Parents, your idling car at school drop-offs could be breaking the law—and harming kids’ health. Leaving engines running unnecessarily is illegal under Section 42 of the Road Traffic Act, especially around schools where children breathe in more pollution. Fines start at £20 (up to £80 in London) and many parents don’t even know it’s against the rules. A study found over a quarter of school drivers idle their cars, thinking they’ll only be stopped briefly or to keep heat/A/C on. But one minute of idling equals 150 balloons’ worth of emissions.
