Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello, welcome to another episode of Inside the Tape on
- 0:12Speaker 1: Inside the Birds. I'm Jeff Mosher with Adam Kaplan, and
- 0:15Speaker 1: we've got Greg Cosell back with us to break down
- 0:18Speaker 1: the tape of an Eagles 25-14 loss to the Carolina
- 0:22Speaker 1: Panthers in Week 6 at The Link. In the last episode,
- 0:25Speaker 1: we did the offense. Now we are going to break
- 0:27Speaker 1: down a defense, Greg, that has this recurring nightmare of
- 0:30Speaker 1: playing pretty well for three quarters. And then just, you know,
- 0:35Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter, there's either a breakdown, a miscommunication,
- 0:38Speaker 1: or they just run out of gas. And I imagine
- 0:41Speaker 1: you saw some good things on tape, but then the
- 0:43Speaker 1: same result, you're on the field as much as you
- 0:45Speaker 1: are when you're the Eagles defense. It's not perfect.
- 0:48Speaker 2: And there still were a couple of, you know, breakdowns
- 0:50Speaker 2: in the secondary, which we haven't really seen, you know,
- 0:53Speaker 2: since Vic's been here. Um, and again, I don't know
- 0:56Speaker 2: how they coach it, but I know that there's a breakdown. Um,
- 0:59Speaker 2: it happened on the, on both tremble touchdowns. Um, and
- 1:03Speaker 2: you know, what was interesting to me is how they
- 1:05Speaker 2: deployed people because Grenard, after playing on the right side
- 1:08Speaker 2: in those two games, he only played on the left
- 1:10Speaker 2: side in this game only. And so Nolan Smith therefore
- 1:14Speaker 2: played on both sides because he would move to the right. Right.
- 1:17Speaker 2: He only played on the right side. Um, so, and
- 1:20Speaker 2: then they played, uh, James newbie, like, close to 50
- 1:24Speaker 2: snaps and he was a seventh round pick and you know,
- 1:28Speaker 2: they just needed, they needed another body.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Did you see anything out of him? I mean, he
- 1:34Speaker 1: was an explosive athlete in college. I mean, a.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Couple of, a couple of rushes I thought were pretty good,
- 1:39Speaker 2: but for the most part, you know, it's just one
- 1:42Speaker 2: of those guys that was out there a couple of rushes.
- 1:44Speaker 2: I went, Oh, that's pretty good. But nothing where you went, wow,
- 1:47Speaker 2: like let's keep putting them out there and he's going
- 1:49Speaker 2: to be the guy that does it.
- 1:51Speaker 3: He's really small. That's his problem. Despite his workout numbers.
- 1:55Speaker 3: And he won the seventh round because he's, he's just, yeah,
- 1:57Speaker 3: just he's, he's like the sixth guy. I mean, that's there. Oh,
- 2:03Speaker 3: before we get started, Greg, did you see your hot
- 2:04Speaker 3: camel do any edge stuff? Any real edge rush?
- 2:07Speaker 2: Oh, not real edge rushing. No, no. Okay. You know,
- 2:10Speaker 2: when he was a stack backer a couple of times,
- 2:11Speaker 2: you know, he lined up on the ball on the edge,
- 2:13Speaker 2: like they've done, you know, over the, you know, since
- 2:15Speaker 2: he's been here, but not, not where you went. Oh,
- 2:17Speaker 2: he's an edge rusher. No, they didn't do that.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Okay. Adam, we started two minutes ago when I said,
- 2:21Speaker 1: welcome to Inside the Tape. Every question is free reign
- 2:24Speaker 1: right now.
- 2:24Speaker 3: We're good.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I'm just messing with you. You said before we get started.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Very good.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Very good.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So in the spirit of less game and more future,
- 2:35Speaker 1: Jeremiah Trotter got in there. Vic said he was going
- 2:38Speaker 1: to start rotating by this series. Anything you noticed different, better,
- 2:43Speaker 1: worse when Jihad's in there versus Jeremiah?
- 2:47Speaker 2: Yeah. Not necessarily in this game. I mean, you know, look,
- 2:52Speaker 2: they ran the ball, you know, pretty well, the Panthers.
- 2:56Speaker 1: In the fourth quarter. I think they were only averaging 2.9
- 2:59Speaker 1: per carry going into the fourth, but yeah.
- 3:02Speaker 2: But no, not really. You know, the thing is when
- 3:07Speaker 2: you watch them and in this game, you know, Grenard
- 3:09Speaker 2: was not a factor rushing the quarterback in this game.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Don't forget, Young gets rid of the ball for the
- 3:13Speaker 2: most part pretty quick. And I thought they did some things.
- 3:16Speaker 2: offensively with the use of motion and movement to create
- 3:19Speaker 2: clearly defined reads and throws, which, you know, then the
- 3:22Speaker 2: quarterback gets rid of the ball. But, you know, they
- 3:26Speaker 2: just don't really have a pass rush. And if Carter's
- 3:30Speaker 2: not providing any, and he didn't in this game, then
- 3:32Speaker 2: they do not really have a pass rush. So it's
- 3:36Speaker 2: a tough deal. I mean, you know, when you don't
- 3:39Speaker 2: have a pass rush, you know, and then Vic, of course,
- 3:42Speaker 2: you know, he starts to increase his His pressure, he
- 3:45Speaker 2: was very aggressive with pressure in this game. 38% of
- 3:48Speaker 2: the time he rushed five. So that's a very high
- 3:51Speaker 2: number for him.
- 3:52Speaker 3: That is extremely high for him.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Wow.
- 3:55Speaker 1: That's an out-of-body experience.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Because they're not getting– you know, the thing is he
- 3:59Speaker 2: knows they're not getting pressure with four. He knows it.
- 4:02Speaker 2: And the bottom line is, and he's been doing this
- 4:04Speaker 2: a long time, if you can't get pressure with four,
- 4:06Speaker 2: then you've got to bring a fifth because you've got
- 4:07Speaker 2: to impact the quarterback. If you're not impacting the quarterback,
- 4:11Speaker 2: you know, playing pass defense is really hard.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I thought, Greg, and I was trying to dig for
- 4:18Speaker 1: some footage, but I couldn't find one thing that really
- 4:21Speaker 1: jumped out. But I thought for the most part from
- 4:23Speaker 1: the second quarter and early in the third, you saw
- 4:27Speaker 1: Carolina struggle against the pressure, but no sacks. It was
- 4:30Speaker 1: just that you saw a lot of hurried throws from
- 4:32Speaker 1: Bryce Young against those.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, but you also saw a lot of clean throws,
- 4:36Speaker 2: and he made some really good throws. Yep.
- 4:38Speaker 1: And I was going to say, then I saw that
- 4:39Speaker 1: I felt that they adjusted. We'll look at some of
- 4:41Speaker 1: those throws in the third and fourth, the Coker, but
- 4:43Speaker 1: it seemed like they started to find the answers there.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Well, they, I'm sure you're going to show the play,
- 4:48Speaker 2: but that Coker 32 yarder on a third and 10
- 4:52Speaker 2: from the minus 10 yard line with four minutes remaining
- 4:54Speaker 2: in the third quarter was a critical play. And I
- 4:56Speaker 2: won't say how it happened. Cause I imagine you're going
- 4:59Speaker 2: to show it and then we'll get into it in
- 5:00Speaker 2: some detail. Yes.
- 5:02Speaker 1: The amazing thing, Adam is, We spent so much time
- 5:05Speaker 1: in the preseason, weeks leading up, talking about how much
- 5:08Speaker 1: the Eagles might be in base defense this year because
- 5:12Speaker 1: of teams like Washington, the Rams, who else, the Bears,
- 5:17Speaker 1: that they were going to play the first five weeks.
- 5:19Speaker 1: They did not see a ton of 13 personnel until,
- 5:22Speaker 1: you name it, the Carolina Panthers, Greg. That had to
- 5:25Speaker 1: be more 13 personnel that they were to customarily play, right?
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yes, they played much more so in this game. That
- 5:32Speaker 2: is true.
- 5:33Speaker 3: And Darren Waller, who's going to set an NFL record
- 5:38Speaker 3: for coming out of retirement. Yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 2: He was there.
- 5:41Speaker 3: He played.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Right. So did you see, did we see, we saw
- 5:45Speaker 1: more Dajin at safety, right? Greg and more.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Yeah. He played a ton of safety in this game.
- 5:50Speaker 2: You know, he's, he's struggled a bit this year, particularly
- 5:53Speaker 2: when he's had a matchup in man coverage. And I
- 5:56Speaker 2: think that's one reason why people see him as a
- 5:58Speaker 2: safety and not really as a corner, but you know, he's, he's,
- 6:03Speaker 2: I think he'd be the first to admit that he's
- 6:04Speaker 2: not had his best season in his three years in
- 6:07Speaker 2: the league so far, you know, in terms of how
- 6:10Speaker 2: he's played. And I think that's, you know, it's hurt
- 6:13Speaker 2: their defense because he's been a real, in some ways,
- 6:16Speaker 2: a dominant player in his first two years. Right, right.
- 6:20Speaker 1: All right, let's look at some footage, Greg. Nobody loves
- 6:22Speaker 1: grilling more than me. It could be 30 degrees and
- 6:25Speaker 1: I'll be out there grilling burgers and steaks. But the
- 6:28Speaker 1: one thing that I really can't stand is losing my
- 6:31Speaker 1: fish and my veggies because they just can't grill without
- 6:34Speaker 1: falling through. That's why I've been using Hexclad's BBQ Collection.
- 6:39Speaker 1: It's bringing hybrid technology outdoors with products specifically designed to
- 6:44Speaker 1: make grilling easier, especially when you're cooking foods that normally

- 7:03Speaker 1: That gives you even more control when you're cooking delicate
- 7:06Speaker 1: foods like veggies or seafood, or if you're cooking multiple
- 7:09Speaker 1: portions at one time.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Last week, I grilled.
- 7:12Speaker 1: The best surf and turf my style, which is salmon
- 7:15Speaker 1: and ribs, and lost none of it because I used...

- 9:29Speaker 1: Prize picks run your game. We talk about the opening
- 9:33Speaker 1: drive and how important those are in games, right?
- 9:35Speaker 2: And, I mean, the.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Eagles' first play on offense was a sack, okay? So
- 9:40Speaker 1: the Panthers, though, they came out. And what struck you
- 9:44Speaker 1: about their opening drive and how they were able to
- 9:46Speaker 1: get the ball to their best players?
- 9:48Speaker 2: Well, I thought on the first two possessions, they did
- 9:50Speaker 2: a great job of getting McMillan matched on McCoover through
- 9:53Speaker 2: the deployment of motion outside of McMillan. Because when they
- 9:57Speaker 2: did that, because the Eagles are, a foundational zone team,
- 10:01Speaker 2: when they did that, all that happens is the corner
- 10:03Speaker 2: kind of bumps out because it's zone. And then you
- 10:06Speaker 2: have McMillan working inside against McCuba. And they did that twice.
- 10:12Speaker 2: It was on the first possession, 15 yards on a
- 10:14Speaker 2: curl route.
- 10:15Speaker 1: That's this right here.
- 10:17Speaker 2: 21 yards on an outcut. So, I mean, you can see.
- 10:20Speaker 2: You see the motion, and I think that's Waller in motion.
- 10:24Speaker 2: So what happens is, is he ends up running the
- 10:26Speaker 2: route outside of McMillan, and therefore the right corner, Mitchell,
- 10:30Speaker 2: who plays exclusively right corner, he just matches him. And
- 10:34Speaker 2: now Makuba's got to match McMillan.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:39Speaker 2: And he basically, you know, he runs a great route. Yep.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Because he stems inside, then he starts to lean outside,
- 10:46Speaker 2: and then he stops. Right. And, you know, McCube is
- 10:49Speaker 2: not used to playing man-to-man on wide receivers, which essentially
- 10:52Speaker 2: he was doing right there. Even though the call was
- 10:54Speaker 2: not man coverage, he had to match a man-to-man. Right.
- 10:57Speaker 1: And not just, not only that, a top 10 wide receiver.
- 11:00Speaker 1: You liked McMillan a lot, if I recall, coming out
- 11:02Speaker 1: of college.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Again, I'm not going to, you know, when I do
- 11:06Speaker 2: the college stuff, a lot of times my comparisons are
- 11:08Speaker 2: not apples to apples, but I thought that just stylistically,
- 11:13Speaker 2: he was much closer to a Justin Jefferson, for instance,
- 11:16Speaker 2: than a Drake London. You know, I thought he was
- 11:18Speaker 2: a little juicier, and I think that he's shown that
- 11:21Speaker 2: in the league. I mean, he's a really good receiver. So, again,
- 11:25Speaker 2: is this the second play, the 21-yarder?
- 11:27Speaker 1: It sure is.
- 11:28Speaker 2: So, again, you see the motion by Mechie outside of–
- 11:31Speaker 2: I think it's Mechie. Is Mechie 13?
- 11:32Speaker 3: 13, yeah. Former Eagle.
- 11:34Speaker 2: And it's outside of him, so now it's Wolin who
- 11:36Speaker 2: has to match him, and now you get the same thing.
- 11:42Speaker 2: You get Macuba who has to match up to McMillan.
- 11:46Speaker 2: And it's an outcut and it's beautiful. I mean, this is,
- 11:49Speaker 2: this was game plan because it's the first two possessions. Sure.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I think I also really like how Bryce threw this
- 11:56Speaker 1: with the timing and anticipation we talk about. He's throwing
- 11:59Speaker 1: it to the sideline. Whereas the stem may not look
- 12:02Speaker 1: like that right here.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Look, this is practiced. This is one of those things
- 12:07Speaker 2: that theoretically as Brian Jaworski used to say, he could
- 12:11Speaker 2: probably throw a blindfold.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Well, absolutely.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Um, Coker on run action here on 19 yards. How
- 12:19Speaker 1: does this play develop?
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yeah, let me Coker. Oh, this is the quick game
- 12:26Speaker 2: off run action. So again, you know, you start getting
- 12:28Speaker 2: caught up in what's an RPO, what's not, you know,
- 12:32Speaker 2: different teams categorize these things differently. But this is, this
- 12:36Speaker 2: is what one of the things they've done exceptionally well
- 12:39Speaker 2: with young this year to play to the fact that
- 12:42Speaker 2: If he's going to throw the ball in the middle
- 12:44Speaker 2: of the field, he's got to do it quick. He
- 12:45Speaker 2: can't let the bodies get to him. So what they
- 12:47Speaker 2: do is they go quick run action. It's all quick game.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And then they throw the glance route to Coker. It's beautiful.
- 12:55Speaker 2: But the run action works because you've got the pulling guard. Yep.
- 12:59Speaker 2: And boom. You see the ball's out and there's run
- 13:01Speaker 2: after catch. It's beautiful.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Now, this works a lot because the defense believes in
- 13:07Speaker 1: the threat of the run and the Panthers can run
- 13:09Speaker 1: the ball well.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Well, it's not just that. Okay. You know, I've had
- 13:11Speaker 2: this conversation over the years, and Adam knows this because
- 13:14Speaker 2: he sat in the room. It's been studied, just so
- 13:19Speaker 2: people understand that. There is zero correlation between the run
- 13:22Speaker 2: game and play action. Zero. What defenses are reacting to
- 13:26Speaker 2: is what they see and how they're coached and the
- 13:29Speaker 2: keys and the indicators. And when you see a guard pull,
- 13:32Speaker 2: that's a sure, in your mind, that looks like run
- 13:35Speaker 2: all the way. That's a key for the run game. Right.
- 13:38Speaker 1: So, you know, they're playing their run rules because they
- 13:41Speaker 1: have to, because they.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Correct.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Correct.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 13:44Speaker 4: There's no linebacker in the huddle in the second quarter
- 13:49Speaker 4: is saying, you know, guys, they've only run the ball
- 13:52Speaker 4: eight times for nine yards, so we don't have to
- 13:54Speaker 4: play the run.
- 13:55Speaker 2: That doesn't happen. They're reacting to the keys and the
- 13:58Speaker 2: indicators that they're taught. So it's been proven so much
- 14:03Speaker 2: over time that there's no correlation between between running the
- 14:06Speaker 2: ball and play action. Sure.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I was comparing sort of what we talked about in
- 14:09Speaker 1: yesterday's show where the Eagles ran a play action that
- 14:14Speaker 1: the linebacker didn't really believe. The keys and tells were
- 14:18Speaker 1: different because the Eagles are struggling there especially, so the
- 14:21Speaker 1: linebacker corrected it.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Right, and like I said, I remember when we did
- 14:25Speaker 2: that with Okereke, and he obviously, based on film study,
- 14:29Speaker 2: something clicked in his mind, what he saw that told
- 14:32Speaker 2: him it's not a run. I guarantee it was a
- 14:34Speaker 2: movement by one of the offensive linemen, you know, because
- 14:37Speaker 2: Matt Millen always used to talk about the fact that
- 14:39Speaker 2: Matt offensive linemen can't cheat because they're too big. Their
- 14:43Speaker 2: bodies don't allow them to cheat. So don't don't look
- 14:46Speaker 2: in the backfield at the running back or the quarterback.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Look at the offensive lineman. And he always used to
- 14:50Speaker 2: say something that I found really interesting, which unless you play,
- 14:53Speaker 2: you have no idea. But he would say that the
- 14:55Speaker 2: run game for offensive lineman and play action sounded different
- 15:00Speaker 2: when you were on the field. which, you know, obviously
- 15:03Speaker 2: none of us can relate to, but it sounded different.
- 15:07Speaker 2: So Matt would.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Sit in with Greg and Jaws for years. I remember
- 15:10Speaker 3: meeting Matt there.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:11Speaker 3: It's pretty interesting.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Yep. Yeah.
- 15:13Speaker 3: After you left the line.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Yep.
- 15:14Speaker 1: All right. So again, it's not necessarily that the Eagles
- 15:17Speaker 1: did anything poorly on defense here. This is just a well-executed,
- 15:20Speaker 1: well-executed play.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Right. You know, that's the other thing people have to understand,
- 15:23Speaker 2: you know, when plays happen that are well-executed on either side,
- 15:26Speaker 2: it doesn't mean the other side stinks. Right. You know,
- 15:29Speaker 2: this happens in games.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Yeah, as you can see from the mesh point here,
- 15:33Speaker 1: you can see the linebackers.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Look at what you're getting here. This looks like a
- 15:38Speaker 2: gap scheme run. The guards are pulling. You're doubling on
- 15:41Speaker 2: what appears to be play side. Right now, look at 72.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Look at them, you know, 72. And the right guard, Hunt,
- 15:48Speaker 2: I believe is 50. Look at them double. Look at
- 15:50Speaker 2: the guard pull. Damien Lewis, I believe that is. Everything
- 15:54Speaker 2: about this says run. Right. You got the back block
- 15:58Speaker 2: by the center. I mean, it looks run. Yeah.
- 16:01Speaker 1: By the way, still not an easy throw. Beautiful throw
- 16:03Speaker 1: for Bryce. He's really good at that.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Trotter, I mean, covered a little bit of the middle.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:07Speaker 1: All right. The first tremble touchdown. You want to break down?
- 16:11Speaker 2: I think if you go back a little earlier, can
- 16:13Speaker 2: you just go back a little earlier?
- 16:15Speaker 1: Oh, I may not be able to.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Hold on. Okay. Don't then. Well, what happens is as
- 16:18Speaker 2: soon as you get the motion by Tremaine coming in,
- 16:21Speaker 2: the Zin motion, ZN, look at Makuba. He's doing something
- 16:26Speaker 2: with Mitchell.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Okay.
- 16:28Speaker 2: He's communicating with Mitchell. So now what happens is, is
- 16:34Speaker 2: Tremaine runs right at Makuba and Mitchell goes with him thinking,
- 16:39Speaker 2: I'm sure that, hey, my guys, he's outside. He's my guy.
- 16:43Speaker 2: And then Tremble, the uniqueness and the reason this works
- 16:47Speaker 2: so well is Tremble initially shows as if he's pass
- 16:50Speaker 2: protecting and then releases late. And I think, and I
- 16:54Speaker 2: think McCuba felt that Mitchell would take him and Mitchell
- 16:57Speaker 2: felt that McCuba would take, that's my sense of looking
- 17:00Speaker 2: at this play.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Like a switch release maybe. Yeah. They switch off on
- 17:04Speaker 1: them and he's just, yeah.
- 17:07Speaker 2: That they're, that they're basically, yeah, that they're switching. In
- 17:09Speaker 2: other words, that Mitchell would play the outside release and
- 17:13Speaker 2: McCuba would play the inside release. Tremaine became the inside
- 17:16Speaker 2: releaser and Tremble became the outside releaser, but Mitchell went with,
- 17:22Speaker 2: Mitchell didn't play the releases. He played the man.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I wonder this, and we'll, we can't answer the question.
- 17:31Speaker 1: You wonder if that is a staple of something Carolina
- 17:35Speaker 1: has been doing, or did they see something with the
- 17:37Speaker 1: way the Eagles, because the Eagles have had some miscommunications
- 17:41Speaker 1: lately in the, in the secondary.
- 17:42Speaker 2: And I don't know if Vic, you know, sometimes Vic's
- 17:44Speaker 2: honest about stuff like that. I don't know if he's
- 17:46Speaker 2: going to say what happened in a press conference, but
- 17:48Speaker 2: clearly there was a, they didn't play it. They didn't work.
- 17:52Speaker 2: together the right way. Correct. This is the Coker 32-yarder.
- 17:56Speaker 2: It is.
- 17:57Speaker 1: What happened here?
- 17:58Speaker 2: This is beautiful. The Eagles are playing man, okay? Now,
- 18:02Speaker 2: Coker's offset. Don't go yet. Coker's offset in the backfield
- 18:05Speaker 2: to the boundary, and they've got Hubbard all the way
- 18:08Speaker 2: out in a plus split because he's totally irrelevant to
- 18:10Speaker 2: the play. He's totally in a plus split outside, and
- 18:14Speaker 2: the Eagles stayed with having a corner out on him.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I think that's Wolin, but they're playing man. So what
- 18:22Speaker 2: you get here is you're getting Vaughn matched on Coker.
- 18:26Speaker 2: You can't blame Vaughn here. I mean, this is just,
- 18:29Speaker 2: you know, it's, you know, look, you'll see it develop. Yep.
- 18:34Speaker 1: And by the way, I think that's Mitchell that's up
- 18:35Speaker 1: at the top of the screen on Hubbard.
- 18:38Speaker 2: That's right. It's Mitchell. I'm sorry. That's okay.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I was just letting people know.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Right. You're right. Mitchell's the right corner. My bad. So anyway,
- 18:44Speaker 2: it's yeah. So look what you get. They're matching up.
- 18:47Speaker 2: They're playing cover one and it's Coker versus Vaughn. I mean,
- 18:50Speaker 2: Vaughn's a great player, but that's not going to happen.
- 18:53Speaker 1: No, not at all.
- 18:55Speaker 2: And then you get the run after catch. Yeah.
- 18:57Speaker 1: That's just a good blitz beater.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Yeah. And that was a huge play at the time
- 19:02Speaker 2: because it was late fourth quarter. Theoretically, it still felt
- 19:05Speaker 2: like a game. And look where they are in the field.
- 19:08Speaker 2: If they have to punt, you know, the Eagles would
- 19:10Speaker 2: get great field position more than likely. So it's just, yeah.
- 19:13Speaker 2: I mean, what are you going to do here? I mean,
- 19:15Speaker 2: it's hard.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Yep.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Absolutely. They put a move.
- 19:18Speaker 2: They ran and It's the only time he lined up there, too,
- 19:20Speaker 2: in the game.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Like you mentioned, Adam, in the lead-up, Brad Idzig, right?
- 19:27Speaker 2: I thought he did some really good things in this game.
- 19:30Speaker 1: He's been very, very good.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Because I know, Jeff, the fans are going to say,
- 19:34Speaker 3: How could that happen? How could you have a linebacker
- 19:36Speaker 3: on a receiver? That's what they're trying to do. You've
- 19:39Speaker 3: got to understand. I know.
- 19:40Speaker 2: That's what they're trying to do.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yes.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Like when the Eagles do it, you can't just say
- 19:45Speaker 1: that's a great play by the Eagles, but the defensive
- 19:48Speaker 1: coordinators need it. Right, right.
- 19:50Speaker 2: What you're trying to do. You know, when you do
- 19:52Speaker 2: certain things, you're trying. Sometimes the defense doesn't, you know,
- 19:56Speaker 2: help you. And sometimes they play it properly. But you're
- 19:59Speaker 2: trying to cause just that momentary confusion. And when you do, it's,
- 20:04Speaker 2: you know, it works. So here, this is the second
- 20:07Speaker 2: tremble touchdown, right? Yep. So, again, here's the same kind
- 20:10Speaker 2: of deal. Wolin's the left corner. So, right now, he's
- 20:13Speaker 2: playing the outside tight end, okay? And I think that's–
- 20:18Speaker 2: it's not Makuba. That's Moore, I believe. Is it Moore
- 20:21Speaker 2: or Dejean? No, it's Dejean.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Dejean, yeah.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Because they're in base. Yep. Isn't it Dejean? So, now
- 20:26Speaker 2: Dejean's got the inside tight end. So, here's what happens. So,
- 20:29Speaker 2: the inside tight end goes down the line as part
- 20:32Speaker 2: of what looks like an outside zone run. So, now–
- 20:37Speaker 2: the tight end on the outside, who's Tremble, Dijon thinks,
- 20:41Speaker 2: because his initial stem is outside of Dijon, Dijon, I guarantee,
- 20:46Speaker 2: thinks that, okay, Wolin's got him. He's outside. Right. And
- 20:50Speaker 2: then Wolin doesn't have him. So then Dijon kind of goes, oh,
- 20:53Speaker 2: you know what? Exactly. Yep. Yeah, so again, there was
- 20:59Speaker 2: just total miscommunication there in how they were playing that.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Jeff, it's like, it's probably like, this is exactly what
- 21:06Speaker 3: we want to get there.
- 21:08Speaker 2: They're hoping to create problems in adjustment and communication. That's
- 21:12Speaker 2: what they're hoping.
- 21:13Speaker 1: For sure. Who would, who would know that 88 would
- 21:15Speaker 1: be the outside guy. Look at the jeans.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Unbelievable. We actually saw that part.
- 21:22Speaker 2: That's why, that's why guys. And then I hate the term.
- 21:26Speaker 2: And I, every time I hear it, I say, no,
- 21:28Speaker 2: that's not the case. I hate when people say, well,
- 21:30Speaker 2: it's just window dressing. Nothing is window dressing. There's always
- 21:34Speaker 2: a reason for why guys go in motion for why,
- 21:37Speaker 2: you know, I mean, there's a reason for it.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:39Speaker 2: That's right. Yep. Oh man.
- 21:43Speaker 1: And the fact that 88 was never, never even really
- 21:45Speaker 1: part of the play just helped be the decoys.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:48Speaker 1: It's, it's, Okay, you know those pieces in your closet
- 21:52Speaker 1: that you find yourself wearing on repeat. There's the sweater

- 24:27Speaker 1: Camden Apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices, and an experience
- 24:32Speaker 1: made for Philly fans 21 and up. All right, so
- 24:35Speaker 1: that's a look. I think the takeaway is, and listen,
- 24:38Speaker 1: the defense has been very good, but they have had
- 24:40Speaker 1: some pretty bad, miscommunication type. I mean, against the bears,
- 24:45Speaker 1: I believe they have one against a Jaguar. So it's
- 24:48Speaker 1: been a little rough for them.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Jeff, you know, it's, you know, it's bad when the
- 24:50Speaker 3: ageless David Moore comes out of mothballs and has a
- 24:53Speaker 3: 27 yarder that like, you can't get rid of this guy.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 24:55Speaker 3: It was drafted 10 years ago at seventh round by
- 24:58Speaker 3: the Seahawks. And who was there? Scott Fitter and Dan Morgan.
- 25:02Speaker 3: So they brought him to, to Carolina.
- 25:03Speaker 2: So maybe what was it? It's like central Arkansas state
- 25:07Speaker 2: or something.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Something like that.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Yes. Yes.
- 25:09Speaker 3: And I remember they, they, Talking to one of their
- 25:11Speaker 3: front office guys, they were like, listen, dude, we got
- 25:13Speaker 3: somebody here.
- 25:14Speaker 2: I did that. I evaluated him coming out.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Where did Scottie Pippen go?
- 25:19Speaker 1: Central Arkansas.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Central Arkansas, yeah.
- 25:22Speaker 3: I'll look it up, but it might have been Central Oklahoma.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, look, obviously now there's a lot more
- 25:28Speaker 2: concern because Hertz will be out for the season, and
- 25:32Speaker 2: we'll see. But they've got some things. There's two things
- 25:36Speaker 2: that they have not been able to do, which somehow
- 25:39Speaker 2: they have to be able to do. On offense, they
- 25:41Speaker 2: have to be able to have some kind of run game.
- 25:43Speaker 2: It doesn't have to gain 180 yards a game. They
- 25:45Speaker 2: have to have some kind of run game, and they
- 25:47Speaker 2: have to be able to rush the quarterback. They cannot
- 25:49Speaker 2: rush the quarterback. It's really hard to play without being
- 25:53Speaker 2: able to do those two things to some meaningful level
- 25:56Speaker 2: of success.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Can I add they have to be able to protect
- 25:58Speaker 3: the quarterback as well?
- 26:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:01Speaker 3: That's our offensive skill.
- 26:02Speaker 2: But see, the run game, it's funny. The run game
- 26:06Speaker 2: helps so many things for this reason, and then we'll
- 26:09Speaker 2: wrap up. Because number one, you start to control the
- 26:12Speaker 2: pace and tempo of games a little bit more. You
- 26:14Speaker 2: force the defense to have to do some things they
- 26:16Speaker 2: don't want to do or change the way they play
- 26:19Speaker 2: because you can run the ball. Maybe instead of playing
- 26:22Speaker 2: too high, they have to bring a safety down and
- 26:24Speaker 2: you get different looks and maybe looks you feel more
- 26:26Speaker 2: comfortable throwing the ball against. Now also, if you can
- 26:30Speaker 2: control the pace and tempo of games and run more plays,
- 26:33Speaker 2: your defense is on the field faster. Maybe if you
- 26:36Speaker 2: can get ahead and sort of force the other team
- 26:39Speaker 2: to believe that, hey, time's getting away from us a
- 26:41Speaker 2: little bit because the offense has had the ball for
- 26:45Speaker 2: longer periods. Maybe they start to go away from their
- 26:48Speaker 2: sense of balance. You know, I mean, there's domino effects
- 26:52Speaker 2: to all of this. Nothing is in a vacuum in
- 26:54Speaker 2: a game. That's why every game is different. And that's why,
- 26:57Speaker 2: you know, look. Totally unrelated, but of course I watched
- 27:01Speaker 2: Denver play the other night, and it's all Bo Nix stinks,
- 27:03Speaker 2: Bo Nix stinks. We're not going to get into all
- 27:05Speaker 2: the reasons, but there's so much that's going on that's
- 27:08Speaker 2: problematic with their offense, and all people do is blame
- 27:12Speaker 2: the quarterback. And there's so much that goes on. And
- 27:16Speaker 2: so there's so many elements and variables to these games
- 27:19Speaker 2: that don't just stem from one thing.
- 27:22Speaker 3: That's right. East Central Oklahoma State.
- 27:26Speaker 2: There you go.
- 27:28Speaker 3: The very popular football school.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Well, next week, Monday night, Dallas Cowboys, a very potent
- 27:35Speaker 1: offense coming up, although they have struggled at times as well.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Let me just say, very potent offensive playmakers, and they
- 27:43Speaker 1: will pose a threat.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Another team that hasn't run the ball very well at all,
- 27:47Speaker 2: by the way.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Right. Despite having a good offensive line. So we'll see
- 27:52Speaker 1: next week what the results say. That's going to do
- 27:55Speaker 1: it for this episode of of Inside the Tape with
- 27:59Speaker 1: Greg Cosell for Greg and Adam Kaplan. I'm Jeff Mosher.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Thanks for watching Inside the Tape on Inside the Birds.
