Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Nadia Yousef: Ciso Lens Country Manager on the AI cybersecurity threat Five Eyes is warning about
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So the world's latest AI models, which we've been talking
- 0:03Speaker 1: about on the show for some time, they are apparently
- 0:05Speaker 1: going to pose quite a major threat to national security.
- 0:08Speaker 1: How do we know this, Well, there's been a joint
- 0:10Speaker 1: statement and it's rare that they do this from the
- 0:13Speaker 1: cyberchiefs of the Five Eyers Nations, which includes the Wink
- 0:17Speaker 1: New Zealand. They say within a matter of months, not years,
- 0:22Speaker 1: months not years, these new AI models like Anthropics and
- 0:26Speaker 1: Mythos could be used to hack government other organization safety systems.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Nadia Usef, cybersecurity expert, New Zealand country manager at CISOs
- 0:34Speaker 1: lenses with me this morning.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Nadia, good morning, good morning, Thanks for having me.
- 0:39Speaker 1: How serious is this, like within months not years that
- 0:42Speaker 1: you know, some North Korea or whoever could use these
- 0:45Speaker 1: new models and cripple us.
- 0:49Speaker 2: It's you know, it's quite concerning trends, of course, and
- 0:54Speaker 2: obviously it's keeping a lot of people awake at night.
- 0:57Speaker 2: The capabilities of new models pretty pretty spectacular. They're very impressive.
- 1:02Speaker 2: But what I would say is the technology that the
- 1:05Speaker 2: attackers are able to access is the same as the
- 1:08Speaker 2: technology that we're the defenders are able to access. And
- 1:11Speaker 2: I think that's an important thing to keep in mind.
- 1:13Speaker 2: You know, when you're using Google and Facebook and all
- 1:16Speaker 2: of those things, you see AI embedded in everything. You know,
- 1:19Speaker 2: whether you like it or not, it's just kind of there.
- 1:22Speaker 2: It's like that for security tools now as well. So
- 1:25Speaker 2: hopefully the tides lifting for.
- 1:27Speaker 1: All of us want so who it's it's about who
- 1:29Speaker 1: does it? Well, not who, but what does it faster?
- 1:34Speaker 1: I suppose they can say, you know, attack, go at nauseum,
- 1:39Speaker 1: go crazy, and then your sort of AI systems have
- 1:42Speaker 1: to go, what is the latest attack that they're doing
- 1:45Speaker 1: and how do we stop it? Is that kind of
- 1:47Speaker 1: how it works?
- 1:48Speaker 2: It is It is a bit of an arms race
- 1:50Speaker 2: of who can get to the you know, who can
- 1:52Speaker 2: get to that first, who can find out about vulnerabilities
- 1:56Speaker 2: and software and vulnerabilities in your system first? Or is
- 1:59Speaker 2: it is it you? And it's really complicated, and it's
- 2:03Speaker 2: never really been a very level playing field because attackers
- 2:06Speaker 2: have one job to break in, and defenders have a
- 2:09Speaker 2: range of different jobs and a range of different things
- 2:11Speaker 2: to protect, and it's not always easy to see what
- 2:15Speaker 2: they need to. So AI is speeding up what's always
- 2:18Speaker 2: been an incredibly challenging job but hopefully it's sort of
- 2:22Speaker 2: lifting tools available to everyone at once. Nadia.
- 2:26Speaker 1: One of the things that we've always been taught like
- 2:28Speaker 1: this is all pine and the sky stuff. But as
- 2:30Speaker 1: an individual person using a computer, if you do your
- 2:33Speaker 1: two factor authentication authentication, I should say, so you put
- 2:38Speaker 1: your past it in and then it sends you a
- 2:40Speaker 1: text message or whatever. Is that all still sacred and taboo?
- 2:44Speaker 1: Or is AI coming for that too?
- 2:47Speaker 2: That is so sacred? And that's one of the things
- 2:49Speaker 2: I was going to say. It's really easy to focus
- 2:51Speaker 2: on these really big powerful technologies, missiles, fable, all of
- 2:55Speaker 2: these sorts of things that are getting a lot of airtime,
- 2:58Speaker 2: but actually the day nothing or protect you as well
- 3:01Speaker 2: as a long, strong, unique password across your different accounts,
- 3:04Speaker 2: especially email, that really is the keys to the kingdom.
- 3:06Speaker 2: If someone gets into your email, they can change a
- 3:08Speaker 2: lot of passwords for everything and lock you out, and
- 3:11Speaker 2: your two factor authentication it's going to protect you against
- 3:15Speaker 2: most of the sort of attacks that we're going to see.
- 3:17Speaker 2: So it's still absolutely the best security that you can
- 3:20Speaker 2: take on good stuff.
