- 0:00Our number two, it's Miller in Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:03Network. Our final hour without Ken as he
- 0:07makes his way back from vacation and he's going to be happy, at
- 0:10least for now, as the Canadians come back down to nothing.
- 0:13They get the win in the Olympics and punch their ticket into the
- 0:17gold medal match. The American team getting ready
- 0:20to get started here a little bit later on this afternoon.
- 0:24Hanging out with me today. He is Nick Marowitz from Locked
- 0:26On Cyclones. Nick, Olympic hockey doing
- 0:30anything for you. When, when Heise's involved, of
- 0:33course I love watching the Winter Olympics, but if, if
- 0:37we're going to have Heisey's score an assist to win gold
- 0:39medals, like, yeah, I'm all for it.
- 0:42That was incredible, that pass that Heisey made Taylor, by the
- 0:45way, that thing was a thing of beauty and setting that up for
- 0:48the USEUS team yesterday to beat the Canadians.
- 0:51It looked rough for a while for the Canadian men's squad squad
- 0:54and and we'll see a little bit later today.
- 0:57It maybe it's just because so many of those preliminary realm,
- 1:01I look up and it's 51 like, OK, I'm not a big hockey fan as it
- 1:05is. And then you just couple with
- 1:06the blowouts that we're seeing so often during the qualifying
- 1:09round. Maybe that had something to do
- 1:10with it. But I will tell you, if we do
- 1:12get US Canada, yeah, that's going to be appointment viewing
- 1:15for the gold medal match. 100% I like hockey personally, so I'm
- 1:21I'm a little bit more bought in it sounds like, and you are.
- 1:23But yeah, a game like that, you cannot miss that.
- 1:25So are you a Bruins fan too? We found out last week when
- 1:28you're joining us that you like all the the Boston teams, Red
- 1:30Sox, Patriots, Bruins as well. What about this?
- 1:33Remember Trent, we, we talked about this.
- 1:34It's a little embarrassing, but I can't root for the Bruins
- 1:37because they're Black. People that's right, that's.
- 1:39True. That's right, I do remember now
- 1:42my memory, so you'll find out someday.
- 1:44Your memory starts to fade a little bit, so I'll probably
- 1:47repeat myself quite often. I I get repetitive at times.
- 1:50You'll hear this some of the same stories.
- 1:52You'll roll your eyes and here he goes again but started
- 1:54getting old. Nick, that's what you got
- 1:55looking forward to get excited. Really got to It's meant that in
- 1:58my brain, when you're telling those stories, like I got to
- 2:00make sure I know your stories just as well as.
- 2:02You do yes, that's that's what we're going to be working for,
- 2:05no doubt. Nick Berevitz with us here
- 2:06today. So I want to get into a couple
- 2:09of different topics and and this one was I guess Cyclone adjacent
- 2:13former coach at Iowa State, Nate Shield House sticking with the
- 2:17Rams. He was interviewed for a couple
- 2:19of open jobs and the head coaching job.
- 2:21I made a prediction that he was going to get the Steelers job
- 2:24because he's a young guy. The last three hires that they
- 2:26made, Chuck Noel, he was a young guy.
- 2:28He was in his 30s when he was hired way back in the day.
- 2:31Bill Cower was 38 years old. Mike Tomlin was 38 years old.
- 2:35I thought they were going to continue down that path.
- 2:37Instead, they went completely the opposite direction to the
- 2:40Steelers and they went with a retread of a retread of a
- 2:43retread and McCarthy. But that aside, Nate Shield
- 2:46House staying in LA, more tutelage under, of course,
- 2:49McVeigh and a guy that feels like at some point, though, you
- 2:53talk about a star rising, that's certainly the case with Nate
- 2:55Shield House. Oh, 100% yeah.
- 2:58I'm excited to see what he can do with the Rams next season and
- 3:00what that Rams offense will look like.
- 3:02They were solid this year. It wasn't quite enough to get it
- 3:05done. Obviously the Seahawks were the
- 3:07eventual champion. So how upset can you be with a
- 3:10loss like that? But you know, as a, as a former
- 3:13Cyclone for a couple of years there, I, I do like keeping tabs
- 3:16on on coach shield house. And remember there was a
- 3:19conversation when Iowa State had the coaching position open up,
- 3:22like could Nate come back and coach Iowa State?
- 3:25What would that look like? But he he ends up staying with
- 3:28the Rams and I'm super pumped about what that offense will
- 3:31look like with with Matt continuing the to further his
- 3:34career. Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:35And the big season and the team that actually pushed the
- 3:37Seahawks and one of the few teams that could move the ball
- 3:39against the Seahawks, and that was one of the few, was the Rams
- 3:42this season. They're going to be one of the
- 3:43favorites going in once again next year and what they're going
- 3:46to be able to do. But good to work out a shield
- 3:48house. Did your pass ever cross when
- 3:51you're at Iowa State when he was coaching?
- 3:53He would have been coaching when I was a student.
- 3:56Yeah. I didn't personally ever meet
- 3:57him. But you know, I wasn't quite,
- 3:59quite a top caliber wide receiver.
- 4:02I wasn't on the team. Right.
- 4:03Yeah, yeah, I got that. I got that.
- 4:05Well, Nick, from there we continue on and we talked
- 4:08earlier about the matchups. Quick hit again, the BYU matchup
- 4:13for Iowa State late night, 2 emotional wins.
- 4:17There are things you can look at it situationally and you can
- 4:21just look at it X's and O. It's going to be a tough
- 4:22environment. They're playing without
- 4:24Saunders. Maybe they found some things out
- 4:26there last time out against Arizona.
- 4:28They came back against Arizona without him and I think that's
- 4:30said a lot here. Plus Iowa State with the angle
- 4:33that they have, I don't know there.
- 4:34There's a lot of signs that point to at minimum, it's
- 4:37probably going to be a weird one up in Provo.
- 4:39Yeah, absolutely. I will say that Iowa State, you
- 4:42know, looking at if you want to go into the like coming off of a
- 4:44win or, or coming into a trap game or whatever it is, Iowa
- 4:48State's only indicator would probably be the loss to
- 4:50Cincinnati coming off of Kansas. I I actually feel pretty good
- 4:54about them off of their two big wins.
- 4:56You're looking at like big win over Purdue on the road.
- 4:59Then you've got Iowa, yes, it's at home, but everybody knows how
- 5:02big the side Hawk is and they win that game.
- 5:04So from that perspective, I do think Iowa State is OK.
- 5:08It really comes down to how does the matchup look and and where
- 5:11do the, you know, specific assignments fall for where does
- 5:15TJ Altelberger try to get guys on the floor?
- 5:18I like where Iowa states at over their last two.
- 5:20I think their effort has been really, really high and I think
- 5:22that they're they they're falling into their roles, each
- 5:26in their own role as a player. So I like them from that
- 5:28perspective. But if BYU pushes hard and Iowa
- 5:31State loses that identity, which they have this season in the
- 5:33past going into ISO ball, getting confused on defense,
- 5:36this could end up being either very, very close or an upset for
- 5:39sure. We talked earlier about Iowa,
- 5:41Wisconsin. I hate the matchup.
- 5:43I hate the spot. I mean, there's so many factors
- 5:45that you point against coupled with what we've seen out of this
- 5:49Iowa team and just the rest of the squad in order for Iowa to
- 5:52go in and beat Wisconsin this weekend, a Wisconsin team that
- 5:55themselves has been wildly inconsistent this year.
- 5:59A you got to run him off the three-point line.
- 6:00You can't let him get to the rim.
- 6:02All the things that we talked about earlier.
- 6:04But you need other guys to step up.
- 6:05And Nick, when you look at this Iowa squad and outside of well,
- 6:08you know what you're going to get mostly game in a game out
- 6:11from Bennett Sturtz, Tavion Banks is a nice role player.
- 6:14He hustles his ass off. He does all the the little
- 6:17things, the intangibles, right? You're going to get that out of
- 6:19him, man. Yao, he is not a scorer by any
- 6:22means. It comes down to Cooper.
- 6:24Koch has got to make more shots, and though he's been OK and
- 6:26knocked out a couple, he's got to have a couple more.
- 6:28You need one of the two guards off the bench, either Sage or
- 6:31Howard, one of those guys to step up.
- 6:33Kale Combs is struggling mightily.
- 6:35It comes back to something I feel like we've been talking
- 6:37about all season long, though, is Alvaro for Garris.
- 6:40And when fool Garris has scored in double figures, they're 11
- 6:43and O this season. It's been inconsistent out of
- 6:47him. I don't know.
- 6:47When you see the Hawkeyes and you see him, it feels like you
- 6:50can tell right away. Is it you're going to get good
- 6:52Alvaro? Are you going to get bad Alvaro?
- 6:55This feels like a game. If they are going to go up there
- 6:57and get a victory like they need a 1518 point performance from
- 7:00him. Yeah, I agree with you
- 7:02completely. Just to obviously a lot of my
- 7:04expertise right now is with Iowa State and to draw the comparison
- 7:07there against Houston, you got 8 out of play to six out of
- 7:11Bateman. And then obviously the go ahead
- 7:13shot from Heisey had 11 off the bench.
- 7:15Iowa State was extremely deep in that game.
- 7:18Not necessarily the case every single game, but when you're
- 7:19able to get that kind of contribution off the bench or
- 7:22from players that maybe don't always show up, if they show up
- 7:26and have a big night, yeah, Iowa, I think Iowa has to have
- 7:29that to win this game, which is unfortunate.
- 7:32But that does that means that it is within reach, right?
- 7:34Like it doesn't necessarily have to be some sort of miracle that
- 7:37they pull off to get this win. I think it's possible.
- 7:39It's possible. I wouldn't say probable, but it
- 7:41is possible. The projected void spread right
- 7:44now is Wisconsin by three. That's how they have it set up.
- 7:48Two, excuse me, at Ken Pomeroy and three, 3 1/2 over at
- 7:52Bartorvic. Those are the numbers that are
- 7:53out there. We'll see a point spread likely
- 7:55sometime tomorrow on that front. Speaking of that, I wanted to
- 7:58see DraftKings has been doing a really nice job here recently of
- 8:02getting a lot of the weekend games in college basketball,
- 8:05getting those point spreads out early and for years and years
- 8:07and years, you'd have to wait until a late afternoon before
- 8:11the game, those kind of things before you'd actually get a
- 8:13point spread. You can always project them with
- 8:15the advanced analytic sites, but yes, it is.
- 8:17So take a stab at this one. I'm going to put you on the
- 8:19spot. We'll see how your gambling
- 8:21brains working today, Nick. Iowa State at BYU, the line is
- 8:25available. You can wager on this.
- 8:27What do you have for Cyclones and Cougars?
- 8:30What's the line right now? What I want to see what you
- 8:33believe is. OK, OK, yeah, well I will say
- 8:36this last time I was on, I made 2 picks, hit them both.
- 8:39Yes. So that was that was a nice
- 8:41start. That was a nice start to my
- 8:43picks on the radio here. I like Iowa State in this game
- 8:47and I do think it'll end up being maybe 13 points.
- 8:50It's it's not going to be a 13 point game the entire way.
- 8:52Let's be very clear about that. I think it's going to end up
- 8:54being a foul situation and a late bucket here or there.
- 8:57I think Iowa State wins this one probably somewhere in the 83 to
- 9:0170 range. I think their defense is going
- 9:03to be too much for BYU. So you're pretty confident?
- 9:05Well, if that is the case, you're going to cruise to a win.
- 9:08The Cyclone's a 3 1/2 point favorite in this one, 3 1/2.
- 9:12So it sounds like Dick's saying, put all your money put.
- 9:14No, we'd never say those kind of things.
- 9:17Never do that. Bet a unit whatever you're
- 9:20comfortable and comfortable losing.
- 9:21That's all that we say to bet on this program -3 1/2.
- 9:25Currently the line of DraftKings for Iowa State and BYU.
- 9:28And it's not just Hawkeyes and Cyclones this weekend, Nick.
- 9:31This weekend we get #1 verse #3 two versus 4.
- 9:35Let's start Michigan, Duke and the Wolverines.
- 9:38Outside of that loss, their only loss of the year at home at the
- 9:41hands of Wisconsin, they have been absolutely incredible.
- 9:45What they did when they went out in the players era, what they
- 9:48did, the dominating performance a a 40 point win against both
- 9:51San Diego State and Gonzaga. They beat Auburn by 30 out
- 9:56there. What they've done through the
- 9:57Big 10, and though they had a downturn, I think there was a
- 9:59run of like 6 straight games that they didn't cover,
- 10:02including the one loss that they had against Wisconsin.
- 10:04They bounced back in such a big way.
- 10:06Yet you go back and forth with this Michigan team, they were
- 10:09down 16 to Northwestern, a bad Northwestern team.
- 10:12They were down 16, came back at 1 by 12.
- 10:14But watching them Tuesday night against Purdue in West Lafayette
- 10:18dominated that one really from start to finish in any glimmer
- 10:21of hope that Purdue would have of a comeback.
- 10:23Seemed like Michigan had an answer every single time.
- 10:26But on the other side's the Dookies and I love going back in
- 10:29history. This is something that used to
- 10:31happen a lot more often. You don't remember it because
- 10:33you're young, but this was something that happened on a
- 10:36yearly basis. You'd get one of these big non
- 10:38conference matchups in late January in sometime in February.
- 10:42I'm happy to see this coming back.
- 10:43And I read a little bit about that.
- 10:45There is one of those basketball groups that puts together exempt
- 10:48tournaments and the like. They're the ones that are behind
- 10:50having this game being played in DC.
- 10:52But what a matchup and potentially this is what we're
- 10:55going to see on Monday night for the national championship.
- 10:58Yeah, there's a very real chance to these.
- 11:00These two teams are just incredible.
- 11:02Yaxel Lindenborg has been phenomenal for Michigan and you
- 11:04mentioned kind of that drop that Michigan saw in that, you know,
- 11:086 game stretch or whatever it was.
- 11:11I don't wouldn't expect Michigan to perform at the level they
- 11:13were performing at, you know, during the the players era all
- 11:15season long. And I said the same thing about
- 11:17Iowa State. Like you just can't keep up that
- 11:20level of intensity for an entire year.
- 11:22I despite even that stretch of games, still think Michigan is
- 11:27the number one team. Obviously Arizona has been kind
- 11:29of in that conversation and, and honestly, any of the top five
- 11:33teams I think on any given night could be the number one team
- 11:35that day. But for the season so far,
- 11:38Michigan has just been unreal. And this is a real true treat
- 11:42here. I, I don't know if I'm able to
- 11:43make a pick on Duke or, or Michigan here.
- 11:46Obviously Cam Boozer has been incredible for, for those Blue
- 11:49Devils, but the way I'm looking at this, considering I'm a Big
- 11:5212 fan, this is big 10 ACC. This is literally just sit back
- 11:56with your popcorn and relax. This is like watching the Super
- 11:59Bowl when your team's not in it kind of thing. 2 1/2 the number
- 12:01Michigan favored over Duke. Again, neutral court for this
- 12:04one that'll be played in DC. Well, you definitely can provide
- 12:08a lot of context with our other top 4 matchup, Arizona at
- 12:12Houston, pretty simple, at least for me.
- 12:15Arizona, there's been so much talk about the three-point
- 12:18shooting. They shot it well the last time
- 12:19out. This Arizona team, they are big,
- 12:22they are physical, They can beat you a bunch of different ways.
- 12:26But then Houston, I just love their toughness.
- 12:28And I think you understood last week when I talked with you,
- 12:31Nick, when you were on the program with us.
- 12:32My absolute love affair that I have with Kingston Flemings.
- 12:35I have I have a crush on Kingston, Flemings and and how
- 12:38about some of the shots that he made on Monday, though he had
- 12:41that late near turnover that really cost Houston a chance to
- 12:44tie that thing up. Fleming, though, an absolute
- 12:47stud, he is a difference maker. What do you think we're going to
- 12:50see in this one down in Houston? In fact, a point spread out also
- 12:53for this one. Cougars favored by 5 1/2.
- 12:57Yeah, that's that's I think how it's going to go.
- 12:59I do feel pretty good about Houston in this one, especially
- 13:03coming off of a loss to Iowa State.
- 13:04And when you look at Houston's schedule, they've got Kansas,
- 13:07they got Iowa State, they got Arizona on this, this very short
- 13:10stretch. And so they have to show up big
- 13:12time for these games or else like where do they go in the Big
- 13:1512 tournament where like all the seating and everything?
- 13:17So they have to win these games. When you speak on Arizona's 3
- 13:21point shooting, I just wanted to bring up because I brought up
- 13:23volume earlier for some context, Iowa State shooting, what is
- 13:27this? 30, almost 40% on the season,
- 13:29they've shot 590 threes, almost 600 threes.
- 13:33Arizona, yeah, a little bit below that 35.6, but they've
- 13:36only shot 432. So about what is 160 less
- 13:40threes? Arizona just doesn't operate
- 13:43from really outside of the arc. They'll they'll go a game and
- 13:45shoot 3 or 4 times. So I do think you're going to
- 13:48get that tough matchup on the inside.
- 13:50And I think Arizona's kind of familiarity with that is going
- 13:53to play a really strong role in Arizona.
- 13:56Of course, everyone wants to talk about like live by or die
- 13:58by the three. I think Arizona is going to feel
- 14:00a little bit more confident in this game and the fact that they
- 14:02don't have to shoot well, they can just play their game and and
- 14:06compete with Houston. But with what Houston has on
- 14:08their talent, you know, talent wise on their roster and what
- 14:11the position they're all are coming off of a loss to Iowa
- 14:14State at Hilton. I I like Houston in this game,
- 14:17but this is yet another juggernaut versus juggernaut was
- 14:20an immovable force versus unstoppable object.
- 14:23The other way around. This is going to be a fun one
- 14:25too. Also have to remember Arizona
- 14:27for the second straight game they'll be playing without their
- 14:29star freshman Co of Pete is not going to be out there.
- 14:32He's going to be out. They had another one of their
- 14:34players, I can't remember off the top of my head that was out
- 14:36with an illness. I'm not sure if he's going to be
- 14:37back for them, but taken not a deep Arizona team either.
- 14:42Tommy Lloyd hasn't gone real deep into that bench this
- 14:44season. So how impactful that's going to
- 14:46be. But we know Pete's not going to
- 14:47be there as he's not going to be there for this matchup in that
- 14:51one couple of their Big 12 ones, Texas Tech now played without JT
- 14:55topping. Now I Speaking of lost money, I
- 14:59got a couple of tickets on them to make a final four a national
- 15:01championship long shot. I I'm a big Mccaslin fan.
- 15:04I love this team. I love the way that they were
- 15:06built. Christian Anderson, an absolute
- 15:08stud. They're not making a final four
- 15:10without JT topping. But just how much do you
- 15:13diminish Texas Tech? And certainly knowing that
- 15:15they're coming up for Iowa State?
- 15:18Yeah, I I think it's going to be a huge change to how that team
- 15:21operates. JT Toppen has just been so
- 15:23incredible. And when I watched them play
- 15:25against Arizona State that game, I did feel like they looked out
- 15:29of sorts. They look confused.
- 15:31There are turnovers left and right, and I don't think that's
- 15:34characteristic of the Red Raiders this season.
- 15:37But moving forward, that could be a little bit more what we're
- 15:40used to. The rest of their schedule goes
- 15:41Kansas State, Cincinnati, then they'll be in Hilton, and then
- 15:45TCU and BYU to round out the season.
- 15:47I could realistically see them going what, two and three maybe
- 15:51through that stretch. TCU seems to be a pretty solid
- 15:54team. If you pick one out of the TCU,
- 15:56Kansas State, Cincinnati, I think they're capable of losing
- 15:58any one of those. I don't love where Texas Tech is
- 16:01at anymore without JT Top, and they're still a very good team.
- 16:04I'm not gonna act like they're gonna go in 5-10 the season, but
- 16:07they JC Toppins presence will be missed for sure.
- 16:10Absolutely, definitely changes the equation for that squad.
- 16:14One final thing, you watch a lot of college hoops as I do and as
- 16:17you look through, we know the top tier teams, the four that we
- 16:20just mentioned with Duke and Michigan and Arizona and
- 16:23Houston. You get into that next group.
- 16:25Florida, the defending national champion, how they've turned
- 16:28their season around after a slow start.
- 16:30Iowa State, that next tier team. I want to go a step further
- 16:33though, and if you're looking for a dark horse Final Four
- 16:37team, A A-Team say comes from a five seed or worse, something
- 16:41like that, maybe a four seed or worse.
- 16:42Is there anybody that's caught your attention this year?
- 16:45Like Kansas normally would be one of those teams?
- 16:48I think they're an absolute cross off with what's happened
- 16:50with Darren Peterson and and Bill Self in the way that he
- 16:53just looks incredibly frustrated because you don't know, you
- 16:55don't know what you're going to get out of them.
- 16:57Is there anybody though that you like out of that next group of
- 16:59teams? You know, there, there's a few
- 17:02teams out there that you could definitely look towards.
- 17:07I don't know if I want to throw this name out there.
- 17:09It's it's really, really out there.
- 17:11I think it's high point, OK, when you're looking at the net
- 17:14rating versus pace, the trapezoid of excellence, if you
- 17:17will, they, they favor them very, very highly.
- 17:20And teams like Ozaga, I'm not high on Vanderbilt.
- 17:22I guess Louisville could be in that conversation.
- 17:24I believe it's high point. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong comes
- 17:28out of nowhere. Don't sleep on like we could be
- 17:30looking at like a Saint Peters type of like nobody knows who
- 17:33they are. Elite 8 appearance is is kind of
- 17:35what I'm looking at for them. All right, well, if high point
- 17:38does that, and that's one thing when we get to the tournament,
- 17:40you can bet on them not to make a final four.
- 17:42You can also bet on make the Sweet 16, so you might be able
- 17:44to get a good price, but your bracket, you're looking for that
- 17:46upset. Nick's helping us out here, High
- 17:48point. I'm going to circle them and
- 17:50when they show up on the television, I'm going to get a
- 17:52glimpse at them too. I I'd love to do that and this
- 17:54is the only sport for me, Nick, where I can sit there and I can
- 17:58watch a random Summit League game and I am completely
- 18:00content. I can't do that with college
- 18:03football. Look, there has to be some kind
- 18:05of angle that I have or maybe some kind of bet that I have to
- 18:07really sit down. But I am completely fine
- 18:09watching low, major, mid major basketball, random stuff.
- 18:12These Friday nights before the Big 10 started to bully their
- 18:16way in. I loved when we got the Mac
- 18:18Games, the Metro Athletic Conference and we had Canisius
- 18:21against Manhattan and those kind of ones on Friday nights.
- 18:24I absolutely love that. But High Point as a team, I'll
- 18:27be honest, I haven't seen. I'm going to put them on my
- 18:29list. So there's the dark horse right
- 18:30there. What are you going to do when
- 18:32the bracket shows up in high points?
- 18:33The 15 against second seeded Iowa State.
- 18:36Well, I don't know if I feel great about that.
- 18:41Oh, man, yeah, this is I I love. I live for March, though, man.
- 18:44Like as the weather starts to warm up and golf starts to
- 18:47become a real possibility and we're filling out brackets, like
- 18:51even, you know, like Lipscomb in Iowa State last year was like,
- 18:54oh, this is upset alert. And I was like, yeah, it's going
- 18:56to stink if Iowa State loses, but we're watching March
- 18:59Madness, man. So this is going to be electric
- 19:00either way. No doubt about it.
- 19:02We're going to take a quick timeout.
- 19:03More Cyclone talk coming up on the other side Fridays it is
- 19:06Eugene repay from the Des Moines Register and a couple of
- 19:10matchups out in Utah. We'll talk about that and more
- 19:12on the Cyclones with the Jeep. Eugene, when we come back, Trent
- 19:15Con and Nick Marowitz with you today, it's Miller and Condon on
- 19:18the Iowa Sports Radio Network. Welcome back.
- 19:20It's a Friday edition of Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports
- 19:23Radio Network across the state of Iowa Flagship right here, one
- 19:27O 6.3 K X&O as long as our listeners in Sioux City, IA
- 19:31City, Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities and everywhere on the
- 19:34iHeartRadio app. It is Friday and that means
- 19:37Eugene Repay is joining us. So I texted Eugene, setting a
- 19:41time for today a little bit earlier.
- 19:43Didn't hear back right away, which is fine.
- 19:45That's going to happen. And then I had that sinking
- 19:48feeling. Oh no, Maybe Eugene's on his way
- 19:50out to Utah. But you tell me, Eugene, the old
- 19:53man on the beat, Travis Hines, he took this trip.
- 19:55So you're stuck here in Iowa. He gets to go have fun in Utah.
- 19:59Yeah, Travis Hines is flexing his seniority, maybe squeezing
- 20:02in a ski trip, maybe squeezing in a couple of national parks.
- 20:05But yeah, he'll he'll be representing the register for
- 20:08both the Utah and the BYU games. Still, you got to go to Vegas.
- 20:12You've had some good trips already, so you can't complain
- 20:14too much right now. In the old days.
- 20:16I'll tell you as I'm the old timer here with Nick hanging out
- 20:18with us as well today, Eugene, that back in the day both the
- 20:22guys that were covered in Iowa State got to go on all the
- 20:24trips. But we know it is a different
- 20:26world, unfortunately for all of us in the media environment, and
- 20:29not the case for things like that anymore.
- 20:35That I was about 50 years younger, but I mean 50 years
- 20:38older back then or whatever it may be.
- 20:40But then sometimes I think of the trade-offs where you don't
- 20:42have Wi-Fi, you don't have laptops, so I don't know.
- 20:45Have to hit those deadlines a little bit different back in the
- 20:48day too compared to getting things online and get them up at
- 20:51the Boyd register.com and that's where you can find all the work
- 20:53from Eugene rope Eugene. Let's get into the matchup
- 20:57coming on the heels of those great victories at Hilton.
- 21:00Now you go on the road against BYU.
- 21:02Richie Saunders is out as he has lost for the season with his
- 21:05injury. That changes the equation.
- 21:07But a tough environment, a tough spot coming off those emotional
- 21:10victories against a BYU team and still they might have the number
- 21:14one pick still over on that side too.
- 21:16This is not going to be an easy one against the Cougars.
- 21:19No, not at all. And BYU has been having a little
- 21:22bit of a downturn in recent weeks.
- 21:23They've lost six of their last nine games.
- 21:25When you have a player like AJ Debansa, who so far is also just
- 21:30been as advertised, you look at who Iowa State has faced and
- 21:34straight games, you got Darren Peterson projected #1 Kingston,
- 21:37Flemington and Houston and projected #5 and now AJ Debansa
- 21:41projected #2 and he's been stepping up his game with
- 21:44Saunders out. He just came off of a 35 point
- 21:47outing against Arizona. Debansa seems to have this knack
- 21:50for elevating his game in the second-half or in crunch time.
- 21:53And this is a guy that can score anywhere on the court.
- 21:55And now he's got a pretty good dynamic duo partner.
- 21:58And Robert Wright, a former Baylor transfer who's built off
- 22:02of his freshman year at Baylor in a big way.
- 22:05And he's just seen statistical jumps all across the board.
- 22:07So that's a pretty good two man tandem that anyone in the Big 12
- 22:11would love to have. Yeah, when you look at this Iowa
- 22:15State team and what they've been through this season, you talk
- 22:17about the last two wins over Kansas and Houston.
- 22:19I was making the argument this week that these two were their
- 22:22biggest wins by far. Purdue hasn't quite panned out
- 22:25to what the I thought they were going to be.
- 22:27Same thing with Saint John's. Where do you think Iowa State is
- 22:29that momentum wise? We're seeing more contribution
- 22:31from the bench. Like, yeah, this BYU team is
- 22:34going to be tough, but if they can get this win and continue
- 22:37that momentum into the Arizona game, where do you kind of
- 22:39project Iowa State finishing through these last five games
- 22:42here? Yeah, 100%.
- 22:44I think if they're able to beat BYU and we'll see what happens
- 22:47in that Arizona game. But right now I would agree that
- 22:50those last two ones that they just had are the two biggest of
- 22:53the season especially. They have those games and
- 22:55back-to-back games and a 72 hour time span.
- 22:58Like you look across the country, I don't know if there's
- 23:00anyone who had a 72 hour stretch like that.
- 23:03So for Iowa State to come in with this much momentum, if they
- 23:07can keep building on the road, beat Utah, beat BYU, and then
- 23:10we'll see what happens in Arizona.
- 23:12But that one seat is still on the table.
- 23:13It's not completely out of the equation.
- 23:15There are a lot of teams jockeying for that and it's
- 23:17definitely going to be a crowded race at the top.
- 23:19But right now I would say he's doing all the right things to
- 23:21keep that on the table. Eugene, we've had seen this
- 23:24program have so much success down in Kansas City at the Big
- 23:2812 Tournament. But in a way, this team feels
- 23:31different. I mean, it feels like there's
- 23:32more upside, there's more opportunity.
- 23:35I know we're still a couple of weeks away and you're never
- 23:37going to throw games. However, when we get to Kansas
- 23:41City, in terms of maybe success for the NCAA Tournament, would
- 23:46it be a bad thing if they get knocked off in the semifinals,
- 23:49get that extra day of relaxation?
- 23:51You're never going to have TJ Otzelberger say that they're
- 23:54going to do it. But just for the betterment of
- 23:56this squad and hope of making that deep run in the NCAA
- 23:59Tournament, would that be a bad thing?
- 24:01It might be one of those things that maybe if it pans out and
- 24:04and I would say goes deep at the end, then you think, oh, OK, it
- 24:07all worked out, that's good. But but right now I don't yeah,
- 24:10I agree. I don't think also Burger
- 24:12anybody will say they should throw the game.
- 24:13But you look at that semifinals, just the top 6 seeds in general,
- 24:17like it's going to be a dogfight.
- 24:19So it's not going to be, you know, if you were to fall in the
- 24:21semifinals, that wouldn't be it's not a loss you beat
- 24:24yourself up over. It would be to one of those high
- 24:26caliber teams ideally. So it wouldn't be the worst
- 24:29thing in the world, but maybe it would all pan out.
- 24:31They get that extra, they have rested.
- 24:33It all parlays into a deep NCAA Tournament run.
- 24:36Yeah, I mean, personally, I'm of the belief that winning those
- 24:39big games is great momentum builder for going into the NCAA
- 24:42tournament. And when you talk about what it
- 24:44takes to win those kinds of games here, Eugene, Iowa State,
- 24:47when you look at the bench and the contribution over the last
- 24:50few games, guys like Jamario Bateman, Nate Heisey, even
- 24:53Dominicus Playdo has stuffed up big time for the clones.
- 24:56Is it possible to continue getting that kind of
- 24:58contribution from those guys? Or is Nate Heisey going to kind
- 25:01of look like he did last year, where he had a few games where
- 25:03he stepped up and then he ended up not doing quite as much as I
- 25:06think that the clones needed when March came around?
- 25:10Yeah, that's definitely the the thing that everyone's going to
- 25:12be wondering to see. And TJ Altelberger will be
- 25:14challenging those guys that keep growing.
- 25:17But I think the encouraging signs are you look at Dominic
- 25:19has played a, it feels like every week he's gotten better.
- 25:22Every week he's become more comfortable on the floor.
- 25:25You just look out how physical he is when it comes to like
- 25:27boxing out or just rumbling with opposing big men.
- 25:29He's not he's not the initiator. And as opposed to before, when
- 25:33he was still trying to figure out the tempo and the
- 25:35physicality, Jamarian Bateman is getting more and more
- 25:38comfortable. He's becoming known for giving
- 25:40that big shot off the bench, and if you can continue to be that
- 25:42offensive spark plug when things aren't going well and buckets
- 25:46are dropping, he can break the ice.
- 25:47That's just such a huge momentum boost.
- 25:49And then Nate Heise, we know that he's a hustler.
- 25:52We know that he brings the toughness plays in the defense.
- 25:54But if the buckets are going to start to drop and come
- 25:58consistently, it can only bode well.
- 26:00So for this bench, I do have faith in this bench to keep on
- 26:04contributing. But yeah, of course you're going
- 26:06to want to see more consistency out of them.
- 26:08But I think the upward trajectories of freshmen coming
- 26:11in, that's the most promising sound right there.
- 26:14You know, one thing I found interesting is we know that
- 26:17they're going to be staying in Utah.
- 26:18They got the next game coming up in Salt Lake City against the
- 26:22utes is the team building aspect of this, you know, being around
- 26:25for 3-4 days together and no going back home, going back to
- 26:29your apartment, going to classes, those kind of things
- 26:31and just all as a team in a way. This is also something you're
- 26:34going to see very similar in the NCAA tournament.
- 26:36Wherever the location is, you're going to be together.
- 26:39You know, for those 3-4 days when you're there, it's almost
- 26:41like a test run, if you will, for the NCAA tournament and, and
- 26:44what you want to do, scheduling, practice times, all like that.
- 26:47Feels like there's a lot of positives that could come out of
- 26:50this trip out there. Without a doubt and to have it
- 26:53at this point of the season, so late, just a few weeks before
- 26:57the Big 12 tournaments and the NCAA tournaments.
- 26:59And I know that this is something that also Burger and
- 27:02the players have been excited about the team building aspect.
- 27:04Of course, they got the big games to play and and the
- 27:07practices, but also just have this time where you're not
- 27:10around campus, you're you're alone in a foreign land, you're
- 27:13not surrounded. You're surrounded by just your
- 27:15teammates, you're spending a lot of time, their coaches, just no
- 27:18distractions. So I think that this is
- 27:20something that will be good for the team.
- 27:22We did joke around. We asked Jamari and if you know,
- 27:25you guys have got a couple of speechers planned or anything
- 27:27like that. But but he said TJ Altelberger
- 27:29doesn't like the injury to risk. So I'm sure they have some sort
- 27:32of activity. We it just won't be skiing.
- 27:34Maybe curling? That might be a little bit.
- 27:36Better, yeah. Yeah, Speaking of the Olympics,
- 27:39has Nate Heisey talked anything about how he compares to his
- 27:42sister? The I know the win over Houston
- 27:44was, you know, like that kind of shot only comes once in a
- 27:46lifetime, but winning a gold Olympic battle is is just as
- 27:49big, too. Yeah, we haven't gotten to speak
- 27:52to him since that. That was complete.
- 27:54But the one thing that just stood out was just how psyched
- 27:56he is for a sister. Just seems to be nothing but
- 27:59love. When he's not practicing, when
- 28:01he's not playing, he's keeping tabs.
- 28:03He said that his whole family is is in Milan right now for the
- 28:07Olympics, but they, I don't know, hopefully they got the
- 28:09catch for the Houston game. I know it was probably late over
- 28:11there, but what an exciting time for the Heisey family.
- 28:14Just a big week overall. Start out big with Nate's big
- 28:17shot. Now it ends big with the gold
- 28:19medal. Got an opportunity before they
- 28:21departed for Utah to talk with Jamari and Bateman.
- 28:24And we saw Speaking of that big shot and he's not shy.
- 28:27He's going to hoist it. If he's got a crack, he's going
- 28:29to fire. And we saw that maybe a couple
- 28:31of them ill advised on Monday night.
- 28:33But when he hit that big one, definitely change the equation
- 28:36on top of it. During that time, Milan was
- 28:38sitting at the check in the scores table.
- 28:40He was ready to check in. If there's a dead ball, Bateman
- 28:43was going to go out. But tell us a little bit more
- 28:45about about the freshman, you guys getting the chance to talk
- 28:47with him a little bit earlier this week, your thoughts on
- 28:49Jamari and Bateman and as a freshman and not an easy program
- 28:53to come in right away and make an impact.
- 28:55He's certainly been able to do that.
- 28:57Yeah, there's one thing that TJ also Burger has been really
- 29:00hammering home. This was even in preseason,
- 29:03early on in the season, he just mentioned how Jamar and Bateman
- 29:05had probably some of the best habits, work ethic, discipline
- 29:10that he's ever seen from an incoming freshman in his years
- 29:13of coaching. And you saw earlier on Jamar
- 29:16Bateman still had an adjustment period.
- 29:17You could kind of see the flashes.
- 29:19You can see the glimpses. But now I think you can see that
- 29:21hard work and that dedication is really starting to pay off.
- 29:24He's super confident right now. You mentioned a couple of those
- 29:27threes. Yeah, I thought that they were
- 29:28like NBA range, and I was a little surprised by some of
- 29:31those takes. But he even did that in the
- 29:32Kansas game as well. And I think this is just a guy
- 29:35who was just super confident in his work and his process.
- 29:38I think you mentioned also how Mom Televich is getting ready to
- 29:42check in. But when Bateman hit that first
- 29:43big three, it was kind of like, oh man, maybe you ride the hot
- 29:47hand. And TJ Alto Burger gave a little
- 29:51insight on that. And Montelvich said that he was
- 29:53OK with letting Bateman in because he hit that big one and
- 29:56then it paid off with that second one.
- 29:59But when you see that kind of trust in a freshman from TJ that
- 30:02that kind of praise from him, it definitely holds a lot of
- 30:05weight. And you see Bateman just
- 30:07continuing to deliver off the bench, especially in conference
- 30:09play. Yeah, I've been talking this
- 30:11week about how big I thought team chemistry is for for this
- 30:15team and, and seeing that kind of all right, well, let the guy
- 30:18who's hot right now, even though I'm shooting over 50% from
- 30:21three, let the guy who's hot stay in the game.
- 30:24But when you talk about how well Iowa State's been playing this
- 30:26season, obviously a phenomenal record at 23 and three, third in
- 30:30the Big 12, couple of rough losses, They're all on the road.
- 30:33What is your concern level when it comes to Iowa State not
- 30:36playing at home? Perfect at home.
- 30:37But unfortunately for all Cyclone fans out there, Big 12
- 30:41tournament, March Madness not going to be played in Hilton.
- 30:44Is that a concerning kind of piece of this Iowa State puzzle
- 30:46to you? I don't, I wouldn't say it's
- 30:49concerning just yet. I think that there are still
- 30:51some big opportunities on the road and and neutral sites to
- 30:54learn from or, or see how they react and respond.
- 30:57I think it's not uncommon to see a lot of really good teams be
- 31:01monsters, just bulldoze everybody at home.
- 31:03And then when you go on the road, it's just never easy,
- 31:06especially in the Big 12. Sometimes you get caught,
- 31:08sometimes it's just a tough thing to do in general.
- 31:11I mean, the Big 12 is just so loaded.
- 31:13The TCU one definitely stands out as just a Stinger, just an
- 31:16absolute stinker and the Cincinnati 81 as well.
- 31:19But I think overall Iowa State is pretty good and neutral and
- 31:22away like the records still pretty good.
- 31:24I think that this Utah trip will be very telling.
- 31:27How they compose themselves at McHale in Arizona will also be
- 31:31very telling, but I wouldn't say it's a red flag getter or sound
- 31:35the alarm type. It's just more so we'll learn so
- 31:38much more from this team in the next couple of weeks.
- 31:41The Kansas and Houston games were very exciting and those
- 31:43were definitely stating and wins in themselves.
- 31:46But now can they do it on the road against the March key
- 31:48matchups Like you mentioned, they did it against Purdue, but
- 31:51that was just so long ago that it's not that it's irrelevant.
- 31:54It just doesn't hold the same kind of umph that it used to
- 31:57back then. But if they can do it now coming
- 32:00down the stretch, you got to feel really good about their
- 32:02prospects in March. Eugene repay from the Des Moines
- 32:05Register Eugene, out of time for today.
- 32:07Appreciate yours. Time is always a little bit
- 32:10easier. So you got a 930 tip off.
- 32:12What does that mean for your deadline?
- 32:14As we come full circle, the beginning of our conversation.
- 32:17It means a lot of coffee, some Monster Energy drinks, TV and
- 32:21and hopefully a good game. But yeah, no, it's going to be a
- 32:24late 1 here in Iowa, but yeah, definitely going to be hustling
- 32:27and hauling. And I'm going to guess the
- 32:28sleeping in then on Sunday morning, no doubt.
- 32:30Eugene, as always, thank you for your time.
- 32:33Thank you guys so much, have a great weekend.
- 32:35Eugene Repay with the Des Moines Register, he joins us here on a
- 32:39Friday as we talk some Cyclones. So you're confident, you said
- 32:42earlier, Nick, about this matchup against BYU.
- 32:46What about that Utah game now? They're going to be a huge
- 32:49favorite in that one. It's not going to be a tight
- 32:51spread like we see in the BYU game.
- 32:54Utah, I know they beat West Virginia.
- 32:56I watched a bit of that. What was that Wednesday night?
- 32:58Maybe I I'm still baffled how that happened.
- 33:02Utah's just bad. And even if Utah was, you know,
- 33:05OK, I think it'd be a little bit more concerning.
- 33:08But that even ratchets up the importance of this BYU game cuz
- 33:11you're talking about getting a couple of quad a quad one
- 33:14victory and a quad 2V with the two Rd. games that you have even
- 33:16against the down Utah squad. So the opportunities there and
- 33:19we're talking about resume. We mentioned a game came down to
- 33:22Houston and Iowa State and the mock selection process that the
- 33:26media members went through yesterday.
- 33:27So they're right close to that line of getting a number one
- 33:29seed. Another quality victory like
- 33:32this on the road against BYU and then not stub your toe against
- 33:35Utah, That's going to go a really long way.
- 33:37Yeah, no, I agree. And when you look at Utah, I
- 33:40it's kind of amazing that they have ten wins.
- 33:42So like, how did they get that done?
- 33:45And you know, you have to show up for every single game in the
- 33:49Big 12. It's kind of how I'm looking at
- 33:50this. Like it'd be so easy to just
- 33:52look past Utah and see what they have down the stretch.
- 33:54But I know that Altoburger, if you remember back to the Purdue
- 33:57game, everyone was talking about how big this game was going to
- 33:59be. And Altoburger told me like, I'm
- 34:02literally, we're not going to answer any questions on that.
- 34:04We have Alcorn State. So I will answer questions on
- 34:06that. But if it's about Purdue,
- 34:08that'll come later. And so I know that Iowa State's
- 34:10going to be in the right mindset.
- 34:12It's just about you got to get it done.
- 34:14And that's what happens every single night in the Big 12.
- 34:17A huge opportunity. Like you said, I think this is a
- 34:19great point for Iowa State to go into that mindset of when you're
- 34:23on the road for back-to-back games and run a, you know, 6432
- 34:26or in the second weekend or whatever it is.
- 34:29It's a totally different feel than playing at home or even
- 34:32just A1 and one home and away. So huge opportunity for Iowa
- 34:35State this weekend to really make some moves, I feel like,
- 34:39towards what it would take to win a national title.
- 34:41That is Nick Marvitz joining us from Locked on Cyclones.
- 34:44When we come back on the other side, well, last week he was 2
- 34:47and O in his picks and that's a lot better than I could do.
- 34:50So he's going to help us out. I got some picks for you as well
- 34:52coming up in the basketball weekend picks presented by
- 34:55Circus Sports. That's next on Miller and Condon
- 34:57on the Iowa Sports Radio Network final segment of the week and
- 35:01final segment for us on Miller and Condon before Ken gets back
- 35:05from vacation. He'll be back with us on Monday.
- 35:08Nick Marvitz hanging out with me today.
- 35:10Trent Condon on the show and our final segment of the daytime for
- 35:14our picks of the day presented by Circus Sports.
- 35:16Got some plays for tonight, few for over the weekend that have
- 35:19definitely caught my attention. Nick, so you've been here on my
- 35:23bumper music coming back out of break as I figured out how to
- 35:26feed that down to you now. And we're figuring out all the
- 35:28kicks of everything with you working remotely with us here,
- 35:32these two times here over the last couple of weeks.
- 35:34But Nick, I'm an old guy. I like grunge music.
- 35:38I like late 80s, early 90s rap. That that's my era.
- 35:41What does a young man like you, What kind of music are you into?
- 35:44Oh. It's actually a good question.
- 35:46You know, I'm a big ACDC Metallica fan.
- 35:49I'll listen to, you know, I grew up on 2000's pop.
- 35:52Whatever's on the radio, then definitely a punk rock guy.
- 35:56It's honestly whatever's on. You grow up in the locker room,
- 35:59there's stuff that can't be played on the radio on there.
- 36:02So I mean, as long as music is playing, I'm probably honestly
- 36:05dancing. And then it's a little
- 36:07embarrassing sometimes. What you gotta do what you
- 36:08gotta. Do no doubt operate there with
- 36:10you, yes, Bop your head a little bit.
- 36:12I think you've been liking my music.
- 36:13Hold me in music right a little bit.
- 36:15Yes, I mean, we're on a video call here.
- 36:17I know we're listening over the radio, but you probably look
- 36:19over a few times, see me bop into it.
- 36:21Yeah, this is a good time here at Miller and.
- 36:23Con. That's right, yes.
- 36:24And when Ken's back then, yes, the music starts to go back a
- 36:27little bit more 70's rock, that's more Ken.
- 36:29So I play back and forth and we we hit a little bit of
- 36:32everything. So when you say early 2000's pop
- 36:36music, because another thing when you get older, everything
- 36:38starts to just kind of mush together.
- 36:41What kind of pop music are we talking about?
- 36:42Is this this is after like Backstreet Boys and Instinct.
- 36:45That was that was in the late 90s.
- 36:47So it's past that Lady Gaga that is that what we're looking for?
- 36:51Give me, give me some of the pop people of that era that I should
- 36:53remember. Gwen Stefani maybe, OK, Lady
- 36:57Gaga would have been like applause or whatever that was.
- 36:59I still listen to some Backstreet Boys from *NSYNC for
- 37:02sure. There you go.
- 37:03It's really, I usually just ask my my AIDJ to write some stuff
- 37:08for me and I'm just like whatever is on is on, you know?
- 37:11They nail it absolutely All right, let's get into picks.
- 37:14Let's get back to my specialty way to lose money and that's
- 37:17what I've been doing here with my gambling picks.
- 37:19So we will try to do better here.
- 37:22Got a lot of games spotlighted, but you had a couple that if you
- 37:24were at least interested in including one tonight, the
- 37:27Battle of Indiana, the Hoosiers and the Boilermakers.
- 37:30Purdue coming off the loss against Michigan, Indiana on the
- 37:33right side of the bubble currently.
- 37:35But this would be a huge, huge victory obviously for them.
- 37:38And Purdue not just lost to Iowa State and early Michigan.
- 37:41They had three losses at Mackie, A rarity certainly for that
- 37:45basketball program. What caught your eye with the
- 37:47Hoosiers and the Boilermakers? I just don't believe in Purdue.
- 37:51Honestly. I don't know if I love Indiana
- 37:54necessarily when you look at the matchup or whatever, but I
- 37:57believe that they have something that Purdue doesn't.
- 38:01And of course, when you look at like Indiana versus Purdue, the
- 38:03rivalry too. I do want to throw something out
- 38:06here. I know this isn't what we
- 38:06necessarily talked about, but I want this pick because I don't
- 38:09want you making. OK.
- 38:10I'm taking Iowa State over BYU, OK?
- 38:13I do you have you picked? Iowa State over TCU.
- 38:16It did not end well. So I'm taking Iowa State and the
- 38:18points I I predicted it was like a 13 point game.
- 38:21It should be no sweat for me, but I I just want to make sure I
- 38:25made that pick so that you couldn't give the clothes
- 38:28another loss. Jump aboard early?
- 38:30Absolutely. I got a couple.
- 38:33I'm playing Merrimack tonight. This is just a numbers play of
- 38:35the numbers that I use to say this is 1 to jump on.
- 38:38So I will do that -3 1/2 against Sienna also tonight.
- 38:42And I've been fading them way too much.
- 38:44The undefeated RedHawks of Miami of Ohio.
- 38:46I'm grabbing big guy State Bowling Green plus 8 1/2 tonight
- 38:50as this will be senior night for Miami of Ohio.
- 38:53It has to end. I saw a simulation, a team of
- 38:57the same profile, basically the same team, just run a
- 38:59simulation. How many teams, how many times a
- 39:01team like this would be undefeated against Miami of Ohio
- 39:04schedule and it was like one in 11,000.
- 39:07That's what we're talking about here with this 26 and O Miami of
- 39:10Ohio squad. I'm not taking Bowling Green to
- 39:13win and I'm not going to jump on the money line, though you can
- 39:15get better than three to 1. I'm going to grab the points.
- 39:17So get in the 8 1/2 with Bowling Green over the weekend.
- 39:21You've heard me say it throughout the course of the
- 39:23day. I think I was going to get
- 39:25pummeled. I think they're going to get
- 39:26absolutely drilled in Madison. When that line comes out,
- 39:29regardless of what it is, I am going to jump on the Badgers and
- 39:32do it. Probably double fisted.
- 39:34That'll probably be a 2 unit play for me.
- 39:36We're going to jump aboard a little bit more.
- 39:37We're not going to go crazy. I don't throw out and this is
- 39:40100 star play anything. We're not going to do that
- 39:43though. Maybe that would dig me out of
- 39:44the deficit that I've had here recently.
- 39:47That was absolutely though for me, a circle spot.
- 39:51I, I like Michigan, I don't love them.
- 39:54I mean, it's 2 1/2, so boy spread.
- 39:56Really not overly relevant in that one.
- 39:59Definitely going to be taking a peek at that.
- 40:01I'll see what happens there. Arizona, Houston with Pete out
- 40:05that point spread we mentioned earlier that was 5 1/2 didn't
- 40:07have a big lean on that. So it's going to be a great
- 40:10weekend at college basketball and incredibly important.
- 40:13NB as back started. They got going again last night
- 40:15after the All Star break. We got Olympics going on still
- 40:18as that'll culminate coming up this weekend.
- 40:20But a good week for college basketball to thrust themselves
- 40:24in. And you know, Nick, one of the
- 40:25great things about this season is it started all right, here
- 40:28comes, let's start with Boozer right at Duke.
- 40:30And it's a name that we know because of his dad.
- 40:32That definitely is of course, I mean, that's got to be a guy
- 40:35even for you that sort of make you feel a little bit old,
- 40:37right, when you see Boozers kids out there now playing at Duke.
- 40:40But you have that component. This freshman class has been so
- 40:44incredible. But the storylines of college
- 40:46basketball, coupled with all the negative stories that are
- 40:49happening in the NBA and the continued tanking, it feels like
- 40:52there's a real opportunity for college basketball.
- 40:55Look, it's not going to be what it once was, just a different
- 40:57environment we're talking about and guys sticking around for 3-4
- 41:00years. But it feels like college
- 41:02basketball this season has a big chance of gaining even more than
- 41:06national spotlight. I would argue, and I guess I
- 41:09don't know if this is something you've talked about or, or
- 41:11whatever, I would argue the college product is better than
- 41:14the NBA product. Just for me, when you look at
- 41:16what, yeah, when you look at night in, night out, what the
- 41:18NBA looks like is, is so and so playing and what's the All Star?
- 41:22What's like that doesn't happen in college other than for one
- 41:26team, basically for Kansas, that's literally the only team
- 41:29that I can think of where it's not.
- 41:31You know what you're getting. And so I'm 100% with you.
- 41:34I I prefer watching the college ball.
- 41:37And I think that that reigns true for both football and
- 41:39basketball. So I don't know if maybe I'm I'm
- 41:40biased, but yeah, man, this is going to be a phenomenal weekend
- 41:43of games. We have the US hockey team,
- 41:46they're getting ready to take the ice. 210 will be the puck
- 41:50drop. That one against Slovakia, if
- 41:52you missed it earlier, Canada came back and got that and got
- 41:55it done. Do you know offhand when the
- 41:57gold medal match, when the time is actually going to be for that
- 42:01one? For the women or no, the men?
- 42:04The men, yeah, I don't. Off the top of my head, I was.
- 42:08Oh, I found my quick fingers. Sunday morning, Sunday morning
- 42:12at 8:10 AM, I'm coming off of state wrestling, which is a
- 42:18long, long night on Saturday. Then we got the Iowa State game
- 42:21that is going to go until midnight at best, at least,
- 42:25right? And we'll probably get triple
- 42:26overtime on top of it. I'm sure that's going to happen,
- 42:29so we're going to have to do it. It's going to be a lot of
- 42:31coffee, a lot of caffeine, but we'll make it happen.
- 42:33US though, they got to finish it off here today against Slovakia
- 42:37coming up with the puck drop a little bit later.
- 42:39No, I got that wrong. That was Eastern 710 central.
- 42:42Oh, good God. All right, get the alarm going.
- 42:45Here we go. Well, Nick, hey enjoyed this so
- 42:48much. Thank you so much for joining us
- 42:50here a couple of times these last two weeks.
- 42:52Yeah, man, thanks for having me. I'm, I'm super excited to keep
- 42:55talking Iowa State every chance I get here, so thank you.
- 42:58You can catch Nick daily Locked on Cyclones on YouTube.
- 43:03Wherever your podcast is, you can find him there each and
- 43:06every day talking Cyclones. I do the same with Locked on
- 43:09Hawkeyes coming up later this evening.
- 43:11I'll be back on the airwaves here it is the semi final round
- 43:14of state wrestling. I got you covered on that.
- 43:17And then tomorrow night here on KXNO with the state finals at
- 43:205:30, that'll do it for today and for the week for us back at
- 43:25it on Monday. Coming up next off the bench
- 43:27with Lucas.
