- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: And Tristan, we have another bad football team.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Well, uh, what can we say other than uh with uh the seasons kicking us kicking it in um in the worst possible way?
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Um not quite.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: It could have been worse.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Dang near.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: We are one and oh, my friend.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Hey, but we have been trained for this.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: We uh we have unfortunately taken our licks as tech fans, as I'm sure I could speak for the whole fan base when I say that.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Yep, but ladies and gentlemen, uh Saturday wasn't fun.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: And can I please, before we get into it, can I please start the podcast by apologizing to our audience?
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Um, in our last episode, I was saying, ladies and gentlemen, do not worry about this game.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Ladies and gentlemen, you can relax during this game.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Ladies and gentlemen, Texas Tech has no issues with FCS teams.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Oh, I just I I I may be responsible for the for the performance.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: That may be my fault.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: I didn't knock on the wood when I said that.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm I'm sorry, yeah, everybody.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: I blame it solely on you and Zach McPherson.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: But we'll get into Zach McPherson here shortly.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: But uh, you know, just a tough game overall.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Um not much good to take away from it.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: There are some positives that we'll get into.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: Um, but 35-33 Texas Tech uh survives is the word, Houston Baptist, in a game that was much closer than we all hoped.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Survives out last.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: These are the only adjectives that can be used.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Um hey, one and oh, the one and oh the Red Raiders protected the house.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: One and oh play that music.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: Play play the song, Steven! Play the song.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, we're gonna play uh Red Raider coming at you every time we get a win, and hopefully it's more than just this time this season.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: I I feel like we're we're very eager to play it this episode because it might be one of the only times.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: So maybe maybe one of the only times.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna keep the faith.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: We're gonna we're gonna ride this this train to the end.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: So we are, and uh Tristan, let me just get your uh initial reaction after we lost.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: What was going through your brain?
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: Honestly, I think well, we didn't lose, almost lost.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Well, it felt like a loss.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: It felt like a loss.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: Honestly, uh I would say that the feeling that went through my head is not again, you know.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: It's uh because I think we're just we're just so hungry for some solid gameplay out of a Texas tech football team.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Um, and it I I I believed it started in this game, you know.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: I was expecting this to scoot by this FCS team, no issue, uh, as I tried to make very crystal clear on the last podcast.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Um, but obviously it didn't happen.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: It was a game the entire time.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: It came down to the end, and all I was saying is it's a same stuff, different coach.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Um and uh and this the sad part is we only saw Cliff struggle with uh FCS team once, so I guess Wells gets his one.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: But um they shouldn't be allowed any.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Yes, this is it's just it's just kind of an unexcusable performance from a coaching staff.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: Whenever you're a a coach at a power five program, a winning power five power five program, I must say.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Uh it just that kind of thing is just unexcusable.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: You you you owe it to the Texas Tech fans to scoop by a team like that.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean, not scoop by, blow by.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: You know, I make a statement, say that this is uh where we are not gonna struggle with lower competition.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: We're gonna play that, we're gonna play it to the best of our ability.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: And I just didn't see it.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: I I I saw a team that was stooping way lower than they are, and uh just kept the other team in the game way longer than it should have been.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, to the end.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: So we you and me have experienced football disappointment at Texas Tech ever since we both stepped on campus in 2014.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: We started with Davis Webb, a dark horse Heisman candidate preseason, and uh we won four games.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: We won 12 games in two seasons with the best quarterback in the NFL currently, Patrick Mahomes.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: Uh we uh watched a season of Nick Schimonek start at quarterback and win five games, but somehow beat UT.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: Um and we've gone through countless Allen Bowman injuries these last two years, and during the entire run, we haven't seen one trace of a defense.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: And the only way to describe this game was an escape, and that's super disheartening to hear.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: No doubt, especially whenever we were seeing all these uh transfers come in, and uh we just felt like there was a new attitude towards the defense.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: You know, you and I were kind of talking about it during our defense preview, saying, Oh, this unit may not be as bad as it has been in the past.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: We're hoping that maybe we can reach mediocrity, you know, reach uh you know, 80 range defense total sort of thing.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: Um but uh I with with the way uh our backs in particularly played, it just it doesn't look like this is a defense that's currently built to survive a Big 12 season.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: The thing that concerns me almost most is uh mentally, this team doesn't seem to have it.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: They they let Houston Pabkis get to them.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Uh they were disheartened, the energy was not good, and that has a little something to do with there only being 11,000 people in the stadium, but it's it's up to you as a football program to be up and ready to play this game.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: And we were obviously not up and ready.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: And I think uh we were up 21 to 3 at one point.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then Alan Bowman overthrew uh he had two bad overthrows.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: Uh I believe this one was to Dalton Rigd.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: Um that would have put us up 28 to 3.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: And once he overthrew that, it was kind of all downhill from there.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: And one thing led to another.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: We gave up three massive touchdown plays, uh, two of them being 65 yards, one of them being a 75-yard touchdown.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: That can't happen.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: That can't happen.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: You can't give up three of those against any team.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: And we gave up three of those to an FCS program that has only been uh alive since 2013.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: And they finished second to last in their conference uh last season.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: Um uh to just before we we keep getting into our Red Raiders, um, you know, a lot of people were kind of joking about the fact that we got uh torched by they were really harping on the guy's name, Bailey Zappe.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm sorry, I was mispronouncing his name last podcast.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Um, this, I mean, I I I know our defense wasn't any good, but this kid can ball.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, that that kid was really capitalizing.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Uh if he can't ball, then he's a smart player because he was really capitalizing on our weak spots and he really ran up his yardage.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think this was a kid that was probably under-recruited.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, he he probably could be playing at the FPS level.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: So uh I and I'm not trying to excuse our defense in any sense.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: I just want to give a little um you know thumbs up to that performance because that that kid was unfazed.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: That kid went in there to win a game and he got dang near.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: And you just gotta respect the tenacity, is all I'm saying.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: 567 yards and four touchdowns for Bailey Zappe.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Uh we have to consider uh Houston Baptists is only playing three games this season.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: They have three shots at a win.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: They opened up against North Texas and got beat down pretty hard.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Uh and you gotta understand their mindset.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: Hey, we're playing three games this year.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: Let's just ball out these three games.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, just throw the ball a billion times, try to get take advantage of a program that is not known for their defense.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: And they did.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: And you got to give some respect to them and that coaching staff uh during a COVID-shortened season uh to come out into Lubbock and uh play the way they did and almost get a win over a power five program.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, you have to give credit to Houston Baptist, but uh it should have never happened.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: Absolutely not.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: You can definitely see there was a complete attitude difference on both teams.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: You know, one team wanted to win, and I have no idea where our boys were at.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Um, so it's it's kind of to kind of bring that into uh a talking point.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Was this on the coaches?
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Did the coaches not have our players ready, or do you think it was our players who didn't rise to the occasion?
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: I don't think it's a single single-sided issue here.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: I don't think it's all on Matt Wells, I don't think it's all on the players.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: I think it's a mixture.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: When you when you look at this team and how they they played mentally in this game, they were not in it.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: And that that has to do with the coaching staff.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: They have to get their guys ready, they have to shoot a little fire under them when they're playing bad, and that didn't happen.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: The players obviously go out on the field and do the work and did not play well.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: Um but you know, I just I just don't understand how you can be that ill-prepared for for a game defensively.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: Because offensively, all in all, we were fine.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: We scored 35 points, we had some overthrows.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: Bowman, I I liked his post-game presser where he was kind of explaining what exactly happened and how he was kind of in between.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: The man hasn't played in a year.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: I'll give him some some you know leeway there.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: Um but you know, we really should have had upwards of 40 to 50 points in this game if if those balls are thrown right, and they will be as the season progresses.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: I really believe that.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Um but defensively, I mean simple slant routes were getting us.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: I mean I mean, routes that every team has were getting us every single time.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: We gave up three massive plays, um, 60, 65, 65, and 75 yard touchdowns.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, that's solely on three three or four guys that I can name off.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, but it was just a just a bad showing overall by the defense.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: And and I really hope someone kicks their butt into gear for uh for Texas.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, great points, man.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: And you you really nailed it on their on your last statement there.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Uh our uh what I kept seeing on Twitter, and what I what I completely agree with is our packs looked lost.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: They looked like they didn't know where they were going.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: You know, what was going on?
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: They look like they look like they've never played football before.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: And I don't say that lightly.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Like they I there we played three sophomore backs in this game.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: We were missing Demarcus Fields, who is a senior uh corner, he's a senior defensive back, and he was truly missed because our three sophomore defensive backs, I'm talking in particular, Cameron Watts, Dadrian Taylor, Demerson, and Alex Hogan were absolutely look like they've never played football in their entire life.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh hopefully we can get some of these guys healthy, um, and we can go into the reasons why we had a lot of players miss uh here in a minute, but hopefully these guys don't have to play another snap this season.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Um a point that's been made on this podcast before is you know, oftentimes when we're watching our defense, um, we think that we have guys that may not be Big 12 talent, and that's what it looked like yesterday.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, shoot, did those guys look FCS talent?
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: You know, Cameron Watts on that last touchdown by Houston Baptist, that they probably they should have tied the game if if Zappy threw that pass a little more accurately.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: Um he messed up three separate times.
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, three uh this this one guy messed up three separate times on one on one drive.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: And you cannot have this.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: I don't care if he's a sophomore, I don't care if he's a true freshman.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: You can't have that.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: You need to pull him or you need to the guy needs to figure it out.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, this isn't this isn't high school football anymore, man.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: This is you're playing power five now, you're playing a Texas Tech.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: You are required to not mess up three times in one drive.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean you you're recruited for your ability.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: The uh the knowledge of the game is supposed to be a given to any any player being recruited out of high school.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: You know, you you gotta you you gotta know your role, you know, and it's unfortunately just looked like you kept saying, you know, it looks like they they just didn't know what was going on out there.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Um, and it was absolutely painful to watch because anytime it looked like we were about to go ahead and get it rolling, they would just throw a bomb and completely uh dismantle our momentum.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: And it just it just it felt like it was a competitive game the whole night, which it was, and it it just shouldn't have.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: And I think a lot of it has to do with the the way those packs played.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and another guy I needed to highlight because uh he was the biggest disappointment, in my opinion, in this game, and that's Zach McPherson.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: This is a guy that was named a team captain prior to this game, uh, a senior, a guy who spent some time at Penn State before transferring to Texas Tech.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: And I know he got the lone interception on the day.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: That wasn't even him, it was Brandon Boyer Randall who tapped that ball up into the air and he caught it and made an idiot mistake and tried and ran out of the end zone and got tackled on the one-yard line instead of going down in the end zone where you start at the 20.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: But besides that, three penalties for this man alone.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: Three of them two PIs and a holding call, all of which added up to about 40 yards and penalty yards from this one player.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: And he got cooked by their receivers.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, he had some plays, he made a few tackles, he got the interception, but overall, he was the most disappointing player in this game and in the secondary, and he needs to do better.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: For sure, man.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: And uh you're you're kind of bringing up a point that was really haunting us all game was penalties were atrocious.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, once again, it looks like this has been a problem for years.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Once again, it looks like our team is mentally undisciplined uh when it comes to uh penalties, because anytime you know uh we look like we're getting it together, we're just gonna get it we get a penalty, you know, and it just kind of throws a whole bounce off.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: Thirteen thirteen penalties for 104 yards.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: Thank you uh for filling that in.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: And um, so it's just whenever your defense is bad as ours, you can you can't go and give them the extras when we're already gonna be giving up so much.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and especially in this defense that looks like it's gonna keep the scheme of uh the the bend, don't break, what's it, the uh force interception sort of thing, uh where yardage is gonna be given up.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: So it's un untimely penalties because you talk about uh third and 15, you get a false start by Rico Jeppers.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was only a five-yard penalty, but but they got it.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: They ended up getting the third and ten on a 14-yard reception.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: So he would have been short had we not had the penalty.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: And they almost scored on that possession.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: That's the possession at the end of the half where we we made that goal line stand.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: Um I there's there's multiple things that's concerning about this defense, but I d I don't understand why Keith Patterson chooses to run the three-man rush basically every time.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: We get we had eight quarterback pressures this entire game.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: He had eight times where he was pressured to throw the ball.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, we had three sacks, which is good, but that does uh sacks aren't the whole story.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: People take sacks into like they just want to highlight that play and be like, oh well, you know, Eli Howard got two one and a half sacks, you know.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: He's you know, our defensive line must be pretty good.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: No, our defensive line was bad in this game.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: Um we need to get the quarterback more, we need to throw in some more blitzes, we didn't blitz enough.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: We when you only have three guys, you have they had five linemen guarding three of our not and I I mean I don't want to say this, but our our three pass rushers are not fantastic, just anyway.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: So when you only have three of them, you got five guys protecting the quarterback, Bailey Zappy has all the time in the world to throw the ball, and our defensive backs are clueless in the backfield.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're gonna they're gonna score a lot of points.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and um what what's it just kind of gives you a glimpse into a nightmare that can be.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, I mean, uh Bailey Zappy, he he had a great game, um, but this is nowhere close to the best quarterback we're gonna be playing all season.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: A lot of people a lot of people would have had a good game if you're only rushed eight times, if you're only pressured eight times, a lot of quarterbacks can do a lot with that.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: And uh, we haven't even uh looked at the rest of the Big 12 yet.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Um, but we have a game in two weeks where the quarterback in his in his game last weekend didn't exactly uh have any issues, you know, moving the ball down the field.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: Um, and this guy he's he's used to playing much better competition than Sam Ellinger, by the way.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: Um he's used to playing much better competition, and uh he's just gonna eat our defense alive if we don't figure out something to to uh to to reel it in, man.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: We need to pressure him.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, somehow, some way.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: I know we lost Broderick Washington.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: By the way, of our three key defenders we lost off this roster, Jordan Brooks, Broderick Washington, and Douglas Coleman, we missed Jordan Brooks the least.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: And he was the best player.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: And our linebacker core, I you know, we can put this under the positives when we talk about it.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: Our linebacking core was was alright.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: They weren't bad.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, Krishna Merriweather, 12 tackles.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: He got he somehow got Big 12 defensive player of the week.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Um, Boyer Randall, I really liked him.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: I I think he made some great plays in there.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: Um Rico Jeffers was a little disappointing uh for what I expected from him.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: Uh he only had about six tackles on the day.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: But uh we really missed Broderick Washington getting to the quarterback.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, being able to do that.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: We we had Jalen Hutchings got to him a couple times, but then he ended up getting injured.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: Eli Howard missed he missed a few tackles.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: Just just brutal.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: Um so uh I mean, I guess we can go on and on about how bad this uh defense did.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: Uh, we should probably we should probably move on.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Um it's making me it's making me really sad.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: I'm drinking this whiskey a little at a little faster pace.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: A little faster than he thought.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: I I have I have one more.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: I have one more thing.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: I didn't like Matt Wells' comments after the game.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: Uh obviously you're pissed off because you only won by two to an FCS program uh that you were favored by 42 points in.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: Uh he he went out, and the most concerning thing he said was our talking about the secondary.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, some plays we just got beat.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: This cannot be the case if you're gonna play Division I Power Five football against an FCS program.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: You can't just get beat by the Houston Baptist skill position guys.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: You aren't playing Alabama, you're not playing Boise State, hell, you're not even playing South Florida.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: You're not playing, you're playing Houston Baptist, a football team that has only existed since 2013.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: Hey, hey, hey, man.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, well, yeah, eight years, but we've been around for 95, so there's not that much of a gap, homie.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: Only yeah, only a few more years that we've been around.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: Only a slight head start.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: I didn't mean to cut you off.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Continue the roasting.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: No, you're good.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: That's what I was so upset about.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: I can't believe that the coach.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Went up there and sat and you know, some of these questions I know you don't want to talk to the media after a performance like this, but you can't to have no answer for why the secondary was so bad.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: I mean, no no anything to kick their butt into gear.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: Are these guys that soft, that mentally soft, that you can't tell them that they had a shitty game?
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, honestly, because I'm not saying you have to roast your guys after week one, but I'm saying that you need to light a fire under these guys because they really showed a poor, a poor performance.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I remember right after that game, I was like, um, definitely gonna stay longer because I want to see what Matt Wells has to say about this.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: Um, and so of course that was met with with a bit of a frustration like you were like when you're saying uh we went out there and got the win, you know, it may have not have looked like what we wanted.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, first thing he said, first thing he said was one and oh.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: That's the first thing we said joking.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: We're one and oh, baby.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: One-on-o, Texas Tech football undefeated in 2020.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: No, Matt, you don't say that.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: You don't say you're one-on-o.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: You should basically say, we basically lost.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: We should have lost this game.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: See, it because that kind of like bounces back off of like um during the Cliff era, you know, I we will we we wanted to see Cliff get mad so bad.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: So bad.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: So bad.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: And I so I was kind of I was kind of hoping Matt would be pissed off in the in the in the pro post game.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: I don't even need you to really lean into your players.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: You can you can but you can go into the coaches, you know, you can go into your own performance, say that that was not what the fans expect, and that's not what I expect of me and my staff.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: You need to say stuff like that because we're looking for some reason to believe that you're gonna change.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: We're not we're not that you he kind of gave it the mentality of you know, we're just gonna stay the course.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: You know, this is this is good stuff for one and oh.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, there's not a lot to worry about.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: That's kind of how it felt.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: You know, you know, coach, we we won because they missed a two-point conversion.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Who god knows what would have happened if they converted that.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: We would have lost to any other program.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, any any FPS program, we would have lost this game.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Oh, hey, I we would have had the blow the doors blown off of us.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: I I'm just I'm glad we didn't uh we didn't go like Iowa State and Kansas State.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Who, even though they lost, are I would probably bet them to beat us at this point.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: The Cyclones, the Cyclones and the Wildcats lost to Sunbelt teams, and we somehow played worse.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: That's what I meant.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think we would lose if we uh had to play the cats or the the clones.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: So right now, um we managed to have just as embarrassing of a day, and we didn't even lose.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: I know it's it was it was a bad look for the Big 12 in general.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: Um, it it it really stunk because uh the the teams that are in our ranking, like uh Iowa State and the and Kansas State, kind of in what's I mean, I would say I expected more this year.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, but Kansas State was is kind of in our mystery zone, and they they went and lost, and the clones went and lost.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then you have the the annoying powerhouses of the conference go and blow the doors off of their um there's not to mention not to mention West Virginia and West Virginia.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: They they had a FCS opponent as well, though uh I mean not to give our team a pass, Eastern Kentucky got shut out by 60 by Marshall.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Sure, sure.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: So I mean I the Eastern Kentucky like they keep fighting KFCs.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: Um have you seen their mascot?
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: That's totally Colonel Sanders.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, is he?
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: Totally Colonel Sanders.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: These FCS mascots, I don't know what to do.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: He's they're they're great.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: I like Huskies that he's doing baptism.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: So I I I I'm just embarrassed, and I just wanted to see like we're we're on the coaches right now, and I just wanted to see more fire out of the coaches, and you can already see some it's year two, and you're already starting to see this is like uh and we fired Cliff Kingsbury, you know?
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, and that was that was hot a hot topic on Twitter after the game.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: We fired Cliff Kingsbury after this.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, this this might be a hot take from me, uh, but we I will stand by the Cliff firing until I die.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go down with the ship on that one.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: Cliff Kingsbury is gonna do great stuff in the NFL.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: I honestly believe that.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: I believe he is gonna take that.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: I believe the Cardinals are gonna be like a 10-win team this year in the NFL.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: And that's not just because I have Kyler Murray on my fantasy team.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: It's because Cliff Kingsbury is a great offensive coach.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: And what he didn't do was recruit well.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: He did not recruit well, he didn't spend a damn time on the defense.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: What does he have in the NFL?
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: He's got a GM to do recruiting for him.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: He just has to focus on the team.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, Cliff's gonna do great things for the Cardinals, but he still deserved to get fired at Texas Tech.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: He did.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, people are having short memories with Kingsbury.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: It's a recency bias.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: That's what the man won a what a grand total of one bowls?
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: One bowl.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: And that was Yeah, he won.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: And that was the first year.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: That wasn't his team.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: That was our that was our senior year of high school.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, I we were hyped as heck, you know, going to tech.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: But hey, I'll I'll always root for Cliff.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: But he no doubt he deserved to to be fired when he did.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: Without question.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: And I I I I think people people should not be giving up on Wells this fast.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Uh he the man came in and he's he's dealing with the the aftermath of uh almost a decade of poor seasons.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: Um that that has a lasting effect.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, unless you're just a god of a coach, you can't turn that boat around in a single season.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: So um I want people to keep that in mind because he is he is doing pretty well with recruiting, and he I'm expecting more out of his senior ed tech than Kingsbury still.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: Um I hope, and I think all I can say about this is uh have a short memory for the players, but I hope the coaches remember this.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: You know, this is this this is the kind of stuff that gets you fired.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: And these next these next two weeks better be, I mean, balls to the wall in practice.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: I mean, trying to fix everything, going and looking at this game 40 times and saying, hey, don't do this ever again.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, ever again.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: Because uh, I sure hope Kirby's got Wells on a much shorter, shorter leash, uh, as he should.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: Kirby was a little too liberal on the last coach.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: Um, so if this this season's overall is gonna be a bit of a wash.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: But I mean, if if if if we're not taking bigger steps, if if if we're not throwing the FCS team out of the Jones next season, we're gonna have to start having the conversation again, unfortunately, of if this is if this is the guy on season number three, which is sad.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: But uh, unfortunately, it's Texas Tech football has been in the mud way too long.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: It's getting it's and it's really starting to show on on the program as a whole.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: And um what it's a long season ahead of us.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: We have nine more games left.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: Uh plus whatever they decide to do, bowls, I don't know.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: But uh we have a lot of room for improvement and we have a lot of time to improve.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: So uh there were some positives, despite the whole first part of this podcast.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: There were some positives to take away from this game.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: Uh the running back tandem of Sir Roderick Thompson and Taj Brooks, I I thought was awesome.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: I thought Sir Roderick Thompson looks like he belongs in this league and looks like he's gonna be a top running back in all the Big 12.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: I think uh the running backs, uh the running back situation is the thing we can be the most positive about at this point in time.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: Uh wow, they they pulled their weight.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: They were they were dragging our team all across the field, you know.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: Uh and uh Sir Roger's everything we thought he would be.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: You and I were high on him the whole offseason, and you and I were saying this guy's the dark horse in the Big 12.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: This guy is gonna be a running back because that's gonna shock some people, which is so great uh to have in our uh offensive arsenal because usually obviously we're more of a gunslinging offense, but to have that reliability of that back like a Sarodic Thompson, it's just gonna, it's gonna be do wonders for us.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: Well, and what what I kind of took away from Bowman's press conference, he talked about how we're we wanna, he didn't really talk about this, but it seems like Texas Tech wants to get away from the from the sling it out Mahomes era, the Mike Leach stuff.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: It seems like they want to run down their throats and have these long drives with a lot of plays, you know, these 11 11 plays, 75 yards take up uh, you know, seven minutes of the of the quarter on one drive type of plays.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: And so Roger Thompson is gonna be a huge part of that because that's that's including and and I get it.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: I I like that sort of play because it tires out their defense.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: Um unlike you know Matt Wells talked about this throwing, you know, you we could score in two plays, but then the defense is also only on for two plays, so they're not very tired towards the end of the game.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: I get a little bit of that mentality, um, but yeah, I I I I thought Sir Rodrick uh 112 112 yards and two touchdowns, Taj Brooks had her another touchdown.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: Um, I thought her running back play was super solid.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to watch the transition to uh uh offense that definitely shares the ball with the running back.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: Um, because one one thing I know we uh we need to stop coming back to Cliff, but one one thing that really killed us with Cliff was his time management.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, so I'm really happy to see uh the coaching staff have a a mindset about to keep their mind on the time because that's that's one of the coaches' like most important jobs is to keep track of that clock.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm excited to see this transition and uh we're gonna keep rolling with the positives.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: Man, uh, you know, Alan Bowman, yeah, he he missed those long throws uh that could have really put the game away.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: Um but man, I I think he is probably the guy.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: I think I think he's probably the guy to uh keep keep behind uh keep behind the line for the season.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: Um he he seems like a leader.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: What do you think?
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: He's I'm still a Bowman believer.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: I'm uh I'm not gonna, you know, bash, I'm not gonna say bench him for the other guy after one game.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: He didn't have a bad performance overall.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: He had uh he led all of FPS in passing yards.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: I mean, almost four, I think 430 or 440.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: Um he had two balls, like I said earlier, that he just overthrew.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: Um, but overall he was pretty accurate throughout the whole thing.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: He was getting a lot of different players involved.
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: Uh he he had some dimes in this game and he threw uh he threw some touchdowns.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: So um, and he's got some jets, low-key.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: Like Alan Bowman can can run pretty quick.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: I was not expecting that.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, all the time we're like holding we're like holding our breath every time he goes and runs in the open field, but he took off on a few of those plays.
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: For sure, man.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: And uh that's that's great.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: Uh I mean to have those uh little legs to get you uh to get you moving uh when you need to get that first down.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: It's beautiful to watch.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Um just like go down real quick, please.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: Please fly.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: Please don't try to get it.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: No extra yards, forget about them.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: Just go down, baby.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: Get the first down, go down.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: Don't even get touched.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: Don't even think about it.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: I don't even care if you see a clear path to the end zone.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: For the love of God, please.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: So um, yeah, man.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: I I I I saw some criticism for him on Twitter.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: You know, I people are like talking about uh, you know, maybe if this office is a good click and we gotta we gotta throw in uh Columbia or uh McIver.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: But man, dude, shoot.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: I it's game one.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: Quarterback's one of those positions that really kind of needs to sink in, you know, because he hasn't played in a year, yeah.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: And he's this he's been injured for so long.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: My man is just figuring out that this body's actually healthy, you know.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: Give him a break.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: He's extremely smart.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: You can tell he really knows the game of football.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: And I would be concerned if he was just out here saying, I don't know what happened on that throw, that interception, the defender made a great play.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: No, he knew exactly what happened.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: He threw it too early on the f on the interception, he knew he threw it too early.
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: He and he overthrew some balls.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, he he was between two different types of throws, and he and he kind of he kind of yoinked it a little.
- 34:23SPEAKER_02: But um I I'm I'm excited for Bowman moving forward.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: He seems like a guy that I want at the helm, a guy that I want leading the team.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: I think he's gonna dial it in.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: I'm with you.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: I think in uh I think it's a well-deserved captain.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: I like listening to him in the press conference, and uh he just looks like a leader out there.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: And uh quarterback, that's like half your job.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: You know, it's yeah, being a good being a good player is 50%, but you need to be the the leader.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: You need to be the captain, you know.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: You need to be the most important position in football, man.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: You you you can't just have a guy that can ball out.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: You need a guy that can lead that team.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: Um, and I I think Bowman's the guy.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: Uh I I I think he's gonna be the best quarterback since Pat.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: Um, I may want to knock on wood, but I I'm really seeing it.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so too.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think Bowman's a good guy moving forward.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: Um we were also missing some guys this game.
- 35:18SPEAKER_02: Uh and I Texas Tech just released uh about what an hour and a half ago, we saw on Twitter.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: Um COVID was a cause of some of these guys missing.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: Uh we have six active uh players on the roster that uh that are positive for COVID.
- 35:34SPEAKER_02: So we were missing and some key players.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, talk the Arizona transfer, Colin Schooler, uh, who was named a starter immediately, 10 days into the program.
- 35:45SPEAKER_02: He was a he's been a fantastic player in the Pac-12 and at Arizona.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, he missed Demarcus Fields, I mentioned earlier.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: He missed Zach Adams, a uh an O lineman, Tyree Wilson, the AM transfer, and McClain Mannix, who was a big part of our offense last year.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: Another slot receiver who's who's real quick and and uh Bowman found early in the year.
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: And um we missed some guys, and hopefully they can get over.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: Uh if they tested positive, we wish them the best.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: Um it looks like it looks like Texas Tech has had uh 75 players that have test positive for the virus since they started testing in June.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: Um so we just hope a speedy recovery for these guys and and hopefully we get some negatives in and uh get them on the field.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: I remember uh you and I were talking about that.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: We're uh we were asking where these guys were because whenever you're looking at the depth chart, yeah, uh they were there.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so they popped up, and everybody everybody was confused when they saw Schooler, especially because we were all so excited for him to get on the field.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: Um, but it it looks like it looks like COVID is is the cause for at least the majority of these guys.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: Oh boy, Steven, are you are you getting me and our listeners a little excited again?
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: Am I am I feeling hope again to see if perhaps we're missing these guys to kind of light a spark?
- 36:59SPEAKER_02: Man, is that what we're that's what you come to the talk and tech podcast for?
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: We're all about positivity, even though we just talk negatively for like 30 minutes.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: Hey, we're we're usually pretty positive guys about about all this.
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: It's just um uh I we're I feel like we're just kind of putting into words what everybody's feeling.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, God bless you if you're if you're like uh one game, one-no, we're moving on, we're gonna get the horns.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: Um for sure.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: I high five brother or sister.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Um if if if that's what you're going for.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: I want that, I want, I want what you're having.
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: Um I'll have some of that, please.
- 37:33SPEAKER_01: But we have a lot to figure out before uh the UT game coming uh coming up in Lubbock.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: Um so can I kind of just kind of round it out on uh our team to performance?
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: Okay, it's it's a night game in the Jones, and we only have 11,000 people there because of the uh COVID restrictions.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: How did that affect the game?
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: I think it affected it big time.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: Um I'm not gonna put it as like the main excuse that we played so horrible, but um it's definitely it's definitely something because it seems like our guys thrive off of a a good atmosphere, as would anybody, you know.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: But it always seems like Texas Tech gets hyped.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: You always see former players after their after games in the past saying, y'all were out there at the Jones, you know, we we loved uh we loved the you know noise, the noise level in there.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: Uh we love y'all for coming out and doing all that.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: They really thrive off the crowd, and that stinks that we can't get more people out there.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: Um, even 11,000, we didn't sell out this game, even with our 25% capacity.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, there was only like 18 to 19 capacity, I think, at this game.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I mean I don't know if that could be attributed to just you know straight uh fans wanting to be there.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's just it's game one of a bizarre season and a bizarre situation.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: Um, because you know, you you and I just bought our tickets uh a couple days ago, you know, and so then this game just happened.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: So I I I think it's kind of a weird situation because I bet a lot of people weren't even planning on going to Lubbock, and uh, usually would.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm just gonna strike that up to one weak opponent to uh COVID, you know.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: But obviously we want to have support we can get there.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: And it's gonna be a factor moving forward.
- 39:18SPEAKER_02: It's unfortunate that we have such a good home slate this year, um, because you know, we're gonna have these restrictions.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: But uh, you know, UT's coming to town, OU's coming to town, West Virginia's coming to town.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we're gonna have to uh hopefully the the 25% capacity that is there, uh hopefully they can bring the juice and at least give us some sort of spark um moving forward.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: The game that's circled on the calendar every year is next.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: So I I bet we'll we'll have the the quarter capacity filled up there and hopefully we'll be as loud as we can.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: It's got a good time.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: It's it's uh mid-afternoon, might be a little warm, but uh it beats 11 a.m.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: 2 30.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: I'll take it.
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: We're prime time on Fox, so let's not get embarrassed like we were this past Saturday, and uh let's go you know give the longhorns hell.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: And we'll give you that game preview next week on uh on our pod uh because we do have a bye week and that gives us two weeks to prepare.
- 40:11SPEAKER_02: So that's nice.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: No doubt, man.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: Uh hope hope we can get it together by then.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: And uh I I hope the coaches are up 24-7 figuring this thing out because they got a lot of work to do.
- 40:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, let's get pissed off, Matt Wells.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: Let's yes, you know, let's let's uh let's do the damn thing.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: So uh well that's gonna be that's gonna be it for our uh our our uh recap of Houston Baptist.
- 40:33SPEAKER_02: Um let's not talk about it ever again.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: Well, let's hope we don't have to, man.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: I hope we can uh go into the season going, all right, wow, we really got together, you know.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: So yeah, um, and I that can absolutely happen, you know.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: And we just we just gotta keep the faith.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: It's game one.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: We are one and oh, and we gotta count our blessings at the end of the day.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: We are one and oh, and uh, you know, sometimes you just every program faces a scare.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: And maybe this was ours, you know?
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it's just uh maybe this was the one to get out of the way for a while, um, because no team is invincible to anybody, any any set any given Saturday, right?
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: So uh I hope our Red Raiders uh can make us happy again.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: So let's we can leave it there.
- 41:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, maybe so.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: Um, well, we're gonna move on to our mailbag.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: Uh, we got another question from uh uh Jeremy in Lubbock.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: Uh so he goes, Hey guys, been listening to the pod, and uh want to say you guys do a solid job.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: Appreciate it, Jeremy.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: Um, as a tech student, I am always looking for a better place to study for class.
- 41:31SPEAKER_02: Did y'all have a secret spot on campus that you'd like to go to?
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: I am a uh I'm a business management major, by the way, so any location around the Rawls would be cool.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for the love, Jeremy.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think you're the first student to write in.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: And uh hey, good good degree choice.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: I graduated with the same in 2018 from the Rawls with management.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: Um, so great choice, man.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: Um so I I think you know, being in your position before, uh I I'm ashamed to tell you that my answer is pretty basic.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: Um, the stacks.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: I would go to the library, and uh between the base level and the top level were all these very quiet stacks with uh these study corrals.
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: In the back of each of these uh rooms, you may have been there before, um, they have these study corrals.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: I would just go post up at one of those study corrals with some coffee um and some earbuds and just study my butt off there.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: And a big tip for you since you're in the Rawls is uh I'm sure you already know about this, is pretty much any of the harder classes have free tutoring.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, make sure you take advantage of that if you if you feel like you really need it.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: Um, I was not the best student in tech, Stephen could tell you.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh I I went to I took advantage of that.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: And even if you're a good student and you know you're doing okay, you're gonna struggle every once in a while.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: And if you're going to these tutoring uh sessions, the professors notice.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: And that will ref reflect on um your class and your grade sometimes.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: They can they can help you out with that.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: Um, it shows you're trying.
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: So that's that's my recommendation to you, man.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: Um, unfortunately, in the Jones, I mean not the Jones.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: Hey, you go to the Jones, you go to the Jones.
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: Go to the Jones and study.
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: Hey, do us a favor, Jeremy.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: Go post up in Matt Wells' office.
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: Hey, I'm studying.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: What about you, Matt?
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: I'm just knocking out some accounting.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: I hope you're knocking out some kicking UT's butt, homie.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Um, I and and and the Rawls, uh, there's really not a whole lot of places to study.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can't, you can like rinse out those conference rooms.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: Uh, that's great for team projects or studying, uh, studying together.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: Um, that would be my my recommendations to you, man.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: Uh good luck.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: I know those classes aren't easy.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: I definitely struggled with them.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: So uh, but uh obviously you're a smart enough kid.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: So get it.
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: We were not the best students.
- 43:53SPEAKER_02: Uh I can say that right now.
- 43:55SPEAKER_02: Um, but I did I did enjoy studying uh top floor of the library.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Uh getting up there, it's always the quietest.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, I'd post up there on the days that I've been putting off studying and had to knock out a crap ton of homework.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, I would post up there for, you know, hours at a time, enough uh food spots on campus to go grab a quick lunch and then uh just you know keep it going.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: Also, I was a journalism major, so I had a lot of video projects that I had to do uh towards junior senior year.
- 44:25SPEAKER_02: Um the I'm not sure it's like the left side, like when you go up on the library elevator, you can get off not on the not on the normal side, but on the other side.
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: I believe it's the second floor and it's a computer lab.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: And uh editing over there was real nice.
- 44:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was a it was a smaller room, uh, it could fit maybe 15, 20 people each at the monitor, and you're just knocking out your project.
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: Uh for me, that was probably it uh on campus.
- 44:51SPEAKER_02: Because I couldn't I couldn't study at home.
- 44:52SPEAKER_02: I I I don't I don't know any person in the right mind that can study at their house.
- 44:56SPEAKER_02: Just doesn't work for me.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you and you and me both, because like you and I were each other's like worst nightmare, you know.
- 45:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, and we I have a test, I have a test tomorrow.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, you want a keystone?
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sure.
- 45:07SPEAKER_02: We were we were idiots.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: So if we really need it.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: If we really hey we made it, baby.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: We made it, baby.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: Four years too, baby.
- 45:14SPEAKER_02: Four years, baby.
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, no, we weren't uh we weren't the best examples, but we did get our stuff done when we needed to.
- 45:23SPEAKER_02: Um go on go to the library, go on campus, go get.
- 45:26SPEAKER_02: I actually studied better when I had uh uh other people too.
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: I like uh our friend Leslie kicked my butt in some of these like media law.
- 45:35SPEAKER_02: She was the reason I passed it.
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: So shout out to Leslie uh because there's no way in hell I would have gotten higher than maybe a C in that class and one for her.
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, I I like studying with groups of people because uh you know, and and and some people aren't good to study with because they just you know mess around the whole time.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: But uh get a good group of people, a solid group of uh of kids that you just know are gonna uh work hard at least for an hour or two.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but be be friends with people that are smarter than you.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: We we we took advantage of that for sure.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 46:10SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, man, we appreciate the question.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, thank you, Jeremy, and thank you for the love, man.
- 46:14SPEAKER_01: And uh good luck getting through those classes.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: Uh sorry you have to be on on uh such an awesome campus during such a weird time.
- 46:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: But uh y'all can also send us a mailback question, uh, talking techpod at gmail.com and uh we'll get them to them here at the end of podcasts.
- 46:29SPEAKER_02: Literally anything, literally anything, guys.
- 46:32SPEAKER_02: I mean Texas Tech, uh you know, campus living, opinions, opinions, hot takes, whatever you got for us.
- 46:39SPEAKER_02: We'll talk about it.
- 46:41SPEAKER_02: So um Tristan, why don't we maneuver into uh your song of the week?
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: All right, man.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: Uh so I have a fun one for the song of the week.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm gonna I'm gonna talk about a guy who is a proud red raider.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: He's one of the most famous uh Texas singer, uh songwriters in the in the in the genre.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: Uh that is Wade Bowen.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: I'm sure many of our listeners will be familiar with him.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: Uh, if you if you're into the Texas country scene, uh he's a red raider.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: He got his career started at uh Texas Tech.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: He was playing at the blue light.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: That's where his career took off, and the rest is history.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: He's one of the biggest in the in the industry now, uh in the genre, I should say.
- 47:16SPEAKER_01: Um so what's really fun is you and I both agree on this, is I really like covers.
- 47:22SPEAKER_01: I think covers are so fun, especially when they cross genres.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: So, what I what I want to present to y'all off of Wade Bowen's new EP is a Phil Collins song.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: Whoa.
- 47:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a Phil Collins song called I Wish It Would Rain Down.
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: And it's uh it's actually a well-written song, you know.
- 47:41SPEAKER_01: Uh Phil Collins, he's he's he's kind of like a music mad scientist with his sounds and his and his and his lyrics, you know, he throws a lot together and it just works.
- 47:49SPEAKER_02: He's got a funky, he's got a funky voice too.
- 47:52SPEAKER_01: He does and he's got a funky way in general, you know.
- 47:55SPEAKER_01: And I like it too.
- 47:55SPEAKER_01: He's got a lot of energy in his music.
- 47:57SPEAKER_01: Um, and this song is no exception.
- 47:59SPEAKER_01: And it's actually well written.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it's it's it's a very classic heartbreak song, you know.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: Uh that moment in a and uh breakup when the the girl leaves you and you realize that it it was your fault, and that, you know, whenever you're sad, you kind of wish the weather reflected that.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: So it's a it's kind of got that vibe going for it, and it's it's a great song, and it's just such a cool genre bending song that Wade Bowen uh takes it with.
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: He does Phil Collins really well.
- 48:24SPEAKER_01: It's such a cool um country, uh I don't know even know what to call Phil Collins genre.
- 48:32SPEAKER_01: Um pop experimental mix, I would say.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: So it's such a cool bend.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: You know, so I would I would recommend the listeners give it that listen.
- 48:42SPEAKER_01: And uh, if you don't mind, I just also want to throw in one more off this awesome AP called The Waiting.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: Um one of his first songs ever go big is called Um Who I Am.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: Um and that's that's his first love song that went big.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: He says one of the second or third songs he ever wrote, and he wrote it while he was a student at tech.
- 48:59SPEAKER_01: Um and he he before it was just a live version from The Blue Light, and now he has a studio version on that uh album as well.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: But my song of the week still stands at I Wish It Would Rain Down.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: Wade Bowen.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: I I love West Texas Rain.
- 49:24SPEAKER_02: Uh uh, I wasn't I I for some reason I wasn't a big Wade Bowen fan when I was originally introduced to him, but he's he's grown on me for sure.
- 49:32SPEAKER_02: And he's got some jams and Texas Tech guy, gotta love it.
- 49:36SPEAKER_02: Um my song of the week is uh Pain by Three Days Grace.
- 49:40SPEAKER_02: No, I'm just kidding.
- 49:42SPEAKER_02: Pain! No, uh Pain is what I felt during the football game, but that is not my song of the week.
- 49:49SPEAKER_02: I am taking you back to the 1970s with my song of the week.
- 49:53SPEAKER_02: It is listen to the music by the Doobie Brothers.
- 49:57SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, man, it's just a jam.
- 50:00SPEAKER_02: Funky, funky jam.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 50:02SPEAKER_02: Uh it's it's positive.
- 50:04SPEAKER_02: It's so positive.
- 50:05SPEAKER_02: After watching that game on Saturday, I needed to pick me up, and it seemed like the tech players needed one as well.
- 50:12SPEAKER_02: They need to listen to some Doobie Brothers.
- 50:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, the song, it's so uplifting, reminds us that a positive mindset can go a long way in life.
- 50:19SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's a classic, uh, turn that frown upside down kind of jam.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, just a good overall song.
- 50:26SPEAKER_02: Love the doobie brothers.
- 50:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, if you don't, if you don't know of them, uh, you need to.
- 50:49SPEAKER_01: Great pick because my song reflected how we felt uh last Saturday.
- 50:55SPEAKER_02: I was so convinced I was gonna do pain by three days.
- 51:00SPEAKER_02: But no, I I wanted to be positive uh because we're going into UT and we're going to pull it out somehow.
- 51:06SPEAKER_01: Heck yeah, we are, baby.
- 51:08SPEAKER_01: We uh last time we beat UT was uh 2018.
- 51:12SPEAKER_01: We're gonna be kind of in uh I'm sorry, 2008.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, in the Jones.
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: Uh oh, that's the last time in the Jones?
- 51:18SPEAKER_01: The last time we beat uh UT was uh 2008 in the Jones, crab treat catch.
- 51:22SPEAKER_01: Uh kind of we're kind of walking to a similar situation.
- 51:25SPEAKER_01: Uh they're gonna be they're ranked top 15 at the moment.
- 51:28SPEAKER_02: Um we're not going into a similar situation.
- 51:33SPEAKER_02: We're not doing that.
- 51:34SPEAKER_02: We're not ranked number seven in the nation.
- 51:37SPEAKER_01: Hey, hey, this is my positive monologue, not yours.
- 51:42SPEAKER_01: But yeah, you're totally right.
- 51:44SPEAKER_01: This is not the same thing.
- 51:46SPEAKER_02: Different situation.
- 51:47SPEAKER_02: Then we're both gonna come out with dubs.
- 51:49SPEAKER_01: New legacy, baby.
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: That's all I'm saying.
- 51:52SPEAKER_01: Positivity, positivity, doobie brothers.
- 51:55SPEAKER_02: Doobie brothers, baby.
- 51:56SPEAKER_02: Listen to the music.
- 51:58SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, man, I think that's gonna do it.
- 52:01SPEAKER_02: I think that's gonna do it.
- 52:02SPEAKER_02: Um you can follow both of us on Twitter.
- 52:05SPEAKER_02: Tristan is at Tristy Mick.

- 52:45SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 52:46SPEAKER_00: Always wreck them tech.
- 52:48SPEAKER_01: Wreck them tech.
- 52:49SPEAKER_00: Uh wow, first of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 52:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just want to congratulate Steven and Tristan on another great podcast.
- 53:03SPEAKER_00: They were everything we thought they would be.
- 53:05SPEAKER_00: Um, we have a lot of respect for their program.
- 53:07SPEAKER_00: We have such a high opinion of them, and want to congratulate them.
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: I just want to tell Stephen and Tristan thanks for coming out.
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 53:17SPEAKER_00: You know, we fed off of it.
- 53:19SPEAKER_00: I think it goes back and forth, but tremendous.
- 53:21SPEAKER_00: Uh great job, and um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
