- 0:11Welcome to another edition of Clover Quinn.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: What a pleasure to welcome on the great Clover Quinn, 10-year vet,
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Many accolades, 2014 All-Pro, led the league in interceptions that season, I believe, seven.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: Spent a number of years with the Texans and then the Lions.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: You started 148 straight games.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Is that right, Glower?
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Yep, 148.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: That's not easy to do at your position.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: You're a human missile out there.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: It really is.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Just a hell of a career.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Played the game the right way.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Doing a lot post-NFL.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Figured we'd hop on the podcast.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: And I heard some old war stories from one of the greats.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: How's life today?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: It's busy.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: It's fun.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: It's every day.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: I will say that.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: It's every day.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And...
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I have really no complaints, you know?
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, I enjoy the stage of life that I'm in right now, the things that I get to do.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I mean, I have no complaints.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Life is good.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Kids, I want to say, right?
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Three of them.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Three boys.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Three boys.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: How old?
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: 16, 14, and 11.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Woo!
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Man.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: So probably ready for school to start, right?
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, school started for us like three weeks ago.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Oh man, we got this week for us.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we already played our first football game.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, we started August 11th.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Something like that.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: So yeah, probably three weeks ago.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: So they're into football, all three of them?
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Um, my oldest is my youngest is my middle ones into basketball and track and stuff like that.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: So he didn't, he didn't, he didn't, he didn't want to take to the football.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: So he's doing basketball.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: How do you like that?
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's after playing the game a decade, um,
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: and then the pros playing your whole life to have,
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: to have your sons into all sports.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's gotta be the dream, right?
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: To, to pass it on.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: It's cool.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, you learn so much through sports, right?
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Sports teach you so many different things that you can apply to life
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: and just working with others,
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: being on teams,
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: sacrifice, so many things, discipline that you can learn through sports.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: So I definitely love that.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: I don't push football.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, they like to play it,
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: but I'm not one of the ones that's making them play it because I played it, right?
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: So if they want to play it, I don't discourage them and say, hey, no, you shouldn't do that.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: I just try to educate them and show them how they can play the game safer.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: But obviously when you're out there playing, things happen.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: So you know the risk of getting out there.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: But if you're going to do it, let's do it, right?
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: But I try to talk to them about that with any sport, you know, basketball.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Hey, this is this is what it is.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: This is this is the path.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: This is you know,
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: I know I never made it to the NBA,
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: but I mean, this is this is what it looks like, you know.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: And so I'm pretty realistic with them about, you know, sports and and what it takes.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: And the goal for me is it.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: You know, professional sports.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: I think the goal is college education.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: If you can use an ability that,
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: God blessed you with to get your education paid for nowadays,
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: you know, make a little money playing college ball.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: if you can graduate from college with no student debt and things like that,
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: getting to play at the professional level, that's just the icing on the cake, right?
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: That's Hey, that's the cherry at the top, right?
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: But the goal is, can I use this ability that I have to get my education paid for?
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Because that's going to give you a head start in life,
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: just being able to graduate with no student debt.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: And then,
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: like I said,
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: possibly get some money while being in college and be able to graduate
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: and hopefully find you Great job to start your career.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: And like I said,
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: if you get to play college football,
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, if you get to play professional sports, great.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Go and live it up.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Where does your journey really begin?
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: I want to say down in Mississippi, right?
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Macomb?
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Some of Mississippi.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Well, some of Macomb is kind of right next to each other.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, small town down in some of Mississippi.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: North Pike High School.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's crazy, just crazy just to think about,
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: you know, where I grew up, where I came from.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, when I was a kid,
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: you know, all these places and things in life, they really only existed on TV to me.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: And when I say that, it's like, like, I didn't think New York was a real place.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Because where I'm from, you know, you don't see buildings like that.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And so the only time you see that is on TV.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: So to me, that was just for TV, right?
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Like that's not a real place because it was so far out of the norm of what I saw
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: in my day-to-day life.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: And so professional sports, all that stuff, it just seems so far away.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: And when I say that,
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: it's like,
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: When you're growing up in Houston,
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: yes, it's still hard and the chances to make it are hard.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: But when you get to go to practices and watch the Texans,
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: go to their games,
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: go to different events or whatever city you're in, drive by the stadiums.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying that it's not As far away, but it may not seem as far away, right?
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: As the people that never even have access to be around those places, not even close.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: There's some remote small town out in the middle of nowhere.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: And to just figure out how can they even get to the stadium seems like a chore, right?
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: To them people, it seems like Nobody's coming out here to save you.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of how it was for me.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: The closest professional team where I'm from is the New Orleans Saints,
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: and they were about an hour and a half, two hours away.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: So nobody's coming to save you down here.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: And so to be able to take the route,
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: I went to JUCO out of high school and left JUCO and went to New Mexico and just kind
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: of take that.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Educational journey,
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: but also football journey through the different stages and to be able to persevere
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: through it all and get opportunity to play at the highest level.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: You know, it was, it was pretty cool.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: It was a, it was a, it was a great journey.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: I learned a lot, experienced a lot and you know, I, I can't say that I would change any of it.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: So what, what does your day to day really look like then?
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: Deep country, Mississippi, take us there.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Well, the thing is,
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: growing up back then,
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: we didn't have what we have now,
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: we didn't have cell phones,
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: we didn't have,
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: you know, all of that stuff that we have nowadays, back when I was a kid, right?
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: And I was the youngest of I got three older sisters.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: So I'm the youngest growing up in a, you know, smaller house.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: So We only got one TV in the main room.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: my parents got a TV in their room,
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: but you're not going in your parents' room and watching TV, right?
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: So you only got one TV, and I got three older sisters.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: I got a dad, mom.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: So my rights to the TV were slim.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Unless I wanted to watch soap operas or those type of shows,
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: probably was better for me to just go outside and play.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: So that's what I did most of the time, just go outside and play.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: And I grew up in like a country town,
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: so everybody around me was family members,
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: cousins, aunties, uncles, things like that.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: So being able to go outside and walk across the street to my cousin's house
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: and play some basketball,
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: play some football,
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Play baseball,
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: catch, throw, run through the woods, explore, just live a country life.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Now, I wasn't into the country things of like,
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: cows and horses,
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: although I grew up around it,
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: I just never really got into that as much,
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: you know, the hunting, You know, I went hunting, but I really wasn't.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: I was more into the sports and just being outside and playing sports every single day.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: I was playing something.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: If it was basketball season, I probably had a basketball in my hand every day.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: If it was football season, I probably had a football.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: If it was baseball season, we probably were playing some kind of baseball, playing catch.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Those type of things, riding bikes.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: That's what life was like,
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: you know, going to church every Sunday, every Tuesday and
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: going to school.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: That was it.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: That was life.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: It's a beautiful thing in the world we grew up in where phones don't really exist.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: And like you said,
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: you're only looking at a screen if you're able to
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: Went over some TV time from
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: a sibling and a parent.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: It's, I don't know, I'm a father of three.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: My three are younger than yours, but I'm already thinking about that.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: How do we take these devices and hurl them over that mountain over there as far
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: as far away as we can to grow up like we grew up?
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: Like a football in your hand, a basketball in your hand, getting dirty, playing outside.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: Shit, it's like, I don't know, it's like a lost art.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: You look around at kids today, it's, Got to be intentional with it as a parent.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: I'm sure you are with your three.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, it's tough.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: it's the balance of,
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: they need to know how to operate these things because that's what the world is going
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: to.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: The devices, the computers, the phones.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: So not giving them the opportunity to learn those things at
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: an early age could significantly set them back in the future because that's what
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: the future is going to be.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: But being able to balance it to where they still be able to go outside
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: and get physical activity and run around and play and learn the balance of,
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: hey, this is how I need to use these devices.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: These are the great things that I can use them for.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Because if you use them for the right reasons, they're great.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: I can't sit here and say that it's not.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: When it consumes your day and you're just laying around trying to find other stuff
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: to entertain you on the phone,
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: as opposed to going outside and dictating your life based on,
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: hey, these are the things that I'm going to do.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: I'm going to work on myself.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: I'm going to work on my game or whatever it is you're Interested in your hobby,
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: you're studying,
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: you're drawing,
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: you're writing,
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: whatever it is that you're interested in,
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: you got to make sure that you're putting that time into it.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, you sit around and find yourself watching other people live their lives.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Just watching it on social media,
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: watching it on YouTube,
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: you're watching other people live their life and you're really not doing anything.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: So you got to make sure you find that time to do what you need to do.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: But, you know,
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: if you use it,
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: like I said,
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: if you use it and balance it right,
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: seeing stuff on social media and,
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: you know, YouTube and things like that, I mean, it could be good.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: It's tough, though.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: It's omnipresent.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: It's everywhere.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: You're right, and all their friends are
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: going to have one, too.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: So I hear you.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: It's a necessary evil.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: Hell, I'm always railing against Twitter X, and it's like, you do need it.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: We got to get the word out.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Hey, but when you get to
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: junior college,
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: Southwest Mississippi,
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: then from there to New Mexico,
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: at what point did the NFL become a realistic life for you?
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: And did you see yourself playing a decade in the pros,
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: JUCO to New Mexico?
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: so when I went to JUCO,
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: I, you know, we didn't have all the transfer stuff like they have now, so.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: I didn't get the offer that I wanted coming out of high school.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: And so instead of going to a smaller D2 type school back at home,
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: I just figured I'd take my chances and go to JUCO.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: So, I mean,
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: I was already qualified out of high school,
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: so I didn't have to go to JUCO for grades or anything like that.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: I just, you know, wanted an opportunity to play at a higher level in a sense.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: So I went to JUCO and, you know, I graduated JUCO in three semesters.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: JUCO is typically a two-year program,
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: but I finished in three semesters.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: And so by doing that,
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: I was planning on going to JUCO and playing one season and leaving
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: because I didn't have to graduate to leave.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: But I broke my arm my first year at JUCO.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: So I only played in...
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: The first game fully and then the second game is when I broke my arm.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: So now it's like, all right, now I got to come back and play again.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: So then after the second season, Hurricane Katrina hit during that season.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: So season got cut short,
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: but I was able to make a few plays,
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: got invited to the All-Star game, the Juco All-Star game.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: And that's where I kind of went and made some money,
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: had a Really good week of practice, really good game.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: I think I caught an interception in the game.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: I think I had a sack, forced fumble, like really, really showed well in the game.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: And so after that game, recruitment started picking up.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: I get recruited to New Mexico and I get out there and, you know, it's just culture shock.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: It's this, it's that.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: And I didn't know anybody out there but the recruiting coach, honestly.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: But the thing that was driving me was I had told my mom that,
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: if I got an opportunity to play Division I football,
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: I didn't really care where I had to go.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: You know, I didn't really care.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: I wanted to play it.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: And New Mexico was a place that gave me that opportunity.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: So we packed up the truck and drove all the way to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: And, um...
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: That was kind of like my safe place.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: Like, you know what?
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: I'm out here for school.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: I'm out here for football.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: And that's what I'm going to stick to.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go pour everything I got into school.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: I'm going to pour everything I got into football.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: And, you know,
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: as I meet people and friends and things like that,
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure life will pick up.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: But that was my stickler, you know what I'm saying?
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: And so I played my first year out there.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: And I played well, but I didn't catch any interceptions the whole season.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: I played a whole season and didn't catch one interception.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: Came back my second year.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Had a big injury.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: I tore my groin in the second game.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: I missed two weeks.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Came back.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: Finished the season.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: Didn't have an interception my whole second season to the last game.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: The last game,
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: I caught two interceptions in one game and
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: basically kind of took
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: that momentum right into the offseason.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Had an incredible junior to senior year offseason.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: We had a junior day.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: I was in great shape.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: I ran well.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: I showed well at the junior day.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: So things kind of started like,
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Getting noticed a little bit,
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: like actually showing up in like draft stuff, but it was more like late, late stuff.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: Cause I hadn't really done that much.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: And then my senior came around and, you know, I had a great senior year.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: We played against some,
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: some big time schools that year and I played well against them,
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: had, you know, Got Player of the Week against Arizona.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Played well against Texas A&M.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Played well.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Had two interceptions against Tulsa.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: And so I ended up with five interceptions that year.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: First team all-conference.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Got voted team MVP.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Defensive MVP.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: So I was actually the first cornerback and actually the only cornerback in
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: the history of the school to win MVP.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: So took that momentum,
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: got an invite to, well, I went to the East West Shrine game, played, did well.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: I didn't go to the Senior Bowl.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: I got invited to the Combine, went to the Combine, showed well.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: And next thing you know, I was getting drafted.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: And so for me being at New Mexico, I didn't really know exactly how it was going to play out.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: I knew getting the opportunity to play D1 would give me a chance,
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: but it was really just working.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: And I didn't really start to see the results results until going into my senior year.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: My first two years,
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: it was just kind of like playing and staying afloat and figuring it out
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: and competing, but I wasn't putting up numbers to say I was going to get drafted.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, I was honorable mention all conference in the Mountain West, right?
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: So when you're in small conferences like that,
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: you probably got to be first team to think that you're going to get
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: You know, drafting, you gotta be the guy, right?
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: And so it wasn't until my senior year that it really started like, it started like happening.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay, I'm seeing it.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: I'm seeing my names climb up a little more.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: I'm like, okay, getting letters.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: Okay, then I, you know, Agents and stuff was coming and all these things were happening.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: I'm just like, okay, you know, this might actually happen.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: This might actually happen.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: And so it was a cool journey, though.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: It was cool.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: And then in total, you played 159 of 160 possible games.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: You had to get pride off that football field.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: You mentioned playing through a torn groin in college.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: That could not have been fun.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: Coming back from that,
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: you probably played through a few injuries as a pro.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: Holy hell, where would you begin?
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: What did you really play through to string together season to season to season?
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Man, it's crazy, man.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: the one game that I missed,
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: the one game that I missed was week 13, I think my rookie year.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: I sat out, had a head injury.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: I played against the Colts in week 12, I think, and had to play.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: So they sat me out week 13.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: So that was the only game that I missed for like a head injury.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: But it's kind of the same thing, right?
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: So my first year in the league, I didn't catch any interceptions, not a single one.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: My second year in the league, I didn't catch an interception until like week 12 or 13.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: And I was coming off.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: I broke my hand against the Jets.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: I had broke my hand.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: They had me in the cast,
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: but they were like,
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: you know, you can play with the cast on if you can deal with the pain.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: So I put the cast on.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: I'm going through practice and I'm like,
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: This is going to be tough.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: Because it's painful.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: And you got a big cast on.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to figure out how am I going to be able to tackle and jam and play.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: And went through the week.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: I had a big cast on.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: We're talking about how we could make the cast at least smaller so
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: that I can still have a cast on,
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: but it don't have to be as big as the one that I was practicing in.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: So we came up.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: We had this little cast that I had on my hand.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: And so we go out and we play and I cut my first three interceptions in that game
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: with a broken hand.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: How?
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: How'd you do it?
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Man, I caught the ball.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, in the moment, you know, in football, you know, you have plays, right?
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: As a wide receiver, you have plays where, you know, you're put in bad situations.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: And they tell you,
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: you know, you might as well catch the ball because you're going to get hit anyway.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Whether you catch it or whether you drop it, they're still going to hit you, right?
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: So there's certain things where, like, it's going to be painful anyway, right?
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: If I go up to catch the ball and I don't catch it, it's still going to hit my hands and hurt.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: So I might as well just catch it and deal with the pain and let the adrenaline wash
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: the pain away.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: So when I see my opportunity to go up and catch my first interception,
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: I'm definitely not letting my hand stop me from catching it.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: So I caught it.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: And then later in the game, they threw another one, and I caught that one.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: And then at the end of the game, pushing tip the ball and tip to me, and I caught that one.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: I had three picks in one game.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: It was crazy.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: Um, so that kind of was like one of the first injuries that I had.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: And then I dislocated my elbow and tore ligaments in my elbow.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: Um, I think the next year,
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: maybe it might've been my third year, third or fourth year, one of them.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: Um, my first year in Detroit, I was off to a incredible start.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: I had two picks in the first four weeks.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Formal recovery, like I was off to a great start.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: And then week four,
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: I like tore my ankle up,
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: like grade three tear in one ligament,
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: grade two tear in another ligament,
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: bone, bruise, cartilage, like just, and I played through it.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: You know, that was brutal.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: That was brutal.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: And the only reason why I played through that, it hurt, don't get me wrong.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: But I'm a football fan.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: And so I grew up watching like the Packers and,
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: you know, Lambeau Field, the history of the game.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: So I hurt my ankle in week four.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Well, week five, we were playing the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau Field.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: And that was going to be my first time getting to play in Lambeau Field.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: And so I was like, I can't miss the game.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Like I'm going to Lambeau Field.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: So yeah, bad ankle, crazy bad ankle.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, my ankle was probably like this big.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Like it was, it was unreal.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: How much pain were you really in?
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: Cause there's something in your head that says I'm playing.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: A lot of players don't have that.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: I'm, I'm,
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: I was going to play,
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: if I, if I could walk, I mean, I, I, I was, I was willing to deal with the pain.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: You know, but,
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: at that level, you have to be able to still play and not be a detriment to the team.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: So, you know what I'm saying?
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter how much you want to play.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: If you can't get your job done, they're going to put somebody else in there.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: So I just had to, man,
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: I was just doing treatment around the clock,
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: like early mornings, all throughout the day when I could.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: After practice, at home at night, I was sleeping with a game ready on my foot.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was a lot just to get to play.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: And once I played in that first game against Green Bay,
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: then I'm like, all right, I just got to repeat that every week and continue to play.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: But it was hard.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, that was, yeah, that was extruciating pain.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: And so, I dealt with some injuries throughout my NFL career.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: I just played through them.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: I was actually up in the press box for that game.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: 2013, Green Bay won 22-9.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: You had six solo tackles, though.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: So you were throwing your body in harm's way aplenty in that one.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: You played for Jim Schwartz, Jim Caldwell, and Matt Patricia.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: All three of those coaches in Detroit, right?
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: Boy, three very different coaches there.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: Well, see, Patricia and Schwartz were a lot alike.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: Jim Caldwell was totally different.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: But you just got Schwartz and Patricia at different times.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: See, Schwartz was on the hot seat.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: That was his last year in Detroit.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: And Patricia was on the high horse.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: That was his first year in Detroit and his first year as a head coach.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: So two different,
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: the same person,
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: just two different temperatures,
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: but Jim was kind of,
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: You know, he was,
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: like I said,
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: when you're on a hot seat as a coach,
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: you kind of feel like,
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: all right, well, if I'm going to go out, I want to go out doing it my way, right?
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: So he was stickler on, this is what I want done.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: We're going to do it this way, right?
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: And then Patricia was kind of the same.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: It was just, he was coming in from a, I'm this New England guy.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: I know it all.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: I've been doing this, I'm doing that.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: So this is what we're going to do.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: And it was just kind of like,
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: So my best years from a coaching standpoint and just having fun was
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: the four years I had with Jim Caldwell and his staff.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: That was a good time.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: You just had some good teams in there too.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: 2014 would have been your all-pro seven-pick season.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: You get to the playoffs.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: Was that the Dallas game in the wild card?
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: I want to say there was a controversial
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: call in there, right?
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it was, you know.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I mean, we still were, we were beating them pretty good.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: So it shouldn't have never even,
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: it shouldn't have never even been that close to even get to a controversial call.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: But we gave up a big touchdown,
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: I think right before the half and that kind of changed the momentum for us.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: That season for you though, what was, what was clicking Glover?
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: How were you able to,
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: Stringing the other seven picks,
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: make all the plays that you made,
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: that would have been the one you probably look back to most fondly.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: Man, it was great.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: Like I, you know, like I said, I was off to a great start.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: So when I got to Detroit, that was my first time really like playing safety.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: Like I got drafted as a corner.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: And then when Wade Phillips got to Houston in 2011, he moved me to safety.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: But he also had me playing the dime, which is like a linebacker.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: So on base downs,
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: I would be playing back as a safety,
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: but then on passing downs,
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: I would move down and basically play the linebacker,
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: and they would bring in another safety.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: So then I was basically responsible for covering a tight end, basically one-on-one, right?
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: So when you're locked up fighting man-to-man with tight ends,
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: you don't get a lot of opportunities to just see the ball and catch interceptions,
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: right?
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: And then on base downs,
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: when I was actually playing safety,
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: you know, you're getting a lot of the runs, quick passes.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: You don't get a lot of opportunities then to catch interceptions.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: So when I got to Detroit and they wanted me to play like a true safety,
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: that was like my first opportunity to do that and to show
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: that I could catch interceptions and make plays on the ball.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: And like I said, my first year in Detroit, I was off to a great start.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: I caught two interceptions in the first four games, you know, so...
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: Who knows what that season could have been had I never hurt my ankle.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: And so to come back my second year in Detroit,
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: got new coaching, new secondary coach, so a new system.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: And I was just able to stay healthy.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: And I was able to make some plays, man.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: It was amazing.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: It was crazy.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: I don't even know.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: I was just studying and ball is coming.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: I'm reading my keys and it's just what's happening, man.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: They started coming.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, I caught the first one in the first game against Eli Manning.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: He was trying to hit Victor Cruz on the crossing route.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Caught the second one in Minnesota.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: In week six, Teddy Bridgewater was trying to throw a double post into the end zone.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: And most of the time when they do it,
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: the safety typically takes the first post and they throw it to the double post.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: Well, we have been practicing it and studying it.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: So we knew we were, you know, and I just executed it in the game, right?
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: I let the first post go.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: And he threw the second post like he had been trained to do by their coaches.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Hey, you know, they're going to chase the first post.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: You throw the second post.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: And he threw it.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: And I caught that one.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: Then the following week,
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: I caught the big pick, one of my biggest picks of my career against Drew Brees.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: So at that point, we had week eight going to London.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: And I had already caught three interceptions.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: I was like, man, okay.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: And then coming off of that, we had two games in a row on the road.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: Was it?
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: No, we had, yeah, we had two games in a row.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: We had Arizona on the road, and then we had New England on the road.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: I called interception against Arizona, but they called it back.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: New England.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: Didn't have anything.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: So then we come back to next week.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: I think it's Thanksgiving game against Chicago.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: And I caught a pick.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: So that was number four.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: The next week we play against Tampa.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: I caught another pick.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: I should have had three of them that game.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: But I got one.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: So that was number five.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: Then we come back the next week.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: We play Minnesota.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: I catch another one.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: That was number six.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: Then we come back the next week.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: We're on the road in Chicago.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: We had clinched the,
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: I think somebody had lost on that Saturday night because
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: in December they started playing a Saturday game.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: I think Washington or somebody had lost that Saturday night.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: So we had already clinched a playoff spot.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: Played against Chicago.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: I catch another pick.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: That was number seven.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: I caught a pick in four straight games.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: That was crazy.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: That was crazy.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Create your own luck, though.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: You know, it's not luck.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: It's you're putting yourself in these positions to make play after play after play like that.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's hard to have a seven interception season without having a multi-pick game.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Most of the time when you see people get seven to ten and plus,
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: they have that one game where they probably caught two picks.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: Or maybe they have two games where they caught two picks.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: Maybe they caught one,
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: that was meaningful and then they got like a little,
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: you know, cleanup time pick at the end of the game, right?
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: You catch two.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: But to catch...
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: One pick in seven different games, and all of them were probably meaningful plays.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: All of them.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: So, you know, and that's the difference.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: I tell people all the time, like,
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: you can have a lot of plays,
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: a lot of picks,
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: a lot of things, but, you know, people really just remember what was impactful.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: you can have 10 interceptions,
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: but if they were 10 plays that were not impactful plays,
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: then people might remember,
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: oh yeah, you did have 10 picks, but they don't remember any of them.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: But you can have four interceptions,
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: but they are very high profile impactful plays and people will remember all four
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: of them.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: And to them, it seemed like, man, you always caught picks.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Man, you always was coming through in the big time moments.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: And that's what I hear a lot from the fans,
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: especially in Detroit,
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: is how, you know, when they're watching games and, you know, the moment gets big.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: It's like we're waiting for Glover to come through.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: We wait.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: Man, I knew GQ was coming through with a pick.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: And, you know,
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: so to deliver in those moments and become that guy that,
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: when there was a big play that needed to be made,
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: they were like, oh, this right here feels like GQ time.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: And then to come through in those moments,
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: a lot of them, and make a big play, that was pretty cool.
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: No doubt.
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, are you surprised, too,
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: to see your quarterback on those teams,
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: Matthew Stafford,
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: at his age,
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: winning MVPs,
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: gunning for a second Super Bowl, being discussed now as maybe an all-timer.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: He's at the top of his game.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: Still has 40 approaches here.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: You had him there in Detroit, you know, more than a decade ago.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: What stood out then with this quarterback that you're still seeing today?
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, his own talent, you know.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, he could throw the ball effortlessly, you know.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, super smart, competitive.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: And so, you know,
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: as a quarterback,
- 38:08SPEAKER_00: when you got an arm talent like that,
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: you know, That's equivalent to a DB having like 4'2 speed, right?
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: Like when you have 4'2 speed,
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: towards the end of your career when you start getting slower,
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: now you're like 4'3 speed, right?
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: You're still elite level fast, right?
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: Well, when you can throw like Stafford can throw,
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: as you get older and your arm may not be what it was, it's still an elite arm.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: But now you got the brain capacity behind it because you're experienced,
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: you know how to play, you know what you're doing.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: And so to take his arm talent and mix it with his brain talent,
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: it's not surprising that he's still playing at a high level.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's super, super, super talented guy.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, still going at it.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: And God, all this talk about your coaches, I had to Pull it up.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: It was jogging memories.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: I wrote about the switch from Patricia to Dan Campbell.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: I forgot your name came up when I sat down with Tracy Walker.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: He was reliving those Patricia days.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: Oh, man, this is fun looking back.
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: There's what Tracy said.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: He'd be like, to hell with you.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: Go fuck yourself.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: This is the way we do it.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: If you don't like it, hit the fucking road.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: And it goes on and on and on.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: And he...
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: Tracy thought you might have just retired because you didn't want to deal with him anymore.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: So how rough was that transition?
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: It sounds like a special coach, that Matt Patricia.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: Well, my time with Matt Patricia,
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: I'm going to say that I don't know if it was fair because
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: when Jim Caldwell got fired, I was going into my 10th season.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: I had just finished my ninth season.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: And so I only wanted to play 10 years.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: That's all I really wanted to play.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: So I knew at that point going into year 10 that I was going to have to have
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: a different coach because they had fired Jim Caldwell.
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: So I was either going to have a new coach in Detroit or a new coach somewhere else.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: So either way, I knew I was going to have a new coach.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: And so for me, I didn't want to start over in Detroit.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: I knew I only wanted to play one more year.
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: I don't want to start over in Detroit.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: I had a good four-year run.
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: We played five seasons, that first one with Jim Swartz.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: But then after that, we done made the playoffs twice.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: We done been in winner-take-all divisional games last week of the season against Green Bay.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: Um, you know,
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: we've elevated,
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: elevated the program a little bit and then it got rid of Jim Caldwell.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: And so now I'm just like, I don't want to start over with Matt Patricia.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: And I didn't even know Matt Patricia.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: I just knew I didn't want to start over in Detroit.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: I knew because I had always kept my house in Houston.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: I knew Houston was a place that I wanted to live.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: Um, I had started my career in Houston and I just kind of felt from
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: a business standpoint,
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: from a retirement standpoint,
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: you know what,
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: it'd be cool to end my career in Houston and I could kind of just get re-acclimated
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: into the community,
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: into the city, get your name out there a little more, yada, yada, yada.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: So I was like,
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: all right,
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: if I got to get a new coach,
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: well then let me try to go back home and I could play in Houston with a new coach
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: and
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: And so when Patricia and him got there, I didn't show up for any of the offseason stuff.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: I just basically told him, like, I wanted out.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: Like, I trade,
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: release,
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: like, but I was coming off of 2017, which was probably one of my best seasons.
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: So been very difficult for Matt Patricia to walk in there and release,
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: you know, one of your top defensive players, right?
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: So they didn't want to do it.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: So I didn't show up to the off-season program.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: I showed up to the mandatory mini-camp.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: So me and Coach Patricia didn't get off to a great start.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: And then I just kind of carried on throughout the season.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: And I really think it was just because I don't think he understood...
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: How things work.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: I think he was mimicking what he had seen, but he didn't understand how it worked.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: And what I mean is he had been in New England with Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: And what he saw is this is how Bill talks to Tom, right?
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: But I don't think he understood that Bill and Tom have been together for a long time.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: So they've built that relationship to where they can talk to each other like that.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: Because Bill now has a relationship with Tom.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: And Bill knows that if I'm going off on Tom, everybody else is going to get in line.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: I don't have to say it to the other people if I'm saying it to Tom.
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: So for Matt Patricia,
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: I think seeing how Bill and Tom probably went at it and how Bill probably called out
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: the superstars on the team, that's kind of how he came in that way.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: The problem is you haven't built a relationship with Matthew Stafford, right?
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: You haven't built a relationship with Darius Slay.
- 43:59SPEAKER_00: You haven't built a relationship with these guys and you're coming in
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: And just basically trying to talk to them how you've seen Bill talk to Tom.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: But they've won Super Bowls together.
- 44:14SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: Like, you know what I'm saying?
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like somebody with a child, right?
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: Hey, the way I talk to my child, you can't talk to my child the way I talk to my child, right?
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: Because we got a different relationship, right?
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: So I think that was one of the biggest problems.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: And that was his first time being a head coach.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: And I think he came in feeling like,
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 44:32SPEAKER_00: If I go at Stafford, if I go at those guys, then everybody else would get in line.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: Problem is you didn't have a relationship with those guys.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: So it don't come across the same way.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: And you can't point to six Lombardis in the trophy case.
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: You know, it's a little different in Detroit.
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: Tracy was quite colorful.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: I effing hated coming in.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: Guys hated it here.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: I guess Patricia would always yell 89 and one.
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: 89-1, right?
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: One guy gets out of line in training camp, got to get him out.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:10SPEAKER_01: But you put it perfectly, that's so true.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: And there's a reason,
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: like those coaches from that tree, they go elsewhere and it doesn't work, right?
- 45:18SPEAKER_00: Because that's what they're doing.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: They're trying to mimic what they've seen, but they haven't built what Bill built.
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: And so, you know,
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: they're coming in and they're just like, well, this is how it's supposed to be.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: This is what I've seen.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: This is what I've, like, that's not the reality, guys.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: You know, and also, you know, you're playing with Tom Brady.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: Tom Brady is, you know, one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
- 45:44SPEAKER_00: So, obviously, you're going to win.
- 45:47SPEAKER_00: You're going to do this and this and that.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: So, a lot of the stuff that you do is going to seem like it's great,
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: but it's only working because of, you know, Tom and the system.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: When you try to take that and put it on random regular people,
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: it probably ain't going to work that way.
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: Probably ain't going to work that way.
- 46:08SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, they struggle.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: Dan Campbell's been there a while now.
- 46:13SPEAKER_01: What do you think, Glovers?
- 46:14SPEAKER_01: Is this the year finally for the Detroit Lions to bust that door down,
- 46:20SPEAKER_01: get to a Super Bowl, maybe even win it?
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:26SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm a little skeptical this year.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: I'm a defensive back.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: So I always just kind of feel like,
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: you know, if the secondary isn't locked down, locked in, like it's tough.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: It's tough to win consistently.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: So Brian Branch and Kirby Joseph starting out on the pup list, that concerns me.
- 46:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, they're not back till probably week seven or eight if they can get back, right?
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: You know, the Kirby Joseph injury that, I mean, that concerns me.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: You know, I think he's been out since week 10 of last year.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: So he had, you know, two months at the end of the season, six months in the offseason.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: He's had eight months and he's still not back.
- 47:10SPEAKER_00: Like, what is the injury?
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: Like, what's going on, right?
- 47:14SPEAKER_00: Is he ever going to?
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: So that just kind of worries me when you look at the corner.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, the only corner on the team that I know is DJ Reed.
- 47:26SPEAKER_00: I know they got Rick Straw and they got Yasin and some of those guys,
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: but those guys haven't earned their stripes in the NFL yet.
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: Now, this is a great time for them to do it.
- 47:38SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying that it can't be done.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: Everybody gets that opportunity to earn their stripes.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: I was that same guy.
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure when I got my first start,
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: they were looking at me as, man, they got this fourth rounder.
- 47:52SPEAKER_00: You know, we never heard of him.
- 47:53SPEAKER_00: He hasn't really done much in the first three games, but he's going to get the start.
- 47:58SPEAKER_00: And, you know what I'm saying?
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: So I'm pretty sure that's how it was looked at with me, right?
- 48:03SPEAKER_00: And I was able to go out and play well and go on and start the rest of my career.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: So it happens.
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying that it can't happen.
- 48:11SPEAKER_00: It's just for me looking at it,
- 48:13SPEAKER_00: it's worrisome to say, okay, this is the secondary and we'll see.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: And it's a little different for the team.
- 48:24SPEAKER_01: You got that H on the hat right now for this podcast, that Texans defense.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: It's still a crime against football humanity that that defense of 2025 is kind
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: of like forgotten nationally.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, that could have been an all-time group.
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: 85 Bears, 2,000 Ravens.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: For this generation of football, what they were doing was special.
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: And it's hard to carry over a defense that loaded.
- 48:49SPEAKER_01: But they do have everybody coming back.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: You would think if they just get competence out of their quarterback
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: that they'll be right there, right?
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 48:58SPEAKER_01: It's tough to sustain excellence on defense.
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: But, yeah, just end it there, Glover.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, what do you see out of these Houston Texans this season with that group on D?
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: I think,
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: I was telling somebody,
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: I said, you know, I think the defense got to take it to the next level.
- 49:15SPEAKER_00: And they were like, next level, man.
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: They were all ready.
- 49:18SPEAKER_00: What do you mean?
- 49:19SPEAKER_00: I'm like, well,
- 49:20SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 49:21SPEAKER_00: when I look at it from a defensive standpoint, you know, stopping people is great.
- 49:27SPEAKER_00: Not giving up points is great.
- 49:29SPEAKER_00: The next level is how can you put 10 points on the board every game, right?
- 49:35SPEAKER_00: How can,
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: when you look at some of the best defenses in history,
- 49:39SPEAKER_00: those guys are turning the ball over and they're scoring points.
- 49:42SPEAKER_00: They're turning those sacks into sack, forced fumbles, scooping scores.
- 49:46SPEAKER_00: They're turning interceptions into pick sixes, right?
- 49:50SPEAKER_00: They're forcing turnovers already in field goal range.
- 49:53SPEAKER_00: Well, now you look up, and I get it, everybody has a job to do.
- 49:59SPEAKER_00: But if my offense only got to score 10 points and we can be at 20,
- 50:08SPEAKER_00: because we can score 10 points a game.
- 50:10SPEAKER_00: We can put ourselves in a position to where, hey, just kick the field goal.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: And we can take one turnover and score a touchdown.
- 50:20SPEAKER_00: And now, instead of us just coming out feeling like, oh, we stopping everybody.
- 50:24SPEAKER_00: No, we're not only stopping them, but we're putting the points on the board.
- 50:27SPEAKER_00: And that's how you go to the next level and become one of those super elite defenses.
- 50:31SPEAKER_00: You think back to the Ravens defense when they won it with, you know, who was the quarterback?
- 50:39SPEAKER_00: Trent Dilfer.
- 50:40SPEAKER_00: Trent Dilfer, right?
- 50:41SPEAKER_00: When they won it with Trent Dilfer.
- 50:43SPEAKER_00: Hey, man.
- 50:45SPEAKER_00: They had cornerbacks taking picks to the house.
- 50:48SPEAKER_00: Obviously, Ed was doing his thing.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: So, you know, that's what you got to be.
- 50:53SPEAKER_00: You know, that's what you want to be.
- 50:55SPEAKER_00: You want to be a defense.
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: Not only can you stop people, but you can take the ball away.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: And when you take it away, you can score and put your team in positions to score.
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: And I think if they can do that,
- 51:07SPEAKER_00: coupled with,
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 51:09SPEAKER_00: adding David Montgomery to the run game,
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: That's going to take a lot of pressure if he can stay healthy between him
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: and Woody Marks.
- 51:16SPEAKER_00: The run game should be solid.
- 51:17SPEAKER_00: Drafting tight end, tight end should be solid.
- 51:20SPEAKER_00: You know, Nico's still doing what he do.
- 51:22SPEAKER_00: Wide receiver should be solid.
- 51:24SPEAKER_00: CJ shouldn't have to do much,
- 51:26SPEAKER_00: but play action,
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: make the reads, make the throws, and let the defense go out and keep you in games.
- 51:33SPEAKER_00: And I think for quarterbacks,
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: when you feel like you don't have to go out and win the game,
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: it's a totally different feeling.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: And so to know, hey, I don't have to go win the game.
- 51:44SPEAKER_00: I just, I just can't lose the game.
- 51:46SPEAKER_00: You know, I need to make one or two big throws every game, right?
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: It's going to be a third down situation where I got to make a good play.
- 51:54SPEAKER_00: And that's what you're paid money to do, right?
- 51:57SPEAKER_00: It's going to be a situation in the game where you just got to make a play.
- 52:01SPEAKER_00: But for the most part,
- 52:02SPEAKER_00: you just got to not lose the game because it's a team game and you got
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: a really good defense.
- 52:08SPEAKER_00: So if you're ever in doubt, Hey, don't turn the ball over.
- 52:12SPEAKER_00: Trust your defense.
- 52:13SPEAKER_00: And we're just going to play the field position game because we know they're going
- 52:16SPEAKER_00: to get a stop.
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: And then we're going to get the ball back.
- 52:18SPEAKER_00: And eventually with our run game and our tight ends and our big play wide receivers,
- 52:23SPEAKER_00: we're going to put points on the board.
- 52:25SPEAKER_00: And the more points that we can put on the board,
- 52:27SPEAKER_00: it's going to be tough for them to put that many points on the board
- 52:30SPEAKER_00: against our defense.
- 52:32SPEAKER_00: And so I think that'll be the formula.
- 52:36SPEAKER_00: I think they got the makeup for it.
- 52:39SPEAKER_00: You know, they got the defense.
- 52:41SPEAKER_00: They got the pieces on offense.
- 52:43SPEAKER_00: I just got to go and do it.
- 52:45SPEAKER_00: So we'll see.
- 52:46SPEAKER_01: I love the take.
- 52:47SPEAKER_01: I haven't heard that.
- 52:48SPEAKER_01: A lot of chatter about the Houston Texans for the last seven months
- 52:52SPEAKER_01: and not many out there saying the defense has to take it from here to up there.
- 52:56SPEAKER_01: So you heard the man, Glover Quinn, bringing it.
- 53:00SPEAKER_01: That was fantastic.
- 53:01SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for hanging out this long, Glover.
- 53:04SPEAKER_01: Where can folks find you?
- 53:05SPEAKER_01: What are you up to?
- 53:06SPEAKER_01: Where do you want to send viewers and listeners here at Golong?
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: Man, you can find me.
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: I'm on social media.
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: You can find me online, any of the platforms, Facebook, Instagram, Glover Quinn.
- 53:22SPEAKER_00: Type in my name.
- 53:23SPEAKER_00: It'll pop up.

- 53:34SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that's about it.
- 53:36SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 53:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're a business man.
- 53:38SPEAKER_01: I think you were investing as a player plenty, too.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: I remember reading that at one point, right?
- 53:42SPEAKER_01: Like, you've been thinking ahead with this all.
- 53:45SPEAKER_01: GQ frames.
- 53:47SPEAKER_01: I never even gave you the bandwidth there.
- 53:50SPEAKER_01: What do you want to get into with what you're up to with your business, Glover?
- 53:53SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 53:54SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean, I just do custom framing.
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: I kind of got into it through photography and different things,
- 54:03SPEAKER_00: and it just kind of one thing led to the next and the next and
- 54:06SPEAKER_00: the next thing you know.
- 54:07SPEAKER_00: I'm like, you know what?
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: This is kind of fun.
- 54:09SPEAKER_00: This is enjoyable.
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: I love to do it.
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: And so, yeah, I do custom framing.
- 54:15SPEAKER_00: I frame jerseys, photos, art, shadow boxes, almost anything.
- 54:25SPEAKER_00: It's a custom experience.
- 54:27SPEAKER_00: It's a custom.
- 54:29SPEAKER_00: It's not really just cookie cutter, like, oh, you get this.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, you get what you want.
- 54:33SPEAKER_00: Like, let's sit and talk about what it is you want.
- 54:38SPEAKER_00: How you want to display it?
- 54:39SPEAKER_00: What does it mean to you?
- 54:41SPEAKER_00: And let's figure out how to get it done and get it framed for you.
- 54:47SPEAKER_00: So I've been doing some really cool projects,
- 54:49SPEAKER_00: some really cool things,
- 54:50SPEAKER_00: and I'm just excited to continue to grow it,
- 54:53SPEAKER_00: continue to expand it, and see where it go.
- 54:58SPEAKER_01: GQ Frames, you heard the man.
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much, Glover.
- 55:02SPEAKER_01: Hope we can do it again down the line.
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: All right, man.
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
