- 0:00Speaker 1: Right now though. Donna is our Australia correspondent, Donna, good
- 0:03Speaker 1: to have you on the program. This weapons expo in
- 0:06Speaker 1: Melbourne bracing for big protest. What's going on?
- 0:09Speaker 2: Yes, In fact, Victoria police have erected a ring of steel,
- 0:13Speaker 2: as they describe it, around this weapons expo. It's going
- 0:16Speaker 2: to have about eight hundred companies there and there's going
- 0:19Speaker 2: to be military tanks and semi automatic guns on display,
- 0:22Speaker 2: and a lot of people are expected to attend the
- 0:25Speaker 2: expo itself, but it's understood up to about twenty five
- 0:29Speaker 2: thousand people may take to the streets, These anti war
- 0:33Speaker 2: activists they're calling themselves, and they possibly plan to cause chaos.
- 0:37Speaker 2: So Victoria police are trying to be prepared for that.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Interstate police have been called in and it suggested it
- 0:43Speaker 2: maybe a repeat of similar scenes. Way back in two
- 0:45Speaker 2: thousand there was absolute mayhem and violence on the streets
- 0:49Speaker 2: when protesters targeted the World Economic Forum and about one
- 0:53Speaker 2: hundred people were arrested at that time. So this Land
- 0:56Speaker 2: Forces Expo does have the focus of police and activists.
- 1:00Speaker 2: In fact, already at the weekend some Melbourne hotels have
- 1:04Speaker 2: been painted red and vandalized and so we do believe
- 1:07Speaker 2: that hundreds of police are being brought in as I mentioned,
- 1:10Speaker 2: and there's already this fencing that's covered in tarps. So
- 1:13Speaker 2: it's not really clear now to the general public what's
- 1:16Speaker 2: happening behind those taps, but you might want to know
- 1:20Speaker 2: that police now do have these extra increased powers to
- 1:24Speaker 2: search any person and vehicle under heightened anti terrant legislation
- 1:29Speaker 2: in Victoria. The Lord Mary in the meantime, he's just saying,
- 1:32Speaker 2: please everybody stay calm.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Yeah, Nia, it sounds like there might be some need
- 1:37Speaker 1: for calm there. Tell us this thirty two year old
- 1:39Speaker 1: who allegedly poured a flask of hot coffee on a
- 1:42Speaker 1: nine month old baby in Brisbane.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yes, it's been described as deliberate and unprovoked attack. This
- 1:49Speaker 2: baby suffered significant burdens to his face, arms and legs. Now,
- 1:52Speaker 2: thankfully he's on the men. Now. This happened on the
- 1:55Speaker 2: twenty seventh of August, but we have had an update
- 1:58Speaker 2: from Brisbane Police. We now know that the man who
- 2:02Speaker 2: allegedly did this pouring this scolding coffee on a nine
- 2:05Speaker 2: month old baby has escaped overseas and he escaped they
- 2:09Speaker 2: believe less than a day before he was identified by
- 2:12Speaker 2: detectives and I found this most interesting. Police have confirmed
- 2:16Speaker 2: that it became apparent that this person was aware of
- 2:19Speaker 2: police methodologies, was conducting countess of valence activities and that
- 2:24Speaker 2: made the investigation quite complex. Meantime, the family is saying
- 2:28Speaker 2: they do hope that one day justice will be served.
- 2:31Speaker 1: It's bizarre.
- 2:33Speaker 2: They Okay, the baby is on the mend. We heard
- 2:36Speaker 2: from the family as well. He's up and about and
- 2:39Speaker 2: walking again, and his mother is just really that he's
- 2:42Speaker 2: such a strong little boy.
- 2:43Speaker 1: As she put it, absolutely Donna. Thank you for that.
