speaker 7: the interviews, which reminds.
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: Means hiring me, you're fired right.
- 1:17:45Speaker 7: Well with Bill in Atlanta, you know where they pull
- 1:17:49Speaker 7: the internal coaches or the internal personnel people, Nobody, none
- 1:17:52Speaker 7: of them wanted Bill.
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: That's a great that's a great comment, Mike. So Elliott
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: Wolf is going to come in, Mike, what do you
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: think you're gonna do with the personnel department? Well, I
- 1:18:01Speaker 5: have a guy in mind. It's this Ryan Cowden. No,
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: you know, Robert, he's not he's not right. We don't
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: want him like that's kind of the way it's been
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: portrayed as have him gone down in Atlanta, you know,
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: the Rich McKay's and the the is it Terry Fonto?
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: I think think it's Terry. These guys all had their
- 1:18:19Speaker 5: jobs and they all felt threatened if Bill came in.
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: So if Ben Johnson wants a new personnel guy and
- 1:18:28Speaker 5: the personnel guys that are existing that Roberts seems to
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: think are gonna be here, how does that work?
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:18:35Speaker 7: It's got to be clarified to some degree. I think
- 1:18:37Speaker 7: it's but I mean probably in the interview process itself.
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: But you know, I think I think you're right, though
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: maybe it's he's confusing a little bit. Who who we're
- 1:18:44Speaker 7: talking We're talking to the scout.
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: But doesn't that make sense that maybe he's thinking of
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: personnel department, is you know, you know, the Cameron Williams
- 1:18:51Speaker 5: of the world, and you know, and he's thinking of
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: like Elliott Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith. Is a little bit
- 1:18:58Speaker 5: higher than that.
- 1:18:59Speaker 7: Yeah, fact people did use front office.
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: Yeah no, I I think the reporters had no ambiguity.
- 1:19:07Speaker 5: They were talking about everybody, and I think I think
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: Robert's answer may have been sort of, I don't know,
- 1:19:16Speaker 5: clouded a little bit. Maybe he was confused as to
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: which elements he was talking about. I don't know. I
- 1:19:21Speaker 5: don't know. I shouldn't speak for him, but it's gonna
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: I think it's an interesting dynamic.
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: But it is odd. You know, two people who could
- 1:19:29Speaker 4: lose their job in a new regime are the ones
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: going to be involved in the interviews. So yeah, I
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: don't know that's going to work.
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: Well, I just like I said, I think that there
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: was two different answers to that question. He said specifically
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: that those two guys are going to be here. Yeah,
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: high Smith and Wolf will be here. Prior to that,
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: he said he would leave the personnel decisions to the
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: new coach. So I don't have any other way to
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: extrapolate out of that as just saying that he's not
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: talking about Wolf and high Smith when he's talking about
- 1:20:00Speaker 5: the personnel department. But I don't. I don't know that,
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: you know.
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: And then the other thing is, well, if Wolf and
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: high Smith weren't involved, is it just Robert and Jonathan?
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: I mean, like it's it's a tough situation.
- 1:20:11Speaker 5: I told you Fred Kirk should be there too.
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: I don't know. I don't I don't have time I
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: have to do.
- 1:20:16Speaker 5: I don't do pu You know, Ben, Ben, can you
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: come at too, We'll be done at Hey.
- 1:20:23Speaker 4: You want to have him on the show?
- 1:20:24Speaker 5: Ben? And yeah, yeah, a little yeah.
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: We'll tell a standpoll while you're here. Test Evans here.
- 1:20:32Speaker 7: Hello, there's no song.
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: It's not really bad, which is not there's no practice,
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: I guess, I guess. But where are you back? You're
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: back from the press conference?
- 1:20:43Speaker 3: Press conference? Packed house, very packed house. Yeah, one of
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: the more packed houses I've ever seen, uh, at least
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: in that work.
- 1:20:52Speaker 5: Were they passing microphones around? They were passing my thank goodness,
- 1:20:55Speaker 5: the questions came through crystal clear.
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: Yeah, they were. They were passing microphones. And I thought
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: that his opening statement said at all and I recommend
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: him for falling on the sword a little bit there
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: because I feel like that's how we all feel about
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: this situation. He just wasn't ready and they put him
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: in this position.
- 1:21:12Speaker 5: Put him an unable situation.
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: Yeah, and he said it perfectly. So I thought that,
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: you know, there was some interesting other points from the questions,
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: but that that's the that's the bottom line right.
- 1:21:23Speaker 5: There there, It is right there. You know, I'm looking
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: at my shows. This whole situation is on me. That's
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: how we opened it up. Yeah, couldn't be any more accountable.
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: Yeah, yep. So once you got into the questions and answers,
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: you know, we're still a little bit confused about the
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: personal process and the personnel department and how that's going
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: to work. If a coach comes in and says, I
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: want my own people, is that a deal breaker?
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: I don't know. It definitely sounds like Elliott Wolfe will
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: be back. He said he's staying on, so in some
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: capacity he will be back, and he's going to be
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: involved in the in the interview, so I would think
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: that for right now he's their personnel guy. And moving forward. Now,
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: the question that I have, especially if it's an experienced coach,
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: you know Mike Rabel, for instance, would you then give
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: that coach control of the roster? Right, So, maybe Elliott's
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: picking the players, but when we get down to brass
- 1:22:23Speaker 3: tax and training camp, the fifty three is up to
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: that coach. Now, you probably wouldn't do that with a
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: first time head coach, but maybe somebody that you felt
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: was comfortable in that role, uh doing that moving forward
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: to maybe pivot that away from Elliot alone.
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not uncommon in this situation for a personnel
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: staff to stay on until after the draft and then
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: the new regime makes this decision about gutting it or right,
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: because there's a lot of work that's already been done
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: to get ready for the draft and free agency that
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: you know, you don't want to just throw it out
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: the window.
- 1:23:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean all the live scouting has already been
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: done obviously all these college teams for the most part,
- 1:23:05Speaker 3: unless you're in the playoff or are done with their season,
- 1:23:07Speaker 3: So all the in person exposures, that's all already. The
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: hey is already in the barn there, so a lot
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: of that type of stuff is already graded out.
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: Yeah, portant, and I you know, it's it's fair to
- 1:23:19Speaker 4: wonder like, well, if a regime, no, if a personnel
- 1:23:22Speaker 4: department knows they're just going to get scanned once the
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: draft is over, what's their motivation for you know, doing
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: a good job. But it's their livelihood and it's their reputation,
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: So they're not gonna half asset. They want the team
- 1:23:37Speaker 4: to have a good draft because because I was involved,
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: it would look well right, right, So there is motivation
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: for you even if you think that you're gonna lose
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: your job after the draft to still do your best
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: up until that point.
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought it was telling. Towards the very end
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: he mentioned the quarterbacks and as much as we can
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: get on Elliott Wolf for the rest of his off
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: season last year, when you hit on the quarterback, it
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: usually you get some time to fill out the roster
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: around the quarterback. You don't normally see a personnel guy
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: that drafts a franchise quarterback in Drake May and then
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: gets one and done immediately after that. I would agree
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: you tend to see that kind of come to fruition
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: a little bit and let's see what he can build
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: around it. And then he made the joke, but I
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: think he was kind of half seerious about Joe Milton.
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: You know, any we have two Yeah, you know how
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: how well he played yesterday and that being an asset
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: as well. So if you give this coaching story, this
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: front office essentially two quarterbacks one and a half. Let's
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: call it with Milton.
- 1:24:40Speaker 5: But if he could be your backup, there's value to
- 1:24:42Speaker 5: that because it's a cheap backup and you don't have
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: to spend you know, five ten million on you know,
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: Jacobe Brissett and you know, we we probably won't find
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: that out until like OTA's mini camp ish, but I
- 1:24:55Speaker 5: wouldn't I wouldn't expect them to sign a veteran backup
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: until then because they're going to assume that he's the backup.
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: And I think that is a good asset to have,
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: given the second rep extra but it gives you some
- 1:25:08Speaker 5: extra money to play with it that other teams don't
- 1:25:11Speaker 5: have that luxury.
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: In the interview that I guess Henry McKenna did with Wolf,
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: one of the quotes that stood out to me was
- 1:25:18Speaker 4: Wolf said we expected more internal development for the players,
- 1:25:27Speaker 4: And to me, that was, like, that's just throwing all
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: the assistant coaches under the bus. And so I don't
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: know if you took it the same way.
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a it's a fair point, and you certainly
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: can look at guys from these last couple of draft classes.
- 1:25:40Speaker 3: I think Keon White's a perfect example, Like they probably
- 1:25:43Speaker 3: thought from a front office, you know, perspective, that Keon
- 1:25:47Speaker 3: White was going to emerge this year as a real
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: impact player for them, and he went backwards. So you
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: look at that type of thing, you know, just all
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: throughout the roster. I mean, we've talked about all the
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: guys that they've brought back on extensions that have regressed,
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: you know, from this year to last year. So all
- 1:26:03Speaker 3: that is I guess fair. I mean, you know, we'll
- 1:26:06Speaker 3: see if a different coaching staff can get it out
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: of those players, and we'll and then we can kind
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: of that's.
- 1:26:12Speaker 5: A great point on the development part. We keep talking
- 1:26:15Speaker 5: about draft and development and you mentioned, you know, they
- 1:26:18Speaker 5: thought that Polk was a plug and play kind of player.
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: That's an element of it that I think hasn't been
- 1:26:24Speaker 5: talked about as much. Is all of those guys that
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: they resigned seems like they were better players before. So
- 1:26:32Speaker 5: that's like a lack of development too. And you want
- 1:26:34Speaker 5: to say that maybe there was a shot being taken
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: at the coaches, Maybe it's rightly.
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: So yeah, So I mean job one once you get
- 1:26:43Speaker 4: that head coach in here is what's his staff? Who
- 1:26:46Speaker 4: were you getting in here to develop players? You know?
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: So the better the network that coach coming in has,
- 1:26:55Speaker 4: the better off you're going to be, because what are
- 1:26:57Speaker 4: you gonna have a whole round of interviews for a
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: whole staff of coaches. I mean, by the time we're finished,
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: it'll be twenty twenty five season.
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: I mean, that's what we did last year, I know.
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: And that was really what stood out to me in
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: the very beginning with Girodd was just how little connections
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: he had to build a staff, right, And so a
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: lot of these guys Rabel Ben Johnson, like these coaches
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: are going to come with a plan. This is gonna
- 1:27:21Speaker 3: be my OC, this is gonna be my DC. You know,
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: we'll fill in the position coaches maybe as we go
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: a little bit, but they're going to have guys that
- 1:27:29Speaker 3: are gonna come with them to these destinations that they're
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: interviewing for. And it always felt like they were flying
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: by the seat of their pants a little bit with
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: the coaching staff.
- 1:27:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think you're gonna have to have twelve
- 1:27:39Speaker 5: interviews for an offensive coordinator, right. I think that it's
- 1:27:43Speaker 5: reasonable to expect both of those guys that Evan just
- 1:27:46Speaker 5: mentioned will have guys in mind for at least the
- 1:27:49Speaker 5: coordinator rules. Now, maybe you've got to fill out your
- 1:27:51Speaker 5: staff because I don't know if Ben Johnson has fifteen
- 1:27:55Speaker 5: guys that are at the ready if he gets a job,
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: But I'm sure he's thought about it. He's been a
- 1:28:00Speaker 5: hot commodity for.
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: A couple of years, comes in here, I want him
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: to be the coordinator offensive.
- 1:28:05Speaker 5: Well, yeah, but he'll still need an offensive coordinator.
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: No, you know, you.
- 1:28:08Speaker 3: Still need a staff.
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: You need a staff, but you.
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: Don't you still need an offensive coordinator. Like someone's got
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: to be the offensive doesn't.
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: Yeah, he has an offensive but he's the guy that
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: calls the plays.
- 1:28:19Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I know, but you still need an offensive
- 1:28:21Speaker 5: coordinat a guy.
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: You need a guy to help you coordinate the offense,
- 1:28:26Speaker 4: but he can still be the OC. I don't know
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: what that's going on.
- 1:28:33Speaker 5: Can I go to something that's something that's always kind
- 1:28:37Speaker 5: of like baffled me, the whole personnel thing, and you know,
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: all the work has been done in the draft and
- 1:28:43Speaker 5: blah blah blah, And I agree with you, like there's
- 1:28:45Speaker 5: a lot in it for the guys that are picking
- 1:28:48Speaker 5: players to do it well because they want their next
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: job if they're going out the door. Let's go back
- 1:28:55Speaker 5: to what Robert Craft said. You know that the new
- 1:28:57Speaker 5: coach is obviously going to have a big say in
- 1:28:59Speaker 5: the personnel department, you know, like, so let's just say
- 1:29:03Speaker 5: that Ben Johnson has you know, whoever the assistant is
- 1:29:06Speaker 5: in Detroit. He loves that's going to be his GM.
- 1:29:10Speaker 5: Hasn't he done a lot of work on the draft too, right, Like,
- 1:29:14Speaker 5: you don't have to keep the existing personnel department because
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: they've done all the work.
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: You don't have to.
- 1:29:18Speaker 5: And I understand that, you know, a team might have
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: a different grading system and maybe different needs players and
- 1:29:24Speaker 5: needs that they want. But you're your person. Your scouts
- 1:29:28Speaker 5: are scouting the entirety of the draft, all the players
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: that are available. Right, So I'm going to guess that
- 1:29:34Speaker 5: Mike Rabel or Ben Johnson, whoever else is going to
- 1:29:37Speaker 5: come in and be the next coach, isn't going to
- 1:29:39Speaker 5: hire someone who who has Paul Perillo, who hasn't looked
- 1:29:43Speaker 5: at one draft prospect Scataboo. I mean this Scataboo kid.
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: I want him in round four. Like, whoever gets hired
- 1:29:52Speaker 5: as the new guy has done all the work.
- 1:29:55Speaker 7: It's your question. You know that what looked like what
- 1:29:56Speaker 7: am out of the scouting information is like proprietary and
- 1:29:59Speaker 7: can you take from your current team? You know, like
- 1:30:01Speaker 7: I'm sure he studied them, but like is he allowed
- 1:30:03Speaker 7: to take his files with him to the new team?
- 1:30:05Speaker 7: Like you know, those kind of things.
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: I will say, stacking and great and whatnot. But like
- 1:30:10Speaker 5: you have the knowledge.
- 1:30:11Speaker 4: Of your knowledge, you know. But I'm almost certain that
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: all the files, all the database information, everything you've done
- 1:30:19Speaker 4: is property of the New England Patriots.
- 1:30:21Speaker 5: I agree with that, But I think that you have
- 1:30:23Speaker 5: the actual information.
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: Oh yeah, you know what you've done, you know your opinions.
- 1:30:27Speaker 5: You know, like in terms of grating and stacking. Again,
- 1:30:31Speaker 5: like the Patriots might say, well, we're really heavy on
- 1:30:34Speaker 5: offensive linemen, and we're really heavy on on wide receivers,
- 1:30:37Speaker 5: whereas Detroit might not be as heavy on those, especially
- 1:30:40Speaker 5: offensive line You've got a great one. So maybe they're
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: they're focusing on different areas. But the breadth of knowledge
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: of the draft, I think is especially.
- 1:30:49Speaker 7: For the guy whose system it is. He knows specifically
- 1:30:51Speaker 7: kind of what he wants, the traits that he's looking for,
- 1:30:53Speaker 7: and you know, here might have been different, and the
- 1:30:55Speaker 7: breakdowns and the scouting the traits that they're looking for
- 1:30:57Speaker 7: might be completely different than you know they maybe Ben
- 1:31:00Speaker 7: Johnson wants fast wide receivers you know.
- 1:31:02Speaker 3: Oh really those exist?
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: I would receivers got a draft fast guy.
- 1:31:08Speaker 3: Yes, that is why it is tempting a little bit
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: to to maybe turn some of this stuff over to
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: the new head coach in terms of picking the groceries, Like,
- 1:31:17Speaker 3: I don't need to go all like the full Belichick
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: model where it's just one guy doing everything, but I
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: do wonder you know how much they're gonna Elliott Wolf
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: and his staff that's currently here bend a little bit
- 1:31:29Speaker 3: to the Mike Rabel type of player, the Ben Johnson
- 1:31:32Speaker 3: type of player, whoever it ends up being, because you
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: know that we've talked about this like that, that could
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: be significantly different from a Belichick type of player.
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: If I'm a guy who wants to run the place,
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: I say to them, listen, I'm okay if you keep
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: these people. But at the end of the day, it's
- 1:31:47Speaker 4: my call. I will listen to them, I will take
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: their input, I will value their input, and I will
- 1:31:53Speaker 4: respect the work that they've done. But if it comes
- 1:31:57Speaker 4: down to my way or my decision or their decision,
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: it's going to be my decision. And as long as
- 1:32:04Speaker 4: I get that agreement from the ownership, then I'm okay.
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: I'm okay with keeping the current staff. I'm just you know,
- 1:32:13Speaker 4: speaking out loud. Now. I've also heard that Ben Johnson
- 1:32:16Speaker 4: has already put out there that one of the main
- 1:32:19Speaker 4: things he's looking for is alignment with ownership. Yeah, skipping
- 1:32:24Speaker 4: over right to ownership. Alignment with ownership, that ownership and
- 1:32:29Speaker 4: myself are aligned. So I don't know if that's a
- 1:32:33Speaker 4: shot across the bow about I need to have complete say,
- 1:32:38Speaker 4: you know, yeah, below the ownership level.
- 1:32:42Speaker 7: Also, i'd also just like focus a little bit on
- 1:32:44Speaker 7: the defensive side of the ball too. I mean, we're
- 1:32:46Speaker 7: you know, talking so much about scheme and you know,
- 1:32:48Speaker 7: on the offensive side of the ball, and you just
- 1:32:50Speaker 7: you wonder what a new head coach is gonna look
- 1:32:52Speaker 7: at this defense and think, you know, it's not like
- 1:32:55Speaker 7: a core defense has kind of existed there. It's you know,
- 1:32:58Speaker 7: it's kind of a bag of parts right now. I
- 1:32:59Speaker 7: would almost say, certainly like some corners that can play man,
- 1:33:03Speaker 7: and I think that's a great place to start from.
- 1:33:05Speaker 7: But I also wonder coach comes in Rabel, like he
- 1:33:07Speaker 7: looks at this defense, does he get away from all,
- 1:33:10Speaker 7: you know, what Belichick likes to do with game plan stuff.
- 1:33:12Speaker 7: Does he go back to just a base kind of
- 1:33:14Speaker 7: scheme that they're gonna play and they're gonna try to
- 1:33:16Speaker 7: play fast I think that that side of the ball
- 1:33:19Speaker 7: is just as much up in the airs as the offense.
- 1:33:20Speaker 23: You know.
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: I just wonder, you know, because so far Ben Johnson
- 1:33:23Speaker 4: and Rabel are the two names he's getting bandied about.
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: Of the two, Rabel, even though he's been at Cleveland,
- 1:33:32Speaker 4: might have had the most time to evaluate our roster, sure,
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: you know, and might come in on day one with
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: a excuse me, a better idea. I wolfed down a
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: turkey sandwich.
- 1:33:42Speaker 7: But we had to sit through that game last year
- 1:33:44Speaker 7: when he got inducted, right, so he like just sat
- 1:33:46Speaker 7: and watched the game.
- 1:33:46Speaker 4: You know, he's might have the better idea in day
- 1:33:49Speaker 4: one about what he thinks this roster needs.
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's definitely possible. I just remember last year
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: when we went to the Senior Bowl. Vrabel was at
- 1:33:58Speaker 3: the Senior Bowl without a job, and he was just
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: there networking, yeah, and just talking to people. And I
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: just feel like that year that he's had in Cleveland,
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: I heard a lot that he was learning offense and
- 1:34:13Speaker 3: like really under Kevin Stefanski's wing and trying to learn
- 1:34:16Speaker 3: the other side of the ball to better coach offense
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: moving forward. And and you know, when you go down
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: to things like the Senior Bowl to combine. When you're
- 1:34:23Speaker 3: a free agent and you're going there, you're going there
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: to build connections, like you're going there to network. So
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: I think the tempting thing, and I know he didn't
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: necessarily directly say this, but I think the tempting thing
- 1:34:35Speaker 3: for the Crafts has got to be that there's a
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: turnkey option out there in Mike Rabel where he is
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: going to come with a plan, like he's gonna come
- 1:34:45Speaker 3: fully loaded with the staff, with a plan, with a
- 1:34:48Speaker 3: program of like how we're gonna lay this out and
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: how this is gonna go. And there just never felt
- 1:34:53Speaker 3: like there was a plan for Girod. It never felt like.
- 1:34:56Speaker 4: It was everything seat of the pants.
- 1:34:58Speaker 3: Yeah, it just was all none of it just felt
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: he never felt in control of the job. And I
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: feel like that is a lot of why we're here.
- 1:35:06Speaker 7: I had one thing to what you just said, though, Fred,
- 1:35:08Speaker 7: I'd add that there might have been a little bit
- 1:35:09Speaker 7: too much attention in getting away from big bad Bill
- 1:35:12Speaker 7: Belichick and doing things opposite of what he did, or
- 1:35:15Speaker 7: you know, specifically being motivated to get away from what
- 1:35:18Speaker 7: he did, even if it necessarily wasn't what we're doing
- 1:35:21Speaker 7: to help the football team. I just I mean, I
- 1:35:23Speaker 7: compared it to Cam Newton last year. Kim Newton replaced
- 1:35:26Speaker 7: Brady for a year. It was kind of a weird year.
- 1:35:27Speaker 7: It's kind of what's happened with Gerrod and Belichick. But
- 1:35:30Speaker 7: I think to some extent, maybe that stuff has been
- 1:35:32Speaker 7: kind of flushed away and the new guy's gonna come
- 1:35:35Speaker 7: in here without the shadow of Bill Belichick's hoody, you know,
- 1:35:38Speaker 7: looming over everything how it was done last year, X
- 1:35:41Speaker 7: y Z. He can come in a little bit more
- 1:35:43Speaker 7: with a blank slate, kind of like Mac Jones got.
- 1:35:45Speaker 7: It wasn't like Max got to replace Tom Brady. You know,
- 1:35:47Speaker 7: they took some of that out of the way with
- 1:35:49Speaker 7: that Cam Newton.
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: You just to the side. Is Rabel's son on a
- 1:35:52Speaker 4: team these days? I thought he put up with an NFL.
- 1:35:58Speaker 4: I think it's hey, I think I heard his name
- 1:36:02Speaker 4: on a broadcast at some point. B kid, Right, Yeah,
- 1:36:08Speaker 4: all right, let's go to the TPX hotline. We'll start
- 1:36:11Speaker 4: with Kelvin in Florida. What's up, Kelvin. Kelvin, Uh, he's
- 1:36:19Speaker 4: not there, all right.
- 1:36:20Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:36:20Speaker 4: We'll go back to Japan, where Jason is giving it
- 1:36:23Speaker 4: another shot. What's up, Jason?
- 1:36:25Speaker 5: He is not.
- 1:36:26Speaker 28: Hey, how's it going, guys. I'm not actually in Japan anymore,
- 1:36:29Speaker 28: but you guys know me from that era.
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: I remembered, all right, well where are you now, Jason?
- 1:36:34Speaker 28: I keen my hometown Newmpshire, Hampshire.
- 1:36:41Speaker 4: Do you know a fun fact?
- 1:36:43Speaker 18: Uh?
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: He knew the main street Hampshire is the widest main
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: street in America? Did you know that fun fact?
- 1:36:51Speaker 5: Just a fun fact behind Paris in America?
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: Right, yeah, yeah, okay.
- 1:36:57Speaker 28: Second in the world. Behind Paris though.
- 1:36:59Speaker 5: Second in the world.
- 1:37:00Speaker 4: That fun fact. They don't have the art.
- 1:37:06Speaker 15: I just don't.
- 1:37:08Speaker 28: So it's a it's an odd thing where I see
- 1:37:12Speaker 28: how we were doing this year, and you know, it
- 1:37:15Speaker 28: was terrible. I hated the results. I also kind of
- 1:37:19Speaker 28: don't want to be this team where we're just turning
- 1:37:23Speaker 28: through things and I I you know, I listened to
- 1:37:27Speaker 28: the Robert Kraft press conference there. He sounds really sincere.
- 1:37:31Speaker 28: He obviously loves your odd at no boy, the belief
- 1:37:40Speaker 28: in decision that they made.
- 1:37:44Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:37:44Speaker 4: Unfortunately, Yeah, so I think I'll coverage.
- 1:37:48Speaker 5: I got an idea of what Jason's talking about, Like
- 1:37:50Speaker 5: he's talking about you know understanding the move had to
- 1:37:54Speaker 5: be made or what that was made, but doesn't want
- 1:37:56Speaker 5: to be one of these teams. And I hear this
- 1:37:58Speaker 5: a lot. Who does right, But I hear this a lot,
- 1:38:01Speaker 5: like you don't want to start cycling through coaches because
- 1:38:04Speaker 5: then you become one of these teams. Well this is
- 1:38:07Speaker 5: like a sad and sorry reality. But you're one of
- 1:38:11Speaker 5: those teams, Like I believe they're sixteen and thirty five
- 1:38:17Speaker 5: in their last forty one or whatever fifty whatever mini
- 1:38:20Speaker 5: games that is mathis tough, fifty one games. They haven't
- 1:38:25Speaker 5: been successful in a long time, Like you have to
- 1:38:29Speaker 5: go back to twenty one for their last winning season.
- 1:38:33Speaker 5: So you don't have to be one of those teams
- 1:38:36Speaker 5: quote unquote that cycles through coaches every year. But does
- 1:38:39Speaker 5: that make you feel better if you go four and
- 1:38:41Speaker 5: thirteen and back to back years but you keep the
- 1:38:42Speaker 5: same coach, because it doesn't make most fans fail any better.
- 1:38:46Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: I also feel like this is to avoid becoming one
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: of those teams. Habitually, that's what you're trying to do
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: because I feel like mister Kraft knew we were probably
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: going to be right in this position again next year,
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: or similarly, in this spot next year. And so if
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: we didn't make this move now, we're just going to
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: be making it twelve months from now.
- 1:39:05Speaker 4: You need to fail fast, You're right, and you need yeah, exactly.
- 1:39:08Speaker 5: And it wouldn't make me feel any better to go
- 1:39:11Speaker 5: eight and nine, four and thirteen, four and thirteen if
- 1:39:14Speaker 5: I had the same coach in those three years, or
- 1:39:16Speaker 5: I made a coaching change and then it didn't you know,
- 1:39:20Speaker 5: like to Evans point, you go four and thirteen in
- 1:39:22Speaker 5: year one and then maybe you go five and twelve
- 1:39:23Speaker 5: the next year. I don't better about it because I
- 1:39:26Speaker 5: didn't fire the coach after one year.
- 1:39:27Speaker 7: It still just speaks though specifically Jirob where there wasn't like, well,
- 1:39:32Speaker 7: yeah he had a bad year, but we've seen him
- 1:39:33Speaker 7: do it before, Like you know, he's got to get
- 1:39:35Speaker 7: a year to get what he's done in the past
- 1:39:37Speaker 7: and place.
- 1:39:37Speaker 5: And that's why still at the time that he got right,
- 1:39:40Speaker 5: it just like what's the what's the move, Like what's
- 1:39:43Speaker 5: the pivot?
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: So if you keep Girod and you fire Avp, so
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: who's the the OC that's gonna magically come here and
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: fix it? All that you know has a relationship with
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: this regime because Van Pelt was twelve out of twelve,
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: right like he was. They had a long list of
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: interviews that they tried to get through last year to
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: get somebody to take the job. I guess it's a
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: little bit more appealing now, But you know, all you
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: were going to be doing was rearranging the deck chairs.
- 1:40:07Speaker 5: And if you kept Mayo. So now you are conducting
- 1:40:10Speaker 5: the offensive coordinator interviews again if you get rid of
- 1:40:13Speaker 5: a VP, and you it might even be harder to
- 1:40:17Speaker 5: feel that job than it was last year because now
- 1:40:20Speaker 5: you just went four and thirteen with the new coach.
- 1:40:24Speaker 5: Seems like the the seat was really hot for that
- 1:40:26Speaker 5: new coach. And I don't know, I don't know how
- 1:40:30Speaker 5: much better I could have done an Alex van Pelt
- 1:40:32Speaker 5: with a rookie quarterback and no offensive line and they
- 1:40:34Speaker 5: got rid of him. Why do I want to go there?
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:40:38Speaker 5: Yeah, that'd be an even harder job maybe to fill
- 1:40:40Speaker 5: if you would if you had kept may.
- 1:40:42Speaker 3: Yeah, like if your Josh McCown and your star is rising,
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: you know, why would you take the Patriots OC John
- 1:40:48Speaker 3: Duck and have it blow up in your face in
- 1:40:50Speaker 3: the year.
- 1:40:51Speaker 4: At least you know you can start Drake May in
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: week one, you won't have any issues there or you.
- 1:40:56Speaker 7: Might think that could be the head coach of this
- 1:40:58Speaker 7: team by October.
- 1:40:58Speaker 12: So that was.
- 1:41:00Speaker 5: The argument I made to that on Felger and Mas
- 1:41:03Speaker 5: that was on my shows. They said all that same
- 1:41:06Speaker 5: stuff that I just said, and that was my comeback.
- 1:41:08Speaker 5: I go, well, you know, I don't know if you
- 1:41:10Speaker 5: if you have a lot of confidence in yourself, maybe
- 1:41:12Speaker 5: you can angle to be the successor.
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: Right Joel Andatawa writes in that podcasts at Patriots dot com,
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: and We've got a ton of emails and want to
- 1:41:20Speaker 4: thank everyone for sending him in. I'm all for a
- 1:41:23Speaker 4: clean sweep and letting the new head coach pick all
- 1:41:25Speaker 4: new staff. I think we learned the hard way. Experience
- 1:41:28Speaker 4: is very important, especially when you don't have a niche
- 1:41:32Speaker 4: i e. Offensive or defensive guru type. It should be
- 1:41:36Speaker 4: e g. By the way, not I E. I'm all
- 1:41:39Speaker 4: for Rabel, but also think I'm biased because of his
- 1:41:42Speaker 4: Patriots connection to me. The OC and d C might
- 1:41:45Speaker 4: actually be the most important hires. He could be right there.
- 1:41:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the number one question for Rabel is
- 1:41:51Speaker 3: who's your OC? And the number one question for Ben
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: Johnson's who your DC is. You know, if they're not
- 1:41:56Speaker 3: your area of expertise, you know who you're gonna fill
- 1:41:59Speaker 3: in with. Rabel I Just you wonder, you know, how
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: do you get at OC hired that's gonna be truly
- 1:42:05Speaker 3: innovative and truly bring this offense up to date and
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: not run the old Patriots offense with Josh McDaniels or
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: this Cleveland offense that Van Pelt ran. And then for
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: Ben Johnson, you need somebody, you know, we've been kicking
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: around the name, you know, Wade Phillips, Like for Sean McVay,
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: like who is the experience been there for one hundred years,
- 1:42:25Speaker 3: called plays, maybe even was a head coach at one
- 1:42:27Speaker 3: point that can run the defense and really be the
- 1:42:30Speaker 3: head coach of the defense.
- 1:42:32Speaker 5: I think yeah, And I think just having especially if
- 1:42:36Speaker 5: it's like a Ben Johnson, you know, first time guy,
- 1:42:38Speaker 5: having an experienced guy regardless of the side of the
- 1:42:41Speaker 5: ball like McDonald and Seattle is the youngest guy, right,
- 1:42:45Speaker 5: he's the youngest coach and he has Leslie Frasier on
- 1:42:48Speaker 5: his staff just to you know, and I know the
- 1:42:50Speaker 5: Patriots try to do that. I think with Ben McAdoo,
- 1:42:53Speaker 5: but I don't think it's really played out that way.
- 1:42:57Speaker 5: So I do think it's important if you have a
- 1:42:59Speaker 5: lack of experience to not only have the coordinator on
- 1:43:02Speaker 5: the other side, which we talked about a lot, but
- 1:43:05Speaker 5: sort of an experienced maybe former head coach, just to
- 1:43:09Speaker 5: help be a sounding board.
- 1:43:10Speaker 7: Just something that popped into my head. Are you a
- 1:43:12Speaker 7: little worried with Christian Gonzalez if a DC comes in
- 1:43:15Speaker 7: here and it is like, I want to play zone.
- 1:43:17Speaker 7: I want to do a lot of zone. We're gonna
- 1:43:18Speaker 7: be a zone team, now, you know? Is that a
- 1:43:20Speaker 7: little bit of a red flag where you're like, we
- 1:43:21Speaker 7: got a great man cover corner, Like you know what
- 1:43:23Speaker 7: I mean.
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: I mean, he can't be that good if he doesn't
- 1:43:26Speaker 4: understand that you got a guy like Gonzales, you put
- 1:43:28Speaker 4: a man on man.
- 1:43:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's it's a thought I've had about
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: Robert Sala, who I like as a coach, and I
- 1:43:35Speaker 3: know a lot of people have thrown his name out
- 1:43:37Speaker 3: there for DC.
- 1:43:38Speaker 4: But is he a Tampa two guy.
- 1:43:40Speaker 3: No, he's a Seattle three guy.
- 1:43:42Speaker 5: Seattle.
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: He's gonna know your numbers, He's gonna come in four,
- 1:43:47Speaker 3: He's gonna run cover three, he's gonna run quarters. They're
- 1:43:49Speaker 3: not gonna blitz much. They're gonna rush four. Like, so
- 1:43:52Speaker 3: you're putting in a defensive system. You know, who's your
- 1:43:55Speaker 3: Fred Warner on this ross, who's your front four that's
- 1:43:57Speaker 3: gonna gets right exactly. So if you're running that kind
- 1:44:00Speaker 3: of system, like you don't have the horses for that
- 1:44:02Speaker 3: kind of system. We don't know, it's honest point like
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: Fred Warner, Like you watch one Bentley, you know, covering
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: the seam and in cover three like good luck. Yeah, right,
- 1:44:13Speaker 3: So there's a lot that goes into it.
- 1:44:16Speaker 5: To me, I would like to see him try to
- 1:44:18Speaker 5: do that role. By the way, I'm not telling you that,
- 1:44:20Speaker 5: knowing that police do not attack next not saying that,
- 1:44:27Speaker 5: But I do want to see safety in college. I
- 1:44:30Speaker 5: think he's another safety.
- 1:44:32Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:44:33Speaker 5: If he could be sort of an athletic linebacker that
- 1:44:37Speaker 5: could perform in those kinds of roles on.
- 1:44:40Speaker 3: The table for that for two years, Jeremiah writes.
- 1:44:42Speaker 4: He says, curious if you saw Booty's tweet after Gerard
- 1:44:46Speaker 4: was announced to be fired. Booty tweeted, God bless after
- 1:44:50Speaker 4: the news broke, Just curious on you all thought about
- 1:44:52Speaker 4: what Booty said, and was there ever some indication that
- 1:44:55Speaker 4: players weren't a fan of Mail. Now, I didn't see
- 1:44:58Speaker 4: the tweet, but God Blessed could be like God bless That's.
- 1:45:02Speaker 5: How I would take that. I did not see it.
- 1:45:03Speaker 5: I don't.
- 1:45:04Speaker 4: Yeah, so I don't know what the content or the
- 1:45:06Speaker 4: tenor That's how my.
- 1:45:08Speaker 5: I immediate reaction would be that I think that was
- 1:45:10Speaker 5: a supportive message for Jerid Mayo, But I don't know.
- 1:45:13Speaker 5: Maybe maybe Booty does not like Jid Mail. I have
- 1:45:16Speaker 5: no idea.
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: The last thing I want to do right now is
- 1:45:18Speaker 3: read in between the lines of social media players.
- 1:45:22Speaker 7: Can I ask you what your impression in the locker
- 1:45:24Speaker 7: room was. I know you were in the too with me.
- 1:45:25Speaker 7: I said it was kind of morose.
- 1:45:27Speaker 3: And yeah, I guess. I don't know. Maybe I had
- 1:45:29Speaker 3: a different because you said that, and the girl said
- 1:45:31Speaker 3: that to me too after we walked out of there,
- 1:45:33Speaker 3: that they thought it was kind of I've never been
- 1:45:37Speaker 3: in a locker room clean out where it was an
- 1:45:39Speaker 3: exciting day. I've never seen it besides after winning a
- 1:45:43Speaker 3: super Bowl in twenty nineteen, but in a true season end,
- 1:45:48Speaker 3: like you know, plane crash. I have never seen the
- 1:45:51Speaker 3: locker room the day after the season ends, in locker
- 1:45:54Speaker 3: room clean out day be a happy place. Ever, so
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: I thought it was pretty pretty much the same. Like,
- 1:46:01Speaker 3: I didn't really feel like it was any different than
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: any other year in that respect. And maybe that was
- 1:46:05Speaker 3: just a bad read that I had on it, But
- 1:46:08Speaker 3: I don't know what people expect on a day where
- 1:46:12Speaker 3: the coach was fired and they went four and thirteen
- 1:46:15Speaker 3: and they are coming off this disaster season, Like are
- 1:46:18Speaker 3: they supposed to be doing cartwheels like I you know,
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: So that was just sort of my read on it.
- 1:46:23Speaker 3: Every single locker room clean out that I have ever
- 1:46:25Speaker 3: been in, again, besides my first year when they won
- 1:46:28Speaker 3: the Super Bowl, has been like this. Just everyone's kind
- 1:46:31Speaker 3: of aware of the vibe, like it's not supposed to
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: be a celebration.
- 1:46:35Speaker 7: Did anybody other than Brian Belichick any of the coaches?
- 1:46:38Speaker 7: I saw Brian walk through. That was just one other.
- 1:46:39Speaker 3: Yeah, Brian walked through. I didn't see any of the
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: other coaches, but yeah, I did see Brian. And you know,
- 1:46:45Speaker 3: obviously I don't know if you guys have touched on it,
- 1:46:47Speaker 3: but Drake was not in there and did not speak,
- 1:46:49Speaker 3: And I don't think he's planning on speaking. So we
- 1:46:52Speaker 3: also didn't talk to him after the game yesterday either.
- 1:46:55Speaker 3: He barely played, but so we haven't heard anything from
- 1:46:58Speaker 3: Drake May and what his whole take is on this.
- 1:47:02Speaker 3: Not some some scribes Fred that were not happy about that.
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: I'll tell you that.
- 1:47:06Speaker 4: Yeah, good for him. He doesn't have to talk if
- 1:47:09Speaker 4: he doesn't want to or if he doesn't have to.
- 1:47:12Speaker 5: Sure, Yeah, I would be disappointed if I were a
- 1:47:15Speaker 5: beat writer. Yeah, I want to hear from the quarterback.
- 1:47:17Speaker 4: You do, but and I get it, and I would
- 1:47:20Speaker 4: be disappointed too. But as a first year player a
- 1:47:23Speaker 4: situation like that, I don't know what to say, Like,
- 1:47:27Speaker 4: what do you say? And if I can get out
- 1:47:29Speaker 4: of talking.
- 1:47:30Speaker 5: An unfortunate situation, We're all disappointed. You feel like we
- 1:47:34Speaker 5: didn't play well enough for him, and then we take responsibility.
- 1:47:37Speaker 4: Yeah, Bill wrights In, I've heard this argument that it's
- 1:47:42Speaker 4: common for the personal department to stay on in situations
- 1:47:46Speaker 4: like this because all the work has already been done.
- 1:47:48Speaker 4: Robert just said the drafts have been bad. We all
- 1:47:51Speaker 4: know the drafts have been bad, So why in the
- 1:47:53Speaker 4: world would keeping the same group of people who have
- 1:47:56Speaker 4: made these decisions make any sense whatsoever. I don't want
- 1:48:00Speaker 4: these guys touching this draft, not even sniff the person
- 1:48:04Speaker 4: the new head coach would want to bring in would,
- 1:48:06Speaker 4: in theory, also have been doing the work on this
- 1:48:09Speaker 4: draft class, Paul, that's your point, and have a group
- 1:48:11Speaker 4: of scouts with him that have also been doing work
- 1:48:14Speaker 4: on this draft. The personal department is a major issue here,
- 1:48:18Speaker 4: and allowing them to make decisions on another draft is
- 1:48:22Speaker 4: just inconceivable to me.
- 1:48:24Speaker 3: Okay, let's calm down. But I understand that why why
- 1:48:26Speaker 3: why should he calm down? But I just think that
- 1:48:28Speaker 3: that's a little dramatic, is all. I just okay, But
- 1:48:31Speaker 3: I'm with him, like I understand that that people are are,
- 1:48:36Speaker 3: you know, worried about the personnel department, that they don't
- 1:48:39Speaker 3: see the path forward. And I don't necessarily disagree in
- 1:48:42Speaker 3: a lot of ways based off of last year, but
- 1:48:44Speaker 3: I would also just say that it was one year,
- 1:48:47Speaker 3: and I don't know if I really can come here
- 1:48:52Speaker 3: and say that I disagreed with all the approach that
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: they had in last year's draft. Now did it work out?
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: Was it a home run? No? But they hit the
- 1:49:00Speaker 3: positions that we all were clamoring for them to hit.
- 1:49:03Speaker 3: They took the guys that they evaluated and thought were
- 1:49:06Speaker 3: the right guys to take. They hit what I think
- 1:49:09Speaker 3: is a home run at quarterback at three overall, and
- 1:49:12Speaker 3: let's give it, you know right now, I'm going.
- 1:49:14Speaker 5: To get two ones back when you trade him now
- 1:49:16Speaker 5: and keep hand over the reins to Milton. The rest
- 1:49:19Speaker 5: of the draft and free agency is looking bleak.
- 1:49:21Speaker 3: I'm not I'm not trying to defend them too much,
- 1:49:24Speaker 3: but I just think that is a little bit over
- 1:49:26Speaker 3: the time.
- 1:49:27Speaker 7: I just thought I just highlight too Robert saying they
- 1:49:29Speaker 7: changed the scouting methodology last year, they rejiggered some of
- 1:49:33Speaker 7: the order, like I'm all board with this, Like I mean,
- 1:49:36Speaker 7: and I think that goes to the great unknown and
- 1:49:37Speaker 7: you've said him any time, Fred of like who was
- 1:49:39Speaker 7: making the picks? How much input did Elliott Wolf and Mac?
- 1:49:42Speaker 7: Like what was we don't know what that whole thing was,
- 1:49:44Speaker 7: Like how the draft was running.
- 1:49:45Speaker 4: Were they still working off the old system and.
- 1:49:49Speaker 7: Was or was Bill just coming in at the end
- 1:49:50Speaker 7: being like Nope, nope, this guy, this guy.
- 1:49:52Speaker 4: I don't know, you know, we don't know.
- 1:49:54Speaker 3: I also just think it was going to be a
- 1:49:56Speaker 3: multi year rebuilt from a personal standpoint, there was no
- 1:49:58Speaker 3: way that they were going to come out of last
- 1:50:01Speaker 3: year with a starting left tackle, starting wide receiver, starting quarterback,
- 1:50:05Speaker 3: all across the board. I I just don't think that
- 1:50:08Speaker 3: that's realistic.
- 1:50:08Speaker 7: And they'll probably be questions positive people that call this
- 1:50:11Speaker 7: offseat and say, you get a new coaching staff that
- 1:50:13Speaker 7: we believe in that are good coaches, and all of
- 1:50:15Speaker 7: a sudden, Jalen Polk starts to develop and some of
- 1:50:17Speaker 7: these guys, you know, maybe had disappointing first years.
- 1:50:19Speaker 5: Take from Afar is you know, going back to those
- 1:50:22Speaker 5: things that you're talking about that Elliott Wolf said about
- 1:50:25Speaker 5: the the development. My guess is that they've been able
- 1:50:28Speaker 5: to successfully convince people that this draft wasn't as bad
- 1:50:32Speaker 5: as you think it is. Polk, Robinson, Wallace, They're gonna
- 1:50:37Speaker 5: be good players. We need better coaches.
- 1:50:39Speaker 4: Yeah, develop, that's what it sounded like to him. That's
- 1:50:41Speaker 4: what that sounds like, Jack and and Abba, right sin,
- 1:50:44Speaker 4: He says, message from Detroit, the Patriots do not want
- 1:50:47Speaker 4: to hire Ben Johnson. Nothing to see there is Detroit's
- 1:50:51Speaker 4: high octane offense middle school. Detroit's high octane offense is
- 1:50:55Speaker 4: an illusion. Do not pay attention to the fact that
- 1:50:58Speaker 4: Detroit leads the league and nearly every offensive statistic. Ben
- 1:51:01Speaker 4: Johnson is not your guy. Move along. I don't know
- 1:51:04Speaker 4: if he's being sarcastic.
- 1:51:05Speaker 5: I think I think it's a little bit of isn't
- 1:51:08Speaker 5: Jack the one that used to one of the middle
- 1:51:10Speaker 5: school I don't know that's why I was waiting for
- 1:51:12Speaker 5: it to go that's but if it was, it is funny.
- 1:51:16Speaker 5: There are some people in uh, Michigan that don't like him.
- 1:51:20Speaker 7: What are the middle school theater departments like a record?
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: That's the kind of an insight joke for people who
- 1:51:26Speaker 4: listen to the show all the time. Go back to
- 1:51:28Speaker 4: the TPX hotline. Con is in Minnesota? What's up?
- 1:51:32Speaker 7: Con?
- 1:51:35Speaker 4: Oh, con Minnesota.
- 1:51:38Speaker 7: I think he's waiting for you to yell at.
- 1:51:42Speaker 4: Manataka spend a lot of time in the mall of America. Yeah,
- 1:51:46Speaker 4: let's go to spi and Fresno. What's up? Speed?
- 1:51:50Speaker 14: Hey, what's happening?
- 1:51:51Speaker 4: Hey?
- 1:51:51Speaker 14: Hey, that we're we're one of those team comment that
- 1:51:56Speaker 14: Paul had before really really brought me down. So true.
- 1:52:02Speaker 14: I get why the firings happened, and you know, like
- 1:52:05Speaker 14: many people am critical of the coaches, but I think
- 1:52:08Speaker 14: I'm in the minority who think that this might be
- 1:52:10Speaker 14: a bad decision. You know, I wanted to I wanted
- 1:52:14Speaker 14: to trust Kraft. You know, he seemed really sure about
- 1:52:18Speaker 14: picking Mayo, and you know, and then acknowledging last year
- 1:52:22Speaker 14: that it'll be multiple years. And now all of a sudden,
- 1:52:24Speaker 14: it's like you're you're changing. I wonder if he's unduly
- 1:52:27Speaker 14: affected by the fans, and his press conference he said,
- 1:52:30Speaker 14: I'm a fan, Well, fans affect fans, and I just
- 1:52:32Speaker 14: don't that just doesn't seem I don't know, like a
- 1:52:36Speaker 14: great way to be guided. Maybe why not commit to
- 1:52:39Speaker 14: your experiment.
- 1:52:39Speaker 11: And see if Wolfs can do his f and job
- 1:52:41Speaker 11: and see.
- 1:52:42Speaker 14: If Mayo's regime can get better with a better roster.
- 1:52:45Speaker 14: We just don't know if what's gonna come next is
- 1:52:47Speaker 14: gonna be worse.
- 1:52:49Speaker 3: This professional football man. I just don't think we're in
- 1:52:52Speaker 3: the business of like this isn't like coaching, you we're
- 1:52:55Speaker 3: developing coaches, and we're giving them three years to see
- 1:52:59Speaker 3: if they can finally turn it around. Like they there's
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: a lot on the line here for everybody, Like they
- 1:53:03Speaker 3: got to go out there and put a better product
- 1:53:05Speaker 3: out on the field. I mean, we were at that
- 1:53:07Speaker 3: game yesterday. The stadium's half empty, half of its bills.
- 1:53:10Speaker 3: Fans like, you just can't have that in professional sports.
- 1:53:13Speaker 5: And I would say to speak, it's not necessarily to
- 1:53:17Speaker 5: me about the fans saying you need to fire them. Okay,
- 1:53:20Speaker 5: the fans, I need to fire him. I think the
- 1:53:22Speaker 5: latter part that Evan just talked about, the fans are speaking,
- 1:53:26Speaker 5: are speaking by not showing up. And we've had you know,
- 1:53:30Speaker 5: Fred and I have been looking every week and we
- 1:53:32Speaker 5: talk about the you know that we look down, we
- 1:53:34Speaker 5: look up at that three hundred level and we're up
- 1:53:36Speaker 5: in the box and that stadium has not been banged
- 1:53:39Speaker 5: out this year, and it's got gotten progressively worse. That
- 1:53:44Speaker 5: to me, if I were Robert Craft, that speaks to
- 1:53:46Speaker 5: me people don't want to watch my product anymore because
- 1:53:50Speaker 5: it's not acceptable and I got to find a way
- 1:53:52Speaker 5: to make it more acceptable.
- 1:53:53Speaker 4: And stuff we don't you know, we can see the seats.
- 1:53:57Speaker 4: What we don't know is are there partners corporate? I
- 1:54:02Speaker 4: don't know if I'm going to renew.
- 1:54:04Speaker 5: Oh follow and it's I mean, like if nothing else,
- 1:54:08Speaker 5: it's a business.
- 1:54:09Speaker 4: Yeah, you have to follow the money.
- 1:54:10Speaker 7: What about the lack of primetime games.
- 1:54:13Speaker 4: It's another thing. And someone emailed I'm not going to
- 1:54:17Speaker 4: read the email, but how much did the TV content
- 1:54:21Speaker 4: comments hurt Craft again? You know, alienating the fans in
- 1:54:24Speaker 4: a nuts you.
- 1:54:25Speaker 5: Know, as a singular moment, not at all, but in
- 1:54:29Speaker 5: the season at all, or you know, season full of
- 1:54:31Speaker 5: those kinds of things that that counts.
- 1:54:34Speaker 3: You know. I was thinking about this. I'll ask you, guys,
- 1:54:37Speaker 3: if you just had the football like it was just
- 1:54:40Speaker 3: the record and just the product that was putting on
- 1:54:42Speaker 3: the field, but Gerard handled himself, well.
- 1:54:45Speaker 5: He'd still be the coach.
- 1:54:46Speaker 4: I agree, I think so.
- 1:54:47Speaker 3: I think he'd still be the coach. I just think
- 1:54:49Speaker 3: from burn some cash on, it was just one thing
- 1:54:53Speaker 3: after another after another. Remember in that interview he said
- 1:54:55Speaker 3: that they were going to win more games than they
- 1:54:57Speaker 3: did last year. Right, It just one thing after another
- 1:55:02Speaker 3: after another. I think if he had handled that part
- 1:55:05Speaker 3: of it fine, then he would still be here.
- 1:55:08Speaker 5: Or at least shown progress in that, you know, like
- 1:55:12Speaker 5: some of the missteps and you know, clarifications that he
- 1:55:15Speaker 5: had to make early in the year you didn't see anymore. Yeah,
- 1:55:17Speaker 5: I mean, it was almost every week, it was, I
- 1:55:19Speaker 5: mean and it's the players too, like a lack of
- 1:55:21Speaker 5: control over the players messages from the start of this,
- 1:55:25Speaker 5: he'sn't right to the vibect Didn't he.
- 1:55:27Speaker 7: Dump his orange juice too at that breakfast that morning
- 1:55:29Speaker 7: when he was trying to be at the holders. I mean,
- 1:55:31Speaker 7: I don't know, they were just it was. It was
- 1:55:33Speaker 7: constant from beginning to end. There were just him stepping
- 1:55:35Speaker 7: in it, having to walk it back.
- 1:55:36Speaker 4: And you need to instill confidence. And it's funny like
- 1:55:40Speaker 4: can you imagine Patton after a battle against Rommel saying
- 1:55:43Speaker 4: you said it. I didn't. I mean, come on, you
- 1:55:45Speaker 4: can't do that.
- 1:55:48Speaker 3: The only way I don't know, Like I don't mean
- 1:55:50Speaker 3: to pile on the guy, but like, as someone that
- 1:55:52Speaker 3: was sitting in all these press conferences, I still think
- 1:55:55Speaker 3: the London press conference was worse.
- 1:55:58Speaker 5: It was terrible.
- 1:55:59Speaker 3: I think that was the worst one.
- 1:56:01Speaker 5: But I'm speaking to the players then speak to them.
- 1:56:04Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, let's so.
- 1:56:08Speaker 4: The body is still warm, I feel, and that's why
- 1:56:12Speaker 4: I was gonna come out and we have to be honest.
- 1:56:15Speaker 4: But I want to.
- 1:56:16Speaker 5: Say this because do you remember when Steve Spurrier took
- 1:56:18Speaker 5: over the Redskins. Sure, so ball coach Old ball coach.
- 1:56:22Speaker 5: He wanted to do it differently, like you know, the
- 1:56:24Speaker 5: whole like I got to sleep in my office. You know,
- 1:56:27Speaker 5: it's a twenty two hour a day job. Blah blah blah.
- 1:56:31Speaker 5: I was rooting for him because I thought it was
- 1:56:33Speaker 5: refreshing that he was willing to say I don't have
- 1:56:35Speaker 5: to do it like that. If you do this, and
- 1:56:37Speaker 5: you do this, and you do this, you can be successful.
- 1:56:40Speaker 5: I wanted it to work, just like I wanted this
- 1:56:42Speaker 5: to work with Girrod, because I do I do think
- 1:56:46Speaker 5: that you don't have to be a cantankerous a hole
- 1:56:48Speaker 5: at the podium every day to be successful. The way
- 1:56:51Speaker 5: Bill was, I think, if you know what you're doing
- 1:56:54Speaker 5: and you're buttoned down and you have everything under control,
- 1:56:56Speaker 5: your detail oriented, you don't have to be adversarial. But
- 1:57:01Speaker 5: much like with Steve Spurrier, it didn't work. So I
- 1:57:03Speaker 5: didn't get the example of having that guy, you know,
- 1:57:06Speaker 5: doing it in a different way having it work. And
- 1:57:08Speaker 5: it didn't work the way.
- 1:57:10Speaker 4: And Andy Reid who said, you know, if my coaches
- 1:57:13Speaker 4: are still here at eleven o'clock, there's something wrong.
- 1:57:15Speaker 5: Well, and Andy Reid is the perfect example. He is
- 1:57:17Speaker 5: a hard ass on the players, but he's considered a
- 1:57:21Speaker 5: players coach too. He is notorious for conducting one of
- 1:57:26Speaker 5: the most difficult training camps in the league and being
- 1:57:29Speaker 5: really demanding of the players. But at the same time,
- 1:57:31Speaker 5: they love them, They love playing for him, and they
- 1:57:34Speaker 5: feel like they have a voice with him. So I
- 1:57:36Speaker 5: think you can do it both ways. It's not easy.
- 1:57:39Speaker 4: We have a lot of emails, as I said before,
- 1:57:42Speaker 4: but we are going to end at two. We will
- 1:57:44Speaker 4: be back tomorrow in our regularly scheduled time at noon,
- 1:57:48Speaker 4: so we'll have another two hours to digest, analyze, dissect
- 1:57:52Speaker 4: what's going on. Who knows the way things are going,
- 1:57:55Speaker 4: Maybe we'll have some breaking news tomorrow. I don't know,
- 1:57:59Speaker 4: you know, I'm just saying. I'm saying, just stay tuned.
- 1:58:03Speaker 5: One more email the offseason, Mike, the Queen is dead.
- 1:58:06Speaker 7: Love to live the Queen like it's literally.
- 1:58:09Speaker 3: Yeah, two in a row.
- 1:58:11Speaker 4: One more email Jim and Pittsburgh.
- 1:58:13Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:58:13Speaker 4: So, and I can't help but be irritated that we
- 1:58:15Speaker 4: have so much cap space. Do I want to be
- 1:58:18Speaker 4: way over the cap?
- 1:58:18Speaker 5: No?
- 1:58:19Speaker 4: Do I like having crappy team in one hundred and
- 1:58:21Speaker 4: thirty million in cap space? No, there's no excuse for
- 1:58:24Speaker 4: I know the house is falling apart, but we have
- 1:58:26Speaker 4: tons of money in the bank account. The personnel department stinks,
- 1:58:30Speaker 4: and I questioned whether the Crafts are willing to spend
- 1:58:32Speaker 4: the money. If they are, why wasn't the team better
- 1:58:35Speaker 4: this year for what is supposed to be the best
- 1:58:38Speaker 4: ownership in sports. I don't understand how this made sense
- 1:58:41Speaker 4: from a business standpoint helped me understand ps What really
- 1:58:44Speaker 4: upsets me is I torments. I can't torment Steelers fans anymore.
- 1:58:50Speaker 4: I get that. I get that you're not we don't
- 1:58:52Speaker 4: have the upper hand, and like.
- 1:58:54Speaker 5: This point about not loving the fact that you have
- 1:58:56Speaker 5: the most cap space, I don't like that either. I
- 1:58:58Speaker 5: think it's not the same. But like your whole scarlet
- 1:59:00Speaker 5: letter thing about the number one overall pick, you have.
- 1:59:05Speaker 3: Nobody to spend money on, but you also have nobody
- 1:59:07Speaker 3: that wants your money. And that's where the position they
- 1:59:09Speaker 3: were in last year. Yeah, I mean, I think Mark
- 1:59:11Speaker 3: Daniels reported that they had a pretty big offer out
- 1:59:14Speaker 3: to Christian Wilkins. We know they had a big offer
- 1:59:16Speaker 3: out to Calvin Ridley and Auk to talk.
- 1:59:21Speaker 4: To them, I wouldn't pick up the phone they wanted.
- 1:59:24Speaker 3: They wanted to spend money I think on players last
- 1:59:27Speaker 3: off season, nobody wanted it.
- 1:59:28Speaker 4: And that's the key is they were willing to spend
- 1:59:31Speaker 4: the money. They just could. No one wanted their money. Yeah,
- 1:59:34Speaker 4: so that's a.
- 1:59:34Speaker 7: Good chance they can't spend all of it this year either.
- 1:59:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:59:36Speaker 3: Well, I think you hope that between Drake and whoever
- 1:59:39Speaker 3: they hire as the head coach, that becomes the draw.
- 1:59:42Speaker 3: Like if you if you're an offensive player and Ben
- 1:59:44Speaker 3: Johnson's the coach and Drake Mays the quarterback, you hope
- 1:59:47Speaker 3: that a receiver can see all right, I'm gonna be
- 1:59:49Speaker 3: used correctly. I'm gonna have somebody you can get the
- 1:59:51Speaker 3: ball to be and you draw them that way. But
- 1:59:54Speaker 3: I mean it's still it's still for win football.
- 1:59:56Speaker 4: Team does and I know we're up against it. But
- 1:59:59Speaker 4: does the offensive coordinator have to be a name? Does
- 2:00:02Speaker 4: it have to be someone who's established.
- 2:00:04Speaker 5: Who's the head coach?
- 2:00:06Speaker 4: Whoever it is.
- 2:00:07Speaker 5: It depends with the head coach.
- 2:00:08Speaker 4: And let's say it's verable.
- 2:00:11Speaker 5: I'd like him to be someone that people are.
- 2:00:13Speaker 4: Familiar, like, is the name of the offensive coordinator part
- 2:00:17Speaker 4: of making this place a destination?
- 2:00:20Speaker 6: No?
- 2:00:21Speaker 5: I just wouldn't want to feel good about the guy
- 2:00:23Speaker 5: that's the offensive coordinator if it's a defensive coach, if
- 2:00:25Speaker 5: it's Ben Johnson.
- 2:00:26Speaker 4: To your point, I'm not talking about for us if players.
- 2:00:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think the offensive coordinators. I think it's
- 2:00:32Speaker 5: the same thing that happened to like you signed Austin
- 2:00:34Speaker 5: Hooper because you had Alex van Pelt, Like there would
- 2:00:37Speaker 5: be guys that have connections to whoever the new coordinator is,
- 2:00:40Speaker 5: and that will help for those guys.
- 2:00:42Speaker 7: I don't do you think, Oh, I just think it
- 2:00:44Speaker 7: would be nice if you could kind of sell yourself
- 2:00:46Speaker 7: on it and triangulate this offensive coordinator is gonna fit
- 2:00:50Speaker 7: WELLGA because of this, And you know Vabel's implut like
- 2:00:54Speaker 7: you know when you can look at those three pieces O, HC,
- 2:00:56Speaker 7: and QB and say, all right, they've got something there.
- 2:00:59Speaker 7: The QB fits what they're going to try to do.
- 2:01:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I just feel like, so Ben Johnson
- 2:01:04Speaker 5: is probably the highest profile offensive couidator in football right now,
- 2:01:08Speaker 5: not counting head coaches that are offensive coordinators. Not to
- 2:01:11Speaker 5: get back into you a thing, So is Ben Johnson
- 2:01:16Speaker 5: a like maybe he's good enough that he would attract
- 2:01:19Speaker 5: free agents and said, like, see what he did in Detroit.
- 2:01:22Speaker 5: I'd like to play in that offense. Yeah, he could
- 2:01:23Speaker 5: make me some money, but I don't Is there anybody
- 2:01:26Speaker 5: else that would fall into that cabin? I don't know.
- 2:01:27Speaker 4: See, I just don't know. All Right, we gotta go.
- 2:01:30Speaker 4: We'll be back tomorrow at noon, so have no fear.
