- 0:49once we learned it, our lives were transformed. And once you
- 0:53learn it, watch what happens. Welcome to think it be the
- 0:59podcast. I'm Kelly Hatfield.
- 1:02John Mitchell: Hey. And I'm John Michell. So the topic today is
- 1:07your morning routine determines your success in life. Kelly,
- 1:12would you buy that?
- 1:13Kelly Hatfield: Amen to that I buy every I buy it? Two times
- 1:17over.
- 1:19John Mitchell: Right, right. Well, you know, I tell you this
- 1:24course it's it transformed both our lives, right. Learning the
- 1:3012 minute they technique that that is our respective morning
- 1:34routine. But, you know, one thing I see that really is
- 1:39enlightening to me today is and this, my eyes first got open to
- 1:47this about three or four years ago. And I told you this story,
- 1:51but I go to I think it was Cleveland for a sort of a
- 1:56mastermind thing over three days. And and Jay Abraham, who
- 2:02is Tony Robbins mentor, was the featured speaker. And as part of
- 2:09the thing I was on the hot seat, you know, I'm on the hot seat,
- 2:13Jay Abraham was, you know, sort of the Master of Ceremonies and
- 2:21so he's quizzing me. And there's, there's 100 people
- 2:26there. You know, they're all entrepreneurs. They're all you
- 2:29know, probably making 100 200,000 a year typically
- 2:34something like that a lot, a lot of solopreneur partners. And so,
- 2:40in the middle of my hotseat thing, I go, well, listen, let
- 2:44me ask y'all a question. And I go, how many people have do
- 2:51anything to impact their mindset each morning? Well, only one in
- 2:56five hands goes up. So 20% and, and I'm like, wow, this is
- 3:02interesting, because, you know, I just spent three days with the
- 3:05people. And I thought they were all pretty damn sharp. And, and
- 3:10I'm like, wow, what don't they get? Now I I understand, my life
- 3:16got transformed and increased my income by 25 times from a
- 3:21morning routine. So sure, I get it. But I see that. And this is
- 3:28so friggin true. Life is a state of mind. And when you wake up
- 3:33each morning, you're innately wired for survival, which causes
- 3:38you to be fear based and reactive. Well, you have
- 3:41absolutely got to fix it. And the only way to fix it is a
- 3:46morning routine. That through that repetition, because again,
- 3:50the subconscious mind is only influenced with repetition. It's
- 3:54that continual repetition every morning that overrides that
- 3:59survival orientation and wires you for success. But I am blown
- 4:05away by how people don't get that their morning routine at
- 4:11the end of the day, determines your success in life. I know you
- 4:15buy this.
- 4:16Kelly Hatfield: Oh, yeah. 100% agree. And I think John, now
- 4:19more than ever. Yeah, I think the the need to influence our
- 4:23mindset. You know, and framing and starting your day, you know,
- 4:28setting the plate for your day, by having a technique. And a
- 4:33morning routine that sets you up for success is critical with all
- 4:37of the things that we have how fast things are moving right
- 4:40now. Everything's coming out you it puts you into this proactive
- 4:44mode you've got if you're not taking in the right things. So
- 4:48you've got too much of the wrong influences coming into your
- 4:51brain. It impacts things stress impacts things drastically. So
- 4:55when you're just like, you know waking up, you know and go kind
- 5:00of full, you know, bouncing through the day like a ping
- 5:02pong, you know, a ball within a Ping Pong machine, you know,
- 5:05that's what my mind how I see it right now on earth can you
- 5:09expect to, you know, be efficient, you know, have the
- 5:13right mindset to achieve the things that you want to achieve,
- 5:17and be happy, you know, and so anyway, but we're 100% on the
- 5:22same page. And I think more so now than ever, as wonderful as
- 5:25technology is. It also, you know, has the reverse side to
- 5:31it. And I think that now, so more than ever, it's critical
- 5:35that you are, you've got a morning routine, and a mindset
- 5:40practice that sets you up for success. You know,
- 5:42John Mitchell: I last week, I had a group of 10 entrepreneurs
- 5:47over to my house and so I was explaining, think it be it to
- 5:52him. And about midway through the process, I asked everybody,
- 5:58I go, just close your eyes for a minute. Just close your eyes.
- 6:04And think about your morning routine, whatever that is. And,
- 6:08and, you know, so everybody closes her eyes, and they're
- 6:12thinking about their, their morning routine. And I'm having
- 6:19them think about is are you doing anything to impact your
- 6:23your mindset? And you know, largely, the morning routine,
- 6:28quote unquote, is I get up, I have breakfast, I brush my
- 6:33teeth. I'm out the door. Yeah, that's the morning routine. It's
- 6:38it has nothing to do with mindset. And, and then I go,
- 6:44okay, okay, now that you got your mindset Are you got your
- 6:48morning routine routine in your head, and you're thinking about
- 6:52it. And this is also after I explained that we're innately
- 6:56wired for survival, which is causing you to be innately wired
- 7:00to be fear based and reactive. I go, imagine, if you had a
- 7:06morning routine that took 12 minutes a day, where you fed
- 7:10this a synced articulation of your life to yourself each day,
- 7:14you know exactly the person you wanted to be exactly what you
- 7:18want to accomplish, and precisely how you're going to
- 7:21achieve your clearly defined goals. What if you had a morning
- 7:24routine? Like that? And that was what you're feeding every day?
- 7:29Do you think it would change your life? And, you know, is
- 7:35interesting, cuz I don't know, I guess out of the 10 people, you
- 7:40know, eight of them said, Boy, I want to learn this thing could
- 7:44be it. And I if I had to guess that was the pivotal, pivotal
- 7:50moment when they said, Oh, I'm now I'm connecting the dots that
- 7:54my success in life ultimately comes down to impacting my
- 7:59mindset. Because at the end of the day, life is a state of
- 8:03mind.
- 8:04Kelly Hatfield: Absolutely. No. And I mean, what a difference
- 8:07maker, you know, we talk about this all the time, I've said it
- 8:10a million times, probably in different settings, about, you
- 8:16know, this morning routine, and being very clear. I mean, you're
- 8:21starting your day, and we talk about the reticular activating
- 8:24system being the filter for your life, basically, right? We're
- 8:27informing it, you know, you are giving it its operation
- 8:31instructions for the day about how you're going to navigate and
- 8:35you know, how you're going to show up and it makes all the
- 8:38difference in the world. Otherwise, you know, one thing
- 8:41and I've talked about this, too, running on that proverbial
- 8:44treadmill numb, kind of sleepwalking through life,
- 8:47Groundhog's Day, rinse and repeat whatever it is, you're
- 8:51not experiencing life, part of this morning routine, too. You
- 8:58know, where you're setting yourself up for the day? We've
- 9:00only got one go around at this right? Do you want to actually
- 9:03experience life? Or do you want to be in the pinball machine?
- 9:11Around? Or do you want to squeeze every bit you can out of
- 9:13each moment at each interaction that you have with people show
- 9:17up in a different way so that you're experiencing life
- 9:20different and the people in your life are experiencing different
- 9:23as a result of how you're showing up? And this this
- 9:26morning routine helps you do that?
- 9:28John Mitchell: Why? Why don't you think people see this more
- 9:31clearly?
- 9:35Kelly Hatfield: You know, I think there are, I think just
- 9:40probably a closed, you know, mindset. I think people there
- 9:45are people who from a self awareness standpoint, right?
- 9:48That that's a piece of the puzzle that's kind of missing,
- 9:51do they have that closed mindset, meaning they don't have
- 9:53a growth mindset? Right. So, you know, I think there are just
- 9:57some people on that, you know, and I think to listen, it all
- 10:01has to do with how you're wired. We're talking about your
- 10:03subconscious, and right and rewiring that some people's self
- 10:09subconscious can be, I think so strong with the stories they've
- 10:13told themselves like, oh, I tried that before, it didn't
- 10:15work for me. Okay, why? Did you try it consistently over a
- 10:20period of time? Or did you try it once and the magic didn't
- 10:23happen? You know, you know, right away. And so you just
- 10:26stopped doing it? You know, I think that people get hardwired
- 10:31into this. Oh, I've tried that closed mindset. Oh, I've tried
- 10:34that before won't work for me, or oh, that sounds woowoo? Or,
- 10:38yeah, so they just have that closed mindset. I think that's
- 10:40one of the things what do you think?
- 10:43John Mitchell: Well, you know, I tell you, you know, and I know
- 10:45you, because you had to put up with me saying it a couple of
- 10:50years ago, you know, I'd go people, what the hell do you not
- 10:55get your you're wired for survival. Which is means you're
- 11:01not wired for success. You know, if you're fear based and
- 11:04reactive, then that's the opposite of how you need to be
- 11:08if you want to be successful. So, yeah, let's just get that
- 11:12out there. So if it wouldn't it make sense to take the st
- 11:20articulation of your life and feed it to yourself every more
- 11:23every morning. And then of course, it would influence your
- 11:27daily actions, and then those improved daily actions, then
- 11:32we'd create the life you want. I'm like, people, this thing
- 11:36doesn't get any simpler than that. Come on, let's get it.
- 11:40And, you know, and then over the last couple of years, I think
- 11:46I've been become more accepting of people. And I go, Well, you
- 11:50know, everybody's, everybody's different. You know, everybody,
- 11:54everybody is simply a function of, of their genetics, what has
- 11:59come into their consciousness to this point, and whether they
- 12:03have testosterone or estrogen flowing through their veins,
- 12:07those are the three factors that, that create each of us.
- 12:13And over the last year or so I'm going, you know, okay, I see why
- 12:19people don't get it. They don't have the same genetics I have. I
- 12:23don't have the they don't have the same life experiences I've
- 12:28had at but I don't know, lately, I'm sort of going back a little
- 12:32too, like I was I'm like, come on. Yes, I get all that. But
- 12:36come on, you gotta have a basic level of intelligence. This is
- 12:41so freakin simple, it hurts. And, and, and, but because I see
- 12:48that what what we've really created is a life operating
- 12:53system for smart people. And, and I hate to say this, but if
- 12:59you're not smart, you probably don't get it. You know. That
- 13:04terrible design.
- 13:08Kelly Hatfield: I love it's fun just tells it like it is. It's
- 13:11like listen, if you're stupid, stop listening right now.
- 13:16John Mitchell: You know, you cannot fix stupid, I've cried
- 13:20and you cannot fix stupid.
- 13:25Kelly Hatfield: And I think, you know, with this idea of this
- 13:28morning routine, and, you know, some things may be coming up,
- 13:32you know, as you're thinking about this, you'll start to feel
- 13:36that resistance, like your brain is designed to protect you. It's
- 13:39designed to keep you in that little comfort zone and
- 13:41everything. And so, you know, the excuses start to fly well,
- 13:46I'm my morning is already packed, I don't have time for
- 13:48you know, 12 minutes a day, well, you have time to scroll up
- 13:52a storm at different different points of your day. You know,
- 13:56your, your, you know, when I ask people with their morning
- 13:59routine is and they're sharing it, it sounds like chaos, you
- 14:03know, they're running around there. And it's like, you know,
- 14:05you can buy time back by, this is the best 12 minutes of your
- 14:10day that you'll spend, and you will win back hours of time by,
- 14:16you know, implementing this practice and doing it on a
- 14:20consistent basis. And, anyway,
- 14:23John Mitchell: well, I you know, I see that, that a lot of people
- 14:26there if they, if they do anything, they're going well,
- 14:30you know, I do meditation or I do affirmations or I, I exercise
- 14:36and, and those things are better than nothing. But and you know,
- 14:41I again, I'm I meditate a little each morning, but you know, that
- 14:45quiets the mind, the what we do, focuses the mind, that's what
- 14:51our 12 minute a day technique does. And I think a lot of
- 14:54people struggle with deep meditation And, but why people
- 15:03don't see this? More. I'm not exactly sure who I guess I am
- 15:09sure. Because we live in such a shallow thinking culture, we
- 15:15have so many things coming at us that, that it hasn't resonated
- 15:20with people that the morning routine is what determines your
- 15:24success in life. And I think that if you had to condense all
- 15:29that I've learned in my life, it's that that's your morning
- 15:33routine determines your success in life. And the simpler you and
- 15:38I can make it for people to see that. Probably the more
- 15:42powerful, what we have will be, don't you think?
- 15:45Kelly Hatfield: Oh, 100%? You know, when we're thinking too,
- 15:48about why people don't? I don't know about you, John, but nobody
- 15:51taught me how to think. Right, right. You know what I mean, I
- 15:54didn't learn how my brain worked in school and what I needed to
- 15:57do to, like, we didn't talk about morning routines, or
- 16:02routine or mindset, for that matter, like, none of those
- 16:05things, at least in my generation, I'm, you know, we're
- 16:10an we're part of the youth specifically are part of the
- 16:14educational system now at the University of Texas, you know,
- 16:17and it's just being integrated in, you know, is it something
- 16:21that you learned in high school? Or were a teacher says, Hey,
- 16:25here's how your brain works, you know, and here's how to thrive
- 16:29and here's how to think and get it. Nobody taught me this? Oh,
- 16:33no, I didn't learn this till you taught it to me, you know, and I
- 16:35was, you know, in just coming on 40. To turn 40 At that time, so
- 16:41John Mitchell: yeah, well, and, you know, that's a great point,
- 16:44you know, as, as I, you know, what I teach at the University
- 16:49of Texas, which is no, no different than what we teach
- 16:53entrepreneurs, is purely leadership itself. And just to
- 16:57your point, nobody teaches you leadership of self. And, you
- 17:01know, to me, you know, leadership itself is starts by
- 17:05having the attitude that I can accomplish anything I set my
- 17:09mind to, and then it evolves to, you know, personal
- 17:14responsibility and never being a victim, always owning your
- 17:18results. And if you don't like the results, change the
- 17:22behaviors that are creating the results. And but this whole idea
- 17:26of leadership of, of self is, is something that really is rarely
- 17:33rarely ever taught. But once you go down this rabbit hole, which
- 17:37you know, now, as I mentioned, you know, all the athletes at
- 17:41the University of Texas or are being required to take my
- 17:44course, which is really pretty fun. And, but nobody is really
- 17:51taught them formally, leadership itself. Now with the athletes.
- 17:55The coaches have taught them leadership itself, but they
- 17:59haven't called IT leadership of self. In fact, the coaches have
- 18:03set the foundation, and all I do is take it that next level up
- 18:09and show it, show them how it applies to be successful in the
- 18:13real world. You know, they're teaching them how to be
- 18:15successful at their sport. And so it's a bit it's an easy
- 18:19transition to now take it maybe at a little more scientific
- 18:25level and a lot more a little more formalized and show them
- 18:30how to apply it in the real world. But again, leadership
- 18:35itself ultimately comes down to your morning routine. percent.
- 18:40Yeah. And so that's the power of it. So I hope we got through to
- 18:45everybody today and let him
- 18:47Kelly Hatfield: hear people people
- 18:52John Mitchell: know, probably Apple podcast is gonna go you
- 18:55know, those two, you don't want to listen to that, that think
- 18:59it'd be at the podcast. Those two are just abusing their
- 19:03audience. We've got to get them off the air. Okay, until next
- 19:11time, we'll see you.
