- 1:09Jonathan: Hello, Dork Squad.
- 1:10Jonathan: I'm Jonathan Cormur, and you're listening to Dork Tales Storytime, the podcast for kids and their pop culture-loving grown-ups.
- 1:17Jonathan: A special thank you to Emmanuel who suggested a Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster-inspired story.
- 1:23Theme Song: It's a beautiful day for a story, adventure, and glory, new friends and old ones too.
- 1:30Theme Song: It's an excellent day to get swept away in a tale, so let us regale you
- 1:47Redge: oh dear.
- 1:49Redge: That's not right.
- 1:50Redge: Oh, oh my, it's upside down.
- 1:52Redge: Just a d shucks.
- 1:55Redge: Jonathan, I'm all turned around.
- 1:59Jonathan: Let's check over there where the fog is cleared.
- 2:02Redge: I've been studying the maps for weeks, but it's always so impossible to locate Legend Lake.
- 2:08Jonathan: How about in this clearing?
- 2:10Jonathan: See anything familiar now?
- 2:12Redge: No no no
- 2:18Samuel: Redge?
- 2:18Samuel: Jonathan?
- 2:20Jonathan: Is that Samuel Squatch?
- 2:22Redge: Yes, our Bigfoot friend! Hi Sam.
- 2:26Jonathan: Boy are we glad we found you.
- 2:28Redge: I can never make my way to Legend Lake without a legend like yourself to guide me to where I need to be.
- 2:35Redge: What was that?
- 2:42Samuel: Come see over here.
- 2:45Redge: Bah My word!
- 2:51Jonathan: Look at its wingspan.
- 2:53Redge: It's the size of a small vehicle.
- 2:56Samuel: It's a mythical Scottish bird.
- 2:59Samuel: A boobrie.
- 3:00Samuel: I've never seen one up close.
- 3:04Jonathan: Bah It certainly doesn't sound like a bird.
- 3:08Redge: Definitely not.
- 3:09Redge: It's got more of a barnyard sound.
- 3:13Jonathan: Off it goes.
- 3:21Redge: Magnificent.
- 3:24Jonathan: Sam, why does it sound like a sheep?
- 3:26Redge: Yes, please tell us a bird song expert.
- 3:30Samuel: Well boobries have a special power.
- 3:33Samuel: They're able to mimic other animal sounds to lure them closer to the water's edge.
- 3:39Redge: Ooh, fascinating.
- 3:41Jonathan: Are there more boobries in Legend Lake?
- 3:43Samuel: Not that I know of, and its presence can only mean one thing.
- 3:48Redge: Oh what?
- 3:50Samuel: She's back.
- 3:52Jonathan: Who's back?
- 3:54Samuel: The Loch Ness Monster.
- 4:03Jonathan: What's going on over there?
- 4:05Samuel: Oh dear.
- 4:07Redge: There seems to be a large crowd gathering near the edge of the lake.
- 4:11Samuel: Oh, this can't be good.
- 4:13Jonathan: What are they all doing here?
- 4:16Samuel: Word must have gotten out to the rest of Once Upon a Time.
- 4:20Samuel: It seems Barbara Shriek has led everyone through the fog to Legend Lake to try to get a glimpse of her.
- 4:28Redge: Of the Loch Ness Monster?
- 4:30Samuel: Yes.
- 4:32Barbra Shriek: Squeeze in, friends.
- 4:34Barbra Shriek: Fill the empty spaces.
- 4:37Barbra Shriek: Good.
- 4:38Barbra Shriek: Welcome, creatures and folksters of Once Upon a Time.
- 4:43Barbra Shriek: Many of you have travelled from all over Once Upon a Time to catch a glimpse of the elusive Loch Ness monster.
- 4:51Barbra Shriek: I'm Barbara Shriek, your Banshee e mcee, here to unravel the mystery and answer all of your Loch Ness questions.
- 5:03Ruffus: I have a question.
- 5:05Barbra Shriek: Hello, good sir.
- 5:07Barbra Shriek: Where have you hailed from?
- 5:10Ruffus: I'm Ruffus, travelling from Howl of the Moon Records in Litropia.
- 5:15Barbra Shriek: Welcome, Rufus.
- 5:17Barbra Shriek: What can I do you for?
- 5:20Ruffus: How many sightings have there been of the Loch Ness Monster?
- 5:24Barbra Shriek: Legends say that there have been thousands of sightings in a place on Earth called Scotland.
- 5:31Barbra Shriek: But no one has ever seen her here in Legend Lake.
- 5:35Barbra Shriek: It was only recently discovered that the monster spends her summers with us in Once Upon a Time.
- 5:43Barbra Shriek: Any other questions?
- 5:45Barbra Shriek: Yes, you there.
- 5:46Barbra Shriek: What's your name?
- 5:48Zinnia Fig: I'm Zinnia Fig, the hedge witch of the Folktale Forest.
- 5:53Barbra Shriek: Tell me what's on your mind, Miss Fig.
- 5:57Zinnia Fig: Can I get a picture with the monster?
- 6:00Crowd: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 6:03Crowd: I want a picture.
- 6:06Crowd: I want a picture.
- 6:07Crowd: I want a picture.
- 6:08Crowd: I want a picture.
- 6:11Barbra Shriek: True enthusiasts.
- 6:14Barbra Shriek: I love it.
- 6:15Barbra Shriek: We'll do our best to capture a photo.
- 6:18Barbra Shriek: Right this way, everyone.
- 6:20Barbra Shriek: Stay close.
- 6:22Barbra Shriek: We'll continue our search around the lake.
- 6:25Barbra Shriek: Follow me! Now, it may be helpful to know the loch monster goes by a nickname.
- 6:31Barbra Shriek: Nessie.
- 6:33Barbra Shriek: The depths of her lock in Scotland are as legendary as Legend Lake itself.
- 6:40Samuel: Oh that's not good.
- 6:41Samuel: Not good at all.
- 6:43Redge: What's wrong, Samuel?
- 6:45Samuel: Remember when you first met me?
- 6:48Jonathan: You wanted to be a part of the birdsong competition, but you couldn't get in because no one seemed to notice you.
- 6:54Redge: You could hardly get a word in among the competitors and administrators of the competition.
- 6:59Samuel: As Bigfoot, I always seem to go unnoticed.
- 7:03Samuel: But I just wanted to be seen.
- 7:05Redge: I'm so glad you were.
- 7:07Redge: You were riveting.
- 7:09Jonathan: Yes, your bird song is always spot on.
- 7:13Samuel: Thank you.
- 7:13Samuel: Actually, I've been working on my raven.
- 7:17Redge: Ooh, let's hear it.
- 7:19Jonathan: Wait, I want to hear it too, but what does all this have to do with the Loch Ness Monster?
- 7:25Samuel: Oh, right, right.
- 7:26Samuel: The Loch Ness Monster has the opposite problem.
- 7:29Samuel: Everyone's always looking for her.
- 7:32Samuel: But she'd rather be left alone.
- 7:41Jonathan: Do you hear that?
- 7:42Jonathan: It sounds like someone's crying.
- 7:46Samuel: Oh dear.
- 7:47Samuel: This is just what I feared.
- 7:49Samuel: Follow me.
- 7:55Samuel: Nessie! Nessie! Is that you?
- 8:08Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Huh?
- 8:09Samuel: It's your big footed friend, Samuel Squatch!
- 8:13Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Oh uh Hi, Sam.
- 8:16Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I was just.
- 8:17Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I couldn't quite
- 8:19Samuel: I'm here with my friends, Redge and Jonathan.
- 8:23Redge: Hi there.
- 8:24Jonathan: Really nice to meet you.
- 8:26Samuel: They're visiting me from the Folktale Forest.
- 8:28Samuel: Are you okay, Nessie?
- 8:31Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: No, not really.
- 8:34Samuel: What's wrong?
- 8:35Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Every summer, I come to Legend Lake to escape the crowds.
- 8:40Jonathan: Does it get crowded in Scotland?
- 8:42Samuel: Back at her home in Loch Ness tons of people flock to her waters to try to get a photo of her.
- 8:49Redge: They all want proof that there really is a monster in the deep waters of the loch?
- 8:55Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Exactly.
- 8:56Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: But during summers here at Legend Lake, I've been able to find some solitude.
- 9:01Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I guess I won't be able to do that this year, though.
- 9:05Samuel: I'm sorry, Nessie.
- 9:07Samuel: Word must have gotten out in Once Upon A Time that you like to spend your summers at Legend Lake.
- 9:12Redge: You are quite famous, you know.
- 9:15Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: But I never wanted to be famous.
- 9:17Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I just wanted to study my rocks in peace.
- 9:20Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Crowds make me so very nervous.
- 9:23Jonathan: Your rocks?
- 9:25Samuel: Nessie is an expert in the field of geology.
- 9:28Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: During the winters at Loch Ness, I like to collect sediment, dirt, rocks, stones, and sometimes even fossils.
- 9:37Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I find samples deep down in the hidden caves of my Loch's waters.
- 9:42Jonathan: Aren't there any crowds in the winter?
- 9:44Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Not as many.
- 9:45Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: It's too cold for anyone to want to visit then.
- 9:49Redge: Giving you time to explore without interruption.
- 9:52Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Right.
- 9:53Samuel: Then she comes here every summer and studies each rock sample she's found.
- 9:58Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Last year I found a stone sample that dates back to the ice age, when my loch was just a glacier.
- 10:06Jonathan: How neat.
- 10:07Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I guess I'll have to find a new place to spend my summers.
- 10:11Redge: No, I won't allow it.
- 10:14Samuel: Redge?
- 10:15Redge: We have to devise a plan.
- 10:17Redge: What we need is a diversion.
- 10:19Jonathan: Diversion?
- 10:21Samuel: Something to distract the crowds away from you.
- 10:24Redge: Or better yet, make them think they have seen you.
- 10:29Jonathan: Great idea, Redge.
- 10:30Jonathan: If they believe they've seen the Loch Ness monster, maybe they'll go away.
- 10:35Samuel: I have just a thing.
- 10:43Redge: Wow, Samuel.
- 10:45Redge: Is that a swan call you're doing?
- 10:48Samuel: Yes.
- 10:57Jonathan: Why are you calling the swans?
- 11:00Samuel: At dusk, I'll have the swans far out on the lake.
- 11:04Samuel: The low light of the sun will make it look like Nessie's long neck, and if the other swans follow behind the first, they will look like the humps of her back.
- 11:14Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: This could work.
- 11:15Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Samuel, Redge, Jonathan, thank you.
- 11:19Redge: Let's find the crowd and get the swans in order before the sun sinks down below the water's edge.
- 11:25Jonathan: I think the crowd went this way.
- 11:31Barbra Shriek: And in the 1930s, there was a famous photograph that was taken by a doctor visiting Scotland with his family.
- 11:39Barbra Shriek: The photo showed the monster had a long neck and her back curved out of the water.
- 11:44Barbra Shriek: The photo is famously referred to as the surgeon's photo.
- 11:49Ruffus: Wait
- 11:51Zinnia Fig: Look
- 11:52Ruffus: out on the water.
- 11:54Zinnia Fig: Oh my could it be?
- 11:58Barbra Shriek: A long neck humps jetting out of the water behind her.
- 12:02Barbra Shriek: It must be! Look everyone.
- 12:05Barbra Shriek: It's her it's her The Lock Ness Monster! And just as the sun sets behind the lake, she's gone.
- 12:33Barbra Shriek: Oh wow, folks! What a treat! What a treasure! Only here at Legend Lake
- 12:45Redge: Jonathan, the swan diversion worked.
- 12:48Samuel: Good work, swans.
- 12:56Ruffus: Thank you, Barbara Shriek, for the tour.
- 12:59Ruffus: I can't wait to bring all my music lovers from the Litropia back here to see Nessie too.
- 13:05Barbra Shriek: Daily tours leave from the North Shore at 8 AM
- 13:09Zinnia Fig: I'm coming back tomorrow and bringing my whole gardening club.
- 13:14Crowd: Oh yeah, me too, me too, me too, me too.
- 13:18Redge: Oh no.
- 13:19Jonathan: Did you hear that?
- 13:21Samuel: They'll be back.
- 13:23Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: And they're bringing their friends.
- 13:26Redge: I'm so sorry, Nessie.
- 13:28Jonathan: This was the opposite of what we wanted.
- 13:30Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: It's okay.
- 13:32Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Thank you for trying.
- 13:33Barbra Shriek: I guess I'll just have to find another place to spend my summers and find some peace.
- 13:39Samuel: No!
- 13:40Jonathan: Samuel?
- 13:41Samuel: Once upon a time is a land filled with mythical and magical creatures.
- 13:46Redge: But it seems Nessie is a legend among legends.
- 13:50Samuel: Still, this should be a place for you to go and feel at home.
- 13:54Samuel: To feel at peace.
- 13:56Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Thanks, Samuel.
- 13:58Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: But I'll be okay.
- 14:00Jonathan: I'm with Samuel.
- 14:01Jonathan: Everyone should have a place they can go to feel most like themselves.
- 14:05Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: What are we going to do?
- 14:07Redge: Nessie, do you have the rocks and samples you collected from this year?
- 14:12Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Yes.
- 14:13Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Why?
- 14:14Redge: What if you showed Once Upon A Time who you truly are?
- 14:19Jonathan: Maybe then they'd understand that Legend Lake is your safe haven.
- 14:23Samuel: This could work.
- 14:26Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: But I'll have to speak?
- 14:29Redge: Yes.
- 14:30Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: To a whole crowd?
- 14:33Jonathan: Right.
- 14:34Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I can't do it.
- 14:35Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: It makes me much too nervous.
- 14:38Samuel: We'll be with you the whole time.
- 14:41Redge: It seemed like the crowds will be back soon.
- 14:43Jonathan: And you can either hide from them
- 14:45Samuel: or tell them who you are and what you need.
- 14:49Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: But what should I say?
- 14:50Redge: We'll figure it out together.
- 14:53Jonathan: You got this, Nessie.
- 14:58Crowd: I just saw her yesterday.
- 15:00Crowd: I can't win.
- 15:12Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Oh, geez, a new crowd is already here.
- 15:16Samuel: Just remember what we practiced last night, Nessie.
- 15:20Redge: We are right by your side.
- 15:22Jonathan: We believe in you.
- 15:24Barbra Shriek: Right this way, my friends, right this way.
- 15:28Barbra Shriek: Fill in the gaps.
- 15:29Barbra Shriek: Welcome to Legend Lake, known for its many mystical creatures.
- 15:35Barbra Shriek: We have a special treat to share with you today.
- 15:38Barbra Shriek: For all you folk who have decided to visit us again, welcome back.
- 15:43Barbra Shriek: They can attest to the wonders we witnessed right here just last night.
- 15:49Ruffus: It's real.
- 15:51Zinnia Fig: We saw her.
- 15:52Ruffus: We've got photos.
- 15:55Barbra Shriek: That's right, the Loch Ness Monster in our very own Legend Lake, traveling from her loch in Scotland.
- 16:02Barbra Shriek: Nessie has graced us with her presence.
- 16:05Barbra Shriek: Now, before we begin our tour
- 16:09Zinnia Fig: Look
- 16:10Barbra Shriek: Huh?
- 16:11Barbra Shriek: What's this?
- 16:13Zinnia Fig: The rocks on the shore.
- 16:16Ruffus: They've been shaped into a design.
- 16:19Zinnia Fig: The design is in the shape of the monster.
- 16:24Barbra Shriek: Can you believe a secret design left right here in our shores by our very own Loch Ness
- 16:44Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Oh, uh Hello
- 16:48Zinnia Fig: Quick! Somebody snapped my photo with the monster.
- 16:52Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Please don't do that.
- 16:53Ruffus: I want a picture too.
- 16:56Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Oh gosh.
- 17:01Crowd: Say cheese.
- 17:02Crowd: Get one on my good side.
- 17:05Samuel: Hey everyone! Listen up!
- 17:08Redge: Our friend Nessie has something to say.
- 17:11Jonathan: Let's all give her the respect and attention she deserves.
- 17:18Crowd: What's going on?
- 17:19Crowd: Who are you?
- 17:20Crowd: What's up?
- 17:20Crowd: What is happening here?
- 17:22Crowd: I don't know what is happening.
- 17:25Ruffus: Bigfoot?
- 17:26Zinnia Fig: Redge?
- 17:28Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Thanks, Sam.
- 17:29Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Thanks, Redge.
- 17:30Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Thank you, Jonathan.
- 17:32Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Hi everyone.
- 17:33Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I'm Nessie.
- 17:35Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I'm not always here in Once Upon A Time, and I know it might seem exciting when I come to visit, but in Scotland, I get swarmed by crowds and tourists during the summertime.
- 17:47Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I come here to Legend Lake to find peace and quiet, and to study my rock samples.
- 17:52Samuel: She's an expert in geology.
- 17:55Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Thank you, Samuel.
- 17:56Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I know many of you are mythical and magical in your own ways, and I would greatly appreciate it if you didn't treat me any differently than you would your own neighbor.
- 18:07Barbra Shriek: Wow we My sincerest apologies, Nessie.
- 18:12Barbra Shriek: I never thought of bringing all these people here to see ya.
- 18:15Barbra Shriek: would upset ya
- 18:18Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: It's okay, Barbara.
- 18:19Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: It's just that crowds tend to make me very nervous.
- 18:22Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: And then I can't focus on my work.
- 18:26Ruffus: I'm so sorry, Miss Nessie.
- 18:28Ruffus: How about a BOGO coupon for my record shop?
- 18:32Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: Wow, thank you.
- 18:35Redge: Oh, what an amazing offer! Do you have the Branch Sisters new album?
- 18:40Ruffus: You bet.
- 18:41Redge: Whoa, Nessie, you have no idea what a deal that is.
- 18:46Redge: I mean, you could get the new Branch Sisters.
- 18:51Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I can't wait to hear it.
- 18:53Jonathan: We all hope you can understand what Nessie is saying.
- 18:56Samuel: And leave her in peace.
- 19:05Samuel: I'll be the most peaceful ever.
- 19:07Samuel: Me too, yeah.
- 19:09Samuel: I'm I'm all liberal, though, sure.
- 19:12Samuel: Yeah, makes sense.
- 19:12Samuel: That totally makes sense, yeah.
- 19:15Barbra Shriek: Sorry for all the trouble, Nessie.
- 19:17Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster: I hope I didn't ruin your tour.
- 19:20Barbra Shriek: Not at all.
- 19:21Barbra Shriek: It is great to really meet you.
- 19:25Barbra Shriek: Bah what is that?
- 19:28Samuel: A Boobrie! A mythical bird that has followed Nessie to Legend Lake this summer from Loch Ness.
- 19:38Barbra Shriek: People will be so thrilled to see a Boobrie here in Legend Lake.
- 19:43Jonathan: Maybe Samuel can help you put together a bird watching tour.
- 19:47Redge: Great idea, Jonathan!
- 19:49Barbra Shriek: Sounds flappastic! What do you say, Bigfoot?
- 19:54Samuel: I'm in.
- 19:55Samuel: There's so many birds we could cover.
- 19:58Samuel: There's the macaw, the Chickawah, the Kookeriku, the Boobin Boom, the Chumacabra.
- 20:06Jonathan: Nessie?
- 20:07Jonathan: Huh?
- 20:07Jonathan: Nessie?
- 20:08Jonathan: Where'd she go?
- 20:10Redge: To spend time alone to study her rocks.
