- 0:00Speaker 1: Speaking of a hit. This Jerry Jones conversation apparently has
- 0:05turned out to be quite the topic of the conversation.
- 0:08He brought it up at the start of the program,
- 0:10cam about the local newscast playing Jerry's sounding off on
- 0:17his radio hosts there on one oh five to three
- 0:19the Fan, and you asked the question after Jerry said,
- 0:24and the quote, this is not your job. Your job
- 0:27isn't to let me go over all the reasons that
- 0:29I did something that I'm sorry that I did it.
- 0:31That's not your job. I'll get somebody ouse to answer
- 0:34these questions. Well, then later, as you pointed out, he
- 0:36said to Diana Rassini the Athletic, if I'm going to
- 0:39be grilled, I don't need it to be by the
- 0:40guys I'm paying. So it kind of all had us
- 0:45quizzically thinking about all this kind of stuff. And I've
- 0:47reasoned that maybe what he's talking about is them buying
- 0:50the airtime. I want to fight through the fan, and
- 0:51that was part of the deal. Mike Doosey is longtime
- 0:54sports anchor in the Dallas Forward Benterplex on the Fox affiliate,
- 0:58and last night, in the commentary on his show, he
- 1:03said this quote. The fan hosts were asking those questions
- 1:08in a much more courteous way than cowboy fans would
- 1:11be asking if they ever had a chance to sit
- 1:13down one on one with you, saying this to Jerry
- 1:16and let you know what they really think about the
- 1:19way you've put this roster together. Deucy went on to say, Now,
- 1:23this is very similar to the things I said yesterday, Cam,
- 1:25if you remember, Deucy went on to say, he has admired.
- 1:28I didn't say admire, but he has admired the way
- 1:31Jerry usually takes criticism in a good natured way. I
- 1:35did say that yesterday, but that this was different.
- 1:38Speaker 2: That's what I said.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I got a different vibe out of him out about
- 1:41that quote. This little display this morning, that was ugly.
- 1:45That was a billionaire bully pod because he wasn't hearing
- 1:48exactly what he wanted to hear. Jerry, don't blame the messengers.
- 1:52Point the finger of blame at those who deserve it,
- 1:54your players, your coaches, and yourself. That's where that reach.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Brother.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yeah, so said that about there. Now, whether Jerry really
- 2:05pays any attention to it, probably not. But anyway, let's
- 2:09hear from long worns head coach Steve Circasian Stark on
- 2:12the SEC teleconference this morning with some comments. First of all,
- 2:16his opening thoughts in this SEC teleconference conference call, It's
- 2:21a great data.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Bill, obviously a great opportunity for us this week, getting
- 2:27ready to play a marquee game Gains University at Georgia,
- 2:31a program that we really feel like has set the
- 2:34standard in college football here over the past you know, shoot,
- 2:38almost a decade now, I mean, Coach Smart's done a
- 2:41great job.
- 2:43Speaker 2: We know it's gonna be a heck of a challenge.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Should be a great environment here at DKR and looking
- 2:47forward to the opportunity.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Okay, all right. Then he was asked what allowed his
- 2:53program to be so well prepared for this transition into
- 2:58the SEC because we've been here two you know, Ssex
- 3:00he's different. They're going to find out it's gonna be different.
- 3:03Blah blah blah. And here they are rolling along right now,
- 3:06not only sitting on top of the SEC, but on
- 3:09top of the national polls right now.
- 3:10Speaker 2: So it was asked what.
- 3:11Speaker 1: It's allowed his program to be so well prepared for
- 3:14this transition into the Southeastern Conference.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Well, you know, when we took the job, here, you know,
- 3:23four years ago, really looked at hey, why are we
- 3:26taking the job. And you don't come to Texas just
- 3:29to be a head coach. You come to Texas to
- 3:32compete for championships. And we felt like, okay, if we
- 3:36want to try to win a national championship in the
- 3:38old model somewhere there, you were going to have to
- 3:42beat Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, maybe Notre Dame. Those
- 3:46were kind of the four teams that were kind of
- 3:49rotating the college Football Playoff, and so to do that was, Okay,
- 3:53what type of team do we need to have to
- 3:55make that happen? And we felt like we got to
- 3:58get bigger up front at the line of scrim jump
- 4:00both sides of the ball, and we need to get
- 4:02faster on the perimeter, and that that's what it was
- 4:05going to take to beat those teams in the playoff.
- 4:08And then so when we got notified that we were
- 4:11going to the SEC, that that formula for building the
- 4:15team really didn't have to change at that point because
- 4:20you know, we had already been building the team that
- 4:22way to try to beat the best teams out of
- 4:23the SEC. And so to make that happen, and we
- 4:30felt like we got to get bigger up front at
- 4:32the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball,
- 4:35and we need to get faster on the perimeter, and
- 4:37that that's what it was going to take to beat
- 4:40those teams in the playoff. And then so when we
- 4:43got notified that we were going to the SEC, that
- 4:46that formula for building the team really didn't have to
- 4:49change at that point because we had already been building
- 4:54the team that way to try to beat the best
- 4:56teams out of the SEC. And so it just kind
- 4:59of re affirmed what we're what we were doing needed.
- 5:02Speaker 1: To be done.
- 5:02Speaker 2: And so that's been the process, you know, along with
- 5:06I think, you know, building our culture. You know, it's
- 5:08one thing to have really talented players or big, big people,
- 5:11but I think, you know, I've said this all along.
- 5:13I think I think culture beats talent, and that was
- 5:17something we had to hang.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Our hat on early while we were here.
- 5:20Speaker 2: But I think culture and talent together is really dangerous,
- 5:23and I think that that's that's kind of what we've
- 5:26become as a program now now.
- 5:28Speaker 1: At the time, sure that the word came down that
- 5:31he was going that that Texas was going to go
- 5:34into the Southeastern Conference. Georgia was sitting on top of
- 5:37the college football world as the national champions. So Sark
- 5:41was asked at that time was he trying to mirror
- 5:45what his friend Kirby Smart had built and was doing
- 5:48at Georgia as Sark was building his program.
- 5:52Speaker 2: I don't know the ins and outs the inner workings
- 5:54of of Georgia. I mean, clearly, you know, Kirby has
- 5:56done a tremendous job. You know what what they've been
- 5:59able to dude from a consistency standpoint, the number of wins,
- 6:04the championship appearances in the SEC Championship, the national championship appearances,
- 6:08the back to back national titles. You know that that
- 6:13level of consistency doesn't happen by chance. You know, he's
- 6:15recruited really good players, he does a heck of a
- 6:18job coaching. He's had coaches come and go, He's you know,
- 6:21he's brought in new coaches that have done a really
- 6:24good job. And so you know, they're obviously ahead of
- 6:28the curve of where we are from where they where
- 6:30they started and where we are today. But again, I
- 6:34think a lot of the stuff is, you know, Kirby
- 6:36and I's backgrounds with Coach Saban, and you know, if
- 6:39you you're at Alabama, whether it's for a short time
- 6:42or a long time, there's a lot of lessons to
- 6:45be learned. Not everybody's going to be Nick Saban, but
- 6:49there's a lot of lessons to be learned, and there's
- 6:51a there's some method to the madness of of how
- 6:53he goes about his business. And I think we both
- 6:56probably took some some pretty good notes of trying to
- 6:59build a build a program and an organization that could
- 7:02be sustainable and not just one year have a really
- 7:05good year and then be down for a couple but
- 7:07be sustainable to where you're competitive and your compete for
- 7:11championships year in and year out.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Okay, and he has pointed us out. We mentioned it earlier,
- 7:17he said at the news conference on Monday. Kirby Smart
- 7:20said it in his news conference on Monday that the
- 7:23two are good friends and that they get together as
- 7:26part of a coach's retreat thing at the end of
- 7:28air year, so they know each other. Of course, obviously
- 7:29they've both been former assistants under Nick Saban, so they
- 7:33are friends. So he was asked a captain obvious question
- 7:38what makes Sark and Kirby Smart such good friends.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Well, we're both average golfers. I don't know. I honestly,
- 7:49I really think it's more of a personality connection than
- 7:53it is just you know, hey we like this or
- 7:56like that. You know, we both played, you know, we
- 7:59then we both got you know, weren't good enough to
- 8:01kind of have real careers professionally, and we both started
- 8:04coaching when we were young. And you know, we both
- 8:10have sons at play and both work for coach Saban,
- 8:13and so there's just kind of and then I think,
- 8:15like you said, there's a personality trade that that makes sense.
- 8:18You know, we're both highly competitive, but yet we like
- 8:21to have fun. We both can joke, we can have
- 8:23a good time, and and so again, I don't know
- 8:26if it's like just specifically that hey, you know, we
- 8:30both like you know, the specific color or something. We
- 8:32just I just think we get along and that sometimes
- 8:35is the best kind of friendship to have.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Okay, So we're gonna hear more from Sark coming up
- 8:43the next segment. He's got a few more things to
- 8:45uh to say about this this matchup, so we'll we'll
- 8:48get to that coming up. And also remind you that
- 8:54Long Worn Weekly with Coach Sark is coming up ninety
- 8:58minutes from now the show taping, So if you wanted
- 9:01to come out the Pluckers and a lot of people

- 9:16It's at twenty two twenty two Rio Grand and there's
- 9:18a parking I know it's a kind of a congested
- 9:21area over there West Campus, but if you go up
- 9:23Rio Grand, or come down twenty third and go up
- 9:28or twenty first and then go up a Rio Grand
- 9:30from there, there's a parking garage there that you can access.
- 9:34Just pass Pluckers coming going north on the street. What's

- 9:46going to record the show tonight at six and then
- 9:48it'll air tomorrow night at seven. Also, you can see
