- 0:29Speaker 2: today Nebraska heads to Oregon Saturday night, or I guess
- 0:35Speaker 2: maybe Sunday morning, 10 o'clock central in Autzen Stadium. Austin
- 0:43Speaker 2: didn't get a chance to give his Indiana thoughts, so
- 0:45Speaker 2: today we're going to quickly get the thoughts on the
- 0:49Speaker 2: Indiana game from him, and then we're jumping in. It's
- 0:52Speaker 2: Oregon preview day.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't want to dwell on it too much
- 0:56Speaker 3: because it I was so sad after it.
- 0:59Speaker 4: I watched it while I was in Michigan.
- 1:03Speaker 3: And, you know, it's not quite like the Nebraska basketball
- 1:09Speaker 3: against Texas A & M a couple years ago in
- 1:10Speaker 3: the tournament where we started out well. And I keep
- 1:13Speaker 3: saying we'll always have those first six minutes or whatever
- 1:15Speaker 3: I say, the first seven minutes of the game. But
- 1:19Speaker 3: I do remember how I felt with 10 minutes left
- 1:21Speaker 3: in the fourth quarter. And gosh, it felt good. It
- 1:23Speaker 3: felt real good. We did everything we were supposed to.
- 1:28Speaker 3: we knew that there was potential to give up big plays.
- 1:30Speaker 3: We just needed to, to, to be able to handle
- 1:34Speaker 3: one or two of them. We handled one or two,
- 1:37Speaker 3: could not handle three. And that was the difference in
- 1:40Speaker 3: the game. Like, and it's, it's, I don't know. It
- 1:46Speaker 3: may be, I'm, I'm removed from it because after the game,
- 1:51Speaker 3: if you were to ask me, it's like same, same shit,
- 1:54Speaker 3: different toilet sort of thing. Um, But, you know, looking
- 2:00Speaker 3: back on it today, four or five days removed, we
- 2:06Speaker 3: controlled the ball for 40 minutes of the game. We
- 2:09Speaker 3: were one for three on third down. Like, we did
- 2:11Speaker 3: really good things. We just missed a field goal, and
- 2:16Speaker 3: we gave up three massive plays. And our offense kind
- 2:20Speaker 3: of got a little tight at the end. I thought
- 2:24Speaker 3: Calandria looked a little tight in the fourth quarter. Once
- 2:28Speaker 3: they scored their second touchdown, it felt like he kind
- 2:31Speaker 3: of tried to do a little bit too much. He
- 2:34Speaker 3: got a little squeamish in the pocket, and it just
- 2:39Speaker 3: fell apart. But we thought we were going to lose it.
- 2:43Speaker 2: My big takeaway, I thought, like you said, you know,
- 2:49Speaker 2: the same story, whatever, losing close. It felt different because
- 2:55Speaker 2: it felt like, one– I mean, this is a top
- 2:58Speaker 2: 10 team. But two, we– I mean, it felt like
- 3:06Speaker 2: we're playing the right way and doing a lot of
- 3:08Speaker 2: really good things. It just– we came up a tad
- 3:11Speaker 2: bit short. So, yeah, I don't know. It felt a
- 3:13Speaker 2: little bit different. But, yeah, I mean, good takeaway, but
- 3:17Speaker 2: it's nothing to take any moral victory, especially internally in
- 3:20Speaker 2: the locker room. Can't just say, oh, we're pretty good now.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Got to obviously stay hungry and– want to continue to
- 3:29Speaker 2: get better and improve on everything as we head down
- 3:34Speaker 2: in the second half of the season.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Season's not lost.
- 3:38Speaker 3: We lost to a team that we pushed them to
- 3:41Speaker 3: the edge, then they haven't lost. It's the longest win
- 3:46Speaker 3: streak in college football history, second longest. It's right up there.
- 3:51Speaker 3: If you would have asked me, if I would have
- 3:53Speaker 3: been on the pod Monday, I would have been a
- 3:54Speaker 3: lot more.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Sour, but.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Maybe that's just the roller coaster of the Husker fandom.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I just need time to heal and back. Ready to
- 4:05Speaker 3: talk Oregon.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Well, yes, we're 5-1 now, and Oregon is surprisingly at
- 4:12Speaker 2: this point in the year 3-2. They're coming off their
- 4:17Speaker 2: loss to UCLA at home last week, and we have
- 4:21Speaker 2: the opportunity to respond. I think the important update here
- 4:28Speaker 2: to call out right away in the storyline, and I
- 4:31Speaker 2: don't want to spend the whole pod talking about it,
- 4:33Speaker 2: but Dante Moore is out. Therefore, there's a chance that
- 4:40Speaker 2: we see Dylan Raiola at quarterback on Saturday. And even
- 4:46Speaker 2: if he doesn't start, I still think there's a good
- 4:47Speaker 2: chance that we might see him at some point throughout
- 4:49Speaker 2: the game. I think that, you know, there's a reason
- 4:54Speaker 2: why you pay him money to be your backup quarterback.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And yes, last week was bad, but the week before
- 4:59Speaker 2: was good. And we will see that that's going to
- 5:03Speaker 2: be a big, obviously key storyline heading into the game.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Yeah. The reason I said we might not, if you
- 5:10Speaker 3: would have asked us two weeks ago, we would have
- 5:12Speaker 3: said for sure, we're going to see Dylan.
- 5:13Speaker 4: But last week was real bad for Dylan.
- 5:16Speaker 3: He did get benched in a seven and a two
- 5:18Speaker 3: point loss to UCLA.
- 5:20Speaker 4: So I don't remember how many turnovers they had. It
- 5:22Speaker 4: was like seven as a team. And he had, a
- 5:26Speaker 4: fumble and two interceptions, I think.
- 5:29Speaker 3: I don't remember those numbers exactly. So he looked really
- 5:34Speaker 3: bad against UCLA, but UCLA's looked really good. But yeah,
- 5:39Speaker 3: working without Dante Moore has definitely looked approachable, to put
- 5:47Speaker 3: it in terms. I think that it's I don't think
- 5:54Speaker 3: it's going to add that much fuel to our team
- 5:56Speaker 3: playing Dylan.
- 5:59Speaker 4: I wish it was at home.
- 6:00Speaker 3: That would have definitely added a little extra zip to
- 6:02Speaker 3: the fan base, but being on the road at 10 PM,
- 6:05Speaker 3: I don't feel great about the, I mean, I think
- 6:10Speaker 3: it's going to be a good environment. I think I
- 6:12Speaker 3: don't like playing these weird late night games because I
- 6:15Speaker 3: do think it messes with, you know, if you practice
- 6:19Speaker 3: in the afternoon and the morning, you're not practicing at
- 6:21Speaker 3: 10 PM. So your body's just not, train to go
- 6:25Speaker 3: a hundred percent at 10 PM at night or 1
- 6:27Speaker 3: AM in the morning when the game is going to
- 6:29Speaker 3: wrap up. So that honestly, the, the environment and the
- 6:34Speaker 3: situation scares me more than.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's, it's definitely fascinating. And that late start time
- 6:42Speaker 2: I seen there's not been, but I think a couple
- 6:45Speaker 2: of games that we've ever played in the history of
- 6:47Speaker 2: our program that have been later. One was in Hawaii.
- 6:51Speaker 2: So it's, It's unique. I also go back to their
- 6:58Speaker 2: college kids, and college kids are usually not going to
- 7:03Speaker 2: bed at that time like most of us are. So
- 7:05Speaker 2: it is going to be different playing that late, but
- 7:13Speaker 2: what I'm more intrigued and fascinated to watch is what
- 7:17Speaker 2: this environment from a crowd standpoint and just an overall, like,
- 7:23Speaker 2: where Oregon's at. I mean, you want to talk about
- 7:26Speaker 2: where the two programs are at. This is, for us,
- 7:30Speaker 2: and maybe some people would disagree with this, but I
- 7:34Speaker 2: don't feel like we have a whole lot to lose
- 7:36Speaker 2: besides if we get blown out, people are going to
- 7:37Speaker 2: be really upset. Obviously, a close loss isn't going to
- 7:40Speaker 2: be appealing, but going into the year, again, this was
- 7:43Speaker 2: a game. And now Oregon is probably, and we'll get
- 7:49Speaker 2: to January, you know, some of their players, but they're
- 7:52Speaker 2: not all what they thought they were. But Oregon's got
- 7:55Speaker 2: everything to lose as far as a team that was
- 7:58Speaker 2: picked by a lot of people to win the national championship.
- 8:02Speaker 2: And their fans are obviously very restless. Dan Lanning says
- 8:05Speaker 2: they're evaluating everything right now. Right now, they're on the
- 8:10Speaker 2: brink of, like, being able to fold.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Just imploding.
- 8:14Speaker 2: And I think we have the capability of doing that.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Yeah, the pressure's on them.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Because this loss, it eliminates you from playoff contention if
- 8:24Speaker 3: you're Oregon. You know, three losses, you're probably not making playoffs.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Worst start in Dan Lanning's, I think it's worst start
- 8:33Speaker 3: in Dan Lanning's Oregon career.
- 8:34Speaker 4: I could be wrong.
- 8:36Speaker 3: But yeah, when you're a preseason, it's not quite like
- 8:39Speaker 3: Penn State last year because obviously Penn State had some
- 8:45Speaker 3: pre-built subseasons prior that were all letdowns. at a different
- 8:50Speaker 3: level than Oregon. I mean, Oregon's had plenty of letdowns
- 8:53Speaker 3: because they have national championship hopes, but yeah, the wheels, I.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Could see the wheels feeling like they're going to come off.
- 9:00Speaker 3: You can, I'm guessing that right now they're pointing at
- 9:02Speaker 3: Dante Moore getting injured is kind of the, you know,
- 9:08Speaker 3: not the, what's the word?
- 9:09Speaker 4: That's the, that's the.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Cause, you know, you'd be like, oh, well, Dante Moore
- 9:12Speaker 3: hasn't been playing, but I don't think that's really what
- 9:14Speaker 3: their issue has been.
- 9:15Speaker 2: And it's not like he looked great either before he got,
- 9:18Speaker 2: I mean, he was, He was a preseason Heisman favorite.
- 9:21Speaker 4: They still lost to Oklahoma State with him.
- 9:25Speaker 2: It wasn't like before his injury. He was obviously still
- 9:29Speaker 2: a pretty decent quarterback. Just looking at some of the
- 9:35Speaker 2: key stats throughout this preview here, the big thing is
- 9:39Speaker 2: we average pretty much right around the same amount of
- 9:42Speaker 2: yards per game and scoring. Our run game we're averaging 214.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Oregon's averaging 317 passing. So how we have made up
- 9:56Speaker 2: of our offense so far has been a little bit different.
- 9:59Speaker 2: You know, we've been very balanced. Overall, and Oregon has
- 10:02Speaker 2: leaned heavily on the pass. Now, that being said, that
- 10:08Speaker 2: was also with Dante Moore for a lot of those games.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I think Oregon's going to try to establish a run
- 10:15Speaker 2: game against us as well. But the good news is,
- 10:20Speaker 2: We contain Indiana pretty well there too. So it'll be
- 10:22Speaker 2: interesting how they come out. And the other stat that
- 10:28Speaker 2: I want to call out, and it's not so much
- 10:29Speaker 2: about this game, but we have converted 90, or we
- 10:39Speaker 2: allow the opponents to convert 19.7% of third downs. That
- 10:44Speaker 2: is the best in the country right now. Props right
- 10:47Speaker 2: now to where we're at on third down.
- 10:50Speaker 4: And Oregon, 22.1.
- 10:54Speaker 2: They're second nationally. So the two best third down defenses
- 10:59Speaker 2: are matching up here. And, you know, I think that's
- 11:03Speaker 2: a key thing to maybe watch and look at. I
- 11:05Speaker 2: think third down defense is obviously a big, big moment
- 11:10Speaker 2: of every drive. So two things I wanted to call
- 11:14Speaker 2: out there as we're looking at the numbers.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Yeah. And then regarding Oregon and their passing attack, it is,
- 11:23Speaker 3: I do want to, I'm going to have to guess
- 11:25Speaker 3: he's still going to play, but Evan Stewart, the number
- 11:27Speaker 3: one receiver is listed as questionable for the game.
- 11:31Speaker 4: So, I mean, that's, that's in our favor as well, but.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Yeah, you talk and our run games look pretty, pretty good,
- 11:41Speaker 3: but against Indiana last week, we did struggle. So it was,
- 11:44Speaker 3: you know, I was hoping to see a little bit
- 11:47Speaker 3: more production from our running backs this week.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Uh, it worked out fine last week.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Cause you know, and then being a low scoring game
- 11:55Speaker 3: and Calandria actually did really well on the ground.
- 11:59Speaker 4: So if.
- 12:03Speaker 3: I'm, I'm hoping it's another game like Indiana where we can,
- 12:06Speaker 3: we're able to control the time of possession there in
- 12:09Speaker 3: a lot of passing down situations.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Um, and we continue our third score or third down
- 12:16Speaker 4: or down defense.
- 12:22Speaker 3: And maybe this week can be the week that it,
- 12:24Speaker 3: I feel like it's a similar game plan as last week,
- 12:27Speaker 3: except this week we execute on preventing the big passing plays.
- 12:31Speaker 4: That's, that's my perception.
- 12:32Speaker 2: No, I'm with you. And that was a big takeaway
- 12:35Speaker 2: to like from the coaching staff as you're, as you're
- 12:38Speaker 2: talking to your players and evaluating, you know, moving forward
- 12:41Speaker 2: after the Indiana loss, you, you got to, You got
- 12:43Speaker 2: to say, okay, we're like... You got to make it sting.
- 12:47Speaker 2: The loss has got to hurt. It's got to suck,
- 12:50Speaker 2: especially to the players. And you got to show that
- 12:51Speaker 2: you're not happy, whatever. But you're not going to go
- 12:55Speaker 2: out and drastically change a whole bunch from what we did.
- 12:59Speaker 2: At least I hope we don't. We better not. Because
- 13:01Speaker 2: I thought that the game plan going into the game,
- 13:04Speaker 2: the preparation, the ability to out-coach Cignetti for three quarters
- 13:09Speaker 2: of that game, like... All of those things we need
- 13:16Speaker 2: to carry over into Oregon. And I anticipate we do,
- 13:19Speaker 2: but I think the challenging part with that is a
- 13:21Speaker 2: lot of those things become a lot more difficult on
- 13:25Speaker 2: the road in a road environment. Now, again, everybody's probably
- 13:29Speaker 2: going to brush over the Oregon crowd because they're not
- 13:34Speaker 2: playing as well. But, I mean, if they're on their
- 13:38Speaker 2: last straw here for the season... I would not dispute that.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I mean, if things are going to go well, they're
- 13:44Speaker 2: going to be going nuts. Obviously, if we get them
- 13:48Speaker 2: on the ropes, the Boo Birds might come out like
- 13:51Speaker 2: they did last week. But don't expect this to be
- 13:55Speaker 2: an easy environment to go play. It's going to be tough.
- 13:57Speaker 2: It's one of the toughest to play in the conference
- 13:59Speaker 2: because of the way it's set up and how loud
- 14:00Speaker 2: it can get. It's a unique, smaller stadium, but built
- 14:05Speaker 2: in a way that the noise can really reflect well. So,
- 14:10Speaker 2: I think it's important to note that that this road
- 14:14Speaker 2: environment to me is the most, one of the big
- 14:16Speaker 2: concerning things, especially if we don't jump on them from
- 14:21Speaker 2: the get go.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Yeah. And I do think.
- 14:27Speaker 3: I like your call out of, I do think the
- 14:30Speaker 3: fan base could turn, you know, if it's going like
- 14:33Speaker 3: last week, I don't think it's going to go like
- 14:35Speaker 3: last week. I'm, I'm not disappointed that they lost to
- 14:39Speaker 3: UCLA because obviously it gives you a.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Little more hope. But there's also that part where it's like, gosh,
- 14:44Speaker 4: I wish that was our game.
- 14:46Speaker 3: You know, the odds of Oregon having those games two
- 14:48Speaker 3: times in a row aren't great.
- 14:52Speaker 4: But I do, playing Dylan is interesting.
- 14:55Speaker 3: I know we're trying not to make this a Dylan
- 14:58Speaker 3: Rowland conversation, but if he is the starting quarterback, you know,
- 15:01Speaker 3: we kind of know his weaknesses a little bit.
- 15:03Speaker 4: And we've actually done a pretty good job getting in
- 15:05Speaker 4: the backfield.
- 15:08Speaker 3: And making the quarterbacks move a little bit on defense
- 15:11Speaker 3: as far as our pass rush goes and.
- 15:15Speaker 4: Tackling the quarterback.
- 15:17Speaker 3: So I'm kind of hoping that we're a little bit
- 15:20Speaker 3: more aggressive, running.
- 15:21Speaker 4: A lot of blitz packages.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Again, that leaves you a little bit more open to
- 15:26Speaker 3: those deep plays. But like I said, we kind of
- 15:30Speaker 3: know that Dylan, his pocket presence is one of his
- 15:33Speaker 3: weaker aspects of his game that I'm sure he was
- 15:35Speaker 3: hoping to work.
- 15:36Speaker 4: On this season.
- 15:38Speaker 3: And I'm hoping defensively we can actually, it's, it's interesting
- 15:43Speaker 3: being on this.
- 15:43Speaker 4: I'd be like, Oh, I like to exploit the thing
- 15:45Speaker 4: that we worried about last year.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:48Speaker 4: And, and.
- 15:50Speaker 2: As we transition here, when Oregon has the ball, I
- 15:53Speaker 2: think the, the big thing when you're talking about these
- 15:56Speaker 2: quarterbacks is, is each, each are a little bit different
- 16:01Speaker 2: as far as what they bring to the table. But
- 16:03Speaker 2: for the most part, Our scheme and design and what
- 16:06Speaker 2: we do is not going to be too much different,
- 16:09Speaker 2: I think, for these three guys. They run a lot
- 16:13Speaker 2: of spread RPO stuff. It's a lot of RPOs. Indiana
- 16:18Speaker 2: was a little more pro RPO, more tight ends, more wingbacks,
- 16:23Speaker 2: but still a lot of RPOs. This is going to
- 16:25Speaker 2: be more spread here with the RPO game. And then
- 16:31Speaker 2: I think you should expect.
- 16:35Speaker 2: I would think more of a heavier dose of their
- 16:38Speaker 2: running back, Davison. But, I mean, that's what I would do.
- 16:41Speaker 2: I don't know if they're going to necessarily do that
- 16:43Speaker 2: with how their game plan went. The other thing I
- 16:50Speaker 2: think to watch, or what I think we need to
- 16:54Speaker 2: figure out a way to adjust to, is one, stop
- 16:56Speaker 2: the run, but two, not give up big plays, especially
- 17:00Speaker 2: on the road. And you mentioned that earlier. what that
- 17:05Speaker 2: balance is from playing press coverage, not letting them get
- 17:09Speaker 2: easy dink and dunk throws, slants, hitches. Because Indiana didn't
- 17:15Speaker 2: get much of that either because the way we were covering. Obviously,
- 17:19Speaker 2: you take one thing away, it exposes you a little
- 17:21Speaker 2: more to the other thing. So I'm curious, I guess,
- 17:24Speaker 2: what our defensive strategy is after giving up big plays,
- 17:28Speaker 2: which ultimately kind of costed the game. Is that because
- 17:31Speaker 2: of the scheme? Was it single play, like, What's our
- 17:34Speaker 2: adjustment or is there one when we're out there on
- 17:37Speaker 2: the edge? And maybe the quarterback situation does change that
- 17:43Speaker 2: a little bit as well. Like you said, we know
- 17:45Speaker 2: Dylan's capabilities, both good and bad. So that should help
- 17:52Speaker 2: us when he's out there. But yeah, I guess I'm
- 17:55Speaker 2: curious how we adjust from the Indiana game, which was
- 17:59Speaker 2: a very, very good defensive game for us. He's a
- 18:02Speaker 2: team that's very similar in Oregon, maybe a little more spread,
- 18:05Speaker 2: but going to run a lot of the same type
- 18:06Speaker 2: of stuff.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, I mean, I kind of already lived through
- 18:15Speaker 4: those things that we'd agree on. And, you know.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Looking back at it again, Indiana, it feels good now
- 18:29Speaker 3: in seeing how he's performed well against Indiana. I do
- 18:32Speaker 3: think Oregon tries to establish the run a little bit more.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Indiana moved away from the run relatively early, and I
- 18:41Speaker 3: don't think that did them any benefits. I think Oregon,
- 18:45Speaker 3: based off their performance last week, are going to try
- 18:47Speaker 3: to stick to the run a little bit longer. So
- 18:49Speaker 3: if we can contain them longer, I think that's going
- 18:51Speaker 3: to be more beneficial to us. And then I guess
- 18:54Speaker 3: general thoughts on defense, we had a couple of penalties
- 18:58Speaker 3: that gave I mean, penalties were fine against Indiana, but.
- 19:04Speaker 4: We still lost.
- 19:05Speaker 3: So we need to be clean. We need to have
- 19:09Speaker 3: the turnover to be in favor of us. So hopefully
- 19:11Speaker 3: with the passing offense, we can force. Hopefully if they're
- 19:15Speaker 3: passing the ball a lot more, like I said, they had,
- 19:17Speaker 3: I think it was seven turnovers last week.
- 19:19Speaker 4: I don't remember.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I didn't watch the whole game.
- 19:24Speaker 3: So if we can produce half of those turnovers, I
- 19:28Speaker 3: feel freaking great, really.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, that's going to be their big call-out.
- 19:34Speaker 2: I mean, I think going into their week is don't
- 19:36Speaker 2: have– I mean, think of Nebraska had seven turnovers. Holy crap.
- 19:39Speaker 4: That's going to.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Be the one thing that they're really going to be
- 19:44Speaker 2: focused on. And with that being said, that's why I
- 19:47Speaker 2: think you might see more run game. The other thing
- 19:50Speaker 2: that we know Dylan Ariella does well and did in Nebraska,
- 19:53Speaker 2: and when you look at Brock Thomas, too, and some
- 19:57Speaker 2: of Lanning's comments, they throw a lot of quick passes.
- 20:00Speaker 2: They like to get the ball out quick. Well, when
- 20:04Speaker 2: you do that, it's harder to get pressure on them, right?
- 20:08Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Again, another thing to watch on this side of the
- 20:11Speaker 2: ball is do we try to get pressure on him
- 20:16Speaker 2: knowing that the ball's out quick? It might not be
- 20:19Speaker 2: as effective. I mean, I think there's a balance there, right,
- 20:22Speaker 2: of if you're going to bring a rush or try
- 20:25Speaker 2: to do something, there's a time and place for it.
- 20:29Speaker 2: I also think our press coverage man that we do
- 20:33Speaker 2: a lot of times is going to help with that,
- 20:35Speaker 2: but I do think we might adjust some of that
- 20:37Speaker 2: too for the big play aspect Yeah, the whole passing
- 20:41Speaker 2: game is going to be interesting. Again, assuming we can
- 20:44Speaker 2: stop the run. I mean, we've done a good job
- 20:46Speaker 2: of that so far. No reason.
- 20:49Speaker 4: To think that it won't be able to at least
- 20:51Speaker 4: slow the run.
- 20:55Speaker 2: When we have the ball here, here's my one thing
- 21:01Speaker 2: that no one's going to talk about, but I think
- 21:03Speaker 2: is really big, and I want to call it out,
- 21:05Speaker 2: and This is my number one most concerning thing for
- 21:09Speaker 2: this game, and it worries me. Dylan Raiola, I think,
- 21:15Speaker 2: I don't know. I think you can talk all the
- 21:18Speaker 2: crap you want about him as fans or media, whatever.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I think he's a pretty smart guy. I think he
- 21:27Speaker 2: understands football very well. I think he understands how to
- 21:30Speaker 2: make reads pretty well. I don't know his decision-making is perfect,
- 21:34Speaker 2: but I think he understands the game. Here's my big concern.
- 21:39Speaker 2: He spent a year and a half with Dana Holgerson
- 21:46Speaker 2: and learning Dana's, now I get our systems a little
- 21:49Speaker 2: bit different now, but learning Dana's identity, what he likes
- 21:55Speaker 2: to do, what he doesn't like to do, his tendencies,
- 21:58Speaker 2: what he likes to call, when he likes to call it.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Like when you're a quarterback, you are obviously building a
- 22:03Speaker 2: strong relationship with your offensive coordinator and you're you're I
- 22:08Speaker 2: mean this is not just obviously in season it's throughout
- 22:10Speaker 2: the entire year in that offseason when we were all
- 22:13Speaker 2: excited for meshing Raiola and Holgerson like he knows Dana
- 22:19Speaker 2: very very well and like just think if you're a
- 22:23Speaker 2: coach and you have a player of any sport and
- 22:25Speaker 2: your player all of a sudden next year goes to
- 22:29Speaker 2: an opposing team like They know everything. And yes, I
- 22:33Speaker 2: get it. You're changing stuff. Things are different. But your
- 22:36Speaker 2: base core way you function, your non-negotiable type of things,
- 22:43Speaker 2: those things aren't changing. You're not flipping. You're not changing.
- 22:47Speaker 2: It's all pretty consistent. And yeah, you're going to add
- 22:51Speaker 2: and adjust. But that part is really concerning to me.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Dylan's going to be able to share all that information.
- 22:59Speaker 2: And yeah, they're not going to know how to They're
- 23:02Speaker 2: not stealing play calls by any means, but they're going
- 23:05Speaker 2: to understand how Dana operates. And if I were Oregon,
- 23:08Speaker 2: I'd be getting all that information, everything I can from Dylan,
- 23:12Speaker 2: and assuming you trust Dylan and what he's saying. Like,
- 23:16Speaker 2: that part to me is not to be overlooked this week.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:23Speaker 3: You know, I should say luckily, but, you know, Dana Holgerson,
- 23:26Speaker 3: he has a lot of film out there, and I
- 23:29Speaker 3: think people have an idea, but no. I'm hoping that
- 23:33Speaker 3: they're more worried about getting Dylan prepped for the week
- 23:36Speaker 3: against our defense more so than offloading his information. If
- 23:40Speaker 3: Dante Moore was healthy, I'd feel way worse because it's like,
- 23:43Speaker 3: you know that that's all Dylan's doing all week is
- 23:46Speaker 3: just telling them, oh, hey, this is what they're doing here.
- 23:50Speaker 4: That's what they want to do here. But I agree.
- 23:52Speaker 3: I don't think that's going to be the difference in
- 23:57Speaker 3: the game. But if our offense struggles, it's definitely going
- 24:02Speaker 3: to creep into my mind and be like, Oh man,
- 24:04Speaker 3: do they know what we're doing? And that's, isn't that,
- 24:07Speaker 3: that's what happened against Oklahoma state, right?
- 24:09Speaker 4: Against Oregon.
- 24:10Speaker 3: They're like, Oh, Dante Moore has a tell whatever he
- 24:12Speaker 3: wants to run or pass the ball.
- 24:15Speaker 4: It came out and that's what it was in the
- 24:17Speaker 4: college football playoffs.
- 24:18Speaker 3: And I'm sure that that, that mentally messed with them
- 24:21Speaker 3: a little bit this year of like, what are we doing?
- 24:23Speaker 4: Like if people know what we're doing. All right.
- 24:29Speaker 2: My biggest thing early on here that I'm watching for is,
- 24:32Speaker 2: I mean, twofold, but for the same reason. One, can
- 24:38Speaker 2: we establish a run game with our running backs like
- 24:41Speaker 2: we did the first few games of the season? Didn't
- 24:43Speaker 2: do a great job with that last week against Indiana.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Had some decent runs, but nothing like we've been doing.
- 24:50Speaker 2: But what goes into that is how much is Oregon
- 24:53Speaker 2: committing defenders to the box for that reason? You know,
- 24:58Speaker 2: what does that look like? So, like, both those combinations,
- 25:01Speaker 2: I think, is a big part of our identity now,
- 25:05Speaker 2: which I love. Thank goodness we figured that part out.
- 25:09Speaker 2: And early on, we'll see what we can do with
- 25:16Speaker 2: the running back run game. I do like, against Indiana,
- 25:19Speaker 2: how we identified, and, I mean, again, this is part
- 25:23Speaker 2: of prep prepping, that the edge is, with some of
- 25:25Speaker 2: the jet sweeps and quick screen passes and all of
- 25:28Speaker 2: that was vulnerable. So we'll see what that vulnerability is
- 25:33Speaker 2: that the coaches identify against Oregon. But that's my first
- 25:37Speaker 2: test looking close at the first couple of drives is
- 25:42Speaker 2: what is that? What is that initial first and 10
- 25:45Speaker 2: type of plays? But what does that look like when
- 25:47Speaker 2: we're trying to run the ball? Where is it going?
- 25:50Speaker 2: And how is Oregon responding to that?
- 25:55Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I agree.
- 25:57Speaker 3: I think us getting the run game going is important.
- 26:00Speaker 3: And also, like I said, I don't want to say
- 26:02Speaker 3: the same thing as Indiana, but we held the ball
- 26:05Speaker 3: for 40 minutes of the game. And I think that
- 26:06Speaker 3: was huge. We want to keep it low scoring because
- 26:10Speaker 3: if we get into a shootout with Oregon, that means
- 26:13Speaker 3: we're probably going to lose. And yeah, that's another thing
- 26:18Speaker 3: I guess we didn't talk about on time. But it
- 26:20Speaker 3: did feel like we figured out some things that worked.
- 26:23Speaker 3: that they couldn't figure out until the end of the game.
- 26:25Speaker 4: They kind of started to figure it out. So we
- 26:27Speaker 4: can figure out what, what it is against Oregon.
- 26:29Speaker 3: I haven't watched enough Oregon games to kind of have
- 26:31Speaker 3: an idea of what's working against them. Obviously it's their
- 26:36Speaker 3: defense doesn't seem to have been the issue this year.
- 26:41Speaker 3: So if their offense has just kind of been a
- 26:43Speaker 3: little bit like last week, it wasn't their defense.
- 26:46Speaker 4: It was their offense that lost them the game. So I,
- 26:50Speaker 4: you know, it's a concern.
- 26:51Speaker 3: I want their offense to feel pressure and have in
- 26:59Speaker 3: the back of their mind, we don't want to take
- 27:01Speaker 3: shots because that's what lost us the game last week
- 27:03Speaker 3: to make them play a little bit scared.
- 27:05Speaker 6: And I think the other big piece we haven't talked
- 27:09Speaker 6: about is Anthony Calandria and his capability to do what
- 27:15Speaker 6: he's been doing against Oregon.
- 27:18Speaker 2: I think Nico– Ian Malava for UCLA. I was hoping
- 27:24Speaker 2: I wouldn't have to say his name this year, but
- 27:28Speaker 2: he is not as much of a runner, and I
- 27:31Speaker 2: think this is going to be the most running threat
- 27:34Speaker 2: from a quarterback that Oregon's going to see so far
- 27:36Speaker 2: in their season two. So, again, how they account for
- 27:39Speaker 2: that and what Calandra is able to accomplish both in
- 27:43Speaker 2: the air and with his feet is going to be,
- 27:46Speaker 2: I think, a key factor, too, to how this offense
- 27:49Speaker 2: performs offensively. And I would expect him just to continue
- 27:52Speaker 2: to make plays. The question for me goes back again
- 27:56Speaker 2: to being on the road where it's going to be
- 27:58Speaker 2: harder to hear, harder to do stuff, harder to operate,
- 28:00Speaker 2: harder to dictate, lead, all of that stuff. The confidence
- 28:05Speaker 2: that you can have, though, in a quarterback that's played
- 28:07Speaker 2: a lot of games in a lot of different places. Yes,
- 28:14Speaker 2: he was at UNLV, but then Virginia before where he
- 28:16Speaker 2: played in some ACC environments as well. he's done that.
- 28:23Speaker 2: It's not going to be a big shock to him
- 28:24Speaker 2: like it can be to some younger quarterbacks or quarterbacks
- 28:29Speaker 2: that are just playing in a lower conference schedule. I
- 28:35Speaker 2: can give you hope there, but I think it's going
- 28:38Speaker 2: to be harder to operate on offense on this road environment,
- 28:41Speaker 2: especially early.
- 28:42Speaker 3: And that's when the running game is most important.
- 28:46Speaker 4: And having a quarterback who runs... Opens up your running game.
- 28:49Speaker 4: It helps a lot. So I totally agree.
- 28:55Speaker 2: And when it comes to our receivers and including Luke
- 28:58Speaker 2: Lindenmeyer in that, here's what I like is that I
- 29:01Speaker 2: kind of said it with, with Gilmer having two back-to-back
- 29:04Speaker 2: big weeks, those other guys are just as good, right?
- 29:07Speaker 2: Gilmer's been a calendar's go-to target, but we got the
- 29:10Speaker 2: other two involved. We have some guys that are pretty
- 29:14Speaker 2: damn talented on the edge and doing a lot of things. So,
- 29:18Speaker 2: I'll be curious, again, what that attack looks like in
- 29:23Speaker 2: the air. And Luke Lindemeyer's done his fair share as
- 29:26Speaker 2: well of catching passes and obviously helping in the run
- 29:31Speaker 2: game as well. And we haven't talked about it, which
- 29:36Speaker 2: is probably good, but Indiana... we i thought won the
- 29:42Speaker 2: line of scrimmage or at least competed at the line
- 29:44Speaker 2: of scrimmage for a lot of that game and against
- 29:47Speaker 2: better teams and and i will say this you know
- 29:50Speaker 2: what raiola made the comment beginning of the year about
- 29:52Speaker 2: playing with surrounding himself with talent or whatever talent Indiana
- 29:57Speaker 2: still has more talent or Indiana. Oregon has still has
- 29:59Speaker 2: more talent than we do. They do like player for player.
- 30:03Speaker 2: I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, maybe the gap isn't
- 30:06Speaker 2: as wide as we thought it was, but I still
- 30:12Speaker 2: think they're more talented when anytime you face a team
- 30:15Speaker 2: that you think has more talent than you, the first
- 30:17Speaker 2: place you got to look is the line of scrimmage.
- 30:20Speaker 2: And if you're getting blown off the ball, dominated on
- 30:22Speaker 2: the defensive side and, and offensive side, it, it makes
- 30:27Speaker 2: everything 10 times more difficult. So, I mean, in addition
- 30:32Speaker 2: to the run game, let's see what the line of
- 30:34Speaker 2: scrimmage looks like. Again, Indiana, we did a very damn
- 30:37Speaker 2: good job on that. And yeah, we supplemented help with
- 30:41Speaker 2: some of the play calling and maybe avoiding that, but
- 30:45Speaker 2: also defensively bringing some guys down. Just keep an eye
- 30:48Speaker 2: on that line of scrimmage. Can we continue to do
- 30:50Speaker 2: what we've been doing? You don't have to be A grade,
- 30:53Speaker 2: but can we operate defensively well enough that it doesn't
- 30:58Speaker 2: disrupt everything we're doing.
- 31:03Speaker 4: Yeah. We, we just need, we just need to do
- 31:08Speaker 4: what we've been doing. We've been, like I said, we're
- 31:10Speaker 4: five and one.
- 31:10Speaker 3: We had a really good game against Indiana. I, I
- 31:13Speaker 3: guarantee you that that's bulletin material this week is going
- 31:17Speaker 3: somewhere with better talent. I bet when Dylan said that
- 31:20Speaker 3: he did not anticipate starting against Nebraska, um, So it's
- 31:24Speaker 3: always nice to have a little bit of bulletin material,
- 31:27Speaker 3: but I do think, yeah, offensive line, we've looked really
- 31:30Speaker 3: good this year.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Defensive line, we've looked way better than I thought we
- 31:33Speaker 4: were going to look. I thought we were going to,
- 31:35Speaker 4: I was worried about.
- 31:35Speaker 3: Our size on the defensive line, but we've actually done
- 31:38Speaker 3: pretty well against the points we've played. Indiana was the first,
- 31:42Speaker 3: you know, real test where it's like, oh, okay. Now
- 31:44Speaker 3: Indiana hasn't looked as unstoppable as last year, but they're
- 31:48Speaker 3: also a team that definitely has more talent than us.
- 31:50Speaker 3: And we, we were right there. So, I'm expecting a
- 31:55Speaker 3: similar situation. I just looked, I don't know if this
- 31:58Speaker 3: is true, but the opening spread for this game was
- 32:01Speaker 3: 21 and a half.
- 32:02Speaker 4: That's true.
- 32:03Speaker 2: That was that search for some games. They set lines
- 32:06Speaker 2: like preseason.
- 32:08Speaker 4: Okay. That's what I was guessing, but I was like, I,
- 32:11Speaker 4: I can't see when this line was set. Okay.
- 32:15Speaker 3: So seven and a half, seven points. I mean, that's,
- 32:17Speaker 3: that seems about right for a game against Oregon.
- 32:21Speaker 2: I mean, let's find a damn way to win the game.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Like that goes back into last week and the storyline
- 32:28Speaker 2: of when will we finally win, beat a top 25 team.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Which 31 against top 25 teams.
- 32:35Speaker 2: I don't know if it counts this week. I heard
- 32:37Speaker 2: it probably doesn't cause it's AP related, but it's a
- 32:41Speaker 2: game that on paper we shouldn't win.
- 32:44Speaker 5: Right.
- 32:45Speaker 2: But I think we have every tool that we need
- 32:49Speaker 2: to go win this game on the road. And if
- 32:53Speaker 2: the program wants to continue to move forward and take
- 32:55Speaker 2: a big step forward, this would be a huge one
- 32:58Speaker 2: to become bowl eligible at Oregon. I mean, that'd be incredible.
- 33:03Speaker 2: If you told me that beginning of the year, that'd
- 33:04Speaker 2: be incredible. And it's right there. It's not impossible. It
- 33:09Speaker 2: is not impossible to do. And I hope that the
- 33:12Speaker 2: players and coaches truly believe, like they did against Indiana,
- 33:15Speaker 2: that we can go win this game if we do things, this, this,
- 33:18Speaker 2: and this. So, I mean, my winning script, Keep the
- 33:23Speaker 2: game structurally sound, like we said. Control time possession like
- 33:27Speaker 2: we did. See if we can get some running back production.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Force Oregon, I think, has sustained drives. And if we
- 33:35Speaker 2: can make the first scoring opportunity count early on, that'll
- 33:39Speaker 2: help with the crowd. So I think a big piece
- 33:42Speaker 2: in these games is just keeping the game within striking
- 33:47Speaker 2: distance when it comes to the fourth quarter. And then.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Seize the moment and take, take the opportunity and win
- 33:53Speaker 2: the game. I, I, if you put yourself at a
- 33:57Speaker 2: hard spot in the fourth quarter or try to come
- 33:59Speaker 2: from behind, it's not, it's not pretty, but get yourself
- 34:01Speaker 2: right there at the end in the last two drives
- 34:05Speaker 2: each and, and, and find a way to win the game.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Like we can do.
- 34:08Speaker 4: Position and, This year, we've done the things that we've
- 34:12Speaker 4: been harping on for years.
- 34:14Speaker 3: We run the ball better than our opponents. We control
- 34:17Speaker 3: the ball more than our opponents. We're limiting turnovers outside
- 34:20Speaker 3: of penalties. We aren't really doing anything dumb. And so
- 34:24Speaker 3: last week, we almost had it all come to fruition.
- 34:26Speaker 3: We just had a couple of mistakes that cost us
- 34:30Speaker 3: a close game against the top 10 team.
- 34:32Speaker 4: And it wouldn't suck. I should say that. But, you know,
- 34:36Speaker 4: it's like, oh, finally, if we beat Oregon, it's like, oh,
- 34:38Speaker 4: we beat a ranked team. It's like, well, you know,
- 34:40Speaker 4: it's just kind of funny that it's like, finally, I think.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Everything's coming together to where it's like, this might actually happen.
- 34:46Speaker 3: It's just kind of funny that when it happens, it's. Yeah.
- 34:50Speaker 2: And the status is a nice to have thing. It's
- 34:53Speaker 2: obviously the matter of fact of beating a team that
- 34:58Speaker 2: on paper, you shouldn't on the road. And again, it's
- 35:00Speaker 2: right there for the taking. Go get it. Don't take
- 35:04Speaker 2: Indiana as a moral victory and say we're pretty good,
- 35:07Speaker 2: and if we lose this game, who cares, right? We're
- 35:09Speaker 2: right there. Like, go take this game and steal one
- 35:11Speaker 2: on the road in Eugene.
- 35:13Speaker 4: Yep, I agree.
- 35:16Speaker 2: All right, well, get your coffee ready for the 10 p.m.
- 35:21Speaker 4: It's so freaking late. Showdown.
- 35:23Speaker 2: You want to do a post-game pod at 2 a.m.
- 35:26Speaker 4: No, no, no, I don't.
- 35:30Speaker 3: If the first half doesn't go– if the first half
- 35:33Speaker 3: is looking one way, there's a good chance I might
- 35:34Speaker 3: record the second half and watch it in the morning.
- 35:38Speaker 2: I'm excited just to be able to watch college football
- 35:40Speaker 2: all day and then.
- 35:42Speaker 4: Go to a bar, close it down.
- 35:44Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know what the plan is for
- 35:46Speaker 2: the game yet, but it'll feel like the entire day
- 35:49Speaker 2: of football is over, and then we've got a game
- 35:51Speaker 2: of starting. It'll be great.
- 35:53Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, great's a word.
- 35:56Speaker 2: All right. All right. Go Big Red.
