- 0:07Lynn's the lead editor for content at Kelley Blue
- 0:21But no matter the platform, Lynn's got a great presence and
- 0:25a no nonsense approach that really puts her in a class of 1.
- 0:30Be warned, this one clocks in at 2 hours, but I promise it's
- 0:33worth listening to. The end.
- 0:34And really, we were just getting going.
- 0:36If you like what you hear, let your enthusiast friends know and
- 0:39make sure you follow, subscribe, rate and review.
- 0:44Everyone seems to have a car podcast these days and it's this
- 0:47support that keeps independent show like ours going strong.
- 0:51But back to the show. It's a fun one.
- 0:53It's Lindsay, it's me, it's Lynn Woodward, and it's that car
- 0:57show. Well, welcome back to this
- 1:00week's episode of that car show. I'm Lindsay and I'm here with
- 1:04Ryan and I'm so excited that we have my good friend Lynn
- 1:07Woodward joining us tonight. Hi, Lynn.
- 1:10Hi, Thanks so much for being on. Thank you guys for.
- 1:14Having me. Yeah.
- 1:17So for those who don't know, Lynn and I met a few years ago
- 1:20actually on the set of Jay and Nicole Ryan's podcast, Late
- 1:23Night Playset. Lynn was scheduled to be on and
- 1:26I very spontaneously ended up joining her on the episode and
- 1:30we had so much fun. And then we were at Goodwood
- 1:33together later that year and we've been lucky to have lots of
- 1:38fun adventures between then and now.
- 1:40Lynn is currently the Lead Editor for Content at Kelley
- 1:44Blue Book where she develops rights and is the on camera host
- 1:48for their automotive video content and reviews.
- 1:52She is also a prolific freelance writer and her work has appeared
- 1:57in some small publications that you might have heard of
- 1:59including The New York Times, Motor Trend, Haggerty Drivers
- 2:03Club, Motor One Auto Week, and The Drive to name just a few.
- 2:08And she is currently restoring a Porsche 912, which I have been
- 2:13lucky enough to see a few times, and it's been an amazing journey
- 2:16to follow. Lynn is hilarious.
- 2:19She's genuine, she's authentic, and she is a true enthusiast.
- 2:23And she's such a positive force in the Automotive World.
- 2:26And I consider myself lucky to call her my friend.
- 2:29And I'm so excited for our audience to get to know her
- 2:31better. So thank you for coming on.
- 2:33I'm going to just leave right now after that because I don't
- 2:37want to ruin everything that you just said by actually talking.
- 2:41Right. And thanks so much.
- 2:43That's all we got this week. We'll see you next week.
- 2:47No, thank you guys so much for having me.
- 2:50Lindsay, it's so nice to see you.
- 2:51I feel like it's been been a while since the holidays and
- 2:54Ryan, it's really great to meet you.
- 2:56And yeah, I always love new voices in the automotive
- 2:59industry. It's really important and
- 3:02everybody has such a great story and they're all different and so
- 3:05it's really fun to come and share and hear other people.
- 3:07So thanks for having me on. Yes, this is a long time coming.
- 3:11And like you said, I feel it's been way too long since we've
- 3:13seen each other in person. So this is a great way to hang
- 3:16out when we're not in the same place.
- 3:18But yeah, I think the last time. Was our our dinner at at Matzah
- 3:24will at will never ever be recreated.
- 3:27Not if you're. Like engaged.
- 3:31We can't top it for sure. So we the first time we hung
- 3:35out, just the two of us, we went to is it Pizza Mozza in LA,
- 3:40which is a Nancy Silverton restaurant and we somehow
- 3:44managed to be there when Nancy herself was actually there,
- 3:47which we we were like, it's a sign from above.
- 3:50Yes, exactly, we were. Eating food and we were like, Oh
- 3:54my gosh, Nancy, Nancy's here. Like, like she even noticed us
- 3:59or like we were like, we were just no starstruck.
- 4:02We're like she's Oh my gosh, she's here, she's here, she's
- 4:04here. Like act cool.
- 4:05It was very cool and Dagger, we were both like a.
- 4:07Piece of sauce on your face like stop.
- 4:09It was amazing. That's awesome.
- 4:12It's easier get your get it together.
- 4:16Straighten up. Just both.
- 4:17Houch at the bar. Come on, what's wrong with you
- 4:20Really fast? We're in the presence of
- 4:22culinary greatness here. Like, yeah, we definitely were.
- 4:25Like, what do we do? And then, like you said, like
- 4:28she doesn't know us. We don't have to do anything.
- 4:30And look at us, I said. Just pay your bill and get out.
- 4:33I got. You see this line?
- 4:37Come on. Right.
- 4:38Yeah. So no, that was hilarious.
- 4:40But I think that was that dinner was so emblematic of, like, what
- 4:44it's like to be your friend, Lynn, because you're so present.
- 4:48And you commented later, you know, Hey, nobody.
- 4:51Neither of us even thought to take out our phones to check
- 4:55them, let alone take a picture. But I think that's one of the
- 4:58things that makes you so special is you're so in the moment and
- 5:01present and when you're with someone, you're really with
- 5:04them. And that is, you know, I'm very
- 5:07lucky to have experienced that. Thank you.
- 5:10I do think in this day and age, I mean, we're so, I think we're
- 5:13so bombarded by so many different things and in so many
- 5:17different places. And then there's this.
- 5:19And it's like, and you know, as someone who grew up without
- 5:23that, I feel like I met a probably a quite a, an
- 5:26advantage, I think to a lot of, you know, younger people who
- 5:30like, that's how they're, they're just brains are wired so
- 5:32differently than than ours were, or that mine certainly was
- 5:35having grown up in the 70s and the 80s.
- 5:37And, and I think I try and I listen, I'm just as addicted as
- 5:41the next person. I've set the limits and I've got
- 5:44the things and the like. It's like, but you know, I think
- 5:47it, the, the older I get, the more important it feels to
- 5:51really make really the sincere connections with people and to
- 5:56get off of the phone and to maybe not watch TV.
- 5:59And I've been reading so much more and I, I've taken up
- 6:02knitting so that if I'm talking on the phone or I'm watching a
- 6:06show that I'm not super engaged with in my brain, I'm instead of
- 6:10scrolling, I'm now making something with my hands and it
- 6:15feels, it feels like a good move.
- 6:19Yeah, I feel like that's the right direction.
- 6:22I actually also took up knitting a few years ago and it is
- 6:25amazing. I'm so.
- 6:27Terrible at it in this blanket. Oh my gosh, the number of times
- 6:34where I would make and I found, you know, this scarf and to call
- 6:38it a pattern would be way overstating.
- 6:40And it was a technique and you made it as wide or as narrow as
- 6:43you wanted. But the number of holes in my
- 6:46first ones were I'm like. So many.
- 6:47Drops going to tie this together and no one will notice.
- 6:50But you're doing it. Right, doing it and I'm I've
- 6:53also pre moth eaten it because I've got so many stitches that
- 6:57it's like it's like pick out a little peekaboo hole.
- 7:01It's crazy. That's, I think we call that new
- 7:03vintage where I call it a Moss, yeah.
- 7:08I'm intimidated by just the idea of it, right?
- 7:11So I would never try. I will never try.
- 7:13I'll never try just because it's.
- 7:14Never say never, Ryan. I know, never say like now I
- 7:18feel like the knitting needles have been.
- 7:19What I need? I feel like the.
- 7:21Crochet is more your jam crochet.
- 7:23It's like a needle point, but you know, it's less.
- 7:26Yeah. Well, the beautiful thing is
- 7:28that the yarn doesn't judge so. Yeah.
- 7:31I don't know, I feel like maybe the knitting needle challenge
- 7:33has been thrown and right. This time next year I want
- 7:38blankets for all and then like Christmas, everyone gets a
- 7:42blanket. We're gonna, we're gonna meet
- 7:43back here in a year. We all have to show our Afghans
- 7:46that we've knitted. Don't get your hopes up, but I'm
- 7:50in I'm. In I found like just a little
- 7:51like a little koozie for like a like your beer or something.
- 7:55Now we're talking. Yeah, I think I can wrap my head
- 7:57around that, right? Start small, right?
- 8:01Yeah. Oh my gosh.
- 8:02Well, so you mentioned people's stories and I think that's, I
- 8:06think you have one of the most interesting and unique, you
- 8:10know, paths into the automotive industry and automotive writing.
- 8:15I know writing has been a through line in your career, but
- 8:18the automotive element was not always there.
- 8:20So I would love for you to share how like how you got into the
- 8:25Automotive World because I think it's so interesting.
- 8:27Yeah, I mean, I'll kind of give you the 30,000 foot view.
- 8:30I started off, you know, I've wanted to be a writer for a
- 8:33really long time and and I I as AI think as a young person, I
- 8:38just never thought I was good. I never thought I was smart
- 8:40enough like and I because I always thought, oh, writer like
- 8:44that is such a glamorous sounding job and that is
- 8:46amazing. And for me it was.
- 8:49I was very intimidated just by the, my own idea of it because I
- 8:53thought you had to be super smart and super like
- 8:55knowledgeable about subject matter in order to, to be a
- 8:58writer. And so I, I went to school for
- 9:01writing. I went to school for creative
- 9:02writing. I went to grad school for
- 9:03creative writing and I had struggled for a really long time
- 9:07to even know like, what do I want to write?
- 9:09Like there are so many different options and, and directions that
- 9:12you could go. And by the time I got out of
- 9:15grad school, I just thought, well, now I don't even know what
- 9:18I'd write about because all I've done is be a student in school.
- 9:22And I thought, well, I'll go get a job.
- 9:24And so I, I landed in advertising and I wasn't writing
- 9:28copy. I landed as an account.
- 9:30I was on the account management side because I had been in the
- 9:35entertainment industry when I was a kid.
- 9:37I was, I was an actor when I was like a little kid from about the
- 9:40age of 17 until about No 7 till about 1317.
- 9:45God, no. And so I had been around movies
- 9:48and, and the television and theater.
- 9:51Both of my parents danced on Broadway when I was when I was
- 9:54born in New York. They were both dancers.
- 9:57And so I've come from a very like show business background.
- 10:01And so I thought, well, advertising is kind of like you
- 10:04making little teeny movies every, you know, every couple of
- 10:07months. And and so it just seemed like a
- 10:09natural fit. And it was for a long time
- 10:11because it gave me an opportunity.
- 10:13I was living in San Francisco and even though I grew up in LA,
- 10:17it gave me an opportunity to, to kind of grow up away from my
- 10:20family and, and to become my own person and, and to really just
- 10:24live life as a 20 something person.
- 10:28And I had a great time and we worked our butts off and we, you
- 10:32know, you party hard and you work hard and you're like, I can
- 10:35do that. And then one day you're like,
- 10:38I'm exhausted and I'm in my 30s. What's happening?
- 10:42And that that need to write had kept like, like nudging me and
- 10:47needling me. And so I moved back down to Los
- 10:49Angeles and I started taking screen writing classes because I
- 10:54really, I really wanted to be like a movie writer.
- 10:57And I thought, well, I've been around movies and I love movies
- 11:00and I love production. So there's the, there's the
- 11:03connection of what do I write? And so I, I went to UCLA
- 11:08extension and I started taking television comedy writing
- 11:12classes And I was like, this is it, this is great sitcom
- 11:16perfect. That's going to be so amazing.
- 11:18And I'm, I feel like I'm funny, ha ha, ha.
- 11:20And it turns out that is like almost like, I don't know if
- 11:27it's harder to become the president of the United States
- 11:30or be put on a staff of a, of a television comedy.
- 11:35It's a really insular world. You have to know somebody to
- 11:40know like, oh, my uncle runs the show.
- 11:43So I'm going to become, it's like the advice I always got
- 11:46there, Like, we'll just go be a like a showrunner's assistant.
- 11:49And I'm like, well, duh, but how do I get that job?
- 11:52Because that's always, there's always the nepotism that you
- 11:56hear about. Yeah, you still have to know
- 11:58somebody whichever way you slice it. 100% and I felt like my, you
- 12:02know, my writing was decent. I, I, I got good, I got, I got
- 12:07good like sort of comments back on some of my scripts and but it
- 12:11was just AI mean. It was like clearly not
- 12:13happening. I was just like ramming my head
- 12:15against a brick wall and I was really frustrated one day
- 12:19because I had left advertising to try and pursue writing full
- 12:23time and I was broke. I think I've had, I think I have
- 12:27like $100 in the bank. I mean, I had nothing.
- 12:29It was either live in my car or sell my car.
- 12:32And in LA the second is not an option.
- 12:35Right. And I genuinely didn't know what
- 12:37to do and I reached out to a friend of mine who I used to
- 12:40work in advertising with and she said look go back into
- 12:45advertising but just freelance. And she gave me 3 names of
- 12:50people to talk to. And so just go do project
- 12:54management stuff short term, long term, whatever, make some
- 12:57money and then take some time off work for a month and then
- 13:01write for two months. And then we're, and I was like,
- 13:03oh, that seems like a great, what a great solution.
- 13:06So while the three people and two of them hired me instantly,
- 13:10one for five days and I managed to make enough money that I, I
- 13:14could put some money in the bank and I didn't have to, I didn't
- 13:16have to, you know, abandoned my apartment or, you know, like
- 13:22steal from my parents and, and all the things I know, right.
- 13:27And then the next people who hired me, this lady was like,
- 13:30well, we have this thing. It's five months and I was like
- 13:335 months sounds great like I'll work for five months yes 100%
- 13:37and I was like, but I've never heard this is not an ad agency.
- 13:40I was like this place was called the Enthusiast network and I'm
- 13:43like, I don't know what that is. I don't know what y'all do, but
- 13:47it looks like there's either cars or surfing like and and
- 13:50magazines like I don't I don't know what maggots like what are
- 13:54you what? And she said, well it's this
- 13:56event that we're doing an on site activation for and I'm
- 14:00like, I've never heard of one of those.
- 14:02I have no idea what that is, right?
- 14:04He said. It's.
- 14:06For the automaker Infinity, and it's at this event called the
- 14:09Concorde de la Gas. And I was like, oh, that sounds
- 14:12really fancy. I like cars.
- 14:15Infinity's cool. Like I don't know how to order a
- 14:18cocktail napkin, but I'm your gal.
- 14:20And so she hired me without even meeting me.
- 14:23And the next five months I was literally at the epicenter of
- 14:27Motor Trend, automobile, hot rod truck trend, like all of these
- 14:32like, like these amazing magazines and surrounded just by
- 14:38car people and edit, you know, magazine editors and, and just
- 14:42see, I was like thrown into this world that I was like, what is
- 14:45this? It's like walking through the
- 14:48wardrobe and Narnia and you're like, oh, hey, this is awesome.
- 14:54And I spent five months helping put together this program.
- 14:57And then she's like, well, I really need you to come up and
- 14:59like, help me work the program. And I go up and I'm at Pebble
- 15:03Beach and I'm just a noob. I've never even, like, I, in my
- 15:07wildest dreams, I could never have imagined that such an event
- 15:10existed. My dad had a couple of classic
- 15:13Porsche Speedsters when I was a kid, and I fell in love with
- 15:16those cars. I couldn't learn how to drive
- 15:18fast enough. I would sit right seat with my
- 15:21mom in her toy in her Corolla hatchback SR5.
- 15:25And I was like, well, let me shift and she'd be like, OK, now
- 15:29third. And then and then after a while
- 15:31I would just hear the engine and I was like, OK, I need to get
- 15:33into, I need to go into second now.
- 15:35And now I need to go into the 4th.
- 15:36And they'll say, here we are. And she was just like, OK,
- 15:39great. So I'm shifting this car and I'm
- 15:41learning how to drive and I'm understanding the dynamics of
- 15:43all of this stuff when I'm a very young person.
- 15:46My dad has these amazing cars that I just absolutely fell in
- 15:49love with. And it felt like this, this like
- 15:52just sort of kind of all fell together.
- 15:55I go to this event and I'm just like wandering around.
- 15:58My eyes are like as big as the moon.
- 16:01And I was just like, what is this magical plea?
- 16:08It was like, I'm staying at the crappiest hotel, and there's
- 16:15like, McLaren's and Aston Martin's in the parking lot.
- 16:19And I was like, this is heaven. Like, I died and went to some
- 16:22heaven. And it wasn't that long after
- 16:24that. They're like, we really want to
- 16:25hire you as a project manager. And I'm like, no, I want to be a
- 16:29writer. Like, that's why I left
- 16:30advertising. And it wasn't too long after
- 16:33that until one of the editors, Ilana, share.
- 16:36You know, Ilana, she said to me, she's like, we don't have enough
- 16:39women in this business. She's like, have you ever
- 16:41thought about writing about cars?
- 16:43And I was like, yeah, I thought about it like, I've been
- 16:46surrounded by this, and I would kill to, like, write one article
- 16:50about a car. And it was like, she gave me my
- 16:53first opportunity. And I'll be so forever grateful
- 16:55to her because after that, like, this whole world just exploded
- 17:02around me. And I had a lot to learn.
- 17:05I knew about cars, but I didn't know about cars.
- 17:09And so I had some people who I trusted who I sent them my, my
- 17:14raw copy. And I was like, please do I
- 17:16sound like an idiot? And they're like, Oh, you said
- 17:19that totally wrong. Like, that's not how you would
- 17:21say that. And I understood the mechanics
- 17:23of what I was saying, but I didn't know the language because
- 17:26this is we like learning a new language.
- 17:28And it was like, it was suddenly like all of the things that I
- 17:32had done in my life previously all just sort of fell together
- 17:36like pieces of a puzzle. And then when I got the job at
- 17:39Kelley Blue Book, I freelanced for about a year and a half.
- 17:42And then I got the job at Kelley Blue And I was like, oh, damn, I
- 17:50don't want to be on camera. I'm such a, like, an introverted
- 17:53person. And I don't want, like, people
- 17:56judge me. And that makes me uncomfortable.
- 17:58And I'm like, I already hate myself so much because I'm just
- 18:01like. But that really was that moment
- 18:04where I thought, OK, I see now how every single thing in my
- 18:08life had LED up to that moment. There you go.
- 18:11Yeah. And I thought, what a beautiful
- 18:13thing that was. And that was 10 years ago.
- 18:17That's incredible. And I mean it's like the
- 18:20serendipity in your story and it, you know, it was not like, I
- 18:24think it makes it even more beautiful.
- 18:25It was not always an easy path like it was hard fought.
- 18:31I was hands of beans like it was.
- 18:33It was really hard. And I was 35.
- 18:37I left advertising when I was 40 and I was like, whoa.
- 18:42I went from a person making a really excellent salary, like
- 18:46into the six figures, like doing great.
- 18:48And then I went and I did get one job as a script supervisor
- 18:53on an animated kids show. And so I was, I was just like,
- 18:58this is it. I made it.
- 18:59Oh my God, I did it. I did it.
- 19:00Here I am. And I would go into my boss
- 19:03would like scream at me to come into his office and he wouldn't
- 19:07even look up at what he, from what he was doing.
- 19:09He would hand me his dirty, he would hand out the, the, the
- 19:13lunch plate that he had his sandwich on and he's like, could
- 19:17you do something with this? And I was like in my life, like
- 19:24now I'm just your slave. I'm handling.
- 19:27The dishes I was like. How about you bend over and I'll
- 19:31put it. In the park, I find a place for
- 19:33it. Yeah, I.
- 19:33Found a place right for it. It was a great humbling
- 19:36experience. And I think even as a 40, I
- 19:40think I was 42 at the time and I was like, whoa, man, like this
- 19:44is this is rough. But I needed that.
- 19:48I, I needed that to sort of to build myself back up and to
- 19:52feel, you know, to just be like, no, it's OK.
- 19:54You got to work. You got to work hard for this.
- 19:57Nobody gives it out for free. And it's, I just got to a place.
- 20:01I literally, I just finished a review for the Honda Prelude and
- 20:06I, you know, it went up on YouTube and listen, YouTube is
- 20:09the roughest place to be an automotive journalist.
- 20:13Especially if you're a woman. I think it's really
- 20:15particularly, it's been was particularly hard when I first
- 20:17started. It was like, what's wrong with
- 20:19your hair or what, How come you're wearing mom jeans or
- 20:23what, you know, whatever it was that that people would say, it
- 20:25would never be about my work. It was for the car.
- 20:28I would love it if someone was like, Hey, could you talk more
- 20:30about the transmission? Like I would love to know more
- 20:33about that. It was always a it's generally a
- 20:35personal comment, at least in the very beginning.
- 20:37And there was this guy who wrote this really nice song thing.
- 20:39He's like, I've never watched one of your videos before.
- 20:41He's like, I'm kind of a card nut and I watch all these
- 20:44videos. He's like, and honestly, he's
- 20:46like you're reviewing the prelude was to me the most
- 20:48thorough and the, you know, the most, the most well-rounded.
- 20:52And you explained this better than anybody else did.
- 20:54And this I really liked and just you awesome, keep it up.
- 20:57And I was like, oh, maybe I'm not a complete fraud because I
- 21:02don't know about you guys, but I still feel like I have imposter
- 21:06syndrome. Oh yeah, like there's definitely
- 21:09moments. And I think you make a good
- 21:11point. Like with that experience with
- 21:13the screen writing boss, I think it's a skill that you have to
- 21:18learn to see those moments for what they truly are, which you
- 21:23did. But you know, the clarity
- 21:25doesn't. It's not always instantaneous,
- 21:28but it also makes you appreciate when you get to where you are
- 21:31now. You're like, oh, if I hadn't
- 21:33been through the path that I was on, I don't know that I would
- 21:37have seen this for what it is, recognized it, appreciated it as
- 21:40much. You know, it's those are.
- 21:45Yeah, they are. And it.
- 21:46But it's like, I think that's what I try to do too, is like,
- 21:50OK, what what is this trying to teach me?
- 21:52Like, because life is not meant to be, you know, all easy and it
- 21:57makes you appreciate the great stuff.
- 21:58And when you do achieve. Yeah.
- 22:01Then I would ask those people to direct me to their work and talk
- 22:07right. But I think.
- 22:09There's a lot of envy there, right?
- 22:10People look at you and they think you've got it all figured
- 22:12out. It must be this glamorous life.
- 22:15So what's what's the biggest misconception that people have
- 22:18about what you do? And I think just the ease of the
- 22:22job, I mean, I think, I think from the outside, it is one of
- 22:25those jobs. It's like a, it is a dream job.
- 22:27I mean, let's face it, it's like I get to, I get to drive
- 22:33hopefully, you know, 7580% of the cars that are out there.
- 22:38And I frankly like it doesn't matter if it's a McLaren or if
- 22:41it's a Nissan, I, I can find something good in any car or
- 22:44like there are things I love about it.
- 22:46And I just love, you know, I love how it's a pretty level
- 22:50playing field these days with a lot of stuff.
- 22:52And so really finding faults and flaws is a is a is kind of a
- 22:56difficult thing, but but it is it.
- 22:59It's not easy. It's not as easy as just oh, you
- 23:02push a button and like, like, I don't have anyone writing my
- 23:05stuff. No one hands me a script and
- 23:07goes, here are the words you have to say.
- 23:09Now you just go look pretty, as pretty as you can at your age.
- 23:13Go look pretty and go just like stand up and be like I'm not Van
- 23:17of White. Van of no nothing on Vanna
- 23:19White. She's amazing, just.
- 23:21Different jobs. I always wanted to be the person
- 23:24who was known. These are these are my words.
- 23:27This is what I genuinely think about this.
- 23:29And I take that, I take that very seriously.
- 23:33And I, I would hope and encourage all women to do that
- 23:36because that's how you become legitimate in this business.
- 23:39And but I do think like in the travel, listen, some of the
- 23:42travel is extraordinary. Like some of the travel is
- 23:45extraordinary. I've been to places that I could
- 23:47never be able to afford on my own, stay at hotels I could
- 23:51never afford to stay at. I have a tremendous amount of
- 23:54gratitude for it still, even 10 years in.
- 23:57I do not take it for granted. But I got to tell you, it is
- 24:00really difficult to get on a plane fly, you know, 9-10 hours,
- 24:05you land in a completely different time zone and you have
- 24:08to, you better get a good night's sleep that night.
- 24:10You have to go to kind of a long dinner because especially some
- 24:15European manufacturers love to take really long dinners and
- 24:18they don't start until like 10:00 at night.
- 24:20So you're like right here we go. And then you have to get up the
- 24:24next morning and you have to be on like you have to be like
- 24:27ready to go. And now it's not for me, it's
- 24:30not just, oh, I get in the car and I can drop little notes and
- 24:33I can evaluate. I have to be on camera.
- 24:36So I've got to be camera ready. I travel with a lot of equip,
- 24:39like a lot of camera equipment. And I'm usually, I'm usually
- 24:43driving with a, with a partner with someone else who doesn't
- 24:46give a shit about what I'm doing.
- 24:48Like they have their own stuff to do.
- 24:50And I'm like, is it OK if I stop?
- 24:53I have to like change the cameras.
- 24:54Like I feel really guilty about like trying to, you know, trying
- 24:57to sort of like encroach on their time and their space too,
- 25:00because I just, I don't want to be disrespectful.
- 25:03And then like in the moment while you're driving a car,
- 25:06especially if it's a performance car, that to me is even is even
- 25:08a tougher ask is like, I'm supposed to be evaluating and
- 25:12talking about it kind of at the same time and trying to have a
- 25:17coherent thought come out of my head that's succinct, but not
- 25:22stupid. And and like, like drive
- 25:27sometimes on a crack sometimes and and sometimes you're in a
- 25:30really fucking expensive car and you're like, oh, I don't want to
- 25:34ruin it. So.
- 25:35That could take all of your focus by itself, and then you're
- 25:38also in the moment having to produce camera ready content.
- 25:42And then by the way, you don't get my family was so cute
- 25:45because I'd go on trips. I'd be like at the beginning I'd
- 25:47be like, oh, I'm going to yeah, I'm going down to like to nice.
- 25:51And my uncle would be like, oh, there's a fabulous little tree
- 25:57that's just if you go down like this street and then like turn
- 26:00around, he's like, they have just like the most die for of
- 26:03course all. And I'm like, I don't have time
- 26:06for a shower. You're not on vacation, right?
- 26:09And people, I don't think, get that.
- 26:10Yeah. Well, because you go, you get
- 26:12there. Like you get there.
- 26:13That next day you have a dinner, you go and you drive the day
- 26:18after. And then the next day you're on
- 26:19a plane and you're coming home. And on that plane coming home,
- 26:23you're generally writing your story or you're filling out the
- 26:26rest of your impressions. And the second I get home, then
- 26:29I have to record my voiceover and then the the stuff gets
- 26:33edited because you're embargo, you're basically is like when
- 26:37you're allowed to say like, Hey, this is what I think of this car
- 26:39when your review goes up. Generally you do not have more
- 26:43than like four or five days from when you're done driving to when
- 26:48everything has to be written, you know, edited all of these
- 26:52things. And it's, it's very tiring.
- 26:56Again, I'm not complaining. I love it.
- 26:59I am super grateful about it. And but it's it's not as easy as
- 27:05it seems. I think it's one of people don't
- 27:07think a lot of people don't see what goes into it on the back
- 27:11end. And sort of the like you said,
- 27:14it's like without complaining about it, you know, traveling to
- 27:18other parts of the world for the brief periods of time that the
- 27:21trips usually are like that is draining.
- 27:24I think at one time they used to have like longer trips and I'm
- 27:27like, well, that sounds and a lot of that was before video
- 27:32too. So I think with I think when you
- 27:34add the video production into it, there's just this whole
- 27:37other element that's like, well, no, now I have to shoot B roll.
- 27:40So I I can't go to lunch because I need the car for the 45
- 27:44minutes that I would be sitting at lunch and I'm going to go
- 27:46shoot B roll and I'm going to go shoot my stand ups.
- 27:48So I oftentimes like, I won't, I won't make like like lunch.
- 27:54Right. Oh yeah.
- 27:56I think that's, I think that's part of your appeal.
- 27:58Like it's genuine. You like forgo the catch phrases
- 28:02and like the cheesy YouTube stuff and you seem like a real
- 28:05human, right? It, it, it shows.
- 28:07And and that's something that I think most people forget about.
- 28:11And, and I guess related, you know, Matt Farah had a good
- 28:14answer when someone asked him this question.
- 28:15You go on these trips and all this, just curious to get your
- 28:18take. How do you balance being
- 28:21critical while maintaining access right in an industry
- 28:24where relationships do matter so much?
- 28:26I mean, listen, you, you have to be honest because that's, that's
- 28:31your credibility on the line. I think that's 100% just a
- 28:36given. There are two things I would
- 28:39say. The first thing is if there's
- 28:42something wrong with the car, the press people normally, they
- 28:46kind of, they know it. They already know it.
- 28:49It's not going to come as a surprise to them.
- 28:52They're sort of like, yeah, I get it.
- 28:55There's a way of being diplomatic about it and of being
- 28:59not there's. I think there are those
- 29:01journalists that that are like they love a they love the gotcha
- 29:05moment. It's like, I'm going to like,
- 29:07I'm going to out you and like make some kind of like big
- 29:10statement about it. Like I'm so great.
- 29:12Oh, you fucked up. And like, this is what I found
- 29:16it. Yeah, Do that kind of
- 29:17journalism. This is not like I have a scoop.
- 29:19Oh, right. You know, look, I, I saw this
- 29:22person. To me, it's like, look, this I
- 29:26feel like this could have been done a little bit better.
- 29:28Like this to me doesn't feel like it says this doesn't feel
- 29:32like it is his premium because it should be for this level of
- 29:36car. Like it's you say these like
- 29:38there are ways to say it. Yeah, where it's where it is it
- 29:42there's diplomacy involved. Yes, that's.
- 29:44Yeah, that makes sense. Where you're you're conveying it
- 29:47honestly without just being critical for the sake of being
- 29:51critical. And you're not saying this?
- 29:52Fucking. Sucks like like who made that
- 29:55fuck of shit, right? No, like there are some people
- 29:58who do that, but that's not my style and and.
- 30:04It's kind of amazing that when you see behind the curtain a
- 30:07little bit of OEMs, it's kind of amazing that they do do what
- 30:10they do, right? Like they can manage to put
- 30:13together these amazing cars, right.
- 30:14When you look at the bean counters and the engineers and
- 30:17all the, it's right. Especially with the bigger
- 30:20companies. And then you throw in.
- 30:22You throw in regulations that they have there you.
- 30:26Go with. You know, people will talk about
- 30:28design and I'm, you know, I'm one of those people who who
- 30:30talks about it too. People are like all cars look
- 30:32the same now. And, you know, listen, I have
- 30:35always said, I feel like if I took the badging off of every
- 30:39white, like mid sized SUV, how many people would be able to
- 30:44tell like what was what? I think it would be a real
- 30:48challenge on many levels. But you also have to appreciate
- 30:51that automakers are they they have a lot of restrictions
- 30:55within which they need to work. And no, like, are we going to
- 30:59see the big finned, you know, Cadillacs of, you know, of the
- 31:0350s again, or even see like this, like these tiny little
- 31:07bumpers like that are on my Porsche.
- 31:10No, we're not going to see that ever again because people want
- 31:13to be safe and not die in their car.
- 31:16And I feel like that's kind of a payoff.
- 31:18I, you know, I do hope that there's that there's some, you
- 31:22know, more latitude and inventiveness when it comes to
- 31:26car design, especially as we get into more into the electrified
- 31:31era, because your components are all basically going to be the
- 31:34same. You're basically riding on a
- 31:36skateboard. And, and maybe that means that
- 31:38that there will be more creativity allowed on the
- 31:41exterior or maybe even someone will be able to say, Hey, I'm
- 31:44going to start this coach works where you can kind of you can
- 31:47have whatever it is that you want and smoke, Evie smoke
- 31:51whatever you want. And wouldn't that be a cool
- 31:53thing? So I think they do work within
- 31:56quite strict regulations. And yeah, I mean, boy, for
- 32:00anyone who doesn't understand why Subaru and Toyota got
- 32:03together on some of their, you know, cars or why why some
- 32:07manufacturers kind of get in bed with others, it's like this is
- 32:11an expensive proposition. And, you know, especially now
- 32:16like boy 2 for some of them to have gone all in in the EV
- 32:21space. And now like we're kind of
- 32:23seeing this backlash a little bit the pendulum, the sort of
- 32:26swinging a little bit the other way.
- 32:29It's a big, you take a big risk every single time you're making
- 32:32a wholesale decision like that. And it's, it's tough, I don't
- 32:38know that some of the, some of the car makers that we see now
- 32:40are going to be in business 510 years from now or fewer or less
- 32:43than that. So you know, I I try and respect
- 32:47that too do. You want to name names.
- 32:50No, OK. I have to ask, it's like I
- 32:53would, I would prefer not to, but you make a good point about
- 32:56how much the regulations impact design and how much it does.
- 33:01Like everyone is working within the same limitations.
- 33:04And I think that's something that when you just see a car on
- 33:06the road, that's easy to forget about that, but it really does,
- 33:13you know, impact. And some people have done a
- 33:16better job than others as far as I'm concerned.
- 33:19Like I look at what and, and I look at what Hyundai and Kia are
- 33:23doing. And I think that their approach
- 33:25to to design has been actually really interesting.
- 33:29I think if I look at Audis, I look at it's just sort of the
- 33:32Russian doll approach, right? It's like, it's like just get a
- 33:35bigger, bigger, bigger, bigger, bigger version of this kind of
- 33:38same thing. But yeah, that's a great
- 33:40description. With Hyundai, they kind of are.
- 33:43They're sort of more of like a like chess pieces, right?
- 33:48Where they compliment. Yeah, they kind of sort of look
- 33:51like they're of the same family. But like the Santa Fe now is a
- 33:55sort of like much this boxy kind of thing that doesn't look like
- 33:59the, you know, the what's the the Tucson, you know, it's just
- 34:06like. Oh yeah.
- 34:07Don't like how the Tucson looks. You're not like relegated to be
- 34:11like, well, God, I guess I have to get another car or like you
- 34:15don't, it's not, it's not like, oh, it's just a bigger version
- 34:17of the Tucson like. And so they, they have
- 34:20definitely taken into account different people have different
- 34:24tastes and different, different likes and, and different needs.
- 34:29And so I, I think that's actually been really wise of
- 34:31them. Well, and it's it's you make a
- 34:35good point because you can have sort of a common thread while
- 34:38still giving people options and keeping it a little more
- 34:41diverse. And I think we all commented at
- 34:43the auto show just this past fall, like Kia really is killing
- 34:47it. And I think people were
- 34:49pleasantly surprised. Yeah.
- 34:52I will say though that that new the Telluride really looks like
- 34:58a like a new Range Rover. Yes, heavily.
- 35:05They've learned homage. They've paid homage.
- 35:08Right, right, right. I mean, I tip my hat because
- 35:12it's, you know. Yeah, same.
- 35:15I've had the same thought. I know.
- 35:17What's the term for 100% homage? Heavily sampled helper.
- 35:23Yeah, I'd be a better Range Rover than the Range Rover, to
- 35:26be honest, right. Right.
- 35:28I mean, that Range Rover is gorgeous.
- 35:30I wouldn't. I wouldn't say no to one of
- 35:32them. No, no, I want a defender.
- 35:33That's what I. Want neither would I Oh.
- 35:35That's good, yeah. Yeah, Ryan knows what's up.
- 35:38I know. Well, I told, I told Ryan and
- 35:40Dan last week, I was at a Cars and Coffee with my daughter.
- 35:43We were walking around and there were there was a wide variety of
- 35:45cars and not really any big cars, though.
- 35:49And she said, Mom, if you were going to get a big car, what
- 35:51would you get? And I was laughing and I
- 35:54immediately said a defender. She said, I knew it.
- 35:56I knew that before you even answered.
- 35:59So Lindsay, I have a question like talk to me about your
- 36:03daughter's like interest in cars and did that, is that kind of an
- 36:07organic thing or did that do you think that came from your from
- 36:11from your love and it's just sort of has trickled down to
- 36:13her? I think it's probably a
- 36:16combination, but I think it's more nature than nurture
- 36:20actually. Obviously because like really
- 36:25the people that she's around in our family the most are into
- 36:28cars. So she was definitely exposed to
- 36:31it and had the opportunity to, you know, experience a wide
- 36:36variety of what I would consider fun cars and sort of see cars as
- 36:40something that's a hobby as well as transportation and, you know,
- 36:45a way to sort of meet up with your friends or meet new people.
- 36:48And so she got to experience all of that from a very like from I
- 36:52mean, she was at the track at 10 weeks old.
- 36:56Like I think the first event that I was back out, she was 10
- 36:59weeks old, which I look back on that as maybe not the smartest,
- 37:01but you're here nor there at this point.
- 37:04And some of the cars that you have exposed her to be just
- 37:07because of your family connection with Cobras and like
- 37:11those that that classic car element that to me is so I think
- 37:16that's so formative because they are so different than what we
- 37:20see now. And they are like little, these
- 37:22kind of little toys. And I think especially I think
- 37:25that's what made me really fall in love, was that that the
- 37:29Porsche Speedster was just like, it's cute.
- 37:32Yes. Like I can see myself in that.
- 37:34Like it's just like a little like a little Princess car.
- 37:38It's got crossover appeal for sure.
- 37:40It really was. And I just thought, oh, what a
- 37:42what a great point of entry. And I could see a cobra like
- 37:45having the same kind of allure for a young girl.
- 37:48Yeah, that. And what's funny is she has
- 37:50really connected to because there's a 73 Bronco in the
- 37:53family and she had really connected to that one.
- 37:56So you know, like she, there have been times where we have
- 37:59gone for a drive because she has walked outside and and kind of
- 38:02patted the back of it and said we should probably take this
- 38:05Bronco out. And I'm like, you know what, far
- 38:07be it for me to say no to that? That's.
- 38:10Right. But I remember one time when she
- 38:12was like 2 and she was in the back of the Boss 3O2 Mustang
- 38:16that I had because I had a 2012, and she was in the back yelling
- 38:20go, Lightning McQueen go. And I remember thinking to
- 38:23myself, like, nobody will ever believe me that I didn't teach
- 38:26her to do that. But that was all her.
- 38:29So she, you know, I think she would have been a car girl
- 38:32anyway, but it might not have been as easy to experience it.
- 38:36And she'd not been born into the family that she was.
- 38:39But yeah, I'm very, very lucky that she still wants to hang out
- 38:42with me. And we'll go to car stuff.
- 38:44That's a big deal at 13. Yeah, it is not lost on me for
- 38:49sure. So.
- 38:53I wish I had someone to talk to about my love of cars because I,
- 38:57it was just one of those things where I would look at like I, as
- 38:59I got older and I was driving, you know, on the freeway in Los
- 39:03Angeles and I would, I would look at cars and I'd be like, on
- 39:06really like the, the back end of that one is kind of like, what
- 39:09the hell. But the front end of this is
- 39:11like, this is really cool. Or how unusual that that's the
- 39:14style or the design. And I remember so acutely like
- 39:17the Cadillac Deville that was like an on ramp.
- 39:19And I was like, I feel like you could drive right up that thing.
- 39:22And there was the launch. There were things that certainly
- 39:26impacted me in a way, but I never vocalized it because I
- 39:30never had like a community. Yeah.
- 39:34Talk with about it. And my parents were, you know,
- 39:38my my stepdad is not really into cars and my mom was just like, I
- 39:42don't know, I'm going to drive a Buick.
- 39:43You know, I've got a like sure, why not?
- 39:46And so when all of this stuff started to happen for me, my
- 39:49friends were like, wait, you're writing about what they're like,
- 39:52what the hell do you know about cars?
- 39:54And I'm like, well, actually, I know more than you might think
- 39:58because I, you know, but I just never had anyone to talk to
- 40:01about it. And the community is wonderful
- 40:06when it comes to just appreciating cars, but also
- 40:10working on cars. Like, suddenly you just have
- 40:13like a whole pack of like of, of friends who are like, OK, let's
- 40:18lean over the hood and figure out what the Hell's going on
- 40:20here. Yeah, and everybody's in and
- 40:24they're all willing to jump in and help and they all enjoy it.
- 40:27It's not a, you know, it's not a task.
- 40:30And I think, you know, like we, our friend Bassem Wassup that we
- 40:34all know his son is around my daughter's age.
- 40:36And you know, our friend John Dicey at Porsche Colorado
- 40:40Springs, his son is around. They're all around the same age
- 40:43and they're all car kids. But like you said, like they're
- 40:46kind of at least for right now, like they're the only car kids
- 40:50that they know. So when we can get them
- 40:51together, we do. But they're all in different
- 40:53states. And I think, like John and I've
- 40:57talked about this, even when we were growing up, we didn't
- 41:00really find our car people until we were, you know, adults.
- 41:05And that's in that way social media has been so amazing
- 41:09because it connects so many people that aren't in the same
- 41:12place. And, like, Bassam really summed
- 41:14it up well because I think the car community is so welcoming,
- 41:18and you can just walk up and introduce yourself to someone
- 41:21that you don't know. And you have this big thing in
- 41:24common. And he described it as, you
- 41:27know, knowing that you're meeting a fellow car enthusiast,
- 41:29it shortcuts all of the small talk.
- 41:32And you just sort of jump into this friendship because, you
- 41:34know, you have this giant thing in common.
- 41:36Yeah. And I mean, I remember
- 41:38something. To talk about.
- 41:40Yeah, like you just, you have this immediate connection.
- 41:44And I remember remarking about that the very first time my
- 41:46family went to Car Week. My siblings and I and my parents
- 41:50and one of my cousins were there.
- 41:52And one of my my cousin and I are pretty close in age.
- 41:55And at some point into the trip, we realized that my dad didn't
- 41:59know all these people he was talking to, but he had just been
- 42:02walking up and talking to people.
- 42:04And then he'd bring us over and whatever.
- 42:05And finally, we're like, wait a minute, you don't know any of
- 42:08these people. And he's like, yeah, but we're
- 42:09all car people. And that was a light bulb moment
- 42:12for me. And I think, you know, like you
- 42:15said, there's little threads when you look back.
- 42:16I think now I am not at all reticent.
- 42:20I'm very willing to walk up to anybody and introduce myself,
- 42:23which I think social media has also kind of greased the wheels
- 42:26because in a lot of ways, or a lot of times, you already know
- 42:29the people through online interaction, which wasn't
- 42:33present at the time. But yeah, I think it really
- 42:35gives you your tribe because. Yeah.
- 42:38I mean, I didn't know any other, certainly no other girls in high
- 42:42school that were into cars. So I was the same as you.
- 42:45Like I'd be in the car with friends and I'd see, you know, I
- 42:48remember when the Jaguar station wagon was out for a brief moment
- 42:51in time and commenting on it and the people in the backseat,
- 42:55they're like, so you're into cars.
- 42:58This is. And my friend goes, yeah, she
- 43:00really likes cars. And then the conversation
- 43:02carried on something else. But yeah, we were.
- 43:05We were all sort of, you know, our own little islands.
- 43:08Yeah, in a lot of ways, yeah. So talk a little bit about like,
- 43:16because you have seen a big evolution at Kelley Blue Book
- 43:20and I think just watching how social media has impacted the
- 43:23industry and, you know, obviously you're creating the
- 43:27videos, which is content. So talk a little bit like how
- 43:31you've seen social media impacted and how things have
- 43:34evolved while you've been at Kelley Blue Book.
- 43:38It's definitely like a fluid situation.
- 43:41I mean, I, it has changed a lot since I got there.
- 43:44And I feel like I kind of came in quite at the end of
- 43:47something, the end of the, the end of one piece of it and kind
- 43:51of the beginning of another. And I'm very grateful that I
- 43:54that I was able to be a part of the kind of the end of, of that
- 43:58and experience like the the magazine, the magazine sort of
- 44:02era in a way. And I'm almost nostalgic for
- 44:05something that I never really truly knew.
- 44:09But I'm grateful that I had a little taste of it.
- 44:13Yeah. I mean, it's been, it's been
- 44:15really interesting and quite difficult.
- 44:19I would imagine. I would kind of equate it with
- 44:21with meet the music industry. When music video first came
- 44:27around and I was watching something, I can't remember what
- 44:31documentary it was. Don't ask me.
- 44:32I feel like my parents now where I'm like remember it was about a
- 44:35guy in a place with a thing and but it was about it was it was
- 44:39interviewing A musician and and he was, oh, it was.
- 44:42Eagles The. Eagles.
- 44:44I just watched it. I'm like, wait, I know this
- 44:46story. And it was Don Henley and he was
- 44:48like, suddenly I have to fucking act and I have to like be in
- 44:52front of a camera. He's like, I just want to, I
- 44:54just want to play music, man. I didn't get into this.
- 44:57And I and I, that really resonated with me because
- 45:00because we are going through a like, I wouldn't even call it an
- 45:04evolution. It is a revolution at Kelley
- 45:06Blue Book, for better or for worse.
- 45:09And a lot of it really is focused on like the visual
- 45:12aspect of it, video creation, social media, the attention
- 45:19spans of people have gotten so incredibly short.
- 45:22And everything that we do now lives on this terrible and
- 45:26wonderful device and that we are trying to meet people where they
- 45:33are. And, and that's great, but it,
- 45:36it does, gosh, it does kind of eliminate some people who are
- 45:41not. So not everyone is supposed to
- 45:43be on camera. Let's face it, like it isn't, it
- 45:46is awkward at best. And it is downright like awful
- 45:52at worse because it's just it's you put puts you on the spot.
- 45:56It is, it is a really, it is a really challenging and difficult
- 45:59thing to do. And like, you know, photography
- 46:05like, OK, during the pandemic, my boss was like, well, he's
- 46:10like, we can't use our production company anymore.
- 46:12So here's camera go out and learn how to shoot a car.
- 46:14And I was like. That's me.
- 46:18Like what? What are you talking about?
- 46:20And I at least again, thankfully my experience in in the world of
- 46:25moving pictures at various stages and places and and
- 46:29iterations, I was able to pick it up pretty quickly.
- 46:32But there are some people who just, that's just not what they
- 46:36were built to do. It doesn't mean they're not a
- 46:38wonderful car ride, but they're fabulous fucking car riders who
- 46:42have this, just this like this vast knowledge and this like
- 46:45encyclopedic, like intellect that I will, they will forget
- 46:51more in like 30 seconds than I will ever know about cars.
- 46:57And they are at this terrible disadvantage now because you
- 47:00know what I don't? I don't know how to, I can't
- 47:03like drive and talk to a camera and like come up with my
- 47:06thoughts at the same time. And I just, I freeze up because
- 47:09I'm, and it, that part to me is, is a real shame because I think,
- 47:15I think we are kind of, there's this attrition and, and this
- 47:18contraction of the, of our business.
- 47:21You're seeing a lot of outlets that are disappearing.
- 47:25A lot of the online outlets are being scooped up by venture
- 47:29capitalists and they don't they don't make money.
- 47:32You know, it's like they're like, well, wait a second.
- 47:34Like we thought this was going to be like some lucrative like
- 47:36money making thing. And I'm like, I don't know who
- 47:40did your research, but you need different analysts like because
- 47:44just. Hate to break it to you, yeah.
- 47:46And, and so I think, and it's a, so it is a very challenging time
- 47:50right now in our industry. And, and I think everybody who
- 47:54has a job is intensely grateful for that job.
- 47:57I do know that other people at other outlets like they are,
- 48:00they try every single time they can to hire freelance people
- 48:04because they know how much people are struggling.
- 48:07And there are a lot of people who when I first started, they
- 48:11are, they've had to go find other things to do because it's
- 48:15not sustainable. And so, you know, it's a, it's
- 48:18a, it's a very, it's a very interesting time right now.
- 48:22And I am very grateful that I have a job.
- 48:27It's hasn't been easy the last couple of months because we have
- 48:30been making this, this very dramatic shift.
- 48:33But we've all kind of banded together to try and figure out
- 48:36like, all right, how do we do this?
- 48:37Like if this is the new, if this is the new normal, then then how
- 48:42do we do this? The one thing I will say is
- 48:45everyone that I work with certainly is like very hard
- 48:48working. They are unbelievably dedicated
- 48:51to what they do. They love what they do.
- 48:54They know how fortunate they are.
- 48:56And that makes it easier to, to kind of weather the bumps and
- 49:01the, and the, the big waves. But yeah, it's been a, it's been
- 49:06a certainly it's been an interesting time.
- 49:08I think that about the whole automotive industry in general.
- 49:11I'm very fortunate that I get to do tours at the LA Auto Show
- 49:15just for regular normal people. I wanted to, yeah, I wanted to
- 49:19ask you about that and kind of like give us the behind the
- 49:23scenes on the behind the. Scenes I.
- 49:25Do I do I have this year was amazing or last year I should
- 49:29say. This year is so amazing because
- 49:31there was so much, there was kind of a lot of great stuff at
- 49:34the LA Auto Show. Like for the first, like during
- 49:37the pandemic, I mean, we skipped a year and then we kind of sort
- 49:41of slowly sort of crawling back like kind of out of the sludge.
- 49:45And this last year was the first year that I've really felt the
- 49:49energy back at the LA show, which made me really happy
- 49:52because I remember going when I was in my teens, my dad would
- 49:56take us and I'd, you know, I'd be like, oh, oh, show.
- 50:00And then I'd see the NSX. Like in 1989, I remember seeing
- 50:03the new NSX and I was like, what is that?
- 50:08Because that is like a spaceship.
- 50:10It's so cool. You can drive that.
- 50:11Oh my God. And so there were a lot of
- 50:14really, there were two concept cars there.
- 50:17You guys like concept cars added LA shows, Brad.
- 50:22And so I kind of had this like this, this like this like tour
- 50:27that I did when I was talking about like the end cars for the
- 50:30Elantra. And then that that would be like
- 50:32sort of the performance, the performance division thread that
- 50:35went through everything from Nissan to Toyota to Honda to
- 50:40like, you know, what Polestar was and now has become and all,
- 50:45just all of these really interesting things and
- 50:49iterations. And we have new car companies.
- 50:51And to me, you know, the the overarching theme is if you
- 50:56aren't all an automotive enthusiast and all look, you
- 51:00don't need to know how to turn a wrench in order to be an
- 51:02automotive enthusiast. All you need to do is like cars.
- 51:06And if you do this is like this to me is as close to what it
- 51:13must have been like at the beginning of all car.
- 51:18Everything from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
- 51:22You had guys that were like, well, we make a bicycle.
- 51:24Like, let's put a motor in it. Like, let's try and like, let's
- 51:28do that. Oh, we make carriages.
- 51:30OK, let's do that. Stanley Steamer.
- 51:32OK, yeah, let's make cars like everybody was just like, sure.
- 51:37And now we have companies like Lucid and, you know, like Rivian
- 51:43and like, I'll throw Tesla in there too.
- 51:46Why not? Who's who cares?
- 51:48They did kick things off a little bit.
- 51:51Still the best selling EV on the planet.
- 51:53I don't care if anyone wants to think or not.
- 51:56Like the people are still buying it, so sorry.
- 51:59The numbers are there. As you know, I, I, I can't mine
- 52:03is not the question why, but here we are.
- 52:05So, so yeah. So this is like this to me is
- 52:09like a, a, a renaissance in the automotive industry because you
- 52:13have so many different powertrain options, you have so
- 52:16much innovation and invention happening and it's fantastic.
- 52:22I love. Being an observer.
- 52:23It's global and I love being an observer of all of it.
- 52:28And a commentator I guess. On some levels.
- 52:32Well, so how did you get into doing the tours?
- 52:34Like, I don't, I mean, I think there's a lot of people who
- 52:36don't even know. Stumbled, I mean, I stumbled
- 52:38into it. It's one of those things where
- 52:40it was like, hey, like, is this something that you would be into
- 52:44doing? And I thought, Oh yeah, sure,
- 52:46why not? And it started many years ago, I
- 52:48think maybe 2019. And just this year we were like,
- 52:53oh, how do we drum up like, like excitement about it?
- 52:57And this was really the first year that we decided, well,
- 52:59let's do almost like, I hate the word influencer.
- 53:02I don't have enough followers to be an influencer.
- 53:05If that is the thing, that's fine.
- 53:07The micro, micro influence. There we go.
- 53:11And so they said, well, why don't you guys help U.S. market
- 53:15these things And we'll just say, hey, I'm going to be giving
- 53:18tours at the LA Auto Show. You guys want to walk around and
- 53:21like get my point of view on all the stuff.
- 53:25Please join me. And it was so successful.
- 53:29I think I went from, I think two years ago or maybe like just for
- 53:332024. I did, I think I did like 3
- 53:36tours for 2025. I did 9 or like 9 or 10 tours.
- 53:46And it was all based on like you got to pick who you were with.
- 53:50And it was like, oh, I work for Kelly.
- 53:52She works for Kelley Blue Book. Oh, yeah.
- 53:53I've seen her videos. Yeah.
- 53:55Oh my gosh, yeah, that's fun. It was really fun.
- 53:59And people kind of know what they're getting instead of like,
- 54:02who is this person gonna be? And Lynn, you could tell them
- 54:05anything and they're gonna believe you, right?
- 54:07So did you ever have any fun with that?
- 54:08And. I lied.
- 54:09All the OK, good, good, good. I would be disappointed if you
- 54:12hadn't. She's like, it was the Magical
- 54:14mystery tour with Lynn. But there was.
- 54:17Some kind horsepower, yeah. That was one of the big
- 54:20questions that I would ask, am I how much horsepower you think
- 54:22this one has? And then we would have really
- 54:24cool discussions like how much horsepower is too much on some
- 54:27of these EV, Like is 1200 horsepower in the new in that
- 54:32Corvette, you know, concept? Is that too much?
- 54:35Yeah, to me, I think that's way too much.
- 54:37And then there was another another area in the Ford booth.
- 54:40It was really cool because they had a, they had like the, the
- 54:47one of their sort of performance Mustangs right here.
- 54:50And then they had the, the range of the F-150 Raptor that was
- 54:55right here that had just done, I think Sonora.
- 54:58And then right next to it they had the Maverick.
- 55:01And I'm like, look at this, look at these three vehicles
- 55:04back-to-back to back. These could not be more
- 55:06different. And yet here we are.
- 55:08We're looking at this this amazing like scope of what is
- 55:12out there and what's available. And you know, it was just, it
- 55:16was, it was great. And you know, Porsche, Porsche
- 55:20didn't come, but they really supported, they supported an LA
- 55:23dealership and they had quite a big presence there.
- 55:28And the Carrera GT was there. And that's always such a great
- 55:31story, which is like, look back in back when they were making
- 55:35these, they couldn't sell them. So they stopped making them.
- 55:38No one, they couldn't, they couldn't pay people to buy these
- 55:41things. And now they're like million
- 55:44over $1,000,000 car. So it's just there's story after
- 55:47story if you just kind of dig a little deep.
- 55:49And that was that always, to me is really fun for the people who
- 55:53are really engaged and they're just like, that's really cool.
- 55:56I've learned something. Lynn that you know, the, the,
- 55:58the CGT and the 300SL Mercedes-Benz, right, have so
- 56:02many parallels. We hear the stories about at the
- 56:04end of the 300 SLS run, they just made them all in white with
- 56:07red interior or whatever. We had Nate, Nate on from the
- 56:09the classic center. I think you told us this.
- 56:11Oh what a great what a great podcast that would be to watch.
- 56:15That place is amazing. He's the neatest guy.
- 56:19Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:19I want to talk about a dream job, right?
- 56:21You know you're into that sort of.
- 56:23Thing, I mean, if you're into it, yes, please.
- 56:26I went to the opening of that new place and I was just like
- 56:29dazzled. I mean, it was just magnificent.
- 56:34I know I could spend multiple days there.
- 56:36It's so cool. My dream at some point is to
- 56:39find a classic Rd. rally and to snag a car from them and be
- 56:42like, all right, let's go everybody so.
- 56:46Well, Lynn, I happen to know someone.
- 56:48Yeah, well, no, I mean my and and their their their local PR
- 56:52guy. He's always like, yeah, just let
- 56:54me know what you want. We'll go like car shopping
- 56:56basically. It's like it's fine.
- 56:58Well, if if you ever want to do the Colorado Grand, let me know.
- 57:01That's something I'm involved in and that's how actually how I
- 57:03got to know Nate and Mike and all those.
- 57:05I say yes to. I say yes to everything.
- 57:08OK, let's do that. Have you ever done anything like
- 57:11that? I'm sure you have.
- 57:13Yeah. That car show is brought to you
- 57:14by Sheffield Watches. Sheffield is the storied
- 57:17watchmaking brand that was revived a couple of years back
- 57:20by our good friend Jay Turkbus, and it's seen wild success in
- 57:23both the car and watch enthusiast communities.
- 57:25Sheffield offers a wide selection of watches, many
- 57:28inspired by the iconic designs of its 1960s dive models, most
- 57:32notably the one that Jay's parents gave him in 1970, which
- 57:35ignited his lifelong passion for watches.
- 57:37Sheffield watches are high quality, reasonably priced in a
- 57:40great value. Sheffield has truly become the
- 57:43car guy and car girls watch of choice.
- 57:46Order your Sheffield watch at sheffieldwatches.com give them a
- 57:51follow on the gram at Sheffield Under Score All Sport Under
- 57:54Score watches and tell them that car show sent you.
- 57:59My sometimes people will say, well what's the best press strip
- 58:02you've ever been on? And it's such an easy one for me
- 58:05in in 202420242023. Where's the thing?
- 58:13No so many years ago. No, right, 2023 I'm looking at
- 58:17the the lanyard right now. I don't keep lanyards, but I
- 58:19keep that lanyard. I was invited as a guest of
- 58:23Jaguar Classic and their their classic division.
- 58:26They do continuation cars and they had two people that they
- 58:30want. They were trying out a program
- 58:32that they were planning that they were thinking about doing
- 58:34for customers and they're like, well, let's invite 2
- 58:37journalists. I was one of them.
- 58:39Bassem Wassup was another one of them.
- 58:42And they put they had they had a continuation C type and a
- 58:48continuation D type. Oh, wow.
- 58:50These are extraordinary cars. For anyone who doesn't know
- 58:52about them, I highly recommend you go and do some research and
- 58:55look into them. They're not only beautiful works
- 58:58of art, but they were formidable Lamont Racing cars back in their
- 59:03day in the 5th in the 50s. And there was, there's an event
- 59:07called the Modena Cinto Oray and it's four days and it's
- 59:11basically a classic Rd. rally that has a track element to it
- 59:16on every single day. And we flew into Rome and we had
- 59:20a whole team behind us of Jaguar Classic, both engineers and
- 59:27press people. They had a photographer with us.
- 59:30And they, we basically we, they're like, we would like you
- 59:33to compete your teammate. And I've done rally before.
- 59:36So for me, reading Rd. books was something that I knew, I knew
- 59:40how to do the TSD, the time, speed, distance, challenges.
- 59:43And so that was why I got invited to go and do it.
- 59:46And they're like, OK, well, you kind of have the best of both
- 59:49worlds. And so I, we were both paired up
- 59:52with Jaguar classic employees and we, I taught my guy how to
- 59:58rally because he just was like, I don't know what this is.
- 1:00:01What a time card. I don't know.
- 1:00:02Huh. And so I, it was, and, and it
- 1:00:06was literally like 5 days driving around Tuscany.
- 1:00:11I mean in the most beautiful car I could ever possibly imagine.
- 1:00:16It was heaven. And then at night this, you
- 1:00:19know, they would do these magnificent like events like,
- 1:00:24oh, this is our black tie evening and everyone would show
- 1:00:26up like black tie, like a black and white ball.
- 1:00:28And I'm like. What thing?
- 1:00:30Right now, Alexis. Yeah, and there's like, Lord,
- 1:00:33Lord, you know so and so who's doing?
- 1:00:36It's all gentlemen drivers, right?
- 1:00:37It was just like, like a world that I will never, ever
- 1:00:41participate in in any other way. But it was one of them.
- 1:00:44You got to pop in for a moment. I got to dip my toe in it.
- 1:00:47It was very glamorous and it was very lovely.
- 1:00:49But the car was, boy, you really need to know how to drive that
- 1:00:54car because the laws of physics apply 1000% to that car.
- 1:00:59But what a treat that was. Sounds amazing.
- 1:01:02So I have done some Rd. rally. Yeah, okay.
- 1:01:04Cool, cool. Well, you know, we're driving
- 1:01:06not just on the, I mean, you were driving them on the track.
- 1:01:09Too, but for right, so for for there were two, there were two
- 1:01:14classes 1 that was competition and you had to have a roll cage
- 1:01:18because you're that's but the regularity for regularity, you
- 1:01:21would just do an out lap, a scouting lap, and then the next
- 1:01:25lap you would do would be timed. And so you could take it at any
- 1:01:28time you wanted. It was not for speed, but the
- 1:01:31next subsequent 3 laps, you had to match that time at every
- 1:01:36sector as closely as possible. So it was about precision.
- 1:01:41It wasn't just about like, you know, flip, you know, whaling it
- 1:01:45around the thing as fast as you can.
- 1:01:47It was like, no, how can you duplicate this time to the, I
- 1:01:51mean, to the exact, I think it was like hundredths, hundredths
- 1:01:54of a second. And that was a real, I mean,
- 1:01:57these were real like actual driving, driving challenges.
- 1:02:01There's good other cars, good other cars on the track too who
- 1:02:04are trying to either take the the racing line or not.
- 1:02:07And you're like, oh shit, I'm not going fast or you're going
- 1:02:10faster than I am. And so it's really quite unique.
- 1:02:14That's fantastic. You know, God, Yeah.
- 1:02:16That's the life you you lead, Lynn.
- 1:02:18I mean, I mean, that's I. Am I'm very excited to say and
- 1:02:22I'm I'm hoping that it's not too premature to say this, but I'll,
- 1:02:25I'll scoop you here, please. You hear it here, but I am
- 1:02:30trying to get the 912 ready to participate in a new California
- 1:02:35rally called the Trinity. The Trinity rally, the same
- 1:02:40woman who has put together the Rebel, The Rebel rally, which is
- 1:02:43an off road map and compass navigation rally has put
- 1:02:46together a, a road rally that is called the Trinity rally.
- 1:02:52And it's, it's three days and it's starting at the Golden Gate
- 1:02:55Bridge and it's ending at Sonoma Raceway.
- 1:02:57And I believe it's going to be a similar format.
- 1:02:59So you will do on road Rd. book sometimes speed, distance
- 1:03:03challenges and then and then an on track component to it, which
- 1:03:07I'm not 100% sure what it is. The wonderful thing about this
- 1:03:10is it's not just, oh, classic cars from this, from this date
- 1:03:14to this date, you can bring any car because there is just sort
- 1:03:17of like a modern class, OK, a modern class.
- 1:03:21If you want to, you could bring a Miata and you could do it in a
- 1:03:24Miata. You could do it in a Forerunner
- 1:03:25if you wanted to. Like, so it's, it's meant to be
- 1:03:28more kind of egalitarian and I think a lot of sort of more
- 1:03:32expensive and less approachable. Like the California melee must
- 1:03:38be just beautiful. But it's a fortune to enter.
- 1:03:41And so so I'm really actually very excited.
- 1:03:44And it's not just all for women. I mean, we're kind of
- 1:03:47encouraging that women do this, but men can participate as well.
- 1:03:51And so, yeah, I'm scrambling to try and get the the 912 into a
- 1:03:54into a place where she's ready to go and, and to compete in the
- 1:03:58rally. And it's in May, so I'm really
- 1:04:00excited to be doing that. That's so exciting.
- 1:04:02We talked more. About the 912 because I was.
- 1:04:04Going to say I want to hear about my, I want to hear about
- 1:04:08Rebel. But yeah, tell us about the 912.
- 1:04:11I asked because I drove my first 912 recently driven 1,000,009
- 1:04:14Elevens. I'd never driven a 912.
- 1:04:16Yeah. And it was kind of a revelation.
- 1:04:18Yeah. Like it was really sublime.
- 1:04:20And I found myself driving in a different way.
- 1:04:22And I just, I kind of fell in love with the thing.
- 1:04:24So what's the story with yours? There's a lot to love.
- 1:04:27So again, because of my, my, my father's connection into
- 1:04:31Porsches and those sort of early cars, you know, listen, I'd love
- 1:04:36a I'd love a 356, but they're just unobtainium, right?
- 1:04:39I mean, that is this is so expensive.
- 1:04:42And so I've kind of for a long time, it had my eye on a, on
- 1:04:45the, the sort of the nine O 1 body style of 911, also
- 1:04:50unbelievably expensive, but there's a 912, which is the 4
- 1:04:55cylinder version. Everything else on it is the
- 1:04:57same. The only thing that was
- 1:04:59different other than the engine was on the 9/11, they put a 50
- 1:05:05LB weight in the front bumper in order to balance the weight of
- 1:05:09the, the, the increased weight of the engine.
- 1:05:11So if you, if you do, I don't. And I would be curious to do
- 1:05:15what power to weight ratio would be in both of those cars and how
- 1:05:18different it would be. But ask Jerry Seinfeld how like
- 1:05:23how much fun those are to to drive.
- 1:05:25The one thing I will say is this, which is really
- 1:05:26interesting. You know, I found this car on
- 1:05:29Craigslist, which is kind of a weird place to find cars these
- 1:05:32days, But I had I had gotten burned like probably a month
- 1:05:36before I got scammed on OfferUp about a car.
- 1:05:42I Scott, I listen, they know how to get you.
- 1:05:45They know exactly what to say. They know you want it like, oh,
- 1:05:48is this that fine? Where you're like, I was the
- 1:05:50lucky one who found the $8000 car that some guy didn't know
- 1:05:54what he had and I'm not I fell for it and I felt like a fool,
- 1:05:58but I learned a very valuable. I only lost $250, but I learned
- 1:06:02a very valuable lesson and then I actually sold the story to
- 1:06:06motor 1. So I ended up making money off
- 1:06:09of it. But I more importantly to me was
- 1:06:13to be able to say to people, hey, look out because this is
- 1:06:15happening. And here are some of the things
- 1:06:17to look for. And here's how to safeguard
- 1:06:19yourself because it's rampant and it's so gross to me.
- 1:06:23Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:24I mean the catfishing. Yeah, you got catfished by a
- 1:06:27car. Seriously fell for it.
- 1:06:30Line and sinker. We're all looking for love, you
- 1:06:32know we. Are we're all looking for that?
- 1:06:34We're all looking for that barn. Fine, That's like the deal of
- 1:06:37the century. And so I, I was, I was a little
- 1:06:41bit bruised, but I, I kept looking because I really wanted
- 1:06:45one. And, and so I did manage to find
- 1:06:50one. I didn't know if it was a runner
- 1:06:51or not. It had been sitting in the back
- 1:06:53lot of some dude's friend's house for a year and 1/2 he had
- 1:06:57bought it because he kind of wanted it as a prop for his like
- 1:07:01he, he started a classic, like a vintage car clothing company and
- 1:07:06he was starting, he was doing retail stores and he wanted it
- 1:07:09to put in the store. And he's like, look, I never got
- 1:07:12around to, to, to cleaning it up or doing anything.
- 1:07:15I never, I never started it. It's was sitting outside for
- 1:07:18five years before I bought it. And someone had started, said,
- 1:07:23started a restoration on it and then quit because it was a lot
- 1:07:26of work. And so I went and I looked at it
- 1:07:29and I was like, this is probably the perfect thing for me because
- 1:07:32it's already kind of well on its way.
- 1:07:34It had a new floor. They had.
- 1:07:36Yeah, but you could tell that it had rusted out in so many places
- 1:07:39that they had brought in other little Frankenstein's monster
- 1:07:43parts to. It wasn't all original.
- 1:07:46Didn't care. Don't give a shit.
- 1:07:48I don't care about that stuff. Not important to me.
- 1:07:50And so I recruited my friend Aaron Robinson, who was a car
- 1:07:53and driver for 17 years and now is at Haggerty.
- 1:07:57And I said, look, would you be interested in, would you be
- 1:08:00interested in doing this with me?
- 1:08:02And he was like, I don't know. Normally I do like really
- 1:08:07difficult Italian 12 cylinder jobbies.
- 1:08:10So I'm not sure. But he's like, yeah, sure, why
- 1:08:12not? This could be a fun little
- 1:08:13project. And he very graciously, I bought
- 1:08:18the car and he very graciously, you know, jammed it in his
- 1:08:21garage for a year and we worked on it almost every weekend for a
- 1:08:27year. And I used his tools and I used
- 1:08:31his time and I probably pissed off his wife more than she's
- 1:08:35like, it's my time now get out. You know, what the heck that by
- 1:08:40the end of it, I actually gave him half the car because he had
- 1:08:43earned it. He had 100% earned it.
- 1:08:46I was so grateful for his help and his words with it.
- 1:08:49And we got it to a point where it was like it was a driver, but
- 1:08:54I will say this, it was not a refined driver.
- 1:08:56And all of those things that I had heard about, oh man, these
- 1:08:59are so much fun to drive and it's so great.
- 1:09:01Our throttle pedal was heavy, heavy, heavy.
- 1:09:05And I was like, this is like after a while, but I can't drive
- 1:09:08this for long distance. And we drove.
- 1:09:10First Test drive was up to Pebble Beach two years ago.
- 1:09:14And it made it. Made it fine.
- 1:09:16It was great. But man, it was really, I mean,
- 1:09:19it was like, oh, it was the suspension didn't feel great.
- 1:09:23It was harsh and it was just hard to drive.
- 1:09:26And there, I didn't realize this, but there was a gap in the
- 1:09:29window front windshield seal that was like this big.
- 1:09:31And so any, anything over 3540 miles an hour and it was like,
- 1:09:38it's just like, I can't whistle. But imagine a really irritating
- 1:09:41whistle. It was 6 hours to Monterey,
- 1:09:44yeah. This I'm like, I'm not getting
- 1:09:47it, like I'm not getting it. This is not fun.
- 1:09:49And and then a year went by and I drove it.
- 1:09:52I, it was shipped out to, to, to Virginia.
- 1:09:56We did the melee melee warm up in it and we won our class.
- 1:10:00Aaron and I won our class in it. And we actually were, you know,
- 1:10:04we won entry into the actual melee in in Italy, But of course
- 1:10:08it's too expensive and I can't do that.
- 1:10:10So there you go. But just recently I was like,
- 1:10:14look, I feel like we need to just kind of like fine tune and
- 1:10:17refine some things. And I sent it to a place in
- 1:10:19Torrance called Johnsons Alignment, which they do amazing
- 1:10:23work on on vintage cars. And they were like, dude, you're
- 1:10:29metal on metal back here on some stuff like your bushings are
- 1:10:32just gone. I needed new lower control arms.
- 1:10:36They put in new tie rods. Like I got a new spring plate
- 1:10:40and they did some welding and they re just replaced all the
- 1:10:43rubber parts I've got. I've got I've got tie rods from
- 1:10:48now from a 930 turbo in there. Really.
- 1:10:50Well, I know. But man, I, I was, I was like,
- 1:10:55Oh my gosh, like the ride in this is so much better.
- 1:10:58And then we were like, let's fix the throttle because the
- 1:11:00throttle like it just felt like sticky.
- 1:11:03And we undid all of the throttle linkage.
- 1:11:06And that is a complicated system.
- 1:11:08I mean, you're going from like, it's like it, there's, there's
- 1:11:13so many different like cranks and rods and it's not a cable.
- 1:11:16It's a big, it's a long rod and it has like 3 like 3 like like
- 1:11:22points where it sort of attaches underneath this long tunnel in
- 1:11:26the car. And then there's like this weird
- 1:11:28coat hanger thing that goes like, I mean it's like so
- 1:11:30German. It's like, you know that game
- 1:11:34Mousetrap, where it's like the thing.
- 1:11:35Goes click, click, click. Click and then the ball like
- 1:11:38kind of rolls around and it like does all these different moves.
- 1:11:41We realized that a lot of the bits were either super gunked up
- 1:11:44or actually jammed in the center tunnel.
- 1:11:47We found the old original like linkage boot in there.
- 1:11:51So it's just this like rust, this like gross deteriorating
- 1:11:55rubber bit that was just jammed in the tunnel.
- 1:11:57And I'm like, Oh my gosh, no wonder this is so hard to drive.
- 1:12:02We cleaned it up. We got new.
- 1:12:03Parts. We greased it, you know, and,
- 1:12:05and we put it back together and I just actually drove it down
- 1:12:08because we're putting a new windshield on it too, so I can
- 1:12:10actually see something out of it.
- 1:12:12It was like smoked and pitted. Drove it not have it whistle at
- 1:12:15you and not have it whistle new seals.
- 1:12:18My friend was doing some welding because.
- 1:12:19It had gotten a little rusty in the base of the the windshield.
- 1:12:23I drove it down to Oceanside last weekend and I was like, I
- 1:12:29get it now. I am so happy it cruised.
- 1:12:34At like 70. Miles an hour, 3700 RPM.
- 1:12:39It just hummed. It felt so good.
- 1:12:43It I I have the Sprint classics from Bredesstein on it.
- 1:12:48It drives like a It's a dream. Like a dream.
- 1:12:52A dream I love. It.
- 1:12:55I can't wait to get any. Windshield on it.
- 1:12:57I honestly. I'll daily drive that thing now.
- 1:12:59That's awesome. 100% that's amazing.
- 1:13:03Well, and I love. That you went with.
- 1:13:05Like, and I don't know if there's a term for it, but you,
- 1:13:08you made sure the interior was all updated.
- 1:13:11You guys put in a new interior. We, we, we gutted the whole
- 1:13:14thing. It was gross.
- 1:13:16There was like tall manner of vermin living in it and like
- 1:13:20pooping, chewing, fornicating, whatever it was they were all
- 1:13:24doing there. You name it, like what's
- 1:13:27happening. There were more.
- 1:13:29Spiders in that. Car like it was a Black Widow
- 1:13:33haven and well, the day that we put it in Aaron's car and we put
- 1:13:37it up on his lift and I'm not kidding.
- 1:13:40Like it's like they just did like a commando.
- 1:13:42Like they were just like, like all like, like, like putting out
- 1:13:47of the car and like he's like, fuck, I have so many spiders in
- 1:13:51my garage now even hate the thing.
- 1:13:54And so it was that was kind of like, yeah, there was a lot to
- 1:13:58do. So we gutted the interior.
- 1:14:01We watched a bunch of videos on YouTube and one guy was like,
- 1:14:04yeah, it should take you like 40 hours to do the carpet and we're
- 1:14:07like 40 hour carpet, just the carpet.
- 1:14:10And yeah, took us about 40 hours to.
- 1:14:12Do the carpet. Turns out he knew what he was
- 1:14:14talking about. We did the.
- 1:14:16Carpet. We did the.
- 1:14:17We did the. All the upholstery I did not
- 1:14:20reupholster. I bought a kit.
- 1:14:22Thank God for for like very easy to get Porsche parts in Southern
- 1:14:28California. God bless Pelican parts, God
- 1:14:30bless Sierra Madre collection, God bless Stoddard.
- 1:14:34God. I mean these guys, it's like
- 1:14:35honestly, it's like going to a pharmacy.
- 1:14:38You like call in your prescription and they're like,
- 1:14:39it's ready for you to pick it up the next day and you're like, so
- 1:14:43it so yeah, it was a it was a labor of love.
- 1:14:46I've never done an. Interior before and The funny
- 1:14:49thing is is we lifted we had to lift we pulled the seats out to
- 1:14:52do all this recent work and we're like lifting out all the
- 1:14:55bits of carpet and all of this stuff and and Aaron and I are
- 1:14:59like admiring our work we're like which is pretty good This
- 1:15:03thing looks this looks professional like you did all.
- 1:15:06Right. Yeah.
- 1:15:08And so now I, I, I, I'm starting to understand, like, OK, like I,
- 1:15:13I'm going to fall in love with this car all over again for all
- 1:15:15different reasons, and I'm just thrilled about it.
- 1:15:19Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they're only going to go up
- 1:15:21in value and. On that note, we had Haggerty's
- 1:15:25John Wiley on a couple weeks back, OK, talk about his bull
- 1:15:29market list and then we followed it up with our own That car show
- 1:15:32bullshit market list. I love it.
- 1:15:35So cars that we think are going to go up and value.
- 1:15:38In the near future. And I've heard the 912, you
- 1:15:40know, and some of these lists, if you had to pick two or three
- 1:15:43cars, maybe the 912 is 1. What's on the Lynn Woodward
- 1:15:47bullshit market list? I have the bullshit market list.
- 1:15:51That's amazing. Just because my friend owns a
- 1:15:55Montero, I'm going to say the Mitsubishi Montero.
- 1:15:58I think that's great. Definitely, definitely on up.
- 1:16:02Is this your? Former Montero.
- 1:16:04No, I already sold mine. I probably sold mine at.
- 1:16:07Peak by the way, there you go. No, I just think I I mean I I do
- 1:16:11think there is still that kind of allure for those sort of boxy
- 1:16:15looking off roaders off roading is def over landing definitely
- 1:16:18not going anywhere anytime soon. So I would think that those kind
- 1:16:22of those, those vehicles that are not the really out of the
- 1:16:27kind of the out of price range like Land Rovers and old Land
- 1:16:32Cruisers like the Montero or or even an Isuzu, Yeah, the more
- 1:16:40accessible I think those things are.
- 1:16:42Definitely are definitely primed to.
- 1:16:44Rise, that's a great answer. That's a great answer.
- 1:16:46And the 912 too, I mean. And I don't.
- 1:16:48Say that just because I own. But because because everyone has
- 1:16:52been so priced. Out of the. 911 it's so amazing
- 1:16:56to me. I there is a crew of 912 of 912
- 1:17:00owners in Southern California. They've like become a little
- 1:17:03gang man. It's like, it's like the 912
- 1:17:06posse and they were in full effect at Luft 10.
- 1:17:11My car was very, very graciously accepted to that car show.
- 1:17:16It was again, right after we had finished Jeff's wort was, I
- 1:17:20mean, he put, he put me in a place I could never have
- 1:17:23possibly dreamed, I thought was a place of high honor.
- 1:17:27And I was very grateful for him. And he was so kind.
- 1:17:29He's like you earned this, you really did.
- 1:17:31And it looked fantastic and thank you.
- 1:17:33I got to be there. For a few people that came by
- 1:17:36and it was really fun to be like, this is her car and she's
- 1:17:40done all the work. I mean, he had it coming.
- 1:17:42He had it literally positioned in front of a barn.
- 1:17:44And it was such because it was such a barn.
- 1:17:46It was so cool. But there's, you know, there's
- 1:17:50Aaron's. There's Aaron's.
- 1:17:51Car with all the. Surfboards on them.
- 1:17:53That was Aaron Action. There's yeah, there is so so.
- 1:17:57Many like really wonderful 912. Examples that were there and
- 1:18:03yeah, I mean the first time I took it out to a cards and
- 1:18:05coffee, the first like it's dry run the first time soft launch
- 1:18:10is what we called it. Some guy was like, you want to
- 1:18:12sell it? Like he's like how much you want
- 1:18:15for it? And I'm like, bro, like, bro,
- 1:18:17this is my first time out. Like I'm not selling it right
- 1:18:19now. I got, I got a lot more of these
- 1:18:21left in me. We're just concerned.
- 1:18:23Yeah. Yeah, it was awesome.
- 1:18:25It was. Yeah, it was.
- 1:18:26Great. But that 912 I think is.
- 1:18:27Is definitely one that's that's one to watch for sure.
- 1:18:30Very cool. Great answers, both yeah, well,
- 1:18:34and yours. Is just such a cool example
- 1:18:36because it's got a. Red interior which is gorgeous.
- 1:18:38You guys did an amazing job on a red interior and me too.
- 1:18:42Yeah, always wanted a red. Interior.
- 1:18:44Well, and you left. The outside with the patina.
- 1:18:48On it, yes, which is so cool. Not intended, actually.
- 1:18:52Because we were looking, I was. Like, oh, what's?
- 1:18:54Good. I wanted a red interior that was
- 1:18:56not negotiable because I've always wanted a car with a red
- 1:18:58interior, especially like a sports car.
- 1:19:01And I was like, what goes with red?
- 1:19:03Like what goes what's great with like you could do with red
- 1:19:06combination. And I was like, OK, it was
- 1:19:08silver at the time and, and, and I when I bought it and I was
- 1:19:12like, but it's really like really rough because it's been
- 1:19:14outside for a long time. And I thought, well, Aga Blue
- 1:19:19was the first choice because I just love Aga Blue is so
- 1:19:23gorgeous. But you could also do like a,
- 1:19:25you could do white over red, which I think is really pretty,
- 1:19:28although I think that's, I think it's pretty and more more
- 1:19:31appropriate on an on a 356 is the white on red.
- 1:19:35And then you could what's the classic combo, though?
- 1:19:36You could do silver over red, which is such a.
- 1:19:39With such an iconic. German, you know, back, right?
- 1:19:43I mean, that's like kind of the, that's it, the Silver Arrow like
- 1:19:47era. And I thought, OK, great.
- 1:19:50Well, but I don't want to wait around.
- 1:19:52For two. Years while it sits in some
- 1:19:54guy's shop waiting to be rotisserie and, and all of these
- 1:19:58things. And also I don't have 30 grand
- 1:20:01to spend on a brand new paint job.
- 1:20:04And so Aaron and I made a decision and I said, how about
- 1:20:07we do the interior and then we just and we drive it and then we
- 1:20:10see in like maybe five years like how we go and man, when we
- 1:20:14finish that interior, every single person except one.
- 1:20:18My mom was like, of course don't ever paint it.
- 1:20:23Don't ever paint. It and.
- 1:20:24Now I'm I, I'm not precious about it.
- 1:20:27I could take it to the grocery store.
- 1:20:29Some guy hit me, hit my car. They were opening their car
- 1:20:32door. I was opening mine and they hit
- 1:20:33me and I was like, like, just like, be careful next time, man.
- 1:20:38Like, but, but I wasn't like my paint job, like my, my $5000
- 1:20:44paint job. You ask how like I would drive
- 1:20:46it so differently and I wouldn't get the, I wouldn't get as much
- 1:20:50enjoyment out of it. I have a good friend, good
- 1:20:52friends who they bought a launch of Fovea in Europe.
- 1:20:59They had every intention. Of keeping it like.
- 1:21:01Making it mechanically sound, but keeping the outside a little
- 1:21:05bit rough around the edges. They weren't they didn't care
- 1:21:07about it, but it had a lot of rust.
- 1:21:09And so it had to go to this professional guy.
- 1:21:11And then by the time they kind of realized like, Oh my gosh, we
- 1:21:15kind of went overboard with this thing.
- 1:21:16It had a beautiful paint job on it.
- 1:21:18I mean, it was just perfect, pristine, gorgeous thing.
- 1:21:22They had it shipped over to the United States and like a year
- 1:21:25in, they're like, should we get like just another one where we
- 1:21:28can just kind of actually like drive around and have a good
- 1:21:31time? And they just, I think they just
- 1:21:33bought, they didn't buy a Fovea. I think they bought something
- 1:21:36else just but they don't they're not touching the exterior
- 1:21:39because they really don't want that stress of driving around.
- 1:21:44Just a like a Concorde looking car.
- 1:21:50And I'm very proud of the patina on mine.
- 1:21:53It actually looks. It looks like a pair of
- 1:21:55distressed Levi's. It's almost too perfect.
- 1:21:58You can't fake it either. When you try to it looks.
- 1:22:02Like ass. So like I mean you.
- 1:22:04Have. You know the real deal, you
- 1:22:06know, oh, it's the real deal. Don't, don't, don't.
- 1:22:09Don't ever lose authentic. Patina well, and it just.
- 1:22:11It's like the. Patina and the fact that it's
- 1:22:14silver and then the the beautiful red interior, it's
- 1:22:17like such a cool combination. It draws you in and you're like,
- 1:22:21what is the story here? And then for Lynn to have done
- 1:22:24so much of the work herself, it's just it's such a unique car
- 1:22:27and it looks so cool. Well, and I was pretty adamant
- 1:22:30about a new interior. I'm like, I'm not driving
- 1:22:32around. On this janky crap, like, if I'm
- 1:22:34in this thing, I want to look nice.
- 1:22:36Yeah. And it's funny because Aaron was
- 1:22:38like, oh, it's slippery slope. He's like you're going.
- 1:22:39To like the inside and then. You're going to really want to
- 1:22:41be outside. And I'm like, no, I'm fine.
- 1:22:43Yeah, it's cool. I've got some, I've got some
- 1:22:46decals on it. Like we have.
- 1:22:47We have these decals that are half Brontosaurus, half Pegasus,
- 1:22:52because a friend of mine that got the same guy who's doing the
- 1:22:55helping me do the welding, it's kind of a tongue in cheek thing
- 1:22:58of the Pegasus, of the Pegasus, the Mobil One Pegasus.
- 1:23:01But we're not sponsored by Mobil One.
- 1:23:03We're not that cool. So it's the Sinclair
- 1:23:06Brontosaurus head and Pegasus wings and butt in the butt of
- 1:23:13the brontosaurus. And we're we're Pegasaurus
- 1:23:17racing. And there are four cars now that
- 1:23:20have those decals on them. Two of Logan's cars, his brother
- 1:23:25has another car, another sticker, another decal.
- 1:23:28And then our our car has the decals too.
- 1:23:30So we've kind of made this fun joke out of like, we're just
- 1:23:33like the cool, we're not cool Pegasus people.
- 1:23:37We're brontosaurus. We're Brontosaurus Pegasus
- 1:23:41adjacent. Yeah, Pegasus racing.
- 1:23:43Yeah, we. Had we had Logan?
- 1:23:45On the show, Gosh, before. Car Week last year, a while ago,
- 1:23:48we did, Yeah. What a what?
- 1:23:50Another great guest. Yeah.
- 1:23:52And he was amazing, Yeah. He made T-shirts for us that
- 1:23:55for. For Luft.
- 1:23:56That said, Pegasaurus Racing, we're only here for the food or
- 1:24:02the snacks. Maybe it was.
- 1:24:04We're just. Snacks, snacks, snacks.
- 1:24:05It's. A best Oh yeah, here for the
- 1:24:08snack. I love it.
- 1:24:10Yeah, it's been really fun to watch that journey.
- 1:24:12Yeah, but one more coming right on.
- 1:24:16I can't wait. So one thing that I wanted.
- 1:24:19To ask you about. Because I loved the picture that
- 1:24:21you posted of you in the car. I thought it encapsulated sort
- 1:24:26of the joy that these car we as car enthusiasts feel when we get
- 1:24:29to experience new things. And it was the picture of you in
- 1:24:32the Aston Martin Vantage S So tell me about that.
- 1:24:37And you got to drive it over the snake, which I have yet to
- 1:24:40experience. So tell us everything I did so.
- 1:24:43Yeah. So.
- 1:24:45Aston Martin has been, you know, I have been really fortunate in
- 1:24:49that I have been able to drive a lot of their, the sort of the
- 1:24:53later and newer iterations of their cars over the years.
- 1:24:56And you know, you, you, you realize that building
- 1:25:00relationships in this, in this industry is kind of is really
- 1:25:03important with the PR people. And some of those people have, I
- 1:25:06will say, have become my friends.
- 1:25:07And I hope they're my friends and they're not just like, hey,
- 1:25:11I guess we have to hang out with you because they're, they're
- 1:25:14just really good at their jobs. They're an outlet that we.
- 1:25:16Want but so I was. Invited to do a drive and
- 1:25:21sometimes for those, some of those cars, you know, it's, it's
- 1:25:24a really expensive proposition and you know, Aston Martin is
- 1:25:27not completely flush with money. And, and so they, they had a
- 1:25:31drive out in just in Westlake Village, which is quite close to
- 1:25:35my house. And they, yeah, they gave me a
- 1:25:38half a day with the, with the Vantage S.
- 1:25:40And so the Vantage has just seen a pretty, a pretty big refresh
- 1:25:44and, and redesigned a couple of years ago.
- 1:25:48And there was a drive, I think they did a drive in in Sevilla,
- 1:25:52Seville Fane. They invited me to that.
- 1:25:56And then I gave the trip to Jeff Glucker, my good friend and
- 1:25:59Glucker, because I, I just my schedule was such that it was
- 1:26:02crazy. And he, I knew he would be a
- 1:26:05really a wonderful representative and a just
- 1:26:09perfect person for to drive my car.
- 1:26:11So I was really keen to get in it because I had not been in it.
- 1:26:14And so the S is just a little bit judged, right.
- 1:26:17It's not, it's not an evolution. It's, it's not a revolution.
- 1:26:21It's just like an evolution. Everything is just a little bit
- 1:26:24sharper, you know, a little bit more horsepower, not a ton, some
- 1:26:30more stiffness, especially lateral stiffness.
- 1:26:33They've kind of reimagined the, the, the way that the, the
- 1:26:36subframe is mounted in the back. It's not it's now mounted like
- 1:26:39completely around. It's not just in like sort of
- 1:26:42places, but it's a complete, like they've completely mounted
- 1:26:46it sort of firmly. And so I think they set up to
- 1:26:49like 30% more lateral stiffness in the car, which is a
- 1:26:53tremendous amount when you're talking about like sort of, you
- 1:26:56know, the doing coming in and out of turns.
- 1:26:59They've, they've also, they've upgraded some of their software
- 1:27:03so that so yeah, they're, they're trying to kind of just
- 1:27:06sharpen everything. And I was like, oh, this is
- 1:27:09going to be a great opportunity for me.
- 1:27:11The Vantage. The Vantage has always
- 1:27:13traditionally been like their entry level car.
- 1:27:15I say entry level with like, you know, ha ha, ha.
- 1:27:18But it's still, you know, it's now well into six figures.
- 1:27:21And I think Aston Martin has also seen kind of a, a
- 1:27:25rebranding that they are now aiming for not just not just
- 1:27:30sort of GT car status, like sort of luxury GT.
- 1:27:35Now they're really pushing a performance luxury space, which
- 1:27:40I'm not sure 100% that a lot of people live in that space.
- 1:27:43I think you're either performance or you are kind of
- 1:27:46luxury GT like living. And so I thought, I actually
- 1:27:51think it's a really inventive place.
- 1:27:53If you look at the DB12, it really pushes the envelope of a
- 1:27:57GT car, like pretty significant and it's definitely more
- 1:28:01performance minded. So I was really eager to drive
- 1:28:04it. And I know that the snake has
- 1:28:05just reopened and it's basically it's this little stretch that's
- 1:28:09kind of if you look like trying to describe this to people.
- 1:28:13How do I describe this to people?
- 1:28:15So there's like a little like you can get off the road and get
- 1:28:18on to Cane at like a road called Cane and Doom, which is like a
- 1:28:21kind of a main, main drag that goes from the valley all the way
- 1:28:25over to the beach to to Malibu and yeah, down to PCH.
- 1:28:30But but Mulholland. It you know.
- 1:28:34Used to cut all the way through and there was this one section
- 1:28:37that was right before Kanan that was just, I mean it is just like
- 1:28:41me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me.
- 1:28:44I mean, hence they called it the snake and it was closed for
- 1:28:48seven years, a very, very long time.
- 1:28:51Now when I was a kid, like I, I think it was closed for that
- 1:28:54long. I mean, it's been, it's been a
- 1:28:56while. I don't know.
- 1:28:57I'd have to look it up. But no, I think you're right.
- 1:29:00But yeah, it's a long time. It's a long time and.
- 1:29:03So you would have. You wouldn't be able to cut all
- 1:29:05the way. Through to off Mulholland, you
- 1:29:08would have to kind of cut around.
- 1:29:10It wasn't significantly like crazy, cut around, get on to
- 1:29:13Canaan, keep going on Canaan and then turn right back on to
- 1:29:17Mulholland if you wanted to continue on Mulholland.
- 1:29:19And so I thought, oh, I thought, well, this is going to be a
- 1:29:22really nice place. And they were quite close and
- 1:29:24they had a drive route for us. And I was like, y'all, I grew up
- 1:29:27here, can I just go drive it wherever I want, hold my beer,
- 1:29:31hold my beer around. And they were like, sure.
- 1:29:34This is nice they. Trust me, like I've been around
- 1:29:36for a minute. I've I've driven their cars.
- 1:29:39And so I did. So I went, I actually drove it
- 1:29:42three times. The snake, I drove it up, I
- 1:29:45drove it back. And then I was like, no, I think
- 1:29:47I'm going to do it again. And I drove it back around and I
- 1:29:49did it, I did it again. So yeah, what a tremendous car.
- 1:29:56I mean, I've got a video coming out and that and that will be up
- 1:29:59on on our YouTube channel. But man, I mean, first of all,
- 1:30:04no one does an exhaust note like Aston Martin.
- 1:30:07And I don't know if this is still the case, but back in the
- 1:30:09day, they're like, we have, we have two guys.
- 1:30:12Their only job is to tune the engine note.
- 1:30:15That's their only job. You just make it sound like
- 1:30:19music and boy, I mean those cars just sound so beautiful and and
- 1:30:25like raucous, but in just like this, like elegant, like non
- 1:30:29like offensive or or disruptive way, and it's just so beautiful.
- 1:30:33But there was really I mean nothing that would that upset
- 1:30:37that car. It was just it was smooth, but
- 1:30:40it was powerful and it wasn't too much, but it wasn't wasn't
- 1:30:44it wasn't. It was just enough.
- 1:30:45The brakes like weren't really confident, but not like so
- 1:30:49grabby that like if you're coming out of your driveway or
- 1:30:52like that, you know, like you're this like you private.
- 1:30:55What a perfect car to go definitely experience on the
- 1:30:59track and have a really great time and at the same time could
- 1:31:03be a very I would say even a very quite practical daily
- 1:31:06driver. That's wild.
- 1:31:09I mean, how many cars can you say that about these days and
- 1:31:11it? Looks the business.
- 1:31:13You posted a side profile shot. I guess it's an oxymoron profile
- 1:31:17shot right of the car on Instagram.
- 1:31:20And it just looks so good, like the proportion of the wheel to
- 1:31:23like the spectacular sheet metal that just.
- 1:31:26Yeah. And here's the thing I love.
- 1:31:27Porsches I love. Modern Porsches they're.
- 1:31:29Fantastic. You see a lot of them in
- 1:31:32Southern California. Yeah.
- 1:31:33And to me, it's not unique. It's not.
- 1:31:36I say this about, I'll say this about the Lotus too.
- 1:31:39Sure, because especially the Avora, like the Amir is, it's
- 1:31:45lovely. And I think they're they're
- 1:31:46beautiful cars. But man, if you're spending the
- 1:31:49same amount of money and you have an opportunity to do
- 1:31:52something that's kind of like zagging when everybody else is
- 1:31:55zagging, Yeah, why wouldn't you do it?
- 1:31:59I mean, the, the the Vantage S has similar power to the 9/11
- 1:32:03turbo. Like, it's not like it's not a
- 1:32:06chintzy car at all. Didn't realize that.
- 1:32:09But the proportions like it's just, it's so beautiful.
- 1:32:11It's a very different driver because you're talking like
- 1:32:14different engine placement and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:32:16And but, but yeah, it was really, it was a really, you
- 1:32:21know, a spectacular driving afternoon.
- 1:32:23And there was, I saw one other car on the Snake.
- 1:32:27Oh my gosh, it was like, oh, it was a Tuesday afternoon.
- 1:32:30So. Go Tuesday afternoon because
- 1:32:33there weren't no cops either. It was great.
- 1:32:35Yeah. Because that's been a big topic.
- 1:32:37Yeah. Speaking of Zag.
- 1:32:38So Lindsay? Loves a good Pontiac Aztec.
- 1:32:42I have a soft spot for AK car town and country convertible
- 1:32:46with the wood on side. If you really, you know, yeah,
- 1:32:52what's your automotive guilty pleasure?
- 1:32:53Now we know know you a bit more. What's your, what's your
- 1:32:56automotive guilty pleasure? If you were gonna just really
- 1:32:59get something out of left field, I think honestly the first one
- 1:33:04that comes into mind is like an AMC.
- 1:33:05Eagle like I think those are like kind of just kooky and
- 1:33:09crazy yes as kooky as can be yeah that's a so I.
- 1:33:14Love. Like like a like.
- 1:33:16A 70s like van conversion that just has like thick airbrushing
- 1:33:21on the side of this wizard. Yeah, I think whatever, chick.
- 1:33:25On Unicorn like. Unicorn farting.
- 1:33:28Like I think I think something like that would be really just
- 1:33:33fun to roll up to in a car show and open it up and just kind of
- 1:33:36have like a BBQ out of that out of one of those.
- 1:33:39But something that would be a fan favorite.
- 1:33:41I mean, this is so Aaron. Aaron to me has like some of the
- 1:33:44best and most eclectic automotive tastes.
- 1:33:47He just bought a 1912 white and it's it's A7 seater and he's
- 1:33:54just like embracing this like old like 100 year plus car.
- 1:33:59Like he's gone pre war on us all and we I'm I'm here for brass
- 1:34:05era. Yeah, like it's so I went.
- 1:34:09So Lindsay, I think you and I were talking about this, but I
- 1:34:12went to this like it was this brass era like Christmas parade
- 1:34:16that they didn't stop Pasadena. Listen, you can drive a
- 1:34:20Lamborghini. Around you can drive a.
- 1:34:23Ferrari around and you're going to get a couple heads to turn,
- 1:34:26that's fine. You have never seen more people
- 1:34:30stop in their tracks and look at these things that are just from
- 1:34:34another planet. Like what?
- 1:34:37Like what is that? Like more eyeballs on these
- 1:34:41brass era cars than you will ever get on any kind of
- 1:34:45supercar? It's special and it's really
- 1:34:48neat. And so I love that I'm being
- 1:34:51exposed to something that I I just really have not a whole lot
- 1:34:56of experience with, with this whole other part of, you know,
- 1:35:00of the automotive industry. That's another thing that's all
- 1:35:03great about it, right? It's like, I know there's so
- 1:35:05much history, there's so much and, and there's there's
- 1:35:09something to love every. There's something to, there's
- 1:35:11something to love everywhere. Well, and talk about both ends
- 1:35:14of the spectrum and yeah, I mean.
- 1:35:16Just to give people a picture, it's the Horseless Carriage
- 1:35:19Holiday Tour, which such an evocative name for me because
- 1:35:23you just immediately know. And so how many cars
- 1:35:26participated, like roughly probably.
- 1:35:29I mean, they're probably like 70 cars.
- 1:35:32I mean, there was a lot. Of cars there.
- 1:35:33They were like going on this tour of lovely San Marino and
- 1:35:37Pasadena. And we were just like, it was
- 1:35:39nice. And people would stop and honk
- 1:35:41and look and wave and, ah, it's it was marvelous.
- 1:35:46Well, in San Marino is such a moment in time.
- 1:35:48I think, you know, like that's. Where father of the bride, the
- 1:35:50father of the bride house is and it's just, it's a lot of it.
- 1:35:54You know, they have like a soda fountain there still and a lot
- 1:35:56of it, it feels like from another era.
- 1:35:59So that's the most perfect place to enjoy those cars, which are
- 1:36:02obviously from another era. So I love that they're getting
- 1:36:07out and being driven. Switching the brake and
- 1:36:09accelerator pedals is really living too.
- 1:36:11You know the location. I did a story once for I did a
- 1:36:14story for Haggerty. About the first woman who drove
- 1:36:17across country. It's one of my favorite things
- 1:36:20that I've done that I'm most proud of as far as my work is
- 1:36:22concerned. And I I did was she did it in a
- 1:36:2819 O nineteen O 9. Maxwell and I couldn't find a
- 1:36:34nineteen O 9, but I think I found a nineteen O 6.
- 1:36:37And it was actually owned by the same guy who put together a car
- 1:36:42for someone to for a woman to recreate the drive.
- 1:36:45And his family had been had owned Maxwell's for a really
- 1:36:48long time. And he lived up in Northern
- 1:36:52California, right up like outside, you know, outskirts of
- 1:36:55Sacramento. And I went up to his he had this
- 1:36:57big farm and he's like, Oh yeah, he's like, you just shoot it on
- 1:36:59my farm. And he had a covered bridge and
- 1:37:02all this stuff. And I, Aaron is so great because
- 1:37:05she's all about the theater of these of these of these stories.
- 1:37:10And he's like, well, you got to dress up.
- 1:37:12You got to wear like a duster and a hat and like you got to
- 1:37:15wear the clothes. Like you got to wear the
- 1:37:17clothes. And I was like, wear the
- 1:37:18clothes. Like, what is this?
- 1:37:19I'm not in like cosplay. And he's like, I guarantee you
- 1:37:23if you do it, it will make the story like a million times
- 1:37:26better. And I was like, OK, fine.
- 1:37:28So I also invited my friend Emmy, who does what I do.
- 1:37:32And I was like Emmy Hall. She's a costume designer first.
- 1:37:35She went to Yale School of Drama for her Graduate School.
- 1:37:38Like she's this insane like so sower.
- 1:37:42And I was like, car people was how multifaceted we all are.
- 1:37:45All right. I was like, we're.
- 1:37:46Dressing up. I don't care how Gooberry.
- 1:37:49We look, but we're dressing up and we're wearing the outfits
- 1:37:52and we're going to drive this part.
- 1:37:53And driving that car was probably 1 of the hardest cars
- 1:37:58I've driven. I've driven tanks.
- 1:38:00I mean, I've driven a lot of. And it was really challenging to
- 1:38:04find, you know, finding the gears and, and, you know, your
- 1:38:08oil is just, there's no like oil is recycling through.
- 1:38:10It's just dripping. It's just like, it's just that
- 1:38:13that's how oil used to do. It would lubricate the engine
- 1:38:16and then it would just drip out and it would that's it.
- 1:38:18You would leave it on the ground.
- 1:38:19And that was then then you had to fill it up again.
- 1:38:21And then it was like, amazing. Yeah, but man, driving that
- 1:38:26thing. And learning about that car.
- 1:38:28And learning about how she and it was basically over landing at
- 1:38:32that point because there were no roads, roads were dirt and they
- 1:38:35were, you know, they there were there were only maps that that
- 1:38:38were from like the like east of the Mississippi, Like there was
- 1:38:43nothing like like West of it. It was just like, I don't know,
- 1:38:46let's follow some power lines or some cold, like maybe going
- 1:38:50toward a city. But learning about her story and
- 1:38:54what she went through in 19 O nine with she took two women
- 1:38:59with her, her sisters in law and their 16 year old neighbor.
- 1:39:03And they had they had some, some people who like accompanied them
- 1:39:09along the way, but she did not accept like help from them.
- 1:39:13And there was there was some repairs that that had to be
- 1:39:15done. Like I think at one point she
- 1:39:17did like an axle broke or something or she had like some
- 1:39:20of her tie rods that she needed to redo.
- 1:39:22But she tried to troubleshoot along the way and a lot of the
- 1:39:26techniques that she used using, you know, she they would pull
- 1:39:30boards off of a off of a fence and like jam them under tires if
- 1:39:34they got if they got stuck in mud, almost like I would today
- 1:39:38with Max tracks, like one of the traction boards or whatever.
- 1:39:43One of like. Recovery.
- 1:39:45Gear that they were like using. Like strips of canvas to do, to
- 1:39:49like to, to use for traction. I mean, all of these things, it
- 1:39:53was just like really inventive stuff.
- 1:39:55I think at one point their car, the car overheated and they
- 1:39:58dumped out their little perfume bottles and they went and they
- 1:40:02filled up the, they, they found some puddles and they filled up
- 1:40:06their perfume bottles with water to put those into the radiator
- 1:40:09so that they could continue on to the next city and, and get
- 1:40:12some get service from a Maxwell dealership.
- 1:40:16And so like writing stuff like that and like thinking of like
- 1:40:19those cars and you think about like the difficulty of that.
- 1:40:23And there was this like, super rugged woman who at the time was
- 1:40:26like, sure, why not? OK, how brave that was.
- 1:40:31How brave? Yeah, Out into the unknown,
- 1:40:32right? So brave.
- 1:40:34Super cool. Cool.
- 1:40:35That is super cool. That's badass.
- 1:40:36Yeah. So what was her?
- 1:40:38Where can we find that? Article because I would love to
- 1:40:40read it. OK, so.
- 1:40:41You her name was Alice Ramsey and you can.
- 1:40:44You can find that story in online at Haggerty, it's called
- 1:40:48Alice in Yonderland. I was very, I was quite proud of
- 1:40:51that title. I love it.
- 1:40:54But yeah, you can you can find it there.
- 1:40:56And and yeah, it was it was such a joy.
- 1:41:00I love doing those stories for Haggerty because I really get to
- 1:41:03dig into subjects that I normally wouldn't be exposed to.
- 1:41:08And they let me just go for, you know, 3500 words, which is just
- 1:41:13a beautiful, beautiful photography from James Lippmann,
- 1:41:16who is just magical photographer.
- 1:41:20I mean, his work is he can make, he can make magic out of dirt.
- 1:41:25Like it's so incredible what he does.
- 1:41:28There are a few photographers that I really, really love and
- 1:41:30respect and he's one of them. And I did another story for
- 1:41:34Haggerty about a woman named Helen Rother, who was one of the
- 1:41:38one of the first designers, the first female designer at General
- 1:41:42Motors and part of a very, you know, a large group of women
- 1:41:46called Harley. I think it was like, oh, I can't
- 1:41:51remember. But anyway, Harley Earl.
- 1:41:54Harley Earl hired a bunch of weapons in to be designers at
- 1:41:58General Motors. And then she she went off on her
- 1:42:00own and she designed a bunch of stuff.
- 1:42:02And what an incredible career. You will find if you do some
- 1:42:06digging around that women are really the ones who who were
- 1:42:10instrumental in turning rather, you know, sort of bland and drab
- 1:42:15interiors into really fabulous looking spectacles.
- 1:42:18Something that is so important to us today, right, With all of
- 1:42:21our gazmos and gizmos and gadgets.
- 1:42:25I'm saying it, right. But they'd come up with things
- 1:42:28like a tissue dispenser or there was one that had like a bottle
- 1:42:31warmer in it so you could warm bottle through your baby.
- 1:42:35Seems so modern. These are just really cool,
- 1:42:38inventive things. That.
- 1:42:40That that women were were really were really at the sort of at
- 1:42:43the cutting edge of. And and so I got to do a story
- 1:42:45about her too, and the Nash that she kind of designed the
- 1:42:49interior of the of the Nash, which was a car, frankly, I
- 1:42:52think was a little bit ahead of its time because it was compact
- 1:42:55in a in an era when these, you know, the big finned cars were
- 1:42:58so very much of of the moment. So it's honestly, it's been
- 1:43:04such. An incredible and.
- 1:43:05Varied. 10 years. For me, and I really do enjoy
- 1:43:08doing the the, the stories about the people because cars are
- 1:43:12wonderful and they're terrific, but we really connect with the
- 1:43:15people and that that to me is what makes it really special.
- 1:43:21That's so cool. I think there's a documentary or
- 1:43:24a movie. Coming out about that group of
- 1:43:26women, I just saw something recently.
- 1:43:28Really. There was a name for them.
- 1:43:30I know what you're saying and I can't think.
- 1:43:32Of it, of course. But damsels in design, I love
- 1:43:36it. That was the name.
- 1:43:37There was a book. I have a book.
- 1:43:39It's so. Good.
- 1:43:41It's so good and it highlights each one of them.
- 1:43:44I don't know if it was like, I don't, but Damsels in design, I
- 1:43:49don't want to leave. I'll find the book.
- 1:43:50I'll be like on for 20 minutes. But yeah, it's really
- 1:43:54remarkable. And of course, the second that
- 1:43:56Harley Earl left, the next incoming guy fired all of them.
- 1:44:00Yep, the damsels were disbanded. Much.
- 1:44:03I mean, Can you imagine if they had stayed together how that
- 1:44:07might have changed the cars that we have today or the I mean,
- 1:44:10and, and, and just women's participation in the automotive
- 1:44:13industry? Right.
- 1:44:14I mean, the to, to have to have had that kind of access and then
- 1:44:20sort of have it be kind of taken away.
- 1:44:23I, you know, I, I have done a lot of research and actually
- 1:44:27have a, a movie that I was writing about a woman named Joan
- 1:44:30Cuneo, who was a really prolific racing driver when she was when
- 1:44:37she was, it was back in, you know, the, the late 1800s, early
- 1:44:411900s. And he was, I mean, she was
- 1:44:45formidable. She was, she loved racing and
- 1:44:49she was this tiny little 5 foot, one inch woman.
- 1:44:52And she was, I mean, racing against the like the the like
- 1:44:58the top racers of the time in these.
- 1:45:01Like alphas? And, and these like these crazy
- 1:45:04cars and she was, she was beating them like she was like,
- 1:45:08like she was, she was a force to be reckoned with.
- 1:45:12And the AAA were, were the main sanctioning body of the, of
- 1:45:18racing in the United States. And there were women racing in
- 1:45:20Europe and, and doing all that kind of stuff.
- 1:45:23Some really, you know, some French women and some British
- 1:45:25women. And there were others in the
- 1:45:27United States that were kind of dabbling in it, but they would
- 1:45:29kind of come and go. But Joan was really the one that
- 1:45:32was sort of she was like, no, I love racing and I want to race.
- 1:45:35And she was married and she had a couple of children and and
- 1:45:39she, you know, she had a kind of a rocky divorce.
- 1:45:41And this doesn't surprise me, but because, you know, she was
- 1:45:46just such a kind of an independent thinking and strong
- 1:45:49willed woman and she was so good that the triple AI think it was
- 1:45:56in 1910 or 1911 banned women from sanction racing really.
- 1:46:02And so she's sort of credited with the woman.
- 1:46:04Who got women banned? Banned in in motor in
- 1:46:09Motorsports racing. The next time a woman raced
- 1:46:14officially in a sanctioned motorsport wasn't until I
- 1:46:20believe it was Indy in the 1940s.
- 1:46:24So imagine if that had not happened, the the, the exposure
- 1:46:29that women would have had in Motorsports.
- 1:46:33And really it was, it was. So I think it was a lot of it
- 1:46:36was precipitated by the manufacturers because they were
- 1:46:40very much a win on Sunday by on Monday system and a lot of
- 1:46:47people died racing. It was, you know, I mean, even
- 1:46:52in the in the 50s and 60s, it was like it was, it was a very
- 1:46:56dangerous proposition. Very dangerous.
- 1:46:59Now imagine how how? A manufacturer would feel if a
- 1:47:03woman died in their car racing, and I think that had a lot to do
- 1:47:08with it on top of the fact that it was like, who is this lady?
- 1:47:12You know why she you know she doesn't belong here.
- 1:47:14Like and. Yeah, and.
- 1:47:18So I I think that. That kind of had a lot to do
- 1:47:20with it is that that was obviously a very different time
- 1:47:23and women couldn't even vote at that point.
- 1:47:26You know, it's like, come on, There was a lot going on.
- 1:47:28There was a lot going on. We were working.
- 1:47:30We were working a lot. A lot of angles and so.
- 1:47:33It was, yeah, it was. I just I think about like the
- 1:47:37opportunities lost that that perhaps could have happened
- 1:47:42where I think women are much more embraced now in Motorsports
- 1:47:45on some levels. You know, I look at Susie Wolf
- 1:47:48and I go, oh, like, you know, F1 Academy is so great and it's
- 1:47:52like, it's really amazing. I love how how rally, how WRC
- 1:47:57has embraced women as not just not just, you know, Co drivers,
- 1:48:02but drivers. I look at Leah Block, who to me
- 1:48:04is like, just like a, a, a force to be reckoned with and, and
- 1:48:09someone to look at in the future.
- 1:48:10Sure. And just a lot of a lot of
- 1:48:13interest with, with women in Motorsports again.
- 1:48:17And and that's just sort of building and building and
- 1:48:19building, which is fantastic, right.
- 1:48:22Well, are you think like Sarah Price just competed in the deck
- 1:48:24art? Oh my girl Sarah Price.
- 1:48:27I know. So proud of her.
- 1:48:28Like holy I know. She literally went.
- 1:48:31From there to stayed in, stayed in Saudi did her boat racing
- 1:48:36that she says she's on, she's on, she's on Will Smith's team.
- 1:48:42So she's the team owner, right? Hydroplane boats or whatever.
- 1:48:46Those things are race is. There gets back here and just
- 1:48:51goes and kicks some serious ass at King of the Hammers.
- 1:48:54I'm like, yeah, it's unstoppable.
- 1:48:58I got. To chat with her.
- 1:48:59At Destination Defender in the fall.
- 1:49:02And we talked about Dakar and then she happened to mention the
- 1:49:05boats. And I'm like, wait, also tell me
- 1:49:07about that. So much, so much that car, by
- 1:49:10the way. Like, oh man, if I if money was
- 1:49:13no object and I could have any modern car, yeah, that defender
- 1:49:17Octa. Oh yeah, Lindsay, I know.
- 1:49:22It's transcendent, It is. Just.
- 1:49:26Sublime. I mean, shout out Sam Allen.
- 1:49:28I know. Yeah, we had Sam on the show.
- 1:49:31Too. Before Christmas.
- 1:49:33And yeah, I I got to go for a ride in one of the octaves with
- 1:49:37Davy Jones at Destination Defender.
- 1:49:40And I mean, my smile was probably like what your smile
- 1:49:43looked like in the Vantage S picture.
- 1:49:46It was just, you know, ear to ear.
- 1:49:48And because it's such a remarkable vehicle, I kept
- 1:49:52saying like you're, you know, you're looking at the road
- 1:49:54ahead. And when I was there, it was
- 1:49:56torrential downpour, like truly set up for, you know, off
- 1:50:01roading. Yeah, but the inside was a very
- 1:50:04luxurious experience. The dynamics of that thing
- 1:50:09shouldn't. Exist in nature agree the fact
- 1:50:14that you are driving so. You imagine it's the same
- 1:50:16hydraulic. It's the same hydraulic
- 1:50:18suspension that's that McLaren uses so highly sophisticated,
- 1:50:23right? And really what it's set up to
- 1:50:25do is to not upset the car like you're trying as much as you can
- 1:50:29for stability and for balance. And so obviously in a sports car
- 1:50:32it makes a lot of sense in an off road situation when you're
- 1:50:37going it's like at high speeds. Well, OK, that's another
- 1:50:41application where to me it makes perfect sense.
- 1:50:43But what it does is it it almost, at least to me in, in my
- 1:50:48experience of driving it within Octa mode was I almost felt like
- 1:50:52because we've kind of had an opportunity to I got to drive it
- 1:50:54around like a track that they had made at this at this event.
- 1:50:58I almost felt like I was driving on a gyroscope.
- 1:51:02So my center of gravity was like here, and the whole car was like
- 1:51:07rotating around the center of gravity and it almost didn't
- 1:51:12matter what you did to it. But nothing unsettled this car.
- 1:51:16It was just like stable and just eerie.
- 1:51:20It was a little wild. It was so.
- 1:51:23It was such. A wild sensation that while I
- 1:51:25was doing. It I was like, what voodoo is
- 1:51:27happening here because it's so just not what you're used to,
- 1:51:31especially at that ride. Height when you're kind of
- 1:51:33experiencing. It in a car that's that's that
- 1:51:35big with huge, you know with these huge off road tires on it
- 1:51:39and it's just I was wowed utterly I was so like poof wow
- 1:51:45that's cool I'll know about this I need to experience this and I
- 1:51:49know one of these kids is not like the.
- 1:51:50Others here, yeah, it's. Special.
- 1:51:53And then you find out like she's going and.
- 1:51:55Doing that car in it and I was like yeah, that tracks.
- 1:51:57That's cool. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:51:58I know. Well, Lynn, I'm, I'm afraid we.
- 1:52:01Could talk to you all evening and we almost know, but I feel
- 1:52:03like we need to let you go. This is a new record, I think.
- 1:52:07A minute or an hour. 50 That means we.
- 1:52:09You know, sorry, No, no, we've covered a lot of ground.
- 1:52:14We've. Learned SO.
- 1:52:15Much. We have homework, we have
- 1:52:16reading assignments that we have to go do, which I'm very excited
- 1:52:19to learn more about these stories.
- 1:52:21But yeah, exactly. And we'd love to have you come
- 1:52:25back. But until.
- 1:52:26Then tell the people where they can find you to follow along on
- 1:52:30your adventures and where they can see your Kelley Blue Book
- 1:52:32videos and all that. Absolutely.
- 1:52:34Instagram is really the best place to to kind of.
- 1:52:36Connect with me on all levels and it's at Lynn and then two
- 1:52:41underscores Woodward because some other Lynn Woodward is like
- 1:52:44got the other legit thing, but that's fine.
- 1:52:48So you can Lynn with 1 N, Lynn with 1 N Yeah, Lynn.
- 1:52:51And then two underscores. I make up for the NS and the
- 1:52:55underscores and there you can follow along with all of the
- 1:53:00kind of all of the renovations that I'm doing on the Porsche
- 1:53:03and all the work that I get to do there as well as any
- 1:53:05extracurricular stuff that I do. I love, you know, hopefully
- 1:53:09there's another trip to Goodwood in my future, which going to
- 1:53:12England is something. So I, I do all of those things
- 1:53:14and I, I will document all of those things on my Instagram
- 1:53:17page. As far as finding any car
- 1:53:20reviews, if people need some advice or are looking to sort of
- 1:53:24to buy a new car or the Kelley Blue Book YouTube channel is a
- 1:53:28great place to find and do some research on and what we on what
- 1:53:32I do. And, and yeah, hopefully the
- 1:53:35best part about my job is I feel like I get to help people make a
- 1:53:37really intimidating and very expensive decision these days.
- 1:53:41And so if I'm able to help somebody figure out what What
- 1:53:45Car is right for them, then, then, yeah, then I've done my
- 1:53:48job. Perfect.
- 1:53:50Well, that's it for this week's episode.
- 1:53:52Of that car show. We're so thrilled that you were
- 1:53:54able to join us. This is a genuine pleasure.
- 1:53:56Thank you. And I say the same.
- 1:53:59Thank you so much and for. For allowing me to to visit you
- 1:54:03on the show. Amazing.
- 1:54:05Well, we hope you'll come back, please.
- 1:54:07Like subscribe and tell your friends.
- 1:54:10Thanks again for joining us. We will see you next week.
- 1:54:12And until then, remember, always be driving.
- 1:54:17Thanks, Lynn.
