Transcript
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: I welcome the show others receiving votes the overreaction Sunday edition, uh, pap 40 joined as always by my sports illustrated colleagues, Brian Fisher and Kevin Swenney and gentlemen, I guess I would say Saturday and away was a savior job Saturday or at least it'll elongate your job for a couple of guys make your job look more manageable perhaps salvageable.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: For some other guys not so much there.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: There were some hot seat coaches that stay on the hot seat and then a few who at least improve their standing will decide how much as we go through this We're also going to see if we can sort out the one-loss teams in the SEC really hard to do.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: I went and watched Missouri one-loss Missouri hang a very big loss on Florida There's seven one-loss teams I believe now in that conference piled up
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: We will talk about the the remarkable events in Fort Collins and in Boulder as the state of Colorado like goes off the rails.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_00]: So plenty to get to here gentlemen let's start with.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: Let's start with with a couple of guys several guys that the one games that felt like might be the sign of a turn corner, or at least something that's going to take the heat off a little bit.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: And we you guys tell me job saved.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: job of health doesn't really matter that much.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go with Mike Norvelle for to stay.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: They thunked Virginia.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: And this felt like one of the first times in a long time that Florida State won a game that actually may help resonate.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: He would be a very expensive firing.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: at a school that doesn't have a lot of money.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think a lot of the fans are already checked out on him, but still one two games in the real Central Arkansas doesn't count but Virginia, which played in the ACC Championship game last year.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: They beat 38 to 7 on Saturday.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: uh, their losses are to Alabama and SMU, the SMU loss was not good.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: SMU is not that great and they were at home and they were like plus three turnover and still lost.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: But they're sitting at three and two, they're hitting a really hard part of the schedule.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: Brian, how much did Florida State Wampan on Virginia help mark McNorbell?
- 2:40[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was huge, you know, and I think Mike is in an interesting spot where, you know, like the school does not want to pay the massive buyout, but by any stretch of the imagination.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_02]: So the more that he can help himself out, it really does help Florida state out and look, you know, you do look at their schedule and you want to play the schedule game and yet this win over Virginia to to the docket, you know, that game against Louisville.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_02]: next week.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_02]: That is winnable, based on what we've seen from the Cardinals recently.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you can probably mark the Miami game, especially in Miami as a loss, but Climpson, winnable, BC, winnable, pit now, given Mason Hinesho's is out, that's winnable.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_02]: In C-State, that is a winnable game now.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_02]: And maybe you can throw the Florida game, it's a rivalry game, of course, into the year you never know what's going to happen there.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe not only making a bowl for Mike Norville, you're talking about maybe seven, eight, nine wins.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, this is a massive, I think one of those games that really can flip a season, that might be what we saw out of the nose, and that's going to be a huge knowledge for Mike Norville, but really for Florida State.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_02]: They want to kind of restructure their athletic department.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_02]: Find a new athletic director, first and foremost, to actually make a decision on Mike Norvelle.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_02]: I think that that went over Virginia as convincing as it was, is gonna go a long ways to possibly keeping him there, for at least another season in teleassie.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: It was definitely a good weekend for Mike Karel.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: There's no question, right?
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: Between, to look as good as they did to dominate a game, to be like physically overwhelming in a game, I think is a great sign for Florida State.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's been a real knock on them is that they just haven't had the dudes up front on either side of the ball and to see them grow.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: I think especially on the offensive line, that felt like a weakness of their football team in those first couple games of the year.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: It seems like it's turned a corner that's that's a really nice sign and as you said Brian the schedule has opened up a little bit It's not easy by any stretch, but you know, they got some breaks here with with the high-endial injury with where clumps ands at with the way little of a looks and and with with Lincoln King holds a little banged up to You know, I think you'll play, but it may be not quite himself like that.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: Those are all big deals and I think if you came into the year and he said Florida state has a chance to win eight football games
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you would have said, yeah, like, no rails, almost definitely surviving back, right?
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: And so, yeah, maybe, you know, look, I think it will never feel comfortable for for for for for for for Mike this year because of where the money is and how much discontent there is within that van base.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: But if they can build some momentum, bring back Chroma who is a stud at running back,
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: There's there's reasons for optimism right now that probably didn't exist a couple of weeks ago and that that's a big time big time step in the direction if you might know.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: You guys are more optimistic than I am here a little bit I it's over reaction Sunday and and you're swinging to the positive I'm still.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: I'm still in wait and see mode.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: I was a great win, no doubt about it.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: And they did just roll it up on the ground 280 yards.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: They're so rushing, acid Daniels ran for a bunch.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: So they, that was significant.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: As you noted, their offensive line had not been considered good.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: So their offensive clicking is playing better.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: But I got to see this play out.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: I got to see him win some road games.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's very Louisville.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: disappointing right now, but still you're on the road there Miami.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: I would say no chance rivalry games, so maybe a sliver of a chance.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see about Clemson BC fine pit.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: Even without high-shell, I still think I saw a team on the road and see state toss up Florida.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: I saw Florida get pummeled in person.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: I still think they're a pretty good team, so
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: If they, if they can get to eight, then we're talking.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_00]: Seven, I don't know, we have a discussion, six.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure there's enough support for that, but is there enough money to do something about it?
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see on Mike Norvelle, I'd say we're split there, more optimism from you two than from me.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: David Randa at Baylor, this guy, talk about a survivor.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: There's been multiple years when we thought David Randa may get fired.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: And he has not yet in the bears are four and one this season and absolutely obliterated, Arizona State on the road Saturday.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: None of their wins previously really resonated very much.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: this time your first true red game of the year and you go to Arizona State and absolutely smoke him 55 to 19 DJ lagway looked like a guy he can sometimes look like in that game 360 yards passing four touchdowns that one that jumped out to me and this is another one you can play the schedule game and big 12 who knows a lot of toss ups in there
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: Um, they, they got a week off and then they got TCU coming to Waco.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: They're at Kansas.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: They're at UC F. I was state.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: I could see him winning all of those.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: That if you win all four of those and you're you've got eight wins and then you're coming down the stretch against BYU.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Tech Houston.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: That that could be really interesting.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: So I am I'm probably a little more optimistic about a Randa than I was about Norville.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: What do you guys think Kevin?
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, they're very optimistic based on the schedule, very optimistic based on how they're playing.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: Um, lagways been great and, you know, the Joe Clanderman higher at defense coordinator.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: So the 110th rank defense and SP plus last year, they're top 30 defense right now and playing really well.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_01]: I was very impressed with how they looked last night, obviously, but, you know, look there, what six inches from being five and
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that that that that that Auburn finish was as close as it could have been and you think about how much that result might mean later in the year for for bailer if they're in the playoff conversation, which is not out of the realm of possibility with how wide open the big 12 is with how well G to DJ live waste playing and with how open up the schedule is so yeah, if I'm Dave Miranda I'm walking around with quite a bit of confidence here at least at least throughout the month of October right now.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, at least for now because you do look at that schedule and you look at the end of it and you say you see BYU you see Texas tech and you see Houston three right folks right there and that's where you say all right if you end up losing three straight in the year maybe things are a little bit more precarious than they are right now, but I mean that was a statement of intent kind of win you had Arizona state one of the
- 9:24[SPEAKER_02]: One of the teams I think that was in the running before this week to possibly be that team opposite of BYU, you know, to make it to our, in turn, for the big, big 12 championship game, and it wasn't just just a defense.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_02]: There was everything clicking on both sides of the ball.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that those give them optimism going into a rivalry game against TCU, going and it gets a very winnable November slate before they do meet those regular opponents.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_02]: You know, look, you know, this is a team that I don't think you're, you know, anybody's taking them in terms of the big 12 race truly seriously, but they're probably going to have to be a factor in terms of who is actually going to make it to our link to give who they played down the stretch.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, Kudos to Dave or Annie, he was a lot more confident.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_02]: I think going into the year about this, this, this, this crew, but you know, it needed a little bit of time to to mesh and we saw a proof positive there against the sundettles.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: All right, Dave Doran, North Carolina State, got the big home win against Louisville there.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: It was back and forth, but really pretty well controlled the game.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_00]: That's their first significant win of the season.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: Appstate, not a bad win, Richmond, nobody cares.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_00]: They obviously, they started with a brutal performance against Virginia and then gave away the game against Vanderbilt.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought the way the Vanderbilt game
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: cast a cloud over the rest of the year, but it doesn't look like that's happening.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: So Kudos to the Wolf Pack for bouncing back for circling the wagons, if you will, and coming back and getting a good wind there, Brian, where would you say, what does this do for Doran?
- 10:59[SPEAKER_02]: You know, he's one of those coaches where it seems like, you know, he can just can't keep getting away with it.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_02]: And he just ends up doing that.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_02]: Like that.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_02]: That is Dave the Dave door and experience, you know, in a nutshell, you know, you lose a game you're not supposed to.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_02]: And then you run off a couple of wins in a row that people weren't expecting.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, you wind up eight and four nine and three, you know, seven to five and we roll on over to the next year.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_02]: And that just kind of seems like where what the Wolf back are, you know, under him.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_02]: And maybe that does lead to maybe a mutual parting of the ways at the end of the year.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_02]: in terms of, hey, let's just, let's try something new on both sides.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe that is ultimately where the Wolf back and in Dave end up landing.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, XEGA Bailey played a little bit better, certainly the defense outside of a few big plays that they allowed the Louisville, you know, looked and proven.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, this is the more complete NC State team that I think we expected coming into the year.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_02]: We really haven't seen it.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_02]: We really haven't seen four quarters from them, but Kudos to Dave, I think this was a massive win, especially for the program, just to kind of at home in that environment.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_02]: I think that was big for not only his job security, but I think to give the confidence to his team moving forward in ACC play, where it seems like every game, probably he's going to be much more of a toss up moving forward.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_01]: I think the three games just circle are the three in-state matchups that they still have in the ACC Slate, right?
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: You have Wake Next Week, who, by the way, Jake Dicker, should be in the National Cochlear Conversation.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I've done an unbelievable job without good day look.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_01]: They'd be the break-saw for Stanford yesterday, but that's a very important game at Carter Finley.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like, the game, like, if you want to stick, you probably need to have it if you're Dave Doran.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: You have Duke a couple weeks later.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: Also at home, this is not a great duke team, but it's a better duke team than I think we expected.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: Again, if you're in see stay, you're trying to, you're trying to hang on.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: That's really important.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_01]: And then you close the year at Carolina and could what could be a, uh, I could be quite the hot seatball between him and Chapel Bill.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_01]: See how that one ships up.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: But I think you want to out of three of those at minimum to feel feel good about yourself your day going.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and two out of three is going to be tough.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think the way the way wake looks and the way Duke is played.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: Now, you know, we'll see health and momentum and all those sort of things.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: But, I mean, wake, wake sports is good and Duke is very, very solid.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_00]: It looks like the kind of team that will not beat itself.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_00]: than who knows with North Carolina.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_00]: But yes, the tobacco road, pecking order and hierarchy there, could be really important.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_00]: Because you don't want to slip down and be third or fourth out of those four.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: So where does NC State end up in that?
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, what's the level?
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: Is there a level of fatigue between Dorn and the fans where we're just like, OK, we've been doing this for a long time do we need to keep going or not?
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: Luke fickle who got his first big win last week added on to it this week taking care of business at home beating Michigan State by four touchdowns to go on the road and beat Penn State that got everybody fired up then you come back home and just clean the clocks of the Spartans.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: And all of a sudden, they're sitting there for one and they're one losses to Notre Dame.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: And it wasn't like a absolute colossal mismatch of again.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: So I think you're feeling pretty good.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: If you're fickle and if you're Wisconsin, now, boy, there's some schedule left coming up here.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: You see L.A. on the road, USC at Iowa are the next three.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: After that, some winnable games.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: But it's intriguing to me to think
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if they do well in Los Angeles, they got a week off and then they're at UCLA on the 17th, that game could have some repercussions in terms of the big 10 race.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: So a lot to be watching out there, Kevin, what's your feelings on where a fickle stands?
- 14:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this has been the start they needed.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_01]: A ton of confidence, I think they're playing with now and Joseph's been really good of the late.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: That being said, like,
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: winning at Penn State felt a lot bigger than it does right now with how Penn State got absolutely destroyed by Northwestern and Friday night.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_01]: I think Northwestern is a good football team.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about this, currency, any things, Northwestern is a good football team.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of people seem to think that the Wildcats are pretty darn good, but yeah, I mean, if we swap out Penn State's branding for a big ten also ran, maybe this doesn't feel quite as optimistic as it probably does right now.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_02]: Well, and hosting USC, I mean, that is like the, you know, the feelings and, and, you know, hot seat talk coming in and around that one is going to be massive really on both sides.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_02]: And I, I'm just curious, you know, as good as start as this is, can, can you keep running gold Joseph like that, like game after game after game?
- 15:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, when you are playing,
- 15:42[SPEAKER_02]: Iowa and then you got Purdue and you got Minnesota some of these tough tougher defenses that you know they're just gonna load up in the box like yeah I know Bob Chesney he is like all right we we're not gonna let this guys legs be that's like that is going to be the keys going into this week you know can't can they keep this up
- 15:58[SPEAKER_02]: You know, if it were the depths, you know, for the badgers, that's really my big question going in to this kind of big ten west type of schedule that they're going to have.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_02]: And yes, it certainly, you know, looks good to where you could win eight nine games, but actually getting over the line, especially as you've gotten kind of the hopes up of the fan base, can you actually rise up and meet those.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's going to be key for Luke football.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_02]: And I think.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_02]: I think that you a see game.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_02]: That's going to be hinge a lot on the season and kind of where the fan base is ultimately going to jump on in and say, let's let's bring them back.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_02]: Let's keep investing in this roster.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_02]: Let's let's do this again next year.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's going to be a big key game on the comfort slate coming up.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I see Colton Joseph right now, the usage is manageable.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_00]: He's average in 10 carries a game.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: He was average in 18 or 20.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_00]: I might be a little more concerned.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: They've opt it.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_00]: He's ran 13 in each of the two big 10 games.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_00]: 13 for 141 on the ground for your quarterback.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_00]: very good against Michigan State.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, sustain like, do you want to carry in 20 game?
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: No, but do you want to tend to 15 absolutely?
- 17:03[SPEAKER_00]: And I think you can do that.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_00]: And then play good defense around and behind them.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_00]: So then the defense has been pretty darn good after falling behind 17 to nothing to Penn State.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_00]: They haven't given up a touchdown in the second half against Penn State or the entire gaming against Michigan State.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_00]: So starting to look a little more like a loop fickle
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: Speaking of that U.S.C.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: Wisconsin game on October 24th, U.S.C., Lincoln Riley came back from an inglorious loss to Oregon, fell behind by double digits to Washington at home, then the Trojan's rallied and won.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: Um, maybe not in overpowering fashion, but the key word is one, and they're sitting there at five and one, because they've played, they started early, and uh, how are we feeling about Lincoln Riley?
- 18:04[SPEAKER_00]: I'm curious Brian, uh, your thoughts on, on where he stands.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I almost think he, you know, his hot seat got turned up even worse, you know, even after win, you know, just the way you see played like it was the same old things that we've not only saw his Oregon, but really you've seen throughout his tenure, right, you know, penalties, you know, back breaking penalties, but it in particular bad tackling just really a lack of defense.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that that one touch down Washington head in the second half is like they are pushing the guy straight to the end zone, you know, that was incredible.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_02]: Like, you know, like you sort of pull your hair and you know, it was homecoming, you know, that week for USC.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_02]: So like you got a lot of alums coming into town, a lot of big boosters, you know, coming to watch the game, you know, expecting, you know, see our Washington that kind of came in limping, you know,
- 18:50[SPEAKER_02]: to the Coliseum.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_02]: And then they had to take a two touchdown lead and give credit to the USC players for coming back.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_02]: But like this is not in any way the kind of promise land that Lincoln was advertising for this season saying, all right, we've got alignment.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_02]: We've got the players.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to have a better defense.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_02]: None of that is showing up so far.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_02]: It wasn't just last week against Oregon.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_02]: It was this week against Washington.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that the Wisconsin game taken a long trip to Penn State in the White Out environment, no less like even
- 19:18[SPEAKER_02]: as bad as Penn State is.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_02]: We all know that that that beaver stadium environment.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_02]: It's it's I think still questionable there for Lincoln Riley because this is a team that's nowhere playing up to their potential and nowhere playing up to their talent that they have on hand and you add on to that just kind of the middle of the stakes like this is just the same old story and I think that's what USC fans are ultimately really frustrated about what with him and this program.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't know how you came away from yesterday feeling overly confident that they're certainly not competing with Ohio State or Indiana, but that they're beating UCLA, that they're beating Penn State and white out, that they're winning at Wisconsin and they probably need.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_01]: All three of those to feel good about Lincoln's future, right?
- 20:03[SPEAKER_01]: Ignore Ohio's dating or Indiana, like, yeah, you better win the other ones.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't see that happening right now.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe I'll be proven wrong.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_01]: But I did not think that was at a performance that inspired much of any competence.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_00]: No, really all it did was avoid disaster.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, you lose and it's really bad.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_00]: You win and at least you can turn the page and say, okay, we better improve for the back half of this schedule because it's hard and we're not very good at this point.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: The one, yes, the clip that Brown was referring to a pass that lived to a tight end from Washington where
- 20:36[SPEAKER_00]: The USC defenders, it really did look like they're playing two hand touch.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_00]: Like if we just touch him, he's down, right?
- 20:43[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, no, he's just going to roll on for a touchdown.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, just truly pathetic.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: And in a play that does seem emblematic of the lack of toughness that USC has played with kind of throughout Riley's tenure there.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_00]: So to me determine there, nobody's I think coming up and saying Lincoln turned things around with that win.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_00]: One more.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_00]: on the, on the, on the winning side, Matt rule Nebraska, they absolutely bludgeoned Maryland, but what else should you do to Maryland?
- 21:18[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, they actually were behind Maryland, trailed Maryland for a while, and then came back at one.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: They're five and oh.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_00]: they have beaten nobody.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_00]: They beat them all fairly convincingly, but they beat Ohio by 28.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_00]: They beat falling green by 49.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_00]: They beat North Dakota by 27.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_00]: They beat Michigan State.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: It was not good by 18.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_00]: And they beat Maryland by 25.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_00]: Kevin, your thoughts, where does Link, I'm sorry, Matt rules stand.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_00]: Midway here.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think he feels pretty good about where they're at.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_01]: That was not a good performance yesterday, especially in the first half, defensively, and Kalandra missed a ton of throws.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it was it was jarring to watch how far off he was.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_01]: I watched, I ended up watching like a weird amount of that football game just with the way schedule ended up working out.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_01]: And it was like, oh my god, receive a running wide open that Anthony Kalandri and Mrs. by 70 yards.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_01]: And then the next play, it's like 3rd and 13.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_01]: And here goes Kalandri is scrambling and spinning is way to a first down.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_01]: It was it was quite the show.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_01]: Much easier show to to pull off against Maryland's defense than it will be against Indiana.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_01]: So look, I think you feel confident in that being said, I mean, yeah.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: I was impressed when they blew out Michigan State.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: Michigan State looks like it does.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they've got a lot to prove with the next three weeks in Indiana or again, Washington.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_01]: See if they can win one of those.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: If you Washington at home, be six and two at the November turn, that would be a nice step with a manageable close to the year.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, that's these realistic like eight and four for Nebraska this year with a harder schedule than they they had you last year.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: That would be a nice step, I think, for marital.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_02]: It would be a nice step and the thing about this team is it almost seems like they sleep walk for, you know, quarter, quarter and a half and they just need to spark, you know, kind of get them going and then they kind of wake up and say, all right, we're actually playing a game, you know, they got the pick six that gets Maryland that kind of, you know, turn the tables and really got them going this past week and, you know, even at Ohio in the opener, you know, that was a close game into the second half and then they started to kind of pull away late.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just going to be curious.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think Matt rules in any, like, particular danger to get ax given the where his enough, the number on his buyout and the fact that they're doing stadium renovations and and a whole bunch of stuff there in Nebraska, but like, I do wonder is this going to be a little bit of an empty calorie season, you know, like if you don't end up beating,
- 23:36[SPEAKER_02]: an Indiana or an Oregon or, you know, threatening Ohio State later in the year, you know, possibly being an Iowa late.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I think he's going to have to get one of those kind of marquee wins to really get the fan base.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_02]: I think back around him and I'm not sure that he has the talent.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_02]: But in terms of the overall roster and anti-clandry like that's like you shake up your dice and you're going to be surprised by whatever you roll at this point, given how loose with the football he is at times.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_02]: So it's probably going to be an entertaining season, probably a quality solid solid year for the Huskers, but
- 24:10[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think for Matt Ruel, you know, to really say momentum is going to be behind him.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to have to knock off one of those highly ranked opponents that still left on the pocket.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm not quite sure that based on what we've seen so far, that's and we're asking it has those four quarters to kind of pull that off, you know, moving forward.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think empty calories is the way I would describe the entire Matt Ruel tenure so far.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_00]: They've beaten a lot of teams that
- 24:36[SPEAKER_00]: they should beat, they don't win the big games, sometimes they lose games they should win and they haven't been good in close games.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_00]: Now they haven't played close games yet this year.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: So we don't can't put that yardstick on them, per se.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: But the Indiana game provides a great yardstick because one of the things that truly reinforced the Kurt Signetti means business was when he beat Nebraska 56 to seven,
- 25:06[SPEAKER_00]: uh at indiana and so two years later now they go to Lincoln and hey Lincoln they'll get some atmosphere they will get it going there 80,000 people uh but we'll see whether the team gives them enough to get excited about and defensively they look indiana's offence is a wagon defensively they can they kind of still wax and wain a little bit but they got two backs
- 25:29[SPEAKER_00]: two receivers in a quarterback who can absolutely go and that's a lot to stop.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_00]: So yes, Indiana, Oregon or Ohio State Iowa feel like Matt needs to win at least one.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying he's going to get fired if he doesn't, but if you want the fans to actually buy in, uh, heading into next year.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_00]: All right, some guys who did not help themselves on the hot seat.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_00]: got to start with poor Shane Beamer at South Carolina, where they have, this season they have specialized in getting leads, getting people excited, and then falling apart.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_00]: And this was happened again, Kentucky rallies, beat some 35, 34 in overtime.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_00]: I believe it has passed, they have 17, nothing I think in that game.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_00]: They led Alabama.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_00]: They led Mississippi State.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_00]: They lost three of them defense.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_00]: Not very good right now South Carolina.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_00]: Brian, where do you think Shane, Pemer stands?
- 26:28[SPEAKER_00]: They are two and three and the schedule ain't easy.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_02]: Well, to the point where I was like worried that I might be in transit on Sunday and get in the notification that maybe the school is going to pull the trigger.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_02]: Like I do think the frustration in that fan base is very palpable and he's playing for an AD that didn't hire him.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_02]: And as much as we talk about that, the buyouts, like it's not the most prohibitive buyout and for an SEC school at this point.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_02]: and look, you know, in their last six SEC games, did not lead against Alabama recently.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_02]: They blown leads of 22, 14, 7, nothing, 30 to three, 16 to nothing and 17 to nothing.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_02]: And then those last two this year.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_02]: So like it's, it's a thing now in terms of blowing these big leads.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_02]: for Shane Bieber.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_02]: And so, as much as you like to say, you know, yes, we finally saw a little more of the Lenore sellers that we expected to see this season, you know, against Kentucky, you know, it's just been one thing after another, you know, they're in Colombia.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_02]: And I think if, you know, it would be even worse, you know, if clubs have actually got their act together,
- 27:30[SPEAKER_02]: And we're moving in the right directions so that at least they could point across the way and say, well, you know, it's more of a statewide thing at this point in South Carolina, but I don't think it helps them at all, you know, in terms of blowing these big leads, it's just the same old show time after time and I think that's that's going to wear on a fan base and that's going to wear in a fan base when it comes to giving for an eye on giving for that roster moving forward.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_02]: when when the guys like one of our sellers and Dylan Sturdard are off to the NFL.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_02]: So like what is the plan going to be moving forward to actually get the program back on track where you can be a solid even mid tier SSC team like I don't know and I think that's going to be a big question.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_02]: I think facing Shane and the game Cox moving forward against a pretty brutal schedule coming up.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, there's a lot you can say, but at the core of it, the issue for Shane Beamer is that he has lost at home to Mississippi State in Kentucky, Kentucky has first year at coach.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I have a hard time believing there will ever be a time in the SEC, where losing at home to Mississippi State in Kentucky will not be a good way to be on the very, very, very, very hot seed.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_00]: No, that's not out.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_00]: I talked about it last week.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_00]: I think that Kentucky South Carolina tends to be a latter game.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_00]: You win and your season is pretty good.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: You lose.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's probably not very good.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_00]: And to lose that one, especially in the fashion that they did, that's rough.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_00]: And then, yes, you also lose in Columbia to Mississippi State and.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_00]: I am looking other than Arkansas and even that one's on the road.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure there'll be favored in another game.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_00]: Texas A&M may be depending on the state of the Aggies when they come to Columbia on November 7th, but there is not a lot of obvious wins.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_00]: There are minus six turnover margin so far this year.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_00]: They, you know, they're mistake prone.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_00]: They don't make plays in the clutch.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_00]: Not a good combination.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_00]: All right, two guys, you kind of look at them in tandem because I look at their schools in tandem, Maryland and Rutgers who joined the big tent at the same time to the big tents everlasting regret other than cable subscriptions and Mike Locksley and Greg Shiano, both of whom lost again.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_00]: It was Locksley did get, they led.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_00]: Which is a big thing with locks as Kevin's pointed out that one of his rallying cries at big 10 media days in July was, hey, we let 11 of the 12 games last year.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's great.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_00]: That's nice.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_00]: They let this one, too.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_00]: They lost.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_00]: And she, you know, I'm not shocked at all that Rutgers lost and lost handily to Indiana.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_00]: But where do we think these two guys stand, Ryan?
- 30:19[SPEAKER_02]: probably both on the way out's, you know, look, especially with locks.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, 17 and 50, 17 and 50 and big 10 play is Mike locksley and you don't see it getting any better any time soon, like just the amount of uncompetitive losses amongst them.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_02]: And I think this is, you know, one of those jobs where you could probably if you're, you know, up and coming coach can look at it pretty attractively.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_02]: You know, in terms of, yes, you know, your roster's not going to be necessarily like, super high in in terms of the victim, but it's going to be somewhat competitive.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_02]: And you want there's a lot of winnable games, you know, in the in the big ten there for the taking, Michael Oxley is not taking any of them, certainly with the Turks and in recent years, I mean, he's won.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_02]: two big-ton games in the last three seasons, like that's such as not going to cut it.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_02]: And I think it's more of a win, not if it's kind of scenario there in the college park.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I think the same property applies further up at Rutgers as well.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_02]: It's just like at some point, especially given how ambitious these 80s, these presence, these boards are at this point, you know, for a lot of these big-ton schools, like it's
- 31:22[SPEAKER_02]: like, you know, put up or shut up time and that need those coaches are getting the kind of wins that need they need to really cool things off for their fan bases.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, man, there's a lot of excitement in college park this weekend because last week there was all these posts about how tickets were going for $1.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_01]: I've just checked a couple of secondary markets.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_01]: There's nothing cheaper than six.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_01]: Whoa, there's been a 600% increase in ticket prices for retro versus Maryland.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know, these programs might be
- 31:52[SPEAKER_00]: $6 to get in for that game.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's October 17th.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_00]: Rutgers has the week off to think and they can spend two weeks preparing for Maryland.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_00]: Just imagine what to take it price is.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_02]: It is their Super Bowl.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it is their Super Bowl.
- 32:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's the only game left that you may win.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_00]: So look at it that way.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_00]: And that, you know, we often look at the open date.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, that's when the trigger's gonna get pulled.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_00]: So far, this is Sunday afternoon at 246 p.m. Eastern, Greg Siano still has his job.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_00]: My clocks Lee, who doesn't have an open date, but the he still has his as well.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_00]: All right, one other coach who I don't believe is on the hot seat in terms of tangible job insecurity with his athletic director.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_00]: But with the fan base,
- 32:40[SPEAKER_00]: You were there, Brian.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_00]: Devosweeney, Death Valley, another loss, handily, lost, handily, four touchdowns to Miami.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_00]: Devos still tried to spin it like, oh, they're gonna be a factor in the ACC race.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_00]: What do we make out of it?
- 32:57[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it was amazing, like, you know, it's probably, you know, it's pushing almost one o'clock at the time, dabble actually finishes up, you know, it's press conference for for a 730 PM tick, you know, on top of being a four hour game.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_02]: But that's neither here nor there.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_02]: And I think just.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_02]: like what are you like he they they've scored 30 points against a power for opponent you know three times in the last three years you know like there's just no offense that the offensive development is not there and I feel like it was getting gas lit there in the press conference like that was thinking all right we we got young guys but we're so close.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_02]: You're still an ACC contender, you know, and I'm this kind of kind of what I wrote about my calm, like I mean, that's that's delusional, like that that to me would be a bigger red flag for that fan base for that administration at this point to say he still thinks we're that close, you know, when you get blown out by four touchdowns against a team that that is the measuring sick right now.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_02]: Miami is the measuring stick.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_02]: You're not even anywhere close to him.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_02]: You're not anywhere close to the LSU's of the world.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and that's who Clemson thinks is their peer institutions right now.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_02]: And on the field, they're nowhere near that.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_02]: And look, they have a pretty soft schedule, not only in terms of the AC, like, you know, they're going to have a week off, they're going to play Charleston Southern or, you know, some other, you know, some about type of school and like, yeah, they'll get a win, but what where's the progress?
- 34:13[SPEAKER_02]: you know, out of this team.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_02]: And I think there's real frustration amongst the fanbase that dabble is just not listening and not opening his eyes to what he's seeing on the field.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_02]: You know, was there were there a couple plays where they could have made the score a little bit closer?
- 34:26[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_02]: But in no, there was not a point at any time throughout that 60 minutes where I thought you know what comes in as a chance of this one.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_02]: Like from the opening, from the opening play because Miami took their their first offensive play all the way to the house on
- 34:40[SPEAKER_02]: play it like this this was a game that was completely one-sided and you know Miami after words I mean Mario Chris was like yeah you know you know they they've probably got two or three you know first time picks eventually you know and maybe it doesn't you know guys that might go to the pros they they had nine guys drafted last year and they won seven games like that you know this is this a big issue there I think for Clemson and really for the ACC because they need
- 35:03[SPEAKER_02]: They program like Clemson for the state of the conference in general, you know, to be one of those teams that's regularly Continuing for the conference will play off, but they are they are nowhere near that based on what I saw really and not only this game, but Is there for the opener against LSU this is a team that will be lucky to win I think seven seven games at this point
- 35:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, delusional is probably the right way to put it.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_01]: And it's scary that it would be the most scary thing.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_01]: And quite frankly, it's scary that there's enough winnable games out there that maybe there won't be insane pressure to shake it all up, right?
- 35:35[SPEAKER_01]: And because they sort of randomly stole that North Carolina game where they were getting clearly outplayed before the Randallet.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_01]: And then they'd want to add Cal and Cal was, I mean,
- 35:43[SPEAKER_01]: That is an disaster of a football team right now and like this you know Charleston Southern.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_01]: All right like Syracuse not very good Georgia Tech disaster of a football team right now like South Carolina might be an interim coach situation and again like I don't know maybe they are winning seven right games and that might be worse it like that may not be the best outcome for Clemson because
- 36:05[SPEAKER_01]: anything that continues to feed this beast of delusion that we're not that far away and hey, we're knocking on the door.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no, you're extremely far away, talent.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_01]: Like, yeah, there is a chasm between you and the teams you want to play against.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely, I mean, that they play two quality teams this year.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_00]: They absolutely got run out of Baton Rouge by 41 points.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_00]: And then they lost it home to Miami by 28.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_00]: There is no there there for Clemson.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just a very difficult situation.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_00]: I still think it's very hard to even contemplate saying, Debo, you've got to go.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_00]: You'd want two national championships.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_00]: You'd to us to seven cards football playoffs.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_00]: You've got to go.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_00]: I would like to see a school, a president and a athletic director that are going to do that.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure they can get there.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_00]: The problem is anything short of that.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure he listens and says, you've got to change it, because we've been doing this dance for a couple of years now.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_00]: And it's the same dance and the same rhetoric and largely the same results that are nowhere near what Clemson
- 37:22[SPEAKER_00]: Football is back in the season is already moving fast.

- 38:31[SPEAKER_00]: Now, we did have one firing on Saturday.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_00]: In the middle of a game, this was an all-timeer.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_00]: Fort Collins, Colorado State.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_00]: My goodness, Jim Mora, first season there, started off pretty well.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_00]: Then things have been deteriorated.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_00]: And here's the situation on Saturday.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_00]: So they would be Wyoming and Sun Utah, Wyoming's awful as it turns out.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_00]: Then they lost handily to BYU.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_00]: They gave up 59 points to UTSA.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_00]: And then they gave up 56 Oregon State.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_00]: And in the process of that happening, in the first quarter, Jim Moira, who's, he's had some temper during games before,
- 39:21[SPEAKER_00]: fired his deepwood demoted his defensive coordinator, Tyson Summers.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_00]: He told him he is no longer calling the defense in the middle of a game, handed delegated that to another assistant.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_00]: Summers reaction, he left, left the stadium, left the team, and similarly was terminated as more
- 39:49[SPEAKER_00]: If you ever seen that one before, that was a new one for me.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that was, I don't understand how we wasn't fired after last week.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_01]: That's really like, that's that's that's that's my only hold up.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_01]: Like if you're going to do it, like what what what were you hoping to see change going into this Oregon state game?
- 40:07[SPEAKER_01]: And also like, like, why did you keep ties and summers in the first place?
- 40:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like that was not a top 100 defense last year.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_01]: It was a two and 10 football team.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, by the way, they have like 75 new players.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not like, oh, we kept the defense together.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_01]: They lost their intubate, they flipped the entire roster.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, this was a disastrous one.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_01]: I do think they're like kind of a sneaky dangerous team when the quarterback hosts hedged me from local homestades in there.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_01]: Like they can move the football, but I mean, their defense is so catastrophically bad that it might be quite the year in four counts.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_02]: You can take the, the pack 12 and spin it up again, but you can't take the pack 12 after dark out of the conference and you're like coming into the season, you know, take together this point.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_02]: I was a little surprised that he definitely did take keep Tyson summers around Lake from a scheme standpoint for impersonal standard from personality standpoint between Jim Warren and him like I don't I never thought that was like all right, that's that that's going to mix well.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_02]: and we certainly saw that kind of blow up in everybody's face this week and I'm actually surprised that we don't have more of these type of stories you know come out like I mean especially in terms of some of these you know heated games you get coaches you know yelling at each other on the sidelines like I'm kind of surprised we don't have more of these especially at the group of group of six level.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_02]: You know, where they might go a little bit under the radar, but you know what, more things, you know, to hit their in Fort Collins going on, and I'm, I, I, I, I remain fascinated by the packed wells in general because like the, the amount of like shootouts that are going to happen in that league, I'm not a crazy result that we're going to see as we go in an over and December, like there's, there's, there's definitely the entertainment factor, it gets it gets turned up a few notches as soon as the sun goes down in there in the west.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_00]: The Tyson Summers curriculum Vitae is interesting.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_00]: He was a head coach before, a Georgia Southern.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_00]: They got rid of him incredibly fast there.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_00]: Middle of his second season.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_00]: His first season he was five and seven and 2016.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_00]: Second season started Owen six and they'd yank him right there.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_00]: Not very good.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_00]: He was the interim coach at Carter to state last year after Jane or Velga fired.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_00]: He went, oh and five in that role.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_00]: So he has lost.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see here 11 straight games as I head coach either as the permanent head coach or the interim.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_00]: And now he has been fired in game during the first quarter.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_00]: of a game as defense coordinator that's a that's a wild one to me I don't I don't know you know like I'm sure
- 42:56[SPEAKER_00]: There've been times when like play calling duties have been yanked during a game, but I can't think of many, and then yeah, what's the reaction?
- 43:06[SPEAKER_00]: How do you react to that?
- 43:07[SPEAKER_00]: You would like to think your professional enough that you hang in there and finish the game, but I want to know if you like left the stadium altogether.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for that.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_01]: I wasn't getting watched the 3rd and 4th quarter from home.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_01]: Like what did he put on other games?
- 43:21[SPEAKER_01]: Did he just go to a bar?
- 43:22[SPEAKER_00]: He went down to the fat tire brewery and had a couple of them watched, you know, watch it on TV.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_00]: I guess.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there's more to this story we need to know.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_00]: Where do you guys and summers go?
- 43:35[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, right up the road in Boulder, you know, a couple of years ago, Dion kind of did this midseason with his office of Gordner, you know, so like it's not, it's not out of the realm of it.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe it's just the state there, Pat.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe it's maybe, maybe your home state's got some, some interesting home cooking there.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think the edibles are growing around.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_00]: So you see some strange things happen in the state of Colorado.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_00]: So speaking of which, good segue there, the Buffalo's, oh my, they're circus there, too.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_00]: They're bad, they're bad at football.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_00]: scored seven against Texas Tech.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_00]: I actually led seven to six into the second half, which was not a good sign for Texas Tech.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_00]: But then never scored again, lost 297, third straight loss included in the Texas Tech touchdowns.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_00]: quarterback Isaac Wilson dropping back rolling out in the end zone through to a Texas Tech Defender in the end zone.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_00]: It was a zero yard touchdown interception return.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's not really ideal.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_00]: But here were the two things that stood out from that game as we wonder what the hell is going on with Coach Prime's program.
- 44:43[SPEAKER_00]: One, according to DNVR buffs,
- 44:51[SPEAKER_00]: At one point, they sent that Colorado sent eight players out for field goal block.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_00]: Timeout was called, then they sent out nine still the math is still not mathing when you only have nine guys on the field coming after a timeout.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_00]: And then there was a report that seems to have some veracity to it about a Colorado playbook or play script being left in the hotel and some Texas tech fans finding it.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_00]: And like trying to get a hold of tech and I don't think they did because this was the opening script and actually worked, but somebody on Twitter actually paired up the the the schemes from this with what Colorado ran and it looks legit it looks like this really was the script and so somebody is just leaving the game plan laying around the hotel you got nine guys on the field goal block.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm done.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, where is this going, right?
- 45:55[SPEAKER_01]: They are really bad.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_01]: The offense is a joke.
- 45:59[SPEAKER_01]: He was, he said that you'd have to ask Julian Lewis, why Julian Lewis is in playing and then said he didn't bench him, but why would Julian Lewis not be playing?
- 46:06[SPEAKER_01]: Does Julian Lewis not want to be playing football?
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: I find that hard to believe.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_01]: And the special team stuff, like it's one thing that was, oh man, like we accidentally ran on eight guys, it's been like every week, they also had a disastrous, they they fake the pun it was it was a disaster this coaching staff has 14 play guys listed as assistant coaches.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_01]: It has nine analysts.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_01]: They don't have a single person devoted to special teams.
- 46:29[SPEAKER_01]: They do not have a special team's coach.
- 46:31[SPEAKER_01]: And perhaps you do not have a special team's coach.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_01]: One of these 23 men in this organization, camping in charge of making shows is loving guys on the field.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_01]: Is that too much to ask?
- 46:39[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't know, man.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_01]: Like, they're, they're a really bad.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_01]: And like, there's like, there's different flavors of bad football team.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_01]: This is like the particularly embarrassing one where you do some just like mind boggling stuff every time you step on the field.
- 46:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's the problem is it's just there's a level of dysfunction.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_00]: It looks like that that's tough to overcome.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_00]: And while the big 12 is wide open, the rest of their schedule is daunting.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they got Utah on to either office next week.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_00]: They got Utah on two weeks.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_00]: They're at Oklahoma State, the case state is not bad.
- 47:15[SPEAKER_00]: There's got they got Houston, they're at Cincinnati.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, if they win more than four games, I'll be surprised.
- 47:23[SPEAKER_00]: All right, one thing I might, my homework assignment for you guys was to help me figure out the model in the upper middle class of the SEC.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_00]: I attended Missouri Florida.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_00]: of absolute feet down of the gators.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_00]: And to me, it illustrated how the schedule can get you, if you, if you have a hangover after a big win, the schedule's going to get you in that league, because
- 47:54[SPEAKER_00]: Ole Miss had the landmark victory over Lane Kiffin and was just right to get plucked the next week at Florida and did and lost by 24 and now as Florida's turn, you're undefeated, you're moving to the top 10 dummies like me right about how great John summer is and then they get absolutely trucked by Missouri, Missouri is lost to Mississippi State.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_00]: So there's seven one loss teams right now in the SEC.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_00]: We got Georgia Alabama and Texas who are undefeated.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_00]: One of those two, one of either Georgia Alabama's gonna lose next week, but for now they're all undefeated and look like they're probably a cut-up of everybody else.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_00]: And then we've got Mississippi State, Missouri, Florida, Mississippi, LSU, Kentucky and Tennessee.
- 48:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know how to tell them apart or how to rank them, but some of these teams are gonna get playoff bits.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_00]: I would anticipate.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_00]: So, how would you put those seven in order?
- 48:54[SPEAKER_00]: Who wants to go first, Brian?
- 48:57[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I thought there was not going to be any homework and involvement in the making of this podcast, but I still think from a talent standpoint, you know, I would go with LSU, you know, and what part of that talent is injured and so like that is the other thing that you got to keep in mind with the tires.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_02]: I just think in terms of the overall program from the investment in terms of coaching staff, in terms of the late gift, kind of getting the maximum, you know, out of the roster.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_02]: I still would put kind of LSU right there.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think Florida might be right after them.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and I think it was more of just a one off for the gators, you know, their Missouri and it's kind of one of those things where it's like, All right, you know, things don't quite go your way, you know, they tied it at 10 and then just kind of kind of got away from them and it's just no while from there.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_02]: I still think Florida in terms of that ground game in terms of iron, phyllo in terms of playing good defense.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_02]: I still think that could be, you know, probably a, you know, 10 to two nine and three type of team and that probably is at least getting you in the mix, you know, for the playoff.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_02]: I'm probably most, you know, warm.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_02]: skeptical about the Mississippi schools.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think gold misses defense.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I don't know if that's playoff caliber, you know, based on what we've seen out of them certainly not only the last week in Gainesville, but you know, even even against LSU in that second half you know, you were able to move the ball.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_02]: I think as it comes up against better offenses as well.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that's going to be something that's an old miss going to have to keep an eye on, and I'm not quite sure they have the personnel.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_02]: They've gotten a racer in terms of Trinidad Jamilus, and that always gives you a chance, offensively, especially when paired with Keylon.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_02]: Keylon Lacey, if he's healthy.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think Mississippi stay a little bit more of an issue same thing.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_02]: You know, do that to defense to kind of pair with a quarterback that didn't, can be so dynamic.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think there's there's going to be some more question marks, especially as the schedule certainly ramps up and intensity Missouri, I still don't know you even after being slaughtered like that like I still don't know what to do you know with with with the tigers and I mean you would be better position to tell me that but like you know I just I remain skeptical overall in terms of talent level.
- 50:53[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I do think, you know, on his day, drink can skin most of plays, he can pull off a win, but he's probably going to lose to somebody, you know, maybe even this is coming week that he probably should, you know, and turn around.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_02]: So like that's going to always been, you know, the, the juxtaposition with Missouri and then.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I mean, I think Tennessee's probably above those, but like it really is kind of like reaching to a hat and pull out a team and maybe you just go with them for this week and you can reach in the hat the next week and pull out another team and and at their foot order because that's just kind of the nature of the SEC that's just me more, but it also means, you know, everybody's closely bunch everybody's going to play each other, you know, I don't think the home on road splits mattered quite as much as they used to, you know, in the conference.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to hit three or four plays every single weekend if you want to emerge victorious.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's probably just going to be the nature of what we're going to see week and week out moving forward to the SC at this point.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_01]: For my rankings, I did, I did Ole Miss number one, just because I trust the quarterback.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_01]: Like, and look, obviously I'll see you move to the second half against them, but that was an awesome showing in the first half.
- 52:02[SPEAKER_01]: And the game spiraled from them in Gainesville, but that was a game, I would say, most of the way until it wasn't.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_01]: I had Florida, LSU Ole Miss though, very, very close.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're probably a little bit above the rest.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_01]: I think Missouri's like the big wild card where Simmons's highs put them at a very, very, you know, elite place and, you know, some of the lows or a little bit more bumpy.
- 52:30[SPEAKER_01]: I put Kentucky fifth in terms of like, I just don't know yet.
- 52:35[SPEAKER_01]: Um, it feels like every time a team is lost to Kentucky, we have used that as an indictment on the other team at some point it has to be an indictment on the administration.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_01]: What Kentucky is pretty good.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_01]: And then I put the two that I don't see making the playoff in Tennessee and Mississippi state.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, what the tomorrow thing was fun, but.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's so many mistakes, so much work to do after the Alabama game.
- 52:58[SPEAKER_01]: That was very obvious that he still has some work to do.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_01]: And then Tennessee, I mean, the quarterback position is just the just a mass right now.
- 53:06[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how they score as they get later into the year.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_01]: If we're looking at like, how do you get to nine wins in the SEC, let alone 10?
- 53:15[SPEAKER_01]: I just don't see it with Tennessee right now.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, this is fascinating exercise.
- 53:21[SPEAKER_00]: I tried to look at this on resume to date as opposed to projecting really, and it's still really hard.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_00]: But I put Mississippi State at the head of the class because they've not just won twice on the road, they crushed Minnesota.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_00]: And hey, where's Minnesota right now?
- 53:37[SPEAKER_00]: I'll even sit there for in one,
- 53:39[SPEAKER_00]: in the big ten.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_00]: Their loss was bad.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Alabama truck them, but that's Alabama.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_00]: And Alabama's offense right now looks spectacular.
- 53:46[SPEAKER_00]: They did beat Missouri, so they've got to rank win.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm putting them an inch above Missouri, which was completely dominant yesterday, and completely shut down Florida's running game.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, you know, yeah, Wildcard don't know, you know, from week to week after that, I've got Florida Mississippi LSU and they're all, there's an inch separating all of those.
- 54:12[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really know for sure how to rank them, but I'm putting Florida ahead of Mississippi because they've dominated them and then lost to a rank team on the road.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_00]: Mississippi did the same thing.
- 54:24[SPEAKER_00]: LSU doesn't have as good a wins.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think like it.
- 54:27[SPEAKER_00]: Who is LSU beaten so far?
- 54:29[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody that really, you know, catches my eye.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_00]: Clemson is no good.
- 54:34[SPEAKER_00]: So beating Texas A&M.
- 54:36[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think Texas A&M's any good.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_00]: And then I got Kentucky, even though they have two road wins.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_00]: Good for them for that.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_00]: And then I got Tennessee last of the group just because again, I don't see.
- 54:46[SPEAKER_00]: I don't see them having done anything to really plan a flag yet.
- 54:50[SPEAKER_00]: So.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, my thinking though here, guys, like, if the other three are making the playoffs, if Alabama, Georgia and Texas are all making the playoffs, probably certainly at least one of these seven, if not two or even three could make it.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_00]: What is your tolerance level for how many SEC teams can you tolerate seeing in the playoff, Kevin?
- 55:21[SPEAKER_01]: The thing, like, I can tolerate probably the top half of those.
- 55:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think of the group we talked Ole Miss Florida, LSU, Missouri, I would be interested in all of those right now.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_01]: As well as James, the other three, I think, no more.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_01]: I need to see what we'll see a lot more.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_01]: I just like.
- 55:38[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so fascinated by the resume conversation with some of these because I just, I think we're headed towards a million eight and fours.
- 55:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I really do.
- 55:46[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know how you had 12 team play off in eight and four teams in the play off.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_01]: But like, do we really think all misses going tendensive?
- 55:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, probably nine and three maybe, right?
- 55:56[SPEAKER_01]: Nine and three seems realistic, but, oh boy, I mean,
- 56:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to take some, it's going to take some serious work in the next two months, kind of parsing through who this is.
- 56:08[SPEAKER_01]: I think the, right now, I think the common refrain is that the SEC is going to dominate Bid's wise because the Big Ten doesn't seem like it has quite the depth that we expected.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think anyone's excited about the Big 12 teams.
- 56:21[SPEAKER_01]: The ACC is not had a great, great go of it.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_01]: It feels like, okay, it's going to be the SEC's run, but
- 56:27[SPEAKER_01]: Again, what happens if the SEC cannibalize itself too much, I think we're headed towards that, and I'm fascinated to see the Paula ticking that comes with something else afterwards.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_02]: There's there's there's going to be playing that that's and you know to your to your point like I mean it does look like the big 12 yes it looks like a big you know when did leak at this point, especially given the way Texas tech is not kind of lived up to expectations there, but you know what happens if you know be why you ends up being in order to name and then you know you talk comes in and beats be why you like that's kind of at almost a bit dealer type of type of situation the same with Miami and the ACC like what happens is they get to.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_02]: You know, Charlotte and Duke pulls off a miracle upset, you know, that kind of locks into ACC teams.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_02]: That's going to impact, you know, the big tin bits.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_02]: I look at really the key to my for my vantage point is Iowa, you know, it's not even after losing Ohio State and just laying Jeremiah Smith door, whatever you wanted on the field, they're in Kinnick.
- 57:23[SPEAKER_02]: 11 at one's not crazy to think that I was just kind of sitting out there as an 11 and one yeah they might be a 10 or 11 scene but know what they're going to be in the playoff if they're 11 and one and you're definitely going to be hearing about that from big 10 territory you look at organ out there 10 and two as a possibility have a stack up against some of these teams especially in the as you see that might be 9 and 3 you know where we are going to get down into the details with this committee in particular in terms of strength of schedule and
- 57:48[SPEAKER_02]: We've been hearing all, we've been throwing those out, we've been throwing the metrics out.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_02]: This is going to be a war between the Big Ten and the SEC moving forward in terms of who's really deserving of those wins and who's really deserving of those playoffments.
- 58:02[SPEAKER_02]: And I think we're going to get down to brass tax, come November, in terms of really going through that to the mind details of all these who has those quality wins and who has those quality losses.
- 58:12[SPEAKER_00]: note out that's where this is that that's where the the arguing is going to be and oh my god it's going to be incessant arguing but over those those last few bids and big 10 SEC and we're going to hear so much about the SEC were playing nine games now were playing nine but then yes if there's a second compelling big 12 team if there's a second compelling ACC team then how does this get sliced and diced
- 58:41[SPEAKER_00]: It is going to be like if you if you thought there was a lot of politics and arguing last year it's there's going to be more this year because we're just going to have a lot of teams losing a substantial number of games so prepare yourself.
- 58:54[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we're not going to fire coaches today because we just, I think we did fire several of them, those we were talking about the hot seat, but we will hand out the Heisman as always on Sunday here.
- 59:05[SPEAKER_00]: Who do you guys want to give your Heisman trophy to for the first weekend in October or Kevin?
- 59:12[SPEAKER_01]: I'll head to Evanston, shout out to Joe Heiman, the second.
- 59:16[SPEAKER_01]: This guy has been all kinds of dynamic.
- 59:18[SPEAKER_01]: 10 carries, 162 yards.
- 59:21[SPEAKER_01]: I believe three carries of 30 plus and a couple more that would have gone that far.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_01]: If he hadn't already hit the end zone, because Penn State's defense was getting thoroughly gashed by the chip Kelly Flexbaum.
- 59:34[SPEAKER_01]: wild world world living in, but Joe Heiman has long been the Northwestern Skatback ever every team has that like one creative player that like the fan base is dying for more touches.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_01]: How do we get on the ball?
- 59:45[SPEAKER_01]: How do we get on the ball?
- 59:46[SPEAKER_01]: And every year it's the time we're going to get on the ball this year.
- 59:48[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Chip Kelly's getting on the ball and he is finding Peter.
- 59:51[SPEAKER_01]: So shout out to Joseph Heiman and the Wild Count rushing attack.
- 59:54[SPEAKER_01]: Excellent.
- 59:55[SPEAKER_01]: Brian.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I was kind of debating in Florida.
- 59:59[SPEAKER_02]: I was state given that crazy game that they had against West Virginia, but I'm going to turn around and give it to Ashden Daniels.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's rare that a quarterback is going to have more rushes than completions in a game, but man, he the five touchdowns on the ground, just the beating.
- 1:00:15[SPEAKER_02]: the shalaking if you will of Virginia in a big win as we talked about earlier for Mike Norville.
- 1:00:20[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to give it to Ash and Daniels.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_02]: He's taken his lumps certainly from the fan base and from well beyond tele hassy there in terms of his play, but that was an impressive performance as they rushing quarterback, almost like an old old school option guy there for the most.
- 1:00:35[SPEAKER_00]: I am going to the Ivy League and maybe the most poignant story of the season certainly of the
- 1:00:43[SPEAKER_00]: A Yale quarterback Dante Reno.
- 1:00:45[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, it was it was an unbelievable day in the Ivy League.
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_00]: He saw Harvard win a game on a Hail Mary lateral against Colgate on the last play.
- 1:00:54[SPEAKER_00]: That was something.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_00]: But then Dante Reno Yale playing against Maramaq is the day after his father who had been the coach at Yale Tony Reno passed away.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_00]: He'd been on medical leave for a long time, rare neurogenitive disease, and so, you know, this was a chronic condition, it was clearly coming very sad story.
