- 0:23Speaker 1: Happy Friday, everybody.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Glad to be with you.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Once again here as we march towards a weekend full
- 0:36Speaker 2: of sports.
- 0:36Speaker 1: No Utah football, which is a bummer.
- 0:39Speaker 2: The bye week will be used to watch the rest
- 0:44Speaker 2: of the Big 12 Conference, some baseball playoffs maybe, NFL football,
- 0:49Speaker 2: of course, a full slate this weekend, and some pretty
- 0:52Speaker 2: interesting games around the world of college football. Just none
- 0:55Speaker 2: of them involve your Utes. We will talk about all
- 0:58Speaker 2: those things today. Bill Riley is going to join us
- 1:00Speaker 2: on the show as the voice of the Utes. I
- 1:04Speaker 2: think I know what he's doing with his Saturday off.
- 1:07Speaker 2: You got a clue on it? to that. I think yesterday,
- 1:10Speaker 2: I think bill might be a crossing over into my
- 1:13Speaker 2: world of MMA a little bit this weekend.
- 1:20Speaker 3: .
- 1:22Speaker 1: .
- 1:33Speaker 2: I don't think this
- 1:35Speaker 2: one has sold as well as the other events that
- 1:38Speaker 2: they brought to the Delta center, but that's fine.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Is it?
- 1:41Speaker 1: Cause I mean, you've talked about it.
- 1:43Speaker 2: It's because it's a super bad underwhelming main event.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And you know, the, look, the main card is so.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Two fights before the main event, Bobby green, who now
- 1:57Speaker 2: goes by King green is taking on a tough Argentine name,
- 2:00Speaker 2: Esteban Arriba, which, and Bobby green. is he's graduated into
- 2:06Speaker 2: the level of being a fighter. And this is kind
- 2:10Speaker 2: of a thing that almost is you almost as unique
- 2:14Speaker 2: to combat sports. King green has graduated to a place
- 2:19Speaker 2: where he's just interesting enough that even if he doesn't
- 2:23Speaker 2: win a ton, they're going to keep him around and
- 2:26Speaker 2: he does win.
- 2:27Speaker 5: Right.
- 2:29Speaker 2: You have to get to a certain level of popularity
- 2:33Speaker 2: and Tom foolery and excited, exciting fight style to where like,
- 2:38Speaker 2: they just like you so much that you're probably never
- 2:42Speaker 2: going to be fighting for a title. They're not even
- 2:44Speaker 2: really matchmaking to push you towards a title. They're just like,
- 2:48Speaker 2: this guy always shows up and puts on a show.
- 2:50Speaker 2: And I don't know what the equivalent of that is
- 2:53Speaker 2: in other sports. I mean, I guess that it's like
- 2:56Speaker 2: the special teamer who's a really good teammate. it's the,
- 3:01Speaker 2: not the sixth man off the bench in, in the NBA.
- 3:04Speaker 2: It's like the eighth man off the bench in the NBA.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Who's like a really good locker room presence. Who's just
- 3:09Speaker 2: a positive thing to have around the organization. Just a
- 3:12Speaker 2: consummate fan favorite.
- 3:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Like someone and that are what their production is. Everyone
- 3:18Speaker 2: cheers for him. Everyone. There's only a few guys that
- 3:20Speaker 2: have achieved that status in the UFC, the spicy tuna
- 3:24Speaker 2: of the UFC. That's a great comparison, right? Like spicy tuna.
- 3:29Speaker 2: His teammates love him. His coaches love him. He is
- 3:31Speaker 2: far from the best skater stick handler. His, his, his
- 3:36Speaker 2: technical knowledge of the game probably.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Isn't where everyone else has been. He's certainly not a
- 3:40Speaker 1: goal scorer. He'll fight, right? He'll do the things he'll
- 3:43Speaker 1: do the dirty work kind of stuff.
- 3:46Speaker 2: We got a guy, Bobby green on the card.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Who's who's that?
- 3:50Speaker 5: Right.
- 3:50Speaker 2: So he's like the, and eight, seven, seven, three, five, three,
- 3:53Speaker 2: zero 700. Tell me who that is in your favorite
- 3:57Speaker 2: sport and your favorite team. It's like, you know, he's
- 3:59Speaker 2: not like a wins above replacement kind of guy. You
- 4:03Speaker 2: know that he's not actually adding a significant amount of
- 4:07Speaker 2: production to your offense, or he's not getting you a
- 4:09Speaker 2: bunch of stats on defense, or he's not a guy
- 4:12Speaker 2: in the NBA. That's going to give you like, 30.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Points a game ever.
- 4:18Speaker 2: He's probably not even going to give you 15 points
- 4:20Speaker 2: a game ever, but he's just a guy where you're like,
- 4:23Speaker 2: I want him on my team.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I want that guy on the roster.
- 4:27Speaker 2: I always like when they interviewed that individual, he has done,
- 4:31Speaker 2: and it's such a difficult thing to do.
- 4:33Speaker 1: There's been a couple of them in the UFC.
- 4:35Speaker 2: There's been a few, And Bobby green also, uh, he
- 4:39Speaker 2: spent some time training with us out here in Utah.
- 4:41Speaker 2: So a little extra affection. If you're looking for someone,
- 4:46Speaker 2: a horse in the race, someone to get behind King
- 4:48Speaker 2: green is one of those guys that you spent some
- 4:50Speaker 2: time out here. Court is going to be done at
- 4:53Speaker 2: 6 30 PM and the whole show is going to
- 4:56Speaker 2: go on. And Yeah.
- 4:58Speaker 1: There's anybody, if.
- 4:59Speaker 3: You're listening and you won UFC tickets at the mammoth
- 5:02Speaker 3: game last night, I mean, those come with strings attached.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You gotta be there for courts fight. You have to
- 5:07Speaker 1: be there for courts fight.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Also, you can go to, you can go to Dave
- 5:12Speaker 2: and busters at the gateway for the, before the drawing tonight,
- 5:16Speaker 2: that that drawing is going to happen tonight. And they're
- 5:19Speaker 2: going to give away some tickets at Dave and busters.
- 5:22Speaker 2: You can go enter your name into the drawing. No
- 5:25Speaker 2: purchase is necessary, but why not stop by Dave and
- 5:27Speaker 2: busters at the gateway, play a couple of games on
- 5:30Speaker 2: your lunch break, sign up for the raffle. They're going
- 5:33Speaker 2: to give away UFC three 32 tickets. And maybe you'll
- 5:36Speaker 2: see bill Riley there. Maybe he's going to join us
- 5:38Speaker 2: on the show today. Elise Sterling is going to join
- 5:41Speaker 2: us on the show today. The number one handicapper in
- 5:43Speaker 2: the business to talk about the picks for the weekend,
- 5:45Speaker 2: where you talk, is not playing Paul Pugmire in the
- 5:49Speaker 2: one o'clock hour to talk about what's going on at
- 5:51Speaker 2: the black desert championship. And we'll, we'll talk about a
- 5:55Speaker 2: big weekend in sports. The biggest story, the headline for
- 5:58Speaker 2: me starting the show today, Utah mammoth hockey back last
- 6:03Speaker 2: night and back with a vengeance back with emphatic statement win.
- 6:09Speaker 2: And I know that there are a lot of people
- 6:11Speaker 2: who are going to do the same thing with the
- 6:12Speaker 2: mammoth right now in this early win that they did
- 6:16Speaker 2: with with Utah's early success with the first four games
- 6:23Speaker 2: of the season. The Chicago Blackhawks are far from the
- 6:27Speaker 2: toughest competition that the Utah Mammoth are going to face
- 6:32Speaker 2: this season. They're an exciting young roster. They're the next
- 6:39Speaker 2: San Jose Sharks, maybe.
- 6:40Speaker 4: They are.
- 6:42Speaker 2: fourth lowest, fourth longest odds to win the Stanley Cup
- 6:46Speaker 2: this year. So that should be an indication for you
- 6:50Speaker 2: of what the world thinks, of what the hockey world
- 6:53Speaker 2: thinks of the Chicago Blackhawks. But the Mammoth took them
- 6:57Speaker 2: behind the proverbial woodshed. This was not close. This was
- 7:03Speaker 2: not friendly. This was not cute. This was not anything
- 7:09Speaker 2: but a good old fashioned booty whooping by the Utah
- 7:13Speaker 2: mammoth who are now want to know after one game,
- 7:19Speaker 2: Dylan Gunther with a couple of goals, Clayton Keller with
- 7:22Speaker 2: a couple of assists, McKenzie Weger with a fight. Dimitri
- 7:26Speaker 2: Simashev looked good. Daniil boot scored a goal and looked good.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Clayton Keller had this gorgeous. He he's in the penalty box.
- 7:35Speaker 2: And he comes out of the penalty box and immediately,
- 7:39Speaker 2: immediately gets the, receives the puck on a pass, tosses
- 7:43Speaker 2: it into the front of the net goal. I mean,
- 7:46Speaker 2: he was back out of the penalty box on the
- 7:48Speaker 2: ice for three seconds, five seconds and immediately back to
- 7:57Speaker 2: producing and creating chances for his team. And that one
- 8:00Speaker 2: happened to lead to a goal. So Big win, 6-0
- 8:07Speaker 2: over the Chicago Blackhawks. And already, already the Utah Mammoth
- 8:16Speaker 2: have a shutout on the books. This is not like
- 8:20Speaker 2: a staple for the Utah Mammoth team. In fact, last
- 8:23Speaker 2: year in the regular season, there were only three. One
- 8:29Speaker 2: was a 7-0 victory against Anaheim. That was veggie and goal.
- 8:36Speaker 2: They blanked the Las Vegas Knights in the regular season.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I think it was 4-0. And they had one on
- 8:42Speaker 2: the road, if I'm not mistaken, in Philadelphia, but that
- 8:45Speaker 2: was Vitek Vanacek in one of his better performances of
- 8:49Speaker 2: the season. So 6-0, new look, Delta Center, glistening new
- 8:57Speaker 2: car smell type of arena once again. And so far,
- 9:02Speaker 2: so good. So respect to the Chicago Blackhawks, but also
- 9:11Speaker 2: you're not on the same level, and you're going to
- 9:13Speaker 2: have to go home and lick some wounds, and good
- 9:15Speaker 2: luck to you.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Now the Mammoth obviously head out on a big road trip.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Five in a row on the road moving forward, and
- 9:25Speaker 2: we'll learn more as the season progresses. At Columbus, at
- 9:28Speaker 2: New York, at New Jersey, at Boston, at Buffalo. before
- 9:32Speaker 2: returning against the Toronto Maple Leafs in mid October, then
- 9:37Speaker 2: back-to-back games against the Edmonton Oilers. One of those is
- 9:41Speaker 2: in Canada. The other one is back here. And then
- 9:44Speaker 2: you welcome the Pittsburgh penguins. So kind of a funky
- 9:48Speaker 2: schedule early where one at home five on the road,
- 9:52Speaker 2: one back at home, then one on the road, then
- 9:54Speaker 2: two back at home, then one on the road, then
- 9:56Speaker 2: two back at home. And then another big road trip.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Now that this sets up nicely when you're really kind
- 10:02Speaker 2: of rounding into things and you get to mid November,
- 10:06Speaker 2: because in mid November, you've got St. Louis, San Jose, Vancouver, Colorado,
- 10:11Speaker 2: and Anaheim all at home before you go back out
- 10:14Speaker 2: on the road. And we'll be watching closely as this
- 10:18Speaker 2: season progresses. The hope is, right, that you're playing the
- 10:22Speaker 2: right kind of hockey, that you're playing in the rhythm
- 10:27Speaker 2: and with the intensity that looks like a playoff, not
- 10:31Speaker 2: only a playoff making team, but a playoff series winning
- 10:33Speaker 2: team when you're getting into February and March. But If
- 10:38Speaker 2: the early indications, if the one game out of 82
- 10:41Speaker 2: sample is anything to judge off of, this is going
- 10:44Speaker 2: to at least be a fun year to watch Utah
- 10:46Speaker 2: Mammoth hockey because they came out ready and absolutely demolished
- 10:52Speaker 2: the Chicago Blackhawks last night. I mean, every statistical category,
- 10:57Speaker 2: the face-offs, they won 75% of their face-offs last night.
- 11:04Speaker 2: The shots on goal, it was not even remotely close.
- 11:09Speaker 2: The time of puck possession, the hits, everything was just
- 11:14Speaker 2: coming up Utah Mammoth. And you don't get it as
- 11:19Speaker 2: cut and dry, as clear all the time when we're
- 11:22Speaker 2: talking about hockey, right? Like even when you're a really
- 11:25Speaker 2: good team playing against a bad team, sometimes there's some
- 11:29Speaker 2: closer margins. But it was.
- 11:34Speaker 1: It was just one way traffic last night.
- 11:36Speaker 2: And it leads me to the conclusion that this is
- 11:39Speaker 2: a Stanley cup winning team in the 2026, 2027 season.
- 11:44Speaker 1: There's no other.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Conclusion that can be drawn from such a dominant performance.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Obviously this means that your Utah mammoth are going to
- 11:53Speaker 2: hoist Lord Stanley's cup. Once we get to next June
- 11:57Speaker 2: and we're all going to feel really good about it.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Metallica will be coming to the rice echo stadium and
- 12:02Speaker 2: you'll be celebrating the a Stanley Cup championship for your
- 12:05Speaker 2: Utah Mammoth.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Can we all agree on it? Good.
- 12:12Speaker 5: 877-353-0700.
- 12:12Speaker 2: If you were at the game last night, if you
- 12:14Speaker 2: watched the game last night, tell me what your favorite
- 12:16Speaker 2: thing about the Mammoth debut was. Tell me the thing
- 12:18Speaker 2: that's got you most fired up for this coming Mammoth season.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Lots to get into today. Some controversy of Bruin in the.
- 12:31Speaker 1: WNBA and the WNBA slate.
- 12:33Speaker 2: We're going to take a look today at as the
- 12:36Speaker 2: regular season, baseball regular season wraps up and we now
- 12:41Speaker 2: have a full season sample size of what the electronic umpires,
- 12:46Speaker 2: the assisted umpire replays, the challenge system. Now we have
- 12:53Speaker 2: kind of a full slate, a full schedule of what
- 12:57Speaker 2: those challenges and overturned or upheld pitches looks like. We'll
- 13:02Speaker 2: look at some of those numbers on the show today.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Another look at what technology is doing for or against
- 13:09Speaker 2: the development of hopefully a sport that you still watch
- 13:13Speaker 2: and pay attention to. I don't know how many people
- 13:15Speaker 2: still do. The Cleveland Browns, who we have some rooting
- 13:19Speaker 2: interest in, at least because of the presence of young
- 13:24Speaker 2: Spencer Fano on that roster.
- 13:26Speaker 1: The Cleveland Browns are three and one.
- 13:28Speaker 2: And Deshaun Watson, 24, 33, 268 yards, one touchdown, one interception,
- 13:36Speaker 2: and led another game-winning drive. That's three on the season
- 13:40Speaker 2: for a guy that a lot of people had written off,
- 13:43Speaker 2: that fans in Cleveland had written off. And obviously... people
- 13:49Speaker 2: around the NFL and people around the sports world had
- 13:52Speaker 2: kind of turned their back on Deshaun Watson and count
- 13:56Speaker 2: me among them. I don't know if Deshaun Watson wins
- 13:59Speaker 2: league MVP this year in a super bowl. I still
- 14:01Speaker 2: don't know if I'm ever going to count myself as
- 14:04Speaker 2: the supporter and the fan that I was when he
- 14:06Speaker 2: was coming out of college football. And we didn't know
- 14:09Speaker 2: about some of his accusations and his alleged proclivities, which
- 14:13Speaker 2: for me are incredibly problematic and things it's, They exist
- 14:16Speaker 2: in a category that I have a very, very difficult
- 14:19Speaker 2: time ignoring or getting over or just being okay with
- 14:23Speaker 2: or shrugging my shoulders at and being like, ah, that
- 14:26Speaker 2: kind of stuff happens.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Ah, we don't know what it's like to be raised.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Like he was raised and nobody says no to him
- 14:32Speaker 2: after the time he's 14 years old and everybody decides
- 14:35Speaker 2: that he's the best football player around. I was trying
- 14:38Speaker 2: to figure out if I, if I could like formulate
- 14:40Speaker 2: a poll question or something. And there's just, I couldn't
- 14:44Speaker 2: find anything that would even remotely come off to be, uh,
- 14:48Speaker 2: in good taste because you know, it's not, there's no
- 14:54Speaker 2: nuance in tweets unless you make it so long that
- 14:57Speaker 2: people aren't going to read it.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Right.
- 15:00Speaker 1: We can have the discussion.
- 15:02Speaker 2: And I want to have the discussion, 877-353-0700, or you
- 15:05Speaker 2: can tweet at me if you'd rather do that, about,
- 15:09Speaker 2: you know, what you're kind of, like, how, what are
- 15:12Speaker 2: we willing to just turn the other cheek on when
- 15:15Speaker 2: it comes to athlete controversy? And how much does their performance,
- 15:20Speaker 2: their ability to win, influence you personally? I'm not talking
- 15:25Speaker 2: about the general public. I'm talking about you personally, me personally.
- 15:29Speaker 2: How much does it alter our willingness to root for
- 15:34Speaker 2: support by a Jersey of somebody that we maybe have
- 15:39Speaker 2: some questions about the kind of person they are. I mean,
- 15:43Speaker 2: we've had this conversation in different contexts over the years,
- 15:47Speaker 2: and I think it's time to do it again because
- 15:50Speaker 2: we're talking about a young quarterback.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Well, he's not as young as he used to be
- 15:54Speaker 1: in the NFL who, I mean.
- 15:58Speaker 2: For all intents and purposes is Most people had stuck
- 16:01Speaker 2: a fork into Sean Watson and said, we're done with you.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Either you're done in the NFL, you're not good enough anymore,
- 16:08Speaker 2: or we're done with you. And then suddenly he starts
- 16:10Speaker 2: to win, he starts to produce, and the narrative may
- 16:14Speaker 2: or may not change on him. I mean, the Cleveland
- 16:20Speaker 2: Browns might still be the Cleveland Browns. The schedule, Jags, Buccaneers, Panthers,
- 16:27Speaker 2: Steelers with... Those last three being wins. They're going to
- 16:31Speaker 2: go on the road against the New York Jets.
- 16:33Speaker 1: They're probably going to win that one.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Maybe we start to figure out some more when they're
- 16:38Speaker 2: playing at home against the Ravens. I mean, there's a
- 16:41Speaker 2: really good chance, based on the schedule, that this Browns
- 16:45Speaker 2: team starts like 6-2, 7-2.
- 16:48Speaker 5: It goes.
- 16:55Speaker 2: At Jets, home against the Ravens, at Titans, at Steelers,
- 16:59Speaker 2: at Saints. They showed us they're good enough to beat
- 17:01Speaker 2: the Steelers. Different environment on the road, obviously. Different equation
- 17:06Speaker 2: on the road. I mean, they don't play against anyone
- 17:10Speaker 2: all that scary, with the exception of the Ravens, until mid-November,
- 17:16Speaker 2: where they'll take on the Houston Texans. And by then,
- 17:18Speaker 2: the Texans, who are abysmally bad right now, should at
- 17:22Speaker 2: least have some things figured out defensively. And if you
- 17:27Speaker 2: beat them, I mean, this, this Cleveland Browns team might
- 17:29Speaker 2: actually be midway through the season, like seven and three,
- 17:36Speaker 2: eight and two. What are we going to be talking
- 17:38Speaker 2: about then? What are you going to say about Deshaun Watson?
- 17:40Speaker 2: Then how much winning does it take for you personally? And,
- 17:47Speaker 2: and then by extension for the, the Royal, we to
- 17:53Speaker 2: kind of get over whatever happened with Deshaun Watson. and say,
- 17:57Speaker 2: all right, he's just one of the best quarterbacks in
- 18:01Speaker 2: the league, or he's one of the most improved quarterbacks
- 18:03Speaker 2: in the league, or, I mean, when does the asterisk
- 18:06Speaker 2: come off? When does the caveat when you're discussing a
- 18:09Speaker 2: player like that get dropped? I'm not a nice person
- 18:17Speaker 2: when it comes to this kind of stuff, so I
- 18:20Speaker 2: don't think I ever forget it. I don't think I
- 18:25Speaker 2: ever like put it out of my mind. I don't think,
- 18:28Speaker 2: and I am probably more in the court of guilty
- 18:36Speaker 2: until proven innocent when it comes to certain kinds of
- 18:38Speaker 2: accusations and the prevalence of those accusations and the sourcing
- 18:44Speaker 2: of those accusations, right? I'm kind of like, all right, that's,
- 18:49Speaker 2: there's too much smoke for there to not be fire,
- 18:51Speaker 2: regardless of whatever a legal system says. And Deshaun Watson,
- 18:55Speaker 2: you're painted with that scarlet letter for me, probably for
- 18:59Speaker 2: the rest of your career. We've, we've given different players
- 19:05Speaker 2: with different histories, different treatment on that.
- 19:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 19:09Speaker 2: I used to, I used to really like, I've always
- 19:11Speaker 2: been a Niners fan. I used to, I used to
- 19:18Speaker 2: enjoy watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens. Cause
- 19:21Speaker 2: I was like, all right, these are AFC teams. So
- 19:24Speaker 2: until the Superbowl, they're not really like enemies of my
- 19:28Speaker 2: San Francisco 49ers. They're not really a team or teams
- 19:32Speaker 2: that I have to worry about too much. And I,
- 19:34Speaker 2: I liked watching, I liked that style of play. I
- 19:36Speaker 2: liked the divisional kind of rivalries that existed there. And
- 19:40Speaker 2: look for a good portion of Ben Roethlisberger's career. I
- 19:45Speaker 2: was like, man, Ben Roethlisberger's awesome. And then the Ben
- 19:48Speaker 2: Roethlisberger stuff came out, and I was just like, ah,
- 19:52Speaker 2: maybe Ben Roethlisberger is not awesome. Maybe I don't want
- 19:55Speaker 2: to root for Ben Roethlisberger. And I don't know Ben Roethlisberger.
- 19:59Speaker 2: I don't know enough about his actual personal life, his.
- 20:03Speaker 1: History, and.
- 20:05Speaker 2: What you should believe and what you shouldn't, and what
- 20:08Speaker 2: kind of like, weight you put into whatever legal decisions
- 20:13Speaker 2: are made here. But when you're talking about someone who's
- 20:19Speaker 2: established a legacy of success and winning our reaction to
- 20:25Speaker 2: accusations or off the field stuff becomes colored in one
- 20:30Speaker 2: way or another. subconsciously or consciously oftentimes we're like, Oh,
- 20:35Speaker 2: you know what, what he would know. I've seen that
- 20:37Speaker 2: guy get, you know, doing the autographs for the kids
- 20:39Speaker 2: and I've seen him winning so many times and his
- 20:41Speaker 2: teammates all love him.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Can't be that bad.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Right.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And conversely on.
- 20:46Speaker 2: The flip side of that equation, when a guy's not
- 20:49Speaker 2: playing well and things are going bad, and then you
- 20:51Speaker 2: hear about bad things off the field, you're like more
- 20:55Speaker 2: apt to believe those things. Hopefully as you're listening, you
- 20:59Speaker 2: can understand why I've had a hard time like creating
- 21:01Speaker 2: a meaningful question or poll question or internet question for
- 21:05Speaker 2: this because it's, there's so many layers to the onion
- 21:10Speaker 2: and every situation is so much different than the previous
- 21:12Speaker 2: situation or the next situation. So I guess what I'm
- 21:16Speaker 2: really talking about right now is with Deshaun Watson, can
- 21:19Speaker 2: he win enough to get people to stop thinking about
- 21:23Speaker 2: worrying about talking about all the things that had us
- 21:26Speaker 2: ready to write him off as a quarterback.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Four games ago? During this preseason.
- 21:33Speaker 3: And like, as a person too, I, I honestly, sincerely
- 21:41Speaker 3: hope not because nothing's come of those of that class,
- 21:49Speaker 3: class action lawsuit that was against him a few years ago.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Now I didn't even, I didn't even know if I've,
- 21:57Speaker 3: heard of a resolution OC. I mean, I assume there
- 21:59Speaker 3: was some kind of settlement or it got dropped or whatever. Um,
- 22:03Speaker 3: but regardless of that, I saw enough at that time.
- 22:09Speaker 3: You had a couple of the victims speak publicly.
- 22:13Speaker 2: There were more than two dozen women that had similar
- 22:19Speaker 2: or nearly identical stories about how they were treated when
- 22:22Speaker 2: they were giving Deshaun Watson a massages. And we're not
- 22:26Speaker 2: going to get into the details of that. There's a
- 22:27Speaker 2: family show, right? But this conduct, like this particular type
- 22:32Speaker 2: of allegation is, is one where I'm like, Oh yikes.
- 22:35Speaker 2: You know, the, the Ray Rice type stuff, the domestic
- 22:38Speaker 2: violence stuff that it again, Antonio.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Brown had some stuff. As he started to lose his mind. Well,
- 22:47Speaker 3: and he lost his mind.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Right.
- 22:49Speaker 2: And like some guys, I mean, I've, I've said this
- 22:51Speaker 2: on the air before the Adrian Peterson stuff was the
- 22:54Speaker 2: stuff that was like, really, I mean, that's my, my
- 22:56Speaker 2: older brother. That was his favorite player. Okay. My older
- 23:00Speaker 2: brother is a Vikings fan. Adrian Peterson was his favorite player.
- 23:04Speaker 2: He went to training camp. He got to interview Adrian Peterson.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Adrian Peterson was like really cool to him, signed a
- 23:11Speaker 2: Jersey for him. And like, The sentiment was, wow, he's
- 23:18Speaker 2: actually a really good guy. They had a conversation about
- 23:21Speaker 2: my younger brother, who you've probably heard us talking about.
- 23:24Speaker 2: My younger brother participates in the Special Olympics. He's special needs.
- 23:28Speaker 2: He participates in the Special Olympics. And that was like
- 23:31Speaker 2: one of the charitable causes. That was kind of the
- 23:32Speaker 2: charitable cause that Adrian Peterson had. sort of made his own.
- 23:39Speaker 2: He gave a lot of money.
- 23:40Speaker 1: He got a lot of.
- 23:41Speaker 2: His own time to the special Olympics. And so like
- 23:44Speaker 2: all in that context, it was, wow, I really liked
- 23:48Speaker 2: this guy. he gives to a cause of his time
- 23:51Speaker 2: and his presence and his financial means that is meaningful
- 23:54Speaker 2: to me, to us. And also he's like, cool. You
- 23:59Speaker 2: get the anecdotal story. Like, Oh, he takes time. Talk
- 24:02Speaker 2: to his fans. He's really friendly.
- 24:04Speaker 1: He's whatever. And of course he's an absolute monster of
- 24:07Speaker 1: a football player.
- 24:08Speaker 2: He's dominant. He's incredible. He's got this reputation of being
- 24:11Speaker 2: a hard worker. And then like a couple of years
- 24:14Speaker 2: after all that, uh, feel good, at least in my
- 24:18Speaker 2: football circle, you get this horrific accusation of treating baby
- 24:24Speaker 2: mama terribly, but more importantly, in my case, treating the
- 24:27Speaker 2: child in a, like, look, I was raised by old
- 24:31Speaker 2: school parents. I'm probably more old school now than most
- 24:34Speaker 2: parents are, but it, it was child abuse. It was,
- 24:39Speaker 2: it was a bridge too far. And there was a
- 24:41Speaker 2: debate all over the internet of like, Oh, you You
- 24:44Speaker 2: people are soft. My parents hit me with a spoon.
- 24:46Speaker 2: My parents whacked me with a switch. My parents had
- 24:49Speaker 2: the belt or whatever else. Well, even if you were
- 24:53Speaker 2: raised in that environment, and even if you turned out fine,
- 24:56Speaker 2: I'm throwing up air quotes. What he did was further
- 24:59Speaker 2: than that. And I was like, wow, I can't get
- 25:01Speaker 2: behind that guy anymore. And I know he's even more
- 25:04Speaker 2: conflicting for my older brother, who was like a real fan,
- 25:07Speaker 2: like an actual fan.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Hey, And that, yeah, so you all, you have these
- 25:13Speaker 3: moments where we find out something dark about our favorite athletes,
- 25:19Speaker 3: personal problems. I mean, uh, Carl Malone, anyone?
- 25:23Speaker 2: Hello.
- 25:24Speaker 3: We'll just leave that there. Um, there's where you have
- 25:28Speaker 3: to kind of try to reconcile. Do I still root
- 25:32Speaker 3: for them as the athlete and acknowledge that? Yeah, they've
- 25:37Speaker 3: done some things that I don't like personally. And that's
- 25:42Speaker 3: what Browns fans are having to face with Deshaun Watson
- 25:45Speaker 3: with certain things.
- 25:47Speaker 1: I think we're aligned.
- 25:48Speaker 3: There are certain things OC and what Deshaun Watson was
- 25:52Speaker 3: accused of by like, like you said, over two dozen,
- 25:55Speaker 3: like 30 women. And we saw publicly some of these
- 25:59Speaker 3: women speak up. We could see like, we could see
- 26:03Speaker 3: how sincere they were about their story. Like that was
- 26:08Speaker 3: enough for me a few years ago to be like, no,
- 26:11Speaker 3: I'm never rooting for that guy, and I'm always going
- 26:14Speaker 3: to be mad at the Browns for after all that
- 26:16Speaker 3: came out.
- 26:17Speaker 1: For giving him the contract they gave him. Insane contract.
- 26:19Speaker 2: And by the way, the rest of the NFL was
- 26:23Speaker 2: also mad at the Browns for that.
- 26:25Speaker 1: On multiple levels.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Because they cared more about the fact that it was
- 26:29Speaker 2: a fully guaranteed deal.
- 26:30Speaker 1: But also, they were like, what are we doing here?
- 26:33Speaker 2: This is the kind of stuff that we as owners
- 26:35Speaker 2: have been able to use to devalue player contracts. The
- 26:38Speaker 2: off-the-field controversies. And you guys are just ignoring everything. This
- 26:42Speaker 2: is another.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Good text from... from Derek.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Um, a lot of people can get over stuff if
- 26:46Speaker 2: they play for your team, would you lose your fandom
- 26:49Speaker 2: for the Niners? If Fred Ward or McCaffrey were caught
- 26:52Speaker 2: up in this kind of thing, it might be a
- 26:53Speaker 2: harder question to ask outside the fandom.
- 26:56Speaker 1: That's a really, okay. So we we've dealt with this.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Okay. We have seen this with our Utes. You've seen mild, mild,
- 27:04Speaker 2: mild alone. Anyone you've, you've seen mild versions of that
- 27:08Speaker 2: with the Utah jazz, uh, in more recent years. And
- 27:11Speaker 2: then like, It's the hardest thing to reconcile for the
- 27:14Speaker 2: jazz fan base. The Karl Malone stuff is the most
- 27:17Speaker 2: difficult thing to reconcile. And I know this for a fact,
- 27:23Speaker 2: even though we can't actually know it for a fact.
- 27:25Speaker 2: If Karl Malone were playing in this day and age,
- 27:28Speaker 2: in the social media day and age, and everybody had
- 27:32Speaker 2: the voice that they have now, Carl Malone would be
- 27:35Speaker 2: viewed in very, very, very differently in contemporary basketball than
- 27:40Speaker 2: he was in the career that he actually played in.
- 27:42Speaker 1: And you know what?
- 27:43Speaker 2: I'm not here to tell you how to feel about it,
- 27:47Speaker 2: even to tell James how to feel about it.
- 27:48Speaker 1: I'm just acknowledging that to get back to Derek's text.
- 27:52Speaker 2: It's really interesting to me because if you, if Fred Warner,
- 27:56Speaker 2: who is like the last guy that I think would
- 27:59Speaker 2: ever be involved in anything like this, if Fred Warner
- 28:01Speaker 2: were involved in something like this, it would make me
- 28:04Speaker 2: feel some type of way about Fred Warner. And I would,
- 28:08Speaker 2: because I'm a huge Fred Warner fan. Like I would,
- 28:11Speaker 2: I would wear a Fred Warner Jersey. I'm getting rid
- 28:14Speaker 2: of that thing. If the Deshaun Watson stuff is attached
- 28:17Speaker 2: to Fred Warner or to Christian McCaffrey, if then the
- 28:20Speaker 2: San Francisco 49ers decide to ignore it, and decide to,
- 28:26Speaker 2: we're still going to make Fred Warner the highest paid
- 28:28Speaker 2: linebacker in the league. For me personally, that becomes problematic
- 28:32Speaker 2: because I still care about this stuff. And there's a
- 28:37Speaker 2: lot of sports fans who don't. They're like, look, the
- 28:40Speaker 2: winning and the money and the morality are all separate
- 28:43Speaker 2: things now. I still come from a spot as a fan,
- 28:48Speaker 2: even though I'm jaded because I work in sports media
- 28:51Speaker 2: and I spent a brief time as a professional athlete myself.
- 28:54Speaker 2: to know that like what really matters is who's pushing
- 28:58Speaker 2: the money and who's helping you win. But if my
- 29:00Speaker 2: San Francisco 49ers or the Utah mammoth or the Utah
- 29:05Speaker 2: jazz or my Minnesota twins were just like, yeah, we don't,
- 29:10Speaker 2: we don't get like Kirby pocket has a complicated legacy.
- 29:13Speaker 2: When I was a little kid, I thought Kirby pocket
- 29:16Speaker 2: was the coolest thing going. This pudgy little, like that
- 29:20Speaker 2: guy who ran funny also was the best baseball player
- 29:23Speaker 2: in the league and helped my team win. win a championship.
- 29:25Speaker 2: I was like, Kirby pocket is the man. And then
- 29:27Speaker 2: you get a little bit older and you're just like, Oh,
- 29:29Speaker 2: maybe he's not.
- 29:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:30Speaker 1: And that sucks.
- 29:32Speaker 2: But in the case of Deshaun Watson and the modern
- 29:36Speaker 2: NFL and the modern NBA, the modern NHL and modern
- 29:39Speaker 2: major league baseball, where, you know, a lot more than
- 29:42Speaker 2: you did when you were a kid. And even if
- 29:45Speaker 2: you were an adult in those times, you know, more
- 29:48Speaker 2: now because of the ubiquity of information and the ability
- 29:52Speaker 2: for all of us to find out everything, does it
- 29:54Speaker 2: affect it for you?
- 29:56Speaker 1: Does it affect like Spencer Fano?
- 29:58Speaker 4: No.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Wanting to plug Spencer Fano and the final family. They're
- 30:02Speaker 2: incredible people.
- 30:03Speaker 4: Okay.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Does it affect the kind of friendship he can have
- 30:08Speaker 2: with his starting quarterback?
- 30:09Speaker 4: I imagine.
- 30:10Speaker 6: Yes.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Now, Maybe the right thing to do is to forgive,
- 30:15Speaker 1: to forget.
- 30:15Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 30:17Speaker 4: For me.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Just focus on doing your job like I get paid
- 30:19Speaker 2: to protect this guy and that's it. Because you can't
- 30:22Speaker 2: adjudicate that. You don't get to adjudicate that as a player.
- 30:27Speaker 2: But man, it's complicated. And Deshaun Watson is on the
- 30:31Speaker 2: precipice right now of... playing his way into a category
- 30:35Speaker 2: where I think the media is going to start ignoring
- 30:39Speaker 2: all of that.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Stuff and just talking about who he is as a player.
- 30:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:44Speaker 2: And that's going to be weird. If I'm being honest,
- 30:46Speaker 2: we got to take a break to stay on clock.
- 30:48Speaker 2: I want to get to bill Riley. We'll talk about
- 30:51Speaker 2: the Utes. We'll stay focused on the Utes. Also we'll
- 30:54Speaker 2: get into the other big 12 games. What's got his
- 30:57Speaker 2: interest in the world of college football this weekend. We're
- 31:00Speaker 2: getting started on a Friday. It's the Sean O'Connell show
- 31:02Speaker 2: on ESPN 700. 92.1 FM.
- 31:09Speaker 6: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 31:12Speaker 6: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Not every guest on the show has their own entrance music,
- 31:33Speaker 2: but when you hear this one, you know who's coming on.
- 31:36Speaker 2: It's the voice of the youth, Bill Riley, giving us
- 31:39Speaker 2: some more time here on a Friday that also happens
- 31:41Speaker 2: to be a bye week. So as much of an
- 31:44Speaker 2: off weekend as he's going to get in a football season.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Bill, welcome to the show.
- 31:48Speaker 2: How are you?
- 31:49Speaker 7: Sean, I'm great. Thanks for the intro music.
- 31:52Speaker 4: Love it.
- 31:54Speaker 2: All right, so bye week for the University of Utah.
- 31:58Speaker 2: How does Morgan Scali and this crew win the bye week?
- 32:02Speaker 2: How did they, if the week is mostly done?
- 32:06Speaker 7: I would guess they just worked on things that needed
- 32:08Speaker 7: cleaning up. I mean, you're 4-0, you're in pretty good shape,
- 32:11Speaker 7: but nobody's perfect right now. So I would guess they
- 32:14Speaker 7: probably worked on some things, probably cleaning up a few
- 32:18Speaker 7: things defensively, probably maybe trying to work on getting a
- 32:21Speaker 7: little bit more pressure with those edge defenders, maybe working
- 32:24Speaker 7: on some run fits a little bit more because I
- 32:27Speaker 7: think as the season goes along, they're going to face
- 32:29Speaker 7: more and more talented teams. What they faced in the
- 32:31Speaker 7: first four games was, you know, there were a couple
- 32:34Speaker 7: of solid teams in there. Nobody's spectacular. And come late
- 32:38Speaker 7: October and throughout the month of November, it's going to
- 32:40Speaker 7: get tougher. I'd say probably on the offensive side, maybe
- 32:43Speaker 7: just cleaning up some little things, getting some more reps in.
- 32:45Speaker 7: But it's hard to argue with what Kevin McGiven's offense
- 32:48Speaker 7: has done. You could nitpick a little bit and say
- 32:50Speaker 7: maybe some slow starts in the second half, but they're
- 32:52Speaker 7: still one of the top two or three offenses in
- 32:54Speaker 7: the Big 12 Conference by whatever metric you want to
- 32:56Speaker 7: look at. So I would just say probably cleaning up
- 32:59Speaker 7: little things. And to be fair, we always talk about
- 33:01Speaker 7: bi-weeks getting healthy. The one good thing so far for
- 33:05Speaker 7: this Utah football team has been the fact that they've
- 33:08Speaker 7: been relatively healthy. They haven't had any major injuries.
- 33:11Speaker 2: We have been very persnickety on the show this week because...
- 33:15Speaker 2: When you're a 4-0 football team and it's not easy
- 33:18Speaker 2: to point out, well, you've got to fix this.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Oh, you've got to do this better. You did just
- 33:23Speaker 1: allude to it.
- 33:24Speaker 2: The second half, the start of the second half, third
- 33:27Speaker 2: quarters have been, if there is a weak moment, if
- 33:32Speaker 2: there is a lull for this team, it's been in
- 33:35Speaker 2: the third quarter. They've given up the most points per
- 33:38Speaker 2: quarter in their four-game sample size in the third quarter.
- 33:43Speaker 2: and they've scored the fewest points in their own third
- 33:46Speaker 2: quarters when.
- 33:47Speaker 1: They've got the ball.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Is there anything that you can see that explains that,
- 33:53Speaker 2: or that would be easy to go into practice this
- 33:55Speaker 2: week and say, all right, guys, we've identified this as
- 33:58Speaker 2: a minor problem. Here's how we're going to fix it.
- 34:01Speaker 7: Well, maybe last week you might say, well, you know,
- 34:03Speaker 7: way Sean Parker was having himself a really nice day
- 34:06Speaker 7: and maybe a few more touches there, but you know,
- 34:09Speaker 7: it's hard to nitpick Kevin McGiven's offense because it's been
- 34:12Speaker 7: so good.
- 34:13Speaker 4: In that first half.
- 34:14Speaker 7: I don't know myself, Sean, if it's an intensity or
- 34:17Speaker 7: a focus thing or, you know, defense is making adjustments,
- 34:21Speaker 7: but for whatever reason, the third quarters have looked different
- 34:25Speaker 7: in the Utah state and the, in the Iowa state game.
- 34:28Speaker 7: So I, I, Again, numbers say one thing. I don't
- 34:33Speaker 7: know what the core issue.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Is with it.
- 34:36Speaker 7: I just know that they haven't been quite as effective
- 34:39Speaker 7: in that third quarter as they have in the first two.
- 34:43Speaker 2: I tried to figure it out on the show earlier
- 34:45Speaker 2: in the week, and part of it might just be
- 34:47Speaker 2: human nature. Part of it might just be that you
- 34:50Speaker 2: know that you've got a three-score lead coming out of
- 34:52Speaker 2: the half, and it's hard to amp yourself up to
- 34:55Speaker 2: an equal measure or whatever. Also, you've got to give
- 34:58Speaker 2: credit to other teams in some cases like this. If
- 35:01Speaker 2: you go into halftime and you're down two scores or
- 35:05Speaker 2: three scores, you're going to come out blazing in the
- 35:08Speaker 2: second half knowing that, hey, we have to correct this
- 35:11Speaker 2: now because if we don't, we're going to run out
- 35:13Speaker 2: of time to do so. I think it's nothing overly alarming,
- 35:17Speaker 2: but it is something that I think we identified. You
- 35:20Speaker 2: also talked about maybe getting more pressure from those defensive ends,
- 35:24Speaker 2: from the edge rushers.
- 35:26Speaker 1: I've been trying to be a little bit more.
- 35:28Speaker 2: Careful how I talk about this because like they're affecting
- 35:32Speaker 2: quarterback play. Lance holds right on Ethan day and cash
- 35:36Speaker 2: Dylan and Paul Fitzgerald. They're affecting what the other quarterback does.
- 35:39Speaker 2: They just don't, they're not piling up the stats. They're
- 35:42Speaker 2: not creating sack fumbles. They're not creating sacks as of
- 35:45Speaker 2: this moment. So it's one of those things where it's like, well,
- 35:48Speaker 2: you're doing 90% of the job. That final 10%, how
- 35:51Speaker 2: do we get there? I don't know how big of
- 35:54Speaker 2: a problem it is or how big of an issue
- 35:56Speaker 2: it is that you're not getting a bunch of sacks because, again,
- 35:59Speaker 2: we're being nitpicky here, but how do they get from
- 36:04Speaker 2: where they're at now to getting that quarterback down to
- 36:06Speaker 2: the ground?
- 36:08Speaker 7: That's a good question because, again, you're right. I mean,
- 36:10Speaker 7: they are getting pressures of batting a lot of balls
- 36:12Speaker 7: down at the line of scrimmage, too. Lance Holtzclaw's got
- 36:14Speaker 7: a bunch of those this year. And Ethan Day's been
- 36:17Speaker 7: really good at pressuring the quarterback. I just look at
- 36:21Speaker 7: it and think it's just a little odd when you think,
- 36:24Speaker 7: Your defensive tackles have three sacks. Your defensive ends have none.
- 36:28Speaker 7: You've got 10 as a team, but none from the edges.
- 36:31Speaker 7: And again, some of that could be scheme. This is
- 36:33Speaker 7: very unusual for Utah, a team that's always had great
- 36:36Speaker 7: defensive end plays, you know, four games in not to
- 36:39Speaker 7: have one. That's not to say it won't come. And
- 36:42Speaker 7: to your point, they are getting pressure. They are harassing
- 36:45Speaker 7: the quarterback. They are doing some really nice things. you know,
- 36:48Speaker 7: I just, I think that if you probably talk to
- 36:50Speaker 7: an LK Brechterfield, he'd probably like to see a couple
- 36:53Speaker 7: of his guys get that quarterback down to the ground.
- 36:55Speaker 7: But to your point too, sometimes pressures can be every
- 37:00Speaker 7: bit as good as the sack itself. Pressure can force
- 37:03Speaker 7: an incomplete pass. A pressure can force an interception. And
- 37:07Speaker 7: they're getting those. The one thing I will say is
- 37:09Speaker 7: I think the defensive tackle play has been much improved
- 37:12Speaker 7: this year. Jai Mo has been a revelation for this team.
- 37:16Speaker 7: Bronson Kofusi has been really, really good, too. Lucas Samsula
- 37:22Speaker 7: has flashed. Pupu Sepulona has flashed. but I would say
- 37:25Speaker 7: compared to a year ago, maybe they're not quite getting
- 37:28Speaker 7: the production on the end that they had with a
- 37:30Speaker 7: Logan Fano or a John Henry Taley, but I think
- 37:33Speaker 7: they're getting maybe better production than they got a year
- 37:36Speaker 7: ago on the interior.
- 37:38Speaker 2: The defensive backfield is, by some metrics, the best defensive
- 37:43Speaker 2: backfield in all of college football right now with their
- 37:46Speaker 2: success rate. And by the way, they've dropped– or almost
- 37:52Speaker 2: had like another five interceptions over, over what they've had.
- 37:55Speaker 1: You got one robbed by the officials last week.
- 37:57Speaker 2: I'm like, man, what would their grade would be an
- 38:00Speaker 2: even 100 or a 99.9. If they would have caught
- 38:03Speaker 2: all the interceptions that were available to them. But that
- 38:06Speaker 2: unit obviously has done an incredible job and no surprise
- 38:10Speaker 2: when we're talking about Sharif Shah, but, but coach Odom
- 38:13Speaker 2: comes back onto this staff and, And immediately the safeties,
- 38:16Speaker 2: I mean, Nate Ritchie's playing better football than he ever has.
- 38:19Speaker 2: I think we got to give him, the players certainly
- 38:21Speaker 2: get credit, but I think Coach Odom gets credit as well.
- 38:24Speaker 7: Why I agree with all of that, Sean. The safety
- 38:26Speaker 7: room's always good for Utah. I think a big part
- 38:28Speaker 7: of it for Nate is he's healthy. I mean, Nate
- 38:31Speaker 7: Ritchie has battled injuries throughout his career in Utah. He
- 38:34Speaker 7: is finally healthy. He, Jackson, Benny, Rabbit Evans, I'll even
- 38:38Speaker 7: throw Nate Tillman's been good. when he's gotten in there
- 38:42Speaker 7: this year, you knew Scooby Davis was a really good
- 38:45Speaker 7: corner on one side. They go to the portal the
- 38:47Speaker 7: way they did a year ago. And I mean, they
- 38:50Speaker 7: had two guys in the portal that are just rotating
- 38:52Speaker 7: and doing great work for them and Bobo Chenault and
- 38:55Speaker 7: Elijah Reed. So the back, I think it's fair to
- 38:58Speaker 7: say the back end of that defense has been a huge,
- 39:02Speaker 7: huge plus for them this year. And, you know, I
- 39:05Speaker 7: think the backers have been solid. In fact, I think
- 39:07Speaker 7: the young backers and Elijah Ellis and Cyrus Paul, who
- 39:10Speaker 7: have been really good, you know, Trey Reynolds and John
- 39:13Speaker 7: Hall have been good too. But, you know, the defense, again,
- 39:17Speaker 7: when you're 4-0, you've got to buy a week. It's
- 39:18Speaker 7: easy to look at some things. They've been really, really good.
- 39:22Speaker 7: But I probably have been most impressed on that whole
- 39:24Speaker 7: defensive unit with the tackles because I didn't know what
- 39:28Speaker 7: to make of a lot of new guys coming in.
- 39:30Speaker 7: and that safety room.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Bill Riley, voice of the Utes, our guest here on
- 39:33Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell Show, talking all things Utes during their
- 39:36Speaker 2: bye week. No game this weekend. They'll be back against
- 39:40Speaker 2: Kansas next week. We'll get to that here in just
- 39:43Speaker 2: a second. Are we ready to stop wondering about the
- 39:47Speaker 2: offensive line? I mean, four games is a big chunk.
- 39:51Speaker 2: It's not a full season. And we still have had
- 39:54Speaker 2: plenty of rotation in these first four games. But they've
- 39:58Speaker 2: played well. And guys, as individual performers, I think are
- 40:01Speaker 2: starting to prove some things, not only to Jordan Gross.
- 40:04Speaker 2: and Kevin McGibbon, but to everyone who's observing this offensive line. Still,
- 40:09Speaker 2: where are we at on the spectrum of, well, let's
- 40:12Speaker 2: wait and see, or we're still questioning you?
- 40:15Speaker 7: I'm not waiting and seeing anymore. I'm not questioning them.
- 40:19Speaker 7: I think they're good. Now the question is, what's their ceiling?
- 40:22Speaker 7: I think this is a good offensive line, Sean. I
- 40:25Speaker 7: think we saw a lot of rotating early. I'd be
- 40:27Speaker 7: surprised if games are close, if we see much rotating.
- 40:30Speaker 7: I kind of feel like they have found five guys
- 40:33Speaker 7: they like. That's not to say they don't have a
- 40:35Speaker 7: couple of other guys that they can squeeze in there
- 40:37Speaker 7: as well. But I think they have kind of found
- 40:39Speaker 7: five guys that they like with the ability to rotate
- 40:42Speaker 7: guys in if needed. But I thought this was going
- 40:45Speaker 7: to be a good offensive line, talking to some of
- 40:48Speaker 7: the guys this summer and Jordan Gross and Kevin McGiven.
- 40:51Speaker 7: I think through four games, everybody was worried. I don't
- 40:57Speaker 7: think there's anything to be worried about. Again, competition is
- 41:00Speaker 7: going to get better. I get all of that stuff.
- 41:02Speaker 7: But Zeroway Williams looks like a Caleb Lomu right now.
- 41:07Speaker 7: He looks like one of those guys out there, the
- 41:10Speaker 7: great footwork, the athleticism. And really, with Zeroway Williams, it
- 41:15Speaker 7: was never about ability. It was about people in front
- 41:19Speaker 7: of him and or health. He's been terrific this year.
- 41:21Speaker 7: I think the freshman Obot's been great. Alex Harrison, the
- 41:25Speaker 7: middle of that line, kind of quarterbacking at center. I
- 41:28Speaker 7: think they really, really like Cedric Jefferson, too, the kid
- 41:32Speaker 7: from Montana State who won a national championship last year
- 41:34Speaker 7: at the right tackle spot. But I think they feel
- 41:37Speaker 7: good about some guys that they've got in there now.
- 41:38Speaker 7: So I'm not worried about it. I think that there's
- 41:42Speaker 7: a lot more upside to this offensive line. But I
- 41:45Speaker 7: think if this, for whatever reason, let's just say this
- 41:48Speaker 7: was the best it was going to be this year,
- 41:50Speaker 7: I think this is a good offensive line.
- 41:52Speaker 2: I'm glad you mentioned Zaraway Williams because, as you know,
- 41:56Speaker 2: My guy, Jeff Schwartz, who you've talked to plenty, he's
- 42:00Speaker 2: he's involved in like a lot of that evaluation. Joe
- 42:03Speaker 2: Moore award voting the pre NFL draft scouting of offensive lineman.
- 42:08Speaker 2: He goes and does the big man camp with his
- 42:10Speaker 2: buddy Duke and gets a lot of those guys ready.
- 42:12Speaker 2: The offensive line version of like a Manning camp or whatever.
- 42:16Speaker 2: And zero way Williams has entered their group chat. Zero
- 42:19Speaker 2: way is now being talked about. It's like, Hey, where
- 42:21Speaker 2: was this guy? And then of course they all know
- 42:23Speaker 2: because they follow the offensive lines. Like, Oh yeah, he
- 42:25Speaker 2: was playing behind a first round draft pick. It's a
- 42:30Speaker 2: testament to the culture of Utah football that he's still there.
- 42:34Speaker 2: and that he didn't take the easy route and transfer
- 42:36Speaker 2: and get out of there when he had an opportunity,
- 42:37Speaker 2: and he did have opportunities. But also, it's a huge
- 42:40Speaker 2: testament to Zeroway as a person. Being a backup is
- 42:44Speaker 2: not easy, especially when you're a 6'8'' monstrosity with starter caliber, athleticism,
- 42:51Speaker 2: and technique, and he bided his time. He sat behind
- 42:54Speaker 2: guys that I'm sure helped make him better, and now
- 42:57Speaker 2: it looks like Utah and he individually could be reaping
- 43:00Speaker 2: the rewards for this. It's kind of a feel-good story
- 43:03Speaker 2: in college football that doesn't get told all that often
- 43:06Speaker 2: anymore because it's, what can you do for me right now?
- 43:10Speaker 7: Same thing with Alex Harrison. Same thing with a guy
- 43:12Speaker 7: like Keith Olson. I mean, these guys have all been
- 43:15Speaker 7: in the program four and five years, and they've bided
- 43:18Speaker 7: their time behind guys that were in front of them. Sean,
- 43:20Speaker 7: I'm old enough to remember. You're borderline old enough to
- 43:23Speaker 7: remember those great Nebraska offensive lines of the 80s and 90s.
- 43:29Speaker 7: The Cornhuskers were the first people that really used the
- 43:31Speaker 7: red shirt big time. They'd bring those guys in. They'd
- 43:34Speaker 7: put them in that world-class weight room. They'd red shirt
- 43:37Speaker 7: them for a couple of years. Those guys, a lot
- 43:40Speaker 7: of them didn't play till they were juniors or seniors.
- 43:43Speaker 7: And this was before fifth and sixth year stuff. But
- 43:45Speaker 7: I mean, you had to earn your time. You got bigger,
- 43:47Speaker 7: you got stronger, you learned the system. And then those
- 43:50Speaker 7: guys were all Americans in a year and they were
- 43:53Speaker 7: playing in the NFL the next year. I think we've
- 43:56Speaker 7: just gotten so used to college football today where guys
- 44:00Speaker 7: either play as freshmen and start as freshmen because they're
- 44:03Speaker 7: so highly touted and they're worried if they're going to
- 44:04Speaker 7: transfer or they stay in a program two or three
- 44:07Speaker 7: years and if they don't play, then they transfer that way.
- 44:10Speaker 7: I think if you're looking at the big picture of
- 44:11Speaker 7: the history of college football, Zeroway Williams and some of
- 44:15Speaker 7: these guys have kind of followed the natural progression of
- 44:18Speaker 7: how it kind of used to be and getting bigger
- 44:20Speaker 7: and learning. And then when you get your opportunity, you
- 44:23Speaker 7: thrive because you're ready to go.
- 44:26Speaker 2: I can't believe I've abdicated my responsibility. We made it
- 44:29Speaker 2: 15 minutes into a conversation, and I have yet to
- 44:32Speaker 2: mention the quarterback. And Devin Dampier, obviously, is massively important
- 44:36Speaker 2: to what this team is doing. Bert Ficklin is just
- 44:38Speaker 2: behind him. Backup's not even the right word. It's like
- 44:42Speaker 2: his sidekick quarterback. And Kevin McGiven's done a masterful job
- 44:46Speaker 2: of getting them all touches and things like that. But
- 44:51Speaker 2: Devin's grading out incredibly well. He compares very well with
- 44:54Speaker 2: not only other quarterbacks, in the big 12 conference, but nationally,
- 44:57Speaker 2: a lot of people think he's a top 15, top
- 45:00Speaker 2: 20 style quarterback could be even better than that. And
- 45:03Speaker 2: if he maintains this pace, it feels like the ceiling
- 45:06Speaker 2: is incredibly high for this team.
- 45:08Speaker 1: Am I missing anything?
- 45:09Speaker 7: I don't think so. I mean, I think Devin just
- 45:12Speaker 7: looks much more comfortable this year. One, he's healthy. He
- 45:16Speaker 7: hasn't suffered a real debilitating injury like he did early
- 45:20Speaker 7: in the season last year against Texas Tech. So I
- 45:23Speaker 7: think he feels good. I think he trusts his offensive line.
- 45:27Speaker 7: Maybe it's not the line it was a year ago,
- 45:29Speaker 7: but I think he's another year more mature as a starter, Sean.
- 45:33Speaker 7: I think he was at New Mexico having to be Superman, right?
- 45:37Speaker 7: And then I think there was still a little bit
- 45:39Speaker 7: of that tendency a year ago to where I've got
- 45:42Speaker 7: to make the spectacular play. I've got to add lib.
- 45:45Speaker 7: And I think being a little bit more mature another
- 45:48Speaker 7: year in the system, being with Kevin McGiven, but also
- 45:51Speaker 7: being surrounded by the cast that he's got, whether it's
- 45:54Speaker 7: Ficklin or Parker or Bray or Pagan or Johnson or
- 45:58Speaker 7: Whitamore or Hunter, you name them. There's just so much
- 46:03Speaker 7: there around him that I don't feel like Devin, because
- 46:05Speaker 7: he did it in New Mexico, and maybe he did
- 46:08Speaker 7: last year a little bit when they weren't running it.
- 46:11Speaker 7: I get a sense that he just feels– you talk.
- 46:14Speaker 4: To him every week.
- 46:15Speaker 7: I don't know what kind of sense you get, but
- 46:16Speaker 7: I just– when I've been around him, and then obviously
- 46:19Speaker 7: when I call the games, he just looks very comfortable
- 46:24Speaker 7: running the show.
- 46:26Speaker 2: I think comfortable in everything is why he's– Off the field,
- 46:30Speaker 2: I think he's more comfortable. I think he's got a
- 46:32Speaker 2: really good situation with his management team, and his teammates
- 46:36Speaker 2: love him, and he loves his coaches. I think that
- 46:39Speaker 2: we now know that his success is because of himself
- 46:42Speaker 2: and not just his attachment to Jason Peck, which might
- 46:46Speaker 2: have been something that people weighed in. I don't know.
- 46:48Speaker 2: It's really interesting to try to pinpoint the reasons why,
- 46:53Speaker 2: but it kind of doesn't matter. He's just playing great football.
- 46:56Speaker 2: And it's fun to watch and hopefully continues to be
- 46:58Speaker 2: fun to watch. And he can stay as healthy as
- 47:00Speaker 2: he is right now.
- 47:02Speaker 7: Let me ask you, let me ask you a question.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Okay.
- 47:05Speaker 7: Because people ask me this all the time, but I'm
- 47:07Speaker 7: going to ask you four games, almost a month of football,
- 47:11Speaker 7: not great competition, solid competition. What's the big question you
- 47:16Speaker 7: still have.
- 47:17Speaker 1: About this Utah football team?
- 47:19Speaker 6: Yes.
- 47:20Speaker 2: It's literally, can they sustain it when they play? a
- 47:24Speaker 2: Houston caliber opponent, a BYU caliber opponent. And there's nothing
- 47:28Speaker 2: that tells me they can't. It's like, can you play
- 47:31Speaker 2: this level of football against teams that are your equal
- 47:35Speaker 2: from a physical talent standpoint and from a coaching standpoint?
- 47:39Speaker 2: Right now, they haven't had to answer that question. They
- 47:41Speaker 2: have not played anyone who is across the board as
- 47:44Speaker 2: physically talented as they are and is across the board
- 47:47Speaker 2: as well coached as they are. They are beating up
- 47:50Speaker 2: on lesser than right now, and my only question, and
- 47:53Speaker 2: it's kind of a minor one, and it's one that
- 47:55Speaker 2: exists for every team every single year. Can you play
- 47:58Speaker 2: this well when you're against somebody who is your equal
- 48:02Speaker 2: or maybe someone who's even a little bit more talented
- 48:04Speaker 2: than you? That is the question I have now, and
- 48:06Speaker 2: I think you're only going to really get to answer
- 48:09Speaker 2: that question in maybe two games, three games of the
- 48:12Speaker 2: regular season. Well, I think it's Houston. I think it's BYU.
- 48:18Speaker 7: I think maybe it's Arizona going down to Arizona. I
- 48:23Speaker 7: don't know what to make of Cincinnati yet. I know
- 48:26Speaker 7: they're 4-0. I know they beat Kansas State last week.
- 48:30Speaker 7: Kansas State hadn't played anybody. Maybe Cincinnati's sneaky good. I
- 48:33Speaker 7: would also maybe throw TCU or West Virginia in there
- 48:37Speaker 7: that month of November. West Virginia kind of fell back
- 48:41Speaker 7: to earth a little bit at home last week, gagging
- 48:43Speaker 7: on that lead. I think this is a big week
- 48:45Speaker 7: for both BYU and TCU. One for BYU, they take
- 48:49Speaker 7: the show on the road. One for TCU, hey man,
- 48:53Speaker 7: you've lost twice this year. If you're going to be
- 48:55Speaker 7: a good team, you kind of have to do it
- 48:57Speaker 7: at home. But I agree with you.
- 48:59Speaker 4: I agree.
- 49:00Speaker 7: And to be fair, I thought a year ago for
- 49:03Speaker 7: three quarters against Texas Tech, they were right there. And
- 49:07Speaker 7: I think Devin being banged up in that game really
- 49:11Speaker 7: showed the defense got worn down in the fourth quarter.
- 49:14Speaker 7: The BYU game, to me, Utah was their equal, except
- 49:18Speaker 7: for they beat themselves. with no conversions on fourth down,
- 49:23Speaker 7: and the fumble hurt them, too. But I thought that
- 49:25Speaker 7: they were right there with the two teams that played
- 49:28Speaker 7: for the conference championship. So I'm with you. I think
- 49:31Speaker 7: this season's very much a continuation of last season, but
- 49:35Speaker 7: I think this team's maybe got a higher ceiling offensively
- 49:39Speaker 7: than last year's team did.
- 49:40Speaker 2: Which is such a wild thing to say because you
- 49:43Speaker 2: had the fourth best rushing attack in college football last year.
- 49:47Speaker 7: So, well, I mean, it was the quietest 11 and
- 49:50Speaker 7: two season ever.
- 49:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:51Speaker 7: I mean, what they missed by two spots, three spots,
- 49:54Speaker 7: they missed the big, they missed the big 12 championship
- 49:57Speaker 7: game by one or two fourth down conversions. I mean,
- 50:00Speaker 7: it's more, maybe if you just opt to kick field
- 50:02Speaker 7: goals there instead, you're playing in the big 12 championship game. Anyway,
- 50:05Speaker 7: we can always litigate that back. But my point was,
- 50:08Speaker 7: I think people have forgotten and I've gone on some
- 50:10Speaker 7: national shows and talked about it. They were a really,
- 50:13Speaker 7: really good 11 and two team a year ago.
- 50:17Speaker 2: And now they've got a reinvigorated, even better version of
- 50:22Speaker 2: way Sean Parker. And this will be the last thing
- 50:23Speaker 2: that we talked about bill, but he's right now, he's
- 50:27Speaker 2: the best player on this football team. And there's a
- 50:28Speaker 2: lot of really good players on this football team. How
- 50:32Speaker 2: close are we to way Sean being in the conversation
- 50:36Speaker 2: with the Zach Mosses and the fast Eddie Johnson's and
- 50:39Speaker 2: the Devante bookers and a bunch of the great guys
- 50:42Speaker 2: that have rolled through this position at the university of Utah.
- 50:44Speaker 7: Well, I didn't know when he came in the program
- 50:48Speaker 7: if he was an NFL back. He looked like a
- 50:50Speaker 7: good college back to me. You watch him this year,
- 50:54Speaker 7: he's an NFL back. And NFL scouts that have come
- 50:57Speaker 7: and watched him play have said the same thing about
- 50:59Speaker 7: Wayshawn Parker. He doesn't have a deficiency in his game, Sean.
- 51:02Speaker 7: He runs. He's got great burst. He's got great vision.
- 51:05Speaker 7: He breaks tackles. He catches the ball, as we've seen,
- 51:09Speaker 7: exceedingly well out of the backfield. He's really good in
- 51:12Speaker 7: the open field. And maybe the thing that NFL guys
- 51:16Speaker 7: love the most is his pass protection is silly. His
- 51:20Speaker 7: blitz pickup and his pass protection, he is really good.
- 51:24Speaker 7: He checks all three of those running back boxes. I
- 51:28Speaker 7: don't know if he's going to put up 1,400, 1,500
- 51:31Speaker 7: yards just because of where he's at right now, but
- 51:34Speaker 7: he's got nine touchdowns, and he's catching it well, and
- 51:37Speaker 7: you're right. Outside of Devin Dampier, he's the most important
- 51:41Speaker 7: football player on this team, and to this point in time,
- 51:44Speaker 7: and maybe it was a little calculated. Maybe they were
- 51:47Speaker 7: saving him. Maybe they're going to utilize him more as
- 51:51Speaker 7: we get into conference season, and they were saving some
- 51:53Speaker 7: of those hits and those touches early in the season
- 51:56Speaker 7: to get some other people involved, but based on what
- 51:58Speaker 7: we saw last week in Ames, he is, he's, he's
- 52:02Speaker 7: on that list. He may not have the career numbers
- 52:05Speaker 7: at Utah, but a guy like Zach Moss does because
- 52:08Speaker 7: I'm not sure he'll be here for years, but he's,
- 52:10Speaker 7: he's really good.
- 52:11Speaker 2: He's not going to touch Alex Smith who accounted for
- 52:15Speaker 2: 42 total touchdowns, but I mean, he's on pace. He, he,
- 52:21Speaker 2: If he stays on the pace he's at right now,
- 52:23Speaker 2: he's going to score 27. Even if he scores 25,
- 52:26Speaker 2: that's the most productive year that we've ever had touchdown-wise
- 52:28Speaker 2: from a running back.
- 52:30Speaker 7: It's funny. I had a preseason battle for the Big 12.
- 52:33Speaker 7: I made Devin Vampir my preseason offensive player of the
- 52:36Speaker 7: year in the conference. It may end up being way
- 52:38Speaker 7: Sean Parker. Again, if you factor in touchdown production, receiving
- 52:43Speaker 7: and catching yards, he's going to be in that mix.
- 52:47Speaker 7: And to me, at the end of the day, the
- 52:49Speaker 7: thing that's about him and hearing Morgan talk about a
- 52:51Speaker 7: lot of these guys on the offensive side especially is
- 52:53Speaker 7: that they just want to win. They just want to win.
- 52:58Speaker 7: And they know winning is going to be, you know,
- 53:00Speaker 7: get them all the attention they want.
- 53:02Speaker 2: All right, I'm going to– I'm going to limit you.
- 53:04Speaker 2: You can only watch one Big 12 football game this weekend.
- 53:07Speaker 2: UCF Houston, your alma mater, Kansas, is Middle Tennessee, so
- 53:11Speaker 2: throw that one out. BYU-TCU, you mentioned. Texas Tech is
- 53:16Speaker 2: at Colorado. Cincinnati at Arizona. Both of those teams, I think,
- 53:20Speaker 2: have a chance to be pretty good. Baylor at Arizona State.
- 53:23Speaker 2: Which game, if you only get to watch one?
- 53:26Speaker 7: I'm probably going to go BYU-TCU because Utah plays both
- 53:30Speaker 7: of those teams. And like I said earlier, this is
- 53:33Speaker 7: kind of the backs against the wall game for TCU.
- 53:35Speaker 7: You've lost twice. You lost in conference. If you want
- 53:40Speaker 7: to have any chance, you've got to be able to
- 53:41Speaker 7: protect your home turf. And for BYU, I know they
- 53:44Speaker 7: played at Colorado State. I get that.
- 53:46Speaker 4: And they're good.
- 53:47Speaker 7: But I really want to see what that looks like
- 53:51Speaker 7: when they go on the road against a desperate team
- 53:54Speaker 7: because I think TCU is going to be desperate.
- 53:57Speaker 2: Bill, enjoy your weekend, your off weekend. Rest that voice,
- 54:00Speaker 2: I guess, a little bit. And we'll chat again next week.
- 54:03Speaker 2: Thanks for joining me.
- 54:05Speaker 7: Thanks, Sean. Talk to you soon.

- 55:32Speaker 2: We have to sneak this in because I should have
- 55:34Speaker 2: done it in the last hour. Time for a PGA
- 55:37Speaker 2: Tour leaderboard update from the Bank of Utah Championship at
- 55:40Speaker 2: Black Desert Resort in our own home state down in Ivins, Utah.

- 56:07Speaker 2: cards and you went to golf is the authorized worldwide
- 56:11Speaker 2: golf dealer here in the state of Utah. James Peterson,
- 56:15Speaker 2: what's going on at the bank of Utah championship down
- 56:18Speaker 2: in your old stomping grounds.
- 56:20Speaker 3: So happy for a couple of reasons. One, it's just
- 56:23Speaker 3: so cool. I mentioned this yesterday. Cool to see the
- 56:27Speaker 3: home area, hometown, if not exactly hometown for me being
- 56:32Speaker 3: showcased on kind of national TV. I'll, I'll say this too.
- 56:37Speaker 3: Another reason why that's cool is because there's just nothing.
- 56:41Speaker 3: There's no reason sports wise up until now for the St.
- 56:45Speaker 3: George area to be, to get that kind of a spotlight,
- 56:49Speaker 3: Utah tech and, is not that big a deal in
- 56:52Speaker 3: college sports, right?
- 56:53Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 56:55Speaker 3: It's that there's no, and there's no pro sports teams
- 56:58Speaker 3: in the area. So this is the, this is the
- 57:00Speaker 3: event to do that. And it's just, it's a rare thing.
- 57:03Speaker 3: It's really cool. But anyway, I digress, uh, bad news
- 57:06Speaker 3: for you.
- 57:07Speaker 4: You will not. I do.
- 57:09Speaker 1: I do not have to say our guy's suit.
- 57:10Speaker 2: He's name. Dang it. Cause he's not the leader anymore. Uh,
- 57:14Speaker 2: it's Kevin Roy, much easier to pronounce. Okay. Uh, Sounds
- 57:19Speaker 2: like you made up that name just so you don't
- 57:21Speaker 2: have to say a hard one.
- 57:22Speaker 1: I suppose it could be Patrick Waugh. It could be
- 57:25Speaker 1: Kevin Waugh.
- 57:25Speaker 2: It could be Waugh.
- 57:26Speaker 3: It could be Kevin Waugh. French-Canadian Kevin Roy. He is American,
- 57:29Speaker 3: but maybe he's got French-Canadian roots there. He's at 15 under.
- 57:33Speaker 3: He's 7 under for the day. He's still got a
- 57:36Speaker 3: couple more holes to go. He's shot a 63 so far, which.
- 57:41Speaker 2: OC to golf novices like you and I, we know
- 57:44Speaker 2: that 63 is good though. Okay.
- 57:46Speaker 1: So that's a really good day for Kevin Roy. It's
- 57:49Speaker 1: like a mini golf score.
- 57:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 57:51Speaker 1: Kevin Wah, if you will.
- 57:53Speaker 3: Uh, one shot off the lead alone in second is
- 57:57Speaker 3: Kevin Streelman. The Kevin's something about Kevin today. He's at
- 58:01Speaker 3: 14 under he's 600 for the day. A few shots behind, uh, Wah.
- 58:06Speaker 3: 12 shots in on his back nine. So he's got
- 58:11Speaker 3: even more time to overtake first place here before his
- 58:16Speaker 3: round is over. Alone in third is Austin Smotherman. The Smotherman,
- 58:22Speaker 3: he is 12 under, three shots off the lead. Alone
- 58:26Speaker 3: in fourth is Chris Kirk. He is 10 under, five
- 58:30Speaker 3: shots off the lead. I think that's the most I've
- 58:33Speaker 3: seen that are alone. We usually have a lot of
- 58:35Speaker 3: guys tied in the top 10. Tied for 5th, a
- 58:40Speaker 3: bunch of guys. Harry Higgs, they're at 9-under. Max Homa,
- 58:45Speaker 3: Taylor Moore.
- 58:46Speaker 2: And then to round.
- 58:47Speaker 3: Out the top 10, let's see if I can... Billy
- 58:52Speaker 3: Horschel might be the biggest name. Tied for 10th at 8-under.
- 58:57Speaker 3: And a few other guys. Jordan Smith is one of those.
- 59:02Speaker 3: Check on how our guy Tony Finau did yesterday. He
- 59:05Speaker 3: was three under, or he's three under for the tournament. He's,
- 59:08Speaker 3: he's in his, uh, He's in the back nine. He's
- 59:11Speaker 3: two under for the day. So he finished the day
- 59:13Speaker 3: yesterday one under par. Right now, because the scores are
- 59:17Speaker 3: so low, though, OC, he's one shot back of the
- 59:20Speaker 3: projected cut.
- 59:22Speaker 1: At three under. At three under. So this is a
- 59:25Speaker 1: tough game. Tough tournament to make the cut.
- 59:28Speaker 3: He's only one shot back at that, though, and he's
- 59:31Speaker 3: 13 holes in, so he's still got five holes to go.
- 59:33Speaker 3: He's got to find at least one birdie in the
- 59:37Speaker 3: rest of his round to play the weekend down at
- 59:39Speaker 3: Black Desert. So that's your PGA Tour leaderboard update brought
- 59:42Speaker 3: to you by Uintah Golf.
- 59:44Speaker 4: All right.
- 59:45Speaker 2: Well, I guess that is an easy course, at least
- 59:48Speaker 2: for these guys. Well, we'll talk about it with Paul
- 59:51Speaker 2: Pugmire when he joins us. Our number three.
- 59:54Speaker 3: Live from the bank of Utah championship, by the way,
- 59:57Speaker 3: Paul on hand. So he'll get us some eyewitness accounts
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: of what we're seeing over there.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: Paul Pugmire is just, he's absolutely in his glory when
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: he's at an event like this. Like there's nothing that
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: is more Paul Pugmire than the PGA coming to the
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: state of Utah. He knows everything about the PGA. He
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: knows everything about the, golf here in the state of Utah.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: This is the Venn diagram becoming a perfect circle for
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: Paul Pugmire.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: And he, I don't think he's missed. It was black
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: desert championship was the name at first.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: They've got it.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: They've got a corporate sponsor now, bank of Utah. Um,
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: I don't think he's missed a single one, whether it's.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: The LPGA or the PGA one LPGA in the summertime, uh,
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: So yeah.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: And if you're Paul, of course you're going to go
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: to all those. So Evie, you're right. Just a dream
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: thing for the PGA to have a, an event here
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: in our home state for Paul.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: All right. So we're coming up on a weekend of
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: college football where obviously Utah is inactive. They're on the buy,
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: but it is a sneaky monster weekend in college football,
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: November 7th, where the holy wars played is going to
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: be another huge, huge, huge weekend. Great rivalry games. ranked
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: versus ranked all these types of things. The Alabama, Mississippi
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: state game played in this weekend is huge. And I'm
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: looking at it even through the lens of Utah football.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: That's a massive game because if Alabama wins now, you've
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: probably gained some ground on Mississippi state in the rankings.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Cause they'll drop a little bit.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: If Mississippi state wins potentially Not even potentially Mississippi state wins.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: They're going to leapfrog Utah in the rankings and it
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: all comes out in the wash and the rankings don't
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: matter all that much mid season. It's just a conversation
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: point for guys like me. But if Mississippi state beats Alabama,
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: Mississippi state now is probably a top 12 team and
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: pushes Utah down a little bit. Alabama probably doesn't fall
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: that far. So maybe they still stay in front of
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: the Utes in a situation like that one. Houston is
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: active against the UCF team that I think is better
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: than a lot of people expected them to be. So
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: that one is really interesting in conference. BYU is on
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: the road for the first time against TCU. I don't
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: think TCU is as good as we projected them to be.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: I think BYU is going to be able to handle
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: their business there. And That affects Utah in a couple
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: of different ways, obviously, because you want, even though you
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: don't like to root for BYU, you want BYU to
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: come to Rice Echo Stadium as an undefeated, at that point,
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: probably like top 17.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: That's what you want.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: And you want that to be the biggest win possible
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: if you can get it. It also affects Utah if
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: TCU continues to pile up losses for This is one that,
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: you know, a lot of people already had penciled in
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: for them. Most of us thought that they were going
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: to be able to beat North Carolina and that they
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: were going to be able to beat UCF and that
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: TCU would probably be a ranked team in this game
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: against BYU.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: They're not right.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: So let's say they exit the weekend two and three,
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: and then they're against Baylor, West Virginia, Kansas, Arizona, Kansas state,
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: all of those winnable games for TCU. But now they're
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: dealing with diminished confidence. Now there's little trouble in paradise.
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: who knows what kind of angst you got developing, and
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: maybe that reduces the quality of a TCU win if
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: Utah can get it at the end of November, right?
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: It doesn't diminish how dangerous they are. It just diminishes
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: how much people respect you either beating them or, of course,
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: the disastrous outcome of potentially losing to them.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: So that one affects Utah indirectly. The TCU-BYU game.
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: As Bill Riley mentioned, both future opponents for the Utes
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: on the docket.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: Another monster one.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: It's not ranked versus ranked, although there's plenty of those
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: matchups on the slate this weekend. Miami against Clemson. That
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: one is at Clemson, right? That is a really tough
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: place to play. Miami is three score favorites here. They're
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: 16 and a half point favorites against the University of Miami. Now,
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Clemson lost badly to LSU, and then they beat Georgia Southern,
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: North Carolina, and Cal, and none of those games were
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: super impressive, but this Clemson team is very, very talented,
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: and the reason I bring it up is Miami is
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: a team that right now is projected to be a
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: college football playoff team. They're projected to be the top
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: dogs in the ACC. They've got this Clemson game. They've
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: got a Notre Dame game later in the season. The
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: rest of it for Miami is, they're going to be
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: heavy favorites in every game except that Notre Dame game.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: So you need one of these like sneaky underdog talented
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: teams in the ACC to give you a litmus test
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: of how good Miami really is when we're talking about
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: the power structure of college football. And of course they
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: are one of those big spender type rosters. So it's
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: informative on that front as well. Headlining a, a, part
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: of the slate this weekend, Ohio state, Iowa, Iowa beat
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: Michigan last week.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: They are four and Oh, Iowa is a team.
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: And a program that if you are looking for examples
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: of what Utah can be, should be sustainably can hope
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: to be in college football. to the chagrin of many
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: because of the style of the football that they have
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: played for so many years. But Iowa is a, is
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: a team that spends kind of at the bottom end
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: of the big 10, which is still a little bit
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: higher than most of the teams in the big 12.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: And it's a little bit higher than what Utah is
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: spending right now. But Iowa is overachieving relative to their
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: spending relative to their reputation relative to their standing. in
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: things like the, you know, recruiting rankings and the pop
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: culture awareness, Iowa is just, they're just consistently good. Iowa
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: is the reliable, you know, what you're going to get hard-nosed,
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: maybe a little bit boring, sometimes well-coached and they're there again,
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: fanatical fan base that understands that team and that dynamic
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: in a way that Most people around the nation really don't.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: It's very much a reflection of what we see from
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: the University of Utah. Iowa is a team that I
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: think you kind of root for from a philosophical standpoint.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: And they've got a chance to beat Ohio State, who,
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: of course, is still a top-five team in the country,
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: their only loss, a razor-thin road loss to the number-one team, Texas.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: And this is the Buckeyes' moment. Molly walked Illinois last week.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: So a tough test for Iowa. And again, these are
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: teams that are ranked Iowa, especially ranked in proximity to
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: the university of Utah and a team that when I say, yeah,
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: you can root for squads like this because what happens,
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: what's good for them is a confirmation that you can
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: continue to be successful at Utah doing the way things,
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: the way that you do them. And at the price
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: that you do them well, that all evaporates when you're
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: talking about the limited space in a college football playoff.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: And when you talk about Iowa now being a team
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: that has to be reckoned with in the rankings, it
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: will have plenty of resolution as the season progresses. But
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: that one interesting because of where I was ranked relative
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: to Utah. And just the fact that these are two
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: monster big 10 teams, Florida takes on Missouri. I am
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: not as big a believer in Missouri as some people are.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: I think I'm jumping on the Florida Gators bandwagon again.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: They're right now a top-ten team.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: Tennessee hosting Auburn, and they'll have their happy hour at Tennessee,
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: as we talked about on the show yesterday. So how
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: insane is that atmosphere going to be? It's a day
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: game at Neyland Stadium. Thankfully, the weather's not going to
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: be too bad, 76 degrees. So all those people who
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: start pre-gaming way too early– They're probably not going to
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: pass out from dehydration, which is good. Texas tech, Colorado.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: Not all that interesting for me. Washington USC sneaky.
- 1:08:37Speaker 6: Good.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: I think the Washington Huskies are three in one. They
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: lost to Minnesota and their three wins are over Washington state,
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: Utah state and Eastern Washington. Those were all home games.
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: In fact, they've only played home games so far. This
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: will be the first trip out of Seattle for Jed
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: fish and the Huskies and U S needs this win
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: in the worst way. They should get it, but they
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: need this win in the worst way. They're 8.5-point favorites
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: in this one. Washington got a wake-up call from the
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Golden Gophers of Minnesota where P.J. Fleck was rubbing his
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: players' blood on his face in celebration, acting like a
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: complete lunatic. I'm always at least peripherally interested in what's
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: going on at USC football.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: It's a hate watch for me.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: I'm not afraid to admit that, but if USC doesn't
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: win this game and failing that, I think they have
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: to like win and cover.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: I think they have to be impressive in this game.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: The smoke and the fire on the Lincoln Riley $ 70
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: million buyout hot seat is getting to a level of concern,
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: a level of seriousness that for people down in Southern California.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: And maybe concern and seriousness is the wrong way to
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: put it because I think there are plenty of folks
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: who want Lincoln Riley to be out. But if you're
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: a BYU fan, I've said it, I'll say it again.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: If you're a BYU fan, you want Lincoln Riley to
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: be successful in this game. You don't want USC making
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: phone calls to Provo. And they will if Lincoln Riley
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: and this USC Trojans team lose to Washington.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: I promise you. Even if it doesn't happen immediately, that
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: will be.
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: The kind of beginning of the end type loss if
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: they can't get a win here. Washington, USC, that is
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: a 530 game on NBC. Right now, the best group
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: of five team, group of six team in the country
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: is the Boise State Broncos.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: Again, we're familiar with this refrain.
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: Utah State's got a tough one on the road against Boise,
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: who's 18 and a half point favorites there. And that
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: kind of rounds out the more important and more interesting games.
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: Although the big 12 slate, and we talked about this
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: with bill, the big 12 slate, UCF Houston is sneaky,
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: kind of a good game. West Virginia, Iowa state, West
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: Virginia needs to bounce back and win that one. Cincinnati, Arizona,
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: the night game on Fox, the big 12 after dark game.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: This one is, this is a good game.
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: Arizona, despite being three and one and unranked, they are
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: the home home favorites here, six and a half point favorites.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: Cincinnati is for me, a surprise four and O on
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: the season coming off that win over Kansas state, Boston college,
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: West Carolina, Miami of Ohio, but then they beat a
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: good and productive Kansas state team.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: And now they go on the road again for the
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: first time.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: There's a ton of teams in college football that played
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: their entire first four games at home without getting on
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: a bus, without getting on a plane. Does that change
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: the dynamic? enough significantly for Cincinnati. We're going to find
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: out and they'll go back to back on the road. Also,
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: this game interests me because Arizona is the team or
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: one of the teams that I thought would be that
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: next tier kind of beneath TCU, excuse me, beneath Texas tech,
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: BYU and Utah. I thought Arizona was one of the teams.
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: In fact, I thought they were the team that That
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: would be in the conversation alongside whoever fell out of
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: that conference championship obvious matchup. And to be fair, all
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: of us, I shouldn't say all of us because I
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: can't speak for you people, but most handicapped the conference
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: as being Texas Tech and or BYU at the top,
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: kind of by themselves. And then Utah being down on
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: the next tier and then Arizona being another tier below that.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: For me personally, it was BYU at the top in
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: the preseason, Texas tech, I thought would have a bit
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: of a fall off. And as much as I try
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: to be realistic, I thought that Utah would have more
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: questions that needed to be answered. Even playing a soft
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: schedule in the early part of the season right now, The,
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: it looks like it's BYU, Utah, Texas tech, maybe slightly
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: below them, although they're winning, they're doing what they're supposed
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: to do. I just don't think they're as impressive or
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: convincing in those wins. And Will Hammond has not been
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: the quarterback that they need him to be. They brought
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: in the Castellanos guy. And a lot of us, you know, they,
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: first of all, in the off season, they brought in Sorsby.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: They dealt with the controversy that was associated with that,
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: dragged the program through the mud really for no reason.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: not for no reason, but in a wasteful way, I
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: should say, there was a reason that the mud existed.
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: Them fighting that battle was a bad choice is what
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: I'm trying to say there. And then I kept saying,
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: they're going to be fine with Will Hammond. They're going
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: to be fine with Will Hammond. Well, look, Joey McGuire
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: knew something that I don't. Of course, that's his quarterback.
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: And he just hasn't been as good as he looked
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: against the University of Utah. That's the best game he's
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: played in his career. That is right now the high
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: watermark of his career when he came in against the
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: Utes and looked incredible and helped that team kind of
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: wear Utah down and end up taking over that game
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: in the fourth quarter.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: A big part of that was Will Hammond. And we
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: have learned there.
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: Was some context to it as a guy who grew
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: up as a BYU fan. He's always hated Utah and
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: it was kind of like his Superbowl and he played
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: that way.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: He was incredible.
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: Well, he has not met that level yet or since.
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: And they've had to use the Castellanos guy. And it's
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: just a strange thing going on at Texas tech right now.
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: But back to the point I was making Arizona was
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: that team. I believe in Brent Brennan as a coach.
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: I believe in no for feet as a quarterback. He
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: doesn't have quite the, the offensive weapons that he enjoyed
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: in a first round draft pick high school teammate, incredible chemistry,
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: a sort of situation like he had with Tetsuro McMillan,
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: but He's still got some good weapons at his disposal.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: They've got a solid defensive lineup. They've got a really
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: talented group of players. And I think Arizona, after losing
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: to BYU and really not looking all that great, the
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: score was not indicative of how much BYU dominated that game,
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: in my opinion. 28-17 makes it look like it was
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: closer than it really was for me. And Arizona could
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: play themselves back into this conversation of, Hey, we took
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: an early season loss because we're the only team, one
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: of the only teams in this conference that played anybody
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: in the early part of the season.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: But watch what we're capable of now. They need to
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: get their running game more established.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: Still, Arizona is one of those teams that is either
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: going to start proving themselves this weekend or they're going
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: to fall out of the conversation. They're going to fall
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: by the wayside. They're going to either prove me wrong
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: or they're going to prove me right. And of course,
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: I'm hoping that they prove me right because I don't
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: like being wrong. It's never fun. All right, we've got
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: to take another break here. Man, the show is flying
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: by today. Daily Dump is coming next. We've got a
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: wild collection of stories that I want to get to
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: in the Daily Dump. Lee Sterling is going to join
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: us in about 20 minutes to talk about the picks
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: of the weekend. Paul Pugmire shortly after that to let
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: us know what's going on at the Bank of Utah
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: Championship at Black Desert and at 1.30, the airing of grievances.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: We're halfway through on a Friday. It's the Sean O'Connell

- 1:17:24Speaker 2: going to be able to listen at that time, you

- 1:17:34Speaker 2: yourself and head into the weekend stress-free with the airing
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: of grievances. The Daily Dump is brought to you by
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: our friends over at Valley Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, and Excavation.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: If you need a new water line, you need a
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: new sewer line, that stop and waste valve is leaking
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: as you turn off the sprinklers for the year. Give
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: them a call. They'll take care of all of it
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: for you. You do not want to DIY that big
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: excavation stuff. All right. So go ahead and make the
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: phone call or better yet, go to valley plumbing.com and
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: just make an appointment online. You don't even have to
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: pick up the phone. The trailblazers, the Portland trailblazers have
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: had a bunch of personnel turnovers as of late. And
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: one of the, casualties of tom dundon's as far as
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: we could tell terrible ownership so far it has been
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: their longtime play-by-play announcer and a guy that is beloved
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: by that fan base and respected and talked about around
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: the league as you know one of the better people
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: to get to know in the business kevin calabro decided
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: not to continue his role as the play-by-play broadcaster for
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: the the Portland trailblazers because he said they, they offer
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: him a subprime contract. This is something that they they've
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: been doing. Tom Dundon is a penny pincher. He is
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: the guy who won't even give like the commemorative t-shirts
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: on opening night or playoff games. He's like, And he
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: feels like you can't tell him anything because he owns
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: the Carolina Hurricanes who just won a Stanley Cup.
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: So he's like, what do you mean? I know exactly
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: what I'm doing as a sports owner.
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: One other thing, that was a subprime was a dig
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: at how Tom Dundon built his fortune, which was through
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: subprime auto lending. So it's like a little, oh, well,
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: the contract was subprime, just like his business that he's in.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: By the way, having a little experience with this kind
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: of thing myself, it's a tough place to be put
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: in when someone offers you less than you make or
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: less than you're worth, and then you have to make
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: a decision on whether or not you want to continue.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: And Kevin Calabro walked away. That's a lot of uncertainty
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: he's facing. Now, my hope is he's made enough money
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: and done enough that he's going to land on his feet. Well,
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: he's landed on his feet. He's the T-Wolves play-by-play guy now.
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: So I didn't even know that he's got another job.
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: So yeah, he landed on his feet with a team
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: that is a lot more interesting and going to be
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: a lot better to call NBA games for, but yeah,
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: his replacement was his replacement was short-lived young guy, 29
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: year old, which good gracious. Everyone in the world wants
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: these jobs. Getting them in your twenties is a win. Congratulations.
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: Congratulations for about 24 hours. Young man named Braden Bell
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: was hired by the Portland Trailblazers as their play-by-play announcer.
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: And then he was summarily fired because somebody went back
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: through his old tweets, tweets from 2012 and 2013, which look,
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: that was, that was not that long ago.
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: I mean, it was a long time ago, but it's
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: not that long ago, right?
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: My thoughts and opinions about the world in general are
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: probably not super different now than they were in 2012
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: and 2013. Of course, in 2013, I turned 30 years old.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: This guy, Braden Bell, when people were digging up his
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: old tweets, he He was 15 when he was saying
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: things that were unflattering to the fair sex, came off
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: as misogynistic. He threw some things out there that can
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: only be perceived as racist against Asians.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: It's a terrible thing that he tweeted about.
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: Or terrible things that he tweeted back in the day
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: and at any age to be thinking or let alone
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: publishing those kinds of thoughts.
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: It's, it's not good.
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: It's bad. It's bad.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: It's bad.
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: Um, and it brings into light the conversation of how
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: far back we need to adjudicate people's statements and conversations
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: on social media and how far back you yourself need
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: to look at your own things in social media and,
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: And whether or not a 15-year-old version of you and
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: that behavior should forever alter your employment opportunities and things
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: like that when you are now 30. He's 29 years old.
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: And look, I'm going to be really careful how I
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: discuss this because I think that on the spectrum of,
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: hey man, you can't really forgive a 15-year-old for doing that.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: Mean tweets are pretty low on the list because kids
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: are morons. And kids on social media are even bigger morons.
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: And I'm not trying to excuse any racially insensitive or
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: gender insensitive or whatever.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: The content that he put out there, not condonable.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: You don't. And it's not like, and if it's your
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: kid doing that, your teenage son doing that, which he
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: was when he did this, right?
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: He's somebody's teenage son.
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: You want to correct that and you want to stop that.
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: My hope would be... There's no argument there.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: Twitter didn't exist when I was 15.
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: Okay?
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: Text messages didn't exist when I was 15.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: If people were walking around with cameras.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: You're old.
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I know. If people were walking around with cameras...
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: Camera phones barely existed, right? I don't think any of
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: my friends had a camera phone. Maybe they existed, but
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: they weren't... Teenagers didn't have them yet. Like, they were
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: probably too expensive. Now, like, there's some stuff on Camcorder....
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: Maybe camera phones did exist, but I think it was
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: a camcorder. There's some stuff. I did some stuff on
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: camcorder home video.
- 1:24:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: Like on a home video camera that I'm glad has
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: never come out.
- 1:24:10Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: I got in a fight one time at a very
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: public place that everyone would recognize that someone had a camcorder.
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: They got my friend filmed.
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: And it was like, you know, it's unceremonious teenage dumb behavior,
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: but like, If I was 30 years old and I
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: got fired from a dream job because of that, which
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: my behavior in that scenario was completely unacceptable.
- 1:24:36Speaker 3: And it'd be ridiculous for you to get fired for
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: a job at 30 for that.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: And by the way, it was actually illegal. What I
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: did was actually illegal. You didn't get charged, whatever. I
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: didn't get charged. I didn't get arrested.
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: There was no police involvement. But the point is, there's
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: a videotape somewhere. Shout out, Cam, if you have that. Um,
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: please don't put it on social media is what you're saying.
- 1:24:57Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: Like there. And do I use bad language in that video?
- 1:25:02Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: Do I throw out insults in that video that you
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: probably can't say anymore?
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: Maybe.
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: I hope not, but maybe if I, and so when
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: I was thirties, when I was working in San Francisco, right?
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: So let's say that that video from when I was
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: 15 or 16 years old and I got in a
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: fight in a parking lot with some guy, That video
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: comes out, and my employer at the flagship home of
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: the Raiders and the Oakland Athletics, they're just like, oh, yeah, sorry, man.
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: That was unacceptable behavior when you were a teenager. We
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: have to fire you. How would we feel about that?
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: That doesn't sit right with me. And it obviously depends
- 1:25:47Speaker 3: on the thing, right? There are things that juveniles do.
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: Records may or may not be sealed. that that's not forgivable,
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: even when you're 10, 20 years later, okay? Like, that
- 1:26:03Speaker 3: probably will affect your employment status. Or in some cases,
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: maybe it doesn't. But most of the time, it probably will. Well,
- 1:26:13Speaker 3: and I want to talk more about this later, OC,
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: but I'll just say this for now, my feeling on this.
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: When it comes to saying things that are not condonable....
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: But saying things as a teenager for about 15 years
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: later for you to get fired for something because a
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: TV station decided to take however many hours it took
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: to find those tweets because he's kept tweeting for 12,
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: 13 years since then. For them to come out and
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: publish those things and drag the name through the mud,
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: I don't think that that's necessary. And I don't think
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: that the Portland Trailblazers had to fire this kid for that.
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: I also want to say this. Well, and again, I'll
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: say again, I'm not condoning anything he said. I just
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: don't think that in this case that's necessary.
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: And look, I hate, I mean, I loathe.
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: When people explain away bad behavior, saying things like kids
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: will be kids, boys will be boys, I can't stand that.
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: I really hate it because it's applied as a blanket
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: thing over whatever the offense is. Like, if somebody eggs
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: my house, it's obnoxious, it's technically illegal, it's a pain.
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: Do I want somebody when they're 21 years old to
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: get fired because their employer finds out that they did that?
- 1:27:40Speaker 6: No.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: We'll talk about this in the airing of grievances last night.
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: So a guy said something to me last night when
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: I was pulling into the park at the mammoth game,
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: a guy said something to me last night that if
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: his employer found out that he said that he would
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: be fired for it.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: I don't want him fired for it. Like people say
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: and do dumb things.
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: There's a difference for me between like, if you, if
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: you are a part of like a violent assault, or
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: if you're somebody who like breaks into someone's house and
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: steals things, or like if it's a real crime that
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: happened when you were 15 years old, maybe we could
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: have a conversation about how long that needs to affect you.
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: This guy, Brayden Bell, and I'm not, I'm coming off
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: as being like a champion for him.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: I don't know him at all.
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: I don't, He sent some bad tweets when he was
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: 15 years old. And a big part of why this
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: television station and why people in Portland are like, you
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: cannot employ this guy because he's a misogynist.
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: Guess what he's been doing for the last two years?
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: Building his resume, building his chops as a basketball announcer.
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: Guess what he's been doing? WNBA games. He's been the
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: voice of the Phoenix Mercury. for the last two seasons.
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: He hates women and goodness gracious, the Phoenix mercury and
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: the Phoenix market never went back to when he was
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: 15 years old and said, Oh, he tweeted something about
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: big girls.
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: So we got to fire him.
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: And maybe, maybe in that case, it would have been
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: better because then he could have been brought before the
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: team and the team would have been like, what's this about, man?
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: You got to show women more respect or something like that.
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: It could have been, I don't know, but this is
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: a guy who spent two years calling WNBA games.
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: Then he gets an NBA job.
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: And the same day someone goes back and says, has
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: he ever said anything when he was 15 years old
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: that I find to be unacceptable?
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: It's crazy. And it sucks.
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: Listen, all of us, every single one of us and
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: I'm maybe women less than men. I don't know, but
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: I think even, even girls, teenage girls.
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: Could probably be, uh, put in this category.
- 1:30:01Speaker 3: Every single one of us has said something that in
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: today's culture of cancel culture, such a new over, overused term.
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: It's kind of been gone by the wayside a little bit,
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: but it's coming back. Um, But in this culture of
- 1:30:16Speaker 3: like nothing is forgivable of what you said publicly, like
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: all of us would be fired. All of us would
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: be canceled, would want people would want us to be
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: canceled in some way based on something we said as
- 1:30:30Speaker 3: a teenager.
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: We just mean like I.
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: When I was junior high is when Twitter came out
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: for me, so Facebook was there all through high school
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: for me. So I had the opportunity to say some things.
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: You didn't really have that opportunity when you were in
- 1:30:48Speaker 3: high school. Didn't go on those things very much because
- 1:30:53Speaker 3: they were still new. So it's still more like things
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: I said to people. that maybe we're off color or
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: we're downright insulting, downright ignorant.
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: Like, I'm guilty of that.
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: Are you saying I should never have a job?
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: Like, it's ridiculous.
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: And look. I think an important distinction, at least for me,
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: is if he sent out these tweets when he was
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: 25 and now he was 39. Completely different thing. Then
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: we'd be having a different conversation. He's an adult at
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: that point. It's cited in the ESPN article, so I
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: think I can say it. I'm quoting here. One of
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: the things that he's being fired for is he tweeted,
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: and I don't know the context of it. He tweeted
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: something about, in the tweet he said, I'm not racist, but,
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: this is the quote, I'm not racist, but Asian people.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: Upset me.
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: And you shouldn't say that. Obviously, that is can only
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: be interpreted as racist. That's not something that anyone should
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: ever put out there. That's not someone that anyone should
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: ever think. However, if you do it when you're 15
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: years old. And then you're 29 or 30 years old
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: and someone goes back and digs it up and be like,
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: remember when you said this, you probably truly don't even
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: remember when you said that. Now I will allow for this.
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: If the Portland trailblazers handled this the right way, they
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: would have gotten notice of these tweets existing from the
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: television station up there, which is weird enough in its
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: own right.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: And they would have said, okay, thank you for bringing
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: this to our attention.
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: We're going to go talk to Braden Bell about this,
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: and we'll tell you what our decision is. And if
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: they go back and they talk to Braden Bell, and
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: they're just like, I'm going to interview every person you know.
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: I'm going to interview your previous employer with the Phoenix Mercury.
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: I'm going to go talk to all these people.
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: Is any of them going to tell me that you're
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: a racist or a misogynist?
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: Like that you still hold these things that you held
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: these thoughts that you held when you were 15.
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: And if he goes.
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: Well, yeah, Asian people do upset me. Then fire him.
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: And if he says, yeah, I have a problem with women.
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: I was just working in the WNBA because I needed
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: a job. Then fire the guy. But that's the only way.
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: And maybe that's what they did, to be fair.
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: Maybe that's what they did, but this is crazy. I
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: would think that they would have made a statement.
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: In their statement, they would have said, we went back
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: and we found that this is still a pervasive thing, though.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: I would think that. That was not in their statement.
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: This is the statement.
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: We did not meet our own bar in this process.
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: For that, we apologize to Blazers Flans and to Rip City.
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: We strongly believe that everyone who's part of the rip
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: city should feel welcome and safe. And we will make
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: sure that our new broadcaster reflects these values.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: We will do better.
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: Good luck to the Portland trailblazers and anyone who wants
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: this job because everyone who's applying now is going back
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: and they are scrubbing their social media from the last
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: probably 25 years forever.
- 1:34:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: It's, Good luck.
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: And listen, like, I don't want to come off as, again,
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: I do not want anyone to misinterpret me to say
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: I think that what he put in those tweets when
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: he was a teenager are acceptable.
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: Not condone, like, just uncondonable.
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: And should not be thought of in a good way
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: at all. Those are bad things that he said. I
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: don't think that it should have affected his employment unless
- 1:34:31Speaker 3: you make a good point to say if they did
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: some extra background after this came to light and they
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: found that, hey, this is still part of who he is, okay,
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: that's acceptable. I don't trust that that's what they did, though, OC.
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: I just don't trust it.
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: Look, if that's what you did, put it in your
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: statement and say, look, we investigated this and this guy
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: has some problematic views, our bad. This is a 29-year-old
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: who was about to start. That's a dream job for
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: a 43-year-old. To get that job at 29 is remarkable.
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: And to have a voice of a WNBA team job
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: at 27, that's unbelievable. This guy is well ahead of
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: the curve here. And now he's being canceled. I thought
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: we were done with that.
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: I don't know that we ever will as long as
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: we have records of people saying dumb things.
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: Deshaun Watson has a job in the NFL making $ 50
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: million a year. This kid said some mean things when
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: he was 15 and can't call games for the Portland Trailblazers.
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: Those two things are happening on the same day in
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: the same country in the professional sports landscape.
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: That is silly.
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: Bad deal, man.
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: And listen, if it does come to light, what you said,
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: it comes to light that Braden is still a piece
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: of crap that thinks in those ways that he thought
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: at 15 enough to post those things online, then I
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: retract everything I said.
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: But we don't know that yet. Yeah, I want to
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: make sure I'm not defending the person. I am defending
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: or I am questioning the.
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: It's the process. The thought process that leads to something
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: like this. And by the way, I need to make
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: it very, very clear, and some of you know why
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: I'm making this very, very clear. Actions when you are
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: 15 or 16 years old that are criminal, I think
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: probably should be adjudicated for several years relative to your opportunities.
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: Words that you said 13.
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: Years ago have a different place for me personally.
- 1:36:55Speaker 3: I would agree with that as long as you can
- 1:36:58Speaker 3: ensure that that's not who you are anymore. We all,
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: especially by the time you're a teenager and by the
- 1:37:05Speaker 3: time you're 30 years old, in Braden's case basically, you
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: do so much growth. You have so much you learn
- 1:37:13Speaker 3: about the world. You obviously, in most cases, are a
- 1:37:17Speaker 3: completely different person and have completely different thoughts about things.
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: You know how we can tell that's usually the case?
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: Because there are very few adult goths walking around. Yeah.
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: There was a lot when I was in high school, man.
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: There was a ton.
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: Adults don't shop at Hot Topic. They just don't.
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: Not very often.
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: Not very often. We've got to take a break here.
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: Lee Sterling is going to join us with his picks
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: for the weekend from Paramount Sports next. Paul Pugmire at
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: 1 o'clock. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: and 92.1 FM.
- 1:38:11Speaker 6: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 1:38:15Speaker 6: best inside of your youths. Let's get back to OC
- 1:38:18Speaker 6: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. Lee Sterling going
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: to hop on with us here today. us the picks
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: for the weekend. Really interesting games coming up in the
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: NFL and in college football. We went through some of
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: the college football slate. Big NFL weekend as well. Niners, Broncos,
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: a lot of local fans give their love to one
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: or both of those teams. Chiefs, Raiders as well.
- 1:38:48Speaker 4: Raiders.
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: shockingly sitting at three and oh, so far this year,
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: are they legit? We find out a little bit more
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: about them as they take on the Kansas city chiefs,
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: Seahawks chargers, not a fun place for the chargers to
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: try to bounce back, but that's where it's at. We'll
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: take a look. Of course at BYU TCU. Also Lee
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: Sterling is the best in the business. He's on a
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: hot streak and he joins us once again. Hey Lee,
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: welcome back.
- 1:39:14Speaker 4: Well, thanks for having me. Uh, Long flight back from
- 1:39:18Speaker 4: Salt Lake City, but worked it all out. Hey, I
- 1:39:22Speaker 4: was watching three games on TV on Delta and had
- 1:39:26Speaker 4: my phone out with the Wi-Fi. Five games total, so
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: I almost felt like I was at home.
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: That's fantastic.
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: Lee, you should have stayed an extra week so you
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: could have taken in the UFC event this weekend.
- 1:39:37Speaker 4: Oh, you don't think I tried to talk my wife
- 1:39:39Speaker 4: into it. She wasn't buying it, so I'll be back
- 1:39:43Speaker 4: for the summer. They always have some good local shows.
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: You ever go to the local shows there?
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: Yeah, actually, we got a couple of guys from my
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: gym that fight on those, and then... The promoter hops
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: on with us a few times a year to talk
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: about his fights and UFC stuff.
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: So, yeah, the local scene is still thriving. It's pretty fun.
- 1:40:03Speaker 4: Well, I'll be there next summer for a couple weeks,
- 1:40:06Speaker 4: so make sure we'll hit one of those together. All right?
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: Let's do it.
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: All right, let's get to your picks this week. I
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: want to start on the NFL.
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: Seahawks are seven-point favorites against the Chargers, who have so
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: far looked hapless and helpless. Can they get a bounce-back
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: win against the defending Super Bowl champs?
- 1:40:24Speaker 4: Well, obviously, you know, looks like the offense is almost
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: unhelpful right now. 14, 14, and 16 points with Mike
- 1:40:32Speaker 4: McDaniel as their offensive coordinator. But what was Jim Harbaugh doing?
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: They're down by four with almost six minutes to go
- 1:40:40Speaker 4: with three timeouts going for it on fourth and ten.
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: As soon as I saw them in the formation, I'm like,
- 1:40:46Speaker 4: they're done. I still think Seattle needs another piece, maybe
- 1:40:52Speaker 4: a different running back. The kid Price is not ready
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: for prime time. Charvin will be coming back off the
- 1:40:58Speaker 4: injured lift soon, but I think Seattle, off that horrific
- 1:41:03Speaker 4: performance by their defense. Now, one of the touchdowns they
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: gave up was by the offense, but I think Seattle's
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: going to flex their muscles here. Seahawks 30-13.
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: You can listen to that game right here on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM,
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: your home of the Seattle Seahawks. I say that with
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: a bad taste in my mouth as a San Francisco
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: 49ers fan, but.
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: That's the reality.
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: All right, Niners, Broncos, a lot of fans for both
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: teams here in Salt Lake City. Geographic proximity, you know,
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: guys that have gone from the local universities and excelled.
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: at both of these professional franchises. And the Niners are
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: looking good so far. They are three-point favorites against the Broncos.
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: How do you see it?
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: Well, the key for the Niners is they can't have
- 1:41:48Speaker 4: any more injuries. I mean, their wide receiver position, specifically,
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: you know, if they get any more injuries, they're going
- 1:41:54Speaker 4: to be bringing guys up from the practice squad and
- 1:41:57Speaker 4: having to play them. But Brock Purdy is playing at
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: a really high level right now, and I like to
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: keep riding hot quarterbacks. Denver, I just don't think their
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: running game is good enough. J.K. Dobbins and R.J. Harvey,
- 1:42:09Speaker 4: both are not the answer, in my opinion, in the
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: play calling. What were they doing inside the red zone?
- 1:42:16Speaker 4: They've got some problems there also, and they really have
- 1:42:19Speaker 4: only been good in the fourth quarter so far this year.
- 1:42:21Speaker 4: I like San Francisco. I think they win in cover, 27-20.
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: I like that as a Niners fan. Chiefs, Raiders, same
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: as I said before, a lot of Raiders fans here.
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: A bunch of people jumped on the Chiefs bandwagon. Look,
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: I think I've said this with you already over one
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: of these past couple of weeks.
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: The Chiefs are surprising me.
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: I thought at some point Father Time was going to
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: come and he was going to collect his tax, but
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: the Chiefs have stayed very relevant. They are four-and-a-half-point favorites
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: against a surprisingly undefeated Raiders team.
- 1:42:55Speaker 4: I'm going to take a different approach here. Most people
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: will think, oh, okay, let's go with both head coaches.
- 1:43:01Speaker 4: You know, great backgrounds, Kubiak and obviously Andy Reid and
- 1:43:06Speaker 4: calling plays. But I think both defenses have really improved here.
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: Kansas City found a couple cornerbacks, one in the draft,
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: one in free agency. I mean, they're playing like a
- 1:43:18Speaker 4: championship-level unit here, allowing 10 points or less in two
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: of the three games. And the Raiders, I thought everyone
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: talked about, like, their receiver position, offensive line quarterback. I
- 1:43:28Speaker 4: thought their worst position last year was their linebackers. What
- 1:43:32Speaker 4: did they do? Usually in free agency, tough to hit
- 1:43:35Speaker 4: on players, but they certainly got an A + +,
- 1:43:38Speaker 4: bring in N'Kobe Dean from Philadelphia, brought in Quay Walker
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: from Green Bay. It's gone from their greatest weakness to their,
- 1:43:45Speaker 4: I think, their biggest biggest strength here. I'm going to
- 1:43:48Speaker 4: go under here. I think this game is going to
- 1:43:52Speaker 4: be like 2017, 23, 17. I'm not sure who's going
- 1:43:54Speaker 4: to be leading and it's going to come down to
- 1:43:55Speaker 4: one drive. Why not just play the under 48 and
- 1:43:59Speaker 4: you don't have to worry about who wins the game
- 1:44:00Speaker 4: under 48. I think is the best way to approach
- 1:44:03Speaker 4: this game.
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: All right. Taking the under rather than playing with the
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: four and a half point spread for Lee Sterling on
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: that chiefs Raider game. Into the college football, Rem, top
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: five versus top 15, you've got Ohio State against Iowa.
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: And Iowa's the biggest overachiever from an NIL standpoint in
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: the Big Ten Conference. They continue to be relevant, longest standing,
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: longest tenured head coach in all of college football. But
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: they find themselves big-time dogs against the Ohio State Buckeyes,
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: 14 points in this one. Can they cover?
- 1:44:37Speaker 4: Just think about it. For 27 years, you could wake
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: up and it'd be the same offense pretty much for
- 1:44:45Speaker 4: Kirk for rent, doing the same thing. And they don't
- 1:44:48Speaker 4: get upset. I have a couple friends, Sean, who literally
- 1:44:51Speaker 4: live there and live– Their units look over the main
- 1:44:59Speaker 4: campus area, and what they'll tell you is they're fine
- 1:45:02Speaker 4: with it. They're fine with going 7-5, 8-4, and a
- 1:45:06Speaker 4: great year 9-3. But I think it's not going to
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: be enough here. I know Hank Brown's better than the
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: last couple quarterbacks they have. Five touchdowns, no interceptions, but
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: he's going to have to throw more. two or three
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: touchdowns in this game if they want to even hang
- 1:45:19Speaker 4: in this game. Julian saying to Jeremiah Smith is almost unstoppable.
- 1:45:24Speaker 4: He didn't even have a great game last week, and
- 1:45:26Speaker 4: he caught Jeremiah Smith over 200 yards of passes. Their second, third,
- 1:45:31Speaker 4: and fourth wide receivers, they're flat out better than Iowa's
- 1:45:34Speaker 4: best here, unless Iowa is plus two or plus three
- 1:45:38Speaker 4: in the turnover category, and maybe they get a special
- 1:45:41Speaker 4: teams big play or a touchdown there. I just don't
- 1:45:45Speaker 4: think they can hang here. I think Ohio State's on
- 1:45:47Speaker 4: a mission here. Ohio State, I think they win in
- 1:45:50Speaker 4: cover here, 38-16.
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: We'll save BYU-TCU for last. So UNLV-CAL is your game
- 1:45:56Speaker 2: of the week. UNLV, two-and-a-half-point favorites.
- 1:46:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think there's a clear right-side winner in this
- 1:46:03Speaker 4: UNLV-CAL game. So you want to get this game for free,
- 1:46:06Speaker 4: just call 800-400-9741. We'll give you the UNLV-CAL number. Game
- 1:46:12Speaker 4: on me. Love one side here. 800-400-9741. And how about this?
- 1:46:18Speaker 4: We've won five straight weeks. Went 10-3-1 on the Baker's
- 1:46:22Speaker 4: Dozen last week. You want to try us out tonight?
- 1:46:25Speaker 4: We call it Freaky Friday. I've got a game tonight.
- 1:46:27Speaker 4: 4-0 Virginia Tech. 4-0 Pitt. That game's just $ 25. And
- 1:46:33Speaker 4: on Sunday, we have not lost a Sunday yet. All
- 1:46:37Speaker 4: three Sundays have been in the winning categories. We've gone 5-0, 4-1,
- 1:46:41Speaker 4: or 3-2. You get five selections on Sunday, just $ 55.
- 1:46:46Speaker 4: It's called Lee's Sunday Golden Ticket. Just one place, ParamountSports.com.
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: All right, BYU, six-and-a-half-point favorites coming off the bye against
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: a TCU team that has been somewhat disappointing so far,
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: sitting at 2-2 on the year.
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: Does BYU win on the road?
- 1:47:06Speaker 4: I think you're being kind. Disappointing is one thing. They
- 1:47:10Speaker 4: just can't get it going here. Last year when they
- 1:47:13Speaker 4: played BYU, BYU's defense held them to 13 points. 298
- 1:47:18Speaker 4: total yards. They were one for 10 on third downs.
- 1:47:22Speaker 4: And that was with Josh Hoover as the quarterback. Now
- 1:47:25Speaker 4: Harvard transfer quarterback, Jaden Craig is under center. He just
- 1:47:29Speaker 4: not getting the job done. He doesn't look comfortable at all. And, uh,
- 1:47:34Speaker 4: Just think that this BYU pass defense also might be
- 1:47:38Speaker 4: able to pick off a pass or two. Number 16
- 1:47:42Speaker 4: in yards per attempt allowed. I just think they're going
- 1:47:46Speaker 4: to limit the opportunities here. BYU does a great job
- 1:47:49Speaker 4: of picking off passes, something that TCU clearly struggles with.
- 1:47:55Speaker 4: I think BYU doubles up TCU here 35-17.
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: BYU to win and cover, and I know here on
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: the Home of the Utes, people don't always love it,
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: but I'm telling you, you want BYU undefeated.
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: When they come to Rice-Eckel Stadium.
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: That's a top seven, top six team, maybe, if they
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: can get to November 7th without experiencing a loss. And
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: that means we got a massive holy war on our
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: hands if it gets that way so big win potentially
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: for BYU this weekend coming off their bye Lee we
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: got nothing to watch except these games you gave us
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: picks for this weekend no Utah games so we'll be
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: glued to the TV and appreciate you giving us the
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: picks as always.
- 1:48:33Speaker 4: Okay you too buddy take care be safe 1-800-400-9741.
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: ParamountSports.com. Lee Sterling, the best in the business. Those are
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: his picks for the week. He also does the UFC stuff,
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: so if you want his picks on the Salt Lake
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: City card, go to ParamountSports.com.
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: Paul Pugmire is down in Ivins, Utah at the Black
- 1:48:56Speaker 2: Desert Classic. He'll join us next to talk about the
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: PGA setting down here in our home state. It's the
- 1:49:04Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:49:11Speaker 6: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 1:49:14Speaker 6: the best youth football coverage. Here's O.C. from the Murdoch
- 1:49:18Speaker 6: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: All right, airing of grievances in 21 minutes here on
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: 877-353-0700 or at Real OC Sports.
- 1:49:43Speaker 2: If you want to weigh in, unburden yourself with a
- 1:49:45Speaker 2: grievance that you've got to get off your chest here.
- 1:49:47Speaker 2: I've got a doozy of one that we're going to
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: litigate the trial here on the air. I might actually
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: deserve a grievance against me. I hope it's not that case, but...
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: You never know. It's a parking situation. We'll get to
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: it here in about 20 minutes. Right now, time to
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: check in on the Black Desert Championship down in Ivins,
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: Utah at St. George area. This is one of the
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: courses that you start hearing people talk about a couple
- 1:50:15Speaker 2: years ago, really. You start hearing people talk about it
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: on the national front and these celebrities and these athletes
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: who've left the NBA or the NFL or major league
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: baseball or hockey. And they're just like, yeah, I want
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: to go golfing. Oh, in Utah, you're in, you're from Utah.
- 1:50:30Speaker 2: Have you, have you golfed black desert yet? And I
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: always have to tell them no. And I feel sad
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: about it, but our conversation with Paul Pugmire brought to
- 1:50:39Speaker 2: you by our friends over at you went to golf.
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: Hi, Paul.
- 1:50:42Speaker 5: Hey, how are we doing?
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: Doing all right.
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: How are things playing down there at the black desert championship?
- 1:50:49Speaker 5: It is so beautiful. It is an absolutely crystalline, perfect day.
- 1:50:55Speaker 5: Not a cloud in the sky, not even a hint
- 1:50:58Speaker 5: of wind. Scoring conditions are just absolutely bonkers. People are
- 1:51:04Speaker 5: going low because they got a little rain that softened
- 1:51:07Speaker 5: up the course here a couple days ago. And so
- 1:51:13Speaker 5: balls are in the air, birdie putts are falling, and
- 1:51:15Speaker 5: it is a great time.
- 1:51:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you mentioned people going low. We've seen as low
- 1:51:22Speaker 2: as a 62. I guess there's still some golf left
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: to play, but several 63s. Is it going to get
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: even lower than that, or are we going to be
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: stuck or happy with 62 as the low?
- 1:51:37Speaker 5: Well, so far today, the lowest round today is a
- 1:51:41Speaker 5: minus 8 score, so that's 63. Um, the afternoon wave
- 1:51:46Speaker 5: is just getting on, getting started. They're getting out onto
- 1:51:49Speaker 5: the course now. So only half the field has finished
- 1:51:53Speaker 5: for the, for the day. Um, Our first-round leader, Zach Bauchu,
- 1:51:58Speaker 5: who was on a great Oklahoma State University team that
- 1:52:03Speaker 5: included Victor Hovland and Matthew Wolfe. He was the leader
- 1:52:07Speaker 5: after the first day. He was just minus two today,
- 1:52:10Speaker 5: so that puts him at minus 11. He's currently T4
- 1:52:13Speaker 5: as the afternoon wave gets going. And I think that
- 1:52:17Speaker 5: might be indicative of what we will see. Yeah, there's
- 1:52:21Speaker 5: going to be players going low still, but... It's going
- 1:52:25Speaker 5: to spread out, and the course is firming up. It's
- 1:52:32Speaker 5: baking the moisture out of the greens after the rain
- 1:52:35Speaker 5: a couple nights ago. So as the course gets firmer,
- 1:52:39Speaker 5: scores are going to creep upward.
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: Okay, so the advantage on a Thursday and a Friday
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: was to be in that early wave, and now if
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: you're in this afternoon heat, so to speak, you should–
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: You're not going to get as friendly a greens is
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: what you're telling me.
- 1:52:56Speaker 5: Yeah, that's exactly true. And you know, the way this
- 1:52:59Speaker 5: works on Thursday and Friday, each week at each tournament
- 1:53:02Speaker 5: on the PGA tour, um, the, the field will be
- 1:53:05Speaker 5: split in half and everybody in the field will get
- 1:53:08Speaker 5: a morning wave start. Everybody will get an afternoon wave start.
- 1:53:12Speaker 5: Everybody will get a start on the number one tee.
- 1:53:14Speaker 5: Everybody will get a start on the number 10 tee.
- 1:53:17Speaker 5: So they mix it up so that everybody gets essentially
- 1:53:20Speaker 5: the same experience. But the reality is, if you are
- 1:53:24Speaker 5: on the side of the draw that favors the conditions
- 1:53:27Speaker 5: of the time, that can make a difference. And we
- 1:53:29Speaker 5: really see this. play itself out in situations like the
- 1:53:34Speaker 5: British Open, where weather can be such a big part
- 1:53:37Speaker 5: of the story. But here it is, if you're able
- 1:53:40Speaker 5: to get the greens when they're more receptive before they
- 1:53:44Speaker 5: bake out in the sun. And so far, it's shown
- 1:53:49Speaker 5: that that really mattered more yesterday than today.
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: You're very familiar with this course.
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: Do they change the whole layout significantly? When it's a
- 1:54:00Speaker 2: PGA Tour and you're putting your best foot forward and
- 1:54:03Speaker 2: maybe you want to make it as challenging as the
- 1:54:05Speaker 2: course possibly can be, do they do anything special down
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: there at Black Desert?
- 1:54:11Speaker 5: No, they don't, and the reason is this course was
- 1:54:14Speaker 5: set up to where the main feature of the course
- 1:54:17Speaker 5: is the black rock, and nobody's moving that. There's nothing
- 1:54:21Speaker 5: you can do with it. You can't grow it or
- 1:54:25Speaker 5: cut it down.
- 1:54:26Speaker 7: It just is there.
- 1:54:27Speaker 5: So interesting development of the experience with the Black Rock.
- 1:54:32Speaker 5: The very first year this tournament was played three years ago,
- 1:54:35Speaker 5: that week the field set an all-time PGA Tour record
- 1:54:40Speaker 5: for the most penalty shots by the field for the week.
- 1:54:43Speaker 5: They had 202 penalty shots on the week. Well, people
- 1:54:48Speaker 5: learned from that, and they learned not to be getting
- 1:54:51Speaker 5: all jiggy with the black rock. Hit away from it.
- 1:54:55Speaker 5: Don't try to hit hero shots because there's just no
- 1:54:59Speaker 5: joy to be had, no forgiveness at all in the rocks.
- 1:55:03Speaker 5: And so the field is learning to hit away from it,
- 1:55:08Speaker 5: and that's made a big difference in the scoring as well.
- 1:55:12Speaker 2: Paul Pugmire is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: show talking about the PGA tour being here in Utah
- 1:55:18Speaker 2: at the black desert championship down in Ivan's. Uh, we
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: saw the projected cut line, uh, with scores going low,
- 1:55:26Speaker 2: it's four under right now is the projected cut line. And, uh,
- 1:55:31Speaker 2: Tony fee now, who's obviously a local favorite is just
- 1:55:34Speaker 2: under that, even though he's playing pretty well, he's through 17.
- 1:55:38Speaker 2: It looks like, and two under for the day, uh, Potentially,
- 1:55:42Speaker 2: unless he can have a miraculous 18, might miss the cut,
- 1:55:45Speaker 2: even though he's under par.
- 1:55:48Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:55:49Speaker 5: So Tony needs at least a birdie on 18. I
- 1:55:52Speaker 5: think he might need an eagle. 18 is a gettable
- 1:55:54Speaker 5: par 5. Now, there are ways to get sideways with
- 1:55:58Speaker 5: the hole.
- 1:55:58Speaker 4: There always are.
- 1:56:00Speaker 5: But Tony needs a strong finish on 18 to have
- 1:56:03Speaker 5: any chance of playing the weekend.
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: What about the other guys, the sort of– Not just
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: local connections, but your favorites, the ones you had an
- 1:56:13Speaker 2: eye on saying, all right, I know this guy's playing
- 1:56:15Speaker 2: style and I know that this course matches up with it.
- 1:56:18Speaker 2: Are you getting your expectations met when it comes to
- 1:56:22Speaker 2: who's near the top or within striking distance?
- 1:56:25Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:56:26Speaker 5: Let's talk about some of the local guys. First of all,
- 1:56:28Speaker 5: there are 10 Utah players in the field, and they
- 1:56:32Speaker 5: got in through a variety of methods, including two Utah
- 1:56:36Speaker 5: players played themselves in on the Monday qualifier, which is
- 1:56:40Speaker 5: stupid hard. It's an absolute sprint. It's like running a
- 1:56:45Speaker 5: 100-yard dash fast. And there's no margin for any slight
- 1:56:49Speaker 5: little air, but both Carson Lundell and red Rasmussen Monday
- 1:56:53Speaker 5: their way in. But the, among the Utah players that
- 1:56:58Speaker 5: I really had my eye on, of course, you know,
- 1:57:00Speaker 5: Tony Finau, it's really cool that he's in the field
- 1:57:03Speaker 5: this year, Patrick Fishburne, a big hitter and a play
- 1:57:07Speaker 5: a player who really needs a good showing. But Zach
- 1:57:10Speaker 5: Blair is the one who really had my attention. because
- 1:57:13Speaker 5: two reasons. This is a course that sets up well
- 1:57:15Speaker 5: for his game that requires that you keep the ball
- 1:57:18Speaker 5: in front of you. And on grass, Zach is exceptionally
- 1:57:21Speaker 5: good at that. And the other thing is in the
- 1:57:23Speaker 5: first two planes of this tournament, this is the third
- 1:57:26Speaker 5: year Zach has made the cut each year. He's the
- 1:57:30Speaker 5: only Utah player to have done that, and so he's
- 1:57:32Speaker 5: already got a strong record here. Otherwise, for non-Utah players,
- 1:57:36Speaker 5: this is really fun. I had my eye on Max
- 1:57:39Speaker 5: Homa coming in. First of all, Max is just so
- 1:57:43Speaker 5: easy to like, but again, a player who generally keeps
- 1:57:46Speaker 5: the ball in front of him, and I thought, gosh,
- 1:57:48Speaker 5: his game might play real well here, and that's proving
- 1:57:51Speaker 5: to be the case. He's minus 9 through 36 holes.
- 1:57:55Speaker 5: He was in the morning wave this morning. He is finished.
- 1:57:58Speaker 5: And so he sits at T seven as we talk
- 1:58:00Speaker 5: through this and definitely making the weekend and he will
- 1:58:05Speaker 5: be within reach going into Saturday's round.
- 1:58:09Speaker 2: Big picture. PGA being in Utah, obviously this state, whether
- 1:58:14Speaker 2: it's northern Utah, southern Utah, the Salt Lake Valley, getting
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: a little bit more attention nationally, more people moving here,
- 1:58:22Speaker 2: growing from an economy standpoint, but the sports atmosphere in
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: Utah is with now an NHL team thriving, and they
- 1:58:31Speaker 2: just announced a UFL team, and Major League Baseball is
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: supposed to be coming. And look, Black Desert is not
- 1:58:37Speaker 2: the only great golf course in the state of Utah.
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: Is the success of this tournament, or this tournament continuing
- 1:58:46Speaker 2: to be successful, is it going to bring more of
- 1:58:48Speaker 2: this to our state and to the sports culture in
- 1:58:51Speaker 2: our state?
- 1:58:52Speaker 5: It darn well could in no small part because there
- 1:58:56Speaker 5: are some really top-notch championship courses that are being developed.
- 1:59:01Speaker 5: And interestingly, they're being developed by Reef Capital, which is
- 1:59:05Speaker 5: the group behind Black Desert. And so very clearly people
- 1:59:09Speaker 5: who know what the devil they're doing and have proved it.
- 1:59:14Speaker 5: Having said that, whenever you're looking at bringing a tour
- 1:59:17Speaker 5: event to a facility of any kind, Yes, you look
- 1:59:21Speaker 5: at the course, and yes, we really focus on what's
- 1:59:24Speaker 5: inside the ropes. But it's what's outside the ropes that
- 1:59:27Speaker 5: can make a difference between the tournament being successful or not.
- 1:59:31Speaker 5: The infrastructure that can support what comes with this traveling circus.
- 1:59:36Speaker 5: And Black Desert is a resort course, and the resort
- 1:59:39Speaker 5: is right handy here on property. Really, you know, it's
- 1:59:43Speaker 5: got hotel rooms, top-end restaurants. It's got support facilities for
- 1:59:47Speaker 5: the families and the players. And so you look at
- 1:59:50Speaker 5: the big picture of what the facility has, and it
- 1:59:54Speaker 5: really meets up well with what's required when the PGA
- 1:59:58Speaker 5: Tour comes to town. And so that has to be
- 2:00:00Speaker 5: included in the calculation as well.
- 2:00:04Speaker 2: Who's going to end up winning this thing, Paul?
- 2:00:06Speaker 5: Oh my gosh. What a great question. Um, I will
- 2:00:09Speaker 5: tell you right now, the one I am cheering for
- 2:00:12Speaker 5: there too, in particular, uh, and it's for personal reasons
- 2:00:16Speaker 5: right now in solo second is Kevin Streelman. And Kevin
- 2:00:21Speaker 5: has been a journeyman player on tour for several years.
- 2:00:24Speaker 5: He's won two times, but he's 47 years old. He's
- 2:00:27Speaker 5: been on the tour for 20 some years. Um, getting
- 2:00:31Speaker 5: ready to play on the champions tour, of course, but
- 2:00:34Speaker 5: there he is solo second after two rounds, he's still
- 2:00:37Speaker 5: out there playing. He's got a couple of holes left. Um, but, uh, Streelman,
- 2:00:41Speaker 5: it was announced last night at an event. I was
- 2:00:43Speaker 5: at the Streelman is now a member of Marcella, uh,
- 2:00:48Speaker 5: by Jordan L in near park city. And Marcella, again,
- 2:00:52Speaker 5: of course, it was developed by Reef Capital. So Strillman
- 2:00:56Speaker 5: is now a Utahan. He's moving to Utah. We're so
- 2:01:00Speaker 5: glad to have him. And then the other one is
- 2:01:03Speaker 5: Austin Smotherman. This one is personal to me. Austin Smotherman
- 2:01:06Speaker 5: is a former First Tee kid. He grew up being
- 2:01:09Speaker 5: in the First Tee in Sacramento. And so I love
- 2:01:11Speaker 5: it when the First Tee kids go out and do
- 2:01:13Speaker 5: big things and make noise.
- 2:01:16Speaker 2: You love it. Enjoy the time down there. It's great
- 2:01:20Speaker 2: to see our home state being put on display. I
- 2:01:24Speaker 2: hope the scores continue to be low through the weekend.
- 2:01:27Speaker 2: Maybe not this low, but it's sexy seeing these big numbers, right?
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: Like these minus 12s, minus 14s, minus 16s.
- 2:01:36Speaker 5: It is. And it's a lot of fun and it's
- 2:01:38Speaker 5: fun to see players hit great shots and make birdies,
- 2:01:41Speaker 5: but they, they, they have turned off the sprinkler system.
- 2:01:45Speaker 5: There won't be any more of that this week. And
- 2:01:47Speaker 5: so it will, it will absolutely be the scores will
- 2:01:53Speaker 5: be inching up as this course firms up.
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: All right, Paul, appreciate your time as always.
- 2:01:57Speaker 2: Thank you, sir.
- 2:01:59Speaker 5: Thank you so much.
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: Paul Pugmire. You can listen to him right here on
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: Saturday mornings.
- 2:02:10Speaker 6: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:02:13Speaker 6: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM. The tradition
- 2:02:19Speaker 6: of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances.
- 2:02:24Speaker 2: I got a lot of problems with you people.
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: Now, you're going to hear about it.
- 2:02:33Speaker 2: 877-353-0700. Time for the airing of grievances on the Sean
- 2:02:38Speaker 2: O'Connell Show. Unburden yourself. Get whatever's bothering you off your chest,
- 2:02:42Speaker 2: off your mind. Put it out there. Maybe you just
- 2:02:44Speaker 2: need someone to hear what you're saying and validate your feelings.
- 2:02:51Speaker 1: I'm actually a little nervous about this.
- 2:02:52Speaker 2: I might be the one who deserves the grievance.
- 2:02:56Speaker 1: I don't think so, but.
- 2:03:00Speaker 2: Let me tell you what happened. I'm driving down to
- 2:03:02Speaker 2: the Utah Mammoth game last night.
- 2:03:04Speaker 1: Very excited.
- 2:03:06Speaker 2: We're meeting some friends, going on tickets, going as fans
- 2:03:12Speaker 2: instead of on the press pass.
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: I'm with my wife, okay? We drive down out of
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: the avenues.
- 2:03:18Speaker 2: We take North Temple down to the, whatever the proper
- 2:03:23Speaker 2: name for that gigantic parking lot, Kitty Corner, to the
- 2:03:27Speaker 2: northeast of the Delta Center is. Now, anyone who's parked
- 2:03:32Speaker 2: there knows that the veteran move is you drive around
- 2:03:37Speaker 2: it first, okay? If you have the time, you drive
- 2:03:40Speaker 2: around the edges on the outside before you enter the
- 2:03:43Speaker 2: parking lot because it's pay parking, right? But there's free
- 2:03:47Speaker 2: parking on the street after normal business hours. After 6 p.m.,
- 2:03:53Speaker 2: you can pull into any of those, and you're lucky
- 2:03:55Speaker 2: if they're open, right?
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: Most of the time they're not.
- 2:03:59Speaker 2: But if you're cheap like me, if you're a spendthrift,
- 2:04:03Speaker 2: then you got to at least check, right? So we're
- 2:04:07Speaker 2: coming off North Temple onto the east side. And if
- 2:04:11Speaker 2: you know the parking lot, you know that there's this
- 2:04:13Speaker 2: one because they put in those bike lanes with the
- 2:04:15Speaker 2: weird curbs that are like in the middle of the street.
- 2:04:19Speaker 2: There's this one spot that's like directly in the middle,
- 2:04:23Speaker 2: like the center of that expansive sidewalk. There's one spot
- 2:04:28Speaker 2: that is just there.
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: And there's no.
- 2:04:31Speaker 2: You can't park a car in front of it. You
- 2:04:32Speaker 2: can't park a car behind it. It is just lines
- 2:04:35Speaker 2: painted like an island in the ocean. Okay? We make
- 2:04:41Speaker 2: the turn onto the road to the east of that
- 2:04:46Speaker 2: parking lot.
- 2:04:47Speaker 5: And.
- 2:04:49Speaker 2: simultaneously as I'm pulling onto that road, there's a guy
- 2:04:52Speaker 2: in a truck. And if you're out there listening guy
- 2:04:55Speaker 2: in the truck, I heard what you said, buddy. There's
- 2:04:58Speaker 2: a guy in a truck who's backing out. Okay.
- 2:05:02Speaker 1: I'm, I have the right of way. I'm on the street.
- 2:05:06Speaker 2: He's got to wait for me before he can back
- 2:05:09Speaker 2: out of the parking lot. You're not supposed to back
- 2:05:11Speaker 2: out of that parking lot. First of all, I have
- 2:05:14Speaker 2: the right of way. I'm on the street.
- 2:05:17Speaker 1: I'm going.
- 2:05:18Speaker 2: I'm recognizing that that spot is there. This individual is
- 2:05:22Speaker 2: backing out of the parking lot. Again, why are you
- 2:05:25Speaker 2: backing out of the parking lot?
- 2:05:27Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 2:05:28Speaker 2: It's not my business. Why are you backing out of
- 2:05:30Speaker 2: the parking lot? However, I have right of way from
- 2:05:34Speaker 2: a driver's standpoint, okay? So I go... And he knows
- 2:05:40Speaker 2: I have right away. He stops and waits for me
- 2:05:42Speaker 2: to go past him. I go into the spot, right?
- 2:05:45Speaker 2: It's the last spot. It's the last free parking spot
- 2:05:49Speaker 2: on the street.
- 2:05:49Speaker 1: It's the only one. It's by itself. You can't park
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: in front of it. You can't park behind it.
- 2:05:54Speaker 2: It's not one of these situations where I didn't pull
- 2:05:56Speaker 2: far enough forward. So there's no room behind or I
- 2:06:00Speaker 2: didn't stay far enough back, right? I pulled past this
- 2:06:05Speaker 2: person who had to wait for me to pull past.
- 2:06:07Speaker 2: He's backing out of the parking lot.
- 2:06:08Speaker 1: I go into this spot, right?
- 2:06:11Speaker 4: I park.
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: I'm like, high five to my wife. I'm just like, amazing.
- 2:06:16Speaker 2: How lucky are we that we found this spot? These
- 2:06:18Speaker 2: spots are never open.
- 2:06:21Speaker 5: Yay.
- 2:06:21Speaker 2: We get out and the guy is like, hey, I
- 2:06:25Speaker 2: was pulling in there. I was like, oh, sorry, man,
- 2:06:28Speaker 2: you were backing out of the parking lot. I didn't
- 2:06:34Speaker 2: know you were pulling in here. You were backing out
- 2:06:36Speaker 2: of the parking lot. He's like, I was going there.
- 2:06:40Speaker 2: I'm like, all right, well, I got the spot, sorry.
- 2:06:45Speaker 2: I was like, all right, well, sorry, you were backing
- 2:06:48Speaker 2: out of the parking lot.
- 2:06:49Speaker 1: So we parked. And he hits me with a double F-bombs.
- 2:06:56Speaker 2: And I just laughed because you're not going to upset
- 2:06:59Speaker 2: me with words.
- 2:07:00Speaker 3: And what can you do at that point? You don't
- 2:07:03Speaker 3: want to get into it even verbally in that situation.
- 2:07:07Speaker 3: I'm going to go to the game. I'm going to
- 2:07:09Speaker 3: the game. We're already late to the game. I'm going
- 2:07:11Speaker 3: to the game.
- 2:07:12Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: And he's just like, all right. And just started walking. Now,
- 2:07:18Speaker 1: my wife is a very non-confrontational person.
- 2:07:21Speaker 2: She is deeply, deeply uncomfortable with with the idea that
- 2:07:25Speaker 2: you have inconvenience to anyone else.
- 2:07:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:07:28Speaker 1: And so she's like, you shouldn't have done that. I
- 2:07:30Speaker 1: was like, what are you talking about? Taking the spot.
- 2:07:32Speaker 2: Shouldn't have taken the spot. I'm like, we were the
- 2:07:34Speaker 2: first ones to the spot.
- 2:07:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:07:37Speaker 2: So it's not like he was sitting there with a
- 2:07:39Speaker 2: blinker on waiting for the spot.
- 2:07:41Speaker 3: That was going to be my question. He didn't have
- 2:07:43Speaker 3: his blinker on. It's like the universal dibs.
- 2:07:46Speaker 2: No, he was, he was, he was in the, he
- 2:07:49Speaker 2: was going into the parking lot from the East side entrance.
- 2:07:52Speaker 2: And he, He had stopped and was backing out for
- 2:07:56Speaker 2: whatever reason.
- 2:07:57Speaker 1: I don't know what the reason is.
- 2:07:58Speaker 2: Maybe he doesn't realize that it cost $ 40 to park there, whatever.
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: So I pulled into the.
- 2:08:03Speaker 2: Spot and then any like regret I may have felt
- 2:08:07Speaker 2: for accidentally stealing and I'm throwing up the air quotes.
- 2:08:10Speaker 2: I'm not stealing anything. It's up for grabs for taking
- 2:08:13Speaker 2: the spot. Anything evaporates instantaneously. As soon as he escalates
- 2:08:19Speaker 2: to like the foulest language he could use at me.
- 2:08:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:08:24Speaker 1: And he wants a response from me and I'm not
- 2:08:26Speaker 1: going to get him one. So I just laughed.
- 2:08:27Speaker 2: Okay. And just kept walking. And my wife was like, no, you,
- 2:08:31Speaker 2: we shouldn't have done that. I was like, what are
- 2:08:32Speaker 2: you talking about? We just took a spot that was open.
- 2:08:35Speaker 2: That's all we did. It's not his spot. He didn't,
- 2:08:38Speaker 2: he was behind us in line.
- 2:08:40Speaker 3: He didn't indicate that he was going to take that spot.
- 2:08:43Speaker 3: He just, he thought, oh, that's open. I'm going to
- 2:08:45Speaker 3: take it. That like, you have no response. I don't think,
- 2:08:48Speaker 3: I don't think you need to, I don't think you
- 2:08:51Speaker 3: need to feel like that's a grievance against you.
- 2:08:53Speaker 1: I will say this. I have been guilty. Probably.
- 2:08:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:08:58Speaker 1: Grievance against me. I have been guilty of, I was
- 2:09:02Speaker 1: one time.
- 2:09:05Speaker 3: I was closest to an open spot, but another guy
- 2:09:10Speaker 3: turned on their blinker first. I went ahead and took
- 2:09:13Speaker 3: the spot anyway. Oh, they were really mad.
- 2:09:16Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:09:17Speaker 3: Now that thankfully all they did was honk and drive away.
- 2:09:21Speaker 3: but I did not have a, have a confrontation like
- 2:09:25Speaker 3: face to face. Like you did. I probably, yeah, I
- 2:09:28Speaker 3: would not have, but I was like, I was right there.
- 2:09:33Speaker 3: You just turned it on like a second before I
- 2:09:36Speaker 3: started pulling in. Well, look, there was no, what I
- 2:09:39Speaker 3: kind of used to justify.
- 2:09:40Speaker 2: And look, he was backing out. I didn't know why
- 2:09:44Speaker 2: he was backing out of the parking lot. And then
- 2:09:46Speaker 2: he told me I was going there. I was like,
- 2:09:48Speaker 2: all right, well, no way you could have known that
- 2:09:50Speaker 2: I went there.
- 2:09:50Speaker 1: We already parked.
- 2:09:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:09:52Speaker 1: And at that point, like I.
- 2:09:56Speaker 2: Is, is the rule of common courtesy to just be like, Oh,
- 2:09:59Speaker 2: if you had undeclared intent in your mind that you
- 2:10:03Speaker 2: were going to park in that spot, it belongs to you.
- 2:10:05Speaker 4: No.
- 2:10:06Speaker 2: So if I was in his case and somebody was
- 2:10:09Speaker 2: in front of me in line, so to speak, and
- 2:10:11Speaker 2: they took the parking spot I wanted, I'd.
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: Be like, God dang it.
- 2:10:15Speaker 2: I wanted that spot. I wouldn't roll my window down
- 2:10:18Speaker 2: and start dropping F bombs on people. And by the way,
- 2:10:22Speaker 2: public service announcement, sir, and anyone else who's prone to
- 2:10:26Speaker 2: doing something like this, I know you wanted a confrontation,
- 2:10:30Speaker 2: but here's the thing.
- 2:10:31Speaker 1: You don't want a confrontation with someone like me.
- 2:10:34Speaker 2: It's a, it's a, the rule in today's society is
- 2:10:39Speaker 2: sometimes you just have to move on because you never
- 2:10:42Speaker 2: know what another person is like able to do.
- 2:10:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:10:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:10:47Speaker 3: He clearly didn't know that you were a former pro fighter,
- 2:10:52Speaker 3: but he doesn't need to know like that needs to
- 2:10:54Speaker 3: be the assumption is I have no idea who this
- 2:10:56Speaker 3: person is.
- 2:10:56Speaker 2: So I have no idea what I might do.
- 2:10:59Speaker 1: As a knife. I don't know if this person has
- 2:11:00Speaker 1: a gun.
- 2:11:01Speaker 2: I don't know if this person is just a lunatic
- 2:11:02Speaker 2: who's going to bite my nose off.
- 2:11:04Speaker 4: Yep.
- 2:11:04Speaker 2: It like I'm just like. You are trying to deliver
- 2:11:09Speaker 2: me fighting words? You should not do that. Not just
- 2:11:12Speaker 2: to me.
- 2:11:13Speaker 1: You shouldn't do it to James. You shouldn't do it
- 2:11:15Speaker 1: to any random person.
- 2:11:16Speaker 2: You shouldn't do it.
- 2:11:17Speaker 3: You don't know what I'm capable of, all right? You
- 2:11:20Speaker 3: don't know how high I can fly.
- 2:11:22Speaker 4: So it was.
- 2:11:24Speaker 2: grievance for me because ruined the whole first period because
- 2:11:28Speaker 2: it became an argument between me and my wife where
- 2:11:30Speaker 2: she was like, you shouldn't have done that. I'm like, she,
- 2:11:32Speaker 2: so for her, it's a grievance against you. I don't,
- 2:11:36Speaker 2: I don't think that it is. And I was just like,
- 2:11:38Speaker 2: for me, I'm like, that was not a rules violation there.
- 2:11:41Speaker 1: And when he tried to escalate, I deescalated. So it's
- 2:11:44Speaker 1: a double.
- 2:11:45Speaker 2: Okay. For me.
- 2:11:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:11:46Speaker 1: And so that was, that's my grievance.
- 2:11:49Speaker 2: The entitlement to a parking spot that you don't... It's
- 2:11:52Speaker 2: a public parking spot. Knock it off. And I hope
- 2:11:54Speaker 2: you're listening in your weird Toyota Tacoma with all the
- 2:11:59Speaker 2: camping accessories on it.
- 2:12:01Speaker 1: Don't talk to people like that.
- 2:12:03Speaker 3: That might be my favorite new bit of yours. You
- 2:12:06Speaker 3: described the vehicle of the guy who flipped you off
- 2:12:11Speaker 3: or who cursed you when you're on your bike.
- 2:12:14Speaker 2: I think you need to always... Flippantly describe people's.
- 2:12:18Speaker 1: Vehicles, wouldn't you?
- 2:12:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:12:20Speaker 2: I know what your vehicle looks like. I don't know
- 2:12:22Speaker 2: what your face looks like. I know what your voice
- 2:12:23Speaker 2: sounds like. And I know you use words that you're
- 2:12:27Speaker 2: not supposed to use anymore that start with F.
- 2:12:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:12:30Speaker 1: I know that, sir. Naughty words.
- 2:12:31Speaker 2: Naughty words.
- 2:12:32Speaker 4: I could get you.
- 2:12:33Speaker 2: Canceled, buddy.
- 2:12:34Speaker 1: Shame, shame, shame. 877-353-0700.
- 2:12:37Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:12:37Speaker 1: Here's a great grievance. Oh, Rick from Vernal.
- 2:12:42Speaker 5: Brick.
- 2:12:44Speaker 2: Brick Tamden. Is that you?
- 2:12:46Speaker 1: Welcome to the show.
- 2:12:46Speaker 2: Brick got you. Hey, I, I want to, I want
- 2:12:53Speaker 2: to share a grievance against slot.
- 2:12:56Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:12:56Speaker 1: This isn't a personal thing about sly and Spence, but
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: every time they refer to Braden pagan, they call him
- 2:13:04Speaker 1: Brandon pagan and it's driving me nuts. but it's like,
- 2:13:09Speaker 1: it's not a Polynesian name. It's not a, it's just
- 2:13:12Speaker 1: a simple name, but they call him Brandon every time.
- 2:13:15Speaker 7: And it drives me nuts.
- 2:13:16Speaker 5: All right.
- 2:13:17Speaker 1: I'm going to pass that on my call.
- 2:13:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:13:19Speaker 1: I'm going to pass that on.
- 2:13:20Speaker 2: Spencer's going to be here in like five minutes. I'm
- 2:13:22Speaker 2: going to pass that on to him.
- 2:13:23Speaker 3: He, he likes to listen to airing of grievances segments.
- 2:13:26Speaker 3: So he, he probably just heard that brick and by
- 2:13:28Speaker 3: the way, brick calling from Vernal.
- 2:13:31Speaker 1: I love that. Dinosaur land.
- 2:13:32Speaker 3: Yeah, so that's a ways out there for our signal
- 2:13:36Speaker 3: to carry. Shout out to you guys out there in Vernal.
- 2:13:39Speaker 2: Shout out to the engineers for making sure the antenna
- 2:13:42Speaker 2: is operating. Shout out to Vernal. Next time, Brick, bring
- 2:13:46Speaker 2: me an Allosaurus tooth, please. It's a valid grievance. It's
- 2:13:54Speaker 2: one of those things that.
- 2:13:56Speaker 3: we'll have to see when we, when we bring it
- 2:13:58Speaker 3: to Spence's attention, if he didn't just hear it now,
- 2:14:00Speaker 3: he'll bring it to our attention.
- 2:14:01Speaker 4: Maybe.
- 2:14:02Speaker 3: I wonder if it, if it's one of those things
- 2:14:04Speaker 3: that isn't going to be helped. Um, it's just, no,
- 2:14:08Speaker 3: it has some kind of, some kind of tick or whatever.
- 2:14:11Speaker 3: I see, I see something and I, it's just a
- 2:14:13Speaker 3: habit now to say it wrong.
- 2:14:14Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 2:14:15Speaker 2: So, uh, There are some names that are similar to
- 2:14:18Speaker 2: other names. Now, the name Brendan also exists. Yeah, Brendan
- 2:14:22Speaker 2: and Brandon, that's a little more forgivable.
- 2:14:24Speaker 1: Because then you could kind of fake it. No, I
- 2:14:26Speaker 1: was saying Brendan. It sounded like Brandon. Oh, I meant Brendan.
- 2:14:29Speaker 1: You can get it right. Braden is Braden.
- 2:14:32Speaker 4: Okay?
- 2:14:33Speaker 1: It's Braden Pagan. All right.
- 2:14:36Speaker 2: Here's a grievance.
- 2:14:37Speaker 1: Grievance today.
- 2:14:38Speaker 2: Uh-oh. Grievance today is about my wife. And it's hard
- 2:14:42Speaker 2: to admit that I'll ask her, what do you want
- 2:14:43Speaker 2: to eat? And she'll say, I don't care anywhere. Sounds good.
- 2:14:46Speaker 2: So I picked my first choice thinking I made this easy.
- 2:14:48Speaker 2: Then she says, I'm really not in the mood for that. Okay.
- 2:14:51Speaker 1: No problem.
- 2:14:51Speaker 2: I named another restaurant.
- 2:14:52Speaker 6: Nope.
- 2:14:53Speaker 2: Another one.
- 2:14:53Speaker 4: Nope.
- 2:14:54Speaker 1: This goes for the.
- 2:14:55Speaker 2: Next 10 minutes until somehow named practically every restaurant in
- 2:14:58Speaker 2: Utah County. And then just when I'm ready to give up,
- 2:15:00Speaker 2: she goes, you know where I'd like to go. And
- 2:15:03Speaker 2: it's the one restaurant I somehow forgot to mention. My
- 2:15:06Speaker 2: grievance is simple. If you actually have a restaurant in mind,
- 2:15:09Speaker 2: please just tell me because I don't care. Apparently it
- 2:15:12Speaker 2: means I already know exactly where I want to go
- 2:15:15Speaker 2: and I'm going to make you guess. Very good.
- 2:15:19Speaker 1: That yes. Very involved.
- 2:15:21Speaker 2: We've all, everyone who's ever been in any kind of
- 2:15:24Speaker 2: friendship or relationship has had that exact experience.
- 2:15:27Speaker 1: I don't care. What do you feel like eating?
- 2:15:29Speaker 2: It doesn't matter.
- 2:15:30Speaker 1: How about tacos?
- 2:15:31Speaker 5: No.
- 2:15:31Speaker 2: How about pizza?
- 2:15:32Speaker 4: No.
- 2:15:33Speaker 2: How about sushi?
- 2:15:34Speaker 5: No.
- 2:15:34Speaker 1: How about a burger?
- 2:15:35Speaker 5: No.
- 2:15:36Speaker 2: How about a steak?
- 2:15:37Speaker 4: No.
- 2:15:38Speaker 1: I've already named everything. You know what I really like?
- 2:15:41Speaker 1: Some pho.
- 2:15:42Speaker 2: I want some pho from this one particular place. Oh,
- 2:15:46Speaker 2: so you do care and you care very much.
- 2:15:49Speaker 1: That's an all-timer. Thank you for some ramen.
- 2:15:52Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 2:15:54Speaker 1: Very relatable.
- 2:15:55Speaker 3: And I'll say this for anyone who's new to a relationship,
- 2:16:01Speaker 3: particularly with a woman, if they say they're not hungry.
- 2:16:06Speaker 3: And so you only get something you can don't get
- 2:16:09Speaker 3: mad when they eat some of your food.
- 2:16:11Speaker 2: That's just, that's just part of the deal. Uh, grievance
- 2:16:14Speaker 2: with commentators, nonsense during a broadcast. Looking at you, Joey Votto.
- 2:16:19Speaker 2: Also Alec poem, get a haircut during the off season.
- 2:16:22Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:16:22Speaker 1: A little group baseball grievances. All right.
- 2:16:25Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:16:25Speaker 3: I feel like as far as Philly's hair goes, what
- 2:16:29Speaker 3: is it? Marsh that has the hair that looks like his,
- 2:16:32Speaker 3: he soaks it in a Marsh before every game, like
- 2:16:35Speaker 3: disgusting hair.
- 2:16:36Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 2:16:37Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 2:16:37Speaker 1: Not Marsh. It's Reese Hopkins.
- 2:16:39Speaker 2: Reese Hopkins. This is a baseball thing more than anything.
- 2:16:43Speaker 2: What's the guy with the weird curly hair. It'll come
- 2:16:47Speaker 2: to me. It just, his name was just baseball. Baseball
- 2:16:50Speaker 2: hair is Dallas Braden.
- 2:16:51Speaker 4: Crazy. Oh yeah.
- 2:16:52Speaker 2: And the weird, just dude, you're on TV. Don't look
- 2:16:57Speaker 2: like you're a hacky sack professional. All right. 877-353-0700 to
- 2:17:01Speaker 2: air your grievances. Kurt Snedeker says my grievance is trying
- 2:17:05Speaker 2: to call a customer service number answered by an AI bot.
- 2:17:08Speaker 2: And no matter how many times I say, and eventually scream,
- 2:17:11Speaker 2: please get me a human customer service rep. Keeps repeating
- 2:17:14Speaker 2: the same message over and over and over. Also having
- 2:17:16Speaker 2: a birdie putt and then tapping it in for bogey.
- 2:17:22Speaker 1: That's a grievance. Look, I think I might have expressed
- 2:17:27Speaker 1: this one already.
- 2:17:28Speaker 2: My favorite customer service tool that I've ever experienced, Delta
- 2:17:34Speaker 2: used to have a chat feature where you would just
- 2:17:37Speaker 2: text the problem you had and they would connect you
- 2:17:39Speaker 2: with a real person in a real place. and they could,
- 2:17:44Speaker 2: and they would have real conversation with you and they
- 2:17:47Speaker 2: replace that with an AI engine.
- 2:17:49Speaker 1: And it is so vastly inferior.
- 2:17:53Speaker 2: It, the gulf between the customer service you used to
- 2:17:55Speaker 2: get from the chat feature with real people and this
- 2:18:00Speaker 2: concierge robot is so far that it is It is
- 2:18:07Speaker 2: Mount Everest to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
- 2:18:10Speaker 1: It is terrible.
- 2:18:12Speaker 2: And they're doing it to save costs, and they're doing
- 2:18:15Speaker 2: it because everyone's getting on this AI wave. And that
- 2:18:17Speaker 2: means people lost their jobs over it, too. So you
- 2:18:20Speaker 2: got an unhappy customer, and you got an unhappy employee.
- 2:18:23Speaker 1: Not worth it.
- 2:18:24Speaker 2: Grievance. Jay, my grievance is how crappy and BYU and
- 2:18:28Speaker 2: Utah fans are to each other. I think we're one
- 2:18:30Speaker 2: of the worst rivalries in the nation when it comes
- 2:18:31Speaker 2: to each other's fan base. It goes both ways. They're
- 2:18:33Speaker 2: just so obnoxious and ignorant to each other. It's ugly
- 2:18:36Speaker 2: and exhausting. Go Utes.
- 2:18:38Speaker 1: Jay, thank you for the text. Just get off the internet.
- 2:18:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:18:41Speaker 1: That's where it is. That's just what that's. It's only
- 2:18:44Speaker 1: on the internet.
- 2:18:45Speaker 2: It's only the anonymity of the message boards and the
- 2:18:47Speaker 2: Twitters and the comment sections when Utah and BYU fans
- 2:18:51Speaker 2: are in the same place, talking to each other face
- 2:18:54Speaker 2: to face, or they're playing on the same church ball
- 2:18:56Speaker 2: team or they're at work together. There's banter back and forth,
- 2:19:00Speaker 2: and that's as far as it goes. The internet is
- 2:19:03Speaker 2: where it's ugly and gross and terrible.
- 2:19:05Speaker 3: Well, and we can say this firsthand, because the old
- 2:19:07Speaker 3: sister station, ESPN The Fan, has Cougar Sports with Ben Criddle.
- 2:19:11Speaker 2: That's right.
- 2:19:12Speaker 3: And the producers there, not just Ben, they've grew up
- 2:19:18Speaker 3: BYU fans, and we have delightful conversations, even if not
- 2:19:23Speaker 3: some little playful banter.
- 2:19:25Speaker 1: You're absolutely right. It's an internet problem.
- 2:19:28Speaker 3: And also I can guarantee you it's probably not the
- 2:19:31Speaker 3: worst in that regard in the nation. Like there are,
- 2:19:34Speaker 3: that's just rivalry banter all over, over the nation, particularly
- 2:19:38Speaker 3: in college football.
- 2:19:40Speaker 2: Grievance against me says, Derek, you don't really care about
- 2:19:43Speaker 2: the spot you can afford. If you could afford season
- 2:19:45Speaker 2: tickets to any sporting event, you can afford paid parking.
- 2:19:48Speaker 1: Stop being so cheap. Absolutely not.
- 2:19:52Speaker 2: No, if there's, if one of the street parking, take it, look,
- 2:19:57Speaker 2: Here's one thing. The richest people on planet earth still
- 2:20:00Speaker 2: love three free things. Okay. They love free parking. They
- 2:20:05Speaker 2: love free food and they love free t-shirts that, and
- 2:20:09Speaker 2: you're the perfect person to speak to that. Now, look,
- 2:20:12Speaker 2: I am not close to being the richest person, even
- 2:20:15Speaker 2: at the Delta center last night.
- 2:20:16Speaker 5: Right.
- 2:20:17Speaker 2: But if I could afford season tickets, it's because I
- 2:20:21Speaker 2: worked for it.
- 2:20:23Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:20:24Speaker 3: And maybe because you're saving money by not paying parking.
- 2:20:28Speaker 1: I have three jobs. Okay.
- 2:20:29Speaker 2: So I'm going to get the free parking when I want,
- 2:20:32Speaker 2: if I can.
- 2:20:33Speaker 1: And guess what?
- 2:20:34Speaker 2: If I wasn't able to get that spot, I would
- 2:20:36Speaker 2: have pulled in and I would have parked and I'd
- 2:20:38Speaker 2: have been like, dang it.
- 2:20:38Speaker 1: I had to, I missed the free parking.
- 2:20:40Speaker 2: I had to spend 40 bucks on parking, but I
- 2:20:42Speaker 2: would have also been like, I can handle it.
- 2:20:45Speaker 1: That's fine.
- 2:20:45Speaker 2: It's a drop in the bucket because this night out
- 2:20:48Speaker 2: already costs.
- 2:20:50Speaker 1: $ 800 when you're going to a hockey game. But guess what?
- 2:20:53Speaker 2: When I can get the free thing, including the free
- 2:20:55Speaker 2: food or the free t-shirt or the cool little commemorative
- 2:20:58Speaker 2: towel that says home opener. Yeah.
- 2:21:01Speaker 1: I love free stuff. Did you get people way richer
- 2:21:04Speaker 1: than me?
- 2:21:04Speaker 4: Do too.
- 2:21:05Speaker 1: You, you, you got there late.
- 2:21:08Speaker 3: I saw the season ticket holders got the, they got
- 2:21:10Speaker 3: like hydro jugs.
- 2:21:11Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:21:12Speaker 1: So you could, you could, this might be someone's grievance.
- 2:21:15Speaker 2: You could buy a, an exclusive Utah mammoth hydro jug.
- 2:21:18Speaker 1: Oh, it was like option to buy option to buy.
- 2:21:20Speaker 2: Gotcha. And then they're refillable. You get a discount on
- 2:21:23Speaker 2: the refills all season long. Okay. Yeah. They've had that.
- 2:21:26Speaker 1: For a while.
- 2:21:27Speaker 3: It may have been a different brand. I think I,
- 2:21:28Speaker 3: I feel like this year was the first year I
- 2:21:30Speaker 3: saw hydro jug.
- 2:21:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:21:32Speaker 2: And look, they were really cool looking. I got the
- 2:21:34Speaker 2: email about it option to buy, and then you could
- 2:21:36Speaker 2: pick it up there. There were people, James, who bought
- 2:21:39Speaker 2: 50 of them.
- 2:21:40Speaker 4: Wow.
- 2:21:41Speaker 1: I saw like probably to resell them.
- 2:21:43Speaker 2: I saw, I saw like, I saw grandmas, like women
- 2:21:47Speaker 2: that looked like my mother carrying. I'm not exaggerating like
- 2:21:52Speaker 2: hefty garbage bags full of, they came in a box
- 2:21:55Speaker 2: and I counted one woman had 30.
- 2:21:58Speaker 1: I counted.
- 2:21:59Speaker 2: She was standing in line and they had free engraving
- 2:22:01Speaker 2: on them at the game last night. So people were
- 2:22:03Speaker 2: waiting in this line for hours. I saw the long line.
- 2:22:06Speaker 2: I wondered what it was for. Cause they, it was like,
- 2:22:09Speaker 2: I'm like, they all have their hydro jokes. It must've
- 2:22:11Speaker 2: been the engraving line.
- 2:22:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:22:12Speaker 1: It was to get the engraving.
- 2:22:13Speaker 2: And look, Commemorative things like that, especially with a weird,
- 2:22:16Speaker 2: you know, we love our hydro flasks and our hydro
- 2:22:19Speaker 2: jugs and our water bottles, our water bottles. Like that's
- 2:22:23Speaker 2: a very Utah thing. I applaud you. But the demand
- 2:22:26Speaker 2: for those things was furious and intense. So did you,
- 2:22:30Speaker 2: you didn't end up getting one. We have so many
- 2:22:32Speaker 2: already have. Okay. So you can, if you're watching on YouTube,
- 2:22:36Speaker 2: like a Yeti sponsored the PFL and they would give
- 2:22:40Speaker 2: me one of.
- 2:22:40Speaker 1: These at every show.
- 2:22:42Speaker 2: I have like six of them because I stopped bringing
- 2:22:45Speaker 2: them home because my wife was like, please stop bringing
- 2:22:47Speaker 2: these water bottles on.
- 2:22:48Speaker 1: We have too many. That should be for them.
- 2:22:50Speaker 3: We do the white elephant Christmas time. We do the
- 2:22:54Speaker 3: Yankee swap thing for Christmas party here. You should just
- 2:22:57Speaker 3: give away like here, PFL. People be like, I don't
- 2:23:00Speaker 3: know who.
- 2:23:01Speaker 1: This is from.
- 2:23:02Speaker 3: The only guy who works with PFL, um, Yeah, grievance,
- 2:23:06Speaker 3: and listen, maybe these wonderful, no doubt wonderful old ladies
- 2:23:12Speaker 3: that are collecting, that were buying so many of these,
- 2:23:15Speaker 3: maybe it's for their grandchildren and their children as gifts, okay?
- 2:23:20Speaker 1: I will leave room for that.
- 2:23:21Speaker 3: But I will say this, I think all of us know,
- 2:23:24Speaker 3: and it's not just old, it's not old women, it's
- 2:23:28Speaker 3: a lot of people that will do this. They'll buy
- 2:23:30Speaker 3: things that they know will be in demand, that they
- 2:23:33Speaker 3: have special access to, And then they'll jack up the
- 2:23:37Speaker 3: price so they can make a profit off it.
- 2:23:39Speaker 2: Grievance against that? Did you make that thing?
- 2:23:42Speaker 4: No.
- 2:23:42Speaker 2: Then why should you profit off of it? You can't
- 2:23:45Speaker 2: have a grievance against the free market economy, James.
- 2:23:48Speaker 1: No, grievance against that part of it.
- 2:23:50Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 2:23:50Speaker 1: Sorry, you can't. Sorry, it's supply and demand.
- 2:23:53Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 2:23:54Speaker 1: I'm still airing that. Wealth of nations. Let's go.
- 2:23:57Speaker 3: Not for that particular thing. Like, make your own thing
- 2:24:01Speaker 3: and then sell it.
- 2:24:01Speaker 2: How about that?
- 2:24:03Speaker 1: So your grievance is against.
- 2:24:06Speaker 2: grandmotherly types who don't own manufacturing facilities.
- 2:24:08Speaker 3: My grievance is against people who think that they own
- 2:24:11Speaker 3: that thing.
- 2:24:12Speaker 2: Like when they buy that for yourself, when they, when
- 2:24:15Speaker 2: they buy it, they give it away to somebody.
- 2:24:17Speaker 1: They do own it.
- 2:24:18Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 2:24:20Speaker 1: That's how it works.
- 2:24:21Speaker 2: But that's ridiculous. Please stop.
- 2:24:26Speaker 1: It's supply and demand. So, so here's where.
- 2:24:28Speaker 3: It's the worst thing when it's like at a, we'll
- 2:24:31Speaker 3: say like a TJ Maxx where they only have a
- 2:24:33Speaker 3: finite amount of those, of those things in the store
- 2:24:36Speaker 3: at a limited time. And then someone buys all those
- 2:24:39Speaker 3: because they're going to make a profit off of resale
- 2:24:41Speaker 3: that off the resale market. And then someone who's like,
- 2:24:44Speaker 3: I just want one for myself. They're all gone because
- 2:24:47Speaker 3: you're being a piece of crap.
- 2:24:49Speaker 4: Stop. No. Great.
- 2:24:51Speaker 2: It's with you calling someone a piece of crap because
- 2:24:53Speaker 2: they're using the free market economy in their favor. It's
- 2:24:56Speaker 2: called a hustle, James. This is how like the entire
- 2:24:59Speaker 2: third world works. People buy stuff, and then they resell
- 2:25:04Speaker 2: it for a profit. It's just the way things are.
- 2:25:07Speaker 2: I don't like it.
- 2:25:09Speaker 1: Okay. And you can disagree. That's fine.
- 2:25:14Speaker 2: Whatever happened to bus stop benches? No one can sit
- 2:25:16Speaker 2: and wait for the next bus.
- 2:25:17Speaker 1: What is that? That's the grievance?
- 2:25:20Speaker 2: I didn't know.
- 2:25:22Speaker 1: There's no more bus stop benches?
- 2:25:25Speaker 3: Maybe it's not at every bus stop in the Salt
- 2:25:28Speaker 3: Lake area, but I feel like I've seen some.
- 2:25:31Speaker 2: Grievance against this flu bug in particular because parents who
- 2:25:34Speaker 2: send their kids to school with it. My son went
- 2:25:36Speaker 2: to the school last week and came home with the
- 2:25:38Speaker 2: flu and has been out all week. It's slowly been
- 2:25:41Speaker 2: running through our house, affecting his sister, me, now his mom.
- 2:25:45Speaker 2: And we know he got it from school because parents,
- 2:25:46Speaker 2: instead of leaving their kids home from school, send their
- 2:25:48Speaker 2: kids to school sick. This one's a tough one for
- 2:25:51Speaker 2: me because, guys, I'm not exaggerating. I never stayed home
- 2:25:58Speaker 2: from school sick, ever. Not, I didn't, it's not that
- 2:26:01Speaker 2: I didn't ever get sick. I went to school. I probably,
- 2:26:05Speaker 2: I think in elementary school, I missed like a total
- 2:26:07Speaker 2: over the six years of elementary school. I think I
- 2:26:10Speaker 2: missed the total of like four days. I was always
- 2:26:13Speaker 2: at school. My kids, not so much when they're sick,
- 2:26:17Speaker 2: we keep them home.
- 2:26:18Speaker 1: But I.
- 2:26:20Speaker 2: Don't know. Is it, it sucks when your kid gets sick,
- 2:26:24Speaker 2: but like you, you can't bubble wrap your kid. You
- 2:26:26Speaker 2: can't not send them to school. You can't not send
- 2:26:29Speaker 2: them to the birthday party. You can't not let them
- 2:26:31Speaker 2: go to their baseball game. They're going to get sick.
- 2:26:33Speaker 2: That's just, unfortunately like kids are little germ vectors.
- 2:26:36Speaker 4: Yeah. And I.
- 2:26:39Speaker 3: Think this has become more of a thing for adults
- 2:26:41Speaker 3: at work too. Like if I, I'm hard, thankfully I'm
- 2:26:49Speaker 3: hardly ever like really, really sick, but I like, I
- 2:26:54Speaker 3: go to work sick all the time. Like, Maybe that's
- 2:26:58Speaker 3: wrong for me to admit post COVID, but like, like I'm,
- 2:27:02Speaker 3: if I've got a cold, I'm working through that.
- 2:27:04Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 2:27:05Speaker 1: I got to work.
- 2:27:06Speaker 3: If I like, there's certain things, if I got a
- 2:27:09Speaker 3: high fever or something and whatever, but like, there's so
- 2:27:13Speaker 3: many things that I'm like, I, I could have missed
- 2:27:16Speaker 3: every time I felt this like this, I could have
- 2:27:19Speaker 3: missed like hundreds of days of work of past few
- 2:27:21Speaker 3: years through this. It feels like there's, it feels like
- 2:27:24Speaker 3: I've noticed that's been more of a thing where people
- 2:27:26Speaker 3: were like, ah, sniffle. Got to stay home. I don't
- 2:27:28Speaker 3: know about that. And it applies to kids at school, too.
- 2:27:31Speaker 3: It seems like it's a lot more prevalent.
- 2:27:32Speaker 2: Jared says, grievance, listening to radio hosts shilling for billionaires
- 2:27:36Speaker 2: to take my hard earned money so they can enrich themselves.
- 2:27:39Speaker 2: And no, there's not an economic boon from these stadiums
- 2:27:41Speaker 2: and tax money is never recuperated.
- 2:27:45Speaker 1: Grievance accepted. Also grievance back on you.
- 2:27:50Speaker 2: If you think that a sports talk radio host is
- 2:27:52Speaker 2: not going to want more sports teams in the market,
- 2:27:55Speaker 2: you're outside of your mind. Sorry.
- 2:27:57Speaker 1: Listen, we get two things can be true.
- 2:27:59Speaker 2: We can not like that public money is going towards
- 2:28:02Speaker 2: the building of stadiums and we can in arenas and
- 2:28:05Speaker 2: we can also want the sports team in the new
- 2:28:07Speaker 2: arena and stadium. I think what we can say is
- 2:28:10Speaker 2: that we hope it's the Miller group that gets the
- 2:28:14Speaker 2: baseball bid because they've pledged a bunch of their own
- 2:28:17Speaker 2: private money. I believe it's the same amount of public
- 2:28:20Speaker 2: money though. It wasn't a $ 900 million bond either way.
- 2:28:24Speaker 2: I'm not sure.
- 2:28:24Speaker 3: Hockey and baseball. So yeah, but, but yeah. It's unfortunately
- 2:28:29Speaker 3: the way things are. And I say, I mean, unfortunately,
- 2:28:33Speaker 3: because it's not, I don't think it's a good thing,
- 2:28:35Speaker 3: but also.
- 2:28:37Speaker 1: We could get a major league baseball team. All right,
- 2:28:41Speaker 1: keep your grievances coming.
- 2:28:42Speaker 2: We'll air a couple more before we close it out.
- 2:28:44Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell Show wrapping up next on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:28:48Speaker 1: That's me in the corner.
- 2:28:50Speaker 6: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 2:28:53Speaker 6: the best youth football coverage. Here's O.C. from the Murdoch
- 2:28:57Speaker 6: Hyundai Studio.
- 2:28:58Speaker 1: Of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:28:59Speaker 2: I'm here and I don't know if I can do it.
- 2:29:11Speaker 2: Final segment of the show brought to you by friends
- 2:29:15Speaker 2: at Advanced Window Products.
- 2:29:18Speaker 5: 801-850-9100.
- 2:29:18Speaker 2: $ 2, 500 off 10 windows or more. And a lifetime warranty
- 2:29:22Speaker 2: on those windows. Spence, you want to air a grievance?
- 2:29:26Speaker 8: Yeah, I'd like to thank Brick for taking a break
- 2:29:28Speaker 8: from his shift selling corn dogs at Dinosaur Land or
- 2:29:32Speaker 8: farming alfalfa in Vernal. It's just good to know our
- 2:29:35Speaker 8: listeners are liars to call in and lie about me.
- 2:29:39Speaker 8: I've never called him Brandon Pagan.
- 2:29:42Speaker 1: I can confirm you say it every time. And now
- 2:29:45Speaker 1: you're lying. Here's how I know. We're going to have
- 2:29:48Speaker 1: to get the tape. Yeah, luckily there's tape, but I'll
- 2:29:51Speaker 1: tell you how I know.
- 2:29:53Speaker 8: So the cool thing about YouTube podcasts these days is
- 2:29:59Speaker 8: you can find information on pretty much everything, right? Like
- 2:30:04Speaker 8: back in the day, You didn't, I'll give you for,
- 2:30:07Speaker 8: I'll give you, for instance, I'll just tell you exactly
- 2:30:09Speaker 8: what happened. So before the Iowa state game, I'm like,
- 2:30:13Speaker 8: I need to learn a little bit more about Iowa state,
- 2:30:15Speaker 8: pull up YouTube, do like a big 12 football preview search,
- 2:30:19Speaker 8: land on some random video. And as soon as I
- 2:30:23Speaker 8: hear somebody call someone the wrong name or badly botching name,
- 2:30:28Speaker 8: I'm like, he doesn't even watch. I'll give you, for instance,
- 2:30:30Speaker 8: our guy, Josh Pate, friend of the show live in studio.
- 2:30:34Speaker 8: For some reason, Josh cannot land on Devin Dampier. It's Devon, still,
- 2:30:39Speaker 8: like last week. So I fire up this Big 12 preview,
- 2:30:44Speaker 8: and he calls Brayden Pagan, Brandon Pagan, 0 for 2.
- 2:30:50Speaker 8: And I'm like, I'm not watching this anymore. So because
- 2:30:55Speaker 8: I recognize somebody saying the wrong name, Brick, from Vernal,
- 2:31:00Speaker 8: I can tell you that I.
- 2:31:02Speaker 1: I don't know if Sly did.
- 2:31:02Speaker 8: I'm going to go back and listen to the interview tonight,
- 2:31:04Speaker 8: and we'll see if somebody said Brandon Pagan.
- 2:31:06Speaker 1: It's Braden Pagan. He's a very good player.
- 2:31:08Speaker 2: That's a very good correction by you, saying it right.
- 2:31:10Speaker 1: No, I'm just kidding. I will say that Sly says
- 2:31:13Speaker 1: it wrong.
- 2:31:14Speaker 3: As the guy who produced the Utah football broadcast, he
- 2:31:17Speaker 3: says it wrong every time on the Utah football.
- 2:31:20Speaker 2: Okay. Now, there are some people whose inability to pronounce
- 2:31:24Speaker 2: names becomes an endearing trait.
- 2:31:27Speaker 1: Oh, for sure.
- 2:31:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:31:28Speaker 1: Maybe that's what Sly's going for here.
- 2:31:30Speaker 8: Well, and I can tell you that I get names
- 2:31:32Speaker 8: wrong all the time. And there's nothing worse than trying
- 2:31:34Speaker 8: to deal with the RSL stuff. Because every time Trey
- 2:31:39Speaker 8: sends a release, I'm like, dude, how do you pronounce?
- 2:31:41Speaker 2: Like, I don't.
- 2:31:42Speaker 8: There's a center back they signed from Canada. It's like
- 2:31:44Speaker 8: Luke Day Fissure Roll or something. So working on it.
- 2:31:48Speaker 8: I do have to say, first of all, it's such
- 2:31:51Speaker 8: good radio. The airing of grievances is such excellent radio.
- 2:31:55Speaker 8: The guy, the guy who sent the grievance about his wife.
- 2:31:59Speaker 1: Like, hey, what do you want to eat? Oh, I
- 2:32:00Speaker 1: don't care. Well, I don't want to eat that. I
- 2:32:03Speaker 1: don't want to go there. That, bro, I feel you.
- 2:32:05Speaker 1: I feel you, dog. It's wild grievance.
- 2:32:12Speaker 8: And I don't want to come across as painting all
- 2:32:16Speaker 8: women like this.
- 2:32:17Speaker 2: You almost certainly will, but keep going.
- 2:32:18Speaker 8: You can't make certain decisions to put yourself in a
- 2:32:21Speaker 8: spot and then complain about the spot that your decisions
- 2:32:24Speaker 8: put you in.
- 2:32:25Speaker 1: Can I give you an example? It sounds like you're
- 2:32:27Speaker 1: going to.
- 2:32:28Speaker 2: Do you mind? Yeah, no, I like it.
- 2:32:31Speaker 8: Okay, so I was dating someone, and I made three
- 2:32:37Speaker 8: separate plans on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, because she asked me
- 2:32:40Speaker 8: to take the lead.
- 2:32:41Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:32:42Speaker 2: You're the male.
- 2:32:43Speaker 1: You should take the lead. Like, all right, well, is
- 2:32:45Speaker 1: there anything you'd like to do?
- 2:32:46Speaker 2: No, I don't care.
- 2:32:47Speaker 1: Just put it together.
- 2:32:48Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:32:49Speaker 1: Movie one night, dinner the next night. I'm making dinner
- 2:32:51Speaker 1: the next night.
- 2:32:52Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:32:52Speaker 8: She tapped out of all three things and then sent
- 2:32:56Speaker 8: a long text complaining about how she's alone all weekend.
- 2:32:59Speaker 1: Like, you chose to be alone all weekend. You can't
- 2:33:03Speaker 1: choose to be alone and then complain about being alone.
- 2:33:05Speaker 1: I think there's a book about this. It's called She's
- 2:33:07Speaker 1: Just Not That Into You. Well, I mean, there are
- 2:33:11Speaker 1: a lot of issues there.
- 2:33:14Speaker 8: So the point is, do not make decisions to put
- 2:33:18Speaker 8: yourself in a certain position and then complain about the
- 2:33:21Speaker 8: position you're in as a result of your very own
- 2:33:24Speaker 8: decision-making process.
- 2:33:25Speaker 2: I will be fair, because there's been more than one
- 2:33:28Speaker 2: instance where... I have thought I didn't care where we ate.
- 2:33:32Speaker 2: And they're like, I don't care. Where do you want
- 2:33:33Speaker 2: to go?
- 2:33:33Speaker 1: And then it's just like, I want to go to Chick-fil-A.
- 2:33:36Speaker 2: And I'm like, I don't. I don't want to go there.
- 2:33:39Speaker 2: So I've been guilty of that, too. Yeah, but you
- 2:33:42Speaker 2: just can't complain about it.
- 2:33:43Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:33:44Speaker 2: That's all.
- 2:33:45Speaker 1: Did you hear my parking story?
- 2:33:49Speaker 8: I got in the car just in time to hear
- 2:33:51Speaker 8: Brick the Liar calling in the show.
- 2:33:53Speaker 2: Love you, Brick.
- 2:33:54Speaker 1: I have to share the story again.
- 2:33:55Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:33:56Speaker 1: Hold on.
- 2:33:57Speaker 2: You know, there's that parking lot kitty corner northeast of
- 2:33:59Speaker 2: the Delta Center.
- 2:34:00Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:34:01Speaker 2: The big parking lot. You know, there's street parking all
- 2:34:03Speaker 2: around it on every curb around it.
- 2:34:05Speaker 4: Yep.
- 2:34:05Speaker 2: So the cheap man's move, and I'm the cheap man,
- 2:34:08Speaker 2: is you drive around before you go to the west
- 2:34:11Speaker 2: side entrance so you can see if you're lucky enough
- 2:34:13Speaker 2: to snag one of the street parking spots.
- 2:34:16Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:34:17Speaker 2: I was lucky enough to snag a street parking spot,
- 2:34:21Speaker 2: and some guy who was behind me had decided that
- 2:34:24Speaker 2: that was his spot.
- 2:34:25Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 2:34:25Speaker 2: And so when I pulled in and we got out
- 2:34:27Speaker 2: of the car, he's like, I was going there. I
- 2:34:29Speaker 2: was like, you were backing out of the parking lot.
- 2:34:32Speaker 2: And he hit me with like the double F bomb.
- 2:34:35Speaker 2: And I was like, okay. Just laughed.
- 2:34:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:34:39Speaker 2: And then it became an argument with my wife because
- 2:34:43Speaker 2: she's like, why'd you do that?
- 2:34:44Speaker 1: Why'd you take his spot? I'm like, it's not his spot.
- 2:34:46Speaker 1: He's behind me, behind us. She took his side.
- 2:34:49Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:34:49Speaker 2: Which is a me problem. But I was like, wait,
- 2:34:54Speaker 2: am I... Cause he was, it was like, he was
- 2:34:57Speaker 2: in front of where I was, but I, I pulled
- 2:35:00Speaker 2: past him cause he was backing out of the parking lot.
- 2:35:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:35:03Speaker 2: So like he, cause I have right away, he had
- 2:35:05Speaker 2: to wait for me to back out of the parking
- 2:35:07Speaker 2: lot and then he was behind me and then I
- 2:35:09Speaker 2: pulled into the spot and he's like, that was my spot.
- 2:35:11Speaker 8: I was like, I don't think this is, no, it's not.
- 2:35:14Speaker 8: Do you respect to Kendall? I think you're in the right.
- 2:35:16Speaker 8: I think you were, it's, it sounds like you, you,
- 2:35:18Speaker 8: you did what most everyone would have done. Okay. I,
- 2:35:22Speaker 8: let me offer this pushback. And I have changed my
- 2:35:25Speaker 8: take here, okay? When we used to drive into the
- 2:35:32Speaker 8: city to see, like, the Knicks play or the Rangers play,
- 2:35:36Speaker 8: large family, suburban usually.
- 2:35:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:35:41Speaker 8: You know, we could park at the garden, but if
- 2:35:43Speaker 8: we were going somewhere else for, like, dinner or a
- 2:35:45Speaker 8: play or something.
- 2:35:46Speaker 2: Flex, by the way. We could park at the garden.
- 2:35:48Speaker 8: Well, I mean, I'm not going to pretend we had
- 2:35:49Speaker 8: to pay at the garden where my father was running
- 2:35:51Speaker 8: the thing.
- 2:35:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:35:53Speaker 8: I want you to guess how much it costs to
- 2:35:57Speaker 8: park a Suburban in Midtown Manhattan at one of like
- 2:36:00Speaker 8: the three level parking spots for about four hours.
- 2:36:03Speaker 1: $ 100.
- 2:36:04Speaker 2: $ 320.
- 2:36:04Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:36:08Speaker 8: So when I came, when I moved out here and
- 2:36:11Speaker 8: we would go to like a game or a concert,
- 2:36:13Speaker 8: I'd be like, it's 20 bucks. Pull in right there.
- 2:36:16Speaker 8: We're parking right here. And now I'm more like you
- 2:36:19Speaker 8: where I'm like, dude, I'm not paying for parking. I'm
- 2:36:22Speaker 8: going to, By the way, I do have a secret
- 2:36:25Speaker 8: spot downtown. I have to be careful who I share
- 2:36:27Speaker 8: this with. It claims that you're not allowed to park there.
- 2:36:30Speaker 1: You can park there for two years. They won't do
- 2:36:35Speaker 1: anything to your car. I'll share it with you during
- 2:36:37Speaker 1: the break.
- 2:36:37Speaker 2: I like that.
- 2:36:39Speaker 1: I knew you would. That's what I'm looking for.
- 2:36:43Speaker 2: Free parking.
- 2:36:44Speaker 1: I want to be clear, Brick.
- 2:36:45Speaker 8: I'm completely playing with you.
- 2:36:47Speaker 1: No part of me is upset. Thanks for the call.
- 2:36:50Speaker 1: And by the way, Vernal, underrated spot.
- 2:36:53Speaker 2: Vernal's great. Lovely people.
- 2:36:55Speaker 1: Beautiful people. Lovely people. Shout out, Vernal. There's a camera
- 2:37:00Speaker 1: on you right now. What? It's the Sean O'Connell show
- 2:37:03Speaker 1: wrapping up. Everybody have a great weekend. Stay tuned for
- 2:37:05Speaker 1: the drive.
- 2:37:06Speaker 2: ESPN 700, 92 on FM.
