Transcript
- 0:15Speaker 1: Pushkin.
- 0:20Speaker 2: This episode is sponsored by Cadillac.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Okay, what we got is we got one of these
- 0:25Speaker 1: massive wheelies, the kind that is like three exercise of
- 0:29Speaker 1: the one you put in overhead.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Definitely can't.
- 0:31Speaker 4: You can't carry this on.
- 0:32Speaker 1: You can't carry that. We've got two standard sized wheelies.
- 0:37Speaker 1: We got a car seat, car seat bottom. We got
- 0:41Speaker 1: a stroller, We've got two backpacks.
- 0:43Speaker 4: Whole bunch of audio recording, a.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Bunch of audio equipment. This is just warming up. Now,
- 0:48Speaker 1: we're not putting down the rear seats. I'm in New
- 0:52Speaker 1: York's Hudson Valley with my producers, Jacob and Joey, who
- 0:55Speaker 1: are helping me load the trunk of an suv with
- 0:58Speaker 1: all the luggage, car seats, and kid gear i can find.
- 1:02Speaker 1: We're calling this the helicopter parent test in the standard
- 1:07Speaker 1: helicopter twenty first century year. This is what an over
- 1:11Speaker 1: involved set of parents would take on a weekend daccation
- 1:15Speaker 1: and maybe a day trip, although you know, realistically you
- 1:18Speaker 1: could last for several weeks with abound stuff. We got
- 1:20Speaker 1: here not long before this day. Upstate, we got a
- 1:25Speaker 1: call a Pushkin HQ an offer to preview the brand
- 1:29Speaker 1: new all electric SUV that comes on the market next year,
- 1:33Speaker 1: the lead model in GM's pivot to electrification. I'm Malcolm Glabelle,
- 1:41Speaker 1: and you're listening to the second of two very special
- 1:43Speaker 1: episodes for Revision as History. Listeners join me and a
- 1:46Speaker 1: few friends as we embark on an all electric road trip.
- 1:54Speaker 1: The helicopter parent test was the start of our day.
- 1:57Speaker 1: In the Cadillac lyric, We've been favored by one of
- 2:00Speaker 1: those epically beautiful fall days, leaves turning sun glinting, a cool,
- 2:05Speaker 1: hushed breeze, sliding over the mountains, putting the lyric through
- 2:09Speaker 1: its paces. Ended overwhelmingly past the first test. This STUV
- 2:14Speaker 1: is cavernous enough to comfortably hold kids, parents, maybe even grandparents,
- 2:21Speaker 1: plus all the gear necessary for an obsessive twenty first
- 2:25Speaker 1: century parent like me to keep their kid happy for
- 2:28Speaker 1: at least a day. Even Cadillac's Chief marketing Officer, Melissa
- 2:32Speaker 1: Grady can relate to driving a jam packed vehicle, which
- 2:36Speaker 1: is where the rear camera mirror really comes in handy.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I'm a balloon person, so if I'm going to a party,
- 2:42Speaker 3: I'll have a lot of balloons in the back of
- 2:44Speaker 3: my car. Or if you are transporting I've done a
- 2:47Speaker 3: lot of remodeling lately, so when you're transporting a lot
- 2:51Speaker 3: of goods in the back of your vehicle or tile,
- 2:54Speaker 3: that camera.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Just really works to help see what's behind you. And
- 2:59Speaker 2: you mentioned the map as well.
- 3:01Speaker 3: That map is just it's great. Not only does it
- 3:05Speaker 3: have all the full navigation functionality, but it's very easy
- 3:09Speaker 3: to plot out your route and put the charging stations in.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Next up, a delicate bit of driving involving my daughter
- 3:19Speaker 1: at a high stakes moment in every toddler's day, nap time. Speedy.
- 3:24Speaker 1: We strapped her into a car seat to find out
- 3:27Speaker 1: if the Lyrics was quite enough to put her to sleep. Speedy, Okay, Okay, clearly,
- 3:41Speaker 1: this is a hugely demanding test speed. It's okay, it's okay.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I think we should drive. She's gonna be fine. I
- 3:53Speaker 1: think she just once she's she's getting a little used
- 3:57Speaker 1: to speeding this new experience you're in a car. Tears
- 4:02Speaker 1: is not the appropriate response to being in a luxury automobile. So, hush, baby,
- 4:10Speaker 1: don't get cars. Sick, Daddy's gonna buy you a Cadillac Lyric. Okay, one, two, three, Hush.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Little baby, don't get car. Sick, Daddy's gonna buy you
- 4:26Speaker 4: Cadillac lyric speeding, Do you have anything to say?
- 4:30Speaker 1: I think she's fall asleep. I sense the I sense
- 4:34Speaker 1: the quietude that pretends a deep and dreamless sleep. We
- 4:42Speaker 1: tuck Speedy back to her crip and set out once
- 4:46Speaker 1: more over to my friend Dan's place. He owns the
- 4:50Speaker 1: storage and maintenance garage where every serious gearhead in the
- 4:54Speaker 1: area keeps their pride and joy the car too nice
- 4:57Speaker 1: and too precious to keep it home, such as Dan's
- 5:01Speaker 1: immaculate vintage Cadillac.
- 5:05Speaker 5: This is a nineteen sixty three coup de Ville. This
- 5:08Speaker 5: has forty one thousand original miles. Yeah, original interior. It's
- 5:14Speaker 5: suited with a three to ninety cubic eng engine so
- 5:17Speaker 5: they all had in sixty three. This is Basildian green paint,
- 5:23Speaker 5: and of course the correct one inch white wall, or
- 5:25Speaker 5: else you get in big trouble with the Cadillac community
- 5:28Speaker 5: if you don't have the right white wall. Yeah.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Time for what we call the heritage test. Can the
- 5:34Speaker 1: lyric win over a diehard Caddy enthusiast who thinks the
- 5:38Speaker 1: last fifty years have all been downhill for the automobile business.
- 5:42Speaker 1: We lined up Dan's old school Caddy in a parking
- 5:44Speaker 1: lot next to our lyric. Modernist meet postmodernist. It's funny
- 5:50Speaker 1: how much this kind of linear dash of the lyric
- 5:53Speaker 1: still kind of quotes the classic short Cadillac dash.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Yeah jewelry like in a way.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, it's really surprisingly similar. Our idea
- 6:04Speaker 1: was to run a classic experiment control versus treatment condition
- 6:09Speaker 1: cars run in succession over exactly the same route we
- 6:13Speaker 1: started in Dan's classic Kupe Deville.
- 6:19Speaker 5: I've got the caddy bug right.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Now, as they say, and what is it you love about?
- 6:26Speaker 5: It's like putting on a like a tailored suit. The
- 6:31Speaker 5: smoothness of this car for nineteen sixty three or any
- 6:34Speaker 5: of the Cadillacs of that error are just you know,
- 6:39Speaker 5: above the rest, I believe. Yeah, it really takes you
- 6:43Speaker 5: back in time driving this car.
- 6:47Speaker 1: This thing like it feels like we're gliding down the
- 6:51Speaker 1: road in some giant.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Ocean liner exactly. And this is you know, this is
- 6:54Speaker 5: how people traveled back then. You know, they got four
- 6:58Speaker 5: or five people in the car with the big trunk
- 7:00Speaker 5: and the suitcases in the back, and you know, taking
- 7:03Speaker 5: a two hour trip to say, you know, from the
- 7:06Speaker 5: city to the Adirondacks, and that was that was the
- 7:09Speaker 5: big trip of the summer.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Then we get back and we turned it down and say,
- 7:15Speaker 1: all right, now we drive the same route, only this
- 7:18Speaker 1: time in the lyric. He's a bit skeptical at first.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Dan needs gasoling around to feel happy.
- 7:25Speaker 5: So always bizarre to get into a car and not
- 7:28Speaker 5: hear an engine. But there is a nice sing if
- 7:33Speaker 5: you will to this car.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Could you see what I'm saying? Like how conceptually it's
- 7:39Speaker 1: it's a modern version of the exact experience we just.
- 7:43Speaker 5: It has that feel of, you know, putting that tailored
- 7:45Speaker 5: suit on. It's got that you know, It's just Cadillacs
- 7:49Speaker 5: always have this I don't know, this extra excellence feel
- 7:54Speaker 5: when you're driving it, just you know, it has this unrough,
- 7:57Speaker 5: floating feel.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm unhurry, We're all going to be fine, right,
- 8:05Speaker 1: That's okay.
- 8:08Speaker 5: It doesn't, it doesn't. I'm in, I'm in the car.
- 8:11Speaker 5: That's great.
- 8:14Speaker 1: With Dan gushing over the look of our lyric, I'm
- 8:17Speaker 1: reminded of something Melissa Grady mentioned in our chat earlier.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the design is so much better at
- 8:25Speaker 2: articulating this than I am. But there are definitely cues
- 8:31Speaker 2: taken from the past. Really, you know a lot of
- 8:33Speaker 2: the interior detailing that this book nature using all the
- 8:37Speaker 2: best materials. So I think when we look at returning
- 8:41Speaker 2: Cadillac to honestly like the standard of the world, you'll
- 8:46Speaker 2: see that as you as you look at the older catalacts.
- 8:49Speaker 1: What's next? What Cadillac can we what can we expect
- 8:52Speaker 1: from Cadillac.
- 8:53Speaker 2: So I can't give you details, but I can tell
- 8:56Speaker 2: you next year is going to be very exciting for Cadillac,
- 9:01Speaker 2: and exciting on more than one front.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So come on, you can't even give a say, come on, listen,
- 9:06Speaker 1: just a hint, come on, just a hint. Well, that's
- 9:10Speaker 1: enough fun for the day. Time to head home to
- 9:12Speaker 1: the family. And in case you're wondering, my daughter back home,
- 9:16Speaker 1: fast asleep, h.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Little baby, don't guitar sick dad, He's gonna buy you
- 9:23Speaker 4: Cadillac lyric Is.
