Speaker 1: Chapter thirty three, in which Phileas Fogg shows himself equal
• 0:04
Speaker 1: to the occasion. An hour after the Henrietta passed the
• 0:11
Speaker 1: lighthouse which marks the entrance of the Hudson, turned the
• 0:15
Speaker 1: point of Sandy Hook and put to sea. During the
• 0:18
Speaker 1: day she skirted Long Island, passed Fire Island, and directed
• 0:22
Speaker 1: her course rapidly eastward. At noon the next day a
• 0:26
Speaker 1: man mounted the bridge to ascertain the vessel's position. It
• 0:30
Speaker 1: might be thought that this was Captain Speedy, not the
• 0:34
Speaker 1: least in the world. It was Phileas Fogg, esquire as
• 0:39
Speaker 1: for Captain Speedy, he was shut up in his cabin
• 0:41
Speaker 1: under lock and key, and was uttering loud cries which
• 0:45
Speaker 1: signified in anger at once pardonable and excessive. What had
• 0:50
Speaker 1: happened was very simple. Phileas Fogg wished to go to Liverpool,
• 0:54
Speaker 1: but the captain would not carry him there. Then Phileas
• 0:57
Speaker 1: Fogg had taken passage for Poordeux, and during the thirty
• 1:01
Speaker 1: hours he had been on board, had so shrewdly managed
• 1:04
Speaker 1: with his bank notes that the sailors and stokers, who
• 1:07
Speaker 1: were only an occasional crew and were not on the
• 1:10
Speaker 1: best terms with the captain, went over to him in
• 1:13
Speaker 1: a body. This was why Phileas Fogg was in command
• 1:17
Speaker 1: instead of Captain Speedy, why the captain was a prisoner
• 1:20
Speaker 1: in his cabin, and why, in short, the Henrietta was
• 1:24
Speaker 1: directing her course towards Liverpool. It was very clear to
• 1:30
Speaker 1: see mister Fogg manage the craft that he had been
• 1:33
Speaker 1: a sailor. How the adventure ended will be seen. Anon
• 1:37
Speaker 1: Aouda was anxious, though she said nothing as for passepartout.
• 1:42
Speaker 1: He thought mister Fogg's maneuver simply glorious. The captain had
• 1:46
Speaker 1: said between eleven and twelve knots, and the Henrietta confirmed
• 1:51
Speaker 1: his prediction. If then, for there were ifs still the
• 1:57
Speaker 1: sea did not become too boisterous, If if the wind
• 2:00
Speaker 1: did not veer round to the east, if no accident
• 2:03
Speaker 1: happened to the boat or its machinery, the Henrietta might
• 2:07
Speaker 1: cross the three thousand miles from New York to Liverpool
• 2:10
Speaker 1: in the nine days between the twelfth and the twenty
• 2:13
Speaker 1: first of December. It is true that once arrived, the
• 2:17
Speaker 1: affair on board the Henrietta, added to that of the
• 2:20
Speaker 1: Bank of England, might create more difficulties from mister Fogg
• 2:25
Speaker 1: than he imagined or could desire. During the first days,
• 2:30
Speaker 1: they went along smoothly enough. The sea was not very unpropitious,
• 2:35
Speaker 1: The wind seemed stationary in the northeast. The sails were hoisted,
• 2:40
Speaker 1: and the Henrietta plowed across the waves like a real
• 2:43
Speaker 1: Transatlantic steamer. Passepartout was delighted his master's last exploit, the
• 2:49
Speaker 1: consequences of which he ignored, enchanted him. Never had the
• 2:54
Speaker 1: crew seen so jolly and dexterous a fellow. He formed
• 2:58
Speaker 1: warm friendships with the sailors and amazed them with his
• 3:01
Speaker 1: acrobatic feats. He thought they managed the vessel like gentlemen,
• 3:06
Speaker 1: and that the stokers fired up like heroes. His loquacious
• 3:10
Speaker 1: good humor infected everyone. He had forgotten the past, its
• 3:14
Speaker 1: vexations and delays. He only thought of the end, so
• 3:18
Speaker 1: nearly accomplished, and sometimes he boiled over with impatience, as
• 3:23
Speaker 1: if heated by the furnaces of the Henrietta. Often, also,
• 3:28
Speaker 1: the worthy fellow revolved around Fix, looking at him with
• 3:31
Speaker 1: a keen, distrustful eye, But he did not speak to him,
• 3:36
Speaker 1: for their old intimacy no longer existed. Fix, it must
• 3:41
Speaker 1: be confessed, understood nothing of what was going on the
• 3:45
Speaker 1: conquest of the Henrietta. The bribery of the crew Fog,
• 3:49
Speaker 1: managing the boat like a skilled seaman, amazed and confused him.
• 3:54
Speaker 1: He did not know what to think. For after all,
• 3:57
Speaker 1: a man who began by stealing fifty five thousand pounds
• 4:00
Speaker 1: might end by stealing a vessel. And Fix was not
• 4:03
Speaker 1: unnaturally inclined to conclude that the Henrietta under Fogg's command
• 4:08
Speaker 1: was not going to Liverpool at all, but to some
• 4:12
Speaker 1: part of the world where the robber turned into a
• 4:14
Speaker 1: pirate would quietly put himself in safety. The conjecture was
• 4:19
Speaker 1: at least a plausible one, and the detective began to
• 4:23
Speaker 1: seriously regret that he had embarked on the affair. As
• 4:27
Speaker 1: for Captain Speedy, he continued to howl and growl in
• 4:31
Speaker 1: his cabin and passepartout whose duty it was to carry
• 4:35
Speaker 1: him his meals. Courageous as he was, took the greatest precautions,
• 4:40
Speaker 1: mister Fogg did not seem even to know that there
• 4:43
Speaker 1: was a captain on board. On the thirteenth, they passed
• 4:47
Speaker 1: the edge of the banks of Newfoundland, a dangerous locality
• 4:51
Speaker 1: during the winter, especially there are frequent fogs and heavy
• 4:54
Speaker 1: gales of wind ever since the evening before. The barometer
• 4:59
Speaker 1: suddenly falling had indicated an approaching change in the atmosphere,
• 5:03
Speaker 1: and during the night the temperature varied, the cold became sharper,
• 5:08
Speaker 1: and the wind veered to the southeast. This was a misfortune.
• 5:14
Speaker 1: Mister Fogg, in order not to deviate from his course,
• 5:17
Speaker 1: furled his sails and increased the force of the steam.
• 5:21
Speaker 1: But the vessel speed slackened owing to the state of
• 5:24
Speaker 1: the sea, the long waves of which broke against the stern.
• 5:29
Speaker 1: She pitched violently, and this retarded her progress. The breeze,
• 5:33
Speaker 1: little by little swelled into a tempest, and it was
• 5:36
Speaker 1: to be feared that the Henrietta might not be able
• 5:39
Speaker 1: to maintain herself upright on the waves. Passepartout's visage darkened
• 5:45
Speaker 1: with the skies, and for two days the poor fellow
• 5:48
Speaker 1: experienced constant fright. But Phileas Fogg was a bold mariner
• 5:53
Speaker 1: and knew how to maintain headway against the sea, and
• 5:56
Speaker 1: he kept on his course without even decreasing his head steam.
• 6:01
Speaker 1: The Henrietta, when she could not rise upon the waves,
• 6:04
Speaker 1: crossed them, swamping her deck, but passing safely. Sometimes the
• 6:10
Speaker 1: screw rose out of the water, beating its protruding end
• 6:14
Speaker 1: when a mountain of water raised the stern above the waves,
• 6:17
Speaker 1: but the craft always kept straight ahead. The wind, however,
• 6:22
Speaker 1: did not grow as boisterous as might have been feared.
• 6:25
Speaker 1: It was not one of those tempests which burst and
• 6:27
Speaker 1: rush on with the speed of ninety miles an hour.
• 6:30
Speaker 1: It continued fresh, but unhappily it remained obstinately in the southeast,
• 6:36
Speaker 1: rendering the sails useless. The sixteenth of December was the
• 6:42
Speaker 1: seventy fifth day since Phileas Fogg's departure from London, and
• 6:46
Speaker 1: the Henrietta had not yet been seriously delayed. Half of
• 6:50
Speaker 1: the voyage was almost accomplished, and the worst localities had
• 6:53
Speaker 1: been passed. In summer, success would have been well nigh certain.
• 6:58
Speaker 1: In winter, they were at the mercy of the bad season.
• 7:02
Speaker 1: Passepartout said nothing, but he cherished hope in secret, and
• 7:06
Speaker 1: comforted himself with the reflection that if the wind failed them,
• 7:10
Speaker 1: they might still count on the steam. On this day,
• 7:14
Speaker 1: the engineer came on deck, went up to mister Fogg,
• 7:17
Speaker 1: and began to speak earnestly with him, Without knowing why.
• 7:21
Speaker 1: It was a presentiment, perhaps Passepartout became vaguely uneasy. He
• 7:26
Speaker 1: would have given one of his ears to hear with
• 7:28
Speaker 1: the other what the engineer was saying. He finally managed
• 7:32
Speaker 1: to catch a few words and was sure he heard
• 7:34
Speaker 1: his master say, you are certain of what you tell me? Certain, sir,
• 7:41
Speaker 1: replied the engineer. You must remember that since we started
• 7:45
Speaker 1: we have got up hot fires in all our furnaces,
• 7:48
Speaker 1: and though we had cold enough to go on short
• 7:50
Speaker 1: steam from New York to Bordeaux, we haven't enough to
• 7:54
Speaker 1: go with all steam from New York to Liverpool. I
• 7:58
Speaker 1: will consider, replied mister Fogg. Passepartout understood it all. He
• 8:05
Speaker 1: was seized with mortal anxiety. The coal was giving out. Ah,
• 8:11
Speaker 1: if my master can get over that, muttered he, he'll
• 8:15
Speaker 1: be a famous man. He could not help imparting to
• 8:18
Speaker 1: fix what he had overheard. Then you believe that we
• 8:22
Speaker 1: are really are going to Liverpool, of course, ass replied
• 8:29
Speaker 1: the detective, shrugging his shoulders and turning on his heel.
• 8:33
Speaker 1: Pass Partout was on the point of vigorously resenting the epithet,
• 8:37
Speaker 1: the reason of which he could not, for the life
• 8:39
Speaker 1: of him comprehend, But he reflected that the unfortunate. Fix
• 8:44
Speaker 1: was probably very much disappointed and humiliated in his self
• 8:48
Speaker 1: esteem after having so awkwardly followed a false scent around
• 8:52
Speaker 1: the world and refrained. And now what course would Phileas
• 8:57
Speaker 1: Fogg adopt? It was difficult to imagine. Nevertheless, he seemed
• 9:02
Speaker 1: to have decided upon one. For that evening. He sent
• 9:05
Speaker 1: for the engineer and said to him, feed all the
• 9:08
Speaker 1: fires until the coal is exhausted. A few moments after
• 9:14
Speaker 1: the funnel of the Henrietta vomited forth torrents of smoke.
• 9:18
Speaker 1: The vessel continued to proceed with all steam on. But
• 9:22
Speaker 1: on the eighteenth the engineer, as he had predicted, announced
• 9:26
Speaker 1: that the coal would give out in the course of
• 9:28
Speaker 1: the day. Do not let the fires go down, replied
• 9:33
Speaker 1: mister Fogg. Keep them up to the last, let the
• 9:36
Speaker 1: valves be filled. Towards noon. Phileas Fogg, having ascertained their position,
• 9:43
Speaker 1: called past partout and ordered him to go for Captain Speedy.
• 9:47
Speaker 1: It was as if the honest fellow had been commanded
• 9:50
Speaker 1: to unchain a tiger. He went to the poop, saying
• 9:54
Speaker 1: to himself, he will be like a madman in a
• 9:59
Speaker 1: few moments, with cries and oaths. A bomb appeared on
• 10:02
Speaker 1: the poop deck. The bomb was Captain Speedy. It was
• 10:06
Speaker 1: clear that he was on the point of bursting. Where
• 10:10
Speaker 1: are we were the first words his anger permitted him
• 10:13
Speaker 1: to utter. Had the poor man been an apoplectic, he
• 10:17
Speaker 1: could never have recovered from his paroxysm of wrath. Where
• 10:22
Speaker 1: are we? He repeated with purple face. Seven hundred and
• 10:27
Speaker 1: seven miles from Liverpool, replied mister Fogg, with imperturbable calmness. Pirate,
• 10:35
Speaker 1: cried Captain Speedy. I have sent for you, sir, pick
• 10:40
Speaker 1: a roon, Sir, continued mister Fogg, to ask you to
• 10:45
Speaker 1: sell me your vessel. No, by all the devils, no,
• 10:51
Speaker 1: but I shall be obliged to burn her, burn the henrietta, Yes,
• 10:57
Speaker 1: at least the upper part of her. The coal has
• 11:00
Speaker 1: given out. Burn my vessel, cried Captain Speedy, who could
• 11:05
Speaker 1: scarcely pronounce the words A vessel worth fifty thousand dollars.
• 11:12
Speaker 1: Here are sixty thousand, replied Phileas Fogg, handing the captain
• 11:16
Speaker 1: a roll of bank bills. This had a prodigious effect
• 11:20
Speaker 1: on Andrew Speedy. An American can scarcely remain unmoved at
• 11:25
Speaker 1: the sight of sixty thousand dollars. The captain forgot in
• 11:29
Speaker 1: an instant, his anger, his imprisonment, and all his grudges
• 11:32
Speaker 1: against his passenger. The Henrietta was twenty years old. It
• 11:37
Speaker 1: was a great bargain. The bomb would not go off
• 11:40
Speaker 1: after all. Mister Fogg had taken away the match. And
• 11:45
Speaker 1: I shall still have the iron hull, said the captain
• 11:48
Speaker 1: in a softer tone. The iron hull and the engine
• 11:53
Speaker 1: is it? Agreed? Agreed? And Andrew Speedy, seizing the banknotes,
• 11:59
Speaker 1: counted them and signed them to his pocket. During this colloquy,
• 12:04
Speaker 1: passepartout was as white as a sheet, and Fix seemed
• 12:07
Speaker 1: on the point of having an apoplectic fit. Nearly twenty
• 12:11
Speaker 1: thousand pounds had been expended, and Fogg left the hull
• 12:14
Speaker 1: and engine to the captain. That is near the whole
• 12:17
Speaker 1: value of the craft. It was true, however, that fifty
• 12:21
Speaker 1: five thousand pounds have been stolen from the bank. When
• 12:25
Speaker 1: Andrew Speedy had pocketed the money, mister Fogg said to him,
• 12:29
Speaker 1: don't let this astonish you, sir. You must know that
• 12:32
Speaker 1: I shall lose twenty thousand pounds unless I arrive in
• 12:35
Speaker 1: London by a quarter before nine on the evening of
• 12:37
Speaker 1: the twenty first of December. I missed the steamer at
• 12:41
Speaker 1: New York, and as you refused to take me to Liverpool,
• 12:45
Speaker 1: and I did well, cried Andrew Speedy, for I have
• 12:49
Speaker 1: gained at least forty thousand dollars by it. He added,
• 12:53
Speaker 1: more sedately, do you know one thing, Captain Fogg. Captain Fogg,
• 13:01
Speaker 1: you've got something of a Yankee about you. And having
• 13:06
Speaker 1: paid his passenger what he considered a high compliment, he
• 13:09
Speaker 1: was going away when mister Fogg said, the vessel now
• 13:13
Speaker 1: belongs to me, certainly, from the keel to the trunk
• 13:17
Speaker 1: of the mass. All the wood that is very well.
• 13:21
Speaker 1: Have the interior seats, bunks and frames pulled down and
• 13:25
Speaker 1: burned them. It was necessary to have dry wood to
• 13:29
Speaker 1: keep the steam up to the adequate pressure, And on
• 13:32
Speaker 1: that day the poop cabins, bunks, and the spare deck
• 13:36
Speaker 1: were sacrificed. On the next day, the nineteenth of December,
• 13:40
Speaker 1: the masts, rafts and spars were burned. The crew worked
• 13:45
Speaker 1: lustily keeping up the fires. Passpar two hewed, cut and
• 13:49
Speaker 1: sawed away with all his might. There was a perfect
• 13:52
Speaker 1: rage for demolition the railings, fittings, the greater part of
• 13:56
Speaker 1: the deck and top sides disappeared on the twentieth, and
• 14:00
Speaker 1: the Henrietta was now only a flat hulk. But on
• 14:03
Speaker 1: this day they sighted the Irish coast and fastnet light.
• 14:07
Speaker 1: By ten in the evening, they were passing Queenstown, Phileas
• 14:11
Speaker 1: Fogg had only twenty four hours more in which to
• 14:14
Speaker 1: get to London. That length of time was necessary to
• 14:17
Speaker 1: reach Liverpool with all steam on, and the steam was
• 14:21
Speaker 1: about to give out altogether. Sir, said Captain Speedy, who
• 14:26
Speaker 1: was now deeply interested in mister Fogg's project. I really
• 14:30
Speaker 1: commiserate you. Everything is against you. We are only opposite Queenstown, ah,
• 14:37
Speaker 1: said mister Fogg. Is that place where we see the lights, Queenstown. Yes,
• 14:44
Speaker 1: can we enter the harbor? Not under three hours? Only
• 14:48
Speaker 1: at high tide stay, replied mister Fogg, calmly, without betraying
• 14:53
Speaker 1: in his features, that by a supreme inspiration he was
• 14:56
Speaker 1: about to attempt once more to conquer ill fortune. Queenstown
• 15:01
Speaker 1: is the Irish port at which the Transatlantic steamers stopped
• 15:05
Speaker 1: to put off the mails. These mails are carried to
• 15:08
Speaker 1: Dublin by express trains, always held in readiness to start
• 15:12
Speaker 1: from Dublin. They are sent on to Liverpool by the
• 15:14
Speaker 1: most rapid boats, and thus gained twelve hours on the
• 15:18
Speaker 1: Atlantic steamers. Phileas Fogg counted on gaining twelve hours in
• 15:23
Speaker 1: the same way. Instead of arriving at Liverpool the next
• 15:27
Speaker 1: evening by the Henrietta, He would be there by noon,
• 15:30
Speaker 1: and would therefore have time to reach London before a
• 15:33
Speaker 1: quarter before nine in the evening. The Henrietta entered Queenstown
• 15:38
Speaker 1: Harbor at one o'clock in the morning, it then being
• 15:41
Speaker 1: high tide, and Phileas Fogg, after being grasped heartily by
• 15:45
Speaker 1: the hand by Captain Speedy, left that gentleman on the
• 15:49
Speaker 1: leveled hulk of his craft, which was still worth half
• 15:52
Speaker 1: what he had sold it for. The party went on
• 15:55
Speaker 1: shore at once. Fix was greatly tempted to arrest mister
• 15:59
Speaker 1: Fogg on the same spot, but he did not why
• 16:04
Speaker 1: what struggle was going on within him? Had he changed
• 16:07
Speaker 1: his mind about his man? Did he understand that he
• 16:11
Speaker 1: had made a grave mistake. He did not, however, abandon
• 16:15
Speaker 1: mister Fogg. They all got upon the train, which was
• 16:19
Speaker 1: just ready to start at half past one at dawn
• 16:22
Speaker 1: of day. They were in Dublin, and they lost no
• 16:25
Speaker 1: time in embarking on a steamer, which, disdaining to rise
• 16:29
Speaker 1: upon the waves, invariably cut through them. Phileas Fogg at
• 16:34
Speaker 1: last disembarked on the Liverpool Key at twenty minutes before
• 16:38
Speaker 1: twelve twenty first December. He was only six hours distant
• 16:43
Speaker 1: from London. But at this moment Fix came up, put
• 16:48
Speaker 1: his hand upon mister Fogg's shoulder, and, showing his warrants,
• 16:51
Speaker 1: said you are really Phileas Fogg. I am I arrest
• 16:58
Speaker 1: you in the Queen's name. End of chapter
