- 0:10Speaker 2: like feeling all kinds of whatever because you took off
- 0:14Speaker 2: this weekend and went to London to see the game. Well,
- 0:18Speaker 2: I know the time zone can be a thing. It's
- 0:20Speaker 2: only five hours. This time change thing. Do you think
- 0:24Speaker 2: they're back already?
- 0:24Speaker 3: The game was yesterday morning.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Well, remember, they're five hours ahead of us. So the
- 0:29Speaker 2: game ended. Maybe they got to Heathrow and flew back.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I mean, it's definitely very possible. I would have taken
- 0:36Speaker 2: Monday off, but that's just me. But anyway, if you're
- 0:40Speaker 2: just now getting back, thanks for listening to us. Toby
- 0:42Speaker 2: and Chili in the morning at 97.1 Wash FM on
- 0:45Speaker 2: a Monday. Why are you feeling good today? Give us
- 0:47Speaker 2: a call at 866-927-4361 and spread some joy. Why are
- 0:53Speaker 2: you feeling good this morning there, Chili?
- 0:55Speaker 4: Well, initially, I was going to say I couldn't think
- 0:57Speaker 4: of anything because the weekend plans kind of weren't what
- 1:00Speaker 4: we initially planned, which is fine.
- 1:02Speaker 3: But I just now....
- 1:04Speaker 4: Looked to uh see the forecast for this week and
- 1:08Speaker 4: it looks like we're going back to fall again because
- 1:10Speaker 4: you know how mother nature at the end of last
- 1:12Speaker 4: week was a summary and.
- 1:13Speaker 5: Whatnot got the memo and took it.
- 1:15Speaker 4: And i've begun that whole transition of the closet so
- 1:17Speaker 4: it's like i hate this in between because now there's
- 1:19Speaker 4: too many clothes in the closet i want to get
- 1:22Speaker 4: rid of i want to shift it you know what i'm.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Saying yes yes it's time for mother nature to finally
- 1:28Speaker 2: decide what season it's going to be Apparently, you did
- 1:32Speaker 2: not get the memo that fall has officially started.
- 1:36Speaker 5: But that's okay.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I'm feeling good because I took care of some life stuff.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I probably should have waited until my significant other gets
- 1:42Speaker 2: back from work-related travel.
- 1:44Speaker 5: To do this.
- 1:45Speaker 2: But, you know, I needed to go take a look
- 1:47Speaker 2: at a new ride. And I was kind of motivated
- 1:49Speaker 2: to do so, looking for a new car, because I.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Let's just say that after all the money I've spent
- 1:57Speaker 2: on repairs over the last couple of weeks.
- 2:00Speaker 5: It's a little cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.
- 2:02Speaker 2: And I will tell you that my car is in
- 2:04Speaker 2: the shop again this morning for the second half of
- 2:08Speaker 2: some repairs that needed to be done. The car runs fine.
- 2:11Speaker 5: It's great.
- 2:12Speaker 2: It just needs this to be tweaked. But it's just
- 2:15Speaker 2: it's not a cheap this. You know, it's not like
- 2:18Speaker 2: I'm under warranty. So the hunt is on. And I
- 2:22Speaker 2: spent a good time this weekend just learning and seeing
- 2:25Speaker 2: what's soon to come.
- 2:26Speaker 5: It was it was a good weekend. Anyway, you have
- 2:29Speaker 5: a good weekend. Tell us all about it. You know
- 2:31Speaker 5: the number. You know where we are.
- 2:32Speaker 2: In the meantime, hang out for the news. Top Stories
- 2:34Speaker 2: at the top of the hour. Chili, what up this morning?
- 2:38Speaker 4: Looks like a lot of folks not feeling the spirit.
- 2:42Speaker 4: I'll tell you how many people say they will not
- 2:45Speaker 4: be dressing for Halloween this year.
- 2:47Speaker 7: Top Stories, top of the hour.
- 2:52Speaker 4: The Air Force has pulled its bombers out of RAF
- 2:55Speaker 4: Fairford in England. the base that was used to strike Iran.
- 3:00Speaker 4: This move comes after an investigation into a planned terror
- 3:03Speaker 4: attack there. A 12-year-old girl was killed and three others
- 3:07Speaker 4: were wounded at a Baltimore park. This happened during a
- 3:09Speaker 4: youth football game Saturday. Police believe two men arguing over
- 3:14Speaker 4: a parking spot opened fire on each other and now
- 3:17Speaker 4: they're searching for suspects. A 13-year-old behind the wheel crashed
- 3:22Speaker 4: into a power pole in Springfield yesterday morning. The teen
- 3:26Speaker 4: and a 13-year-old passenger had minor injuries, and the drivers
- 3:29Speaker 4: are now charged with driving without a license. Police searched
- 3:35Speaker 4: 110 acres near a University of Maryland garage yesterday, but
- 3:39Speaker 4: they did not find missing student Dylan Ashar. The 22-year-old
- 3:44Speaker 4: was last seen there early Friday, and campus police want
- 3:47Speaker 4: to hear from anyone with information. While the Washington Commander
- 3:52Speaker 4: is lost to the Indianapolis Colts 30-13 in London yesterday,
- 3:57Speaker 4: and quarterback Marcus Mariota left in the first quarter with
- 4:00Speaker 4: an apparent right knee injury, rookie Ethan Kaliakmanis took over.
- 4:06Speaker 4: And it looks like a lot of us are really
- 4:08Speaker 4: skipping costumes this Halloween. A new survey says 76% say
- 4:12Speaker 4: they're not dressing up. Now, if you are, you may
- 4:16Speaker 4: want to rethink the whole sexy thing. which 29% want retired. Plus,
- 4:22Speaker 4: they're not a fan of pirates, jokers, and cowboys. Forecast
- 4:26Speaker 4: for today, sunny and breezy with highs around 70 later.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Right now, 58 in Clifton.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Don't forget, you get your top stories right around the
- 4:35Speaker 2: top of the hour, generally right around 10 past every hour,
- 4:39Speaker 2: weekday mornings with Toby and Chili in the morning at
- 4:42Speaker 2: 97.1 Wash FM, which means your next news is at 610,
- 4:46Speaker 2: one hour from now-ish. Anyway, stay right there because we
- 4:50Speaker 2: want to talk about how you're doing on this Monday morning.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Your morning mindset as we start a brand new week
- 4:56Speaker 2: on the way.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Who knows?
- 4:57Speaker 2: It might just help. And it's time on a Monday
- 5:02Speaker 2: morning for your morning mindset with Toby and Shirley in
- 5:05Speaker 2: the morning at 97.1 Wash FM.
- 5:07Speaker 8: What's your morning mindset, you ask? Well, it's all about you,
- 5:10Speaker 8: for one. Well, technically, your headspace and how you're feeling.
- 5:14Speaker 8: And if you're not motivated or inspired to be your
- 5:17Speaker 8: better self today, we try to find a quote to
- 5:18Speaker 8: help you get there.
- 5:19Speaker 5: That's right.
- 5:20Speaker 2: And today it comes from Mindy Kaling, incredible actor, incredible director.
- 5:25Speaker 2: And she reminds us that you don't have to be scared.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Don't be scared if you don't do things in the
- 5:34Speaker 2: right order. Don't be scared if you don't do things
- 5:38Speaker 2: in the right order. See, life, your life, it does
- 5:41Speaker 2: not have to match somebody else's timeline.
- 5:46Speaker 5: It's different. You're different. So don't worry about it.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And if you do things in the right order, For
- 5:53Speaker 2: somebody else, you're not doing things in the right order,
- 5:55Speaker 2: maybe for you. So don't be scared if you don't
- 5:57Speaker 2: do things in what the world says is the right order.
- 6:01Speaker 2: You do you, like Mindy Kaling reminds us this morning.
- 6:04Speaker 5: That's your morning mindset. March to the beat of your
- 6:06Speaker 5: own drummer, all right?
- 6:07Speaker 2: It's 97.1 Wash FM, a good quote for the start
- 6:11Speaker 2: of a brand new week, and hopefully it helps to
- 6:13Speaker 2: set the course for great things to come in your world.
- 6:17Speaker 2: We're Toby and Chili in the morning. It's 97.1 Wash FM.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Now that you've got your morning mindset, hang out for
- 6:23Speaker 2: a few minutes because.
- 6:25Speaker 4: In Sweden, their secret to a work-life balance is something
- 6:29Speaker 4: called FICA. And once you hear what it is, you're
- 6:32Speaker 4: going to wish we did it here, or maybe not.
- 6:34Speaker 5: Good morning.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Toby and Chili in the morning, 97.1 Wash FM on
- 6:39Speaker 2: a Monday. Learning new things on a Monday morning is
- 6:41Speaker 2: very important because something you learned today might carry you
- 6:45Speaker 2: into a conversation later today or sometime this week. And
- 6:48Speaker 2: this is one of those things. And it involves the
- 6:52Speaker 2: word fika.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Well, yeah, and it's Swedish. So over in Sweden.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Mm-hmm. Their answer to a good work-life balance is their
- 7:00Speaker 4: tradition of fika, which is a deliberate pause in their
- 7:03Speaker 4: workday to enjoy a coffee or snack or some real
- 7:06Speaker 4: human connection.
- 7:07Speaker 3: And really, it's not about the coffee or the snacks.
- 7:09Speaker 4: It's about stepping away from the desk and slowing down
- 7:12Speaker 4: and being present and giving your mind a little break. Now,
- 7:15Speaker 4: I'm not sure these people are leaving campus, so to speak,
- 7:18Speaker 4: to do this, but... They're taking a moment, intentional moment.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Now, this is not like a fundatory excursion or a
- 7:26Speaker 2: fundatory thing every day. When I say fundatory, you know,
- 7:29Speaker 2: that's like when somebody at the office decides it's good
- 7:32Speaker 2: to have time to recreate.
- 7:35Speaker 4: It says in this article that this whole FICA thing
- 7:38Speaker 4: is so ingrained in their culture over there that workplaces
- 7:41Speaker 4: do build it into the workday, some of these places.
- 7:44Speaker 2: So it's like more of a siesta in the Spanish culture.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know.
- 7:48Speaker 5: In the Italian culture.
- 7:49Speaker 4: I mean, if you're a workhorse, even though you desperately
- 7:52Speaker 4: need something like this, I would see how you could
- 7:54Speaker 4: be annoyed by it.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Because if you're in a zone, you don't want to fika.
- 7:58Speaker 3: You want to finish. Yeah, that's a good point. I'm
- 8:00Speaker 3: almost there with this project. Please don't.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I mean, if you go make me fika and I'm
- 8:05Speaker 2: in the zone, you're going to you're not going to
- 8:07Speaker 2: reduce my stress. You're going to increase it, which is
- 8:10Speaker 2: going to lead me to being anxious, which will lead
- 8:13Speaker 2: to burnout and it will lead to stress. And then
- 8:16Speaker 2: I'll just be all poopy pants around the people who
- 8:18Speaker 2: made me go fika this for an hour in the
- 8:20Speaker 2: middle of the day.
- 8:21Speaker 4: I do appreciate, though, that there are people that do
- 8:24Speaker 4: this because it's important to see each other as humans
- 8:27Speaker 4: in the workplace and to have that coffee and to
- 8:29Speaker 4: catch up and then go back to the project at hand.
- 8:32Speaker 5: That is right.
- 8:34Speaker 2: And now you've learned everything you need to know about
- 8:36Speaker 2: the Swedish fang called fika, the deliberate pause. It's 97.1

- 10:16Speaker 4: on a medical plane that vanished off New England. The

- 10:29Speaker 4: is under investigation after an alleged altercation with a student
- 10:33Speaker 4: at Horizon Elementary in Sterling. 49-year-old Valerie Bowen was issued

- 11:11Speaker 4: Well, a small study found that people who ate a
- 11:13Speaker 4: handful of walnuts with dinner for eight weeks slept better
- 11:18Speaker 4: and they felt less drowsy during the day. Walnuts have
- 11:23Speaker 4: melatonin plus a nutrient your body turns into it. Forecast
- 11:28Speaker 4: for today, it's going to be nice later. Sunny and breezy.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Highs around 70. Right now, though, 58 in Chevy Chase.
- 11:35Speaker 2: And that is the news. Top stories at the top
- 11:38Speaker 2: of the hour. So, let's get right here at 97.1
- 11:40Speaker 2: Wash FM. Toby and Chili on a Monday morning coming up.
- 11:44Speaker 2: You have any travel mishaps over the summer? Maybe you
- 11:47Speaker 2: had something that happened once upon a time and you
- 11:49Speaker 2: still think about it and it still causes you stress. Well,
- 11:53Speaker 2: these travel mishaps are costed. The average traveler. Now we
- 11:58Speaker 2: know how much on average. And did you hear about
- 12:03Speaker 2: the mishaps that might have happened nearby recently? If not,
- 12:07Speaker 2: we're talking about it. Don't go anywhere.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Travelers, now we know.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Now we know the average cost of travel mishaps.
- 12:18Speaker 5: 97.1 Watch FM.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Toby and Chili in the morning. And it turns out it's, well,
- 12:22Speaker 2: it's quite a chunk of change.
- 12:24Speaker 3: 2,500 bucks. That's right.
- 12:26Speaker 4: That's what it's costing people. 72% of people, by the way,
- 12:29Speaker 4: according to a survey, experienced some kind of major mishap
- 12:33Speaker 4: while they were traveling. And some of this stuff could be, okay,
- 12:36Speaker 4: weather disrupting your trip, getting sick or injured, getting lost
- 12:40Speaker 4: during your travel. It's a lot of stuff that could
- 12:43Speaker 4: go sideways for sure.
- 12:44Speaker 6: Hmm.
- 12:45Speaker 3: And even recently, you.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Know, the whole Ocean's Calling festival that got canceled in
- 12:50Speaker 4: Ocean City, Maryland.
- 12:51Speaker 5: Was that last weekend? Yeah, a couple of weeks ago.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Two weeks ago.
- 12:54Speaker 4: But people were left with loss because their Airbnbs or
- 13:00Speaker 4: the hotel or whatever they were staying at, they weren't
- 13:02Speaker 4: going to reimburse them the entire amount because you can't
- 13:05Speaker 4: cancel that last second.
- 13:07Speaker 8: Right.
- 13:07Speaker 3: And weather can't be the reason, right?
- 13:09Speaker 2: And travel insurance doesn't cover acts of God like weather.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Weather, yeah.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Weather.
- 13:16Speaker 5: Well, right.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Well, first of all, if you were supposed to go
- 13:20Speaker 2: to Oceans Calling, sorry.
- 13:22Speaker 3: I know.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Hopefully the country festival over the weekend didn't go that bad.
- 13:26Speaker 5: But yeah, I mean, that's that's that stinks.
- 13:30Speaker 2: It does stink because I can think of a lot
- 13:32Speaker 2: of things on holiday I could do with twenty five
- 13:35Speaker 2: hundred dollars.
- 13:35Speaker 3: But I mean, it's a common thing.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Haven't you ever showed up to a place and it
- 13:40Speaker 4: looked nothing like the photo? Or we've signed up for
- 13:43Speaker 4: excursions like when we go on trips and what they
- 13:46Speaker 4: promise you is one thing. And then you get the
- 13:49Speaker 4: Teemu version of it, which is like, OK, this is
- 13:51Speaker 4: what you call lunch.
- 13:52Speaker 2: It's just crackers and cheese. This is not a rope course.
- 13:56Speaker 2: What are you kidding me? That's a zip line. No,
- 13:58Speaker 2: I'm not getting on that.
- 13:59Speaker 5: Are you nuts?
- 14:00Speaker 4: Yeah, no.
- 14:01Speaker 2: No, it's a complete disappointment. It's totally a letdown. And
- 14:07Speaker 2: there's really no way to get your money back. And
- 14:10Speaker 2: that stinks. Have you had this experience? Tell us about it.
- 14:14Speaker 8: 866-927-4361.
- 14:14Speaker 5: You had a travel mishap.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Maybe it felt like bait and switch or something. something
- 14:21Speaker 2: went wrong and you wanted that money back but you
- 14:24Speaker 2: found out you couldn't get it let's get into it
- 14:26Speaker 2: coming up with toby and chilling in the morning 866-927-4361
- 14:29Speaker 2: just to recap it's 97.1 wash fm toby and chilling
- 14:35Speaker 2: in the morning these travel mishaps are costing you as
- 14:38Speaker 2: a average traveler nearly twenty five hundred dollars when they
- 14:43Speaker 2: happen it's no good.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Things like bad weather disrupting your trip, a la Ocean's Calling,
- 14:50Speaker 4: getting sick or injured, getting lost during your travel.
- 14:53Speaker 3: The list goes on and on. So it got us wondering, right?
- 14:56Speaker 4: Like, what is something you booked for a trip that
- 14:58Speaker 4: looked nothing of what you actually got?
- 15:02Speaker 5: Good morning in Bethesda, Ricky.
- 15:05Speaker 6: I booked a hotel because the picture showed this huge
- 15:08Speaker 6: rooftop pool and a really nice bar.
- 15:10Speaker 5: It sounds like it has the perfect amenities for anyone.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Yeah, so what happened when you got there?
- 15:16Speaker 6: It turns out those pictures were from a sister property
- 15:18Speaker 6: three blocks away, and our hotel had a pool the
- 15:21Speaker 6: size of a kiddie pool and a vending machine.
- 15:24Speaker 4: That's definitely inconvenient, but if you really did have access
- 15:28Speaker 4: to the sister property, it's not the worst thing.
- 15:31Speaker 5: Glass half full, you had a vending machine.
- 15:33Speaker 2: If it had good stuff in it, I mean, that's
- 15:35Speaker 2: a plus, right?
- 15:37Speaker 3: Please, that's stretching.
- 15:38Speaker 2: It's never closed. It's always open, as long as you
- 15:40Speaker 2: have money or your credit card, depending on what it takes.
- 15:43Speaker 5: Thanks, Ricky.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Have a great day in Bethesda. Julian, Alexandria City.
- 15:48Speaker 9: I booked a cozy cabin in the woods for my birthday,
- 15:51Speaker 9: and the pictures made it look secluded and romantic.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Bounch.
- 15:54Speaker 8: Bounch.
- 15:55Speaker 10: Bounch.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Why do I hear a butt coming?
- 16:00Speaker 9: We got there and realized it was basically a shed
- 16:03Speaker 9: in someone's backyard. And the owner's chickens were literally outside
- 16:06Speaker 9: our bedroom window at 6 a.m.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Well, that's a natural alarm clock. You were up with
- 16:11Speaker 2: the sun.
- 16:12Speaker 3: No, no, no. Roosters wake you up. Chickens don't. They
- 16:15Speaker 3: just lay eggs.
- 16:16Speaker 4: But they see if you could keep those eggs, that
- 16:18Speaker 4: may have been a good thing.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Because had I been in your situation, ma'am, I would

- 22:06Speaker 4: Because it is lunes, we like to share a story
- 22:09Speaker 4: that'll make your Monday. A Facebook post and a closet
- 22:13Speaker 4: full of old shoes turned into something much bigger in
- 22:16Speaker 4: Montgomery County.
- 22:19Speaker 2: And now on this Monday morning, it's time for a
- 22:21Speaker 2: story we think might just make your Monday with 97.1
- 22:25Speaker 2: Wash FM. Toby and Chili in the morning. It started
- 22:27Speaker 2: with a Facebook post and a closet full of old shoes.
- 22:32Speaker 2: And it turned into something much bigger in Montgomery County.
- 22:36Speaker 4: So Glenn Fellman works for Seasonal Roots, and that's a
- 22:39Speaker 4: home delivery service that basically brings farmers market style groceries
- 22:44Speaker 4: to doorsteps across Maryland and Virginia. So a couple of
- 22:47Speaker 4: months ago, he sees that post and it's from a
- 22:49Speaker 4: student led nonprofit called Lift Every Step asking for shoe donations.
- 22:54Speaker 4: And he had a closet full of shoes his grown
- 22:58Speaker 4: kids had left behind. So he planned to chip in.
- 23:00Speaker 5: And then he thought bigger.
- 23:02Speaker 2: See, Seasonal Roots, they make about 1,800 deliveries a week.
- 23:06Speaker 2: The company asked customers to leave unwanted shoes and bags
- 23:10Speaker 2: on the porch. Drivers picked them up along with the veggies.
- 23:14Speaker 2: About 150 drivers joined in from Columbia, Maryland, all the
- 23:18Speaker 2: way down to Hamden Roads in Virginia.
- 23:21Speaker 4: And that haul filled more than three huge shipping bins
- 23:26Speaker 4: with at least 500 pairs of shoes. And here's a bonus.
- 23:30Speaker 4: Customers also kicked in $ 915. And by the way, Lift
- 23:33Speaker 4: Every Step started this year.
- 23:38Speaker 2: By Montgomery County siblings Brianna and Brandon Frank.
- 23:43Speaker 4: Wow.
- 23:43Speaker 2: And those shoes, well, they're headed to students at Title
- 23:46Speaker 2: I schools across the DMV.
- 23:47Speaker 5: That's awesome.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Because everybody needs some good shoes, good kicks to go
- 23:51Speaker 2: to school.
- 23:52Speaker 5: In, and now they've got them.
- 23:54Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Thanks to everything Lift Every Step is doing. And when
- 23:59Speaker 2: a brother and a sister just start something like this,
- 24:02Speaker 2: how can that story not make your Monday?
- 24:05Speaker 4: And then you marry that with another group like Seasonal Roots.
- 24:08Speaker 4: You've got incredible outreach throughout the area.
- 24:12Speaker 5: Vegetables, shoes.
- 24:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:15Speaker 2: All starts with an idea, and they've all had a
- 24:19Speaker 2: great one. Thanks, guys, for a story that really does
- 24:22Speaker 2: make our Monday.
- 24:23Speaker 5: I want to read it again.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Maybe you want to share it with somebody who might
- 24:27Speaker 2: be inspired by the story. Well, you'll find it at

- 28:53Speaker 2: I'd never slept on a train before. I'd never ridden
