Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody, welcome back to the Graham Walk and Lane podcast where I get to hang out with my friends and talk about characters that are often overlooked and need a little more attention.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_01]: And we're going to delve into the ridiculous world of the walrus today.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_01]: This guy, there's some, okay, welcome to welcome my friends Christian Smith and Minolas van Voodis back to the show to talk to me about this one recording with me from across the pond.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_01]: Both of them are queer with big bushy beards and I should have put a beard on today.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: My first question as you guys introduce yourselves, have you ever seen a walrus in real life?
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: And what are your initial thoughts on walrus's, the animals, not walrus, the character?
- 0:41[SPEAKER_02]: I was actually thinking about, I thought I actually think I have seen a walrus in real life.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_02]: But they are all kind of awesome, they just, yeah, the kind of stuff I think I've got to say lines in San Francisco.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they're the kind of awesome.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_04]: Hello glad to be back.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_04]: I don't think I've seen one.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_04]: I will then know the difference between this and the sea lion either I mean, they look like they're enjoying life going at their own pace.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_01]: I admire the slothness that they exude I was recently in San Francisco with my husband and our youngest kid and There's a dog there where like the sea lions and seals will just like hang out and they you know We're watching them like map on each other in giant piles and they're like
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: kind of cute, but really smelly and they're super noisy when they want to be.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen walruses at a couple of zoos or exhibits, but I remember watching one of the like planet earth episodes a couple of years ago where you know David Attenborough was doing his his British like old man voice and he's talking about like earroading habitats and like how walruses like to climb up on these shores in order to stay safe.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: But now they're like a roting away and so these walruses
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: They don't know how to climb back down so they just like fall like several stories back to the ground below and like summer dying and there's all these ridiculous images of like walrus is falling off this cliff, and it's not supposed to be funny.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_04]: If you put in like the proper music truck over if you can.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, even then.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: I wanted to put like an envious soundtrack, like, who may know the wind's blood.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: They're just following, you know, viruses are large marine animals.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: A native primarily to the Arctic Ocean in the surrounding seas.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: They're known for their long tusks.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: They're thick whiskers, which are called Vibrisai, by the way.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_01]: And they're enormous body size.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: Mayals sometimes can weigh over 3,000 pounds.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_01]: Their tusks are long elongated canine teeth that are used for defense.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: social dominance and they even use those two pull themselves up onto sea ice like the grip with their tusks and yank their thousand pound bodies up onto the ice.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: Wallace's freed primarily on clams and other bottom-dwelling shellfish using their sensitive whiskers to detect
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: prey on the ocean floor, they are highly social animals they gather in large groups on ice flows or coastal beaches where they're loud vocalizations and massive presence make them one of the most distinctive animals of the area.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_01]: What do you
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: We think of walruses and how those abilities transfer over to our character today, a human partner, which will get into his whole thing shortly, but just the power and the bulk of him.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_04]: Early uses any of all resulated abilities, thus he only bites a person once in a lot of his appearances.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_04]: I would love to see him use his tasks more, I think that would be awesome.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe even so, so him climbing up with his tasks, I like the aim of creating my mind with him climbing on top of the iceberg that would look cool.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_02]: I had no idea that they'd use the teeth for that, or the whiskers was so sensitive, or anything.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_02]: Those are kind of cool powers.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_02]: With the right character, that could be kind of an awesome, awesome design.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, we're going to do some setup on this character before we get there.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: This character is ridiculous, but if you guys have been listening to these gimmick villains story, like we've gotten quite serious, because there's a lot to talk about here.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_01]: I have three openers I want to give before we launch into his history.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: This first one's going to take a minute, but it's worth the journey, so everybody just sit with me for a moment.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to read you the walrus in the carpenter by Lewis Carroll.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: Now, Darrell Lawrence, my friend out there, if you're listening, we both watched this TV show growing up.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_01]: There was an Alice in Wonderland, two-hour TV special that ran multiple nights.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's four hours long total.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: where a bunch of celebrities did like a long version of Alice in Wonderland that has like musical numbers and tap dancing.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: Sammy Davis Jr. is in it.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: Carol Channing is in it.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: Ringo Star is in it.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: There's all these clips you can find them on YouTube of all of these characters acting like their dressed in suits and doing these things.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: I've watched it as an adult and it's kind of horrifying.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: and in it, the walrus and the carpenter, which is a Lewis Carroll poem, it's wild.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: Also, do you remember the Disney movie where Alice comes across the walrus and the carpenter eating all the little oyster children?
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, truly, truly wild journey.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: These are terrifying, but let me read you this incredible poem.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: Again, a little bit long, but worth the journey.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_01]: The sun was shining on the sea, shining with all his might.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: He did his very best to make the billows smooth and bright.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: And this was odd because it was the middle of the night.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: The moon was shining so clearly because she thought the sun had got no business to be there after the day was done.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's very rude of him, she said, to come and spoil the fun.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: The sea was wet as wet could be.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: The sands were dry as dry.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_01]: You could not see a cloud because no cloud was in the sky.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: No birds were flying overhead, there were no birds to fly.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: The walrus and the carpenter were walking close at hand.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: They wept like anything to see such quantities of sand.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: If this were only cleared away, they said it would be grand.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_01]: If seven maids with seven mobs swept it for half a year, they used to pose the walrus said that they could get it clear.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: I doubt it said the carpenter and shed a bitter tear.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: All oysters come and walk with us, the walrus did besiege, a pleasant walk, a pleasant talk along the briny beach.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: We cannot do with more than four to give a hand to each.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_01]: The eldest oyster looked at him, but never a word he said.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: The eldest oyster winged his eye and shook his heavy head, meaning to say he did not choose to leave the oyster bed.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: But for young oysters, hurried up, all eager for the treat.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: Their coats were brushed, their faces washed, their shoes were clean and neat.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: And this was odd because, you know, they hadn't any feet.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_01]: and yet another four, and thick and fast they came at last and more and more and more, all hopping through the frothy waves and scrambling to the shore, the walrus in the carpenter walked on a mile or so, and then they rested on a rock conveniently low.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: And all the little oyster stood and waited in a row.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: The time has come, the walrus said, to talk of many things, of shoes and ships and ceiling wax, of cabbages and kings, and why the sea is boiling hot, and whether pigs have wings.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_01]: But wait a bit the oysters cried before we have our chat for some of us are out of breath and all of us are fat No hurry said the carpenter.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: They thanked him much for that a loaf of bread the walrus said is what we chiefly need Pepper and vinegar besides are very good indeed now if you
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: If you're ready, oysters dear, we can begin to feed.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: But not on us, the oysters cried, turning a little blue.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: After such kindness, that would be a dismal thing to do.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: The night is fine, the walrus said, do you admire the view?
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: It was so kind of you to calm and you were very nice.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: The carpenter said nothing, but cut us another slice.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_01]: I wish you were not quite so deaf, I've had to ask you twice.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: It seems to shame the wall resed to play them such a trick.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_01]: After we brought them out so far and made them trot so quick, the carpenter said nothing, but the butter spreads too thick.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: I weaver you, the wall resed, I deeply sympathize with sobs and tears he sorted out those of the largest size, holding his pocket handkerchief before his streaming eyes.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, Oyster said the carpenter, you've had a pleasant run, shall we be trotting home again?
- 7:56[SPEAKER_02]: because they'd eaten everyone, horror story, I'm aware of it, I just never actually heard it the way through it.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's horror story.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_01]: Do you remember it from the Alice in Wonderland cartoon?
- 8:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_02]: A little bit.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_02]: A long time since I've seen it, but yeah, I remember the
- 8:15[SPEAKER_04]: As soon as you started reading, it started coming back to me, first the aim of the walrus.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_04]: And I think the walrus was a sexual awakening of sorts for certain of us daddy lovers, or who grew up to be daddy lovers.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_04]: But the image of the oysters with the, they had the cells as a kind of bonnet, and they looked so cute and babies.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_04]: It's called me, what happens to them at the time.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_04]: They took it all!
- 8:39[SPEAKER_04]: It's horrifying.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_04]: It's, let's eat some babies.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_04]: They did not have to make them babies.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_03]: It's so odd.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: Why a carpenter with a walrus?
- 8:48[SPEAKER_01]: I don't understand, but it's jarring.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they eat all of the children.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, now we're gonna take a third journey very quickly, and this one I think you'll both have more opinions on.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: I am the walrus, was written by primarily by John Lennon, and released in the 1967 album during one of the most experimental periods in the Beatles career.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: The song appeared on the soundtrack in the television film Magical Mystery Tour, a project created as the band moved deeper into psychedelic music, following the success of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band,
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: And the world, you know, these are the wholesome beetles who are now using drugs very much.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: By the time the beetles had largely stopped, by this time, the beetles had largely stopped touring and we're using the recording studio as an instrument itself, layering orchestration, tape manipulation, and unusual sound effects.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_01]: The mid-1960s counter-culture, including the widespread use of LSD and other psychedelic drugs, shaped the man's approach to songwriting and sound design, encouraging a more abstract and surreal experimentation.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: Letting wrote this song partly as a response to discovering that teachers were analyzing Beatles lyrics in schools.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: I'm used by the idea that listeners might try to decode hidden meanings.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: He deliberately filled the song with nonsense phrases, wordplay, and absurd imagery.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: Here come all flat top e-bid, like all these weird songs that you don't quite know what they mean.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: Lines such as yellow matter custard and Tamalina Pilchard climbing up the Eiffel Tower were designed to resist simple interpretation.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: Let it also drew inspiration from through the looking glass borrowing the walrus from Lewis Carousel's poem.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: The result is a deliberately chaotic collage of references, puns and psychedelic imagery.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: The recording itself became one of the Beatles'
- 10:35[SPEAKER_01]: Producer George Martin arranged sweeping orchestral parts and coral vocals that move unpredictably through the track.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: Lenin also layered in a live radio broadcast of the King Lear performance which fades in during the final section of the song, the shifting textures and surreal lyrics mirror the psychedelic aesthetic of the late 1960s where art often aimed to replicate
- 10:57[SPEAKER_01]: disorienting, expansive feelings associated with altered states of consciousness.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_01]: And even if you just watch the music video for this song, it's fucking bizarre.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_01]: There's like a whole section of just people chewing.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: There's like a close up on faces just chewing over and over again.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, are you guys Beatles heads?
- 11:14[SPEAKER_01]: What are your thoughts on this era of Beatles music?
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go Christian here.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: He's a Brit and a teacher.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_02]: I've not a massive beatle's head but I know most of it and this came flooding back with memories of lights to the early childhood hearing my mom playing it and all that kind of thing.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_02]: It's a buzzer song and knowing now after sort of reading all the various bits it's like it was baby lendon as a big question to teach us to stop analyzing everything sometimes as song is just a song I think is brilliant and makes so much more sense because this is just
- 11:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there are things that you know about whether you've heard it for or not, but yeah, I'm the Woolworth's cookie cookie and the iron the egg band Which I haven't realized so if you look at the if you look at the album cover It's the Beatles dressed as animals one of them is in a walrus like there's a walrus head with like flippers on his hands and the others are all in like furry coats behind him with little hats Minolis are you a Beatles fan?
- 12:13[SPEAKER_04]: I don't dislike them, but I'm not a fan.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_04]: So I was not aware of this album at all.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_04]: I was not aware of this song at all.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_04]: So I started researching after I started doing our homework for today, because the cover was in the comic, and I was shocked after seeing that the actual costume is the exact replica of the costume on the cover, that they could get away with that, making a superhero after it's on land on in the Marvel Universe.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: And our character that we're gonna talk about is not created until the early 80s, which is nearly two decades after the production of this song.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_01]: I'll get into all of this in a moment.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna take you on another journey, this will take just a second.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna read you, not sing for you, the lyrics to I am the walrus.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: The song is much better than the words read aloud, because I practice this earlier.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, here we go.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_01]: I am he as you are he, as you are me, and we are all together, see how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly, I'm crying.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_01]: Sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come, corporation t-shirt, stupid bloody Tuesday man, you've been a naughty boy, yet you let your face grow long.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_01]: I am the Eggman, they are the Eggman.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: I am the walrus, Goo Goo Goo Gajub.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's Goo Goo Gajub, it's Goo Goo Gajub.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: Mr. City Policeman sitting pretty little policemen in a row see how they fly like Lucy in the sky beat Beetlesong see how they run I'm crying.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm crying.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: I'm crying.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog's eye Crab a locker fish wife pornographic priestess boy you've been a naughty girl.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_01]: You let your knickers down and because of that line This song got banned in some places because
- 13:47[SPEAKER_01]: I am the eggman they are the eggman.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: I am the walrus.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: Goo Goo.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_01]: Good you.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_01]: Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: If the sun don't come you get a tan from standing in the English rain.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: I am the eggman.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: Now good sir.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: What are you?
- 14:02[SPEAKER_01]: They are the eggman.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: A poor man made team to fortunes blows.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: Remember the King Lear stuff.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: I am the walrus, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, gooo, go
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: I am the Eggman, they are the Eggman.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: I am the walrus.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo
- 14:51[SPEAKER_01]: If ever that will thrive, bury my body, and give the letters which thou findest about me to Edmund Earl of Gloucester, seek him out upon the English party of untimely death death.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: I know thee well, a serviceable villain as duty as to the vices of thy mistress as badness would desire.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_00]: What is he dead?
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: Sit you down, father, rest you.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, friends, you did not get the visuals of these two men listening to me, say, jub, jub, jub, much of time, so how are we feeling about these lyrics?
- 15:21[SPEAKER_04]: I was about to call an ambulance for you.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not sure if it was lyrics or you want to be the next assist actually.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_02]: I'm having a stroke.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, good.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_02]: That's what we did.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_02]: I know he was trying to come up with notes in terms, but wow.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_01]: He was like an acid trip.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, here's my last tangent, and then we're jumping in I promise.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_01]: I emailed Jam Day Mateus, who's a friend of mine, who created this character.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: And I said, we're doing an episode on the walrus.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_01]: You want to share your thoughts on his creation.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_01]: Here's his direct reply, read out loud.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_01]: An episode on the walrus, Chad, have you run out of things to talk about?
- 15:55[SPEAKER_01]: My main memory, and I was just having some fun, are leaning into some J-L-I style ridiculousness, although this was pre-J-L-I.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_01]: My stuff is you know can get heavy, both psychologically and spiritually, and sometimes it's refreshing to just kick back and be silly, uh, reference the white rabbit episode, for over a few years back, friends.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: A villain in a wall resued inspired by Lewis Carroll via the classic Beatles song I am the walrus, which is one of my all-time favorites, seemed as silly as you could get.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: As for the name Hubert Carpender, I plotted the first wall res appearance in Defenders, and Peter Gillis provided the dialogue.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_01]: It was my last issue and Peter was taking over the book.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_01]: We thought it would be fun to transition the writing that way.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_01]: If the Hubert Carpenter name appeared in that story, it was possible it was in my plot and it's equally possible Peter came up with it while he was scripting.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_01]: I honestly don't know, it's been what more than 40 years.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_01]: That said, the last name Carpenter must reference the Carpenter character from Alice through the looking glass and the famous The Walrus and the Carpenter sequence, so whichever one of us came up with Hubert Carpenter was clearly thinking about the Lenin Carroll connection.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_01]: Now I want to write a new warra story, Pope Boll is well with you in these strange times, GMD.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_02]: So glad that he mentioned the fact that he was trying to do some of the JLI stuff because as I was reading it, that's exactly what I thought is, he's based on what I grab it, but he is basically a Justice League and National character.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_02]: If I saw Bluby on Booster Gold Beat in the crap out of him, yeah, that'd be fine, yeah, I could say it.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_01]: You want to tell everybody a little about the JLA?
- 17:20[SPEAKER_02]: It's the Boahaha League.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_02]: It was after crisis and all the main characters weren't, you know, that the big seven weren't available.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_02]: So it was a Blue Beetle boosted gold, fire and ice.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_02]: And it was actually, there was a corporate teamish that were essentially working on behalf of the government.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_02]: But it was Cuba, it was fun, it was personal.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_02]: And it was the first Justice League.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_02]: I have a red and I just bonded to them.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_02]: They are my favourite Justice Leagueers.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_04]: It's also the first Justice League that was adopted for the screen.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_02]: I actually owned that.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_02]: I have copies of that awful truth.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_02]: I'll be next to Generation X pilot.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_02]: Look, well-acted.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_01]: So we have jumped from walrus's as creatures to Louis Carroll to the Beatles back to jam debatets.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_01]: Minolas, how are you vibing on this so far?
- 18:13[SPEAKER_04]: I'm so happy to hear from DM.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_04]: He's one of my top two favorite comics writers.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_01]: I was just close to him as well.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_01]: He's legit one of my heroes and I have a book coming out in a few months and he did a cover blurb for it like his name is on my book which is crazy.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_04]: I'm currently collecting his entire writing output.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_04]: That's my current collection goal.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_04]: I'm big fan.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_04]: If I was talking to him, I would have asked him if all of the gay undertones were on per pusher note because I'm sure we will discuss them all over this is you.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_04]: I got the reference to the day alliance.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_04]: Well, especially the second appearance where they literally say wah ha ha on the couch.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_04]: He's very aware of the connections and I'm very happy when he switches to a slapstick in the middle of his books He does that very well as well and what was the name of his book on boom studios the superhero book was after there So hero squared hero squared that was amazing as well.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_01]: It was a great successor to this day live Okay, so all of that build up.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_01]: I rarely have to do this much build up for a character that has like seven appearances
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: Today we're gonna talk about the walrus this guy's been on my list for a while if my listeners will know I'm a huge defenders head.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_01]: I love this run of comics and this issue when I first got it back in the mid-90s made me laugh out loud And it's just made me smile ever since this character is nonsense, but I just a ton of fun I what where I'd have you familiar with the walrus before I invited you on this journey with me now
- 19:37[SPEAKER_04]: Not at all, I've never seen him, but as soon as you saw, I saw the photo him, the image of him, I was like, okay, yep, thank you.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_04]: There are people for this.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, Manola's described the costume of a hybrid carpenter, the walrus for us.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_04]: He looks like a fairy dressed as a walrus, but he's also branded with what looks like an Adidas look As a burpo, but you later find out it's related to the Beatles.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_01]: He looks ridiculous and kind of sexy I thought it was like it should be by the towering He's a head-y set guy, and he's wearing a dark brown skin tight suit
- 20:15[SPEAKER_01]: which seems to resemble the body of a walrus.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, walruses have blubber and big bulk.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_01]: And when we say blubber, we're not talking about like fat shaming.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_01]: There's just what the animals have literally.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_01]: And then he's wearing like feet flippers, which presumably will allow him to swim because that's what walruses have.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_01]: He's got like little coverings on his hand that don't allow any finger movement.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_01]: And then we've got this head covering that again resembles the album cover of the Beatles song The Walrus.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's like a little blue mask with tusks hanging down the side and then like a black head covering.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then we've got this W on his chest that looks like something a care bear would have.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's a letter W layered in red, yellow, green, and blue going down.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's giving very queer pride, but it's also giving very the logo for the vener schnitzel, like fast food restaurant.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_01]: Christian would have your thoughts on the walrus's fashion.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_01]: Is it a snick-tri-kicked?
- 21:14[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it's definitely a cake.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_02]: That logo is just a... Yeah, I wasn't sure whether it was queer, mad, or just had fallen in something, but knowing that it's from seeing the post of the beetles thing, it now makes a lot of sense.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_01]: There is a lot in this first appearance.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_01]: Do both of you have my notes pulled up Yeah, we're gonna do a little narration style Christian if you will read Uncle Humbert Minolis, we'll have you read the lines of the walrus.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_01]: Oh Lay in the other characters.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_01]: We both okay with that
- 21:41[SPEAKER_01]: As I mentioned, this is J.M.D's last issue of the defenders before Peter Gillis takes over and just makes everything gay.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_01]: This is Iceman gay, Moon Dragon gay, Valkyrie gay, Cloud gay, everything is gay moving from your former.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_01]: So whenever J.M.D did not intend, Peter Gillis very quickly intended in the entire run after this.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: Angel and Beast and Iceman are all on the team.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's the new Defenders era.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's delicious comics.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_01]: I love this entire run.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_01]: The title of this issue is, if this be walrus, we've got JamD, Peter Gillis, and Alan Copperberg, in the cavernous reaches hidden below a great university to be precise, the basement of the whole economics building of Brooklyn University.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_01]: An eerie process is taking place.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: One, which will soon involve the new Defenders, and perhaps the world, then again, perhaps not.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_01]: We see a balding, portley man and a white undershirt and yellow and red boxer shorts.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: Strap to a table, a raised table where a mad scientist, and he's running around like Marty Feldman is eager a little bit if you know that reference.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: The mad scientist is Humbert Carpenter, and the man strapped to the table is his nephew Hubert Carpenter.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: Hubert says, but I don't think I have a voice for him.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_03]: You're only thinking this is going to work this time Uncle Herbert Uncle Humbert replies You were with me boy, am I not the greatest scientific mind of my age?
- 23:03[SPEAKER_02]: But we've been at this point about 10 years now It is true that we've been hammered by Thoughts of celebrations and erratic instruments But when one's granted an age and you're only going to get a job as a janitor Well, you know my problems But today my Omnicron Ray generator will give you power beyond belief
- 23:20[SPEAKER_03]: This, this won't give me a rest like the Zelda beams did.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_03]: Will they uncle?
- 23:24[SPEAKER_03]: Of course not, nitwits.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_02]: Be still, the Zeta beams altered the molecular structure of your underwear.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_02]: That's all.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_02]: But now that a little photo's been added to the circuits, ah!
- 23:34[SPEAKER_02]: Ew!
- 23:35[SPEAKER_02]: Hold on, dude, have you.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_02]: I've got to tell you, it might hurt a bit.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_03]: It exploded!
- 23:39[SPEAKER_03]: Just like the lambda rays did.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_03]: You didn't tell me?
- 23:42[SPEAKER_03]: It worked.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_03]: At last, it worked.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_03]: Then, I've got the proportional strength of a turkey now.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_02]: No, I've changed my design.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_02]: It's even better.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_02]: Observe.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_02]: I ran this huge oak and be but you and it shatters against your rock hard skin like bolts of words Oh uncle.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_03]: How did you lift up that huge oak and be him?
- 24:02[SPEAKER_03]: I never mind that here, but cover-ups.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_03]: Pumps through that solid wall.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_02]: Holy moly!
- 24:07[SPEAKER_02]: I've got the proportional strength of... Oh, success!
- 24:10[SPEAKER_02]: Success!
- 24:11[SPEAKER_02]: Now they'll give me tenure.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_02]: Now they'll be a failed test.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_02]: And this is perfect.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_02]: The beast is coming into the lecture.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_02]: Be sure for before my nephew.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_03]: Lord, he's tried them all.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_03]: Captain Stout, who will man?
- 24:22[SPEAKER_03]: The master pair, the crimson turkey cheese.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_03]: Well, down to the W's.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_03]: What fearsome beast could he have given me the proportional strength of?
- 24:30[SPEAKER_03]: What begins with a W?
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's so good.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_01]: Hee verishly, Hubert's crossword puzzle worker skills are put into operation until...
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: I've got it!
- 24:41[SPEAKER_03]: And inspiration from the greatest group of all time!
- 24:43[SPEAKER_03]: And I've even got the question for it!
- 24:46[SPEAKER_03]: I still become a creature of the night!
- 24:48[SPEAKER_01]: Ehh!
- 24:48[SPEAKER_01]: Waluish!
- 24:49[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, this is an audio podcast, but every time Anolis is talking, his arms are going like, his marching down a track.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_02]: So the fact that he has the costume already, means that he have this lying around.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_04]: Hmm, well, I think she's a fairy.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that's commentary.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_01]: I want to share thoughts, but let's get through this first appearance, and then we have a lot to talk about.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_01]: So the narrator says, inspired by the Beatles, wall restresses in an all-brown suit with gray, flipper boots and gloves, a mask that has both whiskers and tusks on it and a rainbow w on the chest.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_01]: and you're not ready for his catchphrase.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: Usually, this Brooklyn Quickie Burger traffics in underseasoned meat, flaccid rolls, and watery shakes.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_01]: But today, it deals in fear.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_01]: And this is a running gag for J.M.D.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_01]: as well.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_01]: The Quickie Burger location in various comic books.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_00]: For it has seen the rise of a new dark star in the firmament of menace, the, uh, walrus.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_01]: Now watch as he destroys lamp posts, cars, fire hydrants, and chimneys for fun.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_03]: I do have the proportion of strength of the world's AP and just like Uncle told me to, I can engage in Master Strengthen!
- 25:58[SPEAKER_03]: I love Master Stretchen!
- 26:01[SPEAKER_03]: It's just like diving in my cup, only better!
- 26:03[SPEAKER_03]: I bet that will be the best Master Strengthen in the world!
- 26:07[SPEAKER_01]: All great in here!
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'm the world's!
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so this man is a cab driver.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: He's been subjecting himself to experiments for 10 years to his uncle who's a mad scientist slash janitor.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: And now he's robbing a quickie burger.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: Soon, back in the ruptured bowels of the home-ech building.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_02]: Don't you go go go go go go to the Jesus Christ?
- 26:25[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't like it many times.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_02]: You can do it once.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah yeah yeah.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_02]: Don't you go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go
- 26:44[SPEAKER_01]: So luckily the beast is lecturing it in nearby university.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: He's brought his friends Angel and I span with him and in a very odd moment I span pretends to be a Warren's boyfriend to get a college co-ed to go away.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's excellent.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_01]: Then Frogman arrives who's another recurring silly JMD character.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: I want to do a Frogman episode one day.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_01]: Frogman shows up a lot in my whiter.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: rabbit, a conversation with Sarah and Darrell for that episode.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_01]: Frogman wants to join the new defenders and it's this very lecture hall that while Rasoon runs into bursting through the wall like he's the cool-aid man.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_01]: Instead of, oh yeah, we get...
- 27:17[SPEAKER_03]: Woo, woo, must destruction!
- 27:20[SPEAKER_03]: I am the Warriors and I've come to demolish the beast.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_03]: Wait a minute, you were supposed to be alone.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_03]: But there's four guys up here.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_03]: Angle, what do I do now?
- 27:28[SPEAKER_03]: Dude, I'm going to destroy the moon.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_02]: Four for the price of one.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's the course of the show for us to show off.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_01]: Looking at leapfrog and walrus iceman comments, terrific.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_01]: Fruit cakes on parade, right after he pretended to be Warren's boyfriend.
- 27:42[SPEAKER_01]: Doro.
- 27:42[SPEAKER_01]: And Beast goes a literary as he yells, the time has come my bulging friend to talk of many things, a fist of cuffs and adults and clots and beetles songs, so we're appropriating Lewis Carroll here.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_01]: But when the Beast kicks walrus, he bounces off of him with the sound effect,
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, don't stop that wasn't really clever!
- 28:01[SPEAKER_01]: I smell y'all, I'll show you clever you, Looney.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not a Looney, I've got a wallet for first license.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_03]: I can do the New York Times crosscode puzzle every week and I have the proposal of strength of a walrus.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_01]: Beast replies, I don't care if you're the ghost of Fadiar buckle.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_01]: Who's a real celebrity?
- 28:17[SPEAKER_01]: There's a whole thing about Fadiar buckle, go look about.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_01]: Get off my stage and when walrus throws him away easily, Beast wonders,
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: Angel calls Warris a bargain basement blah, but Beast calls him a turkey.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_01]: It'll give us last week's to your bed.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_03]: Warr, must destruction!
- 28:35[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know, you, but not more, must destruction destroy the defenders.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_01]: Master structure is only the six-clock news.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_01]: Then Warris knocks all three defenders down with a tree and they are knocked out.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a bum!
- 28:48[SPEAKER_03]: I beat the defenders!
- 28:50[SPEAKER_03]: This is fought!
- 28:51[SPEAKER_03]: I'm the greatest supervillain in the world!
- 28:53[SPEAKER_03]: Whee!
- 28:54[SPEAKER_03]: Suddenly I don't feel so good!
- 28:56[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe it was all those squeaky burgers I had when I destroyed the building But I don't feel as strong as I did a while ago either!
- 29:02[SPEAKER_03]: Or maybe the race from the polar ice cup!
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: Oh no, you don't think from right, you're so very awful here, but and then frog man jumps in ready for the fight and now feed its flipper to flipper till the end he says and the walrus is parent powers wear out just then and he simply falls over so the victor of the fight is declared on television as frog man the guy that defeated all the Avengers frog man comes in at the right moment the defenders are humiliated and the issue ends with a loony to instile the the the the the that's all folk
- 29:34[SPEAKER_01]: This is a delicious comic book.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, we have a lot to unpack here.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_01]: Let's begin with Uncle Humbert and his experiments He like came up with the thing and every week he puts a new like ray in and like let's try an art vark this week Well, that didn't work.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_01]: Let's try Like we're just working our way through the alphabet
- 29:56[SPEAKER_02]: actually kind of smart, he's just stuffed because he hasn't got money.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_02]: You know, you've got to do, but there's a whole series of other animals out there, somewhere that I'm just building up, you know, Hubert's Humboldt Zoo to go against the defenders.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_02]: There's a many series of it.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, we need the water.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_04]: It's you that is water.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_04]: The water has become the terrific turkey, and it's all about that.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_04]: Because he really, he really wishes to eat had been the turkey.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_04]: Also, you can tell that there's a different script or plot of it was scripted after the fact because of the throwaway line.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, Uncle, how did you pick that up?
- 30:29[SPEAKER_04]: And it's never answered.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_04]: Because Peter gives us just wanted to explain that final.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_04]: And I have a no prize explanation in my head that may be.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_04]: Uncle Hamburg is Hubert from the future.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_04]: Come back.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, that's why he has...
- 30:41[SPEAKER_04]: I think he has super strength.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_01]: I think Uncle Hamburg already gave himself turkey powers.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_01]: And just doesn't want to announce this.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_03]: The other reality one was to be Jay Maturki.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: Christian Fuck Mary Kill Captain Stote, Squirrel Man, the Masked Taper.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_01]: We're leaving the crimson turkey out, because clearly that's the most applicable one I can do for you.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_01]: Because you just want to stop the turkey.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_02]: What was it?
- 31:02[SPEAKER_02]: The don't Captain Stote, no, let's kill him.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_02]: I'll marry the Taipa and Fuck the Squirrel.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, okay.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_00]: Now, we also have Hubert.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but, Alan, Hubert had this costume ready to go.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_01]: Minolas, what are your thoughts on where the origin of the actual Walrus costume is?
- 31:18[SPEAKER_04]: And as I said, for air think he's a fairy, it's clear as day.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_04]: They am couldn't say it on the face.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_04]: Why else would he have a full size wall risk costume just lying around with a rainbow w. With a rainbow w. But what if he's the person?
- 31:30[SPEAKER_02]: No, keep man of that for him.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that costume was there.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_01]: And he had a dirty costume ready to go as well.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_01]: You just know that.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: Um, we also have to comment on ice man's loosely homosexual behavior in this issue.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_02]: It's a wonderful I posted about this week.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_02]: It was like what the hell seriously?
- 31:46[SPEAKER_02]: The signs were all there.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_02]: I mean she's Yeah, just trying to get rid of people so you're gonna pretend to be Warren's boyfriend.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_02]: I'm beast boy friend.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_02]: What's that?
- 31:53[SPEAKER_02]: I can't remember.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_02]: He's gonna be one one of their boys.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_02]: I think
- 31:56[SPEAKER_01]: I've been using that fast way seriously about Bobby you just just say it nobody cares everyone will tell the whole time every time he opens his mouth like yeah you're so straight yes and then the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the topic of the
- 32:19[SPEAKER_01]: What do we know about a Hubert's life before becoming the walrus?
- 32:22[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he seems quite happy.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he's a chauffeur.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_02]: Are they my driver?
- 32:27[SPEAKER_02]: He does the Times Crossword.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_02]: He goes to factory conventions.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, what does he make?
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: He creates his Beatles collection in his room.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: And when he gets amped up with superpowers, he's like, let me put something on skin tight and run down to the local Quiky Burger.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_01]: Like, that's his law.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: Uncle Humber just wants to get on television, there's something here.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_04]: I love how much of a Pagent Mum, Uncle Humber is.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_04]: All he cares about is let's destroy things so we can get on TV.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, like you said, he was leading a quiet life but then he found his true calling which is writing stuff and then he's just so happy with everything.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_03]: I love what's made me bring up some funnily.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_04]: There's an amazing panel of him hitting Iceman with his belly while he's narrating all of his CV and that's basically all how his powers work, he just hits people with his belly and they bounce off, which is very interesting.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, let's jump to his second appearance.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_01]: And again, this man does not have a lot.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: Christian, tell us about Spectacular Spider-Man at 185.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_01]: I hope you love Frogman after this, because God is he great.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_02]: Honestly, yeah, absolutely.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_02]: Frogman too as well, you know, yeah, this was not the first Frogman, it was the second Frogman that we've now.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_01]: Well there's an all Daredevil villain from the 1980s called Leapfrog and then there's frogman after that.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's great.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_02]: I've been again, you know, this is another gender mass.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, it's just funny, which is great.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_02]: So it's uh, picking up straight after that spectacular what I eat for and Spidey seems to be rethinking every one of his life choices at this point.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, after being faced with uh, the second frogman.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_02]: But you know, they're not really the focus of our episode.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_02]: You're right.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_02]: We need to do a frogman episode.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_02]: So, the, the, the, the, the, the, the second front band's name is, whatever's name is, uh, Eugene, the, they've all, they've all got, they've all got very, um, yeah, not modern names.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_02]: Should we say, they're, they're off to the room.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_02]: We got, we don't go over to the brunt of the Bronx where the war is.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_01]: So, so the original frogman, his real name is Vincent Patelio, P. A. I. L. I. O.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: And then the, the frogman character Eugene, who's the one that we see more affectionate is his son.
- 34:45[SPEAKER_02]: off the box.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah that Spidey and Eugene are bickering away at each other at which point the walrus makes his return.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_02]: Climbing into a whole under a refrigerator in a waste dump in the Bronx somewhere to meet the
- 35:01[SPEAKER_02]: white rabbit who I've got really come across before and I kind of love her.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_01]: I have a white rabbit episode out with Sarah's century and there are friends go listen.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_02]: I must have listened to her.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_01]: I just can't remember if I really fun it's really fun.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_02]: She kind of like yeah what happens if you cross the black cat and the penguin together?
- 35:17[SPEAKER_02]: It's she's amazing.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_02]: I have to admit it took me way too long to realize these two were linked because the whole Alice, the Alice and Wonderland thing at this point I think it was the third time I was reading this before I realised this so yeah, maybe it might be something on me At which point the walrus decides or well really the walrus doesn't what he's told at every single point in this issue And basically is like would say he's seduced into cooperation by the white rabbit behind you
- 35:47[SPEAKER_02]: Is he really that straight?
- 35:49[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think he is, but it basically follows every command she gives, and she decides to test him with exploding carrot and razor sharp carrots, because let's keep a theme.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_02]: More or so of that point is pissed and grabs her by the years, consent it, consent, grabs her by the years, and spends next three panels just basically go, huh?
- 36:09[SPEAKER_02]: Ah, well, at which point she explains her offer to become the Terrible To, obviously print the best I'd advise her, the Terrible To What?
- 36:18[SPEAKER_01]: The White Rabbit has been defeated by Frogman before, so she contacts the Wallace, lets team up and destroy the Frogman, we'll make our own little team, a rabbit, no Wallace versus a Frog, why the fuck not?
- 36:28[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely, because who is it?
- 36:31[SPEAKER_02]: It's the speed demon and yellow claw have also been defeated by Frogman I know it here.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_02]: It was that good, but they basically have left a laughter after off the phone and ignored all other calls So she's basically stuck with
- 36:43[SPEAKER_02]: with the walrus, with a flick back to Peter and MJ.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the spider marriage, oh, I remember them later.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_02]: In lower man Hassan, we seek the walrus and the rabbit in the most amazing mobile ripoff I have ever seen with the fact that it has bunny ears and teeth and a little fluffy tail, and I just think Bruce Wayne is seeing seeding.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_02]: You can go off and wind it, go off and wind it, go off and go and go off and wind it, go off and wind it, go off and wind it.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_02]: This point, because I'm sorry, that is the best card
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, white rabbit gets this car that she just decks out to look like a white rabbit.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's like a little fancy machine.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_01]: The penguin read is very fair.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's got like buck teeth on the front and ears down the side.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_01]: She later rides it right around in like a giant white rabbit robot.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_01]: But like a mechanized robot that she's like piloting through the street.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_01]: She's an amazing character.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_02]: I always point my rabbit starts to explain her plan and the fact that you know the speed demon in yellow claw of laughed at her and hung up on her and he's basically third on our list and I guess guess he'll do you know he's big he's done it on follow orders and he'll cause chaos because they have both been thwarted by their mortal enemy the amazing front front man.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_03]: War us starts to realise that maybe this wasn't the best choice.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, he's in for Penny in for a pound.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_02]: Just follows a lead and they decide to start causing chaos in Manhattan.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_01]: So the white rabbit shoots her like her umbrella at a quickie burger and blows it up.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_01]: And she says, well, my adipose buck tooth ally.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_01]: Why are you just standing there?
- 38:12[SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, what are the
- 38:13[SPEAKER_01]: What are we doing?
- 38:14[SPEAKER_01]: Why don't we just rob a bank and go somewhere?
- 38:16[SPEAKER_01]: This is stupid.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_02]: They'd say he's actually just, can we just rob a bank, go somewhere warm and just sell this out because this is fucking stupid.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_01]: She rolls her eyes.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_01]: Ugh, you're never going to get anywhere in life thinking like that.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_01]: And then boops him on the nose and says, now get busy with that mayhem at which point he does.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_02]: And yet it's just like a defender.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_02]: He just doesn't like it.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_02]: pulls up, pulls up and the lamb post starts throwing up buildings, throwing it up at various bits, which starts to raise, notice for Spider-Man and that frogman really, and Spider-Man's there as well.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_02]: They start to battle Spider-Man essentially beats white rabbit, snaps up, snaps around Braille, she's got spare, it's fine, fights, more us until he explains what his powers are.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_01]: We get white rabbits catchphrase, as she shoots carrots out of her umbrella, her nurse
- 39:10[SPEAKER_02]: carrots.
- 39:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's so dumb.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_02]: And then we get the bohaha moment because Peter has just found out what the walrus's powers are.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_02]: He thinks they're fairly familiar.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_02]: The proportion of strength and speed of a walrus are our and of agility.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_02]: So he should basically just be lying on the floor at this point.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_01]: He just loses there and I was in bitch slaps him into the ground All of us has a bang and your management issues here.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_02]: I think he just bitch slaps him across the road Right on his ass and is eventually defeated by leapfrog just leapfrog you're around because he has the agility of a wall rust and it's not that agile
- 39:53[SPEAKER_02]: They finally beat white rabbit while they're gloaty over her pod, uh, COVID-19's body at that point.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_02]: Warus comes charging out back at them.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_02]: Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_02]: Calm down.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_02]: You've already been beaten once.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_02]: Just take the else and he's flick to the face by spiderback.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_01]: One thing goes flick to the nose.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm guessing his like omnacron powers are wearing off a little bit in this appearance.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the other thing that would have made it better.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna notice your cat this would be one punch.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_02]: Just one punch.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_04]: I think that was the reference he was making like with Guy Gunner will fall with one punch there Exactly, and that's it.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think you know the powers are gone.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_02]: He's on the floor.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_01]: He's gone and that's it There's a lot of stuff going on with frogman and his dad and this Mary Jane having some great moments JMD writes the hell out of his Spider-Manks make it exactly right
- 40:39[SPEAKER_02]: I, you know, I didn't read it the next couple of issues as well.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_02]: I remember bits of this, but yeah, it's so much fun.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_04]: And he's a brother there after any meet the fixer.
- 40:49[SPEAKER_04]: So he just needs to disconnect.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_04]: It's very real.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_04]: Exactly.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_01]: Then we have the worst thing that could ever happen to a character.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_01]: And that's appearing in a Deadpool comic.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_01]: Years later, Christopher Hastings picks up, or Hastings picks up the walrus for the fear itself deadpool limited series.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_01]: Deadpool, you know, demand of martini's really helped me realize.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_01]: This is like straight man appropriating queer culture whenever deadpools in.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_01]: If you just look at the cover of fear itself deadpool 1, we've got all of the scary like hammer gods with juggernaut in the front.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_01]: With like deadpools like laying in like a sexy lady pose, just in front of them like caressing a hammer and you're like okay.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_01]: Manila's tell us about this series, which I'm gonna presume you had not read before.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_01]: I have not read, but I actually enjoyed quite a bit.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't expect it.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_04]: So this is for itself that will be itself as many memories and event where Odin's brother goes a bit opera and just yells, yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo
- 41:42[SPEAKER_04]: you get a hammer, you get a hammer, you get a hammer at a variety of villains and then the heroes proceed to get hammers of their own etc.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_04]: and then they hammer it out and the story is about that bullfilling a bit left out for not being part of this and he's like, I want to get my own hammers and give them to people and give them superpowers.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_04]: so the person he chooses to give the hammer to is the walrus and then there's kibri tan, there's a magic hammer, it's a magic hammer but it is actually a magic hammer, there's worms running around, it's quite a bit of fun,
- 42:11[SPEAKER_01]: There's a downright offensive image in here with like Deadpool like MC Hammer like in hammer pants doing the hammer time dance of I hate it, I don't like the appropriation.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_04]: So when we Deadpool is at the gig installing security systems with a plumber crew that you go wrong in.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_04]: many, many ways, and that's where he learns about the fear itself of him going on TV.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_04]: At the same time, that the Plammers van is exploded by Bazooka wielding Warhol, that will become relevant later, and that causes a mundane looking sledgehammer to fly onto his head, and that's where he figures out if an a-rated villain plus a-rated
- 42:47[SPEAKER_04]: then a knife rated hammer, plus and he's thought to drill his off, and after going through an alphabetical list of villains, just like in his origin story, he said to us on the walrus, and I love the little detail on the computer screen, where under weaknesses it lists excess exceptionally unintelligent, because the computer has to be passive aggressive, like the
- 43:06[SPEAKER_04]: So, he deems the world-risk worthy of the hammer that he goes ahead to Badzazu, the heck out of, he puts on miniature screaming heads that remind me of the Zuban, the Zuma marble suitor, he puts on crusted rubies, he can really throw a brim seat up.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_04]: He tracks him down to the monster rally, where he's currently operating.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_01]: The monster truck rally, where walrus is like using his invulnerability, because he can't be destroyed when he explodes in the trucks.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_04]: and he has a lovely hobby here because he's pretending to be pit crew and he's feeling the the tires of the monster trucks with these so they can explode and because the rapper and then he goes back into the locker rooms and he's still swinging the crowd they truck explodes the beast is swinging the crowd and he goes he messed destruction messed destruction
- 43:55[SPEAKER_04]: I love how Mascanzo is inflicting destruction, like when you find your calling and you you take joy in it, that's the best way to live your life, but after all this destruction is done, he's like now it's time for profit.
- 44:06[SPEAKER_04]: So in this in this case it's 50 bucks and the window rental card that he built first from the driver's locker room.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_04]: So he's he's much operandi.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_04]: He's a mall is basically he kills monster truck drivers in order to get the window rental cards and rent movies that he never
- 44:25[SPEAKER_04]: And that bull is so funny, he has a lot of supply of cost-co-bought dynamite that he uses to orchestrate fake-looking events to convince the wallers that he is part of some epic quest.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_04]: So he drops the hammer on him with dynamite idea, and he makes an explosion and he finds it, and then he shows up in a ghost-based mask from Costco, basically, to fake out giving him his calling, so he's calling himself the specter of mass destruction, and he's going to get him
- 44:55[SPEAKER_01]: Before Deadpool explodes him, we see Walrus go to the video store in full costume And if you guys ever done that thing where you're so mad at someone you're like driving your car And you're like arguing with them and they're not in the car But you're just saying everything you're pissed about he's just ranting about spider-man while like picking up videos When his full costume at the store
- 45:13[SPEAKER_01]: He could not get asked to get drawn into Deadpool's nonsense, but yeah, suddenly he has a vaginal hammer.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_04]: So, Wade gives him a mission to go to this town of Simmeron, New Mexico, that he has overhead from his plumbers, and he thinks, if the plumbers are going there, there must be gold there, because the plumbers are on to something, with this part of the plot makes absolutely no sense.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_04]: And then Deadpool's plan is that once there is havoc he can go there and sell his services to the town So he can be a merc and stop all the fracas.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_04]: The problem is the hammer that he gave him is actually magical And the plumbers are secretly werewolf hunters, and they were trying to get the hammer there because it activates under the moonlight And it causes werewolves to lose their powers of healing.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_04]: There's a whole lot of a subload that doesn't go anywhere And that means
- 46:07[SPEAKER_01]: If we didn't think he was queer yet, issue two opens with walrus has broken into the home of one of these men tied up his wife and then climbed in bed with this man.
- 46:16[SPEAKER_01]: With the hammer in between them, so the man rolls over and was like, oh honey, what's this?
- 46:21[SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, oh, I bet the raccoons woke me up and then Hubert's laying there all sexy and he's like, oh man, it was a walrus and then he's chasing this man around his home.
- 46:29[SPEAKER_01]: With the, like, the queerie starts to show up very clearly.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_04]: They are leaning into that logo as they suit.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_04]: So the plan is that he gets to smash through a few houses to create panic Well the first one is he gets in the bed the second one is so funny because they're going into this little girls room And he's like yeah, let's break everything down, but the girls room is filled with deadpool Memorial Billion and an authorized merch and he's like maybe not destroy this room.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_04]: He's trying to convince him otherwise But then they go to her brother's room and it's filled with cable mats and there's it like yeah, you can go crazy in this room.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_01]: That's fine.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's like
- 47:03[SPEAKER_01]: And it's nice as full of cable action figures and cable posters.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_01]: There's like 400 cable action figures in this child's room.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_04]: Which, making all of this much sad, this kid is 3D printing them himself.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_04]: So when he's done enough, uh, me, him, way decided this time for his graduation to tell him that the hammer is actually activated with more cost to dynamite, he's like, yeah, hit this axe on the ground because the explosion and that's, that's a very impressive page as well.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_01]: So, and he gives us the most ominous Google, Google, uh, I can't say it is a child.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's a turn to the camera with like a very serious face and like the explosion lighting behind him, he's like, Google, Google, there you go.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_04]: There you go.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_04]: The artist is trying the heck out of this chromic.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_04]: I'm really enjoying it.
- 47:49[SPEAKER_04]: It was not a word of him at all before this So that pulled so's up to the town's folk who are trying to seal themselves away into this is himself as Deadpool traveling wall looters tamer
- 47:58[SPEAKER_04]: and convenes them to hire him in return for all of the confederation calls that are apparently keeping the town and he's helped by the girl who owned the room with all the merchandise and sees Claude head to toe in Deadpool Mercy has the earrings, the ponytail clips, the teaser, the overalls, the socks and the sues, always with Deadpool logo, sees you remember a little girl that was obsessed with Deadpool did you guys remember finding Nemo there was that little girl who was like obsessed with shaking the fish up and like she had the like
- 48:28[SPEAKER_01]: Arla, I think, was her name.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_01]: This girl is that girl.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_04]: Like, she's, she's Deadpool's biggest fan.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_04]: So, the fight starts?
- 48:34[SPEAKER_04]: Wait, this happened quite an easy time with him, and he makes a very fun comment.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_04]: Oh my god, your body.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_04]: It's like a bouncy castle for my fists, which is any of what I really appreciate.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_04]: That's a lot of nice things.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_01]: In one of his doesn't recognize Deadpool, because Deadpool had the ghost costume on before.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_01]: Now he's fighting Deadpool, who he thinks is a superhero.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's fun, but this is nonsense.
- 48:55[SPEAKER_01]: It should have been a long shot.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_04]: I thought it would be more excuse.
- 48:58[SPEAKER_04]: I thought it would be dressed.
- 48:59[SPEAKER_04]: I would have read five excuse of this.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_04]: Just enjoyable.
- 49:02[SPEAKER_04]: We have writing things around this small town.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_01]: The cover of issue three is Wallace doing the blob move.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_01]: Where he's just sitting on Deadpool.
- 49:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's blob signature move.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_01]: He just landed on somebody and sit there.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, as the second day is closing the third one opens, we have the big turn that the moon light hits the hammer and then it starts pulsating, it explodes all of the vaseline that weight has done and it's left on its own with glowing rune and we find out that what it does is it cancels out healing factors.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_01]: But Deadpool, Issue 3 opens with Deadpool having a little, like, delirious daydream.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_01]: He is Humpty Dumpty holding a stopwatch in a drug hazed, like, sun sky, sitting on a box of cornflakes with a little hippie walrus looking up at him saying, you are the Eggman.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_01]: And then Deadpool says, you are the Eggman and he goes, I am the walrus.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_01]: So literal lines from the Beatles song.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, things with his research, I really like this LSD trip to start things off.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_04]: That's as he's long-tailed, basically.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, wait, since that he can't win here, he tries to become the spectrum of mass destruction again, to convince him to stop, but apparently he's not stupid enough for this to work twice.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_04]: So he tries to quit, he meets the whirlwind hunters, they tell him about the whirlwind, he has a sense of hard, he goes back and forth.
- 50:21[SPEAKER_04]: starts fighting again and what actually gets the walrus is all the yapping which is very typical for that food or he can't handle a lot of the talking he thought it was bad with Spider-Man but now with Deadpool he's met his mates he defeats him for a bit and I like his plan to celebrate which is I'm going to throw a car into another car which is his favorite hobby and then we get a very nice line between the two you like set up set up your warsdom spider-man I can't hear myself think
- 50:50[SPEAKER_04]: And then we get the amazing panel, we refer to Alia who had the Walu's full-on digs his sompers into Wade's soldier.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so first-day Deadpool hits him with a car and again we get Lewis Carroll.
- 51:00[SPEAKER_01]: The time has come, the Deadpool's bed, is said to speak of many things.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_01]: Of me and you, this walrus jerk, a jerk who needs beatings, and can I punt him all the way to Saratoga Springs?
- 51:11[SPEAKER_04]: and the walrus goes that was a terrible poem and then 18 in the pocket shoulder link syncs his tusks fully and he goes money from this because of all the noise so he basically ends up when he just wanted to do mass destruction get some money he now just wants to kill the whole town including the kids he takes a very dark turn he says I want to kill all just to shut them up basically but when what he really actually wanted was just to smash the car into another car and get some gold
- 51:37[SPEAKER_04]: And his ultimate goal here is to get the goal so he can buy his, he can finally buy his own video rental cards so he doesn't have to steal other people's, which is so cute.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_04]: That's such a simplistic goal.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_04]: Wallace is pissed.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_04]: We get, I am the walrus.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_01]: Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo, Goo,
- 51:59[SPEAKER_04]: And that's another reference I had to google that.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_04]: That's another Beatles song, Glyric.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_04]: Are you aware of that said?
- 52:05[SPEAKER_04]: The Wallace was Paul.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the Wallace was Paul.
- 52:08[SPEAKER_04]: Is a lyric from Glyssonion from the Beatles' White album.
- 52:11[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_04]: It's very fun because it's a reference to the whole album legend about Paul is dead.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_04]: There was an album legend that Paul Markardney had died and was replaced by a look alike.
- 52:21[SPEAKER_04]: So John Lennon slipped that lyric into the Glyssonion saying, now the Paul, Paul is in dead.
- 52:26[SPEAKER_04]: The Wallace was Paul.
- 52:27[SPEAKER_01]: Look at Christopher Hastings layering the references.
- 52:31[SPEAKER_01]: Nice work.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_04]: It's very impressive.
- 52:33[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and they basically end with that would be very smart because he figures out that the hammer is powered by Moonlight, so he tricks him into the side of the surface, where his hammer won't work, and he will have access to guns, and then there's a suit out and happy ending for everyone.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_01]: wildly fun set of appearances.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then we have just kind of a smattering of like one off appearances, daughters of the dragon number four.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_01]: He's seen in a strip club with Mr.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_01]: Fish and he's flirting with an stripper named Candy.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_01]: In a Marvel night Spider-Man volume two number five, he's one of many super villains hired by Richard Fisk, the son of the kingpin, to fight Spider-Man.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_01]: In amazing Spider-Man volume four number one, the pregnant spider woman with like a flick of her fingers defeats Wallace white rabbit and gold bug.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_01]: And so there's like
- 53:18[SPEAKER_01]: panel.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_01]: In unbelievable Gwenpool 13, we see while we're just briefly get trapped in Arcade's murder world in a Dungeons & Dragons theme, alongside Bob, Agent of Hydra and Peepers, and I don't know what the fuck he's doing here.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_01]: In amazing Spider-Man Volume 5, number 17 and 18, he's among the animal-themed supervillains captured by Arcade and Craven the Hunter and put in Central Park where billionaires are piloting mech suits to hunt them down.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_01]: This is where the given
- 53:46[SPEAKER_01]: And then in Miles Morales, Spider-Man, Volume 2, Number 18, he's at the bar with no name drinking, and he laughs at Miles Morales and calls him Spider-Kid.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_01]: So like he's had a little quieter version of his life most recently as he's getting pulled in and out of madness.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_01]: This is a really fun character who's weirdly powerful, and this is the thing with the gimmick villains that we've been talking about is there's a level of seriousness to these characters.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_01]: This guy's caught up in popular culture references.
- 54:12[SPEAKER_01]: It took us 20 minutes to explain why
- 54:15[SPEAKER_01]: Well, his reference is mattered.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_01]: But how are you thinking and feeling about the E-wallress as we are kind of wrapping up our conversation on Hubert Carpenter?
- 54:24[SPEAKER_04]: Can I add one note from one of his appearances, which I found very funny?
- 54:28[SPEAKER_04]: From the unbeatable squirrel girl is here.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_04]: It's easy to miss because he only plays in some panels, but what Ryan North was doing in this, he's using his adding captions and then in the panels.
- 54:37[SPEAKER_04]: So he's devolving a whole page of his captions to the walrus.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_04]: So he's going fun fact about the walrus.
- 54:43[SPEAKER_04]: He has the proportional speed, strength and agility of the walrus.
- 54:46[SPEAKER_04]: But as walruses are actually larger than humans, technically that makes him slower and weaker than even a regular person.
- 54:54[SPEAKER_04]: That's just how proportionality works.
- 54:56[SPEAKER_04]: Sorry the walrus, which explains so much about him.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_02]: I kind of love, he's just this job I do who just gets pulled into stuff and is always in the background and never really gets a big chance to shine but it's just always around and punching stuff and causing mass destruction because that's what he's good at.
- 55:16[SPEAKER_01]: a little jarred by him at the monster truck rally like murdering people and just like joyfully having fun with it.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_01]: He's almost a deadpool variant in that way, right?
- 55:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to like firebees to torture the crowd ha ha and then you just like his hanging out in his suit.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_00]: He enjoys the Merckwork a little bit.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_01]: uh he's he's fun he's antics and he's silly and he's caught up in these references that are you know 50-60 years old at this point but I think he's delightful he's easily recognizable and bizarrely powerful as well I kind of want to see the gimmick more I like let's put him on a team with like orca and a bunch of other like tiger shark and you know Mr.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_01]: Fish and the eel there's like there's some sort of a couple of
- 55:57[SPEAKER_01]: aquarium themed supervillain group that's just waiting to be formed because there's a lot of fish bad guys there's piranha and then they're they're they're they're they're to fight stingray you know like it's sub sort of bizarre stupid like underwater adventure uh he gets a sidekick that's like the seal you know or the the seal cub or something like there's
- 56:16[SPEAKER_01]: There's some really silly gimmicky things that would be delightful on the page.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_01]: Him and White Rabbit exploring their relationship, bringing Frogman back.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_01]: But there's also like a really serious version of this character waiting to be told, right?
- 56:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like, giving him some actual space to be more complicated and to have like a deeper exploration where he's a genuine threat to a team and there are stakes and he has things that he has to fight for and conquer and overcome.
- 56:42[SPEAKER_01]: I think either is really fun, but mostly I just wanted to see him on a team full of fish team bad guys.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_04]: I'm really surprised he didn't make the legional, is it the legional flusures that they did in spectacular?
- 56:54[SPEAKER_04]: I'm very surprised he didn't show up.
- 56:56[SPEAKER_04]: It's like kangaroo and given and yeah.
- 56:58[SPEAKER_04]: Exactly.
- 56:59[SPEAKER_04]: How is he missing out?
- 57:00[SPEAKER_04]: But he's so charming.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_04]: He's just a big dumb goofy guy, and he's happy making things explode.
- 57:05[SPEAKER_04]: I think Petty Ff watching movies and listening to the Beatles.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_04]: But he's also raped with his gigantic muscle belly.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_04]: So that works for him.
- 57:12[SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, he just wants to let's listen to him.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see him meet the nanny who's in her little suit.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_01]: Because we get the Eggman and the Walrus Joe.
- 57:21[SPEAKER_02]: That'd be fun.
- 57:21[SPEAKER_01]: But even more, do you know what we need?
- 57:23[SPEAKER_01]: And this is ridiculous.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see the Beetle kick his ass.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_01]: The Spider-Man villain, the Beetle.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_02]: You know what, he's the sort of character that if he'd been like redeemed in Thunderbolts and then just scripted back and turned him into a decent proper character, here begins the beat and that would have been an easy home.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he's just silly.
- 57:47[SPEAKER_02]: I don't really want to see him do anything serious.
- 57:49[SPEAKER_02]: I just want to see him be silly and fun and not taking anything seriously.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_02]: Just stick him in a thing called the boy Aquarium or something.
- 57:57[SPEAKER_04]: I want to see him in the next bright special, being in a gay bar with the demolition man.
- 58:01[SPEAKER_02]: But not realizing where he is.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, goodness.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_01]: He's hanging out with a rhinoceros from Avengers the point of me, like I love her.
- 58:08[SPEAKER_01]: I love her.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_01]: Also, he's mass destruction.
- 58:11[SPEAKER_01]: He's a super villain who likes destroying shit.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like, there's some really interesting potential for this character, more than the gimmick, but you have to make the gimmick part of it.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's Christopher Hastings got it right, as silly as that Deadpool series is.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_04]: I'm surprised he hasn't popped up more.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_04]: I went through all of his cameo lists and I was lifting through the issues and I missed the cameo in his case.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_04]: I had to go back and find because it's literally one finalist case.
- 58:34[SPEAKER_02]: He's one of those characters that's got such a good look that you just throw him in the background of anything with the tasks of the flippers.
- 58:41[SPEAKER_02]: You know who it's gonna be.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_01]: Gimmickman, hands on my show this month with it's Gimmickman,
- 58:45[SPEAKER_01]: Give me a month on my show this month with the trials of rampage and still man.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_01]: And we talk about that was still made to see if you put him in the background of anything.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_01]: You just have a pair of still leg and it immediately recognized the exact right.
- 58:56[SPEAKER_04]: I love give me a month.
- 58:57[SPEAKER_04]: It's going to be the task master of these so to find most of the impigulants.
- 59:00[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to share a character and spot about on the amazing friends.
- 59:03[SPEAKER_01]: But go back to to my episode that opened this month.
- 59:06[SPEAKER_01]: My interview with Jim Salacrupping Glenn Hurdling where we talk about combo man.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_01]: If you guys remember that, find me.
- 59:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 59:13[SPEAKER_04]: I never find the references I was supposed to as a teen.
- 59:17[SPEAKER_01]: I love taking these little journeys every characters worthy of some analysis even if their ladies don't man in the walrus So I love hanging out with you both what what so much joy and silliness I love getting to be silly with both of you on a regular basis.
- 59:31[SPEAKER_01]: Minolis year walrus voice in Your energy was delightful today.
- 59:36[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to shoot wine that
- 59:39[SPEAKER_01]: The world's the serious place, but we are given ourselves permission to have a good time.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_00]: I had a great time with you both.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'd love to hear any final thoughts.
- 59:45[SPEAKER_01]: Where can people find you online if you would like to plug anything for late March, 2026?
- 59:52[SPEAKER_01]: Follow the show at Grimalkon under score lane.
- 59:54[SPEAKER_01]: We are wrapping up gimmick villain month on the show.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_01]: And April is going to be all about gay cowboys.
- 59:59[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to do the trial of the raw-hide kid over on the main show.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_01]: And we're going to open the Patreon in April with a conversation about the Texas Twister, which is a delightfully fun Marvel character, so stay tuned for that.
- 1:00:13[SPEAKER_02]: I'm Chris Shesmith, I'm on Blue Sky and Instagram, Chris E1701, and I'm keeping with the gimmicks they, I'm actually guesting on an episode of a podcast called gimmicks, looking at structure breaking and one-off style episodes of TV shows, talking about Babylon
- 1:00:33[SPEAKER_02]: pretty much as long time this episode comes out.
- 1:00:36[SPEAKER_02]: So we're keeping the gimmick's march going.
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_01]: Excellent to see you buddy.
- 1:00:40[SPEAKER_01]: And stay tuned if you're Christian as the voice of Mastermind that you will put you to our next Captain Written Read.
- 1:00:44[SPEAKER_01]: I'm what I think.
- 1:00:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm an honest.
- 1:00:46[SPEAKER_04]: So people can find me as at that comics Greek.
