Transcript
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Every writer has felt like this at one time or another.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: You're chugging along with your content and things are going smoothly, the ideas are flowing and you're feeling great.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And then it happens.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: You hit a wall.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: The creative juices have dried up, and you sit there wondering where to go from here.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Hey, it happens to the best of us, even to the very best of us, even people like Ernest Hemingway.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: What did he do when he was feeling blocked?
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: He said this there's no rule on how to write.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it comes easily and perfectly.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's like drilling a rock and then blasting it out with charges.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: You can draw your own conclusions about what he meant exactly and how to go about it, but here are three things you can do when you are creatively blocked.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Number one is get up and walk around.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Scientific studies have shown the connection between creativity and exercise.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: And the simple act of changing your scenery and getting your blood flowing has amazing benefits for your creative brain.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Number two, take a break.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: We writers can be workaholics, never stopping for hours on end.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: So give your mind a break and then come back to your work later.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Let your subconscious mind work and solve the problem on your behalf.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And then number three, work on something else.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: The cross-pollination of ideas between projects can help you break down those creative barriers.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So the next time you feel blocked, don't just sit there and stare at the screen.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Be proactive and start drilling and blasting.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: If it worked for Hemingway, it will probably work for you and I as well.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: If you've been listening to this show for any length of time, you know that one of the four practices of a great writer is creativity.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And in order to stay creative, you've got to have great input.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And that's where writing prompts come in.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: A writing prompt is a sentence or two that helps you break through creative blocks, brainstorm new ideas, and get back into a state of flow.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Writing prompts are an awesome creative tool for journaling, storytelling, creative writing, stress relief, social media posts, and so much more.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: But the great news is that you don't have to create these yourself.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: We've put together an amazing package of 365 daily writing prompts.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So every day for the next year, you can have a shot of inspiration delivered straight to your inbox.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: You can check it out at dailywriterlife.com/slash writing prompts.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Thanks, and I'll see you tomorrow.
